DECEMBER 2012
ing dong! merrily on high, In heav’n the bells are ringing…and they may be.,But so is your phone and your doorbell and, after that troupe of carol singers, your ears... We absolutely love Christmas, but we absolutely do not love the unconquerable amount of stress that goes with it. Father Christmas takes some of the pressure off on the stockings front, but can’t he just step in to organise the rest of it? Enter luxury concierge service, Quintessentially. Don’t fancy wrapping that Everest of presents? Want it to snow inside your house? I’m sure they could organise. In this month’s issue we interview the dashing co-founder, Ben Elliot, quizzing him on some truly extravagant festive requests and discovering how the master of organisation himself spends the big day. But for those of you who have Christmas wrapped up, labelled and under the tree already, bravo! Take a break to enjoy our little Christmas treat to you – a fascinating extract from the memoir of Fashion Queen, Grace Coddington. If anyone puts Anna Wintour in the shadows more than her notorious sunglasses, it’s Grace. In our extract we learn about the extraordinary dynamic between these two women; a relationship built on grit and resolve, woven together with mutual respect. And if that wasn’t enough, we have Executive Chef of Godiva’s drool-inducing description of his favourite chocolate, the ultimate gift guide to solve all your Christmas present conundrums, lots of seasonal things to see and do, not to mention, eat…Goodness, I feel my trousers tightening already. I very much hope you enjoy my first edition as Editor. Have a very Happy Christmas and a fantastic New Year.

UNTIL 3 MARCH 2013 V&A Gazing at wildlife photographs on the walls of the V&A’s annual exhibition, there is the tendency to feel rather jealous of the photographers behind these wonderful shots. Selected from thousands of entries worldwide, there are tranquil images - Jordi Chias’ Turtle - and photographs of a more dangerous nature - Luciano Candisani’s crocodile on the prowl. Each piece is a study of animals in their natural environment and their special relationship to it. Cromwell Road, SW7; vam.ac.uk

IMPERIAL WHARF
31ST DECEMBER YAMAL ALSHAM By the time New Year comes around, you would have probably crammed in enough mince pies and Turkey sandwiches you’ll never want to eat them again. Mix it up a bit this year by visiting Yamal Alsham, a new restaurant bang next door to the Chelsea Harbour. Serving Lebanese and Syrian inspired food, on New Year’s Eve there is talk of cross culture music and belly dancing displays…well, that’s one way to work off the Christmas binge. 5 The Boulevard SW6; yamalalsham.co.uk
The partnership between The Papatango New Writing Festival (founded in 2008) and the Finborough Theatre only started last year. And after huge successes, notably with Dawn King’s ‘Foxfinder’, they have teamed up again this year. Papatango focuses heavily on originality and out of the 700 entries worldwide, only 4 were picked. Together with post-show talks and discussions, this is a night out not to miss. 118 Finborough Road SW10; finboroughtheatre.co.uk

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS EVENT
9TH DECEMBER 10AM-6PM MAYORAL AND HAPPY FACES Getting your child to sit still for a haircut isn’t always the easiest of undertakings. So children’s hair salon, Happy Faces, have teamed up with children’s clothes shop Mayoral to put a fun twist on the otherwise cumbersome activity. Book your child in for a haircut and they get the opportunity to meet Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Peppa Pig and George, and Father Christmas too. Happy Faces provide a voucher for a free ‘mini mani’ or glitter tattoo with every haircut and Mayoral are offering a 15% discount on all their clothes when you spend £75 or more in store. There is also a competition for kids to design the best Christmas card, for which the winner will receive a free haircut, and parents can enter a prize draw to win £30 Mayoral voucher as well. Every child takes home a present, a balloon and a cupcake, so no one feels left out and it’s a win-win situation for all. 58 Northcote Road, SW11; mayoral.com

EVERY SUNDAY KING’S ROAD It’s the same every December. You kid yourself into small breakfasts, salads for lunch and a light dinner, all to avoid the all-consuming guilt of having overdone it. Well, cut yourself some slack this year. If that’s not enough to convince you, downstairs is a speakeasy bar which shows classic old movies for free. 342 King’s Road SW3; brooklynbite.com

After 28 years in theatre, Les Misérables makes it to the silver screen and with the promise of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe in song, we’re booking our tickets early. Against the backdrop of 19th Century France, comes the tale of unrequited love, broken dreams and sacrifice. We follow ex-con, Jean Valjean (Jackman) break parole and run for his life, with tyrannical policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) hot on his heels. The all-star cast includes Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne, who belt out such cracking tunes as ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ and ‘On My Own’. Whilst we’re not expecting ‘SueBo’ standards, we couldn’t be further from miserable about 2013’s premier blockbuster. Opens in cinemas nationwide on 11th January 2013.

THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS
STAR QUALITY
The last of three plays to have formed the Royal Court West End Season at the Duke of York’s Theatre, Constellations follows the relationship between a beekeeper and a cosmologist and the infinite possibilities that could occur as a result of a chance meeting. A story of love and a quantum multiverse, Nick Payne’s amusing yet deeply poignant script has audiences laughing and crying in equal measure. Until 5th January 2013, constellationstheplay.com
A NEW DAWN
Her fi rst novel, A Tiny Bit Marvellous, was a rip-roaring success, which means the pressure’s on for her second. Dawn French’s Oh Dear Silvia is a dark comedy that centres on coma patient, Silvia Shute. As she lies in bed, unconscious, the mystery of Silvia’s life unfolds through a never-ending stream of visitors and their prattling monologues. Just who is the real Silvia? The dreadful mother, the martyr, the inconsiderate wife? As her character is stripped bare, Silvia’s dark little secret is starkly exposed. Published by Michael Joseph Ltd £18.99
BLUE PLAQUE OF THE MONTH… HENRY COLE, 33 THURLOE SQUARE, SW3 Henry Cole, first director of the V&A and member of the Society of Arts, was – appositely – an early advocate of memorial plaques. His early career was spent in the National Records office, and later worked under Sir Roland Hill to help with the introduction of the Penny Post. One of his myriad achievements was in securing Queen Victoria’s backing of the Great Exhibition. And all this from a man who also helped establish the Royal College of Art, the Royal College of Music and Imperial College. 16

L O V E Martin Miller knows a thing or two about Love. He should, he’s been married three times. “Love conquers all,” he’ll tell you. But can love overcome Obsession? Tame Madness? Martin thinks so. He’s been making his gin that way since 1999. Marrying his obsession with crafting the perfect English Gin to the inspired Madness of blending it to strength using the gentle magic of pure Icelandic spring water. So here’s proof, if you need it, that there’s always some Madness in Love, but also some reason in Madness.

Deck the walls
From rare pigment paintings to iconic urban art and ostrich skin gift boxes, GGGallery’s owner, the financier Geza Toth-Feher, Lord of Kennal, unwraps the art of giving this Christmas
A
well chosen piece of art will convince even those who have it all. There’s nothing quite like unwrapping a gift that appeals to one’s taste, and whether it be a canvas, framed piece or even a sculpture, knowing it’s the only one in existence makes it even more special. As well as exclusive pieces and prints by urban artists Max Wiedemann and Artmani (to name a few), we’ve found the unique and the beautiful that even the most discerning aesthe will appreciate this Christmas. Artist Anne-Marie Nillson has travelled the world collecting pigments during her career as a stylist for French Vogue, creating “picture poems” with handmade frames and presented in boxes made by Parisian luggage makers. Hollywood based photographer Gillon Stephenson has taken thousands of images of nature. Choosing the most striking ones, he reimagines them to large tinted aluminium panels. BEAUTIFUL BEAUMONT We love it when two of our favourite things come together. As long time fans of both Beaumont Organic, the ethical and minimalist eponymous label by Hannah Beaumont, and the Fleur B boutique on Chelsea Green, we were delighted to discover that the latter will now be stocking the former. Our Christmas lists are taking shape nicely… beaumontorganic.com; fleurb.co.uk
Seasonal party tips from our style guru
C
reate your own ambience. Enjoy your own party; it shouldn’t be torturous. Don’t buy supermarket food, trays of sh.. canapés; make your own and get one of your friends to help out. As long as there’s plenty of drink and good company, nobody cares what they’re eating. Make a hot punch. This is easy: plenty of Jamaican rum, a large bottle of cheap Italian wine and red lemonade, lemons, oranges, a few cinnamon sticks, a handful of cloves and you’re ready. Theming the party will add to the sense of occasion…“A Christmas Carol” and “The Grinch” are all good for dressing up. String up fairy lights - Heal’s on the King’s Road have a wide variety from plain white to coloured lights in different shapes. Add plenty of candles - The White Company on Sloane Square have a very festive looking and smelling selection. Also, buy a real Christmas tree. It doesn’t have to be 7 feet tall. A glass of champagne the following morning is the best hangover cure I know and a vitamin C tablet to ward off any lowered-immune system bugs. Good luck and Merry Christmas! paulcostelloe.com; follow Paul on Twitter! @paulcostelloe or @paulcostelloeuk

FINE AND DANDY Heartening news for dapper dandies of SW3: Crockett & Jones, which makes hand-crafted shoes, has just opened its sixth shop in Knightsbridge. Its interior is all gentlemen’s club style dark maple wood panelling, while the collections are divided into formal, driving, slipper and specialist leather sections. 155 Brompton Road, SW3; crockettandjones.com
Ski bunnies take note: Harrods has launched an all-new skiwear boutique. We’re loving the retro stylings of this Moncler patterned chunky knit cardigan (£669) but frankly, we’re covetous of the lot, from the Lacroix Aspen pants (£619) to the Fendi quilted jackets (£669). Whether it’s the ski or the après that’s your thing, there’s no excuse not to perfect chalet chic this season on the slopes. harrods.com

Jewel in the crown Frocks and jewels with Sicilian-born, Fulham-based designer Arianna Cerrito You showed at both London and Paris Fashion Week this year. What was the experience like for you? Fascinating and highly rewarding. I was amazed at how the unique concept of Arianna Cerrito Jewelwear generated genuine interest amongst press and buyers.
market. I am intrigued by experimenting with the juxtaposition of metals – which may feel ‘cold’ – against the warmth of voluptuous fabrics.
Do you prefer showing at London or Paris? London and Paris are two completely different platforms. London is very much about the buzz - press and cameramen waiting for celebrities - whilst Paris is the international hub for the most important buyers on earth. Both experiences are vital for my label at this stage. Hearing feedback from key players in the industry is so important and helps me to develop.
Are the jewels and dresses only designed to be complementary to one another or are they separate entities? They are both. My challenge was to create an overall look to ‘bond’ a piece of jewellery with a dress, whilst ensuring each can be worn independently. This obviously gives the wearer endless possibilities. On top of that, almost any of the jewels in my collection can be worn with any of the dresses. They can also be ‘shaped’ in many different ways according to the wearer’s mood and personality. Therefore, the jewels and dresses are sold separately.
You design both jewellery and clothes. How and when did you decide to turn your hand to both? I have a passion for jewels and believe that when a woman wears a striking piece of jewellery, she stands out from the crowd. But that is not always the case. Sometimes certain garments matched with jewels can look unflattering. Th is is especially true of women trying to wear something out of the ordinary for a specific occasion. To avoid such a clash, some opt for jewelled dresses. But because they are difficult to clean (and we hate wearing the same thing twice) these items are often never worn again. I wanted to design jewels that complemented pieces in my collection, an idea that did not exist in the fashion
You were born in Sicily – has your homeland influenced your work? I love Sicily and try to go back at least once a year. Although I grew up in Northern Italy and spent just 6 years in Sicily as a teenager before moving to London, I am definitely very attached to my homeland. Sicily is a fascinating place: full of ‘richness’, beauty, heritage and warmth. There’s no doubt that it influences my work; Sicily is part of who I am.

STYLE You were always creative, having joined the Arena di Verona ballet company aged just 12. What was that time like for you? I was so thrilled and honoured to be part of such an important ballet company and made the most of it. I met not only ballet dancers but also amazing musicians and extraordinary choreographers and directors. I cherish the memory of that time as it contributed to the person I am today. The Arena di Verona hosts the most spectacular operas and dance performances every summer and as such, visitors come from all over the world to see them. Theatrical costumes and outstanding choreography have triggered my imagination ever since, and are part of my design inspiration. Fluid movements, organic forms, sculptural and three-dimensional shapes are what I translate onto the woman’s body. Later on, you decided to swap dance for fashion. You came to London to work for Harrods and then went back to Milan to train. What made you decide to go with fashion in the end? It took me a long time to choose fashion as my main job. At the back of my mind I have always known this was what I would eventually do, but I knew I had to be fully prepared, just like a ballet dancer, who practises for years before feeling ready for the stage. In that sense, my 10 years marketing experience in the luxury industry really helped. I learned how to translate a creative idea into something real.
Did you train as both a fashion and jewellery designer? How do the two disciplines differ and/or feed into one another? I mainly trained as a jewellery designer, but studied some aspects of garment construction and fashion in London. To the majority of designers out there, these two disciplines fall within two separate watertight compartments, whilst to me, they are conceptually, visually and physically a single entity. I do not see the difference between a dress and a piece of jewellery; they are both aesthetically part of dressing a woman, embracing her shapes to enhance her beauty. Of course it is a very difficult task, for the look needs to meet with functionality and the right weight balance. Can you remember your first ever design? I remember it very well and wish I still had it! It was a very simple knee-length dress with a boat-neck at the front and open back. What I remember most vividly is the softness of the fabric it was made from, a gorgeous silk wool from Valentino. The colour was my favourite - emerald green, which is the signature colour of Arianna Cerrito Jewelwear.
Who would you most like to dress? I wouldn’t be able to pinpoint just one woman. I have a long list: Queen Rania of Jordan, Alannah Weston, Carla Sozzani, Tilda Swinton, Annie Lennox and ultimately… Anna Wintour. Although, for most daring pieces, I would save for Daphne Guinness. What are the worst current trends? Neon colours, chunky heels and oversized silhouettes. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Count to 10 before giving your opinion. Sum up Arianna Cerrito Jewelwear ... Collectable, wearable art pieces. ariannacerrito.com
Who are your design heroes? Hermès for its ‘heritage’ feel. It’s a fashion house that dates back to 1837 and has seen massive expansion, but retained its strong aspirational allure and craftsmanship legacy. I also love Elie Saab, whose gowns are fluid, feminine and contemporary.

IN VOGUE
In this extract from her book Grace: A Memoir, the creative director of American Vogue, Grace Coddington, shows a lighter side to feared editor Anna Wintour 38
GRACE CODDINGTON.indd 38
30/11/2012 16:42
I
am often heard grumbling about Anna Wintour. For instance, at the end of a fashion meeting at American Vogue in which one of my cherished ideas is arbitrarily dropped. Or if I’m required to shoot a difficult celebrity I’m not especially fond of. Or if I’m disallowed from shooting a model I mannered in that arty Italian Vogue way. Funnily enough, I had no idea how cantankerous and argumentative I can seem until I saw myself in the film The September Issue. Small surprise that, in the past, Anna has said I am the only person in fashion who can actually grind her down. As the nuns who wrote my school report when I was 14 put it, ‘Grace has a very nice way of getting her own will.’ More and more over the years, especially in public after Anna became American Vogue editor in chief, I’ve come to see her as the possessor of an almost Margaret Thatcher-like, straight-faced control. One summer on her way into a Paris fashion show, for example, after being pelted with some gooey substance by the animal-rights people who are always lying in wait, she disappeared backstage, rearranged herself, had her make-up redone, and was still one of the earlier arrivals to take her seat. Every so often I have lunch with Anna at her request. These days, though, I get worked up beforehand, usually thinking, ‘This is finally the time she’ll say, “You’re getting on a bit. You’re looking tired. I think you should take it easy,”’ as a prelude to gently asking me to step down. In fact, the last time we went out, I dared to say, ‘I thought you were going to tell me to leave.’ At which point Anna laughed and said, ‘No, as long as I’m here, you will be, too.’
I never had an actual birthday party when I was a child. As with any other social happening, it was the sort of thing that made me far too nervous. Whatever anxieties I felt at seven, however, were magnified tenfold when I reached 70 and people started to mention the possibility of a large-scale birthday celebration.
As the day approached in spring 2011, Anna said, ‘Your big birthday is coming up, and I’m going to give you a party. Have it where you like and however many people you like.’ (Funny how she likes celebrating other people’s birthdays but ignores her own.) The party was, in fact, a roaring success. Anna made a speech. ‘Grace,’ she jokingly 39
GRACE CODDINGTON.indd 39
30/11/2012 16:42
began, ‘this is going to be your favourite part of the evening, when we all get to talk about you.’ Then she continued, ‘To me you will always be the heart and soul of the magazine, its guardian at the gate, its beacon of excellence. For about as long as I have edited Vogue, one person, Grace Coddington, has made me excited to come into the office every day…’ I was speechless. This from a woman who normally never pays you a compliment to your face! How could I possibly respond? I could click my heels in the air or turn
cartwheels, but my regular sessions of Pilates were not quite that effective. I could laugh and cry at the thought that so many painstaking years of toil were held in such esteem. I could shimmy across the dance floor knowing I still had some life in me yet. Extracted from Grace: A Memoir, by Grace Coddington (Chatto & Windus, £25)

In the lap of luxury Quintessentially’s Ben Elliot talks to Edwina Langley about Cristal, caviar and Christmas 44
Ben Elliot_v3.indd 44
30/11/2012 12:56
‘I
don’t believe we’ve ever had competition,’ says Ben Elliot, cofounder of Quintessentially Lifestyle the luxury 24 hour concierge service. ‘We have an impressive, unrivalled international little black book that ensures our members are well looked after anywhere in the world.’ That’s confident speak. But for someone who, at 24, started a business in a basement flat alongside co-founders Aaron Simpson and Paul Drummond, and then watched it grow into an organisation encompassing 60 offices worldwide, I suppose he’s earned his right to it. Still, it’s only natural to assume these past few years of austerity might have hindered demand for luxury and that perhaps businesses like Quintessentially Lifestyle are feeling the pinch? ‘What happens in times of uncertainty is that people choose the best and I believe we are the best.’ So according to Elliot, apparently not. Though known on the social pages as ‘nephew of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’, no one can accuse Elliot of riding on his Royal connections. Indeed his dogged determination to succeed seems to have been prevalent from a young age. He edited his school newspaper, selling as many copies as he could, and at 16 managed to get an interview with Margaret Thatcher soon after she left government - a veritable scoop. Even before that, as a child, he remembers practising magic under the stage name ‘Merlin the Marvel’, and was so determined to win over his audience, he used to bribe them with sweets. I wonder if perhaps that’s what drew him into the concierging world - a steadfast desire to do magic, or rather, make the impossible, possible. If that was indeed his aim, he’s clearly good at it. ‘A few years back we were asked by a member to arrange a private climb of Sydney Harbour Bridge so he could go up the bridge alone with his girlfriend to propose,’ says Elliot. ‘We arranged this with one day’s notice.’ 45

Other more notorious stories include that of flying teabags across the Atlantic to Madonna so she could enjoy her preferred brew, and sending white peacocks to a party thrown by Jennifer Lopez. Whilst it is strangely fascinating to read of such extravagancies, there is an undeniable element of the ridiculous to it too. When Elliot mentions buying and sending Christmas cards for members, one can’t help but wonder, why bother sending any at all? Still, businesses work on supply and demand and there’s clearly demand, so Elliot’s business is working. ‘There are so many amazing things that we’ve done for clients,’ he continues. ‘One year we had to source and wrap Christmas presents for a member’s 20 closest friends and relations, including a Van Cleef & Arpels watch worth £35,000. We stocked their fridge and larder with Cristal, smoked salmon from Iceland, white truffles from Alba and caviar from Iran. The decorations were taken care of too, so all the member had to do was turn up on Christmas Eve!’ Like a well-trained magician, Elliot makes his work appear easy. But providing exemplary customer service to, no doubt, a plethora of demanding clients and their families, cannot be all plain sailing, and especially not at Christmas. One wonders if
first Christmas with him – and getting lots of well deserved sleep!’ No one can deny him that, for in addition to opening doors the world over, he is also renowned for his philanthropic work. Five years ago, the Quintessentially Foundation was established to improve the health, education and welfare of disadvantaged people and their communities. Testament to his charitable commitments, when asked what he is excited about in the coming weeks, he responds, ‘The inaugural Fayre of St James Charity Concert. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to War Child, the international charity dedicated to protecting children affected by war.’ Almost on cue, as I type, a news report in the background tells of the rising death toll in Gaza, referencing the ever-increasing number of child deaths. It seems that in charity, like business, Elliot is in the right place. Ambitious, successful and (allegedly) always on call, Elliot lives in the fast line. Although he likes to keep at least one foot on the ground – ‘my favourite seasonal traditions include watching The Queen’s Speech and a Boxing Day feast,’ he says, ‘followed by a walk or a shoot.’ Gatekeeper to the world? Perhaps. But at heart, he’s quintessentially British.
‘One year we had to source and wrap Christmas presents for a member’s 20 closest friends and relations, including a Van Cleef & Arpels watch worth £35,000’ Elliot ever has time to see his own family. ‘We’re very close-knit,’ he insists, ‘and Christmas is always very important to us. This year I’ll spend most of the holiday period down in Dorset with my family – my wife and I alternate between there and Gloucestershire every year.’ A relative newly-wed, in September 2011 he married Mary-Clare Winwood, daughter of musician Steve Winwood, and just four months ago, the couple gave birth to a son. ‘I am most looking forward to spending his

ith Christmas around the corner and parties in their abundance, the best accessory to the perfect dress is perfect skin. At Peach on the Hill this the main concern and customised treatments is what they do best, explains Karen, salon owner, and with a full range of technology at their finger tips they can improve all skin types. This season Karen and her team are prescribing a lifting and gentle peeling treatment together to give the ultimate party glow, so kind to the skin you can have it the same day as the party. So achieve great skin instantly and ban those skin autumn blues. Karen has worked in the area for 17 years and seen the industry develop. Now at Peach on the Hill she is keen to push the boundaries of skincare, while keeping it all non-invasive. And as testimony to her talents, she has clients from all over London as well as Dorset, Wiltshire and all over the world, who return to Peach for what
they believe are the best facials anywhere. Peach was recently crowned Salon of the Year 2012 by the International Institute of Anti-Ageing for the UK, which was a very exciting achievement. Signature facials At Peach, signature facials are all you are looking for in a skin treatment, whether treating photo-ageing, congestion, rosacea or just maintenance. Tailored to your skin’s needs, when you arrive Peach therapists will help you achieve your own natural radiance by cleansing and feeding where appropriate (Peach have a good reputation for thorough extractions where applicable). Yet whatever your skin will have done, you are guaranteed that when you leave you will not look red and blotchy – just glowing and radiant – and a couple of days later, the full effects really show. Beautiful skin starts from within When it comes to healthy skin what you
put inside your body can be as important as what you apply topically. Karen at Peach believes that working along side the Advanced Nutrition Programme their products can be combined to effectively target skin health. High-quality supplements can have a role to play in helping to ensure that you have a healthy, radiant complexion. Peach also offers endermolgie cellulite treatments, IPL hair removal and photo rejuvenation, CACI non surgical face lifting and medical needling. They will combine any of these to give the most personalised treatment for the client. So why not give someone a Peach on the Hill voucher for Christmas? n life we spend a lot of time investing in our business, our stocks and shares and our family and friends, but fail miserably at investing in ourselves. This is often because we feel we don’t have the time or simply don’t know how to. Just as a personal trainer will help you to get the results that you want with your body and fitness, a personal coach will work with you to achieve the results that you want and desire in your life. Investing in yourself can be one of the wisest things you can do. Chelsea based Janet Murray is a personal coach, author and NLP expert with over twenty years experience in the corporate and business world. Janet Murray works closely with HNWI and individuals to empower them to get the results that they want in their lives and change areas of their lives that may not be working for them. Janet works with clients using the world’s most precise and efficient neurological performance enhancing techniques (NLP) to identify, remodel and optimize their excellence, while utilising a rare blend of intuitive personal wisdom and hard-nosed strategic and operational nouse to implement change in their lives. Working on a personal and professional level, Janet tackles key areas of your life from relationship and money to career and divorce, in helping you rebrand and reinvest in the most valuable asset “you”. NLP has proved beneficial in personal development for Lily Allen, Cheryl Cole, Heston Blumenthal and Sophie Dahl, all of whom utilised it as a tool to rebrand and relaunch themselves, with newfound self awareness and understanding. Janet helps clients to be at their optimum, giving them tools to create the lives and happiness they so desire and deserve. 0844 870 7928 janetmurray.com / info@janetmurray.com

Design for living The In:Style Direct showroom at Imperial Wharf is now two years old. Absolutely talks to design director Mansi Mehra about the brand’s success at homestaging and interior design
Tell us more about In:Style Direct’s background in interior design... For almost 10 years, we’ve specialised in designing and furnishing interiors for homeowners and rental investors in prime central London. This ranges from complete refurbishment programmes to our trademark range of design-led furnishing packages. We also work with leading property developers furnishing showhomes in new developments across the capital. Increasingly we were being asked by private individuals to stage their homes, which could mean dressing a property to sell, to let, or simply to live in. Why do you think In:Style Direct has developed such a loyal following? We offer designer quality – without the designer price tag. Our furnishings and soft furnishings are not only stylish but well made, but more than that, they offer real value for money. We have our own soft furnishing collections, all designed
and manufactured in-house, so with no middleman we can give a fast turnaround and keep prices down. The emphasis is on creating a distinctive, high end look but at an affordable price. Why do you think homestaging is becoming so popular? Homestaging helps to sell a property faster – and for the best price. Equally, a property will let more quickly if it is presented as a home where a tenant can picture themselves living. Over 85 per cent of the rental properties we furnish are let within a week. We recently dressed a two-bedroom apartment in Lennox Gardens, Chelsea that had remained unlet for 11 weeks, despite being newly refurbished. We furnished it and it got rented the next day at £1,400 per week. In St John’s Wood we staged a three-bedroom apartment in a mansion block and it sold for the full asking price within five weeks.
How is In:Style Direct different to other interior design companies? The difference is in our turnaround times and the affordability factor. A client may want help creating an interior that reflects their personality, or they may want to make better use of the space they have without the expense of using an architect. Often clients simply don’t have time to put together a new look themselves. We have a large warehouse where we hold a lot of stock and as we make all our own soft furnishings and window treatments, we’re able to achieve a unique look within a week if need be. Putting your own stamp on a property needn’t cost the earth or take months to bring together. People are rediscovering living on a budget and we want to inspire them. A Designer’s
Life A brief encounter with... Gabriel Bernardi
My idea of heaven is... My living room alongside my books, fireplace, upholstered walls, piano and two large windows overlooking Orange Square. I am most proud of … My showroom on Pimlico Road - the culmination of over 10 years hard work as an interior and furniture designer. I wish I was better at… Going to bed early. I would describe my style as… Timeless and disciplined. Contemporary with a classical and historical perspective. The best advice I’ve ever been given was… To travel. My lucky break was… Being asked to do a 122ft Hessen Superyacht for an Australian client. If I could choose someone to write the soundtrack to my life… Mozart of course. But if they have to be alive, then Mark Ronson. The book that changed my life was… Jubbs: Cellular Rejuvenation. An amazing book on how food can be used to heal the body. My best ever buy was… My baby grand piano on eBay. My favourite saying is… What would I know, I’m just the curtain maker. The best hour of the day is… The hour before and after the phones start ringing, when I’m at my most creative.
My idea of a good night out is… A bit of glamour at Scott’s in Mayfair followed by a bit of trashiness in Soho. The perfect night in is… (Was) Downton Abbey with friends and my homemade gnocci ragu. The recipe is a closely guarded family secret. At weekends, I most enjoy… Sketching. A walk in Hyde Park. A gym session followed by organic Japanese. Someone whose style I admire is… Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. I love the interiors they’ve created and curated. The thing that gets me down is… Whenever I have to leave London. My favorite holiday is… Visiting my parents’ home in Eagle Bay, Western Australia. Or a week or two on the Greek islands. My favorite thing about Chelsea is… The interior shops, especially Chelsea Harbour for textiles. If I could change one thing about Chelsea… It would be the E4 programme, Made in Chelsea. The Only Way Is Essex is far more entertaining! What people might not know about me is... I study piano and Jungian psychology.

Style Tips 1. Go bespoke and create one-off pieces. Nothing matches the satisfaction. 2. Use metal furniture as an alternative to timber framed furniture. It preserves a sense of space and is often easier on the eye. 3. Dress your table tops with books, photos and eclectic personal items. Dressing a room properly really adds a lot more personality to any interior. You’d be surprised how often it’s overlooked. 69

Island dream Gather round with this clever kitchen addition
O
ne of Absolutely's favourite things about the festive period is, of course, the food! The sheer velocity of bread sauce, cranberries and Christmas puds that pass our lips is, in itself, a wonder. When it comes to making room for these delicious delights – take it from Kitchen Architecture – an open plan kitchen is a great help. With an island for both practical and sociable purposes, it maximises worktop space and serving areas, whatever's on the menu, be it mulled wine and mince pies for a Christmas party or a hearty stew for family and friends on Boxing Day. 'An island provides a practical and sociable preparation area', advises Amy Chan from Kitchen Architecture. Guests and family can congregate around the island to chat with the host or even help with the preparation of larger meals like
Christmas dinner. The cook can face out into the living areas, to keep an eye on all their guests, and join in with the conversation so they don’t feel left out. 'It allows friends and family to sit with a drink or snack and chat easily with the cook,’ Amy adds. So if you’re thinking of ways to maximise festive fun and food capacity, this clever Kitchen Architecture has got it covered. ondon has been through the wringer when it comes to conserving its architectural heritage. But while the Second World War might have scarred the capital’s landscape (not to mention the fairy brutal structures which were hurredly built to fill in the gaps of the post-war cityscape) there is much that remains extant to be proud of. Or so argues Philip Davies, author of bestsellers Lost London and Panoramas of Lost London. In his latest tome, London: Hidden Interiors, photographed by Derek Kendall, he grants us access to 180 of the least-known interiors of the capital. With glimpses of private salons, ornate churches and museums, it is a feast for all interior-loving eyes. He guides us round The Spirit Collection at the Darwin Centre in the Natural History
Museum’, which houses the ‘largest and most important natural history collections in the world’, and lies amidst the museum’s Romanesque façade and galleries designed by Alfred Waterhouse. We also get a sneak peak at the Old Vestry Hall at Chelsea Town Hall, designed by J M Brydon in 1884-5 as ‘one of the first municipal buildings in the revived English Baroque
or ‘Wrenaiassance’ style’. And then there is Crosby Hall, which sits on Danvers Street along the Chelsea Embankment. Originally built between 1466 and 1475 for mediaeval merchant, John Crosby, it is now, as Davies tells, being restored to its full splendour. More than 500 years after it was first built, a City financier has commissioned its restoration. Over 15 years, a team of experts have carefully crafted a neo-Tudor mansion to act as a setting for the great hall itself. Now it can remain as London’s most important surviving domestic mediaeval building; a visual delight - as is this book. Thierry and the
Chocolate factory Godiva’s Executive Chef, Thierry Muret, tantalises our tastebuds with tales of indulgence
75
THIERRY GODIVA FOOD INTERVIEW.indd 75
30/11/2012 16:52
Thierry Muret, the Belgian born Executive Chef for Godiva Chocolatier, first discovered his passion for chocolate in 1984 when he opened a shop with his sister in Chicago. In 1989, he left to join Godiva as part of its Research & Development Team. 23 years on, he’s still there, driving the brand forward with his exquisite inventions. We caught up with him to talk about his Christmas collection, personal inspiration and using chocolate in savoury dishes… Why do Belgians in particular make such good chocolates? Us Belgians are specialists in chocolate making. It’s in our style and the style of our cuisine – a fusion of German and French. We use variety – ganache, crème fraiche, caramel - and a mixture of flavour and visual combinations. What are the big trends in chocolate at the moment? Firstly, knowing the origin (at Godiva we
‘My wife hates me for it, but I eat between 15 and 20 pieces of chocolate every day.’ actually know each grower). Secondly, using a recipe that a particular culture understands, then adding an unusual twist to it. Our customers in China, for example, think Belgium is an exotic country! Molecular cuisine is also very popular at the moment. Where does your chocolate come from? That’s a BIG secret! The origin is what makes the signature of the brand, so it’s a closely guarded secret. I can tell you however, if you look at the globe, it comes mainly from the right side. What inspired your Christmas collection? Three main Christmas themes: aspiration,
enchantment and warmth, which we matched with different pralines. For ‘aspiration’ we mixed an almond praline with honey, for ‘enchantment’ we used macadamia praline and lightened it with orange, mandarin and a touch of cardamom. And finally for ‘warmth’, we mixed a hazelnut praline with a pinch of cinnamon and ginger for heat. How do you come up with flavour combinations? Experience. A lot of people have mathematical memories, but chefs have flavour memories. When we think about a flavour combination we can actually taste it in our imagination.

Chocolate in savoury dishes… A warm spinach salad
How much chocolate do you actually eat? My wife hates me for it, but I eat between 15 and 20 pieces every day. How do you stay so slim? Good quality chocolate keeps you trim…No, I’m joking, I don’t know why. What is your favourite chocolate? In the Godiva range we have a piece that took 14 months to create. It’s called the Tourbillon 85 – it’s a dark chocolate with ganache inside, made from 85% cacao. Describe it… You smell the chocolate and then bite it. You taste sweetness with a bit of sourness. Then comes the cocoa aromatics with a little astringency, a dryness of palate. Then follows a touch of bitterness and you finish with a clean smooth chocolate. Is chocolate-making an art or a science? Both.
But you started off in chemistry didn’t you? Yes, I am the black sheep of the industry! I started in chemistry because I loved it. My sister suggested we start a chocolate shop - La Caraque - in the US, but I had no idea how to make chocolate. So I decided to interview all the master chocolatiers and in doing that, I met the toughest, meanest, most talented chocolatier, Rene Goossens. We worked together from then on. Is there any chocolate you don’t like? I am not a big fan of white chocolate, because of the level of sweetness, but it is good for younger palates. Do you give your family chocolate as Christmas presents? No! But I cook with it. Although my wife often tells me, ‘No, please, DON’T!’ Godiva Chocolate Cafe at Harrods godiva-online-store.eu
Take a good balsamic vinegar and add some cocoa nibs (ground-up cocoa beans). Heat and reduce by 50%. Leave over night. Serve over a warm spinach salad with beautiful strawberries. It’s balsamic, syrupy, and chocolatey.
White Chocolate Mussels
Make a standard mussel broth and finish by shaving in some white chocolate. The sweetness of the chocolate enhances the plump mussels and gives a very round flavour. But don’t add too much!
Wild Salmon
It’s a lean fish, so pan-fry it with olive oil, then add a little cocoa butter. This creates a ‘beurre noisette’ of sorts. Cocoa butter’s smoking point is almost the same as olive oil’s, so sear the fish, then finish in the oven. Serve simply with lemon. 77

Restaurant REVIEWS Tucking in at Bumpkin and Boisdale
BUMPKIN
‘G
reen and pleasant land’ is how William Blake described our country in the poem, Jerusalem. And whilst our homeland has taken a battering, that greatness remains. One such example is Bumpkin which does Best of British to, well, its best. Tucked away in a townhouse on the quieter stretch of Brompton Road, its Cotswold green awnings and pots of fresh flowers, conjure up the refreshing thought that, no, this is not another fine-dining establishment in a darkened room. Instead, it’s a hearty and authentic place which serves, in short, absolutely scrumptious food. It’s all about seasonal British produce here – and, as they boast, they scour the country to find the best ingredients. The treacle and cider glazed ham hock with pearl barley, sprouting broccoli and piccalilli salad was a great example of this – the meat was beautifully textured while the handmade piccalilli was quite superb. The excellent combination of home cured Loch Duart beetroot stained cured salmon served with a crab and horseradish pancake, equally impressed with finesse in presentation. The main courses held their
own flawlessly, with the Durham venison haunch proving a particular hit with well matched creamed savoy cabbage and herbed mashed potatoes. However, as with all top restaurants, dessert took first prize. The cherry bakewell tart with toasted almonds served with clotted Cornish cream was very good, but the Cartmel sticky toffee pudding, with Jude’s vanilla ice cream, was seriously great. Perfectly springy and sitting happily in a generous pool of toffee, the table descended into silence as this was something which had to be concentrated on – and most certainly savoured. The drinks menu was the final jewel in the crown. Every wine offered (all, of course, English) is fully sustainable, bio-dynamic or organic. There is also the option of British ciders, ales and beers. Cocktails are not forgotten either. The English Garden is of particular note, made up of elderflower, apple, cucumber and mint. Just like a perfect summer’s day. Jack Frost begone, we say.
BOISDALE
I
f you’re fortunate enough to visit charismatic Scotsman Ranald Macdonald’s excellent restaurant Boisdale in Belgravia one evening, the first thing you shall see is tartan, tartan everywhere, leavened only by red. All that’s lacking is a big bearded man tossing a caber, although perhaps you’ll find him in one of the various bars and snugs dotted all over the place. This isn’t subtle, but what it is, is big and entertaining. Welcome to a place where restraint – both in terms of dining and décor – is most definitely off the agenda. You’ll be entertained with some very decent jazz while you peruse the menu, which is essentially in two sections. The first, the ‘Jacobite menu’, offers two courses at £19.75 at all hours of the day, making it an affordable choice for a casual lunch. However, the a la carte menu is where the real excitement is. Skip past the oysters and caviar, unless you’re a Russian oligarch, and enjoy a starter of South Uist King scallops with Macsween haggis, or a trio of salmon from the Scottish west coast. And then, the highlight. The steak. People come from all over London for it and I can confirm, the 14oz sirloin on the bone with béarnaise sauce is the one to make headway towards. The rich, full flavour of the meat is supported perfectly by the deliciously creamy sauce. Delectable chips should, and must, be had, as must oozing creamed spinach. My companion, not really a carnivore, had the rib-eye and pronounced it similarly excellent, saying that it was one of the best she’d ever eaten. If you’re able to manage pudding, a glazed chocolate mousse with caramelized banana is a very lovely thing indeed. The excellent Boisdale is one of London’s most characterful and deliciously off beat places to dine and drink, and long may it continue to be so. 15 Eccleston Street, SW1W boisdale.co.uk/belgravia

Christmas Tea
REVIEW London’s finest teas are put to the test
PEGGY PORCSHEN What: From the moment, you cast your eye upon the candy-floss coloured awnings of Peggy Porschen, you know that this place is going to be good, really good. Couple that with its large Georgian windows, cosy interior and pastel-sugary hues and you’re in the parlour before you know it. Afternoon tea provides the perfect excuse to visit. It’s not afternoon tea ‘per se’ as there is no three-layered tower to tuck into. Instead, it’s minimal, less calorific (well, maybe) and most importantly, delicious. Hot chocolate and a cupcake is where it’s at. A combination, which combats the cold outside and makes you never want to leave. The hot chocolate is almost Italian in style - basically
thick melted chocolate, no watery or semifrothed numbers here. Or else there’s a marvelous list of teas. We recommend the Gingerbread, which is a twist on the Masala Chai with spicy notes of cinnamon, almond and vanilla. The cupcakes equally triumph with flawless texture, intelligent portion size and inspired flavours (strawberry and champagne, vanilla chiffon, chocolate haven and the awardwinning black forest, to name but a few) Don’t Miss: Sticky toffee – a marvellous combination of moist date and walnut sponge with a creamy caramel centre, topped with toffee frosting. Deeply indulgent, boasting just the right amount of sweetness and gloriously springy. What makes it special: In short, there’s nowhere else like it. A pink and pretty parlour of perfection. £3.50 per cupcake, £18 for 6. Tea from £2.95; peggyporschen.com
THE BERKELEY What: The Berkeley’s iconic ‘Prét-à-Portea’ is the ultimate celebration of fashion and food, comprised of a delicious selection of handcrafted masterpieces, each one tailormade to reflect the season’s latest trends. Take your pick from sumptuous cakes, dainty finger-sandwiches or delightful amusebouches, all delicately served on vibrant Paul Smith china. Don’t miss: Perhaps the most irresistible of them all is the Manolo Blahnik ‘Neurotica’ pink polka dot cake, filled with a scrumptious nutella-tasting

THE CHELSEA TEAPOT What: Cosy in the manner of a favourite grandmother’s kitchen, the welcome at The Chelsea Teapot is warmth itself and walking in from the cold is like receiving a reassuring hug from said materfamilias. Happily, the sumptuous cakes and sweet morsels on offer are just as lovely as the surroundings. We opt for the traditional afternoon tea. Served up on an antique tiered platter, we devour dainty sandwiches (featuring the old favourites, from cucumber and cream cheese to egg and cress), followed by hearty warm scones with clotted cream and great slabs of deliciously rustic carrot and walnut cake. We save the delicate little cakes for last, and – defeated – gianduja cream. Team it with a crisp glass of champagne for a high-fashion treat or choose between the warming range of traditional, herbal or fruit teas to escape the winter chill. What makes it special: Prét-à-portea takes its inspiration from the very best of the catwalk, drawing upon our favourite designer’s collections and whipping them up into delectable little treats. This season features Yves Saint Laurent’s forest green Victoria sponge handbag, Diane Von Furtsenberg’s pink lady mousse with whimsical interlocking puzzle pieces, and even a Burberry sugar umbrella in classic purple. Stacked with fabulously imaginative and truly tasty creations, it really is the final word in cake couture. From £39 pp the-berkeley.co.uk
have them packaged up to take home. Don’t miss: The Chelsea Teapot has an array of cupcakes on offer alongside slices of more traditional farmhouse-style confections. The red velvet variety is the teashop’s most popular choice and indeed visitors should not come here without trying it in all its gloriously smooth richness. Best of all, like many other cupcakes here, it is gluten free. What makes it special: This is the place for those who lament the demise of the proper teashop post the disappearance of the Lyons Tea Houses from our high streets. Everything here is done properly, all is homemade and best of all it is cosiness itself – all without a trace of formality. £18 pp; thechelseateapot.com
THE LANESBOROUGH What: The achingly glamorous Apsley’s at The Lanesborough – the Michelin-starred restaurant presided over by gastro-genius Heinz Beck – transforms daily between the hours of 4pm and 6pm into the purveyor of surely London’s most elegant high tea. The lavish art deco overtones (the chandeliers cascade like glistening waterfalls from the glass roof), the tinkling of the piano and the superfluity of tea dress-clad lovelies do little to dispel the notion that you’ve journeyed back to a time when tea was taken seriously. Don’t Miss: The Belgravia Tea. It starts with a refreshing bowl of strawberries and cream, served with a glass of Taittinger, which is followed by a generous selection of dainty mini sandwiches. Next up, it’s scones and clotted cream, toasted tea cakes with melted butter and hearty chocolate-doused cakes. Finally
there’s a dainty selection of miniature apricot cheesecakes, macarons and butterscotch confections. What makes it special: The tea sommelier, Karl Kassab, who will talk you through the surfeit of black and white teas on the menu. £48 pp, including a glass of Taittinger. lanesborough.com 81

C’EST CHIC, BOTANIQUE
Hours spent gawping at Michael Palin charming his way across the Brazilian landscape in his latest BBC travel extravaganza has instilled in us something of a crush on this fascinating South American country. And to tempt us more, a new visionary project, devised by a group of entrepreneurs, has now opened midway between Sao Paulo and Rio. The Botanique Hotel and Spa is the brainchild of AOL founder David Cole and Body Shop founder Gordon Roddick, both of whom have insisted upon the resort’s deference to indigenous materials and topography in its architecture, interior design and spa treaments. botanique.com.br

IN THE FAMILY WAY
Relais and Chateaux’s L’Albereta in Lombardy has announced the launch of its new ‘Familysize Love’ offer, which sees the Lake Iseo property offer complimentary children’s rooms for families with more than one child under the age of 12. And while parents can relax at the Henri Chenot Spa, tinies are kept entertained at Maty’s Kids’ club. Genius. From £208 per night per double room; albereta.it
After doing battle on the brutal streets of London amidst fierce crowds of determined shoppers, there is nothing quite as heavenly as stepping away from the hordes. Enter then Dukes St James, which this season offers the Oxford Street-weary Christmas afternoon teas (think champagne and lemon meringue pies) and the chance to relax in the traditionally decorated hotel – all for £35 per person. Or for those wishing to eschew the whole rigmarole, chef Nigel Mendham will be serving up turkey with all the trimmings as well as plum pudding on Christmas Day. £185 per person with wine pairing. dukeshotel.com

But now the lodge has gone one better in custom-building a 38’ Catamaran for guests to stay on, from which they can see humpback whales and go deep-sea fishing. Private Label Worldwide offers 7 nights at Pambele Lodge from £3,500 per night. Price includes all meals and a variety of services and activities. FOOD&TRAVEL The hotel
The Scarlet is exceedingly modern, but smart, luxurious and eco-friendly. There are surprises in every corner of this ultra-sleek, ayurvedic-scented construct, which sits on a ridge just above the splendid and vast Mawgan Porth. Sustainability is key at The Scarlet but that doesn’t rob the hotel of its character. It’s the little touches that one notices first - instead of a reception desk, friendly staff come to find incoming guests with pots of tea and biscuits, while the hotel’s dog lurks expectantly waiting for a guest to walk him along the beautiful beach below. Split over four floors, the ayurvedic spa’s soothing aromas waft through various rooms of the hotel - the restaurant, library and the ultra-relaxing retreat upstairs. You can order tea, coffee, an afternoon snack, or something a little stronger, in every room simply by picking up the telephone. And if the serene interior isn’t enough, Mawgan Porth awaits you...
The Scarlet Hotel, Cornwall UK GETAWAY
The bedrooms
The Scarlet Hotel immediately impresses, with a door-less, curtain-less shower carved out from the sandstone bedroom wall and an equally pleasing and spacious freestanding bath lying just at the end of an oversized bed. In mine, the bath looked out onto a decked and spacious courtyard, while a modern staircase beside the open shower, led up to a lighthouse-like turret. From there is a splendid view of the vast beach. The sustainability theme continues into the bedrooms where hot water is warmed by a biomass boiler burning on wood chips and the beauty products are naturally made.
Get there
A regular service runs between London Paddington and Bodmin Parkway on First Great Western Trains, after which The Scarlet is a 25 minute drive. There is also the ‘Night Riviera’ sleeper train available for overnight journeys to the South West coast from London. firstgreatwestern.co.uk
The bathroom
Be sure to request a room with a secluded bathroom if you wish to protect your modesty from your roommate, as some of the more modern designs do not so much account for it. Whichever you opt for however, you’ll find mosaic-lined showers, capacious baths and inbuilt televisions.

Spa
A floor down from the delicious restaurant is the Scarlet Spa. A whole host of treatments (carried out with The Scarlet’s own range of Ayurvedic products) await the newcomer: from facials administered with wild-crafted herbs and hot steamed poultices, to a two-person rhassoul (a steam and mud-like hammam), there’s no shortage of indulgences on the list. To spoil further, there are yoga and meditation classes, as well as the chance to use both the Spa’s unchlorinated indoor swimming pool and reed-fi ltered natural cliff top outdoor pool. There are hot tubs nearby too that provide a perfect spot from which to gaze at sunsets.
The restaurant
Chef Tom Hunter goes by the seasons. Whilst fish is always on the menu (we are in Cornwall after all), a delicious range of meat and vegetarian options are available too. All sidedishes and salads are made up with the freshest ingredients which are, wherever possible, sourced locally. Expect hearty grouse and red cabbage in the autumn and puddings strewn with fresh berries in the summer. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner The Scarlet restaurant also manages to dish out a rather excellent Afternoon Tea. But tourists must remember, it’s jam fi rst, then cream on the scones. We are not in Devon...

TALEON IMPERIAL HOTEL, ST PETERSBURG
A weekend in St Petersburg may sound a little indulgent, but in just under four hours from London, it’s as easy as Marrakech or Istanbul. The indulgent part, however, begins on arrival. Built in the 1700s, the Taleon was the Empress Elizabeth’s summer palace (the city’s only hotel housed in a former palace). Today a regal air remains with bedrooms so big they have pillars, glistening chandeliers and hand-painted murals. It all feels spectacularly Russian. Best get into the swing of things with champagne and caviar, before heading to the Banya (traditional Russian sauna) where men in felt caps brush you down with birch leaves. This, followed by an ice-cold water bath, will leave you feeling as good as new (and may bring on a fit of giggles). The riverside hotel could not be better situated - just a stones throw from
the iconic Church of Our Savior of the Spilt Blood and the Hermitage Museum. The latter was the Tsar’s Winter Palace, and now houses one of the world’s largest art collections. For food, the hotel has two restaurants, the rooftop Victoria Restaurant and fine-dining Taleon. But for modern fare (delicious dumplings and sorbet), head to the Mansarda Restaurant. For a glimpse of rural Russia, visit Catherine Palace, a blue and white cake-like construction, just 25km away in the town of Pushkin. Take a horse-drawn Troika carriage through the gardens and finish with lunch at the chalet-style Podvorye Restaurant. The Leading Hotels of the World’s One-of-aKind stays at the Taleon Imperial Hotel, start from £2,000 (lhw.com/oneofakind). REGINA BAGLIONI, ROME
With its evocative combination of ancient ruins, Renaissance art, historic churches and statue-laden piazzas, it’s easy to see why the Eternal City remains so enduringly beguiling. Aim to stay at the Regina Hotel Baglioni, ideally located for exploring the nearby Spanish Steps, the gardens of the Villa Borghese and the glamorous stores on Via Condotti. Once a royal palace, the Baglioni is now a well-established grande dame with a hint of art deco-infused elegance; the perfect antidote to the city’s bustling streets. Under the expert direction of the hotel’s friendly concierge, you’ll discover a plethora of local hidden gems, from affordable trattorie to wellloved gelaterie. Marvel at the Sistine Chapel through a ‘skip-the-line’ early morning tour of the Vatican, where you’ll avoid lengthy queues and benefit from the expertise of well-informed guides, who bring the works of

Stroll across the River Tiber to explore the cobbled streets of Trastevere, wander through the food market at Campo de’ Fiori and pause for a pick-me-up at Caffè Greco, one of the city’s oldest pit stops. VILLA MAGNA, MADRID
There’s endless negativity about Spain’s future these days and no message bar economic gloom seems to emanate from its fine capital. But what about the reality that Madrid continues to beat the effervescent drum that for decades has meant this fountain-laden, gastronomic hot bed of festivals, fiestas, bullfights and fervent national identity, is considered one of the most popular cities of the world? Villa Magna is by far the city’s most luxurious hotel and is testament to Spain’s ongoing commitment to luxury. A recent renovation has seen Villa Magna stay true to its classical style - abundant black onyx and white marble, which contrasts successfully with the striking collection of contemporary art. For a heady dose of exquisite cuisine, the hotel has four options, but the Restaurant Villa Magna, where
Chef Manual Gutierrez boasts outstanding culinary skill, is its gastronomic piece de resistance. For the cultured visitor, the hotel is situated a moment’s walk from the city’s celebrated Art Triangle, and for sports fanatics, the Real Madrid Bernabeu stadium isn’t far in the other direction. But perhaps you’ll not want to leave Villa Magna’s walls, especially when you learn the Real and Royal suites, or should we say “small apartments”, come equipped with sumptuous Turkish baths and private terraces, which look out over what continues to be one of Europe’s most thrilling cities. Rates for Hotel Villa Magna start from £233 (EUR 290) per room per night, based on two sharing. For bookings and further information please visit hotelvillamagna.com or call +34 915 871 234. 91

A Passage to India By Christina Appleyard

A
solitary fat pigeon pecks around for snacks in the brilliant sun and deep shadows of the ancient inner courtyard of Ganesh, a cavernous warehouse shop in the ‘Land of the Kings’, the northwest Indian region of Rajasthan. Pigeons are sacred to Hindus which means they are protected and fed. To me, they’ve always seemed a pretty pointless species of bird. Looking down from a window seat on the second floor, I watch the fat pigeon flitting hopefully about the restored beauty of the 17th Century cantilevered white stone balconies. Opportunities for sightseeing in India fall into two distinct categories: the obviously spectacular, like the Red Fort in Delhi, and the incidentally spectacular, such as the wedding processions of shy brides and proud grooms, riding their decorated horses through remote rural villages. And then, of course, there is the pigeon in the courtyard. One floor up, my companions are finding great treasures amongst the best
selection of kaftans in Rajasthan. They are encouraged by the prices and the fact that Sarah Burton, head honcho at Alexander McQueen and sacrosanct after her star turn at the Royal Wedding last year, was a customer here a few days earlier. Later that day, shopping at Udaipur’s exclusive Andraab boutique, I succumb to a finely woven scarlet cashmere pashmina. It’s not as much of a ‘discovery’ though, for I later learn the shop is a favourite of Judi Dench. It is here, in the lake city of Udaipur just a short flight from Delhi, that our experience of India begins. The sun is going down and we are thankful for the damp westerly wind that cools us as we make our way down the long avenue of one of the city’s many grand parks to the cremation site of Mahatma Ghandi. This vast, flat memorial stone is the size of a small football pitch and is decorated by a single eternal flame; the absence of ornament only adds to its power. It is singularly moving to watch the (mostly Indian) visitors stop to compose themselves before placing their floral tributes on the marble edifice. Meanwhile, the chimneys of a grimlooking coal power station rise into the sky
above the park’s tree line and in the near distance, a man kneels on the grass facing Mecca. Lost in prayer, his sacred stillness is disturbed by the roar of insane traffic on the nearby road. The endless competition of car horns, spluttering rickshaws and speeding motor scooters is the mash-up that forms the soundtrack to ‘new’ India. It’s time to adjourn for a ‘sundowner’ in the shameless glamour of the Library Bar in the Leela Palace Hotel. Here the signature cocktail involves vodka and, believe it or not, a special machine that infuses it with cigar smoke. Both this hotel and its sister in Udaipur are a clever mix of the familiar and the exotic; the nervous traveller feels confident and the more adventurous doesn’t pine for authenticity. The rooms have extravagant lighting options and are decorated with luxury textiles and original contemporary Indian art. Personal butlers are available to all and a free Rolls Royce Phantom comes with the top suite. The food is a high point in both hotels but the jewel in the crown in Delhi is the classical Indian cuisine of the Jamavar. Having lessons on it with the head chef

provides a good alternative to shopping, especially since in the Old Delhi market, ‘shopping’ means perching precariously on bicycle rickshaws, becoming part of the crazy traffic system. Before setting off for Udaipur we visit the ancient Qutub Minar, a tomb built in 1199 and now a Unesco World Heritage site. If your time is limited in Delhi, it’s the one site you must see. ‘You gotta love my Banynan tree,’ says Reggie Sing, our handsome host, cousin of the Maharajah of Jodhpur and a larger-thanlife throw back to the days of the Raj. Sitting in a garden at a massive table laden with food, we are being waited on by men wearing army uniforms and saffron festival turbans. It is a scene straight from a Bollywood movie and we are grateful for the shade of Reggie’s Banynan tree (we have already drunk two large Pimm’s, mixed by the man himself). A Van Morrison CD blasts out from the colonial-style bungalow lounge into the surrounding valley and mountains. We have popped in to The Mountbatten Lodge on our way to visit the Jain Temple at
Ranakpur. If you go, ask Reggie to tell the story of how he just missed out on becoming a king. Glorious though it is, I wouldn’t advise drinking two large Pimm’s before visiting the extraordinary Adinatha Jain Temple; it makes negotiating the 24 pillared halls and focusing on the extravagant detail of the 1444 marble pillars that bit trickier. But this is an experience of ‘old’ India which is simply unbeatable. We are lucky to be travelling over the wedding season when young brides dress in red saris and walk in giggling gangs to the local village to make their matrimonial purchases. We come across dashing grooms riding proudly on decorated horses behind processions of local musicians and karaoke vans blasting out Bollywood hits. Seen from the car, you get a clue as to village activity from the colour of the turbans worn by the bare-chested locals: red for shepherds, green for carpenters, gold for priests. Back at Leela Palace, on the shores of the romantic Lake Pichola, just in time to watch the sun set over Udaipur City Palace, I think to myself, it doesn’t get much better than this – then my iPad packs up.
Reception immediately sends a sort of cyber butler – a charming young chap with a degree in IT, who arrives to fix it. I stand on the balcony and watch another young chap dressed in the traditional long kuta shirt, waving a flag and chasing pigeons in the grounds of a neighbouring hotel. I am told these professional pigeon chasers are employed to save buildings from the birds’ droppings for it is against the Hindu religion to put spikes on the buildings for fear of injury. Though of similar ages, the pigeon chaser confidently preserves the best of ancient India, whilst the cyber butler shapes a part of her future. Suddenly, a pair of those fat pointless birds land on my balcony. I find myself thinking that actually, they are really quite pretty. A 7 night trip to Delhi and Udaipur costs from £2,350 per person with 2 nights at The Leela Palace New Delhi and 5 nights at The Leela Palace Udaipur, based on 2 adults sharing, including return economy class flights and transfers. JOHN D WOOD & CO. GET FESTIVE Our magnificent Christmas tree arrives on 4th December. This signals the start of all the plans we put in place over the Autumn for The Chelsea Green Carol Service. Sponsored and organised by John D Wood & Company, it takes place at 6.30pm on Tuesday 18th December. Our old friends at RBKC Ken King and Derek McMahon will put up the tree with a crane and bring masses of coloured lights so it all looks very sparkly for the event. We have a choir from St Luke’s and they also provide a brass band under the direction of Michael Phillips. The
Reverend Brian Leathard of St Luke’s announces the carols and then draws the raffle in aid of The West London Churches Homeless Concern. More than two hundred come and go during the evening and we provide mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas cake donated by The Chelsea Green Traders. We have been doing this for more than twenty years and it is a great fun, low-key event. Andrew Buchanan, Director, John D Wood & Co. 9 Cale Street, London, SW3 3QS Tel: 020 7352 1484
In the recession, Londoners seemed to fall into a mindset that their homes were a license to print money. After five years of austerity, we seem to be realising that is not the case and pricing accordingly. This can only be positive news, even to those with a pretty limitless budget like Robbie Williams, who recently viewed a £10m home just off the King’s Road. Ruth Bloomfield
ED MEAD, DOUGLAS & GORDON Sometimes it’s good to remember where the real power lies in the London property market, with buyers. If buyers are absent it doesn’t matter how fabulous your property is, it won’t sell. Buyers are beginning to question valuations on even the best properties. Talking about reality is pointless, we disconnected decades ago, but with transactional highs of 15,000/month a decade ago in London and lows of 3,000 over the last four years, we must keep our feet on the ground.
CHRISTMAS ART COMPETITION This holiday season we are delighted to have Notting Hill Preparatory School and St. Barnabus & St Philip’s Church of England Primary School participate in our 2012 Christmas Art Competition. The entire student body from both schools from Reception to Year 7 created very colourful and fun Christmas-themed drawings. The standard was so high,
it was incredibly difficult to pick a winner! A winner from each grade will be featured in our 2012 BLM Christmas card. Cheyenna – Year 3 at St. Barnabus & St Philip’s Church of England Primary School Ruby – Year 1 from Notting Hill Preparatory School

IT’S A SELLERS GAME PETER SHAW, FEATHERSTONE LEIGH’S FULHAM GROUP DIRECTOR, COMMENTS “Levels of activity have remained strong across both the sales and lettings markets throughout the Autumn and Winter of 2012, and I anticipate this will continue into 2013. It is still a real sellers’ market out there, with levels of demand remaining high. This, combined with the on-going shortage of stock, means that correctly priced properties are selling and letting rapidly, with good prices being achieved.
KNOW YOUR MARKET GEORGINA CLARKE LETTINGS DIRECTOR JACKSON-STOPS & STAFF The later part of 2012 has seen a huge increase of property supply to the lettings market which has had a slight softening effect. No need for Landlords to worry, as prices are far from tumbling, but they should be warned that the market is more competitive. With the lack of city recruitment it is wise to be cautious about the level of corporate activity in 2013. I would advise that flexibility is required in all areas of negotiation and that it is more important to have a good tenant who can move in quickly, than to hold out for the price you think you should be getting, or got this time last year. The rental market can change from day to day as demand peaks and troughs and it is wise to listen to those that are on the frontline daily. Pay attention to your agent.

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT...
I’m a regular at Aglios on the Fulham Road where I have an obsession with their signature rigatoni dish. Also, the title for ‘best burger’ must go to the Admiral Codrington - believe me, I’ve sampled a few !
STYLISH BOUTIQUE...
I’m not really a ‘stylish boutique’ kind-of-guy, however, I’ve found a few decent pieces of menswear in The Library on the Brompton Road next to The Collection.
FINEST PLACE FOR A COCKTAIL IS...
Eighty Six (Fulham Road) serve very impressive cocktails. My personal favourite is a simple, but delicious, Jamaican Mule.
BEST KEPT SECRET
My best kept secret is just that - a secret. But for those who don’t know yet, Monday nights at the Big Easy are great - as many BBQ ribs as you can humanly get through.
HEY BIG SPENDER WILLIAM HUGHES-WARD ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR MARSH & PARSONS The Chelsea property market has experienced peaks and troughs of activity across all price bands this year. Activity up to £2 million has been surprisingly buoyant with a severe lack of property and a plethora of buyers from all over the globe looking to acquire. However, the £2 million to £5 million price band has been more challenging. Fabulous properties that would have been snapped up in a matter of weeks last year, are taking much longer to attract interest. There is no doubt in my mind the 7% stamp duty change earlier this year, coupled with other obvious distractions, has directly affected the attitudes of would-be buyers in this price band. Above £5 million, the market continues to surge. We are registering a great number of overseas buyers wanting super-prime properties and willing to pay super-prime prices to guarantee the ‘perfect’ property. Currently, we have fourteen buyers for every property and I expect this ratio to be even higher for 2013.
LOST HOUR...
I recently lost an hour walking through the Army Museum on the Royal Hospital Road. Definitely worth a visit.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICHARD CLARK
W
ith Christmas approaching, London and its residents are preparing frantically for a very busy couple of months. 2012 has been a big year for me, celebrating my marriage to my beautiful wife and buying our new home together which will make this Christmas all the more special for us. If my daughter Lola-Rose had her way, we’d begin with a trip to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, eating a combination of sweets and candy floss, washed down with Ribena, followed by daily visits to Toys R Us and Hamleys. The reality will be very different. We’ll be squeezing in shopping trips in between working hours, trying to beat the queues to buy the latest Barbie toy or iPad (hard to keep up with what a 2 and a half year old wants these days), visiting family from all over the country, filling up on turkey and Yorkshire puddings until we can’t move and listening to Christmas songs and the phrase ‘Are we there yet?’ on repeat until the New Year. However we all do the same thing every year to spend this special time with our family and loved ones and I find this all too apparent in the borough I have grown up in, work in and love. I was brought up on the Gironde Road in Fulham and, as an adult, working in the area as an estate agent for 9 years, I have seen first hand, the amazing community spirit and local support the borough embraces throughout the whole year. I joined aspire at the start of 2009 recognising that it was the sort of company that already showed a great deal of interest in being an integral part of the local community. Sponsoring the Jubilee party in Sands End in aid of Rays Playhouse in June was one of the most successful and fulfilling events we have organised. We hope that the first day of the Christmas Fair, again in aid of Ray’s Playhouse, will be equally so. Another thing I came to learn about aspire is their drive to be eco-friendly. Firstly purchasing an electric bicycle, a Gocycle and now we have gone one step further by recently buying the new Renault Twizy (see picture), an electric car perfect for quick trips around Fulham that’s easy to park! Anyone I have spoken to who has lived in or is looking to move to SW6, has the same opinion of the area; ‘It has everything you could want for all ages, all budgets and for all needs, whether you are looking for a busy life or a quiet one. On top of that it can still provide transport links close to your doorstep’. This is undeniably the main reason which explains why there has been an influx in people wanting to move to this area. Now we’re in December, we are trying to work as efficiently as we can with vendors, landlords, purchasers, tenants and solicitors to make sure that all empty homes have a family to celebrate with this Christmas!

For many, moving house is a nostalgic time. aspire’s Tom Ward talks to one happy owner who recalls renovations, community spirit and a special arrival. How long have you lived at your property? We moved into the property in 2002, so we have lived here for about 10 and a half years. What do you like most about living in Fulham? Our part of Fulham has quite a villagey feel. It’s very friendly and I know so many people to stop and have a chat to (the Sainsbury’s shop can take hours!). There’s also so much to do within Balham
Aspire.FINAL.2.indd 2
Clapham South
walking or cycling distance, and there are lots of great parks for playing football. Where did you draw inspiration from for the design/interior of your property? We wanted to renovate the kitchen and add a loft conversion so we looked through many design magazines. We also did a lot of internet research to see what worked in other people’s houses. Clapham North
Did you install any special features in the property? The skylight in the kitchen. It makes the room feel much bigger and lets in a lot of light. The kitchen works brilliantly now. We have loads of storage and lots of drawers, which pull all the way out so it’s easy to find everything. I also love the island. Are there any further changes or developments you would’ve made had you stayed at the property? Our eldest son plays the drums and our Furzedown

middle son is learning the saxophone, so a soundproofed basement would have been a necessity! What’s your favourite room in the house? I spend almost all my time in the kitchen either cooking, eating, chatting or helping the kids with their homework. It’s a bright and sunny room that is very comfortable to hang out in. What do your children love about the house? Their exact words were: ‘comfy and cosy’, ‘really bright and sunny’ and ‘just lovely!’ Battersea
Aspire.FINAL.2.indd 3
What will you miss most when you move? My son Louis was only 3 months old when we moved in so the boys have grown up here. I have so many happy memories. I’ll miss the street very much as it’s friendly and there’s a real community. We have lovely neighbours and I’ll miss them too. What’s your favourite memory at your house? This is a tough question - there are so many! Christmas is always wonderful, but I think probably the best was when my son Arthur was born 5 years ago. My other two sons were looked after and put to bed by their grandparents and when they woke up

the next morning, we were home from the hospital with their new baby brother. Their faces when they came into our bedroom were just magical.
