EDITOR’S letter

J

une is my favourite month of the year. It’s officially summertime, the weather is (slightly) better, and it is finally my birthday. Yes, admittedly I’m a little biased but I truly believe June to be superior to every other month of the year, and just one glimpse at our diary pages will tell you why: festivals are in the offing, fashion gets an injection of vitality and all kinds of delicious food comes into season. If you don’t believe me, just look at this month’s issue. We kick off with our jam-packed culture diary on page 10 and an interview with the newest, brightest star in London’s Fashion firmament, Phoebe English. Find out why her latest exhibition at NOW Gallery in Greenwich is nothing like Alexander McQueen at the V&A on page 12. Around this time of year, the style stakes are really raised, with designers bringing out bold colours and fleshflashing confections. We get a glimpse of what inspires ethical fashion outlet Gather&See’s founder Stephanie Hogg

7 Dulwich_JUNE_EDS_LETTER.indd 7

on page 29, and if that doesn’t get your fashion juices flowing, then our retro, Studio 54-inspired shoot on page 20 definitely will. Don’t believe the rumours: disco is not dead. Still not satisfied? Perhaps some scrumptious recipes crammed with delectable seasonal ingredients from Chef Director of the Ivy, Tim Hughes on page 44 will convince you that June is peerless in terms of fantastic food and produce. If June in London doesn’t appeal, then perhaps June in Sicily will do the trick? Emma J Page samples a spot of la dolce vita and walks in the footsteps of Elizabeth Taylor on page 50. I hope you enjoy the issue and my favourite month of the year. Ciao! u

ARTS & CULTURE / WHAT’S ON DULWICH BOOKS THE LAST ACT OF LOVE Cathy Rentzenbr ink

£ 14 .9 9, Pa n Ma cm i lla n A car hit Cathy’s brother just two weeks before he got his GCSE results, which turned out to be the best in his school. This is Cathy’s raw, heartbreaking yet ultimately inspirational memoir through which she tells us that, after all the tears, it is possible to pick up the pieces post-tragedy, rebuild yourself and move forward. ◆

£ 7.9 9, Vi n ta ge This novel has the wholeness, harmony, and radiance of a Mozart String Quartet. McEwan’s subject is both familiar, in its humanity, and unfamiliar in its esoteric legal concerns. The style has a cyclical luxury that moves the language to evocative descriptions of Judge Fiona Maye’s journey through her increasingly complex world. ◆

Rebecca Wait

£ 1 2.9 9, P i ca d o r Wait’s debut novel, The View on the Way Down, was staggering, so I’ve been looking forward to this. Telling the story of a mother and her daughter who are drawn into a religious cult, the whole thing bubbles with tension. As time goes on they begin to doubt their decision but is there a way back? Wait doesn’t disappoint. ◆

A SPOOL OF BLUE THREAD Anne T yler

£ 18 .9 9, Vi n ta ge So deft of touch is Anne Tyler it is easy to underestimate this novel. A family saga of sorts, staged in the house that anchors them, we see slices of lives through three generations of the Whitshanks. This skilfully woven narrative is lightly drawn, with wonderful depth and subtlety. Shortlisted for the Bailey’s Prize, this would be a worthy winner indeed. ◆

£ 1 2.9 9, O r i o n Eva and Jim meet in Cambridge in 1958. What follows is three different incarnations of their love story, each one different because of a particular decision they made. Showing how small choices determine the twists and turns of life, this is a gem of a novel about the vagaries of life, the nature of love and the what-might-have-beens. A joy to read.

WORK IN PROGRESS A rising star in London’s fashion scene, Phoebe English speaks to Absolutely about the art of design and her new exhibition at Greenwich’s NOW Gallery W o r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

things by hand, you know, doing something really labour intensive. Also, exploring the light possibilities of that space because it's completely glass. So, fingers crossed it will come together.

CATHERINE HALES: What is your exhibition FLOATING, FALLING, DROWNING, FLYING about? PHOEBE ENGLISH: There are lots of different aspects; it’s now going to consist of a large scale installation, an exhibition, a film reel (they have a nice little cinema in there), some limited edition products that will be for sale and a book. So, yes it’s quite wide spectrum of things that I have accumulated. CH: What does the exhibition part entail? PE: It’s about putting on display the ephemera that happens as part of the development of a collection. Pieces of paper that you use whilst developing an idea that then just get shoved to the bottom of a cupboard or a piece of evidence that is representative of a very fleeting moment. So, it’s all the types of fashion ephemera that you have no access to in normal fashion shows but are key to your experiencing the collection: samples and trials and scribbly sketches and final sketches and line ups. CH: So, it’s the backstage? PE: Yeah, it’s always nice to peek backstage at the theatre and see the actual workings of how something functions. I suppose that each cabinet we are showing is a representation of how my mind has brought this body of work together.

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

DUL_JUNE15_PHOEBE ENGLISH.indd 12

CH: I am sure it will! Is the show more of a fashion rather than an art exhibition? PE: I don't know if I would describe it as a fashion exhibition. I don't know because there are so many different facets to it but I guess it’s an exhibition of working process and it just so happens that the ‘work’ part of it is within the fashion realm. But it is not mannequins with frocks on.

IT IS NOT

mannequins with FROCKS ON

CH: There’s an installation as well – what challenges were presented by that? PE: It’s an intense composition – it’s really big. It’s a textile piece that I designed to kind of play with NOW Gallery and the shape and height of the building and the gravitational potential that comes with it. It’s really a piece about gravity and textiles and making

CH: Not like Savage Beauty, the current Alexander McQueen show at the V&A. PE: No, its the antithesis of that: its very lo-fi. It’s all the scrappy bits, rather than the beautiful preened finished lines. CH: You’ve mentioned the glass – is that why the NOW Gallery appealed to you? PE: We pitched for it, so it was a long proposal process and it was just a really exciting space. We have done a lot of installations but never for a non-retail space, so that was interesting for me. It wasn't trying to make sales for shops, it was a pure creative thing. We have been working on it for 12 weeks now.

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE

CH: Do you like Greenwich? PE: It’s a beautiful place and I feel like there are exciting things happening there. And it just looks unlike any other area of London; it’s totally unique and I guess it does have a lot of touristic draw, but it's just so incredible. CH: Could you describe your process? PE: I think the process goes try, fail, try, fail, try, fail... try try try, in that order. Lots of trial and error. When I’m working on textiles we will do about 20 pre-samples before we get to the final one. I am always just trying to get things right. I’m not a referential designer, I work more in a

I WAS encouraged to draw on the WALLS OF THE HOUSE reactionary way using instinct and things like how I am feeling and how much money we have. CH: Could you describe your overall aesthetic? PE: I like people to be intrigued. I like collections to feel like a cabinet of curiosity that you want to inspect further. A lot of the details are really small; I’m not a silhouette designer, I don't do a striking silhouette from a distance. It’s more intimate and the details are quieter: a particular type of stitch or a tiny little button. That sort of thing is more intimate and personal. Quietly intriguing would be how I’d describe it. CH: Do you have any major influences? PE: Well, all of my family are artists, so they have been a heavy influence. Since I was young I was encouraged to

draw on all the walls of the house. My aunts especially were, and still are, key figures in my influence. I think it helped me to contextualize my own work quite well and at a young age. CH: Did that force you to develop your own identity quite early on? PE: Yes, I also knew that I didn't want to be an artist and that was probably the main thing that it gave me. I didn’t identify as one but I loved making work and had that drive to make things. Just I knew that it wasn't going to be paintings or sculptures. CH: Where do you source your materials? PE: I definitely keep it in the UK as much as I can, which is hard and you have to be immensely imaginative. We are a Made in England brand. All of our pieces are made in London and the materials are mostly made in the studios by freelancers. CH: What about the beads for the installation? PE: The beads are specially commissioned, because it needed to be quite strong

15 DUL_JUNE15_PHOEBE ENGLISH.indd 15

as it’s so tall and high. I think there is like 60,000 kilos or something like that. I don't know, it's a massive amount. CH: What’s next? PE: We have been nominated for the Woolmark Prize, then we are working on the next collection for September. The exhibition will be up for three months and there will be an open evening called NOW Late with specially commissioned music and an aerial display. The book will be coming out round about then, too. CH: Do you have an ultimate ambition? PE: I never imagined I’d be here now doing this so I don’t think that you can ever really plan for the future; you can just let it happen and hope for the best. ◆

V JEWELLERY Wo r d s s t e p h a n i e k i n g ttention fashion magpies: this is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill. SS15 is coming, and you need to be prepared. So heed our Public Service Announcement and arm yourself with summer’s hottest accessory label: two-time UK Watch & Jewellery Awards nominee, V Jewellery. No, literally; arm yourself with the covetable creations by this month's ‘Brand To Watch’. Whether it’s the fan favourite Simplicity Spine or Deco Chrysler rings, or the limited edition Astoria bracelet set in cubic zirconias, green adventurine and black agate, it is critical that you decorate your limbs with one of Laura Vann's lust-worthy pieces. Why? Because even though she only celebrated V Jewellery’s second anniversary in April, the West Midlands-based designer has already cemented her label on fashion’s most wanted list. Not bad for a Central Saint Martins Graduate who started a company at 22. Vann's impossibly cool pieces are often seen adorning the extremities of celebrities, It girls and bloggers, from Katy Perry to Millie Mackintosh. V Jewellery's timeless aesthetic withstands the rapidly changing fashion seasons. But surely accessories that expertly balance decadence with minimalism have an exorbitant price tag to match? Not the case; V Jewellery's Sterling Silver and semi-precious stone items start at the incredibly affordable £60. Achievable and aspirational? V Jewellery is the answer to every woman's prayers.u

FASHION / MY STYLE

STEPHANIE HOGG The Dulwich-based founder of ethical site Gather&See shares her inspirations gatherandsee.com ¡ What is your favourite film in terms of design? ¡ Out of Africa is a very evocative film for me in terms of design. The combination of location, costume design cinematography and of course Meryl Streep really captures a moment in time.

¡ What is your favourite era in fashion? ¡ I always look at the 1920s as an amazing era in fashion but from a personal point of view the 90’s have definitely played a large role in forming my fashion aesthetic - looking back there were some catastrophes but was the start of my love affair with clothes!

¡ Who are some of your favourite ethical fashion designers? ¡ We stock over 15 brands at Gather&See and obviously I think they are all amazing. Brands like Osei Duro are really leading the way with beautiful, on trend fashion with ethics at the heart of their values.

¡ What’s your favourite Dulwich hang out? ¡ Brick House cafe in East Dulwich - a very cool space with delicious bread!

¡ What is your favourite travel destination? ¡ I’ve been travelling to Sierra Leone for the last 10 years, so it will always have a place in my heart. But for relaxation where I can totally switch off and indulge it has to be the Ile de Re off the west coast of France. It really is the most beautiful spot.

¡ What is your favourite label/piece currently stocked on Gather&See? ¡ My favourite piece is

¡ What is your favourite piece of art? ¡ At the moment it is a piece by my sister Frances Hogg - called “Dots before my eyes” She creates huge abstract canvas paintings that you could stare at all day.

the Alix Beaumont dress, it’s organic cotton which makes it so soft and it fits perfectly!

¡ Who is your style icon? ¡ To be honest, I don’t have a style icon as such. I love London street style, its a great way to pick and choose which styles to follow - they always seem to be ahead of the game!

29 DULWICH_JUNE15_Moodboard.indd 29

¡ What is your most treasured possession? ¡ My wedding dress by Laure de Sagazan- it really is a work of art.

The best SPF products to keep your skin safe, pro blo and Sunborn Yacht’s floating spa W o r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

The

ELEMIS SPA Sunborn Yacht Hotel, E16 Wo r d s A ly H a z l e w o o d

he Sunborn Yacht Hotel is something of a floating palace, a 420ft yacht, with 135 rooms moored in the docks near ExCel, a mere 15-minute taxi ride from London City Airport. A spa on a moored yacht sounds impossibly glamorous, so I was happy to drag myself out into the freezing cold weather to travel halfway across London for some well-needed R&R. It brought to mind a glitzy ballroom from a bygone era crossed with a conference centre. Possibly the most impressive aspect are the striking river views and light drenched decks, I could well imagine the joy of a cocktail on the terrace in the summer months. There are 2 small treatment rooms and a shower facility on the Sunborn, and I have to say they were a little on the cold side due to the freezing temperatures outside, but I was given extra towels to keep warm. The Elemis spa prides itself on its age defying products, which combine active natural ingredients with cutting edge scientific technology and the excellent therapists will tailor skin-specific treatments to nourish, hydrate and renew, leaving you feeling relaxed and invigorated. My only complaint was the music in the spa rooms, it was improbably bad, a sort of mix between Richard Clayderman underpinned by an Irish tin whistle. Quite possibly the least relaxing music I’ve ever heard in a spa! My overall verdict is that this is a great resource for worn out Excel delegates, but don’t go there expecting a luxe experience. The treatment itself was lovely, but the space is functional and basic. ◆

Pasta with broad beans, tomatoes & feta

here is one particular grape variety that works so well with the fresh green flavour of broad beans, the tang of tomatoes and the chalky texture of feta, how can I recommend anything else? It’s Sauvignon Blanc. No matter where it’s grown it holds its identity well, making it a safe bet if you want zingy, freshly-cut herb flavours. Chile is still a very underrated country for this grape, so try this one, which is summer in a bottle. Carmen Wave Series Sauvignon Blanc 2014, £9.99; Majestic.co.uk u

Mackerel is so tasty by itself it doesn’t need to be dressed up too much, but as an oily fish, it’s useful to have superfresh wine to cut through that richness. Strawberries

he summery flavour of strawberries can be enhanced with many wines and a pink Champagne would be a delicious but decadent choice. If you don’t want to spend too much, there’s another hugely moreish Italian wine called Moscato d’Asti that’s a winner with strawberries and is usually more affordable too. It’s a slightly sweet and fizzy, low in alcohol and tastes of grapes and elderflowers, this one is seriously delicious. Einaudi Moscato d’Asti 2013, £13.50; ocado.com u

Buonissimo

We see what’s cooking at Olivelli, Lordship Lane’s own answer to delectable Italian cuisine Wo r d s C at h e r i n e h a l e s

hen most people think of East Dulwich, they think of Lordship Lane. The historic thoroughfare, birthplace of Enid Blyton and home to Concrete House, has become known in recent years for its culinary offerings and shopping opportunities. With the East Dulwich Picturehouse opening down the road, Olivelli fits into the scene perfectly. Spacious and ambient indoors and with ample outdoor seating for the upcoming balmy evenings of summer (which we here at Absolutely are convinced are just around the corner), the smart Italian and Sicilian restaurant appears very promising on first arrival. My companion and I are welcomed warmly and ushered to an intimate table for two near the back of the restaurant where we begin by eagerly scanning the

menu. The restaurant itself is completely full, with more hopeful diners appearing at the glass front door every ten minutes; clearly Olivelli has already established a good reputation. The menu is extensive and my friend and I are momentarily torn as to what to order.

41 DUL_JUNE15_Food_Review.indd 41

Eventually, with much deliberation, we decide on the Calamari Fritti served with Italian tartar sauce. The portion is healthy to say the least, with plenty for both of us and we tuck in immediately. The squid is cooked to perfection and manages to avoid that rubbery quality that calamari can sometimes have and is instead tender and flavoursome. The batter is crispy and light and not at all greasy while the tartar sauce adds a lovely texture. For our main course, my friend’s path and mine diverges as I opt for pasta

THE SQUID is cooked to PERFECTION,

FLAVOURSOME and she goes for pizza – when in Rome! I select the Penne Salmone, Scottish smoked salmon, artichokes, cream and a dash of pomodoro and my friend chooses the Campagnola Pizza, Chorizo, ‘nduja sausage, bufalina, mascarpone, rocket and tomato sauce. My pasta is just the right amount of al dente and the creamy salmon sauce is decadently delicious: rich and creamy, with a little sweetness added by the pomodoro. The pizza has a thin, crispy base in brilliant balance with the fresh toppings. The sweetness of the sauce contrasts well with the spiciness of the sausage and is elevated to excellence by the addition of the mascarpone. Despite this feast we decide to share a tiramisu. We do not regret our decision. Presented beautifully, the savoiardi maintain their integrity with no sogginess or heaviness – it is, in fact, wonderfully light and devilishly tasty. Without a doubt, we will be coming back for more very soon. u

FOODIE FUN Lewisham Shopping Centre’s abandoned 1950s Model Market has, once again, been transformed into a mustvisit destination for foodies and party-goers alike.

T

he insanely popular Street Feast has returned to Lewisham High Street – catering to London’s evergrowing appetite for gourmet street food. This event sees the abandoned 1950s indoor and outdoor market transformed into the Model Market – a buzzing epicentre of world-class street food. Having first come to Lewisham in 2014, things are being taken to the next level this year with a brilliant new roof bar and a terrace. This suntrap provides visitors with a place to relax or party with vinyl tunes being played from a host of DJs throughout the afternoon and night. Organised by Street Feast, the team

behind many of East London’s successful street food events (in partnership with Lewisham Shopping Centre), the Model Market is hosting a series of night markets featuring tastes from around the world. Must-tries include the authentic Caribbean fare at Mama's Jerk Station where you'll find an array of meat marinaded in a top-secret spicy jerk sauce topped off with a sweet tropical mayo. For modern Indian food, head to Rola Wala who will be bringing their unique British spin on traditional Indian cuisine to market. Combining Western tastes with that of Bombay, Kolkata and Keralan, this is a punchy fusion of sweet, spicy and sharp flavours. Meanwhile, among many others, you'll find smokey BBQ meats served from the back of an old sleeper train by Smoke

The most delicious of which is, arguably, the prawn Yum Bun: crispy chilli king prawns, gochugang mao, pickled onion, coriander and lettuce. Located right next door to Lewisham Shopping Centre, the Model Market provides you with the perfect excuse to combine a day of shopping at your favourite well-known high street fashion and lifestyle stores, with a night of street feast dining and dancing. Paul Redden, the centre’s manager, explained how thrilled both he and his team are to see the return of this event. “It’s not hard to see how this night time street food party has become so popular. Providing Lewisham locals, their family and friends from across the capital, with the perfect opportunity to come and party or catch-up and chill-out with good food and drink." “We’re delighted to be working, once again, with the Street Feast team on this

exciting initiative that attracts people from all over London. Street food is so popular and it creates such a buzz of atmosphere in Lewisham. The event really brings everyone together and shows how strong our community is. It’s such great news that Street Feast have decided to bring the event back for 2015.” The event, which is one of four taking place in east London, will run until Saturday 3 October. Taking place over 15 consecutive weekends, every Friday and Saturday, from 6pm until late, there's plenty of opportunity to make your way through the line-up of vendors. Plus, with five different bars, a Rum Shack and Rotary cocktails, you'll never go thirsty. At this market, there is something for all tastes and interests so why not while away those long summer evenings here? u

RED GURNARD SALAD With samphire & Jersey Royals

ritish gurnard is a sustainable and more affordable alternative to overfished species such as cod or monkfish. Recommended by the Marine Conservation Society in its Good Fish Guide (goodfishguide.co.uk), gurnard is making waves on the seafood scene and, according to Tim Hughes, also makes for superior fish fingers. Here, Hughes shows us how to cook up a fresh salad using red gurnard, Jersey Royals and samphire, which is at it's best in July and August. B

Serves 4 Ingredients

• 54 x 100g fillets of gurnard, pin-boned • 500g Jersey Royals, skins scrubbed, cooked • 100g samphire, woody stalks removed • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • Salt and ground white pepper • A large handful each of land cress and baby ruby chard leaves (alternatively, use a bag of mixed baby leaves) • ½ bunch chives, chopped

SEASONAL

For the dressing

1 tbsp tarragon vinegar 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil  2 tbsp extra virgin cold pressed rapeseed oil  2 tsp Dijon mustard  Pinch of caster sugar  1 clove of garlic, peeled (optional)  Salt and freshly ground black pepper 

Method 01 For the dressing, place all the ingredients into a jar and shake until emulsified. 02 Next, heat olive oil in a non-stick frying pan. 03 Season and cook the fillets, skin side down first, for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. 04 Remove from the pan and leave to cool. 05 Meanwhile bring a saucepan of unsalted water to the boil and blanch the samphire for 1 minute. 06 Strain in a colander. 07 Slice the cooked, warm Jersey Royals into rough 1cm slices and mix in a bowl with the samphire, salad leaves and half of the dressing. Season. 08 Arrange the salad on plates. Break up each fish fillet into 4 or 5 pieces and place on top. 09 Drizzle extra dressing on top and chopped chives. u

ROASTED BRILL On the bone with wild garlic mash and St George’s mushrooms

mong the family of flatfish, brill comes close to turbot for flavour and texture. Loved by our chefs for their firm texture and creamy, woody flavour, they often grow in abundant (fairy) rings in pasture, verges and woodland edges. Warning: as with all wild mushrooms, please be extremely careful as St George’s are easily confused with poisonous varieties. A

Ingredients

• 1 large brill, cut into 4 (on the bone) • 150g St George’s mushrooms, or other seasonal wild mushroom • 1 small shallot, finely chopped • Sunflower oil for frying • 60g unsalted butter • Juice of ½ lemon • ½ small bunch chives, chopped • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

classic spring dish at J Sheekey, with the first morels and white asparagus arriving at the restaurant from France in April. The freshness of both is paramount here so search out the finest supplier you can find. A

Ingredients

Method 01 To make the mash, boil the potatoes in a saucepan of salted water for 20 minutes or until soft, and drain well. 02 Mash in the pan until smooth or through a ricer (do not use a blender!). 03 Return to the heat, add milk and stir. Fold in butter then cream. 04 Finish with wild garlic, stir well, and season. 05 Keep warm. 06 Heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan. 07 Season the brill and cook for 5 minutes. 08 Turn over for a further 5 minutes. Remove and keep warm. 09 Wipe the pan with kitchen roll, heat oil, add the shallot and cook for 2 minutes without colour. Add St George’s mushrooms, turn up the heat and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until soft. 10 Add butter, lemon juice and chopped chives. Season. 11 To serve, spoon wild garlic mash onto each plate. 12 Place the brill on top and scatter with St George’s mushrooms. u

20 medium sized white asparagus 100g fresh morels, halved  2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped  30g unsalted butter  50ml white wine  250ml double cream  2 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan  ½ tbsp caster sugar  Juice of ½ lemon  ½ small bunch tarragon, chopped  Salt and freshly ground black pepper 

Method 01 Morels can be a bit gritty due to their honeycombed texture, so wash them a couple of times in cold water, drain and pat dry on kitchen paper. 02 In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt the butter and gently cook the shallots and morels for about 5 minutes, until soft. 03 Add the white wine and reduce by half. Add double cream, season and bring to a boil. 04 Simmer on a low heat until the sauce has reduced by half and

thickened. Add Parmesan and tarragon and place to one side. 05 Meanwhile cut about 3cm off the base of the asparagus (if woody cut a little more). 06 With a peeler, carefully peel, starting from 3cm down from the tip. 07 Bring a pan of well salted water to the boil with half a tablespoon of sugar and the juice of half a lemon. Simmer the asparagus for 10 to 15 minutes until the spears are tender to the point of a knife. 08 Carefully drain in a colander and arrange on plates. 09 Reheat the sauce and spoon over the tips of the asparagus. u T i p Adding a little sugar and lemon juice to water when cooking white asparagus gives it a slight sweet yet savoury flavour.

FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES avoury tarts are always a welcome addition to a summer menu, with their light filo pastry and delicious fillings. Add a little extra something by using windrush instead of ordinary goat’s cheese. Windrush is a British goat’s cheese produced in Oxfordshire with a slightly citrus flavour but any soft fresh goat’s cheese should work well in this dish. S

Serves 4 Ingredients

• 500g medium green asparagus, half-peeled, woody stems removed • 250g puff pastry • 1 medium sized free range egg, beaten • 30g freshly grated Parmesan • 50ml double cream • 20g unsalted butter • 120g Windrush goat’s cheese • Plain flour for dusting • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method

Pre heat the oven to 180°C / gas mark 4 Add the asparagus to a large saucepan of boiling lightly salted water and cook for about 5 minutes or until tender – check by cutting a little off a thick end to see if the knife cuts through it easily. 03 Drain in a colander and plunge into cold water. 04 Drain again and place to one side. 01

02

F o r t h e a s pa r ag u s p u r é e 01 Cut the tips off asparagus stalks (about 6cm) and leave to one side. 02 Chop the stalks, place them into a pan with the butter, cover with cream. 03 Bring to the boil, add Parmesan and cook for 5 minutes. 04 Take off the heat and liquidise.

01 On a floured surface, roll out the pastry to around 5mm thick. 02 Leave to rest for 15 minutes. 03 Cut out 4 rectangles 14cm long x 9cm wide. 04 Place on a greased baking tray, and prick all over with a fork to prevent the pastry rising too much. 05 From the rest of the pastry, cut 1cm wide strips as long as you can. 06 Brush the edges of the rectangles with beaten egg. 07 Lay the strips along the 2 long sides. 08 Finally, brush the edges with egg. 09 Leave to rest in the fridge for 1 hour. 10 Bake the pastry for 7 minutes. Remove from the oven. 11 Turn up the oven to 200°C / gas mark 6. 12 Spread about a tablespoon of the asparagus purée in the middle of each tart. 13 Don’t put too much in. Lay the asparagus tips on top of the purée and intersperse with pieces of goat’s cheese. 14 Season. 15 Bake the tarts for 8 minutes and serve immediately. u

We go in search of the good life in Sicily’s historic Taormina and discover ruins, cliffs and clear seas Wo r d s E m m a J Pag e

here aren’t many three wheelers that can instantly evoke the glamour of la dolce vita, but it turns out that a classic Italian Ape Calessino is an exception to the rule. It’s a warm, cloudless day and I’m travelling up a steep hillside on the way to the tiny village of Castelmola perched high on the crags above Taormina, overlooking the Ionian Sea on Sicily’s east coast. Classic car enthusiast Enzo is next to me, steering the vehicle with its scooter-style handlebars when we make a sudden, unscheduled stop by the roadside. Non-plussed, my eyes follow him as he leans over a low rock wall, fishing a penknife from his pocket. Moments later, he climbs backs into the Ape and hands me a freshly plucked fig. ‘Mangia, mangia,’ he instructs. And as I bite into the ripe fruit, I realize exactly why life on this island remains so intoxicating.

Taormina’s annual film festival made this pretty hilltop town the place to see and be seen in the 1950s and 60s. From Truman Capote and Sofia Lauren to Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, there’s barely a Hollywood name or Cinecittà legend who hasn’t ambled through its gardens, relaxed on a lushly planted terrace with a typical brioche and strawberry granita, or explored its dramatic coastline by fishing boat. But even the big stars who’ve made the area their home can’t outshine the town itself, uniquely positioned 200 metres above sea level, with direct views across to Mount Etna and presided over by an immaculately preserved Greek Theatre. Long before its dolce vita heyday, Taormina’s ancient buildings, clustered cheek-by-jowl across the hills, wowed early 19th century travellers on their Grand Tour of Europe, seduced by the town’s Palazzo Corvaja, with its Moorish origins and endless bougainvilleaclad alleyways. A steady stream of visitors has been flowing to the

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST oranges and lemons that Sicily is famous for, to almonds, olives, honey, prickly pears, aubergines, artichokes, capers and pistachios. And Planeta, the island’s famed winemaker, has opened a sixth vineyard right on the mountain’s slopes, producing award-winning reds, whites and roses, all from its mineral-rich soil. The day I visited for an informal tour, I joined the family, including celebrated wine connoisseur and chef Diego Planeta, for a hearty lunch of busiati con erbe spontanee (homemade pasta with wild greens) sitting at a sun-dappled trestle table in the shadow of a vast olive tree. You’ll soon discover than Sicilians are immensely hospitable people. The world’s cinematic gaze may have shifted elsewhere but the town remains as intriguing as ever. Wander through its lush public gardens, planted by English

THERE’S VERY MUCH an island ATMOSPHERE area ever since, many staying at the town’s oldest bolthole, The Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo with it’s sweeping views of the coast and fiery Mount Etna in its eyeline. Now the luxury hotel has expanded along the hillside and lost none of its original charm, with a vast, comfortable terrace, said to be the spot where DH Lawrence worked on Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Meanwhile, an ancient passageway connecting the building to the adjacent Greek Theatre still provides discreet access to the open-air stage for names including Sting and the stars of the Russian Moiseyev Ballet during the town’s annual festival. There’s plenty to explore in the area, from the lava-clad slopes of nearby Mount Etna, from which there are regular, largely harmless eruptions, forming part of daily Sicilian life, to small surrounding villages including Forza D’Agrò and the old shepherd’s sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca. And it’s not difficult to evoke a sense of retro glamour if you choose to unearth these treasures in a vintage car such as Enzo’s Ape, or a

classic Fiat 500. Otherwise, head to the Timeo’s sister residence, Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, if you want to retreat to its private gardens and relax on its stretch of shingle beach. Fortunately, the warm bath-like waters of the Ionian Sea and the sight of tiny Isola Bella, a small nature reserve marooned just off the coast, more than make up for any temporary discomfort underfoot. Both hotels allow their guests to share facilities, with a regular shuttle, or cable car, zipping between the two. Though mainland Italy is a only a few kilometres from this part of Sicily, there’s very much an island atmosphere here, largely due to its self-sufficiency. Mount Etna is as generous as she is temperamental: her surrounding fertile land produces abundant bounty, from the aristocrat Florence Trevelyan at the turn of the last century, pause for a drink at the Shaker bar, favourite haunt of Tennessee Williams, or drift through the Bay of the Sirens on a rainbow boat. I quickly discovered that it’s not at all difficult to conjure up your very own slice of la dolce vita here. ◆ u Emma travelled as a guest of Kirker Holidays. A four-night stay combining two nights at Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo and two nights at Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea is priced from £998pp (two sharing). It includes return flights from London to Catania, return private car transfers, accommodation with breakfast, and the services of the Kirker Concierge. THE HOTEL

B

uilt in 1867, the Culloden Estate and Spa was designed to be a palace for the Bishops of Down and subsequently stands in 12 acres of land, six miles out of Belfast. Blissfully private and conveniently located, famous guests often frequent the halls; rumour has it that one time Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga spontaneously duetted on the hotel’s grand piano. Decorated to be both traditional and homely with great big roaring fires and comfy armchairs, this is luxury at its most nostalgic. As the first hotel in Northern Ireland to be awarded with five stars it is known to be the best and indeed, it’s a good place to be.

W

ith a swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna in one light and open space, the spa at the Culloden provides a relaxing escape. Offering a wide range of ESPA treatments, I selected the full body massage which was very effective; using a clove-based oil my tired muscles, aches and pains were relieved and I was left fully restored. Proving that a spa day doesn’t have to be about moderation, the most popular package at the Culloden is the Hendrick’s gin tea day that includes a treatment and a three-tier feast of finger sandwiches, chocolate éclairs and warm cherry scones with a kettle of cucumber and mint infused gin.

H

aving bought the gatekeeper’s house at the Culloden, Van Morrison is one of the hotel’s most regular customers. Notoriously private, he keeps a low profile for the majority of the year, that is until he comes to play at the Culloden’s sister hotel, The Slieve Donard Resort and Spa. With only 350 seats available at each intimate dinner and gig, tickets are highly sought after. Believing that his songs are meant to be heard in small groups, these performances suit Morrison well, so he looks both comfortable and at ease. Pointing to his band members for solos, he cues the next song by shouting over to his stage manager and disappears once he’s had enough. It’s an incredible show and offers ‘Vanatics’ the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the man himself.

pider diagrams are a standard part of S school life, but here comes a book that takes the art of note-making using pictures, words and numbers to a higher level for younger children aged from six upwards. The publishers call them ‘infographics’ and here we see them put to use in colourful, interactive spreads on topics as diverse as life in the rainforest to mummification, from an alien’s guide to planet earth to a world population timeline. Interesting in itself, it could prove extra valuable as an encouragement for children’s creativity when it comes to their recording of factual information. ith summer holidays, sunshine and beaches just W around the corner, combining language lessons with water sports and cultural trips is an excellent way to boost your child’s skills, over the long break. At a recent Chatham House event, the place of English as a global language was discussed. Key points that resonated were that yes, English drives influence, but to act locally languages are essential. Europeans with languages are taking the jobs of Brits, who increasingly find that they can’t compete with their continental peers; and as competition for places heightens, leading MBA graduate schemes are viewing languages as a requirement. The learning and speaking of languages helps to make us recognise that the world is a multi-faceted place, with cultural and linguistic subtleties driving both family and business life. Aside from all of these formalities, languages make life richer, more vibrant; introducing them to your child early on will ensure that they can reap the benefits later on. 

few months ago, John Cridland, the Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) Director General, criticised the quality of science teaching in our primary schools: “Science education in primary schools is being squeezed out, with over half of teachers believing it has become less of a priority with too many schools struggling to teach the recommended two hours every week.” His remarks followed research carried out by Brunel University and the CBI, which also found a third of teachers lack confidence when teaching the subject. “How can we expect to inspire future generations of scientists and engineers if we don’t deliver high-quality and inspiring science lessons at primary school age?” asks Cridland. A new education company, Richer Education, has set up a Science Saturday School to tackle the problem. Conducted in partnership with Imperial College, London, the classes “aim to inspire and motivate children aged 5-11”, says cofounder Rafael Hernandez. “We want to get them while they are young,” he explains. “Science education in secondary schools is not engaging students, so we want to get students to really love it at primary so that they go on to study it successfully.” Hernandez, 42, a maths teacher originally from Venezuela, teamed up with Sian Chalkly, a science specialist and fellow teacher at a Woolwich secondary school, with the idea of providing inspiring, hands-on science lessons for children. “The emphasis in the classes is on practicals,” says Hernandez. “We want children to explore science with their own hands; they must touch and see at the same time as understanding the science behind it.” It is this practical element of science education that Hernandez says has fallen victim to the relentless target-driven culture of schools. State primaries generally have one teacher for everything and simply don’t have the time to cover the whole curriculum

67 Chiswick_JUNE15_Education.indd 67

as it is. A 2013 Ofsted investigation found that science lessons were not good enough in more than a quarter of schools and only one-in-20 teachers in primary schools holds a science degree. Secondary schools have the facilities and the specialist teachers but ‘teaching to the test’ rarely allows for the time for practical experiments or a deeper understanding of the topics. “It’s all about targets,” says Hernandez. “When there is a topic that might require greater in-depth explanation teachers just skip the subject altogether. “Things aren’t necessarily much better in the private sector. Prep schools often have the specialist teachers but rarely allow the time for practicals. For two hours every Saturday morning the children have access to Imperial College’s labs and facilities, where PhDladen scientists such as Sian Chalkly teach sessions linked to the Key Stage 2 curriculum, centred on a theme or topic that cover all three sciences and each session is based around a practical experiment. Future plans include further partnerships with universities across London. Ultimately, says Hernandez, “we are not reinventing the wheel or changing the world, we just want to get students to love science.”  For more information or to book a class, visit richereducation.co.uk/saturday-school

GREAT SHELFORD,

NEAR CAMBRIDGE

£1.25m

reat Shelford is one of those places dotted around Cambridge that are referred to as a ‘necklace village’ because, although they look and feel rural, they are only three or four miles from the centre of this venerable city of learning. What makes this village even more popular is that the M11 is just a few miles away to west, plus it has a train station from which the pin striped can be in Liverpool Street within an hour and 20 minutes. “You get a lot more for your money here – large four bedroom homes in central Cambridge are thin on the ground and a lot more expensive,” says Chris Carey of local agent Bidwells (01223 841842). Great Shelford is not a dying village and has a “good range of local facilities including a bank, butchers, doctor’s surgery, and a nice village community,” says Chris. G

had Thames is arguably where the gentrification of London’s former docklands began in earnest and was one of the first hunks of crumbling former wharf and warehouse to be smartened up into new apartments. This property is in the fragrantly named Saffron Wharf, which underwent its conversion during the mid-1990s and remains one of the more desirable of the Shad Thames blocks. Overall prices here reflect its location – you can walk to your job in the City in around 20 minutes S

for a longer commute? This month we look at two properties – a two bedroom apartment in Shad Thames and a Georgian detached, four bedroom house on the southern outskirts of Cambridge, both on the market for £1.25m, both ideal for City workers. Could you make the move?

over either London Bridge or Tower Bridge. But for many people it’s also the look and feel of the area that draws them in; the cobbled or partially cobbled street, brick archways and original vernacular of this former warehouse district make it unique for London. Later warehouse district developments along the Thames were either more clinically redeveloped (such as St Katherine’s Dock over the river in Wapping) or less well located. Within this flat in Shad Thames £1.25 million buys you two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a Juliet balcony, a porter, private parking and use of a communal gym. It’s on the market with local agent Cluttons (020 7407 3669). u

One property he currently has for sale in the village is an early Georgian property with Victorian additions that sits in the centre of a two-thirds-of-anacre plot of land. Because the house needs updating and expansion work it’s therefore keenly priced for a property within the Cambridge property market, one of the UK’s hottest – a status it’s had before, during and after the financial crisis. u

very Saturday on my way into the office, there’s one thing that never fails to amaze me. No matter whether the sun is shining or there’s three feet of snow underfoot, the people of East Dulwich will form an orderly queue trailing down Lordship Lane to buy their fresh meat from ‘William Rose’ the butcher. We might be in London, but the village butcher certainly lives on in a big way around here. But as much as the local amenities are certainly worth crossing the capital for, I must confess that there are bigger and more important reasons for buyers to move to this desirable South East London suburb. East Dulwich is fortunate enough to have excellent state primary schools, including Heber Primary School and Goodrich Community Primary School. Classroom places are hard fought for in this area and school catchment is always a

THE VILLAGE BUTCHER CERTAINLY LIVES ON IN A BIG WAY AROUND HERE

hot topic when considering what road to live on. Having said that, there are certain roads that are guaranteed to set hearts racing every time. One in particular is Bawdale Road. It offers well proportioned, red brick, bay-fronted period properties with decent sized gardens and large loft spaces primed for future expansion. We recently achieved £965,000 for a three double bedroom, one single bedroom property here. And the demand was so fierce that it didn’t even make it on to the web portals before an acceptable offer was achieved within 48 hours of bringing it to market. It’s this excitement that I find fascinating in the property market, especially in London.

Having studied architecture at university in my home town of Aberdeen, buildings and their mechanics, particularly houses, have always been of interest to me. I became an estate agent in 2006, and following the launch of our East Dulwich branch in January 2010 I’ve watched the area grow enormously in popularity, value and stature, thanks to the ever-growing desire amongst Londoners to flock to South East London. These Londoners are professional couples looking for their first property and families wanting to upsize. Popular purchases for first time buyers in the area are two bedroom garden flats costing as much as £650,000, while families looking for four bedroom houses can pay in excess of £1.2 million. With a High Street overflowing with boutique shops, cafes, restaurants and gastro pubs, and house prices increasing by 19% last year alone, East Dulwich really does have it all. u

his property has so many stories to tell that you’d never be short of dinner party topics – in fact, the kitchen/ diner was once the main recording room in a studio where Shirley Bassey, Queen, Bryan Ferry and John Lennon all laid down tracks. Such popularity has also brought attention from buyers; it’s currently one of the most popular properties on website, OnTheMarket.com, in London, which may be because any music fan is likely to have an interest in the address. More than 300 silver, gold and platinum discs were produced at Lansdowne Studios between the late 1950s and the early Noughties, and its musical past involved some pretty colourful visitors. After an all-night session, the Sex Pistols had sprayed shaving foam all over the studio window, their dog had messed on the carpet and they’d spilt wine over a mixing desk, according to the studio’s engineer. When it closed in 2006, the current owner completely renovated the space, discovering even more about its history. Built in 1904 as

LANSDOWNE HOUSE PREVIOUSLY HOUSED A STUDIO SPACE AS WELL AS A SMOKING ROOM AND EVEN A THERMAL BATH a place where struggling painters could work, Lansdowne House previously housed a studio space as well as a smoking room and even a thermal bath. The property was completely updated, two big skylights were installed, and there are now four double bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, along with two terraces, one of which can be used for parking. However, there are still nods to the past; in the wooden-panelled conservatory room, a cupboard retains the ornate Edwardian coat hooks that were used by the painters, while black-and-white photographs of the artists who recorded there hang on the white corridor walls – which Marsh and Parsons say could be included in the price. “Everything is open to negotiation and the apartment’s illustrious

111 B&C_June15_MOST POPULAR_For_C&A.indd 111

recent history is certainly beautifully documented by the photos – it would be a shame to see the collection and the property separated,” says Keith Gorny, Prime Sales Director at Marsh & Parsons’ Kensington branch. The maisonette, in Holland Park, London, has undergone such a successful and stylish transformation that it was featured in magazines and on TV shows, including Grand Designs. “While every property we deal with in Prime Central London has qualities that set it apart to a greater or lesser degree, this really is an exceptional space,” says Keith. Even though it’s priced at £7.5 million, the property isn’t at the top of the market in Notting Hill and Holland Park - a market that Keith says has quietened down a little locally. “Activity is thinner than over the corresponding period last year but this is to be expected during an election year,” he says. “Transactions continue and values are holding up. A notable Marsh & Parsons sale over the last month has included some record breaking prices, not least a Notting Hill house at £24 million that’s set a new precedent!” u

VICTORIAN VALUES Identikit investment to period perfection Wo r d s NIGEL LEWIS

T

here are a handful of facts about London’s Victorian homes that I reel out at dinner parties, in part to stop people asking how much their homes are worth, but really because I think they are astounding. If you live in a Victorian house or apartment in London then you are residing in a living piece of mind boggling history. The era, which in architectural terms lasted approximately 60 years, was so different from now it’s hard to paint a believable picture – and millions of Londoners live in the results. First, let me do the maths. Between 1841 and 1911 approximately 300,000 homes were built in London,

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

B&C_June15_PROP_SB_1pp.indd 118

many in a very similar style. This is ironic because, although we think of our city as largely a Victorian one, houses from the era now make up just 10% of the capital’s household total of 3.1 million. Another extraordinary fact is that 90% of London’s Victorian homes were built to be rented, and not owned. It was really only the larger properties, built for London’s super wealthy, that were bought. For the most part, the landlord (who was usually also the builder) controlled the property market. But another characteristic of the Victorian home – their uniformity – is less surprising. While many purists complain that ‘Barratt’ homes tend to all look the same, the same can be said for many Victorian

ABOVE 6 BEDROOM HOUSE, MACAULAY ROAD, CLAPHAM, £7.5M – SAVILLS, 020 8022 7409

A LACK OF ANY RULES MEANT VICTORIANS WERE FREE TO BUILD HOW THEY LIKED

ones. In the early days of Queen Victoria’s reign a lack of any rules about architecture, build quality or green belt meant Victorians were free to build how they liked. This, some argue, is why the identikit Victorian home is rife in London, and why so many of its Victorian streets look similar – because developers preferred the economy of off-theshelf designs. Despite this uniformity, period properties command a premium today. In 2013 researchers from property consultants Huntly Hopper found that period properties had risen in price four times faster than their new-build counterparts, particularly in central London. But what is it about Victorian homes that makes them so valuable? The most plausible answer to this question is that it’s all down to space and location. Victorian homes were built when London’s population was soaring, but still small by today’s standards (3.9 million in 1871 compared to 8.2 million today). The land in fast-expanding suburbs such as Islington, Paddington, Belgravia, Holborn, Finsbury, Shoreditch, Southwark and Lambeth was, in general, not expensive to buy and therefore builders had the luxury of space to play with – something their counterparts today do not. But let’s not forget design. Victorian homes also feature the kind of detail we like to believe is the mark of quality. The Gothic and Regency styles were usually the inspiration for these ‘dressings’ and can include pilasters and columns outside your front door, ornate window lintels and even pediments, large bay windows, the use of coloured bricks to create patterns, and decorative rooftops. With this much stacked in their favour, I guess I shall be talking about them over three courses for some time to come. u

We have the knowledge.

Unlike some of our competitors, we have spent many years selling and letting in property, solely in South East London. Our superior local knowledge means that we can offer (we believe) the best possible advice to vendors and landlords. You could almost say we’ve written the book on it. Pedder. Nobody knows South East London like we know South East London.
