This month, Lisa Byrne will not be gazing longingly at her Valentine, but towards the Yorkshire night skies

h, St Valentine’s Day, a date to celebrate a secret passion by sending an anonymous, handmade card, perhaps containing a self-penned romantic sonnet, that will hopefully lead the subject of your unrequited amour to fall deeply in love. Oh, if only this was the case. With the heady worship for the modern god of consumerism, nowadays Valentine’s is celebrated by receiving a giant Hallmark card, being presented with an overpriced, wilting bunch of red roses, and sitting in a restaurant packed to the rafters with couples barely speaking, apart from when attempting to take the perfect faux loved up Instagram image in a quest for ‘likes’. You may gather that I’m not a huge fan of this date. I believe that if you’re in a joyful and healthy relationship, every day should be Valentine’s Day – not just 14 February. I’m not sure St Valentine would have been thrilled to have his name forever connected to heady commercialism as he was being stoned and then beheaded

THIS IS HOW TO SPEND VALENTINE'S DAY

by Emperor Claudius on 14 February 269 AD. The priest had signed his final letter to his adored friend, the daughter of Claudius ‘from your valentine’, sparking the tradition of sending anonymous love notes on this date. Having been the partner of a few Yorkshiremen – all who were the epitome of the saying, ‘a Yorkshireman is a Scotsman with the generosity squeezed out of him’ - I have never been showered with gifts on this date. Instead, a romantic dinner was always accompanied by a meal for two voucher and the Morrison cut-price aisle was their idea of Mecca for cheap red roses. If you wish to forgo the tasteless treadmill of tat on Valentine’s, then the world-famous Yorkshire Dales is the perfect antidote when it hosts the enchanting and thoroughly romantic Dark Skies Festival. Taking place from 9-25 February, it showcases the Dales’ stunning skyline which is magically free from light pollution. Stargazers will adore the Planet Trail at Aysgarth Falls, where you can learn fun facts about the planets and star constellations in our solar system, while romantics will love taking an enchanting journey through the cosmos at the immersive evening, Broughton at Night. This event includes supper at its bespoke Fire Temple and guided stargazing led by expect astronomer Chris Higgins from Lime Tree Observatory. Magnificent Broughton, near Skipton, is the perfect place to spend a passionately romantic evening spotting ancient celestial constellations. The perfect antithesis to falling down the black hole of a vulgar Valentine’s Day.

The National Theatre and Various Productions have announced that Sheffield Theatres’ smashhit production, Standing at the Sky’s Edge, has been awarded the internationally recognised ‘Made in Sheffield’ accolade ahead of it making its West End premiere at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London from 8 February 2024. Originally created to protect the city’s unique reputation for world leading manufacturing, this is the ﬁrst time a theatre production has received this registered trademark. ALIEN Yorkshire-born Kieran Hodgson talks to Absolutely about trying to fit in, Holmfirth and why he’s making a musical about Liz Truss By REBECCA PITCAIRN

ieran Hodgson may well not speak with a Yorkshire accent, having lived in ‘The South’ for over a decade, but his roots and likeably friendly manner are unashamedly northern. “I’ve become one of those horrible placeless people, who wanders around putting onto their Yorkshire roots and trying to make use of it professionally, but who’s not really a proper Yorkshireman anymore,” says the 35-year-old comedian apologetically. Kieran was born and raised in Holmfirth, the Kirklees’ town made famous by the long-running TV show Last of the Summer Wine and a place which, he tells me, he then considered the centre of the universe. “It was such an idyllic part of the world to grow up in and I had access to absolutely everything,” he says. “I was a very outdoorsy child, and from the ages of five to 18 I was in the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers, so was always mountain biking, hiking, building dams and that sort of thing. But Holmfirth is sort of equidistant between Leeds,

Manchester and Sheffield, so we felt that culture was always right on the doorstep. I feel like a bit of a fool for having left, to be honest.” Kieran was 18 when he said farewell to humble Holmfirth and went south, first to study at Oxford and then to London, in search of the bright lights of the big city and to pursue his dream of acting. “I’ve wanted to be an actor since I was about eight or nine-years-old,” says Kieran, who attended Holmfirth High School. “I grew up watching Blackadder, Red Dwarf and The Fast Show with Harry Enfield and I would enter the school talent show doing impressions of my teachers and Tony Blair. I remember thinking at the time that perhaps there might be some talent scouts from TV watching and that might be my big break. It certainly wasn’t, but I won the show in Year 7 and Year 11, and I took it as a sign from the universe that this was the kind of thing that I would be good at doing.” While down south, Kieran did become an actor and played small parts on TV shows like Downton Abbey, Jonathan’s Creek and Siblings, as well as films like Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa and The Dad’s Army Story.

But much of his notoriety has come from his comedy writing. In 2014 his debut live stand-up show, French Exchange, was nominated by The Times as one of the top five of the Free Fringe that year, while his three follow-up shows – Lance, Maestro and 75, which tackled the subjects of the Tour de France, classical music and Britain’s relationship with Europe respectively – were all nominated for the festival’s Best Comedy Show award. And while Kieran’s impressions might have gone somewhat under the radar when he was a teenager, the witty multicharacter story-telling sketches based on shows such as The Crown, Line of Duty and Happy Valley, which he started to post on social media during the first coronavirus lockdown, have gone viral. “I do them just for fun really and to remind the world that I exist,” he jokes. “It’s funny, you can work incredibly hard for 18 months to put together a live show and then tour it around and it might be seen by a few thousand people, and that’s lovely. But you can make a video in your living room in an afternoon and by evening it will have been

seen by hundreds of thousands of people. It’s just one of the strange paradoxes of the current entertainment business.” 2020 was also the year Kieran was cast as Gordon in Scottish BBC sitcom, Two Doors Down, which saw him being thrust back up north, albeit hurdling his Yorkshire hometown and landing in Glasgow. He has spent the last three years settling into the city’s fashionable West End, building a new life and trying to fit in. It is these experiences of living in yet another ‘foreign’ climate that inspired Kieran, who has also starred in major films such as comedy mystery See How They Run and superhero action movie, The Flash, to write his latest live show, Big In Scotland. In the show, which was nominated for Best Comedy Show at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, he talks about his journey of discovery as a not-quite immigrant in a not-quite different country. He learns Gaelic (a bit), climbs Munros (a few) and tries to figure out if he is now obliged to give ill-informed opinions about independence to English members of his family. “A lot of the time, when we move to a new place, we try to become a new person, don’t we? We try to leave behind all the bad aspects of ourselves and become a new perfect version,” he says. “And so, in the show, I make a joke of the fact that all the bad aspects of my personality are the English ones. Therefore, in order to become a better person, I need to become more Scottish. It’s a little fish out of water tale, a journey through trying to be Scottish and failing, but having fun along the way.” Kieran has never been afraid of politics or the risqué. He wrote and starred in Channel 4 spoof, Prince Andrew: The Musical, and is currently writing another musical about Liz Truss. “I just thought it would be nice before the next election to look back on the thrills and

“Tartan, shortbread and bagpipes are things most Scots shudder over” spills that this particular Parliament has brought us, and no period gave us more thrills or spills than the 45 days of the Liz Truss premiership,” Kieran explains. “As grim as the economic impact has been for some people I do think that, as a story, it is so ludicrous and silly that it would lend itself quite neatly to musical treatments and it would be a good chance for me to flex my musical muscles.” As controversial as some of his content might be, Big In Scotland is not, Kieran says, about attacking the Scots and, thankfully, has been received well by his new Scottish comrades. “I’m pleased that it seems to have passed the Scotland test,” he laughs. “I do make quite a few cheeky – some would say rude – jokes about the Scots and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get away with it or people would walk out and not get it, but they have proven to have a fantastic sense of humour about themselves. I think the way to sneak in some very cheeky jokes about Scotland and the Scots is to not tackle them head on and be confrontational about it,

but rather to smother them with compliments – some of which aren’t totally justified. I do want to continue living here for some time, so having a show that completely berated the Scots might not have been advisable.” I wonder, after three years of living in Glasgow and travelling through Scotland by way of research for the show, what’s been the biggest lesson Kieran has learned? “That Scotland is not one country and that there is not one version of Scottishness,” he says. “A lot of the things we think of as universally Scottish are things that a lot of Scots really don’t like. Tartan, shortbread, bagpipes are all things most Scots cringe and shudder over. It’s also very varied geographically. I live in Glasgow, and I’ve found people in Aberdeen or the Highlands seem more similar to people in London than Glasgow. There are real differences in perspectives. was in the re-make of the classic film The Railway Children. How did you enjoy playing Thomas, the grandson of Jenny Agutter’s character? A Thomas is a proper Yorkshire lad. He’s quite similar to me – he stays out of trouble, keeps himself to himself. When the new kids arrive, he shows them the Yorkshire way of life; takes them collecting eggs for breakfast and exploring the countryside. Thomas becomes more independent as it goes on, it’s a big part and it was great to play him and develop his character. Jenny Agutter, Sheridan Smith and Tom Courtenay are all legends, so cool to be around. Tom plays my uncle; I had brilliant scenes with him. Jenny told me lots about making the original film and her experiences as a young actor. Sheridan, who plays Thomas’s mum, was fantastic – there are a few scenes where she had to cry, and she just did it straight away. I learn a lot from watching actors like that at work. Q Your new film ‘Jackdaw’ has just

been released. What can you tell us about it and your character, and what was it like to work on? for the second time in a film! My scenes took place late at night and feature lots of stunts and motorbikes, which was so cool. I got to meet Jenna Coleman, Joe Blakemore, Thomas Turgoose, and Oliver Jackson Cohen, who plays the lead Jack. They were all so welcoming and I had such a great time on set. Q You’ll also be playing Joe’s grandson

in The Boys in the Boat. What was it like being directed by George Clooney? A I was so shocked when I learnt I’d landed the role of Joe’s grandson. At the time, I didn’t know much about the 1936 Olympics, but I soon got familiar with the story and was so inspired by Joe Rantz and the rest of the team. It’s such a heart-warming story. Working with George Clooney was pretty surreal! I was a little nervous when I first met him, but I had no need to be, he’s such a nice guy, so down to earth and incredibly funny. One day I was standing on set shivering as it was extremely cold. In an extremely surreal moment George Clooney walked up to me and started talking to me and even gave me his coat! I spent about six weekends in the Cotswolds learning to row with the Olympic rowing team coaches before a week of filming. It was an amazing experience.

“George Clooney was such a nice guy, so down to earth and incredibly funny” Q Can you pinpoint any particular highlights from your acting career so far? A Definitely The Railway Children, but also Channel 5’s All Creatures Great and Small. I was only on set for three or four days, but they made me feel part of the family. My character does a day’s work experience at the vets’ practice, so I spent a lot of time with Samuel West, watching him at work as Siegfried, operating on a dog. I had to handle a rat too, so I got to know it a bit before filming started. The animals are really well trained. I loved filming for All Creatures. I’m a big Harry Potter fan so I was starstruck when I turned around and spotted Matthew Lewis, who plays Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter series. Q How have your friends reacted to your fame? A It’s great that they still make me feel like just one of the lads. One day I can be sharing a laugh with Jim Broadbent between takes of a major movie, or setting off for London, Wales, Manchester or Belfast for filming, and the next I’m enjoying a kickabout with my pals in the playground. Q How do you juggle acting work with school?

A I think Covid helped in a way because I got used to having lessons online. I have a tutor when I’m on set and my teachers send me work online. Q Do you have any favourite films and TV shows to watch? A Now I’m a little older I’ve started watching things that are a little more grown up. I’m a big fan of DiCaprio and De Niro, so enjoyed watching The Killers of the Flower Moon recently. I also like anything with Pacino in! Q How do you like to spend your free time? A I’m a huge Leeds United fan, so I spend

a lot of my time supporting them. I also love boxing and playing guitar, both of which I’ve done from a young age.

Q At the end of 2022 you won Yorkshire’s Young Achiever of the Year for Contribution to the Arts. What was it like to be presented with this award? A I was so shocked to even be nominated for the Yorkshire’s Young Achievers’ awards, let alone to win it! When I realised who some of the past winners were, it blew me away. I’ve learnt a lot about the Yorkshire’s Young Achievers’ charity since and I’m so keen to support all the great work they do.

elmsley is a picturesque town full of history nestled in North Yorkshire. The town’s name, meaning ‘Helm’s forest clearing’, reflects its historical connection to the heavily wooded fringe of the North York Moors. Lying where Ryedale transitions from moorland to

the flat vale of Pickering, Helmsley’s compact layout retains its mediaeval charm, with notable architectural character. The market town is linked to the Earls of Feversham, whose ancestral home, Duncombe Park, overlooks Helmsley Castle. The presence of a statue honouring William Duncombe, 2nd Baron Feversham, graces the town square. Helmsley boasts a range of independent shops and offers a vibrant cultural scene. Noteworthy landmarks like Duncombe Park featured in films such as The Secret Garden, Parade’s End, Dad’s Army and many others. the river, the garden also sits below the ruins of Helmsley Castle. Inside the walled garden, you will find glasshouses, apple orchids and a vibrant display of flowers, fruits and vegetables. It was originally built in 1759 and has been welcoming visitors for over a quarter of a century. The garden was a major employer throughout its history, but it fell into dereliction after the First World War. Restoration then began in 1994 when nurse, Alison Ticehurst, had the intention of creating a beautiful garden alongside opportunities for therapeutic agriculture. Helmsley Walled Garden takes a holistic approach with its guests, with the intention of nurturing people, as well as its plants, hoping that visitors experience the therapeutic benefits of the outdoors. It hosts winter workshops, where you can either make herbal remedies, crafts or wreaths. The garden offers a sense

of safety and security, which is at the centre of its ethos. It is still evolving, with a new labyrinth and a sculpture trail. It also has an award-winning, family-run cafe that has an incredible menu.

THE RICH HISTORY OF HELMSLEY CASTLE Discover over 900 years with a trip to Helmsley Castle. The castle has had many owners, being passed through many families, all of whom have made their own imprint on the castle. When the castle was sold to banker and politician, Charles Duncombe, in 1695, his brother in law hired William Wakefield to build a country house at Duncombe Park overlooking the castle, then leaving the castle to decay. It hosts the 1812 Theatre Company and 1812 Youth Theatre as well as offering youth training programmes, writing sessions and morning cafe sessions. With lively performances, insightful talks and relaxed film screenings, you’ll be spoilt for choice of high quality arts and culture.

The Arts Centre is housed in the Old Meeting House, which was originally built as a venue for Quaker meetings in 1812. When it became disused, it was purchased by the newly-formed Old Meeting House Trust, with the initial hopes of evolving it into a music venue. After the Trust became a registered charity, it was supported by the Arts Council and Ryedale District Council. It was then supported by the first Arts Council National Lottery grant in North Yorkshire and refurbishment of the building began. After suffering a fire, the Arts Centre had to be rebuilt and has since dramatically evolved with the support of locals and volunteers, making it the community-led social hive it is today. Described by themselves as a ‘meeting place for the creatively curious’, the now thriving performance venue provides many reasons to visit, one being its studio bar, which is a cosy spot to grab a drink and enjoy an intimate performance.

After huge success at its York base, the

relaxed, rustic venue created another unique restaurant in Helmsley. Dishing up French and Italian-style food, freshly baked bread and sandwiches, as well as having the beautiful backdrop of Helmsley Castle, it must not be missed. Another one to tick off the Helmsley dining bucket list is The Vinehouse Cafe. The independent and family-owned cafe can be found within the Helmsley Walled Garden. The casual eatery is a perfect place to enjoy a leisurely lunch, or to just grab a quick coffee on-the-go. If cute cafes or afternoon teas aren’t to your taste, Helmsley Brewing Company is a great hang-out for beer-lovers. It has a wide variety of traditional ales and craft beers, all brewed on sight.

Grilled Eggplant with Garlic Serves 2 Eggplant (aubergine) is one of the most popular vegetables at late-night barbecue stands in China. In this recipe, we grill the eggplant in the oven with the same seasonings as those used in barbecue dishes. It can be served as an appetiser for dinner or can be eaten as a snack. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 400g (14 oz) long purple eggplant (aubergine) • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) canola (rapeseed) oil, plus extra for brushing • 5 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 2 bird’s eye chillies, destemmed and finely chopped • 2 tablespoons chilli flakes • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) soy sauce • 1 tablespoon vegan oyster sauce • 1 spring onion (scallion), roughly chopped

METHOD Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). Brush a thin layer of the oil on the outside of the eggplant, then place them on a baking tray on the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 15 minutes, then turn them around and cook for another 10 minutes. 3 In a bowl, mix the garlic, chilli, chilli flakes, cumin, soy sauce, vegan oyster sauce and the oil. Put the eggplants on a baking tray, cut them open lengthways and flatten, then brush the seasoning evenly over the eggplants. Bake for another 6-8 minutes then remove and scatter over the spring onion. 1

Spring Onion Tofu Serves 2 Spring onion tofu is a popular home dish that requires very few ingredients: the tofu is simply simmered in a sauce with lots of spring onion until tender, juicy and full of flavour. It is also one of the quickest tofu dishes to cook if you don’t have much time to prepare a meal. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons soy sauce • 2 tablespoons vegan oyster sauce • 1⁄2 teaspoon cornflour (cornstarch) or potato starch • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) canola (rapeseed) oil • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 10 g (1/4 oz) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped

• 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) tender tofu, cut into 1.5 cm (1⁄2 in) dice • 3 spring onions (scallions), roughly sliced

METHOD 1 Tofu and spring onion (scallion) are a match made in heaven. Spring onion is almost always needed in tofu dishes, as it brings out extra flavour in the tofu. 2 In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, vegan oyster sauce and starch until well combined. 3 Heat a wok over a medium heat and, once hot, add the oil. Add the garlic and ginger and stir for 30 seconds, then add the tofu dice, moving them gently so they don’t break or stick to the pan. After 1 minute add the soy sauce mixture and stir gently. 4 Cover with a lid and allow to cook for 3-5 minutes, gently tilting the pan occasionally to avoid the tofu sticking. Remove the lid and add the spring onion. Let it cook until most of the sauce is gone.

Stir-Fried Rice Noodles Serves 2

In this recipe, the rice noodles are first cooked then stir-fried together with different ingredients. Check to see if you can find sword beans at your local Asian grocer, but if not, runner beans work just as well for this recipe. You can also add any other ingredients you like. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes

• 350 g (121⁄2 oz) fresh rice noodles, or 200 g (7 oz) dried rice noodles • 120 ml (4 fl oz) canola (rapeseed) oil • 200 g (7 oz) tender or firm tofu, cut into strips • 6 sword or runner beans, cut into 3 cm (11/4 in) lengths • 100 g (31⁄2 oz) tinned bamboo shoots, drained and cut into thin strips • 2 shallots, thinly sliced • 100 g (31⁄2 oz) light-green zucchini (courgette), cut into thin strips • 5 shiitake mushrooms, soaked for 2 hours then cut into thin strips • 5 g (1⁄8 oz) wood ear mushrooms, soaked for 30 minutes then cut into thin strips

1 Bring a saucepan of water to the boil and cook the rice noodles until almost al dente (about 2 minutes less than the packet instructs), then pour them into a sieve and run them under cold water to wash off the starch. Drain, then soak them in fresh cold water. Be careful not to overcook the noodles, otherwise they will start to break while stir-frying. 2 Heat a wok over a medium– high heat and, once hot, add half of the oil and pan-fry the tofu until both sides are golden and crispy, then take it out. 3 Add the remaining oil and increase the heat to high. Add the sword beans and stir for 1 minute, then add the bamboo shoots and stir for another minute. Add the shallot and stir for 30 seconds, then add the zucchini and stir for another 30 seconds. Add the shiitake and wood ear mushrooms and stir for 1 minute. 4 Add the rice noodles and tofu and stir everything together. Add the hoisin sauce, soy sauce and vegan oyster sauce and mix everything together well, stirring for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce has been fully absorbed by the noodles. Add the sesame and spring onion.

G AINS Glencroft owner Ed Sexton on continuing the family business, the joy of British Wool and why Yorkshire inspires him

Q What was the original inspiration behind Glencroft back in the 1980s? A My father Richard had worked in the wool and sheepskin industry since the 1960s. In the 80s he was sales director of a country clothing brand, but got disillusioned with the gradual offshoring of manufacturing to the Far East to achieve higher margins. He handed his notice in one Christmas, then started up on 1 January working with all the British manufacturers he had known for the past 20 years. Glencroft was created to be a traditional British country clothing brand. Q Did your parents Richard and Justina offer something different from the off? A From the beginning my parents worked with Yorkshire mills, British tanneries and knitwear manufacturing in Scotland and England, to create a range primarily from wool and sheepskin. Even in recent years when they’ve had to go further afield – for example when the last commercial British lambskin glove manufacturer closed in the 2000s – they went to Portugal in person and found factories and manufacturers who were doing the job properly, paying staff a decent rate and using high quality European materials. We’ve doggedly stuck to materials like 100% British Wool for over 30 years as it’s what we are passionate about and makes us different, plus we want a Glencroft jumper to be British from sheep to jumper. Q Tell me about the converted cow barn you are based in… A We’re based in Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales and my family has lived here since 1983. It’s a conservation village with many of the houses and properties owned by the Ingleborough Estate and Farrer family. In the early 1990s, Dr Farrer, who was head of the estate, was keen to make use of some of the buildings that were no longer required for their original purpose.

In return for a peppercorn rent, for a number of years we invested in the full refurbishment of a cow barn in the village, which has been our warehouse ever since. Like most barn conversions we had to keep the character of the building – the big barn door, the low beams and the few steps drop down into the cow shed at one end where our slippers now reside. When you wander around upstairs, you soon learn to duck, because despite their age, those wooden beams remain as hard as ever!

Q Were you always going to take over running the business? A Absolutely not! Growing up in the rural Dales, the first thing I wanted to do at the age of 18 was try something different, so I moved to London for the next 13 years to study and work in marketing. It was whilst doing a Masters degree and thinking about my next steps and desire to create and run my own brand, that it dawned on me that this little family business in the Dales may be just the thing. I’ve always been passionate about sustainability and loved the countryside, so it wasn’t too much of a jump to move back up North.

“We want a Glencroft jumper to be British”

Q How would you say Glencroft has evolved over the last 35+ years? A In some ways, we are very similar to how we were 35 years ago – we even produce some styles inspired by those we made in 1987! However, we’ve also moved with the times – both to develop and grow the business, as well as to stay relevant to both our trade business and our loyal customers. Although a relatively recent development, we are now also online and active on social media, which has really helped us to transform our consumer sales, as well as giving us the opportunity to communicate our brand more effectively. Sustainability has always been part of our brand identity, and in recent years we have communicated much more around what we do with our supply chains, and the processes involved in making our products. A good example of this is how we have launched our Clapdale Wool project, which we started in 2020 with funding from the Yorkshire Dales Sustainable Development Fund. The project is our attempt to create a circular economy for wool in our part of the Dales, supporting local farmers and producing the most traceable wool we can. “We stand out for our timeless designs, slow fashion and product longevity” Q What do you think makes Glencroft’s products stand out? A Glencroft stands out for its timeless designs, slow fashion and product quality and longevity. It can take us up to two years to design and launch a product – because we explore the produce, production process, supply chain and designs in such depth, and that is simply how long it takes! It might not be the most cost-effective way to operate, in a world of fast fashion, but it is what makes us who we are – a brand founded in quality by a family that really cares about its products.

There’s nothing like a 100% British Wool chunky jumper made in the UK, but there’s very few brands making them, particularly at an affordable price, which is where I think we stand out. The other, important factor which makes us stand out from our fast fashion counterparts is our customer service and the level of trust that people have in our brand. Every order is hand packed and comes with a hand-written note from us, thanking our customers for their support. Together with the transparent way we talk about our produce, where it has come from and the process of making it, we build a level of trust in our brand that brings back repeat customers for many years, because they know the product is good and if it’s not right we’ll make it right. Q What inspires new designs? A The Yorkshire Dales is a massive inspiration

for us. That’s why so many of our products are named after the rivers, hills, dales and local landmarks that surround us. Our recent Thwaite jumper, made from our own Yorkshire Dales wool, was inspired by the undyed Clapdale yarn it’s made from. We added deep grooves to the jumper design, to reflect the undulating hills of the Dales, whilst creating shadow and variation.

We also listen carefully to what our customers are asking for and looking for – luckily, they do tell us, and we love a chat! The past is also a constant source of ideas – we’ve made hundreds of jumper styles over the past 35 years, so it’s fun to look at old designs and patterns and use them to inspire future designs. Q What have been your recent biggest sellers? A Our Dales sheep design jumper has been our biggest selling jumper for the past five years, and is showing no signs of slowing down. It continues to surprise us ever since we found the version we’d made in the 1990s and decided to revive it – we thought it might be something fun that would last a year! British sheepskin rugs are probably our biggest selling product by volume – our rugs are from British sheep, are British tanned and hand finished by Richard in our warehouse (many ‘British’ rugs are actually tanned overseas). The rise of the hygge house style and more and more wood or stone floors has made these a hugely in demand product. Flat caps are another of our biggest selling items. Never out of fashion, especially when it’s a British made flat cap, they have become even more popular since the well-known Peaky Blinders series. We upgraded all our flat cap linings to organic cotton from polyester a few years ago, as well as introducing a few new styles including our Yorkshire Tweed Norber. The only challenge is ensuring manufacturing can keep up with demand from our international customers in Japan, USA and Canada!

If symptoms occur for at least two winters in a row with remission in the spring months, a diagnosis of SAD is usually made. It is referred to as seasonal because it is mostly triggered by a lack of sunlight during the darker months, and is estimated to affect as many as one in 15 people in the UK. Insufficient sunlight can affect our levels of serotonin, the so-called happy hormone responsible for our sense of wellbeing, and melatonin, which is responsible for normal sleeping patterns. some of the most common symptoms. Happily, there are a number of steps you can take to help lessen the effects. First of all, chase the light! It might be cold outside, but wrap up warm and brave the elements, especially when the sun is shining. Mood-friendly foods include beans, avocados, bananas and wheatgerm as they help the body to produce more serotonin. Deficiency has been linked directly to low mood, so it’s well worth topping up. Vitamin D is also important and you will often hear of it being referred to as the sunshine vitamin owing to how it is naturally produced in the body when we are exposed to sunlight. Of course this means deficiency during the winter months is relatively common. Mushrooms, eggs and fish are good food sources, or a vitamin D supplement or spray can help to ensure you’re getting enough. Keep your stress in check: stress, if left to spiral out of control, can aggravate symptoms of depression. Foods that can help here include blueberries, raspberries and strawberries to help prevent the release of cortisol, a hormone released by your adrenal glands. Herbal remedies can also help. ’ll confess, I’ve never been that flexible. My hamstrings are so tight that even touching my toes is a challenge. So I was intrigued when I was invited to try Pliability, a fitness app focused on mobility training. Formerly known as ROMWOD, Pliability was originally for CrossFit athletes. Since rebranding, they have expanded to provide daily stretching routines aimed at golfers, runners, swimmers, and gym-goers (like myself). Many people focus on strength and stamina in their training, underestimating the importance of mobility, coordination, and balance. Endorsed by professional athletes (including golfer

Lee Westwood), Pliability’s routines are a fusion of mobility, yoga, prehab, rehab, recovery, mindfulness, and strength. The first time I log in to the app, I am pleased to see that the daily routines are quite short. Most of the videos are 23-24 minutes, and I can easily fit a session in after I get back from the gym. The app suggests a new video for me to do each day, although there are hundreds to browse. The videos show two ‘models’, who take you through several poses in sequence. The one on the left shows less flexibility and the one on the right shows more. I am instructed to hold each pose for around 2-3 minutes by the voiceover. You need

very little equipment to do Pliability. All you really need is a mat, although blocks and resistance bands can come in handy if you are less flexible and need to modify the poses. After a few days I find myself really getting into it. It’s satisfying to mark the videos as ‘complete’ and see my progress charted in the app. Holding each pose and really focusing on it also becomes quite relaxing. ocated on the river Ouse in Yorkshire, Bert & May founder Lee Thornley’s new family home embodies the commitment to exceptional materials and fine craftsmanship for which his tile brand has become well-known. Originally built in 1650 as a collection of small cottages, the lodge features natural materials and a raw and simple colour palette, with restored fireplaces and exposed original beams celebrating the beauty of the building’s irregular shapes and features. At the heart of the home is a Haberdasher’s Kitchen by deVOL, which sits comfortably in an open plan dining room overlooking the natural swimming pool and views of the river beyond. The kitchen was designed by Lee and his partner Phil, with guidance from Helen Parker (deVOL Creative Director) and Paul O'Leary (deVOL founder) following a visit to the deVOL Cotes Mill showroom. The similar values underpinning both brands established an easy rhythm during the design period that flows through into the aesthetic language of the space. Bert & May’s Raw Thick Bejmat terracotta tiles on the floor, which are handmade in Morocco, create a

“We wanted to create a home that feels like a sanctuary” May’s signature Alalpardo tile creating a striking design feature against the plain Pearl tile flooring. The two en-suite bathrooms for Lee’s children use the rich green tones of Bert & May’s palette in combination with reclaimed and natural wood to reflect the stunning surroundings of the house. Bert & May’s honed green marble tile in one shower is playfully set next to the graphic Majadas tile, while a bespoke Split Shift tile adds a modern accent to the traditional bathroom. The guest bathroom continues the natural, earthy ambience with the wall and console unit covered in Bert & May’s clear glazed Bejmat tiles to offset twin stone basins. The aged bronze shower and tap fixtures combined with the Bert & May Monsaraz tile create a sense of the old meeting the new. Lee says: “We wanted to create a home that feels like a sanctuary. beautiful neutral background to set off the rich oak tones in the mid-century style deVOL Haberdasher’s kitchen. The brushed bronze Samuel Heath tap adds another layer of craftsmanship and texture to the finished kitchen, and a fireplace creates a focal point with reclaimed tiles from Bert & May. The backsplash, which extends across the entire wall behind the kitchen units, is tiled in Clear Glazed Bejmat tiles and adds a subtle reflection to the space. The result is a room of warmth and sophistication, in muted, earthy tones. Lee’s focused approach through the house was to restore its beautiful bones, and the charming, stripped back utility hall makes the most of the home’s original features, while Bert & May’s Reclaimed Cozar Tile adorns the hearth. Lime wash paints from Bauwerk and neutral, raw tones used in the snug to allow the revealed beams and flooring to take centre stage. With views over rolling countryside and down to the river Ouse, the master bedroom has been designed to welcome nature inside with natural wood on the walls and vaulted ceiling, which combined with soft linens and furnishings create a luxurious and calming sanctuary. Adjoining the master bedroom, the shower room continues the fresh aesthetic, with Bert &

Absolutely heads to Alwoodley to look around a unique project by Verus Construction

ounded in 2009 and based in Yorkshire, Verus Construction, the luxury new build construction specialist, creates luxury, unique homes and distinctive housing developments across Yorkshire. Here, Damian Barker, founder and CEO, discusses one his most recent luxury housing projects on the sought-after Wigton Chase in Alwoodley. The construction company already represented a strong portfolio of successful, large-scale projects and was recommended to the client via the renowned Yorkshire-based Architects, Studio Map.

The design team included Studio Map and Verus Construction, whose skills, expertise and attention to detail are showcased throughout Wigton Chase, its latest impressive home project. The goal of the project was to create an elegant, spacious and functional family home with large surrounding gardens. The end result is an exquisite modern two storey detached family home that blends minimalism and quiet luxury. The multi-million pound project boasts five bedrooms, each complete with dressing rooms and an en-suite, bar and games room, home gym, triple garage, and open plan kitchen and dining area with glass sliding doors that lead out to a peaceful and impressive garden. Architecturally, the project makes use of geometric forms that are pivoted either

MAKING USE OF GLASS As you enter Wigton Chase, the spacious foyer and glass staircase welcomes you with an abundance of natural light, courtesy of the floor to ceiling glass sliding doors that create a large open plan entertaining and living space which flows seamlessly into the gardens. Q How long have you been Head of the Infant and Junior School and originally what attracted you to the role? A I’ve enjoyed eight years at Sheffield Girls' and was attracted by the phenomenal academic reputation and clear focus the school has on putting pupils at the centre of everything we do. The school never stands still, and the focus on design and innovation in both the pedagogy and the wider pastoral and extra-curricular elements of the provision is inspiring. Q Is it a privilege to be overseeing this part of your girls’ learning journey? A It’s a bit of an understatement to say it’s a privilege to work with our pupils at this stage in their school career. Not a day goes by where I don’t have at least one interaction with one of the girls – from our youngest learners in Reception to our eldest students in Year 6 – which will stop me in my tracks and give me something new to think about. Their ideas, creativity, commitment to their studies and their seemingly endless enthusiasm and energy are an absolute joy to behold and I don't take it for granted. Getting to watch our pupils develop their skills and knowledge and eventually move

on to Senior school has been the highlight of my career as Head of Juniors. Q If we happened to wander into any classroom, what would we encounter? A I think the first thing you’d see is a lot of smiles and a warm welcome from both our pupils and teachers alike! Life Skills

Jonathon Anderson, Headmaster of Aysgarth School, on the true value of embedding life skills that help children connect, trust and become independent

am struck over and over again by how much thought and investment goes into the lives of our schools, both in the classroom and beyond. We continue to grapple with how we split our time across a range of subjects while still allowing space for sport, music, the arts and, of course, some time to be independent and to make choices. On visits to senior schools, I have marvelled at science departments that look like universities and engineering departments using technology that makes my head spin. Sporting endeavours now come with a level of analysis and data collection that my own experiences at school simply could not match. With all these impressive advancements and innovations, I am always left wondering about ‘life skills’ – what they really are, how we develop them and what value they have to young people of tomorrow. For me, life skills are about one individual’s ability to deal with others, one-to-one and as part of a community. They are, perhaps, part of a Venn diagram that doesn’t overlap too much with technology and is more rooted in intangibles: trust, feelings, independence, confidence, and so on. The recent focus on mental health might leave some feeling we have all gone soft, but the significant benefit I see is a willingness to talk, to enlist help and to trust. The point at which we follow this path will vary, but knowing it’s time to talk, that help is there and that stigma in this regard is all but gone better equips our pupils for the inevitable bumps in the road. We might take steps forward in

“Some life skills can be planned and taught but many only become second nature when lived through school” confidence after public speaking, a moment on stage, a sporting victory or an improving set of grades, but talking, getting help and trusting are core confidences – the true foundation for these other experiences to add to. I feel very conscious of the importance of the ‘preparatory’ element of schools such as Aysgarth. In many cases, we are quite small, incredibly caring communities where pupils are known inside out. However, we prepare children for bigger stages to come, where life skills will be tested. Having to consciously build a group of friends and adapt to a community, house, class and team is a new experience for many and, I would suggest, requires skills learned through PSHE lessons, boarding, positions of responsibility, collaborative work, school council experiences and time left to make choices. Some life skills can be planned and taught, but many only become second nature

when lived through school culture, minute to minute, with a set of values and expectations. Happily, I find myself in a place where trust has been actively developed through targeted interventions and forums and then reinforced through daily activities. While our grades are something to be proud of, it is the life skills that our pupils take into the testing times ahead that fill me with confidence that exciting, fulfilling, compassionate futures await them.

SUCCESS Head of King's Magna Middle School (KM), Joseph Birchall, on developing a passion for sports or the arts

general education at KM is about experimenting and learning through experiences, trying new things, and discovering what you enjoy and excel at. But for those students who already know what they are most passionate about or where their strengths lie, we have specific pathways for them which hone those skills and prepare them for the next steps in their education and careers. Our two ‘pathways to success’ are the Performance Sport Pathway and the Academy for Dramatic Arts (ADA) Pathway, which enthusiastic students can choose from Year 7 upwards. Each pathway consists of

extra tuition and specialist support whilst allowing plenty of time to complete a well-rounded education through our standard curriculum. The Performance Sport Pathway (PSP) is available in basketball, cricket, football, netball and swimming. BRICKS Lego brick building clubs can be a game changer for neurodiverse children – helping them develop social skills, make friends and have a whole lot of fun

any parents can testify to Lego’s incredible power to engage children in creative play for hours, even days, at a time. But now the tiny brick’s superpower is being put to educational use in a brilliantly constructive way for neurodiverse young people at Brick Club – a place to build, play and learn among likeminded friends. Brick Club is the brainchild of Play Included, a Cambridgeshire-based community interest company and a LEGO Foundation partner. The idea began almost two decades back, when Play Included founder and director Dr Gina Gómez de la Cuesta was starting out her Clinical Psychology PhD at the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge. She heard about a pioneering Lego therapy methodology being devised in the US by Dr Dan LeGoff to support neurodiverse

children and young adults – he’d been in touch with the Autism Research Centre to tell them what he was up to. This tied in with Gina Gómez’ own interests and research specialism and the use of Lego to support play and learning for neurodiverse children became the theme of her doctorate at UEA. Later, she went on to co-author the professional manual LEGO-Based Therapy with, among others, Dr Dan LeGoff. Fast forward to 2018 and she founded Bricks for Autism, now called Play Included. Gómez and her colleagues at Play Included run an innovative programme for health and education professionals. Called Brick-by-Brick, it teaches them how to facilitate Brick Clubs. Everything they learn is evidence based, grounded in the thinking and approaches found in Lego-Based Therapy. “Since the company began, we’ve trained 3,886 professionals – teachers, health professionals, play therapists, psychologists, occupational

therapists and other similar professions – and in 58 countries around the world,” says Gómez. Brick Club has proved to be versatile, scalable and transferable, working across different age groups, needs

“You’ve got a joint focus on a task, so you don’t have to have forced conversation or small talk” and settings (it’s typically recommended for age five up to adulthood). Recently, the team even undertook small-scale pilots in deprived areas of Mexico and Kenya and were pleasantly surprised by the outcomes. “There are some cultural adaptations and differences you’ve got to think about in different settings, but we’ve had really positive outcomes from those small pilots in Mexico and Kenya.” What this programme teaches is a method of play facilitation that removes many of the key issues for neurodiverse children in group settings. Sessions at Brick Club are designed so they are flexible, meeting the needs and interests

of the members. Sometimes children can play different roles (known as Engineer, Builder and Supplier). Or they can opt for ‘freestyle’ building in pairs or small groups. More advanced builders can have a go at stop-motion animation, coding and programming. Whatever the activity (and there are lots), they have the opportunity to take charge and start making decisions together. What underpins Brick Club is, of course, the simple idea of play. This comes easily and naturally to most children, and it’s important for social and emotional development, but we know play is not easy for everyone. But one

of the many clever things about Brick Club is that neurodiverse children often come into their own with Lego bricks. “A lot of the kids already know Lego and they feel like it’s something they are good at,” says Gómez. “Often these kids are used to being told that they’re not very good at this or that and have to have extra help – but here is something that they are good A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

at.” So children who turn up for Brick Club are not faced with what Gómez describes as that same old round of “negative stories”. Rather than being that child in need of extra help, Brick Club is highlighting what they can do. “This comes at it from a positive – it’s building on their strengths and what they like.” While building things together is the fun bit, there’s a broader goal behind it. Brick Club helps children socialise

without those challenging moments inherent in so many other organised and spontaneous activities – the things that raise their anxiety levels. “You don’t have to have that face-to-face communication. You’ve got a joint focus on a task – a physical thing – and you’re all looking at the instructions, so you don’t have to have forced conversation or small talk.” The use of Lego is happening in local schools too. As Head of Chapter House and Queen’s Kindergarten, Karen Kilkenny says: “There are so many benefits to children having the opportunity to explore Lego. Every week we host the popular Chapter House Lego Club and set up challenges for the children which stimulate creativity, experimentation and roleplaying. The children become miniature designers as they use the medium to create and build anything. They develop their problem solving and communication skills as they discuss their ideas and designs with the group to solve the puzzles either individually or as a team. They have so much fun too, which makes it a great activity for promoting the wellbeing of young people. “Above all, Lego is great for resilience and dealing with frustration. Children can grow in self-confidence and independence as they tackle any mistakes in their creations and are so proud when they have accomplished what they set out to.” playincluded.com

BBC’s Young Chorister of the Year 2023 Finals were held late last year, and friends and family of local schoolgirl Natalie Fooks were overjoyed to see her crowned Senior Winner. The awards, held by BBC One’s Songs of Praise and Radio 2, and presented by Aled Jones and Revd. Kate Bottley, showcase the very best in young choral talent across the country. After a challenging but exciting semi-final, during which Natalie sang All Things Bright and Beautiful (by John Rutter), it was her moving rendition of The Virgin’s Slumber Song (by Max Reger) in the Final which saw her hit the high notes and the top spot, as the Young Chorister of the Year. Martin Speight has joined Repton as Technical Director of Cricket. A talented wicketkeeper-batsman, and formerly with Sussex and Durham, he was the recipient of the Walter Lawrence Trophy for the fastest FirstClass century, although he is most remembered for his performance in the 1993 NatWest final. Stand- out musician Huddersfield Grammar School’s budding guitarist Oban Donaldson has once again hit the high note with his latest victory. Year 7 student Oban has made it through to the final of the ISA’s Young Musician Competition 2024 and will head to St Hilda’s College at Oxford University to compete against other students from nationwide independent schools. Oban competed against 200 applicants for a place in the competition, which is held at high regard within the ISA network. It is no surprise Oban has made it to the final and wowed the judges. His months of practising for the audition and years of honing his skills is clear

The World Ayrshire Federation Annual Conference 2024 will see around 100 farmers from countries including Kenya, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and America attend the show as part of a UK tour. The Great Yorkshire Show will be the only agricultural show they will attend as part of an 18-day tour to see how UK farmers breed Ayrshire cattle and to share best practise. In the Main Ring, the Paul Hannam Quad Bike Stunt Show will wow crowds every day as the stuntman from North Devon who raced at British Championship level, will be performing jumps, trick riding and doing multiple rolls. The 165th Great Yorkshire Show will be held on Tuesday 9 July to Friday 12 July. This will be the final show for Show Director Charles Mills, who says: “It is always a delight to host a world conference, but it will be particularly special for me to welcome the Ayrshire World Conference as I was Chief Steward for the Ayrshire breed in the 90s for the Great Yorkshire Show. “This is looking set to be an exciting show with the best animals in the country competing as well as first class machinery and innovation and a brand new Main Ring performer with the Paul Hannam Quad Bike Stunt Show.
