hristmas is both a joy and a headache for all mums. From the presents to the cooking, the to-do list is endless. As a mother-of-three I know exactly how much effort goes into creating the perfect Christmas for children. In this issue we have all things festive covered. Check out our gift and decorating suggestions, memory-making Lapland holidays and top tips from super-stylish mums on how they plan for the big day. On a more serious note, we are also reporting on childbirth trends and maternity services in the UK, as well as discussing whether social media is having a negative effect on how we parent and our children's wellbeing. As the new editor of Mama, I’m delighted to be joined by two equally new columnists, dad-to-be Chris Cox and Jo Wimble-Groves, aka the Guilty Mother. We hope you enjoy their witty take on parenthood. A-lister Kate Hudson is also telling us what life is like as a celebrity mum and how she juggles fame with raising her two sons. Then in our interiors section leading interior designer Sophie Paterson talks us through how she created the perfect nursery for her much longed-for little girl. All the kind of inspirational parents that we love featuring in the magazine. So with Christmas nearly upon us, we wish you a wonderful festive season. It might require a lot work by us mums, but I think we can all agree it's worth it. Merry Christmas! BEAUTIFUL PIECES FOR AUTUMN WINTER. P. 24

he hashtag #momfail is not one you would naturally associate with Kate Hudson. So when she recently posted a photo on her Instagram account showing a pizza that was completely burned to the point of resembling a chocolate dessert, it might have surprised some. “I don’t usually post food stuff but I was inspired by my mom friends posting all their yummy healthy homemade recipes. So here it is....you’re welcome. First take the pizza out of the box. Set the oven to 375. Pour a glass of wine. Place the pizza in the oven. DO NOT set timer. Sip your wine. Recommended cooking time is 12 to 14 minutes,” she says in her post. “I say wait a good hour to get this perfect deep dark brown color. Or wait until your hungry kids come and ask when the pizza will be ready... drink more wine. #momfail”. If you know nothing about Hudson, this might seem out of place for a glamorous star. But in many ways she’s actually just another mum balancing kids and work, albeit with the perks of A-list lifestyle. As well as raising her two sons Ryder, 13 and Bingham, 6, Kate has a glittering Hollywood career, starring in blockbusters such such as Almost Fa-

mous, You, Me and Dupree and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. This month she is taking on one of the most challenging roles to date starring in Marshall, the dramatic retelling of a notorious 1941 Greenwich, Connecticut legal case in which she plays a wealthy socialite who accuses her black chauffeur of rape. But while her films are what made her famous, Kate is equally passionate about wellness. In 2013 she launched Fabletics, an athletic wear company that has grown into a $250 million corporate empire. Her affordable, stylish gym gear is now the go-to brand for all those who want to look good while they work out. Kate herself embodies everything the brand represents, embracing an extremely healthy lifestyle. But despite her toned physique and glowing skin, she remains realistic and down-to-earth in her aproach to wellness. “Trying to achieve physical perfection is ridiculous,” she admits. “To feel good about yourself you need to understand your body and what you need to feel good and healthy with what nature gave you. “I want to be as fit and healthy as I possibly can be not just for my own well-being, but for my family, and for my children.” Last year she decided to put these thoughts down on paper, writing her book Pretty Happy:

The Healthy Way to Love Your Body which immediately became a bestseller. In it she describes how she keeps fit and eats well, but also enjoys her life. Her latest book, Pretty Fun, focuses on how much she enjoys entertaining and celebrating. “I don’t believe in diets,” the 38 year-old refreshingly admits. “I believe in eating healthy and staying active. I hate the idea of turning the dining table into a very restrictive place. Eating, especially with your family, should be a fun activity and it’s a terrible thing if we rob ourselves of that pleasure.” Kate is very keen to ensure her sons have a similarly healthy lifestyle and tries to avoid sugar in their diet. She’s a big supporter of her friend Jamie Oliver’s campaign for a tax on fi zzy drinks. “I think the real issue with sugar is it acts like a drug and there’s too much in our food. It’s simple: it’s so bad for you. I know, it’s hard. I’ve got two kids and they go to school,

have snacks and eat a lot of sugar. But I think the more you educate your kids, and the more aware you are yourself, the better it is,”says Kate, who lives in LA with her children and boyfriend Danny Fujikawa. Loving the outdoors, yoga and anything that involves exercise, Kate says her boys have a role in her fitness regime. “Running after my kids is part of my workout routine!” she laughs. “My sons will often join me when I’m doing my workouts at home." “I hope my sons will always enjoy being active and that’s something that’s going to benefit them for the rest of their lives. My parents were always very active and we did a lot of biking and hiking together as a family.” The parents she refers to are of course Hollywood legends Goldie Hawn and Kurt Rus-

sell who raised Kate and her brother Oliver on a sprawling ranch in Colorado. “My mother is very optimistic and cheerful, but she also has a very sensitive and thoughtful side that people don’t often appreciate because of the kinds of fi lms she did and what a great comedienne she is,” she explains. “My father Kurt is much more pragmatic and more of a realist. But they both shared a common philosophy of creating a very happy and positive home life and that’s something I have always tried to do with my children.” At times that has not been easy for the star to achieve, having gone through a divorce and the breakdown of a second long-term relationship, but her parents' support has been invaluable. “My mom and I share everything. She’s my greatest confidente. It’s been very important and comforting for me to have that relationship, especially during the tough times." Just like all mums, Kate admits she has good days and bad ones and is just trying to do her best. The mother of two, who recently shaved her head for an upcoming role in the movie Sister, doesn’t shy away from discussing real life issues and has previously spoken candidly about how she juggles life as a single parent. “Some days I feel like I should win best mom of the day award, and some days I fi nd myself doing strange things that don’t have any real purpose, in faraway corners in my house, and I realise I am literally and deliberately hiding from my children. “It’s tiring, sometimes, but I have a lot of
help. When you’re a mother, you try to look after everyone and hold things together, even if you feel that things are wearing you down and you feel like you’re the one who needs support.” In a world where so many celebrities are trying paint the picture of perfect parenthood, it’s refreshing to hear her honest admissions about family life. But, no matter how many fi lm roles and book deals come her way, Kate says she always priorities her boys. “I listen to them and I’m in sync with them. I grew up with working parents, and you know, we never felt we were not the priority. I feel like the act with my kids is always putting them fi rst, and everything else comes after that. It’s that basic.” That will always be a #momwin in our book.

CHRISTMAS Our way
We ask three super stylish mums how they do Christmas and what they are hoping to find under the tree this year. Wo r d s M O R AG T U R N E R

What’s your favourite Christmas tradition? A My family has a European background and I love the traditions that brings. It starts with St Nicholas who ‘visits’ on the 6th of December - you put your shoes by the fi replace and they are fi lled with treats when you wake up. Even at the age of 28 my mum still delivers us a pair of fi lled shoes each year. Q

Q Where will you be buying presents from this year? A I’m an avid online shopper in order to get some of the most unusual gifts from far and wide - not to mention how convenient online shopping is. I’ve just had a baby daughter and have discovered the most incredible baby websites including Smallable – fantastic pieces.
What are you planning to give? As mentioned, I’ve just had a daughter so perhaps lots of personalised gifts relating to her. Q
Q Where do you celebrate Christmas and who with? A It’s all about family so will be celebrating surrounded by my huge wider family. We’re 35 + and growing. Q What will you be wearing to parties this year? A The festive season is a perfect excuse for a bit of sparkle. I love adding a statement shoe or clutch. Q How do you decorate your home for Christmas? A Very traditional. I love classic reds and antique gold on the tree with glass ornaments. My only one no-no is tinsel.

Q And what are you hoping will be waiting under the tree for you? A You know, I am so weird, I get anxious about receiving gifts! I am SO much better at giving them. So, as long as Rich and Fin are happy, I will be happy. Anything for me is just a bonus (but if it comes in a little black box from a well-known ecommerce site, I won't be complaining). Q Where do you celebrate Christmas and who with? A Christmas is always me, Rich and Fin, usually with my mom and Rich’s mom. I hope it will be the same this year... I’m not the world’s best cook (read terrible), so we’re going to a local pub for lunch which takes the stress out of everything.
Michelle is the founder of mums' meet-up app Peanut. She lives with her husband and son, Fin.
peanut-app.io Q What’s your favourite Christmas tradition? A We’re creating new traditions! I am Catholic, and my husband is Jewish. Finlay’s birthday is also in December. It means we spend the month of December in constant celebration. From lighting the Hannukah candles, to putting up the tree, and of course, the Elf on the Shelf keeping an eye on Fin’s behaviour in December, I love every minute of it. Since Fin was born, we’ve been taking him to Santa’s grotto at Harrods. More than anything, I love that I have a photo of him every year, and can see how much he’s changed.
What are you planning to give? A Every year I make my husband a Rebus (a kind of scrap book of pictures which spell out a message-it’s cuter than it sounds). So, without ruining any surprises, I’ll defi nitely be giving one of those.
Q
Q Where will you be buying presents from this year? A Amazon is my BFF at Christmas. I work long hours, so being able to wind down with phone in hand, shopping for the family is heaven. It takes the stress out of it, although those brown boxes just don’t stop appearing from the beginning of December, which is a nightmare! There’s also something really magical about Selfridges on Christmas Eve. A sort of tradition I like to do on my own (making mental notes of my Sale wishlist).
Q What will you be wearing to parties this year? A Oh, I have seen so much emerald green around this year, which I LOVE. Zara has some amazing fabrics, and Boden Icons collection is divine. Plush velvet suit anyone?
What’s your fondest Christmas memory? Oh defi nitely 2013 when Fin was born. He was a few weeks old, I felt a bit shell shocked, and more than a little scared of being a new mama, he was so fragile. By far the best gift I’ve ever had. Q A

Q What’s your favourite Christmas tradition? A My house if full of traditions I have started over the years that the kids insist on us sticking to religiously. My favourite is probably tree decorating day. I gave up years ago on trying to have a beautifully curated tree and let the kids go for it with their mates, which is always amusing as it gets very animated. They each get a new decoration every year, to start their collection for when they have their own homes. We have a gingerbread housemaking competition and the mulled wine comes out for the fi rst of December, this officially kick starts the season for us. Q Where will you be buying presents from this year? A Mostly online as I don’t have a lot of time. It’s a combo of Hush, Cox & Cox and H&M – this usually covers all bases. Oh and Amazon defi nitely comes in handy for last minute stuff. Q A

anything with a dinosaur on it will work. The older kids are into board games and clothes. Q And what are you hoping will be waiting under the tree for you? A All I want is time wrapped in a box – an extra 24 hours would be amazing. Failing that a night in a sexy hotel in the countryside with an open fi re would do me fi ne too. Q Where do you celebrate Christmas and who with? A We always have it at home, as the kids prefer it. Everyone piles over to us, we have a huge dining room table and I cook for the masses – it’s the one time of the year that I still cook. We have this mad present stealing game that we play that gets everyone’s competitive MAGGIE WOULD LIKE A juices flowing. WEEKEND BREAK AT A COSY HOTEL LIKE COWORTH Q What will you be wearing to parties this year? A I’m pretty casual, not too much of a dress girl. I tend to wear leather trousers and heels. Although I am partial to a glittery, tacky Christmas jumper too. Q How do you decorate your home for Christmas? A My eldest daughter has the design gene, so we normally pick a style and go with that. We use loads of fresh flowers and try not to be too cool for school, so there is still some fun elements for the little ones. Q What’s most special about this time of year? A London is just magical around this time of the year, its full of love and festivity. Coming from New Zealand, where Christmas is not quite as cosy, I love this time of year, wrapping up, heading to Christmas markets and making time for each other. Q What’s your fondest Christmas memory? A With four kids, there are so many and each year adds more. We have a family scrapbook that we fi ll out each year with photos and messages so we can look back and remember things that we might have forgotten otherwise.

#motherhood Is social media having a negative effect on how you parent? Wo r d s M O R AG T U R N E R

e’ve all seen it. At a party the birthday boy or girl is about to blow out their candles. Friends and parents are gathered round waiting to sing. But, before the special moment can take place, the mother hosting just has to turn the cake to a better angle/adjust her child’s outfit/move the kid with chocolate smeared all over their face suitably far away from her little one. Why? For the perfect social media shot of course. Instead of living in the moment and just enjoying the scene in front of her (which is, in reality, probably pretty chaotic) she needs to halt proceedings, even if just for a minute, to make the shot that little bit more ‘Instagramable’. So what you might ask? It’s not that big a deal to make everyone wait just a few moments. But once this is applied to everything from birthday parties to holiday snapshots to what you’ve cooked your child for breakfast, suddenly a lot of precious family time is lost.
44
|
Indeed experts are now warning that social media use could be far more detrimental to our wellbeing, and that of our children, than we realise. “When the ‘will to share’ supersedes being present in the moment you know you have an issue,” explains Dr Aaron Balick, a clinical psychotherapist who specialises in social media. “It is so important to experience what is actually happening around you. If you spend an entire birthday party or school concert taking photos or videos to share, while you might have those to look back on forever, you will remember less of the actual event and how it felt to be there enjoying it. Sometimes it really is better to leave your phone in your pocket.” While documenting events helps us preserve the memory, recording too much (or indeed all of our lives in some cases) can rob us of the enjoyment of living in the moment. When it comes to motherhood, this means missing out on actually experiencing the milestones in your child’s life that, frankly, you will never get back. Dr Balick, author of The Psychodynamics of Social Networking, also believes we shouldn’t underestimate the impact social media use has on our children.

“Children, especially younger children, need recognition. They need their parents to respond to their distress and share in their happiness. It’s crucial for their development,” he points out. “If when they are telling you about their day or reading their homework to you, you pick up your phone to check a notification, that disrupts that important interaction. By the time they are saying ‘mummy put your phone away’ you know they are really suffering the effects of their parent not responding. There is a time and place to use social media but it’s not when you should be focusing on your child.” Social media has become the most powerful sharing tool on the planet accessed by billions. 80 million photos are uploaded to Instagram every 24 hours and in the UK alone 30 million people log on to Facebook daily. Sharing platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, allow us to connect with others and form online relationships and communities in a way that has never been possible before. Social media promotes business, enhances communication and has become an invaluable networking tool. But as well as a shopping and advertising vehicle, for parents it has translated into the forming of often very supportive and helpful online communities that regularly spill over into the real world, creating friendships between those who might otherwise never have met.

recent study showed that 68 per cent of mothers use Instagram regularly with more than half shopping directly from posts. However, for all these positive connections, there are serious concerns that have arisen. A report earlier this year by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) found that its use is having a detrimental affect on the mental health of young people, with Instagram being named the worse offender. The Status of Mind Report found clear links
46
|
between social media use and increased rates of depression, anxiety and poor sleep. Shirley Cramer, chief executive of the RSPH, believes that these damaging effects are not limited to just the under 25s as 70% of people aged 35 to 45 in the UK also use it. “Social media has been described as more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol, and is now so entrenched in the lives of young people that it is no longer possible to ignore it when talking about their mental health,” she points out. “But it’s not just the young who are influenced by this,” she continues. “If we are talking about mothers using it then I can see how it could easily have a similar effect. “We can now spend hours scrolling through carefully curated shots of other people’s worlds that appear to be perfect. Of course this can cause a mother to feel anxious and worry that her life isn’t as great as that of those she sees on Instagram. “It’s human nature to compare, but it used to be that we could only really do that
~
with those around us. Now we can access thousands of people that we don’t know.”
I
ndeed it has turned what used to be the relatively private world of parenting into a spectator sport - and a competitive one at that. From the positive pregnancy test and the gender reveal, to the ohso-perfect baby shower and even the actual birth, every aspect of having children is being shared online. The important announcements that would have once been preserved for an inner circle are now being broadcast to unknown followers all over the world. Judith Donath, author of Social Machine: Designs for Living Online and professor of Media Arts at Harvard University, thinks one of the biggest issues is that women don’t always paint a realistic picture of motherhood. “Looking at another woman’s perfectly photoshopped image can make you feel really low and new mums can be especially vulnerable. Maybe their baby isn’t sleeping or they are struggling to get back into their jeans and seeing these edited images can make them feel isolated. “Social media can make people show off and encourage competitiveness which isn’t good for anyone. It's hard to remember that you are often seeing the best bits of someone
absolutely-mama.co.uk

else’s life and comparing it to your worst. It used to be just celebrities that could manage such styled, idyllic images, but now anyone with a smartphone can do the same. “Often those trying to project this ideal are themselves very insecure and feel the need to share every detail to prove something to the world. It can be a harmful vicious cycle.” Yet Donath also believes that social media can, if used in a more honest and supportive way, enhance a woman’s experience of motherhood. “People can use it to form friendships and connect to others who are going through the same experiences. It’s not all bad.” Whether social media use has a positive or negative impact on a mother, it is her choice as an adult how she wishes to use it. Of greater concern to many experts is the posting of images of children who have no control over their online identities. ‘Sharenting’ - the term coined to describe the current trend for sharing images of your offspring online - is causing concern that the children are being put at risk. “We suggest parents carefully consider the impact of posting photos and videos of their children online before doing so,” says Amanda Azeez, Associate Head of Child Safety Online, Innovation & Impact, NSPCC. “Each time a photo or video is uploaded it creates a digital footprint of a child which follows them into adult life. It is always important to ask a child for their permission before posting. For very young children, think about whether they would be happy for you to post or if it will embarrass them later. If you aren’t sure, it’s best not to post.” The NSPCC also urge parents to think about safety risks. “Make sure that there isn’t anything in the photos or videos which could allow a child’s location or identity to be recognised, such as school logos or signs, road names, or names of clubs that your child attends,” says Azeez. “Turn your privacy settings on and turn off your geolocation settings." And it’s not just experts who are worried sharenting has gone too far. Many parents themselves don’t agree with the trend. According to a recent report from Ofcom, the UK’s communication watchdog, 56% said they completely avoided sharenting. Most wanted to protect their children’s privacy. However one in five parents asked said they posted such images at least once a month.
And while some will only post the occasional shot, others will blog extensively about every element of their child’s life along with images to illustrate it. “Parents are really divided about whether it’s sensible to share photos of their children online,” says Ofcom’s consumer group director Lindsey Fussell. “Of those who do share, over 80% feel very confident about restricting who can see those photos, to friends and family,” she continues.
S OCIAL MEDIA
~
media. Even if your child is very young, they will begin to notice how much time you spend on your phone and it will become the norm to them. “Put the phone away at the dinner table, set limits on your own usage and be a role model for your kids,” says Cramer who is taking part in an All Party Parliamentary group being set up to look at the effects of social media onmental health. “Studies show that taking a break from social media makes people feel more relaxed and happy. Turn your phone off for a while and see what happens.” There can be no doubt that the like of Instagram and Twitter offer a world of opportunity to mothers to make new friends and access useful information. But maybe we need to be mindful when building these online connections that we don’t miss out on precious time with those who matter the most: our children.
“MANY INFANTS AQ U IRE A DIGITAL FO OTP RINT BEFO RE THEIR FIRST TO OTH. ”
M
any of those who do sharent are members of the media savvy generation who have grown up cataloguing their lives on the likes of Facebook and therefore see posting about life as parents as the natural next step. Research by AVG, an internet security firm, claims that more than a third of British children have had images of themselves uploaded to social media by their parents - many infants acquire a digital footprint before their first tooth. “It’s difficult for an individual to control that information once it’s out there," says Tony Anscombe of AVG. "When it comes to our children, we’re making the decision to put things out on their behalf, and what seems appropriate now may not be appropriate in ten years time.” Yet in the Ofcom report only 15% had concerns about what their children might think when they grew up. For some posting on social media is a way to smugly show off their child’s latest achievement, while others, such as the many parenting blogs, prefer to present a realistic, honest and often funny picture of life with small children, with many mums and dads enjoying bonding over their experience of parenthood. But one of the most important things any parent can do is set a good example when using social

lright, hands up. Who loves the 'spirit of Christmas'? I would imagine that most of us do. The music, the wine, the food, the wearing of silly sweaters. The list goes on. But, as much as I enjoy the festivities, there are just a few things I want to get off my chest. I'm sure you all can relate to this.
The Build Up
I’ve got some friends who are already buying up Christmas jumpers. Really? I have politely reminded them that it is weeks till the big day and they should not be thinking about this yet. And beware cheap, numbers - they are a walking fi re hazard. Take my advice and invest in understated cashmere that will see you through until February. A little less Noel Edmonds, a little more Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Well that's the look I'm hoping for anyway. Back to the 'too soon' note: let's talk about Christmas decorations lighting up shops by the end of September. Trust me, I went into John Lewis last week. When did Christmas start so early? Last year it had me thinking that by mid-November I should be making a gingerbread house with the kids. I wouldn’t recommend this. In my head it was going to be a masterpiece, but in reality, it was a congealed mess. By the time it was Christmas, I realised I may have peaked too soon.
Wo r d s J O W I M B L E- G ROV E S
When it comes to buying presents for the kids, there's always those ‘must buy’ toys that nobody can get hold of for love nor money? It is so frustrating. A few years back it was all about the Elsa doll from Frozen. Remember that? In a flash they were out of stock everywhere. My daughter was adamant it was the only thing she wanted and nothing else mattered. After searching the entire country, I managed to get one online but I had to pay a ridiculously inflated price. I was so resentful at shelling out almost double the cash, but what could I do? On Christmas morning, I couldn’t wait to see her face when she opened the wrapping paper. Naturally it started with a hug and a squeal of joy, which made me feel like the perfect mother (for a few moments). Half an hour later and the doll had been tossed aside in favour of the chocolate coins. Not winning.

As one of the founding members of Made in Chelsea, until recently Binky Felstead was best known lead member of the jet-set gang living the high life and documenting it all on the hit reality TV show. That was until earlier this year when Binky surprised her fans when she announced she was expecting a baby with her co-star and on/off boyfriend Josh ‘JP’ Peterson. In June she gave birth to a baby girl, India, and since then has spent her time focusing on all things motherhood. “I’m really loving the whole thing – the love I have for India is indescribable and it’s just growing. The lack of sleep is hard, but overall I’m enjoying it, dirty nappies and all. It really has completed me,” says the 27 year-old. Inspired by how much she enjoys dressing baby India, Binky has collaborated with childrenswear brand My 1st Years to design a collection of baby clothes and accessories. “It’s a dream come true because I’ve been a customer of My 1st Years for years – it’s my go-to shop for baby and children’s gifts,” says Binky. “My collection has 10 wardrobe staples in two simple, classy, classic prints – Pink Crown or Blue Splash. There’s a sleepsuit, pyjama set, comforter, blanket and a selection of bibs - all can be personalised. It’s available from 0-3 months to 5-6 years and prices start from £9 as we wanted to ensure everything was still very affordable because babies and children THE MADE IN CHELSEA STAR LOVES grow so fast.” BEING A MUM She has loved designing such pretty baby clothes for

both boys and girls. “If you pushed me I’d say my favourite piece is the pink personalised babygrow because this is what India is living in, and her personalised bib. For boys I love the PJ set with personalised pocket.” Binky and Josh recently starred in their own show ‘Born in Chelsea’ following their experience as new parents. “We’re loving it,” she says when asked how the pair are adapting to parenthood. “We’re a great team. I’m an early bird and he is a night owl so it's worked out well. He’s really taken to fatherhood, it’s great to see.” Both are looking forward to their daughter’s fi rst Christmas. “We’re planning on spending Christmas in the Sussex countryside with my family and sister, who has had her baby recently too.” But before that Binky will be launching more of her collection. “I have some gorgeous bits coming out for Christmas so keep a look-out and we loved fi lming Born in Chelsea so watch this space.” my1st ye ars .com November / December 2017

I N S TA- M A M A Every month we'll be chatting to an inspirational mama instagrammer. This time we meet ultra-glam style blogger Laura Wills @t h e f a s h i o n b u g b l o g
ABSOLUTELY MAMA: Tell us the story behind your amazing blog? LAURA: I've always been obsessed with fashion. Back in 2014, just before I started the blog, I was a bit lost with what I wanted to do career-wise. I began blogging really as a sort of creative outlet for myself and would share my posts and outfit pics amongst friends. It got such great feedback and I loved the writing aspect as well as putting together looks, so I decided to make a go of it and turn it into a career. AB: You have a very loyal instagram following. How do you feel about the insta community? LAURA: I feel very lucky that I have such a lovely loyal following - I connect with some followers almost daily and some have even become friends. They are all so sweet, positive and encouraging which has played a really important role in building my blog.
even the most casual jeans and a tee combo. AB: What are your favourite mummy and baby brands? LAURA: For Mila I love Belle Enfant, Oscar et Valentine, Marie Chantal, La Coqueta, Chloe and Tartine et Chocolat. Zara do amazing cashmere for kids. My fav shoe brands for her are Moc Stars and Easy Peasy. And Trotters are great for lots of things - I get all of Mila's bows from there. For myself I love Zimmermann, Gucci and Caroline Constas. Zara and Topshop are my favourite high street shops. And Chanel and Goyard for bags.
AB: Your gorgeous little girl Mila often features on your feed and you're expecting number two - what do you love most about motherhood? LAURA: Everything! I loved the newborn stage and then seeing her develop and learn key things such as crawling and walking. And now she is a little girl and it's SO much fun. Being a mother has grounded me and I feel happier than I've ever been. I can't wait for the next one. AB: What are your tips for staying stylish when pregnant or running around after little ones? LAURA: Accessories - I love a statement earring and some fabulous shoes. They can brighten up November / December 2017

THE MAKING OF US
Mama chats to Jessie Jia and Joanne Wallace-Thompson of Hollyz about their beautiful childrenswear brand.
STRIPE CREW NECK CASHMERE BLEND JUMPER FOR BOYS

ABSOLUTELY MAMA: Tell us the background to the brand. JESSIE JIA: The company was launched in 2015, founded by myself and Joanne. I have a degree in logistics and Joanne has a degree in technical textile design and surface pattern. We both have daughters who are 8 years-old. When we looked at the choice of girl’s clothes on the high street, we just saw pieces that were flouncy, not seasonal appropriate or downright uncomfortable to wear. What we couldn't fi nd was anything warm and comfortable yet stylish. The fusion of our skills resulted in a partnership of two likeminded people who wanted to create a new brand of warm luxury cashmere and cashmere blend garments with hand fi nished details for girls and boys aged 2-13. A M: What were you doing before Hollyz? JOANNE WALLACE-THOMPSON: After a career in fabric design I was looking for an opportunity to use my creative skills in a new flexible working environment. For Jessie, working as a logistics manager offered little flexibility too. So, for both of us, working from home and fitting our working days around school runs and being a hands-on parent was important. A M: What inspires your designs? JW-T: Jessie and I have a mutual passion for fashion.

THERE ARE PLANS TO INCREASE THE RANGE FOR BOYS
We don’t struggle for inspiration as there are so many avenues to pick it up. We are both very visual and there is so much to see in everyday life, if you are open enough to see it, store and record it for future reference. We love visiting and taking photographs in interesting places, such as the National Sculpture Park and Chatsworth, in Derbyshire. We bounce ideas off each other, so when it comes to putting together our bi-annual collections, everything falls into place quite smoothly. Our daughters model for us and their fashion likes and dislikes, particularly wearability and comfort, is something we take seriously when creating our range. A M: What are your favourite pieces from the collection? JJ: We pretty much agree that our Classic range of pure cashmere cardigans is our favouritie. They are so soft and comfortable for the wearer. Our ageappropriate images on the reverse of the garments, which include ballet pumps, kittens and shooting stars, are all decorated with diamante trim and hand embroidered, making them gorgeous and unique. For an older girl, our cashmere and fine wool blend cape - as featured in British Vogue's Centennial edition - is a firm favourite. A M: Where do you source from? JJ: All the logistics and design operations are based in the UK and we source our cotton prints from Liberty of London. Some of the manufacturing is done at home too, whilst the manufacture and knitting of the cashmere garments is done in China. A M: You’re working mums - tell us how you balance the business with motherhood? JW-T: For both Jessie and I a typical day is juggling work with looking after family and doing the school runs. Fortunately we don’t live too far away from one another, so after doing the morning run we meet around 9am, have a full working day looking through colour cards, exploring design ideas, hand drawing new designs and then disappear around 4pm to pick up the girls from school. Regular use of email and Whatsapp keeps us in touch when we are not in the same room. A M: What has been your greatest achievement with Hollyz? JJ: Definitely when British Vogue found us on social media and invited us to feature in their centennial edition. Our daughters were featured wearing the cashmere and fine wool capes with the diamante heart trim on the reverse. The baby pink colourway sold out overnight.

A M: And your biggest challenge? JW-T: To gain market awareness for the Hollyz brand. For Jessie and I personally, it's improving my IT skills so I can work quicker and smarter, while for Jessie it’s to have an clearer understanding of business operation and procedure. A M: What’s next for Hollyz? J W-T: Jessie and I plan to continue the growth of the brand through trade shows, our website and social media. Also, with a relatively new brand, the friends network plays a key role in market exposure. For the current season we have redesigned the bestselling cape into a seasonally-appropriate weight and introduced some very different cashmere styles and shapes that will appeal to an older girl who might want a more ‘street’ fashion look. We are receiving positive feedback from mums who are asking if we make some of the girls' styles in sizes that will fit mums. We plan to increase the range of boys' garments too. Recently our biggest growth area has been our handmade hair accessories, which we are now selling in the UK and internationally. It's a very exciting time for us both and we look forward to putting our plans into place.

Childbirth
TO DAY
How are women in the UK choosing to give birth and what options are open to mums-to-be? Mama reports on how and where you can have your baby.
Wo r d s M O R AG T U R N E R
D
id you have a ‘normal’ birth? How many of us have been asked that after we've had a baby? Most take the ‘n’ word as a stand in for ‘natural’ when discussing the delivery of babies, but what does it really mean? In reality ‘the norm’ for one woman can be totally different to her friend/ sister/neighbour and referring to one birth as more 'normal’ than the other can lead to real feelings of upset and failure for new mums, who somehow feel they fell short of the mark by not ticking certain birth boxes. So tricky a word is it that the Royal College of Midwives recently abandoned their eight year long ‘normal birth’ campaign. Since 2005 the RCM has run the initiative encouraging expectant mothers to give birth without medical interventions including epidurals, inductions and caesareans. The midwifery trade union have instead started to use the term 'physiological births' to describe those without interventions as part of an overhaul of professional guidelines.
74
|
“There is a danger that if you just talk about normal births – and particularly if you call it a campaign – it kind of sounds as if you’re only interested in women who have a vaginal birth without intervention,” explains Professor Cathy Warwick, former RCM chief executive. “What we don’t want to do is in any way contribute to any sense that a woman has failed because she hasn’t had a normal birth. Unfortunately, that seems to be how some women feel," says Warwick. But what exactly is the norm for mothers in the UK today? How and where are women giving birth and what options are open to mothers-to-be? Let’s start with the stats. Last year nearly 700,000 babies were born in England and Wales, nine out of ten in NHS hospitals. Of those, 27% of babies were delivered by caesarean section, an increase of 3% on ten years previous. Of those who delivered vaginally, nearly 22% were induced and 12.9% experienced some kind of instrumental intervention such as forceps. At first glance these figures may not mean a great deal, but on closer inspection, and when compared to the same data from previous

generations, we can start to see a picture developing about women’s choices today and what services are available to them. For example, approximately 40% of mothers give birth without medical interventions now, compared to three decades ago when 60% did so. According to Natalie Carter, consultant midwife at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, the increase of choice with in maternity services is leading to women making informed decisions. "The recent Better Births report recommends that care becomes more personalised and individual to that woman and her family and that continuity of care from both midwives and obstetricians will help support improved outcomes," says Carter. "Women have lots of choices regarding the care they receive from the NHS today, from place of birth to the type of pain relief they would like to use." Th is may explain the
increase in elective C-sections and the use of pain relief such as epidurals. Indeed the NHS have been trialing a scheme giving mothersto-be a personal health budget of around £500 to spend on things they believe will help them in pregnancy and birth such as reflexology sessions or hiring a birth pool. After an assessment of needs, the mother is told how much money is available to her and draws up plans for using the budget in ways that are intended to benefit her health and wellbeing. These plans are agreed with the primary care trust (PCT), after scrutiny for possible clinical and other risks. The money can be held and managed by a health professional; held by another third party on behalf of the patient; taken as a cash direct payment held by the patient; or as a combination of these. As yet the scheme has yet to be rolled out, but the trial is a promising step towards empowering mothers.

rish Nolan-Melfi is an experienced midwife who worked in the NHS for over 20 years before joining Private Midwives, an independent practice, in 2014. She noticed considerable changes in the attitudes of the women she see now from when she fi rst started out. “Expectations have changed and rightly so,” she points out. ‘Women are now more educated and informed. They want to know what options are available to them and how to access those. Birth can be unpredictable, but regardless of the type of birth experience they are hoping for, the vast majority of women want to have some control over what happens to their bodies,” says Nolan-Melfi, who helps her clients deliver their babies at home and in hospital. If you are willing to pay for an independent midwife - which costs in the region of £5,000 for antenatal care, postnatal care and birth support - the continuity of care is guaranteed. You will meet with your midwife through your pregnancy and, barring any extreme unforeseen circumstances, she will be November / December 2017

present at the birth. A similar experience is offered by private hospitals, at varying costs. But what if this isn’t an option, how can you receive similar care on the NHS? “I would encourage women to write to the Head of Midwifery at their local hospital and ask if they can see the same midwife at each antenatal appointment and even request she be there at the birth. It’s not impossible but you have to ask. Also, research how good the continuity of care is at your hospital and if it’s not as good as you might hope then consider another hospital. You have the right to choose,” says Nolan-Melfi. While it is impossible to predict the exact labour and birth experience you will ultimately have, by making informed choices you can increase your chances of the delivery you want, such as a water birth for example. By researching the maternity services at your local hospital you can weigh up your chances of receiving the type of care you want. And it’s not as difficult to find that information as you might think. The Care Quality Commission inspect all maternity services in England and Wales, from NHS and private hospitals to independent midwives, and all their reports are available to the public. Their recent survey of over 1,000 women who had given birth in England in the last three years, found that 40% either weren’t aware or didn’t feel they had a choice about their birth hospital. Of those who picked their hospital 53% stated this was a ‘very important’ decision, however 57% spent less than an hour choosing theirs, suggesting a lack of awareness about the amount of information that is available to help make an informed choice.
“Pregnancy is a very exciting time but it can also be daunting and many women feel at their most vulnerable," says Heidi Smault, Deputy Chief Inspector at the Care Quality Commission. "Women have the option to have a hospital, birthing centre or home birth. It’s vital they know they have a choice. While advice from family and friends can be useful, it’s important expectant parents know there’s free independent information available." The CQC found the top influencing factors affecting where women choose to give birth were the hospital being close to home (65%), followed by hospital cleanliness and safety (55%), a good reputation (39%) and caring staff (36%). CQC inspection reports include detailed information asking these key questions and the research found that of those who did use the inspection reports, 95% found them helpful in informing their birth choice decision. There is a huge variation in maternity services. In the most recent round of inspections 5% were found to be inadequate; 52% had room for improvement; 38% were good and 5% were outstanding. Some will offer greater continuity of care and have better outcomes and by reading the reports you can find out if where you are having your baby has a good maternity services record. You can also read praise and complaints from other women. Smault encourages women to contact the CQC to share their birth experience, good or bad, so that other women can benefit from that information when making their birth choices.
CHILDBIRTH
“We need patient feedback. Speak to your GP or midwife or contact the CQC directly via our website which is easy to use,” she says. “It’s not always the clinical outcome that determines how a woman perceives her experience, but if she feels she was supported, informed and in control throughout the birth, then she is more likely to feel that she has had a positive experience." Advice is constantly changing and being updated, so it can seem overwhelming when you go from looking at that positive pregnancy test to deciding on what type of birth you would ideally like to have and who you want looking after you during it. For example, in 2014 the National Institute for Health Care and Excellence (NICE) published guidelines saying that women with uncomplicated pregnancies (about 45% of the total) were better off in the hands of midwives than hospital doctors during birth. For these low-risk mothers-to-be, giving birth in a traditional maternity ward increased the chances of surgical intervention and therefore infection, the regulator said. Hospital births were more likely to end in cesarean sections or involve episiotomies, a government financed 2011 study carried out by researchers at Oxford University showed. The risk of death or serious complications for babies was the same in all three settings, except in the case of first-time mothers where home births run a slightly increased risk. While these stats (along with the other million pieces of information that mums-tobe can find with a quick Google search) make interesting reading, they are only relevant if taken in the context of your own personal set of circumstances. A home birth may well be off the cards if you have any complications. “Ultimately the best people to talk to are the medical team who know you,” advises Nolan-Melfi. “There is no such thing as a ‘normal’ birth, but there is the best one for you and your baby.”

Considering how much I love a facial or a massage, it’s almost odd that this was my first trip to a Cowshed spa. For years I’ve heard friends talk about how great they are, so I decided it was time to try the place out for myself. One of the best things about Cowshed is that they are all over the place - there are six in London alone. I opted for the one in Shoreditch as it’s handy for my office and headed off after a long day at my desk to indulge in a bit of me time. My treatment of choice was a Cowshed Signature Facial as I felt I could do with a bit of brightening up. Arriving at the spa, I was met by my lovely therapist Joanna who sat me down to ask exactly what I was hoping to get out of the facial. The treatment itself was fantastic. Joanna started with a double cleanse, followed by extractions (my least favourite bit so thankfully there weren’t many) and next was the all important massage which I can only describe as dreamy. Then a nourishing face mask, during which Joanna gave me a head massage. Bliss. Afterwards she advised me on exactly what she used. The products smelt divine, the setting was stylish and the whole experience was utterly reviving. I floated home with glowing skin. I’m now making it my mission to try all the Cowshed spas. cowshedonline.com

Absolutely Mama: How did you go about planning Ava’s nursery? Sophie Paterson: As soon as I knew I was having a girl I knew I wanted to use a pallette of soft dusty pink combined with antique brass accents on a neutral base of taupe and cream. It’s a colour combination I have always loved, it is so warm, feminine and pretty. I have designed a number of nurseries for clients previously so I have quite a good formula. I like to create a room that will grow with the baby and won’t feel irrelevant once they are at school. I started with the space planning as I do on all my projects. I knew I wanted a sofa bed, a rocking chair and a chest of drawers that could double up as a changing station and so I played around with the layout until I found something that flowed and was functional with set areas for each activity of playing, reading, nursing, changing and sleeping. The pieces I found far and wide from the chandelier and cot in LA to the mobile I found on Etsy and the wallpaper
that I sourced in the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre. It was a labour of love and such a dream to design a nursery for my own baby finally. AM: What did you love most about designing it? SP: Nurseries are always special and magical to design- they encapsulate so much love and excitement. To be able to design a nursery for my own baby after having suffered multiple miscarriages was a dream come true. It took us four years to have Ava and I was so grateful to have a happy ending with a healthy baby after going through that. The interiors were beautiful and I loved designing the room but I was also very nervous about tempting fate. I had it all planned in my head for months before I felt secure enough to buy anything. AM: What do you consider to be the most important factors when designing a home with children and pets in mind? SP: Where to start. Fabrics I would say are

key- make sure they are dark enough with enough pattern or texture to hide stains. Flooring as well, make sure it is easy to keep clean. Don’t choose a tile that is porous or has a texture where dirt can get ingrained- it will make upkeep a nightmare. In Ava’s room I used a rug that can be jet washed if the worst was to happen. I love how it looks but it is also reassuring to know that if there was a nappy disaster I could deal with it without replacing the carpet. I usually use vinyl wallpapers in a high traffic area where there are pets or lots of little grubby hands to leave marks on the walls – they are wipe clean which is ideal.
Ultimately, homes are for living in, and whilst you want a home that is beautiful you also want one that is relaxing. If you make sure you think about the practicalities and combine this in a way where it still feels luxurious and elegant then your home will be enjoyable to live in as well as look beautiful. AM: What are your favourite children’s interiors brands? SP: I ordered the cot from Restoration Hardware in America which has a great selection of children’s furniture. Sadly it is expensive and fairly laborious to arrange
shipping with them to the UK. The art with the baby animals was by Sharon Montrose who is also based in the US and doesn’t ship to the UK (I like to make life difficult for myself). Pretty much everything else I designed and had made bespoke. We make and design most of the furniture bespoke for all our projects so that we get the perfect fit, proportions and style for each room. So designing the nursery I couldn’t resist designing the furniture too. AM: Where else do you shop for Ava? SP: When Ava was little and before she started weaning, I bought a lot of clothes November / December 2017

from Harrods baby department. I love brands including Tartine et Chocolat and Belle Enfant, but now she is completely weaned and crawling around the floor it’s impossible to keep her pristine so I’ve rediscovered the high street with Zara being a particular favourite. AM: What do you love most about being a mum? SP: I love watching her grow, it makes me want to have a pause button when I see how quickly the first year has gone, but at the same time I burst with pride every time she learns something new and watching her confidence grow. She has just recently developed a great sense of humour and loves doing funny things to make us laugh. She laughs so much, and it makes us both so happy. AM: And what do you find most challenging? SP: Combining running a business with being a mum is full on. Both require so much time and I have definitely had to sacrifice almost all 'me time' to make it work this last year. I worked right up to the day I had Ava and within a week I was back checking emails… I’m lucky that I love what I do but I’m very concious that I want to treasure this time with Ava too, so I make sure I have one or two days during the week where I am with her all day and then weekends are all about her too. I’m lucky that I get offered so many great projects and opportunities with my business but I only say yes to the ones I feel hugely excited by as otherwise I could find myself overstretched and miss out on things with Ava. I’m fortunate to have a great team that work with me on all our projects and an understanding husband SOPHIE AND AVA when I have to work in the HAVING A CUDDLE AFTER BATH TIME evenings after Ava has gone to bed. AM: Do you have any tips for other mums on storage solutions for their nurseries and playrooms?
SOPHIE USED A PALETTE OF DUSKY PINK AND BRASS IN AVA'S ROOM
SP: I have wicker baskets breeding in my house at the moment. I can’t keep up with all the toys Ava keeps being given. I think people like to buy the brightest ugliest toys to watch my reaction, but it’s amazing how you just don’t mind a bit of mess even if you’re naturally OCD. AM: Tell us more about your interior design background? SP: I first started working for a property developer and started my first project 10 years ago in 2007. I set up my business in 2008 so that I could also take on private clients as well as working with the developer. I always knew I wanted to be an interior designer, right from being obsessed with rearranging my bedroom as a five year-old to getting work experience at Zoffany and Cole and Son in Chelsea Harbour at 16. It was always a huge passion of mine. As a designer you get better every year and with every project you never stop learning.

AM: How do you balance work and motherhood? SP: With a lot of support. I have a nanny, a housekeeper, a hands-on husband who is devoted to Ava and also a great team of designers at work. I can’t pretend to do it all, I’m so lucky to have great support in all areas of my life. Even with all of them it is still hard work and you feel like you never sit down or stop. I work most evenings but I try and ensure I have some work-life balance by keeping the weekends completely free.

IZABELA MINKIEWICZ Ever wondered what Royalty and the A-list BEGAN HER FABULOUS buy for their baby's’ nursery? Well Izabela BUSINESS 10 YEARS AGO Minkiewicz might just know the answer. As the owner of the Chelsea-based boutique Blue Almonds where the Duchess of Cambridge was famously spotted shopping with her mother Carole Middleton when expecting Prince George, she has a long list of celebrity clients. And now, having just a launched a new concierge service she’s helping other mums to find the perfect items for their little ones too. “Shopping for their baby’s nursery can be overwhelming for parents-to-be, which is why we decided to launch our own interior design consultancy service,” says Izabela. Izabela and her team to stock more brands and offer customers a wider range of services, including an on-site personalisation service. So what are the key items she would recommend? “In terms of practicality - and from a mother’s point of view - I would say you can never have too many front-fastening super soft prima cotton babygros, hats and cosy receiving blankets which they can use to swaddle little ones or simply to cover up,” she says. “I would add a few essentials from aden + anais such as their oversized muslins and a few muslin squares - l love all of their prints!” When Kate and Carole, popped into Blue Almonds they picked up a Moses basket November / December 2017

amongst other things, and Izabela thinks it’s a great starting point. “I would definitely suggest a Moses basket. It is often a baby’s first bed, and the fact that it is so small, makes the baby feel safe and warm. It can be placed next to mum’s side of the bed for the night time feeding shifts,” she explains. “Also on my list is a Maxi Cosy car seat cover. It is extra padded and entirely covers the car seat, so it is incredibly comfortable for the baby. As it is detachable, it can also be machine washed which means you don’t need to wash the whole car seat and is very hygienic. An added bonus is that at Blue Almonds, we can embroider the baby’s name on it to make it extra special.” Izabela is always on the look-out for new brands and sources from all over the world. “I’m really excited about some of the recent additions. Kissy Kissy is a new brand for us. In my opinion, it is one of the highest quality layette brands on the market. We are also stocking Belgian kidswear brand

the way, she does have some ideas for the Duchess of Cambridge should she pop in. “As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge already have a boy and a girl, the third Royal baby will have everything he/she needs, but I’m sure the couple will not just be handing down everything from George and Charlotte,” she says. “If I were to recommend some items, it would definitely be some pieces from the stunning Kissy Kissy layette collection and some cosy cashmere by Madeline Thompson. Both brands have designed exclusive collections for Blue Almonds which also come in beautiful grey versions if they decide not to find out the baby’s gender in advance.” But whether you know what colour you need to buy or not, Izabela believes that a concierge service can help you achieve the perfect nursery, espcially if you are very busy and struggle to find the time to do the research yourself. "Our concierge service involves a consultation to establish all the items they may need ahead of the birth and then we deliver all the items at one time to ensure the process is as straight forward and seamless as possible," says Izabela. So popular is the service that she is expanding to include another similar offering. "We will also be shortly launching a sister concierge service which is aimed more at gift givers such as friends and family. We have found that a large proportion of our customers aren’t actually buying for their own children and are coming to us for great gift ideas." Indeed Blue Almonds is going from strength to strength, helping parents-to-be untangle the seemingly endless list of items needed for a new baby.

"We are growing our e-commerce business which is an important next step for us, particularly as we have an increasing amount of customers worldwide. We still have a long way to go but I envisage the future growth of Blue Almonds being driven by our website. "I want to extend our range ofbranded products. I would probably start out with fabrics and wallpaper. "I would also look to continue to extend the range of services we offer our customers, which would include new ways to make their lives easier and make the overall shopping more fun and experience-oriented rather than just about buying products," she says. TIME Hitting the slopes with kids doesn’t need to be tricky. Here Mama editor Morag Turner skier and mum-of-three - explains how to make it a hassle-free holiday.
L
et’s be honest, any holiday with children can be a bit of a faff. The effort that it takes to pack for everyone, navigate the airport and actually get you all to your hotel room takes military precision and serious stamina at the best of times, but no holiday is trickier to manage than one on the slopes. Ask any mother who is a seasoned skier and she’ll tell you it would be easier to take your toddlers trekking in the Amazon than to the Alps for a long weekend. Firstly, where’s the best place to go and when? And then there’s the kit to contend with - the copious amounts of warm (bulky) clothes that weigh a tonne and require ten suitcases to transport. Next the jigsaw puzzle of childcare and, of course, the actually skiing - what’s the best way for your little one to learn but stay safe? But it doesn’t have to been this hard. By choosing the right resort and booking with experts who can guide you through the process, making sure all the bases are covered, you can make skiing with kids just as easy as any sunny ‘fly and flop’ holiday. “There is no reason why you can’t ski with kids and have great, relaxing trip,” says Kirsty Edwards, Ski Manager at Scott Dunn. “You can and you should - it’s one of the best holidays a family can have together.” According to Edwards the key to making the most of your time on your slopes is careful forward planning. “Do your research or ask your travel company to advise you and come up with suggestions."

“A QUICK FLIGHT AND A SHORT TRANSFER ARE KEY TO THE SUCCE S S OF A SKIING HOLIDAY”

Which resort?
SKIING FOR THE FIRST TIME CAN BE SO MUCH FUN
A quick flight and a short transfer are key to the success of a skiing holiday. No one wants to spend hours on a plane followed by even longer on a coach twisting through mountains - especially not with little kids in tow. So put those thoughts of Whistler or Aspen on hold until your children are old enough to watch inflight movies and can handle the time difference. For parents of under-fives skiing is all about European destinations. Easyjet and British Airways have daily flights from Gatwick to Geneva - only one hour 30 mins flight away and Innsbruck and Zurich are just half an hour more. Once you reach the airport you ideally want a transfer that is no longer than one hour 30 minutes. From Geneva you can reach Morzine, Les Gets and Courchevel in this time. All are great family friendly resorts that have a good selection of runs including plenty of greens and cruisy blues for when your little ski bunnies tentatively venture out onto the slopes for the first time. Likewise Obergurgl and Alpbach in Austria, both only a short journey from Innsbruck, and Saas-Fee and WenNovember / December 2017

gen close to Zurich, offer the same family friendly skiing. Other things to consider when choosing a resort are accessibility to shopping and childfriendly restaurants.
When to go?
The first thing to say about timing is avoid the school holidays if you possibly can. The hotel and flight prices will be inflated due to high demand, the slopes will be packed (with way too many fearless/crazy teenagers) and the babysitter’s diaries choc-a-block. And be aware that it’s not just the British school holidays you are trying to dodge. European schools all have their equivalent half term weeks too. Your tour operator can tell you when these are. If they can’t then the prices alone should be a good indication. Pick a quieter stretch closer to the end of the season in March when, even though the snow might be less predictable in some resorts, it should be a few degrees warmer than the beginning of January, when biting winds and freezing temperatures could really put your shivering little skiers off heading outside. It’s inevitable that they will get cold and wet, and loose gloves/scarves/snoods, but you want to minimise the freeze factor or you’ll find yourself with a crying child who refuses to put their skis back on.
Hotel or chalet?
Both can cater for families brilliantly. While hotels offer more facilities such as swimming pools and restaurants, the traditional, cosy feel of a chalet, especially a small one,

can really add to your holiday, plus you’ll meet other families which can be fun and sociable. Self catering is always an option, but, just as with any holiday, it adds to the to-do list. Instead why not book a catered chalet and enjoy the amazing breakfasts and dinners, as well as afternoon tea when you kick your ski boots off for the day. For the ultimate ski accommodation, opt for a private chalet, many of which come with a chef, nanny and perks such as a hot tub. “A big consideration is proximity to the slopes,” points out Paola Fiochhi Van Den

RELAX IN A HOT TUB AT L’APOGÉE IN COURCHEVEL
Brande owner of Passepartout Homes who run luxury chalets all over Europe. “The closer the better really. Children don’t like walking far carrying their skis, helmet and all the other kit they need, especially if they are cold and wet, so you don’t want to make them walk too far at the end of the day. Ski in ski out is great because it’s so easy but a private shuttle or at the very least a bus service close by, can help you get to and from the lifts,” she explains. However, the downside of ski in ski out chalets is that, by their nature, they tend to be more remote. While this is lovely, it makes these chalets tricky to get to with children who can’t ski. And what happens if you suddenly need a trip to the pharmacy to pick up some Calpol? That isn’t going to be possible when the lifts are closed.

and little ones under three can spend time in a kids club, often including time outside playing in the snow. All good ski holiday operators will offer hotels with kids clubs. For total flexibility, however, a private nanny is the best option. They can arrive at your chalet first thing, follow whatever routine works for your child and even bring your little one to meet you for lunch on the slopes, as many restaurants in resorts can be reached by lift alone with no skiing involved. Parents can then head back down the mountain with their children or squeeze in a few more afternoon runs, letting the nanny take them back to the chalet. All ski resorts will have a selection of nanny agencies working locally. Many of these girls will speak fluent English. Ask to see references and qualifications to give yourself peace of mind. Also let's not forget about après ski? Yes, you have kids, but you also want at least one opportunity to dance to questionable European pop while still in your ski boots. Ask the nanny to put them to bed that night and maybe help with breakfast the following morning.
Within reason, the younger the better when it comes to ski lessons. Who hasn’t been made to feel like a really rubbish skier when a zippy little five year old whizzes past them? Well that child could easily be yours if you get them into the sport early. All resorts have ski schools. Some will be attached to the tour operators or hotels, while others will be local, but all will have English-speaking instructors and be happy will to take children as young as three for up to two hours in a group of four or five, getting them used to wearing skis and falling over, er we mean, skiing. You will be truly amazed (and slightly jealous about) how quickly they progress. Children of that age have no fear and much more flexibility so when they do fall (which they will - a lot) they don’t seem to care and it rarely hurts. But if you do have a child who is unsure, don’t force it too much. If taken often enough, they will come round to skiing eventually, but you don’t want to put them off. Build some snowmen instead and get them used to rolling about in the powder. As well as ski schools you have the option of private instructors who can take the kids to the nursery slopes. They can be booked through the ski school and, while a more pricey option, one to one tuition will undoubtedly bring your child’s skiing on far quicker. This option is great if you are going away with another family and have for two or three children who can share lessons. Instructors are flexible and can work around your own timings and location more. But if a two hour slot isn't enough when you’d planned on lunch in that perfect little Alpine spot, then that’s when good childcare mentioned earlier really comes into its own. If you have a private nanny she can collect your children and take them back to the chalet to wait for you. The final point to make is book early. Seasoned skiiers know all about the points we've mentioned here and will book up to a year in advance. So get cracking and come the season, you'll be hitting the slopes with ease. A As part of your routine antenatal care you will be given the option to test for a number of chromosomal abnormalities (Downs, Edwards, Patau syndrome). Outside of the NHS offering you may wish to avail off the non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) which analyses your baby’s DNA which is present in your blood stream whilst pregnant. Traditional screening tests can miss as many as 15% of chromosomal abnormalities whereas NIPT testing will detect 99%. Currently NIPT is not available on the NHS. The results you will receive are a more accurate risk predictor than traditional tests offered such as combined screening. It reduces the risk of invasive procedures, which may have a higher miscarriage rate. A high risk result does not necessarily mean that you baby will be affected; it will be an indicator for further invasive testing such as chorionic villi sampling or amniocentesis. The NIPT can be performed from 10 weeks gestation and consists of a simple blood test.

Once essential checks have been made, ask for the noise levels and lights to be kept low, giving you and your baby time to rest and get to know each other. Ensure you are both warm enough and comfortable by wearing something that supports
baby on your chest and covers your body to maintain your own temperature. Baby’s heart rate, body temperature and respiration will usually stabilise during skin to skin contact, easing their transition from the womb to the world. Being held against mum’s skin can help baby’s immune system, reducing the risk of infection. Requesting skin to skin contact as part of your birth plan, and packing a comfortable and supportive kangaroo care top or wrap, will help you enjoy this simple but powerful way of welcoming your baby into the world. Births don’t always go to plan but skin to skin contact has many benefits even when it cannot happen straightaway. Choosing what to wear for skin to skin contact doesn’t have to be expensive. There are comfortable options, such as the Bandeau from Vija Design which starts from just £17.99.

BABYMOONING
We asked Marie Louise, founder of Marie Louise Maternity to share her top tips for traveling before your little one arrives. Also, find out how you can go on your own dream babymoon. Babymoon breaks have recently become very popular and rightly so. You, your body and your partner are about to experience one of life’s biggest changes, especially if you are expecting your fi rst baby. Your whole body has changed and is continuing to change. Your blood volume will increase by 50%, your internal organs move and your lungs change shape; not to mention the added hormonal changes you are experiencing. You need to take time out away from everything and enjoy quality time with your bump and whoever you plan to take to your birth, be it your partner, friend, mum or doula. There is so much to consider during pregnancy and I’m a fi rm believer in taking time out to think through, appreciate and consider what’s to come. Breaks are most popular during the second trimester as you should have plenty of time before your baby is born. The time spent away from work and other commitments is important during pregnancy, not just on maternity leave. It doesn’t matter where you go, it matters that you take this time for yourself and your baby. Consult your GP or midwife and the airline to discuss safety of travelling; most airlines will allow you fly up to 28 weeks. Ensure you keep well hydrated on the fl ight and wear fl ight stockings to prevent blood clots. Walk up and down the plane and move your ankles around in circles to help circulation. You might want to pre-book an aisle seat, in order to be able to get in and out of your seat to do this and to use the bathroom. One of the most important things for you to pack is any medication you need and your hospital notes, whether your trip is abroad or in the UK - it’s essential that you bring them. If you do need to seek medical advice whilst away from home - the fi rst thing a midwife/Dr will want to do is check your history and ensure they don’t miss anything during diagnosis but without those notes they can’t get the history required. MLM is currently running an exclusive babymoon giveaway with one of the U.K’s most beautiful and atmospheric hotels. It’s only available to six women. if this is something you would be interested in, contact the Scarlet Hotel as soon as possible to secure your place. scarlethotel.co.uk/babymoon-giveaway November / December 2017

Can nappy rash be prevented?
A No matter how careful you are, most babies are likely to get nappy rash at some time. Nappy rash is usually mild and can be managed with a good skincare routine and a barrier ointment. Taking care of your baby’s delicate skin is essential in both treating and preventing nappy rash. Following these simple steps will help: • Lie your baby on a towel and leave your baby’s nappy off as often as you can, to let fresh air get to the skin. • Change wet or soiled nappies as
Camilla LAWRENCE Lead Women’s Health Physio at SIX Physio advises on getting back to exercise safely after having your baby:
• First 6-8 weeks: Focus on gradually getting back to walking. Start small with 5-10minute strolls and slowly increase the distance over a few weeks. Get going on your pelvic floor (Kegal) exercises; try doing them every time you feed your baby. See a Women’s Health physio if you are struggling with these or any incontinence or prolapse symptoms. 116

soon as possible. • Clean the nappy area thoroughly using plain water or alcohol and fragrance free wipes. • Don’t use talcum powder as it contains ingredients that could irritate your baby’s skin. • Try to bath your baby every day, but don’t use soap or bubble bath. • Gently pat rather than rub your baby’s bottom dry and avoid vigorous rubbing. • Use a suitable barrier ointment at each nappy change. Most mild cases of nappy rash can be easily treated with an ointment from your pharmacy and following this skincare routine, but if you are worried always seek the advice of a healthcare professional.
“TAKING CARE OF YOUR BABY'S DELICATE SKIN IS ESSENTIAL IN BOTH TREATING AND PREVENTING."
• 6-12 weeks: After your 6 week check with your Dr, start working on rebuilding your core strength with a specialised personal trainer or post-natal Pilates or Yoga Class. You can also start to increase your cardiovascular exercise but keep it low-impact still at this stage (e.g. fast walking, swimming, cycling, crosstrainer). • 12 weeks+: Continue building on your core strength and conditioning work and if you are pain free with no pelvic floor problems, you can start returning to impact exercise again (jogging, aerobics, tennis, netball etc). Get a full Postnatal Body Check by an expert Women’s Health Physio from 6 weeks post partum. Th is includes a detailed assessment of your posture, back, pelvis, pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, identifying any problem areas and how to fi x them, and giving you a safe and individualised exercise regime.

A As soon as your baby is born, you can support your child’s future cognitive and emotional development through abundant skin-to-skin contact and consistent emotional attention. There is plentiful scientific research to show that physical contact between a mother and a baby leads to improved emotional and social behaviour at later stages of a child’s life. Helen GARDINER Helen Gardiner is an experienced nutritionist who works with one of the UK's most popular baby food brands, Hipp. hipp.co.uk Q When is best to introduce lumpy food when weaning? A Learning to chew is an important stage in your baby’s development, helping with the correct muscle development and use of the tongue needed for speech, and of course is also a vital step in them adapting to familystyle meals. There is a critical period in the second half of infancy during which babies more readily accept new tastes and textures. It can be tricky at fi rst, but it's important to persevere

stabilises the heart rate (i.e. makes the baby calmer) and improves quality of sleep, which impacts baby’s brain development and hormone levels. Just keep hugging and kissing your little one! Exposing your baby to your own language through talking, singing and reading is very important. One study showed that babies’ abilities to discriminate phonemes at 7 months is a predictor of the child’s reading skills at the age of five. Reading to pre-nursery children activates specific brain areas supporting semantic processing which is the key for oral language development and later reading skills. The other important opportunity to boost your baby’s development is to expose him/her to a variety of languages in a face-to-face environment. Studies show that the ability to acquire language skills dramatically declines after the age of seven. At 3 House Club we offer Mandarin and other language playgroups with native speakers as well as various live music rhyme singing classes to help you to support your child’s development.
with lumpier foods from around 6-7 months of age. Research has shown that babies not given lumps until after 9 months are more likely to be difficult, picky eaters. These problems are still evident at 15 months and even at 7 years of age. If you’re preparing your own baby foods, adjust the consistency according to what your baby can cope with, aiming for more and more lumps and a coarser texture as you go. Start by mashing soft fruits, cooked vegetables or cooked pasta, perhaps with some mashed fish or pureed meat. If you are using ready-made baby foods, switch from Stage 1 to Stage 2 foods that are specially designed for this next phase of feeding. Don’t be surprised if your baby spits out lumps to begin with this is normal. Just leave it for a few days and then have another go. They will get there in the end! Of course, there is always the possibility of choking, however, so never leave your baby on their own whilst they are eating. November / December 2017

ow many children dressed in extraordinary costumes have dreamed the dream and fought mythical monsters in mysterious worlds? Exciting stuff, and why would you want to dissuade or distract children from such creative imagining? The impossible or miraculous to adults is an every day occurrence for children with imagination. Children thrive on discovery and curiosity. Everyday I see nursery children being children playing, dressing up and role playing imaginary characters, enjoying telephones that do not work in made up conversations with unseen others. At this

stage should we worry about "stranger danger" or celebrate their innocent creativity which often apes adults at our expense? They are not embarrassed in a way we as adults might be. In their imagination they develop language and empathy therefore a depth of skill in communication which should be a lifelong benefit. Children take risks because they are unafraid of or do not even understand the meaning of "failure". How rapidly do we unnecessarily make them aware of "danger" rather than sharing in their risk-taking? Is not success based on hard work an element of genius or insight, but also copious amounts of risk taking, putting it out there for others to take exception but potentially to share, celebrate and take forward? I have

wonderful teachers who ask challenges of children they know they cannot do and yet this only increases the excitement and ambition of the children to be imaginative and creative in proving their teacher wrong. Trees are to be climbed, rivers and streams to be crossed! Whilst our children will not be climbing Everest anytime soon, they do experience risk taking in the relative safety of problem solving creative writing, the physical and personal challenge of outward bound adventure, and in developing computer programmes to be exposed to user-trials of younger children. The very sharp end of their experience is 11+ and entrance to their next schools and interviewers have sometimes posed the question "If you were to invent something what would it be?" Now there's a fun challenge. Are we not surrounded by every day utilities that are the product of someone's incredible imagination, practical know how and determination to turn dreams into reality? Our children are successful because we have ambition for them and, more importantly, we support their ambition for themselves. Each child a person to be cherished, nurtured and challenged. The presence of dreams and aspirations impacts their lives as adults which may turn out to be far more fun, substantially less limited and potentially incredibly fulfi lling. Therefore for us, dreaming is neither redundant nor a distraction but a reality and necessity. whitehouseschool.com

’ve a baby on the way. I should point out that my wife, Helen, is also quite heavily involved. Here’s the thing everyone keeps telling us: “Catch up on sleep now”. What they don’t say is: “Good luck with actually doing that because until that baby arrives your sleep will be full of anxiety dreams. You’ll be waking up at 3am realising quite how powerless you are in what’s about to happen, wondering how to pay for everything, what names to suggest and whether you should start going to the gym as you have arms that look like twigs and you’re worried you might not actually be able to pick the baby up.” Okay, that last one is quite specific to me. Oh, and you’ll wake up every time your wife goes to the toilet. So every 20 minutes then. Brilliant. As our baby goes from a medium rare to well done, everything has started to get pretty real, which is odd for for me, a mind-reading magician who spends his life trying to make the impossible possible.

We’ve gone from reading books (well Helen’s gone from reading books and telling me ‘you should read this book’) to the actual purchasing of products, packing of baby bags and rehearsing of what’s going to happen when our little one decides to put on its own Houdini-esq escape. Turns out live streaming it on YouTube so I can show my mind-reading talents by predicting the sex isn’t a goer. Also I already know the sex, thanks to the magic of ultrasound. So, with this huge life change on the horizon, it’s a good job that all we have to focus on at the moment is awaiting the arrival of our little one. But wait. What’s that? Oh yeah, we thought it’d be a great idea to move house at the exact same time. Nothing like additional stress to make the impending birth of your fi rst baby feel even more fun. Yay. We are juggling dates to move in with dates when we think the baby might arrive. And working out where the birth might happen alongside the colour schemes for living room. And since we’re considering a home birth, the white carpet is currently on hold. We’re working together on everything as much as possible, taking individual jobs before reporting back our fi ndings. While Helen works on our birthing plan, I'm cracking on with researching and buying. First up was the pram, searching for something that made us look cool pushing it, while being easy enough to fit in the car.
The initial ‘you could literally get a second hand car for the price of one of these’ thought zoomed out of my mind as it was fi lled with questions like: 'will the storage under it be enough?' and 'in the future can the baby sit at table height in the pram and join us for dinner when we’re out, thus giving a whole new meaning to meals on wheels?'. The minefield was avoided when I picked out the Day 2 from Joolz, even more so when Helen got to tailor make every part of it on their website. I followed it up with a double whammy: matching baby and parents' mattresses. Well, at least that’s what I told Helen, bringing a tear to her eye for what a thoughtful dad-to-be I was. It just so happened that I was getting us a new Eve mattress and I saw that they’d just released ‘the world’s most comfortable baby mattress’, and if we’re going to feel like we’re sleeping on a cloud, so should our little one. The fact that both were delivered in boxes direct to our house was an additional bonus – my twig arms were not looking forward to heaving a mattress around town. I thought I’d got the hang of this getting ready for a baby lark, but, as Helen’s apps told us, the baby was now the size of a coconut and our list of ‘things to do before for the baby arrives’ was now requiring an app of its own to monitor its growing size. Luckily that list lives on my side of the bed, so when 3am strikes I can add to it, while looking longingly at the fi rst item on the list: ‘Catch up on sleep’. One can dream, right? Well, one can’t, one’s too busy making a list.
