fficially in the throes of winter, November is a month to embrace the cold and look forward to what’s to come. For me, it is a month of anticipation. The party season kicks off, Christmas is around the corner and a fresh start, marked by a new year, is imminent. To get you in full cold-weather mode, our fashion editor, Charlotte Adsett, has picked out the best winter pieces to keep you warm and looking stylish, on page 16 onwards, while our men’s fashion editor, Teo van den Broeke, has found the most stylish shirt jackets for the boys, on page 26. Chilly nights and winter cover ups mean that November is a month to indulge; flick to page 39 where we’ve eaten at East London’s hottest new restaurants, Taberna do Mercado and Wazen. Meanwhile, our brilliant

columnist Jane Parkinson shares wine pairings to keep you warm and sated on page 37. Struggling with the lack of vitamin D? Get holiday inspiration on page 52, where Apphia Michael discovers the best retreats in Singapore and Bali. In the wake of the much acclaimed film release of Macbeth, we speak to Hackney resident and all-round heart-throb, Michael Fassbender, on the challenges of acting and his love of London. Enjoy the issue and I’ll see you next month for some proper festive cheer! ◆

LIFE
Handsome, talented and charming; Michael Fassbender tells Absolutely what makes London’s most eligible bachelor tick Wo r d s K a r e n A n n e O v e r t o n
“I
f you can survive in London, you can survive anywhere.” Such is the wisdom of Michael Fassbender, who lives in the same Hackney flat he has been in since before he became a global superstar. But although London is very much his home, the 38-year-old doesn’t get to spend much time there due to a hectic schedule. Indeed, he was only in the capital for three months of the past year. “I don’t seem to be spending much time in any one place these days,” admits Fassbender. “But I find that strangely freeing. I just need to carry a few books, a motorcycle helmet, and I’m ready to go.” This is the life of one of Hollywood’s most successful actors as he flits from one film set to another, be it one of the recent X-Men blockbusters or one of his more arthouse forays like Terrence Malick’s upcoming endeavour Weightless. The Irish/German heartthrob seemed to appear out of nowhere as a fully formed Hollywood star, but Fassbender
paid his dues: growing up in County Kerry, Ireland, he moved to London to study at the notorious Drama Centre, known in theatre circles as the ‘Trauma Centre’ for its rigorous emotional and physical approach to acting. He dropped out and had several years of small TV and theatre roles including a stage version of Quentin Tarantino’s cult heist flick Reservoir Dogs, which he also produced and directed. But it was his turn as a young Spartan warrior in 300 that caught the attention of Hollywood and since then Fassbender’s rise has been swift, from playing IRA prisoner Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen’s Hunger, for which he won a British Independent Film Award for Best Actor, to the androgynous, Bowie-esque cyborg in Alien prequel Prometheus. And herein lies his secret to success: his ability to truly become his characters until there’s no trace of the original Fassbender left. In McQueen’s story of sex addiction, Shame, and later in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, he proved his versatility and willingness to transform completely still further.

XXXXXX ARTS & CULTURE / XXXXXXX / PROFILE and ridiculous – although it suits me!” “That’s what I love so much about This is typical of Fassbender, always acting – it’s the ability to submerge charming with the right balance of your ego into that of another person,” cockiness and humility. His appeal he explains. His devotion to his art is reminiscent of the Golden Age of is remarkable, from embarking on a Cinema: the style and rebelliousness of 600-calorie-a-day diet for Hunger to Steve McQueen, the sexual magnetism intense, muscle-building workouts for of Richard Taylor and the charm of his part as Roman soldier on-the-run in Cary Grant. Centurion. One of his toughest challenges though has been for his latest role as Shakespeare’s greatest anti-hero, Macbeth. Playing his wife is X-Men: Days of Gallic goddess Marion Future Past, 2014 Cotillard. The pair are stunning in the film: he as the rugged, ego-driven madman and Cotillard as his beguiling, beautiful and utterly insane wife. The real challenge though was getting his head around the tricky iambic pentameter. “That was one of the more difficult aspects of mastering the text,” he says. “I would keep repeating the lines over and over until I felt I had mastered the rhythm.” While the work ethic sees Macbeth, 2015, Fassbender giving himself over StudioCanal fully to these roles, what is it that attracts the darker ones? “I’m happy in my skin, and I never think about whether my characters are unsympathetic or tormented in terms of wanting to play those kinds of roles,” he says. “I look at every part as a way of expressing different aspects of their humanity. I have no vanity when it comes to that. “It was a rare privilege for me to be able to do a Shakespeare play and Macbeth happens to be my favourite of his works. Both the language itself and the character are so daunting that it’s almost as if you’re being dared to take it on. I like taking risks, and this was one I couldn’t pass up!” Some might think it odd that he is regarded as a sex symbol despite often being cast as the villain; slave owner Edwin Epps in 12 Years a Slave for example, or the young Magneto in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Macbeth, 2015, He goes on to joke that “the StudioCanal whole notion of being a sex symbol is a bit frightening

Yet for all the bravado, it seems fame has not changed Fassbender one bit. Indeed he once remarked that he thought the paparazzi were “there for someone else” when they first started appearing outside his house after his big break in Hunger. Ironic for an actor so often tasked with portraying egomaniacs. That’s one description often given to the man he’s playing next, arguably one of the biggest roles of his career in the eponymous biopic Steve Jobs, directed by Danny Boyle. Brandishing a rather battered looking iPhone 4, he says of the Apple entrepreneur: “I worship his intellect. He was an extraordinary man who changed the way we live on so many levels. I’m something of a caveman when it comes to technology, so it was quite an education for me to prepare for the film.” Fassbender is something of an adrenaline junkie. He’s well known for being a bit of a daredevil, often seen riding his motorbike or enjoying his other favourite pastime: gokarting. “Karting is an experience that is about as close to being in a Formula One race car that you can have without killing yourself!” he laughs. “I love the feeling of being so close to the ground – which is something you don’t get when you’re driving a car.” He was spotted at the Monaco Grand Prix this year with his then girlfriend, Alicia Vikander. For him it is more than just a thrill and more a survival tool to find control and calm in the intense chaos of Hollywood superstardom. “Being on a motorbike and concentrating while you’re going as fast as possible is also a strange form of relaxation,” he says. “Your mind just adapts to what you’re doing and you stop worrying about everything else that’s going on in your life.” As an actor he is wonderfully diverse and he lives by the mantra of taking one’s work seriously but never yourself. He jokes: “When I look at the roles I seem to be drawn to, you can see something of a recurring pattern at work. I don’t know whether directors or producers see me as a tortured soul. Maybe they do. I guess I have that tortured look on me. I think it’s time for me to start doing more comedies!” ◆

’m no great shakes when it comes to vintage shopping. Where others seem to happen upon sartorial gems almost by accident, after rifling racks and pillaging piles I always seem to come up emptyhanded. It was, therefore, with tentative hope that I entered the Clerkenwell Vintage Fashion Fair. I needn’t have worried. As I walked into Old Finsbury Town Hall on Rosebery Avenue, accompanied by my friend who, by her own admission, ‘hates shopping’, the first thing I noticed were the colours. Every shade, pattern and material you can imagine displayed on stalls, tables and rails. The second was the people: wonderfully dressed individuals, stallholders and shoppers alike, milled through the vaulted hall, stopping to examine clothes and accessories or just shoot the breeze with the sellers. After walking up to the first stall that caught my eye, I began to leaf aimlessly through a rack of coats until I saw it. A mint condition Burberry trench coat. But surely, it would cost the earth? I checked the label and not only was it well within my price range, it was also in my size. I spent the rest of my time trying to restrain myself from buying everything I saw. Each stall offered only the highest quality in a whole spectrum of prices – a return trip was planned on the spot. And my retail-challenged friend? Two coats, a hat and a jacket. As she put it, ‘Why can’t all shopping be like this?’ ◆

hough winter is pretty much here, sometimes a hefty winter coat can be a little too much for our temperate British climate. Enter the shirt jacket, more commonly known as ‘the shacket’. Effectively a shirt cut from thick, hard wearing fabrics such as boiled wool, gabardine, canvas or leather, shackets ruled the runways for Autumn Winter '15. At Prada, Miuccia’s boys wore theres buttoned up beneath mackintoshes. At Louis Vuitton, creative director Kim Jones cut his from cashmere and wool in neutral shades and teamed them with tonal outer layers. At Richard James the same jackets were cut from cotton canvas and worn with suit trousers. The effect is smart without being

dressy. These shackets can be worn over smart poplin shirts to the office; over chunky heavy knit jumpers at the weekend, or buttoned beneath heavier layers when the weather really comes in. Ultimately, though, the shacket is a neat expression of the current direction in menswear. Right now the general mood is one of understatement and casual comfort, it’s not about trussing up to the nines in a three piece suit, it’s about looking as sharp as possible with minimal fuss. Here are five of the best shirt jackets out there right now. u

aving flirted with boutique salons and celebrity hairdressers all over London, I have found somewhere to settle. The flagship Taylor Taylor salon in Spitalfields is by far my favourite place to wile away an afternoon getting my long hair cut ever so slightly shorter. The salon is beautifully decorated, with antique crystal chandeliers and mirrors, plus designer printed wallpapers and, most importantly, a fully stocked cocktail bar. Espresso martinis on tap, a jazz soundtrack humming in the background and a laid-back vibe makes Taylor Taylor feel more private members’ club than hairdresser. It’s not just aesthetics – their award-winning stylists and colour technicians are some of the best in the
IT feels more private MEMBERS’ CLUB than HAIRDRESSER industry, and with that comes an impressive client list of musicians and high-profile celebrities. Stylists are discreet despite their classy clientele, but given a little nudge they are more than happy to reveal their famous clients’ top styling tips. An hour or so passes and I leave Taylor Taylor with more than just a LOB (long bob) Ω my new blow-drying technique, which adds volume to my straight hair, has revolutionised my morning routine. ◆

ith the earthiness of chestnuts and the richness of pastry there’s no better a grape match than Chardonnay with this recipe, preferably one with a hint of oak (but not dominated by oak). This Chilean version is seriously classy with gentle buttered pastry flavours and a good freshness to cut through the rich tart filling. ◆ Randolfi Price Los Patricios Chardonnay £16.95, Berry Bros & Rudd, bbr.com

WITH BELLS ON
MOULES MARINIÈRE
classic dish that’s packed with flavour, the creamy garlic sauce A plays just as important a role as the juicy fresh mussels. Riesling from Alsace is a winning match because it’s usually dry as a bone but has a real depth to the honeyed flavour, which is sublime with a garlic and cream combination, plus dry Riesling is generally a useful seafood wine in any case. ◆ Cave de Hunawihr Riesling Vieilles Vignes 2013, £12.99, Majestic, majestic.co.uk
CLEMENTINE CAKE
henever the tang of orange is in a recipe, savoury or sweet, I always think a wine with a distinct orange flavour makes the best pairing. Tuscany’s celebrated sweet wine Vin Santo – here made with Trebbiano grapes – is the perfect answer because it’s packed with marmalade lusciousness and this one is so intense and long lasting it really hones in on the cake’s signature flavour. ◆ Vignamaggio Vin Santo del Chianti Classico 2008, £21.50 Corney & Barrow, corneyandbarrow.com

Taberna do Mercado Absolutely discovers Nuno Mendes’ newest culinary venture Wo r d s r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e
N
estled in Old Spitalfields Market, Taberna do Mercado is feeding London’s hungry with some of the best Portuguese tapas in town. Nuno Mendes, who is most famous for his celebrity behemoth Chiltern Firehouse, has gone down a different path for this new venture. The restaurant, in all its simplicity and modesty, highlights the breadth of Mendes’ skills. Launched in partnership with Antonio Galapito, the ethos of the restaurant is to properly represent the cuisine of their home country, Portugal. While my interest in Chiltern Firehouse certainly lapsed after the millionth photo of a disheveled Lindsay Lohan falling out of the restaurant was splashed across the front page of the Metro, I hadn’t completely lost hope. I went to Taberna do Mercado optimistic, and Mendes and Galapito certainly didn’t disappoint. We were treated to a glass of Espumante (the Portuguese version of Cava) to start,
along with some runner bean fritters served with bulhao Ω a type of clam and coriander sauce. A surpising highlight of the meal, the combination of paper-thin batter, crispy beans and saline dip was excellent. Next came small plates of copita (air dried acorn fed black pig loin), quinta dp carapinhal (a medium hard sheep’s milk), a portion of the house tinned fish we went for the monkfish cheeks, which were so tender and well-seasoned we ordered another portion. We also braved the special of percebes, which are a rare Portuguese speciality of goose barnacles, that came simply dressed with a squeeze of lemon, and tasted far better than they looked (imagine dinosaur feet). We shared a Portuguese custard tart to finish (probably the best I’ve ever tasted) and I left wondering how soon before I can go back again. Mendes, you’ve won me over. ◆

authentic’ is bandied around a lot – too much – when it comes to international cuisine. However this just-opened eatery is well deserving of this weighty title. The cosy Japanese-neighbourhood-restaurant-inKing’s-Cross honours its original inspiration, with sublime culinary creations by ex-Kouzu head chef, Toshimasa Tanahashi, including spicy tuna tartare (delicately sweet bites of tangy tuna), agedashi tofu (Wazen’s version with wonton-wrapped tofu cubes covered in an umami-imbued glaze) and chicken kakinotane: utterly addictive strips of succulent chicken crumbed in senbei, or soy-flavoured rice crisp. The tart wazen salad is refreshing owing to its yuzu dressing and roasted and golden beetroot sprinkled with edamame and pomegranate, meanwhile the supreme-grade sashimi, skilfully cut by Wazen's samurais, mimics that of its home country. Chicken nanban sees deep fried chicken doused in nanban (Japanese vinegar ) and creamy tartare sauce, where the whole meal is best complemented by a kikizake flight of rare sakes – one especially great combination comprising a dry sohomare karakuchi, a fruity tedorigawa Iki na Onna, and a rich dewazakura omachi. After finishing the meal with desserts of matcha chiffon cake (as light and fluffy as its name implies) and a coffee-soaked matcha tiramisu, the only conclusion you can reach about Wazen is that it is irrefutably, 100%, the genuine article. ◆

Island Life
A holy trinity of truly outstanding resorts to retreat away from it all in Bali and Singapore Wo r d s A p p h i a M i c h a e l
AMANDARI Ubud, Bali
THE HOTEL
Y
ou know you’ve entered the realm of the sublime when you check in at an Aman hotel. And Amandari, set among verdant fields of green rice terraces close to Bali’s spiritual and cultural heart of Ubud, is no exception. Chanelling a very different feel to the beach resorts that most people associate with the island, this inland retreat is an enchanted wonderland filled with lush green flora and fauna. Airy communal areas and 30 thatched villas are connected through an artery of pebbled walkways and beautifully landscaped grounds adorned with shrines and ponds. Our experience begins on touchdown at Denpasar airport, where a representative of the hotel meets us off the plane and fast-tracks us through security queues into a waiting car. After an hour’s drive through the island’s

busy streets, we turn off at a discreet entrance, making our way down a long foliage-lined driveway and into a charming walled Balinese village. Following a warm greeting by friendly staff, we are whisked off to our villa. The whole process is seamless and stress-free from start to finish. Because service is paramount at Amandari: the perks of your stay include a return car service into Ubud whenever the mood strikes, and (parents, take note) four hours babysitting per day. The resort is very much grounded in its Balinese roots and its surrounding community too – local schoolchildren come here to practice Balinese dance (you might be lucky enough to catch a performance one evening during the week), and villagers use the resort’s grounds for their daily tasks.

and teak fixtures made it feel natural and sympathetic to traditional Balinese design. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a private patio and generous private swimming pool. Televisions aren’t something you’ll find at Amandari, not that you’ll even notice, with the high-walled outdoor sunken marble bath adjoining the bathroom to sink into, or the view of the rice paddies below to enjoy. Here, it’s not only the sights and sounds, but also the smells that make for a complete sensory takeover - bamboo-framed roofs feature alang-alang grass thatching that gives off a gently rustic,

urrounded by a lotus pond, the spa is accessed through a winding stone walkway and is equipped with two open-air treatment bales, a beauty room, sauna and marble steam room. I visit the spa just as the sun is setting, and my pleasant walk is enhanced with the sight of candles lining the path and the sound of haunting Balinese music from one of the resort’s weekly dance performances taking place back at the open-air lobby. Treatments – including my detoxing Zone Facial Massage – make use of local Balinese ingredients and range from holistic facials to traditional Indonesian treatments and a selection of massages and scrubs. The resort also runs

BULGARI Uluwatu, Bali
THE HOTEL
E
ven the most hardened traveller couldn’t climb the steps of Bulgari Bali’s breathtaking open-air reception pavilion without gawping at the panoramic view of the Indian Ocean. Perched on a cliff more than 150 metres above sea level, the very seductive, smouldering Bulgari resort resides on the island’s far southwestern tip near Uluwatu. Designed by famed Italian architect Antonio Citterio, the resort is a beautiful marriage of contemporary Italian and Balinese design. Here, dark exotic woods and hand-cut volcanic stones intermingle as effortlessly as the resort’s stunning cliff-edge infinity pool does with the ocean’s horizon. Which, by the way, is unmissable – from the restaurants to the villas to the pool, ocean views are everywhere. Whether it's solitude or socialising you're after, the resort balances both options with aplomb - you could spend an entire stay holed up in your very plush villa, but if seeing and being seen is your thing, then throw on your finest resort chic and head to the pool and adjoining lounge bar to be at the heart of it all.
THE ROOM
T
here are no rooms at this resort, only villas, all with ocean views and plunge pools. And although villas are built close to each other, we feel a remarkable sense of privacy in ours, thanks to an intelligent design feature which encloses a very spacious outdoor living room and pool area within a highwalled lush garden setting. Inside, we love
the dramatically dark bathroom with its black Terrazzo floor, glass walls and inviting sunken bathtub, which takes centre stage. As standard, leisure concierges are on hand to help with activities like market tours and day trips to neighbouring islands. But don’t pack too much in – the area is known for its stunning sunsets, so you’ll want to be sitting comfortably on the villa patio, aperitif in hand, to witness the magical sight.
THE SPA
A
An imposing antique Joglo house, transported all the way from Central Java, signals your arrival at the spa’s reception. Inside, a breezy courtyard with a serene pond and walkway lead to an open-air relaxation lounge, yoga pavilion and swimming pool. With its mesmerising unspoilt ocean views, my semi-al-fresco

t doesn’t get any fresher than the winning combination of grilled seafood and a bracing ocean breeze at beach restaurant La Spiaggia, located under the cliff and charmingly accessed via a funicular railway. The resort’s all-day dining space, The Sankar, has prime position on a cliff edge and window seats overlook the island’s shores, so make sure you arrive early at breakfast. Naturally, given the Bulgari brand heritage, there’s also an Italian restaurant. Open only for dinner, Il Ristorante, with its pretty open air pavilions and ornamental lake, offers a fine dining experience. We were blown away by the elegant degustation dinner. Opt for the wine pairing menu option and request a table at the front, which affords a stunning view of the surrounding seascape. ◆

that springs to mind when you think of Singapore, the small but incredibly busy South-East Asian island city, whose imposing tower blocks and eternal hustle and bustle never seem to end. But venture ten minutes beyond the mainland and you’ll find Capella, a spacious and peaceful resort on the island of Sentosa, where roaming peacocks, sweeping views of the South China Sea and beautifully landscaped grounds make for a heady recipe for pure holiday bliss. Set amid 30 acres of tropical rainforest, the Foster + Partners-designed resort is the perfect blend of old and new: two former 19th Century British Army barracks are flanked by contemporary curved structures that flow with the hillside. Capella is elegant, chic and eager to please – before your stay a personal assistant contacts you to to see if they can help personalise your time here, saving your energy for those all-important decisions such as which one of the resort’s three cascading pools to sunbathe by.

pace is definitely not an issue at Capella and rooms, which start at 77 sq ft, are some of the most generous in the city. We stay in a luxuriously appointed Garden Villa, a one bedroom double-height villa with its own private plunge pool and outdoor shower – perfect, if you can ever drag yourself out of the kingsize bed or stop twirling around in your walk-in wardrobe. Aesop products furnish the bathrooms and in-room facilities include a Nespresso machine, mini bar with free soft drinks, BOSE entertainment system and a futuristic touch-screen control panel for lighting, drapes and temperature.

antonese fine dining restaurant Cassia, designed by famed interior designer Andre Fu, is an intimate space that sits within the hotel’s colonial building and is well worth a visit for its refined take on haute Cantonese cuisine. We sample its exquisite weekend dim sum brunch and are blown away with its quality. Breakfast is taken at the seafront-facing Knolls restaurant, which transforms into a Mediterranean-inspired dining experience for lunch and dinner. And if you can pry yourself away from the pool, the outdoor daybeds at Cuban-inspired Bob’s Bar are the only place to be in the evening. ◆

o you tell yourself each year you’ll be better prepared for when Christmas comes back around? This year make your Christmas sparkle with a little help from the experts at Finchley Road’s O2 Centre. Boasting some of the biggest brands, all in one convenient location, your festive season will be even merrier after a trip to the O2 Centre. u
IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS
Before you start thinking about the decorations, get your home in order. Organise the main living spaces and bring down last year’s adornments from the attic. Look through them to decide which ones you’ll use, and what you’d like to buy. Tip: Don’t forget the stockings! Gorgeous, arty stockings from Paperchase (£7.50 each) will look great on any mantelpiece.
64 19/10/2015 11:23
ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION CRACK IT OUT
TANTALISING TREE
The tree should be the first thing you consider. Be sure to place it in a spacious, accessible area to be enjoyed by everyone. Embellish with decorations that complement the home – monochrome, woodland creatures and gold are all big trends this year. Remember: there is no right way to decorate your tree; visitors will enjoy seeing your personal touches. Tip: These Habitat rattan tree baubles (£8 for the three) instantly add rustic luxury.
Much of the Christmas period is spent dining with family and friends, and a festive meal is never complete without a cracker joke and hat. Tip: Why not try Paperchase’s six-pack of ombré stag crackers (£13) for a different table theme this year?
DECORATING both inside and out WILL TRANSFORM your home into a WINTER WONDERLAND
ALL WRAPPED UP
There’s nothing more frustrating than sitting down to wrap your gifts and finding out you don’t have enough paper, bows, or ribbon. So stock up, and don’t be afraid to move away from traditional robin and reindeer designs. Tip: We love Oliver Bonas’ jazzy wrapping papers (right) at £1.95 a roll.
SEND IT WITH LOVE
Each year we receive a multitude of cards in the post, so make sure they don’t go to waste. Christmas cards can be an excellent, low-cost way to decorate the home. Attach them to ribbons and hang, or dot them across the house. Tip: We love these reindeer cards from Sainsbury’s. At only £2.50 for a pack of 12, send a bit of love this Christmas and remind your friends and family that you’re thinking of them.
LIGHT UP
Lights are not just for the tree; they create a feeling of warmth and atmosphere. Decorating both inside and out will transform your home into a winter wonderland that is sure to impress. Tip: Choose a ‘warm’ coloured glow to avoid that frosty feeling inside on cold winter nights. Habitat’s multi-coloured LED Garland (£25) oozes festivity and is a timeless accent.
ME TIME
After all that planning and organisation, don’t forget to take time to relax. Pamper yourself with a massage or facial at Virgin Active Health Club and Spa, or a luxurious hair treatment at Gro Salon Hampstead. If you book one of Gro’s blow-dry services before 1 January 2016, you will receive a complimentary hair treatment worth £20 – simply quote ‘O2’ when booking. Tip: If you’re stuck for present ideas, treat the special person in your life to a Gro or Virgin Active Health Club and Spa gift voucher.
COME DINE With 14 eateries, cafes and grab-and-go restaurants all under one roof, the O2 Centre is the

perfect destination to eat and relax over Christmas. Our larger restaurants such as Rossopomodoro, Wagamama, Frankie and Benny’s and Zizzi are perfect options for parties, offering delicious winter menus. Our smaller, more intimate eateries, such as Falafel City, Apostrophe and YO! Sushi are great for a quick catch-up. Or, if you’re in a hurry while shopping, why not head to Tortellini Cup or YooMoo? Tip: Book quickly to avoid disappointment. Reservations for large groups or work Christmas parties are in high demand, and venues often require bookings to be made weeks in advance. LEGAL UPDATE FOR LANDLORDS uite a few legal changes have been made recently so if you’re a landlord you need to have a little read and understand what’s changed From 1 October it became a legal requirement for smoke alarms to be fitted on every level in all rental properties. You can just go out and buy the battery operated ones and fit one on every story of your rental property. CO2 detectors now have to be fitted in rooms which use solid fuel. So, while they would be needed in rooms that have open fires, they are not needed for gas appliances. In other news we at BlakeStanley have just opened our third office, it is based on Balls Pond Road in N1 and is a fabulous space. One of our directors Nick Robinson is now based here along with Matthew from sales and our property management team. We are pleased with our location as we are hoping to catch the part of the market who are just out of reach for Islington and Stoke Newington agents. We have already heard from many of our new landlords that they want a local agent with local knowledge, which is just what we are. u Blake Stanley 020 7254 7554; blakestanley.co.uk

p to the age of 16 I wanted to play for Arsenal, but unfortunately, like most kids, the dream remained just that. After my A-Levels, I toyed with the idea of architecture or finance and ended up pursuing the latter via the University of Brighton, followed by professional exams in accountancy in London. While pursuing a career in accountancy, I worked with many estate agents, landlords and property developers, which quickly saw my interest turn to the property sector. This interest happened to coincide with one of my best friends, and now business partner, Ari Theodorou, who then convinced me to start an estate agency with him. The idea to go into business together was originally conceived at the old Highbury Stadium, as we have been going to Arsenal together now for over 25 years. Having previously worked in the area, we felt it
ANTHONY PEPE IS COMING TO HIGHBURY AT A VERY EXCITING TIME, AS THE LOCATION IS REALLY UP ‘N’ COMING was a great decision to open our third office in Highbury this month. Although it’s only been open for a short time, my staff and I, all of whom live locally, have a wealth of experience in this area, and we believe that this is vital to the success of the office. I’ve always loved Islington and I am certainly a bit of a foodie, so it’s great to be able to pop in to the huge choice of great restaurants in Highbury and Upper Street. In fact, it seems I’m finding the excuse to have “business lunches” more than ever! The properties we offer at the new Anthony Pepe office are similar to what we are already providing in our Green Lanes, Harringay office, with
beautiful Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian properties on our books. Many of our clients in Harringay are looking in Highbury now and there seems to be great synergy between the offices. I would even suggest that Harringay will be very much like Highbury in 5-10 years’ time, particularly in terms of cost and lifestyle. Anthony Pepe is coming to Highbury at a very exciting time, and this is easily noticeable by way of all the lovely new cafés, delicatessens, cheese shops and seafood bars that are opening in the area, certifying the location as really up ‘n’ coming. Although prices have shot up already over the last three years, we can see the area remaining one of the main hotspots in London, especially for buy-to-let investors. Transport links are excellent; commuters can easily get into central London, but still maintain that lovely village feel associated with Highbury Barn or Highbury Fields, which are also great places to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon. u

n this situation, the seller’s personal representatives are bound to complete the contract. The trouble is that they can’t actually do this until the grant of representation has been issued. If completion doesn’t take place on the contractually agreed date, then a breach of contract would have taken place and damages will be available to the innocent party. In these circumstances, your solicitor could have a discussion with the deceased’s elective. They can then find out whether it would be possible to postpone the completion date until the grant of the representation has been obtained. It is also possible for an expedited grant of representation to be issued in the case of emergency and, as the deceased’s estate may be open to a claim for damages, it is likely that the Probate Registry will help turn around

an expedited application. If the estate is likely to be liable for inheritance tax, the consent of HMRC will need to be obtained before an application for an expedited grant is made. This is because they will need to agree to postpone the payment of inheritance tax. If you have to vacate your existing property, the executors could also allow you to occupy the property pending formal completion. You might be required to pay a licence fee which could then be offset against any compensation payable by the personal representatives for late completion. So in summary, the death of the seller in this situation (after the exchange of contracts but before the completion) does not affect the validity of the contract. The responsibility simply passes to the deceased’s representatives, who are legally obliged to complete. u
