S
imon Reeve is the kind of guest you’d love to have at a dinner party. Full of stories of incredible adventures, near-death experiences and bizarre cultures, he’s seen more of the world than many of us will in a lifetime. Throughout our hour long conversation, however, I got the impression that he’d be loathed to divulge too many anecdotes for fear of coming across as arrogant or bigheaded. A quote that stuck with me, that I didn’t get to include in the piece, was when we discussed the many countries he has yet to see, and his desire to explore more hills and mountains: ‘I really need to climb some hills with my son and look at the view’ he said, ‘there’s something in that that speaks to the soul.’ There was such a profound simplicity to this sentence and it sums up his character perfectly. Elsewhere in the magazine, Isobel Finbow chatted with West Kensington actor Stefano Braschi on acting alongside Ben Whishaw and Judi Dench in John Logan’s critically acclaimed Peter and Alice. We’ve also spoken with Abundance co-founder Sarah Cruz on the hugely successful fruit picking initiative and her involvement with local residents, businesses and schools. The scheme supplies to many bars and restaurants in the local area – try a mulberry gin at Charlotte’s Bistro – and turn to page 58 for our round-up of the best places to go in the area for cocktails. Some extensive research went into the piece, I can assure you.

The greatest tennis player in history, many have suggested, Perry spent most of his professional life in or around west London living in Pitshanger Lane, Ealing, from 1919-1935. As an amateur player, Perry won three Wimbledon championships before finally going professional in 1936, accumulating eight Grand Slam wins, two doubles titles and three mixed doubles victories amongst other accolades in his 20 year career. No wonder he was the world Number One for three years. Amid all of these athletic achievements, Perry is also credited with inventing the world’s first sweatband. 11

Reviewers of Peter and Alice have labelled it both ‘deeply moving’ and ‘irredeemably bleak’. Where do you think it lies on the scale? It’s very difficult on first viewing, even on first reading of the play. It pulls some pretty hard punches. Some of the most beautiful and poetic themes can be the most devastating. The story of these two real individuals is filled with tragedy, much more than many people would be used to in their own lives, especially for Peter. It’s linked to these two tales [Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan] that we all know very well. When you marry the two; the realities of growing old, of a very difficult life, and the excitement and hope and wonder of these two fictitious stories that all children grew up with, it becomes a very moving story.
to me. We’re amazed by it every day when we walk on, how effortless it looks. Chris is the best at what he does, and in this play it really does take the story and characters and text to a whole new level, because it takes references from the places that Lewis Carroll and JM Barrie created, the places that they wanted to take us to.
To the Wonder
Did you grow up with these stories? I thought I remembered the books, but what I remembered were the Disney films. When I was re-reading it I found Alice in Wonderland to be a beautiful and insanely complex story, but the basics of it – the themes and ideas – are iconic. The idea of an inquisitive young girl finding her way through the door in an upside down universe, and a boy who never grows up and all he wants to do is fight pirates and live in a forest, those basic themes of the story most people do know, even if it is Disney or general culture, rather than having read the books or seen the play.
facts that are mentioned are, bar none, absolutely correct, but the story that he’s writing goes beyond biography or reflection; its an examination of childhood, growing up, and the difficulties of life. Dame Judi Dench and Ben Wishaw have worked together before as M and Q in Skyfall. What was the dynamic like between them this time? They didn’t have any scenes together in Skyfall! But you’re not going to find two more sincere, hardworking, fun-loving actors. Watching them work every day was a huge privilege. Feeding off their energy, being inspired by their talent and hard work – you can’t ask for more. It sounds simple but I never cease to be excited and relieved by the fact that you can meet people whose work you have admired for so long, who still have so much excitement for it.
The trend in Hollywood is to revisit traditional children’s stories, such as Snow White and the Huntsman and Oz, which delve into more adult themes. What is the fascination with fairy tales? Anything rooted in a well known children’s story immediately has resonance with everyone. It’s a re-imagination of something that people have known since childhood. When a good story is a good story it has a lot in it which is worth telling. For a film to be able to attract children and teenagers and adults is no mean feat. derlust Gemma Billington talks to author and presenter Simon Reeve on adventure, Australia and being a boy from Acton
W
riter and presenter Simon Reeve has a boyish enthusiasm and charm. When we speak, he’s just completed filming trip two out of three in Australia for a new BBC2 series, though he seems more tired out by the demands of his young son than by any form of jet lag. He comes across as part gap-year student – in awe of the incredible things he’s experienced through his enviable job and the grossout delicacies he’s eaten (more on that later) – but is also a sharply intelligent, articulate individual with an overwhelming sense of humility. Did I mention he’s also rather easy on the eye? Switch briefly onto one of Reeve’s documentaries and you may well think you’ve stumbled upon familiar glossy, aspirational travel territory. There is, however, a lot more to Reeve and his work than first appearances would imply. This is, in fact, the man that first entered the public mainstream via his groundbreaking book, The New Jackals, inspired by the first attack on the World Trade Centre in 1993 and which chillingly predicted future Al Qaeda attacks. Reeve admits that The New Jackals languished on the shelves of books stores before the events
of 9/11, but in the short time that followed it quickly became a New York Times bestseller and led to many television and radio interviews. ‘I went from being a writer on a very obscure subject to somebody who had written about the most important news event of our time’ he says, acknowledging the rather cruel irony of his success. It was this sudden catapult into the mainstream that eventually led Reeve to be picked up by the BBC, and his first foray into television saw him focus on the ‘stan’ countries
lack of preachiness, just a sense that the team are trying to show the whole picture. ‘We show the light and the shade’ he says, when I ask what he tries to get across with his documentaries. ‘The idea behind the programmes is to blend in issues along with, hopefully, an exciting journey. You can get people who wouldn’t necessarily watch something about child labour in Bangladesh to learn a bit about child labour in Bangladesh by watching a journey that incorporates that into it. You want people to realise that there’s poverty and suffering in what seems to be rich places and there’s joy and beauty in poor places as well. That’s the mix of life.’ Reeve’s adventures have exposed him to the kind of extremes that the average person can only get close to in their local cinema. He has been to over 110 countries (he attempted to tally them up after contracting malaria a few years ago and – whilst practically at death’s door – came to the conclusion that he’d had a good run), has walked through minefields, been to Mogadishu twice and was adopted by a tribe of former head-hunters in Borneo. His scariest encounters, however, have come courtesy of some rather hairy drivers. ‘Some of the scariest times are when you don’t expect

Eschewing the usual superficial travel programme route, all of Reeve’s documentaries focus on the country and culture as a whole; warts and all. A scene that springs to mind, for example is from his epic journey in the recent series The Indian Ocean, which saw him explore an island of rubbish in the otherwise picture perfect Maldives that resembled an apocalyptic wasteland. With every offering, however, there’s a distinct

as ‘blessed’ to be in this particular career and to have grown up in England and I get the impression that he is nicely settled into ordinary, suburban family life, knowing he has the opportunity to take off on amazing adventures and call it work, returning to normality armed with an arsenal of fascinating stories and artifacts (the best has got to be his Somali Diplomatic passport). It even takes some convincing to assure him that his son will grow up to find his tales of adventure cool, and not ‘boring’. At the end of our interview, I finally ask the pertinent question; what is the weirdest thing he’s eaten? There is the briefest of pauses, ‘probably penis soup’ he replies nonchalantly. ‘It was in Madagascar and it was the penis of the zebu. It wasn’t too bad and it is a good story. It’s just part of the gig, if you’re a TV ponce, then you have to face up to the fact that you’ll have to eat some unusual food.’ He then becomes enthusiastic at the myriad recollections, ‘roasted sheep’s eyeballs are delicious’ he insists. them,’ he concedes, ‘yes it is scary to be in the frontline in Mogadishu, but also there have been times driving in India, for example, where I’ve thought, “oh my God there’s a truck coming directly towards us, we’re not going to make it”.’ All of his stories, though recounted with passion, are also told without the slightest hint of pretension and you get the impression that Reeve is just genuinely happy to have experienced it all and is having a whale of a time doing so. ON LOCATION IN AUSTRALIA Given Reeve’s penchant for the obscure and precarious, Australia seems like quite a tame choice to document. So why film there? ‘It’s a slight stroke of genius from one of the bosses at the BBC who realised that we haven’t filmed anything like this in Australia for a long time and the country really than most people will in their lifetimes, has changed’ he explains, ‘the programme is it is surprising and rather flattering to all about Oz in all its different forms; wildlife, learn that Reeve feels very much at home landscapes and lots of people who are pretty back in Blighty and has no desire to live damned wonderful.’ Though not quite with anywhere else. ‘I love London,’ he says, ‘it’s a finished filming when we speak, his trips spectacular, magnificent city that just throbs have already seen him visit a wildlife hospital with excitement.’ Born and raised Acton, and hang out with members of a fearsome Reeve cites Ealing Broadway as his teenage motorcycle gang. ‘Although we think we know hangout and even worked in a charity shop Australia, there’s actually a whole lot more to on Chiswick High Road before his foray into it.’ He concludes. media after (in his words) failing miserably For a man who has seen more of the world academically. oing to a wedding this summer? Here’s a little rule of thumb: if you’re one of the following people then everyone will be looking at you – a) the bride, b) the jilted ex or c) a pregnant women. There’s something quintessentially joyful about a pregnant woman at a celebration of love. Everyone seems to enjoy seeing someone blooming (and will always comment on how they look). Wedding guests, from old Aunt Hortensia to the flower girl, will gather round and chat to the Pregnant Lady. It’s a good conversation piece and a positive, fun thing. However, if you’re the pregnant one working out what to wear to a wedding can be an enormous challenge. If you’re looking for something comfortable but fabulous in the photos, here are my top three tips.
DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK
Traditionally black and darker colours have been seen as a wedding no-no for guests. This is definitely changing, particularly for more urban weddings. If you’re pregnant and feeling whale-like, the darkness can be comforting. Our top tip? Choose a dark dress with a lighter contrast edge. This ‘Happy Dress’ is monochrome, bang on-trend for this year and super smart for a wedding wardrobe. Accessories are angels of transformation; choose a versatile dress and add a pop of fabulous colour with a statement clutch and a fabulous fascinator and you’re style personified.
WORK OUT YOUR NEW ‘BEST BITS’ Grown-up women often think they’ve worked out what tends to suit them by the time they get to childbearing age. However, your body
shape changes so dramatically with pregnancy, you do need to spend a little time working out your ‘new best bits’ (that’s the technical Fashion Stylist’s term I’m sure). Always worn super-short shifts to weddings but ankles a bit puffy? Go for the gloriously elegant Maxi approach instead. There will be something that works for you; when you’re pregnant, it’s just worth taking a bit of time to work out what suits the new you and find the outfit that will make you feel cool, chic and confident all day long.

What was the inspiration behind the Talisman Crown? Hollie Bonneville Barden, Creative Designer: The Talisman crown is the ultimate celebration of diamonds, revealed in all their natural beauty and rich variety. Diamonds are one of the wonders of the earth. I wanted to use the symbol of the
crown alongside the symbol of the diamond to celebrate a beautiful journey of past, present and future told through the beauty and brilliance of light. Describe the various parts of its design and what they mean. Th is beautiful story of time is held in a
journey from the top of the crown and completes at the bottom. Beginning with the awe-inspiring 73ct lustrous rough diamond, we showcase the natural beauty of the diamond as it is found in its original untouched state. The set diamonds signifying our achievements and the open space our future aspirations. What was the inspiration behind the Talisman Wonder? The Talisman Wonder was created to celebrate rough diamonds. Since ancient Egypt, these diamonds were the exclusive privilege of Kings and Queens and were said to protect, bring good luck and prosperity. Before it was discovered that diamonds could be polished, their natural brilliance and innate character were especially prized. With the Talisman Wonder, we wanted to create a modern-day treasure, celebrating the heritage of these majestic diamonds. How many diamonds were used to create it? There are a total of 691 diamonds making a total of 271 carats. It took 10 years to collect all its rough diamonds. Was the design finalised before the diamond sourcing took place – or was it more of an ‘organic’ process? Andrew Coxon, President of the De Beers Institute of Diamonds: We started collecting for the Talisman Collection in 2001 but it was a slow process as most rough diamonds are not naturally beautiful and most need polishing. Occasionally, Mother Nature will surprise us with a beauty, but very rarely. Only one diamond in 10,000 would be our own estimate, as we looked at so many parcels of rough diamonds. The very best and most exceptional diamonds were sometimes too big for the designs of the Talisman Collection but they were too rare to let go of, so we bought them anyway in the hope that we would create something very special with them one day. We were not disappointed! The first time we saw The Talisman Wonder we could not stop ourselves from touching its face, the beauty was really overwhelming.
Wonder is of the highest quality. Once it was cut, it was then hand-sculpted into its smooth, elegant gradient using traditional techniques. The hand-mottled method used gives it an extra layer of texture to blend beautifully with the lustre of the rough diamonds.

What’s the best way to maintain your diamond? When you purchase a diamond at De Beers, you can pop in store any time for a complementary cleaning of your piece of jewellery. For a quick clean at home, we advise doing it with a soft brush and soapy lukewarm water. To keep your diamond sparkly, avoid dust and grease, so do remove your ring when applying hand cream. In any case, we recommend a regular visit to the store for a full cleaning of the piece, as well as a check-up of the setting.

• Set a budget and stick to it by negotiating hard with suppliers, especially if they were recommended by your venue; they will often be paying commission on your booking. • Don’t copy ideas from a magazine or pick a colour and stick to it; instead think about how to reflect your own personalities and interests in the styling of your day. • On your wedding day remember that you are the host, so you also need to think about the event from your guests’ perspective. This means making sure that the whole day flows naturally, and that guests aren’t left standing around without a drink while you have pictures taken, for example. It is really important that each guest gets to spend at least a short time with you both.

• Appoint someone as the coordinator on the day. This could be a friend, or ideally, a professional. Without a coordinator, you will spend the whole day sweating the details yourself, which will significantly reduce your enjoyment of the wedding day. When you are planning a wedding there are so many suppliers keen for your business that it’s hard to know where to turn. No matter what size your budget, you want quality and value for money. ven if you haven’t heard of Bethan Gray, you’ve probably seen or even sat on something she’s designed. Snapped up as a graduate after winning a New Designers Award in 1998, she spent a decade with Habitat, becoming head of furniture design. And then her Noah range for John Lewis became a best-seller. Now she works independently from a studio at Great Western Studios, where this month she and her own brand G&T are the focus of their Inside Design season. The world of furniture design might be mostly male, but Bethan Gray doesn’t have
any theories about why, though she says it’s not that way in college. And she notes two female inspirations, French architect Charlotte Perriand and Irish designer Eileen Grey, plus the contemporary Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola. Gray’s work trades on her own name, established over a decade at Habitat under Tom Dixon, whose emphasis on named designers marked a change in approach for the store. It’s easy to see why Gray’s sleek, stylish designs are successful, and she describes her own work confidently. ‘My style is contemporary but warm. The warmth 47

I aim for a timeless appeal that will work in a contemporary as well as a classic environment, trying to create style in proportions as well as details.’ Longevity is important too, and she pictures her pieces being passed on to future generations. Intriguing details include brogueing, inspired by the shoe process, in the form of a band of leather wrapped around a tabletop. ‘I didn’t know how brogue shoes were made so I worked with a specialist. It’s not hand-punched, it’s laser-cut.’ The brogue table comes in various sizes and heights and it’s a ‘considered, high quality piece that people can use,’ in Gray’s words, and was nominated for last year’s Elle Decoration Awards. A new range of Brogue Tables with bright leathers are set to launch this month, with colours including fuschia, red and peach in addition to the initial green and white pieces. One of the reasons Gray cites as the inspiration for leaving Habitat was a desire to work with different materials, especially marble and leather. ‘I’m obsessed with marble at the minute,’
she says. She is currently working on carved marble tables inspired by Italian and Swiss churches for the Inside Design exhibition. There will be brogueing in marble and a focus on highlighing how pieces are made by deconstructing them. ‘Many of my designs look simple but they’re not simple to make, so it’s showing that,’ explains Gray. So the tabletop will be separated from its legs, for instance, and we’ll be able to see how they attach. What about Gray’s own home? She has lived in west London for some years and is currently based in Hammersmith Grove. Is she surrounded by her own work? ‘Yes,’ she admits. ‘There’s a lot of my own – I’m bringing some Habitat units from my home for the exhibition – and as well as the contemporary pieces, I have old things and vintage pieces from Golborne Road.’ Inside Design with Bethan Gray runs from 26 April to 9 May at Great Western Studios, 65 Alfred Road W2. T
he nature notes handed out at the entrance to Perivale Wood tell you that there are four million bluebells in this 10-hectare nature reserve in Ealing. At first you think it must be an exaggeration. Then you step into this wonderland and realise there is little reason to doubt or need to try counting for yourself; all that matters is that the bluebells here are one of the city’s rare and unforgettable natural sights. So precious is the wildlife here that Perivale opens to the public just once a year, on either the last Sunday in April, or the first Sunday in May, just in time to see the bluebells in their full glory. As you venture into their midst, you feel like a trespasser in another land. This is not a place for man, but an ecosystem for ever-increasing numbers of butterfly, moth and bird species that have made this reserve home – where the long meadow grass provides habitat for lizards and butterflies, while the shaded waters of the medieval pond shelter the smooth newt and woodland birds. Perivale, also known as Braddish Wood, is 7 hectares of ancient woodland, and almost one of recent habitat, while meadow, pasture and scrubland are grazed by four horses from May to October, to maintain an untidy sward. The old-school style of management, employed today on this patch of old Middlesex, is down to the commitment of the Selborne Society, which purchased the site in 1923. It was the culmination of efforts begun some years earlier by one of its members, Robert Read – an Ealing naturalist, who had fallen in love with the birdsong he had heard coming from the wood as he worked along the nearby Grand Union Canal. Read pioneered a project to protect birds in the area, and as early as 1902 Perivale was established as a bird sanctuary, and a keeper employed to protect the woodland against poachers, bird-catchers, egg collectors and flower sellers. When the society acquired the site, the surrounding area was a rural idyll. Although the expanding city has made its way here, the contours of this nature reserve have remained largely the same for the best part of 250 years – perhaps even longer. So, what you may glimpse here but once a year is a rebellion against that urban march.
THROUGH THE YEAR
As the woodland awakes, springtime blossom erupts from the wild service and blackthorn trees and the floor is awash with bluebells, before May brings the gold tones of the yellow archangel. Vines and brambles creep across the forest floor. The tree canopy thickens above, and so dense is the vegetation that visibility is reduced to a few meters. In summer, the long
grass of the ancient pasture hosts legless lizards and small brown field voles, while ringlets, marbled white and brown argus feast on flora in the north paddock. The air is filled with honeysuckle perfume. Little orange wood mice swarm over the boughs of the ancient trees as autumn comes, but are soon preyed on by the tawny owls that lurk in the trees. Winter beats the woodland into retreat, as animals and plants batten down the hatches. But the odd long-tailed tit and goldcrest can be seen venturing across frosted ground, to feed on the fruits of the oak, hazel, hawthorn and holly. SPOTTER’S GUIDE GETTING THERE Perivale is a few minutes’ walk from Perivale Station, served by the Central Line. The surrounding area belongs to section nine of the Capital Ring Walk, which follows the Grand Union Canal towpath on one side of the site, from the nearby Paradise Fields Wetlands nature reserve. NEARBY NATURAL WONDERS Paradise Fields Wetlands was created on the site of the former Greenford Golf Course and has established itself as a wildlife haven. It is now managed primarily for nature conservation and comprises reedbeds, wetland areas and hay meadows. Many rare bird species nest here, including reed buntings and several species of warbler. A pair of lapwing has bred in recent years – a rare occurrence in Greater London. HAWTHORN Well known as a hedgerow plant, uncut hawthorn grows into large trees. Their berry-like fruits are the perfect meal for thrushes, like the blackbird and fieldfare. BLUEBELL Indicative of ancient woodland, native bluebells can be distinguished from the Spanish variety by their narrower, darker flowers and delicate stem which create the characteristic drooped shape. ELEPHANT HAWK-MOTH A medium-sized hawk moth, on the wing from May to July. Common in woodlands, where it can be seen at dusk.

‘May is really the month when the garden warms up and heads into summer, it is the month when The Chelsea Flower show opens its doors and heralds in summer. The worst of the winter weather is usually done and dusted by now and bedding plants can be planted out in pots on the terrace or in the ground (although, do watch out for random late frosts and protect the plants with horticultural fleece). These plants will flower their socks off throughout the summer so keep them fed either with a granular feed in the soil or a balanced liquid feed. Sarah Cruz, co-founder of local foodie initiative Abundance, gives Absolutely the low-down on the fruits of her labour In a nutshell, what is Abundance? We are a community project and we harvest seasonal surplus fruit and provide to local restaurants and grocers. We typically get contacted by local residents, for example an elderly couple or family who may have an apple tree in their back garden who need help picking the fruit. Hundreds of fruit trees a year go unpicked and within Chiswick alone we’ve picked over a tonne of fruit per year since 2010. A group in Sheffield originally started the name Abundance and they’re pretty similar to us; they map all the local fruit trees and they harvest them. There are Abundance groups in Leeds, Manchester and several in London. We just loved the name – it really says it all. How long has Abundance been running for? We started in January 2010 but before that I started a scheme called Chiswick’s Local Produce back in 2008. I partnered up with Karen Liebreich, who was running the Chiswick House Kitchen Garden. I came along to help make use of some of their surplus fruit and veg and that’s how we got started working together and the two of us decided to form Abundance. Can you tell us about your work with primary schools? We’re the only Abundance group in the country that works with schools. We currently work with six in the local area with lots more waiting
get them commercially. Quinces are also hard to come by and expensive and we get fantastic quinces locally. We also pick cherries, figs and lots of different types of plums.

The children have experience of harvesting the trees and taking it back to the school. I don’t see why there shouldn’t be an Abundance programme in every school in London. Do the kids enjoy it? Yes, it doesn’t matter how tired I am or how grim the day, it all fades away when you see these kids arrive at the garden. We discuss the different shapes of the fruit and explain that just because it has a blemish doesn’t mean it’s unusable. It’s educational but fun, that’s why the teachers are so keen on it. What kind of fruit do you harvest typically? The bulk of what we produce is apples and pears but I’m really interested in mulberries – the restaurants go mad for them because you can’t
Are all the trees privately owned? They tend to be on private land but we do pick local street trees too. We now have a database of 100 or so tree owners, but we know there are lots more out there and we get contacted all the time. What restaurants do you supply to? Sam’s Brasserie, Charlotte’s Bistro, Annie’s... The Roebuck was probably the first one I worked with and Outsider Tart are huge supporters too. What kind of events do you do? We hold workshops throughout the year and as Abundance is all not-for profit, we have to put on events to keep us going. Last year we put on The Edible High Road to coincide with the Chelsea Flower Show Fringe. This year we’re doing the Herbal High Road, which will be made up of herbal planting like lavender and rosemary bushes. Cocktail Hour Bottom’s up! Absolutely explores west London’s finest cocktail bars
Sam’s Brasserie Tucked away nice and quietly from Chiswick High Road, Sam’s Brasserie literally does everything; from a solitary coffee to a three course dinner. The brassiere to the left of the entrance is spacious, well-lit and more family orientated, whereas the 55 seat bar is sleek with sofas in the corner, small tables in the middle and little cubicles lined up along the windows. On an instruction to ‘surprise me’, the barman was more than willing. He would start mixing and shaking, only going on a suggested spirit, and produced some amazing drinks. They say a good barman is meant to be able to judge what someone will like just by looking at them – well he got it pretty spot on. He also recommended the baby back ribs with the house marinade, which, in between mint juleps and old fashioneds, is about the best way to enjoy what the restaurant has to offer. To wash it all down we were given a Jaffa cake shot, just one of many of their many quirky drinks. TOP TIPPLE: MINT JULEP About as refreshing as it gets; Maker’s Mark whisky with lots of fresh mint and Gomme. Ideally should be drunk on top of a mountain with the sun beating down, but perching on the end of the bar will do just as well. samsbrasserie.co.uk
Ales & Tails In west London, there are more family-friendly gastro pubs than you can shake the proverbial stick at, but cocktail boozers are harder to seek out. Though not a dedicated cocktail bar, Ales & Tales in central Twickenham will keep all parties happy; popular on rugby match days with a huge selection of ales and lagers, but also providing an impressive array of innovative cocktails too (hence its clever name). There’s also full marks for style, with plush seating and a nod to east end cool by way of panels of House of Hackney wallpaper. Seasonal British produce is at the top of the menu and that
goes for both the exceptional food (devised by award-winning chef Tommy Cooney) as well as the drinks. The cocktails utilise delicious and unique ingredients such as rhubarb, tamarind infused gin and celery (though not all at once, you’ll be pleased to hear). TOP TIPPLE: TWICKENHAM FRUIT CUP This drink pays homage to the area’s most famous sporting export and combines Earl Grey infused gin, cointreau, lillet blanc and peach bitters topped off with ginger ale. alesandtails.co.uk

This stylish establishment is a welcome new hangout in Hammersmith, situated directly underneath the Brook Green Hotel. Small but perfectly formed, the atmosphere is brilliantly Prohibition-era irreverence (it almost feels as if you should be sneaking in after midnight), with contemporary twists in the lighting and cheeky artwork. The huge sharing platters are a step up from the bog-standard crisps and peanuts bar snacks, and as for the all important cocktail menu, Smith’s do a damn fine job on the classics (with no less than three varieties of Martinis) but it’s really worth opting for one of the innovative specials. Well, when in Rome. Make a night of it by hiring one of the cosy booths... who care’s if it’s on a school night? Charlotte’s Bistro This classy bistro-cum-bar is a favourite with families and night owls alike – and the watering hole of choice for the numerous estate agents in the area. The cocktail list is surprisingly concise, with only eight cleverly monikered tipples to choose from, plus a polite P.S to point out that the amiable staff can make a classic or something bespoke upon request. Though gin is Charlotte’s liqour of choice (a
popular ‘gin school’ runs every Monday), the guys are happy to offer tasters of impressive homemade sloe gin, plumcello and mulberry gin, provided by local fruit pickers Abundance. There’s even a couple of pungent homemade bitters in apothecary style bottles. Seasonal produce is paramount at Charlotte’s and the menu changes on a monthly basis, so catch your new favourite while you can.

sk a Chiswickian (or do they prefer Chiswickite?) about Annie’s and they will likely get a little cagey. Hidden away on a residential street that runs parallel to the Thames, the restaurant has been a local secret for 10 years, and they like it that way. During the summer, diners sit outside, spilling onto the street, and in the winter it is a cosy little retreat to hide away from the cold. Annie’s is the kind of place where you go for a romantic meal, or an intimate catch up with friends. In the small, lower dining room, candlelight dances off the pink and purple rococo-styled interiors, while flowers in full bloom spill out of long-necked vases. The room has thoughtfully been designed to make you feel at home – and most people certainly seem to be. Almost everyone that came in during the two hours we were there, the staff knew by name, and those they
didn’t were treated like old friends anyway. Those expecting to eat lightly, won’t find that here. Founder Lorraine Angliss has 25 years experience as a restaurateur, so she knows a thing or two about feeding hungry clientele. Simply put, Annie’s was designed to serve what people wanted to eat: hearty portions and British classics – but these come with an added Mediterranean twist. We order cocktails to begin – mine is a refreshingly light margarita cosmopolitan while my dinner companion has the light raspberry bellini. Both might have been all the more perfect if it had been a summer’s day. While we await our orders, delicious aromas waft through the restaurant as the waiters deliver rustic chopping boards piled high with towering burgers, fish and chips, and shepherd’s pie. For starters, we go for large crispy circles of calamari that are deliciously soft and tender inside and not too chewy, and super soft scallops in a pool of
artichoke foam. I ask the waiter just exactly how big the house special main of half a roast chicken is, he optimistically tells me it is manageable. When our order arrives, I instantly know he has lied to me. But it is no bad thing; the bird is large, flavoursome, carefully seasoned and moist, while the sweet potato fries are moreish. I don’t make it to the side salad and I might not have noticed it at all if it hadn’t been balanced on my chopping board. Meanwhile, on the other side of the table, my guest is having trouble finishing an amply sized thick cut steak, served perfectly medium rare next to crisp chunky chips. The hot fudge brownie for dessert comes highly recommended, so we order one to share and it is a lovely, sticky and gooey cube with melting ice cream on top and definitely worth every single calorie. I can see why the locals are protective of Annie’s, if I lived nearby I would probably be just as precious. 61

I
t was a humid, grey day, and the whole world seemed to be on the roads. On the ten-lane highway that streamed out from Pudong International, not only did the drivers of unnecessarily large vehicles seem in an interminable rush, but they appeared happy enough to jostle illegally for tarmac space. But once Shanghai’s vertiginous skyscrapers began to emerge from behind the impenetrable mist, it was obvious we were all headed in the same direction. The city is split into two and the Huangpu River does the dividing. The Eastern side is Pudong, where I was myself staying at the marvellous Pudong Shangri-la Hotel, while Puxi is the other bank. It’s not hard to differentiate the two: Pudong is where you’ll find the modern buildings which make up the impressive Shanghai skyline, while Puxi contains the historical quarters, including the trendy French Concession. After a few hours refreshing myself, I left Pudong for Puxi by crossing the river by ferry to the world-famous Bund. The Bund, or the embankment, is a stage: when I was there, a quartet of middle-aged women were standing on individual platforms performing a Tai Chi routine, a saxophonist played on a stool beside
them, a cluster of old ladies chatted while they de-shelled a bucket of crawfish, while hundreds of people were snapping away keen to capture at least some of the magnificent backdrop. Also among the crowds were identikit just-married couples (I counted twenty-two), all decked out in Kate Middleton replica dresses and surrounded by friends throwing petals in the air. Weddings are big here. The Bund isn’t remarkably beautiful, but it is here that Chinese tourists, Shanghai locals
Banking Corporation and The Shanghai Club, remind of a long heritage. We may now know Shanghai, home to over 20 million, as an economic powerhouse, but often neglected is the fact that it was once a world leader in the 1920s. When China lost the First Opium War, Shanghai became an open port and saw international settlers open concessions in the city. The city benefited economically, but much of its modern-day infrastructure harks back to those early days in the 20th Century when the city was a breeding ground for business and global influences. A dark spell under Communist rule limited Shanghai from developing further, but of late, it has certainly returned to what it once was. And much more. Thankfully, not all of China is undergoing rapid expansion and change. In fact, Shanghai’s faithful retain of its colonial past is a trait witnessed in other cities. After a somewhat whistle-stop tour of the city, where I, among other things, enjoyed the shopping crush at Nanjing Road and ate copious amounts of delicious street food – watch out when eating the soup dumpling delicacy xiaolongbao, which explodes in your mouth and burn

One need only look at the buildings: on Pudong, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Centre loom down as representatives of the money-spinning part of the city, whereas on Puxi, the Neo-Classical, Baroque and several Art Deco influences on several of the height-restricted buildings, including the former Hong Kong Shanghai

the tongue – I flew out in a south-westerly direction to Guilin. It’s calm here, and often touted as a Chinese tourist’s haven. It’s easy to see why. The noticeable absence of infrastructure, replaced instead by majestic cone-shaped, emerald green Karst mountains is soothing. Personally, I would never have assimilated such breathtaking topography with mainland China. My hotel, the Shangri-La Guilin, also reflected the change in pace. Where the Pudong was the luxurious multifaceted sanctuary-like hotel constantly ready to unwind any tired businessman, the Shangri-La at Guilin, where distant crickets are heard at night and tuneful birds are ever-present in the orchard and on the terrace, felt certainly more like a resort. With a landscaped garden, two swimming pools, which would no doubt come in handy throughout the tropical summers, and the translucent green Li River flowing just outside this hotel, the Shangri-La in Guilin evokes the same tranquillity the city has in droves. My time in Guilin, unsurprisingly, was spent mostly on or at least, always near to the Li River. On two consecutive days, I was
driven along the Osmanthus tree-lined streets (Guilin means Forest of Sweet Osmanthus) to the Zhuijiang jetty where I boarded a ferry for beautiful Yangshuo. The cruise meanders around the soaring ethereal mountains and their near-perfect reflection in the crystal-clear water. Minute fishing villages appeared to exist at the bottom of these densely forested green peaks, and we must have passed countless fishermen on their rickety bamboo rafts, clad in Asian conical hats. The cruise down this
built in the Yuan Dynasty over 700 years ago, and over Zongzi – bamboo wrapped rice and bean paste dumplings – looking down from above where a cascading set of terraces formed a ‘dragon’s backbone’ from the ridge of many hills, I was told of the Yao’s daily life, superstitions and dedication to following their ancestors’ norms. Remarkably, and unlike the speed I witnessed in Shanghai, nothing of theirs has changed for centuries. China moves at such an alarming rate, that one can’t help feel but destined to miss out on its latest development. We in the financially-hit West fear this: will we forever be behind? Only time will tell. But five days in China did at least teach me one thing: that no matter how it evolves, its inhabitants, a near 1.5 billion, are just as keen to hold on to what makes this old civilisation one of the most bewitching in the world today. Let’s hope they never let go.

HILLSIDE BEACH CLUB, TURKEY Don’t let the ‘all-inclusive’ label fool you; this isn’t your standard all-in hotel. For starters, the locale of the club is simply breathtaking – set against mighty hills, the apartments overlook the glistening blue water of the Mediterranean Sea. In the evening, which is when we both arrived and left, it is arguably more akin to a twinkling Turkish village than a luxury 330-room resort. Morning came arm-in-arm with the sun, and with it a fresh view of the club. Staircasing down the hill, the apartments were clearly designed to be as unobtrusive as possible. The enticing beach has its blue flag – a prestigious accolade awarded to only the most eco and beautiful beaches in the world – flying high, whilst the hotel’s
speedboats, catamarans and yachts float on the calm, clear water. You can’t help but want to dive in – good news for those looking for an active break. What’s more, with three restaurants to choose from, the food is as good as the view. As expected, on the menu are plenty of grilled fish dishes, as well as nutritious omelettes and fresh salads. Two of the restaurants offer à la carte dining; Pasha on the Bay is open for a light breakfast, with a Mediterranean menu in the evening, and Beach Bar serves a lighter lunchtime buffet and scrumptious Italian cuisine for supper. There are also plenty of activities to keep kids (both big and small) occupied – think volleyball, yoga, windsurfing, sailing and a range of indulgent spa treatments

I
didn’t exactly have the typical introduction to Estate Agency. Ten years ago I was a professional golfer and now I’m the Richmond Group Director for Featherstone Leigh.
