August 2013

hat with the wondrous birth of HRH Prince George of Cambridge, British victories at Wimbledon and the Tour de France, not to mention the weather, we’re wondering how August can ever compete with July? We’re not sure it can, but you can certainly compete – on the moors. Grouse shooting begins on the Glorious Twelfth and is widely considered one of the busiest days of the season. The thought of having another reason to spend time outdoors in this heavenly weather is too exciting for us to ignore. It definitely warrants it’s own issue. And here it is: The Country Special. Notorious huntsman Otis Ferry (son of legendary rocker, Bryan Ferry) talks to me about preparing for hunts, exercising hounds and highlights my rather blatant fishing ignorance. Alice Milner chats to model-come-designer Jasmine Guinness about her silk creations for Glorious Goodwood and her recently rediscovered love of riding. Steering briefly away from the country theme, BBC Proms Director Roger Wright describes his passion for the world-renowned London festival and reveals what he’s most looking forward to in this year’s programme (well, sort of reveals). We have the smartest shooting wardrobes for both ladies and gents and some very English country-themed interiors as well, all courtesy of our wonderful Interiors Editor, Tara Craig. It’s time to make hay while the sun shines, so on that note, it’s off to the country we go…

Arts Review LIFE DRAWING

London drawing At Heatherley’s School of Fine Art

I

hadn’t picked up a pencil since having been laughed out of a life drawing class whilst at university. It was therefore with trepidation that I climbed back on the canvas horse for a day-long workshop offered by innovative drawing school, London Drawing, in collaboration with Chelsea establishment, Heatherley’s School of Fine Art. I needn’t have worried. London Drawing’s Rowan James was encouraging without being remotely patronising as he took us

Jukebox Dave Berry’s Top Picks

through various methods of life drawing. Techniques taught ranged from blind drawing and drawing with the nondominant hand, both of which produced the more fluid drawings, to painstakingly measured and tonal drawings. My fellow students varied in age and experience and the open and creative workshop was pitched perfectly to suit us all. At the end of the day I felt physically exhausted, yet mentally rejuvenated and furnished with a solid foundation on which to continue drawing. The day-long courses continue throughout the Autumn. By Camilla Norton

elcome to the fascinating world of Oliver Twist and the most famous workhouse in the world. Historian Dr. Ruth Richardson’s meticulously researched book, paints a lively portrait of everyday life in 19th century London - from hungry orphans to ruthless landlords. During her campaign to save the Cleveland Street workhouse from demolition, Richardson uncovered exciting new facts about Charles Dickens’ early life; historical material proving that the workhouse near his first London childhood home, provided the main inspiration for Oliver Twist. Richardson shows how many Dickens’ characters were based on real people, living in and around Cleveland Street, and how important these years were to his development as a writer. It was at this address that he played as a toddler, learnt to read and write, and worked as a junior reporter. Amazingly, both Dickens’ house and the workhouse still stand in the shadow of the British Telecom Tower. I couldn’t put down this thoroughly fascinating book. By Alice Coke

DOG’S

L FE Simon Moore discovers the joys of dog walking as he goes behind the scenes at Pet Pavilion

W

e could all learn a lot from dogs. Loyalty. Selflessness. Obedience. Dogs would, I’m sure, love to teach us more of these vital life skills, but sadly, most of us have nine-tofive jobs. We can’t be there for them all the time, so how do they get outside to stretch their legs or chase ducks in the park? And who, if not them, will chase the ducks? It is this very real problem for city dog owners that Pet Pavilion have set out to solve with their dog walking service. Forget flustered walkers herding vast packs of

dogs around Hyde Park. This is something else altogether. Founder Jenny SavilleEdells introduces one of Pet Pavilion’s star dog walkers, Christian. ‘Christian walks no more than four dogs at a time. There are a lot that walk lots more dogs, but we don’t. Christian goes out several times a day. His van is fully air-conditioned. It’s a lovely day today, but in the winter, when the dogs are soaking wet and muddy, they get brought into the grooming salon to be washed off. They’re delivered home clean and dry, without all that mud dripping. It’s a complete service.’ Jenny has a lot of love for dogs, having had them around all her life. ‘You want the best for them. They’re like our children. They don’t ask for anything; all they want is to be loved.’ We meet Christian at Battersea Park, where today’s canine clients are raring to go. Toy Poodle Marsha yips and circles Christian’s legs, reminding us all who’s

really in charge here. Gus, the Border Terrier, ‘ruffs’, runs and bounces about, loving the wide-open spaces and the unexpected company. Maya the Labrador isn’t having any of it – this exercise lark is a bit much for a blistering hot Tuesday in July, so she just saunters along between shady rest spots. Silver the Labradoodle absent-mindedly sniffs about at his lead, just happy to be there. Either that or he’s being modest. ‘Silver has a lot of personality,’ Christian tells me. ‘If he has a bad day, he lets you know about it. He runs away and stays away for up to 10 minutes. In the beginning it was really bad. He didn’t know me much back then and I was chasing him for 40 minutes at a time. We had to leave the park – my timing is very strict – and he knew that. He knew we had to leave and he drove me mad.’ Marsha isn’t about to let Labradoodle stories steal her limelight. She sticks close to Christian, yipping and barking at will. ‘She has been barking a lot more recently. I actually think she enjoys it. In the beginning I laughed at her when she

was all ‘ruff-ruff-ruff, I’m the boss’ – the tiny dog, barking at the big ones! She’s a princess and comes from a very rich family. Now she barks at everyone in the house. Let’s say I just drop her off for washing and grooming. We leave her there and she starts crying ‘Please! Take me away!’ After about 15 minutes she goes totally quiet. I think it’s all for me.’ A lot of consideration goes into assembling these groups. Gus, Marsha, Maya and Silver didn’t come together by

accident. Christian spends time getting to know and love the animals that come to Pet Pavilion. He can’t help grinning as he poses for a picture with Silver. ‘This one is almost like my dog. I walk him six times a week, Monday to Saturday. I’m emotionally attached to these dogs.’ That said, he never lets affection get in the way of discipline. He and his fellow dog walkers try to get as much one-on-one time with each dog as possible, especially if there are behavioural issues. ‘Training is hard when they’re in groups. It’s good for socialising and they learn from each other, but if you’re talking about proper training, it’s not going to work in groups. You’re only able to teach a dog when you can keep their attention. The dog must look at you all the time. They just want to see your face, your eyes. They always look you in the eyes.’ It’s a day off discipline today, at least. The sun is shining and four of the best friends in the borough are running for the same tennis ball. Gus and Marsha are shoulder-to-shoulder, each convinced the other is going to get it first. Then Silver leaps up, jaws open, and snatches it away from the pair of them. Maya, way behind them all, casually circles back with a look on her face that says: ‘Meh. I didn’t want it anyway.’ This has got to be one of the best jobs in the world.

Director of the BBC Proms Roger Wright talks to Edwina Langley about concerts, composers and being terrible at the cello

Y

ou read words like ‘Controller’, ‘Director’, ‘BBC’, ‘Proms’ and you make assumptions. Terrifying ones. Because someone who has two roles, encompassing all four of these words, is surely a fearsome thing to behold. ‘If there is anything guaranteed to reduce my family to tears of laughter,’ says Roger Wright, Controller of BBC Radio 3 and also Director of the BBC Proms, ‘it’s me playing the cello. I don’t do it often because, well, with ritual humiliation there’s only so much you can take at any one time.’ See what I mean? Terrifying. Roger Wright, aka one of the most approachable and charismatic men I have probably ever met, has had music flowing through his veins since infancy. At just 12 years old he rang up BBC Radio 3 to request Delius’ Piano Concerto – 23

26/07/2013 15:58

ART&CULTURE the studio managing, I present all the concerts, I do all the camera work… ‘No, it’s a huge team effort,’ he laughs, placating Camilla, the lovely BBC Proms Communications Manager sitting next to him. ‘It’s a £9million festival and has a 118 year heritage so it’s a big operation. In a way it’s much easier to have my hand on the Radio 3 and Proms tiller simultaneously, because there are all sorts of things that overlap.’ We are sitting in a small meeting room in the rabbit warren that is BBC Broadcasting House, just days before the start of this year’s Proms. That Roger could spare one minute for me, let alone an hour, was yet another reason

Something more than musical passion must inspire such dedication. ‘I absolutely love programme building,’ he says, intensely. ‘Some say it’s an obsession of mine. We never start with a blank sheet of paper. It’s about the interweaving of the music industry as a whole – who’s touring when and what repertoire they can offer. The best moments are those where you feel an artist is really ready to focus on something. Like this year with conductor and pianist, Daniel Barenboim. I noticed a laser-like attention to detail. But you’ve got to find the right moment to approach these artists. Because if they’re about to go off and rehearse a big Wagner opera, the only thing you would expect them to be thinking of is that Wagner opera.’ Roger huffs. ‘These people have brains so unlike normal people. When you hear them rehearsing in five or six different languages, from memory, you just think, ‘That’s just not fair. I am now so clearly aware of my own human frailty and inadequacy.’’ If Roger feels this way I am slightly relived that I – a bona fide ‘normal person’ – seldom has direct access to such talent. We go on to have an excellent discussion about ‘Britishness,’ how Roger feels it’s important to get neglected British pieces back into the Proms, ‘to give people the opportunity to sample them.’ I could have chatted for hours but conscious that each minute took us closer to the First Night I (reluctantly) thought it best to release him. I wrapped up by asking what he was most looking forward to – the Wagner, the Verdi, the Britten? He shuffled a bit in his chair and said flatly, ‘the start and the finish.’ A very pragmatic response. Though could I really expect him to single out one performance when there are sure to be so many of note? It’s only appropriate that a man who is a Controller, Director, classical music aficionado, sports fan and a jolly nice person to boot, should have time for them all. © CHRIS CHRISTODOULOU

a piece I hadn’t heard of at 12 years old and I hasten to add, hadn’t heard of as an adult either. ‘I remember working out that if you asked for something that wasn’t too long, you had a better chance,’ he says. ‘If you requested something that was unusual, you had a better chance too. I’d heard about Delius but never heard his Piano Concerto. When it was played I remember recording it with a little microphone stuck into a cassette player, to the sound of a lawn mower and cars passing in the background.’ Mancunian through and through, Roger attended Chetham’s (now the School of Music) where his passion for music developed. He was encouraged by dedicated teachers who introduced him to offsyllabus pieces, allowing him free access to the otherwise daunting world of classical music. Saturdays were spent at orchestra practice or in the Henry Watson Music Library (though he insists I add they were also spent on the rugby field and cricket pitches) and the Radio Times featured heavily throughout his youth. He may have been ‘really, really bad’ at cello, but his innate love of music was there from the start. Fresh from the Royal Holloway, University of London, Roger entered into working life in 1978 as a freelance writer and broadcaster. He took on the role of Senior Producer for the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1986, and later enjoyed stints abroad – with the Cleveland Orchestra USA and at A&R Deutsche Grammophon in Hamburg. He returned to the UK in 1997 to take up ‘Head of BBC Classical Music’ and the following year, was made Controller of BBC Radio 3. In 2007 he added ‘Director of The BBC Proms’ to his already impressive, rather mammoth, list of achievements. A seemingly impossible task to juggle both roles, one can only imagine the legion of staff he has at his disposal. ‘No, I do everything single-handedly,’ he quips. ‘I have no help at all. I play all the concerts myself, I run the box office, I do all

to admire the fellow. ‘At the moment we’re actually planning the 2015 Proms. It’s just absurd. I could be having an urgent conversation with someone about next week’s festival and then straight after, have an equally important conversation with someone else about the Proms in 2015.’ He attends every concert – ‘If all my great colleagues and I have planned them, the very least I can do is turn up myself!’ – and therefore writes off every summer – ‘Yes I miss being with my family, and also the Ashes, but what a pleasure to be listening to it all.’

AN

EDUCATION Amanda Constance gives her top ten tips on finding the right school

W

a Plan B. Henrietta Barnett, for example, has ten children competing for every one place, whereas most London private schools have just four children for every one place.

hether your child is still in utero (yes, really) or just switching schools for A-levels, these ten tips will help you find the right school for your child.

9

No decision is finite. ‘There are many official transition points,’ says Freedman, ‘such as at three to four years, seven, eleven, 13 and 16, but it can often be easier to move your child mid-term.’

1

Plan ahead. According to Lisa Freedman, Managing Director of independent educational consultancy At The School Gates, lack of planning is the biggest mistake parents tend to make. She also reveals that she has some clients who start thinking about schooling before their child is even a twinkle in his father’s eye. ‘People who succeed are those who plan from birth,’ says Freedman, who believes this to be highly sensible. ‘Getting your child into the right school early helps as one school does tend to lead to another.’

10

If your child is at a state primary and you want them to get into a good state secondary in London, Freedman’s advice is straightforward. ‘Move to within one kilometre of the school, go to the local church and coach!’ At The School Gates, 020 8341 6463; attheschoolgates.co.uk

2

Be very aware of deadlines. When registering, remember that every school is different, so don’t get caught out. Many schools, for example, only take children who are registered in their first year of birth. Phone and find out.

3

Read the admissions criteria. It would be a shame not to get your child in because you haven’t read the small print.

4

Don’t worry! There is great anxiety surrounding schooling, particularly with parents starting their 3-4 year olds on the independent education escalator in hyper-competitive London. ‘Don’t feel it is the end of the world if your child doesn’t get in to the school of his choice at this age,’ says Freedman. ‘Most London prep schools are really very good.’

5

If you want to be sure of a place at a London prep school, go for an academically non-selective one such as Norland Place, Wetherby or Pembridge Hall. With schools like

this, it’s simply a case of first come, first served. ‘Some of the best preps are still non-selective’, says Freedman, ‘so it’s just a case of getting there first.’

Cranmore School

6

If you’ve got a boy in Years 5 or 6, consider boarding. There is a shortage in supply for secondary transfer in London, especially for boys, due to the fact that historically they were sent away to boarding schools. The number of places for boys in the capital’s schools has also recently decreased, as more previously boys-only schools, such as Latymer Upper, are now co-ed.

L

7

ooking for a prep school for your son but want to avoid the competitive capital? Cranmore, a single-sex prep school in Surrey, was rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted earlier this year, making it a more-than-attractive alternative for London parents.

8

Cranmore School, Epsom Road, West Horsley, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT24 6AT, 01483 280340; cranmoreprep.co.uk

If you are moving your child from a state primary to an independent secondary school, start coaching in Year 5 to ensure success.

Go for grammar, but have a private back up. London has some superb grammar schools but beware, most grammars are highly selective and start the vetting process early – be prepared by Year 5. And you need

NEW NEIGHBOUR Not that we’re surprised but due to the success of Charlotte Taylor’s recent Chelsea pop-up, it looks like she’s here to stay. BOUTIQUE~IN~BRIEF | HEIDI KLEIN THE IDEA If you don’t own a Heidi Klein swimsuit or bikini yet then you’re in for a treat. The shopping experience, with the boutique’s St. Tropez bar-esque white-washed walls and woodpanelled boardwalk light display (acting as the only interruption to the pristine décor) is reason alone to visit.

THE USP The thought and detail that has gone into each piece is not obvious until you try one. It’s then you realise: the scalloped edge gives it its pizazz, the height of the material on the hip makes your legs look longer and the barely-there padding or underwiring makes you look like you’ve got the perfect pair.

THE BUY The best thing about HK is that each print comes in a variety of styles to suit whichever body shape you are. Not only this, but you can buy tops and bottoms separate so really it’s your choice which one you pick. 257 Pavilion Road, SW1, 020 7259 9418; heidiklein.com

YOU’VE GOT TO BE

G INNES GU INNESS TO WIN IT

Alice Milner chats modeling, motherhood and The Magnolia Cup with Jasmine Guinness

photographers such as Mario Testino and Bruce Webber. Modelling from the age of 19, Jasmine’s enviously long legs and rich brown locks have had fashion houses from Burberry to Armani inviting her to grace the catwalks and head up their campaigns. Those were the days, spent living on the King’s Road – ‘a beautiful part of London with wonderful green spaces’ – travelling and meeting oodles of fascinating people, who remain her close friends

‘One trait that all the most successful Guinnesses have,’ says Jasmine Guinness, ‘is they work incredibly hard, keep their feet on the ground and do a lot for their fellow man.’ Spoken like a true Irishwoman. As a model, mother, fashion designer and toyshop owner, Jasmine is seemingly ‘Guinness’ through and through. Born in Dublin in 1976, the great granddaughter of Diana Mitford and Bryan Guinness, it’s safe to say Jasmine has a fascinating family tree. Her 18th century ancestor, Arthur Edie Campbell & Sara Cox Guinness, first brewed the iconic dry stout which proudly bears the family name and her relation today. ‘I had lots of proud moments,’ Daphne Guinness’ outré style she recalls, ‘and I especially loved has captured the imagination of the creative collaboration some the fashion industry. It seems the photographers allowed you.’ Guinnesses can’t help but make an Yes there were times when it impact in every sphere they enter. was lonely and ‘very dull’ – she Jasmine inherited the Mitford’s counts being alone most of the time arresting blue eyes, which as the biggest challenge – but the have captivated world class creations she wore kept her endlessly

entertained. ‘The most daring piece was a flamboyant Julien Macdonald feathery thing. It was amazing. But on the catwalk I wore all sorts of frightening things – you simply couldn’t say ‘no’ to the designers.’ Whilst notorious for her pillar-box red lipstick, Jasmine’s own wardrobe is far from uniform. ‘My style is oldfashioned, modern, skater, ladylike, country, disco, eclectic! I love all clothes and I think my style reflects that. There are so many demands on our time now that we cannot constantly change our wardrobes, we need them to be versatile.’ Jasmine’s trusty Smythson diary keeps her busy life in check, making sure she’s in work on time to run her charming Notting Hill toyshop ‘Honeyjam’. Here, Jasmine (‘Jam’) and her friend Honey sell handsome quality toys that she hopes ‘won’t end up in landfill sites.’ Though she now lives between London and Wales, there’s only one place Jasmine truly considers home: Ireland. ‘If you are born in Ireland it is not just a connection, it’s in your heart and soul. It sounds silly but we

are a very patriotic nation and we are very proud of where we come from.’ When she isn’t working, she’s spending quality time with her childhood sweetheart and husband, Gawain, and their three young children. ‘Motherhood has changed everything about me,’ she says frankly. ‘I have had to learn patience. It is very challenging sometimes but when they turn around and tell you they love you, it all seems worthwhile.’ I wonder if she ever relaxes? ‘I love reading, sleeping and drinking tea but with three kids, no, I don’t get to do it often. Though having said that, I went for a gallop the other day at a friend’s house, having not ridden for years. I felt like a teenager again. It blew out all the cobwebs and reminded me how much energy and excitement horse riding can give you.’ So it should come as no surprise then, that her next project should rather heavily feature horses. Not the riding of them, no, Jasmine has a rather more fashionable involvement. She has been asked to design the silks for a mystery celebrity rider in The Magnolia Cup at this year’s Glorious Goodwood. ‘I’ve no idea who I’m designing for,’ she insists, ‘but it was very exciting to see model Edie Campbell, dressed in my colours having won the first Magnolia Cup in 2011. That’s when I first got involved. They asked me to design some silks and I jumped at the chance. ‘I grew up in Ireland and racing is in our blood so designing silks has been a lifelong dream. I remember being mesmerised by the colours in Racing Post and The Irish Field, trying to figure out who would win based solely on who was wearing what.’ I’m left eagerly awaiting Jasmine’s vibrant silks, knowing that if the Guinness family’s successful track record is anything to go by, I’ll be placing my bets on the winning horse. 26/07/2013 12:04

STYLE Absolutely: Tell us how you got into fashion. We read you used to pick apart shirts in your parents’ garage, is this true? Robert Emmett: The answer will make you laugh. As a young boy I wanted to have shirts with different materials in them, almost like a patchwork. Then I wanted to design shirts with different elements to them. In order to do this I had to take one or two apart so that I could have a pattern from which to start with. While I was making shirts, my friends were playing cricket. My first shop was in a garage in Zurich, Switzerland – that is perhaps what you are referring to.

Abs: You’re striding down the King’s Road to check up on your shop. What are you wearing? RE: Light grey cool wool trousers, a checked linen and wool jacket and the best white shirt in London – the cotton is from the Delta Nile in Egypt, woven by one of the greatest mills in the world in Bergamo, Northern Italy. The shirt itself is made in Tuscany, where traditions have existed for centuries. I would probably be smiling too.

Abs: Where are Emmett London shirts made? RE: The type of shirt (be it formal or casual, washed or not, linen, cotton or cashmere) will dictate where the material is sent – to Italy, Poland, Turkey or Morocco. Abs: In your opinion, what should a ‘good shirt’ consist of? RE: Like in the kitchen, where good raw ingredients make for great food, cotton from the world’s best mills, made

Abs: If you hadn’t gone into tailoring you would have been a… RE: DENTIST. At the age of 18 all your teachers ask what do you want to do, so you can apply to the right university. I had no idea what I wanted to do and at the time, I didn’t think that my hobby would turn into a profession. So I said to them I would apply to be a dentist. That was quite enough to keep them quiet.

Abs: How do you manage to continue finding ‘inspiration’ for what seems a fairly simple garment to design? RE: The painter, the landscape gardener, the cook, the mountaineer... most things have already been done, or have they? Has the popularity of programmes such as Mad Men helped to boost your business? RE: All programmes and films where you see elegantly dressed men have a positive impact on our business. Abs: Who in the public eye would you like wear your shirts? RE: 50% of the population, i.e. all men! Or if you prefer: Daniel Craig, Jude Law, Ewan McGregor and all the other great modern idols.

Abs: Where did you train to become a tailor? RE: I trained with a great tailor in Geneva. Why Geneva? Well, after finishing school, I wanted to learn French, so I went to the French-speaking part of Switzerland. One day while walking through the old town in Geneva, I came across this lovely old tailor and his atelier. I asked if I could stay for a few days to observe how he worked. I ended up staying two and a half years! Abs: How did you go about setting up Emmett London? RE: As I mentioned, I opened my first shop in a garage underneath where I lived in Zurich. After six months, I realised I needed somewhere that had more people passing by the front door. I told myself to either head to the middle of Zurich or London. So off I went to London.

return for more! It is not always easy from sight alone, but when you wear it, you get it.

Abs: You’ve now extended your business to accessories. What are your favourites to design? RE: Cufflinks. I guess because it allows me to become a sculptor of sorts. Abs: Why did you choose the King’s Road for your flagship Emmett London store? RE: At the time there were many other fashion brands here and it was all I could afford. Abs: Do you visit the shop often? RE: Daily. Abs: Would you ever wear a T-shirt? RE: Last June I was by the Dead Sea in Jordan. It was 48°C. I wore a T-shirt. Abs: What other fashion designers do you admire? RE: I am quite a classical old soul. I like Boglioli from Italy for jackets and Slowear from Italy for trousers. My shoes are from Andrea Venturi – as you can see, I do like these little Italian manufactures who I think do a fabulous job at what they specialise in.

by masters who have been crafting for years, make the best shirts. The size is critical too, it must fit. We offer three: classical, the tailored version (which has several inches off the waist) and then the slim, which is narrower everywhere. Abs: Most men can’t tell the difference between one shirt and another. You obviously can. How? RE: Through the fell of the cloth. The first time someone buys from us, they usually buy one shirt. They then wear it, feel the cloth and soon after

Abs: You have two other stores – in the City and on Jermyn Street. Are you expanding anywhere else? We read whisperings of Canary Wharf or the Far East? RE: Canary Wharf in November. I would love to open in the Far East but like a marriage you need to find the right partner…

A GREAT CATCH

We’re ignoring what Otis Ferry says about ‘skill’, if we don’t catch a fish this summer it’s the rod’s fault. Unless we’re holding a Saltwater Series Outfit from Farlows (in which case, no excuses). SPA REVIEW GENTLEMEN’S T O N I C

here comes a stage in every man’s beard where he starts to look like a fur trapper from the Rockies. Mine came yesterday, so I decided to do something about it. I arrived at Gentlemen’s Tonic to find barbers armed with at least six different kinds

of trimmer, designed to tame even the grizzliest of chin growths. A snap of some scissors and a moisturising scrub later, my jawline was restored to me. Next up, a manicure – it felt right, dammit. In no time at all, my hands (like my face) felt part of me once again. I’m not

sure what happened in that Mayfair temple of marble and leather, but I can safely say, I emerged a new man. By Simon Moore Beard and Hair Design for £35, Bespoke Hand Treatment for £48. 31a Bruton Place, W1, 020 7297 4343; gentlemenstonic.com

THE GOOD Noble Macmillan Brand Ambassador and huntsman, Otis Ferry, talks salmon psychology and why driven shoots are too easy to Edwina Langley

50

26/07/2013 16:16

ART&CULTURE

Edwina Langley: Noble Macmillan describes you as the ‘Classic English Gentleman’. What do you think about this? Otis Ferry: I would say they’re

completely mad. EL: Why did you agree to be their Brand Ambassador in particular? OF: I’ve never really done anything like

this before. And I’m pretty against doing it normally. But they seemed very honest and their hearts’ in the right place. They design products which are high quality and also practical. They had this roll up travel backgammon board which I thought was ingenious. And many other things that weren’t gimmicky. EL: You’ve designed leather bound fishing books for them, is that right? OF: We’re in discussion about it – their

products are beautifully made. They have many great ideas and because I’m a fisherman and enjoy shooting, I can see obvious flaws or parts of the books which haven’t been designed properly. My notes include observations such as ‘unusual categories’, ones that omit what most fisherman would consider vital factors, such as the water height and condition – silly little things like that. Very boring to people who don’t go fishing but I wanted to offer my experience. EL: I’m pants at fishing. To me, it’s an activity that requires sitting by a river, enjoying the scenery with no or little success. Is there actually lots of skill involved? OF: A lot of my friends are interested in

country sports like racing and shooting, but consider fishing incredibly boring –

as you say, ‘a way of spending the day by a river.’ I often ask them to come fishing with me, but they turn their noses up because they think there isn’t enough action and it’s not exiting. Whereas I find it far more exciting than shooting or racing because you really have to do it all yourself. With shooting, in a lot of cases, you’re placed on a peg and everything’s given to you on a tray. Whereas with fishing, you’ve really got to study the pools and the fish for yourself. There’s a very big difference between being a good fisherman and being a bad fisherman. There are so many factors to consider.... Oh, I don’t know [sighs]. It’s a very odd one. I keep trying to get my girlfriend [model, Edie Campbell] to come fishing, but she point-blank refuses. She thinks it’s too dull. But I’ve said, ‘when you catch your first salmon, you will totally understand it.’ EL: Yes but some people wait years for that and still never catch their first salmon and therefore they’ll never understand... OF: Yes, well that’s it, a valid point. It

becomes a huge challenge because it’s possible to spend years trying and not succeeding. And that’s why, if you study the form (as you do in racing) and work out exactly where your best chances are before you go to the river (get into the psyche of the salmon, where they will be, what they’ll be feeling, what the temperature is, what the cloud cover’s like) you will be successful. There are those people who catch a hell of a lot more salmon than others and there’s a reason for that. That’s why I find it so fascinating, because it’s a real challenge. 51

ART&CULTURE El: You have a house in Shropshire – do you go fishing there? OF: I go fishing wherever I can sneak my

way into. I recently fished in Wales and caught my first sea bass. Delicious, right on the beach, very exciting. I caught it with my salmon rod. EL: You are Master of the South Shropshire Hunt. What does that role entail exactly? OF: Running around. El: Come on… so you get up, walk the hounds everyday, continue... OF: We don’t walk out the hounds every

day, we try to walk them out four days a week. I would walk them out everyday but sometimes I’m away. It mainly involves liaising with the landowners and farmers – picking days in the calendar where we can hunt on their land. So, a huge amount of PR and organising. And then delegating the other roles. There are seven or eight people directly involved in running a hunt. People who look after the horses, those who run the hounds and those who maintain the country. So last week, I was trying to find access points we need to improve – speaking to farmers about putting gates in their field or their neighbour’s field. In most cases the farmers are very helpful and agree to help out. But sometimes they don’t, in which case you need to find another solution. El: What is it that you love about hunting? OF: I think it just has everything about

life that I am passionate about. It has a very close connection with being outdoors. And there is a very strong bond between huntsman and hound – a huge tie to nature. There’s also the obvious adrenalin and excitement involved in the riding and something very satisfying about doing a good job, about being an entertainer, and people really appreciating the day out. EL: It’s got you into a few pickles in the past. Has it really been worth it? OF: Well, I don’t know. If you’re asking

me if I could have led my life differently, I don’t know if I necessarily would. No one likes getting into trouble and there have been several episodes in my life I could have easily done without. But I am very fortunate to do what I do.

EL: Describe a typical country day OF: At the moment? EL: Yup! OF: I get up at 6:30am and I either get

a lift to the kennels or my whipper-in lorries the hounds over to my house. We then get on our bicycles, unload the 70-80 hounds (depending on how many we’re exercising) and take them on a two or three hour bicycle ride. We show them various sights and sounds and introduce them to livestock. We take them through villages so they get used to people and cars too. The idea is to get the hounds fit, slowly but surely. Then I’ll have breakfast and do a bit of admin. I try to get out a lot. I have a new joint master so I might take her round and introduce her to a few farmers in the area. What else would I do? God, it’s quite a difficult question. Not sit back and watch Jeremy Kyle if that’s what you’re thinking! EL: Never! Onto shooting. I only enjoy shooting when I’m beating. Otherwise I find it rather tiresome. Do you like driven shoots? OF: I do like shooting. There’s obviously

the thrill in displaying your own accuracy and being good at something. However, on most shoots you’re babysat throughout the entire thing. Take, for example, stalking. It’s not you that’s

doing the stalking, it’s the keeper. ‘Hush now,’ ‘creep down there’, ‘come this way,’ they say. For me, I’d want to be shown the hillside and left to get on with it. I’d feel I was actually achieving something. EL: Do you feel the same about shooting? OF: Yes. It’s obviously great fun to be in

the middle of a huge flush, no one can say that’s not exciting. But there’s so much standing around, so much eating and drinking and scoffing… It’s always a fun day but it doesn’t compare to hunting where you use your own initiative. You’re placed on a peg and it’s just a bit easy. EL: I personally find those shoots where rows and rows of birds fly over in their hundreds quite nauseating. OF: Yes, when it’s delivered to you on a

plate. I am not downplaying it because of the cruelty aspect, but because it doesn’t involve much skill or initiative. I just don’t find it sporting. EL: You have said in the past you love animals more than people. Do you still think this? OF: Umm, I’m trying. But yes, I’d say that

still applies. Otis Ferry is Noble Macmillan’s Brand Ambassador. 9 Elvaston Mews, SW7, 020 7581 4178; noblemacmillan.com 53

BEAUTY

NURTURED BY NATURE

CONFIDENTIAL Protect, pamper and love your body

Beauty expert, Pia Stanchina, on the beauty of happiness udrey Hepburn once said, ‘I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.’ Seeing as she remains a beauty and fashion icon over two decades after her death, I can safely say I trust her judgement. Nevertheless, most of us don’t search for happiness to make ourselves look and feel beautiful. We do the opposite – believe that by looking prettier, we have a better shot at achieving happiness. With this in mind, I have been making an effort to focus on activities that make me happy rather than products that make my hair and face look good. On my way home from work today, I felt an urge to lie in the grass in Hyde Park. In line with my new attitude, I did. Listening to the rustling of the leaves and marvelling at the blue skies above, I found the tension of the day ebbing away after just a few deep breaths. For the first time today, I felt fully present in the moment and grounded in myself, thinking neither of the past nor the future, just viscerally awed by the beauty of the nature around me. When I got home, my face was relaxed, my cheeks flushed and my eyes bright. I say it’s official: nature + happiness = youth + beauty. Simple!

THE DIRECTOR OF

DESIGN Daniel Kostiuc, Lead Designer of award-winning studio Intarya, talks hard work, history and branching out to Brazil PHOTOGRAPHY BY R ICHARD WAITE

64

Intarya.indd 64

26/07/2013 10:56

Absolutely: So Daniel, Intarya has been described as one of London’s leading interior design companies how does that make you feel? Daniel Kostiuc: So proud! We’ve been able to work with amazing clients who really trust our ability to create interiors that suit their lifestyle. We love working with clients who understand that luxury doesn’t just relate to brand or price tag – it relates most of all to quality, style and provenance. Over the years, we have built a reputation for achieving the best for our clients, who can expect interiors that are glamorous and yet understated, with ‘quality’ as the watchword. Abs: You must really love interiors! Have you always loved them – did you crayon your bedroom walls as a child, that sort of thing? DK: I always knew I wanted to work in a creative field. As a child, I loved to re-organize the house and always had my opinions about furniture, fashion, colours and fabrics (much to my parents’ annoyance!). My grandfather worked in the field of decoration and furniture design, so I think passion for design is in my blood.

Abs: Where did you grow up? DK: I grew up in Brazil and left for London at the age of 17 with the intention of studying English for six months and then going back. I fell in love with this city and decided to stay and go to college here. I studied New Media and worked in that field for a few years in London, after graduating. Abs: You studied interior architecture at UCLA – is this right? DK: Yes, that’s right. Having renovated my house in London, I received many compliments. A designer friend of mine came to visit and after seeing what I had done with my house, he invited me to work with him. After a few months, I realised that despite having an aptitude for design, I lacked theoretical knowledge. I did a lot of research and decided to move to Los Angeles to attend UCLA’s postgraduate degree in Interior Architecture.

I ALWAYS KNEW I WANTED TO WORK IN A CREATIVE FIELD

worked on a few projects before starting the degree, I had some knowledge of the ins and outs of conceptualising, running projects, and the business aspect of Interior Design. What I had to concentrate on was the more ‘bookish’ parts of the course – History of Art, Cad and Colour Theory. They were really fun to do, but definitely a learning curve. Abs: What happened after you graduated from there? DK: I had done a number of internships with very reputable designers in Los Angeles during my degree. At the end

Abs: Were you a studious student or one of those ‘annoying’ people who did precisely zero work and came out with straight As? DK: A bit of both, really. Because of my previous experience, having

together. I have a very handson approach and lead the team from creating design concepts, furniture designs (we design about 80% of the furniture we install), colour and material direction, to choosing the art and some of the accessories. Abs: You’ve worked on five-star resorts, hotels and properties worldwide. Does the country in which a property is built inspire you – or is it just the architecture of the building itself? DK: The location and architecture of any building - be it a resort, hotel, house or apartment - are very important to the interior design. I think it is vital to be mindful of those things, even when the design is going to contrast with the local style or perhaps, the architecture. Abs: How would you describe your own style? We’re fascinated to know what your interiors at home are like, can you tell us? DK: I guess my style is quite eclectic. When designing for myself, I like to create a sense of space by using light colours with simple shapes and contrasting them with antiques and some vintage furniture and accessories. I like the lived in feel, so I am very anti-minimalist, but clutter is something I really hate, so storage is essential (I have concealed storage everywhere). I also like my home to feel warm and cozy, so I have a lot of family pictures and art that has meaning to me.

of the course, during my thesis module, my professor offered me a position in his hospitality design company, so I had a job offer before graduating, which was great. I worked with him for a couple of years before being headhunted by a very high profile LA designer. Those experiences were completely invaluable. Abs: Tell us about how you got involved in Intarya and your role in the company. DK: After working in LA for a few years, I felt it was time to return to London. I joined Intarya as

I REALLY LIKE VINTAGE OR HISTORICAL REFERENCING IN MY DESIGNS

Creative Director in 2009 and have been Managing Director since the beginning of 2012. I am the main point of contact for all our clients and I am constantly involved with the creative process. Working with clients at the top of their game, I believe it is essential that I take personal responsibility for each project, from beginning to end. The only way I can do that is by understanding the client’s requirements and staying connected with the design, construction and manufacturing processes, as well as the final touches that bring the project

Abs: What is your studio like? How do you like to work? DK: We have an awesome space right by the river, with large windows, lots of glass and natural light. I think natural light is essential for creativity. My team and I work in a very collaborative way, so we are always bouncing off ideas and creating designs together. I have a very close relationship with my team – they are very talented and experienced, and share my passion for design and for giving our clients the best possible results. We are currently a team of 14 including designers, architects, design assistants and support staff.

Abs: How do you define the concept for a new project? DK: At the initial meetings with our clients. We begin to understand their tastes, lifestyle and the function of each room in the house or apartment. It is with this information that we begin to create the concept of each new project. I think it’s essential that each project is unique and specific to the client, so it’s actually the client who defines the concept. It’s then our job to transform the client’s wishes into reality. Abs: What would you say are your main sources of inspiration? DK: I would say history. I really like vintage or historical referencing in my designs, even in contemporary projects. I think historical referencing (even if subtle) gives credibility to an environment and creates timeless interiors. I am also inspired by art and fashion, with much of my design inspiration coming from the runway. Abs: What do you like doing in your spare time? DK: I really enjoy going to the theatre, ballet and art galleries. I love traveling, seeing new places, and from time to time I like to spend a few days by the sea. Abs: What are your plans for the rest of this year and the future? DK: We have a number of projects that I am extremely excited about that will be completed in 2013. Another very exciting prospect

for 2014 is the opening of our new office in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Having my roots in Brazil (added to the economic improvements the country has seen over the last few years and the increased real

I BELIEVE IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT I TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR EACH PROJECT

estate values in the main cities) has meant that it is the perfect location for Intarya to extend its reach. We have, for a few years, worked on a number of projects outside the UK, but Brazil will be the first country where Intarya has a fully-fledged location. But in the beginning, the plan is for most of the design work to continue to come from our main studio in London, while the Sao Paulo office will take care of the projects on the ground. Over the next three to five years, the intention is to further increase our reach internationally – both in terms of interior design services and the design and manufacturing of furniture, lighting and textiles.

FOOD&TRAVEL RESTAURANT

Review

Edwina Langley slaps her friend for a chip at Bumpkin

Bumpkin Chelsea I ’m a country bumpkin at heart so for a Country Pursuits Special it seemed only right and proper that I should visit the newly opened Bumpkin restaurant in Chelsea. Much like its South Ken cousin, Bumpkin Chelsea serves up comforting English dishes in an environment reminiscent of a country

gastropub. I took three of my dearest friends to revel in a feast of Britishness and salute the fact the weather was such that it wasn’t a mini British endurance test to eat outside. Upon arrival, all three of my friends announced they simply must leave the table to go to the loo – to admire the interiors, I’m sure, and nothing whatsoever to do

with the fact esteemed British designer, Matthew Williamson, was propping up the bar en route... After a cooling ‘English Garden’ cocktail – like quaffing a sweet medicine of mint – and delicious slices of a pizza-like flatbread, our starters arrived. ‘Smoked Salmon with Roasted Fennel and Orange’, and ‘Tempura of Summer Baby Vegetables’ with homemade ketchup. As was indicated, the smoked salmon was smoked and the tempura was crisp – much enjoyed by my friend Camilla, who is a self-professed ‘batter’ expert. Sticking with our fish and veg theme (we were trying to be healthy) mains consisted of ‘Pan Fried Sea Bass’, ‘Roast Cod and Scorched Cauliflower’, and ‘Garlic Prawn, Scallop and Monkfish Skewers’, served up with chips, and beans ‘n’ peas bathed in butter. I quickly abandoned my ‘pledge to

health’ following a chomp on a chip for although they were a little dry and slightly burnt, as I ploughed through the bucket (slapping away the hand my friend Ed) it occurred to me that clearly it didn’t matter. A short break between main and pudding followed – the restaurant was packed – before Marshmallows and Grilled Strawberries, and also a delicious chocolate moussey thing flew their way to our table. Pudding aficionado Alex hogged the chocolate plate, leaving me to battle Camilla for the strawberries. I think I won, for when I got home I found strawberry juice stuck to my elbow. If you want to battle your friends for delicious, British dishes, make sure you bump into Bumpkin.

FOOD&TRAVEL THE FARM

Situated in the heart of Devon, Aller Farm’s main export is milk and, as a result, the surrounding fields are full of cows whose gentle lowing, alongside the song of birds, becomes part of the background noise – a distinct improvement on city traffic. The entire place has an incredibly welcoming feel, enhanced by the warmness of our host, Emma, who takes us on a tour and shows us the larder full of milk straight from the cow and fresh eggs. The tents are a set away from the farmhouse in two small clusters, but are private enough that they feel peaceful.

ALLER FARM Devon THE VIBE

The most striking thing about Aller Farm is that, although it is easy to see how wonderful it is for families, there is also a definite appeal for young couples and groups of friends wanting to get back to nature. The absence of technology, the excitement of successfully lighting the stove, the romance of the paraffin lanterns, all accompanied by a glass of wine makes this the perfect escape for a city-weary clutch of friends just as much as families. Refreshing and adventurous with the massive advantage of being entirely comfortable, ‘glamping’ truly is the answer.

THE LOWDOWN

THE TENT

This is camping unlike any you have experienced before. If the thought of erecting a tent, not showering for four days and sleeping on the cold ground makes you shudder, but you are still in love with the romantic idea of a rural getaway, then ‘glamping’ might just be for you. The tents laid on at Feather Down Farms (although ‘tent’ doesn’t do them justice) are cabin-like in appearance and each contains a master bedroom, a bunk bed room and a cupboard bed (all of which can be pre-made if you so wish) as well as a working lavatory, woodburning stove (which warms the entire tent), a sink with running water and dining table. The decor is on the right side of twee and the rustic metal mugs and hearts carved out of the shutters are the perfect finishing flourishes.

Activities abound and include the opportunity to assist in the milking, feeding one of the young calves – the current calf is called Doris – by hand and retrieving eggs from the coup. The surrounding countryside is festooned with footpaths so there are countless walking opportunities. Closer to the tents is a small stream in which young children can build dams and adults can chill wine. A brick oven provides the perfect place for cooking pizzas and sitting around telling ghost stories before walking back to your cosy cupboard bed.

THE DAMAGE

Very reasonable, especially for a group. Prices start from £245 for a midweek stay (Monday-Friday).

There are 7 tents in total (2 are frills tents) and each tent sleeps 6 (max. 5 adults); featherdown.co.uk

Lions, elephants and giraffes, oh my! Michael Kallenbach explores the wild wilderness of the Tanzanian Serengeti on horseback

I

t was our first morning riding to the Explore Camp and we had been up since the crack of dawn. There we were, in the middle of the Serengeti plains, not far from the banks of the Grumeti River, and we had already begun to ache. By lunchtime, we needed a break; our joints, not used to the fast cantering alongside giraffes, elephants and topis, were sore – yet the horses were fit and ready to go on. We dismounted and suddenly our grooms appeared, there to lead the horses to water and feed. For our part, we plonked ourselves in luxurious khaki chairs allowing

the spring sunshine to fall on our faces. There were four riders in our group – Sophy, Eve, Lucinda and myself. I had been on several riding holidays in Africa before so while I thought I knew what to expect, I had never imagined such luxury and comfort would come my way. Lucinda, the weakest rider in our group, quickly decided that she wasn’t up to the fast pace of the horses. Instead, she opted to go by lorry and sat in the comfort of a Jeep as she viewed the game, while one of the backup guides had little difficulty in leading her horse alongside his. The mobile tents at Explore had been set up prior to our

arrival, where an array of dainty tea cakes were waiting for us – similar to those exquisite creations served at Fortnum and Mason – with cocktails of cranberry juice and ginger ale. We were given a typically warm South African greeting by Julius Schuld, the manager of the camp, and Ian Boucher, chef extraordinaire. Originally from Cape Town, Ian was the first to admit that he is ‘dead scared’ of lions and hoped they never come near his tent at night. But despite this phobia, at mealtimes he is fearless, proudly announcing what he has prepared for dinner, which he sources using fresh locally grown ingredients. ‘You will get carrot soup,’ he eagerly explained, ‘but not with caviar.’ It was hard to imagine anyone in our group expecting caviar, yet the spacious tents themselves were so luxurious – fluffy towels and dressing

I ALSO SPOTTED A WHISTLE NEXT TO OUR BED IN CASE A LION APPEARED

gowns, hot running water and a flushing lavatory – it led you to believe anything was possible. Our mobile camp even has its own electricity. I then spotted a whistle next to my bed for if I suddenly imagined a lion had come to snuggle up next to me in the night. But as Julius assured us soon after arrival, ‘No one has ever had a use for it.’ In any event, a guard stands watch over our tents every night from dawn to dusk, so there’s really nothing to fear.

FOOD&TRAVEL

Of course, we were all there for the riding, not to snuggle up with lions. The horse I was allocated was called Katavi, so named after the country’s third largest national park located along the rift escarpment in the west of Tanzania. A proud 17 hand ex-eventer, that was bought from a dealer in Johannesburg, Katavi had come via a spell in Zimbabwe to join his other Swahili-named stable mates. As we cantered through the short brown grass, darting in between the fallen acacia trees, Katavi and I quickly bonded. This was his first safari, I was later to learn from one of our expert guides, the South African born, Alison Mundy. Having previously worked in Botswana and Zimbabwe, there is nothing about horses she doesn’t know. Ali is in charge of the stables and they are among the most immaculate and pristine I have

ever seen. What’s more, the horses are excellently cared for (their temperatures are taken twice a day and several grooms are on hand, able to double up as farriers if or when the need should arise). In our search for game we would often canter alongside giraffe, zebra, ostrich, eland and topi, a type of antelope similar to the hartebeest. We never came across lions or leopards, but thankfully this wasn’t my first – nor hopefully last – African horseback safari. After two nights at the Explore Camp, we rode onto Serengeti House for the final stretch of our horse safari, an exclusive-use retreat. There I was saddened to say farewell to Katavi who had carried me so safely on my adventures. There were a few consolations, however – we arrived at Serengeti House just before lunch and were magically able to witness about 20 elephants

drinking at the tiny pond 15 feet from where we were sitting. Later that afternoon, as I packed my bags getting ready to fly home, I was told by Gregory, one of the staff members, not to venture near my bungalow alone as an elephant was lurking outside. Armed for all eventualities, he accompanied me to safety so that I could retrieve my possessions. Two days later, he sent me an email. ‘The elephants didn’t show up again, but we did have an old buffalo – it charged one of the staff doing some maintenance work. But otherwise everything is fine and nobody was hurt.’

I smiled as I read this. That night I dreamed Katavi and I had cantered away from the elephants, out of trouble, back into safety and, of course, the lap of luxury. Seven night itinerary to Tanzania from £4,660 per person based on two people sharing including Kenyan Airways economy flights, full board accommodation (including three nights at Serengeti House), park fees and game drives/ rides. NOTES The Simple Life If your getaway means exactly that, getting away, head to North Beach Barbuda. The unspoiled Caribbean island frowns on iPhones, internet and jet skis – it’s about unadulterated tranquillity here. The exclusive five cottage hideaway is accessible only by boat and lies on pink-sanded beaches in the middle of nowhere. Perfect for the family or a small group of friends, you won’t see another soul – except perhaps owner Reuben James, who serves up delicious Caribbean cuisine (marinated lobster, banana pancakes) straight to your table, which we think is allowed.

Famous Grouse What’s most glorious about start of the grouse shooting season is that you get to eat the tender birds. The Costwold’s boutique pub, The Wheatsheaf Inn, is the place to go for this and the Game and Wine Night on 18th August is the time. But for those after action, we wholly advise hiring the entire inn for a shooting party later in the season. With 14 en suite bedrooms (and a chef on hand) there’s no place better to go with your posse in Glossy.

IN THEIR OWN

WORDS LISAJANE STRATTON

Manager: Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings’ Knightsbridge Office Photography: Richard Clark

I

have been involved in property for over 25 years, both in London and abroad, but it wasn’t my first career. I also worked for the NHS securing hospital re-development funding and I helped to launch the London Aquarium, for which I was nominated as a ‘Woman to Watch’ by Cosmopolitan magazine. But property is my real passion - and Chelsea and Knightsbridge have to be my favourite places to live and work. Tree-lined streets, stunning architecture, trend-setting bars, cafes, restaurants and designer boutiques, not forgetting the most famous shop of all – Harrods – this cosmopolitan area of London has it all. Knightsbridge attracts every nationality, ‘It Girls’, royalty, artists, designers and, yes, families too. The area has always been popular with London’s professionals, artists, and home to Prime Ministers, celebrity chefs, movie and rock stars, as well as our future queen, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Its pedigree is without question. One of my favourite places is St Luke’s Church, it has manicured gardens and stunning grounds where families can play under the weeping willows and giant oaks, overlooked by the magnificent steeple. Yards away is the King’s Road and Walton Street where you’ll find cafés like Jak’s, famed for its delicious salads and sandwiches and celebrity eateries such as Tom Aikens, Buddha Bar and San Lorenzo. You can share a drink with people from all walks of life at Bar Boulud and pubs like The Grenadier – or for late birds, Beauchamp Place offers the delectable Lebanese restaurant Maroush. This is a great place for families too, with Hyde Park and plenty of other open green spaces, while a trip to South Kensington’s Hummingbird Bakery is well worth it as little ones will delight in the cupcake of the day! When it comes to

shopping, you’re spoilt for choice. Joseph and Apostrophe are favourites of mine and Salt does fabulous beachwear. Give in to the temptation of the delicacies on offer at the Food Halls in Harrods and Harvey Nichols - or find yourself standing next to a celebrity while choosing your cornflakes in Waitrose! The area’s properties are exquisite, from grand Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian and Art Deco buildings to imposing, modern residences such as The Knightsbridge and One Hyde Park. Rents range from £300-£400pw for a studio, £400-£650pw for a one-bedroom, £700+ pw for a two bedroom apartment to £1350+pw for a mews property. As one of the capital’s wealthiest boroughs, homes can command rentals of well over £20,000pw! Europeans, particularly French, Italian and Spanish, as well as Russians, Americans and Middle Easterners, often choose to live here. Diplomats, Royal families, foreign students, expat executives and English families all make up the rich tapestry of the Borough. Naturally, rental demand is high. Studios are sought-after by students, one bed apartments are popular with young professionals and midrange, two bedroom properties with couples and sharers. We’re always busy with corporate tenants and relocation agents looking for family homes for overseas executives on secondment. Whether tenants have lived here all their lives, or have visited the area and fallen in love with it, Chelsea and Knightsbridge have a magnetic pull. Many wouldn’t dream of living anywhere else and the area continues to deliver a lifestyle not easily replicated anywhere else in London. 020 7581 2112; brlets.co.uk

Property I’d most like on my books and why? I love the apartments in Cadogan Gardens – they boast beautiful red brick period architecture, a hugely sought after garden square and an unbeatable location (just behind Harrods). Best place to invest? You can’t go wrong with property just off the infamous King’s Road. It’s always extremely popular with buyers and renters and has seen incredible capital growth over the last few years (12% last year, 10% in 2011 and 9% in 2010).

Associate Director, Bective Leslie Marsh

D&G Diary The most interesting property I have been involved in is... An unmodernised property in Beaufort Mansions, which had nine offers and we sold it for £100,000 over the asking price. The property was an excellent investment opportunity. The toughest sale and why? A house on Bramerton Street has recently undergone a difficult sale due to a very problematic chain, and in particular a tricky solicitor at the top of the chain, proving that recommended solicitors can really make a difference. It’s also a valuable lesson in working with a good estate agent who will pull out all of the stops to ensure the sale goes through with no hiccups. Helping to progress the sale as seamlessly as possible is our specialty! Finest property showcase... Rawlings Street is a beautiful example of a period townhouse with a contemporary twist. Situated in a prime SW3 street, it would be a fantastic investment.

ow do you feel about affordable housing? Despite previous DCLG incumbents insisting that developments should have a sizeable chunk of such housing there seems to be precious little appearing. Most areas of Chelsea DO have a pretty good mix of council and private housing and indeed according to planners I’ve spoken to, that’s the issue. When they interrogate a community about a planning application it’s common for respondents to bemoan any increase in affordable housing saying they feel there’s enough already, and this from a good social cross section, not just the well off. This means that in Chelsea there’s often a payment made in lieu which sounds contradictory but proves we live in a well balanced borough already.

e continue to stay busy even though we are in the summer months which traditionally can see the market soften. With this in mind, the usual approach of waiting for autumn to sell your property is not one to necessarily follow this year and we expect to see transaction levels continue to climb even through August. More and more buyers are having to be flexible on area due to the lack of property that is available and, as such, our reach as an agent, with 10 offices across London is proving to be invaluable to both buyers and vendors. Our strong networking culture among offices – especially with our newly opened Bloomsbury location – means we are regularly achieving record prices for our clients and are able to help more buyers find their next home in a shorter period of time.

1. Why did you choose this area to open your branch? Chelsea continues to attract consistent demand from affluent international buyers. With the advantage of having a 500 office global network we felt it was the perfect environment for us to expand in to the London market. 2. What is your company ethos? How do you translate that into giving the best customer service? We value and cultivate our core ethos of competence, exclusivity and passion. We are serious about meeting the requirements of discerning customers whilst offering a world class service. 3. What properties are you most excited about having on your books? We have a number of fantastic luxury development projects in prime locations that we will launch to the market later this year. These properties have been designed to satisfy current market demand and should sell very quickly! 4. What do you predict for the local lettings market for 2013/14? The prime central London market faces a number of well-documented challenges in the short term which is likely to result in a period of static prices. However I anticipate a return to price growth restored from mid-2014. 020 7584 1100 • engelvoelkers.com

S

helter, the housing charity, has produced research that compares the changing cost of homes and shopping over the past four decades. The results were astounding. In 1971, the average property price was just £5,632, while nowadays it is £245,319. This increase is far in excess of the corresponding growth in salaries and grocery prices. If a four-pint carton of milk had risen in price at the same rate as housing, it would now cost £10.45. Property prices have now risen to nine times the average salary of £26,200. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this dramatic increase has been particularly marked in London. In 1889, new builds in Fulham sold for the handsome sum of £300 each. These properties are often now selling for over £2.5 million! In 1889 at a Fulham grocer, pure coffee sold for 1/6d per .lb, or 7.5 new pence. Nowadays, the same amount would cost about £10. If coffee had risen at the same rate as property prices, it would now cost £500 per lb.! On a much smaller timescale, Fulham is a booming area that has enjoyed a very strong bounce-back since the recession, with average growth of 27.5% from the peak of the market. Over the past year, property prices have increased, on average, by 13% and in many cases significantly more. If there is any moral in this story it is that property has been, and will continue to be, the most attractive option for investors. If you have £2.5 million or any amount over £350k to invest, buy a property in Fulham – not 200,000 lbs. of coffee. You won’t regret it!

Matthew Dabell Director of Aspire Estate Agents

ith the recent fabulous weather, we may have expected the seasonal summer slow down to have started early. However, Sullivan Thomas continue to experience very strong demand and limited supply, putting significant upward pressure on prices. Whilst we are experiencing strongest demand for properties priced below £2 million, the softening in the market seen following the stamp duty increase to 7% in April 2012 is now long past and we are achieving record prices at all price levels. With many buyers competing and speed of exchange critical, it has never been more important to use good advisors to get you over the line.

residential team aim to raise £15k for Great Ormond Street charity

S

trutt & Parker’s London Residential team have announced their charity challenge of raising £15k over the summer in aid of the Great Ormond Street Charity (GOSH) through a series of fundraising events. Across Strutt & Parker’s six London offices the teams are joining in an overall company drive for GOSH. In 2013 the company elected GOSH as its charity of choice with an aim to raise over £100,000 to assist in the opening of a new ward. Throughout its long history, Great Ormond Street Hospital has always relied on public support, even after the founding of the NHS in 1948. The mission as a charity is to raise money to enable the hospital to continue to provide the very best care for its young patients and their families. Victoria Bunbury from the West Chelsea office who is coordinating the London charity drive explains; “We are all 100% behind this excellent cause and are excited to be coming up with new creative fundraising efforts. There has been a huge variety of different events taking place over the last month including some impressive sporting feats. Some offices have chosen to do team events whilst others have embarked

on individual challenges.” Miles Meacock, Head of the Notting Hill office spent seven consecutive days walking across the South Downs covering over 160km of the National Trail. He was walking up to 8 hours a day and raised nearly £2k. James Gow, Henry Watson and Will Allen from the Kensington office all took part in the Luton Hoo half marathon raising nearly £3k. Todd Langford-Archer from the West Chelsea office is due to complete an 100 mile London to Surrey bike whilst Jonathan Inglis, Head of the Chelsea office is planning a 130 mile bike ride ride from Mousehole in Cornwall to Exeter in two days having already raised nearly £4k. Finally, a number of the ladies from across the offices plan to take part in various London half marathons later in the summer. The Knightsbridge office are completing a unique Boris Bike challenge crossing all Central London bridges (14 in total) which will cover about 22 miles from Kew Bridge all the way to Tower Bridge. As well as sporting events there have been numerous successful cake sales, a tennis tournament, a royal baby sweepstake and even collection tins in offices and local shops raising vital extra funds.
