ew year's resolutions anyone? It may be a cliche but it's not a bad idea to introduce some improving habits, and January's as good a time as any. My resolutions might include clearing out my inbox – unless 2024 finally marks the official end of email – and the cupboard under the stairs. Organising better home storage might not be the most glamorous of resolutions but it's likely to be one that many of us aspire to. It's funny that a task as unsophisticated as clearing out a drawer can be the subject of so much procrastination – even, possibly, over a period of years – but then in fact take less than an hour to finish once you actually start. We are planning a focus on storage solutions later in the year but for this January issue, we're concerned with health and wellbeing. 2024 is set to be the year we look and feel our best, and a wellordered home is strongly linked to a greater sense of wellbeing and satisfation. So forget Dry Jan and sort out a cupboard instead. Happy new year to all readers!

TO WATCH Recommended by Lisa Baker

An enigmatic new gallery concept has arrived on the scene. Established by Ayman Daouk and his partner Colette Gibson, Secteur Privé will host seasonal exhibitions and pop-up showcases globally from conceptual private spaces, eschewing the impersonal aesthetic of the typical ‘white cube gallery’ experience. For their inaugural show, Secteur Privé are showing Mark BrazierJones and the visionary artefacts and sculptures from this master craftsman. Where Do I Begin is an exhibition of sculptural works, reflecting the artists’ belief in in the alchemical power of art to transform the everyday. His new pieces are entitled Manifesting Machines, spiritually charged sculptures which channel the energies of the natural world, designed by Brazier-Jones as esoteric objects for deeper meditation and spiritual exploration. Each Manifesting Machine has been crafted according to a vibrational resonance, serving a practical purpose for spiritual or meditational practice as well as functioning as sculptural artefacts. In the last four decades, Brazier-Jones has amassed a star-studded clientele that includes actors, art collectors and rock music royalty and his work features in seminal museum collections around the world, London’s V&A, Museum of Art & Design in New York and Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as well as many important private collections. Signature works including his lush green Tally Ho chair and several other items of furniture appear in 50 Shades of Grey.

Where Do I Begin runs until 22 January 2024 at Secteur Privé secteurprive.co

The National's new production of Roald Dahl's The Witches is a riotous family show

T

he National's new production of Roald Dahl's The Witches has a lot to live up to. There's the book, of course, but there's also the memorable Nic Roeg film that's far too scary for children and immortalises the Headland Hotel in Newquay. Moreover, this production will inevitably be compared to the unstoppable Matilda The Musical, now in its 13th year and setting a high bar for any Roald Dahl musical adaptations. Written

Laura Medforth (Mum), Bertie Caplan (Luke), Richard David-Caine (Dad) and The Witches company Credits Marc Brenner

Katherine Kingsley as the Grand High Witch Credit Marc Brenner

by Lucy Kirkwood, known to the National for The Welkin and Mosquitos, and directed by Lyndsey Turner of last year's production of The Crucible also at The Olivier, this is a clever, witty and contemporary version of the dark and strange tale. Dahl's language is matched by this smart, knowing script that's full of laughs and catchy tunes. The central – and ancient – idea is that witches are hidden among us, disguised as regular women from all walks of life. The school nurse, the lollipop lady, kind woman in the sweet shop: all of them could belong to the child-hating, wig-wearing, gruesome toed and fingered clan that's dedicated to eliminating children all over the world. When young Luke's parents are killed in a car crash, he is left with his Norwegian granny whose lifelong mission happens to focus on taking revenge on witches. And so they end up in Bournemouth, where Luke and his friend Bruno end up being brutally transformed into mice (though that doesn't stop the tale from ending happily). It's a colourful, energetic production that transforms the Olivier's huge stage into an impressive hotel (the dining scene is an excellent feat of choreography). The witches' infamously terrifying transformation scene is striking but doesn't rival the film in its fear factor – but audiences should be over eight years old, it is recommended. For age 8+ Until 27 January nationaltheatre.org.uk

International cabaret show La Clique pitches its Spiegeltent in Leicester Square By PENDLE HARTE

TARA BOOM

“A totally madcap topless juggling act involves strapping a popcorn machine to her head” LJ MARLES

L

a Clique is back. The cabaret variety show that started out in Edinburgh in 2004 and went on to tour the world has brought its famed Spiegeltent to the middle of Leicester Square. Memorable acts over the years have included Ursula Martinez's infamous Hanky Panky magic striptease (where is the hankerchief?), Miss Behave with her impossible sword swallowing and the record-breaking Norwegian contortionist Captain Frodo. Now there's a new lineup for this West End Christmas spectacular and as usual, it's an international mix of talent comprising just six performers. David Pereira is astounding with acrobatics on silks, and then comes into his own with a clever act involving shaving foam and a razor. LJ Marles is another acrobat with and his comedy rapper act is breathtaking. Cabaret Decadance is a duo of Canadian puppeteers who bring dancing figures to life with enormous skill, even when the puppet is reduced just to a pair of lips. One of the original La Clique acts, Ukrainain hula hooper Yulia Pykhtina is graceful with her beautiful hoop dance. For me, the star of the show is Tara Boom. Wandering onto stage as a slightly goofy popcorn seller (spoiler alert) she launches into a totally madcap topless juggling act that involves strapping a popcorn machine to her head, plugging it in, filling it up and letting it spit popcorn in all directions as she covers herself in butter and salt. It's the kind of original, highly skilled and slightly bawdy act that La Clique is

TARA BOOM

known for and leaves us laughing in utter disbelief for hours. The multi-talented Boom returns with an entirely different foot juggling umbrella act that's seamlessly elegant and rhythmically beautiful, showing her diverse range of skills and her essential burlesque character. We'll hope to see more of Tara Boom. Unreserved stalls seats £49.50 Booking until 6 January, Spiegeltent Leicester Square lacliquetheshow.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Bel canto The Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv comes to the Richmond Theatre with three popular operas

CARMEN

“Exquisite sets include a spectacular Japanese garden”

S

enbla returns to Richmond Theatre in 2024, presenting three stunning classical Ellen Kent productions performed by the Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv. Featuring international soloists, highly-praised chorus and full orchestra. Verdi's La Traviata (22 January), the tragic tale of searing passion and memorable music, tells of the passionate loves and life of the consumptive courtesan, Violetta. Highlights include the Brindisi, the best-known drinking song in opera, the duet Un Di Felice and Violetta’s haunting aria Addio Del Passato. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. Bizet’s masterpiece, Carmen (23 January) is an evening of passion, sexual jealousy, death and unforgettable arias. Carmen is the story of the bewitching gypsy girl whose tantalising beauty lures a soldier to desertion and leads to her own murder. The opera includes some of the most evocative and best-loved melodies in opera –The Habanera, The Seguidilla, The Flower Song, The Chanson Bohème and perhaps the best-known baritone aria of all, The Toreador’s Song. Ellen Kent’s Madama Butterfly (18 March), winner of the Best Opera Award by the Liverpool Daily Post Theatre Awards, returns in a new production with exquisite sets including a spectacular Japanese garden and fabulous costumes including antique wedding kimonos from Japan. One of the world’s most popular operas, it tells the heartbreaking story of a beautiful young Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY

Ellen Kent personally hand-picks and directs all soloists to create visually beautiful and moving productions. She said: ‘I started working with Ukraine in 2000 and have continued these strong relationships ever since, working with the Odessa National Opera for which I was awarded The Golden Fortune Honorary Medal from the President of the Ukraine, as well as the Kharkiv National Opera and for the last couple of years with the brilliant Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv.’ Tickets available at atgtickets.com/ Richmond starting from £13.

Wine recommendations for the month By THE WINE SOCIETY

The Society's Exhibition Central Otago Pinot Noir 2022  £18.50 Central Otago, in New Zealand's South Island, is famed for the quality of its world-class pinot noir. The warm days and cold nights create wines with ripe, full and generous cherry notes, alongside a full structure and vibrant freshness. This is a prime example.

Domaine Jérôme Fornerot, Saint-Aubin Champ Tirant 2020  £29.00 Bright and fresh white Burgundy, with appley aromas and flavours. It was barrel fermented and kept on its yeast lees to develop some mid palate weight, and there is good length of flavour for a village wine.

Fiano Mandrarossa  £10.95 Organic Sicilian fiano of great character with apricot and peach flavours and a salty tang on the crisp, dry finish. One for chargrilled swordfish or tuna, simply dressed with lemon juice. The fiano grape, native to Campania, has adapted exceptionally well to the Sicilian climate. Since it was founded back in 1874, The Wine Society has dared to do business a little differently. Bringing together a community united by a shared love of wine, The Society is a co-operative and owned by its members. This means there is no requirement to pump profit into annual dividends or bonuses for shareholders – all profits go back into the business. The Wine Society welcomes all wine lovers. Grilled Eggplant with Garlic Serves 2 Eggplant (aubergine) is one of the most popular vegetables at late-night barbecue stands in China. In this recipe, we grill the eggplant in the oven with the same seasonings as those used in barbecue dishes. it can be served as an appetiser for dinner or can be eaten as a snack. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 400g (14 oz) long purple eggplant (aubergine) • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) canola (rapeseed) oil, plus extra for brushing • 5 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 2 bird’s eye chillies, destemmed and finely chopped • 2 tablespoons chilli flakes • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) soy sauce • 1 tablespoon vegan oyster sauce • 1 spring onion (scallion), roughly chopped

METHOD Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). Brush a thin layer of the oil on the outside of the eggplant, then place them on a baking tray on the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 15 minutes, then turn them around and cook for another 10 minutes. 3 In a bowl, mix the garlic, chilli, chilli flakes, cumin, soy sauce, vegan oyster sauce and the oil. Put the eggplants on a baking tray, cut them open lengthways and flatten, then brush the seasoning evenly over the eggplants. Bake for another 6–8 minutes then remove and scatter over the spring onion. 1

Spring Onion Tofu Serves 2 Spring onion tofu is a popular home dish that requires very few ingredients: the tofu is simply simmered in a sauce with lots of spring onion until tender, juicy and full of flavour. it is also one of the quickest tofu dishes to cook if you don’t have much time to prepare a meal. =Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons soy sauce • 2 tablespoons vegan oyster sauce • 1⁄2 teaspoon cornflour (cornstarch) or potato starch • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) canola (rapeseed) oil • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 10 g (1/4 oz) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped

• 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) tender tofu, cut into 1.5 cm (1⁄2 in) dice • 3 spring onions (scallions), roughly sliced

METHOD 1 Tofu and spring onion (scallion) are a match made in heaven. Spring onion is almost always needed in tofu dishes, as it brings out extra flavour in the tofu. 2 In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, vegan oyster sauce and starch until well combined. 3 Heat a wok over a medium heat and, once hot, add the oil. Add the garlic and ginger and stir for 30 seconds, then add the tofu dice, moving them gently so they don’t break or stick to the pan. After 1 minute add the soy sauce mixture and stir gently. 4 Cover with a lid and allow to cook for 3–5 minutes, gently tilting the pan occasionally to avoid the tofu sticking. Remove the lid and add the spring onion. Let it cook until most of the sauce is gone.

Stir-Fried Rice Noodles Serves 2

In this recipe, the rice noodles are first cooked then stir-fried together with different ingredients. Check to see if you can find sword beans at your local Asian grocer, but if not, runner beans work just as well for this recipe. You can also add any other ingredients you like. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes

36

• 350 g (121⁄2 oz) fresh rice noodles, or 200 g (7 oz) dried rice noodles • 120 ml (4 fl oz) canola (rapeseed) oil • 200 g (7 oz) tender or firm tofu, cut into strips • 6 sword or runner beans, cut into 3 cm (11/4 in) lengths • 100 g (31⁄2 oz) tinned bamboo shoots, drained and cut into thin strips • 2 shallots, thinly sliced • 100 g (31⁄2 oz) light-green zucchini (courgette), cut into thin strips • 5 shiitake mushrooms, soaked for 2 hours then cut into thin strips • 5 g (1⁄8 oz) wood ear mushrooms, soaked for 30 minutes then cut into thin strips

1 Bring a saucepan of water to the boil and cook the rice noodles until almost al dente (about 2 minutes less than the packet instructs), then pour them into a sieve and run them under cold water to wash off the starch. Drain, then soak them in fresh cold water. Be careful not to overcook the noodles, otherwise they will start to break while stirfrying. 2 Heat a wok over a medium–high heat and, once hot, add half of the oil and pan-fry the tofu until both sides are golden and crispy, then take it out. 3 Add the remaining oil and increase the heat to high. Add the sword beans and stir for 1 minute, then add the bamboo shoots and stir for another minute. Add the shallot and stir for 30 seconds, then add the zucchini and stir for another 30 seconds. Add the shiitake and wood ear mushrooms and stir for 1 minute. 4 Add the rice noodles and tofu and stir everything together. Add the hoisin sauce, soy sauce and vegan oyster sauce and mix everything together well, stirring for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce has been fully absorbed by the noodles. Add the sesame and spring onion.

ABSOLUTELY eats out…

“This is a new look that feels like an authentic, old one”

CLARIDGE’S The glamorous Art Deco dining room has a new look and an excellent menu

FOOD High class dishes, beautifully served

B y PENDLE HARTE

s lunch at Claridge’s one of the best treats that London has to offer? Especially when it’s lunch in December –and particularly when the restaurant has just had a stylish new refurb. This is probably one of the world’s most beautiful dining rooms, its Art Deco interior enhanced by references to 1930s Austrian brasserie design in a new incarnation from the Bryan O’Sullivan Studio. Claridge’s is known for its Art Deco heritage, but also for its enthusiasm for new design and reinvention, so this is a new look that feels like an

DECOR authentic old one. It’s all mirrors and glass wall lights, comfortable leather banquettes and beautiful stained glass skylights (these were rescued from a previous incarnation). And because it’s December, there are huge goldsprayed hydrangeas and a central tree (not a fir) draped in tasteful baubles (contrasting with the conceptual and much more garish Louis Vuitton mirrored tree in the lobby). It’s a well-crafted menu, both classic and contemporary, with festive options. We start with black truffle

Art Deco glamour and comfort

PRICE Of course, not cheap. Main courses £38 - £98

buckwheat crumpets, which are unusual and lovely, topped prettily with curly slivers of truffle. Starters of baby beetroot salad and confit aubergine are equally pretty and excellent: aubergine sweet and smoky, beets fresh and bright. The kitchen has a good visual sense that’s not fussy, and a main of sea bass with fragrant saffron foam is simple and stylish. My roast Norfolk Bronze turkey promises all the trimmings and delivers them without the usual plate overload: this is an elegant Christmas lunch. A slightly blackened carrot and single parsnip, perfect sprouts and roast potatoes, neat slices of meat and a small roundel of stuffing. Puddings are spectacular. Pineapple vacherin with coconut and coriander is a chewy meringue swirl with herb-infused pineapple curls that’s impossibly delicious, and roasted saffron apple comes with smoked creme fraiche and a side of cider granita as a clever, multi-textured creation. Staff are lovely, service is impeccable and the sommelier’s wine recommendation wonderful. It’s definitely the best treat.

R E S I S TA N C E OVERLOAD It's impossible to overstate the benefits of resistance training, encompassing weightlifting, resistance bands and bodyweight exercises on overall health and fitness. It enhances muscular strength, promotes better posture and reduces the risk of injuries. Regular resistance training contributes to increased lean muscle mass, boosting metabolism and aiding weight management. It improves bone density, crucial for preventing osteoporosis. And it's not just physical gains: resistance training elevates mood by releasing endorphins, reducing stress and anxiety. Additionally, it enhances cognitive function and sleep quality. As a versatile practice adaptable to various fitness levels, it empowers individuals of all ages to achieve personalized fitness goals, fostering a holistic approach to well-being. t’s a bitterly cold Friday morning when I visit the new Blink Brow Bar salon on Avery Row in Mayfair. I’m freezing because I’ve worn the wrong coat for the plummeting temperatures, but I soon warm up once inside the cosy and inviting space. With a chic green and gold interior, it’s only been open for a few months, but it’s already a popular spot with beauty insiders. Blink Brow Bar is well-known for being the authority on all things brows, but I’m actually booked in to see the salon’s expert lash technician for a Dream Lash Lift/Curl and Tint. Sitting me back on one of the comfy reclinable chairs, she asks if I’d prefer a lift or a curl. As my natural lashes are quite short and stubby, she recommends a lift to lengthen and give me a fluttery lash line. First she perms my lashes straight, which requires me to keep my eyes closed. There’s a little bit of waiting, but it’s completely painless and the time goes quickly whilst we chat. Once my lashes are permed, I get to check the progress in the mirror. My lashes already look amazing, but there’s still the tint to go. The lash technician recommends a blue-black shade, to give me a glossy finish. She explains that pure black can appear quite flat. There’s a little bit less waiting this time, followed by an eye-bath, to cleanse. The results are very pretty – like I naturally have super long lashes. Lasting 5-6 weeks, the best bit is there’s no need for eye make-up. I can see this becoming addictive. BLINK BROW BAR Avery Row, Mayfair, £95

Carly Glendinning tries Pliability, a fitness app focused on mobility training

’ll confess, I’ve never been that flexible. My hamstrings are so tight that even touching my toes is a challenge. So I was intrigued when I was invited to try Pliability, a fitness app focused on mobility training. Formerly known as ROMWOD, Pliability was originally for CrossFit athletes. Since rebranding, they have expanded to provide daily stretching routines aimed at golfers, runners, swimmers, and gym-goers (like myself). Many people focus on strength and stamina in their training, underestimating the importance of mobility, coordination, and balance. Endorsed by professional athletes (including golfer

Lee Westwood), Pliability’s routines are a fusion of mobility, yoga, prehab, rehab, recovery, mindfulness, and strength. The first time I log in to the app, I am pleased to see that the daily routines are quite short. Most of the videos are 23-24 minutes, and I can easily fit a session in after I get back from the gym. The app suggests a new video for me to do each day, although there are hundreds to browse. The videos show two ‘models’, who take you through several poses in sequence. The one on the left shows less flexibility and the one on the right shows more. I am instructed to hold each pose for around 2-3 minutes by the voiceover. You need

very little equipment to do Pliability. All you really need is a mat, although blocks and resistance bands can come in handy if you are less flexible and need to modify the poses. After a few days I find myself really getting into it. It’s satisfying to mark the videos as ‘complete’ and see my progress charted in the app. Holding each pose and really focusing on it also becomes quite relaxing. In a few short weeks I’ve noticed a difference in my flexibility, and who knows, maybe I’ll even be able to touch my toes before too long. £16.95 per month or £169.95 annually pliability.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Sleep secrets

How to achieve the perfect night’s sleep? Start with the perfect mattress By EVE HERBERT

T

he perfect night’s sleep is the holy grail of life. The quality of our sleep defines our day – and a good night will lead to happier, more productive and successful waking hours. But how to achieve it? Most important is, of course, the bed itself. Swedish company Carpe Diem Beds was founded 25 years ago by chiropractor Börje Thuleskär, a firm believer in the importance of sleep for body and mind. He sought out the best mattress on the market, but wasn’t impressed by it. One day he fell asleep on a bed of heather by the sea and discovered that it was more comfortable than any bed. This led him to embark on a quest to build the perfect bed, one that would mimic the feeling of weightlessness he had had on the heather. The quest took thousands of hours and a partnership with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden. The final result is Carpe Diem Beds' patented Contour Pocket System, which has a

unique cushioning ability. It gently yields and supports at the same time, instantly moulding to your body’s contours and changing with your every movement. The sensation is unique: almost weightless and quite unlike most standard mattresses. Just like lying on a bed of heather on the cliffs by the Swedish sea, in fact. Carpe Diem Beds has a showroom on Wigmore Street where visitors can experience the company’s ethos first hand, and there are displays at Harrods and Heal’s too. The store is dedicated to optimising the bedroom environment to create an oasis of calm, and visitors can experience the company’s ethos first hand under the guidance of manger Rui Franca. And while choosing the perfect mattress for you is at the heart of the experience, there’s a strong focus on bedroom design and streamlining, so that the bed you choose can be enclosed in an environment that’s conducive to optimum sleep health. It’s a very calming place and people are encouraged to take their time. The consultation involves trying every bed until you find the one you like best. “We like people to come and spend an hour or two trying the beds. There’s a widespread misconception that a firm mattress is better for you, says Rui. “But we believe that you should sleep in the bed, not on the bed, and our contour pocket system is meant to contour your body so that you feel you’re sleeping on a cloud.” Top of the range is Vindö, the most innovative adjustable bed that offers automatic lumbar and neck support, with head and foot rests that can be lowered or raised to suit your needs. It has a variety of massage functions that can be controlled via an app, as well as built in under-bed lighting. Skaftö is Carpe Diem Beds’ most exclusive continental bed and its moveable mid-section can be adjusted, with built-in back support customised by remote control. There’s no better single route to wellbeing for body and soul than rest and sleep, and that’s why a Carpe Diem bed is a long term investment in your overall health. 15 Wigmore Street, W1 020 3982 3252; carpediembeds.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Shape

UP Losing excess weight around your middle is not simply a vanity issue, it’s a major health issue too. Dr Kim offers advice

T

he holiday season inevitably leads to a few weeks of relaxed eating and drinking and many of you will be starting to think about getting back into shape. A focus on a healthy diet and exercise is the best way to start, but the reality is that some people struggle to lose weight around the waist. Newer sophisticated machines are able to utilise highly effective fat reduction and muscle contraction technologies to help boost the process.

Why is the waist measurement so important?

If you carry weight around your waist you have an increased risk, even if your BMI is within the healthy range. As a general rule if your waist circumference is more than half your height you are at risk of insulin resistance, the precursor to diabetes. Adipose tissue around the organs of the stomach (visceral fat) is metabolically active, producing hormones and inflammatory substances that are associated with increased risk of chronic disease including heart disease, dementia and cancer. In one clinical study, men with the highest waist-to-height ratio

(up to 80% of their height) lived 16.7 years less than the study average. Insulin resistance means that your body doesn’t process your blood sugar all that well and it can leave you feeling lethargic and hungry, even after eating, which adds to the challenge.

Concerned with strengthening and toning?

For those who are preparing for February ski or winter sun trips, technologies that utilise powerful muscle contractions can help enable high intensity workouts to help you get fit and trim. BTL Emsculpt utilises high intensity electromechanical stimulation (HIFEM) to deliver supramaximal contractions simulating the effect of 20 000 sit-ups (or squats) in a single 30-minute session. Not only is Emsculpt ideal to help toning and firming your buttocks, but BTL Emsculpt has the advantage of being able to strengthen your core abdominal, arm and calf muscles to help build muscle strength and protection against injury. LipoFirm Triple Action Fat Reduction has long been the celebrity favourite with treatments like the LP Bum Lift and abdominal sculpting regularly featuring on social media. Dynamic Muscle Activation results in powerful muscle contractions that allow the body to burn fat efficiently,

and highly effective radiofrequency is used for further fat reduction and skin tightening. Not only do these treatments help your clothes fit better, they also have the added benefit of reducing visceral fat. BTL Emsculpt is also used to treat the separation of abdominal muscles seen after pregnancy or weight gain, with an average 19% improvement seen in clinical studies. If your body is resisting your efforts to lose weight, then speak to a trained health professional about a personalised programme.

EYE LIFE At The Eye Place, the way we look after dry macular degeneration is changing

A

ge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the biggest cause of irreparable sight loss in the UK, leading to the loss of the central field of vision. It occurs when the macular (or central) retina develops degenerative lesions. Several forms of AMD exist within the sphere and several factors can drive its progression, but the main factor with all forms is the ageing process. Marked AMD affects 4.8% of people aged 65 years or over, and 12.2% of people aged 80 years or over. Around one in every 200 people has AMD at 60, and by the age of 90 it affects one person in five. The two main ways of describing AMD are wet or dry. Both types are detected using deep eye scanning technology. Wet shows as fluid within the retinal tissues and dry generally as lumps and bumps (drusen) within the retinal tissues. Dry AMD is the more common form, and until now our ability to manage the progression has been limited, reduced to simply managing lifestyle factors, spectacle protection from more harmful blue light from the sun, diet, and the use of supplements. Wet AMD requires the earliest detection possible and requires an urgent referral to have intravitreal injections by an ophthalmologist. However, The Eye Place has now invested in the latest alternative technology to manage dry AMD to help promote the stability of deeper macular retinal layers to help with the structure’s longevity. The Valeda light delivery system (Lumithera) is a non-invasive treatment utilising wavelengths of red, yellow and near infra-red light to rejuvenate the deeper macular pigmentary cells in a process call photobiomodulation. The management of dry AMD with LumiThera’s Valeda is all around promoting retinal stability and the subsequent tracking with the in-depth retinal scanners that have been a mainstay in our practices for many years. The addition of this treatment to our practices builds on our philosophy of

taking a proactive approach to eye health. Regular eye examinations are imperative for everyone, but especially for those over the age of 60 due to increasing prevalence of age-induced eye damage such as macular degeneration. It is also important that your eye exam allows your optometrist to see and digitally record the deep retinal layers specifically in and around the macula. the-eye-place.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

JOINT E F F O R T

Invest in your joint health with the world’s most scientifically studied turmeric formulation Turmeric+ Gold

F

or people with physically active careers – from firefighters to chiropractors, plumbers to musicians – being agile is just part of the job. But after years of the daily grind, joint discomfort can make it feel harder to stay on top of things. It doesn’t have to stay that way, and many people are now looking to turmeric supplements to help. The key active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. The potential health benefits of this extraordinary plant are being analysed more than ever before, with 2,000 scientific papers and 61 clinical trial published win 2023 alone. Scientists now want to understand curcumin’s effects across a huge range of human health areas, from bone and joint health to metabolism, liver and, kidneys, vision, and even digestive health. It’s a good idea to choose a turmeric formulation that’s been validated by publications in peerreviewed scientific journals, as well as showing its effectiveness in human studies. Turmeric+ Gold contains the most scientifically studied curcumin formulation in the world. It’s also officially certified by Informed Sport, the certification programme used by professional athletes. Developed by FutureYou Cambridge, a UK food supplement company that works closely with leading scientific institutions and researchers in nutrition and health, Turmeric+ Gold uses a patented phytosome technology called Curcuma Phospholipid Complex to make curcumin easier for our bodies to absorb. Made with sustainably sourced natural ingredients, Turmeric+ Gold contains vegan-friendly and allergen-free sunflower lecithin, with extra vitamin C to support collagen formation for the function of cartilage, and vitamin D – key to maintaining bones and muscle function.

JAMES BOMPHREY

Try Turmeric+ Gold FOR FREE FutureYou Cambridge is offering people the chance to try Turmeric+ Gold for free, and discover the difference the most studied, scientifically researched curcumin formulation can make. 64-year-old James Bomphrey worked as a self-defence trainer for teachers and carers – but as he got older, physically intense activity felt much harder. ‘When you can’t do the things you used to do easily, it can really affect your mood,’ says James, who’s also a keen swimmer, skier and cyclist. After reading about Turmeric+ Gold, he decided to give it a try and he soon experienced a major improvement – and the effect wasn’t just physical. ‘After taking Turmeric+ Gold for five weeks, I suddenly realised I felt different,’ he says. ‘Taking this supplement has

really helped me lead the life I want to, and I highly recommend it.’ Dr Miriam Ferrer, PhD, FutureYou Cambridge’s Head of Product Development, explains the offer: ‘Turmeric+ Gold has helped tens of thousands of people stay on top of the physical demands of everyday life. We’re so confident in Turmeric+ Gold that we’re offering people the chance to try their first pack for free. Everyone is different, and in some instances it can take up to eight weeks for individuals to notice the benefits. FEELING INSPIRED TO MOVE MORE THIS YEAR?

“Look, if you don’t stay active, you get old very quickly. Whether you’re getting up a mountain or getting out of bed… the important thing is to keep going.” SIR IAN BOTHAM

H

aving undergone a complete knee replacement surgery in late 2022, Ian Botham dedicated the past year to his personal journey of recovery, rediscovering the profound value of physical and mental well-being through exercise. Inspired by this rediscovery, the sporting icon is now embarking on another mission to get the nation moving. Many of us know Ian Botham as the front-man of England’s greatest ever comeback, “the miracle of headingley" (1981), so he might just be the leader we need in this push to get our people to Move More. Whilst Beefy’s Charity Foundation continues to fundraise for the treatment of chronic and serious illnesses, Ian’s ‘Move More’ message is one of prevention before treatment. Not all trips to hospital are easily avoided, but this initiative is one of self-awareness, asking individuals to consider if they could be doing more to keep themselves healthy, then encouraging them to do exactly that. "When you were younger, you didn't have to think about exercise because you were exercising every day – out on the sports field and the playground. Nobody thought, 'Oh, I've got to do some exercise,' you just did it. As you get older, it gets a bit trickier to look after yourself, so you must be more disciplined." - Sir Ian Botham Dr Rob Galloway, A&E Doctor and honorary clinical professor, recently published an article

stating that “doing regular exercise is the single most important thing that anyone can do for their health and thus reduce demand on health care systems.” The same article details concerns about the UK healthcare system, which revolve around its current focus on treating acute illnesses at the expense of prevention, leading to unsustainable demand and potential harm to patients. In presenting movement as a solution to our healthcare crisis, Dr Galloway refers to exercise as “the wonder drug that every GP should be prescribing”, being that it’s zero cost, zero side-effects, and has a list of benefits longer than any pharmaceutical ever created. Considering the stress our NHS is currently under, Ian Botham's "Move More" initiative is an empowering reminder to help our healthcare by helping yourself.

THINKING OF JOINING THE MOVEMENT?

The NHS has created a useful tool to guide people who are looking to incorporate more movement into their routine: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/ Inline with his ambassadorship for leading wellbeing brands, EthicaCBD and Revitive, Sir Ian Botham has been sharing his physical recovery processes, hoping to inspire his followers to keep striving for better living no matter what it takes. For those of us with added challenges, Ian’s advice for staying active against the odds is rather succinct: "Get out there and have a crack. It's the only way to keep yourself mentally and physically strong."

We’ve got exactly what you need. EthicaCBD are giving away 1 year’s subscription to Move GB and 1 year’s supply of EthicaCBD Sports Gel, an allnatural pain and mobility gel designed to help you get active and stay active. With your Move GB subscription, you’ll be granted complete access to all the best local fitness venues, activities and instructors, all from one membership. It’s a comprehensive and complete opportunity to incorporate exercise into your routine and keep things interesting. All that exercise doesn’t come without a bit of soreness. January is the time where most people join the gym, but many of us don’t stick to it. Fortunately, thanks to your year’s supply of EthicaCBD, your muscles, joints, and tendons will be receiving the very best plant-based care available. If there is any product on the market that could help you make it through the January soreness and commit to a more healthy routine, the EthicaCBD Sports Gel is the one. Here’s how good their CBD Sports Gel is… in July 2022, Sir Ian Botham, hadn’t walked around a golf course in over 2 years. His son gifted him some of this natural gel, in an attempt to boost his mobility by reducing the pain and inflammation he’d long been suffering in his knees and hips. Long story short, it worked. 3 weeks later, he was walking around Sunningdale golf course and 3 months later he returned to competitive golfing at the Dunhill Links. When asked on the topic, Beefy said “Without the gel, I wouldn’t have made it around the Dunhill.” So, enter EthicaCBD’s competition for a chance to win everything you need to get active and stay active this year. Move more, with EthicaCBD.

AMECHI MANDI

How African tradition inspired Amechi Mandi to create a very contemporary look for the home Words P E A R L B OY D

A

mechi is a London-based design brand founded by Cameroonianborn product and furniture designer Amechi Mandi. Amechi is an Igbo name from south eastern Nigeria and means “who knows tomorrow” or “only God knows tomorrow”. Amechi Mandi is of Nigerian and Cameroonian heritage. As is the case with most creatives, Amechi was creative before he even knew what it was. Around the early ages of four and five in his hometown of Douala in Cameroon he can vividly remember how he would draw his mum in the best clothes and stop and stare in amazement at his flamboyantly fashionable neighbour. It was some years later that a drawing Amechi showed his mother led her to declare that he could be a fashion designer himself, and so the dream of following in the footsteps of famous fashion designers began. Fast forward a few decades, Mandi did not become a fashion designer, but would work in the industry for many years – stylist, buyer, founder of a fashion start-up, creative director at Voo Store Berlin. Eager to try something different, he left Berlin for London and went back to school for a degree in furniture and product design. After passing with flying

colours, Mandi spotted a gap in the market and set about launching an interiors brand inspired by his heritage. A brand with a huge exploratory focus on traditional African textiles and cultures indigenous to the continent. Cultures and practices which did not come into existence as a result of colonialism, but which evolved and were self-determined by the local people over centuries. The main idea behind Amechi is to explore indigenous African traditions, textiles and cultures and reimagine them with fresh, fun and exciting items that add character to any contemporary space. After feeling unsatisfied with the range of West African-inspired home décor currently on offer due to its heavily influenced colonial undertones, he decided to look into the region’s pre-colonial history and make that the focus of the brand identity. Amechi's first home collection, Kirdi, is inspired by modesty aprons traditionally worn by the Fali people of northern Cameroon and northern Nigeria. The aprons were woven in glass beads and came in beautiful geometric patterns and naïve flora and fauna motifs. Hand-drawn and digitally illustrated, the Kirdi scatter cushion designs intricately capture the authentic, ancient art of Kirdi bead working and reimagine this art form in bold, colourful and original prints presented in linen, Tencel and velvet. As a purpose-driven enterprise, Amechi supports the communities where their inspiration comes from. For the Kirdi collection, we are working with Hupjefi, a Douala, Cameroon-based social enterprise who support young women from struggling

“The idea is to explore indigenous African traditions, textiles and cultures and reimagine them” backgrounds escape the inevitable, like prostitution or from being easy targets to violence. In collaboration with Floor Story, Waves by Amechi Mandi for Floor_Story is a collection of rugs that take the shape of waved forms, recreating the tranquillity of peacefully crystal-clear lapping water but with a playful twist. The clean, undulating lines of each design are brought to life with vibrant sun filled shades of oranges, pinks and greens, harmoniously set against a backdrop of natural sandy tones. Moving away from the traditional rectangular rug outline, the collection sees overlapping abstract shapes creating beautifully decorative rugs to grace the floor or egually a perfect fit for the wall. amechihome.com

am on a mission to help you unlock the full potential of your home and embark on a journey to bring more calm and joy to your life. It’s interior design that goes far beyond aesthetics. We have all experienced that comforting embrace when stepping into a well-loved space, a sanctuary where the chaos of the world outside dissipates. But what is it about our homes that makes them so crucial to our wellbeing? Imagine walking into a neatly arranged living room after a hectic day—the calming effect is palpable. Such simple moments are profound reminders of the connection between our surroundings and our mental state. Creating a home that supports your wellbeing is not a one-size-fits-all scenario; it's deeply personal. However, certain principles are widely recognised to impact the relationship between our living spaces and our mental health. Take organisation, for example; a clutter-free environment can significantly reduce stress levels and contribute to a sense of order and control in our lives. Another often underestimated factor

Improve your home’s effect on your wellbeing with Jess Blake from Happybeams is the influence of scents on our emotional state. A home that smells inviting and soothing can have a huge impact on our mood and overall wellbeing. Aromatherapy has long been recognised for its therapeutic effects, and incorporating pleasant scents into our living spaces can create an atmosphere of calm and relaxation. As we delve into the intricate relationship between our homes and our wellbeing, it’s clear that small, intentional changes can make a big difference. The ability to create a haven of tranquility is within your grasp; it simply starts with recognising the potential that your living spaces have on your day to day life. With a degree in Psychology, teamed with an Interior Design Certificate and over 100 completed client projects, I created Happybeams & Co., an online community and bank of tools and resources, plus access to professional design advice, to empower you to improve your wellbeing, through simple, cost effective changes. As a Happybeams & Co. member, you gain access to our exclusive membership portal—a treasure trove of over 30 different resources tailored to guide you through

your interior projects. Whether you're just starting or looking to refine your existing space, our portal is your go-to source for expert advice, practical tips, and creative inspiration. From guides on decluttering and organising to tutorials on designing your dream kitchen, there really is something for whatever stage you’re at. In our private Facebook group, you'll find a network of individuals on similar journeys, ready to offer insights, share successes, and provide a comforting virtual shoulder during challenges. The sense of belonging and camaraderie within this community means your journey not only involves crafting a beautiful space but also building meaningful connections too. Our homes should be more than mere shelters; they should be places where memories are made, where we can be present with our loved ones, and where we can disconnect from the chaos of the outside world. Join Happybeams & Co. and start to create a home that rejuvenates, inspires, and ultimately enhances your overall sense of wellbeing. Transform your living space, transform your life. small easel and paintbrush on the table are a subtle clue to what’s in store. The brush is dipped in blue paint, and the table is set for dinner. This is the Picasso Experience, and we are about to eat a meal inspired by the artist’s favourite dishes, recreating recipes with ingredients from the Mediterranean that he remained drawn to throughout his life. We’re intrigued. What did Picasso eat? Half a century since his death, there has been a lot of focus on Picasso recently. A BBC documentary revealed his complex personal relationships and his – let’s say – challenging behaviour; his children have long

fought among themselves and struggled to manage the estate and legacy. With more than 10 museums around the world filled exclusively with his paintings, drawings and ceramics he is probably the 20th century’s most famous artist. And while we might associate him most with the south of France, Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, the sunny Andalusian city known by British tourists mostly as the gateway to the Costa del Sol. But all those visitors who land at Malaga and head straight for the coast are missing out. This is a beautiful city that’s been undergoing a bit of a renaissance over the past few years and has emerged as a significant cultural hub. Not only is Malaga home to more than 40 museums but it has a

remarkable cathedral, a Roman theatre and an 11th century Moorish fortress as well as great beaches, excellent restaurants and a buzzing nightlife. It’s an excellent weekend destination and would make a great base for a longer stay too. We’re staying at Anantara Villa Padierna Palace, along the coast from Malaga between Marbella and Estepona. It’s a sprawling, luxurious hotel that offers a Picasso Experience package as well as three 18-hole golf courses and an academy that attracts golfers from around the world. We’re here for Picasso, and after a smooth flight and a short ride from the airport, we’re ready to discover what the artist liked to eat. But first there’s a tour of the place, which is improbably beautiful. The hotel is A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

known for its impressive art collection as well as its impossibly photogenic courtyard pool surrounded by lush palm trees. There are several private villas in addition to the main building (the one where Michelle Obama stayed has been named after her). As part of the Picasso package, dinner is set up for us privately in a romantic, secluded room. It starts with champagne and Picasso’s tastes prove to be very much focused on local fare. There’s a lovely chilled almond and garlic soup to start, followed by a simple bowl of clams in tomato sauce and a piece of grilled tuna with onions. Picasso was said to love the local Vino Dulce, and a glass of that accompanies an excellent honey cake dessert.

The meal sets us up for the following day’s itinerary. We head into Malaga to meet our lovely guide, Maria, who starts by showing us the cathedral, constructed over almost 300 years from 1528 on the site of a former mosque, but left with one unfinished tower. Inside it’s vast and ornate, though damage from the Civil War remains apparent. Nearby is another church where Picasso was baptised. Next stop is the Picasso Museum, opened in 2003 and founded by Christine Ruiz-Picasso, widow of the artist’s eldest son Paulo Ruiz-Picasso, with their son (Picasso’s grandson) Bernard. As early as the 1950s, Picasso had expressed a desire to have a home for his work in Malaga, and this wish was realised with the opening of the

“The hotel is known for its impossibly photogenic courtyard pool” museum, housed in an elegant 16th century palace that blends the region’s Castilian, Italian and Moorish influences. It’s a small collection, including works inspired by the Civil War and Picasso’s Minotaur, as well as early works featuring his first wife and their son, beautifully displayed. Nearby is the house where Picasso was born and spent his early years, and this is another museum. We take pictures of ourselves sitting with a bronze statue of Picasso on a bench outside his house before heading to dinner at buzzing El Pimpi, a restaurant that’s partowned by local resident Antonio Banderas and decorated with bullfighting posters and wine barrels. Here we feast on cured meats, grilled squid, fried anchovies and croquettes in a busy and fun space, finishing with more of the delicious sweet wine. We also fit in some meals at the hotel, where La Loggia restaurant has beautiful views from the terrace and serves a single whole tomato as an amuse bouche, with a serrated knife and a side of salt, plus excellent local olive oil and vinegar. For a tomato lover like me it’s almost the perfect meal. Also excellent is the gazpacho and the grilled fish, while the poolside eaterie serves up poke bowls and burgers. Have I mentioned the spa? It’s lavish and luxe, and our weekend visit fits in a dreamy massage too. anantara.com

he afternoon we fly into Faro, there’s a very light mist of rain. It seems we’ve brought it with us from London, and everyone from the airport staff to our taxi driver is up in arms about it. The Algarve is famed for having 300 days of sunshine every year. Thankfully, the uncharacteristic rain spell doesn’t last long, and by the time we’ve arrived at The Magnolia Hotel in Almancil, the clouds are a distant memory. With its Palm Springs-inspired decor, The Magnolia is the perfect escape from dreary London. Think bohemian wicker chairs, colourful tufted berber rugs, and neon signage. I could quite happily lounge by the pool all day with a cocktail in hand, but that’s unlikely to be on the cards as we’re holidaying with our toddler. The Magnolia is, in fact, a great destination for families. The boutique hotel has 74 rooms, and seven cabin-style cottages. We’re staying in one of the cottages, located in a peaceful area of the hotel’s grounds. Our cute little cabin is super spacious inside, with a kitchen / living room area, two bedrooms, and a bathroom with an all-important bathtub. The hotel has set up a travel cot in the second bedroom, and we feel like we’ve got the ideal home-from-home for the next few days. The Magnolia has the benefit of being on the edge of Quinta do Lago, with access to the resort’s many facilities. Known for its award-winning golf courses, it’s also become a wellness destination thanks to ‘The Campus’, a A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

stylish sports complex, which opened in 2018. World-class athletes and professional sports teams travel from all over the world to train here and with the extensive facilities and feel of a private member’s club, it’s easy to see why. During the summer months, the resort has a variety of programmes to keep children entertained – from dance, to tennis, and soccer camps. My two-year-old however, is more than happy to play in the playground with my husband whilst I take a restorative Yin Yoga class and sneak off to the spa. We have lunch at Dano’s, the sports bar at The Campus. The food is great, with plenty of plant-based options for me and a crowd-pleasing kid’s menu. As we enjoy our meal, we notice that there’s lots of young families holidaying with the grandparents. Quinta do Lago is perfect for an intergenerational holiday – with

an activity to please literally everyone. Later, it’s back to The Magnolia for an afternoon of swimming. During our stay, one of the best things about being able to access the Quinta do Lago resort is the variety of restaurants on offer. We had a buffet-style continental breakfast every day at The Magnolia, but ventured out of the hotel for lunch and dinner. The resort is set in 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park, so you need a car to get around. We didn’t hire one, but it was no problem for the hotel to arrange private transfers for us. We ate at Casa do Lago, an elegant fresh fish restaurant with stunning views of the lake; UMAMI, which is said to be the most refined Asian gastronomic experience in the Algarve; and Casa Velha – Quinta do Lago’s newly refurbished Portuguese restaurant.

The food was incredible at all of the restaurants, and I was especially impressed with the plant-based options at Casa Velha. With creative flavour combinations, each dish was an absolute treat. The service was also impeccable. Quinta do Lago does offer professional babysitting services, but we chose to bring our daughter with us in the evenings. The staff were amazing with her, and when she had a bit of an overtired meltdown one evening, it was no problem to box up the rest of our meal and order a car to whisk us straight home. It’s this attention to detail and easygoing atmosphere that makes holidaying at Quinta do Lago so great for young families. Parents will love the stylish decor and world-class restaurants, and the whole family can enjoy an active getaway with the range of activities on offer. And sunshine is (pretty much) guaranteed too. LUXE A wellness weekend with a winery attached? Why not? Absolutely visits L’Albereta in northern Italy By PENDLE HARTE

A

re we here for the spa, or for the wine? L’Albereta is a romantic retreat north of Milan that has a dual focus: there’s wellbeing, with a Chenot Spa hosting a variety of punishing, resultsfocused retreats, while there’s also a focus on lavish dining, excellent pizza and lots of local wine. Most guests belong in one camp or the other, but it’s an intimate place and very possible to sample both. From Milan it’s about an hour’s drive to Lake Iseo, a lesser-known sibling to Como and Garda, but no less beautiful. L’Albereta is an ivy-covered 19th century villa set in lush countryside in the wine region of Franciacorta, and it’s a stylish retreat with lake and mountain views, individually designed rooms and a friendly vibe. We’re here for the weekend of the familyrun hotel’s 30th anniversary and there’s a celebratory feel; the fact that the family owns the neighbouring vineyard, Bellavista, adds a shine to the place. Everyone seems ready to be popping corks. Because here we are in the heart of Franciacorta, where the combination of a microclimate and the region’s particular soil creates an environment that’s particularly conducive to the white grapes that create this

Italian sparkling wine. Don’t mention Prosecco – that mass-produced soapy fizz is a world away from Franciacorta, which is strictly methode champenoise: two fermentations, the second in the bottle and many months of ageing during which the bottles are rotated manually at regular intervals to expel all sediment. Just as the 17th century French monks devised it. This area has produced wine for hundreds of years but it wasn’t until the 1960s that local wine pioneer Franco Ziliani wondered whether it might be worth trying to create a rival to Champagne. And thanks to fortuitous geographical conditions, his region’s grapes transpired to be perfectly suited to what could otherwise have been a failed experiment – and the result is a relatively new tradition of fantastic sparkling wines. Sampling Franciacorta’s many varieties of fizz entertains us for an afternoon after touring the impressive winery. Bottles are rarely exported, since production is so limited, but they’re highly regarded throughout Italy. But not only are we at the epicentre of some of Italy’s best wine, we are also in the presence of Italy’s greatest pizza chef, and therefore probably the world’s. With his main base just outside Naples, Franco Pepe has a restaurant at L’Albereta and happens

“Not only are we at the epicentre of some of Italy’s best vineyards, we are also in the presence of Italy’s greatest pizza chef” to be here in person. This is a man who has travelled to the Middle East with pizza dough in his luggage (because really, the water needs to be Neapolitan) and been subject of a Netflix documentary about the world’s best pizza. His signature is a deconstructed margarita where the tomato sauce, radically, is added cold. It is undeniably delicious, as is the unlikely-sounding fried pizza, which has a brilliant, doughnuty crispiness. We visit the kitchen, but there’s an air of secrecy. It’s all about the dough, special flour and special water, is all he’ll reveal. People who aren’t here for pizza and wine are here for the spa. The Chenot Method dates back to 1970, when it was founded in Switzerland as a means of slowing down the aging process. According to Chenot, we have the potential to be fully active at 120 years old, as long as we abide by certain principles (including mostly abstaining from pizza and wine). Programmes range from a few days to a week or two, where you can shuffle between treatments and meals in your robe and emerge as a better version of yourself. It’s possible to sample the detox menus without signing up for the full experience, (they are delicious) but anyone not on a strict improving regime will probably prefer the main restaurant, verlooking the lake, with its high class regional specialities and excellent pasta, and of course, Franciacorta wines. Beautiful Iseo is home to Europe’s biggest lake island, as well as several smaller islands. (George Clooney is trying to buy one of them, we’re told; there’s always a George Clooney story in the Italian lakes). The lake

is also home to boat manufacturer Riva, and Bellini Nautica offers lake tours in vintage 1970s Aquarama speedboats, all polished teak, turquoise leather and James Bond style. This is without a doubt one of the most glamorous things we’ve ever done. Cruising the lake at speed, the wind in my hair, and returning to more excellent food and wine, is definitely my idea of a fabulous weekend. L’Albereta, Franciacorta, offers double rooms from €360 per night based on two sharing on a B&B basis albereta.it

est Wittering beach has been a family favourite for generations. Soft golden sands, a balmy microclimate and ideal conditions for watersports put it firmly on the map of Great Britain’s best beaches. It’s not just the beach though that has those in the know returning year after year. Picture chocolate-box countryside dotted with historic towns and villages; a wine region renowned for its exquisite sparkling, often compared to the finest Champagne; rolling hills, endless hiking trails and breathtaking views; and culture in abundance. This idyllic region is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

BEACH DAYS The crown jewel is six and a half miles of beach to explore. Stretching from the National Trust’s East Head, a haven for bird watchers

and dog walkers; through the powder soft sands of West Wittering where families picnic and play beach cricket; and down to the shingle beaches of East Wittering and Bracklesham Bay where kids boogie board in the shallow surf at low tide, and adrenaline seeking kite and wind surfers power through the waves whatever the weather.

West Sussex is steeped in history and culture, providing endless opportunities for family-friendly outings. Adventure through Britain’s naval past at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard; delight in some jousting at an Arundel Castle medieval festival; battle with the Gladiators at Fishbourne Roman Palace; journey through time at the Weald & Downland Living Museum; be awe-inspired by the architecture of Chichester Cathedral or enjoy some drama at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

GASTRONOMIC DELIGHTS Sussex boasts over 50 vineyards, more than any other region in the UK. Each offer visitors a unique experience from wine tasting and fine dining to vineyard tours and learning experiences. The topography, which rivals the champagne producing regions of France combined with the climate, creates perfect growing conditions, hence the huge number of quality vineyards to explore. If you love food with your wine the area boasts a wealth of fabulous pubs and restaurants, serving quality local produce.

This means that QE College retains the title of The Sunday Times Top School in the North for Academic Performance for a third consecutive year along with its position as the top school in York for academic results, with QE Faculty also flying high and cementing its place as the premier northern independent school for students wishing to pursue a personalised curriculum to the highest possible standards. Queen Ethelburga’s College is named a Times Top 20 School for academic results achievements in both our senior schools. Offering the choice of provision in QE Faculty and QE College provides students with the chance to excel in whichever route suits them best, and the results speak for themselves after nearly 20 years since QE Faculty was established. To be placed as the top two schools in York for academic performance at A-level is incredible and shows a dedication to excellence by both students and staff.” Head of QE College, Steven Turner, adds: “We are absolutely delighted that the College has been recognised as the Independent Secondary School of the Year in the North for Academic Performance for the third consecutive year. This prestigious award is a testament to the incredible hard work of our diverse and ambitious students, the dedication of our talented staff, and the support of our parent community. Within the College we foster a culture of academic excellence whilst promoting happiness, positive health and an enriching all round student experience.

This accolade reflects our commitment to shaping future leaders and building the skills required for lifelong learning.” Head of QE Faculty, Lauren Blakeley, comments: “I am very proud of what our students have achieved. To be placed seventh in the North of England for overall academic performance is a remarkable accomplishment. We see the talent and ability of our students every day, but it is fantastic to see their efforts reflected in this accolade. In QE Faculty, we are lucky to have the flexibility to shape each students’ curriculum around their learning styles, interests and aspirations and I believe this has led to these fantastic results because often the most successful students are the happiest ones.” To find out more, visit qe.org or attend an Open Morning on 27 January or 9 March 2024. PUPILS WITH THERAPY DOG KANGA

LIFE

At Francis Holland School, therapy dog Kanga is a reassuring confidant for pupils of all ages

A

By LIBBY NORMAN

t Francis Holland School in Sloane Square, life is made happier by Kanga, a trained therapy dog who belongs to the school's Lead Counsellor Zoe. She has been at FHS for four years, having begun her training as a pet therapist when she was just eight weeks old. She is considered a key member of the team at ContemPlace, the school's counselling service, working alongside five specialist therapists within the Wellbeing Suite. Students and staff can visit her during the school day for a chat, a pat or to tell her their worries. Vizslas are renowned for their affectionate nature and loving temperament, says Zoe, and have earned the nickname 'velcro dogs' for their loyalty to their human companion. But Kanga is happy to spread her affection wider and many girls will come to lie down next to her for a few minutes to boost their mood. Zoe notes that stroking an animal

KANGA

helps create a sense of calm – particularly useful for any student who is feeling anxious or has neurosensory needs. This helps girls 'reset' their emotional state and the rest of their day becomes much more manageable. At the beginning of the academic year, Kanga helps pupils starting at FHS to settle in and find their feet. She's on hand for everyone from Reception children missing their parents to Year 7 girls feeling overwhelmed by the step up to secondary school. A side benefit is that many friendships are forged when children gather to meet the resident pet therapist.

Students and staff can visit her during the school day for a chat, a pat or to tell her their worries

During exam periods she is also on hand to save the day, helping to calm anyone finding the stress a bit overwhelming. One especially popular therapy service is 'walk and talk', where girls take a short stroll round the streets of Chelsea with Kanga and a counsellor – often that's all it takes to restore perspective and calm those pre-exam jitters. Staff say Kanga offers a good way for some students to explore the idea of counselling. They drop-in to see her and then find themselves opening up to one of the counsellors. They have realised that if you're stroking a dog you don't have to look the person you are talking to in the eye – making it much easier to broach difficult subjects. For all the children at FHS, Kanga is a reassuring confidant. "I love Kanga's ears – they're so soft and they listen to all the worries I tell them," says one." "Visiting Kanga is the highlight of my day. She is unfailingly calm and peaceful," adds another. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

of the political classes. This has left independent schools to go it alone in creating innovative curricula to broaden, deepen and interconnect the strands of their pupils’ learning. Bedales School, from its origins, was innovative, but KEW HOUSE SCHOOL PUPILS not alone in creating its own curriculum with Bedales Assessed Courses (BAC). More recently many other schools have attempted to create innovative, holistic diets for their pupils. These attempts have not been made, to avoid the glare of GCSE result performance, but to provide the best education for their pupils. At Kew House School, we have our own Gardener Award (GA) scheme. By mapping the content of the core curriculum, coalescing around five themes; enterprise, perspectives, wellbeing, community and creativity, our pupils gain a coherent insight into topics as they meet them across subjects – either simultaneously or as part of their spiral curriculum. They are still prepared for their subject GCSE exams, but gain a greater interrelation understanding of the issues. We are not content to rest there. We add curriculum time in the ‘GA’ strand to deliver statutory elements, but also teach skills and values in the context of the areas they are meeting in their core exemplified by the Education Commission curriculum. The concept has ancient roots in Greek pedagogy, was championed in the early 20th century by Jan Smuts in Holism and Evolution and carried forward by the writings of Abraham Maslow with the concept of ‘self-actualization’ in the latter part of the century. The idea of a broader, fuller, interconnected treatment of a young person’s educational pathway is a striking counterpoint to the linear, subject-silo, test-of-recall basis of the Victorian Education system that we in England are yearning to adapt, change or just throw away.
