h the Christmas issue. Are you feeling it yet? In any normal year, working in publishing kind of kills the Christmas spirit before it has even started, after spending hours poring over gift guides, deciding on decorations to feature, and feasting on food shots from chefs and restaurants all over the county. By the time December arrives, you are already bloated. But this year is different. I have tried so hard not to mention the pandemic too much in the magazine over the past few months; however after last year's late lockdown, ruining Christmas plans for millions, it has meant that this year we need to embrace anything festive that comes our way. So inside you will find pages and pages of gift guides, which were a joy to put together, the places where you can relax and let someone else do the cooking on 25 December, and some inspiration for how to deck the walls to make this year a real stand out. And that's it, 2021 has come and gone. It's not been all great, in fact it's been pretty tough for most, but this magazine came into my life and for that reason this will be a very merry Christmas.

Started in early 2019, 4G have played many gigs, covering quite a large area of the South East and including venues such as pubs, clubs, bingo halls, corporate functions and on very rare occasions back gardens.
Head to the House of Fine Art in London for a new solo exhibition by Bran Symondson. The former soldier, whose powerful reportage pieces on Afghanistan appeared in The Sunday Times, continues to build a successful contemporary art career. Events this year compelled Symondson to revisit his experiences of Afghanistan and the result includes thought-provoking sculptures, such as pictured above, created from de-commissioned AK47s exploring issues of conflict, environment and the spoils of war. DETAIL
Celebrated chef Clodagh McKenna on her new cookbook, enjoying Christmas dinner and why she can’t get enough of her local Newbury favourites By MARK KEBBLE
F
or anyone who has watched Berkshire local Clodagh McKenna on This Morning, you will be familiar with her enthusiastic personality. Rustling up dishes in no time at all in front of a million viewers on live TV, McKenna has been known to break out into song while dealing with the time constraints placed on her. So it comes as little surprise that when talking about deadlines and the fact she only started working on her new cookbook at the start 2021, she makes mince meat of any kind of pressure. “I had a lot of fun doing it,” she says with a smile. In Minutes was partly inspired by her work on ITV’s flagship morning show, but also an ever-growing and inquisitive following on social media. “With This Morning, all the dishes have to be fast to make, with accessible ingredients and need to be do-able, as we have got such a wide audience,” she says in her familiar Irish twang. “Also, on Instagram, I have this
feedback constantly from people about time. How long does that take to cook? Do you have alternatives that are faster to cook in the evening? I said to my publishers about doing a book that had recipes that can be cooked in 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes. Those were the times I had in my head, but I thought that surely there’s been a book done like this already. I started researching and found that wasn’t the case, so I said to my publishers the book is called In Minutes and they got it immediately.” Fast forward ten months later and In Minutes has been published to great fanfare. For someone who isn’t a great cook (me), the book is wonderfully accessible, well designed and doesn’t skimp on the number of recipes you can rustle up at home. “We spent so much time researching different cuisines,” McKenna explains. “There’s quite a lot of Asian and Italian cooking in the book because they are really simple. I remember someone who I worked with on a previous book saying to me that I should look into Japanese tempuras
because they are so fast. I thought are they really? What do you think?” Wouldn’t even attempt it, I say. “Exactly. Then I started researching it and testing out recipes, and then I thought why isn’t everyone doing Japanese tempuras? They are so delicious and you can cook them in 10 minutes.” Classics, too, are reinvented in the book. “Spaghetti Bolognese is such a popular dish, but to do a really good one you have to cook it for a few hours. I thought surely there must be a way to quicken that process up. I spent a whole day coming up with a speedy spiced spaghetti Bolognese, looking at how to make it more flavoursome faster. We came up with about six, then knocked that down to the one in the book, which is gorgeous. It’s about adding in more spices like smoked paprika to get that flavour going faster, and dried oregano, chilli flakes and sundried tomatoes, which have a really intense flavour that you usually only get after a couple of hours. It was uncovering all these tricks that speed up the process of a lot of dishes that we love.” A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

CULTURE • INTERVIEW NOT A BAD SPOT FOR A WEDDING
Discussing the number of recipes in the book, McKenna suggests that was all part of the fun in putting it together. “I have definitely been in a recipe developing bubble over the past year,” she laughs. “For This Morning I have to come up with five new recipes every week, and I do a lot of brand collaborations where they approach me and I come up with recipes for them. Now everybody comes to me for the same thing: it’s always fast, easy, family-orientated and accessible ingredients. This was the most exciting book I have ever done because I am so immersed in it right now, whereas two years ago [when she released her Suppers to Celebrate the Seasons cookbook] I didn’t have a TV show I was cooking on every week. When you are in that bubble and it’s your work, the recipes just keep flowing.” Talking about home life in Newbury with husband Harry Herbert [they wed in the summer at Highclere Castle], it sounds
like it’s always a busman’s holiday – “I cook every single night,” she says – helped in no part by her amazing kitchen garden. “It’s brilliant,” she enthuses. “I never gardened like this before, it all happened over lockdown. I started growing our own vegetables – yes, I was one of those people – and I absolutely love it. I spend Sundays gardening. To see something growing from seed and having that first harvest from it, and then coming up with something to cook with it, it’s just brilliant.” McKenna will undoubtedly be making full use of what’s at her disposal when Christmas comes around. Unsurprisingly, given how this interview has gone, she won’t feel the pressure when it comes to Christmas Day cooking. “We always have a big Christmas,” she says. “Our families will be around and I always cook. I get my turkey from Griffins butchers in Newbury, and then I get smoked salmon sent over from Ireland, oysters too, and all the rest I try to do as locally as possible. Because it’s my work, I don’t find it stressful.” Maybe there’s an idea here for her next cookbook… In Minutes by Clodagh McKenna, published by Kyle Books, priced £20. Photography by Dora Kazmierak. C LO DAG H M C K E N NA PICKS OUT HER FAVO U R I T E R E C I P E S F RO M I N M I N U T E S A N D H E R T O P LO C A L P I C K S Are there three dishes you particularly love right now? That’s so hard… Tonight I would love to have the chicken katsu ramen. I would do the Japanese tempura with soy dipping sauce as that’s just banging with flavours. And the linguine puttanesca, that’s a meat free one. It’s so simple to make it, all I have to do is get my pasta on cooking and then add some garlic, tomatoes, anchovies, chilli flakes and capers. It’s just bursting with flavour. If you went out to eat, where would you head to? I love cooking so much, and every time I think we will go out, I think “oh that means I don’t get to experiment with this recipe or that recipe”. But my favourite is The Wellington Arms, I love that place, it’s my number one spot. The food is fantastic. Where else in Berkshire do you love visiting… One is definitely The Wellington Arms. Another would be the Newbury Racecourse, we go there probably once a week. All the walks around here are amazing. Beacon Hill is my favourite place to trek up to the top, and have a picnic up there.

XSCAPE WILL OFFER FUN THIS FESTIVE SEASON
Q How great is it to be staging a pantomime again? A It feels wonderful! At Milton Keynes Theatre we’re known for putting on a big pantomime with star casting, brilliant production values, and this year will be no exception. Having had a break in 2020, our whole team (and I’m sure our audiences) have sorely missed panto season. Last year we were one of a few theatres in the country selected to host a socially distanced pantomime with support from The National Lottery. Sadly, after working hard to get everything in place, we were unable to go ahead. So, this year it feels extra special to welcome the return of panto.

Q Why should we be excited about Jack and The Beanstalk? A It will be our first panto to star Ashley Banjo and Diversity, who of course are extremely talented dancers and brilliant TV personalities. They’ll be supported by an amazing cast including comedian and magician Pete Firman, and Gina Murray, who starred in our 2018 pantomime, Robin Hood. It’s going to have all the usual silliness, laughs, music, magic, special effects and fun that audiences have come to expect. I’m mostly excited to see our school groups return. It’s so heartwarming to see children, some of whom haven’t experienced theatre before, get caught up in the action shouting “he’s behind you!” at the top of their lungs! Q Can we expect any surprises? A Well, I can’t say much, but yes!
Diversity will be choreographing all new routines for this show, so I’m sure they’ll have some tricks up their sleeves.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK WILL FEATURE ASHLEY BANJO AND DIVERSITY
“This year it feels extra special to welcome the return of panto” Q How do you look back on 2021 for yourself and the theatre? A Theatres are meant to be brightly lit and filled with music and laughter, so the first half of 2021 was a bit lonely and depressing. Most of the team were on furlough and there was just three of us holding the fort, so to speak. From May we were finally able to start bringing back our wonderful team members. I’m incredibly proud of the whole team for the way they adapted so quickly to coming back to work, for their positivity and for the part they all played in getting the building ready for our visiting companies and audiences. Re-opening the theatre, on Sunday 25 July, after 500 days of closure, was a special and unforgettable moment. Q During the various lockdowns,
did you feel the support of the local Milton Keynes community? A Very much so. We were overwhelmed by the support from our community and they THE CENTRE:MK CHRISTMAS PARADE IS BACK THIS YEAR
really helped us through this period. We loved reading all the positive messages of support on our social media channels. But more than anything we’re grateful that after a long period of closure, audiences are coming back to our beautiful theatre, to be amused, inspired, and entertained. We were recently delighted to launch our Local Heroes scheme, offering a discount on selected shows to NHS workers, teachers, armed forces, and other professions. It’s great to be able to give a little back to those who’ve worked so hard over these last few months. Q Will you have much time off
over the Christmas period? A I wish! We only really stop for Christmas Day, and our shows around Christmas are some of the busiest of the year. But I usually manage to get a few days off for some quality family time. Q Do you also live in Buckinghamshire? A I live nearby in Hertfordshire, but have
worked in Milton Keynes for almost seven years. I love the green spaces and parks in Milton Keynes. Some people have this idea that it’s all concrete and metal, but it’s one of the greenest cities in the UK.
Q Does the area come
alive at Christmas?
A It certainly does. You really know it’s
Christmas when Centre:MK hosts its Santa’s Parade event and opening of the grotto. We usually have a few panto cast members there to spread the Christmas cheer! And our business improvement district, MyMiltonKeynes, put on a brilliant light switch-on event in November.
THERE WILL BE SPECIAL CHRISTMAS EVENTS AT BLETCHLEY PARK
Q If possible, can you pick out
three places near you that you love visiting at Christmas? A I always do an annual visit to Xscape for a refresher ski lesson with my family. It’s a real treat and my children look forward to it every year. I’ve heard about some great Christmas events at Bletchley Park and Waddesdon Manor too, so I’m planning to visit both this December. Q What are you looking
forward to most in 2022?
A Our 2022 programme of shows is
already shaping up to be one of the best we’ve seen in a while. We’ll see the return of Les Misérables, one of the best loved musicals in the world. We were so happy to have the show in 2019 as it rarely tours, so to see it return next year is fantastic. We’re also hosting the very first UK tours of Dreamgirls and Bat Out of Hell. We really hope you’ll all join us at the theatre in the year ahead.

STUBBINGS GROW TREES IN SCOTLAND
STUBBINGS
SPRUCE
UP
Absolutely visits five of the best local outlets for Christmas trees
46
Questions are often raised regarding sustainability when buying a cut Christmas tree. After all, cutting down trees appears to be the very antithesis of sustainability in a world battling with de-forestation and climate change. Artificial trees are not the answer. Such trees must be reused at least ten times before their carbon footprint becomes less than buying equivalent fresh cut trees. And don’t forget that magical memories are made when choosing a Christmas tree with your loved ones. This year Stubbings continue to address concerns regarding sustainability with a number of key measures: 1. For each Christmas tree sold at Stubbings, one tree will be planted in the Amazon region by One Tree Planted, the US based charity with a mission to help global reforestation efforts. 2. Stubbings sell UK grown trees (where possible) and ensure they are sustainably sourced. For each tree cut at least one tree is replanted in its place. 3. A council recycling collection point is provided after the season for any trees returned to the Nursery in early January. 4. Each year Stubbings sell more pot grown trees encouraging customers to plant out in their gardens after the festive season. Stubbings stock over eight different varieties of Christmas trees in both cut and pot grown formats, so you’ll be sure to find the perfect festive accompaniment for your home. The Christmas Boutique is a treasure trove of festive decorations and lights with products from designers such as Gisela Graham, Giftware Trading and many more. Trees, lights and a carefully selected range of decorations are also available via their online shop for local delivery. To check out the festive events they have planned, and for further information visit stubbingsnursery.co.uk. The Nursery shop & lovely Café are open seven days a week, and are conveniently located just off the A404M on the west side of Maidenhead

CHRISTMAS • TREES
“THE MOST POPULAR CHOICE AT CHRISTMAS IS A REAL, CUT TREE” ENGLEFIELD GARDEN CENTRE
Englefield Garden Centre is managed by Affinity Trust. The Trust supports over 900 people with learning disabilities across England and Scotland, enabling them to live as independently as possible. Englefield Garden Centre sources its Christmas trees from Jade Cliff, a local supplier, and they also hand make and decorate their Christmas wreaths too. Open Mon–Sat 9am-5pm and Sun 10am–4pm. Englefield Garden Centre, The Street, Englefield, Theale, Berkshire, RG7 5ES. 0118 930 4898 / englefieldgardencentre.co.uk
HILLIER GARDEN CENTRES
One of the favourite times of the year at Hillier Garden Centres is mid-end
November when thousands of real Christmas trees arrive at their Centres and they set up their magical tree ‘forests’. All their premium quality, UK grown trees are hand-picked by horticultural experts from their dedicated UK Christmas tree growers. The most popular choice at Christmas is a real, cut tree. Their extensive range of top-quality trees includes the classic Nordmann Fir along with more unusual varieties such as the Blue Spruce with striking silver-green and icy blue varieties. Find them at Marlow, Newbury and Sunningdale – see more at hillier.co.uk
BEACONSFIELD CRICKET CLUB
Part of the Christmas tradition for many local families is the annual visit to Beaconsfield Cricket Club to buy their Christmas tree. This year's offering is the Nordmann Fir, available in a range of sizes from 2ft through to 12ft, and cutting to size on site is available if you fall in love with a tree that is a little too tall. If you are looking for a tree that is rich in colour, has dense foliage, rounded non-drop needles, a light fragrance and will last the entirety of the festive season then this is the place to go. Available onsite too is a selection of wreaths for your front door along with stands and, of course, advice on how to keep your tree looking its best until the twelfth night. beaconsfieldcc.com
THE TREE BARN
The Tree Barn, Christmas Common, sell a wide variety of trees, practically all of which are grown on their family-run farm. All of their trees are cut just a few days before coming into the barn, where you can hand-pick your Christmas tree ready to be wrapped up by their elves. Whether you’re looking for a popular Nordmann Fir, or a delicate Serbian Spruce, The Tree Barn has a tree for you. You can also find a huge range of decorations, lights and stands in their festive shop next door. Weekday visits recommended to avoid long queues at weekends. You can also order your tree to be delivered via thetreebarn.co.uk

DE VERE PRESENT A CHEQUE TO NHS CHARITIES TOGETHER
CHESHAM BOIS COMMON
Three KINGS
We cast the spotlight on the local charities who stand tall with their amazing work – but they need your help too
C
haritable causes are important all-year round, but at Christmas the spotlight really shines on the great work that they all do. Our county boasts many great organisations who are doing unbelievable things, so in this special section where we have suggested some fine gifts to buy, perhaps there is something else you can spend your money on this Christmas.
THE DASH CHARITY
This is a local charity with a name to capture their mission. Supporting people across Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire, they specialise in supporting anyone of any age or background experiencing any form of domestic abuse including physical, sexual, financial, emotional abuse, coercive control and harassment. Domestic abuse can affect anyone and if this is happening to you, they will provide the confidential, emotional support and practical help you need to stay safe and recover. They provide refuge accommodation to those at highest risk and community support for those who need to stay
local. Along with a helpline, children’s support service, educational and training programmes, they make our communities safer, ensure people get the help they need and ensure survivors thrive once again. The Dash Charity support over 1,500 people each year, but the pandemic has triggered a UK-wide escalation in domestic abuse and The Dash Charity has seen referrals to their services soar. Much of their work is reliant on funding and donations, so they need your help. If you would like to contribute to this life-saving and life-changing work, please donate via their website at thedashcharity.org.uk or contact info@thedashcharity.org.uk
OPEN SPACES SOCIETY
The Henley-based Open Spaces Society is Britain’s oldest national conservation body, founded in 1865 as the Commons Preservation Society working throughout England and Wales, writes general secretary Kate Ashbrook. Its founders went on to form the National Trust 30 years later. It advises its members on protecting green spaces, commons and public paths, and steps in where necessary. For example, it helped to prevent the creation of a
superfluous access-road across Chesham Bois Common in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which threatened to degrade this attractive, wooded space enjoyed by local people. The society is a small and nimble charity, ever ready to defend threatened spaces and paths. It takes up hundreds of cases each year and, in championing its cause, it lobbies parliament and local authorities. It has no public funding and relies on subscriptions, donations and legacies to support its vital work. Please visit oss.org.uk to find out how you can help and for more information
DE VERE AND NHS CHARITIES TOGETHER
Rather than asking for donations, here’s one local success story of money donated. De Vere, a collection of historic mansion house estates and distinctive contemporary hotels that includes De Vere Wokefield Estate near Reading, and De Vere Beaumont Estate in Old Windsor, has donated £560,000 to NHS Charities Together to help NHS staff, volunteers, and patients at the centre of the COVID-19 pandemic. De Vere’s donation will help support NHS staff, volunteers and patients in key areas including welfare and wellbeing, assistance for patients leaving hospital, and long-term mental health support for NHS workers. For information on De Vere and the charitable work they do, please visit devere.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

SOMETHING SPECIAL RARE CHAMPAGNE
True to the Rare Champagne signature, Rare Millésime 2008 holds unlimited potential for growth, youth and complexity. Rare Millésime 2008 imparts the fervour of an infinite spring. This Champagne is a crystal-clear, light gold in colour. The initial nose shines with the pure vivacity of this vintage, showing pronounced aromas of orange blossom, hyacinth and white flowers, with notes of just-ripe Williams pear, fresh coconut, almond, and tangerine. Saline and smoky hints balance the nose perfectly. The palate is crisp and precise, with citrus and tropical fruit lingering on the long, complex finish. rare-champagne.com

THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT WILL BE ALIVE AND WELL AT CLIVEDEN
“Cliveden has celebrated this time of year with style, grace and comfort throughout its history”
I
s there a better venue suited to Christmas parties than Cliveden? “When a house is as beautiful as Cliveden, it is only right that it has been at the centre of so many moments in history,” says general manager, Francisco Macedo. “With distinguished guests from Queen Victoria to Winston Churchill, and owners as characterful as Nancy Astor, through to duels and political scandal, Cliveden’s history is drenched in glamour, intrigue and drama.” There is a palpable sense of history in a house that, for over 350 years, has been dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure, power and politics. Little wonder, then, that Christmas here is quite something. “Cliveden has celebrated this time of year with style, grace and comfort throughout its amazing history and its Christmas House Party is legendary,” Macedo whets the appetite. “Cliveden continues the English tradition of roaring log fires, festive decorations and a need for pure indulgence, fine cuisine, and unrivalled service and hospitality.” Dining at Cliveden, currently overseen by executive head chef Christopher Hannon, has long been memorable, either in the classical setting of The Cliveden Dining
THE DINING OFFERING IS ALWAYS SPECIAL
Room, or the more informal Astor Grill, with its mix of American and British dishes reminiscent of Cliveden’s diverse owners and residents. Unsurprisingly, they are going all out for Christmas Day. “Lunch starts with Champagne on arrival,” Macedo starts, “and a delicious citrus-cured sea trout or shallot tart tatin. The main course is roasted Copas Farm turkey with traditional accompaniments, or roast rib or longhorn beef, or a very festive nut roast. Christmas Day lunch would not be complete without Cliveden’s own Christmas pudding with brandy sauce and cinnamon ice cream, or chocolate and passion fruit Yule log. “Our love of locally sourced and fresh produce means our three-course a la carte and seven-course tasting menus [offered at The Cliveden Dining Room] are governed by English ingredients and guided by the seasons,” Macedo adds. “It is vital to our business to use seasonal
products and also very important to look at our carbon footprint – the best way to do this is to use local suppliers and products wherever we can.” There’s plenty more going on at Cliveden over Christmas bar the amazing food. Their three-night all-inclusive party covers traditional carols sung in front of the fire in the Great Hall, midnight mass celebrated at the local parish church, a Christmas Day walk around the National Trust gardens whilst lunch is prepared, and a fun-filled Boxing Day featuring a treasure hunt, live jazz, butlers’ tour, afternoon tea and a Champagne celebration dinner. They certainly don’t do things by half. Their famed festive afternoon tea will be served up until 31 December, before plans kick in for New Year’s Eve. “That is also celebrated in style at Cliveden,” Macedo smiles. “A two-night inclusive House Party starts on 31 December and features a lively mix of wine tastings, afternoon teas, celebration dinners, live music and dancing, a programme of activities and of course a traditional Scottish piper playing Auld Lang Syne to herald the arrival of the new year.” After the damp squib of 2020, it’s evident everyone at Cliveden will be pulling out all the stops to make 2021 memorable for all the right reasons. “After the many challenges we have all faced, we want our guests and our team at Cliveden to simply enjoy the festive season this year,” Macedo says. “The very best way to do this is through breaking bread together and enjoying the company of friends, family and loved ones.” Let’s get the party started. FA R E Some Christmas recipes from Daylesford Organic
Leftover turkey and ham pie Serves 6
There is no better way to celebrate Christmas leftovers than with a creamy pie with a thick, crumbly pastry – and we believe, that a homemade herbed, buttery shortcrust pastry is the best of all pastries to use. Serve warm with buttered cabbage and grain mustard.
INGREDIENTS To make the pastry • 275g plain flour • 130g butter, cubed • 1 tbsp thyme leaves, roughly chopped • 1 egg yolk, beaten
• 1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons of milk • salt and pepper For the filling: • 1 medium leek, haled lengthways and roughly chopped • 1 celery stick, roughly chopped • 6 shallots, peeled and quartered • 2 tsp olive oil or butter • 250g mushrooms, roughly chopped • 1 tbsp thyme leaves, roughly chopped • 100ml white wine • 400g leftover turkey (brown and white meat), shredded or cut into 2cm pieces • 150g leftover ham, cut into 2cm cubes For the white sauce • 50ml butter • 50g plain flour • 550ml milk • 2 bay leaves
METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C. Begin by making the pastry. Sift the flour into a bowl and add 1
2
the butter, thyme, a generous pinch of salt and a good twist of black pepper. Rub the mixture together with your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and stir together until a smooth dough begins to form – if the dough looks too dry and crumbly, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it comes together. Shape into a round, wrap in greaseproof paper and rest in the fridge until ready to use. 3 Place a large pan over a medium heat and add the leek, celery, shallot and oil or butter. Lightly season with salt and pepper and sauté for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables begin to soften. Increase the heat a little and add the mushrooms and thyme, stirring for a further 3–4 minutes until the mushrooms start to brown. Add the wine and continue to cook until the liquid has reduced by about a half. Transfer the mixture to a pie or casserole dish and stir through the cooked turkey and ham. 4 Return the pan to the heat and melt the butter for the white sauce before whisking through the flour. Whisk over the heat for a minute or so before gradually adding the milk, whisking all the time to avoid any lumps forming. When all of the milk has been incorporated, add the bay leaves, season generously and continue to whisk over the heat until a lovely, thick sauce forms. Remove and discard the bay leaves and pour the white sauce over the turkey ham and leek mixture and stir together, being sure to check the seasoning once more. 5 Lightly flour a cool, clean work surface and roll out the pastry, turning regularly as you roll it into a shape that will neatly fit your dish. Roll until it is about 0.5cm thick, then gently lift it and place it over your dish. Press it into the edges of the dish before removing any excess. Re-roll the excess and cut into shapes of your choice – leaves, stars, crosses or hearts. Arrange the shapes over the top of the pastry and brush all over with the egg wash (the egg and milk mixture). Bake the pie for 25–35 minutes until the top is golden and the pastry is cooked through. 6 Serve warm with wilted seasonal greens, grain mustard and a creamy mash. Ginger millionaire slice Makes 25-30 small bites
With a thick, lightly salted date caramel and a textured nutty base of almonds and ginger biscuits, this ginger millionaire slice is the perfect festive treat to have with a cup of tea or an ideal homemade gift when presented in a box or brown paper bag tied with string.
INGREDIENTS To make the base • 250g ginger biscuits, crushed • 240g skinned almonds, roughly chopped
• 50g shelled pistachios • 50g candied ginger • grated zest of 1 orange • 200g unsalted butter, melted To make the caramel • 250g pitted Medjool dates • 100g smooth almond butter • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 tsp ground ginger • pinch of ground cloves • 1/4 tsp sea salt • 100g unsalted butter To make the topping • 250g dark chocolate
METHOD 1 For the base, pulse the ginger biscuits in a food processor to small chunks. Add the remaining ingredients and lightly pulse until incorporated. 2 Grease and line a brownie tin with baking parchment and
pour in the mixture. Spread it around the tray and press into the edges until even and smooth, then place in the fridge to set. 3 Place all of the ingredients for the caramel in a high-speed blender and blend until you have a thick, smooth paste. 4 Remove the tray from the fridge and spread over your layer of caramel, using a palette knife dipped in hot water to smooth the top, returning the tray to the fridge once more. 5 Melt the chocolate by placing it in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water (do not allow the base of the bowl to touch the water). Pour the melted chocolate over the caramel and return the tray to the fridge to set for 1-2 hours. 6 Once set, cut into neat slices or chunks to serve or gift. daylesford.com

Q Have Hobbs of Henley run special Christmas cruises in previous years? A Yes, every Christmas we run a variety of festive cruises. We keep the firm favourites every year, such as the Santa Cruises and the Christmas Party cruises, and add new ones along the way such as Festive Afternoon Teas, Wreath Making, Christmas River Roasts, and Pop Up Fine Dining with well-known local chefs and many more.

Q What are you most excited about with regards to this year’s cruises? A The fact that we are actually able to hold them! For obvious reasons last year we were only able to do a few cruises as we were in between lockdowns, so it is fantastic to be fully operational again this year. We are of course still taking precautions where we can to keep everyone as safe as possible from COVID-19. Q Hobbs of Henley is over 150 years old. How would you say the company has evolved in that time? A We have obviously moved with the times offering a wider range of boating experiences and of course with our gin and branded merchandise, but essentially we are still doing what we initially set out to do and that is providing people with access to the river and fine hospitality.

THE CELEBRATORY MR HOBBS 150 GIN
Q What’s the story behind Mr Hobbs Gin? A In 1870 Harry Hobbs, founder of Hobbs
and Sons (now Hobbs of Henley) and publican of The Ship Hotel, was renowned throughout the town for his flamboyant beard and high-spirited nature. Frequently spotted sipping from his wood-rimmed drinking flask, Mr Hobbs was forever throwing river parties along the banks of the Thames in Henley. He also hired out his boats for like-minded members of the public to host their own shindigs. When we were perusing our business archives, records pointed us towards the rumours that Harry had been distilling his own gin back in the day and it inspired our journey to follow in his footsteps. We started to investigate local botanicals and embark on creating our own gin as a salute to the man who started it all and to mark the 150th anniversary of our family business.
Q What special launches do you have on offer this festive season? A We are just about to launch our latest product in time for Christmas, which we are super excited about and just know people are going to love. Our Spiced Plum Gin Liqueur is made with Winslow plums and a blend of traditional Christmas spices including ginger, clove, cinnamon and star anise. It’s the perfect drink to curl up with and enjoy in front of the fire on cold winter nights. It is totally delicious served all on its own, but equally fantastic as an accompaniment to a glass of fizz – just perfect for the festive period. Q Why did the company branch out into fashion earlier this year? A For many years we have been asked by our customers if we sold any branded merchandise to buy to take away after their experience with us. We have always had
“It’s the perfect drink to curl up with and enjoy in front of the fire”
THE CHRISTMAS CRUISES ARE ALWAYS A HIT
branded hats, t-shirts and polo shirts for our staff to wear, but never anything for the public. So we decided to explore our options, and with a local designer and branded merchandise company ‘Firefly’, we came up with a contemporary design and some gorgeous clothing. Sustainable fashion was incredibly important to us, therefore our garments are not only 100% organic cotton, but also made from recycled materials. Q How would you sum up the Henley 1870 collection? A With a contemporary design and great colours these gorgeously soft, high quality garments are easy and comfortable to wear – and because they are sustainable they make a guilt free purchase! Q This Christmas, why are you supporting the River Thames Society? A We are donating £1 for every garment sold to River Thames Society because they are a charity that are close to our hearts. Their main aim is to protect the natural beauty of the River Thames which, as a boating company, is incredibly important to us. Q Are you able to reveal any plans for 2022 just yet? A We hope to add to our branded merchandise range with a couple more items, plus we have some exciting new collaborations with DJs and some wellknown local chefs. Watch this space...

For brides that have limited time, the boutique sells many of their dresses off the rail, which can be bought and taken away the same day, and can be purchased at greatly reduced prices – many of the off the rail dresses are less than half the original selling price. Dress prices vary depending on order gowns or off the rail gowns, so they can range between £350 to £1,595. “It is such an amazing moment to see my brides face light up when she finds 'The One',” says Lisa. “It such a magical feeling and one I am very privileged to witness.” Call now to make an appointment and take advantage of their 10% discount to use on bridal gown orders only placed before 31 January, 2022.

Q How did you get into the
hair styling industry?
A My journey started 16 years ago when
I was just 15-years-old. I started as an apprentice in a hair salon in Ruislip Manor, which was then known as Harpers. I worked hard and then applied for a stylist position at Stylers in Ruislip High Street, and I got the position. I basically threw myself in the deep end and my career took off from there. Q You are described as the stylist
extraordinaire of No.51 Hair & Beauty Bar in Beaconsfield. What tips could you give to anyone wanting to follow in your footsteps about building up a loyal client list? A Work, work, work! And never stop learning. I truly believe paying really good attention and listening to clients keeps them loyal to you, and doing a thorough consultation will always get the best results.

“Confidence is key in this industry. Find your strength and become the best at it” Q How was your business impacted
during lockdown and how did you manage to overcome the obstacles faced? A Covid as for all businesses really has taken its toll and it is still affecting us as we speak. We overcame the many obstacles by staying positive and all working as a team to get through these uncertain times. Q What advice would you give to anyone
wanting to stand out in this industry? A Always put yourself out for your clients, find what your strength is and become the best at it. Confidence is key in this industry. I still have days where I doubt myself, as anyone does, but working with my team keeps me going. Q As an expert hair stylist, what hair
trends have you been seeing lately, and what do you think 2022 will bring for the world of hair styling? A We're seeing a lot of women wanting to embrace their natural colour, so we are doing a lot of balayage and root smudge. Style-wise, I feel after lockdown more effortless style and blunt wavy bobs has become a favourite, as it's easy to achieve at home. I think in 2022 we will be seeing more sleek up dos and a minimal style.
Georgi T’s top tips
Q What’s next for you? A To continue to master my craft and
inspire the next generation of hair stylists. I’m very proud of what I have achieved even in testing times. I strongly feel if you're passionate about anything, it will never feel like work. I opened my own salon as I had a clear idea and vision of the atmosphere and standards I wanted to create. We get complimented on the vibe in the salon and our clients love coming here. I have a contract now with the Monster Energy Girls, which takes me to various locations to style on photoshoots. This will lead to shoots abroad next year, which is a dream come true!
for festive hair Making your hair last longer for the festive period is super important and can be tricky for some people. In my opinion it is very handy to know what to do and when to do it. I would go about this in a five-step way:
STEP 1 On the first day I would thoroughly wash my hair, blow dry it smooth and style in my desired way. I would opt for a curly all-down look using a curling wand.
N O. 5 1 H A I R & B E AU T Y B A R 51 Wycombe End Beaconsfield, HP9 1LX 01494 681 399 no51hairbeautybar.co.uk
STEP 2 On the second day I would brush through my hair and use products like dry shampoo to put some volume back into my hair. I would then re-curl small parts of my hair and let all old and new curls blend together to get a curly/wavy result.
ST E P 3 On the third day I would opt for a half up-half down look. This is a perfect way to hide greasiness.
ST E P 4 On the fourth day I would definitely go with a slick back sophisticated ponytail or bun. This look is great if you’d like to show off your festive makeup.
STEP 5 GEORGI T
On day 5 I would simply wash and repeat.

s the world reawakens from lockdown, more and more people are taking time for self-care. Given the monotony and introspection of the last 18 months, feeling ready to face the world again has new-found importance. Specialists in laser aesthetics, The Cherrywood Clinic, have opened new premises in Amersham. They combine the clinical and the cosmetic with scientifically-proven treatments for hair removal, rosacea, thread veins, fungal nail infections, pigmented lesions, and skin tightening. Their new premises are modern, sleek, and discreet, going hand-in-hand with the clinical nature of their work without feeling foreboding. With 23 years of continuous operation across the Home Counties, their Clinical Director Rachel says: “We will only ever provide laser treatments. We’ve never diluted our knowledge base with other treatments, because we believe this delivers the best results in the safest possible way.” Each client – of all skin types and genders - is treated as an individual. Rachel believes that the results can be transformative. “People underestimate the difference effective treatment can make. Some of our treatments change things that our clients have worried about for years. We’ve helped many clients who’ve been told they were unsuitable for laser treatment. There are some who’ve gained the confidence to leave the house without makeup, or who can’t believe that they finally don’t have to shave daily. We’re so lucky to be able to do that for people. Tears of joy are fairly common!”

HEALTH & BEAUTY • FOCUS THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO HELP YOUR SKIN DURING THE WINTER MONTHS
MAKE SURE TO APPLY SPF WHEN ON THE SKI SLOPES
WINTER SKIN SOS
Christmas is a time for fun, but follow these simple tips to make sure your body doesn’t take a toll By DR SELENA LANGDON
W
inter skin routines can be challenging as we spend more time inside, particularly with central heating, which can be very drying on the skin. Not only does being inside more influence the skin’s moisture levels, but the temperature contrast with the outside can cause problems too. Going from warm and cosy inside to chilly outside causes blood vessels to dilate, making the redness of acne and rosacea appear much worse. To combat the lack of humidity, which causes your skin to dry, you could
invest in a humidifier. Alternatively indoor plants will help as well as drying clothes, boiling water on the stovetop or keeping the bathroom door open when showering will boost moisture in the air. Another way to help your skin in the winter is to sleep with the heating off, which will not only help your skin, but also save money and the environment. While a nice warm room can feel cosy, it is best to sleep in a room at around 18 degrees Celsius to ensure correct sleep cycles as our bodies take cues from the temperature. As for your winter skincare, I recommend that my patients pay extra attention to their moisturising routine during the darker days. Switching to a
thicker moisturiser will help to combat the environmental effects, with a very popular choice being Hydrate Luxe from Obagi. This product is engineered with powerful ingredients that work with the chronobiology of the skin and contains biomimetic peptides and hydromanil. Importantly, do not forget your hands, which many of us will find particularly dry this year with extra handwashing and the use of alcohol-based sanitisers. One question that always comes up in the clinic is should SPF be used in winter, and the answer is absolutely! Do not be fooled by the darker, dreary winter days as the sun’s harmful UV rays do permeate the clouds and will still cause skin damage. And if you are into your winter sports then sun protection is even more important. When high in the mountains not only will light reflect from the snow, but as the atmosphere is thinner fewer UV rays will be filtered out. During the festive period our lives do become busy, and attention moves to our families, but we should not forget a little bit of self-care can really help to keep our energy up. I find my skin routine a nice way to prepare me for the day while also being a perfect way to wind down in the evening. xercising as an expectant mum can sometimes be quite daunting, and knowing which exercise is safest for you and the baby can leave you feeling overwhelmed. The British at-home spin bike and app Apex Rides has launched a new pregnancy series to help. The series has been developed by instructors Carol-Ann de Venter and Sandy Martin, to help build up confidence, retain strength, and embrace positivity throughout pregnancy. The Apex Pregnancy series is a safe
and inclusive program developed and guided by experts, where each ride guides you through the modifications you can make when cycling in order to keep you and your baby safe. “I could not exercise other than short walks during my first trimester,” says de Venter. “I was so nauseous I could barely get out of bed, and many women experience the same in their first trimester. Second trimester most women feel much better and the bump isn't as much of an interference as it becomes later on, so this is most women's favourite time
to be active during pregnancy. My third trimester was amazing and when I had the most energy, so I really enjoyed spinning right up until my baby was born. Many women will get swelling and exhaustion towards the end of their third trimester and be put off by working out altogether, but staying active can really help.” What would she say are the key benefits of staying active whilst pregnant? “For a start it reduces stress and anxiety,” de Venter says. “It also improves sleep, builds strength, muscle tone, endurance and balance to support your changing body. Exercising reduces low back pain, bloating, and reduces the risk for pregnancy complication such as gestational diabetes.” All of which will mean less bumps in the road during your pregnancy. apexrides.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

hristmas is a time for family, which is rather apt when considering the latest collection from YARDART UK. ‘The Blazing Lord Hector’, ‘The Gullible Lord Percy Percy, Heir to the Duchy of Northumberland’ and ‘The Inimitable Godfather, Marlon’ may all sound like trendy ales or characters from Blackadder, but they are in fact the latest creations in the Heritage Animal range from YARDART UK. “This wonderful family tree in their vintage and ceremonial dress is always growing,” smiles Rebecca Lund. “We have incredible fun putting these together and creating the dynasty story behind them. Our customers love them.” The range is just one reason why YARDART UK, created by Lund and friend Charlotte Clemence, has taken off since launching two years ago. “We hit it off straight away,” Lund recalls of meeting her future business partner on the school run. “A coffee at Charlotte’s house and a chance to see her amazing art, I mentioned my own interest – resin fluid art – and we instantly knew that we could make something THEIR WORK IS INCREASINGLY BEING BOUGHT FOR THE INDOORS

work between us. With both of us loving the outdoors and spending time in our gardens, we noticed there was a gap in the market for outdoor art. After seeing how brilliant and robust the resin was, and the fact it was used for outdoor landscaping, we were convinced we could encase our prints so they could live outdoors.” After a period of trial and error, the company was born and quickly they built up a fanbase. “Most outdoor art on the market is produced on an outdoor canvas. It may make it appear more accessible cost-wise, but it also makes it lower quality and less robust to the elements,” Lund explains. “We ensure our printing is perfect, and the colours as vibrant as the original piece itself, making it a stand out artwork for the garden. “Our printing process means that everything, including the frame, is printed onto the blank acrylic canvas, making it completely waterproof, giving each piece a 3D effect,” she continues. “The frame image is so realistic and convincing; you’ll often find people having to touch it to understand it. It’s hard to get your head around the fact it is actually flat and only 5mm thick. By using outdoor grade architectural bolts that colour

match to the piece, we complete the 3D effect, as the art stands slightly proud of the wall. It also means that air flows around it, water stops being trapped and they are wind proof too. Essentially our art can live outside, hassle free, all year round and still look perfect.” How do the two come up with new pieces? “We look at interior and exterior trends, talk to our clients and also analyse what has sold,” Lund says. “Colour predictions, such as Colour of the Year, along with new palette colours from the likes of Farrow & Ball also have an influence. By talking to our artists, we discuss their motivations behind new ideas, and what they see as the next zeitgeist to capture people’s minds. Aside from that we do what we love, so even if it’s a bit leftfield we can never say no to an idea. “We love bringing new artists into the YARDART UK family,” Lund adds. “We collaborate with some wonderful industry leaders from street art companies and galleries. Their knowledge is incredible and has led to some wonderful limited edition pieces including Banksy’s Heart Boy and HEART BOY BY BANKSY: YARDART UK IN COLLABORATION WITH BRANDLER GALLERIES, FROM £2,300
THE CHRISTMAS COLLECTION IS HUGELY POPULAR
“Our Christmas collection is a mix of 3D effect wreaths and baubles to hang on gates, front doors and inside” Seasons Greetings in association with Brandler Galleries. The prints, which are numbered and come with a certificate of authenticity, were exhibited at Moments at Moyses Hall, Bury St Edmunds, during the summer. We have now started working on some Rachel List pieces, which is really exciting, for next year. She is a wonderful artist to keep an eye on, and who was thrown into the spotlight after her amazing NHS piece during the pandemic in 2020.” Also last year saw YARDART UK launch a Christmas collection, which – rejoice – returns in 2021 too. “It’s a mix of 3D effect wreaths and baubles to hang on gates, front doors and inside,” Lund says on what to expect. “We’ve also got the pastel pink trend covered as well as miniature versions of Heritage Animals. This time of year is when our bespoke offer becomes increasingly popular for Christmas presents, especially
for the garden lovers out there. We get a lot of family photos sent in, to digitally frame, so that a special someone can have their family portraits in their garden and courtyards. They are a fantastic idea, especially for the person that has everything.” Lund admits business is at present “relentless”, but luckily she has Hertfordshire’s beautiful landscape to help ease the strain. “I live near a canal,” she says. “I absolutely love it here and we have the canal in our back garden, so we can go out on the kayaks. Charlotte and I often have a business meeting out on the boats! It’s a beautiful place to bring up the children and we have the most spectacular walks around here too. Our local school is brilliant, we have such a sense of community here – I wouldn’t change it for anything.” Just as the Heritage Animal collection is all about a family tree, Lund says Christmas will be a time to spend close to her loved ones. “The plan is 100% about spending time with my family and switching off this Christmas,” she states. “We plan to stay at home, play games and eat a lot. I don’t want to miss my children growing up and my youngest is starting school next year, so these times are precious. It is very important to us to dial down before the welcomed mayhem starts again in early spring!” Rebecca Lund is co-director at YARDART UK – see more at yardartuk.co.uk and follow them on Instagram @yardart_uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

C H R I ST M A S Top tips on how to ensure your home is ready for the festive season By SANDRA ROTHWELL

hristmas is just around the corner and who doesn’t want their home to sparkle with even more decorative cheer this year? From warm and welcoming exteriors and festive-looking hallways to glamming up windowsills, dining tables and mantlepieces, it’s a chance to unleash your inner artist and get creative. A Christmas wreath makes any front door welcoming, as does a small potted Christmas tree or pile of freshly cut logs in your porch. Add twinkling fairy lights, lanterns and candles to create a soft glow and set the scene for a warm and hospitable Christmas for you and your guests. Extend your welcome into the hallway with garlands of foliage wrapped around your bannister, entwined with small, warm white fairy lights to add instant cosiness. Use satin ribbon or twine to hang baubles or festive stars from coat hooks or over the top of doorways. Having layers of lighting – lanterns, lamps and fairy lights – will soften the atmosphere in the hallway too, creating a really inviting feel. I love festive scents like cinnamon and spice or cranberry and ginger and always have a reed diffuser, but you could fill a bowl with pinecones and spritz or add essential oil. Place these in the hallway, cloakroom and living room so it’s Christmas wherever you are in the house. If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, then make this the focus of the room. Go big with greenery and add foliage along the length of the mantle. Adorn with pinecones, berries and small baubles to add colour
A WREATH WILL OFFER A WARM WELCOME
and, for a truly magical look, add mini votives in and around the fireplace and lanterns to glow even when the fire isn’t on. Forage in your garden for a few long twigs or small branches and arrange in a simple vase or pot, great for a dining table centrepiece. Leave natural or decorate with miniature wooden decorations or baubles. Both functional and stylish, serve your guest’s favourite tipple from a drinks trolley festively decorated, and use gorgeous trays and sparkly coasters to place drinks on. This is the year to go big on table decorations too! Mix and match colourful tableware (pre-loved works well here) with a tablescape of mini presents and flowers to add a real wow to your dining room. Nostalgia is a big trend this year and old festive trinkets are perfect for this. Add throws to sofas and armchairs to make your living room extra cosy. Choose natural colours that won’t compete with your decorations – a faux fur or soft luxurious velvet throw will keep you snug and warm as you curl up to watch your favourite film over the Christmas holidays. Sit back, relax and enjoy all your hard work. Happy Christmas! sandrarothwellinteriors.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

he last few years has seen an outpouring of new and super-sized streaming services. In the last few years, Apple and Disney entered the market with their “+” sized streaming offerings, while Apple has produced a flury of new series with great success. Meanwhile, streaming pioneers Netflix have ramped up the volume of prestige TV and blockbuster films to a breakneck speed and Prime has become one to watch for an increasing number of sporting events. However, we can’t forget similar efforts from traditional broadcasters. When it comes to TV choice, things have never been better. Or are they? The UK has seen a surge in paid and free-to-access streaming services, with many more in the pipeline. The platform war is one blockbuster to avoid for many of us. On one hand, the explosion of choice may be welcomed, but the number of services and devices needed to access them is spiralling out of control. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

If money and the size of your TV cabinet is no object, then you can simply sign up to all available services and contracts where required. Back in the real world, we all have different tastes and means, not to mention varying degrees of patience and appetite for new technologies. And there’s also the conundrum of feeling locked into a hefty subscription contract, but only value a small but essential piece of the overall package. With countless sporting events now locked away behind hefty paywalls from mainstream providers, navigating to your favourites has become an unwelcome sport in itself. There’s also the additional costs and long-term commitments wrapped up in so many subscription models that creates further frustration.
free, you are free to jump ship or dip into other services in future. Let’s say, for example, that Netflix and Prime ticks most of the boxes for you and your family, but your family is desperate to see The Mandalorian. Using a trial offer or one-month subscription to Disney+, you could binge-watch this new Star Wars show once all episodes are available and trial so you can see if it is right for you. Full Fibre can reinvigorate your broadband connection with an abundance of extra speed and wealth of new options for how you consume entertainment and boost your bank balance. Here’s just a few of the things you can achieve by making the smart move to a Full Fibre broadband service.
SO, WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?
If you’re currently a Sky customer that is reluctantly paying for the base TV package so you can enjoy Sky Sports, you can save yourself around £30 a month and switch to a monthly Sky Sports Pass for £33.99. While it costs a little more than adding it to an existing Sky subscription, it means you can make a net saving of £23.01 a month if you don’t want the base TV package. You can access the pass via the NOW TV app and take a break at any time by cancelling the rolling monthly fee for the Sky Sports Pass. One of the main reasons you may want to stick with your current TV provider is to
Using a trial offer or one-month subscription to Disney+, you could binge-watch every episode of Star Wars' The Mandalorian once all episodes are available. It all boils down to a mix of good oldfashioned research and smart thinking to build the right blend of entertainment to suit your household. You’re unlikely to find just one streaming service that perfectly matches all your tastes and needs, but there could be two platforms that satisfy, say, 90% of your interests. And if you stick to services that are contract-

However, most TVs manufactured in the last five years come with smart features out-of-the-box. These features allow you to access terrestrial catch-up and paid streaming services all from your TV, without the need for an additional set-top box. We all need to get more savvy about how we engage with TV. Whatever your preference, switching to Full Fibre can score your household a hat-trick, with not only a huge hike in both download and upload speed, but bags of extra options to unlock great sport and entertainment for less. EDUCATION • CHOICES
GEOGRAPHY FAST FACTS What makes geography so brilliant? AM: The physical and human world of today is constantly changing. It is crucial for current and future generations to understand these trends and flows so that purposeful actions and decisions can be made. Geography is the subject that helps make sense of all aspects of the world. VB: Geography is everything that has gone before and everything that is to come. It unlocks secrets and solves puzzles. It makes you ask and answer questions, find patterns, identify problems, work solutions. With every news item – from questions of immigration to climate change to Covid patterns – geographers are quietly sitting in the background of every decision that matters. Who gets the aid, where to build that stadium, how to find those survivors? It is in all times and all places. What made you choose it? AM: I loved having the opportunity to study a really broad subject, which incorporated fields such as geology, ecology and economics. And the trips are, of course, always fun! VB: I like a map.

Transferable skills and knowledge acquired? AM: Geography helps you to develop excellent decision making and research skills, use statistics to make sense of data and use computers to collect, present and analyse information. You'll be studying global trade one day and the science of earthquakes the next. VB: Geographers are literate, numerate, computer skilled, team players, independent learners, researchers, analysts, scientists,
“Geographers are literate, numerate, computer skilled... and often look splendid in corduroy” problem solvers, creative thinkers and often look splendid in corduroy. What pathways does it open? AM: At A-level, its breadth means it complements any subject combination. Contemporary research and themes regularly filter down from universities and become part of geography at school, particularly in human geography. A huge range of doors will be opened with a geography degree, from being a geoscientist designing a wind farm, to working in finance or law, to marketing. I worked in advertising before training to be a teacher. VB: Far more than you might imagine. Very few of us are teachers. Most become urban designers, political analysts, peace negotiators, MPs (Prime Ministers!), economists, accountants, vulcanologists, software designers, vets, doctors, epidemiologists... Two things students might not realise geography covers... AM: Themes such as human rights and diversity help young people to further their understanding of issues at a local and global scale. VB: Piracy and Mars landings – geography is brilliant. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

EDUCATION • BOARD GAMES
BOARD
LIFELINES AT THE READY FOR WOULD-BE MILLIONAIRES
RULES Gaming may be in, but old-school board games have had a renaissance
J
ust when we thought the world had gone entirely digital, games of the oldfashioned board and dice, chips and pieces variety are having a moment. These old-school activities that used to while away a rainy day and enliven Christmas holidays came out of the cupboard during lockdown. There's every reason for parents to encourage board games at any time. Apart from the obvious benefit of getting children away from screens, they are social, can be adapted to nearly every age group and subtly but effectively improve numeracy, spelling, creative thinking, playing by rules – also, very possibly, sleight of hand and skills of deception. One thing that's good to know is that tabletop games development is a UK strength, just like video games development. Here are some of our favourites to keep the family entertained during the cold dark months ahead.
TASKMASTER
WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE
CARNOVSKY ANIMALS JIGSAW PUZZLE
You have to be of a certain age to remember when this was the mustsee Saturday night event. But it's back, and the game's combination of tricky questions make it a good option for challenging family fun. Released ready for the Christmas rush, it gives you the chance to win a virtual million and lifelines are accessed by your mobile device. More than 700 questions mean there's something to test everyone.
Jigsaws are a bit of a Marmite invention, but they can be entirely solitary or a group activity. Also, if you have the space, completing them can take place over days. Children develop skill and patience and a sense of achievement when it's done. Our pick would be Carnovsky Animals Jigsaw, which has jazzed up the format by making it interactive and 3D. It comes with three pairs of specs, each of which makes the puzzle reveal entirely different animals. Even better, you can scan the QR code on the box to turn your phone into a viewing lens.
Recommended for age 14+ and suitable for 2+ players. From £29.99 at Smyths Games.
Recommended for age 8+ and suitable for 1+ players. From £14.99 at Find Me A Gift.
Another offshoot of a TV show (this time hosted by Greg Davies), Taskmaster veers towards the absurd and is great fun for younger players. As with the show, to win you have a go at completing silly tasks, such as getting an egg as high as possible without breaking it. The format includes a game board, task cards and scoreboard, playing pieces and trophy. There's also a downloadable taskmaster timer app and you can get exclusive video assignments. Recommended for age 8+ and suitable for 3+ players. From £20 at John Lewis.

enaissance specialises in creating beautiful homes with a friendly community right on your doorstep created exclusively for those enjoying later living. With four communities across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, located in Crowthorne, Sandhurst, Wokingham and Bourne End, Renaissance’s mission to foster social and supportive communities that bring people together to enjoy great times with friends, family and neighbours connects with the same spirit the Christmas season brings. Open your front door, and you have the option to live as socially as you desire. Our extensive facilities encourage people to connect and share. Find good conversation and enjoy the buzz of the communal lounge, where you can enjoy a glass of sherry or a mulled wine and build lasting friendships. Each week, the shared lounges host social events such as coffee mornings and film nights and during the countdown to Christmas, festive get togethers are planned across all of the communities, which are great ways to catch up with neighbours, friends and family. “What’s nice is that nothing is set in stone, you can join the events if you want to, but there is no obligation to do so. TEAM CHRISTMAS As responsible co-parents, you’ll need to work together: START PLANNING NOW Plan for the entire two-week holiday period, especially as this year Christmas falls on a weekend. 1
BOTH PARENTS CAN BE A PART OF THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS
SANTA OR ELF?
Are you the jolly bringer of gifts or the stressed-out worker in the background? Family lawyer Rita Gupta shares her tips on how separated parents can share the fun
O
ver the festive period, separated parents need to sort out thorny issues such as presents, family get-togethers, and where the children will spend Christmas Day itself. This can result in a Santa/Elf setup: the Santa parent gets all the fun and attention, whereas the Elf parent does all the hard work without recognition.
WHO IS THE SANTA CLAUS PARENT? Santa is often the non-resident parent, arriving laden with presents and promises of fun, whilst avoiding the everyday jobs of cooking, cleaning and clearing up. RITA GUPTA
2 MAKE TIME FOR GRANDPARENTS Many grandparents missed out on seeing their grandchildren due to the pandemic. Research consistently shows the positive benefits of time spent with grandparents and wider family. Ensure you include them in your plans. 3 CO-OPERATE OVER PRESENTS Aim to give a joint present, to illustrate that you are both an equal part of their lives and to show unity. Or set a budget for all presents and stick to it. 4 DON’T SPLIT UP CHRISTMAS If you live miles apart, don’t try and split Christmas Day itself between your two homes. You’ll spend precious time on rushed meals, car journeys, and soothing miserable kids unable to enjoy their presents. 5 SEND A CHILD ARRANGEMENT LETTER A child arrangement letter lays out your Christmas plans in detail. Both parents sign it, making it easier to agree and plan. Your family law solicitor can help with this.
PERFECT CHRISTMAS PARENTS By sharing the load and taking turns with the everyday jobs, you both can be cracking Christmas parents. Then everyone can relax, enjoy the break, and have fun!
WHO IS THE ELF PARENT?
LG F L LT D
The Elf is often the resident parent, tasked with putting up decorations, buying festive food, driving kids to carol concerts and family parties. This can be both time-consuming and expensive.
