Dream homes

We're swooning over Couverture's of fabulous fashions and interiors.

his issue is optimistically focused on travel, because it's undeniable that everyone is keen to get away. We've put together some dream far-flung destinations, and some hopeful European ones, but mostly we're looking closer to home. Summer 2021 is already set to be the summer of the staycation, and we have discovered lots of beautiful UK places to stay and visit. Cornwall is a highlight, and even this month's receipes come from the Cornish coast. One person who has made it out of the UK recently is Bella Younger – aka Deliciously Stella – whose new book The Accidental Influencer tells the entertaining yet alarming story of how what started as a satirical instagram feed ended up damaging her mental health. She sought refuge by a pool in Mallorca last year and is still there; she made time to talk to us between swims. Also in this issue we celebrate Giffords Circus (currently in Chswick and set to tour the UK) we look at cookery courses for kids and we meet the couple who moved from London to Provence to launch Mirabeau wines. Enjoy July.

Giffords Circus returns to Chiswick with new show The Hooley By EVE HERBERT

“Nell will continue to live through the circus in what is a truly family affair”

G

iffords Circus returns to London this summer with its longawaited production The Hooley, playing at Chiswick House and Gardens. Acclaimed writer and director Cal McCrystal, who returns to the helm for the tenth year, and the star of the 2019 show Lil Rice, together with long-time Giffords Circus’ musical director James Keay and rising star set and costume designer takis, are set to take circus co-founder and producer Nell Gifford’s extraordinary vision forwards this year with a brand-new show. Conceived by Cal McCrystal and Nell Gifford before Nell’s untimely death in December 2019, and dedicated to Nell, The Hooley will be a showstopper, produced by Nell’s niece Lil. Along with Tweedy the clown, the return of Giffords stalwart singer/dancer Nancy Trotter Landry and champion vaulter Rebecca Musselwhite, and other audience favourites, Nell will continue to live through the Circus in what is a truly family affair. Having wowed audiences with her lead vocals and cyr wheel act in the 2019 show, Xanadu and worked alongside her aunt and mentor Nell for two years before her death, Lil Rice has been producer and face of Giffords Circus since 2020. Rice said, “I am honoured to be stepping into the role of producer and to be working

with such a great team. It is, of course, bittersweet having lost Nell, but it remains a family business and a legacy that we carry on for Nell’s twins, Red and Cecil.” Physical comedy virtuoso Cal McCrystal (One Man, Two Guvnors, Paddington, Paddington 2) said of The Hooley, “There will be faeries, trolls, pixies, leprechauns, wild horses, Celtic music and dancing and all the madcap magic that Giffords is synonymous with. Nell and I had a great time planning this show and being Irish I can’t wait to share what promises to be a most magical show.” Established in 2000 by Nell and Toti Gifford, Giffords Circus is a magical village green circus that tours England throughout the summer. Combining dance, comedy, horses and live music in a small white tent surrounded by hand-made burgundy and gold showman’s wagons, it has a broad and dedicated following of farmers, children, artistes, sports people, models, actors, rock stars, and royalty. INFLUENCE Bella Younger – aka Deliciously Stella – survived life as an influencer. Absolutely chats to her about clean eating, mental health and the instagram algorithm Interview PENDLE HARTE

I

nstagram isn’t generally associated with comedy. Humour isn’t what most influencers peddle, with their #blessed #beautiful #love effusiveness on the platform that promotes a toxic mix of self-congratulation and self-hatred. But Bella Younger was (or is) an unusual influencer. With her Deliciously Stella alter ego she set out to parody the influencer tone and was extremely good at it – until she found herself behaving just like the influencers she was satirising, and suddenly things got weird. Now she’s written a book about her adventures in instagram, subtitled ‘how my need to get likes nearly ruined my life’. Which isn’t to say that she’s not still feeling a bit conflicted about the whole thing. ‘In the quest to make people laugh I lost something of myself,” she tells me over the phone from her new home in Mallorca. The timing of her book launch is strange, with no real life events planned and her now fully living on the Spanish island where she went to recover from the mental health crisis that social media triggered. The book is a good read – both funny and serious, and Bella seems like the kind of person you’d want for a friend with her self-deprecating humour, sensitivity and honesty. But the pressures of

18

social media led her to a dark place, which she is now dedicated to broadcasting. Which is creating another paradox: “I’d love the book to sell,” she says, “but I’m struggling to find a way of publicising it on social media that doesn’t make me feel anxious or disingenuous.” It’s tricky to promote a book about hating social media on social media – just as spoofing social media on social media proved problematic, too. Deliciously Stella started so well. Bella was a stand-up comedian working as a runner BELLA YOUNGER

CULTURE • INTERVIEW

“The dopamine hit of seeing your like count go up is the same as any drug” at the BBC when what she calls the ‘cult’ of wellness and 'clean eating' exploded on instagram. This was 2015, when, she writes: “There was not a middle class white woman in Britain who did not own – or know someone who owned – a spiralizer.” Deliciously Ella’s new book was the UK's fastest-selling cookbook and “her feed was full of gushing women admiring her perfect life and thanking her for saving them from their disgusting, sugar-filled lives.” The concept of clean eating was quickly shown to have no scientific credibility, yet Bella noted: “We had regressed to become a world where influencers had replaced experts and followers are more important than knowledge.” As Deliciously Stella (Deliciously Bella was taken), Bella started posting pictures with the same type of daft captions and hashtags employed by wellness influencers. She had pictures of tinned Gordons and tonic (‘I love green juice!’) and avocado on toast with (Haribo) eggs and ‘delicious energy balls’ (Ferrero Rocher) all smugly captioned #eatclean and #gettheglow and #wellness and ending with those inane questions – ’how do you like to start your day?’ Soon she started getting thousands of likes. Brands wanted to collaborate with her

and she became, essentially, an influencer, going to events and creating paid-for posts, albeit in an ironic way. “The most fun was in the early days, before there was money involved. There were a couple of months of sheer joy all about doing the funniest thing I could and going to events where I was the only person there who wanted to have fun, while everyone else was very seriously taking pictures. I was thinking, this is insane, and also: I’m so glad that my brand allows me to do this.” But gradually she got sucked into a vortex of obsessing over likes and followers and her mental health plummeted. Now that she’s looking back, she’s confident that she can ‘armchair diagnose’ influencers with similar issues. “You can see when people are trying to get more likes.” And there’s an ongoing obsession with trying to second-guess the all-important algorithm that determines where your post appears on your followers’ feeds. Effectively, she says, likes are addictive. “The dopamine hit of seeing your like count go up is the same as any drug. Today psychiatrists and therapists take that seriously, but when I first started having treatment they didn’t.” Now she’s on a mission to promote the risks of social media to young women and

girls. “We haven’t really grappled yet with the comparison culture that it breeds,” she says. Also, the homogenisation of looks is a source of concern. “The algorithm seems to prefer a certain shape of face and people are changing themselves to be more likeable. I can’t imagine having that much outside pressure when you’re 13 and your brain’s not fully formed.” She’s about to give a talk at her old school and it’s likely that she’ll become a campaigner. “These apps are not built to celebrate your individuality and changing yourself to fit what a machine wants is just wrong.” However, she’s optimistic about the generation below her, which she believes is savvier and more politically engaged. “Whereas we all just wanted to look like Sienna Miller,” she says. Bella’s already working on another book and is hoping to adapt The Accidental Influencer for TV. She still posts on instagram; she’d like to shun it altogether but it’s difficult. “It would feel like turning your back on the world.” So the impasse remains: how to have a discussion about social media without using the platforms it offers? Maybe comedy is the answer. The Accidental Influencer by Bella Younger is published by Harper Collins, £14.99

n Sunday 1 August, Catalyst is welcoming guests to Lauderdale House in Highgate for an exclusive launch event of five contemporary townhouses at The Folium. Located in a sought-after corner of Northwest London, just a short walk from Muswell Hill village, The Folium is a new collection of luxury four bedroom townhouses. During the launch event, guests will be able to explore virtual video tours of the new townhouses and sample floor plans and specification, as well as get a flavour for the sought-after neighbourhood. Close to Coppetts Wood Nature Reserve, Alexandra Palace, and Highgate Wood, The Folium is in the heart of one of London’s greenest neighbourhoods, with each home designed to maximise on outdoor space. on both the first and top floors. Celebrating Muswell Hill’s lush green setting even further, the modern architecture is softened with extensive landscaping that incorporates mature trees, open green spaces, and planting. The four-bedroom townhouses provide almost 2,300 sqft of living space, spread vertically across four floors, offering the space essential for modern family living. The homes also include two parking spaces, convenient for whizzing the family around town. Built to a premium specification, each townhouse includes top-of-the-range finishing and high-tech fittings including underfloor heating and a video entry system. Upon entering, residents are greeted with an expansive open plan kitchen/ dining room featuring integrated NEFF appliances, Silestone worktops, and modern cabinetry, in addition to glass splashbacks and under-unit lighting. Rounding off the ground floor is the allimportant home study and large doors leading out to the private patio garden.

Upstairs is home to a separate spacious living room on the first floor, complete with access to a private terrace. Bedrooms are spread across three storeys and include either a dedicated en-suite or Jack and Jill bathroom. A luxurious principal suite dominates the top floor – the walk-in wardrobe, en-suite, and private terrace create the ultimate home retreat. Markus Kendall-Young, Sales & Marketing Director (London) at Catalyst, comments: “We are thrilled to be launching our collection of townhouses at The Folium, providing luxe family living in this sought after neighbourhood. New-build developments in the area are few and far between, and new multi-storey houses are even rarer. With just five available, we anticipate they will be reserved quickly.” Muswell Hill is home to a vibrant array of independent shops, restaurants, and cafes that contribute to its distinct village identity. Local favourites include Misk Furniture Boutique, Cheeses of Muswell Hill and W Martyn tea and coffee shop.

Ideal for young and growing families, The Folium is well placed for the local area’s best schools including Ofsted-rated Outstanding Coppett’s Wood Primary School, Eden Primary School, and Treehouse School for SEN children. Muswell Hill may feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of central London, but the well-connected neighbourhood offers plenty of routes into the city. The W7 bus connects commuters to Finsbury Park and its tube and train services into central London while nearby Alexandra Palace train station offers train journeys into Moorgate in just 20 minutes. Further tube connections are available at East Finchley and Highgate stations, both served by the Northern line. The townhouses at The Folium are priced from £1,400,000. Join Catalyst on Sunday 1 August from 10am-4pm for the exclusive launch event. Lauderdale House, Waterlow Park, Highgate Hill, London, N6 5HG To RSVP, visit catalyst.homes

The festival is inspired by the creativity and culture that have shaped the royal boroughs, and will see the Kensington and Chelsea area come alive with immersive installations, exhibits, murals and events. Highlights from this years installment of Kensington and Chelsea Art Week will include work by esteemed British visual artist Zak Ové alongside LR Vandy, Anthony Garrat, Amy Jackson and Lauren Baker. Of his work in the festival, Zak Ové said ‘I’m fascinated by ideas around time travel, the spread of diaspora and the positive effects of colliding cultures. My sculpture highlights my belief in the power or play embodied in

CourgetteFlower Risotto Serves 6

I love risotto. It’s a dish we always eat at home and have on my restaurant menu. Ever popular, it’s also a dish that you can eat throughout the year. There is something so wonderful about courgettes and their beautiful flowers, so very versatile, too. This lovely recipe is just delicious and something different, using up every part of the courgette and flower. It reminds me of long summer days, when supper is eaten outside and when the time seems endless. At this time of the year, sweet broad (fava) beans and peas are delicious and adding them to this risotto at the end just brings even more summery high notes.

INGREDIENTS • 10 courgette (zucchini) flowers with baby courgettes still attached • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 400 g (14 oz/scant 2 cups) Carnaroli or Arborio risotto rice • 1.5 litres (50 fl oz/6 cups) vegetable stock, hot • 60 ml (2 fl oz/¼ cup) white wine • 100 g (3 1⁄2 oz) Parmesan, grated, or to taste • Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh basil leaves, to serve

Monkfish, Cornish Chorizo

and sun blush tomatoes on rosemary skewers Serves 8

METHOD 1 Detach the flowers from the courgettes, remove the stamens and gently wipe the flowers clean. Slice the courgettes into rounds.

2 Heat the olive oil in a large pan and fry the garlic and onion until softened. Add the courgette flowers and stir for 1 minute, then add the rice and stir until well coated in the oil. 3 Pour over a ladleful of stock and stir until it is absorbed. Repeat until the stock is finished. 4 Add the courgettes and stir through, then add the white wine. Cook for a further 5 minutes, then remove from the heat. 5 Add Parmesan and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve garnished with basil leaves and extra Parmesan.

• 100 ml (3 1⁄2 fl oz/scant 1/2 cup) olive oil • Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper To serve • Handful of rocket (arugula) leaves • Hot buttered Cornish new potatoes • Mixed leaf salad with edible flowers

METHOD MONKFISH, or lotte in French, is known as the poor man’s lobster. It is a delicious, robust and wonderful ingredient that I love to cook and eat. It works so well with bolder flavours, such as curries, or can be cooked over fire or even refined by serving as a ceviche. Here, the combination of monkfish, chorizo and sun blush tomatoes is delicious. Threading them on to rosemary skewers is pretty and adds a depth of flavour to the fish.

INGREDIENTS • 1 x 200 g (7 oz) jar sun blush tomatoes, drained, reserving the oil • 1 medium chorizo, about 225g (8 oz), cut into 1 cm (1⁄2 in) rounds • 650 g (1 lb 7 oz) monkfish fillet, cut into chunks • 12 long rosemary sprigs, plus extra leaves for sprinkling

1 Preheat a barbecue or grill (broiler) to high. 2 Place the sun blush tomatoes in a large bowl and add the sliced chorizo. Using a skewer, pierce a hole through each piece of monkish, then toss in the bowl with the tomatoes and chorizo. Thread alternately onto rosemary skewers, allowing 3 pieces of each ingredient on each skewer. 3 Barbecue or grill (broil) the monkfish skewers on all sides, keeping them moving, for a total of 6 minutes, or until browned at the edges. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper and rosemary leaves. 4 Lay the grilled monkfish skewers on rocket leaves and serve with hot buttered Cornish new potatoes and a kitchen leaf salad with summer flowers.

top of one of the foil pieces, then brush the salmon with oil, too. 3 Put the parsley, lemon slices and bay leaves into the body cavity. Crimp the edges of the foil together to make a parcel, but just before sealing, pour in the wine. Seal tightly and bake the fish in the oven for 50–60 minutes. 4 Allow the fish to cool in the parcel, then gently peel off the skin and serve cold, garnished with thinly sliced cucumber, watercress, lemon slices and citrus mayo. Note Leftover salmon can be used the next day in a salad with Cornish new potatoes, dill and mayo. TARRAGON MAYO – Serves 6 • 3 egg yolks • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 250 ml (8 1⁄2 fl oz/1 cup) sunflower oil • A handful of fresh tarragon • Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Whole Baked Salmon with cucumber, watercress and mayonnaise for days Serves 8

On summer days, my mother Lucy was always the best at bringing everyone together. This recipe of whole baked salmon is somewhat retro but it is a wonderful dish for the middle of a table, served alongside Cornish new potatoes with herbs and crème fraîche, bowls of garden leaves and wildflowers. Finish the meal with English strawberries, meringues

and cream. Think of warm days, with Champagne by the glass, or chilled rosé. Days when life seems uncomplicated and simple.

INGREDIENTS • 100 ml (3 1⁄2 fl oz/scant 1⁄2 cup) sunflower oil, for brushing • 1 whole salmon, 2–3 kg (4–6 lb), gutted, cleaned and scaled • 1 large sprig of flat-leaf parsley • 2 lemons, cut into sunshine rounds • 2 bay leaves • 300 ml (10 fl oz/1¼ cups) white wine

1 Place the egg yolks in a food processor and add the lemon juice, mustard and a good pinch of sea salt. Whiz until just combined. With the motor still running, slowly pour the oil through the funnel in a fine, slow stream until all the oil is incorporated and it has emulsified. 2 Remove the tarragon leaves from the stalks and roughly chop. As you chop, the delicious fragrance will be released. Fold through the mayo, taste and season as needed.

For the garnish • Thin cucumber slices • Watercress • Lemon rounds • Citrus Mayo

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan/400°F/Gas 6). 2 Take 2 large sheets of kitchen foil and place on top of each other in a roasting tin (pan). Brush oil over both pieces of foil, place the salmon on

THE GORING Lobster and fizz in Belgravia

he Goring is celebrating the great British summer with a special Lobster & Fizz menu. The grand Belgravia hotel, known for its ties with the Royal Family, is serving grilled fresh-off-the boat Cornish lobster accompanied by bubbles from Della Vite, the highly rated prosecco from Delevingne sisters Poppy, Chloe and Cara. The menu runs until the end of summer. In addition to the ultimate combo of lobster and fizz, it also includes The Goring seafood platter, lobster Caesar salad and freshly shucked rock oysters. All paired

with chilled glasses of Della Vite’s Prosecco Superiore DOCG. We visited in the last gloomy days of a cold May but were quickly cheered by the warm welcome showed to us by Goring staff. As London’s last family-owned luxury hotel, personal service is everything here and the reason so many visitors are returning customers. The damp conditions meant the ‘Glorious Goring Garden’ was out of the question, but we kicked off with some summer cocktails in the Veranda and admired the garden from the welcome warmth inside. We started with lobster fritters with coral mayonnaise and samphire

and half a dozen Irish rock oysters. The fritters were plump, sweet, and comforting. But they were outshone by the rock oysters which were briny fresh, cold and - when paired with the Delevingnes’ prosecco – next level delicious. For main, lobster and Longhorn beef fillet with bearnaise and triple cooked chips was pleasing, if a little on the small side. The lobster was more langoustine, the fillet more of a medallion. But these are mere trifles, it all tasted fantastic. Some of the service was a little rusty post-Covid (a request for a lobster pick never materialised) but the hotel had only started serving diners a few days previously so a little leeway is allowed. If you were to go now, in the fabulous summer sun, Lobster & Fizz in the glorious Goring Garden must surely be the best way to enjoy our return to going out and the best of the British summer. The Goring’s famous family pony, Teddy the Shetland, is also in residence during the summer. THE GORING

ointreau has released a margarita cocktail experience with a limited edition paintby-numbers set to create your very own Acapulco-inspired Cointreau margarita print at home. The margarita was the nation's favourite lockdown cocktail, apparently. Originally created when Dallas socialite Margaret Sames mixed her two favourite spirits, Cointreau and tequila, together with lime juice while holidaying in Acapulco in 1948, this original recipe has stood the test of time. and this kit comes with everything you need. Two fluted margarita tumblers, a lime squeezer, a bottle of Cointreau, lots of limes and some sea salt come with a canvas and lots of paint colours for the paint-by-numbers project. Note that this is no child's activity and takes quite some time to complete. So it's ideal for lockdowns, or rainy days – and the result is something to display with pride.

JAPAN GRILL

Charcoal cooking at Soho's Robata B y L AY L A T U R N E R

N “Squid with coriander and yuzu has a uniquely tangy taste”

obody ever needs an excuse to head to Soho. The abundance of bars, shops and restaurants make it a choice favourite for Londoners – and high on the to-visit list is Robata, the friendly neighbourhood sushi bar on Old Compton Street. Robata is the perfect destination for after work drinks, weekend lunches and, naturally, delicious sushi. The drinks list is extensive; the brave among you should try ‘Judai No Ai’, a fiery blend of star anise, ginger and Japanese pink pepper that’s sure to awaken the senses. For those looking for something a little less intense, there are 22 cocktails available. Robata translates as ‘fireside’, and the restaurant specialises in Japanese charcoal cooking. For those wanting the full Robata experience, the tasting menu (for a minimum of two people), offers guests a chance to experience the chefs’ top picks from sushi to small plates including salmon rolls, chilli pepper squid, hay flamed beef fillet and black cod. The restaurant is only too happy to cater to its vegetarian and vegan guests too. While my guest and I are weighing up our choices for the evening, the attentive waiting staff give us a background into the history of the restaurant and ingredients used in the kitchen, with the chef adding his own spin on classic Japanese dishes. First up are avocado rolls and beef tataki. The avocado rolls are delicate and full of flavour. The beef is perfectly cooked - tender and aromatic, served alongside garlic chips and truffle aioli that further complement the flavours of the meat. Next, we are served beef fillet, chilli pepper squid, pork gyoza and truffle fries. Everything is delicious and you can tell

only the freshest of ingredients were used. The squid is served with coriander and yuzu, resulting in a uniquely tangy taste. Strangely, the truffle aioli served alongside the truffle fries has a distinctive aftertaste of green tea that is light and refreshing. The past year has been full of trials and tribulations for the hospitality industry. As I sit at Robata on a Monday evening, the environment around me is bustling, more so than the neighbouring restaurants. This is a testament to the service, drinks, food and all around ambience that Robata has to offer - from the freshest ingredients, plentiful menu options, and friendly and efficient service, Robata is a must-visit destination for food lovers, and I will definitely be back for more. How Wine&Something responded to lockdown to create a brand worth drinking in

“The brand offers a unique collection of 300 wines from 75 artisan producers across 12 countries”

W

ine&Something is the story of a brand built in lockdown. Having only established itself a year earlier and exclusively serving the trade industry before COVID-19 struck, the company knew it had to change journey, after losing 100% of their income, and reinvent itself as a consumer brand – and quickly. Fuelled by the spirit and determination of an underdog, the company changed brand name and created a unique positioning to be relevant to the general public. The result is Wine&Something – a brand and website that was conceived and created during lockdown and launched late last year. The brand promises to bring “wow” to the wine lives of customers across the UK, by bringing them a unique collection of 300 wines from 75 artisan producers across 12 countries. This is about taking people on a journey of discovery, which is why 85% of their portfolio is exclusive to Wine&Something in the UK. What’s more, 100% of the wines are selected by their Master of Wine (MW), Robin Kick, one of only 400 MWs in the world. Wine&Something believe that good wine goes with anything. The name Wine&Something lends itself naturally to brand extensions – Wine&Friendship, Wine&Summer, Wine&Romance – a conscious decision on the part of the ambitious founders, who have built a website designed to expand beyond a traditional ecommerce store, into “something” great. “Ambitious, innovative and gratifyingly different, we believe that good wine goes with anything,” says Wine&Something’s co-founder and CEO, Dale Agar. “Big nights. Posh meals. New loves. Old

friends. The better the wine, the better those somethings. We’re going up against giants in the industry, but we’re an underdog in all the best ways. We’re proud to offer the UK consumer some of the most exciting wines in the country, exclusive to Wine&Something.” If you’re looking for a fun-filled evening with friends, Wine&Something offer a variety of virtual wine tastings too with a choice of entertaining and knowledgeable hosts, including Robin Kick. WINE&SOMETHING would like to treat Absolutely readers to a 10% discount on their first order using the code ABSOLUTELY10 until the 31 July, 2021. See more at wineandsomething.com

SKIN routine edical-grade skincare brand AlumierMD are helping us ditch the foundation this summer. Their new Summer Essentials kit, formulated with awardwinning active ingredients, work together to protect and brighten the skin and tackle UV induced hyperpigmentation. ‘Hyperpigmentation is the term used to describe areas of uneven skin pigmentation’, explains Dr Molina. ‘The process occurs when excess melanin causes a darkened appearance to the skin. Melanin protects skin cells and their DNA by absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UVR). Darker skin types, in general, are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation than lighter skin types because their skin naturally contains more melanin. UV-induced hyperpigmentation shows in the form of freckles, age spots and uneven skin tone’. The kit can only be purchased following a skincare consultation with one of the brands licenced professionals - proving the power and potency of the products whilst ensuring that the customer receives a hyper-customised regime that sits in line with their skincare concerns. Dr Beatriz Molina shares her two step routine to transform your skin. ‘In the morning, after cleansing and exfoliating, apply five drops of Ever Active to your face (focusing on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin). Follow by gently massaging two pumps of EvenTone into the face, neck and décolletée in an upwards motion’. ALUMIERMD

KATE HETZEL, THE FOUNDER OF EXIMIUS

LIVE-IN CARE MEANS NOT HAVING TO LEAVE BEHIND PETS

E X C E P T I O N A L S E R V I C E Absolutely speaks to Kate Hetzel, the founder of Eximius, about why their care provisions go above and beyond Q Before you formed Eximius, what

was your background in care? A I worked in the flavour industry for 16 years when I left college. I spent 10 years in the States working with McDonald’s and Burger King, so when I returned to the UK in 2000 I wanted to do something more meaningful! My father had been a surgeon and I always regreted not having gone into the medical profession, so care seemed to use my business skills and my desire to follow my father. I bought a care franchise in 2002 and ran this for 13 years. This was a domiciliary company and focused on short calls for clients. We always had a few live-in care clients and I was passionate about the difference live-in care can make. I was able to sell my franchise in 2015 and decided to set-up Eximius to focus purely on live-in care, which I believe to be very different. Eximius means “exceptional” in Latin, and that is what we aim for every day.

Q From day one, how did you want to set

yourself apart from other care providers?

A We wanted to be a high quality,

personalised care provider, where we know all our clients, and our carers are called “companions”. No-one aspires to have care when they’re older and many of our clients are very resistant when they first come to us. It is lovely to see their change in attitude after a very short time! Many tell us they don’t know how they coped without our service.

Q How important is it to individuals

or couples to be able to remain at home and receive care? A Most people we talk to want to stay in their own homes. Their belongings, memories and often their pets are there and no-one wants to leave them behind. People also like their own routines and flexibility and often this is not achievable in a care home setting. This was especially

the case during the pandemic. Live-in is particularly good for couples allowing them to stay together and is often more cost effective than a care home. Q Can you explain your different

live-in care services you offer?

A We offer four types of live-in care to

cover whatever needs people might have. To put very simply: Day Live-In means the companion works through the day and sleeps at night; Night Live-In means the companion works throughout the night and sleeps during the day. Some of our particularly ill clients have both day and night; Clinical Live-In is for our clients that need more clinical input. This includes spinal injury, brain injury and some long-term conditions. The companions providing this type of care are more highly trained in clinical skills such as bowel management; Respite Live-In care is short term live-in care – normally two to four weeks. This is for clients either coming out of hospital and needing some short-term support or where a family carer may need a break.

Q How does it feel to be rated

as an "outstanding" live in care provider by the CQC? A We were so proud to be awarded an outstanding rating by the Care Quality Commission. Only 5% of companies nationwide are awarded this and it is for companies that go above and beyond the regulations. We were awarded it in “caring”, “well-led” and “responsive”. eximiussupport.uk

Salon STYLE

Absolutely visits celebrity stylist Callum Standen May within Bond Shoreditch salon B y L AY L A T U R N E R

W

ith the abundance of hair salons in London, it can be hard to choose the right fit. Visiting a salon is an experience, with many offering a range of amenities more comprehensive than the last - but how do you know which one is right for you? Situated on a quiet street in Shoreditch, Bond is an intimate yet inviting space. Today, I am here to visit celebrity stylist, cutting influencer and British hairdressing awards winner Callum Standen-May. As someone who hasn’t shied away from a scalp bleach over the years, my hair has definitely seen better days. Callum examines my tresses and we both agree that my hair would benefit from a good freshen up, with some shaping around my fringe area. Callum gets to work on my hair and we chat about everything from hair trends to weekend plans. Callum tells me his favourite current cuts are the Mullet - he says this style has been a recent favourite with clients within the salon (we are in Shoreditch, after all) and The Midi - a cut that plays homage to the Bob style, with textured ends that linger around the décolletage area. Callum unveils his work, and I am shocked at how much difference a good cut can make - I walked into the salon with hair that lacked lustre and bounce, and in under an hour, Callum had breathed life into my hair. The ends were textured, and the front was full of shape and volume without Callum having even styled it yet. Callum blow dries my hair so that it is straight yet full of volume, and the result is light, textured and voluminous . When I walked into the Salon today, I had little idea of what I wanted to do with my hair. Whilst

it’s important for a stylist to listen to your hair goals, it is also important that they are confident in suggesting what’s best for you. Callum took the time to advise me on what styles would work best for me, asking questions about my hair care routine and how long I take to style my locks. The experience was an enjoyable one from start to finish. I felt comfortable throughout - Callum is one of those individuals who has you talking for hours. I leave the salon with a spring in my step, and of course, fabulous hair. CA L LU M STA N D E N M AY Callum operates within Bond Shoreditch, whilst non-Londoners can visit him at Standen May salon, Norwich. View his work at @callumstandenmay.

T H E Z O O M E F F E C T Rejuvenating interest in cosmetic surgery By EVE HERBERT

“A consequence of meetings over Zoom has been a renewed awareness of how we look”

W

e have been living with Covid-19 for well over a year now. The pandemic has impacted everyone in different ways as people have learnt to adapt the way they live their lives. Face masks, social distancing and Zoom meetings have all become the norm. A consequence of working from home and having to conduct meetings over Zoom has been a renewed awareness of how we look. It’s hard to ignore puffy eyes and jowls when spending so much time looking at your own reflection. This has directly led to an increase in enquiries relating to cosmetic surgery to address wrinkles, jowls, scars, skin moles, eye lids and eye bags as well as excess skin through weight-loss. The time and isolation from others has afforded people with the chance to reflect on their appearance and even the appearance of others. Perhaps noticing a birthmark on the skin of their child for the first time. Or maybe they have made the decision their family is complete and want their body back. Now that life is returning to some form of normality (at least for now), people are empowered to make positive changes to their lives. Be it getting fit, eating healthily or looking at cosmetic surgery to address problem areas. If it is the latter, there are both surgical and nonsurgical options available and consultant plastic surgeon, Chris Abela will be happy to discuss these in more detail. Chris is experienced in body contouring

CHRIS ABELA

and cosmetic surgery and runs a private practice with clinics in Marylebone, Chelsea and Wimbledon. In June 2021, Chris opened a new clinic at 84 Harley Street. Chris’ ethos and the team’s overarching philosophies encompass: • a safe and evidence-based approach to the medicine and surgery provided • h olistic and honest consultations to enable patients with a better quality of life, long after they have been discharged • p roviding the right infrastructure and personnel to take care of a patient and fully support them for the duration of their journey All this is done with discretion in mind. As we continue to come out of lockdown, Chris and his team are taking all possible precautions to protect patients and are proceeding with extreme caution and care. ll eyes are on Cornwall at the moment as the UK’s hottest holiday destination of 2021. Most places to stay are booked out and rooms have been changing hands at a premium for months. And it’s no wonder, because those who love Cornwall return year after year, especially those who love surfing, who head for the north coast. When people get the surfing bug, it eclipses everything else. Friends of ours from London felt the pull of the sea so strongly that within a year of riding their first wave, they were driving to Cornwall at every available opportunity. Another year on and they had sold up, left London and moved permanently to be near the water. They even refurbished their new coastal home with surfing in mind, modifying the

LUNDY, THE POINT AT POLZEATH

garage to include surfboard and wetsuit storage and installing an outdoor shower. That’s how addictive surfing can be. So while we were ready to be taken by it, we weren’t quite ready for the reality of it. Our destination is Polzeath, a beach known for its surf and particularly its suitability for beginners. None of us has ever surfed before and there are four of us – two adults and two children, aged 12 and 15. We arrive late on Friday night and our first lesson is scheduled for Saturday morning. Arriving in the dark means that while we’re impressed with the spot, it’s not until the next day that we are blown away by the amazing view. The seven contemporary apartments at the Point at Polzeath has been designed with surfing practicalities as a priority – there's outside storage for wet gear and lots of space for all your equipment. This development was cleverly built at the top

of the hill to bring views over the field and down to the sea to every window – and the upside-down layout (bedrooms downstairs, living area on the ground floor) means that the open plan living/dining area with its huge windows gets the best view. Interiors are minimal, tastefully muted in shades of grey and neutral, with acres of space and no superfluous furniture or decoration, yet very well equipped in terms of practicality, comfort and tech. The well-equipped kitchen includes a nespresso machine and a huge fridge, plus high quality knives and everything you could need. The living room has a vast smart TV, a wood burner and lots of sofa space; there are impressive showers and underfloor heating throughout, excellent for warming chilled bones and making a stay here super comfortable whatever the weather has in store. So all of this means that after our first

surfing lesson we can recover in warmth and comfort. Because what our friends hadn’t told us is that surfing, for all its compelling qualities, is exhausting. At least it is for us beginners. Our group lesson lasts two hours, during which we go to battle with the waves and, on the whole, lose. Inevitably the children are better at it than we are, and standing up for more than a split second eludes me. Our instructors are vigilant and instill us with lots of enthusiasm and a good sense of what we are trying to do – and the addictive pull lies in the constant sense that the next wave will be the one. After the session we are all desperate to return, but immediately we head for the comfort of the apartment’s hot showers, fluffy towels and sofas. There is no better way to spend a post-surf evening than overlooking the sea from the comfort of your balcony.

● This popular surf spot forms part of Pembrokeshire’s St Bride’s Bay. It’s one of the longest beaches in the area, stretching out for two miles of soft sand backed by a bank of pebbles. Surf conditions are usually reliable but it’s best to avoid high water when the waves hit the pebble bank. It’s suitable for beginners, and there’s always plenty of space. Newsurf is the only surf school situated on Newgale Beach but it’s perfect for all abilities, from beginners attempting to catch their first wave to those looking to improve their cut back. A WETSUIT

The UK is not Mexico. You’ll need a wetsuit, even in summer, and probably a winter weight one. There’s nothing worse than freezing in cold water and for much of the year, surfing in the UK is eminently possible if you have the right kit. That will often include gloves, shoes and even a balaclava. mountainwarehouse.com

POLZEATH CORNWALL WAV E H U N T E R S

● Polzeath might not offer the best surf in North Cornwall but it’s certainly one of the most popular spots. It’s a long beach and a friendly town with countless surf schools, surf shops and eateries aimed at surfers – non-surfers are in the minority here. Even David Cameron has been snapped catching waves in his wetsuit. Wavehunters will provide you with all the kit you need. wavehunters.co.uk

A BOARD

Dick Pearce’s stylish wooden belly boards are handcrafted in Cornwall and designed to last a lifetime. The classic boards come in a wide range of stylish contemporary shades as well as the original wooden finish. Wooden boards are simpler than the newer stand-up boards; until the 1960s, no family holiday to Devon or Cornwall was complete without one. dickpearce.com

SAUNTON DEVON

WA L K I N G O N WAV E S

● One of the best beginner surf beaches in England, Saunton has manageable walls at all stages of the tide and is considered one of the premier long board waves in the country. These long, slow breaking left and rights dish out the perfect conditions to learn to surf in England, with 5-miles of open beach. walking-on-waves.com

TRANSPORT

It’s a long drive to Cornwall, and even further to Pembrokeshire, so weekending urbanites need to make sure that their cars are up to it. There’s a lot of kit and you may find yourself changing into a wetsuit in the back seat. The Mazda CX-5 is spacious enough to transport a family plus kit to even the remotest spots. mazda.co.uk

The cottage is part of an extensive refurbishment carried out on the original cow barn using traditional stonework and cedar logs from Pioneer Log Homes of Canada. Tastefully decorated using local tweeds and traditional furnishings complemented by modern appliances used in a contemporary way. The area is world renowned for its stunning scenery, wildlife, food and drink and friendly local communities. Not so well known is the low rainfall and mild climate due to the Atlantic Gulf Stream, with glorious summers and beautiful long sunsets throughout the year. The dark sky is a stunning sight with the stars clearly visible, particularly here in Altass. The cottage is situated in the small hamlet of Rosehall which is surrounded by magnificent salmon fishing rivers and trout lochs, woodland walks and a welcoming local hotel serving delicious food. HAPPY

DAYS Holidaying with teenagers can be challenging – but at Club Med’s Algarve outpost, there’s something for everyone By PENDLE HARTE

W

hat makes a good holiday? A straw poll in my family brings up the following: a beach; a pool; things to do; good food. Everyone seems to agree, but on closer interrogation it becomes clear that definitions of ‘things to do’ and ‘good food’ vary. Holidaying with teenagers is a risky prospect, because nobody wants to put up with sulking on their long-awaited holiday, yet teens are easily displeased. So what’s the solution? At Club Med, they have the solution. More than 60 years of holidaying history have left the French organisation with all the knowledge and experience to offer the magic formula. The idea is simple: everything is included, everyone is catered to, no pressure to join in. A Club Med Village is a utopian society in microcosm, with its leader, the Chef de Village, mingling amicably with guests, as staff – GOs, as they are known, for Gentils Organisateurs – share duties and socialise enthusiastically and universally.

96

No money changes hands and everything is bottomless, from the ice cream to the Aperol to the clean towels. Notice boards advertise such uncontroversial happenings as beach volleyball and tennis tournaments. Bougainvilla is permanently in bloom. It’s a highly functioning slice of escapism and clearly it’s universally appreciated, because everyone here is happy. Including us, of course. We are in the Algarve’s Da Balaia resort, where surroundings are beautiful, food and drink is good and plentiful, and space and comfort are seamless. At first, our daughters, age 12 and 15, have predictable reservations about joining in. They respond with calculated indifference to the invitation to join the kids’ group – but this attitude is short-lived: by day two they are congregating with other teens for the 11am trapeze lesson, where friendships are formed for the week. Yes, that’s trapeze, a Club Med tradition: a huge rig plays host to lessons for all levels, and the teachers double as circus performers in the evenings to entertain the entire village. The teen group roams the resort at their own pace all week, moving between the pool, the ping pong tables and the beach,

leaving us adults to our own similar if lazier roaming. Smaller children march from activity to activity in their more supervised groups, playing minigolf, experimenting with archery and spending time in their designated shady play area, located at a discreet distance from the hub of the resort. We all settle into a holiday routine prioritising mealtimes, because food at Da Balaia is beyond impressive. Daily banquets are vast and impressive. The beauty of having three meals a day that require no personal input or even any thought is a fundamental source of Club Med joy. There’s no time to feel hungry and no need to fill up because mealtimes come round fast. The trick, we learn, is to not to eat too much, and not to worry about missing out. There is always tomorrow. The spread looks as appealing as it tastes and options suit all tastes, so if we adults choose grilled sardines for lunch, the teens can have pizza. If we have octopus, they can have burgers. Highlights of the week’s menu include oysters, tuna carpaccio, grilled prawns, clam linguini and lots of fish, while daily staples span salad, a solid cheese course and lots of fruit. Dessert is occasion-style every day, while breakfast choices include everything you can think of, from pancakes to chia pots via a full fry up. For families, all of this means that adults can enjoy sardines and salad for lunch without children complaining, which is a holiday in itself.

Between meals, we fit in tennis lessons (no shame in being an adult beginner here – there’s a class for that) and blissful swims at the adults-only Zen pool, a dreamy freshwater lake complete with lilypads and sea views. Steps lead down to a beautiful beach with gentle Atlantic waves and perfect sand. There’s no shortage of beautiful views and places to lounge. For me, the definition of a holiday is a break from making decisions and planning. Not having to think about meals, or timetables, makes a blissful escape from the daily and weekly grind. And spending time together as a family is more successful when time is also spent apart. Older children do not want to be without their peers for the entire duration of your trip, and they are entirely capable of retreating to their rooms for wifi if bored, which no adult can bear. So give them some friends and some activities, and when they return for family mealtimes, the mood is likely to be harmonious. Especially when lunch is by the pool. Seven nights all-inclusive stay at Club Med Da Balaia from £1,840 per adult (based on double occupancy) with return flights from London (LTN) and transfers included. Price based on a departure date of 22nd August 2021 and children under six stay free. Book now at clubmed.co.uk or call 0845 367 6767

PERFECT BROWS

I

Blink Brow Bar bbb-london.com

f you do one thing to improve your overall look before a holiday, make it a brow treatment. The subtle difference between a scraggy, unkempt brow and a carefully shaped one totally transforms your face, while looking natural. If done well, nobody will notice that you've had your brows done, just that your face looks somehow better. At Blink Brow Bar, a simple brow shape and tint is quick and effective. I opt for a cautious mid-brown shade to

avoid the funny heavy brow look, though some say it's best to put up with heavier brows for the first day or two for the sake of longevity. Threading is an impressive skill: with just a simple piece of cotton and some precise judgment, unwanted single hairs are eliminated quickly and (almost) painlessly. Describing exactly the shape you want can be tricky, but at Blink the staff know instinctively what you want and what will suit you. Natural arches or angular, conceptual brows? They know best. Once shaped and tinted, my brows keep their neat appearance for several weeks. Pre-holiday, it's a good idea to add a lash tint too, which leaves you mascara-free, yet always looking polished. If anything beauty-related can improve your mood in half an hour, it's a trip to Blink Brow Bar.

argaret Dabbs is the queen of feet. Known for her gamechanging medical pedicure and her wide range of foot treatments, she has opened a huge new clinic inside Westfield's John Lewis. Here she offers an extended menu of beauty treatments in addition to her famed feet treats, but we're here for our feet. The medical pedicure takes 45 minutes, of which the first few are spent closely inspecting your feet. Any imperfections, dry bits, sores or problems are quickly identified by a medically-trained podiatrist, because this is about more than just nail polish. Foot problems are very common and maintaining foot health is all-important. Uniquely, there is no foot soak at Margaret Dabbs, because her treatments work best on a dry foot. Dry skin is filed away, nails are clipped and shaped, and my feet feel renewed. This treatment is as popular with men as with women, and there's a range of home products that will maintain the results – I come away with a metal foot file and a collection of lotions. My feet have never felt – or looked – better.

In the

PINK There’s nothing nicer than a Provence rose, especially if you’re staying in the vineyard. Meet Jeany and Stephen Cronk, the couple behind Maison Mirabeau By PENDLE HARTE

DOMAINE MIRABEAU

I

t's undeniable that Jeany and Stephen Cronk are living the ultimate dream. A beautiful Provence farmhouse, their own vineyard and personal supply of palest pink wine, three photogenic children, a thriving business. What more could anyone want? This is the couple behind Maison Mirabeau, the wine brand that's partly responsible for the huge trend for drinking rose. A brief look at the brand's instagram reveals that everything they do is stylish, and most of it is pink. So how did this couple achieve their dream? Stephen and Jeany were living in London in 2008 with three children under eight. "We had a nice suburban life in Teddington but we wanted to change careers and get into wine. I really loved Provence," says Jeany, over Zoom from their French home. "We had no French and we came to live in a country village." Their children were

102

thrown in at the deep end at French school and Stephen started ringing round local growers to ask whether they had any surplus wine, with the idea of marketing it in the UK. "We were very quickly accepted and people were happy to work with us. There was a blind spot in the sector and people were very focused on the product and not on the marketing." Their idea was to create a strong visual identity for the product and promote it on social media. Everything was very well considered, even the name. "We wanted something that was easy to say and Frenchsounding, but also memorable," says Stephen. "So often you drink something and can't remember the name of it." Just before Christmas 2010, Stephen turned up in Waitrose with a bottle in the hope that he could persuade them to stock it. "They put it on the bottom shelf and said that they'd take more if we could sell

JEANY AND STEPHEN CRONK

if from there. It sold out." This thanks to a clever social media campaign in these pre-instagram days, so initially it was YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, alongside their own website. But it wasn't until 2019 that they harvested their first own crop of grapes as Mirabeau Classic. They bought an estate, Domaine Mirabeau and refurbished it to create 14 hectares of AOP Côtes de Provence vineyards as well as two holiday villa rentals and their family home. This was when they became farmers, and Jeany says: "Neither of us had ever worked this hard. Farmers struggle in Provence, especially novice ones." Even here, with the regoin's rich wine tradition, fate isn't always on your side and everyone is at the mercy of the weather. "You only get one shot per year with wine," says Stephen. Last year they lost 80% of their harvest and this year's April frost was another setback. "Mentally it's quite tough," they agree. Still, sidelines in gin and olives ensure that their business is resilient. After reading Isabella Tree's Wilding, the pair developed an interest in regenerative agriculture and decided to reintroduce nature to their vineyard. "We

wondered if you could rewild a vineyard in a controlled way, to bring back biodiversity and abandon the monocrop mindset," they thought, even though their land had been conventionally farmed for 20 years, and their own experience was limited. Now, despite the various challenges posed by insects, weather and assorted farming mysteries, they are happier than they've ever been. "We're doing what we want to do, it's a job we both love and our vocation. We're in control of our own destiny and it's very satisfying," says Jeany. Their children have grown up in Provence and their wine is stocked internationally; they live in a beautiful farmhouse that Jeany designed (she worked as an interior designer in her pre-wine days) and the climate is kind. What's not to love about life? And a glass of chilled rose is never far away.

FAC T F I L E There are two villas to rent on Domaine Mirabeau. La Bastide is a seven bedroom villa, while Le Mas farmhouse sleeps up to 12. For family occasions or small events, there is the option to rent both villas together, with a maximum capacity of 26 people. mirabeauwine.com

Everything in this country kitchen announces a rural lifestyle, from the informal bunches of garden flowers and the stoneware pots of jam with their gingham mob caps to the simplicity of the unlined curtain threaded onto curtain wire. White walls and a concrete floor painted pale grey are the blank canvas for these splashes of bright colour.

K

itchens have been on the up for a good hundred years. No longer hidden from polite society in dank basements or distant wings, the kitchen has come to be the room on which typically most expense is lavished. Cooking is on show, and the kitchen table is where family and friends gather to eat and socialize, and, when not laid for a meal, is also likely to be where laptops congregate, homework is done, board games are played, flowers are arranged, and plans are made. Once a Cinderella, kept in the background and never introduced to guests, the 21st-century kitchen has stepped into the limelight. This relatively new status often causes a problem in old houses where the rooms with the best light, views, proportions, and architectural detailing were always designed to be reception rooms, never kitchens. Some townhouse basement kitchens have decent ceiling heights and, with a bit of excavating outside at the back, can be persuaded to open directly into the garden instead of the original window well below ground level. An alternative is to elevate the kitchen to the raised ground floor reception rooms. But this can leave you short of a living room, and wondering how best to use a dark basement. In country houses, the kitchen is invariably on the ground floor, but may be north-facing and have the least attractive aspect. Again, the solution can be to relocate to a former reception room, if planning regulations allow. Farmhouses, where the kitchen has always played an important role at the centre of family life, are an exception, and the term ‘farmhouse kitchen’ is bandied about by estate agents as a mark of the highest approbation. Fitted kitchens were still a novelty in the mid-20th century, an American import, seen as a little flashy, if appealing for their perceived efficiency and hygiene. They soon became the norm, and by the 1960s, Formica in a variety of cheerful colours was widely used to create wall-to-wall wipe-clean surfaces. In the 1980s, when English Country House style had an ebullient renaissance, the fitted kitchen was adapted to suit, decked out in dragged paintwork, with multi-pane glazed wall cupboards like rows of dinky cottage windows, and shaped corner shelves edged with ranks of miniature turned A B S O L U T E LY. “If a catering kitchen with ceramic tiling, strip lighting, and expanses of gleaming stainless steel is at one end of the spectrum, these kitchens are at the opposite end”

The jolly blue and white stripes of Cornish pottery ranged on narrow shelves make a decorative focus in a small kitchen, as well as providing useful and conveniently placed storage.

spindles. Recently, a more grown-up and sophisticated style of fitted kitchen, based on the utilitarian and slightly ascetic pantries, sculleries, dairies, and larders of large country houses, has become the kitchen of choice for a period home. A fitted kitchen made in solid wood, with recessed hinges and drawers with dovetail joints, is a fine thing, but requires a substantial budget. Fortunately for the fan of English style, an unfitted kitchen, or one that is a mix of fitted and unfitted pieces, is just as desirable. This ideally requires a reception room-sized space. That classic kitchen trio of Aga (or range cooker), dresser, and a sturdy and generously proportioned kitchen table takes up a lot of space. Space also allows for pictures on the wall, and for pieces of antique and vintage furniture – sideboards, cabinets, plate racks, and wall shelves – that contribute to the decorative interest. A dresser may be used for display as well as for storage – the ideal showcase for a motley selection of old blue and white china. If there is a place for a couple of armchairs, all the better. This emphasis on comfort, and the inclusion of things that are beautiful as well as practical, is typically English. It might be as well at this point to explore the English obsession with that large, hugely heavy, solid metal stove, the Aga. It was invented in 1922 by a Swedish physicist

determined to improve on his wife’s old-fashioned kitchen range with something cleaner, less dangerous, and permanently hot and ready for use. Seven years later, a British company bought the licence, and Agas have been made and coveted here ever since, achieving totemic status as the epitome of domestic comfort. The permanent source of heat is cosy in our damp climate. My children used to sit on our Aga, bottoms insulated by the oven cloth, to warm up in our cold old house. Aga lovers are devoted, not only to the way the ovens cook with minimal loss of moisture, but to their general usefulness. The tops of their lids are hot enough to dry laundry, and the perfect place to rejuvenate soggy socks and damp newspapers. You can make toast directly on the hot plates. In four-oven versions, the warming oven is just the right temperature to revive a chilly, orphan lamb, or any other small, bedraggled animal. The longer you live with an Aga – I inherited one 20 years ago as an Aga sceptic – the more ways you find to use them – to desiccate rose petals for potpourri, for example, or to melt drips of wax off candlesticks. Modern Agas are adjustable and can run on electricity and, of course, there are other makes of this type of range cooker.

An example of a lower ground floor kitchen in a London townhouse where the floor has been dug down to give extra ceiling height, the original two rooms have been knocked into one, and the garden excavated to make it on a level with French doors at the back.

A lesson in how to give character and distinction to a galley kitchen in an urban flat using unusual colours – a floor in gloss lilac, khaki walls, and a primrose yellow blind..

“Efficiency is not the priority in this style of English kitchen” Agas and armchairs are not an option for many kitchens, and where space is limited, a fitted kitchen makes by far the best use of it. Even a small fitted kitchen can be given a relaxed, English feel with the addition of a few pieces that don’t match – an old plate rack on the wall, or a ladderback chair, always useful for hanging a tea towel or sitting on in a break from stirring and chopping. You might also consider having curtains instead of doors on lower cupboards – a cheap and pretty option. Any washable fabric is suitable, gathered and hung on curtain hooks, or threaded onto a pole or curtain wire. Ginghams and stripes have a simple, rustic feel, but you can be more adventurous with scale and colour to good effect. Photographer Jan Baldwin has curtains in a wide red and white diagonal in her London kitchen, which look strikingly chic. Open

It can be difficult to find enough suitable pieces of old and reclaimed furniture to create a wholly unfitted kitchen with sufficient drawers, cupboards, and practical work surfaces. Supplementing antiques such as this glass-fronted wall cabinet with some areas of fitted cabinetry is the best of both worlds.

shelves, to display china or earthenware, or old enamel storage jars, and a rail for hanging utensils such as sieves, colanders, and ladles all add to the mismatched effect. In the final count, efficiency is not the priority in this style of English kitchen. If a catering kitchen with ceramic tiling, strip lighting, and expanses of gleaming stainless steel is at one end of the spectrum, these kitchens are at the opposite end, where choices such as flooring, lighting, and work surfaces may be dictated more by aesthetics than by ease of cleaning, and durability. Wood, stone, brick, and terracotta all have the right, traditional feel. And pendant lights, whether with enamel, china, or metal shades, look better than recessed spotlights.

The problem of placing a modern kitchen in rooms that would once have been reception rooms in an early 19th-century house has here been elegantly solved with an Aga in an enlarged fireplace embrasure and a sleek contemporary kitchen island.

French fragrance and design house Diptyque celebrates 60 years By PENDLE HARTE

LUKE EDWARD HALL FOR DIPTYQUE

“The original Paris shop stocked an eclectic range of curios”

T

his year marks 60 years since Diptyque was founded in Paris. The original store at 34 boulevard SaintGermain still remains and is returning to its origins with a new ccollection ollection of homewares. The original shop stocked an eclectic range of curios, textiles and decorative objects alongside fragrance, and the reinvented collection, All that Decorates, reflects those roots. Now Diptique has expanded its remit to include lithographed wallpaper, ornaments in colored glass, artisanal bedspreads, ceramics and more. Diptyque’s decorative objects are imagined to enthrall the everyday by creating interiors that vibrate with life. The traditional monochrome theme creates a strong identity as this birthday celebration marks a turning point for Diptyque, bent on 'making the imaginary explode' in All that Decorates while renewing with the eclectic spirit of its roots. Beyond the universal and timeless relevance of the task lies a flair for all things artisanal. Kinetic curves, geometric gyrations and the contrast of black on white is calculated to allow the eye to indulge in optical illusions. Shapes come together and separate to reassemble once more,

ILIO FRAGRANCE

enchanting the interior of the everyday with a touch of tantalizing trompe- l’oeil. On the table, like a puzzle come to life, coasters covered in ovals transform into playful pranksters; porcelain plates parade their sumptuous volutes of Basile’s heritage pattern; goblets in Murano glass stretch spirals into ribbons reflecting a Figuier candle’s flame as it glows from a marble podium. On the shelf, near the fragrance infuser carved from the most noble stone, rectangular trinket trays are caught in an improvisation with ovals on lanterns. Halos of candlelight accentuate the gentleness of cozy geometries. Awesome in the everyday. Shapes and scents transform the table into a personal theater of wonders. Meanwhile, the summer fragrance collection includes a collaboration with Luke Edward Hall that brings colour and a mediterranean feel. The artist has designed an uncharacteristically colourful and highly collectable label for beautiful new summery fragrance Ilio. New products include a citronella candle and a mosquito-repelling body spray. Happy birthday to Diptyque. diptuqueparis.com

From beautiful bedrooms to inspiring boardrooms, every commission is custom made to order by his family firm in Sussex. We asked Claude to tell us about the benefits of his bespoke furniture.

AN INVESTMENT IN QUALITY AND CHARACTER “There is something special about owning furniture that has been handcrafted for you. Made from the finest materials and expertly fitted, it will enhance your life and your property, hold its value and be cherished for generations.”

DESIGNED BY YOU FOR YOU “All our furniture projects are designed and custom-built from scratch, whether that’s a Georgian-style library or a family boot room. We can create any look you want, including polished solid wood, real wood veneers or any colour painted finish. And the furniture will blend seamlessly into the room, as though it’s always been there, not an additional feature.”

TAILORED TO OPTIMISE THE SPACE “We’ll construct your furniture to perfectly fit the space. This is especially advantageous if you have an older property with beams or uneven walls. Bespoke fitted furniture can be any size or shape: extra tall, curved, angled – anything is possible!”

SUSTAINABLE AND LOCALLY MADE “We’re proud to make solid wood furniture that will last for hundreds of years, and we only use ethically sourced wood or reclaimed timbers. And by hiring a local maker like us reduces your furniture’s carbon footprint too.” If you value traditionally-made, ethical, contemporary or classic, original furniture over the poorly-made and massproduced, invest in better with Claude Clémaron Bespoke Wood Interiors.

PONY CAMP Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre has been promoting equine therapy for over 30 years. Absolutely pays a visit By PENDLE HARTE

S

ister Mary Joy Langdon has always sensed that horses have intuition. Before equine therapy was a thing, she recognised that being around horses can be spiritually enriching – and as part of a religious order dedicated to educating children, she is on a mission. Riding a horse, and looking after horses, can have wide-ranging benefits, particularly for children with disabilities, and at the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre she runs a pioneering programme of classes and activities that make an enormous difference to lots of lives. “I know from experience, because horses helped me,” she says. It’s a tough schedule. The pony centre is staffed by Mary Joy and one other trainer, plus a fleet of volunteers. From 7.30am to the end of the school day, school groups come to ride and groom horses, to learn stable management and to practice on the mechanical horse. After school there are clubs and riding lessons for individuals, and pony parties at weekends. There’s a

132

strong sense of activity and Mary Joy is a forceful presence, giving instructions and involved with every individual. The centre clearly revolves around her vision. Mary Joy Langdon grew up with horses in Sussex, becoming a qualified coach and riding at point to points before she gave it up to follow her calling and join what she calls “a small international congregation”. In other words, she became a nun. “I had given up horses to enter religious life,” she says. She is part of the Sisters of the Infant Jesus, a Catholic institution founded in France in 1666 with the aim of educating underpriviliged schoolchildren, and this defines her vocation here in Wormwood Scrubs, at the centre she founded in 1989. Her career has been varied, even taking in a spell of about seven years as a firefighter when the drought of 1976 inspired her to sign up and become the first operational female firefighter in Sussex, before she returned to horses in the context of her calling. “My aim was to set up a small community riding school for people with special educational needs,” she says, “because I could always see the value of what horses

could do for people with learning difficulties or physical disabilities.” She wasn’t academic at school and believes that now she would have been diagnosed with ‘severe dyslexia’. “Horses can help children learn and develop. Riding can be the catalyst for beginning to achieve in all areas and horses can help people’s self-esteem. I know from experience, because horses helped me. I liken horses to dolphins, for their intuition and the way that personal contact with them can be enriching and spiritual.” One of her horses in particular, she says, has the power to make anyone visiting its stable come out feeling strengthened. Children

come to the centre not just with physical or learning disabilities but also with severe psychological damage, and for them, she says, “time spent with ponies is supportive and positive.” Alarmingly, she believes that there’s more need for places like this now than there was 30 years ago. “Even if we had five centres there wouldn’t be enough. There are so many damaged children.” How is the centre funded? “By a miracle, I’d say.” Money is of course an ongoing struggle for the centre, though a loyal following is energetic in organising events and fundraisers. A recent Zoom race night raised £5,000, and a sponsored walk

is planned for 3 July. One unlikely fan of the centre was Lucian Freud, who would quietly come to draw horses, initially unrecognised by Mary Joy. When she noticed him, she gave him a beginners’ guide to drawing horses. They became friends and in 2019 she auctioned a sketch of his for £40,000, parting with it reluctantly to raise funds for the centre. It’s a centre that makes an enormous difference to lots of lives and Sister Mary Joy is an impressive character, working intuitively and tirelessly. wormwoodscrubsponycentre.org A B S O L U T E LY. n April 2020 The Moat Sixth Form was just a few months away from opening its doors to become central London’s first dyslexia specialist sixth form. There is a global pandemic in full effect, and businesses and industries in disarray around the country, however, alongside sixth form building work, recruiting staff and enrolling students, they needed to build links within their community to try to help get their young people work experience and become part of the return to normality in Hammersmith and Fulham. Finding businesses who will open the door for work experience is a challenge at the best of times, and they can often feel the door close at the first mention of supporting their neurodiverse young people who can find change, unfamiliar routines, new staff and anxieties a daily struggle. All of this factors into why there are so few neurodiverse adults in employment in the country, but that is something Moat want to play a role in changing; by exploring and

How The Moat Sixth Form didn’t let a pandemic prevent students from experiencing the jobs market

supporting local businesses and companies with their talented, unique and highly intelligent young people, with the capacity to think outside the box and become an instrumental part of any business or project. With this in mind The Moat Sixth Form incorporates a robust work experience programme alongside its curriculum. Dedicated timetable space is made each week for pupils to work in the community within a multitude of businesses. The Moat Sixth Form believes academic and life skills go hand in hand to create well rounded young people ready to move forward in the world. The Music House For Children has proven to be the perfect setting to begin an exciting journey of offering The Moat Sixth Form students the opportunity to build their employability skills. There are only so many life and employability skills that can be embedded in a classroom or a virtual classroom. For The Moat Sixth Form to be truly successful, they need to ensure their

students gain important life skills and work experience alongside their academic studies. Fast forward to August 2021 and the relationship between The Moat Sixth Form and Music House has blossomed further and expanded to include Bush Hall and Next Door Records. Media, business and performing arts students are gaining experience with Bush Hall sound and lighting technicians and having masterclasses in marketing and venue management. Childcare students are assisting toddler and baby music classes run by the Music House, and some of their most work ready students are building their skills behind the bar and in the stock room of Next Door Records. Community and building connections within those communities has always been important and this shows what can be achieved at the most difficult of times when we support each other. moatsixthform.org.uk A B S O L U T E LY. NATURE How Eaton Square Schools value nature and the outdoors

I

By EVE HERBERT

f the past year has taught us anything, it is the immense value of the great outdoors. Given recent restrictions, the intellectual, social, emotional and physical benefits of outdoor life have never been felt so keenly. Naturally, when choosing their child’s education, many urban families ask: ‘How do you achieve this in a London school?’ Eaton Square Schools has the answer. An impressive group of nursery schools, prep and senior school, with a new Sixth Form set to open in September 2022, each is based across superb premises in Belgravia, Mayfair and Pimlico,

138

all enjoying enviable access to outdoor space. At Eaton Square, pupils aged two to 16 thrive in a school environment that notably recognises, and champions, the importance of nature. Impressively for its central London location, Eaton Square Prep School has achieved Bronze Level Eco-School status, as irrefutable proof of how the school actively strives to protect the planet. Driven by a pupil-led eco committee, pupils embrace popular year-round initiatives, including the flourishing gardening club, picking up litter on Eccleston Square, bird-watching and creative upcycling projects.

“The innovative new nursery is inspired by the English countryside”

EDUCATION • FOCUS

Headmistress Trish Watts says: “I am consistently impressed and delighted by our pupils’ environmental efforts. In the past few weeks alone, they’ve dressed as bees to support World Bee Day, embraced all aspects of Walk to School Week and partcipated in a terrific Water Workshop given by Thames Water. The developmental benefits of these eco-initiatives, both to pupils and to our surrounding environment, renders them an ongoing priority in our school calendar.” Aside from enjoying daily walks and activities in the nearby Royal Parks, Eaton Square Nursery Schools have an innovative plan in store for championing the power of nature. This September, they launch a brand new nursery in Eccleston Square, inspired by the English countryside and designed by House of Kin interior designers. Located on the ground floor of the Prep school building, learning through play will be a priority and the child-centred environment will offer interactive features, natural materials and even a three-storey tree house and beehive. The entire design is carefully created to develop maths skills, fine motor skills, phonics and an understanding of space and shape. E ATO N S Q UA R E S C H O O L eatonsquareschools.com

TALK I N G

HEAD

Flexible FUTURE

New ways of educating students are needed to meet the needs of global families, says the Head of Lycée International de Londres Winston Churchill

T

here’s little doubt the pandemic has changed education forever. Of course, the traditional school model will continue to predominate, with students and teachers meeting on campus for in-person learning. But the need for COVID-19 lockdowns and online instruction during the crisis demonstrated the vulnerability of face-to-face education during emergencies and the necessity – and difficulty – of replicating it remotely. The lesson for the future is that schools must continually innovate to deliver their missions by whatever means during turbulent times. Lycée International de Londres Winston Churchill navigated the 2020 and winter 2021 shutdowns thanks to technology, culture, and community. Since its 2015 founding, the school has made smart use of digital tools to enhance education and streamline administration. That solid technical base, overlayed with dedicated staff, engaged parents and a collaborative framework, smoothed the transition to learning from home. Students followed predictable schedules, with lessons delivered by live video and plenty of opportunity for online group interaction. The approach was to lead by example. Located on a five-acre campus in north London, Lycée Churchill is a co-ed independent and bilingual school serving 850 students aged 3 to 18. It offers both the English-language IB Diploma and the French baccalauréat. With 100% pass rates on tough

French exams and matriculation of graduates to top universities, such as Cambridge, McGill, US Ivy League and French Classes Préparatoires. With young people from 45 countries and teachers and staff of 29 different nationalities, there is a strong focus on the needs of individual students within a vibrant international environment. The educational ethos

“The best schools aren’t waiting for the next crisis, but preparing now for a world in which students and families need flexible approaches to learning”

combines traditional disciplines with initiative, exploration, critical thinking, teamwork, and individual development. Students learn to be curious and open, to ask tough questions, and to express their ideas with confidence. Since the pandemic, Lycée Churchill has facilitated additional forms of off-campus learning. “LIL Remote LIL” is aimed at students who cannot come to the school for short periods of time (usually due to travel quarantines), enabling them to stay abreast of their peers while isolating at home. The pioneering “LIL Online” is a full remote education and virtual classroom programme for students who cannot or do not want to attend school in person. The school also helps students aged 16 and above who wish to study in London but whose families cannot be there by providing extra support services. In unpredictable times, the last thing parents want to worry about is the continuity of their children’s education. The best schools aren’t waiting for the next crisis to happen but instead preparing now for a world in which students and their families need flexible approaches to learning. The legacy of the pandemic will require nothing less. PUPILS AT LYCÉE CHURCHILL

ADVENTURES You don’t have to travel to have an adventure. Here’s our guide to brilliant escapes you can plan at or close to home this summer

Wo r d s L O U I SA RU S S E L L

144

dventures don’t only happen in far flung places, good news in a year when many more of us will be doing a ‘stay vay’. Children are, on the whole, much easier to entertain than we adults – enjoying things with fresh eyes all the time, but especially when we put a creative spin on the places and opportunities closer to home. Our pick of six ideas are perfect for young planners and adventurers, combining new twists and familiar turf to make memorable family activities over the long summer break. They don’t even require good weather.

1. Map your manor There are estimated to be 140,000 miles (225,000km) of public rights of way in England and Wales alone, with over 9,000 miles more if you include Scotland. This network of footpaths, bridleways and ancient rights of way criss-crosses every part of the country, urban and rural, and so the chances are you have lots of ‘unnavigated’ terrain to explore in your area. Ordnance Survey (OS) now

produces customised Explorer and Landranger maps – a brilliant idea as you can order a map that places your home right in the centre and see all the footpaths within a reasonable radius. This is the perfect challenge for young explorers – lasting all summer long as they tick off the footpaths they’ve navigated, as well as the other local points of interest worth exploring, such as nature reserves. You can buy the map folded or flat to take with you or as a large-scale canvas to hang on the wall. OS personalised maps from £16.99. Canvas wall maps from £149.99; shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/custom-made

2. Set up camp Camping trips are great, but it takes so much advance planning to pitch your tent in summer. One way to bypass that is to let the children set up camp in the garden. This provides a shady place for them to create a den and make a noise away from you – even better when they invite friends round for camp-out social time. The Original Den Company makes great den kits for creative play. Alternatively, buy a cheap lightweight tent (Aldi, Argos and Blacks all have budget options). You may decide they are old enough for a camp out in the garden overnight with friends. If so, just remember to buy in lots of baked beans for midnight feasts and bank on not getting too much rest yourself. Den kits from The Den Kit Company, from £40; thedenkitco.com

ENJOY A WILD SWIM

3. Go wild swimming Wild swimming is becoming really popular, and as a result there are more places opening up all the time. It’s an experience that feels totally different to the chlorine and regimented lanes of a traditional swimming pool. Wild swimming locations include beaches, lakes, rivers and quarries. People do get somewhat confused by the term ‘wild’ – often it’s quite organised, and with plenty of guidance for newbies. Safety is always paramount, so your best starting point is the Outdoor Swimming Society, which gives essential guidance as well as information on how to get started, useful kit and local groups up and down the country who can help you plan your first wild swim. outdoorswimmingsociety.com

4. Dig some archaeology Maybe it’s that wonderful film The Dig or TV’s Detectorist’s, but archaeology seems anything but buried right now. To young minds it’s all about finding treasure and, while that's rarely discovered, there’s still lots to uncover. The Young Archaeologists’ Club, part of the Council for British Archaeology, has brilliant activities to fire their imaginations. There are over 70 YACs across the UK where kids can get involved in meet-ups – looking at finds and even going on digs. Also check out the annual Festival of Archaeology beginning in July (this year’s theme: Exploring Local Places) and ask for information at your local museums, which often have the inside track on archaeology events. If you have enough space, get your children to organise a ‘mini dig’ in the garden – also a useful way to clear that patch of ground for a new vegetable bed! yac-uk.org and festival.archaeologyuk.org

5. Marvel at your minibeasts There is wildlife in even the tiniest back garden or terrace, but the universal advice if you want more is to add a water feature. There are multiple guides to help you online. You need very little space – even an old washing up bowl will do. It’s a great opportunity to be creative though, so get your children to think outside the box (or bowl), when it comes to location and planting

in and around the feature. Adding in ramps to help wildlife get in and out is essential. Once the water feature gets going, mini-beast safaris can happen every day of summer. Our favourite guides to creating a wildlife pond large or small are available at froglife.org and rspb.org

6. Escape to the beach Heading for the beach can be a mug’s game on a hot summer’s day, but choose wisely – with both weather and location – and you have all the exhilaration of negative ions without the trauma of traffic jams, sunburn, supercharged seagulls and finding a spot to spread out. We recommend you pick a day when the temperature is lower – even forecast as showery – and then head for a coastal spot that has few to no typical seaside attractions. thebeachguide.co.uk BUILD A POND AND THEY WILL COME

5 Adventure TIPS 1. Plan ahead and sell the idea to your children – anticipation is all. • 2. Get them involved by listening to their ideas – be prepared to deviate from plan. • 3. Add in surprise elements, such as special kit made or bought for the adventure. • 4. Live by the Canadian motto: no such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothes. • 5. Never scrimp on food and drink – picnics transform days out into proper expeditions. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

STROLL Venicci’s new Turisso is a solid all-rounder

N

ew to the Vennici family, the Turisso is by all accounts a solid allrounder that won’t break the bank. There are many features to this model that are akin to Venicci’s premium travel system, the Tinum 2.0 and for £230 less, it certainly packs a punch. Retailing at £599 for a 2 in 1 travel system, this is a great buy and will certainly disrupt the mid-level market point. The chassis is lightweight aluminum and the solid wheels are a good size for most

terrains making the pushability smooth for both you and baby. The fabric comes in 6 different colour ways, offering quilted detail to both the apron and the interior of the carrycot. As with all venicci prams the carrycot comes with a plush quilted mattress that is tapered to one end and our little road tester Seb could not have been happier. Now that summer's here, we really got to try out the panoramic ventilation located at the back of the carrycot hood which was great. It certainly helps with air circulation, keeping your little one cool on those sunny days. The SPF 50+ hood is fully extendable too which is another great feature taken from the Tinum2.0 and provides ample shade on both the carrycot and seat unit. Whilst the footmuff is not quite as cosy as theTtinum 2.0 and the printed logo are not as high end as the metallic logos and tags on other versions, there are tons of great premium touches to the seat unit such as the magnetic peek-aboo window flap, leatherette handle on the chassi and even a secret pocket. The basket is fairly roomy and the changing bag completely unzips to reveal a

mat, saving you having to pack additional kit. The bag also sits nicely on the little hooks built into the chassis so it doesn’t slide around. The fold is relatively easy to figure out and when in its folded position simply lock the front wheels to allow the chassis to stand unaided which is a handy little feature. All in all it is a great product and for the price tag we are hard pressed to find much we disliked about it.

he first night I strapped my newborn into the SNOO I’ll admit I felt a bit apprehensive. Connected to an app, the WiFi-enabled cot responds to your little one’s cries, rocking and playing white noise to send them off to sleep. I watched as the bed swayed, my tiny baby strapped down and zipped into the swaddle. The high-tech design (and the swaddle) took a bit of getting used to, but after a few nights it quickly became apparent why other parents rave about the SNOO so much. Firstly, it’s one of the safest infant beds on the market, keeping your baby in the lie-flat position to help prevent SIDS. Secondly, the rocking, the swaddle, and the white noise cleverly mimic the womb – which in our case magically helped to settle a colicky baby. As

first-time parents, we also loved the fact that the app keeps track of your baby’s sleep and also sends you sleep advice – which proved to be a sanity-saver in those first few weeks. Believe the hype, this cot really does have it all – style, safety and the ability to give everyone a good night’s sleep. Snoo Smart Sleeper £1145; happiestbaby.co.uk

he new compact that’s not just for travel. For years now I have been on the look out for a truly lightweight travel system that has style and substance so I was delighted when the new Leclerc Influencer landed on my doormat. New to the UK this Dutch brand is making waves in its category and we are delighted to say it ticks every box. From all the prams I have used, over the last 10 years, the Influencer is by far the easiest and quickest to open and close with one hand. It has a storage bag that you would normally use for travel purposes but it is so easy to use that it makes sense to keep your shiny new pram looking pristine like a designer handbag in a dust bag. At just 6.6 kgs its super lightweight and easy to push, and the wheels are on the smaller side so it’s best placed for an urban setting. Compared to other lightweight products on the market, the seat unit is surprisingly wide, which will give your little one room to move as they grow and the push bar is taller than most fixed options too. Stylish accessories for include a cup holder, rain cover in its own little bag, and colour coded storage tidies and changing bag.

UK GETAWAY

Birch

Zoey Goto took her two children for a back-to-nature retreat at the recently opened Birch Community

The Hotel

P

art hip hotel, part members club and coworking space, Birch has become a hotspot for city folks seeking a serious dose of country living. This former hunting lodge, set on a sprawling 55-acre estate in Hertfordshire, is within sprinting distance of London - with nearby Cheshunt Station just a 30-minute journey from Liverpool Street Station. Although Birch may sound intimidatingly cool as a concept, I was relieved to find that it’s actually refreshingly familyfriendly. Kids are free to run wild in the meadows, collect eggs from the onsite farm (Farmer Tom is a legend and hive of information) or sit back in deckchairs and catch a film in the screening room. The hotel has a relaxed, almost festival-like vibe and thankfully no one seems to mind if little people are traipsing mud through the rustic-chic interiors.

The Restaurant

The Room

T

here are 140 rooms throughout the hotel, spread out across the main house and a more recent additional wing. We stayed in a family room with a generously sized double bed and lovely carved wood bunk beds for the children. All guest rooms at Birch are consciously minimal but comfortable. In many ways the simplicity of the rooms makes for a more zen stay with children, as breakages are less likely. However, note that there’s no tea of coffee making facilities in the room, so you’ll need to wander down to the onsite café for drinks.

T

he main culinary event at Birch is the tasting menu at the Zebra Riding Club restaurant, founded by farm-to-table pioneer Robin Gill. However, the more relaxed choice for families is the outdoor tipi restaurant, lit with fairy lights and situated in a meadow dotted with hammocks. It’s unfussy food made from quality ingredients, and there’s a special kid’s menu with mini-me versions of the adult meals.

Activities

I

t’s all about creating experiences at Birch, with a jam-packed schedule of classes and one-off events for adults including alfresco yoga, glass blowing, pottery workshops and

sourdough making sessions. Kids are also kept busy as during school holidays there’s an extensive rota of crafts and nature-based activities. Each Saturday throughout the year, Birch also runs the Young Adventurers Club, with three sessions a day lasting 1.45 hours each (£25 per child). This was the absolute highlight of our stay and my children adored toasting marshmallows over a campfire, cooking nettles (they lose their sting when heated – who knew?!) building a bird’s nest and playing in the mud kitchen. Just don’t forget to pack wellies and waterproofs, as it all gets wonderfully mucky. Post lockdown, Birch was the re-wilding experience that my city kids, and I, had been longing for.

Sheepskin isn't only for winter, says Baa Baby

B

aa Baby's ethically sourced baby sheepskin wraps your little one in care, kindness and the simplicity of nature. Say goodbye to those sweaty pram journeys and sleepless nights. Choosing sheepskin for your baby isn’t just a beautiful photo opportunity (though who can resist tiny toes on sumptuous lambskin?) – it is so much more than a soft fluffy rug. Baa Baby are the experts when it comes to sheepskin for your little one. While most of us associate sheepskin with winter, it is in fact naturally thermostatic, so it's wonderfully cool in summer too. This has led to many parents seeking out sheepskin pram and cot liners to help regulate temperature and settle their babies to sleep. The fibres are breathable and specially constructed to increase airflow and trap moisture – say goodbye to those sweaty pram journeys and restless nights. The benefits of sheepskin for baby don’t just stop there. Sheepskin is naturally moisturising thanks to the lanolin in the fleece which helps to soothe skin and it can calm children with eczema.

152

Studies have shown that using sheepskin reduces allergy-related conditions such as asthma in babies and young children. Baa Baby is a natural brand that has customer care and quality at the heart. Their own luxury pram liners are hand-cut from single fleeces right here in the UK – there’s no nasty stitching or patchwork and with their eco-tanning procedures they are super safe and chrome-free. The brand has won the Lux Life award for Best UK Sheepskin Baby Brand in 2020 and their pram liners have recently won the prestigious Loved by Parents 2021 awards for Best Pushchair Accessory and Best Baby Shower Gift. Baa Baby have been around a while – specialising in ethically sourced sheepskin

“All their sheepskin

comes from freeroaming flock ” from around the world for over 14 years. All sheepskin they use is from free-roaming flock and is a by-product of the meat industry. With over 90% of sheepskin destroyed each year, using this natural fibre in this way doesn’t only support the health and wellbeing of your baby but will also help support the natural resources of the planet. Sheepskin, when well cared for, should last a lifetime – but if you have decided the time has come to dispose of it then it naturally decomposes within a year. Faux sheepskin and fibres on the other hand take over 40 years to break down. If you are looking for a unique baby shower gift, or a natural baby product that has an array of wellbeing benefits, then look no further than Baa Baby. baababy.co.uk
