So deeply engrained in the psyche is the wax and wane of the school year that it seems even those of us who don’t have children can’t help but become caught up in September’s spirit of newness. It helps, of course, that it’s all change in the shops. As the Dulwich Picture Gallery’s much lauded summer exhibition comes to a close, David Boyd Haycock – the show’s curator – tells Absolutely about what, at 17, inspired his passion for the period.

must have been 17 when I first saw Paul Nash’s iconic painting, We Are Making a New World. My recollection is that it was at the Tate, though the painting belongs to the Imperial War Museum. Sadly, they declined to lend it to my A Crisis of Brilliance exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery –they are revamping in advance of next year’s centenary of the Great War. Nevertheless it was that painting of ravaged trees before a blood-red sunrise that first sparked my interest in early twentieth century British art; I would go on to write my

MA dissertation on Paul Nash and the British Surrealist movement. Later, whilst writing a short biography of Nash (published in 2002) I kept encountering the Slade picnic photo from the summer of 1912. There among the young men and women enjoying a day out with their tutors were Stanley Spencer, Mark Gertler, Dora Carrington, C.R.W. Nevinson, David Bomberg. Edward Wadsworth (or is it William Roberts?) and Isaac Rosenberg. And I thought, ‘what an incredible time to have been an art student!

That’s a story worth telling.’ So I started writing a book about them. In many ways it was as much about the people as the paintings and drawings – the processes of learning, of discovering, of growing up. That I also happened to love their art was a bonus. he thing is, to outsiders, South London is like a boyfriend with a (wholly undeserved) bad reputation. When North Londoners bravely (their word) cross the river to visit me, it usually goes something like this: first they get huffy at just the idea of venturing south (“but you live so far away – you’re practically in the country”), then they pretend they don’t know how to use the Overground trains (“will my Oyster card work?”), and finally the inevitable pleasant surprise when they arrive because yes, it really does only take 12 minutes from London Bridge (said by everyone in East Dulwich, all of the time). A friend who came to my place for a BBQ this weekend suggested that my obsession with East Dulwich may have spiraled out of control. “It’s just a place,” he said to me as he stood in my garden and watched the parakeets in the trees. “It’s just like anywhere else in London.” I handed him a blackened sausage and then noticed several neighbours peering out of their open windows at him in shock. And that’s when it hit me – the best thing about East Dulwich isn’t our location or our shops, it’s our people; it’s our sense of community. Dulwich is like no other place because, collectively, we’re fiercely proud of where we live. And if I get the shakes when I leave SE22, I can take comfort in the knowledge that I am not alone in my addiction. Ilana Fox is a writer. T

here’s something a little strange about our part of London. It seems to be more than just a place where people live. It is a place that people are enthralled by, obsessed with even. Talking about where they’re from with a proper, dyed-in-the-wool, South East Londoner can be an unnerving experience: expressions become fevered, words impassioned, gazes earnest and unwavering. It elicits a fierce loyalty from its residents. ‘It is a little like that isn’t it?’ laughs Florence Welch, lead singer of Florence and the Machine (and South East Londoner). ‘But this place is just such a cauldron of creativity and passion and inspiration, I’ve admired and adored [it] from a very young age.’ See? Raised in Camberwell (climbing trees in Myatt’s Fields Park is one of her earliest memories), schooled at Alleyn’s and an alumnus of the Arts College, the 26-year-old and her band have, since the 2008 release of debut single Kiss With A Fist, been nominated and won countless awards (BRITs, Grammys, the Mercury Prize), had two number 1 albums (Lungs and Ceremonials) and toured the world. And yet, Florence’s love of South East London has remained such that despite the international success and despite the constant murmurings in the press of an imminent move to the States, earlier this year she bought her first home ten minutes down the road from her mum’s house – in Camberwell. ‘I have a great relationship with my mother and such a great love for the cultural elements of South London, so it’s been really easy to stay.’ ‘Growing up here had a huge influence [on me], particularly on the artistic side of things. Before my music really got ‘out there’ Camberwell was a true source of inspiration and energy. There are so many likeminded people around here and such individualism too – the local groups, the arts schools, the theatre. Now coming back to it represents sanity from the rest of the world, so it has changed in terms of what it means to me, but it’s just as important as ever before…here, genuine creative talent doesn’t have to come packaged in the way it perhaps does in some other areas of the capital.’ Then, of course, there’s the nightlife, which must be pretty important for an

And perhaps that’s what this year, in which she’s taking a break from touring, will be all about: catching up on the stuff that you do in your twenties, stuff you might have missed if you were busy being megawatt famous, stuff like decorating. ‘It’s so nice to put a real fingerprint on a room or a corner or a wall. It’s another form of creative expression, I guess.’ The house is Georgian and a quirky mix of jewel colours, antiques and crooked doorframes. It is beautiful and opulent, with just a dash of the theatrical; it is just the place you would expect Florence Welch to live. As well as settling in, this year has been about creating a balance in life. ‘I want to continue to be successful, but more than that I want to continue to be happy. I don’t know what’s around the corner and I don’t want to know. I just want to enjoy the next step. I have life goals and ambitions, but most of those are based around ensuring I am a better person, a stronger person, and fairer to myself.’ Which is perhaps easier said than done for an artist who credits ‘disappointment’ as a huge source of musical inspiration. ‘I know that sounds strange, but it’s much easier to write music about something that has affected you negatively rather than something that has affected you positively. All of the classic songwriters write from the heart. It’s a strange juxtaposition to what we would suppose we required from music – something uplifting. But I think music is uplifting for its empathetic edge. If you’re down about something and you hear someone else expressing similar disappointment or upset, it makes you feel better. I like that – it’s a very interesting concept, and I think a lot of lyrical structure is built around the knowledge that people need to relate to and feed off words to truly appreciate them.’ It is difficult not to slip into well-worn clichés when describing Florence, her wonky fashion sense and tumbling red hair have been commented upon just as widely as her talent and success. Just as difficult to stave off is speaking in raptures about her: she is, after all, quite a force, a whirlwind of creativity and a true artist (the things that make her happiest? ‘Art, paintings, scrapbooks and clothes! And music, of course.’) So, to save rehashing old ground, I’ll just say this – she’s the archetypal South East Londoner: fiercely loyal, totally passionate and perhaps just a little bit mad.

There used to be a major Camberwell Arts College party scene. People would come from all around and occupy abandoned buildings. There was nothing intrusive or sinister about it – it was just people using space for expression and enjoyment. I used to love those events, but it’s a bit more difficult to be a part of them now!’ And yet, despite that difficulty, she wouldn’t leave her childhood home behind. ‘I think when you have so much other stuff going on around you, in your life, you need a few constants, and having a real home to return to means a lot to me. It was definitely time that I moved out, though. I’ve got friends my age who’ve been living by themselves for a decade now; evidently I have a bit of catching up to do!’

Eleanor Catton, who’s second novel The Luminaries has been longlisted for 2013’s Man Booker Prize, talks to Absolutely ahead of her September visit to Dulwich Books PHOTOGRAPH: ROBERT CATTO

You were cooking when you received the call letting you know The Luminaries had made the Man Booker Prize longlist; how did dinner turn out and what has it been like since the news broke? Has everything changed as Max Porter predicted? Dinner was revolting. I was making fishcakes, and I'd just put them into the oil when the phone rang. I watched, beaming, as the oil burned and started to smoke, and didn't fl ip them until about five minutes after I should have! The official announcement was made at 11pm New Zealand time, so I stayed up late to watch the news break on Twitter, and by the time I woke up the next morning it seemed that all of New Zealand had found out. One of the very nice things about coming from a small country is that everyone feels international attention in a very personal way. The outpouring of good wishes and excitement from fellow Kiwis has been just lovely. I feel like an athlete, carrying a flag.

There are elements of the traditional 19th century sensation novels in The Luminaries. What - and non-fiction did you read when researching the book? And in what ways did these books help or hinder you during the writing process? The Woman in White, The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment, Moby Dick, Middlemarch, The Portrait of a Lady, and Anna Karenina were hugely influential, some for reasons of character, some for reasons of plot, and some for reasons of style. My non-fiction research was a little more scattered. I read a few books on New Zealand history, and West Coast history in particular, but by far the most helpful non-fictional resource was the National Library of New Zealand’s newspaper archives. I was able to see how much everything cost, what kinds of foods and wares were available to buy and sell, what entertainments were on offer and, most importantly for The Luminaries, I was able to read transcripts of actual court trials from the period. The transcripts are extraordinarily vivid in their detail: I recall one of a man sentenced to death by hanging, shouting from the dock, ‘I have in me three hearts and my father knows it.’ That line gives me chills.

ARTS & CULTURE the spirit of the whole. Dialogue helps to keep me honest, and to prevent my writing from becoming self-serving or cowardly. It’s also good for me to get feedback throughout the process, some of which can be very hard to hear. Steve (my partner) and I had a terrible fight about the death of one of the characters in The Luminaries: he was made very angry by the casual way that I’d treated this character, and how callously the death had come about. He was absolutely right—I ended up rewriting the scene—but it took a heated argument for me to understand the scene in the way that he, as a reader, was experiencing it. The Luminaries is very different from your fi rst novel, The Rehearsal, in terms of being fi rmly set in a different time period and in New Zealand. Did you feel as though you wanted to represent New Zealand in your next novel? And why did you specifically choose a New Zealand of a previous era? The Luminaries isn’t a representative history by any means: in fact I’ve played very fast and loose with history, altering dates and figures where it suited me to do so. The only event in the novel that is (loosely) based on fact is the construction of the Hokitika Gaol at Seaview, which began in the early months of 1866. The prison was built using convict labour—that is, by the very people who would later be incarcerated there—and this idea chimed so nearly with astrological ideas of fate, self-knowledge, and self-creation, that I knew I wanted to use it.

How would you describe the writing process? And how did writing The Luminaries differ from writing The Rehearsal? It’s difficult to compare the two projects. I wrote The Rehearsal as a Masters thesis, so I had a cohort of writers around me, a supervisor, regular workshops, a deadline. None of that was true for The Luminaries except for the [delivery] deadline, which I overran by about two years! Both novels found their genesis in an ideological fascination. For The Rehearsal it was feminist performance theory; for The Luminaries it was Martin Buber’s marvellous I and Thou, and the collected works of Carl Jung, which in turn led me to ideas of archetype and astrological patterning. Once gripped by an idea, I follow it from book to book, taking notes and transcribing everything that seems useful or interesting. It’s only after I have a good sense of the ideas and values that I want to explore—after I know what questions I want to ask—that I can begin writing. It’s vital for me to read my work out loud, and to talk about the novel as it changes and evolves. I’m extraordinarily fortunate in having a partner who’s willing to listen to my work, to argue with it, and to let me know when some aspect of what I’ve written strikes an off-note or undermines

The Luminaries is concerned with fortune in both senses of the word – the beginning of the gold rush in 19th century New Zealand and the Victorians’ fascination with the occult, séances and mesmerism. How do you use these juxtaposing fortunes to explore the concept of free will and determinism? So many kinds of occult practice attempt to oppose or manipulate free will, which has always seemed very transparent and very silly to me. I would not trust a person who professed to be an agent or interpreter of fate. But I think that the quest for meaning should be taken seriously, as a vital and enriching aspect of being human and alive, and for that reason I wouldn’t want to dismiss any system or ritual of meaning-making too hastily. As a novelist, I’m looking at these practices and ideas with a view to what would make a good story or a good surprise. In general, though, I would say that I’m more interested in known unknowns than in unknown knowns. What do you plan to do next? I’ve just taken up a part-time teaching job at Manukau Institute of Technology in South Auckland, so that takes up a lot of my thinking these days. I love teaching, both for the interactions with students and for the way that it helps to clarify and shape my own ideas about fiction and what it means. There are a few ideas rattling around in my head, some fictional, some non-fictional, but nothing’s really taken hold of me yet. I’m happy to wait. What do you hope people will take away with them after reading The Luminaries? I hope that people will find characters to love. I believe that falling in love with a fictional person is one of the greatest pleasures that exists. It can be even more intense, more personal, and more revealing, than falling in love with someone real.

IN HOLLYWOOD’S HEYDAY it wasn’t unusual for stars to be synonymous with one particular scent. Gloria Swanson scented the set of Sunset Boulevard with Caron’s Narcisse Noir, Cary Grant spritzed Eight & Bob and Grace Kelly famously walked down the aisle — a walk that was to make her Princess of Monaco — wearing a perfume created to replicate the aroma of her wedding bouquet: Fleurissimo by Creed3. But that was then. Too often people focus on trying to find that single signature scent. My best advice? Spare yourself the struggle and start your own ‘fragrance wardrobe’. In the same way that your weekday suit should be different to the red-carpet-worthy gown you might throw on for an evening out, no one perfume should be expected to fit every occasion. For day try something light, fresh and zingy. Carthusia’s Mediterraneo4 is a chic and sparkling number from Capri with crushed lemon leaves and green tea. Or Caldey Island Lavender Water made by Cistercian monks of coastal Wales is a cool and sophisticated minty

lavender. Tuberose is a night-blooming plant said to drive men wild with desire and thus traditionally harvested only by married women in India. Mona di Orio’s incandescent Tubereuse1 teamed with an LBD is bound to turn heads. There are no hard and fast rules when choosing a fragrance,

but it is wise to remember the perfume mantra: mood, occasion and season. It is also important to remember that everyone’s skin is different and an individual’s chemical make-up will react in a unique way to every perfume, so while you may love a fragrance you should also make sure that it loves you back. In the end, let the people around you be a guide – when friends, waitresses, people in the supermarket queue stop you to ask what perfume you’re wearing, you can rest assured that you have found a partnership that will last. And when the window of a taxi rolls down and the driver enquires then, trust me, you've found your perfect match.

2 10x20cm puff pastry rectangles 1 egg, beaten 2 tbsp green pesto 30g shaved ParmigianoReggiano cheese, plus extra to serve 4 tbsp mascarpone cheese 6 asparagus spears Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 2tbsp grated ParmgianoReggiano cheese Torn basil leaves Salt and black pepper 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C 2. Place the pastry rectangles on a greased baking sheet and carefully score lines 1cm away from the pastry edges with a sharp knife. Prick the inner rectangle with a fork and brush with beaten egg 3. Spread a thin layer of pesto all over the base of the inner rectangle and top with shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and small spoonfuls of mascarpone cheese 4. Blanche the asparagus spears for 1min in boiling salted water, drain, and place 3 spears across each tart 5. Sprinkle a little lemon zest and grated ParmigianoReggiano over each. 6. Bake in the oven for 1520 mins until the pastry is golden brown and risen 7. Serve with shaved Parmgiano-Reggiano and freshly torn basil leaves

People seem to think that if you go for the reddest steak, that’ll be the best, but that’s not necessarily true. The best tasting steaks are often darker in colour because they’ve been matured. A good steak should also have a bit of marbling in it, the fat means it’ll cook better.

‘TIS THE SEASON…

By September the Game Season is in full flow and it’s a great time to try wild birds. Pigeon, and partridge will be available (also grouse, from the 12th August). Look out for pheasant in October.

DON’T BE BOARING…

Be adventurous! Wild boar and venison are great, or from a little further afield, kangaroo and ostrich. Wild boar is similar to pork, just a little stronger in taste and a lot leaner. You can cut it into steaks and fry it or you can roast the joints, it’s a versatile meat. Ox cheek is a nice cut that not many

people have tried. Braise it down and it’s very tender.

GOOD TO KNOW…

Don’t leave chicken and pork in the fridge, eat it within two days. The fridges at a butcher’s are totally different from a home fridge, which is forever being opened and closed and as a result never regulates to the same temperature. Trust me it’s much better fresh! If you need to leave it for longer than two days, it’s best that you freeze it. Lamb and beef you can leave for three to four days, in fact, the longer you leave your beef the better it is. Alexandra Jones bids farewell to summer with a star-lit dinner by the pool

’ve never heard a bad word said about the Lido Café’ came a vaguely threatening message from a friend – a Herne Hill local – when I told him that I might do a review. My interest was obviously piqued. When I arrived for dinner on a warm late-August evening the swimmers were just coming in from the pool and there was a pleasantly languid atmosphere: mums and dads in flip-flops holding up over-tired children, slightly sozzled groups in slacks talking in low voices on the terrace, all punctuated by the odd peel of laughter from a birthday table. The vaguely industrial feel of the café, all sparse concrete floor, was warmed by the twinkling lights reflecting off the pool, it was, simply put, quite lovely. To start I had the whole globe artichoke with Dijon vinaigrette. Once I’d cracked into it (full disclosure: I was vaguely

intimated when it was put in front of me, a whole artichoke is a formidable looking thing though it turned out to be easy enough to peel) the heart was soft and delicate and the vinaigrette tart and punchy without being overpowering. It was a light but satisfying starter. The mains were a little delayed and you get the sense that it’s a place not quite ready for it’s own popularity (we were warned as we sat down, for example, that they were almost out of steak, it was only 7:30pm). The quietly attentive service and reasonably priced bottle of French Sauvignon Blanc (£19.50) more than made up for the extra 10 minutes wait. When it did come the grilled harrisa mackerel (served with crushed jersey royals, samphire and radish salad) was perfectly cooked. The sweet and tangy radish salad cut through the warm earthy mackerel and

made a wonderfully crunchy accompaniment to the softer ingredients. My friend had the free-range chicken leg with sumac, za’atar, lemon, pine nuts, ptitim and chargrilled little gems (read: middle eastern spiced chicken with giant cous cous) which was bold and comforting. The chicken, moist and succulent with a crispy skin, was begging to be picked up and eaten, straight off the bone, which my friend did with great pleasure, leaving behind an almost clean, slightly gnawed, chicken bone. For desert the vanilla roast peach with maple syrup and mascarpone was hot and sweet. The peach melted with the mascarpone and muddled in the mouth making a desert that was creamy, light and incredibly moreish. I fired off a reply to my friend’s text as we were leaving ‘…and you won’t be hearing any from me.’ A delightful dinner!

eviche has had a soft spot in my heart since I first tried it – aged 20 – at the Villa María del Triunfo fish market in Lima. The zingy, sour juice and incomparably fresh, soft seafood will forever be stamped on my memory as the epitome of a great fish dish – light, tasty, bold. It was probably a little unfair, then, for me to go for the ceviche to start my meal at The Crystal Palace Market (could it ever really compare? So far from the sea, so far from the dish’s birthplace?) And in truth it was test of sorts, I’d been promised great things of the place, I’d been bludgeoned with praise from friends who live in the area (‘no, you really really must go, you must’) and so I set the chefs a sneaky test that they, I thought, might just scrape a pass in… My friend chose the artichoke with buffalo mozzarella and

pesto sauce (she called it a ‘safe’ option, and indeed it was reassuringly unctuous, with creamy mozzarella and an earthy grilled artichoke heart). The service was speedy and heartfelt – that is to say, the waiters knew their stuff, about the food as well as the drinks and were quick with recommendations which turned out to be pretty spot-on (I asked, vaguely, for a glass of white wine and was brought my very favourite one, a white rioja in case you’re curious, which was novel). It was a delight to sit across from the kitchen and watch the chefs at work, if a seat facing that way is available be sure to snap it up, though it might make you an inattentive dinner companion. Our mains – I went for scallops which were served with a generous portion of crispy fries, salad and a house sauce – were well presented. Of course scallops are tricky, being

so easily over-done, but these were almost uniformly soft, warm and delicate (you know they’re good when you can slice through them as if through butter). The portions were well judged and we were left with just enough room for desert. We both somewhat unadventurously went for the caramel cheesecake which came in individual jars that we cracked open at the table. Though rich and decadent, mine had slightly less caramel that I would have liked, though there is probably a school of thought that says asking for (more) caramel on top of biscuit and cheese is just greedy (not my school of thought, evidently). And the ceviche test? Well I’ll admit, I was surprised. Fresh, light and punchy. It wasn’t quite the Villa María del Triunfo fish market but if I’d shut my eyes and concentrated really hard…

LIGHT Dulwich-based lighting designer Sharon Marston talks to Absolutely about inspiring interiors, bespoke lighting and the London Design Festival

‘I

guess I haven’t taken a very conventional route into the lighting industry,’ explains Sharon Marston from her Dulwich studio, ‘I studied jewellery design at Middlesex University in the late 80’s and it enabled me to pursue my interests in the theatre and fashion.’ From Middlesex, Marston went to work on productions with the English National Opera and Regents Park Open Air Theatre and to design and create accessories for Paul Smith, Bella Freud and Michiko Koshino, so far so fashion. ‘It was whilst photographing some of my costume designs for a contemporary dance project that I first became inspired to work with lighting. I just couldn't get the way some woven crinoline illuminated under the camera lights out of my head.’ And she hasn’t looked back since, cementing her reputation as a true interior great in 2004 when she was commissioned for 'Brilliant', one of the first contemporary lighting exhibitions to be held at the Victoria & Albert Museum. ‘Nowadays, the majority of my inspiration comes from the materials, craftsmanship and techniques of various design disciplines, including fashion and theatre. I look for the kind of fluidity of design and sculptural-drama that allow my work to be illuminated in more surprising ways.’ ‘This year I was approached by SuperBrands to create a sitespecific installation in East London’s Old Truman Brewery for its exhibition at London Design Festival. The large space that we were offered, on the first floor of the show, is very raw and industrial and a direct contrast to the delicate, decorative work that we create. The piece we’ve come up with uses over 6,000 components from the Willow design in my latest collection (right). The intricate canopy aims to reflect notions of nature and growth and has been selected specifically to provide visitors with a delicate, yet luxurious, experience as they enter the space.’

AFRICAN SKIES Jo Caird visits South Africa to investigate Johannesburg’s cultural rebirth

L

et’s not beat about the bush – Johannesburg has a bit of a reputation problem. When I told friends I was going, most made ‘are you sure it’s safe?’ faces, while the man next to me on my outbound journey intoned worrying crime statistics until the in-flight entertainment began. But while it’s undeniably the case that Joburg is more dangerous than, say, Padstow, crime rates have been falling for years now – and as long as you take sensible precautions (the kind you would take in any major city) you’ll be fine. Johannesburg’s unfortunate reputation, along with the fact that Cape Town is better known as a city destination, means that visitors to South Africa tend to pass through on their way elsewhere or skip the city altogether. It won’t be this way for long, though – Jozi is a city on the up. After checking in at the Peech Hotel, a boutique establishment with a gorgeous garden in one of Joburg’s well-to-do northern suburbs, I travel to Newtown to get my bearings on a walking tour of the cultural quarter. Joburg’s Central Business District (CBD) was a no-go area for a long time, but a decade of urban regeneration has borne fruit, bringing money back into the city centre and transforming it into a vibrant, creative place. A five-minute stroll takes you past three museums, a handful of trendy bars, a theatre and a dance venue. It’s quiet in the daytime, but when I return on Saturday night the area is buzzing. It’s after 2am when I head back to the Peech that night, but there’s no sign of the fun stopping at DJ bar Ko’spotong, and young clubbers are queuing out the door of the Bassline. When it comes to urban regeneration in the CBD, however, Braamfontein and Maboneng are the places to watch. I head to Braamfontein for its Neighbourhoods Market, a funky collection of food stalls and local clothing and jewellery designers that sets up every Saturday in a multistorey car park. I wander around sipping a glass of South African chenin blanc and nibble on samosas, grilled halloumi, bratwurst, waffles and ice cream, buying a vintage playsuit while I’m at it. There’s a market with a similar feel at Maboneng on Sundays; it’s part of Arts on Main, a recent development that includes an airy gallery space, a couple of designer shops, a terrace bar and Canteen, a very nice brasserie whose tables spill out into a courtyard filled with olive trees. My lunch is luxuriously laid-back – a holiday from my holiday – and a post-prandial perusal of Main Street reveals several more eateries that go straight on to my ‘to try’ list - as well as The Living Room, a breezy terrace bar with great views over the urban landscape.

But it’s not just the centre of Johannesburg that’s worth exploring. Not far from my hotel are two of Jozi’s most respected commercial art galleries. The Goodman and Everard Read are both open to the public and well worth a visit, whether or not you’re considering investing in the South African art market. And don’t miss Circa, the Everard Read’s newest space, an extraordinary optical illusion of a building that hosts changing exhibitions of world class contemporary art. On the day of my gallery visits, I stop for a bite of lunch at Tasha’s, a buzzy eatery in the local area with an enormous menu that includes everything from liver on toast to fish and chips. My salad Niçoise is delicious but so generously proportioned that I am unable to finish it – not the first or the last time I am defeated by a plate of food this week. Further north still is Liliesleaf, where Nelson Mandela and the other grandees of the African National Congress were arrested in 1963 for plotting the overthrow of the apartheid regime. This interactive museum, whose exhibits include audio accounts of those involved, as well as the room where Mandela lived in disguise as a

hired man prior to his arrest, is very sensitively curated and deeply moving. I visit the Apartheid Museum the next day to try to put this important episode in the country’s troubled history in its full context. The two experiences, though not exactly pleasant, are vital for anyone hoping to understand modern South Africa. Another South African essential is barbecue – called braai in Afrikaans, it’s a national passion and features on almost every menu I come across in Jo’burg. It’s a speciality at Moyo, a wonderfully quirky restaurant where a make-up artist paints delicate designs on diners’ faces as they wait for their food. My friend and I opt to share two of the braai options on offer: her boerewors – or farmers’ sausages – were rich and meaty, as different from a British sausage as you could get, while my fillet steak was one of the best I’ve ever had. Most people who come to Johannesburg also head out on safari, but for those who can’t spare the time, there are opportunities to get up close and personal with animals on a day trip from the city. At Lion Park, which is somewhere between a reserve and a zoo, I am taken on a guided drive through enclosures containing herbivores, lions, cheetahs and wild dogs. It’s not quite the savannah, but our guide is very knowledgeable and the benefit of a place like this is that you’re guaranteed animal action: out on safari proper you can go hours with only wildebeest for company. Another thrilling perk is the chance to spend time in the lion cub enclosure. I won’t soon forget the all-too-brief minutes I spent with these magnificent animals as they dozed in the shade. Not far from here is the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO site, where evidence has been found of some of the earliest human and pre-human activity. I wander, awe-struck, through the Sterkfontein Caves, gazing at ancient stalactites and stalagmites and an eerie underground lake that lies silent and still in the darkness. Back in the city the following day I take a guided cycle tour through Soweto, once one of South Africa’s most infamous townships and now essentially a suburb of Joburg. Parts of it are still very poor and there are certainly areas it would be inadvisable for tourists to visit, but much of Soweto is now comfortably middle-class and it’s fascinating to have my expectations of such a place confounded. My final evening in Joburg begins with a ‘sundowner’ cocktail at recently opened boutique hotel 54 on Bath. I’ve truly embraced South Africa’s sundowner tradition this week, sampling old school colonial style at the Polo Bar at the Westcliff Hotel and contemporary elegance at the San Deck at the Sandton Sun Hotel. All three venues have fantastic views over the city, but 54 on Bath – with its garden terrace – is my favourite. As I watch the sun set and the full moon rise over this sprawling city, it strikes just how much more of Johannesburg there is still to discover.

SHACKS Fashion Week doesn’t have to end on the runway. Georgie Lane-Godfrey picks the hottest hotels for a stylish stay this September.

BEST FOR: PUTTING YOU FASHION FOOT FORWARD HOTEL CONTINENTALE, FLORENCE ‘Feet are an important part of the body,’ said Salvatore Ferragamo. ‘They tell a story about the character of the person to which they belong.’ But then, surely a hotel does too? Florence’s Hotel Continentale is one of three boutique hotels owned by the Ferragamos, the royal family of footwear. Set in a beautiful medieval building in the historical city centre, don’t be fooled by the hotel’s charming exterior. Inside, Hotel Continentale is all slick white interiors and pared back wood – a modern take on Italian chic – with just a sprinkling of 50s style in the form of black and white photographs and hot pink chairs. Climb the hotel’s stairs and you’ll find its undisputed highlight, the La Terraza rooftop bar. Sat on top of the medieval Consorti Tower, the view from here is something of an architectural tour of Florence, encompassing Brunelleschi's dome, Giotto's bell and the Ponte Vecchio over the River Arno. It’s testament to just how well located the hotel is; the Uffizi Gallery, Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Pitti and, more importantly for fashionistas, the city's shopping district all within walking distance. A stay here will also get you free entry into the Salvatore Ferragamo museum, but the stylish staff can also arrange priority access to all of Florence’s top attractions too. A new academy in London is the first in the city to let its students start later. Amanda Constance reports on the teen sleep debate

eenagers are lazy, right? Wrong. According to a growing body of research they just have a different body clock from the rest of us and if schools would wake up to this evidence and let teens start their day later, scientists believe they would see great gains in both the health of their students and academic results. Some schools are taking note. When the UCL Academy in Swiss Cottage, north-west London, starts the new term this September, it will have been a year since it became the first London school to allow teens to ‘sleep in’. When the academy, which is sponsored by University College London, opened in September 2012, its students were allowed to start at 10am and leave at 5.30pm. Headmistress Geraldine Davies argues that the school is already seeing positive results. ‘Youngsters are turning up alert and ready to learn and are focused and engaged in lessons,’ she says. ‘We have no hard data on exam results yet… but pupil and teacher surveys have so far been positive.’ Scientists say there is now biological evidence underpinning the argument that schools should start later. It was in the US in the 1990s that researchers fi rst identified an ‘adolescent time shift’ in the sleep pattern of teenagers and in the past two decades, a number of US schools have adopted later start times.

In the UK, Professor Russell Foster, a professor of circadian neuroscience at Oxford, has been at the forefront of work on teenage sleep patterns and their effect on performance at school. He explains: ‘The biology of human sleep timing changes as we age. As puberty begins, bedtimes and waking times get later. This trend continues until 19.5 years in women and 21 in men. Then it reverses. At 55 we wake at about the time we woke prior to puberty. On average this is two hours earlier than adolescents. This means that for a teenager, a 7am alarm call is the equivalent of a 5am start for a person in their 50s.’ Prof. Foster observed a UK school in Liverpool where many students were getting just 5 hours a night; unsurprisingly, teachers reported students falling asleep in class. He says a lack of sleep increases stress

and is associated with a loss of humour, lack of empathy and low mood. It also greatly impairs blood-glucose regulation in young men, with research showing that their insulin levels are comparable to the early stages of diabetes. But it isn’t just a biological problem. Society isn’t very conducive to a good night’s sleep due to more relaxed parental attitudes to bedtimes and access to TVs, PCs, gaming devices and mobile phones, all of which promote alertness that doesn’t aid healthy sleep. Prof Foster has become so persuaded of the need for schools to adjust their start times that in 2009, he instigated a 10am start for 800 students at Monkseaton High School in North Tyneside, the first British school to do so. After observing the students, Foster says that the outcomes were clear: ‘The Monkseaton

experiment shows, frankly, that if you start at 10am, grades go up.’ There are doubters, however. One issue is a perceived negative impact on after-school activities, particularly competitive sports, although schools in the US have reported that this hasn’t been a problem. But a greater issue here and in Australia is union objections to longer working hours for teachers and support staff. Prof Foster, however, remains convinced that there is an ‘overwhelming case’ for shifting the times of a school day: ‘It will reduce their sleep deprivation, their learning will improve and, crucially, it will help to protect their physical and mental health.’

First day Starting at a new school for the first time doesn’t have to be all awkwardness in the playground and tears in the classroom (we’re talking about you, parents). Here Absolutely speaks to the experts about how to breeze through the first day Ngaire Telford, Deputy Head at Herne Hill School, has some words of wisdom for the parents of younger ones… Preparing for the first day of school starts way before the day itself! Firstly, it's great to turn the chore of buying the school uniform into a special event where just the child (no siblings) is taken to try it on and buy it, with lots of encouragement on how grown up and wonderful they look. Follow with a treat, like a lunch, of their choice. Another good way to prepare your child is to read stories about starting school or nursery. Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg is a great one and covers the whole gamut from hanging coats on pegs in the cloakroom, to school lunches. There are also good clips on the Internet; watch with your little one and talk about your own (positive) experiences of starting school.

Discuss some of the exciting things they will be experiencing in their new classrooms. If you have visited the class already and know of specific toys or activities your child was drawn to, make a point of referring to them. This applies too to any staff or children they may have met on their visit.

...and Alice James, Head of Year 7 at Sydenham High School GDST, with advice for parents of pre-teens… DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND BE PREPARED: go through parent handbooks, and everything supplied by the school. If you don’t have any recent secondary school experience, familiarise yourself with their procedures and rules as they may be very different to those you have been used to at junior school. Make sure your child knows where to go on their first day and who their form tutor is. BE CONFIDENT AND SUPPORTIVE: being reassuring and positive is especially important for the first day but also during the run-up and in the first few weeks while they settle in. Just be careful that your support doesn't become obtrusive; your child should know that you’re there as back-up but should still feel in control. GET ORGANISED: establish a routine from Day One – both morning and evening - including preparing books and PE kits for the next day. It’s a good idea to get your child to put up copies of their weekly lesson and homework timetables in their room and perhaps kitchen, somewhere you can both check them. TRAVEL SMART: starting Senior School often means travelling on their own for the first time and probably on an unfamiliar route. If that’s the case, try it out together in advance so that you are both confident about the route. Make sure they know your contact details as well as the school’s and know who to contact if they are held up. CARE AND ATTENTION: change (at any age!) can be emotionally draining as well as physically tiring. Your child is likely to become more tired as term progresses. Make sure they eat well and get plenty of sleep, particularly at weekends and during holidays. KEEP IT REAL: while much may be changing in your child’s daily life, try to keep some continuity outside school, including maintaining links with old friends and participating in favourite hobbies.

If your child becomes upset or reluctant to talk about starting school, don't labour the point. It is a difficult concept for a very young child to understand, and it is often best to dive in on the day. When the big day finally arrives, remember to take the obligatory picture, put some tissues in your pocket (for your tears, hopefully not your child's!) and try to leave them as soon as you can. Reassure them that you will be back shortly, along with all of the other parents. Experienced teams will know how to comfort children and should contact parents quickly if the child remains distressed. Most importantly, try not to worry about it yourself. Your child will perceive any anxiety you may have and this will, of course, make them nervous. Talk to other parents about their experiences, particularly those whose children have attended where your child will be joining. And rest assured, the starting school process is almost always hardest for the parents. …oh, and do not be late!

DON’T PUSH: be realistic and don’t expect to be told everything at the end of the first day. Allow them to tell you things in their own time. They will need time to process all of their new experiences so you’re more likely to get a balanced view of the day by waiting rather than by bombarding them with questions. STAY IN TOUCH: in contrast to Junior School communications, there is likely to be less day-to-day contact at Senior School so take advantage of any opportunities to keep in touch with the school and your child’s form tutor. The more involved you are and the more you understand the school’s ethos and approach, the better placed you will be to support your child. Read the school’s bulletins, letters and notices regularly, that way you’ll know what’s going on and in case your child forgets to tell you something important. Remind your child that: - They aren’t the only ones feeling anxious; tell them to smile, be outgoing and friendly. - They should try different activities and pursue their interests from the start – it will make them feel more at home. - Everyone was new once and whilst it might take them a little while to settle in, it will happen.

aving left Nottingham University Business School, I joined the Wates Group on a graduate programme. I moved up the ranks of the company via a stint creating and developing the highly successful Land and New Homes department and became Managing Director. In 2009, we then purchased Wates Residential from the Wates Group and renamed it Pedder. It has been a busy few years for us since, having opened 3 new estate agency offices, the mortgage provider Elysian Finance and Pedder Maintenance. I am particularly motivated by our ‘Pedder Community Promise’; an initiative we have been operating for over 3 years now. We provide a sustainable source of funds to Cancer Research UK and the local community. Our aim within the local community was to endorse those activities that otherwise wouldn’t be able to continue themselves, and with clear and structured plans we have managed to succeed. It has been incredibly rewarding for me to see my staff embrace all our causes whole-heartedly, and together we have managed to raise over £75,000 in just 3 years. Crystal Palace in particular is enjoying a recent surge in popularity, which I think can be put down to the vast improvements in transport links, the local amenities, the beautiful properties available and its outstanding schools. The gentrification of

Crystal Palace has been swift and the brilliant and diverse eateries are testament to this. Personal favourites include Joanna’s (pictured), The Exhibition Rooms and the wellestablished and long-standing Lorenzo’s.There is also the 200 acre Grade II listed Crystal Palace Park that offers, amongst many other diversions, the famous dinosaur collection, a maze and an animal farm. The new Overland Tube extension has brought a new lease of life to the area with connections into East London ensuring that it has never been easier to get out and about in town. There is a clear sense of optimism and the markets are improving, indeed the sales market is at its strongest since the crash of 2008/2009. This is due to increased buyer confidence, which has been supported by low interest rates and increased mortgage lending. The ‘Help to Buy’ scheme will also be accessible for all property types from January 2014, and as a result, I predict no let-up in this demand in the short term. The lettings market has also had a resurgence with ‘new lets’ and ‘re-lets’ as existing tenants turn to purchasing. The future for Pedder is all about consistently delivering the first class customer service we are renowned for and maintaining the very high standards we have in place. Proud is an overused word but after 3 focused years at the helm, I look at the empowered structure we have in place, the energised looks on my colleagues faces and I derive a strong sense of pride. Most interesting property I’ve been involved with: This has to be a one bedroom ground floor flat in Nunhead that the owners had definitely remodeled to their own needs. The flat was full of character and had a mezzanine platform built into the eves assessed by double staircases with portholes and skylights and doors at either end making cabin spaces, all making room for his three small children to sleep all in a row down the side of the house! Finding tenants to love this house as much as they did when they went overseas was a big challenge.

The property I’d most like on our books is: The Grade II listed ‘Concrete House’ at 524 Lordship Lane, East Dulwich, built in 1873 by Charles Drake. It is believed to be the only surviving example of a 19th century concrete house in England. I’ve been watching the once spooky looking derelict house decline over the last decade and was very excited to see it being finally renovated to its former glory. Most unusual interior: I had the privilege of marketing a flat in the converted church on the corner of Mundania Road and Forest Hill Road in East Dulwich earlier this year. This conversion is magnificent, leaving the sweeping gothic arches intact and integrating them into the odd shaped bedrooms and hallways. Imposing wooden gothic carvings and a vista of stained glass windows in the rounded reception room make this one of the most beautiful and sympathetically converted flats I’ve been in.

he mortgage market has recently been boosted by the new Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney’s guidance that the current low interest rates would remain until 2016 and the Chancellor’s further clarification on the Help to Buy scheme starting in January 2014. The £12bn scheme, which involves the Government guaranteeing a portion of the home loan, will be available for all homeowners ( including remortgages) with deposits of 5% and over with house values at less than £600,000. The “Help to Buy” scheme is not available to second homeowners, buy to let landlords, buyers with no credit history and high loan-to-value mortgages will have to meet strict criteria. Ultimately the changes in the value of the property is the risk of the homeowner. There are differing views by economists on whether or not these Government schemes will have an inflationary effect on house prices and whether the prices will decline once the schemes are withdrawn.
