remember the days when I couldn't sleep in December, so excited was I about Christmas. Things may not be the same today – I can't get enough sleep now – but in this industry Christmas starts back in June. Yes, June. The first festive email popped into my inbox on the day I believe we experienced our first heatwave of the summer. With a fan blasting in my face, it was not exactly easy to get into the festive spirit back then.

The best candles to light your home this Christmas (p117)
But it does mean we have had plenty of time to prepare for the first Christmas Absolutely Cheshire – and we like to think there are plenty of surprises in store. We have festive chats with Rachel Lugo and the Queens of Cleans, see what's cooking at ABode Chester and The Lost & Found, and take a tour of the county to uncover the spots that really shout Christmas. We even suggest the best walks to go some way to working off all that excess. Christmas is time to be at home, so we present our second special this year dedicated to your safe space. Go on, veg out, you deserve it. Have a truly wonderful Christmas.

Chester local Ashley Rudd goes all out Christmas discussing markets, cards and festive tipples
M
y dad was in the army, so I grew up in Germany. The festive markets are huge over there and it was always a family tradition to bundle up against the snow and make the trip into town, mingle amongst the different independent stalls, eat festive food and warm ourselves up with Gluhwein. But, now I live in Chester, the same can be said here. I’ll be heading to the Chester markets with my family and I’m sure I’ll meet friends there throughout December too for a few glasses of fizz. THREE WRENS GIN
The markets have everything from locally made food and jewellery to handmade crafts – I always come away with bags of gifts and a guaranteed kilogram of cheese from The Cheshire Cheese Company. I have older relatives and friends across the country who still really appreciate receiving a Christmas card. I’m always conscious of being sustainable, so I prefer to support independent illustrators and small businesses. This year I’ll be sending cards from a local Ellesmere Port digital illustrator called Meg Tydd and her design business, Gemini Cove (instagram.com/ geminicovedesign). They are all made on recycled cards and she always makes sure to sell leftover stock from previous years instead of printing new cards to save on waste. Each card bundle has five separate festive designs and are all hand drawn. I’ll have my friends over to my place in Chester to get in the Christmas spirit this year: festive pyjamas, secret Santa and Christmas films too. Plus, my mum and dad always celebrate Christmas Eve in our Matalan X Alder Hey Children’s Charity, always with a festive tipple. This year, I’ll be making a “Mulled Apple Crumble” cocktail: 50ml Three Wrens Gin, Apple Crumble Edition, 200ml warm apple juice, and mulled wine spices. Three Wrens Gin is a family-run distillery based in the heart of Cheshire. A few of my friends do not drink so they will have an alcohol-free alternative. Cheers to that!
GEMINI COVE'S CARDS
In December I will be…
Christmas Wreath Making: I love traditional Christmas decorations, and there's a workshop at The Storyhouse that I’ll be attending.
As much as I love the festive period, I also love that we’re
on the way to entering 2024. I’ll spend that awkward time between Christmas and new year decluttering clothes and anything that no longer serves a purpose, ready to donate to local charities.
Everyone deserves a lovely Christmas , so in the weeks leading up I’ll be sure to make food and toy donations to the local charities in the area. It’s so easy to do.

LIFE of the HOUSEWIFE Cheshire’s glamorous businesswoman and mum-of-five Rachel Lugo on new beginnings, reality TV and the most wonderful time of the year B y N ATA L I E L I
T
here’s something special about a pocket of Cheshire that has kept Rachel Lugo firmly attached to the county – and it’s not just her part in ITVBe’s reality series, The Real Housewives of Cheshire. Born in a small village near Alderley Edge, the reality star still resides in the same community where she went to school and on the road her grandmother once lived. While her three sisters are dotted around the world – twin sister Katie lives in Gibraltar, and the other two in America and Brighton – Rachel hasn’t strayed far, remaining where her family have lived for more than 100 years. “We’re within walking distance of Alderley Edge – I live in a tiny village with no pub or shop. There’s a small church, it’s just beautiful as we’re surrounded by countryside,” she smiles. With horses, dogs, and five children – Francesca, 26; William, 24; Sophia, 21; Oliver, 18; Sienna, 12 and her 11-month-old granddaughter Saskia – life in her listed Cheshire farmhouse is busy and it’s been a joyous home for more than 20 years. Sadly, she tells me, it’s time to move on as she describes the challenging process of “decluttering” following her split from husband, John Lugo.
“My youngest daughter is at one of the local private schools, so I don’t want to move her. I’m on a show that means you’ve got to live in Cheshire,” she points out. “There’s no reason for me to look at moving away from Cheshire. “I’m very loyal,” continues the vivacious TV star, “obviously people in the public eye get offered all sorts of things, but I’ve had the same hairdresser for 19 years who lives in the village.” Rachel’s strong sense of grounding is evident and as she experiences great change – the end of a marriage, exploring new relationships and business ventures – clearing her head is imperative. “We have a forest called The Edge, which is stunning. It’s great to walk the dogs, and it’s so big that you can find bits where you don’t even see anyone. I remember being there as a child, wearing my wellies, getting leaves caught in them and playing on the tree branches. “As for going out in the evening,” she adds, “we’ve got great restaurants in the village, and I also love meeting friends in Knutsford. Now that we have Saskia, we visit spots like Chester Zoo and Tatton Park.” Rachel is no stranger to adversity and has garnered a loyal following of fans for her authenticity. Since joining the cast of housewives, she has been active in raising awareness about the effects of breast cancer after losing her mum, who moved to America when Rachel was nine. “Not everyone can like you and you learn that as you get older” “I brought mum back home on the Queen Mary 2 because she didn’t want to die in America,” Rachel says quietly. “She wanted to be back in the village, and she survived three weeks at home with all her grandchildren and children around her – it was lovely for her to be home.” As we chat Rachel’s genuine warmth and authenticity is apparent. She admits that joining the cast of The Real Housewives of Cheshire was not an obvious career choice. But the 48-year-old has become a firm and popular fixture on the show, which follows the lives of affluent women living in Cheshire. She was previously approached for season two, but “it wasn’t the right time”, and finally joined in 2017. Rachel tells me that she has developed a new strength and resilience since joining the programme. “You grow a thick skin, in my first season I really struggled with the fact that people had an opinion of the
way I looked and the way I behaved. I took everything to heart. Now it’s water off a duck’s back. Not everyone can like you and you learn that as you get older.” Image plays an integral part of the show and Rachel openly talks about the types of aesthetics work she has experienced from fillers to Botox. She has recently gone into business with Beyond Beautiful Wellness Clinic. “I’m all for beauty and making yourself feel and look as good as you can – and why not?” she shrugs. “The aesthetics lady who owns the clinic has done my face for the last three and a half years. She’s meticulous and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. I champion her and she said, ‘would you like to go into business?’ And I thought, well, I would because I like you and what you do.” Despite the glamorous depiction of Cheshire life, the accomplished businesswoman is keen to show that THE EDGE IS A FAVOURITE LOCAL SPOT
SHE'S LOOKING FORWARD TO CHRISTMAS
she’s not just a rich housewife, but in fact a self-confessed “country bumpkin” who often gets more excited by a pair of wellington boots than Jimmy Choos. She has been the co-owner of a construction and property management firm, renting luxury homes to high-net-worth individuals. She left the business after a public split with her ex-husband John in early 2019. “Hopefully in the next season you’ll see more of my business side,” she says. Alongside her beauty venture, Rachel has launched an interiors business, Lugo Loves, with ex-boyfriend Nick who she split from this year. Finding love again, Rachel reveals, is something she’d like. “I think living on your own for over four years you do become very independent. I wouldn’t say I particularly like being single. I’m a relationship person. It’s just tricky, isn’t it, especially when you’ve got children and work commitments.” With Christmas on the horizon, Rachel, a lifelong fan of the festive season, is gearing up for a ‘movie style’ celebration with glitzy table decorations, a large turkey in the Aga, and she’ll be toasting her granddaughter’s first Christmas. “We’ll have a drinks party to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. I try to attend midnight mass on Christmas Eve. My mum and dad are both buried at the nearby church, so I feel close to them, and that’s something I love to do.” Follow Rachel’s adventures @rachellugo1

BRIMSTAGE MAZE IS A FAMILY FAVOURITE
Q What were you doing before
launching Queens of Cleans?
Abbie: I was working in the property
industry and had worked as a manager in a local estate agent in Chester for over five years as well as Dubai. I loved the industry so knew working within property in some aspect would always remain. Kelly: I was a retail regional manager for Arcadia Group in London for years. I managed large teams of people across the capital and always wanted to remain in a team setting. Q What inspired you to go
into business together?
Abbie: We have been best friends for

over ten years and had an incredibly strong relationship. We trusted each other with our lives. Kelly: Absolutely, on top of that we knew our personalities would work really well together. We are a big believer in energies and together we knew we could create something really special. Q What gap in the market did you see? Abbie: For years, Chester has been a popular
tourist destination, but we had noticed that the rate in Airbnbs had shot up. With that, we realised there wasn’t a company in Chester offering Airbnb cleans specifically, so when we started the business specialising in this it really became our niche. Kelly: We also wanted to change the modern-day perception of cleaners and empower women to work for a brand to feel included, cared for and proud of. Q How does Queens of Cleans work? Abbie: At the moment, the business has
two sides – residential and commercial, meaning we work with individuals on house cleans or with businesses on larger scale

CHESTER CHRISTMAS MARKET CHRISTMAS SANTA DASH IS A HIGHLIGHT OF THE SEASON
THE CHESTER ROWS
“We knew we could create something really special together” and higher volume cleans. At the moment, we have a team of over 20 girls working for us, which has been an incredible journey. Q Is the festive season a busy one for you? Kelly: Christmas time is one of our busiest
months. Our household clients want to make sure their homes are clean and organised, ready to host, and our commercial clients want to make sure their spaces are ready for clients. Christmas time is stressful enough for people though, so having their weekly or fortnightly clean is essential, as it’s one less thing to worry about. Clean home, happy home!
BARLOUNGE WILL GET YOU INTO THE FESTIVE SPIRIT
Abbie: Our Airbnb cleans are booming at Christmas time, with cleans going ahead all throughout the season. Chester is a great destination to visit around Christmas time, so all the properties we clean for are back-toback with bookings, which is great for us! Q Will you get much time
off over Christmas?
Abbie: Christmas is one of our busiest times of
the year with Airbnbs needing to be cleaned seven days a week. We have guests checking in on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, so our team of cleaning specialists need to make sure the properties are sparkling clean ready for the next guests checking in. Kelly: With our business growing quickly, we have needed to employ a lady called Sian who is our Queens of Cleans manager. She manages any day-to-day communication the clients or employers have relating to the clean. She oversees all the Airbnb cleans and makes sure they are all ready and completed for the next guests. Sian has been with us from the start and it’s amazing that she can grow with us and we are able to offer her a managerial role. Q What places in or around Chester are
wonderful at this time of the year?
Abbie: There are so many gorgeous spots, but these are definitely a few of our favourites: Chester Christmas market; Christmas Santa Dash; Chester Christmas lights switch on; 12 Days of Christmas parade; Brunch with Santa at Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa; and The Christmas Tree Festival. Q Do you have a favourite restaurant? Kelly: BarLounge is one of our favourite
places to get in the Christmas spirit. They always make the best brewed mulled wine and the atmosphere is just lovely.
Q Describe your perfect Christmas Day… Abbie: Our families have always taught
us the value of Christmas. It’s not about opening lots of presents, it’s about being all together. Just a day full of love, health and happiness is all we can wish for. Q What can we expect from
Queens of Cleans in 2024?
Kelly: We have a few plans for 2024, but
our main priority is to expand in other areas of the UK and Ireland with the same model we currently have. queensofcleansco.co.uk

t’s safe to say that Knutsford is a true Cheshire gem. With pretty buildings, cobbled streets and a range of things to do, the market town is an ideal place to while away the hours, whether you’re visiting the independent shops, delving into the local history or stopping for something to eat or drink. This is a town with much to offer, enjoying links to notable people past and present including the writer Elizabeth Gaskell. If you haven’t been before, get planning your trip – it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed.
A TOWN WITH CLOUT
In the past, Knutsford was one of Cheshire’s most important towns. Legend has it that the Danish prince Cnut (also known as Canute), who in 1016 took the throne of England, forded a river here the same year, producing a crossing which became known as Canute’s Ford. The town grew to be a key player in the Cheshire landscape, but during the Industrial Revolution, other towns boomed while Knutsford held on to a historic charm.
In 1810, however, Elizabeth Gaskell, known for novels such as North and South, was born. When she was scarcely a year old, her mother died and she was taken to live with her aunt in Knutsford, where she was brought up. The fictional town of Cranford in her famous novel of the same name is based on the town, and Knutsford also features as Hollingford in Gaskell’s book Wives and Daughters. Numerous local buildings and streets are linked to Gaskell’s life and stories: the novelist is buried at Brook Street Chapel, for instance, and the Gaskell Memorial Tower on King Street is a real local landmark. Knutsford Town Council claims that Knutsford Royal May Day is one of the most famous May Day events the UK has to offer, and the town’s first official day was held in 1864. In the early 1900s, meanwhile, Richard Harding Watt made an imprint on Knutsford’s landscape, with the designer being involved in the creation of a number of Italianate buildings including the Gaskell Tower. One of his structures, the Ruskin Rooms, hosted a welcome club for United A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

States Army Central officers opened by well-known general George S. Patton during World War II. In the latter part of the century, in April 1997, the town additionally saw the “Battle of Knutsford Heath” take place between politician Neil Hamilton and independent candidate Martin Bell.

These links aside, there are a number of different things to discover in Knutsford. Knutsford Heritage Centre provides an insight into the history of the town, while the penny farthing museum at The Courtyard cafe features a collection of Victoriana. Another local attraction is The Moor, which boasts open grass and tree areas and a children’s play space. The park retained its Green Flag status this year, with this award scheme acknowledging and rewarding well-managed parks and green spaces. A short drive from Knutsford town centre, Tatton Park is one of the country’s most complete historic estates and hosts the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park annually. The site is home to an early 18th-century mansion, as well as attractions including gardens, a farm and 1,000 acres of deer park. Other local places of interest include Gauntlet Birds of Prey Eagle & Vulture Park – which contains more than 180 birds from 50 different species – and Tabley House, the only 18th-century Palladian country house in the county. Need some R&R? The Mere near Knutsford boasts a spa and golf course.

The market is part of The Makers Market, which says that visitors should anticipate food, drink, art, craft and music. The event is described as “a great day out for all the family”.
DINING AND DRINKING
Knutsford has previously been called “the gastro-capital of Cheshire”. Popular local eateries on Tripadvisor (as of October 2023) include Shamoli Restaurant, which serves authentic Indian food and was a finalist in the English Curry Awards 2023. Other highlyrated spots are Giovanni’s – which claims to be “an absolute must for connoisseurs of Italian food” – and Evuna, which combines a Spanish restaurant with a tapas bar. As for cafes, the Tea Room and Cafe on the Corner are both favourites online.

If you’re looking for somewhere to have a drink, Knutsford also has a great selection of pubs and bars. The Lost & Found is a pub and cocktail bar with decor that takes inspiration from flora and fauna, describing itself as “a bohemian hideaway free from the stresses of modern life”. Another destination not to be missed is The Rose & Crown, which boasts a 350-year-old building, locally-sourced cask ales and more than 20 varieties of gin. Dexter & Jones is owned by singer and actor Adam Rickitt and his presenter wife Katy, with the venue offering more than 450 craft beers, over 150 small batch gins and in excess of 60 wines. D13 Irish Bar, meanwhile, is run by Boyzone’s Shane Lynch and his wife Sheena, who is a regular cast member in The Real Housewives of Cheshire. I
t’s fair to say not everyone embraces cooking at Christmas. From underdone turkey to burnt to a crisp roast potatoes, we are not all Michelin-starred chefs who take everything in our stride. Yes it’s great going to someone else’s house and watching them struggle through the process, but there’s always that nagging guilt about helping with the washing up. So it’s no surprise that many are deciding to stay at a hotel for the festivities – and is there a better place to start than a venue with home in the name? ABode Chester is part of a larger family of hotels dotted around the UK, but is very much Cheshire at heart. With unparalleled views of England’s oldest working racecourse, the contemporary ABode Chester offers a warm welcome in the heart of the city, complemented by exceptional brasserie-style dining and a relaxed, sophisticated design.
Incorporating the ABode collection’s trademark Comfortable, Desirable, Enviable and Fabulous room categories, each of the 85 guestrooms offers a distinct style with quality and comfort at their core and a luxurious bed. Often on these pages we focus on a talented head chef who oversees the entire food operation at a restaurant, but at ABode Chester it’s very much about the collective. A talented team of chefs makes the best use of the finest local and regional produce and ingredients. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual dinner, a glass or two of something good in the Brasserie Abode Bar, or a delicious meal at Brasserie Abode, ABode Chester offers something for everyone. Absolutely Cheshire pulled up a pew, ordered a tipple and spent time with ABode Chester’s Andy Turner to find out a little more about what they offer, day to day and over the festivities too.
“Every cocktail comes with something to nibble on” Q Why is the location of the hotel perfect? A We are walking distance to the town and
we have unparalleled views of England’s oldest working racecourse, not to mention our amazing views from the bar and restaurant.
Q What dining options do you offer? A We serve breakfast, lunch and
dinner at Brasserie ABode. Breakfast is obviously available for overnight guests, but we also welcome a lot of outside visitors for morning meetings over breakfast or simply to enjoy an indulgent start to the day. Our lunch and dinner menu features something to suit all – sharing plates, starters, snacks and our plats du jour. Generosity and value are at the heart of what we do; our classic dishes features plentiful sides and every cocktail comes with something to nibble on. Join us for brunch, Sunday lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and cocktails and some of the best views in the city.
Q Who oversees the cooking? A We have a great team in our kitchen
who work together to ensure dishes are A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“Our location is wonderful, and our restaurant and bar has the best views and an extensive menu” changed to suit the seasonal ingredients and as we head into the festive season, our menus will reflect this. Q What typically would we find on menus? A Well there is such a great selection as I
mentioned, but some of the favourites are the Truffle Mac & Cheese Bites and the Crispy Duck Fritters to share over drinks. Our seafood sharing board is also lovely and a favourite is the Brasserie Burger, of course.
Q Are there a couple of dishes that you particularly love at the moment and why? A Hard to choose – but I do like the Roasted Cauliflower Steak or the Slow Roasted Pork Belly.
Q Do you aim to use local produce where possible? A We do and we work closely with our suppliers to ensure we are getting the very best, seasonal produce and our team have good relationships with our local farms and suppliers. Q How soon do you start planning for Christmas? A Christmas was in the planning in July and we have our festive menus online and have some great bookings for Christmas parties and gatherings. Our festive dinner menus are really popular as well as our festive afternoon tea – this is a really nice treat for those who are doing some shopping and then come to relax with our lovely tea. We also have some special gin evenings, these are always popular and get booked up quickly. Q What menus can we expect over the festive period? A We have a menu that includes three courses and a seasonal cocktail and our afternoon tea menu includes Champagne. We will have a selection of starters that include soup, parfait and of course the main course will have turkey as well as other suggestions such as fillet of salmon, baked aubergine and delicious desserts – my favourite is the white chocolate and clementine cheesecake. Q Are you holding any special events too? A Well I mentioned our gin evenings,
52
but also we have some Sunday lunch dates that we offer a festive menu with wine and also carol singers join us for some festive songs – this is a really lovely afternoon and definitely gets people in the spirit. Q Why should our readers consider a stay at ABode Chester? A Our location is wonderful, our restaurant and bar has the best views and an extensive menu for food and drinks and the choice has something to suit everyone. Also our rooms are lovely – many with views over the racecourse; all have wonderful bathrooms and the most comfortable beds. Perfect after a busy day shopping and a lovely dinner! Q Will you have much time off over Christmas? A As it is such a busy time, we are all working hard over the coming months, but we do manage to have time off to enjoy some time too. But the atmosphere here at work is always good, especially when people are coming here to celebrate the festivities, so coming to work is great fun, even though it is busy! Q Where else in Chester do you love spending time over the festive season? A Chester is such a lovely city to explore – I really enjoy the Christmas market when it arrives so I look forward to having a good wander around the stalls.

The Lost & Found Absolutely Cheshire speaks to Frankie Harrison, the books and events manager, about what this Knutsford favourite will be treating us all to this Christmas
Q What is the ethos behind the Lost & Found bars? A Once you step inside the avant-garde world of The Lost & Found, you’ll be transported to an unexplored world of whimsicality, with hidden charms around every corner to uncover. Enveloping you in the elegance and opulence only found in the memories of times gone by, while embracing the splendour of the natural world surrounding us, let us take you on a journey of discovery and creation. Q What is molecular mixology? A Molecular mixology is the process of creating cocktails using the equipment and techniques of molecular gastronomy. We aim to create a range of different cocktails using professional equipment like blowtorches, liquid nitrogen and foams, to create mystical cocktails with enhanced flavours. Q Does it take time to train up your mixologists? A All our mixologists follow The Lost & Found training plan to master the cocktails, which runs alongside on-the-job learning. We also have a ‘Professor Program’, which encourages continuous development for our team to grow within The Lost & Found family. This includes inviting suppliers to host training sessions at

the bar to expand our knowledge of various spirits and serves, which is a great way to encourage innovation across our menus. Q Describe The Lost & Found Cheshire setting... A Located in the heart of Knutsford, our restaurant and bar is a beautiful space housed within a converted Old Town Hall. Blending the old with the new, The Lost & Found is an avant-garde bar with a mix of decadent and whimsical design elements, from brass, gold and industrial features balanced with florals and fairy lights. Be welcomed for a cocktail (or two) at our main bar, or guests can discover our secret bar and private dining space, hidden behind a portrait,- which is perfect if you’re looking for a secret party destination. Q What one thing would you say makes The Lost & Found Knutsford stand out? A The building itself is truly one of a kind. Residing in a Grade II-listed building, originally designed by leading Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse, The Lost & Found Knutsford incorporates the old town hall features, which look particularly striking against the interior design of the bar and restaurant area. It is a beautiful backdrop that lends itself well to celebrations and parties.
Q What kind of things would we find on the restaurant menu? A Our all-day dining menus focus on seasonal dishes from land, sea and garden. With an array of plates to choose from, we aim to have a dish for any eater, alongside a quintessential British afternoon tea or, if you want to go bottomless, look no further than our brunch with bottomless bubbles. Q Is Christmas always an exciting time there? A Yes definitely – we have a busy Christmas with lots of festive fun! From parties in our secret bar to large functions for up to 100+ guests in the restaurant, we are looking forward to welcoming guests from near and far. For 2023, we are offering a range of menus for diners to choose from, which includes a Festive Set Menu with three-courses for £37, while for larger groups and private dining, there is also a Festive Buffet menu and drinks packages available – cheers to that!
a wintery pumpkin, squash and sage ravioli. On the three-course set menu, there is also a choice of warming desserts – think Christmas pudding and a chocolate & praline torte – plus a gluten-free menu so no one misses out.
Q What will the festive menu focus on? A It isn’t Christmas without a turkey! This is our signature on the festive menus, served with pigs in blankets, stuffing, crispy roasties and gravy (plus all the veg), though if guests want something different, we are also offering a roasted rump of beef with chive mash and
Q And what are your New Year’s Eve plans?
Q What about Christmas cocktails? A This year, the team are going to craft a few specialised cocktails for Christmas – keep an eye on our socials for a sneak peek. There will also be mulled wine (and alcohol-free alternatives) readily available all season long.
A We are hosting a Soul and Motown band with a four-course menu and champagne in the restaurant. While downstairs, there will be a DJ night for guests to enjoy.

London Negroni with a twist
f someone would ask you to name the 10 most popular cocktails of all time, the Negroni is always in there. It was invented in 1919 by Count Camillo Negroni when he asked for an Americano, but with gin instead of soda water, at Caffé Casoni in Florence. It’s one of the simplest cocktails there is - equal parts of bitter, vermouth and gin. It’s fun to use this as the base and adapt depending on your mood – subbing in the gin for whiskey, vodka or even mezcal. This twist on a negroni uses vodka, cynar (a bittersweet Italian liqueur) and lillet rouge for a sweeter twist on a negroni, but still a balanced version of the original.
Serves 1
INGREDIENTS • 25ml Ketel one Vodka • 25ml Cynar bitter aperitif • 25ml Lillet Rouge • Orange peel, for garnishing
METHOD 1 Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass with ice, and stir until perfectly chilled 2 Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice and garnish with orange peel.

“It's a creative solution to our environmental crisis rather than giving up what you love”
SKY’S
THE LIMIT
Gift a more brilliant tomorrow with Skydiamond... Absolutely uncovers the story behind the company
I
magine a Christmas promise of a brighter tomorrow for people and the planet – say it with the magic of a Skydiamond, the world’s first carbonnegative certified diamond, born from the sky to protect the Earth. Each individual piece of Skydiamond jewellery is handcrafted in the Cotswolds, just down the road and over the hills from the diamond-making facility. This father-son duo has been working in the industry for over half a century and has built a highly skilled team of craftspeople who proudly ensure each piece is exceptional. By going back to nature for the answers, Skydiamond offers another way; a creative solution to our environmental crisis
rather than giving up what you love. To do this, they have made unrelenting efforts and innovations, building their own future-facing, patented process to make the precious stones; it fuses carbon captured from the atmosphere with harvested rainwater, which is then heated and pressurised in a process powered by solar and wind power – fully measurable negative emissions achieved by design, instead of unreliable offsetting. Plus, they are more traceable and eco-friendlier than standard lab-grown diamonds. Skydiamond has already appeared in collaborations with iconic names such as Steven Webster and Gucci. This bluesky thinking was the ingenuity of ecoentrepreneur and environmentalist Dale
Vince OBE and sits within his growing portfolio of green innovations. Dale came up with the idea for Skydiamond while thinking about how to remove CO2 from the atmosphere on a planetary scale, and about how to store it in the most permanent way. A diamond is the ultimate form of carbon, which led to the simple idea to take carbon from the atmosphere and use it to make diamonds. It took five years of R&D to create and perfect the process to turn atmospheric carbon into actual diamonds. In creating this method they’ve set a new industrial standard fit for the 21st century. This is a brilliant future we can all aspire to. We just need to set our imaginations free. @skymineddiamond skydiamond.com

Having first encountered the soothing and unique Hotpod Yoga experience in 2018, Stuart likened his experience to “stepping
through a door into another version of myself that I much preferred to the angry, middle-aged man I’d become”. Despite having had preconceptions of what hot yoga might be like, Stuart admitted that none of them were right and that he in fact loved the experience so much that he wanted to share it with others. “No matter how I felt before class, I always felt better after. I’m really happy about who I am today, and I honestly believe that Hotpod Yoga has been a catalyst in so many ways – physically and mentally I am stronger, and more capable of dealing with life and all its challenges.”
WHAT TO EXPECT… Hotpod Yoga classes take place in a warm environment, which helps the body melt into the practice, warming the muscles and aiding flexibility, while making the heart work harder. The classes are rooted in Vinyasa Flow – a style of yoga that synchronises movement and breath, to work the body and calm the mind – with classes suitable for everyone and an instructor available throughout to offer clear and encouraging cues to help students get into and out of poses comfortably, as well as to offer variations that challenge more advanced students, or provide extra support for beginners. The ‘pods’ glow with a special purple hue that takes you deeper into your practice, calming the mind, quietening racing thoughts, and transporting you a million miles from the outside world. Music is also at the heart of the Hotpod experience, with immersive soundscapes accompanying every class, while a blend of bergamot, lavender and orange ensures a beautifully scented environment, while helping unwind the body and awaken the mind.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Hotpod Yoga co-founder and head of teaching, Nick Higgins, explains that the benefits of yoga are varied and many, building mental and physical strength, and cementing positive habits for life. It can be unique for every individual, with everyone able to take away something beneficial from their practice. Key benefits include: Supports a stronger, healthier body Yoga involves a wide range of postures and exercises that engage various muscle groups. This helps build strength, tone muscles, and improve overall body composition. Additionally, it encourages proper alignment and posture, reducing the risk of musculoskeletal issues, which can cause significant aches and pain. Builds mental and physical resilience Yoga helps build resilience by teaching students to adapt and find balance in challenging postures and situations. It cultivates mental fortitude through practices like breath control and meditation, helping individuals cope with stressors both during class and outside it. By adding heat and humidity to the space in hot yoga, this is amplified, really helping develop resilience and control.

“Yoga trains the mind to become more present in the moment” • Improves cardiovascular health
While yoga may not be a high-intensity cardiovascular exercise, it can still contribute to heart health. Vinyasa classes can elevate heart rate and improve circulation, while focusing on breathing can enhance lung function and oxygenation of the body. Supports better sleep Regular yoga practice has been associated with improved sleep quality. The relaxation techniques used in yoga, combined with stress reduction, can help calm the mind and prepare the body for restful sleep. This can be particularly beneficial for those who have a busy mind and who may typically struggle with sleep. Improves flexibility and joint mobility Yoga involves a variety of stretches and poses that target different muscle groups

and joints. Over time, consistent practice leads to increased flexibility and improved range of motion. This can alleviate stiffness and discomfort, enhancing overall mobility. Reduces stress and improves focus Yoga places a strong emphasis on training the mind to become more present in the moment. Through meditation, breathwork, and physical practice, you can learn to calm the mind, reduce stress levels, and enhance focus. Cultivates greater self-awareness Yoga encourages self-reflection and introspection. Through regular practice, you can become more attuned to your body, thoughts, and emotions. This heightened self-awareness can lead to a deeper understanding of one’s own needs and desires, fostering personal growth and self-acceptance.

• Boosts recovery and reduces
likelihood of injury Yoga promotes balanced strength and flexibility, which can help prevent injuries. It also aids in post-injury recovery by gently building strength, increasing circulation to injured areas, and promoting a mindful approach to movement.

SUE AND TAMRYN
T H E
B E A U T Y
WITHIN Tamryn Stowell on the business her mother founded, Willow Organic, and why they strive to be different Q What originally inspired the
launch of Willow Organic? A Founder – and my mother – Sue Stowell was originally working as a renowned interior designer and received a commission to design the multi-award winning SenSpa. At home she already lived an organic lifestyle and once the spa was finished the spa director asked if she could source any organic beauty products that would fit with the luxury ethos of the brand. My mother struggled to find any truly beautiful, truly effective organic beauty and skincare products – and so Willow was born. Q How did you want to be different? A Willow wanted to be different in many
ways. Firstly, to be a truly effective alternative to synthetic products – not just an ethical option, but a viable alternative that achieved the same results. Secondly, to be authentic and that meant being Soil Association certified organic and natural. Thirdly, to be
beautiful and aspirational, my mother as an established designer always valued elegance. Q Can you explain how your products are made? A We work very closely with Soil Association certified cosmetic chemists. We draw up a plan of a product we would like to launch, ingredients it should include, and we slowly form samples with the chemists and then test their effectiveness. From conception to sale normally takes around six months due to the certification process and various other procedures. All of our products are required to contain a minimum of 75% organic and natural ingredients. Q What have been some of your popular products? A Our overnight creams are definitely the most popular. At night time our bodies go into repair mode and so it is often the most effective time to provide them with an extra boost of hydration and nutrients. In addition, our BioMarine Serum is wildly popular – it reduces wrinkles and appearances of lines in minutes when used before a moisturiser during the day. It has just won Woman&Home’s Best Serum of 2023 award! Q How do you see Willow Organic evolving? A We are doing a soft launch into the US in
the next few months to see how that goes – it’s such an enormous market, and this is just a small test, but if it proves fruitful then we would adapt our business model to make room for a new US presence. Find out more by visiting willowbeautyproducts.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Absolutely Cheshire tries on-demand Pilates, yoga, wellness, and nutrition platform Live Brave
E
ven though my daughter is now two and a half, I’ll admit that my pelvic floor probably isn’t as strong as it should be post-birth. I know I should be doing more pelvic floor muscle training, but I’ll hold my hands up and admit that I’m not very good at remembering when I’m busy. Helping to improve your breathwork, core strength, and posture, a combination of Pilates and yoga can be just as effective for your pelvic floor. However, getting out to classes regularly is a challenge with a toddler, and I’ll often prioritise going to the gym. So I was excited to try Live Brave, an on-demand platform offering day-by-day Pilates and yoga classes alongside
wellness and nutrition advice. Live Brave was founded by Lou Buttler, a qualified Polestar and Stott Pilates instructor (and wife of England cricketer Jos Buttler). She first discovered Pilates after her mum had chemotherapy and reconstruction surgery and was amazed at the incredible mental and physical benefits it had to offer. Her signature teaching style conditions the body with small movements that build strength and prioritise alignment. With 700+ sessions, the platform is super easy to use and I love how the classes are day-by-day and tailored to your particular level or stage. There’s programmes aimed at beginner, intermediate, and
advanced, and specialised programmes for everything from menopause to osteoporosis. There’s also a section for pre and post-natal as well as functional yoga. What I have really enjoyed though is the ‘Lifestyle Challenge’, a five-week programme that gives you daily suggestions for fitness sessions, as well as nutritious recipes and mindfulness audios, all put together by Live Brave’s expert team. The best bit? That I can easily do the fitness sessions in my daughter’s nap time and I don’t even need to leave the house. Absolutely Cheshire speaks to Charlotte Findlater about Design & Build, emotions and an environmental ethos
Q What are your earliest memories of being creative? A As a child I was endlessly re-arranging my room. I was fortunate to grow up in a couple of stunning historical homes, these underwent phases of renovation. I was hooked even as a five-year-old! Q Pre-launching your own business, what were your experiences in the industry? A Before setting up Charlotte Findlater Design, I did high-end turnkey property development for 12 years, focusing on historical buildings alongside large scale renovations. This experience has been invaluable and is reassuring to our clients as we always have an eye on maximising property value. Q Was there a moment that inspired you to go it alone? A Someone said to me Charlotte ‘Jump and the Universe will catch you’ and I guess that is all the encouragement I needed at that point!
DESIGN
Q From day one, what did you want to offer? A I wanted to offer an alternative to just interior design or architecture. As a design studio, our fundamental aim has become the need to leave a positive design legacy when renovating and restoring both historical and modern spaces. Each material and resource we specify is researched so we can understand its impact on human and ecological health, when in production, in use and upon being discarded. We create restorative home retreats that provide our clients with the space they need to reconnect, replenish their energy, step back and slow down. I am driven by the desire for people to know that the person who created these places cared deeply about the way they A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

being unique and reflecting who you are – and in the power of creativity, not the standardisation of places. We are driven by the idea that design transcends the boundaries of aesthetics and that genuine reflection can nourish every scheme we work on. This vision of design aims to enrich the human experience and is at the centre of all our projects. For us, design is much more than the application of technical knowledge. It is a means of artistic expression making it possible to transform a space into a real emotional universe. It is a process that allows us to create calm, natural, and harmonious spaces. Symmetry, proportion and architectural features run right through our environmentally-friendly spaces. And you can expect to see stunning design-led craftsmanship because we wholly value collaboration in the creative process. It is through the sharing of ideas, concepts and visions that artists and craftsmen from different fields can develop their creativity and help us create spaces that are extraordinary. Q What inspires you? A Nature is my ultimate inspiration, I am very aware of my surroundings. I respond to nature and the environment around me, memories and connections to places I love, that inspire me or that I have lived in permeate my work. I love travel and culture and always take inspiration from both. I am fascinated by surfaces and textures of different landscapes and materials.
experience them. I want the spaces I design to create an emotional response, to spark thought, to encourage relaxation, and, above all, to endure in a timeless way. Q What do you feel makes you different from other designers? A Our environmental ethos sets us apart. Our focus has always been on nature, wellbeing, health, sustainability and ethical purchasing. Our default has always been to work with the natural over the superficial. We do not engage with on-trend or fad architecture and interiors. There is such beauty to be explored in naturally formed materials, each unique and over time develop the most wonderful patinas. They also have the benefit of being reusable or reworkable in the future. For example we use a lot of wood and stone in our projects and have extensive material libraries to draw upon. All designers have a signature style and design principle that sit at the heart of their work. Our obsession is the interplay between people, built environments and nature. Expect natural materials, spaces that boost wellbeing, and handcrafted statement pieces. The design world and trends change at high speed, but it’s time to slow down, and to step away from damaging mass-market consumerism. Our design ethos centres on considered designs that reconnect people with nature. We do not champion new trends. Rather, we seek to meet the needs and desires of individuals. And as defenders of slow design, we create natural, sustainable and transformational spaces with calming atmospheres. By designing interiors that respect nature and the human experience, we create spaces that inspire and tell a story. Places that encourage people to slow down, to think, and to nourish their sense of wellbeing. We also recognise that each client is unique and place them at the heart of our work. We believe in each place

Q How do you like to work with a client? A Our projects always involve exploring a narrative often whilst solving a problem. We are passionate about what we do, loving a good challenge, enjoying making connections between architecture, design, people and place. Collaboration is really important to us, we enjoy working with clients who share our ethos, care about sustainability and appreciate outstanding design. A lot of our work involves combining historic and contemporary architecture and interior design and it’s a process we take real pleasure in – bringing the new and old together in a way that complements both. We like to take our clients on a journey and introduce them to a mixed natural material palette. Q What is Ecoscaping? A By Ecoscaping rather than landscaping, we focus on designing gardens that are biodiverse. Forming habitats for nature and providing significant human health benefits. Delivering continuity from indoors to out, echoing the character of space and place. We believe that one of the fundamental ways in which a project's success can be measured is by making it stand out when the project is viewed as a whole, where inside and outside stand in perfectly balanced harmony. Q What are you looking forward to in 2024? A We have some super projects flowing into 2024 including a large eco new-build on the coast with limited access, work on some listed building residences, a swimming pool complex and the restoration of a Riad in Marrakesh. Separately we are looking forward to growing our studio team. Get the people right and we know everything else flows. Building on our strong studio team where people challenge each other, commissioning and supporting skilled craftspeople, makers and our build teams. Our Lancashire Barn Conversion project really both showcases and highlights the extent of our work. Starting with the architecture, we took our cue from its Agrarian roots as an ancient farmstead, significantly extending and remodelling the interior layout infusing it throughout with both smart tech and a wealth of natural materials with a real focus on craftmanship and handcrafted furniture and ceramics. We juxtaposed this building's design with modern art from artists such as Banksy.
2
Historical renovation of a Grade 11 listed mill. The mill and its original waterwheel date back to 1300. This previous conversion was poorly conceived. It simply didn’t suit modern living. We brought a radical approach. Preservation and restoration fused contemporary and industrial materials. Inside, we made only sensitive interventions. White plasterwork highlights historical and new features. Stone floors, oak flooring, beams, oak doors, and rustic cladding complement a neutral palette. The mill’s industrial origins became the single most important preoccupation. And the design process drew on these humble manufacturing origins. The build process involved significant restructuring and re-servicing of the mill. The deterioration of timbers in much of the building required replacement. We introduced a complicated solution of concealed steelwork and structural timber framing. This opened up the living spaces and improved the flow of the layout. Two new wings add striking architectural drama. They flood the building with natural light and make the most of its beautiful views across the millpond and beyond.

HISTORY Kenton Jones reflects on a business with over 40 years of unrivalled quality, from designing a kitchen out of school desks to working with royalty
T
he story of Kenton Jones begins way back in 1977, when a former primary school teacher contacted Kenton one day to ask him to make a kitchen out of reclaimed school desks. He had remembered Kenton’s fascination with timber, and it was just the project for the fledgling design-build business. This novel request kick-started over 45 years of producing quality, hand-crafted kitchens and furniture. Kenton started the business in the late 1970s after spending several years studying architecture at the University of Nottingham. Soon after, he set up his own workshop in the old mill of a local farm, where he began
96
to create the first Kenton Jones kitchens out of local oak. The business began to grow and, by the mid-1980s, Kenton had opened his first showroom. He also began to expand his workshop at the farm. By the late 1990s, the business had outgrown the old mill, so Kenton acquired his own premises in Welshpool, Mid-Wales. By this point, he employed a team of skilled craftsmen to deal with the growing demand. Soon afterwards, he was tasked by none other than King Charles, to design, produce, and install a kitchen at Highgrove House, the then-prince’s family residence. It is this sense of history that underpins much of what Kenton Jones does. Kenton passed down his passion

for timber and woodwork to his son, who got involved in the business from a young age, and now serves as managing director. “From a young age I was involved in the family business and surrounded by timber,” Kenton says. “I was taught the characteristics of species and cuts of timber, both in its processed and final life. In the family home we were taught to respect furniture and timber finishes such as doors and floors due to the workmanship and man hours put into those items to produce. It was this grounding that my father had underpinned our whole business with, by selecting a group of craftsmen that took great care and pride in what they produce. This same quality resonates today throughout the whole team and I too now teach this to my three sons.” Every Kenton Jones kitchen is bespoke, hand-crafted and made to order. The customer is closely involved at every step of the journey, starting from the initial consultation and home visit, and each kitchen is tailored to
“Our kitchens are designed and crafted as lifetime purchases” its space. Every piece of wood is unique, and so is every Kenton Jones kitchen. Sustainability is also central to their philosophy with a collection dedicated to using locally-sourced homegrown timber. The durability of the materials used combined with the quality of the craftsmanship ensures that their kitchens are built to last. “With some of our local original kitchens still out there in their original form 40+ years later, I feel it is a true testament to what quality stands for,” Kenton states. “Our kitchens are designed and crafted as lifetime purchases which we hope many generations can flow through the home and enjoy.” Kenton Jones’ kitchen collections showcase this quality. Their Hygge Scandinavian range offers a calming design, utilising clean lines, neutral palettes, and natural materials. Their classic Artisan collection features a shaker-style design, which gives the kitchen a warm, homely, and rustic feel. For those who favour something more innovative and experimental, the Bauhaus range is ideal. Featuring a combination of metal and concrete, this modern, minimal design gives an industrial feel. The Highgrove range is modelled on the kitchen that Kenton designed and built for King Charles back in 2001. This collection is luxury, heritage, and sustainable, using only locally-sourced timber. A Highgrove kitchen is also unique to the extent that customers can even supply timber from their own trees and also visit the workshop to select specific pieces of timber featuring unique knots and grain qualities. Finally, and new for 2023, is the Arcadia range. This outdoor kitchen is based on a design built by Kenton for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2023. Using homegrown, local timber, these bespoke, al fresco kitchens offer a modern, fresh feel. Owning a Kenton Jones kitchen is like owning a little piece of history, whether that’s the master craftsmanship learned over 50 years, or it’s the unique story of the beautiful timber used. kentonjones.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

HEART of the HOME Whether it’s for juggling the cooking or hosting friends and family, the kitchen comes into its own at Christmas. David Lisle showcases five designs that have it all covered
GOLD LEAF NEW LONDON KITCHEN Central to this is the AGA, which is great for cooking roast dinners. It offers you the ability to cook at various oven temperatures and there are big cavities for joints of meat. The layout of the room offers social cooking with the AGA built into an island, facing out to socialise with guests. The last thing you want to think about at Christmas is the washing up, but here there are big sinks on the back wall with gold Quooker boiling water tap for filling pots with a matching pull out rinse. Cleaning has never looked so good.
ZIRICOTE & PEWTER KITCHEN You may be able to crack the cooking, but Christmas dinner is as much about sitting around the table with friends and family - so the right room ambience is key. Here, rich colours of bookmatched ziricote wood panels gives a warming, cosy feeling, but opulent and elegant at the same time. There is a matching bespoke 12-seater dining table in view of the kitchen, making it easier for a spot of social cooking. There’s the added bonus of it being easy to clean up afterwards.

LEAD GREY & SILVER LEAF KITCHEN Want to really impress your guests this Christmas? Then this kitchen should offer plenty of inspiration and then some. It’s a full Gaggenau suite with two extra large ovens, combimicrowave and combi-steam oven for full professional-grade cooking. There are multiple professional cooking functions, such bread proving, sous-vide cooking, rotisserie cooking, baking stone cooking, and various humidity levels. The full surface 90cm induction hob means you can position pans anywhere, and the deep drawers below offer the ideal space for pan storage. Guests can get drinks at the bar and sit and relax whilst their Christmas lunch is being prepared.

Cooking, dining and comfortable seating all in one room… The kids can be watching TV/playing in snug area whilst adults are close by cooking and socialising. Here, there is a matching hand-applied silver leafed dining table – the circular design makes for more easy interaction between all members of the party, ensuring socialising is much more relaxed, with the ‘Lazy Susan’ perfect for sharing dishes. The walk in pantry hidden away behind a secret door designed to match cabinetry means you can hide clutter.
GREY OAK & TAMO ASH KITCHEN The perfect kitchen for a new year’s eve party. For starters, there’s extra large Wolf appliances for cooking, but it’s the furniture that ensures the party will get started. Curved island seating makes socialising easier, and the curve follows through to a massive four metre long dining table. Pocket doors open all the way through to the living room for a kids/teenagers space, leading down further to the games room/bar with pool table. There are various settings for different groups/activities all within view of each other. See more on all of these kitchens at davidlislekitchendesign.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

1909 kitchens, stocked across Cheshire, peer into their crystal ball to suggest the trends coming in 2024 for the hub of the home
W
ith 2024 just around the corner, the world of interior design continues to evolve, welcoming a fusion of new and timeless kitchen trends. Homeowners are now seeking innovative ways to elevate their interiors to showcase individuality, functionality and style. From earthy green colour palettes to innovative storage solutions, Jessica Inglis, consumer marketing manager at 1909, shares her insight on meeting the latest trends and demands of the 21st century. “Rich, earthy greens were hugely popular in 2023 and we don’t see it slowing down in the new year as it brings a sense of tranquillity and natural connection to the heart of the home,” she says. “Green cabinetry in particular can dramatically enhance the overall look and feel of a kitchen, allowing for a variety of design possibilities. From Olive to Forest Green, any of the 1909 kitchens can be painted in a range of organic, green shades that will suit any taste and kitchen aesthetic. For a particularly eye-catching look, pair this colour with white marble surfaces, sleek brass or matt black hardware and a soft backdrop for a sought-after finish. “Now more than ever, homeowners are seeking clutter-free and organised spaces for a clean and streamlined aesthetic,” she continues. “It’s important to have areas to store awkward items such as cutting boards and trays, as well as spices and cookware. With space-saving storage solutions, you can not only enhance kitchen organisation, but A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

also contribute to a more efficient and enjoyable cooking and dining experience, especially in smaller or galley kitchens. With our range of smart storage, everything is within reach, ensuring not an inch of space is wasted and that surfaces are kept clear. “A trend that will always be a firm favourite, particularly going into 2024, is designer pantries,” Jessica says. “These spaces go above and beyond traditional storage by incorporating high-end design elements and customisation, providing a functional stow away space that is also the focal point of the kitchen. They cater to those who value both organisation and design aesthetics and are often coordinated with the overall kitchen design, creating a seamless flow between the pantry and the rest of the kitchen. Whether you opt for integrated, free-standing or walk-in, a pantry is a must-have in the new year. Each design is perfect for housing and zoning key tasks, such as a breakfast or coffee station, a home for appliances or even for hiding away a home bar.” When the family business 1909 was first established more than a century ago, things looked a little different to say the least. Home was a hardware shop, and the team you could count on one hand. Over time, they went from ironmongery into joinery, caring from the very beginning about only making things in the way that they deserved to be made. It was this fundamental philosophy and their uncompromising exacting standards that paved the way for 1909. Now in their fifth generation, the founding principles remain unchanged: 1909 is meticulous in thinking and in doing, is committed to the finest details, and to putting customers first. Investing in 1909 is to welcome something into your home that has forever in mind. The way
“A trend that will always be a firm favourite going into 2024 is designer pantries” that they approach their collections is that they are merely the starting point. Slab is their most contemporary and Ovolo their most classic with Shaker somewhere between the two. But a 1909 kitchen is always true to its heritage with every aspect ready to be tailored to your preferences, from your colours and worksurfaces, right through to your hinges and what goes on behind the doors. As we embrace a new era of innovation and creativity, kitchens should reflect the changing needs and preferences of the modern homeowner. Setting the benchmark for superior design, the 1909 collection pays homage to these trends, promising meticulously crafted. 1909kitchens.co.uk

LOOK Everest on what to look for when buying new windows
W
hen it comes to pu rcha si ng new windows there are hundreds of styles, designs and colours to choose from – and this only relates to how they look. In terms of performance, there are even more elements to bear in mind. Window and door specialists, Everest, have explored some of the key points homeowners should consider before agreeing on what new windows they’d like installed in their home. “uPVC windows can last anywhere between 20 and 30 years, so it’s important homeowners truly understand what they’re investing in,” they explain. “We always encourage people to explore how the windows will look and how well they perform. It’s also important to consider what they need their new windows to do and the problems they want to address in their home. With this knowledge home-
owners will be sure to have the confidence that they’ve made the right decision.” Window styles and aesthetics The way windows look is vital because they have a big impact on both kerb appeal and the value of a property. Reviewing the full design options and styles is essential to ensure homeowners find windows that suit their home and personal taste. Security and safety One of the best ways for homeowners to identify if a window is safe and secure is if it is PAS24 and Secured by Design certified. Any windows with this accreditation mean they have been rigorously tested to ensure they can protect a home from unwanted intruders. Energy efficiency Modern high-performing windows combining quality glass with a specialist window frame are fantastic for maximising a home’s energy efficiency. Windows with
a low U-value are brilliant at retaining heat inside a property, whereas a high G-value can maximise free energy from the sun via solar gain. Everest offers the ability to select the type of glass used depending on a homeowner’s personal preferences and the indoor environment they’d like to create. Noise reduction Coated double glazed windows are great for significantly reducing external sounds and can help to create calmer living spaces. With a better understanding of how each of these key elements plays a fundamental role in a window’s performance, homeowners will be well equipped to invest in new windows that meet their specific needs. Everest offers a wide range of options and choices allowing you to design and configure a window that not only looks great, but also delivers high-quality performance. From classic to contemporary, cosy to corner, Arighi Bianchi in Macclesfield pick out the hottest sofa styles for the season
T
he long dark nights, drizzly weather and return of TV favourites like Strictly can only mean one thing – it’s sofa season. But according to home interiors expert Lucy Mather from Arighi Bianchi in Macclesfield, what’s trending in sofas is being driven by some unusual, beyond the norm factors as we head into winter 2023 (and 2024) – choosing a sofa is more linked to our lifestyles than generations before. “The move into autumn always sees a surge in searches, and sales, for sofas and snuggler chairs with people seeking out advice on what to buy and how to make this tricky purchasing decision”, says Lucy. “Perhaps more than most other types of furniture, selecting a sofa requires thoughtful deliberation – from style and comfort to the type of fabric that will suit how it will be used. Then there’s colour, modern or classic, budget or blow out. “Yet greater than ever, this year, additional factors that go beyond the usual interior design decisions are playing into our sofa selection as we increasingly prioritise the emotional impact of our décor. The economy, political climate and our desire for greater mental wellbeing are all playing a bigger part.”
HOMEBODIES’ HOMES
“A recent survey showed that 64% of people now have a ‘greater desire’ to stay home versus before the UK lockdowns,” Lucy says. “This increase in ‘homebody behaviour’ is affecting home remodels, and according to the survey living spaces are evolving to be focused a lot more around entertainment spaces and hosting. Sofas are now central to formal (and informal) drinks gatherings as much as laid back movie nights. Snugs are also on the rise, according to recent research too. “The sofa is more than ever at the heart of many ‘staying in spaces’ and this is driving buying decisions. As a result, corner and modular sofas are in high demand – as big as your space will allow. A large, oversized sofa will always provide an enticing centrepiece to a living space and create that much needed seating for guests. As this trend grows, expect to see sofas becoming even more versatile. “Foot stools and smaller armchairs are also selling fast,” Lucy adds. “The key is to make these pieces of furniture look like they belong in a space and haven’t been placed there for a specific occasion. The beauty of adding in these kinds of pieces mean that you can be more adventurous with pattern and colour, treating them as accent pieces.”

ZONING OUT “It’s not just about entertaining,” Lucy says. “The expanding size of families, obstacles to homeownership for younger generations, and the need to provide care for older family members residing in the family home means homes are busier than ever, and traditional room layouts need more flex than ever before. “Many people are opting to establish designated areas within their living rooms for lounging to allow for other spaces as well such as play areas or reading nooks. Segmenting the space, perhaps by incorporating two smaller sofas along with a couple of armchairs, provides the flexibility needed. The demand for armchairs and snugglers is growing as they facilitate the creation of flexible and visually appealing zoned spaces.”
TACTILE LUXE “The quiet luxury aesthetic is here to stay, but as more of the UK embraces this trend it has evolved to focus more than just a visual look. In an unpredictable world our homes are our safe spaces and we are drawing on our interior design to amplify a feeling of wellbeing,” says Lucy. “Soft sumptuous, tactile fabrics and oversized designs are trending right now as we quite literally look to our sofa for a comforting cuddle. Neutral colours and subtle patterns or plain designs are also favoured to create a sense of serene calm from our living spaces. “Maximalism has definitely proved a hit in interiors, but the cream/beige/greige sofa really is back with a vengeance,” Lucy says. “There is a reason why neutral sofas have had such enduring appeal – quite simply they calm the mind and really pair back the visual stimulation that can dominate a living space. What is more, they never really will go out of fashion.”
CHOOSING YOUR SOFA MEASURE YOUR SPACE Start by measuring
the area where the sofa will go. Consider the length, width, and height, as well as the available pathways and clearances. This will help you determine the appropriate sofa size. CONSIDER YOUR ROOM STYLE Take into account the existing decor and style of your room. Your sofa should complement the overall aesthetics and colour scheme. DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET Decide on a budget range for your sofa. This will help narrow down your options and prevent overspending. Keep in mind that quality is often reflected in the price. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE Based on your room measurements, select a sofa size that fits comfortably within the space. Consider the number of people who will use it regularly. SELECT A STYLE Sofas come in various styles, from traditional to modern. Choose a style that matches your personal preferences and the decor of your room. PICK A FRAME MATERIAL The frame of the sofa plays a crucial role in its durability. Hardwood frames like oak or maple are sturdy and long-lasting, while particleboard or metal frames may be less durable.

DECIDE ON UPHOLSTERY Consider the type of upholstery that suits your lifestyle and preferences. Common options include fabric, leather, or synthetic materials. Think about factors such as comfort, maintenance, and how well it will hold up over time. TEST THE COMFORT Before making a purchase, sit on the sofa to test its comfort and there are various factors to bear in mind. Ensure that the seat depth, backrest height, and cushion firmness are to your liking. This is especially important if you plan to spend a lot of time on the sofa. CHECK THE SUPPORT A quality sofa should provide good support for your back and seat. Look for sofas with sinuous springs or webbing for seat support and high-density foam or downfilled cushions for comfort. EXAMINE THE CONSTRUCTION Inspect the craftsmanship of the sofa. Look for sturdy joinery, well-sewn seams, and even cushion distribution. Shake the sofa gently to check for wobbling or creaking. CONSIDER MAINTENANCE Think about how easy it is to clean and maintain the sofa. If you have children or pets – and we all know the mess they cause – you might want an option that is easy to clean and resistant to stains.

s the vibrant hues of summer have transitioned through the blaze of autumn colour, and then into winter, there is still plenty to do in the garden to maintain it and ensure the health of your plants throughout the changing seasons. Bramhall-based Creative Gardens & Driveways understand the importance of ensuring that your outdoor space remains inviting all year round. David Hadley, MD of Creative Gardens & Driveways, has shared his advice on what homeowners should be doing now to keep their gardens looking great all year round. “A typical garden landscaping project can cost upwards of £30,000 and is something that most homeowners only invest in once,” he says. “But you will continue to maintain and update your garden continually. With this in mind, here are our recommendations for easing the transition of your garden and preparing for the colder months ahead.”
TIDY UP AND CLEAR DEBRIS
Top tips from Cheshire-based Creative Gardens & Driveways on how to maintain your outdoor spots in winter
As the leaves continue to fall, take some time to clear away any surplus debris. You may want to leave dead grasses and seed heads from plants for wildlife and winter structure. However, if you prefer a tidy look, you can prune selectively and remove any unattractive dead material. To keep a fresh tidy look, be vigilant when it comes to fallen leaves alighting on light coloured paving or lawns. Swift removal will prevent paving being stained or grass damaged by the tannins in the leaves – oak leaves can be particularly bad for this. You should also remove any detached leaves that accumulate in the A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

branches or on top of evergreen hedges like yew. A layer of rotting leaves here can stifle ventilation, encourage fungal growth and lead to premature dieback. Don’t be too overzealous with your ground removal, you can leave any fall around the base of trees and shrubs, particularly at the back of a border. These will form a weed suppressing layer, eventually rotting down into the soil, improving topsoil, soil structure and the overall health of your plants. A tidy garden not only looks more appealing, but also prevents pests and diseases from taking hold.
DESIGN ELEMENTS
PREPARE FOR FROST
The colder months are the time to plan and install design features such as fencing, pergolas, or outdoor seating areas. This allows for proper integration with the overall garden layout and ensures a seamless transition into summer. “We spend many hours in initial consultations with customers, discussing their projects and goals,” David adds. “From conversations about desired features and the practicalities of maintaining completed projects, to working through intricate designs and planting choices, we take every step necessary to bring a client’s dream garden to life.” As a proud member of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI), Creative Gardens & Driveways are accredited experts in the field, and with two decades of building expertise, their passionate team of designers, landscapers and support staff is dedicated to delivering exceptional projects. Creative Gardens & Driveways latest projects can be viewed on its website. The company specialises in landscaping, gardens and driveways with every project individually tailored to the client’s requirements. From small spaces to large plots, its experienced team can create a solution to suit a range of budgets, combining knowledge of gardening techniques with an eye for aesthetics.
As temperatures drop, take precautions to protect delicate plants from frost. Bring potted plants indoors or place them in a sheltered area.
Visit creativegardensanddriveways.co.uk or call 0161 524 2455 for more information
PRUNE AND TRIM WITH DISCRETION It can be tempting to try to refresh all your existing plants by pruning dead or overgrown branches. However, this should only be done at the appropriate time of year for the individual plant concerned. For example, buddleia benefits from a later autumn prune to stop wind damage in the winter; however, cutting back lavender at this time will make it more susceptible to damage from early frosts.
114
Cover tender plants with burlap or frost cloth to shield them from chilly nights.

THE VIEW AT LINDETH FELL
ADVENTURE
HOLIDAY
Why a winter trip to Storrs Hall Hotel or Lindeth Fell Country House is a real festive treat
B
lessed with beautiful views, Storrs Hall Hotel and Lindeth Fell Country House are choice locations when it comes to taking a winter break in the Lake District. Whether you just want to enjoy the scenery from indoors, or get out and about, you couldn’t be better placed. Storrs Hall sits right on the shores of Lake Windermere, a Grade II* listed Georgian mansion, with contemporary Lakeside Hot Tub Suites and the original Boathouse converted to provide 21st century luxuries. Lindeth Fell perches on a hillside above Bowness on Windermere with views West to Coniston Old Man. A 5 star B&B, it offers more than you’d expect. Both Storrs Hall and Lindeth Fell are offering a food and drink credit on new bookings for winter breaks, up until the end of February 2024. Full details are on the website (browse their new menus while you’re there), and some dates are excluded.
For those of you looking to get outdoors, the lakes can offer adventure without any need to go near an airport. It’s called the adventure capital of the UK with good reason, and winter conditions bring a new dimension for extreme adventure seekers. There’s a ski slope on Raise, next door to Helvellyn with a ski lift, run by The Lake District Ski Club – you can buy day guest passes if you wish to go along. Helvellyn is also the mountain of choice for the Lake District National Park Authority’s Winter Mountain Skills courses, teaching you how to ice axe your way across Striding Edge in safety. You could try off-roading with Graythwaite, who have their own private course on the west shore of Windermere; they run it in an environmentally sustainable way on private, carefully maintained land on a course accredited by the British Off Road Driving Association and the International Organisation of Professional Drivers. Most fearsome and challenging of all has to be Honister’s Via Ferrata Xtreme, which
has you inching your way up and around the mountain, hundreds of feet above Honister Pass on a series of climbs and aerial walkways. There is comprehensive information about outdoor activities and indoor attractions on the ‘Things To Do’ pages on the websites. If you’re tempted, both Storrs Hall and Lindeth Fell provide a warm and welcome return whatever you choose to do (or not); with real log fires, and an abundance of home cooked food with a drink to hand. The Christmas and New Year holidays are fully booked for 2023 at Storrs Hall, they tend to get booked up well in advance, usually on the day of departure ready for the following year. Why not consider Lindeth Fell for your Christmas private house party in 2024? Exclusive Use bookings can be tailored to your requirements and the team are there to take care of you. Make the most of a winter getaway in the most spectacular corner of England. storrshall.com / lindethfell.com

“THERE'S A SENSE OF COMMUNITY, CARE, JOYFULNESS AND CREATIVITY” Q How long have you been head of St
Anne’s Fulshaw CoE Primary School and what originally attracted you to the role? A I started as the school’s headteacher on 1 September 2004, so am currently in my 20th year here. Having grown up in Wilmslow, I remember coming to the school for sports fixtures, and some of my friends also attended. I had previously worked in a range of schools – large, small, rural and urban – but when the headship was advertised at St Anne’s Fulshaw, I felt such a draw to the school and the post that I was really keen to apply. When I came to visit, I knew that this was absolutely the school for me. The sense of community, care, joyfulness and creativity that I felt from the staff and pupils was overwhelming and I was delighted to be appointed. I am only the ninth headteacher in 147 years, and the third longest-serving, so I still feel like I have big boots to fill, but this just confirms to me what a special place this school is, that people have wanted to stay in post for so long. CLARE DANIEL
Q How would you describe your
approach to teaching? A I believe very strongly that relationships are key to successful teaching and learning. If children trust the adults working with them, they are far more likely to be motivated to reach their potential, accept support openly when it is needed or to take a leap of faith when challenged. At the start of the year as a class teacher when I was getting to know my class, I always made the time to get to know the children well; to find out about their interests and hobbies, their families and what excited them – and demotivated them – about learning. I could then use what they had shared with me and what I’d observed to tailor the best pathway for each of them individually, which is what we do at St Anne’s Fulshaw too. A clear understanding of how children develop and how they learn, rooted in evidence-informed pedagogy is vital, as is excellent subject knowledge. I enjoyed teaching English, art, history and science very much and had to work harder at teaching subjects like music and design technology myself, but the message we can share with children from that experience is that we are all still learning, no matter what stage of life we are at. The best teachers I had were playful, enthusiastic and creative, had clear, high expectations and weren’t afraid of making mistakes themselves along the way. Taking a risk occasionally in my teaching has provided me with some of the best, most memorable lessons and learning over the years. Also, learning what NEVER to do again is equally as valuable – having nearly been trampled to a pulp on my first teaching practice when I said ‘Wow, children, it’s started snowing!’ and gestured towards the window! I hope that I’ve been able to use the very best practice that I’ve seen and also learn from my own mistakes to continue to grow and develop over time. We aren’t ever the finished article and I would never expect the staff at school to consider themselves that either.
Q What are the benefits of
the school being small?
A I think I could probably fill the whole
magazine answering this question, but I’ll try to be concise! Our school feels like more than a community; it is a family. Because we are small, we all eat, work and play together. No group of children are separate and one of the key features that we promote right from the start is pupils building social relationships outside their year group. We do this through our buddy system, reading partners, colour teams and whole key stage events such as performances. Our older children are exemplary role models – OFSTED graded our pupils’ behaviour and attitudes outstanding earlier this year – and they nurture our younger children, helping them to develop values and morals within a culture of nurture and caring. Our staff work with and support all of the children in school and so pupils feel confident that they have a wide pool of trusted and available adults that they can turn to if they have a concern or need help. We have

the most amazing Senior Mental Health Lead and are a flagship school for mental health provision – everybody adores Cookie, our therapy dog! We build our curriculum on the foundation of positive mental and physical health for everyone and work hard to offer the right support at the right time to all our pupils, and this depends on us knowing all of the children really well. Being small certainly helps with that. Q What would we find in a
typical classroom?
A Joy, creativity, secure attachments and
respectful relationships, work that is well planned to meet the needs of the children in the class and builds on their prior knowledge and attainment. I’d expect to see high expectations of standards achieved and also behaviour, with everyone treating each other in a kind, compassionate and tolerant way. We have 11 different languages spoken in school and children regularly arrive from across the globe, and so our children have different experiences prior to joining us. I know that our children are incredibly welcoming and go above and beyond in making new starters feel like part of our family. They also appreciate and value our diversity and differences as well as recognising all the things we have in common. We celebrate everything that all members of our school community bring to our family – pupils, families and staff – experiences and expertise abound! Throughout the school day our children have opportunities to work independently and together, depending on the task, and we encourage children to learn how to collaborate effectively and respectfully in their learning and play. We have a well-resourced school and absolutely amazing outdoor space which includes allotments, an orchard, soft fruit plants, mud gardens, landscaped play and fitness areas, large play equipment, traversing walls, football pitches, basketball hoops, a pond (safe and fenced of course) and we even have a small bee hive. We love to learn outside and the children absolutely adore all of the space that surrounds us.
Q Do you offer opportunities
outside of the classroom too?
A Yes absolutely, we enjoy class based
and whole school trips out to enhance our learning. In the last year alone we have been to the Blue Planet Aquarium, Chester Zoo and the New Vic Theatre as a whole school. We have explored Roman Chester, visited our local library, been to Parliament and on the London Eye, enjoyed cinema nights and maypole dancing, hosted a lantern walk around our local community and sung at so many local events and venues. All of our infant pupils took part in a Nativity and performed a wonderful summer show based on The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, while our junior pupils led a special Advent Service and gave us a super treat when they performed Robin and his Sherwood Hoodies in the summer. We also have special Church services through the year, including Harvest, Christmas and Easter, when all the children contribute and different classes plan and lead the events. Our children can join the School Council, our Eco Committee or become Play Leaders and Mental Health Champions, as well as taking part in extra-curricular activities from yoga and sewing to cookery and rugby. We also take our Year 2 and 3 children on a two-day residential trip to Lancashire, and our Year 5
and 6 pupils on a three day visit to the Lake District, where they can take part in outdoor and adventurous activities, team building, water-sports and develop their field skills. Q What are your pupils prepared
for when they leave you?
A The sky is the limit really! Our aim is to
send every child on to their next school as the very best version of themselves. It is our responsibility to have high expectations of every child, to identify their gifts and talents and the areas in which they will shine. We also love to give our children as many different learning opportunities as possible, both in school and off site, so that they are exposed to the broadest possible range of experiences. This gives them confidence, high self-esteem and a secure sense of who they are, what they can do and what they want to tackle next.

ueen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) and driver, Arthur Simondet, are celebrating after achieving fourth place overall in the Student Motorsport Challenge, a racing class within the BRSCC Nankang Tyre CityCar Cup Championship. The team, QE Motorsport, are thrilled to have ranked so highly amongst a field of college and university teams and to break records never seen before. This news comes as the team achieved not only a fifth place in class finish at the last race meet of the season at Silverstone, but two previous class runner up podium finishes at Croft and Anglesey. Driver Arthur says: “We’ve had an incredible season this year – I’ve mentioned it countless times already, but I’m amazed at how much the student team has evolved since Croft. At our first round, everyone was running around unsure of what to do or where to do it. Silverstone felt as if I

was driving in my primary drive, with a professional endurance racing team. The students are incredibly well-positioned going forward into 2024 and, in the meantime, we’ll relish our P4 in class.” The Collegiate launched QE Motorsport in September 2022 as part of their dedication to driving forward new and exciting extra-curricular opportunities for its students. It started when a team from Student Motorsport and a team from Oxford Brookes University visited with a kit to prepare a car and coordinated a “Pit Stop Challenge” to demonstrate what is involved in building a race car. From there, a team of 28 Year 12 students worked alongside QE staff and Race Engineer, Will Snuggs from WJS Motorsport Engineering & Trackside, to transform the standard Citroen C1 into a race-ready contender. Within three weekends, students had already helped strip the car in preparation for fitting new race parts. The car was built in time to compete at the Croft Circuit race meet, where the team managed a fantastic
weekend, placing second in class in the team’s first ever race, and fourth place in class in both the second and third races. Matt Clayton, Head of Co-Curricular at QE, says: “QE Motorsport has been a groundbreaking project that reflects our commitment to providing high quality co-curricular learning opportunities. It has provided our students with a unique opportunity that promotes teamwork, critical thinking under pressure and other future-ready skills that will serve them well in their academic and professional pursuits. To see the entire team embrace the challenge with enthusiasm, resilience and a real sense of camaraderie and collaboration has been wonderful and for it to lead to a championship fourth place in class in our first ever race season is outstanding.” QUEEN ETHELBURGA'S To find out more about QE Motorsport, the school, and its Co-Curricular options, follow @queenethelburgas on Instagram or visit qe.org

TRAIL Robin Scott-Elliot’s Finding Treasure Island weaves a gripping narrative around the boy and the handdrawn map that inspired the epic 19th-century tale B y LIBBY NORMAN
R
obert Louis Stevenson’s yarn about sea travels and pots of gold is so embedded in culture that it pretty much defines how we visualise pirates and buccaneers. Robin Scott-Elliot has long been a huge Stevenson fan, but this one’s not his favourite. “I love Kidnapped, which I read several times as a child,” he says. “Treasure Island suffers because it has become – a bit like Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde – so well-known it is like a cliché. You know, the pirate with one leg, ‘Arrgh’...” What piqued Robin’s interest though was reading about the origins of Treasure Island. It all began on a holiday in Braemar, in the Scottish Highlands, when Stevenson’s
American-born stepson Sam (aka Lloyd) was sitting staring out of the window at the rain. “Boredom, that’s how Stevenson began to write the story,” he says. “He drew this map. I just loved that idea – it really caught with me straight away and I thought, ‘that’s a really good starting point for a story’.” The familiarity of the situation was not lost on him. “This is great for anyone who has grown up in Britain – or who has been on holiday in Britain – when it pours with rain and you’re there, staring out of the window.” Finding Treasure Island – written for the 8-12 age group – is constructed as if it were Sam’s missing memoir. In true adventure style, there’s a mysterious meeting in Paris uncovering the long-buried text. The story itself centres on a map, plus there’s treasure to hunt down in the Highlands hills and a

Weaving real history into a novel presents its own issues though – where does the real person stop and the fictional hero begin? In researching the novel, Robin learned a lot about Sam Osbourne. “The real Sam is a very interesting and quite sad character,” he says. Sam’s father was a larger-than-life figure who would disappear on goldrushes and other wild adventures. “There’s one story about him – they were told he had been crushed to death by a bear, which was a great way to go, but turned out not to be true and he popped up again.” His mother Fanny was also a strong personality, with her own successful magazine writing career, and she eventually tired of her husband’s wild ways. She left US shores for Europe, meeting Robert Louis Stevenson in Paris. “She was also a really divisive character – a lot of Stevenson’s friends couldn’t stand her. I don’t think she was particularly maternal, and his dad wasn’t particularly paternal, so I think Sam latched on to Stevenson.” Later, Sam would travel with his stepfather and write books with him – also one about him. Robin found the book in an American university library: “He clearly worships him.” All of this larger-than-life history couldn’t be fitted into Finding Treasure
ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON WITH KING KALAKAUA OF HAWAII
“I SEE SAM AS A CHARACTER WHO’S DESPERATE TO FIT IN. HE’S DESPERATE TO FIND A FAMILY AND A PLACE” charismatic girl called Jen who ignites Sam’s spirit of adventure, and ultimately gives him courage and resolve. Robin, a sports journalist for some two decades, was inspired to switch to writing children’s books by his two daughters. He’d started out with a book for adults and they begged him to write
something for them when he’d finished. He always used to invent stories for them anyway – often on long car journeys from London up to visit relations in Mull. Now Robin and his family live in Helensburgh and his daughters are teenagers. He still runs plots by them. “You have to be able to get a story into a sentence or a short paragraph and if you can’t get it into that then the story has probably not worked. I say to them, ‘I’ve got an idea’, and they usually roll their eyes, but then they listen. You can tell, even as you’re halfway through, if it works.” His passion for telling stories is matched by his interest in the less welltrammelled bits of history. “The stories that are beyond kings and queens and treaties – if you look for them, they are there and they are great stories to tell.” A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

THE BOOK IS SET IN THE LOCATION WHERE TREASURE ISLAND BEGAN
“BOREDOM, THAT’S HOW STEVENSON BEGAN TO WRITE THE STORY. HE DREW THIS MAP – I JUST LOVED THAT IDEA” Island, but it’s there as a context and certainly shaped the novel’s young hero. “When you’re a teenager, whatever your life as a teenager, you still have an optimism,” he says. “I see Sam as a character who’s desperate to fit in. He’s desperate to find a family and a place.” Sam’s love of the Scottish Highlands – and his yearning for adventure – makes a convincing fictional prelude to the adventurous real life to come. This story encourages readers to find out more. Robin has included archive pictures of the real Sam Osbourne and the stepfather he so adored. “The dream for all my stories is that when children finish, they think, ‘I’d like to find out a little bit more about this’.” Certainly, there’s a whole lot more to discover. Readers might also go on and read Treasure Island or Kidnapped – even Jekyll and Hyde. “One of the extraordinary things about Stevenson, and why perhaps he wasn’t
put on the pedestal he deserves, is that he wrote for children as equals. And he was one of the first writers to do that.” Robin began imagining his story about the boy staring out of the window shortly before lockdown. He had planned to visit the real cottage where Stevenson began Treasure Island (you can stay there, it’s now a holiday cottage), but fate intervened. There was, ROBIN SCOTT-ELLIOT
however, a curious coincidence as he and everyone else sat at home staring out of windows. “When lockdown started one of the first things the BBC put on their education website was an audiobook of Treasure Island,” says Robin. “There were two adult versions already up on BBC Sounds.” This, he believes, sums up Stevenson’s gift as a storyteller. “Stevenson has got more people into reading in the last century than certainly any other Scottish writer – and he’d be up there with most British writers.” As for that hand-drawn map that led on to Treasure Island, it is who knows where. Actually, Robin has a theory on that. He believes it might be languishing somewhere in an American university library, just waiting to be uncovered by a modern-day treasure hunter. why everyone is talking about…
The Enchanted Christmas Treasury A special launch this month in Chester brings together 24 authors, all with a story to tell this festive season
G
et ready to experience a magical journey through the festive season like no other. Twenty-four authors have come together to create a special collection of diverse and inclusive stories in one special book to celebrate the joy of the holidays for every day of advent. The Enchanted Christmas Treasury (aimed at readers aged five to eight) features stories of ninja nans, brave pups and fallen angels finding their way back to the top of the Christmas tree, in tales that will charm everyone. All the proceeds raised from sales of The Enchanted Christmas Treasury will help fund the work of SENStory, a UK-wide not-for-profit Community Interest Company, helping children, young people, and families with Special Educational Needs navigate their journeys in nature through therapy, play, learning and training opportunities. The Enchanted Christmas Treasury collaborative book project has been curated by Abigail Horne. She says: “The Enchanted Christmas Treasury celebrates the spirit of inclusivity, diversity, and kindness – themes that are especially important during the holiday season. Bringing together these 24 authors from all over the world, to create and write such beautiful stories has been so special – as I know what a lasting impact this project can and will have.” Stories in The Enchanted Christmas Treasury include:
ANGEL’S ATTIC ADVENTURE - Abigail Horne
When an accident leaves Angel, Drummer Boy, and Little Bear in the attic instead of on the Christmas tree, they must learn to work together to get where they belong as the most glorious ornaments on the tree. Angel learns that other decorations are equally as important too.
ABIGAIL HORNE
“It celebrates the spirit of inclusivity, diversity and kindness” A SUPER KRISH-MAS - Bhavin Bhagalia
Being the new kid at school can be scary. So scary that Krish wishes he was a superhero, not afraid of anything. But when faced with a real-life problem, Krish realises that not all heroes wear capes and even the new kid can be brave.
THE MIRACLE LIGHT - Debbie and Michael Marks
Everyone seems to have a Christmas tree except for Rafi. When his friend, Bobby, doesn’t understand why not, Rafi invites him around to discover the wonder of Chanukah. The Enchanted Christmas Treasury is available on Amazon and Waterstones.com, with a special launch party due to be held on 3 December at The Old Palace Chester.
