fter a month spent nourishing our bodies with rich foods and fine wines and our friendships with love and good cheer, I would say that it’s probably about time we attended to our minds. OUT FOXED Hello, my name is Ilana and I’m addicted to East Dulwich. It’s chronic – to the extent that I feel uneasy outside of SE22. Yep, I get the shakes when I leave the confines of our neighbourhood.

L

ike most of the population, I set myself resolutions at the start of the year – but unlike many others, I’m one of those unbearably smug people who does everything that they resolve to do. In 2012 I stopped smoking and gave up wheat and potatoes. In 2013 I started rifle shooting competitively, lost that final half a stone (it is possible!), took up Pilates and gave up gluten. If you hear a squeaking that’s me polishing my halo. (I hate me too). But the problem with achieving everything that you set out to achieve is that it means finding new stuff to do gets harder and harder. I want to be able to relax more (and have more massages with the amazing Stephen Nock, who does Ayurvedic treatments on Crebor Street – look him up!), but I also want to set up my own tech start-up, finally finish the novel I’ve been working on - and then write another. There is no rest for the wickedly ambitious. I was sharing my resolutions with a friend when she told me I’ve been doing it wrong. “You’re meant to give up things that are bad for you – not increase your workload,” she said. I thought about it for a moment. “I could finally give up processed sugar?” I said doubtfully and she sighed at me. Apparently I’m not spiritual enough and my resolutions do little to enrich my soul. So after some deep thought, my resolution is to stop forming meaningless – but extremely fun – ‘friendships’ with good-looking bad boys. I am to treat men not as my playthings but as my equals, and I’m going to try to have an actual, normal, healthy, functioning relationship with them. Or – apparently – I am supposed to try and do this with just one boy. “And to make sure you carry out this resolution, you’re going to write about this in your column,” my friend continued. “I want all the landlords of the pubs in East Dulwich to keep an eye on you and make sure you keep to this.” I nodded and said I‘d write about it – which I have! Thanks for reading! - but the moment I waved goodbye to my mate I realised there were two additional resolutions I’d try to keep to: I’m going to learn to say no to bossy friends and I’m going to start drinking in Crystal Palace again. 2014 is going to be a whole lot of fun.

Local gallery Peckham Space is changing it’s name, here director Emily Druiff explains to Alexandra Jones why now and what to. s a name I always rather liked ‘Peckham Space’. It had always seemed to me to have a playfulness about it; it had always seemed a wink towards the irony that, despite being a gallery with big programmes and lofty ideals, one thing Peckham Space did not have a huge amount of was, well, space. When I heard, then, that the project would be relaunching and the gallery renamed, I decided to catch up with director Emily Druiff to see whether they’d come up with something equally as brilliant. Opened in 2010, London’s newest purpose-built gallery is bookended by Peckham High Street on one side and the Peckham Library on the other. It’s situation, at the very heart of Peckham, has always acted as something of a raison d’être with exhibitions responding to themes set by groups from within the local community. ‘We

then approach an artist or a range of artists and say ‘can you build on this idea?’ After the artists make their proposals, the community group become involved in deciding which they like best, which they think best represents them, which engages most with the ideas or themes they’ve given us. It’s quite a long-winded process,’ explains Druiff with a short laugh. As director of the project since 2007, she has been instrumental in building relationships with groups from the area, carving out a place for the gallery within the community, something she is obviously passionate about. ‘The groups that we work with basically shape our artistic programme and I think that’s the bit that’s really exciting, you never quite know how it’s going to work out.’ Previous exhibitions have included work by Sonia Boyce, Harold Offeh and, most recently by Kimathi Donkor.

By making each accountable to something wider than their own creativity the commission presents a unique challenge to the artist, a challenge that most rise to admirably, producing exhibitions which are both original and thought-provoking. Why, then, make a change? As well as the name, the gallery will be breaking away from the University of the Arts London and setting up as a charity, a move which will greatly alter it’s routes to income as well as the shape of the artistic programme. ‘I think it has really been about ensuring that we continue to develop and grow. There is a huge amount going on within the cultural landscape at the moment, where organizations have to become more savvy about how they generate their income and have to become more savvy about how they engage with their audience. ‘Being on Peckham Square means that we can’t avoid the fact that not everyone here is going to want to come into a gallery, or perhaps even feel like a gallery is for them,’ explains Druiff earnestly. ‘To develop we now need to question how our programme can best address those particular issues. How can we change those perceptions?’ It’s an interesting dilemma and solving it will, Druiff feels, be a defining element of the gallery in the future. As in the past, projects will be originated from within the community, each working hard to engage as many people from that community as possible. And the name? ‘Drumroll,’ laughs Druiff, ‘Peckham Platform. We polled visitors who agreed that it was important we keep the ‘Peckham’ but now we want it to be more than a single space. We want it to be a place that engenders discussion, we want to encourage the social side of art, with projects all around Peckham. We want the gallery to be somewhere where ideas can be explored as well as exhibited. It’s an exciting time!’ Peckham Platform’s first exhibition, Bookbed, opens on 31 January; peckhamplatform.com

SEASON TO TASTE by Natalie Young It is hard to describe what I felt as I read this superbly written novel, since the central plot is of a woman who kills her husband, freezes his body parts and then eats him! Once I got over that, a bit like watching the autopsies on Silent Witness with my hands over my eyes, I loved it. Natalie appreciates that her second novel might not be to everyone’s taste, (excuse the pun) however, I would urge you to take a chance and get stuck in! Tinder Press £12.99

The WIT of the WELSH Alexandra Jones speaks to actor Owain Arthur about comedy timing and charming the critics

n June 2012, James Corden’s heartfelt acceptance speech at that year’s Tony Awards reduced all who watched it to quiet tears. Corden, who had just won the best actor gong for his Broadway turn as Francis Henshall in One Man, Two Guvnors was himself crying, genuinely humbled to have been the winner from a shortlist that included Philip Seymour Hoffman. Back in the UK, critics reacted with similar delight at the win. Everyone agreed: Corden had given a stellar performance; he’d made the role his own. Such was his success in the role, such was his performance revered, that when the current run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in the West End began with a new cast in March that year (the original having transferred to Broadway with Corden winning the Tony Award) the play was re-reviewed. This largely unprecedented move (critics almost never re-review just because of a cast change) signalled that these were special circumstances. The man tasked with taking Corden’s place was not, as had been expected, a megawatt star. Nor did he have twenty years experience. He wasn’t even, as the role called for, a cockney. ‘I knew that everyone would make a comparison between me and James,’ Owain Arthur tells me earnestly. He was Corden’s understudy. And he was cast off the back of just half a performance. ‘It was the first time I ever went on, the first time I’d ever done it with the cast or in front of an audience – 1,500 people! [Director] Nick Hytner was there, [writer] Richard Bean, the producer, the casting department from the National, everybody who might have given me a job was there. So I knew I was in the running. In the interval I was outside getting some air and looking over the script for the second half and Nick came over and said “listen, I think you’re doing a wonderful job, I’ve never seen anything like it, we’d love you to take over from James in March.” I was gobsmacked!’ Now, it’s almost two years on from that first performance and we’re in his (impressive) dressing room discussing the pressure of taking on a part that had been so recently and so successfully realised by another

deciding to leave Wales for London to pursue some formal training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He’s been a jobbing actor ever since, though has had stints selling hotdogs, working in the cellar at the Royal Albert Hall and training to be a London cabbie. More raffish than his hapless onstage character, Arthur is charming in a quick-to-laugh kind of way, often peppering his answers with (sweary) exclamations and funny asides (‘shit! They’re only here to see if I can do it, I’m shitting myself!’ is how he felt when he realised that he was being auditioned). Now living in Nunhead, he loves South East London because of the sense of community and spends most of his spare time at Skehans pub on Kitto Road. He has a natural ebullience that makes him a perfect fit for the role of Francis, a hired hand, who thinking to make a bit of extra cash takes on two jobs, with two different bosses. The story becomes increasingly farcical (and hilarious) as Francis strives to keep both bosses happy without either one finding out about the other. Adlibbing, pulling audience members up on stage and interacting with hecklers, Arthur is a fury of energy for the entirety of the two-and-a-bit hours, often bursting into infectious giggles. ‘We have a good time, I think –

I was dizzy! I’d got the role, I was in the West End, I was in this dressing and I was just thinking, oh my God, what the hell is going on?

actor. ‘It was terrifying! James did an amazing job of creating this role, because really that’s what he did. They were big shoes to fill – big suits to fill! – I don’t know how I did it. I just had to block it all out. ‘I mean, I was dizzy! I’d got the role, I was in the West End, I was in this dressing room [he gestures around the room, wide-eyed] and I was just thinking, oh my God, what the hell is going on? Looking back now it’s like, shit! That was incredible! I was so lucky.’ Though anyone who has seen Arthur’s performance will agree that his success has more to do with talent than it does with luck, his modesty seems that of a man who regularly pinches himself to check that he isn’t dreaming. Born and raised in Wales, Arthur was encouraged from an early age to pursue his love of performing. ‘My grandmother actually said that I should do it. You know how it is with family things at Christmas. People go “sing a song, do a dance for us” and I always got a kick out of doing it, out of making a tit of myself, so my grandmother suggested that they send me to drama classes.’ He made his professional acting debut at the age of 12 on Welsh-language soap, Rownd a Rownd. He was on the show for almost ten years before

or I hope – the audience can see that. We can’t help but laugh. I mean, I pulled up Gok Wan the other night; he was a lot of fun.’ The physicality of the role is a delight to watch, though it does at times make you cringe into your seat thinking, oof that must have hurt. ‘There is one bit where I whack my head on a bin lid. [He moves in close to show me his hairline] now you tell me if I’m not losing hair! I hit myself– bang! –every night and I think I’m getting this little rainbow of baldness on the front of my head.’ I assure him that I don’t see anything and he sits back in mock relief. I suspect though that he is fairly blithe about this side of things. Indeed, having garnered his own crop of rave reviews, four and five star write-ups so good that they went beyond mere Corden comparisons, Arthur can probably afford to be blithe about a lot of things, but he isn’t. ‘I’m always learning new things about the play, about what will get a laugh. I’m always trying things out…though sometimes it can go wrong.’ He tells me about a time he tried an old line out on a Wednesday matinee audience –‘the blue rinse brigade’ – a group that smile a lot but perhaps aren’t as vociferous as other crowds. ‘One of my lines to [upper-class twit] Stanley Stubbersis “you also held masturbation relay races, which is not normal either”. The old line was “you also gang raped eleven-year-old boys, which is not normal either.” It was the most inappropriate crowd to try that one with again! It went down like a lead balloon. Sam Alexander [who plays Stanley Stubbers]looked at me all wide-eyed. It was like tumbleweed.’ There was certainly no tumbleweed when I saw the show or, judging by the rapturous reviews it received, none when the critics were in either. And though Arthur has been quoted as saying that the reviews weren’t all that important to him, I imagine there’s one that he was pretty pleased with. BEST SERVED COLD SATIRE, DEATH AND SPOUSAL CANNIBALISM – NATALIE YOUNG DISCUSSES HER SENSATIONAL NEW NOVEL AND WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO CLIMB INSIDE THE MIND OF A KILLER

A

t the beginning of Natalie Young’s astounding second novel, the book’s protagonist, Lizzie Prain, unhappily married for thirty years, murders her husband. Realising that if she buries him, there is a chance that her crime may one day be discovered, she disposes of the body in the kindest and most economical way she knows how – by eating him. Over the course of a month, Lizzie takes him out of the freezer, piece by piece, roasting a hand here and a thigh there, and devours him whole. Here Natalie tells Absolutely about cannibalism in Surrey between South East London school runs. Assuming someone hasn’t read the book, how would you describe it in a few words?

It is very funny, full of dark humour. It’s satirical and wicked and, I think, thought-provoking. How did you come up with the idea for the story?

Well, I had in my mind for a long time the idea of a woman living on her own in the woods and I knew that there was something quite strange about her; something quite sad and wistful but also a playfulness. In a very early draft she was opening the door to her house and she was laughing and there was sunlight but she was laughing darkly. It was that interplay between laughter and darkness that immediately summed up, for me, what the texture of the novel would be. As it developed in my mind I continued to work - I think

unconsciously - on this idea of laughter and darkness. Then one day I just woke up and I had seen it, I had seen that this is what she had done and I was absolutely terrified. I just didn’t think it was possible for me to write it! It’s funny because, I spoke to friends about it and the reactions were quite different: a couple of men that I mentioned it to said ‘oh no, no you can’t possibly pull that off’. The women that I mentioned it to though just said ‘absolutely fucking brilliant, no one has ever done this before, you’ve got to write this book.’ But I already knew that I had to write it. Why do you think you, or the people with whom you spoke to about the story, didn’t think it would be possible to write it?

I wasn’t sure whether it was possible to do this without becoming clinically depressed! And I did really struggle during the writing process. Any person writing a book has to deal with self-doubt. You know, what is the point of what you’re doing in this

world, who cares? Why don’t you just go and do a proper, normal job? But on top of that I had the question of who in this world of generally reasonable and nice people is going to want to read a book about a woman who is eating a body? I just had no idea of the resonance or the power it was going to have, of the responses it was going to get. It generates discussion and people just don’t know what it’s about once they’ve read it. They kind of love it and that shocks them, and they love Lizzie and that shocks them. She’s very funny, was that difficult to do in the context of the story?

Well I knew that I had to make her appealing and very human. And that was a massive, massive challenge. I knew that we absolutely had to be in Lizzie’s head. It had to be an intellectual and emotional exploration of violence taking place within her consciousness. I also knew that pulling the reader into her head, into this house in the woods was making a big demand on them, therefore I had to make it inviting and intriguing. I suppose the business of having to sit down each day to write about someone eating flesh was also draining. I mean if you’ve got two small children, like I have, and you’re taking these children to school and being nice to other mums at the school gate but then going home and trying to write this really rather gruesome thing, it’s going to take its toll. Lizzie became a metaphor for what I was doing; she is very systematic about how she gets through her day and she has these sort of self-help tips, about how you just have to go from one point to another. “I’m going to take down these old nasty curtains, fold them and put them away in the draw. Next step, I’m going to walk through the kitchen, remove my boots at the door, open up the freezer, take out a hand and apply myself to it as if it were a joint of meat like any other.’ And she does cook the right hand like a joint of lamb, using a recipe that she’s got from a recipe book for spring lamb. I just thought about it in the same simple way. There’s a wonderful simplicity to the whole novel…

The thing is, you don’t have to say an awful lot. Just naming the objects

is enough. I really resisted the urge to be lyrical here because it would have just been grotesque. There isn’t room for any empty beauty. It is adequate to just name the object. A simple word like ‘garlic’ or ‘onion’ or ‘sideboard’ even becomes strangely soothing and consoling and uplifting in contrast to ‘severed’, ‘sinew’, ‘muscle’, ‘testicles’. Did you do a lot of research?

I did do research. I talked to brain surgeons in a hospital, mostly about the humour that they develop over time in order to protect themselves from what can go wrong on the

The novel is set quite specifically in a house just off the A31 between Guildford and Farnham, are you familiar with the area?

Yes that’s where I grew up and I set it in the woods that I used to roam around in as a child. There’s a real pull to a woodland setting if you’ve been brought up in that. The light piercing through the leaves and through the trees, it never really leaves you. And there’s power in the woods metaphor. It appears in Dante, Robert Frost, the fairy tale woods in Hansel and Gretel. And Lizzie lives in a woodcutter’s cottage. Did you have any particular fairy tales in mind?

Any person writing a book has to deal with self-doubt

operating table. To be a surgeon or any kind of medical person you do have to have a slightly weird sense of humour, because you’re dealing with this every day. Writers are very sensitive and live in a very nice little world, with cups of tea and tea cosies; we’re a long way from the front line. But I think the more access you have to the front line of life, the more it changes you as a writer.

It was quite unconscious, but there was definitely always a fairy tale aspect to it because there’s a woman alone in the woods cooking. She lives in a woodcutter’s cottage and she bakes cakes, it could easily be the barebones of a fairy tale. And of course fairy tales are quite sinister, there’s always a witch, always something to trigger the imagination. That was definitely part of the context. You’re living in Peckham at the moment?

Yes, on the Rye overlooking the park. How long have you been there?

In the area almost 10 years now. I was in East Dulwich first, then I moved across the park to Peckham, which is now becoming the centre of the universe! It’s lovely, very spacious and bright and good for the kids. There are wonderful schools. It’s just a really nice place to live. I love Forest Hill Road where you can walk up the street and go in the shops and people stop and talk to you. I like being in an area where you get to know your community. I mean, the barber that lives across from me is called Shaun and whenever I’m walking to collect the children from school he always pops out to say hello and have a chat and I really like that. These are the sportspeople I see that most often get into trouble around this time. Preparing for the ski season should include strength, balance and core stability exercises. The first few piste runs have high risks of injury, especially the last run of the day. A helmet/casque is strongly advised as most skiers who suffer head injuries are stationary but hit by another skier. You only need to hit your head once! Distance runners may be preparing for a spring marathon and novice marathoners will possibly be eyeing up London the 3rd week in April. These months should be used for regular short, weekly runs and a longer run of 15-20km at weekends. Pelvic

and core strengthening will help improve times. Realistically, it is too late to start training in January, save yourself for next year as you should have completed at least 12 half-marathons and beyond to be physiologically ready. There is no such thing as bad weather only inappropriate clothing so don’t use rain or snow as an excuse not to run. And always take fluid with you as you can easily dehydrate in cold windy weather. I started my 16-week plan for Paris April 2013 in mid-December. It was 4 °C at the start. Be prepared!’

Indeed, in the Language of Flowers lily-of-the-valley means ‘a return to happiness’. Unusually, Ben has used jasmine at the base of this scent, creating a freshness one would not expect. t feels like the crack of dawn when I wake up to the sound of my doorbell at 7.30am on a Tuesday morning – I’d totally forgotten that I’d signed up to this detox malarkey. Dragging myself downstairs to the front door, I open it scowling. ‘Is this some kind of sick joke?’ I demand to the poor delivery man on my doorstep. Nervous, he gives a non-committal shrug and points to the box at my feet. I make out a Radiance Cleanse logo printed on the cardboard. Ah yes. The detox. Karma deals its vengeful blow when I attempt to pick the box up and almost break my back – it is seriously heavy. I end up shunting my juice-laden package along the floor to the kitchen (who knew you get a work out as well as a detox?) and there’s a slight hiccup getting it down the stairs, but by happy coincidence the juices need to be well shaken before drinking. Inside is a black canvas cooling bag bearing the Radiance Cleanse logo, filled with a rainbow array of fifteen bottles of juice. I’ve opted for the Beauty Boost Cleanse, a three-day detox designed with the help of dermatologists to nourish your skin from within and leave you looking as bright as a button. Unpacking the bottles, I scan the ingredients. There’s cashew nut milk to help the skin’s elasticity, broccoli and spinach, which provide the antioxidant co-enzyme Q10, and coconut butter, supplying repairing and hydrating essential fatty acids – a veritable feast for my skin, if you will. However, I also notice that there’s three of each bottle, meaning each day follows the same pattern. The enclosed guide also states they have to be taken at the same time of day as well. This, I fear, is going to get repetitive. My first juice is a thick, green concoction called ‘Super Green’, which I eye suspiciously – it looks a lot like sludge. I snap open the lid and sniff it gingerly before taking a sip. The taste of celery hits me and my heart sinks. The vegetable and I

A company can be suitable for various reasons. Your accountant should help you to understand if and when a company would be right for you. Is having a company going to take up a lot of my time?

You would probably spend an extra hour a year being a company rather than a sole trader. This could be a worthy investment of time when compared with the benefits and tax savings of having a company. There would be more penalties

Yes, there are penalties for late filing of accounts with Companies House, which would not apply to a sole trader. The deadline for company accounts is typically nine months after the year end, which is about the same as for a personal Tax Return. Most companies are able to meet the deadlines, and so avoid any penalties. The tax would be more complicated

If anything, company tax is simpler to understand. There is often no national insurance liability and, in many cases, no payments on account. Sole traders typically have to make payments on account to HMRC for estimated, future tax liabilities. As such, the system for sole traders can make liabilities harder to predict and bring about cash flow shortages.

B R I G H T… Guy Awford, head chef at The Guildford Arms in Greenwich gives us his top tips for making the most marvellous marmalade anuary is the time to make marmalade, when bittersweet Seville oranges are in season. And making your own can be so rewarding, as the flavour is much more intense and vibrant than any store-bought version. It’s a fairly straightforward procedure but there are a few rules.

FOR SEVILLE ORANGE MARMALADE YOU WILL NEED…

• 900g Seville oranges • 2 lemons • 2.2L water • 1.6kg sugar – warmed in the oven • 6 450g jars • 23cm muslin square • Piece of string

THE METHOD:

Measure the water into a preserving pan (or large pot). Cut the oranges and lemons in half, squeeze out the juice and add it to

the water. Cut away the pith from the peel and place with any pips onto the muslin square. Tie up and suspend in the water tied to the pan’s handle. Cut the orange peel into quarters and then into thin shreds and place in the pot.

Simmer uncovered for two hours.

Remove the muslin bag and leave to cool on a saucer. At this stage if you prefer rindless marmalade the contents of the pan can be liquidised with a handheld liquidiser. Pour the warmed sugar into the pan and stir over a low heat until all the sugar crystals have dissolved. Squeeze the muslin bag into the pot to extract as much of the sticky substance as possible. This contains all the pectin and is vital for setting the marmalade.

Increase to a high heat and bring the mixture to a really fast boil. Caution, it is very hot! As soon as the mixture reaches 105C it will set. So test with a thermometer or as suggested below. Leave the marmalade to settle for twenty minutes if you have peel in it or it will rise to the top. Pour the marmalade with the aid of a funnel into sterilised jars and seal while still hot with wax covers. You could add a splash of whiskey at the end.

Top tips… Always boil the peel until really soft before adding the sugar, or the peel will be tough. The jars and lids must be scrupulously clean and still hot to prevent marmalade going mouldy. The hot wash in a dishwasher should do the job, or wash them in soapy water, rinse, and dry in the oven set at 130C. You don’t need a lot of fancy kit to make marmalade but a jam thermometer is very useful as it’s crucial that the marmalade is cooked to 105C in order for the pectin and sugar to set. Much hotter, and the flavour will be spoilt as the mixture will caramelise. To test without a thermometer put a saucer in the freezer and wait until the jam comes to a rolling boil, rising up the pan. Stir well, turn off the heat, and spoon a few drops of the liquid on to the cold saucer. Wait for a minute, then push the orange puddle with your finger. If the surface has set so that it wrinkles, the marmalade is ready. If not cook for a few more minutes before testing again. A proper jam-making pan with sloping sides is not essential but a large (nonreactive) pan is vital, as the bubbling hot liquid rises dramatically. Make sure the mixture reaches no more than two thirds of the way up. A jam funnel with an extra wide spout is a worthwhile investment as it takes all the stress out of filling the jars.

s I walked into The Hill (located, perhaps unsurprisingly, atop a small hill) the first thing that caught my eye was the glass display full of scrumptiouslooking desserts and cakes that made me consider skipping my main altogether and diving straight into pudding. I resisted this urge and instead approached the bar. The owner, Bryan Kelly, greeted us warmly and enquired as to where we would prefer to sit – the restaurant is divided into two distinct sections, each with their own character. At the front the seating is relaxed, sofas and armchairs dotted about in cosy twos or threes, clustered around low tables and nestled in nooks around the place. This style and the baby grand piano in the corner suggests

this would be a perfect place to curl up with a coffee and a book in the afternoon or to sit for a couple of cocktails or a bottle of wine in the evening. My companion and I opt for the slightly more formal dining section at the back of the room, which is more in the traditional dining room vein although in no way stuffy or pretentious. We go for a lovely Chilean merlot from The Hill’s newly instituted wine list. The menu has a diner-ish feel, with some real comfort food favourites including spicy chicken wings and nachos as well as some more unusual dishes like their Mexican Fishcakes, which consist of king prawns and hake with diced red and green peppers and Cajun spices. My companion orders the nachos with no hesitation whilst I decide that the breaded king prawns

just cannot be overlooked. I am not let down: a healthy portion of crispy, golden prawns served with a sweet chilli sauce appear and are completely gone within minutes. My companion takes slightly longer to demolish her generous helping of nachos with lashings of sour cream, salsa, guacamole topped with cheese and jalapenos but does so with no less relish. For my main I choose a dish called the Chicken New Yorker, which consists of chicken breast layered with smoky bacon, BBQ sauce and melted mature cheddar, served with thick cut chips and a dressed salad garnish. The chicken breast is flavoursome and perfectly cooked, the bacon sufficiently crispy and the BBQ sauce sweet without being sickly, however, it is the chips that really impress. I often find that chunky chips seem to present a unique challenge to chefs, usually landing on the stodgy and undercooked side. As a result I usually go for the skinny variety when offered a choice but these chips may have converted me. Crunchy without being burnt, they were absolutely perfect and despite being unable to finish my entire plate due to the size of my starter and the heartiness of my main, somehow the chips all managed to disappear. My companion made her selection from the list of gourmet handmade burgers on offer. A classic cheeseburger with bacon called ‘The American’ made from 100% pure beef had her sighing with contentment; and my rapture over the chunky chips was shared. The Hill has been in Bryan’s hands for ten years and was, until recently, a bar called the Question Bar, which was a hotspot for the quiet Forest Hill community. With this shift in style Bryan has not abandoned the bar element but has rather focussed in on the food aspect of things, sourcing quality ingredients to produce a simple but delicious menu. Mission accomplished and although my initial enthusiasm for pudding was stymied by my own overindulgence, I fully intend to return: the dessert display case and I will have our day. MERRYMAKER WITH ALL THE DEBATE SURROUNDING EDUCATION, WHY IS HAPPINESS NEVER ON THE AGENDA AND WHAT IS IT WE SHOULD REALLY BE TEACHING OUR CHILDREN? BY JEROME MONAHAN

Is it possible to leave early? My teacher doesn’t want me to miss her lesson’. Sympathetic as I am to the pressures that GCSEs and A-levels can bring, questions like these only confirm me in my belief that young people, and especially the high-fliers, need to be given the space to address the issue of their own happiness, however nebulous a subject that may seem when put alongside more rigid, curricular demands. Whatever else it may be, happiness is not irrelevant. Hardly a week passes without one report or another bubbling to the surface, exploring this oft-times elusive emotion. We question what it is, how we measure it, how much money we need to attain it (as it turns out, not much – chasing the higher salaries often does more to undermine our contentment than to add to it). The teaching of

well-being certainly hasn’t done the students at Wellington School any harm, or their celebrity head, Anthony Seldon; it’s been part of the curriculum there since 2006. ‘Happiness’ workshops for schools are becoming increasingly popular, most often commissioned for youngsters at points in their primary or secondary school lives when transition is on the horizon. In practice, ‘well-being’ or ‘contentment’ workshops may be better terms for what they offer. It would be fatuous to suggest that a single session could offer any kind of permanent change for the children; a long-term and far more embedded approach from schools is needed for that. A more modest aspiration, but important nonetheless, is that the participants of these sessions enjoy them. That they experience spontaneity and unselfconsciousness, and emerge

from the workshop with a better sense of what it means (and what it feels) to truly be content. If there were ever a topic designed to shatter the silo nature of subjectspecific courses, then happiness is it. How to lead the good life has been one of the most fundamental preoccupations of Western philosophic thinking since the times of Ancient Greece. Meditating on eudaimonia (human flourishing), Aristotle sparked off two and a half millennia of Western thought on the subject, so anyone looking to tackle the issue is more than spoilt for choice. The real challenge is to navigate a coherent path through the vast quantity of information and techniques on offer. For me, an ideal organising structure is to focus on the five contentment dispositions singled out by Nic Marks of the New Economics Foundation (those of the Happy Planet Index fame). These include the importance of ‘connecting with oneself and others’, of ‘noticing oneself and the world around one’, of ‘being active’, of ‘making learning a life-time pursuit’ and finally, of ‘helping others’. It seems to me that sessions should be active and playful; educationalist Sir Ken Robinson agrees with me. He believes teachers today live too much in their heads and make not nearly enough use of their bodies. For lots of students, who spend so much of their time relatively inactive, both in class and out, this issue of ‘bodyforgetfulness’ is an important one. A favourite element of the workshop, I find, emerges when the issue of being observant is addressed – that is, of the individual noticing their own state of mind and the world around them. One activity designed to elicit this involves discussing a sequence of paintings depicting children, spanning the 1640s – 1820s. Hogarth’s 1742 depiction of the Graham children excites the greatest response, particularly when the search begins for clues as to which child was already dead and buried when the group were painted. Here then, is a helpful reminder of the fleeting nature of life, especially children’s lives, in all the periods of history before our own – a sombre enough reminder that we should all learn to count our blessings. And perhaps, that rather than comparing ourselves with our contemporaries, there may be greater solace to be found in setting our own lives against the so often brief and uncomfortable lives of the historic Joneses.

A

nd so the pendulum swings again. Linearity is the government’s new mantra, in its plan for reforms to GCSE and A level. Probably some parents, and certainly grandparents, will recall the days when linearity was the established order of the day. You studied for two years (for O level and then for A level), did a mock exam to gain familiarity with the system, and then took the real thing right at the end of those two years. But then (according to Mr Gove) the rot set in. GCSE was introduced and A levels were re-structured to AS and A2.The qualifications were chopped into bite-sized ‘modules’, which could be examined as many times as it took to get a decent grade, and then ‘banked’. A ‘learn it, forget it’ culture developed, and grade inflation undermined the credibility of the system. So the government wants to return to linear courses with exams at the end. The ideal is certainly an honourable one – rather than taking up lots of valuable teaching and learning time with revising for modules and doing innumerable past papers as practice, courses can be constructed which are more challenging, more interesting and more meaningful. It doesn’t mean that pupils can’t check how well they are doing as they go along, because externally examined modules can be replaced by meaningful internal tests and progress checks – with high quality feedback.

The problem isn’t so much the principle behind it as the breakneck speed at which the reforms are being introduced - and not just fast, but all at once. Hence, ‘new’ GCSEs in English and maths will be first taught in Year 10 from September 2015, as will a tranche of new A level courses. The following year, the rest of the ‘core’ GCSE subjects come on stream, along with A levels in maths and languages. The GCSEs will be set at a different standard to the current versions, with a grading system from 9 (high) to 1 (low) rather than the current letter grades. For several years, there will be pupils with a mixture of different kinds of GCSE result, some in numbers and some in letters. A levels will be at the same standard and grading system as at present, but there is a deliberate intention, somehow, to make them ‘harder’ in terms of content – in most subjects (like sciences and business

studies) by adding more maths; in English literature, by adding more books. Unfortunately, the Department for Education’s suspicion of internal assessment means that components like practicals in science, and speaking and listening in languages, will be increasingly marginalised. The future of the AS level is in some doubt, because although it will be available, and is likely to cover the first year of the full A level course content (so might be seen as a progress check), results won’t count towards the final A level grade. A lot will depend on how universities view the AS results, and whether they encourage schools to continue with it. So although the general direction of the reforms is clear, there is still some uncertainty about how it will work out. As with any change to exams and qualifications, the role of teachers and the school is to act as shock absorber, ensuring that for the pupils the focus is always on high quality learning. Of course, exams aren’t everything in excellent schools like this one, pupils take them almost ‘in passing’, getting not just the best possible grades, but a lot more besides. Whatever the government edicts may be, it is now up to the teachers to ensure that pupils aren’t distracted or discouraged by the intricate workings of, and constant changes to, the exam system. sydenhamhighschool.gdst.net

redictions for 2014 are good, the market in the fashionable areas of London like East Dulwich has been rising and should continue to be strong well into 2014. Tenants are still flocking here rather than renting in the traditionally top priced areas of London like Mayfair and Islington, meaning that we are still seeing a strong demand and high rents in our local area. The impact of the Help to Buy Scheme is reported as being felt by many agents in the country. Some tenants who would have continued to rent in recent years rather than buying are now looking to purchase a property, but I feel this will have a less of an impact in the areas of London such as ours where the price of purchase is very high being between £250k -600k for a two bedroom flat. The purchaser still needs to save a 5% deposit, and this is difficult for tenants paying high rent to achieve. For those who have been able to save, there is apparently not enough property on the sales market to supply the demand in popular areas of London. We are still looking forward to a continued healthy lettings market in the year to come!

Th is has been prompted by the Government’s Help to Buy Scheme where the Government guarantees the lender 15% of the mortgage. The new lenders are not utilising this scheme as they consider that they can still offer competitive rates outside the scheme. The lenders have tightened the criteria for lending at this rate and only borrowers with excellent credit scores will be able to access these mortgages.HSBC and Virgin Money have announced that they are joining the Help to Buy Scheme and a number of other lenders are poised to join the scheme in January. On the negative side Funding for Lending has been withdrawn for home buying. 2014 should prove to be an interesting year for mortgage borrowers as the lenders compete for the business but keep an eye on interest rates as they might drift up as the year progresses and the lenders’ borrowing costs increase.

The government’s ‘Help to Buy Scheme’ has been a contributing factor, but the far larger cause is a shortage of stock. With so few properties hitting the market, competition is fierce when a new property is instructed, inflating prices as people battle it out to secure their home. This trend will continue in to 2014 unless we see a drastic increase in the amount of property available for sale. South London will become an increasingly popular draw for buyers thanks to the London Overground line and the surge in popularity of areas like Peckham, Brixton, Forest Hill, Sydenham and Crystal Palace. Gentrification and thriving local enterprises have helped in this regard too.

A

s a child I would count the doors & windows of properties as my parents drove by. In time the counting changed to pointing out the differences between this house & that house, which then developed into wondering what they were like inside. I think it’s safe to say I had a fascination with property from a very young age. At 23, with no knowledge, experience or advice, I crazily purchased my very first property, which was in need of complete refurbishment. The rest, as they say, is history. I started my career in agency 10 years ago in Bushells’ East Dulwich branch as a junior negotiator. I was amazed at how much there was to learn and how much actually goes into the selling process from beginning to end. I had only experienced it from a buyer’s point of view before and not recognised for a minute the hard work agents put in. After much success in East Dulwich I moved to Bushells Clapham and was promoted to senior negotiator and, soon after that, the Sales Manager. Through developing my career I have gained a wealth of experience in the South West London markets including Clapham, Balham, Tooting, Earlsfield & West Dulwich. I have also worked within the overseas property industry selling investment opportunities in Brazil, Spain, the Caribbean, Portugal & Bulgaria, but after all that I decided to come full circle right back to where it all started - Bushells in East Dulwich. It’s great to be back in East Dulwich, I am lucky to have witnessed the change within the area during the last 10 years, it’s really rewarding that there are still people in the area who I sold property to all those

years ago who actually remember me. It’s such a pleasure to walk into houses I once sold to a young couple and see them moving on as a family. East Dulwich has become quite a hot spot in South East London, with property prices still relatively affordable compared to alternative parts of London, but for an area that is no less attractive. The area offers great bars, restaurants, boutiques & organic food shops, fantastic transport links into the city, excellent private & state schools, lovely parks and green open spaces. Overall, the area has become a draw to both young professionals as well as families, and has a great community feel. The shortage of properties in 2013 saw prices rocket within a short space of time, creating a huge sense of urgency for buyers, with many losing out on sealed bids (something I hadn’t seen since 2006/2007). Available properties across the entire market are considerably down compared with 2012, but with a new confidence from buyers and sellers alike, I’m sure we are set for a fantastic 2014. As a result I’m very excited about the year ahead. With the help to buy scheme attracting even more buyers to the market, we know that the demand is going to be stronger than ever. However, because people want to set up in Dulwich in a home for life, available properties will be the big issue in servicing this demand.

he lettings market is governed by a number of factors at any one moment in time. An important document for all new landlords is an inventory and an independent check in and out (snapshot of the property at the beginning and end of the tenancy). This allows third party guidance on what’s fair and reasonable, other than wear and tear.
