Editor’s Letter New Year
“J
anuary is a month for battening down the hatches and finding some allimportant ‘me’ time. If you’re emerging from an eventful party season, you may be in need of a vitality boost – so take a look at our guide to the healthy eating options in the local area (page 40). Yes, people, it’s 2013 and they do exist! Dining out need not always be associated with extreme indulgence and over-eating, and we’re pointing the way towards a lighter, healthier year. We’ve also reviewed the daddy of all London sushi restaurants, Feng Sushi, on page 50.
Fitness fanatics may find our bike shop spotlight useful (page 60). As the capital’s cycling obsession continues to grow, we pinpoint the best shops and most desirable products – ensuring that you can cycle in style, whatever the weather. As usual, our travel pages offer valuable inspiration for those who simply need to get away from it all (page 64). For those still firmly in hibernation mode, a DVD or Blu-ray box set might be just what you need. In that case, I can highly recommend The Hour. For the uninitiated, this BBC2 drama – set in London during the super stylish 1950s – has lately replaced Mad Men in my affections. As such, I was chuffed to meet Lisa Greenwood, who plays Sissy on the show (not to mention more than a little jealous of the time she’s spent with co-star Ben Whishaw). At any rate, you can always curl up nice and cosy with your latest edition of Absolutely.”

#Off Piste City togs just don’t cut the mustard at this time of year. Nothing keeps the freezing winds out like ski-gear, so this month I’m championing duvet jackets as streetwear. This one, £215 by Maison Scotch, (0845 862 2056), has the added benefit of looking tailored thanks to an extended collar and belt. This cute hat, £55, comes courtesy of Hilary Grant, my favourite knitwear label of the moment (they use only the highest grade lambswool), while these Jack Wills moon boots, £89, are perfect après ski attire (or will come in handy when it does eventually snow in the city). Altogether, this ensemble will ensure you look super cool if you’re off to the slopes in the new year.

Doctors, Dissection and Resurrection Men MUSEUM OF LONDON Throughout January In 2006, Museum of London archaeologists excavated a burial ground at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel discovering parts of some 262 bodies in the process. The remains showed evidence of dissection, autopsy, amputation, bones wired for teaching and animals dissected for studies in comparative anatomy. This major new exhibition unveils models and drawings, detailed documents and original artefacts to reveal something of 19th century bodysnatchers and the surgeons they supplied. Those of a squeamish disposition, be warned. 150 London Wall, EC2; museumoflondon.org.uk

Now the comeback begins, and they’re marking the start of 2013 - and the imminent release of their much-anticipated sophomore record, Good Together – with a one-off show at the Islington Metal Works (aka Electrowerkz). The Turn of the Screw ALMEIDA THEATRE From 18 January Lindsay Posner returns to the Almeida to direct a new stage adaptation of Henry James’ celebrated novella. The Hour Has Come
Lisa Greenwood, one of the stars of hit BBC show The Hour talks to Helen Baron about life on set, the demands of fifties styling... and what it’s like to work with thinking woman’s crumpet, Ben Whishaw
L
isa Greenwood is adorable. She enters the room flustered and giggly, fashionably dressed in modern-day attire, a complete contrast to the character she plays in The Hour. That character is secretaryturned-production assistant Sissy Cooper, whose chirpy Cockney charm is matched only by her eagerness to build a career at the Beeb - not the easiest of propositions, in an age and industry where the opportunities for women were somewhat smaller in number than they are today. Still, Sissy makes the most of every chance that comes her way - and a similar positivity shines from Greenwood as she smiles in greeting. She puts me in mind of a fledgling Sienna Miller, with her tousled boho look and ‘70s style floppy hat, her lace dress and leather jacket. Sissy’s red locks are gone Greenwood is now blonde - but the smattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose remains. We’re here to talk about The Hour, which is now in its second season on BBC Two and about to make the leap from cult following to huge global fanbase, but I start at the beginning, discovering that Greenwood has only been acting professionally for two years. It turns out that her mum enrolled her in a youth drama group in order to combat shyness. ‘Growing up, I didn’t have much of a social life; I watched films and TV obsessively. After seeing the film Vera Drake, I knew I really wanted to act.’ We’ve all heard similar tales (in fact, it seems that parents of self-conscious youngsters would
be well-advised to encourage them into amdram), but Greenwood’s success was a result of talent as well as sage parenting. Luck also had a part to play: her ‘foot-in-the-door’ moment came on applying for an an internship at an acting agency. Randomly asked to audition for a part in a promotional film about road safety, Greenwood didn’t get the job - but she won a place on the agency’s books instead. A role in EastEnders followed - surely something of a pilgrimage, I say, hailing as she does from East Ham. ‘I grew up watching it, so that was great,’ she says. ‘It’s something you need to cross off your list if you’re from the East End, I guess! I’m usually the only Cockney on set, so it was nice that on EastEnders there were others!’
to detail, The Hour is a lighter, crisper proposition, offering a singularly British atmosphere and outlook, a more overt interest in the politics of the time and a healthy dollop of mystery to boot. Season one mixed murder, espionage and the Suez Crisis into a heady series of questions about the nature of democracy and the ethics of imperialism; season two, which is airing at the moment, turns its gaze towards issues like immigration, police corruption and the exploitation of women. The genius of the show is that for all the lifelike drama and heavyweight cultural questions asked, it’s never less than ripping good fun. And because at its heart is a nascent show striving to make its mark at the BBC, postmodern parallels abound. I crammed the entire first season into the weekend before the interview and at time of writing, am seriously obsessed with the second, to the point of keeping transmission night free of all appointments. But Greenwood is wisely keeping schtum on plot details. That said, she’s happy to divulge the details of her audition. ‘I saw the casting team three times,’ she tells me. ‘I remember I was busting for the loo the first time; I thought the producer was the toilet attendant and asked her for the toilet key! Thankfully she found it funny.’ I ask if the similarities between Greenwood and Sissy appealed to her, what with both being young and up-and-coming, working on a new and exciting show. She laughs. ‘And both working for the BBC! There were a lot of comparisons in the beginning, though
“She enters the room flustered and giggly, fashionably dressed in modern-day attire, a complete contrast to the character she plays” Greenwood’s next big score was The Hour, and I can barely contain my gushing enthusiasm for the show. Centring on the production of a visionary BBC news programme in 1950s London, the first series had plenty to say about the British establishment at a time of turbulence and rapid change. What it also had were great characters, some inspired by real life figures from the time. The press love comparisons, so during its first run the show was quickly lauded as the British Mad Men; but it’s not. While there are certainly similarities due to both series’ period style and amazing attention

particular. He’s a lovely man, very humble. Dominic is charming and funny, down to earth. Anna took me under her wing and gave me lots of advice; I was quite daunted before that, as the youngest on set. I’m very inspired by Romola, she’s strong in real life too - really intelligent; I’d love to emulate her career. She seems to have really played things her own way on the strength of her talent.’ And what of Peter Capaldi, who joined the cast for season two but is most famous for his role as scheming spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in political comedy The Thick of It? Here’s a man whose on-screen performances make Machiavelli look lily-livered - is he scary in real life? Greenwood laughs. ‘He’s lovely - I feel I’m disappointing people when I tell them that. He’s witty and super cool in real life - he doesn’t have to do anything; he just sits and is cool.’ Cool he may well be, I think, but not as glamorous as the girls: The Hour is as revered for its immaculate retro styling as it is admired for its depth. I ask Greenwood how much effort goes into making the show look so good. ‘A lot of work goes into the styling; we sit in the chair for an hour-and-a-half before filming. I don’t know how the women of the ‘50s did it! The clothes are so structured - it’s really filtered into my own style. I wear dresses more now.’ With such a harmonious atmosphere on-set and the show hitting its stride, finding new fans with every episode, hopes for the future must be high. Will we be seeing THE HOUR SERIES ONE another season? ‘It depends on the ratings,’ Greenwood says, ‘but I think all the actors would be up for it. It’d be like going back to school after the holidays . If we did go back it’s likely it would be the early sixties, so it would be a new fashion era.’ Greenwood goes on to tell me of her ambitions outside the show, saying that she’d like to do some theatre - at Anna Chancellor’s encouragement. And what of time outside work? What does a rising star from East London like to do when she’s not on duty? ‘I love East london; I go to Hoxton and Shoreditch a lot. I like going to doesn’t grab a clutch of awards - it seems to Brick Lane for a curry.’ have captured people’s imagination with a That upbeat, optimistic note is the same that fantastic cast. Romola Garai as gifted producer sounds whenever Greenwood’s character Sissy Bel Rowley, Ben Whishaw as idealistic reporter is on-screen, and I can’t help but feel we’ll be Freddie Lyon, Dominic West as womanising seeing more of both of them in the future. This presenter Hector Madden, Anna Chancellor as young East Ender’s finest hour is clearly still Lix Storm... to come. ‘Completely,’ says Greenwood, ‘I thought I wouldn’t get to work with talent like that The Hour Complete Series 1 and 2 Box Set, for years! Ben is an amazing actor - I watch £19.99; amazon.co.uk him on playback and am so drawn to him in
“I feel so privileged to have worked on such a credible show” there aren’t as many now. Sissy is an East Ender too, though I’d say she is more naive or sweet than me.’ A pause, then: ‘Not that I’m saying I’m not sweet!’ Two particularly inviting aces up the show’s sleeve, I say, are the fact that it is written by a woman (Abi Morgan, of The Iron Lady and Shame fame) and that it sheds retrospective light on the role of women in the workplace at the time. And then there’s the fabulous attention to period detail. Lisa agrees. ‘We filmed in Hornsey Town Hall, which has retained some original fifties features, but they transformed it - the entire set was in the building - a couple of steps would take you from the office reception to a Soho nightclub. They should do tours of the place!’ The show sounds like a real pleasure to work on. ‘Oh yes,’ she says, ‘I feel so privileged to have worked on such a credible show - it’s been Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated and the second series has now aired in America.’ I tell her I’d be very surprised if the show 12

CHILL FACTOR
As the Big Freeze makes its way over to our fair isles, Ted Baker has a plan of action to stave off the wintry rime. The winter essentials range from faux fur collars and knitted snoods to a pair of delightful Chelsea welly boots. The coats come double-breasted, in quilted leather and faux fur shrug varieties; we especially love the Heritage (pictured) and the long wrap coat, in which we can imagine acting like quite the glamorous snow queen. WRAPPER’S DELIGHT
All hail Toast, for turning out aspiring winter garb minus the granny factor. Wearing fingerless gloves and snoods needn’t be unstylish, nor must it call to mind chestnuts roasting over a burnt-out oil drum. We’re gaga over the rich fabrics, Fair Isle patterns, Pippi Longstocking cable-knit socks and snow boots. The shearling coat is a beauty too - and not in the least bit Del Boy. 133 Upper Street, N1; toast.co.uk
Islington based shoe designer Emmy makes beautiful, handcrafted shoes, specialising in bridal and bespoke designs. Winning smile Angela Sacre trials the ingenious Waterlase method at Pure Periodontics
G
um disease (or periodontitis) is no rarity, even in the our enlightened times, and if left untreated it can lead to bleeding gums, receding gums and even loss of teeth. I didn’t fancy any of that – but I can’t say I was much tempted by the traditional, surgical approaches to offsetting such problems, either. Which is why I booked an appointment with Pure Periodontics, specialists in nonsurgical periodontics and pioneers of the Waterlase treatment. The method involves using high tech lasers – rather than the dreaded dentist’s drill – to remove debris and bacteria from between the teeth, dispatch bad gum tissue and even reshape healthy gums in order to improve and enhance the smile. And unlike the (frankly terrifying) drill, the Waterlase technology minimises bleeding and post-op swelling, so there’s no need to leave the dentist’s feeling like
JAN_TRIED & TESTED.indd 37
your mouth has been mauled. Pure Periodontics are General Dental Council-certified periodontists and masters of the Waterlase – and it shows. From the outset, I’m kept well-informed of the nature of the procedure, and lying back with my jaws agape I notice my heart isn’t beating at the usual ‘dentist’s chair’ rate. In short, I can’t imagine a friendlier and more relaxing environment in which to undergo what can seem in advance like a very unnerving treatment. Better still, unlike a mechanical drill, the laser’s lack of heat, vibration and pressure really does make it all much smoother, calmer and less painful. Lasers have long been the gold standard for many medical and cosmetic procedures, and the Waterlase was approved for use in hard tissue treatments by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1998. Since then, it has been cleared for many additional dental procedures, and thousands of dentists around the world have used it millions of times with less
need for unpleasant shots, anaesthetics, drills and numb lips. Perhaps the best thing about Waterlase is that it removes the need for squeamishness about gum disease and the treatment thereof – which is important, because periodontitis can contribute to (and be caused by) a host of wider issues such as diabetes, heart disease and smoking. Many of us suffer without knowing why. It also helps that Pure Periodontics are experts in the field: my treatment was a walk in the park compared to experiences I’ve had in the past. I left the practice with a healthier, happier mouth to prove it – and I didn’t even need to be referred in order to benefit; I just called and booked an appointment. In fact, all adult patients of Pure Periodontics receive a comprehensive annual evaluation of their gums, helping to nip nasty problems in the bud. A modern and holistic approach to oral hygiene, and one well worth looking into. 7 St John Street, EC1; pureperio.com

SUSHISAMBA BEST FOR: INVENTIVE CUISINE
This NY establishment has crossed the pond to open its first international outpost in our fair city. At last! The concept? A unique fusion of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine, music and design – a tri-cultural coalition, inspired by the mass migration of the Japanese to South America’s coffee plantations in the early 20th century. Sushisamba has achieved a culinary coup de maître, dishing up indigenous dishes as well as innovative combinations such as sashimi seviche and tuna tataki. Japanese is always a good bet for a healthy graze – a random sweep of the menu reveals such tantalising concoctions as yellowtail taquitos (lemongrass, avocado, aji panca miso, lime), heritage tomato and seaweed salad and wagu gyoza (courgette purée and su-shoyo dipping sauce). Dishes are pricey, but this is superlative dining atop Heron Tower, the city’s tallest skyscraper. Heron Tower, 110 Bishopsgate, EC2; sushisamba.com
Brand new start...
Absolutely rounds up the best healthconscious restaurants the area has to offer. Bon santé!
THE FOLLY
BEST FOR: CALORIE CONTROL
This botany-themed restaurant is really geared towards those on a health-kick. The tape measure symbol tagged to some of the items on the menu denotes meals under 500 calories, but don’t be put off: the food is uncompromisingly good. You can max out on flavour (but not calories) by ordering your burgers carb-free or sticking to one of the delicious skinny cocktails. The Folly is not about dieting; the menu is way too long and appetising for that – reading like a souped-up, particularly flavoursome diner. It’s almost impossible to choose between the likes of Maryland buttermilk chicken burger, tuna po-boy or a Californian hot smoked salmon salad. The schtick is that the option to eat healthily is there if you want it. Despite London’s most cultivated culinary exploits, sometimes it’s way too hard to find a decent salad – finally some Cali-style health-freak ingredients in the capital. Join The Folly this month for their ‘slim or sin’ offer, see web for details. 41 Gracechurch Street, EC3; thefollybar.co.uk 38

FOOD
OTTOLENGHI
BEST FOR: FRESH AND VARIED PRODUCE
Salads are usually a menu after-thought: either overpriced and insubstantial or huge with an overbearing mishmash of incompatible ingredients, swimming in sauce. Thankfully, Ottolenghi redresses the balance with a dedicated, mouth-watering, taste-therainbow array of buffet salads, flaunting extensive and unusual ingredients all bursting with natural goodness. Red quinoa, sesame seed rice and mashed yellow split peas with Tunisian corn salsa are just some of the flavours on offer – putting over-cooked spinach and blanched lettuce leaves to shame. Much of the veg comes chargrilled or roasted with a generous helping of nuts. The Ottolenghi book Plenty has become something of a modern kitchen bible; the follow-up, Jerusalem, looks set to achieve the same ubiquity. Salads need never be boring again. 287 Upper Street, N1; ottolenghi.co.uk
THE GATE
BEST FOR: VEGGIE FINE DINING
The abundant use of different vegetables means you’ll get a good stab at your five-aday at The Gate. The owners of the legendary Hammersmith restaurant (frequently lauded as London’s best) brought their own brand of nutritious dishes to Islington last year and the menu reads like a health-foodie’s heaven – expect high-energy ingredients and some wham-bam combos (courgette flowers, wasabi potato cake, confit artichoke salad, aubergine teriyaki). There are also vegan and gluten-free options as well as brunch and mezze menus if you’re looking for a lighter lunch. There’s really no excuse now for a fast food blowout; golden food begone, colourful grub is on our new healthy agenda. 370 St John Street, EC1; thegaterestaurants.com

Proud Cabaret City
With a new head chef on board, the traditional dishes at Proud City Cabaret’s supper club have been given a modern twist. Starters of parsnip, honey and coconut soup with truffle oil and crushed hazelnuts, pig’s cheek and chorizo ravioli sit alongside classic mains like pan-fried fillet of sea-bream and roasted chicken breast. The desserts are as equally tantalising, with big flavours like brioche bread and butter pudding with orange zest and Madagascan vanilla or chocolate crème brûlée with crystalised popping candy topping the menu. DISCO BISTRO
Pipsdish Why do we love this pop-up? All the
activity takes place behind the red doors of an old Citroën garage brimming with original 1950s features like car ramps, a vaulted ceiling and concrete oil pits. The space is decked out with founder, food writer and cook Philip Dundas’ vintage furniture and crockery – and Dundas has even launched the ‘Kitchen Table Project’ with some of the proceeds from the pop-up feeding groups of elderly locals for free. We commend you, kind sir! 133B Upper Street, N1; pipsdish.co.uk
An exciting new culinary residency from itinerant chef Carl Clarke, Disco Bistro EC4 makes its home at The Rising Sun (along the Dickensian alleyway fabled as the meeting spot of Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators) until April. The restaurant offers the full dining experience albeit with ‘proper boozer’ roots, and is Clarke’s first solo project since previous pop-up hits the Rock Lobsta Bar, Thomas Keller spoof The English Launderette and the punk jubilee-inspired God Save the Clam. At Disco Bistro EC4, a guest chef will take the reins of a monthly Saturday dinner service, ensuring an ongoing series of new experiences, while the main dining room has been designed with the aid of British artist and lighting designer Alex Randall, of surrealist light installation and taxidermy fame. The second, smaller
room is curated by Lassco, London’s premier architectural salvage company, who have modelled the room on a quirky Georgian pantry. Vintage tables and reclaimed Routemaster bus chairs add to the humorous, fun and punk-infused theme. The Rising Sun, 61 Carter Lane, EC4; discobistroec4.co.uk
The Wallace Collection Renowned restaurateur Oliver Peyton (of Peyton and Byrne fame) has
taken budding chef Ivan Simeoli under his wing for a new food venture. Simeoli is to head up The Wallace Restaurant, having moved over from Massimo Bottura’s three Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana in Italy. Guests are invited to enjoy seasonal game in the restaurant’s breathtaking atrium, lush with plants and dotted with works of sculpture. A truly unique experience - and the excellent staff definitely know their snipe from their woodcock. Hertford House, Manchester Square, W1; wallacecollection.org 41

Mantra Crackling good grub What’s the deal? A truly beautiful pub, done out in rustic style with farmhouse tables. The main attraction is the food (meat straight from the farm, butchered, cured and smoked on site, fish straight from the boat) but with a very long wine and beer list, it’s also a decent urban-country watering-hole in which to sink a pint or two. Why should you go? The original pub structure was built in the mid-1800s on what were once fields used by farmers to rest their livestock before they were sent to Smithfield’s Meat Market. A little dose of history with your tipple of choice.

ollar Grills and Martinis presides over a busy corner of Exmouth Market, a foodie-favoured part of Clerkenwell perfectly situated between the hipster hotbed of East London and the West End. The restaurant itself is all Vegas bling, brimming with sumptuous velvet reds, gleaming golds and glossy blacks. The lighting is splendidly moody, the chandeliers casting a dim glow over the Americana on the walls. The 1964 Audrey Hepburn vehicle Paris When It Sizzles plays discreetly in the background, and the overall effect is a fun, relaxed atmosphere with a buzzy clientele comprised of everything from pretty young guys and dolls to families and curious tourists. But what about the chow? Well, as its name suggests, Dollar is all grill… so think meat, meat, meat. Vegetarians are catered for – but they’re not the target audience. Burgers are your best bet and there’s a fine selection on offer, from classics involving bacon and cheese to the more adventurous Lucy Lucy, which comes with quince jelly, or the Bellagio, which features Parma ham, spinach, mozzarella and chilli jam. All are served on a rich, glazed brioche bun. I plumped for the Wagyu burger, a classy cut of cattle served with Monterey Jack cheese
and white truffled mushrooms. My companion decided to sample a 20oz fillet steak - both were fantastic. The meat on offer is grain-fed USDAcertified prime beef hailing from Nebraska, and because of the open kitchen you can watch the steaks and patties sizzling and smoking from the comfort of your table. Cocktails are central to the dining experience, with Dollar proving once again that beef and booze make perfect bedfellows. There’s something for every taste, from wise guy and dame to average Joe, and friendly staff are on hand to guide you through the beguiling menu. Every beverage we sampled was delicious, but we were particularly fond of the signature Porn Star Martini - as well as the more classic Sazerac. A downstairs bar is home to a team of mixologists charged with creating these concoctions - and is a great place to continue the party after dinner. London and the burger seem to be well and truly smitten with each other at the moment, and a growing host of eateries are trying to carve out a niche for themselves in what’s obviously a crowded market. By outclassing cheesy chains and short-lived pop-ups alike, Dollar rises above the rabble – and provides a perfect night out.
right, airy and modern, West Hampstead’s Feng Sushi restaurant is a warming antidote to a cold and rainy Thursday night, the calming glimmer of its aquarium – not to mention the restorative effects of its sparkling sake – ensuring the atmosphere is cheery and welcoming. My companion and I are no strangers to the brand, having attended a Feng Sushi sushi-making class in the spring. Now was our chance to sit back, relax and sample a broad range of what Feng Sushi has to offer. The salads and edamame dishes are worth remarking upon – with the x-ray salad serving as a fine example of the restaurant’s flair for blending unusual combinations of marvellously fresh ingredients - think peppers, pomegranate, edamame, avocado and a spicy sauce with chives. The miso edamame, meanwhile, give new meaning to the term ‘moreish’, and the tender sashimi is cut wonderfully thick. There is no scrimping where portions are concerned – Feng Sushi really does represent excellent value for money in comparison to the scanty amounts that some other quality Japanese restaurants provide (at twice the price). And the food is great: our scallop and chilli kicked like a mule and the tempura were excellent, with the rock shrimp being the pick of the bunch. There are also lots of special dishes on the menu, which work well for sharing and through which we were guided with enthusiasm and expertise by our waiter. All the fish is sustainably sourced, and the intimate surroundings are more than conducive to conversation. My companion and I stayed late into the evening, enjoying the sake a little too much, perhaps – but eventually stepping out into the night full of healthy and invigorating food. 1 Adelaide Road, NW3; fengsushi.co.uk

Tell us about Luna & Curious; what’s the company’s background? Luna & Curious was established in 2006 as a collectively run store where a group of designers could sell their own work. We now sell over forty different designers and specialise in British manufacture. The store is run by ceramic designers Polly George, Kaoru Parry of welovekaoru and jewellery designer Rheanna Lingham. The trio now work on joint design projects. Where do you source the ‘curios’ that make up the shop? In many different places; we sell designers that don’t sell anywhere else and produce work as a hobby. We have many people approach us, but we explore exhibitions and scour blogs to find exciting products. What, in your opinion, constitutes ‘good design’? Something that has been fully thought through from beginning to end. Where the product is made is extremely important, that the product is made in a place that is highly skilled, not just the cheapest. Good design is elusive, not one thing; it comes together when every small part is right. How important to you was having a gallery space in the boutique? It was a really fun way to create a buzz and introduce more people to our store on Calvert Avenue. We thrive on collaboration and we now have a full time resident in our gallery, Barry the
Barber. Barry has a beautiful old-fashioned space, offering traditional barber services. Who designed the shop floor? It was a collaborative process; we did all the work ourselves with great help from husbands, parents and friends. The fittings were generally found or donated and the space has grown out of this ethos. The umbrella light fittings were the brainchild of our art director friend Rob Nichols. What are your bestselling products? Our Mermaid Tail Sleeping Bag by The Miniature Knit Shop, Tower Bridge Monumini by Another Studio, Beetle Wing Necklace by Rheanna Lingham. Also our Londow Willow plate by welovekaoru, Salt & Pepper Pigs Trotters by Luna & Curious, Cresshead by Polly George and Gold Handcuffed Bear by Momocreatura.
the shop one sunny Sunday afternoon. Our design ethos is similar; we both have a flavour of British eccentricity! That led to us designing the bespoke crockery for the Mad Hatter’s afternoon tea. What other interesting projects have you been involved with? We also run Semi Automatic at St Martins Lane, a giant vending machine in The Sanderson’s sister hotel. What does the future hold for the company? More Luna & Curious lines, jewellery, hats and silk scarves, all made in the UK. 24-26 Calvert Avenue, E2; lunaandcurious.com
Why did you choose the Shoreditch location? We set up on Brick Lane as we all lived in the area. We needed bigger premises and as soon as we set our eyes on the beautiful Arnold Circus location, we knew we had found our new home. It is a magical part of East London. How did the collaboration with the Sanderson Boutique come about... The Sanderson invited us to open a boutique in the hotel after a staff member wandered into

ABSOLUTELY PROMOTION
Legal force Marilyn Stowe is one of the country’s leading divorce lawyers, and she’s a television personality too. Absolutely catches up with her to discuss justice, families and The Archers
Most divorce lawyers don’t end up on television. How did your stint on This Morning come about? I enjoy public speaking and have debated marriage at the Oxford Union. I have regularly appeared on provincial radio and TV over the years; but I’ve also done Richard and Judy and other national talk shows on TV. Sometimes the brief is tricky; I debated cohabitation with Baroness Deech on Radio 4 and the outcome of a Supreme Court case on BBC Breakfast. I’ve also handled PR as a solicitor on behalf of the Law Commission for reports on family law. ITV were looking for a very experienced family lawyer but also someone who was unafraid of the media who could explain things in a straightforward way. They called me out of the blue and interviewed me, and things went from there. Do you enjoy being on television? Yes I do, handling people’s problems is what I’m used to but I’ve very much enjoyed being in the studio and meeting celebrities and the people who run This Morning - who wouldn’t?! It’s a very professional outfit. You have also been involved in storylines for The Archers. Tell us about that. I was recommended to the scriptwriters of the series and asked to devise the nastiest divorce scenario I could think of for one
of the characters. So I had him running a private partnership with his girlfriend and hiving off business to it from his company, so depleting the company profits to reduce the payout to the wife. Then the girlfriend turned on him! I’ve also advised the scriptwriters on Coronation Street when they ran a storyline about Peter Barlow, who was an alcoholic father and the grandfather turned up to obtain custody of the child. I suggested it would be a good idea for them to reach agreement about the child, to demonstrate settling is better than litigating and they took my advice. You are known to have a strong sense of justice. When did you first notice it? Even before I qualified. I used to do voluntary work for the local CAB. In fact, that’s where I first spoke to my husband who I’d seen around the courts. He had gone along to do a voluntary session too. I worked in partnership with him for many years and we ran free legal clinics at all our offices. When I set up my own firm I continued this and I offer free legal advice on my blog, marilynstowe.co.uk which is currently getting over 32,000 visits per month. I also acted for Sally Clark on a pro bono basis and obtained the medical report that freed her from her imprisonment when she was wrongly convicted of the double murder of her baby sons.
Most divorce lawyers are male, but many clients are female. Is this an issue? I think there was a problem – not with clients but with the lawyers; they found me a bit too hot to handle! Today I would say there are easily as many women as men lawyers. How does working in family law impact on your own family? How do you find enough time for them? I always put my family first and still do so I was always around when my son was little and it was hard. However, now my son is a lawyer himself I am thinking of my firm first and growing and expanding it for posterity. You have been married yourself for 30 years. What advice can you give people on making marriage work? My husband and I are tolerant of each other and respectful of each other’s careers. We don’t compete; we have grown and developed together for our mutual benefit. We are also always able to laugh together. His very dry sense of humour has saved many potentially tricky situations between us! 8 Fulwood Place Gray’s Inn, WC1; stowefamilylaw.co.uk

ndy Court: Well, who would have thought five years ago that Hackney would become one of the most exciting areas in London? Now attracting high quality tenants looking to move into the area, including architects, music professionals, stylists and much more, we are seeing a dramatic change in culture. Small businesses are growing and a sense of character is developing which is why the area is in such high demand. London Fields, Broadway Market and Dalston Junction are just a few keys aspects which have helped develop and attract new walks of life to this ever changing environment. Since opening in Hackney Central three industrious years ago, our lettings office has grown into a leading agent in the area. We have a direct, professional and sincere approach to Lettings, which instils trust with our clients and offers value for money. Landlords do not come to us for a bargain; they simply come to us to get what they pay for. Although sometimes seen as an extension of Shoreditch, Hackney itself can only be described as on the up with its own distinct individuality lighting up the market our hunger to be successful is only increased. So, naturally I am genuinely excited about the prospects that the area has to offer and where it will be in another five years time. The market this year has been fruitful following on from the Olympics and has given us a great platform to build on.
Nick Karamanlis: It has been a long time coming but Hackney is finally getting the recognition it deserves. I began my Estate Agency career over a decade ago in neighbouring Bow and back then even I would turn a snobbish nose up at the less popular Hackney borough. Then after a short and painful stint in a slow-paced North London market I made my way over to E8 and never looked back. Hackney has become so popular so quickly that areas I used to physically drag people too just a few years back (namely anywhere outside of E8 or E9) are now the most sought after. Chatsworth Road in the heart of Lower Clapton seems to have a new delicatessen or coffee shop open up every week. The once party going ‘trendies’ of E8 who are now with young families are looking for a (slightly) quieter life where the primary schools are good and the properties a bit more affordable. It has been an excellent few years for Hackney and the most exciting area I have worked in. Asking prices are being smashed on a daily basis and you can be sure to have a surplus of applicants for any period property that briefly appears on the market. People from around the country and even internationally are hearing about this new trendy area through their siblings and are investing in their droves. Now in Hackney, I get a sense of that old East End community feel I used to experience in Bow and yet there is something more, something special, something... just something!
