Editor's Letter

I

t’s no secret that the South East is London’s artistic heartbeat, the centre from which new generations of artists flow out to the rest of the city, spreading good taste and errr, cheer? Alright, never mind the overblown metaphors. It’s safe to say that we’re really rather good at the art thing: be that drawings, paintings, installations or writing. And this issue is all about celebrating that artistic talent.

For starters we have artist Grace AzaSelinger who, in her most recent project, is exploring the unique character of Dulwich through portraits of the area’s own unique characters. See a selection of the locals who sat for her within. We also have a short story, written exclusively for Absolutely, by author of the moment Natalie Young. Like her new novel, Season to Taste, it is strange and beautiful and full of that uncanny sense of things going on just beneath the surface, felt but unseen.

Our main interview this month, however, is with an actor whose recent film everyone has seen (and rightly so), Chiwetel Ejiofor, OBE. The Dulwich College alumni has won a Bafta and (at the time of press) has been nominated for an Oscar for his stellar performance in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. We couldn’t think of a better person to lead our Arts Issue, or indeed to get our artistic hearts beating faster.

YVES SAINT LAURENT In Cinemas 21 March

he new biopic of French designer and fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent provides a glimpse into the dark glamour, and sometimes just the dark, fashion scene in France in the 1950s. Starting at the beginning of his career, the film examines the innovative designer’s burgeoning success as well as his intense relationship with Pierre Berge who was at once lover and business partner to Laurent. Directed by Jalil Lespert and starring Pierre Niney and

Guillaume Gallienne the film is one of two biopics of Yves Saint Laurent to be released this year and although Lespert’s offering boasts a slightly less starstudded cast, the wonderful costumes of Madeline Fontaine and Pierre Niney’s endearing performance are not to be underestimated. Anyone put off by the necessary reading of subtitles can find comfort in the fact that if the biopic is to stay true to its subject, the ‘Little Prince’ of fashion’s designs should do most of the talking anyway.

The people are pleasant which has led to me being a shopkeeper in Dulwich Village for 56 years.’

Grace AZA-SELINGER nce I started researching this idea, I met so many interesting people living in Dulwich. It was whilst sitting in a café on East Dulwich High Street that I started talking to a lady who told me that three generations of her family had been brought up here. Her father was a double amputee war veteran who had since dedicated his life to raising money for charity. I couldn’t help but think, ‘what an amazing story.’ A name which popped up more often than others was Brian Green, a shopkeeper who had been working in The Art Stationers in Dulwich Village for the past 56 years. His love of the area had led to him becoming a local historian and author with an in depth knowledge of Dulwich’s unique history. It was stories like these that confirmed my feeling that Dulwich was a special place with a strong sense of loyalty and care in the community. Whilst creating the portraits, my aim was to capture the spirit of each person depicted; to use the simplest method to produce a faithful interpretation of the sitter.

I like living in Dulwich because it’s familiar. I’ve been in this area since 1978. I’ve done Camberwell, Herne Hill and East Dulwich…and landed up in Dulwich. Tried North of the river for a year, made me feel ill!’

Hello, my name is Ilana and I’m addicted to East Dulwich.

It’s chronic – to the extent that I feel uneasy outside of SE22. Yep, I get the shakes when I leave the confines of our neighbourhood.

I

f there’s one thing South London is really, really good at, it’s art. It may have something to do with Camberwell Art College pulsing out plenty of talent, but sometimes it feels as though you can’t move for art students pounding the pavements. They’re easy to spot – they’re the ones who next season’s catwalk shows are based on, the ones who you do a double take at because you can’t quite work out if the bird nest in their hair – featuring an actual, taxidermied chick – is ‘arty’ or just a bit crazy. Probably both.

But while Camberwell and Peckham feature the coolerthan-thou kidz, my beloved East Dulwich has it’s own version of artistic dressing. People from other London boroughs may think it’s just middle-aged, middle-class laziness, but I reckon there is art in dressing head-to-toe in a combination of Boden, Fat Face, and Mint Velvet.

For if art is all about causing an emotional reaction (well that’s my take on it) then the standard East Dulwich uniform certainly provokes me.

Not a day goes past when I don’t play ‘fashion bingo’ on Lordship Lane. Chance of rain? Then I award myself 50 points for spotting someone in Hunter wellington boots (mud from the woods optional). A bit of sun peeping out from the everlasting clouds of this winter? Then the sunglasses come out and the East Dulwich yummy mummies make like Victoria Beckham as they drag their mini Harper-likes across the pavement. They’re less sunglasses and more horse blinkers because if you’re not dressed like one of the tribe then you may as well not exist.

And while I may sound a bit fed up of the East Dulwich uniform, I’m certainly not exempt from it. Many a time I’ve hopped on the Overground to Shoreditch dressed in my East Dulwich clothes only to be looked at oddly by my friends. ‘Why are you wearing UGGs and yoga pants?’ they ask me in horror. ‘What has happened to you?’

The thing is, I don’t quite know how to reply. The longer I live here (and the older I get) the more I transition from Camberwell cool to Dulwich (dare I say it?) dull, and it happens so seamlessly that I don’t even realise it’s happening. Thank God for the art students who sneer at me like I used to do to my elders. But what they don’t know – and what I do – is that sensible dressing – so apt in our pretend little village – happens to us all in the end.

t dawn, a racket of birds. Then the sun, its yellow fingers warming the holes in the curtains. In the bathroom, Sam bent over the faucet. Water chugged in the pipes, red with rust. There wasn’t any soap.

She cupped her hands under the stream of water, and pressed her face right in.

It was the beginning of Spring. She would stay six months. Her therapist in London had said, ‘it’s a dramatic thing to do’. By that she meant, taking leave of her job, her flat, moving to the woods where there would be no-one to talk to. But why talk about things any longer? Why maintain the fantasy about rediscovering childhood, playtime, mother and baby, at one hundred pounds an hour? ‘We’ve made progress,’ the therapist had said. Sam was forty-five.

She’d gone to therapy because she’d missed her chances in life. She’d been too hard on herself to play, too closed to meet someone and have a child.

On the step outside the house she bent under a line of silk on which a caterpillar twisted, tried to curl its green velvet rings up. Grass was growing in the cement between bricks on the path. Sam opened the gate. As she walked she heard the birds and the stream trickling in the dark wood.

The milk float appeared to be waiting for her when she got back to the house. It was parked in the trees ahead of the gate. For a moment it seemed as if no-one was there.

to see her. It grinned. It was a red head, oldish skin, a face lit up and soft with smiles. A hand came out and waved.

Sam drew level with the milk float and saw that the interior was painted with daises, yellow heads and smiling faces. He was old looking. Shorn white hair. And the skin on his neck was red and striated with white scars. 600 grams, Sam had bought last week of raw lamb’s neck to make the stew to feed herself for a week. 600 grams wasn’t a lot. Mashed up with carrots, onions, Worcestershire sauce, tomato puree, bay leaves, stock. This neck was like the piece of neck that had sat in the window

of the butcher’s shop in London too long that day – ‘Excuse me, Madame.

We don’t have anything of the sort in this shop, Madame – Gone a little grey in places. She had told the man it looked like old turd. In the background someone had sniggered.

‘If I don’t get out of the city I’ll....’ she’d started to say to the therapist.

The butcher had dropped the meat on the slab, ‘600g?’ then cut a sliver off the end to show her how pink inside. ‘Not grey,’ he’d said. ‘Not finished. Not yet.’

‘Hello!’ the man on the milk float was saying, smiling to show his square upper teeth. He jumped a little on the seat and re-positioned himself but his hands – younger

looking than his face - remained on the wheel rising out of the floor on a stem as thin as a golf club.

‘The milk,’ said Sam, pointing back towards the house. ‘Did you leave it on the step?’

He nodded.

‘Nice milk?’ he asked in an easygoing, friendly voice. He grinned and held out his hand. ‘My name is Pain. I deliver all the milk round here.’

Sam laughed. ‘Pain?

‘Painter. People call me pain. Did you think it was creamy?’

Sam saw the small black shoes working the peddles of the float as if it were already in motion.

‘Proper milk,’ said Pain, and there was a soft croak in his voice as he gripped the wheel and grinned forward into the shuttered lane.

‘That’s what we do here. And I’ll write you a chit for it. I come on Tuesday mornings and Thursday mornings,’ he said, turning now to face her. ‘I can bring milk, orange juice, pomegranate, pomegranate and blueberry, how long are you staying?’

‘Just milk,’ said Sam and she stepped back as the key was turned in the float’s ignition and one of the small black shoes pressed firmly into the floor. The float rattled into life and screeched in the lane.

Sam stood still and watched it go.

In a minute or two she saw the red brake lights coming on and the milk float stopped half way down the dark lane. She saw the man, Pain, get out, two white sticks shot out to the side of the float, were bent, he jumped. A bottle was taken out of the back of the float and left in the trees. There was nothing down there but more trees, and swamp. Even so Pain had left a bottle of milk there.

The whistling stopped. He got back in the float and disappeared.

hough Alan Johnson was Home Secretary during the last Labour government, and while there is some focus on that period of his life, his autobiography covers much more than that. The story moves from post-war austerity in pre-gentrified Notting Hill, through the race riots, through school on the King’s Road in the Swinging Sixties, and onto the rock ‘n’ roll years of the 70s. He takes us through making a record in Denmark Street and becoming a husband and father whilst still in his teens and pulls us along with a pacey and enjoyable writing style. It is his refreshing honesty and matter-of-fact approach that makes this an eminently enjoyable and entertaining read. Despite being an autobiography, the book is not just about the author. Johnson focuses just as much on two amazing women, his

on John James Audubon I started drawing birds over my Moleskine diaries before I knew of Audubon’s ornithological body of work. However, as my interest in natural illustration grew, I discovered his wonderful collection, The Birds of America. I particularly love his exclusion of backgrounds, so one can focus purely on the birds. His works are beautiful and skilful, and not simply illustrations.

I often find myself drawn towards the Thames for inspiration and can’t help but revisit the wonderful prints and paintings that Whistler produced of the river and the life along it. I moved down from Grimsby to study art; he came over from America a century earlier, settling by the river where he made the Thames etchings that have recently been shown at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. The Thames is constantly changing but Whistler’s rich etchings will always provide a visceral insight into living at that moment, produced with an incredible eye for composition and technical brilliance.

on David Hockney

Hockney’s prints, particularly his illustrations for Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm (1969), inspire my drawing and current forays into printmaking. I particularly love the fineness and quality of the lines: in some these are used to build wonderful depths of tone; in others their sparseness is atmospheric. The characters, perfectly pitched to the dark undertones of the stories, are freakish. Depicted behind glass, eggshell, fish skin and ice, riding spoons and tearing themselves into pieces, they are intriguingly scary. To me, these works are a sort of fusion of Albrecht Dürer’s craft with David Shrigley’s oddness.

I’m inspired by work which generates intense emotions, so for me there is no one more inspirational than Mark Rothko. Walk into a room filled with his large dark paintings and you can feel the intense presence in that room straight away; it’s enough to give you a headache. I love his simple approach and technique, and I try to take this approach with my photography. I’ve always thought it’s what you leave out of an image that is just as important as what you put in. I try to show just enough to tell a story.

Sound challenges my reality. It evokes another world beyond what I am seeing. Where am I? What lies beneath here? Janet Cardiff’s audio work, The Missing Voice (Case Study B), has been an inspiration for my practice. Cardiff’s work sits in-between reality and a ficticious world created by her. By evoking a sense of sound within my two dimensional work I try to capture the liminal space between two notions: reality and fiction, oneself and one’s mirror image, the surface and the beyond.

The artist Prunella Clough is a firm favourite of mine. Apart from being recognised as one of the most important abstract painters of the 20th Century, she also had an uninhibited approach to materials. She rightly drew no distinction between the traditional tools of her trade and the miscellany of everyday materials as long as the final image worked.

Clough’s attitude to image making is important to me as an artist who works in the under-represented fine art practice of printmaking and likes to revise traditional material and formal rules.

Here Absolutely catches-up with Dulwich College alumni Chiwetel Ejiofor to talk drama, responsibility and race.

M

uch has been made of Chiwetel Ejiofor’s screen presence. The quiet poise of his performance in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave so engaged critics and audiences that (at the time of this issue going to press) he had been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar and won a Best Leading Actor Bafta. And as those who watched his Bafta acceptance speech will attest to, his screen presence is no trick of camera or light, no careful editing or magical angles, it is all very much Eijofor. Indeed, the barely-there tremor in his voice – the deep, rich timbre of which has previously so hypnotised theatre audiences – was somehow more affecting in its restraint than any overblown statements of emotion could have been. He brought a tear to the eye of almost everyone watching. And that’s was just Eijofor being Eijofor. It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that he has already won an Olivier Award (again, for leading actor in 2007’s Donmar Warehouse version of Othello) and is now being hailed as one of the greatest actors of our time.

Born in Forest Gate, Eijofor attended Dulwich College and credits a love of books and reading as the thing that first sparked his

interest in the stage. Acting was cemented into a lifelong passion at the school thanks to parts such as Angelo in Measure for Measure. Now through playing Solomon Northup a free black man, abducted and sold into slavery Eijofor (who at 36 has been acting for over 17 years) has finally and spectacularly been brought to the world’s attention. And as his Bafta speech – in which he offered the award to McQueen, in recognition of his passion and vision as a director – might show you, he’s not letting it go to his head.

Absolutely: Congratulations on your performance. How did you get the role?

Chiwetel Ejiofor: Well, I got a call from [director] Steve McQueen about nine months before we actually started shooting. He asked me to take a look at the script and I did. I just thought it was an incredibly moving, powerful and unique story. And I had never heard of it before; I had never heard of the book or Solomon’s experience. So, it was quite a shock and it was a lot to take on. So I went back and I looked at the autobiography, and then I was just kind of amazed by him, by Solomon, and his insane sort of odyssey that he went through over those 12 years. It took a moment to try and figure out whether I could do it. I suppose it was sort of double fold, the sense of this responsibility of taking on something like Solomon Northup and what that would mean to him and his descendents and so on. And then obviously the wider issues of slavery and the responsibility of taking that on as an issue.

AB: What responsibility did you feel?

CE: I think it’s just the topic of slavery. It’s something that hasn’t been looked at on film in any specific detail, especially in terms of the actual day-to-day, inner life of the slaves. In fact I don’t think I can

The sense of this responsibility of taking on...Solomon Northup and what that would mean to him and his descendents...and then the wider issues of slavery...’ really remember anything since Roots, any story that really talked about this as its main premise. So, I felt that to try and do a story like that, you would have to get it right in the sense of being historically accurate. And secondly, you would want to convey all the complexities of that life and what that would mean. In a way it escapes some of the clichés or some of the things that we don’t know, some of the assumptions that we make about that period, about people who were slaves and what their daily lives were like, what their existences were like and make it real for an audience

all these years later. Otherwise, it would seem unnecessary to go into it unless you could bring something fresh out of it, something that could make a new conversation.

AB: Were you able to get out of the character easily? What did you do after a day of shooting to let go of the heaviness?

CE: The bits of myself that I couldn’t shake off in terms of the day, were natural. It wasn’t that I was imposing that on myself but I wanted to stay in character, and I wanted to take it through to the next day.

So we would all go out, we would go out into New Orleans and we would have dinner, a few drinks and get to know each other and chat about other stuff. And sometimes we would chat about the stuff we were doing, but a lot of the time it was about other things. And then after the whole process, it took a little time actually, once we had finished shooting, it took me almost as much time as the shoot to sort of extract myself from that world.

It was like going down the rabbit hole because it was so immersive. Being in Louisiana, being in that kind of heat, going through that kind of experience and referencing Solomon Northup and his journey everyday, every hour of the day, apart from the evening, it took a little while to kind of….. it’s hard to describe….to re-find myself, I suppose.

AB: So what did you do?

CE: I actually went to New York. I took a flat there because I used to live in New York about ten years ago for a couple of years. For me, it’s a nice decompression place actually because I used to live there all those years ago but I don’t know so many people that I can’t be isolated if I wanted to be and I don’t know too few to be a little bit engaged if I want. I thought that if I went straight to London or to LA or whatever, people would think I was crazy, [laughs] because I was still so caught up in what we had been doing. I just needed somewhere else to have a little buffer and get back into the real world.

AB: Did you learn to play the violin for the part?

CE: I did. I learned how to play the violin.

Or at least I learned how to play this specific song that I was playing. As it turns out, though, the violin is a very tricky instrument. Also, I think it’s a very difficult instrument if you are going to try and fake it, in fact I realised quite early on that you

For so long I think people were just told, ‘Well, these films don’t sell; you have black leads, who is going to buy it?’’ can’t fake it, you just can’t. So I got a violin teacher and she was great. We would practice [outside of work] and then when we had any time [on set], lunch breaks or whatever, we would just carry on practicing. It was good to learn the tunes, and the different positions for real, because some of the songs, well, it’s a fiddling thing which is quite complicated. I just tried to practice it as much as possible, to at least try and get the sense of it as accurately as I could.

music that he’s been learning. So he was always like, ‘I could play that, but now it looks like I can’t!’ But that didn’t happen here.

AB: 2013 was a very interesting year for topics about slavery.

There’s The Butler, Fruitvale Station, a lot of black content.

Do you think it’s a special year this year or is it just coincidence?

CE: I don’t know. I mean, we are just going to have to wait and see whether that’s part of a trend or whether it is just a coincidence that these things sort of come together

AB: Did Benedict Cumberbatch give you any tips? Because I think he learned it for Sherlock Holmes?

CE: He said that, [laughs] because of the the way that they cut it, he always looks like he can’t play, even if he is actually playing. They just cut it in this strange way. Or they just don’t let it run with the same at the same time. I certainly don’t think anyone was thinking in terms of that kind of timing but there’s an overall connection between these things. So, in a sense they did all come up independently. And it’s hard to know whether it’s something that is time specific but I like the idea that all of these projects are about the free market because for so long, I think people were just told, ‘Well these films don’t sell; you have black leads, who is going to buy it?’ And apart from one or two people who are big movie stars, they can’t get this kind of thing out to the public. Now, films like The Help and The Butler are putting paid to that, showing that there obviously is a market and the free market will always decide these things in the end.

If people are interested and do want to see these movies, there shouldn’t be any reason that they can’t get made.

P

lus One Gallery artist Paul Day has spent over twenty years developing a highly personal approach to figurative sculpture with a particular interest in representing the figure in architectural space using high-relief, an art form that combines drawn composition and fully rounded sculpture.

Over the years he has developed a form of art singularly difficult to categorise in terms of contemporary artistic idioms. His high relief sculptures in terracotta, resin and bronze have been exhibited widely in Europe and are appreciated not least for their peculiarly

personal approach to perspective, as seen in Brussels, an urban comedy, a 25 metre long terracotta frieze in the Royal Galleries of SaintHubert in Brussels. His exhibitions attract considerable interest from both the public and media alike This appeal of an artist who is unquestionably of his time but whose world links up with a longstanding tradition is rare.

Day has the themes of urbanity and the City at the heart of his artistic practice and, in order to represent them, has elaborated a perspective of subjectivity.

Since his first solo show in Paris in 1995, Paul Day has undertaken many commissions and exhibitions in Europe, the United States and Canada. It was in 2001 that Paul Day was chosen to create a monument to the Battle of Britain, the completed work which sits on the Victoria Embankment. This was the first public monument to be sited in his home country.

Since then other monuments in London have followed, notably The Meeting Place in St Pancras International Station (a 9 meter tall sculpture) and The Queen Mother Memorial on the Mall.

Day’s pieces can be found in various important collections, including but not limited to Buckingham Palace, The Palace of Westminster, the Fine Art Museum of Houston, USA,

Arizona State University Museum, USA, The Gardiner Museum of Ceramics, Toronto, Brussels Regional Parliament and Mannheimer Versicherung, Germany. There is a permanent Paul Day exhibition in Musee des Beaux Arts, Beaune, France.

Paul Day lives and works in France and is represented by Plus One Gallery. The exhibition runs from 26th March-19th April.

LAWRENCE ROULLIER WHITE EXPLORES THE ARTISTRY OF SCENT

he artistry of scent making is often spoken about in musical terms; the construction of a scent is described as having notes and accords. Fragrance guru Michael Donovan – UK spokesperson for some of the world’s most prestigious perfume brands – will often describe a complicated scent as being like a symphony: each note dependent on the notes around it, with some in the foreground and some in the background, coming together with cacophonous effect. These art forms, music and perfumery, are similarly intangible: one can look at a picture and perhaps imagine its starting point but to get an unimagined melody onto paper or a perfectly conceived scent into the bottle is much more mysterious. Equally mysteriously, music is carried to the ear as invisibly as scent is carried to the olfactory glands.

Again one may look at a painting and say ‘you can almost smell the flowers’, but such is the power of scent that one sniff and the mind

is flooded with visual imagery.

Some perfume-makers turn this on its head and choose art as the medium through which to brief their ‘noses’. Icelandic Andrea Maack creates an artwork to give her nose the inspiration for a new perfume. And Maack’s fragrances have two things in common: her expert vision and her genius signature. The perfumes are a testament to the success of the creative process that she has in place with Craft (1) having a huge following and being one of the best fragrances I think I have ever smelled.

Some perfumers, such as rock-and-roll maverick-maker Mark Buxton, a Yorkshireman living in Paris, seek inspiration from other art forms. Buxton’s perfumes are full of musical reference with names such as Devil in Disguise (2) Sexual Healing and Emotional Rescue.

Whilst others, such as former historian turned luxury scent

maker Nicolas de Barry, create perfumes with an artistic muse in mind. L’Eau de George Sand (3), is a much-loved fragrance created in honour of the much-admired female French novelist, George Sand. Perfumer Gérald Ghislain also seeks inspiration in the literary world, his brand Histoires de Parfums similarly carrying a tribute to Sand in his scent 1804 (5), the year of her birth. This is a gorgeously fruity concoction, ripe with pineapple and heady gardenia. Ghislain’s newest release, 1899 (4), is an ode to Hemingway and his many exotic travels, underlined, of course, with the requisite Scotch.

This merging of the art forms and senses also has a science attached to it. Sadly due to its extremely subjective nature the science is little understood, but it has been responsible for some major masterpieces. Synesthesia is a condition (which may go unnoticed by those that have it) whereby the physical world is

perceived entirely or partially differently. Often one sense is muddled with another or there is a blending of all, or some, of the sense. David Hockney, for example, ‘sees’ music as colours, Kandinsky’s perception of sight, sound, touch and smell were all merged and composer Olivier Messiaen used his unusual perception of colour in the creation of his chord construction. Perfume curator extraordinaire Frederic Malle, has used his synesthesia to great and very positive effect. Not least in his recent range of releases for Liberty (6). Celebrating the store’s 140 years, Malle was given access-all-areas to the company’s archives where he was able to search out the original Liberty prints which best suited the fragrances as he ‘saw’ them. The result is a wonderful insight into the mind of a creative genius and hugely respected player, who himself refers to his perfume releases as editions, much as an artist or author might.

had people come alone and actually they’re often the most gregarious, the most fun. Sometimes people meet and go on dates straight after, which is so brilliant.’

More lithe and lovely in real life that in the pictures that I’d seen, Rosie exudes an air of calm cheeriness, an air that suffuses her whole flat with the homely vibe that people have so praised in reviews of previous Camberwell Kitchen supper clubs. ‘It was my boyfriend’s idea to start it,’ she explains. ‘We just thought [hosting] a supper club would be really cool but our flat is so tiny that we assumed we could never do it. It wasn’t until we realised that the sofas fitted through our flatmate’s bedroom door, meaning that we could push them in and set up a table in the living room that we

few weeks ago I was caught in the kind of relentless downpour that turns the streets aquatic. Rivulets gushed along roadsides and the rain fell with such force that it reverberated off the ground. It was raining down, it was raining up and I was soaked to the point of drowning.

As you can imagine I felt immensely sorry for myself. This was not at all the poised start I’d envisaged for my interview with Rosie Norman.

We’d arranged for it to take place at her flat where - along with her boyfriend, Ant - she hosts the Camberwell Kitchen supper clubs that have become such a sensation since they launched last summer.

It is also the base from which she runs her nutrition and health blog, Gluten-Free Rosie.

‘Poor you!’ A wide-eyed Rosie opens the door when I arrive. She ushers me in, takes my coat to her drying room and has a cup of tea in my hands within minutes. She even pretends not to notice the wild look that I have about me, the look of someone who had just battled the elements and almost lost. This is quite obviously a testament to the stellar hosting skills that, I imagine, one would need to regularly cook for fourteen strangers. ‘Oh but the people have always been lovely,’ Rosie assures me, affably, when I ask what that’s like. Not even one weirdo? ‘No, maybe we’ve been lucky but everyone has been friendly and normal. Usually people come in pairs or small groups, but we’ve also

seriously began considering it. We both really enjoy going to supper clubs and saw a market for glutenfree. At the moment we’re the only gluten-free supper club in London.’

This particular USP has so far worked well for the pair, with diners intrigued by the idea of cooking without any wheat, barley or rye, staple grains that appear in so many of our foods. My assumptions before meeting Rosie were what I imagine most of yours might be: that the gluten-free aspect of the supper clubs, and the gluten-free focus of her blog, is a savvy ploy to tap into another food fad that promises to make you thinner, live longer and generally turn you into Gwyneth Paltrow’s hotter doppelganger. I also assumed that if Rosie did follow a gluten-free diet 100% of the time, it was a lifestyle choice, not a lifestyle necessity. As it turns out, I was wrong.

‘No, I have coeliac disease,’ she explains matter-of-factly. ‘And actually, despite what you might read in the papers going glutenfree unnecessarily has no real health benefits, it won’t make you more radiant.’ Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine, meaning that gluten wears away the villi through which nutrients from food are absorbed into the body, which can lead to life-threatening deficiencies.

‘My whole family are really tall, my brother is about 6ft 8, so I’m small compared to them; my growth was stunted because of the coeliac.’

Though Rosie does talk about being a coeliac on her blog, and despite having read various posts she’d written about the condition, it is relatively underplayed. ‘I think it’s important to focus on what you can have, on the foods you can eat. It’s a much more positive way to approach gluten-free. If you start listing all the things that you can’t have, it would drive you mad.’ In fact, Rosie’s condition is so severe that even sharing a toaster with non-sufferers can cause problems. ‘I use these little toaster bags so that there’s no cross-contamination, just in case.’

Growing up in Suffolk – ‘it was an idyllic childhood, running around outside, climbing trees, baking’ – Rosie was diagnosed as coeliac when she was 12. ‘I had to become really aware of what I was eating. I was

This might include photographing the places that inspire your food, planning the menu, picking up meat from your favourite butcher or guests sitting around the table. We find Twitter best for interacting with guests and Instagram is a great way for people to quickly get a feel for what you’re about.

Plan a detailed cooking itinerary for the day and cross off jobs as you go along. We find it’s easiest to work out a plan by working backwards from the time we want to serve the last course.

having meetings with the school to discuss food so I had to know much more than most people my age.’ It wasn’t until she went to university, though, that she began to think more seriously about how her diet could improve. ‘People assume that if something is gluten-free, it’s automatically healthy, but that’s not the case. Most things, like glutenfree bread, are heavily processed and the food isn’t necessarily very nutrient-dense. Much of the food I make now is designed to be as nutritious as possible.’

Currently in her third year (of four) studying Nutrition & Dietetics at King’s College, Rosie’s understanding of food and its impact on the body has become increasingly scientific. ‘If at the beginning of the course I’d been able to see into the

The first thing we do on a supper club day is set up the tables as this allows us to concentrate solely on the food. We used to hire trestle tables which we had to pick up from Bermondsey. This was time consuming and expensive. We now own some fantastic fold-up trestle tables which we keep in our loft.

future at how difficult it was going to be, I might not have done it, it’s very medical in it’s approach.’ And actually spending time talking with Rosie about nutrition and food is almost like spending time with a very patient GP, her answers are so measured and so informative that you can’t help but keep asking.

We spend so long chatting, in fact, that the rain stops, the skies clear and my coat dries. ‘I’m making a gluten-free wholegrain bread this afternoon,’ Rosie tells me brightly as I get up to leave. I consider asking to stay, because, at that moment I couldn’t think of a more pleasant way to spend an afternoon. But realising that I risk becoming one of those weirdos I asked about when I first arrived, I decide against it.

Rosie’s remarkable ability to make you feel so at home so quickly is undoubtedly one of the reasons why The Camberwell Kitchen has become so popular (though, the delicious dishes probably have a lot to do with it as well). Tickets to their last supper club sold out in under a minute and whilst there are some nebulous plans to expand, perhaps next summer, they are still enjoying their success on a smaller scale.

It becomes apparent a few days later, when I follow up with an email asking Rosie for some recipes, that her most remarkable quality is, however, something else. ‘I’m quite badly dyslexic and an awful speller so I’m really sorry if there are any mistakes’ is how she opens her reply.

Despite this, her blog is wonderfully readable and updated daily. Just as she has made the very best any one could of being a coeliac, so she hasn’t allowed her dyslexia to stop her from writing a blog, that – go now and look for yourself – is pretty word-dense.

It’s the kind of blithe tenacity, so joyful to encounter, and so rare, that I’ll be reminding myself of next time I’m brought low by a little rainstorm. glutenfreerosie.com

I came up with these pancakes when I didn’t have any flour to hand – just some gluten-free oats which I ground up in a food processor. This recipe can be substituted with other gluten-free flours such as buckwheat which is deliciously nutty. I originally made the recipe with plain yoghurt on top, but after my boyfriend recently made an amazing Ottolenghi sumac and sour cream sauce, I knew the sour garlic and lemony hit would work perfectly instead.

Ingredients (feeds x4 people for brunch) • Pancake dry ingredients • 150g certified gluten-free oats (processed into a fine flour) • 1 tsp gluten-free baking powder • 1 large handful of spinach leaves (finely chopped) • Pinch of salt and pepper • Pancake wet ingredients • 250ml milk • 1 egg (whisked) • 2 tbsp melted butter • Sumac sour cream sauce ingredients • 50g sour cream • 75g Greek yogurt • 1/2 tsp grated lemon zest • 1/2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 small garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbsp tablespoon olive oil • 1/2 tbsp sumac (a tangy, lemony spice which you can buy in all large Turkish, Arabic and Iranian supermarkets) • 1 pinch of salt and black pepper • Piling on top ingredients • 4 tsp smoked paprika • 4 slices of smoked salmon • 4 eggs • 4 tsp fresh coriander Method Sift and whisk the flour and baking powder in a large bowl. Mix in finely chopped spinach leaves.

Make a well in the centre of the flour mix and slowly add the wet ingredients, whisking well until you have a smooth batter. Leave the batter to rest for 30 minutes. This allows the baking powder to form bubbles, leading to light and fluffy pancakes.

Meanwhile you can make your sumac cream sauce, cook your egg and prepare your toppings.

First make the sour cream sauce by placing all the ingredients in a small bowl. Stir well and set aside. For the egg you’ll want to have a runny yolk so either poach an egg for 2 minutes or boil an egg for 5 minutes (and then remove the shell from the boiled egg under cold running water). Set the eggs aside while you quickly cook the pancakes.

Cook the four pancakes in a hot pan, turning when bubbles are on the surface transferring them to a plate with tin foil on top to keep them warm.

here were some super new additions to the South East London food and drink scene at the latter end of last year. Belair House opened its fancy doors in Dulwich and Peckham Bazaar impressed the critics with its Balkan inspired food on Consort Road. Peckham Springs popped-up and stayed up, with a permanent residency underneath Peckham Rye Station and the Appetite Food Festival came to Nunhead

for the first time. And now, well into 2014, the momentum doesn’t seem to have slowed. La Cave de Bruno on Lordship Lane opened with a flourish at the end of January. If you haven’t yet, head down to sample some of the finest French wines in London. There’s also Ganapati Takeaway Kitchen on Maxted Road in Peckham, which will be delivering, all over South East London, the South Indian classics that the main Ganapati outpost has become known for. Antenna’s American Diner on Westow Hill in Crystal Palace opened mid-February serving pancakes, waffles, burgers and a whole host of other good (but naughty) USA-inspired treats and last but not least, Cooper’s Bakehouse will be opening its first bakery in Brockley and extending it’s bicycle delivery service.

METHOD (Oven: 140°C / 280°F / Gas mark 1, pre-heated; Fan Oven: 120°C) 1 Heat half the oil in the casserole over a medium heat. Add the pancetta with the shallots and fry for 1 minute, stirring occasionally. Remove with a slotted spoon, draining well.

1 Add the remaining oil and the chicken thighs and brown evenly.

1 Return the pancetta with the shallots to the casserole, add the fresh herbs and all but 2 tablespoons of the Marsala wine. Season with a little salt and pepper, place the lid on and cook in the oven for 2 hours.

1 Blend together the mascarpone cheese, cornflour and the rest of the Marsala wine. Remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the grapes with the mascarpone mixture. Return to the oven for 25-30 minutes.

NEW WORLD As a British colony, Hong Kong was an enduring reminder of former empiric grandeur. Yet today is a very different story.

20 years since her last visit, Broadcaster Sue Lawley returns to discover a city charging headlong into the future…

H

ong Kong has no room for the past.

Its history lies buried beneath the crowd of skyscrapers that smother every inch of its surface, a constantly replenished jungle of stone, steel and glass. For a hundred and fifty years Hong Kong was a British colony. Extracted from the mainland of imperial China at the end of the Opium Wars in 1842, it survived invasion and occupation by the Japanese in the Second World War and the upheavals of the Chinese Communist Revolution until we returned it to China in 1997. A stroll round Hong Kong today, however, reveals none of this. Only the Peak Tram, a dainty piece of Victorian engineering that trundles tourists by the wagonload from the centre of the city to its highest point, reminds you of its colonial past.

I hadn’t visited Hong Kong for more than twenty years – long before the handover to China. It may now be part of the People’s Republic of China but it has special status: it is

still run on a capitalist system. And it’s growing at a colossal rate. However, residents can’t be certain what the future holds. ‘We have to be patient,’ I was told by a district judge. ‘We don’t know what will happen – but if you go to cities such as Shanghai, they are every bit as commercial as here.

They don’t seem ‘communist’ at all.’

Other residents are more sceptical. A distinguished British-born Chinese man told me that the unseen but controlling hand of the People’s Republic now infected all the major decisions about the government of Hong Kong.

Armed with these political thoughts, I set out to explore the world’s most vertical city. In the best areas, land is at a premium – apartments sell for about £3,000 per square foot, as much, if not more, than the swishest Knightsbridge properties – but beyond the city lie miles of untouched countryside, too steep and unforgiving to be developed. I was taken by boat around some of the hundreds of uninhabited islands and their beautiful beaches off the coast of the New Territories and shown nature trails that lead through miles of forest.

Hiking, sailing and golf are now important Hong Kong activities: an essential escape from the suffocating crowds at its heart.

My own escape from the bustle lay in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the first luxury hotel to be opened in Hong Kong, which is this year celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.

Here you can imagine what life in colonial days might have been like.

The place is immaculate: you feel like the governor (or the governor’s wife) as soon as you walk in. Doors are opened, lifts summoned, bags carried and tables booked by an army of staff, each one of whom treats you as if you were the only person who mattered.

It’s very addictive. The only thing that’s changed about this hotel is its location. It’s still in the same spot – but whereas it once stood almost on the waterfront near where the Star Ferry crosses from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon, it’s now five hundred yards back from the water. Land has been reclaimed from the harbour to allow more building. That’s Hong Kong for you. Although none of this appears to have affected the hotel’s views, and its restaurants, bars

travel

and rooms still offer a magnificent panorama of Victoria Harbour – one of the great maritime sights of the world. The Mandarin Oriental is still the epitome of Asian luxury.

Such service does not come cheap, of course, but if you want a refuge from the enervating world of Hong Kong, it’s the place to be.

Since passing into Chinese hands, Hong Kong’s entrepreneurial activity has only increased. But something else seems to be happening too. The city has a more international feel – perhaps the result of the flood of Chinese who now visit from across the border. Kowloon, the home of Chinese night markets and tailors’ shops, is now also full of global shopping brands which jostle for space between the myriad of stalls and shops selling goods from all over the world. On Hong Kong Island, a stroll along Hollywood Road – on what are called the Mid-Levels – reveals an endless parade of trendy art galleries and designer boutiques.

In the old days you would never have thought of Hong Kong as an ‘arty’ place. That’s all changing now. But the essence of Hong Kong remains: its flood of trade is like the estuary of

a great river fed by tributaries from many different places.

This new dynamism affects two of the things for which Hong Kong has always been famous – food and architecture. You can still eat a sumptuous meal at any one of the hundreds of local restaurants, often choosing your seafood from a tank in the window (hairy crab, abalone (sea snails) and squid), but in recent years the international march of the foodie army has arrived on Hong Kong’s shores, sprinkling its stars and its little red forks on restaurants of all descriptions. Eating in Hong Kong has always been an adventure into a culinary jungle, but these days they give you a map. Making a decision about where to eat proved one of the most taxing parts of my visit.

And the buildings just get taller.

The new International Commerce Centre which stands at the western end of Victoria Harbour is – at over 1,500 feet – now the tallest building in the city. They wanted to make it even taller, but that would have meant it was higher than Hong Kong’s highest natural point, The Peak, so the building was scaled back.

Nevertheless, it’s a towering reminder of the energy and power that Asia, and particularly China, is now unleashing.

Under the Basic Law that was enacted as part of the handover to China, English remains, with Chinese, one of the city’s two official languages – a status it will retain for the next thirty-four years at least. But language is just about the only element of Hong Kong’s colonial past that’s still in existence. Everything else has gone, obliterated by the city’s relentless march into the future, a metropolis stretching ever upwards in its search for commercial heaven. It is a twentyfirst century phenomenon: a place where the world is changing fast. It’s this that makes Hong Kong a place that has to be seen.

THE PENSION REVOLUTION HAS STARTED…

A

major change to how we save for retirement is happening.

To encourage more people to save for their retirement all employers will have to enrol their workers into a workplace pension scheme if they’re not already in one. This initiative is being phased in with larger employers having done this first in 2012 and 2013 and with other employers having to following suit over the next 3 years.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR EMPLOYERS?

A

ll businesses will have to assess their workforce to see which of their employees are ‘eligible employees’.

They then have to either set up

a Workplace Pension Scheme or check to see if their existing scheme meets the laid down requirements.

On a pre–determined date ( ‘the staging date’) they then have to enrol the eligible employees into the Workplace Pension Scheme and make a contribution to their pension plans: 1% of salary initially, rising to 3% over the next 3 years. Employers also have to communicate with employees, advising them of this auto enrolment and keep detailed records going forward.

The impact on employers is not only a financial one (employee costs are increased by 3% pa), the scheme also puts a significant administrative responsibility on businesses. Failure to successfully meet the requirements at the staging date can result in significant fines being levied!

ou will be advised by your employer if you are to be auto-enrolled. Once this has happened, you will also have to pay a 1% pension contribution, rising to 4%, over the following 3 years. You will however be given a 30 day period if you wish to opt out of the scheme and have your contribution refunded. Those opting out will have to be auto-enrolled again 3 years later, with a further option to opt out if required.

Employee contributions will be deducted from salary and paid into the Workplace Pension Scheme together with the employer contribution and a 1% contribution in the form of tax relief, from the Government.

Contributions will be invested via the Pension Scheme in order to provide the opportunity for the pension contributions to grow. In this way an employee builds up a pension pot with which to provide a retirement income in addition to the State Pension.

The idea behind the introduction of Workplace Pension Schemes is simple, that is to get more people saving for their retirements, but the implementation process for employers is complex, onerous and potentially costly. From an employee perspective, the decision to remain auto-enrolled or to opt out may not be as straight forward as they think and they will need to give consideration to their anticipated retirement age, affordability and amount already saved in existing pension arrangements.

At the age of 18 photographer, Imogen Davis has already had her first solo exhibition. Here the ex-Sydenham School pupil and East Dulwich local tells Absolutely about her aspirations and inspirations.

Absolutely: How old were you when you first developed an interest in photography?

And what was it that got you interested in the first place?

Imogen Davis: I’ve been interested from a young age mainly because my grandpa is a professional photographer so ever since I can remember, has had his camera out, taking photographs.

What has been your proudest moment so far?

ID: I think having everyone at my private view, supporting me. It meant a lot that people believed in me enough to come down. Also when people that I don’t know love and purchase my work it feels really special.

AB: You’ve previously said that you’ve been inspired by the work of Ansel Adams. What is it that you love about his photographs?

ID: I love Ansel Adams because of the beautiful way he portrays nature, I find his images stunning and it just

amazes me how beautiful the world can be. He just seems to capture the world in an incredibly moving way.

AB: How do you come up with new ideas?

ID: I take photographs for a brief or something that inspires me but I don’t think that the work really comes together until I have become completely stuck and stop taking photographs, evaluate and read around my subject area. I feel that annotating my work really helps me to understand what is working and what I need to improve and develop on. I also take photographs of everything and anything to see if I become inspired by a certain aspect and then work from there.

AB: What or who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

ID: I don’t really feel that I have a

ID: I love working in the darkroom, it feels so magical watching the image appear before your eyes but I am not very good at it and the pictures hardly ever come out how I want them too! I am too much of a perfectionist to be able to use a film camera all the time, I would have no time for anything else! With digital I have way more control over what I can produce, I like being able to take a photograph and know that I am going to end up with what I want.

AB: What do you think is next for you as a photographer?

ID: I’ve applied to university to do photography so hopefully I’ll get in! I want to continue taking photographs and experimenting with different techniques.

BY ANY MEANS… A recent survey has revealed the lengths some professional parents will go to to get their children into the school of their choice. Amanda Constance investigates ILLUSTRATION BY PHIL COUZENS

M

eet Martha. She’s busy organizing Sunday school for her local church, where she’s a ‘key helper’. Then she’s got to get Alfie to his Mandarin lesson, while her other son, Arthur, has his weekly jiu-jitsu class after that. James, her other half, is busy at home cooking meals for the homeless – more church points in the bag, thanks very much. Life’s tricky at the moment. They are desperately trying to buy a house in the catchment area for St Mungo’s but property is just so expensive; it’s all sealed bids, even for derelict houses, or so it seems to her. Then again, they’re using her mum’s home address as back-up, so they should be OK. Martha was educated privately, of course, as was James, but there’s no money in publishing these days, is there? Really, it’s enough to make you move to Kent…

Martha is fictitious but hers is a familiar story for any professional London parent. Indeed, a recent report from education charity The Sutton Trust has revealed just how far some wealthier parents will go to get their children into the most sought-after state schools.

The survey, entitled ‘Parent Power?’, focuses on the upper-middle classes. It reveals that a third of professional parents sought out a good school when moving house, with 18% choosing the catchment area of a specific school. This is hardly news for any Londoner, where catchment boundaries are poured over, Zoopla is updated by the minute, and aggressive gazumping near good schools is the norm. I know of one family who rented opposite the school gates of a desirable North London primary (at great cost) because the catchment area had shrunk to a radius of just 300 metres. Another family, in Camden, rented an additional property on their own street to get into a catchment area, moving back into their own home when their child had secured a place.

The research, led by academics at King’s College London and London Metropolitan University, and based on interviews with 1,173 parents across England with schoolage children, lays bare some of the more underhand tactics the sharp-elbowed set will use to cheat the system. An astonishing 5% of upper-middle class parents admitted

to buying a second home, then using that address to gain access to a specific school, while 6% of professionals illegally used a relative’s address for the same purpose. One in ten confessed to feigning religious beliefs to get into a desirable church school. And nearly one in five wealthier families employed a private tutor specifically to prepare their child for a school entrance exam – almost four times the rate of other parents.

While there’s no denying that some of these methods are extremely pushy at best or plain immoral at worst, is it really so bad to do the very best for your child? David Cameron has, after all, pointedly refused to denounce pushy parents but then, he’s in no position to; his kids are at St Mary’s Abbots in Kensington, the Holy Grail of church primary schools for many professional London parents.

The Sutton Trust report’s authors, however, are less equable. One of them, Professor Becky Francis, says: ‘Our research shows just how far equality of opportunity is being undermined by the greater purchasing power of some parents. The ability for some parents but not others to use financial resources to secure their children’s achievement poses real impediments for social mobility.’

The report recommends the expansion of lottery-style entry rules to break the middle-class stranglehold on places, as well as monitoring the social background of pupils to help create a more balanced intake. It also advocates means-tested vouchers to enable poorer families to pay for extra-curricular activities.

None of which would be popular with the overstretched professionals who often go to legitimate, if extreme, lengths to make sure their children get into good schools. As Nick Faith, from the Policy Exchange think tank, says: ‘It’s not right to stigmatise parents for trying to do the best by their children. Instead of making scapegoats of people who are simply attempting to improve the life chances of their kids, the focus should be on driving up the quality of teaching in the poorest areas.’ The Marthas of this world would surely agree with that.

After almost 50 years of single-sex education, Cranmore School has announced that it will expand to educate girls up to the age of seven from September 2014. Having received an ‘outstanding’ rating in the latest inspection, the school’s headmaster Michael Connolly comments, ‘The introduction of co-education in our nursery has been a tremendous success and there has been considerable demand for us to extend this so that girls can benefit from the exceptional opportunities which are currently enjoyed by the boys.’

When I sell my property will I have to pay tax?

You will only pay tax on the sale of property that has not been your home.

How much could my tax liability be?

A gain for tax purposes is the increase in value between buying your house and selling it. This taxable gain can be reduced by costs of purchase, of sale and improvement to the property. Any losses you have made previously, and your annual allowance, currently £10,900, could further reduce the taxable gain. Most of the gain would probably be taxed at 28%.

How is my tax reduced if the property used to be my home?

The proportion of gain during which a property was your Principal Private Residence (PPR) will be exempt from tax.

You will be treated for tax purposes as living in the property during certain periods of absence, such as when required to temporarily relocate for work. However, you can only have one PPR at any time.

For a final period, you are deemed to live in a property, even if you actually lived elsewhere, and did not return to live in it. For properties exchanged before 6 April 2014 the final period is 36 months, however it then reduces to 18 months. If you let a property that was once your home any gain is further reduced by up to £40,000, per owner.

Would I save tax owning a property through a company?

There is rarely any tax benefit to owning a property in a company. Any gains are subject to corporation tax, and when taking gains out of the company, further tax liability is likely to arise on dividends. A company is not eligible for PPR relief or an annual exemption.

Should I transfer the property into joint names with my husband or wife before selling it?

An acquiring spouse ‘inherits’ the actual and deemed periods of occupation of the transferring spouse. Transferring a property can, therefore, save a couple tax.

However, a person, or a married couple, can only have one PPR at any time. Therefore, if the transferee spouse was previously a homeowner, the transfer could create a significant tax liability. Transfers between spouses are exempt from capital gains tax.

I had two homes, what happens if I sell one of them.

The fortunate few who have two homes at the same time could benefit by nominating one of the properties as a PPR.

How is my tax position affected if the property market does not increase?

If price stagnate, the effectiveness of PPR will diminish. If you sell your home for less than you bought it for, the loss cannot be used to reduce any taxable gains you make in the future.

GRAND OPENING Parents, pupils and friends of Heber Primary School in East Dulwich all pulled together to raise cash when the school decided to refurbish the old Victorian caretakers cottage on the school grounds. orest Hill has been performing incredibly well these past few months.

With many buyers taking the leap and moving further afield, our buyer registration levels have increased by 92% year on year. In the last year, we’ve seen a huge rise in buyers moving from North and East London down to Forest Hill and surrounding areas, and the number of buyers moving from Hackney to Forest Hill has risen by 25% year on year. With a wide variety of property types available as well as prices, buyers feel they can get a lot more for their money in SE23. For example, in central London where a two bedroom flat can often cost upwards of £550,000 to £600,000, however in Forest Hill, you can buy a four bedroom family house with a garden for the same price.

I

thought I was going to be a professional golfer!

Well, that was the plan, and for a little while, the reality, as I worked on getting my handicap down to +1. But after a year, I realised that only a handful of golfers get to be Tiger Woods and I wasn’t anywhere close to making a living, let alone a million! So the family business, a children’s fashion retailer, beckoned whilst I decided what I really wanted to do with my career.

I’ve always been interested in property and finance and back in 2002, both were booming, so I set up my own financial services company. I saw mortgages and related insurances as a solid industry; something that would always be required and whose values would increase with property prices. All in all, a good, sound, long term prospect. What could possibly go wrong?!? But then 2007 came along, and ironically, just as I returned from a free holiday in Spain, having been rewarded as one of the Lenders’ top performing mortgage brokers, the bottom quite literally fell out of the world. We all felt it – the bitter bite of recession, far deeper and enduring than anyone could possibly have predicted or imagined. It was time to batten down the hatches and regroup. Was it worth battling on in an attempt to find a way through the debris, or time to move on?

The question I kept being asked by friends and family was, ‘Why don’t you think about selling property?’ They were convinced it was a career that I would excel at. But who would be taking on new sales staff in such a difficult economic environment? It didn’t take me long to find out.

At a time when other estate agencies were folding, amid cries of ‘nobody’s buying or selling’, The Acorn Group was actually expanding. It was their belief that in the eye of the storm, positivity was the only form of attack. They took on more staff, opened more offices and invested money and time into making sure they were the ‘Go To’ agent. Yet despite being a large South East London chain, they never lost their ‘family feel’, and had an impressive reputation for long term

staff retention. And it was this, along with the possibility of further career opportunities, which made the decision to join them a very easy one.

I started working in Bromley, for the Langford Russell division of the company before moving across to Dulwich, as a Branch Manager. Having been born and bred in South East London, I have long been familiar with the Dulwich area. I love the variety of independent retailers in Lordship Lane and North Cross Road with the hustle and bustle of the Saturday market. The team and I often enjoy a drink and a bite to eat in the large selection of bars and restaurants which front Lordship Lane.

Dulwich has it all; a great local community which supports the local businesses, fantastic schools, beautiful parks and in the last few years, excellent transport links due to the introduction of the nearby East London Line overground service. We have an active involvement with Goodrich School, where we have sponsored the summer and winter fairs, as well as helping out with their charity fun run last June. We also know and socialise with a lot of the other independent retailers along Lordship Lane who have made my team and I really feel part of the Dulwich community. Nothing is more satisfying than when we hand keys over on the day of completion. For the vast majority of our clients, moving house is one of the most important events in their family life, so to be a part of this process is without doubt the most rewarding part of a career in Estate Agency. My team and I receive regular letters and notes of thanks from vendors and purchasers alike, so hopefully we are providing the right kind of service.
