his month is all about Alexander McQueen. As the V&A prepares for the long-awaited opening of Savage Beauty on 14 March, a flurry of books and even a play about the designer are hitting the headlines. The exhibition was a sell-out during its run in New York (read our preview on page 20 for Martin Roth's account of it attracting even people who never go to exhibitions) and here in its expanded incarnation it is likely to outsell even last year's record-breaking David Bowie exhibition. Which is really saying something in museum terms. Additional dates have already been added and my quick look at bookings indicates that if you want to see it on a Saturday, you'll have to wait until late May. Huge, popular shows are a big part of the V&A's future, as director Martin Roth tells us in our interview with him on page 26. Of course, not literally everything is about McQueen this month.

11 CH_MAR15_EDS_LETTER.indd 11

We are also excited, for instance, about Anthropologie's fifth birthday celebrations, which are set to transform the King's Road store into a super stylish cultural hotbed for an entire month. There will be art and interiors, health and fitness, several talks and lots of cake and gin as well as unbridled shopping. Which covers most things that people want, on the whole (especially since the spring looks are so beautiful that no-one will get out of there without purchases). Otherwise, we've got the usual mix of beautiful things to buy and wear, places to go and properties to drool over. Enjoy March.

THE GREAT Europe's only major retrospective of the work of visionary fashion designer Alexander McQueen opens at the V&A this month. Absolutely has a preview Wo r d s p e n d l e h a r t e

hen Martin Roth, director of the V&A, introduced this exhibition to hundreds of eager fashion press last year, one personal story stood out. During Savage Beauty's sell-out run at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, Roth had a stopover at JFK airport and he calculated enough time to leave the airport, see the exhibition and return for his connecting flight. The surly border guard was unimpresed. A routine interrogation as to Roth's intentions on entering the city culminated in a single word: 'no'. Roth assumed he was being refused permission to enter the United States, but the 'no' referred instead to his chance of getting a ticket. 'It's been sold out for months,' said the surly border guard. For Roth, this was an important moment. Savage Beauty was no niche, fashion pack attraction, it was the museum's biggest-selling show ever, attracting record numbers of visitors in its three month residence.

SAVAGE BEAUTY was no niche, FASHION PACK ATTRACTION,

it was the museum's BIGGEST SELLING SHOW EVER

Even border police were going to see it. Judith Thurman of The New Yorker had said: "even if you never bother with fashion shows, go to this one," and clearly New York had taken her at her word – the museum had to open on Mondays specially to cope with the unstoppable demand and queues lasted for hours. Alexander McQueen is widely held to be one of the most talented designers of a generation. His extraordinary creative talent and sense of innovation were innate and backed up by a profound grasp of tailoring and an eclectic range of influences. McQueen's catwalk shows were notorious for their use

of unconventional materials – glass, leather, feathers and boning were all commonplace – and McQueen's fans included such sartorial eccentrics as Bjork, Lady Gaga and, of course, the inimitable fashion supremo Isabella Blow. Four years after New York, the London incarnation of this insanely popular exhibition is a third larger. Curated by Claire Wilcox, the V&A's senior curator of fashion, it features 30 additional garments, including some rare early pieces, lent by private individuals and collectors such as Katy England and Annabelle Neilson. There are further pieces from the Isabella Blow Collection and the House of Givenchy, and a whole new London-focused section focusing on McQueen's fledgling development as a designer. Roth says: "I am thrilled that this magnificent show is coming to London and feel passionately that the V&A is its natural home. Lee Alexander McQueen presented his work here during his lifetime and studied the museum's wide-ranging public collections of tailoring, painting, art, photography and books as inspiration for his visionary

the V&A’s reputation as an innovative international stage for art – and which attracted Roth in the first place. ‘The V&A has a very strange story,’ explains Roth in his guttural German accent. ‘The museum started right in the middle of the 19th century, the time of all the social movements of the 19th century when a lot of brilliant new ideas were emerging. The reason why it’s so important is because my predecessors didn’t collect art like their peers did in other museums. Yes, they assembled a very beautiful traditional art collection, but at the same time the museum was about new, applied arts, like engineering, architecture and fashion. It’s like a double DNA.’ This ‘double DNA’ has continued at the V&A ever since, symbiotically inspiring the next generation of London’s designers from this corner of South Kensington. ‘In the past, it was just apple trees here,’ says Roth. ‘Now you have Imperial College, the Royal College of Arts, the Royal Albert Hall – all of which was paid for with profits from the Great Exhibition in 1851.’ As a result, Exhibition Road was born, creating a cultural epicentre for

peak to anyone who visited the David Bowie Is exhibition at the V&A last year and you’re probably going to be stuck listening to them gushing for a long time. A roaring success, the exhibition drew a record 311,000 visitors before it finally closed its doors back in August. Now it’s touring the world, taking up temporary residence in Toronto, Sao Paolo, Chicago, Paris and the Netherlands, and continuing to pull in the crowds wherever it goes. The brains behind this blockbuster exhibition is Martin Roth, the museum’s straight-talking German director. ‘It was originally a small display that I wanted to show my colleagues,’ explains Roth. ‘The more I learned about the exhibition, the more I convinced my team to make it bigger and bigger. They said it wasn’t worth it. But it wasn’t because I knew it would be a success; it was just fun for me! I liked it. We were not at all prepared for that level of success. XXXXXX ARTS & CULTURE / XXXXXXX / PROFILE X / XXXXXXX London. ‘I believe in something called genius loci,’ muses Roth, ‘that there’s a kind of spirit to a certain area. I don’t mean that my predecessors are going around as ghosts here – but sometimes I think about it. It’s more that the environment here symbolised the future of London. I think it still does.’ This future came in the form of countless burgeoning artists and designers who would come to the V&A for inspiration, capitalising on Prince Albert’s legacy. The most notable example is Alexander McQueen, who would visit the museum’s extensive archives as a student, and is now the focus of the V&A’s

latest exhibition, Savage Beauty. ‘There are 30,000 Imperial College students here every day, producing the future,’ says Roth. ‘I know a lot of the designers at Masserati, Ferrari, Porche etc – 95% were trained here at the RCA. It’s a great atmosphere here. Sure, South Kensington is a very bourgeois area, but at the same time it’s very vibrant. You don’t always see it here in the street, but it’s here. That’s one of the reasons why I like it.’ It’s this inspirational atmosphere that Roth hopes to replicate in east London, where a new outpost of the V&A is set to open this year. ‘It’s definitely not going to be like Tate Britain and Tate Modern. I don’t want to have that line where here everything is before 1945 and there is everything after,’ reveals Roth. ‘East London will be more out of the applied idea of the V&A – there will be a research institution, which will be called our ‘thing tank’, and a big space for exhibitions. Probably most important though is the synergy with UAL – all the fashion design David Bowie is drew students will a record 311,000 be there visitors last year

in the same building. What we want to do is work with these practitioners.’ Adding to London’s already fertile cultural landscape, this new branch of the V&A is just one more reason why the city has evolved into a global art hub in recent years. ‘When I came for the first time to London, it was not this exciting,’ Roth recalls. ‘There were artistic

pockets like the King’s Road for example, but now there’s this kind of overall excitement. East London in particular is thrilling.’ So is channeling this thrilling atmosphere Roth’s vision for the new V&A here? ‘I’m not really good at visions,’ he chuckles. ‘There was a German Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt, who once said that if you have a vision, go see a doctor. For me it’s more about reality, and making things happen.’ And when Martin Roth is in charge, you can rest assured they most certainly will.  Savage Beauty is running at the V&A until 2 August; vam.ac.uk

WAIST NOT WANT NOT Wo r d s v i o l e t n e y l o r - l e y l a n d

’m not beating around the bush - I have become addicted to I Keeping up with the Kardashians. Like a large minority of people, I’m now obsessed with Kim and Chloe’s awesome bottoms, which give the illusion of particularly teeny waists. Although irritatingly, and in Kim’s case especially, these girls do have tiny waists. Gah! Unfortunately my Latino-physique is a far-off dream. Yet, while some lunatics pop off to their local surgeon for implants to create the perfect waist-to-bum-ratio, I sit here wondering (when there’s a cheaper, more stylish, less mentally deranged and what’s more REVERSABLE solution) why?! They’d evidently never heard of waisttraining: shrinking your waist by regularly donning a corseted garment, which you gradually tighten. Bizarrely, despite having co-designed a corset range, it never occurred to me that anyone other than Burlesque artists would do this. So, I decided to try it – well my version, which didn’t include going to the gym in one (like Kim). Wearing a corset for three consecutive evenings, it appeared I had lost threequarters of an inch around my waist, not only this but it actually looked smaller. I can’t vouch for this method’s lasting effects or whether success was due to being unable to eat as much dinner, but it worked. So here are my three favourite corsets – the Violet’s Box Nude Victorian overbust £295, the M&S Collection Firm Control Waist Sculpt Panelled Waspie £25, and the Chantal Thomass Secret d’ Alcove Basque , £395 ● V I O L E T ' S B OX by Violet Naylor-Leyland

MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION

… is Japan. I love the aesthetic: the art, manuscripts, traditions, clothes. I feel that the Japanese have a philosophy of life which respects beauty and appreciates humanity. They really take the time to celebrate nature and value the importance of family.

MY STYLE ICON

… is Frida Kahlo. Beautifully spirited and bold. For me, it’s not simply her style, but also the passion for her work which was open and honest.

MY FAVOURITE ITEM OF CLOTHING EVER … is a fabulous grey waisted suit by John Galliano that I bought in the 90s.

MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER

… is Pierre Guariche. I’ve been thinking of redecorating my home recently and I keep coming back to the simple beauty of his furniture. I particularly love his lamps.

MY FAVOURITE PIECE FROM CARAMEL’S NEW COLLECTION Eva Karayiannis

MY MOST TREASURED POSSESSION

MY FAVOURITE PIECES OF ART

… are early Cycladic art sculptures, particularly those that represent the female form. They have a flat, geometric quality that has a strong resonance with a lot of modern art.

… are the earthenware plates by Makoto Kagoshima that my husband Akis gave me on my birthday. I love the strong colours and lively brushstrokes. I find his techniques fascinating.

35 NH_MARCH15_Moodboard.indd 35

… It’s always hard to choose but I do love our Sese Dress in blue gingham. Vintage inspired, the unique woven fabric and tent-like structure render this piece both fresh and nostalgic.

UP TO SIX INCHES!

STEP UP

Want to design your own footwear? Look no further than Tony Andrews... Tell Absolutely about the history of your company? Tony Andrews has been making footwear for 56 years – a skill passed down from his father. He is dedicated and passionate about creating footwear. Designed to look both attractive and stylish, each pair he makes is corrective, supportive and tailored to each customer’s needs. Tony has a staff of 12 and can make footwear for any occasion, in recordtiming.

What materials do you use? Tony has a vast selection of materials in many colours and prints. He also uses animal skins – crocodile, snake, stingray, ostrich – which are mainly sourced from Italy.

How does the process work? Here, we measure each customer’s feet, take photographs of them and then make impressions. Orthotics can be made if needed. Then, the client picks a style – or creates a new one.

What are your most popular styles – for women and men? For women, a slip-on court shoe. For men, an Oxford full brogue. We can design a man’s footwear to increase his height up to six inches!

What do you like about your location on New Cavendish Street? It’s busy and very trendy. What have you got coming up for 2015? We have just received 20,000 exciting skins – leather and suede in thousands of colours and prints. We also have a new range of fashionable lasts arriving; these make the shape of the shoe and therefore many new designs will be available. 

What is the most common foot complaint you come across? It’s the one where customers have one foot bigger than the other. They find it difficult to source readymade shoes that fit. One shoe is generally too tight whilst the other is too loose.

47 CH_MAR15_FOOTWEAR.mj.indd 47

Can you tell us about your celebrity clients. Are celebrity endorsements important to you? Kathleen Turner is a fan of our work. And other celebrities too, which we’re afraid we can’t talk about. Celebrity endorsements are important to any business, and that applies to us too!

fter several very hectic weeks towards deadlines, my A working nails were in dire need of some attention. Blink at Bluebird is perhaps not widely known about, which seems such a shame as it’s perfectly located if you’re out and about on the King’s Road and in need of a little TLC; it is a relaxing oasis away from the hustle and bustle. On arrival I was met by Farah, and although I was somewhat embarrassed and apologetic about the state of my nails she instantly put me at ease with her very friendly and professional manner. Farah expertly filed and shaped my nails while I chose a fabulous metallic grey polish called ‘Metro’, from a vast selection of nail colours. I had lots of questions about the different options and knowledgeable Farah was more than happy to discuss everything. As a fairly active person who enjoys circuit-classes, boxing and most recently rock climbing, I opted for the Artistic Gel Polish as it is much stronger and unlikely to chip for at least two weeks. The treatment took approximately an hour and I left feeling refreshed and extremely happy with my shiny new, very neat nails. u

INCH TECH Absolutely seeks out the truth about celebrity favourite HYPOXI®

S

pring is in the air and so is the approaching fear of getting ‘bikini ready’. So where better to get motivated and ready to kickstart a healthy regime than Knightsbridge's HYPOXI®? This is the sliming treatment renowned for helping tighten and tone those stubborn problem areas that your personal trainer just can’t budge. Dajana Jackson Prosnanova, the owner of HYPOXI® Knightsbridge clinic tells us all we need to know. The Hypoxi-Method® is the first patented training concept to combine advanced vacuum and compression

technology with exercise to stimulate the body’s fat metabolism in troubled places i.e. stomach, hips and thighs. It is a fast and sustainable fat-burning treatment, with independent studies showing it to be up to three times more effective than regular exercise for targeted fat loss. “You can drop a dress size in a matter of weeks and lose inches in areas you have been struggling with for years!” explains Dajana. Dajana’s journey with HYPOXI® started seven years ago when she was approached to run the Body Clinic in Harrods. After learning the method and establishing a very busy practice, there came an opportunity to set up an

independent studio on Beauchamp Place. “I love working with people. My clients come with different body concerns: lose weight, tone up, get rid of cellulite... Every woman wants to have the best figure! Sometimes I see clients whose weight or shape has been affected by health issues or injury. HYPOXI® is the perfect and effective exercise solution even when you can’t or prefer not go to the gym. It is a very gentle cycling session in a vacuum pod. With the vacuum we stimulate blood circulation directly to the fatty tissue in the targeted areas and your body is fat burning where you want it.” Since opening her clinic almost a year ago, Dajana has cleverly collaborated with the industry's elite, including a nutritionist, beauticians and holistic therapists, enabling Dajana to offer her clients that little extra within the studio. Salsa: • 1 avocado, peeled, stoned and cut into small cubes • 1 mango, peeled, stoned and cut into small cubes • 15g fresh coriander, torn • 1 red onion, peeled and finely diced • 1 red chilli, finely diced • 2 tbsp coconut aminos METHOD

01 Put the chicken cubes in a bowl with the coconut milk and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 02 Meanwhile, make the mango salsa. Mix the avocado, mango, coriander, onion and chilli together in a bowl and pour over the coconut aminos. Refrigerate until needed. 03 Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4. 04 Put the flour and spices in a bowl and put the desiccated coconut on a plate. Take a chicken cube, roll it in the spiced flour, then roll it in the desiccated coconut until it is well coated, then put it on a baking tray. Repeat with the remaining chicken cubes. 05 Pour the melted coconut oil over the chicken and bake in the oven for 15 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through, golden brown and crispy. 06 To serve, put a spoonful of the mango salsa into each lettuce leaf, add a few chicken nuggets, fold in the sides of the lettuce to enclose it and eat like a sandwich. u

01 Soak the dates in a bowl of hot water for 20 minutes, then drain and put them into a blender with the coconut milk, coconut oil, salt and vanilla powder. Blend into a smooth paste, then transfer to a freezerproof container and freeze for 1 hour. 02 Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. 03 Roll a hazelnut in the caramel mixture until it’s coated – it’s messy and the balls won’t be a perfect shape but this doesn’t matter, just keep using teaspoons to handle the caramel. 04 Dust with a little coconut flour so the balls don’t stick together and put onto the lined baking tray. Repeat until all the mixture is used up, then put the tray into the freezer and freeze for 3 hours. 05 While the nuts are freezing, make the chocolate coating. Put all the ingredients for the coating in a pan and set over a low heat, stirring until melted. Remove from the heat and leave the mixture to cool a little until it is thick enough to drizzle over the caramel balls. 06 Pour the coating over the caramel balls, sprinkle a little salt over each, then pop back into the freezer for 30 minutes. u

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW It would have been TRULY fantastic had there been MORE of it

Market force Is this Paris or New York? No. This is The World's End Market and it's a strong new Chelsea presence Wo r d s E d w i n a L a n g l e y

D

iscretely positioned in the World’s End Distillery lies The World’s End Market. A cross between a French brasserie (think marine banquette seating and a fish counter) and a New York-style burger joint (low hanging lights, open kitchen, a meat display), The World’s End Market appeals to customers of both. Despite delightful manager Farukh informing my date ‘J’ and me that the fish menu was ‘limited’ that day, we actually found it to the contrary. Tartars and carpaccios filled the starter

menu, some of which were most mouthwatering – octopus carpaccio with olive oil and paprika – others, less so: smoked salmon carpaccio with horseradish and… truffle oil. Hmm. J went for carpaccio of scallop with preserved lemon salsa and harissa, the heat of which brought the subtle, sweet flavours of the mollusk to life. In fact, it would have been truly fantastic had there been more of it. Two small scallops (it may even have been just a largish one), thinly sliced, on a grand platter, looked slightly mean. Bread on the table might have helped bulk it out. I opted for the octopus,

63 CH_MAR15_Food_Review.indd 63

which arrived resplendently gleaming in a bath of olive oil. I loved it, because I could drink the stuff. There was a choice of fish, meat and a veggie option for the mains. We stuck with fish because, well, it seemed right and the fish counter had looked so colourful. I opted for the whole sea bass and J went for tuna. Both came with butter parsley sauce on the side, fries and a salad. My sea bass was exquisite; cooked to perfection, it slid off the bone and had skin so oily and crunchy, I picked at it with my fingers. Did it need a parsley sauce? I’d say not. J’s tuna, similarly, was the right side of rare – blushing, pink and juicy. While on principle I’d say it didn’t need its butter parsley sauce either (butter and parsley are bedfellows of cod, really, aren’t they?), J was adamant it worked. The chips were crisp and well-salted, but served with ketchup that wasn’t Heinz and sadly you could taste the difference. But that’s nitpicking. Both fish were skillfully cooked, and that was paramount. My pudding arrived in the form of a generous slice of carrot and orange cake, which while definitely more of an afternoon number, it was nonetheless everything a cake should be – soft, rich, substantial. J’s berry cheesecake came in a kitsch glass pot, revealing its wellbalanced cheese-and-fruit-to-biscuit ratio. All washed down with a bottle of house white and we left, two satisfied customers. The menu may need refining, but perhaps that’s the point: for tried and tested you go to your local, for something slightly different, you head to market. 

LUXURY

CRETAN MAGIC Discover the delights of Daios Cove, the jewel of Crete, from sea adventures to spa treatments Wo r d s C at h e r i n e H a l e s

eading to Crete for a summer holiday is pretty much a nobrainer. The beaches are idyllic, the food is exceptional and the season stretches well into October, making it perfect for those who can’t get away in July and August. Perhaps the only thing I hadn’t previously associated with a holiday in Crete was luxury. Daios Cove proved me wrong. I arrived to a glass of champagne in the hotel’s incredibly striking entrance, whose glass doors open onto an panoramic view of the sea and the whole resort. The hotel buildings are spread out over the whole of the man-made cove, with the main reception, bars, restaurants, pools (plural) and spa located in the airy, modern central building. Rooms, suites and villas (of which there are 300 in total) sprawl out over the hillsides on either side, ensuring breathtaking ocean views

for most. I was staying in a Deluxe Sea View Room with an individual pool that I had to restrain myself from jumping straight into as a member of staff showed me around. I would discover later that although beautifully situated, the pool was unheated and a little more bracing than I had imagined it would be – but was nonetheless perfect for dipping into when I overheated, sunbathing on my balcony. The room itself featured all the mod cons including a king size bed and cavernous bathroom all done up in a sophisticated, luxe style. On my first afternoon there, I alternated between basking, lizard-like, on my private deck and moseying down to the saltwater infinity pool in the hotel proper. At this point, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that, due to sheer size of Daios Cove, many of the rooms are a significant walk from the main building. As a result, the resort offers a service of electric buggies that come to your door, pick you up and deliver you to reception.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST We set out

BRIGHT AND EARLY on a CATAMARAN

to explore

On my first evening I dined in one of the hotel’s three restaurants, Taverna. The fare on offer there is traditional Greek cuisine and the à la carte menu did not disappoint, offering mainly fresh fish dishes. I started with tuna tartar, followed by paccheri pasta with lobster in a cherry tomato sauce. The ingredients were, without fail, incredibly fresh and flavoursome but it was the roasted sea bass fillet that really stole the show. By the time the cheesecake arrived I was barely able to take a bite and not even the lure of a cocktail could keep me from my enormous bed. Daios Cove offers a range of activities (as extras) to keep guests entertained and the next day a group of us set out bright

and early on a catamaran to explore Spinalonga Island, a nearby tourist spot. The journey itself was a real treat and as we laid out on the prow of the catamaran with the glittering azure sea rushing past, it was hard not to feel like glamorous extras in a music video. Tip: wear the highest SPF you can lay your hands on as the sunlight reflecting off both the water and the white boat will cook you like a lobster and the wind does a very good job of making you think it won’t. Spinalonga is a very small, very singular island that used to be part of the mainland until it was manually carved out of the coast in the 1500s and a fort built there to serve as a defence during the Venetian occupation.

In 1903, the island was repurposed as a leper colony and remained one until 1957, making it the last leper colony in Europe. When we arrived, the dock was clogged with large cruise ships and it was with a certain amount of smugness that we rocked up and were decanted with minimum fuss. The island itself is fascinating and incredibly well-preserved, giving a chilling insight into life during those 60 years and a walk all the way around takes roughly 45 minutes. After stopping to leap off the catamaran into the sea and to eat a delicious meal of sashimi and fruit, we were returned to the hotel for spa treatments and my 55-minute massage left me totally relaxed. My meal that evening was at Pangea, Daios Cove’s international buffet-style restaurant. Again, it was the seafood that emerged as the star of the show; I could have eaten

the sauteed calamari with marjoram pesto for every meal and the grilled octopus carpaccio was swoon-worthy. This particular dinner was served with lashings of local tipple raki, confirming in my mind that, no, I do not like raki. Despite the state-of-the art gym and incredible fitness classes offered by the hotel, my interest was instantly piqued by the watersports I had spied one afternoon from the beach, so the next day, instead of heading to a pilates class, I made my way down to the water in the amazing glass funicular that connects the different levels of the hotel. Within minutes I was clinging to an inflatable sofa being dragged behind a speedboat at great velocity, shrieking with laughter. After being dumped in the sea several times and informed that, ‘You are hardcore,’ by an incredibly tanned, blonde beach boy named Sven, I retired to the beach to catch a few last rays. Apart from the catamaran trip and an excursion to the nearby charming village of Kritsa, I stuck close to the hotel because, frankly, Daios Cove has everything you could want. u

THE SITE

I

n a sensitively-reclaimed old University building, the Hotel du Vin in Cambridge has managed to meld the comfort and decadence of a 21st century hotel with the old-world charm of this ancient city. One of Cambridge’s most central hotels, you feel the atmosphere of dusty libraries and lacrosse pitches, candlelit chapels and punting on the Cam all around you. Turn right out of the hotel and you’ll be at King’s College Chapel in under five minutes and at the trove of artistic delights that is the Fitzwilliam Museum in less than 3. The Hotel du Vin makes you feel like you are a part of the life of the city, however brief your stay. 

THE ROOM

W

e had a spacious room on the lower ground floor. There was plenty of space for two put-up beds for the children, and an enormous bathroom with walk-in monsoon shower and rolltop bath. The finishing touches were all present: luxurious bedding, robes and Miller Harris toiletries. It was also, despite its location, blissfully quiet. 

ess than an hour from London on the train, Cambridge is ideal for a short city break. We were blessed with winter sunshine on our visit, and the spires and turrets set against an azure sky were breathtaking. Cambridge is a walking city: we followed our noses up Trumpington Street, into the alleys of the University colleges, took our children on a whistlestop tour of the Fitzwilliam Museum, visited a choral service at Corpus Christi, and the next morning we were on the train back to London feeling a little bit smug at our parenting/city break skills. 

THE BAR & BISTRO

I

n the old cellars of the building the bar occupies every nook and cranny, with cosy sofas and candle-light abounding. We tried their Marmalade Martini which was truly delicious. Afterwards we dined at the Bistro which was buzzing with both local diners and guests. The fare is perfectly executed French bistro cuisine. The children ate moules frites and my husband a beautifully cooked steak. 

SPOTLIGHT

TRUE LUXE Unique, lavish interiors are integral to the luxury lifestyle. Designer Stephen Clasper knows how to create the ultimate in luxe living Wo r d s e v e h e r b e r t

S

tephen Clasper Interiors is a luxury interior design and bespoke furniture making practice with a difference. Unlike other interior design companies, Stephen Clasper delivers top class interior design and fine furniture as one practice. The company founded by Stephen Clasper in 1995, has a focus on ultra-high net worth clients in London, the Home Counties and worldwide and includes design and furniture for exceptional residential properties in the UK as well as luxury villas and yachts. Central to the excellence of Stephen Clasper Interiors is the way they work with clients to tailor the designs to their exact needs. Clients can depend on Stephen Clasper to manage the whole process, right from conception to completion. The process itself is a creative and rewarding time for the client due to the designers understanding of all their client’s needs. The holistic approach of the company to interiors, combined with their knowledge, passion and hard work means clients receive an unrivalled service in creating exceptional, elegant interiors. Stephen Clasper himself is the central force of the creative side of the business. Having studied at Chelsea

School of Art, he then travelled around the world for a number of years, visiting exotic places helping inspire his future designs. After travelling the world, Stephen began designing furniture and interiors specialising now in the high end residential market. Based up until recently in central London, a relocation to Surrey to expand the manufacturing capacity saw them getting involved with large new build projects in the Surrey

area. Now however their ambitions are focusing back on the London market where their work sits comfortably alongside the high end interiors that are so familiar in the best locations of central London. Stephen Clasper says: “I’ve always loved art, design and the process of creating something from nothing. I’m passionate about thinking differently and I like to surprise our clients with what’s

HOMES & INTERIORS / DESIGN CLIENTS will never SEE AN INTERIOR quite like theirs in ANY OTHER HOME possible to achieve with their properties. Above all I’m proud that thanks to our talented team, they will never see an interior quite like theirs in any other home. Every client is different, and we really get immersed in understanding their lifestyle. The interiors are just one part of the luxury lifestyle experience which we offer, enhancing both the home and the client’s day to day life. I always try to design projects using the very best materials available to us, from beautiful veneers, gorgeous fabrics, leathers, the products available to us are unlimited and contribute to the magic of high quality bespoke design. Of course budgets vary on every project but we will always look at all the options and engineer each project to suit the client. Bespoke furniture is essential to the final look of a project and is really what sets our practice apart from others in the industry. We have an unrivalled control of this element which

does not restrict our imagination.” Recent projects completed by Stephen Clasper Interiors include a house in Kensington (pictured) and a vast new build in Hertfordshire. The Kensington project delivered a touch of urban luxury with a unique style to the property, giving it a luxury feel. The addition of uniquely designed bespoke furniture to complement the many items sourced from high end suppliers has achieved an interior you will not see anywhere else. Notable features

81 CH_MARCH15_StephenClasper_3pg.indd 81

are included throughout the property and there is not one room that does not express this. For the Hertfordshire project, a living and entertaining space was central to the clients brief. Stephen Clasper used rich fabrics and wallpapers to give the entertaining rooms a sense of glamour. The focal point of the entertaining rooms was the hand crafted champagne bar. The bar incorporates chrome and mirror finishes and leather upholstery. As the economy continues to recover, 2015 is set to be a busy year for Stephen Clasper Interiors, with many exciting projects in the future. u ● Stephen Clasper Interiors +44 (0)1932 570 995 stephen@stephenclasper.co.uk stephenclasper.co.uk

any dream of getting out of the education arms race, but Tessa Lumley actually did. She shipped her family from London to Morayshire where her two girls now attend Gordonstoun. In a letter to the principal she wrote: “There was a moment when Alice was nine and I found myself standing at her school gates wondering if the world had gone mad. Parents were discussing tutors, what their children were and were not reading, what extra-curricular activities they did or should do. The London academic process allows only certain kinds of children to shine — the lucky few who are either highly intelligent or highly diligent or both. Anyone else is liable to fail in a system where they are competing with hundreds for tens of places.” Andrew Johnson, headmaster of Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, couldn’t agree more. “At somewhere like Winchester (where Johnson was head of modern

languages for ten years) a very bright tenyear-old boy might not feel very bright.” Gordonstoun has a 200-acre wooded campus; the school even has its own yacht and is famed for its unique outdoor education curriculum. Stonyhurst has a whopping 680-acre campus (St Pauls’ much-envied site by the Thames in contrast is a paltry 43 acres). Northern boarding schools are generally cheaper and likely to be more generous with scholarships and bursaries. Stonyhurst has an endowment that allows them to give away £2.3 million a year. Tessa Lumley finished her letter with this: “Most importantly, both Alice and Emily have flourished. They have grown and matured. They are being robustly and effectively educated — but they are also, crucially for me, being encouraged to be children: adventurous, inquisitive and occasionally intensely muddy. But, best of all, they are happy. Without happiness, surely it would be impossible for them to fulfill their full potential.” Makes you think, doesn’t it? u

85 CHIS_MARCH15_Education_v2.indd 85

I want my son to go to a top pre-prep in North London – should I get him tutored for the 4+ assessment?

o tutor, or not to tutor? That is the question! T Unfortunately as with most of parenting, there is no hard and fast rule. It is entirely dependent on the ability of your child, the amount of ‘educational play’ they have experienced – either with yourselves or someone with a native English, well-educated background and your child’s rate of development. Although some parents do see tutoring as an absolute from their child’s first words, I am keen to advocate a balanced approach. Pre-preps look at a child’s character and ability to interact with other children, as well as their ability to count up to 20, recognise colours and shapes and recite the alphabet. To develop a child’s character as well as mental ability it is key for them to combine this learning with fun, knocks and grazes. If you are concerned with your child’s progress during their early years by all means seek advice and do opt for some ‘educational play’ to help develop their senses, social ability and skill set. If however, you are keen to opt for a more stringent programme of formalised learning during the toddler years, I must leave this to your prerogative. I will say though that I would far rather see my two little boys laughing and learning through games and fun, than having bags under their eyes before they even reach the joys of 7+ assessments. u

ove him or hate him, Russell Brand's L exuberant language and expressive voice work brilliantly for children. Taking away the swearing, but keeping a measured amount of anger, this retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the first of a future series of Trickster Tales and it makes an entertaining – and highly moral – read. Chris Riddell's brilliantly spiky illustrations convey the terror of the rats and give the piper a Clockwork Orange-ish sartorial swagger. Sharp-eyed Sam is a lone goodie in this cast of vile, spoilt characters that make up a cautionary tale for today's child-centric families. ◆

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

W

hilst I was born in Hong Kong and have spent time living abroad, London has always been my home. I grew up in Richmond and after I graduated from Bristol, I first rented a flat in Fulham cutting my teeth at one of London's most ‘aggressive’ estate agencies in Notting Hill. Still highly regarded as one of the best industry training grounds, I spent three happy years there before a spell working in Sydney with my then girlfriend, now wife. Two years later I returned to W11 and inadvertently sold an A-list British singer/ songwriter her first ever flat. She claimed her recording studio was just down the road; I still maintain she wasn't recognisably famous then but I must admit I hadn't a clue who she was until she signed, paid in cash for a one bedroom first floor flat on Kensington Park Road, on the corner of Elgin Crescent. My colleagues were completely dumbfounded I didn't know who she was. Even my mum knew of her! Since my brief dalliance with the music industry, Chelsea, South Kensington and Earls Court has been my area of expertise and I personally focus on properties, generally flats in these areas, up to the value of £2m. Transaction volume is invariably higher in this price range and I thrive on the faster pace of activity. Our clients here are an even mix of domiciled continental Europeans – mainly Italians, French, German and Spanish as well as domestic Brits; a discerning mix, from investment bankers to young entrepreneurial types. Dealing with different types of people

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

ITOW.indd 104

gives variety to the job. Our purchasers are a varied mix too; first and second time buyers, wealthy parents buying for their children, foreign investors and others looking for a London pied à terre. Their common motivation is the confidence that their piece of prime central London real estate is likely to provide them with a sound investment, especially in the medium to long term. Having worked this area for several years, it's rewarding when previous buyers of mine re-engage as clients to make their next move - invariably achieving substantially in excess of what they paid previously. I have always enjoyed my job. I think being an estate agent is more about people and relationships than it is about property and sales. I prefer spending my day on the move, meeting people rather than being tied to a desk for 11 hours. Having worked for both the bigger corporates as well as the smaller independents, Strutt & Parker have, uniquely, a core of 10 offices in Central London as well as 50 offices nationally, so it offers something different. Surprisingly there is more opportunity for creativity and forwardthinking when you are part of a larger firm with such a strong, recognisable brand. I am surrounded by industry experts who have a real passion for what they do. SW10 has plenty to offer, which is why it’s so popular. It is not surprising, then, that my supremely successful musical acquaintance has upgraded to a big house in the nearby area. So now I had better get back to finding a property for Someone Like You.

no impact on the rent achieved. Indeed, it is widely accepted that this is the case, and even some limited research online will prove this. It is curious, then, that landlords should continue to pay for such facilities given the impact of these costs against their return. In the cases I examined the service charge alone represented between 10-15% of the annual rental yield, which at 3% in some areas is not particularly generous in the first place. With sold prices and

mortgage rates as they are, it is already far cheaper to rent than to buy. With more new build stock coming online over the next few years, many with increasingly lavish facilities, how long will it be before both the professional landlord and speculative investor start to question why they should continue to pay for the provision of luxury services when the services themselves do not provide the luxury of increased rental income?
