can see that compiling a Food and Sports Special might seem a little contradictory. And yes, the irony isn’t lost on me either. But let me explain. In life, I consider one is ‘sporty’ or ‘foodie’ and I don’t think there is anything wrong with either. So to demonstrate this, I thought I’d mesh them together – in a ball-bouncing, cocoa-crushing, horse-galloping, steak-sizzling sandwich. Which basically sums up this issue. Former Wimbledon Champion, Pat Cash, tells us what it’s like to be a ‘senior’ (he’s not yet 50) and reveals some top tennis tips for us to remember when (or for us foodies, if) we find ourselves sweating away on a court this summer. Award-winning chocolatier William Curley stirs up a mean hot chocolate for Alice Milner, whilst Catherine Hales has beef with Sophie of Sophie’s Steakhouse (literally). Assistant trainer, Richard Hannon Junior, explains what horse training really entails and after searching high and low, we showcase the perfect outfit for Ascot. FLASH THEATRE REVIEW

CABARET VOX ST JAMES THEATRE

Cabaret in London has emerged from the cultural underground and out into the mainstream and rightly so. For cabaret to work, both the performers and the venue have to work in tandem. At Cabaret Vox in the studio at St James Theatre they do in abundance. Emceed by the charismatic Niamh McNally, who performed a couple of covers as well as some of her original material, the show fitted in perfectly to the intimate venue. Highlights included Miss McNally’s duet with the second performer of the evening, Femi Temowo; the two treated the audience to a fantastic rendition of Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’. Femi Temowo’s set was truly magical, my personal high point being a sultry cover of the Louis Armstrong classic, ‘Stormy

Weather’. The headliner of the evening was Alexander Stewart and his band, whose jazz stylings had the audience jiving away in their seats. An incredibly charming frontman, Stewart (and his crooning) had the audience in the palm of his hand by the end of the evening. I would return there every evening if I could. By Catherine Hales

THEIR CLAIM Catherine Hales discovers what goes on behind the scenes at Sophie’s Steakhouse

or many, the word ‘steakhouse’ summons up images of quintessentially American décor: horns on the wall, dark vinyl booths and a pervasively masculine atmosphere dominating the dining space. Nothing could be further from the airy, modern and chic interior of Sophie’s Steakhouse on the Fulham Road. Expanses of exposed brick and light bulbs suspended from the ceiling give it an industrial feel but it is far from cold; in fact, the overall vibe even at three in the afternoon when there are few diners present is one of warmth and familiarity. In the 10 years since it opened it has become a Chelsea institution with a strong list of devoted regulars, as well as a host of other meat-lovers who enter through its doors to seek out the best steak in London. Such was its success, it allowed owners Sophie Mogford and Rupert Power to open another branch in Covent Garden in 2008. Having arrived at the esteemed eatery, I was given the opportunity to have a chat with Sophie herself, the best person to give me an insight into a place that has become a favourite

amongst diners and critics alike. ‘Organised chaos is, I think, what we tried to achieve,’ she says. From the off, Sophie’s easy and friendly manner, that always seems to have an underlying tone of self-deprecation to it, puts me at ease. It isn’t hard to imagine this woman creating a restaurant that has inspired such loyalty. One of my fi rst questions to her is: why a steakhouse? Why that particular style of restaurant over any other? Her inspiration, she says, came to her and her business partner and childhood friend, Rupert, over a long lunch in a steakhouse in New York. Both had undertaken

separate projects which they were struggling to get off the ground. And then they had what Sophie calls their ‘eureka moment’. ‘There was only The Gaucho and no other real steak offering.

American steakhouses are quite stiff; we wanted to keep the simplicity of the food but make it more fun.’ So they brought their idea to London where it took root, here, in Chelsea. And what a success it has been, for there are several aspects to ‘Sophie’s’ that make it unique. The first is the quality of the meat. If you were to ask where the steak comes from, you’d be told a lot of it is supplied from Sophie’s father’s farm in Rofford in Oxfordshire. The carcasses are sent to London, hung in the kitchens of the Covent Garden branch (due to space restrictions) and then butchered by the chefs. What doesn’t come from Rofford comes from two butchers Sophie trusts

There’s a theatre to cooking steak implicitly, for she has worked with them for years. ‘We have fantastic relationships with our butchers. And it’s wonderful having the Rofford Farm produce that we hang here ourselves.’ Sophie takes me on a tour of the bottom kitchen, and I am shown the incredibly impressive wooden slab that the meat is divvied up on. Next, it’s the kitchen upstairs, where most of the cooking takes place. Positioned amidst the

diners, for everyone to see, I question this brave approach. ‘There’s a theatre to cooking steak and I think you should display that,’ muses Sophie. ‘I think Gino [Head Chef] would have loved for us to have a much larger kitchen but we had a 100 seated restaurant in our heads and we had to squeeze it out of 2,000 square feet. That was going to be the size of the kitchen and I’m afraid that was that.’ In spite of its lack of space, the kitchen does a roaring trade and feeds the masses that flock to ‘Sophie’s’ every night with relative ease. All the items on the menu look mouth-watering, especially Sophie’s current favourite, the Black Angus Burger. But what I decide I love most, is family feel of the place. Sophie talks fondly of customers who are now friends, having eaten here since the restaurant began. Three married couples met at the bar over one of their huge signature martinis, Sophie tells me. And it’s not just the customers. In a business where so much is transient, the staff at Sophie’s have remained oddly constant too. Sophie

says they started giving out silver key rings in the shape of an ‘S’ for every member of staff who has stayed for over five years. ‘Very naff, but I keep having to order more!’ Perhaps this is the perfect testament to a restaurant that strikes the ideal balance between ‘chic Chelsea eatery’ and ‘cosy community hangout’. I leave ‘Sophie’s’ clutching a bottle of what I soon discover to be delicious steak sauce and a hankering to go straight back – straight back to order myself a ten ounce martini and a juicy ribeye. IN FRIULI Join Putney’s Enoteca Turi this month for a taste of Italy’s most eclectic region

L

ying to the North East of Italy, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia’s rich history, diverse cuisine and exquisite wines make it a fascinating region. Bordering Austria in the north, Slovenia in the east, Trentino and Veneto in the west, and the Adriatic sea in the south, its population consists of the Italian Friulani, as well as some small German and Slav communities. After World War II, Italy lost part of its eastern territory, including the Friulian capital of Trieste, to Yugoslavia. Boundaries were redrawn and properties divided – special permits had to be issued to enable farmers to access their land across the border. Today, with the introduction of Slovenia to Europe, the boundaries have relaxed greatly, and the two cultures are beginning to integrate as their communities work side by side. It is this synergy which is reflected in the region’s food, giving birth to a wonderful cuisine, full of exotic combinations and unusual flavours. In the north, a strong Austrian influence is visible with indiscriminate use of both sweet and savoury tastes across all dishes. Typical of the region is cialzons di artu, a ravioli filled with potato, chopped apple and pear, crumbled biscuits, lemon balm, basil, marjoram, raisins, salted ricotta cheese, plum jam, sugar and cinnamon. Similarly, the sweet gnocchi di susine, filled with plum and

served with cinnamon sugar, illustrates the Polish influences on the region’s cuisine and can be served as either a starter or a dessert. This germanic influence continues with the region’s love of meat. Pork is the most common and is eaten throughout the year, with cured and smoked meats, such as prosciutto San Daniele, being a speciality. These dishes are invariably accompanied by white wine, a tradition derived from the outstanding quality of the wine produced here. Friuli is one of the most important regions in Italy for white wine, creating creamy, smooth wines with good minerality. Production may be small compared to the country’s other wine territories, but the vintages produced are uniformally exceptional. However, possibly the most famous peculiarity of the region is its ‘orange wine’ – a white wine with a vibrant orange colour. Produced in the same way as red, the wine is fermented with its skin, creating its vibrant colour. Drinkers beware – this wine will throw you off balance. Despite looking and smelling oxidised, it really is this colour, and tastes more like a red than a white due to the tannins from the grape skins. This is not a white which you sip and enjoy in the

sunshine – it’s a serious, complex wine. It also works very well with food and due to its versatility, it will suit any dish. Modern and dynamic, Friuli’s rich and diverse cuisine is a delight to discover. CHOCOLATE FACTORY Alice Milner meets award-winning chocolatier, William Curley, for a history lesson in cocoa

A

morning spent with William Curley is enough to make Veruca Salt keel over with jealousy; two solid hours in Belgravia’s finest chocolate boutique with award winning chocolatier and pâtissier. A childhood dream come true! But my visit isn’t all an Augustus Gloop-esque binge – I actually learn how chocolate was first discovered and hear the story of an ambitious Scottish teenager, who quit school and set off to become one of Britain’s most exciting chocolate pioneers. For someone claiming he ‘didn’t even know what a chocolatier was’ as a teenager, it’s surprising how far William has come from his humble Scottish roots. William’s face lights up as he tells me how he left school at 15 to attend college where he was faced with a choice of either metalwork, woodwork or cooking. ‘I thought I’d do cooking for a joke! We all had a bit of a giggle, but then I started to realise I actually quite enjoyed it.’ William clearly had enough drive to break the mould his father had for him. ‘I didn’t bother to tell many people I was going to be a chef. My father was a Docker so it went down like a lead

balloon. If I’d told him that I was going to go and dig the roads he would have been delighted!’ He smiles and fondly mimics his father’s thick Scottish accent. ‘Cooking? Is that a job for mi laddy?!’ But William laughs at the irony of his father’s misconception; being a chef at La Tante Claire ‘couldn’t have been any tougher’. When William moved to London to work for Pierre Koffmann, his tortuous shifts ran from 8am in

the morning and into the early hours. William then tells of how he went on to master the art of the chocolatier and pâtissier, and also Michelin-star dining, during his time in Gleneagles, Belgium, France, The Savoy, and under the watchful eye of Marco Pierre White. I listened intently as William went on to explain the fascinating history of chocolate. Did you know that it didn’t actually exist before the 1850s? I didn’t,

until he revealed that, ‘Up until then it hadn’t been invented. All we had was a chocolate drink. Then Joseph Fry [a Quaker born in 1759 and renowned chocolate maker] mixed cocoa butter with cocoa powder and added a little sugar to make a tablet.’ The chocolate bar was born! I raise my cup of velvety hot chocolate in honour of this discovery and continue to listen attentively to William’s rippling Scottish tones. With dusty cocoa pods in-hand like a pair of maracas, William plunges our conversation into the depths of the Aztec era. Apparently I’m not alone in my obsessive hot chocolate cravings. ‘Montezuma, the Aztec Emperor, is thought to have had 50 cups of cacao a day! The Aztecs worked out that the cacao drink gave them a lot of energy and made them strong. There was something special in it; it was almost spiritual.’ As William enlightens me, I feel shocked at how little I know about the origins of this irresistible brown substance which has cast its spell over so many.

William then pokes a dark, oval shaped bean under my nose and asks if I would like to taste the cacao nib itself. The robust flavour of its raw form makes an 80% cocoa bar – something I normally regard as ‘daring’ – seem more pathetic than a Milky Bar. William assures me that contrary to popular belief, good quality chocolate shouldn’t be bitter. ‘Lots of people identify high quality, high cocoa content chocolate with bitterness, but that shouldn’t be the case,’ he says. The Amedei chocolate William uses is made from the finest and rarest beans, all ethically sourced of course. I’m struck by the depth of William’s expert knowledge and passion for his job, which he puts down to understanding ingredients, using the best and not compromising. I get the impression that, like his ingredients, William has always striven to achieve perfection, for that is something he has admired in both his mentors, Pierre Koffman and Marco Pierre White. ‘The great thing I found in the Michelin-starred restaurants I worked in, was that we were all aiming for perfection. It’s a great thing to learn in life. If the whole country was like that, we would nearly be as good as Japan. My wife, Suzue, is Japanese, that’s why I say that...’ I’m fascinated to see if William’s Japanese inspired chocolates live up to expectations. The black vinegar chocolate is presented like a square jewel in slick Japanese style. Braced for a sharp hit of vinegar, I’m pleasantly surprised by its smooth, elegant flavour. In the tradition of Fry, William experiments with unconventional ingredients, like Szechwan pepper, to offer new chocolate experiences. ‘We are quite pioneering. We try to turn people’s heads.’ However, he clearly knows when enough is enough: ‘I’ve been obsessed with trying to get seaweed in, but it just won’t go. It tastes of fish. Fish and chocolate just don’t work!’ In pursuit of perfection, William confesses that he has not always known when to switch off. ‘I think my

obsession with what I do is a source of frustration for Suzue.’ But he admits the birth of his daughter Amy-Rose has entirely changed his outlook. ‘If you had asked me two and a half years ago, I would have said, “This is all I do, this is all I want to do.” Now I look at things from a very different perspective.’ It’s clear from William’s recent awards – ‘Cookery Book of the Year’ and the ‘Next Generation Award’ – that he is still highly ambitious. He’s says he’s looking to nurture young talent, ‘to give something back’ to the industry that helped develop him. At weekends, his Ebury Street boutique is a luxury haven where five exquisite desserts are created by his highly trained chefs right in front of your eyes at the Dessert Bar. I leave full to the brim with one thought in mind; if ‘life is like a box of chocolates,’ I hope mine is a William Curley one.

Absolutely talks to David Wellesley Wesley about inspiration, imagination and The Independent Schools Show

So, what exactly made you launch the ISS? It was actually the result of chance encounter with my old school in 2006. That, and an obvious lack of information for parents when choosing the right school for their child. League tables had far too much influence and prospectuses all seemed to say the same thing. I wanted to do something that would change this. How does the ISS help potential parents make their decision? Firstly, ‘The Theatre’ provides lessons in education – we create talks which are of maximum value to parents themselves. Secondly, there’s the ‘Wise Heads’ area, which provides free, independent and impartial advice on all pedagogical matters. Finally, and probably best of all, representatives from each of the 170 exhibiting schools are there for parents to talk with face-to-face. It’s especially good for busy parents, as all your questions can be answered quickly under one roof.

What was your personal experience of school life? I started off at The Mall School in Twickenham, before moving to Ashdown House at the age of eight, and The Kings School, Canterbury at 13. I loved them all. Personally, I don’t think London is the best place for teenagers, so I’m a firm believer in weekly boarding at that stage. Not only does it let you fit in vast amounts to a school day, but you’re also surrounded by all of your best friends. It’s a great way to nurture a child’s interests, confidence and imagination. How has the show developed and what can we expect this year? New for 2013 is the London Schools Pavilion, a selection of leading local nursery schools and pre-preps. In fact, each year we attract a finer selection of school options. For instance, this year Winchester and Eton are coming for the first time. We are very excited to have such a wide range of prestigious schools on board.

What will be the next big education trend? ‘Teaching in the round’ – that is to say, teaching in smaller groups with far more student-teacher interaction. I’m also expecting to see a reduction in final exam assessments and an increase in continuous assessment, much like the GPA system in the US. And finally, what do you hope parents will take away from a day at ISS? I would hope that they’d find attractive solutions to London’s crazily competitive places. There’s a vast amount of schools on offer, each with a different curriculum and ethos. Consider alternative options – a different route isn’t necessarily a bad one. For example, two siblings may well attend completely different schools and then converge at university level. It’s worth having an open mind.

You met at Wellington College, a school best known for its military alumni. Are you it’s first fashion designers do you reckon? M: Quite possibly, but we can’t state that as fact! A lot of our peers did go into finance and property though. Funny you mention ‘military alumni’ – military is a theme, which runs through all our collections in some form.

it was in New York that I decided to set about making a cool pair of rigid men’s jeans. This dream eventually took me to Kentucky where I met these incredibly skilled artisans who had been making jeans for decades. That’s pretty much how I ended up in the fashion industry. The brand evolved quickly – first with

You both had no formal training in fashion design – some might say it was therefore quite a risky business move to have made. Did you think so at the time?

D: We actually became good pals on Marcus’s gap year – he was working in a bar in Portugal and I headed over for a holiday and stayed on. It was a pretty fun summer. But, yes, you could say our friendship was further cemented by those crazy nights on the Tyne.

M: I always knew that I wasn’t going to stay in the corporate world for long. Basically, I was sick of the weather in London so headed to Mexico with the idea of becoming a dive master! There I met a beautiful American woman and followed her back to the States. She’s now my wife and mother to our three children. I like challenges and creating things and

What are your band values? M: What we learned from those skilled people in Kentucky when we started out – the importance of craftsmanship and quality. D: Today that philosophy is applied to every single piece we create, be it a pair of jeans or even a dress. rag + bone stands for authenticity across the board.

You both then used to hang out at university when David was at Durham and Marcus was at Newcastle, living it up on the Tyne’s infamous nightclub, ‘The Boat’. Most would credit that joint for some epic hangovers – but it effectively gifted you a business together. Would you say that was true?

You then went your separate ways – into investment banking for David and telecoms for Marcus. How did you make the gigantic move to fashion?

M: It was an ode to our heritage as ‘rag and bone’ men are a part of British folklore. Those guys also used to wear cool, disheveled handmade suiting. We have a lot of pictures of them and we felt it defined our aesthetic in terms of the mix of tailoring and workwear.

M: Yes, that’s correct. As British guys in New York with no formal training or industry contacts, you could say we were approaching the industry in very unique circumstances. There was trial and error along the way (not to mention blood, sweat and tears) but we always believed in the brand. menswear, followed shortly by women’s. D: I originally got involved in the brand in the UK where I was working on the financial side. A short time later, Marcus asked if I wanted to join him in the US to help run the company. Needless to say, I didn’t have to think hard about it! I’ve always been into clothes so from finance to fashion wasn’t really a big leap for me.

Why did you choose the name: rag + bone?

You both moved to New York – how does it fare in comparison to London? M: There’s an infectious, ‘can do’, entrepreneurial spirit in New York. The city has afforded us opportunities that we probably wouldn’t have had in London. D: We’re also both lucky enough to have places in the Hamptons so we can escape out of the city madness at weekends!

These days, do you feel more British or American? M: You could say we’re New York-based Brits! We’ll always be British and our heritage has always heavily influenced our brand but we’ve definitely adopted American traits.

Will you ever move back to the UK (we like our designers here at home with us!) D: We’re both pretty settled here but who knows!

Marcus, you like the designing part. Horrible question, but where do you get your inspiration from? M: Honestly, it varies from collection to collection – for instance, for SS13 we were influenced by the Dakar Rally that I watched on TV as a kid. I guess you could say we’re inspired by travel, books, popular culture, photography, New York, our British heritage and all things military.

You launched your Womenswear in 2005 – what was that like? D: Womenswear was just the obvious next step for us. We kept being asked about it so came to the conclusion women would appreciate our aesthetic and viewpoint.

Last year you opened your uber trendy flagship European store in Sloane Square – why there? D: The area is going through a retail resurgence and as with all our stores, the space is super important. Our building is beautiful and completely works with our signature aesthetic. M: There’s a bit of nostalgia there too. My dad used to bank in the building opposite which is now a Cartier store!

What’s it like designing for Fashion Week? M: Stressful! But worth it when you watch the models go down the runway.

Kate Moss featured in your first ever ad campaign – how did this come about? D: It was our first campaign and so we obviously put a lot of consideration into it. Who better than the quintessential British model who also happens to be iconic on a global scale? Her appeal aside, Kate has an effortless to her, in both personality and style, which resonated with us as a brand.

In June 2010, you won a CFDA award for Menswear Designer of the Year – that must have been incredible... M: Yes, that was an absolute honour. D: To win that award, especially with Tom Ford in our category, was a momentous achievement for us.

I don’t feel in any way dismissive of the time I spent playing Hermione, so I’m not trying to find roles which are the complete opposite to her

S

tepping out of the shadow of Hermione Granger has arguably been the greatest challenge of Emma Watson’s career. In the film industry, the perils of typecasting are much discussed, but when the sticking tape is a billion dollar franchise – the biggest of all time – breaking free is no mean feat. That Chelsea resident, Emma, has managed to do that within two years and three films of the final Harry Potter is remarkable, and her latest project, The Bling Ring (which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last month) is another reminder of why the 23-year-old has the potential to become a long-standing acting icon. The Bling Ring sees Watson play ‘Nicki’, one of the reallife teenagers who, between 2008 and 2009, ransacked the homes of their favourite celebrity icons – Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox, Miranda Kerr et al.

The film offers an interesting vehicle through which Watson convincingly crosses over into her darkest, most absorbing role yet. The result is further validation that she is a serious and versatile Hollywood player. ‘I think people are making a lot out of the fact this is such a major diversion from Harry Potter, but in actual fact, the main driving force was not the role itself. Instead, it was the lure of working with Sofia [Coppola],’ she tells me. ‘I’ve been a big fan for many years and I was anxious to work with her. She has a very acute perspective on celebrity culture and I am so appreciative of the fact that she writes and directs her films, and has a very distinct and uncompromising sensibility. Sofia is a very smart, strong woman and I feel privileged to have had the chance to work with her.’ In preparing for the role, Emma threw herself into the world of reality TV, researching that particular type of ‘celebrity’ she, herself, attempts to steer clear of. Her subjects included such ‘stars’ as Kim Kardashian, UK show The Only Way Is Essex, and reading matter more likely to be found on the coffee tables of the footballers’ WAG brigade. ‘At first I hated Nicki because I’m so against the superficial values she embraces,’ admits Emma. ‘It would have been easy to turn her into a parody. But then I developed real insight into her perspective. I realised Sofia was trying to explore the way fame has become so important in society today. I learned a lot, as an actress, from playing a character who is so different to me and finding a way inside her psyche. ‘It’s a very interesting phenomenon,’ she continued. ‘Reality TV stars are a new and different breed of actors and actresses. It’s

a different way to tell stories and something that is very specific to my generation. Many people thought the whole reality TV trend would fade away but it’s still very much alive and it seems to be just as popular as ever. I find it a very strange thing.’ Embracing such a role could only be expected of Emma. Set up for life as a result of the JK Rowling’s creation, the actress has always been reluctant to sit back and wind her way down to an early retirement. Indeed, in the time leading up to shooting The Bling Ring, the Paris-born star combined studying Virginia Wolfe (as part of her course at Brown University, Rhode Island) with enveloping herself in the latest reality TV gossip – a fantastic contradiction. ‘I’ve never really known a point in my career where I’ve not been trying to learn or work hard on a role, so it feels natural to

carry on in that manner. I’m still evolving and discovering more about myself and I hope that journey is going to inform my work and lead to good things in future.’ But what about her past? Has Emma waved Hermione a happy goodbye? ‘No, I don’t feel in any way dismissive of the time I spent playing Hermione, so I’m not trying to find roles which are the complete opposite to her. She is a huge part of who I am and will be for a long time to come.’ Hectically splitting her time between the UK and the US, I wonder if she ever yearns for the calm serenity of Chelsea. ‘Oh definitely,’ she says, offering a wistful smile. ‘It’s a place that draws you in. It’s unique in what it offers – expensive but cool, decorated yet understated. Daniel [Radcliffe] spends a lot of time in the area too and we often bump into one another. ‘At university, I enjoyed being treated like everyone else and meeting people who have no interest in celebrities or films. It’s like that around Chelsea. It’s a rational, respectful place and doesn’t pander to its residents like LA does. I can relax here.’ And as a rational and respectful person herself, Emma Watson reveals she is precisely the sort of celebrity that is truly made in Chelsea. The Bling Ring is released on 5 July

I

f a former Wimbledon Champion told you they might play the French Open or Queens’ ‘Seniors’ this year, you would probably imagine talking to a sprightly 60-yearold, eager to keep their ‘hand in’ for health reasons. You wouldn’t imagine conversing with the fit and healthy dreamboat that is 48-year-old Pat Cash. Since our interview took place over the phone, I was unfortunately robbed of the opportunity of being able to show him, visually, what I thought of this moniker (you know – hand to mouth, raised eyebrows) so I snorted down the telephone instead. ‘The seniors, the over 45s?’ he asked. ‘I call it the top division! All my experience, my whole career, in fact, has led me to this moment…’ He paused for a second, then laughed out loud. Talking to Pat Cash first thing in the morning is a delightful way to start

the day. He had caught me off-guard ringing early – ‘Have I taken you by surprise?’ – but his easygoing nature and fun sense of humour made my list of questions inconsequential, for our conversation flowed freely and I soon decided I didn’t need them anyway. ‘I’m at the airport, coming back from Madrid,’ he told me. ‘I’ve been working on a monthly show I do for CNN. I’m interviewing players, which is a bit weird. For just under 30 years, I was the one being interviewed, and I know how corny some of the questions can be. Now I’m the one asking them!’ He laughed and I laughed too, for I knew what was coming next. A torrent of the same ‘corny questions’ he’s been answering for the last 30 years, and most likely asking all day, asked of him again by me. He took it all in his stride. ‘I got into tennis because I was a really good athlete. My dad was an Aussie rules football player so initially that was my favourite sport. But I was

also good at hockey, basketball and, of course, cricket. When I discovered tennis, I was a bit behind the other kids. But I picked it up quickly and it was a really swift move for me – from just an amateur at the age of 11 to national champion at 14.’ I imagined the amateur 11-yearold Pat, ‘just a little kid’ by his own admission, and wondered what on earth drove him to pursue the sport at such breakneck speed. Pushy parents, perhaps? ‘No, my parents had to drag me off the court! I don’t know how many times it had gotten dark and my mum would come out to find me saying, ‘Come on, you have to come home now.’ My coach would say the same. But I would always insist on a few

more serves. It’s hard to be a good player. You need that drive from a young age to be a real champion.’ By 1981, and at just 16 years old, Pat Cash was ranked top junior player in the world. The following year, he won both the junior titles at Wimbledon and the US Open. He turned professional that same year and in 1983, became the youngest player to compete in the Davis Cup final for Australia. But it wasn’t until 1987 that Cash won his Grand Slam title – Wimbledon, beating the then World Number One, Ivan Lendl, in straight sets. I couldn’t quite bear to go down the ‘corny’ route of asking what that felt like – one assumes, amazing – so I asked instead if he had expected it. ‘Well, as a kid, it’s a dream. I set mini goals, and you have to dream big, but I didn’t have a plan. I played international tournaments and then started winning them. It was bit by bit, until I got to the point where I thought, ‘I’ve got a chance to win – to actually win a Grand Slam.’ That’s what it’s all about.’ Although years later, and he’s now retired, he’s still as enamoured with the game as ever. He’s set to play in the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic at Hurlingham, which he seems very excited about. ‘It’s fun to get out there and play tennis with guys you’ve played with for years,’ he says chirpily. ‘Sometimes I go flat out, like when I’m playing Mark Philippoussis, but I don’t always hit the ball that hard or else, well, my shoulders would fall off.’ I thought about my own shoulders and decided I’m almost certain they wouldn’t stand up to one Cash serve,

whether it was delivered flat out or not. Never defeatist, I pestered him for some tennis tips. ‘Balance is key,’ he said, sagely. ‘The main thing is to keep a very steady upper body and position. Keep it very smooth, like the old-fashioned players. Roger Federer is a good example because he plays in the ‘old-fashioned’ way. But other than that, well, I’d have to watch you play to see...’ No, no Pat, I’d be far too embarrassed. I quickly steered

conversation onto tennis players and their superstitions. I’d read Pat can’t touch the ridge of a ball when he serves and thought that must be fairly cumbersome to keep up. ‘It’s a little habit – more a tactical thing when you think about it. There’s a ridge there, and you don’t want to put your fingers on it. Everyone’s got habits. But I’m not superstitious like Nadal, who has to have his

water bottles ‘exactly’ balanced…’ I asked about his black and white headband – his trademark attire. Now there’s ‘superstition’ in play if ever I saw it. ‘I just feel naked without it,’ he insisted. ‘And no I don’t have the same one, I give most of them away. I do have some of the originals – which I occasionally give to charity. And then there’s the one I won Wimbledon with… My Mum’s got that, I think.’ Father to four children (Daniel, 27, and Mia, 25, by Norwegian model, AnneBritt Kristiansen, and twins Shannon and Jett, 19, by his former Brazilian wife, Emily Bendit), Pat is now a grandfather and lives in Fulham. He chose to settle in England because he ‘needed to be here’, near Queens and Wimbledon. Now, however, it’s just ‘home,’ and as a keen guitarist, he enjoys the London band scene too much to consider leaving. I thought about Johnny Cash and Tommy Cash, and wondered if it’s a prerequisite for Cashs to be musically gifted. ‘There’s a German band called ‘Pat Cash’,’ he laughed, ‘but they’re horrible. Anything with rap is horrible.’ And with that, our interview wrapped – which to me, was also horrible. For I’d come to the irrevocable conclusion that a conversation with Pat Cash is, like many of his serves, ace. Pat Cash will be playing at the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic, Hurlingham from 18-22 June. Assistant trainer, Richard Hannon Junior talks racing and training to Edwina Langley

I was too fat to be a jockey,’ says Richard Hannon Junior, assistant trainer to (and son of) legendary racehorse trainer, Richard Hannon Senior. ‘I ate too many burgers.’ As a young lad, Richard grew up in awe of racing. Inspired by his father and grandfather (also a trainer) Richard travelled to Australia, Ireland and Canada to learn the trade, before returning to England to work for his father. They have worked together ever since and now run two stables – Herridge Racing Stables, near Marlborough, and a smaller yard at Everleigh, near Salisbury Plain. ‘I find it dead easy working with Dad,’ Richard tells me. ‘I bring in a lot of young owners to the yard and he obviously brings a lot of experience. We have our clashes, no question, but we get on very well.’

Though based in Wiltshire, both father and son have strong ties to Chelsea, prominently through their involvement with local Chelsea hotspot, the Sydney Arms. Formerly The Wellesely, the Sydney Street pub was refurbished and renamed in 2010, and now boasts its own racing enterprise, The Sydney Arms Racing Club, which syndicates shares in quality racehorses. ‘It wasn’t my idea,’ Richard continues, ‘it was a friend of mine called Richard Morecombe. He set it up with James

Ramsden, now Club Director and CEO. I have a very small share in it, effectively I own a bar stool. Apparently it’s the only racing pub in London. We’ve got three horses in training now for the Club. Two two-year-olds – Champagne Sydney and Sydney James – and three-year-old, Carry On Sydney. They’re nice horses and I hope they turn out to be winners.’ Eager to know more about the Club itself, I ask how they initiate the arduous process of selecting horses to train. ‘We buy yearlings from the sales, about 60 or 70, and people then buy them off us. We only sell them for what they cost, so there are no nasty shocks. The Club then comes down to choose one that will be good for the syndicate.’ Whilst the Club’s horses have yet to run, Champagne Sydney is due to make his debut shortly, racing locally so Club members can come watch. However, all eyes are on the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury in July. Designed for horses under £40,000, the race holds winnings of £250,000. Naturally the Club are excited about it, not to mention those members who, without it, would not have the opportunity to

be part of this exhilarating sporting world. ‘It’s very easy to get involved in,’ says Richard. ‘You just go to the Club’s website – or walk into the pub and say: ‘I’ll have a pint of lager and a share in your race horse!’ There are 20 shares in each, and there’s still some left in Sydney James.’ At roughly £2,000 per share, it’s not a break-the-bank investment either. Most of the current club members are local, which surely adds to the camaraderie of the organisation. We move on to talk about horse training in general, for whilst everyone knows what it means, I imagine few know what it actually entails. ‘How it works,’ Richard explains, ‘is you buy a horse at a sale, take them to the track and run them. There’s not a lot you can do for the ones that are no good. You just get them fit and hope that they are. We have three all-weather gallops here in Wiltshire, which we canter them on every day. Two days a week, before a race, we might take them out and go a little faster.’ Well, that seems pretty straightforward, surely there’s more to it than that? ‘No, not really. Obviously our feed is very good. We make our own: a mix of oats, molasses, cider vinegar and cod liver oil. They seem to love it.’ Simple it may seem, but it’s clearly an effective formula. The Hannons recently had a huge success with Sky Lantern, the horse that won the 200th running of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. On board was stable jockey, Richard Hughes, who is, incidentally, Richard Hannon Jr’s brother-in-law. ‘It’s great working with the family,’ Richard adds. ‘It’s very relaxed and we all get on well.’ Hughes was, in fact, instrumental in introducing Richard to Sir Alex Ferguson, who now owns two Hannontrained horses. ‘Sir Alex has lots of horses all over the country, but one day he decided to have one with us.

He’s very good friends with Richard [Hughes] – they chat away about racing and football. Sir Alex comes down to see him and he also gets on well with my Dad. We’re hoping he’ll buy some more.’ Shortly due to take over as Head Trainer from his father, I wonder if he’s unnerved by it? ‘No, not really. Nothing will change. Even the name on the licence will still say ‘Richard Hannon!’’ They’re set to run Sky Lantern in the Coronation Stakes at Ascot and Totonado in the St James’s Palace Stakes – a horse that finished disappointingly in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. ‘Hopefully he’ll come back and put his reputation straight.

hink the headline is dramatic? Think about the effectiveness of nicotine patches. The skin is an organ (our largest, in fact) that absorbs many toxins through its outer layer and carries them into our blood stream. Ironically, the sunscreen we use to keep our children and ourselves safe in the summer often contains toxic ingredients like carcinogens (causing cancer) and neurotoxins (impairing nervous system and brain development or function). Often, it causes rashes too! So this summer, make sure your sunscreen doesn’t include: oxybenzone (hormone disruptor that only blocks UVB, not UVA rays), Vitamin A (often listed as retinyl or retinol palmitate, which may speed up the development of skin tumors and lesions) or fragrance (allergy and organ-toxicity linked petrochemicals). Instead, look for titanium dioxide or zinc oxide-based mineral sunscreens. These do not penetrate the skin, but still provide crucial protection against UVA rays. My favourites are Peter Thomas Roth Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30 and Green People No Scent Children’s Sun Lotion SPF25. Lecture over! Now venture out (safely) into the sun.

Edwina Langley almost eats a restaurant and Alice Milner discovers perfect flavour combinations

W

e’ve all seen Great British Menu. And we’ve all, at some point, attempted to eat the telly as course upon course of culinary ‘sculpture’ wings its way to the judge’s chamber. No? Just me then. Well, last month, I finally made it to the judge’s chamber, only it wasn’t a chamber – it was Tom Aikens Restaurant. And although I went there to review it, in retrospect, I never felt like a ‘judge’. In fact, I now feel like I should have been judged – judged as to whether I was worthy enough to have eaten that food. Thankfully, no such snootiness takes place whilst you’re there. On the contrary, sommelier Raphael seemed to relish my wine ignorance, for it gave him full license to explain each of his choices in detail. Which were bloody good. But now, to the food. Dear reader, prepare. First up: canapés. That’s pineapple and cheese on a stick, isn’t it? Nope! It’s pea soup, the colour of a garden, served in half an eggshell tucked into an actual nest. Next to it, frozen foie gras and popcorn served on a board of bark. Yes Mr Aikens, that is a canapé. My date (an old school chum) and I stared at each other like we had done decades ago at children’s parties when the cake came out. We thought we’d hit the foodie jackpot. And we had, until the next course appeared. ‘Crab’ is a dish hugged in a thin layer of parma ham fat, served with apple foam and… sorry, I’m wiping drool off my keyboard. My friend had ‘Smoked Eel’ which came with samphire and some sort of edible sand, so beautiful to look at she was reluctant to eat it. But that

lasted a second or two. Three minutes later, her plate was clean. Main course was ‘Monkfish’ with piquillo pepper purée and confit squid. And tiny squid ravioli. I mean, who imagines these things? My date had the ‘Beef Short Rib’, with beef tendons and tongue, which she ate so quickly I’m rather surprised she didn’t swallow her own tongue. Pudding. Oh dear goodness, pudding. I had ‘Pistachio’ – a parfait and pistachio cake with praline. If I could write this in font ‘ginormous’ I would: The Best Pud I’ve Ever Eaten. My friend had ‘Milk’ – reduced milk ice cream, frozen milk and milk crisps. She foolishly took a loo break midway, which allowed me to pillage the plate with gusto, and I can tell you it was as creamy, sweet and delicate as she had promised it was. By this point, many would have downed spoons citing an attack of nausea, gout or both. Not us. The Petit Fours were hoovered up with equal rapidity, as I embarrassed myself explaining to the waiter how the

miniature macaroon actually tasted like carrot cake. He had nodded and said that was the idea. I don’t quite know how to finish this review. In truth I’m hoping I won’t have to. Like GBM and my telly, after reading the above I trust you’ve eaten the page. Or tried to. I

n a hip and rustic upstairs room in Parson’s Green, there is something new and exciting happening. A young talented team of chefs are offering a dining experience that stretches food boundaries and the imagination. Claude’s Kitchen is the remedy for anyone who has slipped into the bad habit of ordering the same usual suspects: ‘Steak Frites’, ‘Salmon Fillet’ or ‘Caesar Salad, please.’ Here, there is no boring option. As I scanned the menu, I saw Beef Cheek, Black Bream and Rabbit Terrine with hazelnut and port. Claude Compton and his right hand chef, Pete Hartley-Booth, have introduced sophisticated flavour combinations that are well and truly eye-opening.

Who would have thought that on a Thursday night my jaded palate would experience an awakening? First, from the zingy champagne Mojito served in the bustling Amuse Bouche Champagne Bar downstairs. Then, by my succulent ‘Scallops and Strawberries’ starter – infused with lavender oil, fennel and lime and presented like a vibrant Picasso painting. In fact, I was struck by the rich colour of all the organic vegetables delivered to the wooden higgledypiggledy tables in the restaurant’s lively setting. The ‘Pork Chop’ and ‘Violet Aubergine’ mains arrived at our table as hearty portions, charmingly presented, not overly manicured. We had a brief panic that the pork was a bit pink and asked our friendly waitress for reassurance. She said the chefs prefer to serve their free range, organic pork from

Kent a little pink, to keep its delicious flavour and tenderness. So we tucked in, confident in the calibre of their fresh produce. The vegetarian ‘Violet Aubergine’ dish had such a range of textures and punchy flavours that I barely even noticed the absence of meat. Apart from the glowing romantic setting (lit by kooky naked light bulbs), the chefs’ playful touches are another reason why Claude’s Kitchen is the ideal place for a fun and romantic dinner. The elegant beetroot tuille decorating the ‘Loquat and Plums’ pudding and their more-ish butter laced with rosemary, make the food an exciting talking point. ˜ Serves Two˜ 750g beef fillet, trimmed 3 tbsp olive oil Salt and pinch of pepper 1 ½ tbsp English mustard 300g wild mushrooms, finely chopped ½ tsp thyme leaves 10 slices Parma Ham 100g Brussels pâté 500g ready rolled puff pastry 1 egg, beaten Rub the beef fillet in 1 tbsp olive oil, salt and pepper. Sear in a pan on all sides, cool, then brush with mustard. Chill for 15 mins. Fry the mushrooms with thyme, in 2 tbsp olive oil, for 8-10 mins until softened. Lay Parma Ham over a long sheet of cling film, overlapping slightly. Spread a thin layer of pâté and mushrooms over the ham. Place beef in the centre and wrap the ham tightly round. When we get to Calcot Manor it is abuzz. People are arriving for a wedding in the 14th century tithe barn, 4x4s are disgorging blondes at the entrance to the hotel’s spa, small children are running around immaculate lawns and the Gumstool pub, one of two restaurants in the hotel, is packed with visiting families and well-heeled locals. This country house hotel, set in more than 220 acres of Cotswolds countryside, has managed that rare thing. It is all things to all people. It is both brilliantly family-friendly, with a staffed crèche plus a raft of children’s activities, and is also the perfect hideaway for weekending couples.

CALCOT MANOR GLOUCESTERSHIRE THE SPA

To sit immersed, a glass of cold champagne in hand, in the bubbling outdoor hot tub whilst a well-stoked fire roars in a brazier behind you and the reddening sun sets on a cold winter’s day is one of life’s true pleasures. Calcot Spa is hugely popular, and rightly so. It offers both an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam, gym and a wealth of treatments to guests and members alike. An hour’s Sculpt Facial using Rodial’s Dragon’s Blood Serum range (£70) was not only relaxing but left my tired, windswept skin feeling really soft, smooth and rejuvenated.

THE BEDROOM

There are 35 individually designed rooms to choose from: 10 dedicated family rooms housed in converted farm buildings, and 12 bedrooms in the ancient Cotswold stone manor house. Our room was a so-called ‘large family suite’, although ‘house’ would be a more accurate description of our picturesque little clapboard cottage with its own garden and front door. Inside was pure luxury with a huge double bed in a large open room, plus another bedroom with bunks and an entire first floor given over to bathroom heaven. Under the eaves, two large adjacent baths faced a wall mounted TV, and there is also a large walk-in shower. Naturally, we opted for a his ‘n’ hers bath, each filled to the brim with Aromotherapy Associate bubbles courtesy of the hotel, and wallowed in front of trashy telly until we had both turned into prunes.

THE RESTAURANT

The more formal of the two restaurants, The Conservatory, underwent an overhaul last year with a new look, new cocktail bar and a change of menu. Out went the classic ‘fine dining’ menu and in came a more informal eclectic menu. The chef has stayed the same, but judging by our meal, which was a bit hit and miss, the restaurant sadly lacks a distinct identity. The starter of Risotto Milanese and Beef Shin and the main of Marinated Beef Fillet were delicious. But the dessert of Salted Caramel Mousse was somewhat forgettable.

ORIENT From Singapore to Bangkok, Harriet Compston takes a trip back in time aboard the glamorous Eastern & Oriental Express

A

n experience so luxurious you almost can’t believe it’s true. Timeless and elegant, this is a grande dame whose journeys are staggeringly good – and totally spectacular. The Fable of the Hills is the latest extravaganza from the Orient Express and, boy, what a triumph. Starting in Singapore, it’s a magical seven-day, six-night trip through Malaysia, past buzzing cities, tea plantations and royal palaces, before emerging in Bangkok. A stay in the wedding-cake-white Raffles – whose namesake founded Singapore – kicks off the enthralling adventure. A perpetual haven, the feel is romantic colonial: traditional afternoon tea, lots of pretty chandeliers, four-posters, marble… yet it’s not stuck in a time warp. This is a place bang up-to-date with Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co lining the courtyards. There are four restaurants which cover any cuisine you can possibly imagine – ask for the legendary Singapore Sling, a lethal cocktail and another example of the hotel’s excellence. Even check-in for the Eastern & Oriental Express is done in one of their reception rooms before you’re whisked off to the station. The storybook train is just what you imagined and more. Glistening in the Asian sun, lashings of green and cream decorate the 22 carriages. It looks so classic that you expect Poirot to come round the corner at any second. He would have approved of the dress code too – relaxed refinement. No jeans or trainers, people! The imperial elegance (and the colour scheme) continues inside. Every wall is decorated in elm, cherry, teak and rosewood. Cabins are two person, postage stamp size but it doesn’t matter. Beds transform into upholstered sofas while

nifty design tricks provide bucket loads of storage (even your suitcase is swallowed up). There’s a sparkling ensuite bathroom to boot with Bulgari products and a power shower. The spirit of Agatha Christie remains: the slick making up of beds, the pushing of bells to summon drinks, the whisperings in the corridor, the knock on the door by your personal butler (the smiley Prochak is a favourite). Venture out of your newfound bedroom, down the thick carpeted corridors and there are plenty of places to relax: the saloon, library, bar, and the breezy observation carriage. There’s also neither reception nor wifi – basically no modern distractions whatsoever. The food is wonderful. Head Chef Yannis Martineau is a whizz in the kitchen – think beautifully presented Grilled Snowfish Steak accompanied by Teppanyaki of Vegetables in a Vermouth and Soya Sauce. Breakfast and afternoon tea are served in your room. Lunch and dinner (a dressy affair) boast umpteen courses and take place in the dining car with its archetypal gold lamps and brass overhead racks. Drinks and canapés are served beforehand so you can get to know your fellow guests (a fascinating mix of avid travellers, anniversary couples, siblings, best friends et al). Days are filled with incredible adventures (there are several options each day). Beginning with the crossing of The Straits of Johor into Malaysia, the train snakes its way to the first stop – the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. An industrial hotspot, sprawling factories squeeze in amongst the mosques, bazaars and occasional British beauty (the cricket ground is very English). Having climbed past massive banana trees and luscious vegetation, a cuppa awaits in the Cameron Highlands. A tapestry of tea plantations, it’s mind-blowingly scenic with strawberry farms and flower galleries lying prettily by the wayside.

The vibrant island of Penang serves as the highlight of the trip. Founded in 1786 by Englishman Captain Francis Light, its colonial capital Georgetown radiates colour with its rich blend of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures. Hair-raising trishaws speed around in their bossy way as the sweltering streets heave with people, market stalls and places of worship. Dinner is hawker food – super delicious (the fish is excellent), cheap as chips and served in an outdoor eating area as buzzy as a honeypot. As the train rattles on, the Malaysian jungle gives way to the open Thai countryside. The thatched houses on stilts remain but bright green rice paddies now emerge, peppered with straw-hatted farm workers steering water buffalos through the fields. The wildlife part of the expedition has now begun. Decamp to the Monkey Training College at Surat Thani where its skillful ‘students’ are taught how to choose a ripe coconut and collect them from the trees. Or visit an elephant camp and jump on a ride with a mahout.

The River Kwai is the last stop of the journey – and a very moving one. After a tour on a local barge, the Thailand-Burma Railway Museum gives a horrific insight into the atrocities inflicted on the POWs working on the project. The Don Rak War Cemetery next door provides a raw testimony to the 6,982 soldiers who had died there. As The Fable of the Hills comes to a close and you draw into Bangkok, you don’t want to leave. In a surreal way, the train has started to feel like home. However, the madness of the city soon awakens you from any slump of sorrow. As does your beautiful bed for the night – the Mandarin Oriental. A cocoon of comfort towering above the slums, the rooms are fresh with clean lines and boast a view which will take your breath away. The numerous restaurants are fantastic – choose Sala Rim Naam (a hop across the water) or hang out in the Author’s Lounge, where Somerset Maugham, Tennessee Williams, Joseph Conrad and other literati have held court.

Bangkok’s a whirlwind but worth a few days. Head to the Grand Palace, which is lined with so much gold you are almost blinded. Or visit Jim Thompson’s house, made up of six antique Thai houses – so beautiful that you want to change your décor back home immediately. But this is also a city of contrasts. In amongst these landmarks lies the ‘forgotten people’ and the watery slums they live in – shocking and a stark reminder of the opulence the Orient Express lavishes upon you. It’s hard heading home. This is an experience you know you’re unlikely ever to repeat. But in the ever-wise words of Monsieur Poirot: ‘Life is like a train, Mademoiselle. It goes on.’

IN FRIULI Join Putney’s Enoteca Turi this month for a taste of Italy’s most eclectic region

L

ying to the North East of Italy, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia’s rich history, diverse cuisine and exquisite wines make it a fascinating region. Bordering Austria in the north, Slovenia in the east, Trentino and Veneto in the west, and the Adriatic sea in the south, its population consists of the Italian Friulani, as well as some small German and Slav communities. After World War II, Italy lost part of its eastern territory, including the Friulian capital of Trieste, to Yugoslavia. Boundaries were redrawn and properties divided – special permits had to be issued to enable farmers to access their land across the border. Today, with the introduction of Slovenia to Europe, the boundaries have relaxed greatly, and the two cultures are beginning to integrate as their communities work side by side. It is this synergy which is reflected in the region’s food, giving birth to a wonderful cuisine, full of exotic combinations and unusual flavours. In the north, a strong Austrian influence is visible with indiscriminate use of both sweet and savoury tastes across all dishes. Typical of the region is cialzons di artu, a ravioli filled with potato, chopped apple and pear, crumbled biscuits, lemon balm, basil, marjoram, raisins, salted ricotta cheese, plum jam, sugar and cinnamon. Similarly, the sweet gnocchi di susine, filled with plum and

served with cinnamon sugar, illustrates the Polish influences on the region’s cuisine and can be served as either a starter or a dessert. This germanic influence continues with the region’s love of meat. Pork is the most common and is eaten throughout the year, with cured and smoked meats, such as prosciutto San Daniele, being a speciality. These dishes are invariably accompanied by white wine, a tradition derived from the outstanding quality of the wine produced here. Friuli is one of the most important regions in Italy for white wine, creating creamy, smooth wines with good minerality. Production may be small compared to the country’s other wine territories, but the vintages produced are uniformally exceptional. However, possibly the most famous peculiarity of the region is its ‘orange wine’ – a white wine with a vibrant orange colour. Produced in the same way as red, the wine is fermented with its skin, creating its vibrant colour. Drinkers beware – this wine will throw you off balance. Despite looking and smelling oxidised, it really is this colour, and tastes more like a red than a white due to the tannins from the grape skins. This is not a white which you sip and enjoy in the

sunshine – it’s a serious, complex wine. It also works very well with food and due to its versatility, it will suit any dish. Modern and dynamic, Friuli’s rich and diverse cuisine is a delight to discover. y estate agency career all started with a move to London to study at the Royal College of Music, which might just seem like a great conversation starter, but is actually true! I was living in student halls in Bayswater and a friend asked if I’d cover her ‘Saturday job’ at a local estate agent. Given the ‘hand-to-mouth’ lifestyle I was living, the money was obviously too good to refuse, especially as she’d said to me that it would be a day of reading the paper and unlimited web access! When Saturday came, I was greeted by a negotiator who was suffering from the most incredible hangover and simply couldn’t conduct his viewings. He gave me his keys, a map, his mobile and a list of the day’s appointments - all on the promise of a pint. Now, 13 years later, I’m definitely an estate agent! “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” As an estate agent who has worked in all corners of our city, I couldn’t agree with Johnson’s words more. The property, people and most importantly the diverse little village-type locations that make up London are beyond exciting and always within easy reach for exploring. After more than a decade, I still feel that I’ve barely scratched the surface and with two young children, the London I’m discovering and enjoying now is incredibly different to that of my first years here.

The lettings market is unbelievably busy, whether rental prices are static or increasing there are always people moving within and to London. The nature of the market is that there is definitely a summer peak each year, but in the locations where we have offices, particularly in Kensington & Chelsea, there’s always a vibrant lettings market throughout the year – it’s just more frantic at certain times and we’re heading into that season now! It feels obvious to say, but Chelsea really is one of London’s highlights. Places my parents went to in the 60’s are still thriving and are as popular as ever. I love the iconic landmarks, which a lot of residents seem to overlook. The National Army Museum on Royal Hospital road is a place that you wouldn’t think would make you smile, but when Captain Clean is in residence, it’s an event not to be missed. One of my favourite places has to be the V&A, a stunning building with great exhibitions and almost always no queues! And a reliable haunt has to be at the Admiral Codrington where I’ve never been let down. There’s always been a fairly healthy supply of properties in Chelsea available to rent and as prices catch up rapidly in other boroughs the value of renting in one of the most famous locations in London just gets even better. 020 8846 8605; plittlemore@marshandparsons.co.uk
