ll things bright and beautiful is our theme for this issue; colourful fashion, interiors inspired by nature and nothing but blue skies and white sands in our travel section. And no amount of April showers can dampen our optimism. We’re looking at the new season’s palette and discovering that it mostly consists of pink. That’s right – as soon as the first rays of sun emerge from winter we are all going to be dressing in bubblegum shades. But they’re very grown-up ones, so don’t worry, you won’t be looking like your five-year-old. If pink isn’t your thing, our fashion editor Charlotte Adsett has rounded up the best of the sunshine yellow trend – we already have our eyes on a particular Anya Hindmarch bag.

Now the clothes are sorted, what about the wardrobe itself? On page 56 we discover that metal-free bedrooms can aid a good night’s sleep, so picking out a gorgeous wooden bed is actually good for your heath. Also in our interiors section is the news that Ceramic Art London will be moving to a new address this April: Central Saint Martins. Pay a visit to discover work from the best ceramacists in the world. In addition to this is our lead interview with The X-Files alum Gillian Anderson and travel inspiration from Sri Lanka. I hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! ◆

hen the Anderson reprising her role announcement as Agent Scully in The X-Files came that The X-Files was returning to our screens, the internet exploded with joy. Yet amid the fanatical reception from loyal followers of the travails of Agents Mulder and Scully, it can be easy to forget that for the actors who played those iconic characters, there’s something special about returning too. “I had the lingering sense that I had never really said goodbye to the character or to the story,” says Gillian star was difficult to shake, so much so Anderson, who played iconic FBI agent that when she was first asked to return Dana Scully on the small screen from to the role she said no, having “worked 1993 to 2002 as well as in the two movie really hard putting Dana Scully to sleep”. offshoots. With her partner, dedicated However, eventually she relented. “Well, but paranoid Agent Fox Mulder (David at first I thought to myself, ‘there’s no Duchovny), Scully investigated all way in hell I want to do this again’, but manner of paranormal activity and the everyone kept telling me it would be fun duo quickly became cult icons, while both and after a while I just said, ‘Oh, what Anderson and Duchovny went on to enjoy the heck! Let’s do it!” Also, the chance to huge career success. reunite with Duchovny was hard to pass For Anderson, the role that changed up. “After shooting the last film, we still her life and launched her as a global thought we would get to do a third,” she

says. “But then it never happened. So I thought it would be great to be able to work with David again and get some closure to what had been a major part of our lives.” Re-launched as a six-part ‘event’ series running in the UK on Channel 5, the show has been well-received by fans and critics alike for capturing the mystery and nostalgia of the original while updating its approach for the digital generation. What has also been noted is how fantastic both title stars look and how the screen still fizzles with their easy chemistry. Anderson in particular has barely aged and still radiates luminous beauty, with the trademark porcelain skin and reddish-gold hair that made her a poster girl for sci-fi fans the world over. Off-screen, one of Anderson’s more startling traits is her rather proper British accent. So accustomed are we to seeing her on TV speaking with an American drawl that it is easy to forget she has spent a lot of her time in the UK. Born in Chicago, she grew up in Crouch End until the age of 11 when her parents

moved back to America. Then, aged 24 and living in New York, she landed her breakout X-Files role. Anderson considers herself both British and American but for the last few years she has been based firmly in London where she lives centrally with her sons Oscar, nine, and Felix, seven. Her love of the capital is well known and she has said in the past that when she arrives back in town she likes to gaze out of taxi windows to “soak in the city I feel so grateful to live in”. In the intervening years since we last saw her as Scully, the 47-year-old

has been carving out a new identity in a variety of TV series including BBC2 dramas The Fall and Hannibal. Since turning 40, Anderson has experienced a resurgence. In particular she has been hailed for her role in The Fall, where DSI Stella Gibson is an icy but gifted detective who strides down the corridors of Belfast’s central police station. Brought in from the Met to solve a series of murders, she terrifies male colleagues with her confident sexuality and incisive brain. The show is shot in Belfast and a third series is expected this year. Anderson is known for playing strong, outspoken females, and her role in The Fall is no exception. “Stella is one of the most difficult but creatively satisfying characters I’ve ever played,” she says. “It’s been an honour to be in her company, even though it’s a complicated process for me to play her. It’s also easier to work when you don’t have to be on a plane all the time and you feel you’re not disrupting your life with your children as much.” In 2014, Anderson took a job even closer to home when she played Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams at the Young Vic, for which she won the Evening Standard

Theatre Award for Best Actress and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. In June this year she will reprise the role at St Anne’s Warehouse, a theatre in New York, an undertaking the busy actress is both excited and exhausted by. “It’s going to be very demanding and draining but it’s such a great and important role,” she says. “I’m often drawn to playing complex and troubled women, and those are the characters that give you so much insight into human nature. Human beings are complicated creatures, aren’t we?” Indeed, Anderson herself is a complicated and mysterious personality. She is understandably guarded about her private life, having been married twice and having once revealed that she’d had relationships with women in the past. Also, during the original X-Files run there were rumours of both a love affair and a fallout between Anderson and Duchovny (though it’s difficult to know how much of that was imagined by fans desperate to see the great on-screen romance reflected in real life). Whatever their differences,

Anderson says she and Duchovny are “a lot closer” than before. “We’re both a little older and have a little more perspective that probably comes from being parents and going through different struggles in our lives,” she says. “Now we see that it’s easier to support each other and enjoy our friendship and the time we’ve been able to spend together.” For the record, Anderson is now very much single and enjoying her life in London. “I’m so lucky to have such great work,” she told The Telegraph last year. “I’ve got a fantastic life, I have a wonderful relationship with my kids and there’s nothing lacking.” The prospect of a new relationship, however, remains possible, with Anderson stating that although she
thinks “it is better not to manipulate the situation” she is sure that she wants her next relationship “to be the one” – regardless of who that person is. “To me a relationship is about loving another human being,” she remarks philosophically, before going on to say that gender is, in her eyes, “irrelevant” when it comes to romantic relationships. With her triumphant return to the small screen in full swing, there’s every possibility that Anderson will be too busy, “either filming or on planes or putting my sons to bed,” to find her potential soulmate. In the meantime, though, she remains content to discover everything London has to offer. l The X-Files airs on Channel 5

The best thing about wearing it is that there are no rules,” says Chiaki Tanaka, London store manager. Prices for new generation kimono start from £500. Wasokan is particularly excited to launch its kimono separates to the European market. Currently the range comprises 40 silk jackets and skirts. “Not only are our separates a great gateway product for full kimono, they are also strong fashion pieces in their own right for people of every culture,” says Ikeda. etting a bikini wax can be a daunting task. Whether you’re self-conscious, particularly sensitive or just busy, finding a good salon can be a game changer. Strip Boutique in Islington is a new addition to the Strip brand, which already has wax bars in Notting Hill, Soho, Chelsea and the City. Not just a salon, Strip also sells lovely lingerie, stylish swimwear and beauty products as well as providing waxing services. I popped in for a Hollywood bikini wax but at the sight of the sumptuous treatment room and my smiley technician Alice, I am moved to ask if they can possibly sort out my slightly overgrown brows, too. Luckily, Alice assures me that it's no problem and she quickly and efficiently shapes my brows while I lie back and relax. For the bikini wax, Strip uses Lycon; this is a ‘hot wax’ (despite its relatively low temperature) that is both efficient and less painful than strip wax. Let's face it: having hot wax poured on a sensitive part of your anatomy and then ripped off quickly is never going to be entirely pain-free, but practical and competent Alice makes the entire experience comfortable and devoid of any awkwardness by keeping me talking. After we’re finished, Alice gives me tips for aftercare to avoid ingrown hairs and recommends I use Lycon Anti Bump Foaming Gel. I emerge smooth and without any lingering discomfort. ◆ ●STRIP BOUTIQUE 164 Upper Street, N1 stripwaxbar.com

A GREAT MATCH Wine and food pairings for April B y J a n e Pa r k i n s o n
WILD GARLIC SOUP
he delicious tangy flavour of new season wild garlic is captured at its best in a simple soup; and a white that isn’t too dramatic in flavour but lively and crisp really respects the soup. Northern Italy is a haven for such wines and this one from Lugana would be terrific. ● Zenato Villa Flora Lugana 2014 £9.99, waitrose.com
T
HALIBUT & MASHED POTATO
ish and Chablis is as classic a match as you can get, but a meatytextured fish such as halibut shouldn’t be paired with any wallflower Chablis – it needs something with personality. This has fleshy peachy roundness as well as a cool blade of lemony freshness. ● Samuel Billaud Chablis Les Grands Terroirs 2014, £12.95, thewinesociety.com
F
PASSION FRUIT PANNA COTTA
he exotic flavour of passion fruit screams out for something equally ripe and vibrant in flavour. This Chilean sweet wine is a serious bargain. Made with the Moscatel grape, it’s pungent with lavender aromas while the tropical flavours make it a heavenly match here. ● Vistamar Late Harvest Moscatel 2015, £6.99 (37.5cl), majestic.co.uk

Oriole Bar Drink your way around the world in just one night Wo r d s J a m e s S ta n i f o r t h
eneath the floors of Smithfield Market, Nightjar’s younger (but bigger) sister, Oriole, is resurrecting a forgotten spirit: adventure. Part speakeasy, part tropical lounge, this is what a cocktail bar should be and it breaks the rules with new drinks that are as intriguing as they are delicious. Featuring three sections Ω Old World, New World and The Orient Ω the menu is inspired by drinking habits from around the globe. It’s a voyage of discovery and, just like any good adventure, it lets you explore places you’ve never been before. One particular highlight is the Virginia Don. This mix of whisky, tobacco liqueur and rose ice is a smokey and floral concoction inspired by the 18th century Tobacco Lords who made their fortunes trading alcohol, sugar and tobacco from the Old World to the New. Served with a miniature bouquet of frozen roses it’s seriously impressive. Meanwhile, the New World’s Zapotec is a mezcalbased tomato cocktail that is spicy and citrusy, with an umami kick. It pairs perfectly with a plate of tuna nikkei. Finally, proving that they can still get the basics right, their Manhattan is made with a signature twist Ω a cherry coated in bitter chocolate, suspended on the side of the glass. This drink sums it up perfectly: go to Oriole for a faultlessly adventurous but sophisticated night out.

Galley London
What happens when a chef and a stylist go into business together? We find out
T
Wo r d s p e n d l e h a r t e
his stylish new Islington eaterie was founded by a brother and sister duo – he’s a chef and she’s a stylist. With a long stint as head chef of Randall & Aubin under his belt, Marcel Grzyb has devised a seafood-heavy menu for Galley, his first own venture, named for the long theatre-like kitchen where he and his team perform. The place looks stylish, fresh and shiny, with lots of elegant details (sharp menu fonts, filament bulbs, crackle-glazed crockery and beautiful glasses). We’re offered seats at the kitchen counter, but prefer to sit more cosily at a table at the back. First off there’s a lengthy gin and tonic menu that includes ingredients such as frozen grapes, cardamom and basil. To eat, there are ‘small plates’ and ‘large plates’; we choose a (quite large) selection
of small ones. So there’s crispy Cornish squid with Japanese pepper sauce; yellowfin tuna tartare with wasabi nori crisps and mango; and octopus and chorizo with garlic pesto, all of them clever and faultless, but for us the real hero dishes are two less showy-sounding but impressively creative salads. Padron peppers with paneer, carrot and quinoa salad with teriyaki dressing is not only pretty but intriguingly delicious, as is goat’s cheese with barley and pea and mint salad. For pudding we eschew dessert cocktails (despite one of them featuring actual coco pops) and choose a white chocolate panna cotta with passionfruit and honeycomb. It looks as pretty as anything, but as we’ve realised by now, Galley’s not just a pretty face.

ri Lanka’s history is a turbulent one. Years of civil war and environmental disasters could have left the country in dire straits, and while the political situation is far from stable – corruption is still a problem and cultural tensions run high – the fascinating history, ecological abundance, and beauty of the island has kept it on numerous travel hotlists. In recent years, the country has become a top destination, but rocky PRIVATE VILLA AT terrains and little investment in SUN AQUA PASIKUDAH the east coast means that foreign feet have rarely strayed far from the country’s capital, Colombo. Typical travelling routes don't venture far from the lush, culturally rich region of Kandy in the Central Province, where the ancient monarchy once ruled, and Galle in the southwest, which offers a stellar combination of seaside bliss and an opulent cultural heritage. Sure, these destinations are beautiful and make for a wonderful travelling experience, but there is more to Sri Lanka, brought to the region by foreign investment and it lies on the east coast. diminished. Since the war finally ended in Sri Lanka’s civil war, a battle that 2009, venture in the province has gradually spanned 25 years, divided the country, improved and reconstruction is well seeing the east coast abandoned by all under way. in Colombo is probably your best bet, taking in some of the most breathtaking views over the undulating landscape. Arriving in Batticaloa you will see bullet-riddled shacks and collateral damage from the shattering 2004 tsunami. These remains offer a harrowing insight into the hard reality people in this territory faced during the conflict. A quick 20-minute drive from the seaplane reservoir and you’re at the resort, enjoying a warm Sri Lankan welcome. The main building is surrounded by private villas, which all sit facing the azure Indian Ocean. Each building houses a large bed, private outside area and al fresco bathroom area, with some even boasting their own plunge pools. If you’re lucky enough to bag one of these, be sure to take a magical midnight dip for a spot of stargazing. The grounds are home to a gym and beauty salon, the holistic Sun Aqua Spa, and a large granite swimming pool which faces onto the beach. The long stretch of golden sand boasts the longest shallow coastline on the island of Sri Lanka and shares the same water as the neighbouring Maldives – so you know you’re in good company. Another big draw at Sun Aqua Pasikudah is the food. Gourmet cuisine from around the world is available (you can have eggs benedict for breakfast, for example) but it’s the traditional Sri Lankan cuisine you want to save your appetite for. Local ingredients are used where possible, with many grown in the hotel’s gardens.

SRI LANKA'S LONGEST SHALLOW COASTLINE AT SUN AQUA PASIKUDAH
There are five dining options: our favourites are Latitude for all-day casual al fresco dining, and the Pavilion, which houses a glass-enclosed wine cellar and is ideal for a private celebratory dinner. The lunchtime buffet at the former is quite something – expect a spread of spicy Sri Lankan curries, enormous prawns, roti, dhal, gotu kola mallung (a salad of chillies, ginger, shallots and freshly grated coconut), eggplant moju (deep-fried aubergine with chilli, mustard seeds, cloves and ginger), all finished with bowls of exotic fresh fruit. While the resort offers plenty of activities to keep you entertained for well over a week – scuba diving, volleyball, eating and lying in the sun are just some of the activities you can partake in – a trip to the local sights is well worth pulling yourself away
from the sun lounger and frozen strawberry daiquiris for. A must-do is an excursion to the Maduru Oya National Park, where you’ll likely spot everything from wild boars and water buffalo to the enormous Sri Lankan elephant. Another expedition worth considering is a trip to Dambana to visit the last remaining tribe of Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, the Vedda (which translates as “hunter” in Tamil). While there’s not much to see other than the villagers going about their everyday tasks, there is also a museum with more details about their culture. The service, style and attention to details at Sun Aqua is exceptional, so while you’ll discover a whole new world, with it will be all the luxury comforts you could hope for. A trip to remember indeed. u

T
he Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is an international Formula One event that draws crowds and coverage from all over the globe. It made history in 2004 as the first Formula One Grand Prix to be held in the Middle East and ever since its inception Gulf Air, Bahrain’s national carrier, has been the Title Sponsor. The prestigious airline has also held the coveted title of Official Carrier of the biennial Bahrain International Airshow since it was held in 2010. This partnership is symbolic of both Gulf Air’s importance to the Kingdom of Bahrain and also the Grand Prix’s place on the world’s sporting stage. The slogan

for this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix race, “On the edge of action”, encapsulates the spirit of the event and promises a real spectacle over the three days in April. Those travelling to Bahrain, either for the race, for business or for pleasure will see the Grand Prix splashed across Gulf Air’s inflight magazine Gulf Life, their inflight TVC and in the Gulf Air Falcon Gold Lounges located in Dubai, Bahrain and London Heathrow. Passengers will be able to peruse the in-flight entertainment from the luxury of the 30 new Falcon Gold Class; these new seats, designed with passenger feedback in mind, convert into fully-flat beds with ample space between seats and even a massage feature. Each seat also comes with complete Audio-Video on Demand (AVOD) features,
an individual 15-inch touch screen in every seat and high quality noisecancelling headphones. The excellent experience doesn’t stop there; renowned for their traditional Arabian hospitality, Gulf Air offer both a SkyChef and a SkyNanny service. The SkyChef makes sure to prepare tailor-made dishes based on passengers’ particular tastes and preferences, meaning dining on a Gulf Air flight is more like a five star restaurant than an aeroplane while the SkyNannies make sure the little ones are looked after and entertained. All this in addition to the fabulous Gulf Air Falcon Gold lounges means that jetting off to the excitement of the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is the most luxurious experience imaginable.

espite still being in its early stages, 2016 seems set to be the year of mindfulness. Combine this with growing awareness and efforts to preserve the environment and it makes sense that trends in interiors are leaning towards sustainable and natural materials, with homeowners eschewing metal and plastic in favour of wood. This is where Team 7 come in. Pioneers of natural sustainable living, they put a premium on guaranteeing all the materials they source are acquired fairly and ecologically; the company has

even been awarded the renowned Green Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. Their aesthetic is clean and classic with a contemporary edge, which explains why Wharfside, the UK’s leading supplier of contemporary luxury furniture and kitchens, is their main stockist. Wharfside’s commitment to Nox Bed
design and bespoke furniture has kept them on the cutting edge of interiors for over 50 years with wood remaining at forefront of what they do. And it’s not just about looks: recent research suggests that removing metal from bedrooms can actually aid natural sleep patterns and lead to a better night’s kip. The logic is that metal accumulates electrical charges that can distort the body’s own electrical field, which makes it harder for your body to heal and sleep. While most wooden bed frames contain a little metal at the joints, Austrian-crafted Team 7 beds are built with traditional slot-in joinery meaning they are entirely metal free.

in an elegant S-line at the corners. The contemporary design is heightened by the impression of the bed floating above the floor. You can choose between a leather or solid wood headboard to finish it off. Valore is a Mediterranean-inspired collection, with several headboards to choose from, including one with a concave moulding reminiscent of a Greek pillar – ideal for anyone looking to make their bed a centrepiece and add a little luxury to their room. For the more understated, there’s Lunetto; a collection that is specifically designed to provide a compact footprint and whose versatile beds come in futon, standard or deluxe height. Whether you are looking for decadence or demureness, visit the Wharfside website to bring a little of the outside in this spring.

Like all brands stocked by Wharfside, Team 7 is built to last; all of their bedroom furniture is made from natural hardwoods, exclusively finished with herbal oil and, although very stable, the pieces can be easily dismantled meaning that nothing need be left behind when moving house. Team 7 has three distinct collections to choose from when crafting your bedroom, each containing beds and other bedroom furniture such as chests, bedside tables, wardrobes and sideboards; all available at Wharfside. The Nox collection is an example of sophisticated carpentry with the solid wood edges of the bed rounded in opposite directions, uniting

ne of the most ancient industries on the planet, ceramic artistry boasts an impressive history. Since humans first discovered that clay could be dug up from the ground, people have been fashioning objects in it – from the urns of antiquity to the cereal bowls of today. The technology and techniques in ceramics have undoubtedly changed, but the basics remain. Ceramic Art London is the leading showcase for contemporary ceramic art and one of the most dynamic displays of the industry’s finest from across the globe. This year’s instalment will take place from 8 to 10 April in a new home at Central Saint Martins’ new building in King's Cross, a move across town from its original residence at the Royal College of Art in Kensington. The fair, now in its 12th year, will display over 80 artists and a varied selection of exciting and challenging work. For those already in the know, this is an opportunity to explore further and buy directly from the makers. For gallery owners and collectors, it’s a chance to snap up new talent. Visitors will enjoy meandering through the vivid displays in the beautiful Grade II listed Victorian Granary Building. The venue recently underwent a £200m

REBECCA NOONAN
H
ow did a shy little boy originally from Newcastle become an estate agent in Clerkenwell? That is a very good question. My first taste of estate agency was at the tender age of 13 when I was placed with Mann and Co in Farnborough for a two week work experience placement. I remember being so shy that I was too scared to answer the telephone, so all I did was make coffee and photocopy property details. But working there clearly remained in my subconscious mind for many years to come. After leaving university I started working at British Airways as cabin crew where I stayed for over four years. I loved the job very much but I knew that I wanted to find a career that incorporated my love of people, where I would have some creative freedom and where I would not be desk-bound. I applied for a lettings position in South Croydon as the requirements of the role, looking around properties and interacting
Clerkenwell has the feel of Covent Garden but on a much more intimate scale
with people on a daily basis, seemed to fit the bill for me. After I got the job, I found that I had an aptitude for it and that’s where it all began. I remained in South Croydon for 18 months but I knew that I wanted to move my work into the heart of London. I started working in lettings at another company in Covent Garden and absolutely fell in love with the area, so much so that I also lived there for four years. While the commute was obviously very convenient and I found great joy living there, I wanted to further my career and pursue residential sales. I ended up securing a role as a sales negotiator in Borough, before transferring to Clerkenwell a year later.
After spending time back and forth over the next couple of years, I ended up at Currell in Clerkenwell, first as a senior sales negotiator, and now as the head of office - and I haven’t looked back since. I chose Currell because I like the fact that it is a family run company and has an almost boutique style, which is very in-keeping with what Clerkenwell is all about. Clerkenwell has the feel of Covent Garden but on a much more intimate scale. It has a village vibe but benefits from being adjacent to Angel, Holborn, the City and is still very close to the West End. I especially love the architecture, like the Georgian squares of Myddleton Square and Lloyd Square where you can find some wonderful houses. They are simply amazing examples of Georgian London at its best. I really am passionate about my career in property and to top it off, I absolutely love the Clerkenwell area. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. ◆

may already have four or five homes in other cities around the world so they want a property in London which they can move straight into,” he says. “They are time-starved and may only be in town for a few weeks at a time so they look for beautifully designed homes which don’t require any further work. “Staff accommodation is another feature high up on the list of priorities amongst prime property purchasers, along with the latest in home automation, walk-in dressing rooms, treatment rooms and his and her bathrooms."

“Our clients are usually wealthy and sometimes famous people and they often have very unusual demands including panic rooms with their own food and water supply, thermal imaging cameras that can differentiate between animals and humans, encrypted telephone lines and broadband connections, TVs concealed behind mirrors and fingerprint activated locks,” he says.
RICHARD BARBER Director

“Wine cellars are very popular and many people install equipment to regulate the temperature and maintain humidity levels. Also, people often like to have a space where they can create a display feature with their wine collection. A wine cellar can certainly add to the wow factor of a property, more so than bar areas which are now outdated."

“I once visited a development of a lovely mews house and there was a beautiful vintage Jaguar in the garage,” she says. “The developer had installed a glass wall between the study and the garage whereby with a touch of a button, the glass went from being opaque to clear so you could admire your car.”

“Prime buyers are quite detailed in their approach to a property,” she says. “They want to know where their Italian marble came from specifically and who the original interior designer was.”

“The homes which are being built for the super wealthy typically come with every facility you might need because it’s all ‘on demand’ and they don’t need to leave the haven of their home if they don’t want to,” she says. “For example, super prime homes are usually built with a hair salon room, beauty room, swimming pool, gym, study and library room (which can double up as a home office), staff quarters, and a staff kitchen for event catering needs and so on. A number of our clients at this level will also buy properties with adjoining mews houses so staff can stay nearby, or they’ll buy properties very close to their home for their team of staff."

“A lot of our clients want a fully kitted out wine cellar with tasting area and a private cigar room too,” he says. “Also, these days a two-car garage is an essential pre-requisite for viewings and increasingly people want room for their classic car collection too.”

“The right amount of technology is important – there is a very fine line between having exceptional and seamless technology and overdoing

it,” she says.“We find that most of our clients and buyers require an audio visual system that is simple to work, but increases the efficiency of day-to-day life. Also, I would say heating, lighting and water remote operational use is a must but some ‘unnecessary’ technology such as electronic curtains and fingerprint key access to doors and safes can concern some buyers.”
ANDREW HAWKINS Director
at developer Rocket Investments
“Two trends in the new homes market in London are firstly superfast broadband, which is a must, as well as communal entertainment services. For example, the Atlas Building development of 300-plus apartments near Old Street in the heart of London’s digital hub Tech City, will offer residents their own cinema and private resident’s lounge as well as the usual gym, swimming pool and spa. Prices start from £698,000.”

“Buyers now have pretty high kitchen expectations and want a high tech room to whip up a weeknight masterpiece, entertain on a grand scale, finish homework and act as the all-encompassing heart and soul of the household,” he says. “The chosen brand says a lot; Smallbone for the classic, Bulthaup for the efficient and Boffi for the super high end. Kitchens can make or break the sale and a shabby kitchen can cheapen the property’s appearance or value.” u GET INTO THE KITCHEN: HAUTE CUISINE AT HIGHBURY PLACE, N5 FOR £5.65M. “Not to be outdone by their wife’s handbag-and-shoe stuffed wardrobe, some of our male clients believe their wardrobe cannot be complete without an inbuilt watch winder for their extensive collection of Swiss watches,” he says. “This is something we have seen on a few occasions at the top end of the market, notably in St. John’s Wood and also Chelsea.”
81 CHIS_April16_Property_MUST_HAVES.indd 81
“We are seeing a bit of a backlash against having too much technology in the home – people want their homes to look and feel simple and intuitive and more importantly, be easy to live with and uncomplicated to fix when things go wrong,” he says. "There is a growing trend for more interiors created by British craftsmen, so there seems to be a focus on provenance and ‘Made in Britain’ fixtures and fittings. We are also seeing more unusual ‘extra’ fitness rooms in prime central London one-off properties – like Bikrum yoga rooms or spinning rooms.”
