LETTER
M
ark Twain, surely literature’s most quotable figure, famously told us to ‘throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in our sails.’ To ‘explore. Dream. Discover.’ That was all well and good for Mr Twain, but the fantasy of escaping the rat-race, of buying a one-way ticket to the middle of nowhere and truly sailing away from our safe harbours is somewhat hindered by jobs, mortgages, children and by life in general. Travel is, however, one of life’s greatest pleasures. Not a luxury in my eyes, (though this being Absolutely we have of course uncovered the crème de la crème of the travel industry for your viewing pleasure) but a necessity. A getaway, no matter how short, is a chance to escape everyday monotony and experience a new culture, cuisine, experiences and way of life. Our travel special this month focuses on three of the Caribbean’s most spectacular islands, as well as an exclusive first-hand look at the gorgeous colonial style St Regis resort in Mauritius.

Arts & Culture
Help the Aged The Independent’s perennial agony aunt, Virginia Ironside, on granny stand-up and growing old disgracefully
but all the time I was writing a book. I eventually wrote a piece for a magazine which was edited, oddly enough, by Michael Parkinson, who was the features editor. A publisher wrote to me and said had I ever thought of writing a book and I said ‘well, yes actually I’ve got one in my drawer!’ I sent it to him and they published it. It was a very different time back then. I was 22, we were a lucky generation though I hate to say it!
What inspired the books in particular? I think what inspired them was people being so terribly downhearted about getting old. I actually found getting old quite different; I found it to be a release. I was never very happy when I was young, and I find the older I get the happier I get. I like the fact that there are fewer choices. Life used to stretch out with this sort of hideous, endless opportunities, which was quite daunting, whereas now you know where you are. I find it impossible not to look on the bright side as one gets older because life is so much less ghastly than it used to be! Do you think that Britain has an intolerant attitude towards its elderly? I think the baby boomers are changing all this actually because I’ve noticed a lot more celebration of getting old. I think there’s a change in attitude towards the old. I’m not talking about the very old because obviously there’s a moment when things start to get really bad, but there’s a new age now, between 60 and 80, which has the potential to be – instead of a downward slide – a new country to visit; an exciting new area. How has your writing style changed over the years? I don’t think my writing style has changed at all, I’m just more confident now and I find
it easier. I’ve written so much in my time and one of the things that really helped was being a television reviewer in the 60s. You had to watch a programme on TV which ended at 10:30 and your copy deadline was 10:30 – so you had to write terribly quickly. That was very good training. Do you write every day? Oh no, I write when I feel like it! Or when there’s a deadline. I live a very nice life at the moment, it’s just the same sort of life every day; a bit of writing, a bit of pottering about. It’s a very nice and natural way of living. Who are some of your favourite authors? I love Elizabeth Taylor, not the actress, obviously. She writes beautifully about family life. Nabokov and Chekhov are also my favourites. You’re from a creative background (painter and coin designer father, Christopher Ironside, and first ever professor of Fashion Design at RCA mother, Janey Acheson), did you always want to write? No not all, I tried all kinds of different things. I went to art school, I was a temporary secretary,
How did the Growing Old Disgracefully show come about? I was asked to do a lot of literary festivals after No! I Don’t Want to Join a Book Club, and I found that when I did them Club I would be able to make people laugh. I enjoyed it very much too. I was on a cruise doing a talk and Nigel Planer happened to be there. I asked if he knew anyone who might be able to direct or produce me because I wanted to take it to Edinburgh. He saw me doing it and afterwards he said he’d love to direct me, which gave me such a confidence boost. We took it to Edinburgh in 2009 and I’ve never looked back. The show is a sort of granny stand-up but it’s more of an eccentric one woman show. It’s got jokes in it but there’s also some seriousness and sentimentality. How long have you been an agony aunt for The Independent? 2013 is my 20th year. I feel pretty confident about giving advice now, it doesn’t seem like a huge puzzle to me. When I’m offered a problem I can just see a solution. What are the most common types of problems people write in about? Either, ‘I’m so lonely and miserable because I’m married and my husband doesn’t understand me’, or, ‘I’m so lonely and miserable because I’m not married’. It’s depression and loneliness, as it’s always been. There’s no change I’m afraid. No! I don’t Need Reading Glasses! Published by Quercus, £16.99 is out now, virginiaironside.org
PHOTO ©CATHERINE SHAKESPEARE LANE
Can you tell us a little about No! I Don’t Need Reading Glasses, the follow up to No! I Don’t Want to Join a Bookclub? How autobiographical is the character of Marie Sharp? All books, I think, have a lot of oneself in them. Originally this was about a 60-year-old somebody who lived in Shepherd’s Bush and who had just become a granny – which is me – but she’s a retired art teacher, which isn’t me and she’d had a very different life. It’s easy to set it in Shepherd’s Bush because I know the world around here. One writes a book about what one knows.

Just Retirement presents:
British & Irish vs. French Rugby Legends Witness some of the world’s most legendary rugby players come together for an epic match
I
n the sporting world, there are few rivalries more personal, more passionate, than the one that runs between the British, the Irish and the French. And now Just Retirement is bringing some of the most iconic players in the history of these great rugby-playing nations together for a unique encounter. It’s the first time a British and Irish side has played France since the 1960s. It’s the first ever Legends Match against France. And it’s all in the name of charity.
The Match
On Friday, 22nd February 2013, Martin Corry’s British and Irish Legends team will be taking on Serge Betsen’s Frenchmen at the home of Harlequins – The Stoop, Twickenham. Kick off is 7.45pm. Coming just 24 hours before England face off against France in the RBS Six Nations, this clash is sure to set the tone for the latest chapter in the Anglo-French rivalry.
The Teams
The British and Irish Legends will be captained by former England talisman Martin Corry. The team will also feature England’s most-capped player, Jason Leonard, World Cup winners Josh Lewsey and Ben Cohen, former Irish international Shane Byrne and other huge names. The French team, led by the mighty flanker Serge Betsen, will be calling on some of France’s most celebrated Rugby stars, including; former French mainstay Christian Califano, Franck Tournaire and many more.
The Charities
The British and Irish Legends are playing for Wooden Spoon, which is dedicated using the spirit and values of rugby to help disadvantaged young people. The French side, meanwhile, is playing for the Serge Betsen Academy, which was set up in 2004 to provide the children of Cameroon with schooling and medical help, as well as a new charity that’s being set up by Provale to help professional and amateur rugby players deal with life-threatening injuries. This event is being organised by Just Retirement – the UK’s largest provider of enhanced annuities, and one of the leading providers of equity release lifetime mortgages – who are championing the idea of Legends; people who make a positive contribution to everyday life. And in bringing together these legendary rugby players for one more match,
it’s safe to say that they’ve done just that. Don’t miss your chance to witness this clash with some of the game’s greatest players. Tickets start at just £10, with children and other concessions priced at £5. Buy yours today at www.quins.co.uk or by calling 0871 527 1315. Weekend For The
Nobody does luxury travel with a sense of humour quite like Mr & Mrs Smith. Gemma Billington catches up with founders James and Tamara Lohan to uncover the secrets behind their success
Royal Malewane, South Africa 28
Lead interview_v2.indd 28

I
’m sat in a cosy booth at Sam’s Brasserie, trying to preserve an air of nonchalance as I mentally prepare to unmask the famous Mr and Mrs Smith; AKA James and Tamara Lohan, the husbandand-wife duo behind the boutique travel guide publisher-cum-agency. They are, however, instantly recognisable when they arrive – fashionably ten minutes late – apologising profusely and with handshakes of steel. If you’re familiar with the Mr & Mrs Smith brand, or are in possession of one of their three exclusive membership cards, then you will be accustomed to the company’s sense of humour and irreverence; evident in their tongue-in-cheek name. I ask for the story behind the brand; ‘it was my fault’ James begins, semi-apologetically, ‘we were dating back then (2003) and I wanted to take Tamara away on weekends and was failing miserably because of some nameless guidebooks. I kept getting it wrong.’ He regales the story of a particularly naff hotel in the Lake District, a tale which he has clearly told on numerous occasions, yet still retains a feverous disdain at the memory. The unfortunate hotel ticked many a recurring Fawlty Towers list of problems; decrepit decor, stained carpets, poor bedding and a musty odour.
Spurred on by the bad experience, James and Tamara took it upon themselves to seek out the great British hotels that were surely out there. ‘Guidebooks back then gave a list of restaurants in the area but not where the best place for Sunday lunch was, the best for a romantic meal, what the best table in the restaurant was... it was just basic stuff. So we decided to write it ourselves.’ After initially being turned down by several publishers, the Lohans eventually managed to sell their concept, and the book was an instant hit. Originally just a publishing business, the Mr & Mrs Smith ‘travel club model’ launched online in September 2005 and their scope grew into Europe, Asia and the rest of the world. ‘It didn’t feel like rocket science and I was gobsmacked that other people weren’t doing it,’ James admits. With absolutely zero experience in the travel industry (‘we were qualified consumers, rather than experts’, James concedes), the Lohan’s business took off spectacularly and they now operate a 24/6 travel team, with offices in Melbourne and New York. Indeed, I can’t help but feel that the company’s success was a case of right place, right time – given how rapidly the travel

MR & MRS SMITH RECOMMEND: FAVOURITE HOTELS:
Coworth Park near Ascot, Berkshire – the only polo ground in the UK with a boutique hotel. Amazing grounds, spa and food. coworthpark.com Upper House in Hong Kong – service like we have never experienced. Stunning city views from the bedrooms and a buzzing restaurant. upperhouse.com Crosby Street Hotel in New York. Kit Kemp styling in our favourite city. Also, an amazing position for shopping. Styling and quality is stunning in this hotel. crosbystreethotel.com industry has grown and changed. The Mr & Mrs Smith concept isn’t exactly ground breaking, yet at the time it was truly pioneering. I ask how the industry has changed since the birth of Mr & Mrs Smith, in what is a comparatively short space of time. ‘The boutique hotel industry has just grown massively.’ James says, ‘ten years ago it felt like you were a guest at a hotel rather than the other way round.’ The Mr & Mrs Smith guidelines for potential listed hotels is particularly strict, and if one doesn’t quite cut the mustard, it will never appear in one of their guidebooks or on their website, and no one can buy their way in (yes, there have been numerous attempts). Therefore, every hotel listed is handpicked and guaranteed to be the cream of the crop. In recent years, we’ve become masters of self published reviews and prior research of any kind of accommodation is a prerequisite. How has this unbiased feedback culture, trailblazed by the likes of Trip Advisor, affected the hotel industry? ‘Hoteliers have to be more careful,’ James agrees, ‘but it’s also given them a platform to respond to complaints. They have an avenue to reply and turn the customer around.’ It is somewhat fitting that Mr & Mrs Smith always send couples away to submit reviews, and though all are anonymous, a number of celebrity reviewers have done the dirty work (it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it). ‘We don’t just send some boring hotel inspector.’ James says. ‘We’ve had great people like Felix from Basement Jaxx, Raymond Blanc... a real mix. The way we review hotels is we don’t care about diamonds and rosettes and plates
on the wall, it’s just got to have some thought to it and we’re looking for that ‘wow’ factor.’ For a couple who have been stalwarts in the travel industry for a decade, the Lohans still retain an infectious and palpable enthusiasm for their job. Their palettes have undoubtedly been widened through their extensive research and experiences, but they still attain a sense of excitement for the new and unique. 2013 marks the start of a new venture for the company with the launch of Smith & Family, which will run alongside yet remain a separate entity to Mr & Mrs Smith. In a way, the Lohan’s client base has grown with them; from young couples looking for idyllic weekend breaks to family units with entirely different priorities. The couple are excited by the launch and acknowledge that the business required such a service, whilst maintaining the adults only merriment of Mr & Mrs Smith. The Lohans have lived and worked in Chiswick for around eight years. Originally based in a houseboat in Corney Reach, they had to switch to a more conventional abode after having children. Having initially moved to the area because of its close proximity to Heathrow Airport, the Lohans have made Chiswick their home as well as their place of business. To turn a hobby or passion into a business is no mean feat, but the Lohans have pulled it off with aplomb. Mr & Mrs Smith is a fun yet respected travel club for grown-ups, and to be part of that world is an everyday little slice of indulgence that we all need. mrandmrssmith.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Feeling Good
Fry 1 chopped onion for 5 minutes, then add 1 finely chopped garlic clove, 3 finely chopped sticks of celery and 2 pints of vegetable stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Add in the diced celeriac (use about 1/3 of a celeriac) and boil for 5 more minutes. Add 1 diced cauliflower and boil for 3 minutes. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add in a pinch of grated nutmeg and half a tsp of tarragon, then take off the heat and whizz in a blender. For the fish cakes, cook some brown rice for 25 minutes. You want it to be slightly over cooked so it is stickier! Drain and leave to cool. In a bowl mix 1 tsp of lemon zest, 1 tsp chopped parsley, 1 tsp of fresh thyme and 1 fillet of pollock or cod (shred it with your hands). Mix in the cooled rice and massage it together so it clumps. Form little flattened balls, place on a lightly oiled baking tray and cook in the oven for 12 minutes turning once. Season and serve with an edible flower. thedetoxkitchen.com

HAIRLESS AND CARELESS
Laser hair removal has taken the beauty world by storm and has made waxing and shaving seem somewhat passé. Spanish company Centros Unico opened their doors just over four years ago and their success has seen them grow to over 80 centres in the UK and Brazil. As specialists in laser hair removal, they recommend the Lightsheer Duet Diode laser, which is the most sophisticated piece of equipment on the market. With effective results after just one session, and an affordable price tag, it’s the perfect excuse to end the winter leg hibernation. 8 Oak Road, Ealing Broadway Centre, W5; centrosunico.com

P
rimary school teacher Jane Dowrick wanted to look her best for her son’s wedding. Being a keen dancer, she was looking forward to stepping out onto the dance floor. But she faced a problem. As Jane explains, “I can’t wear high heels for very long because I suffer from back and hip pain. To make matters worse I also have a bunion.” But she was determined to have a good time, so decided to splash out on a new outfit for the day and a cocktail dress for the evening. However, she was still unsure what shoes she
could wear for style and comfort. “I decided to visit Foot Solutions – and I’m so glad I did!” adds Jane. “I spent an hour with their staff undergoing tests and scans to monitor how I walked and pinpoint any problems. To my surprise they had a great range of fashionable heels. I chose a gold pair of Ziera shoes which were perfect. These together with the special insoles prescribed and supplied by Foot Solutions meant I was ready to dance the night away. The staff at Foot Solutions were so helpful and professional” says Jane. “It was a genuinely lovely experience.” Contact the Richmond store on : 020 8940 1814 to arrange a FREE foot analysis. 4 Red Lion Street, Richmond, TW19 1RW footsolutions.com/richmond-surrey

S
itting over a cup of tea with Nina Moeller is quite an inspiring experience, though it serves as a stark reminder of how little I do with my free time in London. Within 10 minutes she’s listed countless exhibitions and shows she’s recently attended; ‘I think Thomas Heatherwick impressed everyone over last summer,’ she muses, to which I wholeheartedly agree, though – of course – I missed his retrospective. ‘London is a great place for creativity and eccentricity’ she concludes, which for a woman with such a varied cultural background, is quite a compliment. Born in South Africa, Nina studied cabinet design in Germany, where she was based for nine years, and went on to study furniture restoration in Poland and Normandy before settling in London; studying under the renowned and whimsically named furniture maker John Makepeace. We discuss the emergence of talent from her homeland and she acknowledges the ‘wealth of up-and-coming designers’, but it is London (she lives in Brook Green and works in a studio in Richmond) that she now calls home. A skilled and experienced furniture maker by trade, Nina established her business, Nina Moeller Designs, some 20 years ago and has worked on private projects and with prestigious clients such as The Conran Shop and The Ivy. Though getting her hands dirty and making furniture has had to take a back seat for Nina since establishing her business, her passion for what she does is immediately obvious and is somewhat infectious. I initially assume that she has a fixed, specific style, but she admits to being relaxed when it comes to personal taste. ‘I’m quite open’ she says, ‘I think you can mix and match styles, which is what I’m interested in.’ In such an industry, however, Nina will always be directed by the client to some degree when it comes to her
modern design choices in what is, after all, an elegant family home, but the Richmond house’s beauty lies in Nina’s characteristic attention to detail. One such example derives from the family’s personal collection of bamboo in their garden, which Nina felt inspired by to incorporate directly into the home; using bamboo as a simple handle detail in the bathroom. I’ve finished my tea and am packing up my things, but we’re still talking about inspirations; the Moorish beauty of Granada, Raphael’s sketches and the inimitable beauty of Rome. Nina talks of the Italian garden at the V&A and suddenly we’re back to where we started. It’s this diligent drive and passion for creativity that make Nina so easy to talk to and is, I imagine, what gives her a natural rapport with clients. I leave with a resolution; to explore more of the architectural and cultural highlights of London. It is, after all, right under my nose. nina-moeller-designs.co.uk
professional endeavours. One such example of Nina’s flair and perception is a beautiful three-storey Victorian house in Richmond. The clients; a couple and their five children, originally sought Nina’s advice on an (Italian furniture company) Edra sofa. They liked her ideas so much that, together with an architect, she took on the rest of the house. Nina’s style combines a clean, minimal approach with a respect for the traditional nature of the building. It also no doubt helped that the clients in this particular case had such good taste in art. The sympathetic conversion of period properties is Nina’s forté, and she is renowned for her ability to blend period exterior with a contemporary interior. There are no ostentatious or overly 41

THE SECRET GARDEN
Kate Gould takes us through the secrets of a small Chiswick courtyard garden. ‘Approximately 4x5m in size, this garden is viewed directly from the kitchen of the recently renovated house. The space incorporated soft colours and a traditional feel. Painted fences and trellis create the sense of a room and this colour is picked up again in the Versailles planters which are planted with ¾ standard Laurus nobilis (Bay trees) and under planted with annuals seasonally for colour.’ kategouldgardens.com
WILD AT HEART
The One Show’s Mike Dilger has been on a mission: to visit all nine Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust Centres across the UK to raise money for the spoon-billed sandpiper conservation breeding programme. On 2 February, he will be in our neck of the woods for an evening of birdbrained conversation with his talk, ‘The Trials and Tribulations of a TV Naturalist’; an informative and witty insight into the world of wildlife presenting. £15, 2 February at 6pm; wwt.org.uk
‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we surround ourselves with attractive things not only because they look nice but also because they make us feel happy. A bespoke handcrafted sculpture or hand thrown pot can be pricey, but with that price tag comes years of enjoyment and the knowledge that something has been made just for you. On the other end of the scale, however, sometimes a piece of wood, a beautiful specimen plant or a decorative boulder can also provide the same effect without such a hefty price tag.’ kategouldgardens.com 43

F
rom the outside there is little to suggest that Grove House is anything other than a rather handsome early 18thcentury house typical of its period, with facings of dark plum brick, flush-framed sash windows and a later early 19th- century porch. The house was built for Lady Mary Downing. It retains a good original timber staircase with twisted balusters, but the pièce de résistance was added much later in 1893, when the house was acquired by a retired army officer, Colonel Charles James Stutfield, who had served in the Mediterranean. He let his imagination run riot by extending
the house with a spectacular music room in a full-blown evocation of the Alhambra inspired by Owen Jones’s Alhambra Room at the Sydenham Crystal Palace. Tucked away at the back of the house, it was intended to form part of a wider composition including a long-lost conservatory with a circular pond and canal based on the Court of Lions at the Alhambra. Inside, the central space and lateral bays are divided by cusped, engrailed arches and pierced screens above which rises a dome decorated with interlaced patterns on embossed paper, and receding muqarnas, the small carved corbels stacked in tiers which are such a distinctive hallmark

Stutfield died in 1926, at which point the house was sold. Plans to demolish the building for housing were resisted in 1950, and again in 1966, after which it was converted to offices. River
Deep Ruth Rogers blazed the ‘peasant food’ trail when she opened the stormingly successful River Café some 25 years ago. Katy Jarratt meets a passionately hands-on chef
W
aiting to speak to Ruth Rogers at The River Cafe, I reach a level of sensory contentment I didn’t know was possible. ‘Go mad,’ says her delightful restaurant manager, placing a menu before me and running through the list of possibilities with the kind of fondness and excitement you’d expect from someone telling you about each of their children in birth order. The Thames laps on the river bank outside and the cafe gives off the gentle hum of late lunchtime conversation. Everyone, including the receptionist, is giving a personal and detailed wine or food recommendation to an enquiring customer over the phone. This is the life. Out of pure greed I choose a pudding. It’s a vanilla pod-speckled pannacotta with grappa and rhubarb. It comes in a smooth dome, layered with columns of the freshest rhubarb I’ve ever tasted. It’s phenomenal, but don’t expect it to be exactly the same when you go. The River Cafe changes menu twice daily based on what is available and Rogers is held up writing the second menu of the day in the far corner of the cafe. ‘We just talk about food all day,’ says Ruth’s assistant Jess, who is checking on me occasionally with a seamlessly intuitive balance of attention and space. We politely laugh but she holds my gaze and I understand that she must really mean it. We have reached the realm of the serious food fanatics. Rogers walks over, smiling. ‘Have you eaten?’ She asks. I’m tempted to say no but I tell her I’ve had the pannacotta and I’m stuffed. ‘Ah,’ she exclaims, remembering it from the morning’s menu. ‘I didn’t write it myself, Danny did,’ she says, but she knows it back to front. I can see that the menu for
her is like a seasonal newsfeed, the living, breathing current affairs of the food world. Is writing it a creative process? ‘Oh yes,’ she says, ‘it’s constantly running through my head and there is a lot of creative pressure. But there are structures within it too, like any creation.’ Rogers sees the menu as a theatrical performance each night, with the food items as cast members appearing in different guises - grilled, cooked, fried, hot, cold. ‘I’ll usually always have mozzarella and prosciutto and squid on the menu. Then three fish and three meat,’ she adds. ‘Mondays are difficult for the squid,’ she says, as if she’s trying not to take it personally, ‘but we get by. We’ve had scallops on the menu almost every day, but in the back of
‘Success is an internal feeling, isn’t it?’ she asks, rhetorically. ‘It’s how I can look at the restaurant and just know that we run a very different, tight, ship’ my mind I know the lobster is going to be less available so I’ll combine that with other fish to make a fish stew.’ She is Goldie Hawn-esque and has the manner and look of a Woody Allen heroine but seems to have lost some of the harder New York edges. She and Rose Gray founded The River Cafe in 1987, specialising in fresh, seasonal Italian cuisine and gained their first Michelin star in 1997. They are well known for having launched the careers of famous chefs like Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and for indirectly defining a new genre of food – what the papers coined ‘peasant chic.’ As with any iconic commercial venture, it’s

had its fair share of ups and downs. After a fire in 2007 it closed for seven months and - perhaps, worst of all - the death of Gray from cancer in 2010 left Rogers and the team bereft. ‘I feel like a single parent,’ she says. ‘Since Rose’s death I’ve tried to focus a lot on the things we shared. The restaurant, the values, our families...’ This seems to be the only way she can come to terms with it. Rogers’ role is relentlessly hands-on, with six shifts a week. Even while Gray was there, the two of them worked side-by-side, day in, day out for two decades. Rogers was born in upstate New York, the daughter of a doctor and a librarian. She travelled to England for university and, in her words, ‘never went back.’ ‘I was so excited to be in England, I met my husband very quickly and after three years we were married.’ Her husband is Lord Rogers, the modernist architect who has been responsible for some of the most interesting buildings in the world. She is, technically, Lady Rogers, but - like a true liberal she is not concerned with how you address her. ‘When Richard and I were first together we travelled to France because he won the contract for the Pompidou Centre. I was always cooking anyway, but when we were in Paris and we lived above a market – that was when I was the most influenced.’ Going to the market every day and deciding what to cook for dinner gave Rogers her sourcing epiphany. Little did she know she was ahead of the times and would spend the rest of her life bringing that concept to fruition and inducing a whole trend of food sustainability. Whatever the impact of this amazing feat, her advice is simple. ‘Never...’ she says, pausing with emphasis, ‘...go to the market with a shopping list in your head.’ Despite decades of experience as a restaurateur, a Michelin star and an MBE under her belt, Rogers defines herself first and foremost as a chef. ‘To be a good chef you need three things,’ she begins. She has obviously thought about this a lot and her New York twang returns. ‘One: you have to
up to 300 people walk through the door each day, that’s a lot of hard work. The staff are also quietly protective of Rogers, or ‘Ruthie’ as they call her. But that is not surprising considering the restaurant is her second home and she is now running it single-handedly. River Cafe has been going so long and done so well, how does she even define success anymore? ‘Success is an internal feeling, isn’t it?’ she asks, rhetorically. ‘It’s how I can look at the restaurant and just know that we run a very different, tight, ship. One measure of success is the number of people who eat here, the margins we create, the reviews that we have. Personally for me, the measure of success is when people come back over and over again. That for me is success. When my children eat here and they’re happy. When my husband Richard eats here every day. Combining family, home and my work is success.’ It’s early evening and the sun is setting on this morning’s menu. What have been her highlights so far today? ‘If I had eaten here I’d have had the Dover sole and broad bean salad. Then gelati for afterwards, then... What’s this?’ she says, noticing something on the menu like a director picking out a rogue member of the chorus line. ‘The pear and grappa sorbet – I need to taste that.’ I feel vague excitement in my stomach in anticipation of raising my blood sugar even higher. ‘You want some?’ she asks, but I suspect the look on my face gives it away. She shouts across the restaurant like a Jewish mother: ‘Danny! Hey, Danny! Danny! What’s this on the menu? Come over here and meet this nice lady and bring us some sorbet and cwoffee.’ You can take the girl out of New York...
She is Goldie Hawn-esque with the manner and look of a Woody Allen heroine be really passionate about your job. If you don’t love it, it’s going to be a problem. Two: you must be able to work in a team. The days of the shouting chef are over – nobody does that anymore. Three: you need qualities like curiosity, energy, ambition and taste. They are not common.’ Considering that her passion for Italian food is so strong, I wonder aloud if she ever attempts to make other types? ‘I don’t have time to become an expert, but when I do go out I love ethnic food. Bibendum Oyster Bar for Saturday lunch, I adore finding little Lebanese places, then Star of India and Zuma for Japanese is divine.” Looking around the restaurant, the staff are extremely engaged in their work. They’ve got tables to erect, people to look after, food to talk about. Nobody is bored. ‘It differs, but on an average day I’ll have nine chefs on, two managers, nine waiters on the floor, two receptionists, four bar staff and two waiters in the pipe room.” For a restaurant that has

Treasure Island Helen Baron visits Jade Mountain, where romance and relaxation reach luxurious new heights
Architecture
Jade Mountain is a structural marvel. The brainchild of architect and owner Nick Troubetzkoy, the resort is a triumphant achievement of singular depth, vision and beauty, incorporating the most extensive use of the ‘vanishing edge’ water feature not just in a hotel setting, but anywhere in the world. Housed within a strikingly unusual complex set high in the luscious St. Lucian hills, Jade Mountain overlooks its sister resort, Anse Chastenet, and its stunning combination of organic architecture and breathtaking natural surroundings make it one of (if not the) most romantic destinations on earth. The key to Jade Mountain’s architectural splendour is harmony. With 25 luxury suites (or sanctuaries, as they’re known on-site) on six mountainside levels, another developer might have overwhelmed the teeming tropical rainforest on the hotel’s doorstep. Not Troubetzkoy, who has fashioned a haven that reposes so elegantly within its natural environment, you’d be forgiven for thinking it had always been there.
Twenty of the sanctuaries contain their own infinity pool (discreetly connected by a brilliantly conceived system of channels, basins and troughs) – though ‘contain’ is perhaps the wrong word when each room lacks a fourth wall. The rooms are open to the dazzling blue St Lucian skies, the endless Caribbean Sea and the glittering green rainforest below. It’s a jawdroppingly luxurious feature and an achingly romantic one: imagine waking each day to the warm tropical air and panoramic views of the volcanic Piton peaks rising high above the bay. Tiny, colourful rainforest birds dart into your room, and you can sunbathe unseen on your terrace, comfortable in the knowledge that your personal pool is mere inches away. What’s more, each sanctuary is reached by its own bridge – so the sense of privacy is amazingly complete. The overall impression of the place is of a deliriously upscale Tracey Island, or something from a sixties Bond film, albeit without all that deathdefying adventure. Jade Mountain is a place to escape all stress and feel at one with the world at its most beautiful, and every aspect of its design renders resistance futile. 55
Travel St Lucia.indd 55
14/01/2013 18:24
Rooms
The rooms are a tasteful tribute to Caribbean island life, with all materials sustainably sourced from local islands – including sand and gravel, rose-grey tinted stone and a plethora of gorgeous tropical hardwoods and coral tiles. The pool tiles are made from recycled glass and each room boasts its own unique variety. In addition, there are no televisions, no stereo systems, no electronic ‘distractions’ to tear you from the natural wonder all around. Okay, a wi-fi network is available for those who really need to check their email, but even the bathrooms are designed to maximise your interactions with the hotel’s spectacular setting, with rainfall showers and chromatherapy spa baths perched above the living and sleeping areas, affording you some of the world’s most magical views as you soak.
Service
The staff at Jade Mountain breathe new life into the well-worn idea of ‘service with a smile’. From the team of butlers to cycling instructor Tyson, every member of staff we encountered seemed genuinely proud of the resort, and more than willing to help make our holiday as perfect as possible. Even better, there was over-the-top formality; the atmosphere was as relaxed and convivial as the service was incredible. Special mention must go to assistant manager Peter Jean-Paul, whose care and enthusiasm ensured our stay was never less than sublime. What this means for couples is that Jade Mountain takes care of all the little details, allowing you to concentrate on each other. Each evening while you dine at one of the resort’s several restaurants, the candles dotted around your room are lit and the bed turned down. You re-enter your sanctuary to find the sun-drenched daytime refuge transformed into an intimate tropical hideaway. Down below, the sea rushes in and recedes, lulling you to sleep - only for you to wake and experience everything afresh. 56

Resort
Below Jade Mountain sits the 600 acre beachfront resort of Anse Chastenet, itself a world-renowned destination. Nestled in an exquisite hillside spot on St Lucia’s west coast, the resort consists of a scattering of French colonial-style bungalows set along the sandy beach. Guests at Jade Mountain can take advantage of all the facilities of Anse Chastenet, from its restaurants and scuba school to its exceptional snorkelling and watersports. We were lucky enough to enjoy the resort’s star attraction during our stay – a private sunset cruise (complete with tropical canapés and champagne) aboard the beautiful sailing yacht Serenity. And while there is plenty of amazing stuff to experience at Jade Mountain and Anse Chastenet – from whale-watching and guided history hikes to town trips and rainforest biking – nothing beats a tranquil hour or two spent gazing across the ocean as the Caribbean sun bids the world goodnight. By the time our cheery captain and his first mate had returned us to the resort, the lights were twinkling all over the mountain. We trod a slow, happy path across the sand, wondering at how easy the staff made it all seem; shaving off the rough edges of life, choreographing our trip so that we had no time to worry about anything. It’s all about learning to let go by embracing life, a delicious paradox that makes a stay at Jade Mountain as memorable as it is romantic – and which ensures the glow remains for a long time after you return home.
Price tag
Nightly rates at Jade Mountain start at US$ 1,275 per Sanctuary. Price is based on two persons sharing a Sky, Star, Moon, Sun or Galaxy Jacuzzi Suite. Anyone for tennis? Gemma Billington brushes up on her backhand in the Antiguan sunshine
T
he small West Indies island of Antigua is an intoxicating kind of beauty. From the moment you step into the stifling heat of its tiny airport and are taken through the lusciously green landscape dotted with a mass of rugged houses of bright, tropical colours, the Caribbean ambiance takes over. Exotic birds, goats, cows and stray dogs dart precariously across the road and curious eyes of fresh fruit street vendors (at the time of my visit there were actually more ripe mangos freshly available than could be harnessed and sold) peer through the car window. Curtain Bluff, situated on the southern coast of the island in St John’s, is a landmark resort not just for its renown and unwavering popularity, but also through its integral status in the community. And the timing of my visit couldn’t have been more poignant, during the hotel’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2012. Curtain Bluff (named in homage to the ‘bluff ’ landscape on which the resort is built and the curtain shape of the waves that
crash against it) was constructed by pilot Sir Howard Hulford – a grand looking gentleman with colonel style moustache – after he spotted the rugged site from the air in 1962. At this time the local area, Old Road, was a poor and isolated fishing village. Though Howard died five years ago, he is spoken of both fondly and regularly, and his presence is widely felt across the resort. His vivacious widow, Chelle, is a common sight around the hotel on her golf
signed myself up for. The illustrious sporting event initially began life as a professional island-wide tournament in 1975, but now draws a regular crowd of international enthusiasts and some of the biggest names in the sport. Organised by multiple Grand Slam winner Fred Stolle, the week is a mixture of friendly tournaments and tennis clinics and is a unique opportunity for tennis buffs and amateurs alike (of which I am most definitely in the latter category) to be taught by former world number one players. As I was to discover, there’s a reason that participants proudly sport Curtain Bluff Tennis Week t-shirts from previous years; the experience is rather addictive. Throughout the week, tennis participants are split into male and female groups and then separated into more manageable sized teams. During the clinics, the small groups are given a set amount of time in each court to practice a different skill with a different set of pros, before moving on to the next. Despite initially feeling like I had reverted to my gauche schoolgirl days – when sport was not exactly my forté – I quickly got into the swing of things (excuse
‘The sporting event initially began life as a professional island-wide tournament in 1975’ caddy as she chats with staff and guests. Their home at the peak of the bluff is the venue for our pre-tennis week cocktail reception and has undoubtedly the finest vistas of the area; enabling you to see as far as Montserrat and St Kitts. A Caribbean getaway is obviously a tempting excursion at any time of the year, but my visit coincides with the famous annual Antigua Tennis Week, which I have gallantly

the pun) and it was a massively informative, and, more pertinently, enjoyable experience. It’s a slightly surreal notion to have a former world champion grab my arm and assist my follow-through, and the encouraging and witty comments of Mr Stolle (‘that one’ll bring rain’ – he remarked at one of my many misguided, sky-grazing shots) added a jovial touch of informality. In true Caribbean fashion, the attitude is incredibly relaxed. Participants are equally welcome to stick religiously to the clinic schedule or dip in and out as they so choose. The inevitably competitive nature such a sport imbues is countered with humour and gusto from both participants and teachers (a combination of international pros and Curtain Bluff employees) who all take part in the many dinners, cocktail parties and soirées. They’re also more than happy to give an early morning one-on-one lesson too. The extra curricular activities on tap – cooking classes, trips to Shirley Heights – as well as an impressive menu of inclusive water sports (water-skiing, scuba diving, deep sea fishing) make the temptation to skip a clinic or two awfully high. It’s also essential, if your muscles are feeling the strain of your sporting endeavours, to test the resort’s spa, built only six years ago,
which provides not only a range of luxurious treatments, but is also home to some of the most dramatic views of the area. It’s easy in all-inclusive resorts to experience a sense of separation; the guests are cocooned – separate from the true identity of the country. Curtain Bluff has quite the opposite effect. Old Road would not be the region it is today without the resort and vice-versa. When Howard set up his hotel he didn’t just create a resort, but a charity and a home too, and this is reflected in the tennis week’s history. In Curtain Bluff ’s early years, the local children would take tennis balls that were hit outside, so the hotel invited them in and taught them how to play. This grew organically into the Old Road Fund; a charity that sends local youths to American academies and assists with health and education initiatives. A number of Curtain Bluff tennis pros are former beneficiaries of this scheme. Visitors are informed that there is a no tipping service, but to instead donate money to the fund. This is part of the genuine humility at the heart of Curtain Bluff. Managing Director Robert Sherman (who is more likely to be mistaken for a relaxed tourist in his daily uniform of shorts and t-shirt) is just as likely to
carry your suitcase to your room as any other member of staff. This is not a faux-charitable gesture to appeal to tourists, but is a natural component of the resort. The infectious Caribbean spirit could be blamed for this lack of ostentation; but it’s no doubt largely due to a love of the island, the people and the resort. This is clearly not just a job. Perhaps this explains why a large number of the staff – Robert included – arrived in their early 20s and simply never left. This also explains why boarding the plane at the end of our short, eventful trip, ready to fly back to reality is equally difficult. Until next season. Stay 7 nights pay for 5 at Curtain Bluff, Antigua from £2,525 pp based on 2 adults sharing a Junior Suite on a full board basis, including return economy class flights and private transfers. I
’m in a brand-new white Jaguar XJ speeding along the Mauritius coastline with the Indian Ocean on one side and a handsome Tic-Tac-proffering driver on the other, but all I can think about is the cold sensation creeping up my back. As ramshackle towns with little more than a beaten-up épicerie or boulangerie give way to fields of sugar cane and vast stretches of forest, I gaze at tree-encrusted pitons rising like shards of green glass in the distance. But I still can’t shake the icicles rising up my spine. ‘What on earth is going on with my seat?’ I finally ask the driver. ‘Climate control’ he says with a chuckle. ‘The leather is injected with a state-of-the-art cooling agent.’ So far, so James Bond. In fact, I am something of a spy today because I’m the first British journalist to see the new St Regis hotel on the southern tip of the island. They certainly chose their location well. Le Morne, a 550-metre mountain and one of Mauritius’ best-loved landmarks, provides a dramatic backdrop to the resort. The surrounding area is a protected nature reserve with strict laws forbidding any new construction. But this didn’t stop the St Regis. Instead of building anew, they flattened an existing hotel and built on top of it matching its floor-plan inch for inch, right down to the little wooden jetty that protrudes from the beach. Accommodation comes in the form of chic thatched cottages arranged in clusters, or ‘villages’, each served by teams of butlers housed in elegant open-fronted wall-papered sitting rooms. A grand plantationstyle manor house lies at the centre of the hotel,
boasting a genteel Victorian colonnade sprinkled with armchairs perfect for an afternoon snooze or for nibbling scones with a pot of Earl Grey. The four restaurants sit shoulder to shoulder along the colonnade, giving the hotel a sociable, buzzy feel, and I can testify that the Spaghetti Bolognese at the beachside Boathouse restaurant is superb. ‘Simply India’ is the place to be though. Michelinstarred chef Atul Kochhar, one of India’s most famous exports, is whipping up a taste tornado in the kitchen with his daring modern dishes. Chicken Tikka pie anyone?
a prestigious cookery competition held each spring at the Constance Belle Mar Plage on the east coast. Esteemed chefs from all corners of the globe battle it out for a clutch of modest silver trophies, but really it’s all about exchanging recipes (and sun-bathing). Angela Hartnett and Bruce Poole of Chez Bruce have both taken part in the past, and this year, bets are on Frances Atkins, one of Britain’s best female Michelin-starred chefs, bringing home a prize. Incidentally, the Belle Mar’s sister hotel, Le Prince Maurice, a little further up the coast, has recently undergone a transformation. With a new Sisley spa, a slate lap pool and an injection of Asian chic to the common areas, it’s looking better than ever. Repeat visitors will be pleased to hear that rooms retain a colonial feel with hard-wood floors, wicker day-beds and marbleheavy bathrooms but new snazzy touches include Mac Minis and slightly lower beds (after complaints they were too high). The rest of the five-star big-name hotels will certainly be standing to attention. After two decades of reign, many are starting to look tired, and if they want to compete with the handsome new St Regis with all its breezy ocean freshness, major refurbishments will be required. It seems that now is the time to embrace a new generation of Mauritian luxury – gelseated Jaguars and all.
‘I gaze at tree-encrusted pitons rising like shards of green glass’ As it happens, Kochhar is not the only VIC (very important chef) on the island. Last year, Shelina Permalloo (winner of MasterChef 2012) launched a Mauritian cookery school at Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa, and Tom Aiken is currently packing his Vilebrequins for a sojourn in March. There’s still time to book a master-class with him at the Royal Palm. Food lovers checking into the Four Seasons Anahita get an altogether different treat in the form of keys to a convertible Mini Cooper and a pre-programmed Sat Nav route taking in various tea plantations and rum distilleries, concluding in Port Louis’ China Town. On closer inspection, Mauritius’ ascending culinary standing is in large part thanks to
Leo flew to Mauritius with Air Mauritius and was a guest of Constance Le Prince Maurice. For more information see princemaurice.constancehotels.com, stregismauritius.com and airmauritius.com

An isle of one’s own
Harriet Compston discovers the art of taking it easy at a former sugar plantation on the legendary Carribean island of Nevis 64

t is the stuff of legends. Christopher Columbus set eyes upon it, Horatio Nelson married on it and a newly divorced Princess Diana escaped to it. Yes, the enchanting island of Nevis is ‘Queen of the Caribees.’ The Antigua of 20 years ago, Nevis stands at just 36 square miles, and with only 10,000 residents, you can drive around it in 40 minutes. Here, vulgarity is out of the window; no hotel chains sprawl far and wide, no tourists are bussed-in daily and no tacky beach equipment strangles its streets. Nelson once said ‘I have always been a quarter of an hour before my time and it has made a man of me.’ The same can be said for this Caribbean pocket. It’s a time warp of bliss. To see that Nevis is hidden away, one need only try to get to it. A plane to Antigua, a mini plane to St Kitts, a half hour road trip to St Kitts Harbour and a jolly boat ride later, you finally arrive at Nevis’ capital, Charlestown. A Nelsonian journey perhaps, but worth the effort. Four miles from Charlestown, past donkeys, coloured houses and crumbled buildings lies the Montpelier Plantation and Beach. Dating back to the 1700s, this boutique hotel was formerly a sugar estate, which did indeed host the wedding of Nelson and Fanny Nisbet in 1787. Now, over 300 years later, the plantation is sailing seamlessly and sensitively into the 21st century. There are 19 rooms (well, cottages really). All individually designed with a running Colonial chic theme, the look is light and spacious and each boasts sumptuous linen, Egyptian cotton and private verandas. Ask for Cottage 15, where Princess Diana stayed soon after her divorce, for it parades the most incredible uninterrupted views. Further down the path is the hotel swimming pool – utterly sublime with ice cold drinks served up on tap. And whilst on the subject of service, if you’re imagining cloned, suited and booted, machine-like staff, forget it. Everyone here is natural, polite and genuinely courteous. And now to the food; a triumph in its vast selection. Mixing French and Caribbean cuisine (think pan-seared snapper and key lime mille-feuille) the Nevis Restaurant 750 is definitely worth a visit. Their philosophy that ‘good food must be accompanied by an equally good bottle of wine’ is demonstrated by the in-house sommelier who provides excellent wine pairings. Best of all, however, is a candlelit dinner in the Mill Privée, the original sugar mill. Completely intact, it’s one of those rare experiences you are unlikely ever to repeat. The hotel is family run – and animal run (there are two gorgeous labradors) – and therein lies the key to its success. You feel at home, relaxed and can spend all day doing nothing or indeed everything. The hotel’s private beach nearby provides fantastic sunbathing on volcanic soil, the sea is warm like a hot bath, and Montpelier will do a delicious private picnic of grilled fish and all kinds of goodies, you only need ask.
‘Best of all is dinner in the 300-yearold sugar mill. It’s an experience you’re unlikely ever to repeat’ Sun, sea and sand aside, there are still lots of adventures to be found. Charlestown provides a Georgian colonial hit, as the childhood home to Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States. The town sings of dignified elegance, cleverly harmonised by the island’s colourful culture. Hens scratch in the main street whilst market stalls with fantastical-looking fruit, sit happily amongst the ‘OMG Desserts’ shop, the optimistically named ‘Super Foods supermarket’ and the spiritual ironmonger whose shop window is sincerely emblazoned with a bible quote. Yes, God reigns here, gospel style, and so little wonder Charlestown has an impressive array of churches. St James’ Windward, for example, houses one of only five black crucifixes in the world whilst just down the road is St Thomas’, the first Anglican church in the Caribbean, built in 1643. Church is so popular in fact, that there isn’t even a market on Sundays – nobody would go! For more of an adrenalin kick, Nevis Peak is the destination of choice. Up a 3,213ft
potentially active volcano, it’s a hard hike – the most difficult mountain climb in the Caribbean – but unquestionably a visual wonder. Starting in dry humid forest, the area evolves into deep rainforest, which turns into a knee-scraping, rock-climbing, hardcore workout. It’s tough but super fun and at the top, a visitors book can be signed by all intrepid souls who have made it. Enthralling, exciting, entertaining, Nevis is an island of many colours. So ‘splice the mainbrace’ as the Admiral would say, and set sail with immediate haste. For this magical land of hide and seek will not remain undiscovered for long. Harriet Compston travelled to Montpelier Plantation & Beach, St Kitts & Nevis, with Cox & Kings (0845 154 8941; coxandkings. co.uk). A 7-night stay is priced from £1,795 per person including flights with British Airways, return transfers from St Kitts and breakfast daily. All activities can be arranged through the hotel – montpeliernevis.com. 65

IN THEIR
OWN WORDS PHOTOGRAPHY: RICHARD CLARK
rook Green is quickly becoming the most sought after area to live in West London. Having worked in the area for the past three years, I have discovered a different side to London living. Brook Green has all the charm of a country village yet still offers all the conveniences and amenities one would expect from City living. The eclectic mix of people and their dogs brings vibrancy like no other to the area, and with one of the best French primary schools in London, Jacques Prévert, it naturally attracts a large number of European families keeping the rental market buoyant and demand levels consistently high for family homes. This trend in particular is set to remain as the school and area grow in popularity and reputation. One of the main draws for me is the wonderful sense of community within this small pocket of London. Bective Leslie Marsh enjoys getting involved in the community and sponsors many events and charities. It has been a personal joy of mine to help organise and host various events especially for West London Action for Children, a fantastic local charity for children and families in need. We have hosted many themed evenings from quiz nights to progressive suppers. The support and generosity we receive from the residents is second to none and continues to grow at each event. Summer in this part of town brings out the best in the area and its people: wiling away the summer evenings with a game of tennis on the
Green’s courts, unwinding at one of the many gastro pubs and restaurants, and washing it all down with a glass of red wine at a nearby bar. There really is something for everyone! The favourite part of my day is a stroll across the Green to one of my appointments, bumping into old clients and seeing all the friendly local faces that I regularly see at our events. People are never too busy for a chat en route which makes a refreshing change to many other parts of the capital. The market in the area remains consistently strong. Towards the end of 2012 we saw a slight change in supply and demand as the inevitable flood of properties came onto the market after the Olympics, but I am certain this will right itself within a short period of time. The buy to let market is stronger than ever; it has become almost common place to rent properties for new clients after exchange and have a tenant in place prior to completion, and I see no sign of this stopping. With our neighbouring areas of Holland Park and Kensington being perceived as less value for money, we are reaping the benefits as investors move west for a better yield on their buy to let purchases. It is set to be a good year for the Brook Green Lettings Market. I would like to wish all my clients and the Brook Green residents a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. PROPERTY FOCUS PHILIP WOOLLER
We have seen a lively start to 2013 and are delighted to be hearing from old clients and to see lots of sales valuations going into the diary. We are pleased that our launch marketing has been noticed, as has the shop on Askew Road. It is human nature to take stock at the start of a new year, though the plan of action is often unclear. We understand this completely and are here to help make those suggestions and provide the advice and guidance required. We have reached a milestone and are delighted to be advertising our first house for sale in this issue. As you’ll see we can cover W4 (Grove Park area) in addition to W12, W14 , W6 and W3! PROPERTY NEWS
JOSEPH MURPHY, SALES DIRECTOR AT ORCHARDS OF LONDON GIVES ABSOLUTELY AN INSIGHT INTO HIS WORKING DAY
MOST SATISFYING TRANSACTION I’VE HAD...
The most fabulous moment was when we sold our first property over £1 million. It was a proud moment as the property was on the market with two corporate agents for over three months and we got the asking price within 14 days and exchanged within 28 days. This was a prime example of how proactive our approach is.
MOST INTERESTING PROPERTY I’VE BEEN INVOLVED WITH...
On our books we have an extremely large three bedroom duplex apartment with two roof gardens set in a detached Edwardian building in Grove Park Gardens, which is unheard of as you find the area is peppered with large family homes but it also houses some of the nation’s favourite celebrities. The apartment is on sale for £900,000
and is generating great interest.
MOST UNUSUAL INTERIOR...
We have a house on our books on Milnthorpe Road which had the most amazing interiors and a grand entrance fit for a king. The property was let to a corporate for more than a few thousand pounds per week. It was not so much that the interior was unusual but it was grand and lavish without it being over the top!
I NEVER THOUGH I’D SEE...
Odd Fellow Hold – a church conversion. In the media I have seen unique and unusual buildings being converted into residential homes and this property was certainly an eye opener not to mention eye catching! 020 8995 9797; orchardsoflondon.com

LOST HOUR...
Grab Oscar the office Spaniel and head to the gardens of Chiswick House for some exercise, thinking time and admiration of those impressive landscaping works recently completed.
THE MOST FABULOUS COCKTAIL IS...
How many Chiswick residents have been to the Gunnersbury Triangle? This six acre wonderland of natural woodland is a haven for wildlife and great for lunchtime respite and retail escape.
Struggling with this in W4 as the Blue Bar at the Berkeley is without doubt the finest cocktail bar in London. Their Yellow Snapper is simply awesome; a fusion of Gin, yellow tomato juice, coriander, lemon, wasabi and ginger.
BEST KEPT SECRET
Not the most expensive property on our books but nevertheless a wonderful home onElmwood Road, perfect for a relocating family. There are 6 bedrooms and four bathrooms, stylish neutral décor and crisp clean lines throughout . Available now at £1,350 per week.
The first weeks of the year were exceptionally busy. Demand is particularly high for larger houses, with a growing number of local buyers looking to upsize, along with an increase in interest from overseas purchasers. Financial markets started the year on an upbeat note, and Richmond prices remain strong. Investors are continuing to favour bricks and mortar over stocks and bonds. Looking to the Spring, I anticipate the market will remain strong, with high levels of activity across all sectors of the market . 020 8940 1575 featherstoneleigh.co.uk
FAVOURTIE RESTAURANT...
Is La Trompette for consistent excellence and an amazing wine list or Le Vacherin where the buttered Monkfish is a sheer delight. Today it`s Le Vacherin - La Trompette is being refurbished!
STYLISH BOUTIQUE...
You can`t beat Billings & Edmonds. Otherwise Whisk on Devonshire Road is an amazing shop for utensils, pots, pans and so forth and Tribe has a wonderful selection of contemporary rugs.

Iris Murdoch, the Irish-born British author and philosopher, felt her heart was in London, which she associated with a “holiday feeling” considering herself to be a “terrific London gadabout”. She first moved to the city in 1921 at the age of 2 from Dublin with her mother to join her civil servant father in a small flat in Caithness Road. In 1925, she attended the prestigious Froebel Demonstration School at Colet Gardens, a fifteen minute walk across Brook Green from her home. A wonderful 5/6 bedroom Victorian house on Caithness Road with good living/ entertaining space and a secluded garden. With over 2600 square feet, the house has a state of the art kitchen, a contemporary feel throughout and is flooded with light. With the added benefit of a newly excavated basement providing additional flexible space, it is a must see on this premier residential road just off Brook Green. DOING IT FOR THE KIDS Douglas & Gordon, leading London estate agents, once again took to the streets on one of the coldest days in December for the third annual D&G Charity Day in aid of the children’s charity Kids Company. Over 350 removal boxes were filled across the company’s 19 offices, weighing over 6.5 tonnes, to create Christmas hampers for London’s most vulnerable children. This years master removers Anthony Ward Thomas supported the charity day by providing lorries, removal men and boxes for the day to help transport donations from the D&G offices to the Kids Company Headquarters in Blackfriars. The day was also supported by The Keyholding Co who helped collect donations across their network. As well as food and 750 toys, Douglas & Gordon collected over £10,000 from generous donors within Douglas & Gordon territory. Ivor Dickinson, Managing Director of Douglas & Gordon said: ‘Once again we have been amazed by the generosity of homeowners and businesses within D&G land. In previous years we have collected over 8.5 tonnes, but considering the recession it is no surprise that the total donations weighed in at 6.5 tonnes. We are still astonished by the amount received which will create hampers for thousands of Kids Company families most in need over Christmas. We would like to thank everyone who has generously donated to this worthwhile cause. For further information please contact Ivor Dickinson, Managing Director at Douglas & Gordon, on 020 7963 4600
STRUTT & PARKER AIMS TO RAISE £100,000 FOR GOSH
Strutt & Parker has begun a fundraising initiative in support of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, its chosen charity for 2012/2013, with a launch event in Mayfair, London. The property firm will concentrate its fundraising efforts on the charity’s Raising the Roof appeal for the year ahead as it aims to raise £100,000 towards a new centre for neurosciences, in particular a dedicated patient interview room. Property professionals as well as ex Scotland rugby player and Strictly Come Dancing star, Kenny Logan turned out to show their support. Great Ormond Street Hospital is one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals with the broadest range of dedicated children’s healthcare specialists under one roof in the UK. Andy Martin, senior partner at Strutt & Parker said: “We chose Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity because of the incredible work the hospital does to help children from all over the UK for the past 160 years and it is a charity which is close to many of our hearts. Throughout the year we will be holding various events with the aim of raising £100,000 for the Raising the Roof appeal which will ensure the building work on the neuroscience wing can be completed.” Jo Hurl from Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity explained: “The centre will make a serious and lasting difference to children in the UK and abroad who suffer from complex neurological disorders. Once we reach this charity target, the hospital will put Strutt & Parker’s name on a plaque on the wall of the neuroscience wing.” For further information or to donate please contact, Olivia McAlpine on 02073185132 or olivia. mcalpine@struttandparker.com
ROBERT BARR SALES MANAGER KERR & CO RESIDENTIAL
If our prognosis is correct 2013 should be even better than 2012 in terms of the property market. 2012 saw Kerr and Co set numerous price records throughout W12 and W6 and sold more properties than at any stage in our 20 year history. With people being priced out of central London locations we are inundated with cash rich highly motivated buyers. The limited supply of properties place on the market has meant, with this phenomenal demand, prices have continued to increase at a steady rate. It is therefore imperative for buyers to have their finances, solicitors and surveyors in place before looking at properties. 020 8762 0522 robert@kerrandco.com

On 6th December we once again closed all our offices and D&G’s 200 employees donned their Kids Co hooded tops to take to the streets from dawn til dusk collecting as many items as possible. At the end of a rewarding, if exhausting, day we collected more than:
– 6.5 tonnes in contributions – 350 full removal boxes
“We are thrilled that this year the Douglas & Gordon staff have collected even more amounts of food, toys and donations. All of these donations will help create even more Christmas hampers for London’s vulnerable children.” Camila Batmanghelidjh, Kids Company www.kidsco.org.uk www.douglasandgordon.com
