EDITOR’S letter

ortobello Market is in the news again, this time thanks to the Westway Trust's unpopular new redevelopment plans. Over 16,000 local people (and counting) have signed a petition against proposals to build what seems to be a shopping centre on the site of the covered market. The aim of the scheme is to combat what the Trust claims to be 'anti-social behaviour' there outside market hours. The new building would, they say, 'provide an enhanced market environment' and 'improve the safety of the space', but opponents say the plans amount to yet another sanitised shopping experience that's more Westfield than authentic, and another nail in the coffin for Portobello's identity. The plans were on public display very briefly, and can now be seen online (westway.org). Planning is happening now, so it's worth taking a look. More cheerfully, this month almost marks the beginning of summer, and we are beginning to showcase a new

colour palate. We're also championing sunglasses and the Breton stripe, as well as talking to several designers in this issue, many of them evacuees from other lives. There's Zoe Jordan, the Formula One heiress-turned-designer, Laura Bailey, model-turned-designer and Emma Greenhill, PR-turned-designer. Between them, they reveal inspirations as diverse as Grand Prix, Italian cinema and Anna Piaggi. There's also the usual mix of local people and places, food, interiors and events, so enjoy the issue. u

Stella Gibbons’ masterpiece is a perfect pastiche of florid literature and self-conscious melodrama, which those who have read too much Thomas Hardy and D H Lawrence will be familiar with. Would-be writer Flora, bereft of family but firm of mind, arrives at the torrid Cold Comfort Farm and sets up correcting its self-obsessed, oversexed and untidy inhabitants. No target is spared, neither by Flora’s determination nor Gibbons’ sharp pen. If you have not read it, you really ought to, and if you have, you should probably read it again, because there just are not enough books that are this good. ◆

FASHION in the FAST LANE Designer Zoë Jordan on experiential fashion and why she booked herself into boarding school Wo r d s E d w i n a L a n g l e y

‘A

Formula One team and a fashion brand are not dissimilar,’ says Zoë Jordan, founder of fashion label ‘Zoe Jordan’, and daughter of former F1 team boss, Eddie. I look at her dubiously but unperturbed, she continues. ‘In terms of the moving parts. A fashion show and a grand prix are kind of the same thing. There’s a sh*t load of work that goes on behind the scenes… everything is quite unglamorous and business-like. And then you send out these beautiful cars… [or] these beautiful models. There are similarities.’ We are sitting in Zoë’s showroom in Rossetti Studios in Chelsea. It’s an open space, a minimalist space – very white, very light, very bright. A collection of clothes hang neatly on racks, overlooked by a sofa on which we are lounging. Chillout music plays softly in the background and I find it all very relaxing and cool – rather like Zoë herself. It’s hard to imagine

her as a child, growing up amidst cars, mechanics and oil grease. But a few minutes in and it’s clear that Zoë Jordan could fit in anywhere. ‘I was the eldest of four and my dad was away all the time,’ she says of her childhood in Oxford. ‘I went to Oxford High… and I struggled with the ‘all girls’ thing… So I went into Blackwells [booksellers], sat down with the Good Schools Guide, and started [phoning up] for interviews… I booked in for an exam at Malborough, then told my mum that I had an exam to go to, and would she drive me? That was it.’ Off Zoë went to boarding school – a haven for sports, she discovered. ‘My coach was the England Hockey Coach,’ she notes. ‘I’m glad I did [it]. My parents, who came from Dublin, [thought you only boarded] if you were really badly behaved. It was like a borstal – you didn’t go to boarding school if you didn’t have to. I was trying to educate them. I did, but…’ she pauses for a moment. ‘You’re exposed to too much, way too quickly. I grew up way too quickly.’ Following Malborough, Zoë headed

FASHION / PROFILE to Newcastle to study – of all things – architecture. ‘I wish I’d gone to an American university now,’ she says. ‘[Newcastle] was just an extra four years of school. Learnt f*ck all. But I played hockey a lot.’ Incidentally, she also met her husband there, Steve Aspinall, who works in Private Equity and with whom she has two daughters, Eden (2) and Dylan (1). Following graduation, Zoë spurned a career in architecture and went into finance. She worked as a successful bond trader in New York where, ironically, she cultivated the vision for her fashion brand. ‘[I wanted to be] taken seriously in a work environment, with enough edge or enough style to [take my outfit] through to night... There was no way I would have gone from work to seeing my friends. Because I didn’t feel that comfortable in my suits... A lot of [my ideas] come from that.’ Like her father before her, who left banking to pursue professional go-karting (much to his parents’ chagrin), in 2007, Zoë quit the city (much to her parents’

A FASHION show and a GRAND PRIX ARE KIND of the same THING chagrin) and set up the fashion label ‘Irwin & Jordan’, with her friend Georgie Irwin. ‘It was about creating the perfect white shirt, the perfect jeans, the perfect tailcoat… We taught ourselves as we went along – [Georgie] didn’t have training either…. She left fairly early on but I kept the name at that stage because we’d done quite a lot of branding.’ Zoë carried on solo and her hard work paid off when she was awarded the BFC Elle Magazine’s Talent Launch Pad Award in 2010. Bolstered by critical acclaim, in 2011, she changed the brand name to ‘Zoe Jordan’, and the following year, was a finalist for Walpole’s Emerging British

Luxury Brand Award and shortlisted for the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. Her collections were shown on the catwalk initially, but she quickly discovered presentations worked better. ‘What I do is more of a ‘daywear’ vibe… [And presentation] is more impactful… I’ve moved [my presentations] to New York [because] I feel that in order to have a really successful line you need to have a solid presence in the States.’ Zoë walks round the showroom and picks out various pieces to highlight. Stylish and androgynous, each epitomises the ‘boyish elegance’ for which she is known. She pays particular attention

to a jacket from the AW13/14 ‘Chicane’ Collection – inspired by racing – and later credits the ‘get-up-and-go’ mentality of Hong Kong (where she lived briefly as a newlywed) for bolstering entrepreneurial enthusiasm. Her designs are clearly influenced by her past experiences, and indeed, one gets the sense she wishes she had worn them whilst experiencing them. When she tells me her brand is more about functionality than an outlet for creativity, I see exactly what she means. ‘I come at [fashion] as a consumer. I’m a shopper,’ she grins. ‘I know what I’m looking for… There’s a gap there and you want to fill that.’

in west London. Having lived on All Saints Road in her 20s, Zoë has returned to the area, and currently rents near Golborne Road. ‘Without being cheesy, I think Notting Hill does feel like home,’ she says. ‘Portobello’s got that Friday feeling… Sometimes I try to take Friday off to do the market, [to] see what’s going on... I’m not sure I’m a Notting Hill ‘aficionado’, I’m clinging onto it.’

She’s a business founder, a designer, a mother and a wife, but there’s no resting on laurels here. ‘I think there are two forms of ‘making it’,’ she instructs. ‘There’s the one side, which is critical acclaim… which we’ve done quite well in... But without a solid business, which can show really solid profits…’ she tails off. ‘I feel that’s something to strive for.’ If Zoë Jordan is the woman I think she is, I have no doubt she will find that stability. STRIPES

As a new book celebrates the perennial appeal of the nautical look, Absolutely looks at the Breton sweater’s roots Wo r d s A m b e r J a n e B u t c h a r t

striped garments became available to a wider section of society and became a popular choice for sportswear. For mariners, they had the added advantage of visibility should a man fall overboard. The association between stripes and the sea was strengthened with the adoption of the striped undershirt into French naval uniform in 1858. The first description of the knitted cotton jersey ‘mariniere’ (officially called the ‘tricot raye’) was meticulous in its definition, listing 21 white stripes at 20 millimetres width and 20 or 21 blue stripes at 10 millimetres for the body, with 15 white stripes and 14 or 15 blue stripes on the sleeves. The 21 stripes were said to represent Napoleon’s naval victories but, again, this is uniform myth. The striped undershirt, featuring a wide ‘boat’ neckline for ease of removal, was later incorporated into the Tsarist Russian Navy as the telnyashka, where it spread to other branches of the military during the Soviet era. With the official adoption of the fisherman’s striped top into French uniform it became indelibly linked with Gallic elegance, and by the late 19th century, stripes were a popular option for swimwear and promenade outfits.

tripes have a long association with the sea. From 17th century Dutch whalers to early 18th century mariners, artefacts showing the stripy side of seafaring life can be found in musuems across Europe. British and Italian fishermen are shown in striped tops in engravings, mezzotints and watercolours from the first half of the 19th century. Knitted striped hose had been in and out of favour since the 17th century, as breeches put men’s legs on show, but this only extended to the upper reaches of society who could afford to keep abreast of fashion. Lord Nelson was wearing non-regulation blue and white striped stockings when he was wounded at Tenerife in 1797. For fishermen, knitted undergarments were vital to conserve heat at sea. In 1816, a circular knitting machine, the tricoteur, was developed by a Frenchborn British engineer, Marc Brunel (father of engineer Isambard Kingdon), which made knitting seamless striped stockingette (jersey) a more viable option. As technology improved, knitted

We may not consider woollen knits as a waterproof option today but, before technical clothing and rubberizing, tightly-knit sweaters with their natural oils were one of the best options for protection against the elements. Knitting has played an important role in fishing communities. Junya In France, Brittany Watanabe and neighbouring SS11 Normandy have long histories of knitting and of woollens. Rouen and Nantes were some of the earliest centres of framework knitting in 17thcentury France. Used predominantly for hosiery such as silk and woollen stockings, it sat alongside handknit cottage industries in the region. Nautical wear Dolce and Gabanna is closely associated with © Andrea Simms Brittany. Brest has been a crucial port since the 17th century, drawing mariners from the surrounding area. A number of businesses, the majority with ties to the area’s historic textile trades, continue the tradition of supplying both fishermen’s knits and the naval marinière. Saint James was founded in Normandy in 1850 as a wool spinning and dyeing plant. A century later, they began to manufacture their own navy blue ‘real Breton fisherman’s sweater’, with the distinctive side buttons at the

shoulder, and they supply knitwear to the French army and navy from their factory, still located in Saint James. They branched out into other colours, and the ubiquitous stripes, and also produce jersey striped tops. The marketing for their 2012 capsule collection with Barneys New York featured the ultimate signifier of French identity: an Eiffel Tower sculpture adorned in blue and white stripes. Petit Bateau, known for its striped children’s and adult wear, started as a hosiery factory in the textile centre of Troyes in 1893, specializing in underwear for children. They have subsequently

developed into a nautical-themed lifestyle brand. Meanwhile, Armor-Lux, originating in Quimper in 1938, produces both the fisherman’s sweater and striped marinières. A year later, in 1939, Orcival was founded in Paris. Previous outfitters to the French Navy, they expanded beyond their traditional markets of fishermen and sailors in the 1970s and continue manufacturing their marinières in France today. ◆

is Raoul Dufy’s wall-hanging titled ‘Poiret’s Models at the Races’ 1925. I love this image and can stare and stare at it and see something new every time. Dufy really captures the feel of being the races, look at the expressions on the ladies faces, the horses as well as their wonderful Paul Poiret dresses.

EVE HERBERT: How did the collaboration come about? LAURA BAILEY: Following on from their sell-out collaboration with Caroline Issa, LKB approached me with a view to creating a capsule collection for spring/summer 2015, an irresistible opportunity to dream up my perfect summer shoes, whilst leaning on LK Bennett's technical and marketing expertise. I love working creatively with a team, from the initial moodboards to the first samples, shoots to sales. My vision was for a collection that is simultaneously nostalgic and modern.

EH: Where did you look for inspiration when designing the collection? LB: The Amalfi Coast and to Italian cinema. 60s geometric print swimsuits and Riviera romance. Iconic actresses especially Monica Vitti, Sophia Loren, and Anna Magnani. I drew mostly on the 60s and early 70s, timeless understated glamour with a modern edge.

I'm attracted to the clash of print and solids, brights and neutrals, matt and shine. I wanted the designs to be as chic and brave as the iconic actresses and landscapes I was inspired by. EH: When did you first visit the Amalfi coast? LB: In my 20s for shoots and road (Vespa!) trips, and more recently, for family holidays and stolen weekends. EH: Why do you think the stars of Italian cinema in the 60s continue to inspire so many? LB: Enduring iconic style, on and off-

screen. Plus intelligence and mystery, and of course, the promise of la dolce vita. EH: What is your favourite film from the era? LB: Antonioni's L'Eclisse and La Notte. EH: How would you describe your style? LB: English eclectic / tomboy princess. Also inspired by my travels abroad, and my love of London and everyday adventures. But all pretty unconsciously - I'm not big on planning / styling. I’m more spontaneous and in the moment, depending on my mood and circumstance. And ideally, style defies labels and simply reflects the personality / the moment. EH: What are your fashion essentials? LB: Chanel shades, FRAME denim, Nike hi-tops, Burberry trench, and an Emilia Wickstead dress in palest blue or scarlet.

I change my mind all the time but today my favourite of the collection is the navy and red Claudia - a high chunky heel and a flattering ankle cross-strap. EH: Who or what inspires you? LB: London. My travels. My girlfriends which provide an ever-evolving scrapbook of ideas and all kinds of inspiration. Fashion and other stories. EH: What are your top tips for red carpet glamour? LB: Depends. he word Botox might fill some of us with fear, even those of us who probably could do with a bit of help. I certainly balk at the thought of injecting anything into my facial muscles, and at the prospect of the dreaded frozen face look. But still, that's not to say that I couldn't benefit from a bit of smoothing in the skin department. So the intriguingly named 'non-invasive Botox facial' sounds promising, given that there is no actual Botox involved and of course nothing as invasive as a needle. Just opened downstairs at Notting Hill Gate's long-standing Bladerunners salon is Mandalula Spa, which may appear a touch underwhelming for those used to the super-luxe experience, but what it lacks in frills it certainly makes up for in quality. Meder beauty is a high-tech system that uses language like: "the newest generation of muscle relaxing peptides work in synergy to block neuro-muscular transmission and smooth out wrinkles around the eyes and forehead without breaking the functionality of the muscle" and if this sounds baffling, the results aren't. My therapist didn't bombard me with infomation as to every stage of this several-step treatment, but I emerged looking significantly smoother in the forehead, my skin glowing and fresh. For lasting results, a short course of treaments has an impressive effect. u

DR KHAN: My wife was working in medically-based skincare and had a room in Harley Street where she saw celebrity and media clients. She suggested I start working with her one day a week to supply the demand for botox and dermal fillers. Within six months we had a full time clinic and have gone from strength to strength. AM: What is the philosophy of the clinic? DK: A light touch is our philosophy. We want you to look your best. We offer everything from a facial to a full facelift, give honest advice and never let you overdo it. AM: How do you differentiate between cases when considering surgical or nonsurgical procedures? DK: There are lots of factors to consider, including your lifestyle, health and what you want to achieve. For instance, if you have a young child to look after, full on laser resurfacing that makes you look scary for

a week is unacceptable. We spend time during your consultation talking about your expectations and how we can achieve them. AM: Are there different benefits to both? There are always ways of improving the skin’s tone, texture and quality, and that can be as valuable as full on surgery. Ultimately, it’s the assessment that’s vital to a happy ending. AM: What is the longest surgery you’ve ever performed? DK: Fat removal and body sculpting can take up to four hours or more. AM: If someone is determined to get a procedure, but in your opinion it’s not necessary, how do you deal with it? DK: We don’t do it and explain why. Unfortunately, someone somewhere may perform the procedure.

AM: In you opinion, what public figure has used surgery well? And, what about a celebrity who has taken things to far…? DK: There are many examples of good and bad surgery: Sharon Osborne for instance has openly admitted to having surgery and looked amazing, though she may have gone a little far now. People who have had great surgery often do not admit to it. Gillian Taylforth is an example of good and appropriate procedures – she has returned to EastEnders looking younger than the son she is supposed to have given birth to 45 years ago. Take this scenario, which is something I've witnessed many times over the years. A person is well aware that to get the body they want they need to up their weekly training programme, yet they cannot commit because life gets in the way. Suddenly they have a big event coming up such as a birthday or a wedding, and despite life getting busier in the lead up to said event, they somehow manage to make time to work out frequently in the gym. How? It's simple. They prioritise their workouts to achieve their goals. Now, of course, sacrifices may have to be made. Making sure to get out of work on time, earlier nights, health-conscious eating and cutting down on alcohol. Even waking up earlier for a pre-work gym session. My job is to motivate and guide people, but sometimes, as is the case for all in my profession, people slip through the net and don't achieve the results they want. This can be for many reasons: a lack of self-confidence or self-motivation, no time or even just not knowing how to go about making a change. That said, sometimes, even those eager to make a change don't

get to where they want to be. Most people do realise the importance of exercise to achieve their goals, but life can get in the way. Whatever the commitment or excuse for finding the time to exercise and eat well, there are ways to turn this around, and that's through prioritisation and having realistic expectations. Even personal trainers can fluctuate with their own personal progression unless we keep ourselves driven and working towards specific targets. Prioritisation, in the end, is the bridge between motivation and success.

01 Make the marinade by combining the buttermilk with the spices and maple syrup in a glass or ceramic bowl. Season with salt and pepper, then add the chicken and mix well. Cover and leave in the fridge to marinate for 1 hour or as long as your patience allows. 02 To make the onion and radish salsa, combine all the ingredients and set aside in the fridge for 15–20 minutes. 03 For the paprika mayo, combine all the ingredients in a bowl and season to taste. 04 When you’re ready to cook the chicken, combine the flour with the cayenne and lemon zest in a shallow bowl, then season generously with salt and pepper.

Working in small batches, remove the chicken from the marinade, trying to keep as much marinade clinging to the meat as possible, then put it straight into the flour mixture, coating it well on all sides. Carefully add to the hot oil and deep-fry for 3–4 minutes until golden brown. Remove the chicken from the oil and drain on paper towel.

SHAKSHUKA STYLE

To assemble the tacos, place the shredded red cabbage in the middle of a tortilla, followed by the paprika mayo and the crispy fried buttermilk chicken. Top with the pickled onion and radish salsa, before garnishing with coriander and chilli. 07

love this dish. It’s simple and hard to get wrong, which means it’s perfect as a brunch, lunch or dinner dish. The spices, combined with runny-yolked eggs, feta and fresh herbs work a treat. This is also great as a sharing dish, so don’t save it just for lazy Tuesdays.

INGREDIENTS • glug of olive oil • 1 red onion, roughly choppe • 3 cloves garlic, crushed and roughly chopped • 1 red chilli, thinly sliced • small handful of oregano leaves, thinly sliced • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika • 2 teaspoons ground cumin • 2 x 400 g (14 oz) tins of cherry tomatoes • 4–6 free-range eggs –one per person • 150 g (5½ oz) feta, crumbled • handful of roughly chopped coriander (cilantro) • handful of roughly chopped parsley For the Garlic croutons: • 1 fresh crusty loaf • glug of olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, cut in half lengthways • small handful of roughly chopped parsley METHOD

01 Start by pouring a glug of oil into a skillet or frying pan over medium heat, then add the onion, garlic, chilli, oregano, paprika and cumin. Season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, for a few minutes until the onion softens, then add the tinned cherry tomatoes. Once the sauce starts to bubble, lower the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes to let the flavours deepen. 02 Crack in the eggs, spacing them out evenly. Turn the heat up to high, cover the pan with a lid or foil and cook for 3–4 minutes or until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still runny. 03 While the shakshuka cooks, chop or tear your loaf into roughly 2.5–5 cm (1–2 in) hunks. Heat a frying pan over medium–high heat and add a glug of oil, followed by the bread. Fry the croutons until golden brown all over, shaking the pan every now and then. When you’re happy with the level of crunch, drain the croutons on paper towel, then rub all over with the cut side of the garlic cloves and sprinkle with parsley. 04 Serve the shakshuka topped with a generous sprinkle of feta, coriander and parsley and a grinding of black pepper. Scatter over the garlic croutons, then place in the middle of the table and let people help themselves.

This summer Santo is preparing for La Santa Mexican Seafood and The Mezcaleria on Portobello Road. Delicate seafood ceviches and punchy reinvention 'La Puta Sopa' will be served downstairs. Upstairs you will find that Santo has partnered with Alipús to bring you the best mezcales Mexico has to offer. veryone loves it when a local business with character, passion and style takes the next step towards becoming a resident institution. Santo is seven years old now, so Happy Birthday to Fernando and Carlos De la Cruz and the rest of the Santo team. Eating game on Golborne Road's stylish newcomer Wo r d s e l i z a b e t h h u t t o n

pened last October, John Doe is named, quite morbidly, after the American legal term for an unidentified male body. And there's a fitting anonymity about the place too as it feels like the sort of spot that only the locals know about, an in-the-know secret. Visiting on a Saturday, the atmosphere at John Doe is, rather ironically, alive. The kitchen’s long marble-topped wooden bar is full of hungry punters looking on eagerly as their orders are cooked by Bertha, the restaurant’s much-loved

charcoal and wood burner. Adding the wow factor, a number of charismatic chefs glide around the kitchen showcasing their skills using fire and smoke. With a menu that revolves around British game, predominantly venison – another reason why the name ‘doe’ fits the bill – the restaurant also prides itself on an array of seasonal seafood and vegetable-based dishes. What’s more, the selection of British craft beer available is truly exceptional. After debating between a couple, we choose a bottle of Cool as a Cucumber by the Wild Beer Co, and order grilled Cornish

octopus with chickpeas and aioli. The clever combination of garlic and nutty chickpea works to complement the smokey depth of the octopus without overpowering the delicate flavour. Equally well-balanced is ash-roasted leek with caper, lentil and tarragon dressing, which relies on salty capers to counteract the sweet and soft slow cooked leeks. Both dishes are impressively good. For my main, I order venison haunch steak accompanied by bone marrow, watercress and capers. Smothering the buttery marrow on top of the steak, I realise that while this was the carnivore’s dream, it is a little too indulgent for me. But then marrow really isn’t for everyone. Meanwhile, my companion’s lemon brined creedy caver chicken is cooked to perfection, succulent and delicious. Sides are purple sprouting broccoli coated in anchovies, chilli and garlic as well as some of the

crispiest, fluffiest duck fat roasties we’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. While my partner chooses to finish things up with the British cheese platter, quince and biscuits, I go for a great big slab of valrhona chocolate terrine with sweet pistachio cream. Seriously decedent, this is a rich end to an epic meal. All washed down with a spirited apple and Pomana brandy cocktail, John Doe kills us kindly. Very well done. ◆

English Heritage’s archive on Tom Kay’s house in W8 reveals much about this local Modernist icon Wo r d s E v e H e r b e r t

his extraordinary Modernist house in Kensington Place was built in 1967 by noted architect Tom Kay. Known for its distinctive cylindrical stair turret and Staffordshire Blue brick, it is Grade II listed by English Heritage in recognition of its architectural significance, described as 'tough yet elegant, slightly reminiscent of Dutch Expressionism and wholly of its time'. ENGLISH HERITAGE The house was designed by the architect Tom Kay (1935-2007) for the photographer Christopher Bailey and his wife, the opera singer Angela Hickey. The brief included provision for a singing practice studio. It replaced a derelict house of c1840, which Kay was initially invited by Christopher Bailey to remodel in 1964. A review in The Times (21 September 1967) described it as ‘bold and assertive, straightforward and unadorned, a genuine product of its age, as its neighbours are of theirs.’

[The clients] wanted the largest house that could be built on the narrow corner site, 14 feet by 60 feet, at the end of a terrace of early Victorian stuccoed cottages. The house had to respect building lines. The architect responded to the challenge with a brilliant feat of compression. Circulation, except for a tiny entrance hall, is concentrated into a projecting stair turret (treated, like the garage, as a bay in order to obtain planning permission). The lower-ground floor is naturally lit from a sunken area and a tiny back garden. A terrace extends out of the living room and above the

garage, and the stairs lead up to the flat roof. The most impressive achievement is the living room, double-height at the front, with a gallery-study (that doubles as an occasional bedroom) slung across one end beneath a pent glass roof. Not only does this arrangement create a most exciting series of spaces, but the volume is large enough to provide good acoustics for singing practice and recording. Construction is of load-bearing brick, with blue Staffordshire facings. In order to preserve privacy, few windows are visible from the street, and these are double-glazed. The circular turret and rough-textured bricks give the house a powerful, compressed character, and the stepped section at the back echoes the adjoining cottages.

Christopher Bailey, one of Londonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading commercial photographers, and his opera-singer wife, Angela Hickey, had definite ideas about the number of rooms they wanted and so on, and commissioned Tom Kay, ARIBA, to produce plans for converting and extending the existing house to make a modern labour-saving home. When the architect drew up the plans it became obvious that the alterations would have to be extensive and the quantity surveyorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s report showed that they would be costly to effect-something like two-thirds, in fact, of the cost of a new building. The Baileys thereupon made the courageous decision not only to build, but to build the absolutely bang-up-to-the-minute kind of house they had hitherto merely talked about as a possibility a decade or so hence. In any commission of this kind, it is essential that the client should give the architect a good brief, one that is as detailed as possible, at the same time allowing the designer maximum freedom for his skills and imagination. In this way, the Baileys were ideal clients throughout the entire operation. Even the briefs for furniture and fittings were detailed enough for the architect to work from.

HOMES & INTERIORS / ARCHITECTURE nearly 30 feet long and 13 feet wide, occupying the whole plan area, with two pleasantly varied ceiling levels which were necessary in order to accommodate the most novel-and logical-element in this room: a gallery which cuts across the room and adds enormously to the visual excitement of the room. Opening out of this room is a roof terrace of ample size, an unusual amenity in London, and a suntrap throughout pleasant afternoons. The local authority at first demanded stucco facing or London stock bricks rubbed with ‘soot’ for this house. The present dull, rugged, dramatic surface is a rebuke to all such suggestions for evasions of honesty in purpose. Blue-black brick paviors and quarry tiles laid on concrete have been used for floors, and this has given the house an unusual unity, seen at its most exciting in the livingTom Kay’s first scheme included a spiral staircase inside the house, but, in view of the many differing activities of the family, this would have proved a space-waster of substantial proportions, so he decided to build the spiral outside the building. The idea alone was odd enough in a context of small up-and-down Victorian terrace houses, but they did have a corner site and they could start from scratch. The evolution of the idea was stranger still, for the architect set about evolving a plan based on a staircase within a well of six-feet diameter. Yet, even so, in order to push the staircase out to give the Baileys adequate room, official permission had to be sought and obtained. This not only added to the net available floor area but, more importantly, increased the flexibility of the internal planning on the narrow site. All in all, the staircase, concentrated in the tower, offered the only practical plan which would not occupy too much space outside the building line and would start

and end logically and correctly, at landings. The architect had to work out in detail a plan that would satisfy the domestic requirements of husband and wife with their divergent careers and recreations. The major requirement was a large living-room, and this the Baileys have undoubtedly got: a large room of unusual shape approaching

room and in the kitchen where the white Formica doors of the Hygena fitments form a gleaming contrast with the tiles. The architect has incorporated a number of unusual practical devices throughout the house, any one of which would merit the attention of firms marketing well-designed fitments. Advice for students and parents on picking the best kind of holiday tuition before exam season starts he epithet of last month’s column focusing on the T need for balance in the build up to stressful public exams, should not be lost in their aftermath. Post exam leave and the long summer break should absolutely provide respite from arduous hours in the library. Of course steam must be let off and of course heady summer nights will be at the forefront of most teenagers’ priorities. And rightly so – they have worked incredibly hard (we hope) and should be rewarded for their efforts. I still vividly remember the post-GCSE holiday that my friends and I were let loose on… it was almost considered a rite of passage. Eleven weeks, give or take, is a considerable chunk of free time. Having spent so much time focusing on academics, it should be used as valuable period to align interests and skills. Encourage your child to balance their socialising with time to be productive and achieving – whether undertaking work experience, attending a sports camp, visiting a language school or perhaps becoming involved in local voluntary work. By broadening their horizons in this way, teenagers will not only learn the hugely valuable skill of balancing work and play, but with their achievements their confidence will flourish and they will relish the parties even more. u

A new movement that says a real education can’t be rushed is gaining ground W o r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

emember the slow food movement? A reaction against mass-produced, air-freighted food led to a minor revolution. Well, now we have slow education. One of its promoters is Mike Grenier, an English teacher and housemaster at Eton who cofounded the movement. Grenier says: “It struck me that the model of processing people through exams with narrow ideas about teaching, was mimicking the worst aspects of a McDonald’s production line.” He became interested in creating a model for education that makes time for creative teaching and learning. It is less about teaching to the test and more about allowing children to think independently. It advocates long-term projects to allow children to experiment – and sometimes to fail as they learn. Matthew Moss High School, a mixed comprehensive in Rochdale, signed up to the movement 18 months ago and so far, it’s a great success. Three lessons a week have been freed up in years 7

and 8 to give students time to develop projects they are really interested in. At the end, a viva examination explores their knowledge and understanding. The school has also developed a scheme whereby younger students volunteer to attend classes given by sixth-form pupils. The topics they teach aren’t connected to the exam syllabus; they are just of personal interest to the student teacher. Some critics query whether such ‘project-based learning’ is a return to the bad old days of the 1970s when children were left with gaping holes in their factual knowledge. But Grenier robustly refutes this, saying that slow education is avowedly not anti-academic. “We’re not progressive,” says Grenier. “The academic is fundamental. We also believe in teaching people how to do stuff. It is about producing self-reliant children and adults. In fact, it could be seen as highly academic, since it values learning for its own sake rather than for where it could lead.” u sloweducation.co.uk

HIGH The Alps may peak in popularity over winter but, during the summer months, the hills are alive with beauty and activity. Wo r d s G e M M a B i l l i n g t o n

hy would you go to Gstaad in summer? I had been posed this question before setting off on my brief, mid-July sojourn to the idyllic Alpine village, and during the train journey from Berne airport through the picturesque Swiss landscape, I had time to ponder it. True, it was a few degrees cooler here than the London I’d left behind (typical) and the chalets did seem to have something amiss without their snow-covered roofs and icicles, but Gstaad outside of ski season is certainly not without its charms. For one thing, Switzerland is visually stunning in summer. The alpine peaks are still dusted in snow but the land flourishes with spring flowers. Everything is a lush shade of green, and great plumes of cloud seem to tumble down the mountains. The two-hour train journey simply flew by, with the glorious views providing ample distraction.

Gstaad’s motto is: ‘Come up, slow down’ alluding to its leisurely pace and high altitude. Actress Julie Andrews, who owns a holiday home in the area, describes it as the “last paradise in a crazy world.” Along with Andrews, a plethora of famous dignitaries have chosen Gstaad as their holiday getaway, and looming over the centre of town is the retreat of choice for the world’s elite: the famous Gstaad Palace hotel. Chugging into the quaint train station, a chauffeur in immaculate Gstaad Palace uniform doffs his peaked cap and imperceptibly takes my cases from me. A lift to the hotel is welcome but somewhat superfluous; the Palace is mere minutes away and is visible from practically every angle with its castle-like structure and extravagant towers. The Palace may look imposing on the outside, but once inside it’s as cosy and intimate as any alpine chalet. The interior decor is a tasteful Swiss palette of subtle check, muted colours and traditional wooden

A small balcony jutting off my spacious bedroom provides views across the village and a personal sanctuary in which to sit back, take in the sublime surroundings, and relax. Gstaad Palace opened in December 1913 and, following a hugely successful inaugural skiing season, the building was extended the following year. The hotel has survived two World Wars and ensuing economic turmoil, and has been managed by the Scherz family for nearly 80 years. After the Second World War, international music stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Édith Piaf and Louis Armstrong held exclusive concerts at the Palace, and the hotel has attracted Hollywood stars and royalty throughout its history, welcoming everyone from Paul McCartney to Princess Diana. Rumour has it that Michael Jackson, friend of Palace regular Liz Taylor (whose husband-at-the-time Richard Burton said they “only felt home in Gstaad”), enquired about purchasing the Palace, simply because he “liked the castle.” The hotel is still synonymous with celebrity clientele and there’s a distinct air of

glamour to it, particularly inside the retro Greengo night club, which opened in the 1970s. But the Palace embodies a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, and it’s this plus an unrivalled personal service that keeps guests – celebrity or otherwise – coming back year after year. But what is Gstaad’s appeal outside of skiing season? Well, for starters, summer may be the one time you’re physically able to stay in the Palace – its winter season sells out months in advance. However, another attraction is that, unlike other alpine resorts, Gstaad is very much open over summer, and there’s a host of cultural and sporting activity. Most famous is the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open tennis tournament, which

Another must-do is a visit to the Palace-owned Walig Hut, a traditional Swiss cabin 1,700 metres above the village of Gsteig, originally built in 1786. With little but the dulcet chimes of cowbells for company, Walig Hut makes a whimsical lunchtime or dinner excursion (traditional Swiss fondue is cooked by a private chef, followed by a shot of fiery Kirsch) or even a romantic overnight stay. Condé Nast Traveller awarded it Best Wilderness Hotel in 2013, and it’s easy to see why. One of my last excursions organised by the Palace was a horse drawn carriage ride around Gstaad. Our guide (born and bred in Gstaad) was infectiously enthusiastic, not to mention thoroughly knowledgeable. As the afternoon began to give way to evening, we trotted through the pristine town centre, where cars are forbidden and the Chanel and Louis Vuitton boutiques are ensconced in pretty, traditional chalet designs. Outside of the centre, at the grassy feet of the mountains, our guide told stories of growing up in Gstaad and pointed out her childhood home. In a moment of utter tranquillity, I deemed Gstaad to be the most romantic, idyllic and serene place on earth. So, why would you visit it in summer? e eschew the more formal Conservatory restaurant for the Gumstool Inn, a country pub that’s accessible through the main hotel. Seasonal local produce and hearty county fare are order of the day, alongside an extensive kids’ menu and roaring fire/ pretty courtyard tables. Breakfast in the Conservatory is extensive (there’s even a separate children’s breakfast menu, consisting mostly of pancakes).

e are in Tetbury, the deluxe family suite, which is really a dinky terraced cottage with its own front gate and little garden path. On the ground floor, a sitting room and vast bedroom with a four-poster bed; upstairs a spacious bathroom and children’s room with two beds. Fabulous details include dreamy window seats, a selection of toys and games, all the usual technology (large televisions, ipod dock, nespresso machine) and an array of Aromatherapy Associates products (albeit with slightly bossy notes instructing us not to take them home). The staircase comes equipped with stairgates, ideal for those with toddlers (and tolerable for those without).

he pool is mostly adults-only, aside from a couple of critical windows during the day when children dominate. There’s a stylish outdoor hot tub and an assortment of steam rooms. My relaxing facial, again with Aromatherapy Associates, leaves me rose-scented and peachy-cheeked.

TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY If you’re feeling energetic there’s a perfectly preserved 1930s, 50m outdoor lido and, of course, the entire Cotswolds for walking, horse riding, shooting even waterskiing. The town grew in fame and fortune following the visit of George III and the Queen in 1788 “to take the waters” and its Regency architecture, complete with garden squares straight out of Mary Poppins, survives intact. Where to stay in the “Jewel of the Cotswolds”? There is only one answer - Montpellier House. Cheltenham’s most fashionable, expensive and idiosyncratic neighbourhood. Montpellier is unashamedly genteel - a provincial Kensington that retains dozens of thriving local, independently owned shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Overlooking Montpellier Gardens, the Montpellier Town House is the joint project of retired Notting Hill estate agent, Andrew Chard and Andrew Seccombe of Blighty Antiques. Formerly a run down hotel, the property has been meticulously restored into a luxurious holiday let sleeping 9. As soon as one steps inside the front door, they are provided with a truly memorable experience, it’s a treasure trove of quirky antiques and contemporary collectibles - all of which are for sale. MODERNISM The uncompromising style that’s still controversial Wo r d s NIGEL LEWIS

odernism has a relatively short history in the UK but it’s been a contentious one. Disliked by a public who have struggled to embrace its tenets and reviled by Prince Charles, the style has remained a niche interest for most homebuilders and buyers. Consequently, Modernist homes are hard to spot in London. This would sadden Modernism’s original and founding architects. Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Erno Goldfinger and Frank Lloyd Wright all tried to introduce a new way of thinking about architecture and, although they created very different designs, embraced a common set of ideas. These included that form that should follow a building’s function; simplicity; honesty about the material used (i.e. no cladding); walls at 90-degree angles and the use of materials originally destined for industrial, rather than architectural, purposes – such as plate glass. What few realise is that Modernism or ‘the Modern movement’ is really a US import via Germany. Architects such as Mies van der Rohe, who honed their skills in Germany’s Bauhaus school between the wars, fled fascism and emigrated to the US. Then, along with US home grown

THE MODERNISTS TRIED TO CREATE A NEW WAY OF THINKING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE talent such as Frank Lloyd Wright, they began designing the white, angular properties we have come to know. But it took another 15 or more years for the style to land in the UK. So where did Modernism spring from? Its roots came both from a desire to find a ‘new architecture’ after the two world wars, the availability of both new materials and building techniques and also from the heavy influence of Art Deco. Modernism went on to have a huge impact on our perception of what a house can be used for including open plan living. But planners are still suspicious of Modernism and in many of London’s conservation areas it’s impossible to get the green light to build a house in this style. Attitudes are changing, albeit glacially, and the occasional highviz project gets the go ahead, a good example being the Shadow House on St Paul’s Crescent behind Kings Cross, built in 2011. More famous but older Modernist houses include Erno

Goldfinger’s home at No.2 Willow Road in Hampstead. But perhaps the best known in London is the Grade I listed Isokon Building on Lawn Road, also in Hampstead, built and designed for furniture designer Jack Pritchard during the 1930s. While the Isokon is the most admired, Erno Goldfinger was the best known architect in the UK, partly because Bond creator Ian Fleming had a spat with him during the early 1960s and pinched his surname to give to one of his book (and later film) villains. As well as designing several private houses, shops and schools in London Goldfinger – who was a Hungarian émigré – designed a clutch of tower blocks including most famously Trellick Tower in North Kensington. This brutalist edifice, which features 31 storeys and some 217 flats, was originally built to house council tenants but a growing number of properties within it are now in private hands; a three bedroom apartment within it recently sold for nearly £700,000. Trellick Tower is an example of the controversy Modernism can stir up. Hated by many of the locals, it was given Grade II* status in 1998 and has been home to (and written about) by many musicians including Blur and The Clash. Perhaps finally Modernism is having its day. u

ou take a look at the unremarkable property details of this three bedroom Victorian house in South London and very little jumps out, apart from maybe its slightly shabby interior. And even that’s not too surprising – after all, the house is in the boho neighbourhood of Poets’ Corner near Herne Hill. “It’s one of those areas where a TV executive will live next to a wood cutter who will live next door to an up-and-coming singer,” says Anthony Shoring of local agent Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward. He says this property is generating plenty of online and offline viewings since it was listed on portal, OnTheMarket.com. So given South London is awash with terraced houses like this, what’s all the fuss about? The answer is that houses of this size and price within walking of a distance of a tube are becoming rare these days. The millionpound period home market is rapidly making its way further and further south of the Thames. Poets’ Corner is a rack of around six roads built between the twin forks of Railton Road and Dulwich Road north of Herne Hill. The area is called Poets’

Corner because most of the roads are named after bards – including Shakespeare, Milton and Chaucer. The developer who built these streets and houses during the late 19th century would be pleased. The area attracts the more artistic type including Claire Rayner’s son and restaurant critic Jay Rainer and singer La Roux, the ‘falsetto from the ghetto’ was brought up here. Poets’ Corner is popular not only because it’s a Conservation Area, but also because you’ve got one foot in Brixton and its reputation for urban grittiness, pop up restaurants, famous bars and clubs, while having another in Herne Hill, which is rapidly gentrifying into an outpost of Dulwich. “I’ve been selling homes here for eight years and the biggest joy of this area for me is Brockwell Park and its Lido, which is at the end of Chaucer Road,” says Anthony Shoring.

He says one downside is that good local schools are a bit thin on the ground and therefore the area attracts media types either without children or whose children have flown the nest. People like this, therefore, don’t need such large houses and tend to have more money at their disposal. This is all pushing up prices locally, and quite dramatically too. Houses like this have been going for nearer £1m but this property, because it has been rented until now and needs money spending on it, is going for somewhat less. Its interiors aren’t that bad really. The tenants who lived here until recently were a lucky bunch – one of the bedrooms has a chandelier and the house is awash with lovely, original fireplaces. On the flip side the lounge features an obligatory round paper lantern, beloved of all lets. “If the property’s right around here then there’s huge demand,” says Anthony. “We sold a house on Barwell Road recently and, after first listing it for £800,000, it went for £827,000 after sealed bids.” He also says a similar property to the Chaucer Road but in better condition went for £940,000 in Shakespeare Road recently, “which was new ground for us.” u
