Yorkshire YATTER

Forget the latest self-help gurus, writes Lisa Byrne, our county has all you need to head into 2024 feeling fine

W

hen I was young, practicing wellness would involve prancing around to a Cindy Crawford workout video, having a bone crunching Swedish massage and opting for a Guinness instead of beer (full of iron). But today, the quest to improve one’s personal health, through exercising the mind and body, has transformed into an all-consuming industry. Subscriptions to meditation apps have soared, we are ordered to always speak ‘our truth’ and if you’re rich enough, you can spend thousands on ‘finding yourself’ deep in a luxurious Himalayan retreat. I have become a bit of a wellness sceptic. The world is crowded with charismatic ‘gurus’ promising a life-transforming experience in return for a hefty fee, and often vulnerable people are more than willing to buy into the dream. But then a treatment so simple, straightforward, and utterly bonkers completely changed my mind – tapping. AKASHIC HEALING REVIEWS YOUR LIFE CYCLES

For years I have suffered from horrific night terrors involving a former boss. The dreams involve him screaming at me and hurling abuse in front of staff – a regular event when I worked for his company – and despite having copious counselling sessions the nightmares were escalating. After confiding about this to Yorkbased personal coach Denny Davis, she recommended seeing a therapist who practiced EFT (emotional freedom technique). Known as tapping, this treatment is based on a combination of ancient Chinese acupuncture and modern psychology – which is meant to decrease the stress hormone cortisol. Miraculously, after a couple of sessions with EFT practitioner Lucja Alves based in the cosy Carriage House in Bilbrough, the nightmares suddenly stopped. In fact, they have totally transformed. I still dream about my evil former boss, but he is now always utterly lovely and kind to me! Another treatment that is truly life changing is Akashic healing through Yorkshire’s famed expert Emel Duff, which focuses on reviewing your life cycles and lessons. The lovely Emel, who is one of the calmest and kindest people I’ve ever met, and who herself went through a very difficult life journey, examines finding your soul purpose and how you can upgrade your life and your relationships with family, relationships, and work. However, sometimes the best ways to feel better are the simplest. Nothing brings me greater pleasure than walking the dogs, reading a good book and switching off my pesky phone – after scrolling through hilarious videos on Instagram, obviously...

A WALK IN YORKSHIRE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD

My highlights for the month of January… Ditching the booze for Sentia GABA Spirits, which mimic the relaxing effects of alcohol without the hangover. Watching old 80s videos on YouTube in preparation for Gary Davies Sound of the 80s at York Barbican in February. Sipping ayurvedic organic Miracle Tea by Dimple Amani before bed. The best sleep-inducing invention ever! Hibernating under plush faux rabbit fur blanket by Vista Modern Living.

A new sculpture from Yinka Shonibare is revealed as part of LEEDS 2023

‘Hibiscus Rising’, a striking new 9.5m tall sculpture by international artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, has been unveiled in Leeds. As originally covered in Absolutely Yorkshire two months ago, it is a major part of the programme for LEEDS 2023, Year of Culture. ‘Hibiscus Rising’ is Shonibare’s first permanent public commission in the North of England. Forming a powerful legacy in celebration of the life of David Oluwale, ‘Hibiscus Rising’ also acts as a symbol of unity and hope, and shows how far Leeds as a unified, inclusive city has moved from a less tolerant past. Taste of

Success After winning the 2022 intake of The Apprentice, Leedsbased Harpreet Kaur is looking forward to building on her success in 2024 and flying the flag for start-ups in Yorkshire By BETHAN ANDREWS

Y

ou’re probably thinking that it’s simply a given that someone capable of winning the infamously tough TV series, The Apprentice, would be overflowing with ambition, drive, and headstrong determination. But what sets the 2022 Leedsbased winner Harpreet Kaur apart is the sense of balance and normality she exudes, too. Yes, she’s incredibly driven, but she also comes across as humble, down to earth, and grateful for her roots. She’s certainly not someone who has been swept up by the cameras or is chasing a reality TV star’s dream. As we sit down to chat, I wonder perhaps it was this that was the secret to her success? “The first couple of weeks on The Apprentice were really nerve wracking because I kind of forgot it was a TV show and millions of people would be watching. I was quite naive to that, really!” she laughs.

18

“As I got further into the process, I realised I’m good at what I do, managing people, so I leant into that and didn’t worry about the cameras or proving myself. I focused on winning the tasks as I believe that’s what’s important in business and life – not to keep validating yourself, but to get the goal and keep your eye on the prize. I approached it as I would dayto-day in my business. In fact, I was laughing watching it back because I just thought, ‘Harps, you really did forget that millions of people were watching!’ I’m grateful for the opportunities that come from the show, but I definitely forgot about that in the moment and I think that’s what helped me get to the end.” So, before the whirlwind of winning Lord Sugar’s acclaimed business partnership, where did it all start? “I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do, so started going to uni in Leeds studying in marketing before getting a job in Barclays in Huddersfield,” she says. “I carried on full-time in banking for Barclays and HSBC while studying for my degree from

home. I became a bank manager for HSBC at the age of 22, but at the age of 24, I just thought that there must be something else.” Harpreet tells me how the intention was to do a bit of a side hustle, but after setting up a dessert kiosk with her sister in the White Rose shopping centre, she left her career in banking to give it a real go. “It was a big shift going from working in a corporate office to selling ice cream, and I should have probably done a lot more research,” she laughs. “My sister and I had big goals, though – we wanted to open three stores within the first three years, and it’s exactly what we did. Covid hit and our shopping centre locations closed, so everything rode on our Huddersfield store. We smashed it, though, and increased our sales by 50% by diversifying into deliveries and staying open every single day.” Despite admitting to being very naive to the business world, it seems that entrepreneurial spirit has been deeply ingrained in Harpreet from a young age.

CULTURE • INTERVIEW

“I’ve always been hard working, and I just always wanted to prove myself,” she says. “I think I get the work ethic from my dad, though, working two jobs at a time and then buying an off-licence and growing it from the ground up. He unfortunately passed away six months ago and, reflecting on that, I’ve realised how similar I am to him. He was always working, and he enjoyed knuckling down and providing a better life for us.” As Harpreet tells me about her love for running a business with her sister, it’s lovely to hear of how much of an inspiration her late father was to her. “My dad was from India and came over to marry my mum, so he came to the UK hardly speaking any English, not really knowing anyone, but he was so clever and must have had in his head that he just had to keep building,” she tells me. “It’s so inspiring to see someone come such a long way.”

20

“I am a hard worker and wanted to prove myself” But where did The Apprentice come into this? “I saw the advert just after the pandemic, and my sister just told me to go for it. I’ve grown up watching the show and I’ve always had the itch to do it and have a go at the challenges,” she says. “I learnt how much I didn’t know. It was amazing to spend time with people from other backgrounds and learn how I can improve myself as a person, too.” But her modesty doesn’t mean that she ever doubted herself. Did she ever envisage winning? “Truthfully? Yes, I did,” she smiles. “I’m a real believer in positive thinking and influencing your actions and outcomes. I just believe that if someone else can, then so can I!” Since the show, Harpreet and her sister’s dessert parlour business rebranded to Oh So Yum, they’ve set up an e-commerce site, opened a new store in Bradford, and developed more products that Selfridges and one of the Hilton hotels in London now stock. It’s been quite a few years, and it looks set to be an exciting 2024, too. Not only did she win the coveted first place, but she also fell in love with her fellow competitor, Akshay Thakrar, and they are set to marry later in the year. “I’m very busy wedding planning at the moment, which is very fun,” she smiles. “But I’m most looking forward to my honeymoon, getting the hell out of here and switching off!” Also unsurprising is how much Harpreet is looking forward to hunkering down at

home for a bit, too. Having moved around West Yorkshire for pretty much her whole life, from Huddersfield, Brighouse and Leeds, Harpreet is fiercely fond of the county. Now based just outside of Leeds, she loves how much the city has to offer, how much it supports entrepreneurial spirit, but also lets her escape the hustle and bustle. “Leeds gives you enough, but not too much,” she muses. “I absolutely love Yorkshire. Everyone is so supportive, there’s a real community feel and people want you to do well here. You can really feel that and you feel as though you’re doing your community proud. There’s definitely been a rise in side businesses in Yorkshire, too, which is exciting to see.” When it comes to the business world, what is she most looking forward to in the new year? “I’m hoping to start business mentoring, which I’m really excited about, so I’ll be offering a range of packages for business owners and women to build their confidence,” she tells me. “We’ve also got some secret announcements coming for Oh So Yum so I’m sure it will be another whirlwind of a year!” ohsoyum.co.uk

Pocklington Absolutely Yorkshire delves into the heart of this warm and welcoming town B y H O L LY P H I L L I P S

N

estled at the base of the Yorkshire Wolds is where the quaint town of Pocklington unfolds. The traditional market town, home to 8,000 residents, bears a welcoming and friendly feel. It’s an elegant area, with a boatload of history, boasting excellent dining options, scenic natural surroundings, and a vibrant sense of community. The community atmosphere is unparalleled, with regular events like pub walks and historical strolls taking place. Samantha Tanfield, a resident of Pocklington and business owner, praised the community feel of the town: “Dog walkers are always saying hello to each other and it’s just a really nice friendly place to be.” With an impressive history, Pocklington isn’t shy of celebrating where it came from through an annual heritage festival. Situated in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the town has a recorded history that shows settlement of people dating back to as long as 2,500 years ago, surpassing York and even London. Despite its modest size, Pocklington has been witness to significant historical events, including the plague, invasions and marginalisation under the Romans. It’s a town that takes immense pride in all that it’s become, reflecting the resilience and positivity that define the personality of Pocklington.

WHO IS MAJOR PERCY STEWART?

When visiting Pocklington, it’s likely that you’ll encounter the name Percy fairly frequently, whether adorning a pub, a museum, or a street. Major Percy Stewart (1871-1962) was an extraordinary explorer and collector. He had rather prestigious relations,

22

with his godfather being second-cousin to Winston Churchill and his father-in-law being a very wealthy coal-mine owner. Percy went to Pocklington School before he purchased Burnby Hall (which used to be known as Ivy Hall) in 1904 with his wife. He embarked on eight world tours, visiting each continent with his wife, collecting many keepsakes from every one of his ventures. However, his world tours were interrupted by the Great War, in which he served and obtained the title of Major. After an adventurous lifestyle, in 1926 Major Stewart settled down in Pocklington for good, where he spent time developing the beautiful gardens around the hall that you can still see today. His once adventurous lifestyle turned into a reserved, but incredibly lavish one. Despite his high status, Major Stewart never failed to give back to the community. At his annual Christmas lunches, he’d invite all classes of community, and he was a regular contributor to many local organisations and charities. The locality and the idea that every person is equal really translates into today’s version of Pocklington.

THE JEWEL OF POCKLINGTON

Burnby Hall Gardens is the true jewel of Pocklington. It was left in trust for the people of the town and is now a charity. The gardens also boast the largest collection of Hardy Water Lilies in a natural setting throughout the whole of Europe – a botanical masterpiece inspired by Major Stewart’s wife. The lovely Hardy Water Lilies grace the gardens with their blooms in the summer, making the gardens particularly special to visit in July or August. Nevertheless, even in the winter months, the gardens maintain their allure, especially when frost adorns the

POCKLINGTON CANAL

ground on the crisp winter mornings. In addition to the Lilypad Cafe at Burnby Hall Gardens, renowned for its great selection of sandwiches and sweet treats, you’ll find the Stewart Museum, which showcases artefacts amassed by Major Stewart himself. The gardens also host a number of events, including an annual Tulip Festival, Sunday brass band concerts and many children’s events. Being winners of the Yorkshire Bloom Gold Award for Country Houses an incredible seven times in a row, it’s definitely worth a visit.

FAMOUS FACES

Many famous faces were born, or have lived, in the tiny town of Pocklington. Known for his rough Yorkshire accent, Ralph Ineson, an actor and comedian who has starred in The Office and Game of Thrones, is from Pocklington. One of Britain’s greatest living playwrights, Sir Tom Stoppard, OM, CBE, was educated in Pocklington. Well-known sports

players – such as Rob Webber, England rugby player, and Michael Woods, the fourth ever youngest player for Chelsea – also grew up in the market town.

GETTING ARTY

Theresa Brindley, a resident of Pocklington for eight years, expressed her fondness of the versatility of the town. “There’s lots of good shops, theatre shows and comedy shows, they get some big names for a small town,” she says. Her favourite place is the arts centre: “It’s a really valuable resource and brings people to the town as well.” The non-profit arts and entertainment venue offers everything you could ever want, attracting world-class talent to the intimate setting. Since opening in 2000, the venue has been operated by volunteers and has played host to community cafes and Singing for Fun sessions, community choir gatherings and youth theatre activities – a genuine testament to its commitment to fostering a strong sense of community.

Pocklington is also renowned for its sporting culture, a passion that Major Stewart himself shared. Nestled at the heart of Pocklington, Kilnwick Percy Golf Club stands as a hidden gem, surrounded by the picturesque Yorkshire Wolds, spanning 120 acres of parkland. The club embraces a contemporary and laid-back approach to golf, offering a great

Pocklington also has a thriving rugby union club, which has a host of men’s and women’s teams of all ages. The spirited chant of “take me home, Percy Road” is often heard. Interestingly, Major Percy Stewart was once President of Pocklington Rugby Club from 1904 until 1922. Many give credit to Major Stewart for the town’s love of sport, as several sporting clubs are based in his former estate, like the cricket club, the bowling club, and the swimming pool.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED ON YOUR DOORSTEP

said: “You’ve got everything you need on your doorstep. You don’t have to go far.” The ex-veterinary nurse recommended Stamfords Bar and Grill, a welcoming pub with a stylish interior and exceptional food, especially noteworthy for its Sunday lunches. Another recommendation is The Market Tap, the first venue in the chain that’s located outside of York’s city walls. For those looking for a unique dining experience, Beach House brings a taste of the Caribbean to Pocklington, complete with an interior that captures the island vibes. The tiki bar is a refreshing and flavoursome addition to the town, where the staff go above and beyond. Theresa Brindley, owner of a zero waste shop, I Love Zero, shared that her business enjoys a positive relationship with the coffee shop across the road, The Whisk. The trendy coffee shop is renowned for its excellent coffee and serves great brunch and breakfast options. Theresa expresses her affection for the independent shops in Pocklington, emphasising the sense of community and the importance of supporting local businesses, especially after Covid. Theresa, along with her husband, started their business during the first lockdown, as their environmental concerns grew. Turning their ideas into a reality, they commit to making a positive contribution to the environment, with the support of the rest of the town. Theresa notes the community’s strong, supportive ethos, saying: “Everyone’s very into supporting each other and supporting locally… We look out for each other.” Easily accessible, steeped in history, brimming with character, adorned with beauty, and offering a warm, friendly and homely atmosphere – what more could you want? “I'M WORKING VERY HARD ON BEING LESS PESSIMISTIC”

JO BRAND WILL APPEAR AT JON'S SPECIAL GIG FOR HAVEN HOUSE

JON SUPPORTING HAVEN HOUSE

Jon Richardson on his love for Leeds, a funnier wife, comic friends and why he supports Haven House Children’s Hospice Q When did you first come across the work of Haven House? A It was back in 2019 when I saw a Tweet that one of the hospice’s retail stores had been broken into. I reached out to Haven House to offer my support and to see if I could help get the store back on its feet. Since then, I’ve gone on to support the hospice with comedy nights and been a hospice ambassador at the annual BGC Charity Trading Day. Q Why were you keen to support them? A I am always keen to support any hospice. I

think there is a misconception that they are sad places that only deal with end-oflife care, but they are life giving essentials for many children, young people and adults with life limiting conditions. I met a young lady called Annabelle at an event who was being supported by the Haven House team and loved her immediately. She made me want to redouble my efforts to help raise some money so that the staff there can do their incredible work.

Q What can we expect at your gig on 1 February, which will raise money for Haven House? A Jokes! A night that will make you feel better in a world that sometimes seems difficult to bear. I’ll leave it to the big tele events to mix the funny bits with sad videos and appeals for more money – we’ll just be doing loads and loads of funny stuff. I believe these nights always work best when they are straight-forward. Once the audience are in the room then they have done the hard work, the money is in the pot, so they will be rewarded with as many laughs as we can give them in the two hours we’re together.

Q Who are your ‘friends’ due to appear on the night? A Good use of inverted commas! I’ve been asked by their lawyers to make clear that they are not all my friends, and they are not obliged to socialise with me before or after the event. It’s a phenomenal lineup with Josh Widdecombe, Jo Brand, Fatiha El-Ghorri, Joel Dommett and Lindsay Santoro. I might pull out another surprise on the night – who knows? Q Does the gig feel different when you are raising money for charity? A It’s different because the atmosphere in the room is always better when, as well as having fun, you are doing it for a good cause. There will be staff and families from the hospice there on the night, which makes it even more special. Q I saw you on stage earlier in 2023 and you were brilliant. Can you sum up the feeling you get when you are on stage? A Thank you for coming! I’m aware that I’m supposed to say I only really feel at home on stage and once I’m performing I relax and try to have a good time, but the truth is I get incredibly stressed, hyper focused on stage and spend the whole time worrying that I’ll forget something or let people down. If it has gone well I enjoy it afterwards with a whisky in the hotel, but only once the audience are happy and home safely! Q Is every gig different? A Absolutely! It’s what makes the job so

addictive. Every gig is a unique result of the make-up of the audience, the room the gig is in, the time of year, the news stories AABBSSOOLLUUTTEELY LY m maaggaazziinneess

happening at that time, the weather and so many other things, not to mention your own mood and energy levels. It could send you mad if you thought about it too much. Q We like to think we know you now thanks to Meet the Richardsons – how much of that is scripted and how many elements would you say are true to life? A Even the scripted elements have their base in real events, so it’s impossible to say really. I don’t expect audiences to work out what’s real and what isn’t given that sometimes Lucy will swear blind she has discussed something with me when in reality all she’s done is sit in her office and write a scene in which we have a conversation about it. It’s best to let it all wash over you, but just understand the constant stress I live under and be nice to me if you see me in the street! Q My wife says I am a lot like you with my general outlook on life – which is a slightly miserable one… Is that really you? A I’m working very hard on being less pessimistic, but yes it’s all me. Part of me thinks you’d have to be insane not to be

JON WITH WITH THE INSPIRATIONAL ANNABELLE

miserable in a world like the one we live in, but I’ve worked out over the years that optimism is an effort some people make rather than a deluded state they were born into. Since having my daughter, I am really trying to believe the best of the world I have brought her into. Q What’s the best thing about making TV shows with Lucy? A The money! Failing that the number of couples who come up to us when we’re out and proudly tell us which of them is me and which is Lucy. We made a decision when we started making the show never to show a saccharine version of our marriage where everything is happy and we always get on. Maybe we’ve gone too far the other way, but the tension is always where the humour lies and I’m glad Lucy and I agree on that if nothing else! Q What do you love best about living in Yorkshire? A Obviously Yorkshire has some stunning coastlines, the Dales and many, many beautiful towns, but I would be lying if I

didn’t say that proximity to Elland Road is what I love most about living in Yorkshire. Q Are there many great comedy venues? A Anywhere in the UK you are never far

from some fantastic comedy nights, we are so incredibly lucky. Leeds Grand, York Barbican, Harrogate Theatre, Halifax Victoria and the Bradford Alhambra are some of my favourite touring venues. I had the pleasure of playing the Leadmill in Sheffield for the first time this year, which was far cooler than I deserve, and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t been to the Georgian Theatre in Richmond before either. What a stunning place. I could go on and on...

Q Are you happy with how Leeds

are doing so far this season?

A Very happy. I started supporting Leeds

in the mid 90s and I’d suffer all the low points for the [Marcelo] Bielsa years, so the ups and downs are all part the fun.

ATTENDS MALTON’S CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

C

hristmas came early to Yorkshire’s ‘Food Capital’ over the weekend of 2-3 December, as the Malton Christmas Festival returned, with bells on. Over 20,000 people gathered in the charming town centre for Visit Malton’s annual two-day shopping extravaganza. This year, for the first time ever, a new ‘market hall’ marquee took over the east side of Market Place and provided shelter from the very wintry elements outside – and just in time, as the snow fell over Malton on Friday night, turning the town into the ultimate winter wonderland. Shoppers were treated to over 100 stalls including a fantastic selection of local food and drink producers. There was also a wide range of non-food gifts, meaning shoppers were offered an unsurpassed choice of festive presents to treat their loved ones this year. Christmas classics and traditional music filled the streets all weekend long, courtesy of Malton’s local brass bands and choirs. The Be Amazing Arts team were also on hand in The Creativitent, with children’s activities ranging from performing arts sessions, festive craft making and face painting. Also new for this year, Emerald the Elf took to the stage with an interactive Santa show, complete with a Santa’s Grotto in the Milton Rooms. Of course, it simply wouldn’t have been a Malton Christmas Festival without copious amounts of food on offer. As well as the 100 plus stalls, Malton-based retailers and artisan producers put on a superb show, serving up everything you need for a perfect Christmas feast from warming mulled wines, figgy puddings, traditional turkey, goose, and award-winning macarons. Commenting on the Malton Christmas Festival 2023, Mark Brayshaw, Head of Visit Malton, said: “Well, Malton certainly turned into a real winter wonderland this weekend! We’d like to extend a huge thanks to all of the jolly stallholders, vendors, performers and organisers for putting on a brilliant Christmas Festival and spreading the festive cheer throughout the town. Of course, a big thank you to all our visitors from near and far who came to buy their Christmas presents with us – your support for local, Yorkshire produce means a lot to us all. The fantastic turnout also saw some Malton based retailers report record takings, showing how the town really comes together to benefit from events such as these. We look forward to seeing you all in the new year when our monthly markets return on Saturday 9 March.” A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

t Birdsall House, they offer a unique experience by booking only one wedding per weekend, allowing you to enjoy the venue not only on your big day, but also the night before. Sophia, her mother, and her seven bridesmaids arrived on Friday, immersing themselves in the local charm by dining at a nearby country pub before returning to the luxurious bedrooms at Birdsall House. Located just five miles from Malton, Yorkshire’s food capital, the wedding party had plenty of delicious dinner options. The House was adorned with exquisite floral arrangements prepared by Natasha Coustol Floral Designs, enhancing the beauty of the venue when Sophia and her loved ones woke up on the big day. Velvet May Venue Styling also contributed their incredible touch. Makeup artist, Amy George, and hair stylist, Emily Hawkes, arrived early to make sure everyone looked their best. The wedding party enjoyed a delightful breakfast of smoked salmon, eggs, croissants, and fruit in the intimate dining room of Birdsall House. There are several locations in which to say “I do” at Birdsall, including a ballroom, the ruins of a 12th century monastery, a temple overlooking a beautiful lake, and there’s even a church within the grounds. However, after a toast with champagne and a light lunch in the bridal suite, guests started to arrive, and Sophia and Charlie exchanged vows in the elegant dining room. Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed reception drinks amidst the enchanting 12th century ruins, capturing beautiful memories through wedding photographs. The sounds of High Row Music filled the air, and The Hog & Apple Food Co. served a delectable wedding breakfast. The evening was filled with dancing and laughter, with guests staying either in one of the recently renovated bedrooms within

the house itself or in nearby accommodation at Langton Hall. Charlie and Sophia truly made the most of the house and grounds, creating cherished memories. Birdsall House has a history with romance: it has been in the Willoughby family for over 300 years after Thomas Willoughby, seeking shelter from a snowstorm, followed a light he saw in the distance which led him to Birdsall House. The Sotheby’s gave Thomas shelter for the night and introduced him to Elizabeth, their daughter and only child; the pair fell in love, marrying the same year. S

ummer 2023 saw the opening of a new restaurant set in an iconic historical building in North Yorkshire: York Minster Refectory. Led by Michelin Star chef, Andrew Pern, of acclaimed The Star Inn The City and The Star Inn At Harome, York Minster Refectory serves dishes rooted in the best produce from Yorkshire, celebrating its abundant moors and coastline, whilst guests enjoy unparalleled views overlooking York Minster. This new opening is the latest in a string of exciting new spaces launching in this burgeoning foodie city, cementing its reputation as the food capital of the North. “The opportunity arose following the decision to refurbish the old Minster School for use as a hospitality venue,”

Andrew explains the location of his latest venture. “For me, the setting of a restaurant is a very important part of the ‘experience’. Historic landmark buildings bring a great deal of atmosphere to a restaurant setting and the Minster School is completely unrivalled. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to locate the Refectory here.” Steeped in history, the original York Minster site dates back to 627 AD, with the main building of the adjacent school built in 1833. Following a delicate refurbishment by GEM Construction, the Grade II listed building has been transformed into an elegant, welcoming dining space by awardwinning, Pickering-based firm, Rachel McLane Ltd. The interior is sympathetic to the building’s heritage. Neo-gothic design elements – including original large latticed windows, wooden corbels with carved faces

“The setting is a very important part of the experience” and considerable stone archways – are highlighted and brought up to date with relaxed furniture in dark oak tones and antique brushed brass. A private dining space seating up to 40 guests provides a stunning setting for a special meal, offering seasonal group menus served in a grand upper level room featuring a huge arched window overlooking the cathedral. And the menu? “My approach has always been to let the seasons write the menus using Yorkshire’s brilliant pantry of food supplied by an array of White Rose flag producers,” Andrew says. Each element – from meat, to vegetables, to herbs – is taken from the Vale of York’s high quality and varied pantry of food. Presenting new takes on old-fashioned British-style favourites and Anglicised French classics, the menu has been designed to be accessible for all. The all-day offering covers choices from the A La Carte menu, including Coronation Crab ‘Vol-au-vent’ with sultanas, flaked almonds and coriander; Steak Tartare with gherkin ketchup, A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Those choosing to stay for the full dining experience can expect starters including White Onion Velouté with Brew York cider, charred grelots, black garlic with apple & sultana brioche “whirl”; Slow Cooked Pig’s Cheeks with radish, pea & broad bean salad, smoked bacon croutons and Granny Smith apple; and the Refectory Cocktail of Atlantic prawns, spiced crab, crevette, mussels and clams, and avocado served with a warm tin loaf. Main courses, or the ‘Main Event’ as dictated on the menu, range from Chargrilled Loin of Yorkshire Venison with haunch and black pudding potato pressing, new season turnip and sauce “grand veneur”; “Bouillabaisse” of Roasted Stone Bass with Shetland mussels, crispy squid, king scallop, Whitby crab “rouille” toast and coastal pickings; Yorkshire Wolds Chicken Breast with Lyonnaise potatoes, spenwood shavings, torched gem and a sprinkling of pancetta; plus Wild Mushroom and Summer Truffle “Pithivier” with charred broccoli, walnut ketchup, pickled girolles and salted cracked hazelnuts. Desserts range from the traditional with a twist, to the inventive, with Granny’s Tipsy Peach and

40

Amaretto Trifle, “Bananas and Custard” using dark rum, muscovado sugar and cinder toffee, and the “Minster Mess”, with Yorkshire strawberries, meringue, hay and vanilla creme and elderflower. Are there any dishes that Andrew is particularly loving right now? “I still lean towards dishes that remind me of my North Yorkshire Moors roots,” he smiles, “which would force me to choose between the Pressed Yorkshire Moors Game Haslet and the Breast of Yorkshire Moors Pheasant with Blackberries. We also have a couple of North Sea fish options that I would struggle to decide which to choose, and I do have a passion for cheese! The Refectory has a good cheese course selection, one of which is accompanied by Parkin, a particular favourite of mine.”

The response to York Minster Refectory has been unanimously positive and is just the latest in a long line of high class restaurants to open in the city. “The York food scene has changed massively in the last decade, since we started at The Star Inn The City down by the River Ouse in Museum Gardens,” Andrew says. “Prior to that, the Blue Bicycle, Meltons and 19 Grape Lane were the places to go. There was no dining at the top of the city, where we are, nor much breakfast or lunchtime demand, whereas now these are two of the busiest shifts!” And how are things going at The Star Inns? “The original Star Inn in Harome was closed for a year due to a major fire and reopened almost a year ago after a partial rebuild and complete refurbishment. It has come back better than ever, in my opinion,” Andrew smiles. “Fortunately, a lot of our diners and the AA Inspectors, who gave us 3 stars, agree with me. I couldn’t be happier with it! The Star Inn The City has just marked its 10th anniversary and is also continuing to perform amazingly, having established its own place in the hearts of its loyal clientele.” With the York Minster Refectory thriving, that’s the perfect three courses of Andrew Pern’s cooking. yorkminsterrefectory.co.uk

Titanic Spa is celebrating winning for the fifth consecutive year in the World Luxury Spa Awards. Since 2019, Titanic Spa has consistently earned recognition from the World Luxury Spa Awards, and this year Titanic Spa has been honoured with three prestigious awards, ‘Best Luxury Sustainable Spa in Europe’, ‘Best Luxury Eco Spa in Northern Europe’ and ‘Best Luxury Spa Retreat in Northern Europe’. Q&A

VOYAGE of Discovery As they celebrate more industry awards, the director of Titanic Spa in Huddersfield, Warrick Burton, explains how they became the eco leader in wellbeing

Q Congratulations on your three awards at the World Luxury Spa Awards. What does that recognition mean to you? A Thank you! Securing our seventh World Luxury Spa Award in not just one, but three categories, is truly an exceptional accomplishment. The team at Titanic have worked extremely hard to achieve a spa that offers the epitome of luxury whilst simultaneously using methods that care for the planet, and for these efforts to be recognised is fantastic. Also, to be globally awarded for our efforts brings a real sense of achievement for everyone at Titanic Spa. Q From day one, was sustainability important to you? A Yes absolutely. As a spa we have a responsibility to prioritise the health and wellbeing of not only our guests,

56

but the planet too. By embracing sustainable practices, we ensure that our treatments and services not only enhance their physical and mental wellness, but also minimise any negative impact on the environment. Our sustainable practices like using organic products, conserving water, generating our own electricity and reducing waste help us create a harmonious balance between luxury and ecological consciousness. The planet we live in does so much for us, and we as humans must nurture and care for it as well as the eco-system. Focusing and putting in effort to be sustainable is essential to maintain a healthy symbiotic relationship with the earth. The smallest eco act will have an impact and can even grow into something more, like our eco spa! Q What was the story behind opening in a restored textile mill? A Rather than building something new, we chose to renovate an historic building.

This not only reuses materials, supporting the planet, but developing an Edwardian textile mill pays homage to the textile history and its great impact on Yorkshire, maintaining the heritage. A huge benefit of this location was also the geological riches of the area, which have become a great tool in our sustainability efforts. Q What kind of things do you do to ensure you are sustainable? A Titanic Spa is the UK’s first eco spa, with eco credentials that make us pioneers in the field of eco travel. We use renewable energy generation through solar photovoltaic roof panels, have our very own natural water source (found 100m below the Spa, which was an original water source when the building was working as an Edwardian textile mill), an OTEX laundry system, used by many hospitals, which is leading in energy efficiency and extremely powerful at cleaning too, as well as using organic and

fairtrade ingredients in our food from locally sourced, in-season produce. In 2022, after a year-long campaign called ‘Spa for our Planet’, where we partnered with animal conservation charity ‘The Born Free Foundation’ to help fund endangered animals across the globe, we decided in 2023 to support a cause a little closer to home, in the form of the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust. Titanic Spa has supported the charity with a limited edition ‘Green Futures’ Spa Package and an exclusive green smoothie, which is available in our spa restaurant. In 2023, we also added more electric car chargers into our car park, to support the use of electric vehicles amongst guests when visiting us, as well as replaced all lighting in the car park with LED lighting to cut down energy use considerably. In terms of the future, the Titanic Spa Eco Focus Group ensures we

“Being eco doesn't scrimp on luxury” are continually monitoring and reducing our impact on the environment. The group is also responsible for researching and implementing new measures such as the combined heat plant, which provides the majority of our heat and hot water. The Titanic Spa aim is to eventually become fully carbon neutral. Q One of the awards also recognised the luxury side to the spa. Was that a particularly pleasing award to win? A Definitely, whilst being recognised for our eco efforts is always an achievement,

being recognised for our luxury factor not only showcases the spa itself and the fantastic team, but shows that being eco doesn’t scrimp on the experience provided. Q What kind of things would we find at the spa that screams luxury? A We have one of the UKs most advanced Thermal Experiences. Our Heat & Experience offers a dynamic journey of alternating hot and cold experiences, including an invigorating ice-cold plunge pool, refreshing ice room, rejuvenating salt sauna and saunarium, and relaxing shower experiences. This unique experience provides an abundance of health benefits including enhanced immune systems, detoxification of the body, and support for optimal blood pressure. In addition to this we have the fantastic 1911 Bar, which provides premium cocktails designed by our team. Here guests can relax and sip on some delicious drinks A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

after a day full of relaxing. We also have spacious private apartments, which offer an exclusive sanctuary for guests providing a serene setting for ultimate relaxation. Not to mention our fantastic treatment menu, complete with traditional massages to more unique ones, ensuring all requirements are met. Q Awards aside, how has

2023 been for you? A It has been a fantastic year, not only thanks to a number of award wins, but also a great number of bookings too. This reflects how spa days and breaks are at the forefront of consumers’ minds, with the increasing understanding for the need of self-care, especially with the rise of stressrelated conditions, such as burnout. The highlight of the year was when we forged with Volkswagen ID Buzz to create an eco-road trip! This exciting partnership provided a platform to showcase how self-care experiences can harmoniously align with planet-friendly practices.

58

than ever before are keen to get away from the stresses of everyday life? A Most definitely! As mentioned, the rise in burnout is a growing concern, and finding time to prioritise self-care and wellness has become increasingly important. Taking time to relax, unwind and destress is not only beneficial for the wellbeing of the mind, but the body too. The awareness of this is evident in the emerging Gen Z generation and this awareness is progressively spreading across the generations. Q As we head into 2024, is there anything

new on the horizon at Titanic Spa?

A We have an exciting new partnership with

Comfort Zone coming up in 2024. Comfort Zone is known for its dedication to protecting the environment, which perfectly aligns with our longstanding vision of sustainability. It also means a brand-new treatment menu and retail products available to our guests, including an exciting pro-sleep massage which aims to promote overall relaxation and therefore improved sleep. As always, we are consistently looking into how we can improve our eco credentials as well, as change and improvement is continually important when it comes to helping the planet.

THE HISTORIC BUILDING

Q If you had a completely free day, how

would you spend it at Titanic Spa?

A What a brilliant question! In all honesty

I will take the time to relax and unwind, making the most of all of the spa facilities, including the Heat & Ice experience. I, of course, would indulge in a spa treatment, to help relieve tension before tucking into a deliciously nutritious meal at The Bistro.

THE TEAM CELEBRATE

T

he specialist team at private dental clinic Renovo Dental are celebrating after having been awarded two prestigious dentistry awards. Firstly, they were named Best Practice of the Year North West at the national Dentistry Awards 2023 at a glittering, blacktie dinner held at the Athena in Leicester. Renovo’s clinical director, Dr Usman Riaz, says: “We were up against some of the best practices in cities such as Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, so to become a finalist and then to win is just fantastic. This award is for the team and patients. We are all extremely proud as it’s a great achievement,” says Usman, who is joined by six dental clinicians at Renovo as well as a team of support staff and dental nurses. “It is testament to the dedication and passion of our super-talented team members, who consistently go above and beyond, ensuring every patient

experience is exceptional. It was a wonderful evening celebrating success with some of the best dental clinics that the country has to offer. Congratulations to all the finalists and award winners.” The Dentistry Awards are among the largest in the UK and the occasion has become wellrespected in terms of recognising excellence in dentistry across the whole of the UK. The strict criteria that judges use includes the individual skillset of all the team, patient case presentation, the innovative technology available at each individual practice and, of course, patient experience. “The judges look at the facilities and the quality of the work carried out across the board,” says Usman. “The panel of judges are from the dental industry – our peers, who are all experts. It’s a very vigorous process, but at Renovo we all work hard and to a very high standard, so to be recognised as the best of the best means a lot to us. “It’s a dream to achieve this accolade so early in our journey. A heartfelt thank you to our amazing patients who have been with us since opening less than three years ago – your support and motivation drives us to be the best. We are only as good as our patients. We’ll continue pushing our limits to make you proud.” More recently Renovo Dental was also awarded the title of Best Referral Practice 2023 North at the Private Dentistry awards. Held at Grosvenor House in London’s Mayfair, there were only two winners on the evening – in north and south categories, with Renovo walking away with the northern accolade. Renovo Dental is one of the few practices in the North West to offer such a high level of in-house specialist dentistry and being independent gives them the freedom to offer each patient the very best personalised treatment. The state-of-the-art surgery at Pendle House in Chatburn, features world-leading, digital technology. “We have invested in a skilled team and support them with the latest dental technology that means patients not only receive the highest standard of care, but treatments are faster, more comfortable and more pain free than ever,” adds Usman.

“IT IS A TESTAMENT TO THE DEDICATION OF OUR SUPER-TALENTED TEAM MEMBERS WHO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND” Receiving referrals from other dentists throughout the region, Renovo also takes selfreferred patients, who feel they may benefit from a consultation with one of the in-house specialists. From gum disease to preventing tooth loss, dental implants and bone regeneration to first class cosmetic dentistry, the team at Renovo Dental are committed to offering gold-standard, minimally invasive treatments to patients. “This is bespoke dentistry,” says Usman. “Everybody here has a specialism that they have worked very hard to achieve. We are all passionate about what we do and we are all very dedicated. Renovo is much bigger than a group of individual specialists, it’s about our patients, changing mindsets and attitudes surrounding dentistry. “We love what we do and we have come together with a vision to achieve excellence and we feel this latest award reflects this.”

Carly Glendinning meets celebrity personal trainer and founder of LDM Louisa Drake

I

’s Friday and I’m sitting in the waiting area at UNTIL, home to some of the UK’s top health and wellness professionals. I’m here to meet Louisa Drake, founder of the Louisa Drake Method, and known for training celebrities from Gwynth Paltrow to Rooney Mara. Louisa bounds around the corner, with a huge smile and I warm to her immediately. She puts me through my paces on the reformer Pilates machine and takes me through exercises with free weights, Pilates resistance bands, and a ball. As I perform each movement, Louisa assesses my strengths and weaknesses, checking which side feels more comfortable. We discuss my fitness goals and areas I want to improve (I

have a toddler, so it’s my core and pelvic floor). “I’m already making a mental note of which LDM videos will be great for you,” she says as I get ready to leave. The following week, an incredibly detailed fitness plan with nutritional guidelines, as well as notes about my weaker areas and how to improve them, lands in my inbox. Armed with my LDM Total Workout Kit, I’m all set to log onto the LDM platform and start training. With a background as a professional dancer, choreographer, and movement coach, Louisa’s programme is fusion of Pilates, yoga, barre, and HIIT. She’s recommended I aim for three full-body strength and resistance based sessions and two-three HIIT/

cardio sessions per week. Before meeting Louisa, I think I might have found this a bit daunting, but I’m so fired up after our session that I stick to it and find myself really enjoying it. The videos are led by different LDM instructors and I try a combination of 'Barre', 'Sculpt', 'Refine, Core' and Louisa’s signature 'Shape Changer' classes. I’ve noticed a huge difference in a few short weeks and I'd highly recommend a one-to-one with Louisa to supercharge your routine. Access to the LDM Virtual Studio starts from £20 a month. ith the arrival of winter, homeowners will be looking for ways to bring more warmth and depth to their homes, whether it’s through furniture or decorative choices. Using natural materials like wood has always been a popular choice, but according to WGSN, warming woods will be a leading trend in 2024 in the kitchen. From embracing wood’s natural beauty and

imperfections, to pairing light and dark tones with reclaimed materials, wood will continue to bring timeless versatility and texture. If you are looking to introduce wood to your kitchen, worktops are a great place to start. Wood, and more specifically reclaimed wood, will bring warmth and personality to a kitchen, making it feel instantly cosy and inviting. Reclaimed wood is an environmentally sustainable choice, which is visually appealing and offers unique qualities that are difficult to replicate with man-made materials. Its unique grain pattern and varying colours help to enhance the overall aesthetic of the space and complement different design styles with ease – from traditional and rustic to modern and contemporary. Wooden cabinetry has been a staple in kitchens for years, offering a range of advantages that make them a popular choice in both traditional and modern homes. The design has a timeless appeal that makes them attractive to homeowners, regardless of ever-changing trends, meaning they beautifully complement almost all colours and textures. Wooden cabinets can also help to absorb sound, reducing noise levels in the kitchen, which is particularly beneficial in open-plan spaces. Reclaimed wood is particularly popular due to the unique character it can offer, with each piece contributing to a one-ofa-kind appearance. The imperfections give the furniture a sense of history and its natural beauty can enhance the overall aesthetic of a room. Open shelving has certainly increased in popularity as it helps smaller kitchens

feel larger and gives people the chance to showcase their favourite kitchenware and personal possessions. Reclaimed wood is a great choice for shelving as it adds warmth, character and a natural aesthetic. From wallmounted shelving to pantry storage and open shelving on kitchen islands, introducing wood shelving is a great way of connecting interior spaces with nature, which can enhance wellbeing and create a calming atmosphere. Wooden flooring is consistently popular thanks to its practical, attractive and durable qualities. Generally a more comfortable and cosy surface than tiles or concrete, opting for wood flooring is particularly beneficial if you’re on your feet cooking and preparing food for extended periods of time. As flooring occupies such a prominent part of a room, why not opt for reclaimed wood. It introduces a textured and unique appearance to a kitchen, which offers a more interesting and warming finish that doesn’t compromise the planet in the process – which can’t always be achieved with other materials. POOLSIDE AT THE MAGNOLIA HOTEL

he afternoon we fly into Faro, there’s a very light mist of rain. It seems we’ve brought it with us from London, and everyone from the airport staff to our taxi driver is up in arms about it. The Algarve is famed for having 300 days of sunshine every year. Thankfully, the uncharacteristic rain spell doesn’t last long, and by the time we’ve arrived at The Magnolia Hotel in Almancil, the clouds are a distant memory. With its Palm Springs-inspired decor, The Magnolia is the perfect escape from dreary London. Think bohemian wicker chairs and neon signage. I could quite happily lounge by the pool all day with a cocktail in hand, but that’s unlikely to be on the cards as we’re holidaying with our toddler. THE CAMPUS

The Magnolia is, in fact, a great destination for families. The boutique hotel has 74 rooms, and seven cabin-style cottages. We’re staying in one of the cottages, located in a peaceful area of the hotel’s grounds. Our cute little cabin is super spacious inside, with a kitchen / living room area, two bedrooms, and a bathroom with an all-important bathtub. The hotel has set up a travel cot in the second bedroom, and we feel like we’ve got the ideal home-from-home for the next few days. The Magnolia has the benefit of being on the edge of Quinta do Lago, with access to the resort’s many facilities. Known for its award-winning golf courses, it’s also become a wellness destination thanks to ‘The Campus’, a stylish sports complex, which opened in 2018. World-class athletes and professional sports teams travel from all over the world to train here and with the extensive facilities and feel of a private member’s club, it’s easy to see why. During the summer months, the resort has a variety of programmes to keep children entertained – from dance, to tennis, and soccer camps. My two-year-old however, is more than happy to play in the playground with my husband whilst I take a restorative Yin Yoga class and sneak off to the spa. We have lunch at Dano’s, the sports bar at The Campus. The food is great, with plenty of plant-based options for me and a crowdpleasing kid’s menu. As we enjoy our meal, we notice that there’s lots of young families holidaying with the grandparents. Quinta do Lago is perfect for an intergenerational holiday – with an activity to please literally everyone. Later, it’s back to The Magnolia for an afternoon of swimming. During our stay, one of the best things about being able to access the Quinta do Lago resort is the variety of restaurants on offer. We had a buffet-style continental breakfast every day at The Magnolia, but ventured out of the hotel for lunch and dinner. The resort is set in 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park, so you need a car to get around. We didn’t

hire one, but it was no problem for the hotel to arrange private transfers for us. We ate at Casa do Lago, an elegant fresh fish restaurant with stunning views of the lake; UMAMI, which is said to be the most refined Asian gastronomic experience in the Algarve; and Casa Velha – Quinta do Lago’s newly refurbished Portuguese restaurant. The food was incredible at all of the restaurants, and I was especially impressed with the plant-based options at Casa Velha. With creative flavour combinations, each dish was an absolute treat. The service was also impeccable. Quinta do Lago does offer professional babysitting services, but we chose to bring our daughter with us in the evenings. The staff were amazing with her, and when she had a bit of an overtired meltdown one evening, it was no problem to box up the rest of our meal and order a car to whisk us straight home. It’s this attention to detail and easygoing atmosphere that makes holidaying at Quinta do Lago so great for young families. Parents will love the stylish decor and world-class restaurants, and the whole family can enjoy an active getaway with the range of activities on offer. And sunshine is (pretty much) guaranteed too. Holidays THE FEVERSHAM ARMS HOTEL

Absolutely Yorkshire picks out three of the UK’s finest destinations for a luxury break with one foot in the past

The Feversham Arms Hotel

 Originally an old coaching inn, The Feversham Arms Hotel was rebuilt and renamed in 1855 by the Earl of Feversham on the site of an older hostelry. In 1967 the hotel was bought by Charrington’s Brewery before being bought by Mr and Mrs de Aragues in 1977. The de Aragues then purchased the three cottages alongside to extend the hotel and added the swimming pool and gardens. The Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa, as it is known today, was born. Looking for a fresh, glowing start to the new year? A Feversham Arms’ Verbena Spa Day provides a

88

The 60 minute treatment features a sensuous, back massage incorporating a Nectarine & Honey Blossom Salt Scrub treatment to exfoliate away dead skin cells, smooth the skin, and stimulate circulation, it promises to slough away any remnants of last year, and promotes new beginnings. The sweet, soothing honey candle scent lit during your treatment soothes the mind, while apricot kernel oil is rich in vitamins A and E works to renew skin cells, nourish skin, and fight free radicals. This treatment encourages you to feel relaxed, rejuvenated and deeply cherished.

The spa package featuring this heavenly ritual includes the use of Verbena Spa’s thermal facilities, featuring the outdoor heated pool and hot tub (between 10am and 2pm), a one-course lunch and glass of chilled Prosecco. An overnight stay can be added to your spa day, choose from a selection, such as Sweet Honey Body Ritual spa day costs from £125 per person (based on midweek pricing, Fri–Sun inc, is £140 pp). SPORTING CHANCE REPTON SCHOOL

At the time of going to print, Repton School were on the cusp of winning a 50th national title in hockey - and as they had four teams in the National Indoor finals, there was a good chance of reaching this landmark figure. This comes after having already won both U18 and U15 girls cricket titles, and won more gold medals in the England Schools Swimming Association championships than any other school in the UK. repton.org.uk

Window to the WORLD James Wilton has quite the varied role at Repton School. He offers Absolutely a little insight into life at the iconic institution

Q What things surprised you when you started working at Repton? A That time works entirely differently! Repton is an extraordinarily varied and busy place, but I came to it from an extraordinarily varied and busy day school in outer London. I thought it would be very similar, but I was surprised by just how different full-boarding life is. Your day may well end at 11pm sometimes, you may be off with an excursion on a Sunday afternoon, but those chunks of time for normal life like walking Labradors or going to a supermarket end up coming in somewhere else. You just end up living a different rhythm, especially as all the teaching staff live on site. This means that those times you want to see a pupil so you can support them (as an English teacher, usually with essay writing!) can also be found more readily, even at unusual times. That is massively empowering for the pupil and the teacher – elastic time!

Q Tell us about your current role? A Hugely different to any role I have had in

teaching so far: Deputy Head and in charge of Marketing and Admissions (with a little Digital Development on the side). This role is very intensely about communication. I have responsibility for how Repton presents itself, on paper, online, in person, and for ensuring that when we engage with the outside world we do so with a really strong sense of our aims and values. There’s a lot more business involved, certainly, and I mostly work with non-teaching staff now, but still it involves trying to keep people excited about what they could achieve at Repton.

Q What do you enjoy the most when conducting a tour? A I love showing a family – and particularly a prospective applicant themselves – what they would be able to do at Repton. I love

“IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE A SCHOOL MORE SET UP TO BALANCE THE MANY COMPETING DEMANDS ON A YOUNG PERSON” that it starts with trying to get to know them as well as we can, and then my job is to show them what Repton could do to support and enhance that. We have a lovely rhyming triplet to sum up what a child can expect to become when they are at Repton: ‘Rounded, Grounded and Unbounded’. I think that final one is the one that is most enjoyable to flesh out when touring a family; the sense of unlimited possibility that a Repton education could offer. Q Is there one thing they are always amazed by? A I think there is a special moment when a

family sit down to have lunch with our pupils in one of our boarding houses. They have just had an hour of seeing some of the most highly developed and exciting educational facilities in the country, and I am quite sure they expect to sit down with children who are a certain kind of ‘alpha’, that loud confidence that I have seen at some organisations. The thing that really amazes them is that the pupils can be in a place like this, achieving what they achieve (national titles, Ivy League university places, securing design patents, becoming Student Artist of the Year, giving concerts in The Vatican to name but a few) and do all that without losing the down-toearth groundedness that we prize so highly. They are regular, nice, friendly and openminded young people who are getting to push themselves in all the ways they want to. Q Today, what do you think makes Repton stand out in the education world? A I think it is hard to imagine a school more set up to balance the many competing demands on a young person, especially a high achieving one. We are smaller than a lot of schools of our heritage and standing; 630 pupils from Year 9 to Year 13. That allows us a lot more license to tailor and personalise things for the individual, especially when that is combined with resident teaching staff. The houses are then able to play a vital role in coordinating the many draws on a pupil’s time, making sure those are

94

not negatively impacting the academic life of the child, and ensuring their wellbeing and happiness is balanced with the other goals they have. We also have the most wonderful Prep School, which allows pupils an uninterrupted through-school journey from age 3 to 18, and boarding from age 7 onwards. It makes a lot of sense to us in an increasingly high-pressure and complex educational landscape to work in this way. Q What is to come in 2024? A We have launched our Strategic Plan,

which is full of truly exciting initiatives. We are very fortunate to be a school with many opportunities and a family of schools internationally that are thriving, and that allows us to be bold rather than conservative. In the next few years nearly 10,000 pupils across the globe will be wearing Repton uniform. All this means that the challenges coming down the track for schools like ours (and aren’t there always those challenges?) are going to be met with confidence by us, our pupils and their families, and the Strategic Plan will be our North Star during that period. We’d definitely encourage people to head to our website and take a look at that. It is very exciting.

ysgarth Prep School, a beacon of academic excellence for boys for nearly 150 years, is delighted to announce its transformative decision to introduce co-education in Years 4–8 from September 2024. The Governors’ decision to expand the co-educational model follows more than 30 years of successful co-education at Aysgarth’s PrePrep school, which teaches boys and girls from Nursery to Year 3. Headmaster Jonathon Anderson, and his wife Hester, have huge experience in private education and lead an exceptionally talented team at

Aysgarth, which enjoys a 50:50 male-tofemale staff ratio compared to 15:85 in the UK primary sector. The Andersons emphasise that the Governors’ decision was made following feedback from an in-depth 2023 parent survey, which indicated a strong desire for this change within the existing Aysgarth community. Jonathon says: “This decision is about making our best even better. Aysgarth has a longstanding tradition of preparing boys for success at leading senior schools and beyond. With this expansion, we aim to provide the same exemplary educational experience for girls, ensuring they receive the finest opportunities, ambitious teaching, and celebrated pastoral care.” Co-education will not affect Aysgarth’s fundamental principles and

“WE AIM TO PROVIDE THE SAME EXEMPLARY EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR GIRLS ”

ethos: a commitment to providing equal opportunities for collaboration and competition, and to fostering an environment where students learn to communicate effectively, disagree respectfully, and develop a broader perspective on diverse views. Aysgarth has earned several accolades, from award-winning pastoral care to excellent academic results, and its strength lies in the long list of trends it has no plans to pursue. Its Prep school is predominantly a boarding school, with Saturday lessons and a daily chapel service, and it sends pupils to more than 20 notable senior schools every year. The school is looking forward to its new chapter and the opportunities it brings, continuing a tradition of providing quality education and preparing pupils for future success. Situated in a particularly beautiful rural location in the North Yorkshire Dales, Aysgarth has excellent modern facilities and provides pupils with the opportunity to develop into confident, ambitious, and resilient children who follow the school’s values of respect, endeavour, and courage. aysgarthschool.co.uk

ueen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) are celebrating after QE College placed second in The Sunday Times Parent Power 2023 national school league tables for A-level performance and 17th for overall academic performance; whilst QE College and QE Faculty placed first and second in York and first and third in the North for A-level performance in the same publication. This means that QE College retains the title of The Sunday Times Top School in the North for Academic Performance for a third consecutive year along with its position as the top school in York for academic results, with QE Faculty also flying high and cementing its place as the premier northern independent school for students wishing to pursue a personalised curriculum to the highest possible standards. Principal, Dan Machin, said of the result: “We are extremely proud of the student

Queen Ethelburga’s College & Faculty: the top two York schools for A Level results achievements in both our senior schools. Offering the choice of provision in QE Faculty and QE College provides students with the chance to excel in whichever route suits them best, and the results speak for themselves after nearly 20 years since QE Faculty was established. To be placed as the top two schools in York for academic performance at A-level is incredible and shows a dedication to excellence by both students and staff.” Head of QE College, Steven Turner, adds: “We are absolutely delighted that the College has been recognised as the Independent Secondary School of the Year in the North for Academic Performance for the third consecutive year. This prestigious award is a testament to the incredible hard work of our diverse and ambitious students, the dedication of our talented staff, and the support of our parent community. Within the College we foster a culture of academic excellence whilst promoting happiness, positive health and an enriching all round student experience.

This accolade reflects our commitment to shaping future leaders and building the skills required for lifelong learning.” Head of QE Faculty, Lauren Blakeley, comments: “I am very proud of what our students have achieved. To be placed seventh in the North of England for overall academic performance is a remarkable accomplishment. We see the talent and ability of our students every day, but it is fantastic to see their efforts reflected in this accolade. In QE Faculty, we are lucky to have the flexibility to shape each students’ curriculum around their learning styles, interests and aspirations and I believe this has led to these fantastic results because often the most successful students are the happiest ones.” To find out more, visit qe.org or attend an Open Morning on 27 January or 9 March 2024. or too long, the only way many people could access the additional care and support they needed as they grew older was to sell the family home and dip into their equity to pay for it – and the main option provided was in a care home setting. However, local care provider Westward Care has been offering a luxury alternative to a care home for a number of years at their Roundhay and Headingley locations. Set within landscaped gardens, Southlands and Headingley Hall Retirement Apartments offer beautifully appointed one and two bed apartments available to buy. The apartments are an attractive option for independent older people looking for the added reassurance of care and support available onsite 24/7 if, or when, they might need it and a maintenance free home.

5. Rightsizing and Simplifying: As you age, you might prefer a smaller, more manageable living space. Westward Care retirement apartments offer one-level living arrangements, making it easier to navigate and maintain. All of their apartments have been designed with accessibility in mind with features like ramps, wider doorways, and grab bars. Ultimately, the decision to buy a retirement apartment depends on your personal preferences, lifestyle, and future plans. It’s a choice that considers not just where you want to live, but how you want to live in your later years. You can find out all about Westward Care’s retirement apartments and wider care and support options (residential care, dementia care and short stay / respite) at westwardcare.co.uk

So, what are the benefits of a Westward Care Retirement Apartment? 1. Financial Security: By purchasing the apartment you get to retain your assets. Instead of having to move into a care home and paying an all-inclusive weekly fee to cover accommodation and services (some of which you may not want or need) you can live completely independently in your apartment, paying only for the services you use, but with the reassurance that help and support is on-site if you need it. 2. Maintenance-Free Living: Westward Care Retirement apartments come with maintenance services, taking care of tasks like gardening, exterior upkeep, and other chores. This allows you to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle without the stress of home maintenance.

Using trusts to reduce Inheritance Tax

One expert at Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors writes about how to manage inheritance tax

I

By SHARON RICHARDSON

nheritance tax planning for high net worth individuals is an incredibly complex business. The extensive assets of a high value estate – combining cash, businesses, stocks and shares, property portfolios, and precious personal items like jewellery and art – can quickly add up to an enormous inheritance tax bill. At Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors, my expert team is on hand to help with your Estate and Inheritance Tax Planning. We can discuss your options and arrange a wealth management solution that could reduce your inheritance tax bill, provides support for future asset growth, and ensures your beneficiaries receive the maximum amount possible from your generous endowments. Here are three ways we can help...

Inheritance Tax Planning for a High Value Estate When it comes to estate and inheritance tax planning for high net worth individuals, early preparation and careful attention to detail are the key to ensuring your heirs inherit the maximum value from your estate. Along with the vast array of assets, the added tax complications of ever-expanding wealth, family businesses, international property, and potentially tricky family dynamics can all cause additional distress at an already difficult time. For instance, if you get divorced, you may want to rewrite your Will to reflect that change. Or if you remarry and want to ensure your children from a previous relationship are provided for after your death, that will require advance planning and specific wording in your Will.

A trust is a legal arrangement where an asset is placed under the control of a trustee or group of trustees. Once it is in the control of the trustees, after a certain period of time has passed, the asset no longer technically belongs to you – so it won’t be counted as part of your estate when you die. Used smartly, trusts can greatly reduce your estate’s inheritance tax bill.

We can help you with Inheritance Tax and Estate Planning If you’re considering establishing a trust for your beneficiaries, talk to Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors. Our experienced wealth management solicitors will talk you through the options for your high-value estate, including trusts, inheritance tax gifts, and other ways to reduce your inheritance tax bill.
