inter has thawed and the weather is finally improving, and I’ve realised something big. I have always been resolute in my preference of autumnal fashion over summer style, but I have, in fact, been lying to myself. I’ve been pondering this lie over the past few chilly, enduring months, convincing myself that I enjoy being wrapped up, hidden away from the cold and, in all my originality, only wearing black. It is, I’ve realised, a very British trait to confer with friends that one would rather wear thick black tights and a thick black roll neck than bare any flesh. While I do like my winter threads, it does get a little tedious after the 24th week of wearing the same thing. This year I welcome summer fashion with open arms and have personally pored over our style guru, Charlotte Adsett’s fashion pages. Turn to page 26 to see her edit of the hottest spring trends to throw on this month.

You’ll need to head somewhere to wear your new seasonal wardrobe, so skim forward to page 12 for what’s on in the area this month, or to page 20 for my edit of the three family festivals for London’s most savvy sophisticates. We’ve also had the pleasure of interviewing the revered Dame Judi Dench in the wake of her newest film, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. She talks Bond, India and the upcoming election (see page 16). We have our usual wealth of beauty, interiors, food and property content to enjoy. So flick, read and enjoy this issue, and I will see you next month, by which time I will have replaced my all black uniform for a vibrant set of threads. u

products for the famed art institution has now become its best-selling merchandise. But this is Alter just warming up. “Everything I work on leads to more ideas to explore,” he explained. Preferring to mix, match and clash colours, Alter clarified that what excites him the most is the process of seeing which combination of colours “draw your eye in; are vibrant and impactful.” Alter said that his work “is the result of collecting elements and overlaying them in order to imply a world without borders – that’s how I like it.” It’s no surprise, then, that the designer lives in a world without borders. While the now London-based Alter will never forget his Israeli roots, he “fell in love with [his] wife and the city” while completing his MA in graphic design at London

napologetically bold, Chiswick’s Yoni Alter has been making waves in the global art scene. Since stamping his brightly coloured mark on the design sphere, the Jerusalem-born graphic artist has been captivating audiences ever since his 2014 debut at London’s Kemistry Gallery. Alter’s signature? Vivid graphic illustrations and multi-coloured cityscapes. The 34-year-old’s simple-but-powerful on-going series, Shapes of Cities, has cemented Alter's status as master of dimension, as he employs a unique stencilling technique to create depth in his 2D screen prints. Taking the city’s most iconic structures, the designer cuts to-scale stencils and layers them. Creating a fascinating, kaleidoscopic
rainbow, his work demands attention. And attract attention he has. In addition to designing the 24m-long art banner that covered all of the double decker buses in Shoreditch, Alter also caught the eye of the Tate. His range of

College of Communication. “Being such an impressive place, in so many different ways, you can't help but to get inspired. It’s a world in and of itself.” And just like that London became Alter’s muse. As the inner city gave him the electricity and excitement he sought, the natural beauty of Ealing’s “quiet and leafy” surroundings gave him the space he needed to ignite his intricate creative thought-process. To this day both aspects of the town he calls home allow him to incorporate the cultural and visual aspects of London into his work. But what’s next, we asked. “The dream project would be the largest possible wall, but I’m currently developing a new series that I hope will get as much love as Shapes of Cities.” Well, with that in mind, he’s certainly one Chiswick resident to watch. yoniishappy.com

ame Judi Dench loves a challenge. Recently turned 80, she continues to take on starring roles and new ideas. She’s currently gracing the sequel to the surprise movie hit, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, as the love interest of the equally cool Bill Nighy. And this month she’s treading the boards at the Donmar Warehouse in The Vote, a play set in a fictional polling station, to be broadcast live on TV on the evening of May 7. It’s the next step in a career remarkable for its longevity and successs. One of the country’s biggest stars of the stage and screen, Judi has been an actress for 60 years including four decades on the British stage for the National Shakespeare Company and the Old Vic.
Judi’s numerous films include 10 Baftawinning performances plus seven Oscar nominations and a win for a hilarious eight-minute performance as Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love. Not one to be typecast, she has owned numerous roles from her wickedly nuanced performance as the vengeful lesbian in Notes on a Scandal to her heartbreaking portrayal of crumbling dementia in Iris. And of course her recruitment as M in 1995’s Bond blockbuster, Goldeneye, added new fans to her audience for her convincing role as 007’s superior, sadly succumbing to a fatal end in last instalment, Skyfall. Judi’s latest film, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, centres on an eclectic gathering of retirees, eager for a last sip of the summer wine amongst the colourful commotion of India’s Jaipur.

for 50 years or so
Having appeared in the first episode, Dench was obviously considered essential for the second. “One moment I was at home, the next, on a plane back to Rajasthan,” she laughs. “I don’t even remember anyone asking me. But I was so grateful to go back.” Why does she think The First Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was such an unexpectedly big hit? “I think probably it was quite refreshing to have something that was about people our age who are all struggling and trying to not fit into a slot and not be taken for granted. To do something daring and defy what’s happening to them.” As one who defies her age over and over again, she might have something, there. Judi also enjoyed working with much of the original cast, including fellow Dame of the British Empire, Maggie Smith and American silver fox, Richard Gere. “You don’t have to worry about making a fool of yourself in front of them because they’ve seen you making a fool of yourself for 50 years or so,” she says.
The location of the film affected her profoundly, too. “The whole experience of India changed me,” she says. “The one thing I didn’t have to act about Evelyn was her passion for the country and the people. I just was bewitched by it.” Best Exotic Marigold Hotel director John Madden has called Judi ‘box office gold’. But famously, she doesn’t take her success for granted. “I’ve always been afraid the next role isn’t going to come,” she says. “Trevor Nunn once came to wish me luck and said, ‘why are you always in tears on a first night?’ I said, ‘it’s because I never think I’m going to be employed again.’ “And although it’s been
19 Chiswick_May15_Judi_Dench.indd 19
quite a jokey, light-hearted thing to say, in the depths of me, I still have that fear and perhaps it’s very healthy to be like that. Perhaps I don’t want it to change.” What Judi doesn’t like is being offered parts that are just like the ones she’s just played, which happens all the time. “I don’t want to play somebody like the last person I’ve played – I want to play a person who’s as different as possible.” she says. The many roles she has taken are testament to her love of trying something new. Judi’s life has revolved around acting and she met her late husband, Michael when she was playing Portia in The Merchant of Venice in 1971. Their 42 -year-old daughter Finty will be joining Judi, playing her daughter in James Graham’s new play The Vote at Donmar Warehouse on election night. Judi’s last appearance at the Donmar was in the 1970s. The play has a huge ensemble cast of about 50 actors, including Mark Gatiss, Catherine Tate and Timothy West. It’s set in a fictional London polling station in the last hour-and-a-half before polls close and will be screened on More 4 at that exact time on election day itself, from 20:30 to 22:00. Judi will play a voter who arrives at the polling station with her daughter to join the the ‘diverse, diligent and often hilarious individuals’ who turn out to vote. No doubt Judi will be as convincing as ever – no part is too difficult for this amazing Dame.

Despite popularity growing rapidly, the festival has managed to defend its reputation as one of the most sophisticated, family-friendly events of the year. Snapping up the Best Festival Activity Award in 2013 from the UK festival awards, the 2015 timetable of extra curricular activities is continuing in the same vein. Feeling delicate after a heavy night on the Pimms and prosecco (yes, it’s that kind of festival)? There’s plenty to help refresh and revive you for the evening ahead. VAULT COUTURE Wo r d s S T E P H A N I E K I N G
ault Couture’s purpose is exactly how it reads: to store your high fashion pieces in a safe, climatecontrolled, air-purified vault in Central London, preserving their integrity for weeks, months, or even years to come. But Vault Couture is not simply a glorified spare room; it is a revolutionary clothing concierge service. How so? The innovative company founded by Mounissa Chodieva, a perennially jet-setting business executive, also promises same day collection and delivery. Think of it as your personal Net-A-Porter, but you’re shopping your own wardrobe and using Vault Couture’s premier couriers to escort your exclusive designs to wherever in the world you need them to be. So as you whisk off to far-off destinations on a moment’s notice, your Chanel and Christian Dior can, too. This month marks the first anniversary of the launch of Vault Couture’s Virtual Vault, an iPad-/iPhonefriendly, interactive software allowing its clients to neatly see their stored items (and styling advice) on an easy-to-use digital platform. With a range of packages to suit your storing requirements, preserving your high value items in pristine condition has never been simpler. Discreet, intelligent, stress-free. Now that's high vaultage. u

NATURAL ENHANCEMENT The leading permanent make up specialists Wo r d s A b s o l u t e ly
How did you first get involved in the field of semi-permanent make up? I was first and foremost an advanced beauty therapist but I had my own award-winning salon which led me to perform cosmetic artistry. Working alongside leading surgeons propelled me to launch Natural Enhancement - an embodiment of all I have learnt. Why get some natural enhancement? Everyone over the age of 30 will start to lose the shape and colour of their features. We restore the natural borders and shades back into the areas that have aged and faded. Gone are the days of harsh tattooing, what we offer is very different. Soft hues are placed into the skin with the gentle application of pigment so that people’s faces look good naked – essential for busy individuals who want easy beauty. You are also one of the most prestigious training schools in the country, how long have you been teaching for? My passion is and will continue to be to raise the standard of my industry. For over ten years I have been passing my skills onto my students. I work to help them develop them into conscientious individuals and it’s so rewarding!
Lip Talk
Which treatment do you think makes the biggest difference? If you see the before and after pictures on our website you will see that any of our treatments can transform someone’s face. This restores their self-esteem and it’s their new-found confidence that makes the biggest difference. u

Doctor Who? Absolutely talks to the man behind many a face, Dr Khan I n t e r v i e w A B S O L U T E LY ABSOLUTELY: How did the Harley Street Clinic come about? DR KHAN: My wife was working in medically-based skincare and had a room in Harley Street where she saw celebrity and media clients. She suggested I start working with her one day a week to supply the demand for botox and dermal fillers. Within six months we had a full time clinic and have gone from strength to strength. AM: What is the philosophy of the clinic? DK: A light touch is our philosophy. We want you to look your best. We offer everything from a facial to a full facelift, give honest advice and never let you overdo it! AM: How do you differentiate between cases when considering surgical or nonsurgical procedures? DK: There are lots of factors to consider, including your lifestyle, health and what you want to achieve. For instance, if you have a young child to look after, full on laser resurfacing that makes you look scary for
ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES
Chiswick_May15_Helena Coggan.indd 42
a week is unacceptable. We spend time during your consultation talking about your expectations and how we can achieve them. AM: Are there different benefits to both? DK: Sometimes only surgery will achieve the result you want, but some people do not want surgery, or their health may not permit it. There are always ways of improving the skin’s tone, texture and quality, and that can be as valuable as full on surgery. Ultimately, it’s the assessment that’s vital to a happy ending. AM: What is the longest surgery you’ve ever performed? DK: Fat removal and body sculpting can be take up to four hours or more. AM: If someone is determined to get a procedure, but in your expert opinion it’s not necessary, how do you deal with it? DK: We don’t do it and explain why. Unfortunately, someone somewhere may perform the procedure.
AM: In you opinion, what public figure has used surgery well? And, what about a celebrity who has taken things to far…? DK: There are many examples of good and bad surgery; Sharon Osborne for instance has openly admitted to having surgery and has looked amazing, however she may have gone a little far now. People who have had great surgery often do not admit to it. Gillian Taylforth is an example of good and appropriate procedures, she has returned to EastEnders looking younger than the son she is supposed to have given birth to 45 years ago. Gillian has had Silhouette Soft Sutures and regular facials with us. AM: What is the most common request you get? DK: To lift jowls and reduce forehead lines and crows feet. AM: What exciting innovations and techniques are you excited about? DK: Silhouette Soft Sutures have revolutionised minimally-invasive facelifting. AM: How do you stay discreet posttreatment? DK: There may be some bruising and swelling, so plan your treatments in advance so that you can keep out of sight if you want to. AM: What’s the most bizarre request you’ve ever had for surgery? DK: Toe amputation to make the foot fit into designer shoes – totally inappropriate! The Anti-Ageing Show London takes place on the 16th and 17th of May at Olympia. ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION Prioritisation, in the end, IS THE BRIDGE
BETWEEN MOTIVATION
and success
Take this scenario, which is something I've witnessed many times over the years. A person is well aware that to get the body they want they need to up their weekly training programme, yet they cannot commit because life gets in the way. Suddenly they have a big event coming up such as a birthday or a wedding, and despite life getting busier in the lead up to said event, they somehow manage to make time to work out frequently in the gym. How? It's simple. They prioritise their workouts to achieve their goals. Now, of course, sacrifices may have to be made. Making sure to get out of work on time, earlier nights, health-conscious eating and cutting down on alcohol. Even waking up earlier for a pre-work gym session. In short, exercise has become an important part of their routine. u K E Y P O I NTS
PRIORITISATION IS KEY Regular exercise is vital for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, yet most of us still aren’t active enough. How do we make a change?
I
P r i o r iti sati o n have been helping people achieve their goals for the best part of a decade. My job is to motivate and guide people, but sometimes, as is the case for all in my profession, people slip through the net and don't achieve the results they want. This can be for many reasons: a lack of self-confidence or self-motivation, no time or even just not knowing how to go about making a change. That said, sometimes, even those eager to make a change don't
get to where they want to be. Most people do realise the importance of exercise to achieve their goals, but life can get in the way. Whatever the commitment or excuse for finding the time to exercise and eat well, there are ways to turn this around, and that's through prioritisation and having realistic expectations. Even personal trainers can fluctuate with their own personal progression unless we keep ourselves driven and working towards specific targets. Prioritisation, in the end, is the bridge between motivation and success.
47 B&C_May15_Park Club.indd 47
• It's not just what you give up but what you take up. Find something you enjoy and do your best to prioritise it. •Plan your exercise sessions a week in advance. Book yourself onto classes and make sure you stick to them. •Find a training buddy. Support can only drive you more, and a little competition never hurt anyone. • Book a session or two with a personal trainer. We can give you tailored plans to help you achieve the best results. • Commitment is key, so stick to your plan and keep prioritising on the days you have allocated. • Above all, find time to relax. If you're sticking to your plan, a little time off will only make it all feel the more satisfying. ● VOJI N S OK K I C Health and Fitness Manager, The Hogarth Health Club, Airedale Avenue, W4; thehogarth.co.uk

A Great Match Wine and food pairings for the month of May B y J a n e Pa r k i n s o n
Crab cakes
he succulent and fruity nature of crab meat makes it a no-brainer match with dry and crisp whites or dry and fruity rosés. When it’s served fishcake-style, though, the wine needs to be especially fresh to cut through the richness of the oil in which it’s been deep-fried, but also needs to be fruity enough to match the chilli sauce that’s often served on the side. Austrian’s signature white grape is a great option because it’s dry, zingy and fruity and is fantastic value for money, Signature Grüner Veltliner 2013 £6.99, Morrisons. T
Roast l a mb
amb is actually one of the most versatile meats when it comes to pairing with different wines. When it’s roasted with rosemary and garlic you could go all out with a big Tuscan red like a Brunello di Montalcino or you could try a delicious blend of grapes from the south of France, where you can pick up a serious bargain. This one, made from Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre grapes, is so fruity and herbal it’s crying out for roast lamb, Tesco Finest St-Chinian 2013, £8.99. L
Chocol ate & nuts
here are far too many scare stories out there about matching wine with chocolate, but it can be really a successful pairing, and both with dry and sweet wines. However, when it comes to milk or dark chocolate covered in nuts, or honeycomb, or both, there is one hedonistic match, and that’s a Rutherglen Muscat from Australia. For a gooey but fresh one that’s full of honeyed, toffee loveliness, try Campbell’s Rutherglen Muscat, £12.49, Waitrose. T

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW Bo Ssam pork belly is a WINNING COMBINATION of apple and pork and the FIERY MARINADE KEPT IT CLASSIC but with a CLEVER KOREAN TWIST
Seoul Food

– thighs or wings – served with spicy Gochujang Red sauce and Jinjuu Black Soy sauce for dipping. The meat and batter combo was succulent and deliciously salty. That said, the only thing making it ‘Korean fried chicken’ were the aforementioned sauces. We then tucked into a platter of Bo Ssam pork belly. Twice-cooked Black Berkshire pork belly came generously coated in a dweng-jang and gochujang glaze and served with a side of apple cabbage kimchi. Taking the winning combination of apple and pork and adding in the fiery marinade kept it classic but with a clever Korean twist. Then we tucked into a bibimbap bowl; this traditional dish is comprised of fresh white rice, seasonal vegetables and your choice of meat – we went for Bulgogi marinated beef fillet – before being topped off with a fried egg and a drizzle with tangy Gochujang sauce. It could’ve done with a little more sauce, but the thinly sliced beef was tender, tasty and worked beautifully with the different elements of the bowl. We skipped dessert, which I regret in hindsight, but after such a feast of fried and fiery dishes, our stomachs could take no more. I guess I’ll just have to go back. u

aving explored the many culinary delights of New Malden, the Korean area of London, I was a little skeptical about eating at Jinjuu. I like authentic Korean, but I knew not to expect that here. Translated, the Kingly Street Korean restaurant's moniker means Pearl, a seemingly unrelated name but pretty nonetheless. The inaugural restaurant from celebrity chef Judy Joo has brought refined, hybrid Korean food to the centre of London. We started our feast with the kong bowl; a full bowl of steamed edamame topped with the most moreish Jinjuu chilli panko mix
imaginable. The Sae-woo pops – skewered crispy fried prawn cakes – were, sadly, a little flavourless, but the accompanying gochujang mayonnaise was totally addictive. The Jinjuu carnitas fries were ordered our of sheer curiosity: the menu's description reads, “Korean-Mexican Disco Fries,” but left little to be desired. They were nothing more than soggy chips slathered in too much kimchi and topped, bizarrely, with grated mature cheddar. The tuna tartare however, was beautiful. Slices of raw tuna came seasoned with soy and ginger, and finished with jalapeno and shallot salsa. Then came the bigger plates: we began by sharing the signature Jinjuu chicken, The Jin Chick. A portion of Korean-fried chicken

hy would you go to Gstaad in summer? I had been posed this question before setting off on my brief, mid-July sojourn to the idyllic Alpine village, and during the train journey from Berne airport through the picturesque Swiss landscape, I had time to ponder it. True, it was a few degrees cooler here than the London I’d left behind (typical) and the chalets did seem to have something amiss without their snow-covered roofs and icicles, but Gstaad outside of ski season is certainly not without its charms. For one thing, Switzerland is visually stunning in summer. The alpine peaks are still dusted in snow but the land flourishes with spring flowers. Everything is a lush shade of green, and great plumes of cloud seem to tumble down the mountains. The two-hour train journey simply flew by, with the glorious views providing ample distraction.

Gstaad’s motto is: ‘Come up, slow down’ alluding to its leisurely pace and high altitude. Actress Julie Andrews, who owns a holiday home in the area, describes it as the “last paradise in a crazy world.” Along with Andrews, a plethora of famous dignitaries have chosen Gstaad as their holiday getaway, and looming over the centre of town is the retreat of choice for the world’s elite: the famous Gstaad Palace hotel. Chugging into the quaint train station, a chauffeur in immaculate Gstaad Palace uniform doffs his peaked cap and imperceptibly takes my cases from me. A lift to the hotel is welcome but somewhat superfluous; the Palace is mere minutes away and is visible from practically every angle with its castle-like structure and extravagant towers. The Palace may look imposing on the outside, but once inside it’s as cosy and intimate as any alpine chalet. The interior decor is a tasteful Swiss palette of subtle check, muted colours and traditional wooden

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST furniture. A small balcony jutting off my spacious bedroom provides views across the village and a personal sanctuary in which to sit back, take in the sublime surroundings, and relax. Gstaad Palace opened in December 1913 and, following a hugely successful inaugural skiing season, the building was extended the following year. The hotel has survived two World Wars and ensuing economic turmoil, and has been managed by the Scherz family for nearly 80 years. After the Second World War, international music stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Édith Piaf and Louis Armstrong held exclusive concerts at the Palace, and the hotel has attracted Hollywood stars and royalty throughout its history, welcoming everyone from Paul McCartney to Princess Diana. Rumour has it that Michael Jackson, friend of Palace regular Liz Taylor (whose husband-at-the-time Richard Burton said they “only felt home in Gstaad”), enquired about purchasing the Palace, simply because he “liked the castle.” The hotel is still synonymous with celebrity clientele and there’s a distinct air of
glamour to it, particularly inside the retro Greengo night club, which opened in the 1970s. But the Palace embodies a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, and it’s this plus an unrivalled personal service that keeps guests – celebrity or otherwise – coming back year after year. But what is Gstaad’s appeal outside of skiing season? Well, for starters, summer may be the one time you’re physically able to stay in the Palace – its winter season sells out months in advance. However, another attraction is that, unlike other alpine resorts, Gstaad is very much open over summer, and there’s a host of cultural and sporting activity. Most famous is the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open tennis tournament, which
The Palace embodies a RELAXED, intimate ATMOSPHERE that keeps GUESTS COMING BACK year after year takes place in late July and this year celebrates its centenary. The Palace is a family-friendly place, hosting a kid’s summer tennis tournament and offering family-friendly packages throughout the season, including a delightful Willy Wonka-inspired excursion with a trip to legendary chocolate factory Maison Cailler. For active types who can pry themselves away from the Palace’s restaurants, bar, pretty terrace area or award-winning spa, there’s an Olympicsized outdoor heated pool (one of the first to be built in Switzerland), an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, Pilates studio and gym. The mild summer temperatures and majestic views are perfect for nature lovers who can indulge in woodland walks, hikes and biking, plus a highly-recommended outing to the nearby Glacier 3000, which has even more high-altitude rambles and simply breathtaking views. For adrenaline junkies (or hard-to-please teenagers) the Palace can organise high-octane activities like paragliding, jeep safaris and even river rafting.
59 Chiswick_May15_ TRAVEL.indd 59
Another must-do is a visit to the Palace-owned Walig Hut, a traditional Swiss cabin 1,700 metres above the village of Gsteig, originally built in 1786. With little but the dulcet chimes of cowbells for company, Walig Hut makes a whimsical lunchtime or dinner excursion (traditional Swiss fondue is cooked by a private chef, followed by a shot of fiery Kirsch) or even a romantic overnight stay. Condé Nast Traveller awarded it Best Wilderness Hotel in 2013, and it’s easy to see why. One of my last excursions organised by the Palace was a horse drawn carriage ride around Gstaad. Our guide (born and bred in Gstaad) was infectiously enthusiastic, not to mention thoroughly knowledgeable. As the afternoon began to give way to evening, we trotted through the pristine town centre, where cars are forbidden and the Chanel and Louis Vuitton boutiques are ensconced in pretty, traditional chalet designs. Outside of the centre, at the grassy feet of the mountains, our guide told stories of growing up in Gstaad and pointed out her childhood home. In a moment of utter tranquillity, I deemed Gstaad to be the most romantic, idyllic and serene place on earth. So, why would you visit it in summer? My answer is, why would you not? Rates start from £348 (490CHF) in a Single Classic room (per room and night including half-board, all taxes and service) and from £525 (740CHF) for a Double Small Room. WHAT IS IT?
T
he Vineyard Spa is, unsurprisingly, a haven for Epicureans. The hotel and spa is owned by the Michael family, who also preside over the Peter Michael winery in Knights Valley in California. The hotel is inspired by the Judgement of Paris, a famous wine tasting in 1976 that saw Californian wine surpass classic French wines in a blind tasting held by British wine merchant, Steven Spurrier. The hotel displays a large-scale painting of the notorious tasting, also by the same title, which united some of the wine world’s most influential wine writers and journalists. The hotel prides itself on its impressive private art collection, as well as its 3,000 bins, with around 100 of them available to taste by the glass.

THE RESTAURANT
he “5 Bubbles” spa is nice, but it’s definitely not the hotel’s focal point. The swimming pool isn’t great for swimming in, as it’s round and quite small, but the palm tree-framed atrium in which it is set is glorious on a sunny day. The treatment rooms, although airy and light, are equally unexceptional, which is by no means a comment on the service you’ll receive: The therapists are welcoming and thorough, with customer service clearly at the forefront of their training. We went all-out, first indulging in a pedicure, which incorporated paraffin wax treatment and high quality Mavala nail polishes. Then came the massage; let's ignore the irritating, predictable muzak, because the masseuse was competent and responded to each and every knot in my back. This, combined with the delicious Darphin oils used was so good and relaxed me so much that I had to take a nap afterwards.
O
ne of the best things about the hotel is the restaurant. Go all out and opt for the wine tasting menu; each delectable course comes with a sip of Californian wine and a sip of French wine so you can partake in your very own version of the Judgement of Paris. Head chef Daniel Galmiche believes, “Eating out is one of the greatest pleasures of life. I have made it my mission to communicate this.” There’s no doubt that he’s succeeded in his quest, even for my vegetarian companion, who was resigned to the belief that French chefs just don’t do vegetarian food. Not the case, as the seven-course menu was altered to suit her tastes. Meat or no meat, we were both very impressed.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO LOCALLY AS A FAMILY?
“We’ve discovered The Victoria Pub just near Richmond Park, in Sheen. Shhhh....don’t tell anyone, but the food there is amazing!”
WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO START AN ONLINE KID’S BOUTIQUE? “Well there was that sudden realisation that I would have to take my two out of control under-five-year-olds, in my car, to Selfridges to buy some of the brands that I liked. Just the idea of parking my car, chasing them around the department store and then the commute home was enough to fill me with fear. So, Alex and Alexa was born. Now their bedroom is the changing room...”
Alex Theophanous
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN RICHMOND?
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT?
“Launching Global Kids Fashion Week in 2013 was a massive success. It took 6 months of planning, and a team of young talented people working all the hours, but in the end we created and launched a 40 minute runway show that was streamed globally to our customer base, showcasing the coolest kid’s fashion on the planet!”
WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP FOR BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY?
“It would be easy to mention the beauty of Richmond Park, so I won’t. I love that I can drop my kids off at the German School in Petersham, and then walk up the road to Richmond Station. Not perfect in the winter, but it is WOW in the summer.”
“Recruit the best management team that you can trust, then empower them to run the show”

Advice for students and parents on picking the best kind of holiday tuition before exam season starts
he epithet of last month’s column focusing on the T need for balance in the build up to stressful public exams, should not be lost in their aftermath. Post exam leave and the long summer break should absolutely provide respite from arduous hours in the library. Of course steam must be let off and of course heady summer nights will be at the forefront of most teenagers’ priorities. And rightly so – they have worked incredibly hard (we hope) and should be rewarded for their efforts. I still vividly remember the post-GCSE holiday that my friends and I were let loose on… it was almost considered a rite of passage. Eleven weeks, give or take, is a considerable chunk of free time. Having spent so much time focusing on academics, it should be used as valuable period to align interests and skills. Encourage your child to balance their socialising with time to be productive and achieving – whether undertaking work experience, attending a sports camp, visiting a language school or perhaps becoming involved in local voluntary work. By broadening their horizons in this way, teenagers will not only learn the hugely valuable skill of balancing work and play, but with their achievements their confidence will flourish and they will relish the parties even more.
Slow Learner
A new movement that says a real education can’t be rushed is gaining ground Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e
R
emember the slow food movement? A reaction against mass-produced, air-freighted food led to a minor revolution. Well, now we have slow education. One of its promoters is Mike Grenier, an English teacher and housemaster at Eton who cofounded the movement. Grenier says: “It struck me that the model of processing people through exams with narrow ideas about teaching, was mimicking the worst aspects of a McDonald’s production line.” He became interested in creating a model for education that makes time for creative teaching and learning. It is less about teaching to the test and more about allowing children to think independently. It advocates long-term projects to allow children to experiment – and sometimes to fail as they learn. Matthew Moss High School, a mixed comprehensive in Rochdale, signed up to the movement 18 months ago and so far, it’s a great success. Three lessons a week have been freed up in years 7
79 Chiswick_May15_Education.indd 79
and 8 to give students time to develop projects they are really interested in. At the end, a viva examination explores their knowledge and understanding. The school has also developed a scheme whereby younger students volunteer to attend classes given by sixth-form pupils. The topics they teach aren’t connected to the exam syllabus; they are just of personal interest to the student teacher. Some critics query whether such ‘project-based learning’ is a return to the bad old days of the 1970s when children were left with gaping holes in their factual knowledge. But Grenier robustly refutes this, saying that slow education is avowedly not anti-academic. “We’re not progressive,” says Grenier. “The academic is fundamental. We also believe in teaching people how to do stuff. It is about producing self-reliant children and adults. In fact, it could be seen as highly academic, since it values learning for its own sake rather than for where it could lead.” sloweducation.co.uk

y childhood dream was to be a criminal lawyer. Coming from a family of lawyers and with an uncle featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's “most successful lawyer” with 245 successive murder acquittals, I thought it seemed like a very exciting job! After finishing school, I went on to do a degree in Hospitality Management before giving in to my passion for property. Having moved house a number of times during my childhood, I recall the days of house hunting with my parents as well as the exciting build of one of our homes. My dad often tells me that one of my most used phrases as a child, particularly while looking out of the car window was “you could do a lot with that house”! Having grown up in Dublin’s fair city, I made the exciting move to London and am now into my seventh year with Bective in Brook Green. The area reminds me a lot of Ireland, with its strong sense of community and village-like feel. We see a lot of young families drawn to the great schools and safe atmosphere, as well as young professionals attracted to the blend of boutique stores, gastro pubs and great transport links. For more than six years, I have watched the market go from strength to strength with prices growing each year and the price per square foot now exceeding £1,100. I am very confident the Brook Green market will continue to prosper, provided sellers listen to honest and experienced local agents.
grew up in a picture postcard village called Brill on the Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire border. It comes complete with windmill and is well known for being the hideout of the Great Train Robbers. Growing up in the countryside fed my love for animals, and when I was small I wanted to be a vet, anything that stood still long enough would be bandaged like a mummy in no time! Before I worked in estate agency, I ran a livery yard full of very high maintenance and expensive event horses. After breaking too many bones, and getting fed up with being cold, wet and covered in mud all the time, I decided to move to London and see what opportunities it held. I’d always had an interest in houses, particularly listed and period properties; the history, stories and lives that have been lived in them fascinate me. Knowing this, my brother, who was working in recruitment at the time, sent me for an interview with a lovely independent firm in Fulham. They offered me the job as lettings negotiator and it went from there! I have worked in Brook Green for the past five years and loved seeing it grow and prosper during that time. I love the village feel the most. In Brook Green you can easily forget you are in London. I treasure walking my labrador, Tam, on the Green at lunchtime and meeting lots of familiar faces doing the same thing. It really is a wonderful place to work. The current market is very exciting, we have lots of serious applicants looking to move quickly, the market is fast paced, properties are in demand and prices are on the rise. Now is the time to strike!

Most satisfying transaction I’ve had: We were one of four agents instructed to sell a stunning period property on Ravenscourt Road, which we got despite its Hammersmith and Fulham postcode. From the outset we were thoroughly proactive and we ended up selling the property, for a healthy sum.
I never thought I’d see: 2 Kew Bridge Road become a collection of luxury apartments. I used to drive past the building when it was office space, and it even used to be a roller disco! Today, Albany Homes have created an impressive riverside development, which sold out in its first release.
Most interesting property I’ve been involved with: A quirky mews style townhouse in the heart of Old Brentford, which was built onto the side of an old coach house. Inside, the architecture was stunning - it had beautiful exposed brickwork and high beams that had been reclaimed from Canary Wharf.
Finest Property Showcase St Mary’s Grove, W4. £2,500,000. A magnificent five bedroom home in the heart of Grove Park. We sold it years ago to the current owners, and now it’s back on our books.

The INSIDE SCOOP of NEWS in your area Edmund Cude have a new brand:
E
PORTICO dmund Cude is one of the
oldest names in the London property business – but it has now launched under its new name: Portico. It’s fresh, relevant and distinctive and will be deployed across the network of 11 central London offices alongside a new fleet of black Mercedes-Benz company cars. And with the new change comes an entirely new customer proposition. Edmund Cude was entirely lettings focused until three years ago when the company acquired big-name Bushells, but the new brand will be known for both lettings and sales, and will offer both landlords and vendors a range of bespoke packages providing services they simply can’t get from other estate agents. In autumn last year, the company spoke to over 1,000 existing and potential customers to find out what they loved and hated about selling and renting property. Customers particularly liked the insightful approach that Edmund Cude took to helping landlords understand their obligations and vendors understand their local market dynamics.

But landlords often expressed frustration at having to pay expensive contractors to resolve minor maintenance issues in their rental properties. So these values of approachability, insightful property knowledge and the creation of a team of twenty in-house tradesmen, became the cornerstones of Portico’s new proposition. Edmund Cude has served as the company’s moniker for nearly two centuries, and Bushells has been around for nearly 80 years, but in a crowded marketplace of companies typically bearing the owner’s surname, they wanted something fresh.

Associate Director of John D Wood & Co, Richmond 020 8940 6611; johndwood.co.uk Why this area? Richmond is one of the greenest boroughs, and is both diverse and vast. Consequently it offers a wide variety of different types of architecture, resulting in different challenges every day! What is your company ethos? To serve the best interests of our clients at all times, to provide sound advice and a professional service and generate the best possible price for our clients. What are your favourite properties right now? A four storey Georgian gem on Montpelier Row in Marble Hill with ten bedrooms, and a development of nine apartments in Mortlake opposite the Mortlake Brewery. Plans have been submitted to develop the Brewery and the site, so these flats will be a canny buy. Market predictions around the General Election? The market under £2 million is currently performing strongly with properties above this selling at a slightly slower pace. It is a good time to start house hunting whilst properties are sensibly priced and there is less competition in the marketplace.

ake a look at the unremarkable property details of this three bedroom Victorian house in South London and very little jumps out, apart from maybe its slightly shabby interior. And even that’s not too surprising – after all, the house is in the boho neighbourhood of Poets’ Corner near Herne Hill. “It’s one of those areas where a TV executive will live next to a wood cutter who will live next door to an up-and-coming singer,” says Anthony Shoring of local agent Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward. He says this property is generating plenty of online and offline viewings since it was listed on portal, OnTheMarket.com. So given South London is awash with terraced houses like this, what’s all the fuss about? The answer is that houses of this size and price within walking distance of a tube are becoming rare these days. The million-pound period home market is rapidly making its way further and further south of the Thames. Poets’ Corner is a rack of around six
ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES
MOST POPULAR.indd 112
roads built between the twin forks of Railton Road and Dulwich Road north of Herne Hill. The area is called Poets’ Corner because most of the roads are named after bards – including Shakespeare, Milton and Chaucer. The developer who built these streets and houses during the late 19th century would be pleased. The area attracts the more artistic type including Claire Rayner’s son and restaurant critic Jay Rainer and singer La Roux, the ‘falsetto from the ghetto’ was brought up here. Poets’ Corner is popular not only because it’s a Conservation Area, but also because you’ve got one foot in Brixton and its reputation for urban grittiness, pop up
restaurants, famous bars and clubs, while having another in Herne Hill, which is rapidly becoming an outpost of Dulwich. “I’ve been selling homes here for eight years and the biggest joy of this area for me is Brockwell Park and its Lido, which is at the end of Chaucer Road,” says Anthony Shoring. He says one downside is that good local schools are a bit thin on the ground and that therefore the area attracts media types either without children or whose children have flown the nest. People like this, therefore, don’t need such large houses and tend to have more money at their disposal. This is all pushing up prices locally, and quite dramatically too. Houses like this have been going for nearer £1m but this property, because it needs money spending on it, is going for somewhat less. “If the property’s right around here then there’s huge demand,” says Anthony. “We sold a house on Barwell Road recently and, after first listing it for £800,000, it went for £827,000 after sealed bids.” He also says a similar property to that on Chaucer Road but in better condition went for £940,000 in Shakespeare Road recently, “which was new ground for us.”

Why does it matter who does my conveyancing?
D
elays can occur throughout the purchase process for a variety of reasons, many of which are outside the control of your conveyance. However, delays caused by conveyancers are very common, so it’s important to choose carefully. You are putting the biggest, most stressful financial commitment of your life in their hands and it is their attitude, experience and work ethic that will mean either your success or failure. Ensure that your conveyancer is not too busy with too many cases; that they use email rather than the post; that if they are going on holiday they will arrange adequate cover; and that they are experienced enough to pre-empt potential issues. Opt for a conveyancing firm that offers a no sale no fee guarantee and if in any doubt, ask your local agent for a recommendation.

A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE ON BUYING, RENTING AND SELLING HOMES.
WORMHOLT ROAD, W12 £1,950,000 FREEHOLD You will often see the expression "family house" crop up in estate agents descriptions. Clearly this property was designed and conceived by someone who understands family life because in addition to the four generous double bedrooms, the through reception, the three bathrooms, the frankly massive kitchen/family room and the 100 foot plus private garden.
