A

lthough September heralds the end of summer and the arrival of that melancholy back-to-school feeling, I’ve decided to keep spirits up by embracing the new season in fashion. Th is time of year is when British fashion comes into its own; we Brits really know how to work a look in more temperate conditions. The current love affair with pink puts an autumnal spin on a spring colour, and Felicities Showroom in Shoreditch is on-hand to outline this and other key trends for the months ahead. Leading designers may currently be preparing to showcase their SS14 looks at London Fashion Week, but for the incoming AW13 collections expect a mish-mash of textures, tartan and plaid fabrics, plus a defi nite nod to the punk rebellion. A ‘best of British’ chord is about to be struck, and as the new academic year gets underway it’s a fi ne time for all of us to study up and strut our stuff. On that note, I was chuffed to interview Alison Lloyd, founder of East London-based accessories brand Ally Capellino, at her Calvert Street studio. For some years an established name in the fashion industry, Lloyd’s brand is equally respected among the wider design community. Th is month, Ally Capellino takes part in the 2013 London Design Festival; she revealed to me the highs and lows of a career in style and why craft ing amazing bags makes her happy. Being the proud owner of one, I can vouch for their durability as much as their coolly effortless chic. In food news, Canary Wharf welcomes the recent opening of Tom’s Kitchen, another project by fiery red-headed chef Tom Aikens. Th is East London outpost (his popular Chelsea canteen opened in 2006 with a Somerset House iteration following three years later) is surely a sign of Canary Wharf ’s ongoing evolution, from sterile City Boy workspace to thriving lifestyle Mecca. Of course, the East End has been on the up for years, but it’s good to see the Docklands getting its share of the excitement – and waving its old identity, as an impersonal labyrinth of elevators, escalators and chain stores, goodbye. Bravo, Tom, and bravo Edwina Langley, who grills the dishy chef on his reasons for crossing the river to join the Westferry circus. I do hope you enjoy the issue.

#THINKPINK Traditionally associated with spring and summer, pink is sticking around in a big way for autumn. Reddish skies, dusky sunsets, berry hues and shades of Pink Lady apples and penny-chew gum paraded their way down the catwalks; pink coats were a hit too, whether in muted, pastel shades or of the fluffier Pink Panther variety. As such, I’m fully behind the unlikely style icon that is Thunderbirds’ Lady Penelope, and have paired this Simone Rocha suit (sassed up by a mini-skirt) with these crystal-embellished Miu Miu dolly shoes. If this outfit is a little saccharine for your taste, you could stick with darker colours while investing in a pink coat for outdoor wow factor.

he last decade has seen East London become a magnet for international designers. But while fashion labels large and small have come and gone, one Shoreditch-based brand has stood the test of time, steadily amassing a faithful following among the area’s design-savvy residents while building an equally enviable global profile. I’ve been a fan since I stumbled upon the Calvert Avenue boutique a few years ago (and came away with a luxury laptop sleeve); in this backpack-loving corner of the capital, you can’t go far without spotting someone bearing an Ally Capellino creation. Even just en route to this interview - not a long journey, by any measure - I observe two such cool customers. When I arrive at the shop, label founder Ally - or Alison Lloyd, as she’s actually known - is chatting to a colleague, discussing an outfit from her long-defunct clothing line that’s currently on show at the V&A’s Club to Catwalk exhibition. ‘They wanted something ‘80s,’ she tells me. ‘They picked one of our tweed suits and one of our Moscow Olympics outfits.’ Lloyd talks enthusiastically about being involved, and it seems a fitting place for us to begin talking about her career in fashion. Lloyd has been ‘officially’ designing since 1980, though she tells me she was always ‘practical’, and would make things as a teenager. ‘I would copy designers like Katherine Hamnett and Kenzo,’ she says, before going on to explain that she originally studied art, believing that fashion was ‘not serious enough’. Eventually, however, she gave in to her instincts, and began studying fashion at Middlesex University. She started her own label as soon as she graduated. ‘I didn’t think I was employable,’ she laughs. ‘We were so naive, we didn’t think about whether it was hard to run a business.’ If the ‘80s was a more innocent time to work in fashion, perhaps it was also more innovative, a time when rebellious fashions pledged allegiance to music sub-cultures. The ushering in of so many new youth tribes and musical movements - goth, high camp, new romantic, post-punk, fetish and (later) rave - had an impact on the fashion business that can still be felt today. As we reflect, Ally remarks on how she had forgotten about the designer Willy Brown, and reminisces about the punk ethos that influenced her early efforts. ‘We were taught, above all, to be expressive.

In fact, I was probably one of the least expressive of my class, but it was a “have a go” time. Now, there’s a fashion treadmill: “14 collections a year but not doing as well as another designer so I better top myself”.’ The young Lloyd may have benefited from the more carefree, less corporate spirit of the time, but that’s not to say life was always easy: eventually her clothing line (cofounded with her ex-husband) went bust. ‘Our customer had aged and it was difficult to attract new custom – perhaps because we were trying to please both sides and were giving mixed messages. I had some good consultancy work in the interim [between the clothing line and the launch of Ally Capellino], but I got bored.’ In fact, the dissolution of Lloyd’s original company turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Bored and directionless, she tried her hand at bag-making; the craft suited her, and she soon made the leap to specialise in accessories under the name Ally Capellino (the latter word is Italian for ‘little hat’).

‘I was lucky in that, at that time, accessories were on the rise,’ she says. ‘People were spending a lot of money on bags. Now there’s a lot of competition from brands who can be quite controlling with the stores who stock them.’ The form and functionality of Ally’s bag designs has served her well. Judging by her studio and how she’s dressed (understated but cool – quite French), her products are all of a piece with her personality. The Bags for Bikes range is a good example; Lloyd is a keen cyclist and the range was a local hit. Now another collection is in development. ‘There are some geekier brands out there but we might have been one of the first fashion brands to do a cycle bag. It’s been really popular both here and in [second London store] Notting Hill.’ Diversifying via outside collaborations has proved to be an equally prescient strategy - and just as important to the brand’s growth. Since 2006, Ally Capellino has hooked up with superbrands including the Tate (on a line that includes a satchel, a pencil case and an artist’s roll, among other things) and Apple computers, which Lloyd credits with introducing her to the ‘techy’ side of things. ‘They were doing salaryman computer bags, so ours were a massive hit, appealing as they do to graphic designers, architects and creatives. Technology is changing so much, so there’s scope there for more products.’

is opposed to becoming too commercialised, referring to the business as like a family. ‘I like keeping everyone together. We’re a nice company and people stay,’ she says, though she admits that some expansion is necessary to keep the business afloat. Right now, Lloyd is keen to make a move into manufacturing, imagining a UK-based operation that supports and involves the local community. Back in 2010, the Wapping Project art space marked Ally Capellino’s 30th anniversary with a special retrospective, while this September will see the brand getting involved with the London Design Festival, adapting eight Bauhaus chairs for an exhibition. Credibility and collaborative know-how seem set to enable Ally Capellino to navigate the tricky waters of financial growth and independence. Slowing down what the naked eye sees in an instant, the De Beers Iris replicates different light conditions in a series of live, moving images. I can clearly see how the perfection of the diamond’s cut causes all eight facets to illuminate simultaneously and symmetrically. It’s truly mesmerising. With what I have viewed today, the De Beers promise to ‘honour the light of your love’ makes perfect sense. As I watch a kaleidoscope of sparkling shapes bounce off each diamond, it takes my breath away and I’m even tempted to propose to myself!

As I peer into the pristine display cabinets, I’m bedazzled by their stunning portfolio of designs and ask how they source their comprehensive range of diamonds. I discover that each year De Beers inspects over 25,000 diamonds in their quest to find the highest quality jewels for their clients. They qualify the rarity of the diamond through their special ‘4Cs’ criteria, which rates

Most inspiring experience? Every time I am given free hand to refurbish a person’s space. I am always honoured when people give me their trust and let me guide the space to bring it to it’s best potential within the given budget. Most treasured possession? That constantly changes as one is living in an ever-changing flow but right now it is a new table light designed by Andreas Engesvik, from Norway. It is unlike anything else, with a very different attitude which lifts my spirit. Favourite designer? There are so many, so whom to pick? It is more about particular pieces, every good designer has a highlight... like the light mentioned above by Andreas, or the Cité chair by Jean Prouvé. That again was a very innovative chair when it was launched and still is! There is Paul Kjaerholm, ever relevant, such understated elegance. But likewise Bruno Mathsson, so different from the others, they are each other’s opposites, yet all have created timeless, comfortable pieces.The list is endless and I love so many! Favourite holiday destination? Any place with beautiful nature but I particularly love Japan, the island in the south of the country and the Como Shamhbala hotels anywhere! Heaven, here I come! Favourite piece of furniture? Hmm... again, maybe the Cité chair by Jean Prouvé. Skandium best-seller? t seems the debate about single sex and co-educational schooling has raged since time immemorial, with parents swayed by argument and counter-argument on the merits and faults of each. What is certain is that school choice should be determined by the child: what will he or she feel most comfortable with? Single sex or co-educational? Perhaps a combination of both? Forest School is London’s only diamond structure school and is one of very few in the country. This means that while both boys and girls are admitted to the school, they are taught in single sex classes at key stages of their education. HOW DOES IT WORK? From the ages of 4-7, pupils are taught in coeducational classes in the Pre-Preparatory School before moving into single sex classes from the ages of 7-11. From 11-16, our pupils are attached to either the Boys’ or Girls’ School before joining the co-educational Sixth Form at 16. What makes the diamond structure work is that boys and girls can mix outside of the classroom and on the co-

curriculum. Forest School is three schools in one: our 1290 pupils are in the Preparatory School, Girls’ School or Boys’ School. All of our pupils are taught on the same school grounds in Snaresbrook, Northeast London. THE BENEFITS We are able to maximise the benefits of single sex teaching at different stages of a child’s education. Boys and girls can grow up without the pressures that come from contact and attention from the opposite sex in the classroom. Unlike at single sex schools, pupils are able to maintain an appropriate level of social contact outside of the classroom and on the co-curriculum, in preparation for life at university. Boys and girls are taught the same curriculum and in many cases by the same teachers. Our structure gives us the flexibility to tailor teaching methods according to both the age and sex of the class. As Forest is three schools in one, we are in the privileged position of being able to take advantage of the many positive characteristics of a small school while benefiting from the infrastructure and feel of a much larger school. If you’re hoping to look a million dollars, it tallies that you want to feel it too; at the very least it’s good to know you’ve spent the afternoon somewhere that looks like it’s had a million dollars/pounds spent on it. Time is money, after all... but I digress.

Beauty

In keeping with the Aveda ethos, the salon is a Zen haven, all natural decor, wood furnishings and bamboo motifs. It’s a ‘lifestyle’ salon, so expect equally beautiful treatment rooms; no gloomy cells or pop-up beds here. There’s an impressive list of services and treatments, from a Chakra Balancing Massage to a Rosemary Mint Awakening Body Wrap, so you can make a day of it and really spoil yourself. The level of professionalism is unparalleled, too, which is one reason Aveda salons are building such an envious reputation in the industry.

Hair

Gary (yes, you can book the man himself) talks through my colour options – I need to rectify a badly bleached fringe situation which is causing no end of frizz frustration, especially in the current humidity. He identifies a shade that will give me more bang for my buck (pun intended) and talks me through the process: colour rescue but with maximum gloss, as normally delivered by a toner. What’s more, all Aveda products are naturally derived from plants, even the colour washes, so they aren’t pumped full of nasties. Comfortably ensconced in a super deluxe chair/washing station (this salon means business), I’m given a Scalp Detox and Massage (your head is an ecosystem, apparently, and massage is vital to a healthy head of hair). Gary is a fountain of hair-knowledge and furnishes me with some pearls of wisdom which reveal (a) that I should never have put peroxide on my cows-licks in the first place, and (b) how to blow-dry a stubborn fringe. Wow; my hair is going to get a double-pronged attack once it’s finally recovered from being bleached to death. While I wait for the hair treatment to do its work, I grab a manicure, feeling pretty smug about killing two beauty birds with one stone (I’m guessing women even more time-poor than me could aim for the full hair, mani and pedi combo). At the end of my appointment, my hair is as sleek as the salon itself: a glossy bastion of health and vitality with every last vestige of frizz smoothed and blasted away. An absolute result. Stars of the menu include the Tenenbaums Dinner, the Foxy Doughnut and the Bee-keeping Society’s Chicken. A

dmittedly, Canary Wharf is not my usual haunt – with its sky-high buildings and suits – but I was looking forward to my dinner reservation at the Pearson Rooms immensely, because whenever I told a friend my impending visit, I was met with a *squeal* of approval. What better recommendation is there? The lift feels very grown-up, and it’s impossible not to get swept up in the atmosphere – which is positively bustling. On arrival, we’re led swiftly to the stylish bar for a refreshing hibiscus mojito recommended by our friendly waiter, Stefano, who seemed to be on a mission to make sure my friend and I were unable to walk home in a straight line. The interior is very nice indeed, with exactly the right amount of retro glamour. It’s all wooden floors, reclaimed furniture and leather seats, but subtly accomplished, with a full awareness that the stunning views of Canada Square from the floor-to-ceiling windows are the real pièce de résistance. The menu is also a pleasant surprise – comprised of a diverse mixture of salads, starters, sandwiches, pasta and mains, it blends seamlessly from brunch to dinner. To start, I choose chargrilled asparagus and poached duck egg on brioche with Hollandaise sauce and parmesan. The verdict? Just wow: a hearty and absolutely delicious dish. Upon learning that my friend is vegetarian, Stefano whisks a bowl of crispy courgette fries under our noses and, before we know it, we’re tucking into our mains; Whitstable crab tagliolini with cherry tomatoes and chilli for me; tagliatelle with peas, courgette, wild rocket pesto and toasted pine nuts for my companion. The portions show a distinct lack of pretension and the dishes are simple enough that you might imagine you could give them a go at home (I can’t vouch for the results, however). Now on a quest not only to intoxicate us but also to see us off half a stone heavier, Stefano insists we try the desserts, serving up three scoops of sorbet (mango, raspberry and coconut) and three of ice cream (chocolate, pistachio and vanilla) forthwith. The fiend. By this point we’ve died and gone to heaven and, watching the sun set behind the huge glass skyscrapers, I suddenly understand the urban beauty of this part of London. Or perhaps it’s the three massive courses, hibiscus mojito, passion fruit and chili cocktail plus glass of wine talking. AQUA SHARD Daniel Agnew discovers panoramic dining in one of Europe’s tallest buildings

T

owering over London like a postmodern cathedral, aqua shard (no caps, please, it’s all very contemporary) is a restaurant where everything happens on a spectacular scale. Born out of and celebrating London’s status in the new global economy, the culinary establishment resides on level 31 of the Shard and presides over a magnificent bay of stars come nightfall. Offering 360-degree views of the capital, the skyline lights up like never before – though it’s important to note that aqua shard is a restaurant, not a tourist attraction. Designed by Jestico and Whiles, the 220-cover establishment has two wings, which take as their guiding motifs two classic English beverages, gin and tea. The service is impeccable, while the decor embraces a minimalist style that ensures the jaw-dropping view is always the star of the show. Not that the food doesn’t muster some very stiff competition. Aqua shard is the brainchild of entrepreneur David Yeo, who has worked alongside head chef Anthony Garlando to create a new and very British menu. Garlando previously worked with the legendary Pierre Gagnaire, and it was evidently not time wasted: the menu offers a new vision for the British culinary tradition. The grilled octopus and Scottish mackerel makes for a gorgeous starter, complemented by tomato sorbet, pickled shallots and aubergine dressing. A glass of Veronese 2011 Marzemino Delle

Venezie provides a delicate floral aroma to accompany mains of roasted wood pigeon and Yorkshire rib-eye, and while the prices hover around the £30 mark, the dishes prove to be exceptionally good value. Served with a blackcurrant sauce, the wood pigeon is a sensual delight, while the rib-eye’s tenderness is stirred by a melodic shallot jam. With some imaginative sides and desserts, guests may want to linger long enough to enjoy cocktails and star-gazing after dinner. As distant boats bob along the Thames, the understated glamour of the capital makes for a beautiful experience. Situated inside western Europe’s tallest building, aqua shard will almost certainly require a few weeks’ advance booking, but its thrilling panorama and top-notch cuisine make it well worth a little forward planning. Edwina Langley: So, tell us about your new venture. Tom Aikens: It’s in Canary Wharf and it’s very similar to Tom’s Kitchen in Chelsea in terms of the menu (home cooked food) and service style. I think the difference between the two is that in the City, lunchtimes are going to be a lot busier. We’ve got a big bar and also a private dining room, which fits about 12-14 and which we’ll turn into a kiddies’ room at the weekend. We’ve got a deli right next to us as well, where we’ll serve breakfast things in the morning (granola, muesli), sandwiches and pre-made boxed salads for lunch, and cookies and cakes throughout the day. EL: Why did you choose that particular location? TA: Canary Wharf is a great place – you have a captive audience. We’re quite different to our competitors there, like Canteen and Roka, who don’t have the deli offering. It’ll be

interesting to see how it goes. We’re hoping there will be a conveyor belt of people going from one Tom’s Kitchen to another, and then another and another… EL: And then world domination! TA: And then world domination, indeed. It’s exciting. And it’s nice for us as it gives us the chance to cross-train staff and promote them from within, moving them across from restaurant to restaurant. EL: Has being a new dad changed you as a chef? TA: It’s changed my whole life. At weekends, I’d always be working and running around doing things but now she’s twenty months old, I simply play with her. It’s really nice because it de-stresses me. Though there is the lack of sleep. I never have a lie-in these days – the only downside. EL: But you must be used to early starts, being a chef and all...

TA: Yes but you do wish for at least one day where you could catch up on sleep EL: Do you help out? TA: I’m very hands-on at weekends and do a lot of the cooking, especially on Sundays. I almost always do a roast. EL: Can you describe your roasts because I’m certain they’re nothing like my roasts. TA: What do you do? EL: Umm… roast beef, potatoes. Bog standard. Nothing special. TA: Ok well, I generally do beef too. So I’ll do a rolled and tied sirloin – EL: Rolled and tied? TA: It’s just a rib of beef, cut off the bone, which you then roll and tie EL: With your hands? TA: No…with string. Give it a trim, nice and tight, so it keeps its shape. I always have people

FOOD shallots and red wine. Reduce that down so it becomes nice and sticky. And then later obviously I’ll do roast potatoes – in beef dripping. EL: You have that just lying around too I suppose? TA: Absolutely! And then vegetables – carrots, peas or broad beans – depending on what’s in season. My daughter will have a concoction of all of that, mushed up – feeding her can sometimes be quite difficult.

EL: During those moments do you ever think to yourself ‘Some people would kill to be eating this’? TA: Yes, but she doesn’t really give a sh*t!

EL: Gosh – heartbreaking! TA: It was! I shed a tear. I did! I was only 24 and I was, like… [pulls a sad face]. I couldn’t believe it. But then I thought ‘Ok, you do your thing, I’ll do mine. See ya later’ [laughs]. I think we’re going to try to do something next year. It’d be great a PR story for us – two twins, two great chefs.

EL: So she’s your harshest critic? TA: Yes. Sometimes she cries, throws it on the floor and turns her nose up at it. Our trick is to bung in something creamy, like cottage cheese, which she loves. It’s our way of getting her to eat things. Not all the time though. For breakfast I’ll make fresh pancakes or waffles. EL: How are you not the size of a house? TA: I go to the gym every afternoon when I’m having a break, for an hour or so. EL: That’s not really a break. TA: It’s an active break – it’s a nice way to escape, to de-stress a bit. So I go to the gym or do a couple of laps of Hyde Park.

So yes lots of people, which means I’ll take the beef out the night before so it’s relaxed by the morning. I’ll start at 10.30am and slow cook it for 2-2.5 hours. Medium rare, of course. I serve it with Yorkshire pudding, a nice red wine sauce and the usual horseradish [mimics grating]. EL: That’s not usual horseradish. Horseradish comes out of a jar. TA: We do sometimes use jars, but we’ll grate some fresh in there too. And then add a bit of extra crème fraiche. For the red wine sauce we’ll do a reduction. EL: No Bisto gravy? TA: [Laughs] Definitely not Bisto gravy. I’ll have taken some stock home from work – never a cube – and then I’ll do a reduction with thyme, bay leaves, pepper corns,

EL: You have a twin brother, Rob, who is also a chef. How did you both get into the culinary world? TA: My mother was a very good home cook and my father was in the wine business. So as kids we grew up amongst good food and wine. We lived in Norfolk and my mother was a keen gardener. From the age of six we started growing our own vegetables – carrots and rhubarb. We started cooking by the age of eight in the kitchen. Simple stuff, like cakes. Then we progressed to making a main meal by the age of 12. EL: Impressive! TA: We knew we wanted to be chefs. And we both didn’t like school. We wanted to join a catering college in Norfolk and when I found out you didn’t need qualifications, I thought, ‘Great! This is the career for me!’ I could see the horror in my parents’ faces when I told them we were going to be chefs. I think they saw us deep-frying chicken at KFC. EL: How was it starting out back then? TA: It was very difficult to begin with. Long hours, tougher working conditions, tougher bosses. But that didn’t matter. Because if you actually got a job in a Michelin-starred restaurant, you were so thrilled you worked your socks off. When I first came to London I was

EL: Then what happened? TA: Then I went to work in France and Rob went to America. My idea was that we’d go abroad separately for a bit then come back and open a restaurant. But when I was working in Paris, just before Rob went to the US, he came over and told me he didn’t want to work together.

EL: Finally, you won the starter course for this year’s Great British Menu. Tell us about it. We’ve heard you’re all hugely competitive in the kitchens. TA: We all respect each other a lot, but once you’re there, you’re in competition. It’s very tense and stressful. Even at the level we’re at, we can all crumble under the pressure. It’s also quite funny to see yourself on TV. I often think, ‘Oh my God, how could I have been like that, I’m going to bits!’ You can literally fall to bloody pieces on camera. EL: Has Pru Leith ever cooked for you? TA: Ha – no! It would be quite nice to turn the tables. But in all seriousness, it’s great fun. And I like that viewers can actually see the attention and skill we put into each dish. But when you watch it on TV, you don’t see how knackered we really are. Being on your feet all that time, with the cameras constantly stopping and starting… You’re also thinking about how you’re coming across – no one wants to be that complete tosser or the mute. You want to be seen as someone who’s fun, lively and chatty – otherwise you just look completely lost and crap. EL: What did you like about the ‘Comic Relief ’ brief in particular? TA: Bringing fun and humour to dishes. Most people think chefs are miserable gits, that we don’t have a funny side, we’ve all got chips on our shoulders and are grumpy and serious. EL: I’m sure you’re never like that. Ever. TA: No [smiles]. With the Comic Relief brief, people could see we have a sense of humour. That we can at least have a joke and a laugh – which was nice.

INTERIORS What was the first thing you thought when confronted with the space? It was in need of some serious enlivening and spatial definition. I was impressed by its handsome proportions and the original windows in the main reception area. Do you approach period houses in the same way or is every property a different story? Every property evokes a varied response from me. I’m often inspired by the raffish splendour of a crumbling period property yet am open to working with a modernist box on a cliff. Do you have a favourite era in architecture or design? I’m having a 1970s moment right now, though I don’t profess to be loyal to any particular era or movement, I find that too limiting How do you add a personal touch – what are the owners like? Curating anglocentric pieces for them and incorporating existing objects and family heirlooms into the scheme. The overall design had to appeal to a professional, US based couple who were keen to inhabit a quintessentially British space. What would be your dream residential job? A Muscovite’s urban palace or a surf shack retreat in Costa Rica. How do you stay one step ahead of the latest interior trends? I try to teeter on the periphery of trends, drawing inspiration from art and nature. My current art obsessions are: Michael Landy’s Saint’s Alive exhibition at the National Gallery and my dear friend Alice Instone’s use of carnal blush tones. What style do you prefer for your own home? functional decadence interspersed with pockets of whimsy What area of london do you live in and why? Hampstead because of the heath, the schools, the dickensian lamp posts and a pint of prawns at the holly bush pub. What constitutes good design for you? Lacroix!’ Decorated by the eccentric French designer, the interiors are pretty fruity to say the least. SKIES Jo Caird visits South Africa to investigate Johannesburg’s cultural rebirth

L

et’s not beat about the bush – Johannesburg has a bit of a reputation problem. When I told friends I was going, most made ‘are you sure it’s safe?’ faces, while the man next to me on my outbound journey intoned worrying crime statistics until the in-flight entertainment began. But while it’s undeniably the case that Joburg is more dangerous than, say, Padstow, crime rates have been falling for years now – and as long as you take sensible precautions (the kind you would take in any major city) you’ll be fine. Johannesburg’s unfortunate reputation, along with the fact that Cape Town is better known as a city destination, means that visitors to South Africa tend to pass through on their way elsewhere or skip the city altogether. It won’t be this way for long, though – Jozi is a city on the up. After checking in at the Peech Hotel, a boutique establishment with a gorgeous garden in one of Joburg’s well-to-do northern suburbs, I travel to Newtown to get my bearings on a walking tour of the cultural quarter. Joburg’s Central Business District (CBD) was a no-go area for a long time, but a decade of urban regeneration has borne fruit, bringing money back into the city centre and transforming it into

a vibrant, creative place. A five-minute stroll takes you past three museums, a handful of trendy bars, a theatre and a dance venue. It’s quiet in the daytime, but when I return on Saturday night the area is buzzing. It’s after 2am when I head back to the Peech that night, but there’s no sign of the fun stopping

at DJ bar Ko’spotong, and young clubbers are queuing out the door of the Bassline. When it comes to urban regeneration in the CBD, however, Braamfontein and Maboneng are the places to watch. I head to Braamfontein for

its Neighbourhoods Market, a funky collection of food stalls and local clothing and jewellery designers that sets up every Saturday in a multistorey car park. I wander around sipping a glass of South African chenin blanc and nibble on samosas, grilled halloumi, bratwurst, waffles and ice cream, buying a vintage playsuit while I’m at it. There’s a market with a similar feel at Maboneng on Sundays; it’s part of Arts on Main, a recent development that includes an airy gallery space, a couple of designer shops, a terrace bar and Canteen, a very nice brasserie whose tables spill out into a courtyard filled with olive trees. My lunch is luxuriously laid-back – a holiday from my holiday – and a post-prandial perusal of Main Street reveals several more eateries that go straight on to my ‘to try’ list - as well as The Living Room, a breezy terrace bar with great views over the urban landscape. But it’s not just the centre of Johannesburg that’s worth exploring. Not far from my hotel are two of Jozi’s most respected commercial art galleries. The Goodman and Everard Read are both open to the public and well worth a visit, whether or not you’re considering investing in the South African art market. And don’t miss Circa, the Everard Read’s newest space, an extraordinary optical illusion of a building

that hosts changing exhibitions of world class contemporary art. On the day of my gallery visits, I stop for a bite of lunch at Tasha’s, a buzzy eatery in the local area with an enormous menu that includes everything from liver on toast to fish and chips. My salad Niçoise is delicious but so generously proportioned that I am unable to finish it – not the first or the last time I am defeated by a plate of food this week. Further north still is Liliesleaf, where Nelson Mandela and the other grandees of the African National Congress were arrested in 1963 for plotting the overthrow of the apartheid regime. This interactive museum, whose exhibits include audio accounts of those involved, as well as the room where Mandela lived in disguise as a hired man prior to his arrest, is very sensitively curated and deeply moving. I visit the Apartheid Museum the next day to try to put this important episode in the country’s troubled history in its full context. The two experiences, though not exactly pleasant, are vital for anyone hoping to understand modern South Africa. Another South African essential is barbecue – called braai in Afrikaans, it’s a national passion and features on almost every menu I come across in Joburg. It’s a speciality at Moyo, a wonderfully quirky restaurant where a make-up artist paints

delicate designs on diners’ faces as they wait for their food. My friend and I opt to share two of the braai options on offer: her boerewors – or farmers’ sausages – were rich and meaty, as different from a British sausage as you could get, while my fillet steak was one of the best I’ve ever had. Most people who come to Johannesburg also head out on safari, but for those who can’t spare the time, there are opportunities to get up close and personal with animals on a day trip from the city. At Lion Park, which is somewhere between a reserve and a zoo, I am taken on a guided drive through enclosures containing herbivores, lions, cheetahs and wild dogs. It’s not quite the savannah, but our guide is very knowledgeable and the benefit of a place like this is that you’re guaranteed animal action: out on safari proper you can go hours with only wildebeest for company. Another thrilling perk is the chance to spend time in the lion cub enclosure. I won’t soon forget the all-too-brief minutes I spent with these magnificent animals as they dozed in the shade. Not far from here is the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO site, where evidence has been found of some of the earliest human and pre-human activity. I wander, awestruck, through the Sterkfontein Caves, gazing at ancient stalactites and stalagmites and an eerie

underground lake that lies silent and still in the darkness. Back in the city the following day I take a guided cycle tour through Soweto, once one of South Africa’s most infamous townships and now essentially a suburb of Joburg. Parts of it are still very poor and there are certainly areas it would be inadvisable for tourists to visit, but much of Soweto is now comfortably middle-class and it’s fascinating to have my expectations of such a place confounded. My final evening in Joburg begins with a ‘sundowner’ cocktail at recently opened boutique hotel 54 on Bath. I’ve truly embraced South Africa’s sundowner tradition this week, sampling old school colonial style at the Polo Bar at the Westcliff Hotel and contemporary elegance at the San Deck at the Sandton Sun Hotel. All three venues have fantastic views over the city, but 54 on Bath – with its garden terrace – is my favourite. As I watch the sun set and the full moon rise over this sprawling city, it strikes just how much more of Johannesburg there is still to discover.

s a Londoner born and bred, I am biased I know, but this city will always be very close to my heart. Having spent my early working years as a design engineer, and fifteen years as a teacher, it’s fair to say that moving into estate agency was quite a departure! When I got my degree from Greenwich University it was with the sole aim to have a career in education, and I became a senior school teacher responsible for overseeing numerous subjects. I really enjoyed teaching, but like many others before me I became disillusioned over time with the ever-increasing bureaucracy and politics affecting the profession, so I looked for a new challenge. Construction and the Built Environment is an incredibly important industry and architectural taste is very much an individual thing. I adore old period properties full of history and character. I am also inspired by the exciting modern architecture produced by the likes of Sir Richard Rogers. Buildings like Norman Foster’s Gherkin and the Shard by Renzo Piano have really uplifted London’s skyline. When the partners from the estate agency invited me to work for them in Shoreditch I gave it a go and I am so glad I did. It is a fascinating market to be in, with plenty of opportunities. This part of London is choc full of creative types who help to create a great vibe. It is very noticeable how many

of these Shoreditch residents have moved into Stoke Newington recently. This trend is well set and the influx will continue to bolster an already thriving art community. IDM Estates is flourishing after becoming part of the IDM group of companies. They built terrific developments like Gainsborough Studios and Batley Place, so when the opportunity came up to manage the new office on Stokey’s High Street I jumped at the chance. Two of England’s finest clubs, both steeped in history, are in easy reach of Stoke Newington’s locals. They are so close to the world famous home of the Spurs, and when White Hart Lane gets rockin it’s no place for the faint-hearted I can tell yer! But there are always alternatives of course and the Emirates stadium is close by for those who prefer a less noisy environment. Stokey has become such a vibrant and sought after place to live in recent years and it’s easy to see why. Clissold Park is a beautiful, leafy space to take the family, play sports, or just relax in. If you’re looking for coffee and a bite to eat then look no further than Etcetera on Stoke Newington High Street; it’s also a great place for a drink in the evening, with good music guaranteed. am familiar with leaseholders having options to collectively buy the freehold of their block of flats but I own a leasehold house and I was wondering if I have a right to buy the freehold of my house?

Indeed you do. Subject to meeting certain

criteria, the Leasehold Reform Act 1967 (“the ’67 Act”) gives a leaseholder the right to buy the freehold or extend the lease of their house.

The main qualifying criteria are: 1. The house must reasonably be considered to be a house and meet certain requirements. For example, that it is vertically divisible from an adjoining property. 2. ichard Rogers, one of the greatest British architects of our generation, turned 80 last month. His work, which spans over 50 years, is being marked by an exhibition at the Royal Academy. One of his most striking and revered designs is Lloyds of London, which has divided opinion since its opening in 1986. A building likely included within Prince Charles’ view of “monstrous carbuncle” modern architecture, it’s a view shared by some. Equally, there are many who admire the groundbreaking architecture and its successful juxtaposition with the surrounding buildings. Indeed, by granting it Grade I Listing status, English Heritage have confirmed its modern architectural credentials, and in doing so made it the youngest building ever to achieve this status. What must not be forgotten is the role that the planning system played in granting permission for the building. A system which is currently undergoing a radical shake up, culminating in the creation of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) along with greater rights to extend and/or change the use of a building without the need for planning permission (known as permitted development). The adoption of the NPPF aims to shift planning policy to central government, diluting much of the ‘local’ planning guidance, which can vary significantly. Perhaps its most controversial and publicised policy is ‘a presumption in favour of sustainable development’ (economic, social and environmental sustainability). Combined with increased permitted development rights to change a building’s use or extend it, many of London’s boroughs are racing to update their planning policy to counteract this perceived potential explosion in development. Central to the new policies is that design must be of the highest quality. In at least one north London borough the new policies have been seen to pose a threat to the built environment. In tightening up policy to counteract this perceived threat, the creation of modern architecture has been worryingly threatened. At a very basic level, justification of whether a building’s design is acceptable is whether or not it ‘fits in’. In certain instances this has resulted in such exacting design guidance that a new building must use traditional materials and details. The real threat is in encouraging the creation of pastiche architecture, unable to last the test of time. A building doesn’t fit in because it uses the same materials, copies a traditional window detail or replicates its neighbour. A building fits in because it complements the buildings and landscape around it, that its scale, mass, proportion and materiality are appropriate, that it provides interest and excitement and above all has a sense of place. If we concentrate on making every new addition even better than its neighbour, then we will continue to build a city rich in style and architecture. Planners have got one of the toughest jobs around in London but they must embrace and encourage development through the implementation of high quality modern design and architecture; without it Lloyds of London may forever hold the title of the youngest building ever to achieve Grade I status.
