ABSOLUTELY’S January issue highlights

The new year is here. And as usual, we're venturing into 2023 with the best intentions. This will be the year that we learn Spanish, take up Pilates, paint our walls and stop eating sugar. In this issue

we cover countless ways of improving wellbeing in mind and body – and we meet someone who changed their life to follow a passion. Deborah Brett left a career in fashion to craft plates and pots out of clay in her garden studio – and not only has she never been happier, but she is making some extremely beautiful pieces. The pull of ceramics was always there for her, and one day she decided to commit to it. Maybe 2023 will be that kind of year. And if you're not looking for a full transformation, maybe happiness can be found in wild swimming, bread baking or puppy yoga, all of which we focus on in these pages. Happy new year.

LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

21 JANUARY, NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM

Usher in the year of the Rabbit in style. The National Maritime Museum has been hosting this annual celebration for over twenty years and it’s an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to engage with Asian culture. After being opened by a traditional Lion Dance, the celebrations will include a series of workshops, demonstrations and performances, as well as opportunities to take intimate tours of the galleries. rmg.co.uk

Following a major redevelopment, the iconic Leighton House reopened its doors last autumn with an exciting programme of exhibition and events. One of next month’s highlights, available to book now, is an evening in conversation with sixties fashion model and muse, Pattie Boyd. Famously the inspiration for George Harrison’s 'Something' and Eric Clapton's ‘Layla’ and ‘Wonderful Tonight’, her portrait was captured by some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century including David Bailey, Terence Donovan, David Hurn and Norman Parkinson. She is also a celebrated photographer in her own right and in her latest book, Pattie Boyd: My Life in Pictures (Reel Art Press) she grants intimate access to her personal archive. OMNI is fast becoming a gallery to watch. They kick o their ambitious 2023 programme with two exciting solo exhibitions by young emerging American artists. Also opening in late January, Natalie Westbrook, a Pittsburgh based artist whose dynamic and deeply arresting works deploy bright colours and chaotic compositions to create an entirely unique and unrivalled painterly lexicon.

I MAGINE THAT

Q How does it feel to be part of the KURIOS family?

A KURIOS is a very special show. We’re a cast and crew of 122 from 27 di erent nationalities and it’s an honour to be part of such a creative and brilliant team. I’ve been with Cirque du Soleil for 13 years now, working on a few di erent shows including Amaluna and CORTEO, and I joined KURIOS as Artistic Director back in 2016. My job is to oversee everything artistic on the show: I work with stage management, wardrobe, coaches and performance medicine, who are all experts in their fields, along with 50 world class artists.

Q Can you tell us a little about the show?

A KURIOS is a show that really celebrates the imagination. We follow the journey of a scientist, who believes that a hidden, invisible

world exists. Set in the second half of the 19th century during the industrial revolution, the show takes aesthetic inspiration from this era, which was a time of great invention. It’s about the capacity to invent and dream, and we want people to leave the show feeling like anything is possible.

Q What’s unique about KURIOS?

A Every Cirque du Soleil show is di erent, and KURIOS is no exception. There are acts in our show that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world. An example of this is Acro-Net… imagine it like the world’s largest trampoline. The inspiration for this act actually came from the safety net of a trapeze act on another show, which was a bit too bouncy. The creative minds took this as an opportunity to explore something never been done before, so for Acro-Net they made a net even more bouncy, to allow a team of six acrobats to propel another performer up 45ft in the air. It’s a thrill to watch and a huge crowd pleaser, when audiences realise what’s happening you can hear the excitement. Much like the show, this idea that just because something doesn’t exist yet, it doesn’t mean it can’t be dreamt up and made a reality.

Q What goes on behind the scenes?

A We have a technical team who are in charge of everything from rigging and automation, to lighting sound, carpentry and props. KURIOS has the most props of any

Cirque du Soleil show, 426 at creation, but we’ve also added a few more along the way! Their attention to detail is incredible, from big to small. We have a mechanical hand used in the show, which weighs about 750lbs and is driven by two artists underneath to drive the hand forward, and allow the fingers to move and come to life. Then we have wardrobe, who are a team that collectively maintain over 8,000 costume pieces – it’s phenomenal. The artists also do all their own makeup, which can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours every day.

Q What’s your favourite part of KURIOS?

A That’s a tough question! Acts like Acro-Net, Rola Bola and Aerial Bike are wonderfully acrobatic, but there’s moments of real beauty that come from simplicity too. Continent of Hands is a very special act, where an artist creates a world just with his hands. It’s projected onto a hot air balloon so everyone can see the magic. His grandmother and grandfather were deaf, so they communicated with their hands, and he learnt this craft from them. Non verbal communication is a wonderful part of what we do and what makes our show so accessible wherever we go.

An exhibition dedicated to the work of Bill Brandt reveals the secrets of the photographer’s artistry

20 ABSOLUTELY magazines
BILL BRANDT, WOMAN SWIMMING TATE. ACCEPTED BY HM GOVERNMENT IN LIEU OF INHERITANCE TAX FROM THE ESTATE OF BARBARA LLOYD AND ALLOCATED TO TATE 2009 © THE ESTATE OF BILL BRANDT

Bill Brandt: Inside the Mirror, this is Tate Britain’s first exhibition dedicated to celebrated British photographer Bill Brandt (1904-1983). It reveals the secrets of his artistry and the fascinating ways he staged and refined his photographs.

Bill Brandt was first known as a photojournalist, renowned in the 1930s for his observations of British life and later for his landscapes, portraits and nudes. But his images were always carefully crafted to ‘enter the mirror’, as he put it, employing formal experimentation and artistic interventions to evoke the surreal beauty he saw in everyday life. This exhibition celebrates his theatrical direction of people and setting, his mastery of composition and abstraction, and his dialogues with the work of other artists.

Although Brandt’s images can appear candid and spontaneous, he did not capture people unaware. He worked closely with those he photographed, directing and lighting them to cast ‘the spell that charges the commonplace with beauty’. He sometimes waited for hours to capture e ects at specific times of day – as in Woman Swimming – and some of his most mysterious scenes were taken at night. Brandt developed his own film and printed his own photographs, giving him further opportunities to rebalance light and dark, and change the composition through cropping and enlarging. He even used ink and pencil to alter prints, for example introducing plumes of smoke onto Hail, Hell & Halifax. The series of Brandt’s nudes shown in the exhibition include some of his best-known and most evocative works, which further explore his interest in altered perspectives, surreal e ects and abstract compositions.

As well as being an artist in his own right, Brandt took inspiration from many other artists and art forms. The

exhibition explores some of these conversations between his photographs and other imagery, from Gustave Doré’s engravings of London to Henry Moore’s air raid shelter drawings and Orson Welles’ 1941 movie Citizen Kane. Brandt’s handmade photobook ‘A Dream’ – which is being exhibited for the first time – reveals further influences, such as John Tenniel’s surreal illustrations to Alice in Wonderland and the dramatic shadows of Expressionist cinema. Brandt also became famous for his portraits of artists, such as the actor Glenda Jackson at home in the early 1970s, and there is an arresting close-up of sculptor Louise Nevelson’s eye.

TILE COUNSEL

Leighton House has reopened after a major transformation. Famed for its opulent interiors, extraordinary mosaic floors and tiles acquired through Lord Leighton’s travels to Turkey, Egypt and Syria, the Holland Park house is a beloved destination for all design enthusiasts.

The project has focused on the twentiethcentury additions made in a new wing at the east end of the original house, which has been completely refurbished revealing original historic features and creating new exhibition spaces and displays, the De Morgan café which opens onto the redesigned garden, a new Learning Centre and a collections store.

Leighton’s Winter Studio, an extension of the original house supported on cast iron columns and built at the end of the 1880s to

allow him to work through the winter months, is now fully restored and integrated into the rest of the historic house interiors. The Entrance Hall has been reinstated as it was in Leighton’s day, featuring a large painting from the workshop of Domenico Tintoretto, which formed part of Leighton’s original collection. A separate entrance to the house, specifically used by Leighton’s models, is also revealed. This was a common feature of the time, used to signal the professional and o cial role of the model whilst keeping them separate from families, something not applicable to Leighton but he adhered to anyway in order to follow social etiquette.

The new wing features a series of commissions that respond to the iconic interiors of the historic house and continue the house’s unique dialogue with artists and craftsmanship from the Middle East

and North Africa. Oneness, the first contemporary artwork on permanent display at the museum, is an 11-metre-high mural hand-painted by the Iranian artist Shahrzad Gha ari, which envelopes the curved walls of a new helical staircase across three floors. Inspired by a 13th century poem by Rumi exploring cultural unity, its turquoise calligraphic brushstrokes reference the distinctive tiles from the iconic Arab Hall. A suite of specially commissioned furniture handmade by Syrian artisans based in Amman, Jordan, is also featured in the new spaces. The pieces feature marquetry derived from inlaid motifs on a Syrian chest that Lord Leighton acquired on his travels and converted into a seat within the historic house and were created in partnership with Turquoise Mountain - a UK charity set up to preserve and develop traditional craft practices, originally in Afghanistan, as a means of economic regeneration. An ambitious exhibition programme runs throughout the year, presented across the two new gallery spaces.

Artists and Neighbours: the Holland Park Circle continues until 19 March and examines the story of the Holland Park Circle, a unique community of prominent artists whose fashionable, purposebuilt studio-houses, many of which still border Leighton House, heralded the era of the artist as celebrity. Simultaneously, A Life of Drawing: Highlights from the Leighton collection (to 19 February) showcases a rarely-seen selection of Leighton’s exceptional studies and sketches made within his studio and on his travels.

Leighton House reopens its doors to visitors in tandem with its sister museum, Sambourne House - a virtually unaltered Victorian terraced house nearby that provides a unique window into the art and society of the era. Together, the houses o er a programme of live events providing an intimate look into the world of each artist and their connections with our contemporary world.

ABSOLUTELY eats out…

There’s something reassuring about the fact that even in our fast-paced world, even in a London that’s always looking for the next big thing, hotels are still serving afternoon tea. And that despite our brains being frazzled by nonstop bad news and constant updates from our phones, there are still people who choose to spend a few tech-free hours sitting in an armchair and eating cakes in the afternoon.

At The Kensington Hotel, the feel is traditional and muted, but also somehow contemporary. Comfort is key, and there’s a sense of being cocooned from the world, as if nothing that happens outside this bubble could touch you. We sit in vast squashy chairs for a tea menu inspired by the travels of Phileas Fogg, of Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days. This is the first in a series of adventurous seasonal teas at the hotel, o ering a twist on the traditional tea menu but without changing it too much. So there’s a glass of champagne to

start, and pots of fragrant tea, all served in a hushed and respectful way, because after all, afternoon tea is a serious business. Even though it’s neither lunch nor dinner, there’s a lot of food, and its function is as much to be decorative as to be delicious. First are the savouries, themed for London, Rome and Cairo: a miniature beef and gravy pie, a parmesan gougere and a falafel ball. Next come sandwiches, for the same cities: Smoked salmon and cream cheese, sundried tomato and mozzarella and hummous with caramelised onion. And then the elegant sweets: bano ee pie, tiramisu and a raspberry, rose and pistachio mousse. All of these colourful and varied creations come prettily served on a traditional tiered stand, accompanied by the obligatory scones with cream and jam. We take our time. It’s a lovely, almost otherworldly decadent treat to spend an afternoon lingering over an unneccessary meal, and a welcome respite from the realities of life.

Coconut Brioche

Makes 4 Brioches

Preparation time: 20 min

Resting time: 4 h 30 min–4 h 45 min Baking time: 25 min

INGREDIENTS

• 80 g (1/2 cup/3 oz) coconut sugar

• 500 g (3 1/2 cups/1 lb 2 oz) plain (all-purpose) flour (T55)

• 220 g (1 cup/7 3/4 oz) crème fraîche

• 2 eggs + 1 beaten egg for glazing

• 15 g (1 1/2 tbsp) fresh yeast, crumbled

• 9 g (1 3/4 tsp) Guérande sea salt

• 50 g (1/4 cup/1 3/4 oz) coconut oil

• 100 g (scant 1/2 cup/3 1/2 oz) butter, softened and diced

METHOD

1 Combine all the ingredients, except the coconut oil, beaten egg for glazing and butter, in a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Mix on low speed for 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Incorporate the coconut oil and butter on low speed. The dough should pull away from the sides while remaining slightly sticky. Cover the mixer bowl with a cloth and leave the dough to rise for 2 hours at room temperature.

2 On a floured work counter, divide the dough into four pieces of equal weight (about 270 g/91⁄2 oz each). Loosely shape the dough pieces into balls and place on a tray. Refrigerate for 30–45 minutes.

3 Shape the dough pieces into boules (see page 30), tightening well. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with baking (parchment) paper. Cover with a cloth and prove (proof) for 2 hours at room temperature.

4 Preheat the oven to 150°C (300°F). Brush the brioches with beaten egg and bake for 25 minutes.

2 Remove the brioches from the oven, then cool on a wire rack.

Lentil and Chickpea

Flour

Bread

Makes 2 Loaves

Preparation time: 20 min

Resting time: 4 h 45 min Baking time: 1 h 15 min

INGREDIENTS

• 75 g (2/3 cup/2 3/4 oz) lentil flour

• 75 g (2/3 cup/2 3/4 oz) chickpea (gram) flour

• 350 g (2 1/2 cups/12 oz) plain (all- purpose) flour (T55)

• 300 g (1 1/4 cups/10 1/2 oz) water at 16°C (60°F)

• 20 g (2 tbsp/3/4 oz) coconut sugar

• 9 g (1 3/4 tsp) Guérande sea salt

• 5 g (1 1/2 tsp) fresh yeast, crumbled

• 1 tbsp olive oil

METHOD

1 Combine all the ingredients in a stand mixer fitted with a

dough hook. Mix and knead for 4 minutes on low speed and then for 4 minutes on high speed. Cover the mixer bowl with a cloth and leave the dough to rise for 3 hours at room temperature, folding after 1 1/2 hours.

2 On a lightly floured work counter, divide the dough into two pieces of equal weight (about 420 g/15 oz each).

Roughly shape into balls. Cover with a cloth and rest for 15 minutes at room temperature.

3 Shape the dough pieces into boules (see page 30) and transfer to a baking sheet lined with baking (parchment) paper. Cover with a cloth and prove (proof) for 1 1/2 hours at room temperature.

4 Place a baking pan on the lowest oven rack and preheat the oven to 250°C (480°F). Score the loaves with a cross (see page 34). Once the oven is hot, pour 50 ml (3 1/2 tbsp/1 3/4 fl oz) water into the hot baking pan. Put the loaves and pan of water into the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Lower the temperature to 220°C (425°F) and bake for another 45 minutes.

5 Remove the loaves from the oven, then cool on a wire rack.

STOP THE GRIND

Everybody holds stress in a di erent part of their body and for me, that place is my jaw. I’m not alone in this either, it’s estimated that around 10 million people in the UK alone struggle with Bruxism, which is the o cial term for teeth grinding. Constantly clenching your jaw can cause a menagerie of issues, including chronic headaches, face and neck pain, not to mention the damage you do to your teeth. There are several potential solutions, one increasingly popular and somewhat unexpected one being botox. I was lucky enough to pay a visit to one of the expert practitioners, Jennifer Doyle, at The Clinic in Holland Park and try this solution out for myself. Jennifer explained how botox gets injected into a muscle in your jaw called the Masseter. It works by blocking the nerve transmission telling the muscle to contract and therefore minimising movement. The idea is that the muscle will shrink and atrophy with time, similar to how your muscles get smaller if you stop going to the gym. She explained that the treatment will help minimise the stress I am putting on my jaw and will lessen the daily discomfort I experience as a result. It’s been a few weeks since then, and I’m pleased to say that she was right.

Q What inspired you to create 'The Female Curve'?

A In 2020, I decided to go through an egg freezing journey and before my first appointment I received a series of videos about female physiology. It blew my mind how little I knew about my body, so I started reading and learning about how hormones actually work.

Q How did you go about developing the program?

A I started by tracking my own cycle and then adjusted not only when and how I train, but also my diet and lifestyle as a whole. The e ects were transformational. From there I designed an eight-week pilot program, which has proved to be a real success with so many.

A There’s a massive stigma around female hormones and they are seen as the ‘down-side’ of being a woman. But in reality, living in sync with your cycle can supercharge your health, fitness, and wellness. It’s proven by science, and has already improved the lives of hundreds of women.

Q Why do women's bodies need a di erent approach?

A Centuries of male bias have created a set of recommendations that often work against our hormones and can be harmful. It isn't enough to just apply a blanket one size fits all approach to all women's bodies, so our approach is hyperpersonalised to each individual.

Q What does a woman's body generally need during its cycle?

A It's di erent for everyone, after all, female bodies are super complex and unique and they must be treated accordingly. That being said, roughly speaking, when it comes to exercise, your follicular phase is your strong phase and your luteal phase is a more calm restorative phase. So it's best to push hard at the beginning of your cycle and then slow down towards the end. Equally the way you need to nourish your body changes throughout the month. For example, your body temperature rises in the second half of the month, so you need more calories- hence those cravings

Wild swimming

If you’re not a wild swimming enthusiast, it won’t be because nobody has tried to convert you yet. Being able to jump into cold water, whatever the weather, has become a badge of honour among urban women who are looking to feel truly alive, as enthusiasts will tell you endlessly. It has become a cliche: the Hampstead ponds are visited daily, after school drop-o , by hordes of women in dryrobes seeking the endorphin rush that comes from plunging into unlikely temperatures and staying immersed for as long as you can without turning blue. If you haven’t got the bug yet, then maybe 2023 will be your time. And fashionwise, there’s a welcome improvement on the dryrobe in the shape of Wylding’s brilliant fleece-lined boilersuit, designed to wear over a swimsuit for ease of dressing and undressing in the cold. wylding.co.uk

The powder is said to stimulate growth of the brain cells and can boost your memory, improve focus, and enhance your mood, whilst supporting digestion with its strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-boosting abilities. CLEAN SLEEP

oolroom has launched new sleep trials on all its natural bedding products to give customers absolute confidence wool can help improve your sleep and mood in 2022. According to Woolroom’s Clean Sleep Report, 95% of people identified a good night’s sleep as being important to their mood, whilst 30% said they feel more anxious after a bad night’s sleep. With this in mind, there is no better time than the present to set yourself a new year’s sleep resolution to help you get the Zzz’s you deserve.

Sleeping better can not only enhance physical, mental, and emotional health, but also generate the energy and self-control necessary to achieve other goals in the new year.

At Woolroom, the UK’s leading luxury wool bedding retailer, you can find a huge range of bedding and mattresses which

Wcan help to create the perfect ‘clean sleep’ environment. Wool is the only completely natural, sustainable, and renewable bedding fibre, and contributes to a better night’s clean sleep owing to its temperature regulating, hypoallergenic and chemical free properties. It can absorb more moisture unlike other natural fibres such as cotton and down, delivering a deeper, more regenerative sleep.

To give customers 100% confidence in their purchase, this January, Woolroom has launched a 30 night sleep guarantee on all individual bedding products, and a 60 night sleep guarantee on all bedding sets, allowing customers to return items should they not be 100% satisfied. You can even trace the wool in the bedding back to the exact farm it was sourced from.

For those also looking to invest in a mattress, Woolroom has a beautiful new Artisan Collection of mattresses using the finest natural fillings, zero chemicals and completely glue free for easy recyclability. The

brand proudly partners with British Wool to ensure these mattresses are also fully traceable meaning for the first time, consumers can use a QR code to trace the wool used in their mattresses back to the exact farm – via the brand’s first-to-market certification, Wool ID.

Chris Tattersall, Managing Director of Woolroom and Sleep Environment Expert, comments: “With many people setting themselves new year’s resolutions, we are encouraging people to invest in their sleep. We spend on average one third of our life asleep, so it is really important to create a ‘clean sleep’ and personalised sanctuary that can benefit your overall health and wellness. We hope these new 30 and 60 night sleep trials will give many people the confidence to see just how e ective wool bedding can have on their sleep in 2023.”

Woolroom is the UK’s leading wool bedding specialist committed to helping achieve a natural night’s clean sleep. Through this commitment, Woolroom is dedicated to raising awareness of the holistic sleep environment, which is the key to attaining a good night’s sleep and spotlight the natural benefits of wool as the only sustainable, temperature regulating, hypoallergenic and chemical free bedding fibre solution.

bed, one that would mimic the feeling of weightlessness he had had on the heather. This quest took thousands of hours and a partnership with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden. The final result is Carpe Diem Beds' patented Contour Pocket System, which has a unique cushioning ability. It gently yields and supports at the same time, instantly moulding to your body’s contours and changing with your every movement. You can feel the mattress embrace your hips and shoulders while gently supporting your lumbar and waist. Your spine is relieved of tension, and your muscles can finally relax. The sensation is unique: almost weightless and quite unlike most standard mattresses. Just like lying on a bed of heather on the cli s by the Swedish sea, in fact.

SLEEP SECRETS

The perfect night’s sleep is the holy grail of life. The quality of our sleep defines our day – and a good night will always lead to happier, more productive and successful waking hours. But how to achieve it? Most important is, of course, the bed itself.

Swedish bed company Carpe Diem Beds was founded 26 year ago by chiropractor Börje Thuleskär, a firm believer in the importance of sleep for body and mind. He sought out the best mattress on the market, but wasn’t impressed by it and one day fell asleep on a bed of heather by the sea in Sweden – where he realised that nature contoured to his body far more than any bed ever had. This led him to embark on a quest to build the perfect

At Carpe Diem Beds showroom on Wigmore Street, visitors can experience the company’s ethos first hand. Its innovative approach is visible on their website, where an interactive bed configurator introduces the available options, revealing how each bed can be matched with personal preferences. Each bed is customisable in size, finish and fabrics. Top of the range is Vindö, the most innovative adjustable bed that o ers automatic lumbar and neck support, with head and foot rests that can be lowered or raised to suit your needs. It has a variety of massage functions that can be controlled via an app, as well as built in under-bed lighting.

Skaftö is Carpe Diem Beds’ most exclusive continental bed and its moveable midsection can be adjusted, with built-in back support customised by remote control.

There’s no better single route to wellbeing for body and soul than rest and sleep, and that’s why a Carpe Diem bed is a longterm investment in your overall health.

Oliver Bootmann, VP Brand of Carpe Diem Beds, says: “Why compromise when you don’t have to? Beds can and should soothe both the body and the soul.”

The results speak for themselves. After a 12-week independent clinical trial, 84% of participants noticed increased immunity and emotional balance, 92% noticed significant improvements in the condition of skin, hair and nails, while 84% felt improved energy. And while most users see the benefits within weeks, Lumity recommends a minimum commitment of 12 weeks to see the best results. With continued use, these benefits are sustained, resulting in overall improved energy levels, more youthful skin, a stronger immune system and a new, happier balance.

cravings or temptations. You may find it easier to resist if you remove some alcohol from your home and reduce the amount of time you spend in places where alcohol is in abundance, such as pubs. Try fun activities such as bowling and crazy golf which you’ll be keeping busy and active.

4 MONITOR CONSUMPTION

One of the best things you can do to help you achieve your goals is to track your progress by monitoring how much you are drinking with a diary. This will also help you understand what you’ve learnt as you go through the process of changing habits. Make a note of what drinks you’ve consumed, why you drank them and how it made you feel.

5 HAVE ‘FUN’ PLANS FOR THE MORNING AFTER

When you're hungover, it's hard to get motivated to do much of anything. When you feel like you have a pounding headache and your stomach is doing somersaults, you just want to lay low. If you have fun plans the morning after a night out, it will be easier to keep yourself from going overboard and drinking too much.

6 WATCH FOR PEER PRESSURE

Ruari Fairbairns

of One Year No Beer shares his 7 tips to curb your drinking habits this month

1 THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ENJOY

There are a lot of reasons to drink. It’s cold outside, or you're celebrating a special occasion.

At the end of a long work week, a cold beer or glass of wine can be the perfect way to relax. However, if you find yourself drinking more than you want, or need to fit in with your social circle or satisfy your own habits, you should make an e ort to have sober days. Changing up your routine can help you pay more attention to how much, and what kind of drinks you consume.

2 CONSIDER HERBAL TEAS IN THE EVENINGS

Herbal teas are a great alternative to alcohol in the winter when the temperatures fall. You'll be doing your health a favour by replacing evening alcoholic beverages with herbal teas. Unlike alcohol, most of them won't make you feel bloated, spaced out, or tipsy but instead will help you unwind at night.

3 REMOVE TEMPTATION

When you’re trying to cut down on your drinking, it can be all too easy to give in to

You shouldn’t feel obligated to drink just because others are. You don't have to drink to fit in with a group and you should avoid people who try to make you drink when you don't want to. Explain your reasoning why and ask for support in your choice. Practice assertiveness, saying no and in the worst case, leaving situations you feel uncomfortable in.

7 DRINK SLOWLY

When you do drink, try to drink at a slower pace. By taking your time, the alcohol will be less likely to go to your head and you’ll have a more memorable night. Have water in between your drinks to keep hydrated throughout the night. Also, if you’re socialising outside, you will end up saving money by savouring each drink you buy and curbing your consumption.

Step OUT

Start the new year with sure-footed confidence

If one of your new year's resolutions was to introduce new healthy and fulfilling habits into your life, the new brand Callen Olive is the daily motivation you need to stick to it. Here, founder, multi-award-winning podiatrist, London-born Maggie Trevillion reveals why Callen Olive is more than just another luxury skincare for legs and feet but a new concept to help take greater care of the most neglected parts of our body.

WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE CALLEN OLIVE?

Having run Walk This Way Podiatry for over ten years, it saddens me how many people su er from foot shame. Day in and day out, we deal with frustrated clients who feel ashamed of baring their legs and feet due to embarrassing conditions such as fungal nails, verrucas, or dry, cracked skin. Some of them wait months before seeking help, so by the time we see them, the condition has deteriorated, making treatments more challenging. It's evident that the feet are one of the most underrated parts of the body. Unless there is a medical or cosmetic need, most people do not bother to have them regularly checked as they do with their teeth, for example. But also, I felt there

was a big gap in the market for products that actually work. With Callen Olive, I want to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining our feet in top condition.

WHAT MAKES CALLEN OLIVE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PODIATRY SKINCARE BRANDS?

Callen Olive combines the latest advancements in cosmetic science, medical podiatry expertise and the luxurious feel of premium beauty products. Over the last four years, I have worked closely with one of the top cosmetic manufacturers in the UK to develop a range that contains the highest grade of naturally derived ingredients, responsibly sourced worldwide. Every formulation targets the particular needs of the legs and feet skin to deliver instant results.

HAVE YOU GOT A FAVOURITE PRODUCT?

Not really! I just can't pick one; it's like favouring one of your children. However,

when push comes to shove, I will choose Foot Sole & Heel Saviour Balm and the Deep Nourishing and Restorative Leg & Foot Serum. I love how they leave the legs and feet skin feeling radiant, velvety soft, and looking plumper and younger. They're both essential in a beauty bag to maintain the skin hydrated.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR HEALTHY FEET?

For me, it's all about discipline and paying the feet equal attention to the face or hair. So, I always advise making leg and foot care part of one's daily self-care ritual. My top tips are:

• Make sure to moisturise your legs and feet daily after showering or bathing.

• Exfoliate the legs and feet at least twice weekly to eliminate the skin's dead cells and promote new ones.

• Remove the excess dry skin on the heels with a foot file or emery board once a week to prevent it from building up and cracking.

• If you do paint your toenails, always use a basecoat to prevent them from discolouring. And make sure you give them some breathing space between pedicures to repair themselves from the chemicals in nail polishes.

ARE YOU READY FOR

SKI SEASON

How Emsculpt Neo can help you get ski fit

Anyone who has booked a ski trip this year will know that there is preparation to be done. The best way to make the most of your ski holiday and prevent injury on the slopes is to get in shape before you go. Muscle strengthening technologies can play an important role with the dual purpose of improving your performance and protecting your joints - whether on the ski slopes, the tennis court or the golf course.

Dr Kim discusses a high intensity focused electromagnetic muscle toning technology (HIFEM) that could boost your fitness regime.

BTL EMSCULPT NEO

Multi-award winning BTL Emsculpt Neo builds on legacy of its much-loved predecessor by combining two technologies - radiofrequency and powerful muscle toning. It is the first non-invasive device designed to eliminate fat cells and build muscle by a unique combination of

radiofrequency heat and HIFEM delivered together, stimulating muscle tissue to an intensity that wouldn’t be possible during your regular workout. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated an average of 25% increase in muscle and 30% decrease in fat after a course of BTL Emsculpt Neo treatments.

HOW DOES IT HELP WITH GETTING SKI FIT?

Not only is Emsculpt Neo ideal to help you fit into the more flattering styles of ski wear, but for anyone who has struggled with their knees for the first few days of a ski trip, Emsculpt Neo has the advantage of being able to strengthen your thigh and calf muscles to provide support and protection against injury. In addition, you can improve your overall core stability through delivery of supramaximal contractions to your abdominal and gluteal muscles enabling higher intensity workouts. A BTL Emsculpt Neo treatment simulates the e ect of 20 000 sit-ups or gluteal squats in a single 30-minute session.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER HEALTH BENEFITS OF EMSCULPT NEO?

Emsculpt Neo is a powerful body sculpting treatment, but not only does it help your clothes fit better, it also has the massive benefit of reducing visceral fat – the inflammatory fat that sits around your organs that drives insulin resistance and an increased risk of chronic ill-health. Emsculpt Neo is also used to help treat diastasis, or separation of abdominal muscles after pregnancy or weight gain, with around 19% improvement.

WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE DURING A TREATMENT?

During your Emsculpt Neo treatment you can expect to feel a warm sensation in the treated area, along with muscle contractions that gradually intensify. Because of the way the muscle pulse patterns work, the treatment feels like an intense workout, but is not painful and is adjusted to your comfort level. Your body rapidly metabolises fat for fuel for this workout as well as inducing a process which permanently destroys fat cells. The addition of radiofrequency in the Emsculpt Neo enables greater fat reduction, muscle toning and skin tightening.

What made fashion journalist Deborah Brett change career for a new life in ceramics? Absolutely meets her
DEBORAH BRETT IN HER GARDEN STUDIO

A It was something that was percolating in my mind for about 10 years or so – but I think that when you’re really successful at something and also you do it really well, then leaving that comfort of something that feels quite safe can be tricky. My fashion life is wonderful and I've had the most brilliant career over 25 years and it’s very enticing. I kept on trying to leave and it kept on pulling me back in. I’ve still got my little toe dipped into the fashion pond – I don’t know whether I could leave it completely.

Q And why ceramics?

A One of the reasons was that I needed a new challenge. I went to St Martins and studied fashion design and then from there I went into journalism, so I wanted to learn again. When you’re older you know how to do that – and I wanted to really immerse myself in it before I even decided

what I want to do with it. So I spent six years just learning everything I could while still having a job (and three kids). The transition’s been really slow but I haven’t wanted to rush it. Funnily enough, when I was at school there were things that I was really passionate about and one of them was my pottery class – I did it twice a week but it wasn’t really obvious to me that it could be a career. When we had our career talks it was all about being a lawyer or a teacher. Now, creativity and ingenuity and entrepreneurship are really lauded and we’re allowed to do things that are di erent. It used to be that people stayed in their careers, their lives, their cities – but now we’re allowed to move.

Q So how did you start?

A My mother-in-law bought me a course for my birthday. It was local and on a Monday. I got the bug immediately and remembered what I’d loved so much. I spent time really refining the technique, then I bought another course, and then another one that was maybe a bit more challenging, then an evening one, then a whole day and eventually I did a Level 3 BTEC at my local adult education centre. That took one day a week, plus a day in the studio and I still did three days in my fashion job. I did that for a year, then I graduated and ended up doing a collaboration with lovely boutique hotel Thyme, who got in touch wanting me to do a collection based on their linen. It snowballed from there.

Q How would you define your style?

A It’s hard to find out what you want to do, so I believe in trying everything. During all my courses we really did everything – throwing, slipcasting, slab-building, handbuilding, mould-building, glazing. It’s a little bit reflective of what I’m like in my fashion career, because while most people are exclusively a writer or a stylist or a designer, when I was at The Times as deputy fashion editor, I wrote about fashion and also interiors but I also did the fashion shoots. When I moved to magazines I also did the beauty shoots and the celebrity covers,

so I am someone who loves a lot of things and the same can be said for my ceramics. My favourite things are hand building and glazing. I love the chemistry behind making my own glazes and the reactive process. It is fascinating but also quite daunting and scary because of the unpredictability of it. I think if I only could do one thing I’d feel sad and a bit stifled. A lot of my pieces are a mixture of thrown and hand built and then I douse them in crazy glazes. It’s a bit of a mixture.

Q Your new collection of tableware uses a bubble technique. Tell us about that. A Bubble technique is quite well known and looks relatively simple, but it has a layer of complexity underneath it. I spent a year figuring out how to make it work. It’s a process of what kind of clay and how you apply the glaze and when you fire it and how you fire it –there are lots of di erent elements. Then you throw on cobalt, which is really vivid. I branched out and tried green and pink, though pink took me two years because it just behaves di erently. The thing that I love about bubble glaze is the hand application, the fact that it comes from me blowing the bubbles and my breath. I call them flow bowls because they move

in the firing. Porcelain is very reactive to the heat: it remembers its shape and sometimes returns to it. So combine that fluidity with a glaze that you’re moving across the surface with your breath and I see it as reflective of the movement and unpredictability in life. So that’s the nub of my flow collection. I use a matt glaze in my personal pieces, with a gild edge, and in my tableware collection that’s a glossy transparent glaze so it’s food and dishwasher safe, and slightly more robust. I don’t use a lustre, so you can put it in the dishwasher; although they are

decorative they are also really practical and that’s the di erence between my bespoke and my personal pieces.

You’ve put it into production in Stoke on Trent.

A I feel really passionate about pieces being handmade. I think you can really feel the energy from them, the energy is transmitted. They’re made through slipcasting: I make the prototype and then it is hand-finished and handglazed. I taught three lovely women in Stoke how to do the bubble technique, so although the shapes are uniform and made from the same mould, each piece is individual because they’re finished by hand. I love supporting UK artisans and keeping that industry

going is really important to me.

It was exciting and really wonderful to meet a factory that was very open to my techniques and my shapes and forms, which are not symmetrical and not easy to replicate. They have dips and fingerprints and my hand markings are kept into the pieces so that I’m part of the piece, which is really important to me.

Q Where do you work?

A I have my own garden studio – it’s a lockdown baby. I spent lockdown in my kitchen making bowls and my husband got tired of the mess. It’s heaven, I work there and do my bespoke pieces and glaze experimenting and all of what I call the fun stu .

Q What are you working on now?

A I’m working on a couple of projects at the moment, one is a range of serveware for a private members club in mayfair, a special colour for their pantry, they have a gorgeous marble platter and they want lot of serving platters and cake stands; I’m making bespoke reactive glazes for them. I’m also developing new pieces for my own collection, so there’s a lot of talking to customers and working out what they want to have on their tables.

“Some people are opposed to painting wood, whether it’s in the shape of furniture, doors or fireplaces. I am not one of those people”

Paint is accessible and easily achievable, a tool that anyone can use with zero experience or training and where the impact far outweighs the cost and time spent. Leaving aside the usual coat of paint on the walls, there are myriad ways to update your home using this versatile medium.

First of all, almost anything can be painted. Metal, wood, tile, ceramics, floors, ceilings – there is likely to be a suitable paint product for it. There are many options for paints that are less harmful for both you and the environment, but my (admittedly unscientific) opinion is that using any paint to update a piece of furniture that would otherwise get dumped must surely outweigh the negatives. Some people are opposed to painting wood, whether it’s in the shape of furniture, doors or fireplaces. I am not one of those people. I certainly wouldn’t suggest coating a classic Ercol chair in high gloss, but there is so much brown furniture out there and charity shops and online marketplaces

are brimming with tired wooden chairs and tables of no particularly distinguished origin that can enjoy a whole new life with a lick of paint. Not everyone loves the look of bare wood, and for them there is paint.

I have a few favourite creative updates with paint. Painting old or unattractive radiators the same colour as the walls can make them disappear, while a contrasting colour will make them stand out. Paint internal doors with a pop of colour to make a statement, or link the colour palette of a series of adjoining rooms and hallways, so that the long view tells a story as well the room itself. If you’re feeling artistic, think about adding a border where the wall meets the ceiling or paint woodwork/trim a contrasting colour. Paint a panel of colour on the wall to create an interesting backdrop for a piece of art or a shelf. Paint is your go-to for instant impact, whatever your skill level.

How Laura Marino designed an apartment with inspiration taken

from

Slim Arons’ photography, Memphis design and 1980s nostalgia

104 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Inspired by the glamorous photography of Slim Aarons – in particular, Joan Collins Relaxes – Laura Marino of Studio L set out to create its modern-day reinterpretation while blending her nostalgic love of 80s decor in a new apartment titled That’s Amoire. Boutique central London development Westminster Fire Station’s latest completed apartment is a duplex in the new Station House building, which seamlessly adjoins the original Edwardian Fire Station. The development by Alchemi Group, with architecture by OpenStudio Architects, has just 17 apartments and o ers distinctive and highly imaginative interiors.

With three bedrooms, the duplex apartment is one of the development’s largest homes. Inside, Studio L, London has created an interior concept that blends references of Palm Beach/Miami in the 1980s with a 50s/60s Hollywood Regency aesthetic. Laura Marino, Creative Director of Studio L, is inspired by singular pieces of music, artwork, fashion, and photography. In this apartment, she credits the Kodachrome photography of Slim Aarons, recalling glamourous golden eras of 'beautiful people, doing beautiful things in fantastical settings' as the main source of inspiration. Aarons’ photo Joan Collins Relaxes is the starting point for the overall look and feel of the apartment, rounded out by two further Aaron photos hung within it.

“I wanted to draw out a sense of luxury for this apartment and make the decor surprising and exciting so that people want to journey through to see the entire home, so we graduated the décor's impact along the way. Initially, I wanted to infuse a sense of 80s nostalgia and pull from my childhood with references to Memphis Design, colour blocking, pastels and neon with ditsy florals, oriental decor, and stylised graphics.

Then came the incorporation of another favourite era of mine - Hollywood Regency of the 50s and 60s. I was drawn to Aarons’ photo of Joan Collins lounging in her monochromatic pastel pink bedroom from the late 50s and was determined to recreate a version of that photo for today. We used a stunning moiré fabric in a similar powder pink in one of the duplex bedrooms, evoking the sense of luxury seen in the original photo.'

“Slim Aarons’ photo is the starting point for the overall look and feel of the apartment”

The duplex apartment sits in a private position, accessed directly o the development's peaceful residents' courtyard, formerly used as the Fire Station's engine turning circle. Laura wanted to emphasise this sense of exclusivity, anticipation, and privacy in her choice of furnishings and materials and comments: "I used low-level table lighting, reflective surfaces and luxe textiles to help create a hushed, encompassing ambience that gives a subtly sexy feel, especially in the evening".

Studio L, London has also designed the interiors of two other show homes with distinct personalities within Westminster Fire Station (So Fresh, So Clean and Farmhouse in the City). Both showcase Laura's ability to create wholly di erent interior décor personalities, eschewing a signature style in favour of designing stylistically individual spaces.

All apartments within Westminster Fire Station o er bespoke kitchen cabinetry and ironmongery and design details that reference the old fire station’s characteristics, including herringbone wooden flooring and ceramic wall tiles.

Developed by Alchemi Group and Far East Orchard Limited, Westminster Fire Station sits in an enviably central location, in the heart of London’s bustling Victoria neighbourhood. Future homeowners will also have an on-site restaurant on their doorstep, as well as 24-hour concierge and complimentary 10-year Zip Car membership. cbreresidential.com

FIT RIGHT IN

Looking to get in shape this year? Then stay at home

Exercising has become very di erent in the past few years. While people hoping to get in shape once had to drag themselves to a crowded gym every morning or battle with the elements during their weekend bike ride, you can now get a productive workout from the comfort of your own home.

The technology behind workout streams and virtual classes has been available for years now, but the pandemic and lockdowns forced people to properly utilise it at last. Thousands of people joined Joe Wicks’ virtual PE lessons each morning, whilst others splurged on Peloton bikes or similar equipment to get in shape without stepping outdoors.

There are many benefits to exercising at home. It saves time and money by removing the need to travel to a gym. It makes working out during lunch breaks much

easier for people who work from home. It’s also great for people at the start of their self-improvement journey who might not yet feel comfortable exercising in front of others.

So, what do you need to get a good home workout session in? Obviously, some equipment is a must, so don’t be afraid of splashing out on a few dumbbells. Exercise bikes have also developed significantly in the last decade, now often being equipped with a screen to easily join virtual classes. But the real key to getting your body in shape is a fast and reliable broadband connection.

Virtual classes and online workouts rely heavily on following exact instructions to make sure you keep in time with the rest of the class. Therefore, any sort of lag or drop out can drastically impact your session. No one wants to be halfway through a downward dog while the rest of the yoga class is already on to the tree pose.

The strong connection you get with high-speed broadband is also important, so

you can hear the words of your instructor clearly at all times. Not to mention the fact that many virtual exercise classes come with a price tag, so you want to be getting your money’s worth by enjoying them in high visual and audio quality.

The best way to guarantee a solid home workout is to ensure you have a Full Fibre broadband connection, like that o ered by Swish Fibre. Swish provides the UK’s fastest broadband (see swishfibre.com for details), meaning you won’t have to worry about poor connection or dropouts while you’re getting a sweat on. The massive bandwidth of Swish also means that no matter how many people in your home are using the internet at once, there won’t be any slowdown.

Head over to swishfibre.com/absolutely and see how faster broadband can help you smash your fitness goals for 2023

CLOVER GORDES TERRASSE

Visiting Provence and the Cote D’Azur – a glamorous couple if ever there was one –means embarking on an incredible journey. It's a route well-travelled but as soon as you arrive you are reminded why it is loved by foodies, artists and the smart set alike. Here we have a dreamy world of gorgeous scenery, gourmet cuisine and innate glamour. The region perfectly illustrates that magical and uniquely French je ne sais quoi – it is a holiday hotspot unlike anywhere else. Hills abound with olive groves, cypress trees and wildflowers, lavish fields of lavender and wild herbs scent the air, and of course, when you travel high season there are beautiful beaches for the ultimate in seaside posing. Our two-centre South of France odyssey begins at Airelles Gordes La Bastide. This Provencal gem, around 90 minutes’ drive from Marseille, is precipitously moulded into the cli side in the picturesque village of Gordes. From the minute we step into the stylish reception, our eyes are drawn to the breathtaking views across the valleys and hills of the Luberon. Designed over many levels to make the most of those views, the hotel is a joy to explore, with plenty of nooks and crannies – and delightful surprises around every corner.

Our sumptuous room boasts a massive bed as the centrepiece, the most luxurious of bathrooms with enormous shower, and a private terrace – with valley views, naturally. Time to settle into our idyllic Provencal lifestyle. Our days start with a lavish breakfast spread and are peppered with heavenly meals at the hotel’s four restaurants. We amble along ancient, cobbled streets for lunch at La Bastide de Pierres on the village square. We sip incredible local wines and inventive cocktails at Clover Gordes before tucking into fabulous signature dishes from chef Jean-Francois Piege. Balmy alfresco evenings begin with decadent cocktails and lead to more gastronomic adventures, including classic French fare at L’Orangerie and Asian delights at LE TIGrr.

In between feasting, we explore the beguiling village (don’t miss the market on Tuesdays), inhale that fragrant Provencal air along hiking trails and soak up the sun and valley vistas poolside. We visit the serenity of nearby Chateau d’Estoublon for olive oil and rosé tasting before working o some of those calories in the heated indoor pool and state-ofthe-art fitness centre. To complete the perfect stay, we have the most indulgent of facials in the haven that is the hotel's Sisley Spa. Feeling soothed and revived, we move on from Airelles Gordes La Bastide, taking the scenic route to Saint Tropez for our stay at Chateau de la Messardiere, a sister property in the Airelles group. This historic estate had a glamorous transformation in 2019 and is spread over more than 12 hectares of glorious

gardens, with jasmine, honeysuckle and roses tumbling from the terraces and the azure sea twinkling in the distance. We love our opulent room with its gigantic bed, comfortable seating area, sensational bathroom and minibar stocked with tempting delicacies –there’s no holding back on the luxury here.

We while away sunny hours on our private terrace, with the lap pool and its loungers a short and aromatic stroll away. Wandering happily around the lush, extensive grounds, we spend lazy days playing pétanque or relaxing poolside and visit the stunning spa with its indulgent Valmont treatments, sparkling indoor pool, sauna and hammam. Naturally, we can't resist visiting nearby St

Tropez. Actress and icon Brigitte Bardot arrived here in 1956 to shoot And God Created Woman and fell in love with the place. Her influence helped to transform a rustic fishing village into today’s cosmopolitan playground and hangout for the rich and famous.

The still charming harbour, now populated with superyachts and super-beautiful people and lined with tempting cafes, remains enticing. We browse some of the designer shops before continuing our gastronomic journey with lunch. We head to Pan Dei Palais (also part of the prestigious Airelles stable) in the centre of town for authentic Greek dishes at the poolside oasis of Cookoovaya. It includes the very best taramasalata we’ve ever tasted.

There’s nothing but the best food to discover back at our St Tropez home. From the vast and incredible breakfast o ering to Asian-inspired delights at Matsuhisa and Provencal cuisine bursting with local flavours at L'Auberge des Maures, dining at Chateau de la Messardiere is a journey through the world’s finest food without the e ort of leaving our well-appointed hotel. And everywhere is designed to make the most of those fabulous all-round views for al fresco dining at its finest.

We sample myriad dishes and absorb every bit of the experience – we want to hold on to the Airelles magic. This part of France is justly celebrated and, while the sleepy fishing villages of Bardot's day are long gone, we have found a classic piece of paradise. And the heady combination of food, views and glamour make this a journey to savour long after we return home.

Greek-Isle UTOPIA

Finding paradise in the Aegean's sunniest island: Rhodes

124 ABSOLUTELY magazines

ur descent into the Greek island of Rhodes took our breath away as the dramatic rugged coastline, turquoise sea and beckoning beaches unfolded beneath us. We stepped out into the warmth and dazzling blue of a perfect island day and inhaled the sweet herb-scented summer air; we had landed in paradise. Paradise with a long and fascinating history, as we were soon to discover.

Rhodes is by far the largest and historically most important of the Dodecanese islands. According to legend, it all started when Zeus divided the earth among the gods after victory against the Giants. Helios, the God of the Sun, was somehow overlooked in this process. He pleaded with Zeus that the next land to appear from the sea should be his, and Rhodes was born when a verdant island emerged from the depths. Overwhelmed

Oby happiness, Helios bathed it with his radiance as only the God of the Sun could, making the Island of the Sun forever one of the sunniest places in the Aegean. The perfect destination for a fabulous getaway.

We were headed for the ultra allinclusive adults-only Lindos Village in the south of the island, a short drive from the airport through verdant valleys and abundant olive orchards. Laid across the top of the hill overlooking the captivating sparkle of the azure bay, Lindos Village is the perfect place to absorb the warmth of this historic island. Smiling faces and chilled refreshments welcomed us before we were shown to our spacious, relaxed and comfortable room and its large balcony with more fabulous Aegean views.

The charming white-washed resort is festooned with bougainvillaea in vibrant shades of pink and purple and strategically designed to take advantage of those inspirational views no matter where you are. Days started with a tasty bu et breakfast on the terrace at Ambrosia. Food is undoubtedly a

Our favourite venues were Gia Ouzaki, for its Greek cuisine with the tastiest of dips and freshest of fish and sweet, juicy tomatoes to dream of - Greek salads have never tasted so good. We also loved Ginger Root for magical dinners poolside under the twinkle of fairy lights with an incredible selection of Asian cuisine ranging from sushi to spicy curries.

In between sampling delicious treats, we whiled away sunshine days sipping exotic cocktails and the local Mythos beer on our pool loungers (the joy of all-inclusive) or hopping into the golf buggy, heading down the hill to chill on the beach and take a dip in tempting balmy waters. We enjoyed rejuvenating massages in the peace of the stylish spa and relaxed reading time in many shaded corners.

We visited historic Lindos Town, a short drive away. Said to be founded in the 10th century BC, its imposing medieval Acropolis dominates the skyline with its ancient grandeur and aweinspiring views. Picturesque sugar-cubelike houses pepper the slopes leading up to the town's quaintness with its winding lanes and pebble-paved courtyards packed with shops and charming rooftop restaurants. The beachside bars and eateries beckon, and it's the place to take to the sea for an invigorating sail, snorkel, and swim in the balmy blue. We also explored Rhodes Town, a 45-minute drive away, with the prettiest of labyrinthine streets, myriad shopping opportunities and incredible history. The town was home to the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue of Helios himself erected in 280BC, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Sadly it collapsed during the earthquake of 226BC. Though Helios’ legacy undoubtedly lives on in the warmth and the sunshine he bestowed on this beautiful island of many faces.

TROPICAL ISLAND

Delights

A private paradise at St Lucia's luxurious Sugar Beach Resort

The Eastern Caribbean island of St Lucia astounds with its beauty. From the splendour of lush rainforests, tumbling waterfalls and scenic hills in the interior to the sparkling, crystal-clear turquoise sea lapping onto many hidden beaches, nature has been extremely generous to the tropical paradise. So much so that it feels like the scenery had been painted on, such is its perfection.

The island’s original capital, Soufriere, was colonised by the French and has a charming collection of brightly coloured houses and a bustling harbour. The area is home to many old plantations, some of which have been converted into uber-luxury resorts. Like our breathtaking destination: Sugar Beach Resort.

Our resort is set on 100 acres of lush rainforest on an 18th-century sugar plantation site. Dreamy, luxury villas are scattered through the jungle in perfect privacy, tumbling down the hill to the stunning white sandy beach framed by the majesty of the pitons (named Gros and Petit though there’s not much di erence in their sizes), a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. These magnificent towering peaks are a powerful symbol of St Lucia - there’s even a (deliciously refreshing) beer named after them.

On entering our one-bedroom, plantation-style villa, our eyes were immediately drawn outside by the captivating view from our expansive private terrace. Gros Piton loomed large to the right, and there were clear views across our private plunge pool and verdant tropical gardens towards the twinkle of the Caribbean Sea below. We spent much of our time on this terrace soaking

up the warmth of the tropical sun, sipping on cocktails (the makings for rum punch along with the recipe were waiting for us in our living room) and taking in those fabulous views. The comfiest sun loungers were placed for easy access to the pool.

Inside, our villa was just as spectacular with high ceilings, whitewashed furniture and floor-to-ceiling doors. A comfortable lounge area led into the enormous bedroom dominated by a four-poster bed. Next door was an ample walk-in closet and well-stocked mini bar. An incredible bathroom completed the picture of absolute indulgence with its roll-top bath, massive double basins and the most

enormous walk-in shower we’ve ever seen. Just heavenly. We felt like we had claimed our little piece of paradise - and we didn’t have to share it with anyone; our villa was the perfect private haven. We were lulled to sleep by a constant chorus of frogs and woke up to the trilling of birdsong welcoming in the light of each new day, dream-like Sugar Beach days.

We were handed a mobile phone at in-room check-in (with just one number programmed) to contact our personal butler, who was on hand 24 hours a day to help with whatever we desired. For organising a shuttle to the beach, breakfast in our room, or even helping to rescue a spider (a baby

tarantula) from our bath, our butler was there at the touch of a button. Friendly, e cient service is the only way at Sugar Beach. All the resort’s facilities are at the bottom of the hill, and the incredible drivers arrived in minutes to transport us there with smiles.

The beach has plenty of luxurious loungers in the shade of umbrellas and floating pods in the sea for relaxation and bedside service. There’s also a large pool next to the beach if you’d rather avoid sandy feet. The pier provides the perfect stepping-o point for waterskiing or boat rides around the coastline, which we loved - taking in the views of the spectacular Pitons from a di erent angle, checking out the secret bat caves in the rocks, and stopping for an impromptu dip in the balmy blueness.

Back on shore, it’s time for lunch - and the dining is simply stupendous. There are five restaurants with di erent personalities and varied menus. Our standout favourite was The Great Room, with its delightful fine dining menu. We feasted on fresh oysters, juicy tomahawk steaks, delicately sweet sole, and melt-in-the-mouth vegetables accompanied by excellent French wines. The best food in the whole of the Caribbean? Quite possibly.

The island has plenty of delights to discover. There’s scuba diving, snorkeling and hiking, and even climbing the Gros Piton for a di erent view of paradise. We visited the sulphur springs and indulged in a mud bath in their magical and supposed youth-reviving waters, said to detoxify the body and heal skin complaints.

On our return, we headed for the Rainforest Spa, its treatment rooms built on stilts deep within the jungle and connected by an intricate network of bridges. With its range of signature treatments, including the most fragrant of invigorating facials enjoyed in total serenity, it’s the spa that dreams are made of. Just as we should have expected in the haven of our St Lucian tropical paradise

Managing CHANGE

children’s lives

As a parent and a teacher who has been part of key rites of passage in a child’s life, I recognise the significance of ‘liminal states’ – those moments where a parent and child stand on a threshold of a new start or transition. These include beginning school (that snapshot of the first day), moving to secondary school and choosing GCSEs and A levels.

Change is transformative and key to ongoing development. We want each of our girls to successfully navigate a period of flux and emerge secure and happy in their new phase. They should enjoy coming to school, feel known and valued within their community and energised by the change and the new possibilities this brings. The prospect can be more anxiety-inducing than the reality, so encouragement and preparation are key. For our 4+ and 11+ entrants at Sydenham High, we are firm believers in plenty of visits and taster and familiarisation sessions.

From something as simple as giving a child the opportunity to inhabit a new space and create the memory of a positive experience to our more structured induction programmes (which work to develop ‘tool kits’ to help each individual manage their experience) we are committed to devoting the time and attention needed.

Communication with home is equally important – little things can feel big during moments of change. Behind the cries for independence, older teenagers equally need support – sometimes more, in fact,

as they prepare to make decisions which can be seen as more definitive. Solid foundations are built on dedicated career advice and one-to-one discussions of the academic options. Taster lessons and research are key for GCSE and A level, to avoid decisions based around short-lived criteria. An informed choice provides an increased sense of control over potential pathways and furthers self-belief. I believe in the importance of developing flexible and varied skillsets to prepare for the changing world of employment ahead.

Our bespoke sixth form enrichment programme includes building professional skills and voluntary work, as well as academic electives and EPQs to broaden critical perspectives and prepare for the transition to higher education or the world beyond. These are complemented by many developmental opportunities o ered through the GDST network to connect pupils with a network of alumnae.

In addition to the benefits of educating our girls all the way from aged 4 to 18, I value ongoing relationships which recognise the character and aspirations of each girl and their development through childhood and adolescence to adulthood at their own pace, able to learn from mistakes and make

changes. Committed, regular connections between all the sections of our school see pupils supported through academic and personal journeys by their ‘big sisters’ as well as sta , fostering the inner strength to be bold in their voyage of discovery.

Crossing liminal spaces can be extremely exciting and fill us with a sense of mastery, but we recognise that this can also feel unknown and daunting.

Like Tennyson’s poetic vision of Ulysses standing on the shore of the untravelled world, and yearning for the “gleaming” opportunity, I see these as moments to be seized, but always fully supported.

SENIOR TRANSITION

Making the choice and managing the entrance to senior school can be complex for parents familiar with the UK system – even more so for families who are moving (or returning) to the UK. The first important step is not to panic. Your priority should be to find a fantastic school for your children – and the good news is there are plenty of excellent choices. A good school will not only actively prepare your child academically and emotionally for every transition but will also support your family throughout the educational journey. Here’s a checklist of areas we suggest parents focus on.

Decide priorities

Do you prefer a single sex environment or a co-educational one? Perhaps you are open to all. Are you looking for a boarding school or a day school? While traditionally there was a tendency to look at the league tables and start from there, what is equally if not more important is the ‘value added’. This is a great measure of a school’s determination and ability to get the best out of children and help them to thrive. Decide what values are important to your family. This is particularly important at a boarding school, as your child will spend a great deal of time there and the values and ethos should replicate your own.

Carry out research

While nothing quite compares to visiting a school in person, since the pandemic – when schools couldn’t host physical visits – many o er website tours that give great insights into what the school is all about. The best capture the life of a school. This is useful starting point to focus your search and set of criteria before narrowing down. Visiting schools in person (or via oneto-one virtual appointments if physical visits are impossible) is the next logical step. This will provide a clearer sense of the atmosphere and culture at the school. It’s also an opportunity to meet key members of sta who will tell you more about the

workings of school life there. It’s a good idea to have questions prepared in advance – you want to maximise your session and leave feeling satisfied that any queries have been addressed.

Criteria can and do change...

Many parents I see will have an idea of the type of education or school they envisage for their child. Sometimes this is based on their own experiences, or it might be based on what they have heard. Sometimes it is purely down to the stats. But education has moved on since we were at school, and it is important to stay open-minded – the first and foremost priority is to find a senior school where your child will thrive, not simply survive.

It is very common for families to end their search in a very di erent place to where they started. I have parents who only wanted a day school but ended up pursuing a boarding route and families who took a risk on a newer school versus more established ones. Time and again, parents will say: ‘we never thought to consider that school, but it turned out to be exactly what we were looking for’.

Teaching

I’m sure every teacher has at least one student who always puts their hand up in class, consistently impresses with his/her answers, demonstrates excellent subject knowledge in conversations outside of lessons, yet still secures average grades. By the same token, parents might see their child work incredibly diligently at home and wonder why they are still sitting on C grades.

One of the biggest reasons for this academic plateau is because students aren’t focusing enough attention on exam technique. The days of obtaining the best grades by regurgitating accurate knowledge are long gone. As I have told students hundreds of times, the technical demands of examination papers on students today are greater than when I was at school. Students must first be equipped with the understanding to know exactly how to decode exam questions (the vast majority of which at GCSE and A level would ba e most adults). Once students have done that, the second task is always to be clear on exactly how to present knowledge and understanding in a way that is acceptable and credit worthy to examiners – in other words, using the right technique.

Like all challenging processes – especially ones carried out under time pressures and with genuinely life-changing consequences – a person can only excel if there is explicit and regular emphasis on these skills and if opportunities to try out these skills are

seized. These things considered, here are some points for students and parents to consider in deciding if exam technique is up to scratch.

First up, are you familiar with the range of command words in exam questions?

Secondly, do you also understand what you are being assessed on for each question and how marks are distributed? Thirdly, what are the best sentence starters for the di erent parts of an essay and how can you signpost to examiners that you are hitting the di erent assessment objectives? Finally, if there is a source in the exam question, what is the best way to use it in the answer?

Deep subject knowledge fused with impeccable exam technique enables students to secure the very best grades. This is why ESPD’s first YouTube tutorial focused on the best questions students can ask their teachers to unlock grades. It’s also why I always ask these questions when I interview teachers for potential roles at ESPD. In my view, if a teacher is not crystal clear on technique for GCSE and A-level success, then they are not well placed to guide students to their best exam success.

If you are a parent reading this and you see your child studying or have a conversation with them about school and their subjects, two fantastically beneficial questions to ask are: What question types do you get in this subject and how are marks awarded? Also, what is the technique for answering these questions?

If your child cannot answer, encourage them to ask their teacher in their very next lesson. This is the great litmus test to determine whether your child will simply be a student who knows a lot or a student who knows a lot and secures the kind of grades their knowledge and hard work deserve.

DIVERSITY PROGRESS

What happens in schools today will impact directly on the shape of our future society and, whilst Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) progress has been made, there is no space for complacency. We are particularly alert to the fact that an increasingly diverse community – of pupils, sta and governors – does not necessarily mean a genuinely inclusive one. The litmus test for inclusion is when all within the school community feel they are valued, listened to, and have found a place where they don’t just ‘fit in’ but truly belong.

Our commitment to D&I is rooted in processes and challenges we have identified through external surveys and pupil and sta voices. In addition to ongoing curriculum review and reform, our core actions focus on training to educate and build sta confidence. We consider recruitment and retention – essential in helping pupils ‘see themselves’ reflected in the sta body. Pupil mentoring and raising awareness across the pupil body around bias, banter, discrimination and prejudice

are part of our work. We also have an ‘Inclusive Environment’ programme that develops display, signage and messaging celebrating core D&I values.

A self-selecting group across the school community, our D&I Alliance considers issues around Race and Ethnicity, LGBTQ+ and Gender Allyship. These strands are led by our D&I Prefects and designated sta members, with overall support from our Director of Diversity and Inclusion. We also have a forum made up of a representative from every tutor group in the College. We meet termly to hear their views and suggestions and ask

to further the work of the Alliance.

Looking at wider learning, our Free Learning calendar of events, often run for or in conjunction with our partner schools, includes Black History Month, Holocaust Memorial Day, DC IAM (in February 2023 the College will hold its third Identity Awareness Month), International Women’s Day and Refugee Week.

We recently screened the Windrush film Stand Firm, narrated by Benjamin Zephaniah, holding a Q&A with its director Theo Lee Ray and Co-Founder of the Windrush Foundation Arthur Torrington.

This academic year, our Archive Research project will uncover and add to our own hidden history, celebrating diverse pioneers from across academic, entrepreneurial, creative, cultural, adventurous, and sporting fields. On a day-to-day basis, here at Dulwich College we are determined to help our community be more aware, be active in allyship, and strive to ensure all pupils and sta feel they belong.

TAKE FIVE

Industry insiders share the five hottest wellness trends for expecting mamas and new mums in 2023…

158 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Ear Seeds

Ear seeds are extremely helpful at supporting postpartum symptoms including anxiety, headaches, fatigue, and insomnia – and as they are 100% natural they are the perfect remedy for new mums. At first glance they look like jewellery, but there’s a lot to them! These little golden ear seeds are already a real trend in the capitals of the world, and also here at Escapada. At our TCM practices, we firmly believe that we can activate our body and mind to find inner balance and feel good. Ear Acupuncture and Ear Seeds o er the perfect solution for gentle, natural support on-the-go. The Ear Seed method is based on the teachings of acupressure, which is part of Chinese medicine. Small gold-plated beads are placed on specific acupuncture points in the ear using a transparent patch and remain there until they fall out. It is based on the assumption that our life energy Qi can be brought back into flow by applying pressure to specific points with the aim of releasing energetic blockages in the body and achieving inner balance. My only advice? Ask your acupuncturist to put the ear seeds in to ensure that they are on the correct acupoints – for mothers ear seeds are 100% safe but if you are pregnant there are certain points that can bring on early labour so must be avoided.

Palo Santo

There’s been a huge increase in sales already for Palo Santo and I definitely think this will follow through as one of the biggest wellness trends of 2023, which is why our Palo Santo Oil Perfume from Rahua is going to be a hero product for all mums! It’s an amazing therapeutic perfume with so many aromatherapy properties. Helping elevate the mood of the user, Palo Santo contains terpenes which are the biosynthesis messengers of the medicinal plants and oils we used when creating this fantastic perfume. The combination of plant based ingredients gives the user an instantaneous mood lift, like many other perfumes do, but in this case Rahua Palo Santo Perfume is completely made without the usage of synthetic chemicals that may become a health hazard in the long run, and want to be avoided when you are a new mum! Indigenous women in the Americas have been using Palo Santo during pregnancy for

centuries in a very successful way. They’ve been using it as a tea, for anti-anxiety, in a therapeutic way, amongst other ways. However, due to the essential oil content some people may be allergic to it. So it is best to test before use and use precautions when pregnant. Personally, I’m pregnant now and I have used it throughout my pregnancy and it brings uplifting moments and it’s great for centering and meditation.

–Postpartum Care Golden Month Acupuncture

Postpartum care is often a neglected area of care during pregnancy, but here at Escapada we believe it’s the most important. ‘Golden Month’ is the Chinese name for these special weeks following childbirth, because it’s believed that many chronic diseases can be cured if the mother is looked after properly in her Golden Month. As Escapada we o er acupuncture, herbal tonics, and health plans that will support mothers before, during and most crucially after childbirth. As the western world starts to shift focus on how important postpartum care is, we think there’s going to be an increase in natural, safe and alternative medicine solutions available to mums.

• Mother Warming: Mother Warming is a gorgeous ritual performed by a trained acupuncturist ideally 10 days after labour. It can help the new mother have more energy and feel rejuvenated and is a great way to gently aid recovery from childbirth and restore energy. It involves gently warming the acupuncture meridians that run through the lower back and abdomen to gently warm the uterus after opening, nourish blood, and move energy. It utilises a Moxa stick to warm acupuncture points for 5 – 10 minutes until they feel pleasantly warm. It is deeply nourishing to the area.

• Acupuncture: Postpartum acupuncture is a wonderful way to gently treat a woman’s body back into balance. An acupuncturist will focus on hormonal rebalancing techniques and any other symptoms that have come up like anxiety, digestive complaints, skin issues etc.

Herbal Medicine & Tonics

There’s been a huge rise in supplements in 2022 and we foresee herbal medicine and tonics becoming a big wellness trend next year too. Individualised TCM herbal tonics are an amazing supplement for mothers to take and nourish them back to full health, rebalancing blood and Qi. Herbal medicine is a wonderful way to support your body as your herbalist can combine herbs to make formulas and tonics specific to your individual needs. For example, formulas can be created to nourish your blood in combination with herbs to improve circulation which is vital for hormonal and sexual health. For women, herbs that help to regulate the menstrual cycle and support healthy female reproductive function include White Peony Root and Dong Quai. Tao Hong Si Wu Tang is a popular blood nourishing formula and great for postpartum mums. They are often taken with female reproductive tonics traditionally used to tone and preserve the Yin (such as Rehmannia, Chinese Licorice and Ginger) and promote the flow of Qi (energy) and blood to the ovaries, uterus and pelvis (such as Tangkuei and Chinese

Angelica Root). Further more, Chinese medicine has a long tradition of using safe, gentle aphrodisiacs and may be all you need to naturally get your sex life back on track (if you are ready for that and need a little helping hand), postpartum when you are healed.

Sleep Dohars (for expecting mums, new mums and babies)

Sleep has been one of the biggest wellness trends of 2022, and it’s going to be even bigger in 2023 as we start focusing on self care and wellness after an indulgent festive season. One struggle of being pregnant, and even postpartum is lack of sleep, which is why I know the Sleep Dohar is going to be a huge trend next year (and is already on the rise) – especially as your travel essential! Comparable to a top sheet, and virtually unknown in Europe, Dohars are temperature controlling ‘supercharged’ blankets that were originally used by the Maharajahs during the monsoon season and hottest nights of the year to keep them cool. The Dohar design comprises three layers of superior quality, super soft, finely woven

‘Mul Mul’ cotton that are not only breathable, but regulate your body temperature as the layers of voile cotton trap cool air, acting as a lightweight coverlet which are still weighty enough to keep you cosy and comfy that can be layered throughout winter and spring. They are perfect when you are pregnant and struggle to get comfortable with a weighty duvet, and even better postpartum when you have those mid-morning naps with your sleeping baby, and especially when travelling! We also o er beautiful baby Dohars that can be used whilst travelling, for swaddling and in the pram – all temperature controlling and lightweight!
