appy new year to everyone. January may feel like a bleak month but all over west London there are things to celebrate, and Absolutely is dedicated to seeking them out. This month we’ve been asking everybody about their plans for 2012 and apart from the predictable (get fitter, eat healthily, give up smoking/ drinking/chocolate) we’ve got some quite interesting answers. Lots of people’s thoughts turn to selfimprovememnt and acquiring new skills at this time of year – and the ever-innovative people at The Idler Academy have identified learning the ukulele as the coolest new hobby for 2012. They are offering lessons in Westbourne Park Road – and this is a skill that no amount of gobal financial meltdown can take away from you.

Idler founder Tom Hodgkinson is also rumoured to be a dab hand at building ukuleles out of the most unlikely materials, so if times get really tough he will always be able to upcycle something to strum. More courses and clubs can be found at the ever-evolving Tabernacle in Powis Square, which we focus on in this issue, discovering that there are more things going on in a single day there than in any other single venue in the world (possibly – or certainly in W11), ranging from ballet for tots to Capoeira to cabaret in a jam-packed programme that’s set to expand even further in 2012. Also this month we have a special spotlight on Kensington and the usual mix of local people, places and events.

Meetings in Marrakech: the paintings of Hassan El Glaoui and Winston Churchill From 20 JanuarY LEIGHTON HOUSE MUSEUM Sir Winston Churchill, Britain’s war-time Prime Minister, was also an accomplished landscape painter. He first visited Marrakech in 1935 and developed a lasting affection for the city, which he considered “one of the loveliest spots in the whole world”.

It was at Churchill’s behest that El Glaoui was encouraged to paint and to bcome one of Morocco’s most significant artists. Here works by the two artists are shown together for the first time.

liBrary BloW The High Court’s decision to reject the legal challenge against Brent’s determination to close Kensal Rise Library is a blow to the people of Kensal Rise. But for the tireless campaigners who have kept a vigil outside the library since October, and are running a people’s pop up library there, the battle continues.

The library campaign has had much high-profile support and attracted lots of media attention with figures including Alan Bennett, Zadie Smith, Jacqueline Wilson, Philip Pullman, Alexei Sayle and Nick Cave aligning themselves to the movement.

Margaret Bailey, who occupied the

library when it was threatened with closure in 1988, and is co-chair of the current campaign, told Absolutely: “Although the court judgment was disappointing, the library campaign is determined to continue the fight to save the library. We are sorry the judges decided in Brent’s favour and disregarded a very important principle which is relevant to all local authorities throughout England. Local authorities in England need to be mindful of their duties when they decide to make cuts to services. Duties exist for a reason, and that is why they are protected in law. A disregard of these duties using the excuse of ‘cuts’ or ‘austere times’ means that councils can now make

PortoBello entrePreneurs Two young entrepreneurs are looking forward to trading on Portobello Market after being named winners of the Royal Borough’s Market Enterprise Launch Pad 2011.

Jo Hawtree, who is starting a men’s fashion label called Gunsmoke & Lavender and Emily Ellen Dell, who sells bespoke art on canvas under the name Girl on a Swing, have each won £1,000 in start-up funds, six months’ rentfree market stall space on Portobello Market, a support package from the Prince’s Trust and free business

insurance. The project was funded by the John Lyon’s Charity and run by the Council’s Education Partnership Team. Seven young entrepreneurs were selected to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges, including representatives from the Council, the homeware designer Cath Kidston, Circle Sports, the Prince’s Trust, John Lyon’s Charity. Cllr Nick Paget-Brown, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “I know that a stall on the Portobello Market has been the springboard that has helped launch successful businesses in the past.”

The campaign has presented Brent Council with a proposal whereby the library could be kept open entirely by volunteers, at no cost to Brent. Bailey says: “If they don’t want to run the library, we’re prepared to take on that task.”

emi Fem knows everybody. He’s a popular man – it comes with the territory. Providing the people of west London and further afield with music to party to for more than 20 years makes a person a lot of friends. He’s warm and friendly too – not jaded by the years of late nights – and his enthusiasm for music has been a lifelong theme. “Doing parties connects you to a place and you know lots of people. You provide that service for people you become their friend and they like you,” he tells me over coffee in W10.

“My friends laugh and say that I always work in the same square mile,” says Femi – because his new job takes him right back to the spot where he worked years ago. Femi’s Friday night Rotation was a longrunning night in the 1990s, when the club under the Westway was still Subterania. And it was at a Rotation reunion on the same site in 2009 that his new job was born – meeting the club’s new owners led to Femi becoming Musical Director of what is now Supperclub. He says this with a smirk. Doesn’t he like the title?

“I like it but I think it’s funny,” he says. The corporate-sounding gig is a world away from the spontaneous world of illegal warehouse parties he was running in the 80s – or at least the job title is. Supperclub, he says, has a new energy all of its own.

“A friend of mine came the other day and he said it was like New York in the 80s. I see the London 80s warehouse scene in it – eclectic, gay, multicultural, sexy energy, musically very sound.”

Having grown up in Ealing in a family originally from Sierra Leone, Femi was involved in Norman Jay’s famed Shake and Fingerpop parties in the late 1980s and shot to fame in 1990 with the Young Disciples.

The band made a big splash with singer Carleen Anderson but split up after just one album, Road to Freedom – due, Femi says, to the record company’s lack of understanding. The Young Disciples were part of a burgeoning acid jazz scene and paved the way for DJ 17

acts such as Basement Jaxx and bands such as Jamiroquai and the Brand New Heavies, all of whom have always been friends – “but the record company didn’t know what to do with us. They had no idea of the force of it. We were signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin Loud which marketed itself cleverly to make it seem like an independent but actually it was part of Mercury, which is part of Universal.” And they failed to sign Carleen Andersen despite her being “an awesome singer/songwriter all round.” Would they have carried on if the label had behaved differently? “Definitely,” says Femi. “It was a travesty.

They deleted the record and I bought the bootleg of my own tune.”

But he and Peterson are still friends.

“I saw him the other day and he said, when are we doing a reissue? which he says quite often, but I still kind of believe him.”

Despite it all, the band established

Fast forward to 2011 and blackwalled Subterania has morphed into white-walled Supperclub (after several years as Neighbourhood in between) and Femi is back on site. How has it changed? “It still feels here like that multicultural London I grew up in, the Kensington and Chelsea side mixing with the Harlesden energy,” says Femi. Supperclub is a different kind of venue altogether, with its programme of surreal/dangerous/ explicit cabaret that ranges from live blood drinking to pole dancing with a difference, all watched by a supine audience eating dinner on white beds. It’s a concept that started in Amsterdam 20 years ago and has spawned a global chain of Supperclubs. Creative director Mathius Scibor says: “Every night is unique. It’s important to be receptive, be ready to notice art in the toilets, maybe there will be something hidden under your pillow or one of your friends will go missing for

“It was pretty much staple for people on a Friday night – before hiphop and r&b became pop, so it was kind of cool. Everyone came. Snoop, A Tripe called Quest, The Fugees, Bjork came when she was with Goldie. Prince came. One night the lights went up and there was this guy in the middle of the dancefloor wondering why’s it all over – he just looked like a normal guy but it was Spike Lee. Artists used to come over and be taken to lots of polite places in the West End by the record companies, then they’d have a drink and say, where can we really go? It’s different now – people pay for them to be places now.” Rotation lasted the best part of a decade and was never forgotten.

So who goes there? “There’s the Dutch base and a continental feel, and the young rich crowd which has always been there – and there are different nights. Swankys is like Ibiza, with lots of young people with their tops off (I make sure I’m not there then). The average crowd includes a lot of young professionals – it’s the main venue in west London and people have always made the journey.” For 2012 Femi is working on a Supperclub London CD with Russell Jay (Norman Jay’s son) and Sam Hanbali. The club’s owners, brothers Mark and Paul Cutler, are unusual in the world of club owners, says Femi (“they’re investors but they actually know about partying – basically they are hardcore ravers with a business plan”).

These days, Femi is a family man who lives in Queens Park with his wife and two children – and he’s got a lot to say on the subject of schools – but his new residency at Supperclub keeps a lot of the old spirit alive. Go Femi. t

raDical Print Artist and famous anarchist Jamie Reid (known for the Sex Pistols’ seminal Never Mind the Bollocks artwork) is the latest name to be linked to the unstoppable Save Kensal Rise Library campaign. Due to popular demand, they are launching their first ever ukulele course, taught by Danny Wootton who has played ukulele for Razorlight. ho knew that Ken Russell started his illustrious career on the streets of W11? During the 1950s, the eccentric filmmaker could be found working in Notting Hill as a street photographer, snapping the area’s new West Indian community and the local youth. Because un oeuf is enough and I’m sure we have all had enough of the political, moral and immoral bankruptcy that has become endemic. Something radical has to be done. I propose to run for mayor of London under the Karma banner. The essence of the manifesto will be peace, love, compassion and pudding because you’ve got to have something sweet in there too. All local issues will be worked out in the next week and anyone wishing to come on board should contact me. The Powis Square Tabernacle is many things to many people. Absolutely gets an overview

T

he Tabernacle defies definition. Over the course of its life, it has been variously, a church, a community centre and a commercial venue. And now it could be said to be all of those things at once. It’s also a landmark, included in the cabbies’ Knowledge and a building that has seen its surroundings change many times since it first opened in 1869.

A typical day at the Tabernacle could start with a toddler singsong at 8.30am, followed by a yoga class, during which delegates for a conference could arrive, and people will be having breakfast in the café.

Later there might be a Buddhist meeting, a life drawing class, a Capoeira club, a rehearsal for the Mangrove steel band, a free lunch for the elderly and a children’s ballet lesson. There will probably be an exhibition opening in the gallery, and possibly an Intelligence Squared debate or a 5x15 talk while a film crew shoots a commercial elsewhere in the building. In the evening there might be a gig – whether a quirky local combo or a household name such as KT Tunstall or Florence Welch – or a cabaret (Medium Rare visited last month) or Bookslam (a literary club night). There will be diners in the restaurant and people

There’s never a dull moment.

The original ‘old tin Talbot Tabernacle’ opened in the 1869, a temporary iron church with a capacity of 1,000 people and the present building dates back to 1887.

It was in use as a church until the mid 20th century, when it became a community centre throughout Notting Hill’s troubled 1950s. It was pretty much disused before the building was squatted in 1973

and campaigners fought for it to became a community arts centre, associated with names including Joe Strummer and the Clash, as well as the London Free School, Pink Floyd, Hawkwind and other local bands.

It has a long-standing relationship with Carnival and is now managed by the Carnival Village trust.

For energetic and passionate general manager Christopher Scholey, the building has a life of its own (and she’s female). “We’ve got

to keep her open because this is the kind of place people want to come,” he says – and keeping her open is not so simple. The grant from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea barely covers its utility bills.

The Tabernacle has one bankrupt, closed down and reopened many times in the past. “We’re inclusive and our footfall is always growing,” says Scholey. “And she’ll almost close the door to protect herself.”

Scholey has enormous respect

for the building and what it can become, and he’s keen to make the programme as diverse as possible.

Chief executive of Carnival Village David Elford adds: “the Tabernacle provides a vibrant centre which is also home to the Association of British Calypsonians and Mangrove

steelband. The Tab has a broad approach to arts programming and the venue is widely used for community initiatives for which it is an essential resource.”

Basements that’s what you’ll find; hundreds of them, all over London.

There are so many basements being built around London that you would be forgiven for thinking we are becoming a subterranean species.

Some high profile celebrities are so against them, when even more of the glitterati are having them built.

So, we thought we would ask our old sparring partner, Steven McDicken from Metropolitan Basements, to justify the upheaval, the digging , the dirt and the bad press!

Why do people hate basements?

The only people who hate basements are the ones that don’t need them. Everybody else I know loves them.

So… why do people love basements?

Simple… more space! and at a fraction of the cost of moving home.

At a fraction of the cost… please explain?

Well if you wanted to move home it would cost you say £800 to £1500 per square foot for that extra floor space and if you build a basement it only costs you, £400 per square foot including the VAT. In fact, what you would save on the stamp duty you have to pay when moving house, goes a long way to buying a large part of your basement!

So are you saying it’s purely for money?

No… more space!

But, by doing so you just happen to create rather a lot of equity in your home. It ‘coincidently’ makes good financial sense. Unless you just sell it on, of course.

What about the bad press?

People will always be people; they will make a mountain out of a basement, then they will turn around and build one themselves.

No one wants to live next door to a basement being dug… the noise for a start, do you think they will ban them eventually?

They can’t, they’re largely permitted development and you can’t see them.

As for the noise, they are no less noisy than digging your garden and they are a million times quieter than someone digging up the road. Traffic noise in London is more than the sound of a basement being dug.

Anyway, we work 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, when everybody is at work.

There is no reason why it should be. Except listed buildings and even then it can be done.

Depends on the size but let’s say 1220 weeks for the majority of houses in London.

Who designs them?

We have an architect who is rather experienced with them. He wrote a book: Architect Your Home by Hugo Tugman. There is a section in there all about basements too. You can buy it from www.anovabooks.com Don’t be put off by his picture, he is actually one of the nicest architects I’ve ever met.

So what’s your parting shot to the basement critics and lovers alike?

Well, not a parting shot - just a statement that the majority of people will eventually get a basement dug to gain that extra space, especially in the more affluent areas of London. Even if you are against it now, you will succumb in the months or years to come or the people that move into your house after you are gone will get one done.

It’s just going to happen, like it or not, and it’s going to be widespread, just in the same way double glazing stated in the 70’s, but much less intrusive or visible because it’s underground!

M

ost Londoners would say they love Victorian houses.

Certainly many of us live in them, but there’s an established trend of remodelling and extending them beyond recognition, making them effectively modern houses behind Victorian facades. Our lives are different to 19th century lives and our homes need to reflect this. That’s the thinking behind Solidspace, an organisation that’s out to prove the advantages of the self-build home. And their showpiece is a stylish family home in Queen’s Park, an unmissable white box that stands out against streets of Victorian terraces (most of them extended, of course).

This is the Zog house, named for its owner and Solidspace founder Gus Zogolovitch. It is an unusual structure because of its split-level, open-plan spaces – there are five half levels on a site that has a similar footprint to its neighbouring Victorian counterparts. “Victorian houses are leaky, draughty and unenvironmental,” says Zogolovitch, “and their floorplan is designed for a society of the 19th century. We are much more social and more integrated with our children.” So we live differently, with less need for rigidly defined, separate spaces.

Instead of the Victorian cluster of small rooms, his Zog house offers linked spaces, so people can be eating in the kitchen while children play in the living room within sight and earshot, separated only by a few steps. Zogolovitch can work at his desk on a mezzanine level overlooking the living room, feeling connected while retaining some privacy – “and since there are no corridors, there’s no trapped and wasted light,” he says. It all makes sense, and with big windows (triple glazed and imported from Austria) there’s much more light than an unreconstructed 19th century terrace could ever have.

His plot, in a desirable part of NW6, was an unused car parking space until Solidspace bought it at auction a few years ago. If you know what to look for, says Zogolovitch, there are lots of plots around, even in London, but “even though everybody loves Grand Designs, there’s automatic nimbysim” where new builds on their doorstep are concerned, he says. So getting planning permission proved tricky, but now

the initially anxious neighbours love the house, and it is a popular destination in the annual London Open House calendar.

Zog House is made from prefabricated slabs of concrete imported from Germany and put together

by German builders (British ones, according to Zogolovitch, couldn’t understand the concept of the half levels). The design is flexible in that it could go taller; the Zog House has five half levels and is as tall as its surrounding houses, but the formula could be extended.

As the prototype, it works as a showhome for Solidspace, which both develops sites to sell and partners individuals interested in building their own homes. The splitlevel model can be recreated to suit varying requirements and with the government keen to encourage selfbuilds, this could really be the house of the future. t Zog House’s basement is a self-contained one bedroom apartment available for short lets (www.zoghouse.moonfruit.com)

Positive spirit From Czech witches and ancient folklore straight to Kensal Rise, Katie Randall talks about the exciting birth of Babička vodka with founding brothers Alex and Ed Clarke

A

breath of fresh air for the premium vodka market, Babička (pronounced ‘Babitchka’) is the brainchild of former bar manager and west Londoner Alex Clarke – and the brand is quickly gaining momentum in the global market We sat down to chat in one of his favourite local hangouts, The Chamberlayne, and with Alex’s investor and brother Ed Clarke in tow, we got straight to talking about the witches.

The brand’s name, Babička, derives from Czech potion makers or ‘wise grandmothers’. During the 16th century these women were saved from a fiery death on the stake because of their healing skills. They

used the ‘magical’ properties of ingredients such as wormwood – and Clarke followed their lead in creating his own unique blend of vodka.

Smooth and infused with flavour, this premium drink is already being used in one of the most popular cocktails at the exclusive China Tang bar at The Dorchester.

Artemisia absinthium, or wormwood, was the buzzword in our conversation. It is this bitter plant, aesthetically similar to parsley, that is the active ingredient in the vodka. The herb is rumoured to have aphrodisiac and hallucinogenic properties, which could explain why the Babičkas used extracts in their potions – because it made people feel good. Alex explains that the plant is also a natural digestive.

The brew is made via six individual distillation steps. First the corn is fermented and distilled three times; separately to this coriander, star anise, fennel and the all-important wormwood are macerated and then distilled twice. The sixth step is to add 57

“A lot of vodka is made and bottled in a week. Our process takes two and a half months the ingredients together before the mixture gets distilled for the final time. At this point the vodka is put through cold filtration to further refine its taste and and draw out the very last impurities. For Babička another vital ingredient is time: they let their vodka rest for two months in a vat to add thickness and make the drink more viscous. Alex says: “A lot of vodka is made and bottled in a week. Our process takes two and a half months, that’s how you get that flavour.”

This means that Babička vodka can be enjoyed neat or blended in cocktails and the distinctive taste still shines through. Personally, Alex enjoys it neat in a tumbler glass with a smattering of ice and an olive. The Babička boys reveal that they have several favourite watering holes in which to sup a good drink. They recommend Chamberlayne Road’s The Shop, who serve a great Babička cocktail in a milk bottle; the cosy Portobello Star on Portobello Road and The Salusbury.

Working and living in Kensal Rise, Alex has big ideas for his brand but maintains a strong working relationship with the Czech Republic, where the vodka is produced. “They have been making vodkas and absinthe for a very long time.” He

says: “I wanted to make a vodka with a difference because there are lots of vodkas on the market that don’t taste of much. Our spirit is very unique because it contains wormwood, it is made from corn, and is distilled in a 500 year-old distillery.”

Ed adds that in their opinion crashing onto the market place with flashy advertisement campaign is not really their style. For them, the quality of their drink makes them stand out in a crowded market. “A lot of brands come in and make a lot of noise and spend a lot of money but we are growing organically. It takes a little bit of time to change people’s drinking habits, especially with a new white spirit but we’ve had such a great response already.”

It is this positive spirit, no pun intended, that has seen the brand go from strength to strength since its launch in the Australian market. Alex says, “When Absinthe was re-legalised, I was in conversation with one of the guys who helped to change the law in Australia. This is when I got the concept and idea, the test market was Australia and it went really well.

London is my home so I brought the brand back here and UK sales in the last few months have doubled.” The founder also divulges their global movement, a brand launch in Spain and France is already underway with America, Canada, Holland and Asia next on the list.

Babička has won several prestigious awards, most probably because of their attention to detail and quality. Its most recent accolade was a gold award at the 2011 Vodka Masters. Their sleek frosted bottles feature a white label with black writing, very similar to the way that the original witches would have presented their potions. The brand spins the perfect folkloric tale, and no doubt the original Babičkas would have kept Alex Clarke’s vodka all to themselves. t Babička vodka is available in Harvey Nichols and selected Wine Rack stores. At our midweek lunch, we feel private and hidden from the world.

Foodwise, the brunch/lunch menu is light and easy. We started with a tasty and warming parsnip and pear soup, which had a slice of sweet poached pear in the middle and sharp and spicy parsnip.

A crab omelette was large and fluffy, perfectly done and a meal in itself. The house Caesar salad came with outsize crunchy croutons and juicy anchovies, while a plate of perfectly sliced salmon sashimi came with curious tiny anchovy tempura mouthfulls flavoured with wasabi. An apple tart for pudding came with crème anglais, served lukewarm with delicious pastry.

For decadence and glamour, Beach Blanket Babylon remains on top of the world.

aving often stopped at Stuzzico in the morning for thick and silky espressos thinking it an upmarket village cafe, with excellent coffee, I didn’t know that come evening Stuzzico changes in to a stylish white linen-laid Italian restaurant where the clientele are all local and the food is delicious.

We went for dinner on a Friday evening and if the diners were not all regulars then they were certainly made to feel like they were. There was a warm welcome, a fabulous uncomplicated range of dishes combining simplicity with originality and a wine list all local to the different regions of Italy. Stuzzico is not large but the decor, white with a few carefully chosen pieces on the wall (many of them gifts from local artists and Stuzzico regulars Rob and Nick) creates a sense of space and calm. Our waiter was very keen to ensure we knew the menu before we made our choices and the fresh tomato and basil brushetta on thinly toasted bread presented as an appetiser was light and delicious.

I asked for wine to be matched to the courses and a Venetian Prosecco was the perfect accompaniment.

To start, beetroot, watercress and fried ricotta salad came beautifully presented with vivid colours and soft ricotta in a shell of fluffy breadcrumbs. Burrata di Bufala was delicious too, thick, creamy and rich with thinly sliced lightly grilled vegetables, very indulgent. The wine was a light and mellow organic red from the region of the owner in the south, Primonero.

For mains we struggled to choose between pasta and meat.

I ordered lamb and requested it pink and it was just right, accompanied by celeriac puree and green beans with a fantastic rich jus. Veal t-bone too was excellent, served with potatoes and completed with a side of spinach.

For pudding we shared a warm fruit tart with winter berries and a wonderful home made vanilla ice-cream where the flecks from the pod stood out and the creamy taste lingered.

Rounded off with excellent coffee, I am thrilled to have found a real Italian, a rarity. We will certainly be back to try the pasta.

t’s not every day you are invited to a restaurant to savour Alba white truffles at cost price, so we rushed at the chance of a table at the Dock Kitchen. I think Stevie Parle’s accountants must have been a little shocked at his generous offer of £3 a gramme (we are talking truffles here), as these culinary diamonds normally retail in restaurants at three times that. It was Mrs Skött’s birthday, so she was suitably spoilt with a bottle of superb Barolo.

Just a stagger down the road then to the newly refurbed Portobello House Hotel – this place has been crying out for someone to come and revive it and Carlo and Dimitri have done just that. We were shown to the romantic room – a very comfortable room with a four-poster, it was surprisingly quiet considering its location on Ladbroke Grove. The brothers have great plans to expand and the Percy Bistro (paying homage to its roots as the Earl Percy pub) is sure to become a popular haunt for us.

Another popular place is Bill Granger’s newly opened restaurant on Westbourne Grove, so popular in fact that we have not been able to get in yet as you can’t book. We have tried on a couple of occasions only to find queues stretching out on to the streets – the famed ricotta hotcakes will have to wait until another time. Still, we bumped into local chef Valentine Warner nearby (Mrs Skött came over all bashful when he told her how good she was looking) and he’s busy filming his new series and getting involved in a great campaign called ‘feed the 5000’ to stop food wastage – it’s all about loving the nobbly bits, we were told.

Still in builder chaos, but beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel. In an attempt to reclaim some of the house we tidied up a bit, though immediately the builders filled it with more stuff – do you think this is something they learn in their building apprenticeship?

The climax of the party season for us had to be the Lambton Place Christmas Party – an arctic extravaganza held jointly by estate agent extraordinaire Nick Crayson, Kell Skött Haircare and BeautyWorksWest. The mews was turned into a winter wonderland complete with real snow falling, penguins projected on to the walls and a life-sized polar bear ice sculpture dispensing Snow Queen Vodka shots – there were a lot of very sore heads in W11 the next morning. t mrandmrsskott@zest-media.com

New Year, New Yoga Helen Baron finds inspiration for a better way of living on north african shores

ou know you’re in trouble when the New Year clichés make you feel just as jaded and weary as the party season itself.

Emerging from the end of the year feeling toxic and tired, then trying to turn over a new leaf from the darkest depths of bitter January is a laudable thing indeed; it’s just that nowadays there are whole industries dedicated to balancing the burnout, and it can be dispiriting to find that the path to greater purity is flanked by an influx of false marketing promises.

The trick is to get away from it all entirely and find a new focus. And if you’re seeking a New Year destination 78

that will help to wash away the modern pollution and put a healthy spring back in your step, Lalla Abouch is the real deal.

Owned and run by Lucrezia Mutti, it’s an intimate guesthouse in Essaouira, Morocco, three hours’ drive from Marrakech. On arrival, the rustic charm box gets a big tick: simple and unassuming, the rooms are carved from the white stone walls and decked out in true agrarian style. On cooler nights in the winter months, cosy fires crackle in the lounge area and shower room. It’s an inviting sight.

More impressively still, Lalla Abouch lives in harmony with the

land, using traditional farming methods in its quest to grow its own organic produce. Lucrezia proves to be an excellent host, regaling her guests with a wealth of historical info about the local area as well as explaining the provenance of the ingredients that make it to her table. Most are home grown, all are local, and every meal is lovingly prepared on site by our chef for the week, Harold Schmidt. Which brings us to one of the guesthouse’s great revelations: Ayurvedic cooking.

The Ayurvedic philosophy posits that good digestion is at the core of general wellbeing, and as such every meal is designed to offer a perfect balance of flavours and natural nutrients in order to prevent cravings or digestive troubles later on.

During my stay, the fare eschewed extreme flavours and temperatures in favour of a more subtle and satisfying approach.

I’m proud to say that my bag of emergency chocolate was left intact in my luggage.

We were treated to a plethora of dips with homemade flatbreads and dishes such as lentil dahl, aubergines and adzuki beans, curried fennel, and zucchini and buckwheat. We enjoyed the fruits of the farm and local markets in the form of fresh salads, goat’s cheese and the most flavoursome herbal and mint teas. Lucrezia harvests oil from the nuts of the area’s indigenous argan trees (though she has a small herd of adventurous goats who try to beat her to it) and even presses her own olive oil using using a millstone and camels.

Harold explained the therapeutic and balancing effects of each meal, necessary for good digestion. His recipes were astoundingly delicious and satisfying; so full of energy-giving nutrients that I was able to cut out coffee and snack only on almonds

and fruit, without once experiencing a pang of hunger.

Lalla Abouch can cater for up to seven people on various programmes that can be tailored to suit the group, but I was there to try the new Yoga Retreat series set to coincide with the arrival of the full moon – and a hectic few weeks prior to my trip meant I couldn’t wait to limber up and de-stress in the hands of the experts.

The yoga sessions were led by Lisa Nicholas, who runs her own yoga school and therapy centre in Switzerland and has 25 years of experience.

Also a trained healing therapist and former professional skier, she practises a form of Hatha yoga that is at once restorative and enjoyably challenging.

Our morning sessions began with half an hour of meditation, then progressed to gentler poses, gradually worked up to stronger ones; in the afternoon, we reversed the procedure. Often with more dynamic forms of yoga, Lisa told us, the postures themselves are compromised, at least at beginner level. She focuses instead on more precise alignment. This ensures the postures work more deeply, improves the body awareness and

is a great way to build a foundation from which other forms of yoga can be explored.

The size of the group also allowed Lisa to adjust our positioning and explain the postures fully, as well as participate in the various breathing exercises properly.

Specialising in alternative healing methods and having worked previously as a relaxation teacher and naturopath, Christine’s massages were the icing on this already massively appealing cake. Christine specialises in her own kind of ‘intuitive massage’, focusing on the places where the body needs special treatment. I enjoyed a full body massage and further reflexology – and a major perk is that all massages are included in the package.

Lalla Abouch is everything you could want from a yoga retreat (particularly if you’re looking for one that is more focused on wellbeing and balance than the more ‘bootcamp’ styles available today). My stay left me re-energised and refreshed and especially grateful for having had a chance to meditate in such surroundings. I will remember our first sunset session fondly; our group sat on a rug, wrapped in blankets, the sounds of the nearby farm animals quietening beneath the darkening Moroccan sky.

How did you come to design baby clothes?

The idea for Baby Pinecone came by chance when Sas’s mother (a fashion designer in NZ) sent her eldest child a top, trousers and hat of her own design in chocolate merino wool.

The outfit looked so good and received so many compliments that we realised a business idea had been born.

What were you doing before?

Saskia is a prop stylist and Chloe worked in magazines. Chloe has recently returned to work while Saskia runs things day to day but we make all decisions together and hopefully one day when we grow bigger we will both be working on it full time.

Has it been harder than you thought?

It has been very challenging as everyone says about starting and

running a business (especially having small children too) but we have relished the challenge and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Why wool?

Merino wool has such exceptional qualities as it helps regulate body temperature and is fine so you can keep children at optimum temperatures during any season without being bulky therefore children feel very free and comfortable in the clothes and mums feel reassured their kids are warm.

How do you see the range developing - as your children get older, will you start doing bigger sizes?

Yes the business has very much grown alongside the children and we will probably look to having two brands, Baby Pinecone and Pinecone which will hopefully extend to bigger sizes (we currently go up to age six). We often worry that Baby Pinecone may be misleading to people shopping for young children rather than babies – so look out for our older sizes.

How long have you lived in Maida Vale and what do you like/dislike about it?

We have both lived in Maida Vale since 2004 we moved into next door flats within months of each other and became friends gradually, then once we both fell pregnant at the same time our friendship grew and then we had our first children Lotte and Dylan on the same day, so pretty much lived the first year of our children’s lives together.

How do you juggle work/life?

Often we hold meeting with the kids roaming around us. We do a lot of juggling and snatching moments of the day to deal with things and a lot of working in the evenings, Saskia in particular. www.babypinecone.com

hat a year 2011 has been for Douglas & Gordon.

Our web virals were a massive success – beyond my wildest dreams – still talked about today, suitably controversial and let’s be honest, quite funny. I can’t lie – for a time, I was concerned this might be my “Ratner” moment but luckily, the Great British public got the joke and left egg on the faces of those so called industry experts who were so critical at the time.

This year’s corporate campaign, “Extraordinary People”, was many months in planning and has been one of our most successful to date. Not sure entirely why December’s Barbie image went down so badly with some people – I thought it was genius but then you can’t please all the people all the time. We were voted the second best estate agent in the United Kingdom by our industry peers and most important of all, had a pretty successful year for our clients, selling and letting more property than ever before and remaining London’s largest independent agent. However, it is 1 December 2011 that I will remember most fondly - D&G Kids Co Day 2. After the success of our first Kids Co day last year, I was worried that maybe the company would not be as enthusiastic this time round and with the economic climate as it is, would the public be so generous? Silly me, of course they were. As last year, we closed all of our offices for the day so a big thank you to our understanding and tolerant clients and yet again, we hit the streets. Let me tell you, it is a VERY long day.

You have no idea the work that goes into collecting just one can of beans for a Kids Company Christmas hamper. It is quite possible to knock on 20 doors before you even find someone who is in and then you may come across au pairs, housekeepers or friends who are unable to donate without the owner’s permission. Then, just as you begin to despair as to how you are ever going to fill one hamper, let alone thousands, a kind soul will invite you into their kitchen and you will leave ten minutes later armed with carrier bags full of all sorts of goodies. By the end of the day, we had filled nearly 400 removal boxes (kindly donated by the removal firm Like Clockwork) with food weighing nearly eight tonnes. We also raised £8,300 in cash and were given over 1,300 brand new toys. The food alone was enough to fill 1,500 children’s hampers and I am incredibly proud of every single member of Douglas & Gordon for their hard work and hugely grateful to everyone who donated.
