’ve more experience in designing layouts for magazines than I have writing for them, but after 26 years of being a graphic designer, 17 of those running my own business working with Hertfordshire clients, I decided to take the leap last year and go full time at our other business, Puddingstone Distillery. My first design job was in Berkhamsted. Back then Waitrose was on the High Street, I can recall three clothes shops, a handful of banks, but definitely no coffee shops! Now look at how it’s transformed into a bustling high street. The same was true of Tring when we first moved here. There’s always a new, but possibly very old business to be found in what at first seems to be a little market town. Vibrancy and diversity are one of the reasons why we wanted to locate our distillery in the town where we live. We might be on the very edge of the Hertfordshire borders, but the importance of Tring with the Natural History Museum, canal, reservoirs and the beauty of Tring Park means it’s a real asset to the county. When we launched the distillery people really embraced our vision and the support we’ve seen over the last five years has been amazing. From local restaurants such as Crockers, The Akeman and Storia to the Rex and Odyssey Cinemas all championing our Campfire Gin range, we’ve been able to build a following of gin lovers who regularly visit the distillery shop, attend our tours and join our cocktail demo afternoons. Myself and Ben both grew up in Watford and it’s been a real delight to see our gins on the back bars at The Grove and Watford Palace Theatre. The excitement is we just never know where it’s going to take us next, except we do know we have to defend our World’s Best Martini title at some point this year!

CULTURE • EVENT THE MAIN STAGE
A We have so much amazing local talent in Hertfordshire and we think it’s so important to give these artists a platform to perform on, especially after the last couple of years. We also try and support and use local suppliers for all elements of the festival as much as possible. Q Tell us about your charity partner… A This year we’re delighted to be supporting
The East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity. We’ll be helping them raise funds to create a ‘SafeSpace’ for children and young people who arrive at The Lister due to their mental health.
Eccentric EXCITEMENT After covering the return of Todd in the Hole last issue, we catch up with festival cofounder David Nye to discover more
Q What originally inspired Todd in the Hole? A I’ve worked in the catering side of festivals for over 15 years and Mark Watts, the other co-founder of Todd, had always wanted to host a festival on his land. He’s a good friend and after working with him on his birthday celebrations a few years ago we had a ‘Eureka’ moment and decided to join forces to create Todd in the Hole. We both love music, a good time and promoting Hertfordshire! Q Why was Todds Green the ideal location? A We both grew up in Todds Green. Mark’s a farmer and owns land around the village, so it was a no-brainer, plus the site is in a beautiful setting inbetween Hitchin and Stevenage.
Q What would you say makes you stand out from other festivals? A Our diverse music offers something for everyone. We like to add a bit of British eccentricity into our festival with tug of war competitions, disco yoga, chilli eating and a Great British Elvis Off!
Q What are the highlights of this year’s line up? A Too many to mention! All of our stages are jam-packed with brilliant music all weekend. Although as the 80s is my favourite music genre I am looking forward to Martin Kemp closing our Main Stage on Sunday with his 80s DJ set. Q What camping facilities do you offer? A As a boutique festival it’s important
that we offer our campers the best possible experience. So we provide hot showers, posh loos and an excellent coffee truck in our campsite. For those that want a truly luxurious experience we still have a few glamping tents left.
DAVID NYE AND MARK WATTS
Q How do you make it family friendly? A We have a fantastic Kids Arena jam
packed with shows and activities all weekend. We offer a designated area for family camping in our campsite, and our giant sandpit in our Main Festival Arena will also be back by popular demand. Q It’s a real community event too – why do you want to offer a stage to the area’s new talent?
Todd in the Hole festival will be held from 15-17 July – find out more at toddinthehole.co.uk

JOURNEY through WORDS
Hertfordshire author Connie Glynn on her voyage of selfdiscovery, finding peace with her YouTube past and representing the LGBTQIA+ community in her novels B y N ATA L I E L I
C
onnie Glynn has come a long way. Author, voiceover artist, YouTuber, musician – it’s been quite a career and she is only 28. It’s five years since Glynn released her debut novel, Undercover Princess, the first book in The Rosewood Chronicles. Her path into publishing landed after Glynn found fame as a YouTuber through her channel Noodlerella. After five years documenting her life to more than 900,000 subscribers it was time for a new chapter. Today, she is feeling true to herself and happier than she has ever been. It’s been a journey, she admits. “I have always been realistic and logical, but I have always loved providing escapism for other people, worlds that can take them away from their own problems. I didn’t have a traditional publishing experience. There was a sweet spot in the life of YouTube where lots of
publishers wanted to do YouTube book deals. I was approached to do a story of my life, but that’s not what I wanted. I eventually signed with Penguin, they had an amazing vision and were interested about my school life and how magical it was to me.” Glynn’s school life began at St Christopher’s School in Letchworth Garden City, where she joined at the age of six after attending Datchworth Pre-school in Knebworth. “I loved school and I had the most incredible time. There were so many green areas and that’s such an important thing in childhood. I have wonderful memories of walking from school into Letchworth town along these tree-lined streets and it felt like it was going on forever,” Glynn enthuses. “We did classes outdoors and I remember playing in big grassy areas, lovely mounds where we’d play Romans and Celts. The boarding school was a very old building, and you could push back bits of walls, it was like something out of a novel. These feature in my books.” Glynn later studied film at Sussex University. Not feeling content with the
university experience, she often returned to her family home in Hertfordshire. It was during her time at university that Glynn started her hugely successful YouTube channel Noodlerella (named after her favourite food and Disney princess). “When I started the channel, it was during a time when it was not a thing to share your life and there wasn’t a sense of ‘let’s make money from it’,” says Glynn. “We [fellow YouTubers] were lonely and built this online community, suddenly people were throwing money at us so it was hard to process,” reflects Glynn, who voiced the role of Moxie Dewdrop in the UK edition of the 2016 DreamWorks film Trolls. “It can be an intrusive experience as people have access to you. I had a moment when I realised I couldn’t do it anymore and that was a difficult time. It wasn’t fulfilling. I never wanted to be a YouTuber, it all happened by accident. I wanted to make stories and create, and YouTube was one way for me to express myself. Leaving YouTube felt like I was divorcing A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

someone, this personality and career, and it’s only recently I have made my peace with it all,” she continues. “People set up their channels with the intention of becoming rich and famous. It seems weird to me that people want this thing I have spent the last few years trying to distance myself from.” In 2017, Glynn leapt at the opportunity to move from YouTube to publishing when she released her first young adult novel. The magical plot follows the adventures of Lottie Pumpkin, an ordinary girl who’s always wanted to be a princess, and Ellie Wolfe, a princess who’s always wanted to be an ordinary girl. “Stories were important to me growing up; mum read a lot to us as children, but she also encouraged me to write my own stories, which we did together,” adds Glynn. As part of the LGBTQIA+ community, Glynn wanted to reflect the importance of identity and represent this in her Rosewood Chronicles series. “I think it’s impossible not to bring my experience to my books; they’re about finding the people who bring out the best in you, but they might not be the people you expect them to be. “I wanted to represent my own friendship groups. I am a lesbian, and my life is full of amazing people who reflect my community, so I re-read the books I grew up with and it didn’t reflect my life as a young gay person. Some characters are loosely based on people I knew growing up. “I wanted to show people that these communities are out there. I knew from a young age that I was interested in girls, but it took me a long time to realise I was a lesbian, so I had this pansexual identity for a long time,” adds Glynn. “I am doing a favour to my younger self by getting these books out to young people who might need it.” Glynn has been overwhelmed by the
18
response from young people on their own path of self-discovery. “It has been positive and overwhelming; some messages have brought me to tears. I see my younger self in these readers. The parents are also lovely and it’s great seeing a shift – so many parents who are willing and happy for their children to discover their identity.” The fifth and final instalment of The Rosewood Chronicles, Princess Ever After, was released in February and Glynn describes her nervousness around the readers’ response. “I was worried that people would feel dissatisfied and unhappy, but the response has been heart-warming and moving. It feels like a huge cathartic experience for me and hopefully it’s the same for readers.” As for the future, what’s in store for the former YouTuber? “At the moment I’m making music [with cult rock trio Snaggletooth]; my creative endeavours have been a way of dealing with negative emotions and I approach severe emotions with something to be dealt with. Music is a great way to explore that stuff. “I am in the process of selling another book series, which features royal intrigue and LGBTQIA+ themes. I also want to explore darker themes in my next books as I love writing for the pre-teen and teen market, and I do have an idea of writing an adult horror fiction. Who knows – a romantic novel could be on the way. I love the yearning, pining and Austenian style and I’d love to explore anything that subverts people’s expectations and challenges them – I find that exciting.” Follow Connie Glynn on Instagram @connieglynn

Q Why were you keen to take over as Director of Golf at Centurion Club? A Having worked abroad for several years, the opportunity to join the team as Director of Golf at Centurion Club, and to return to my home county, came at an ideal time in my career. Q What does your job entail? A There are several aspects to the role
as Director of Golf including enhancing the member and guest experience, developing a member’s tournament calendar, running the golf operations team and overall upkeep of the golf facility. Q How would you describe the course? A The course comprises both treelined

and open landscaped holes. There are gorse bushes, strategically placed bunkers and water features making it both rewarding and challenging. The greens play fast with plenty of surrounding slopes and features, so it’s enjoyable for seasoned pros and amateurs alike.
Q What are the benefits of someone being a member at the club? A As a member, you’re invited to treat the club like your home from home – a place to play golf, socialise, network and bring the family. There are opportunities to play at Clubs around the world through our reciprocal agreements with the likes of Monte Rei, Portugal; Taiheiyo Club, Japan; Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong; and Els Club, Dubai. On a day-to-day basis the golf course is professionally maintained with excellent playing surfaces, attentive service in golf operations, the Clubhouse and Restaurant.

A VIEW OF THE CLUBHOUSE
“I always felt fortunate to learn to play golf in Hertfordshire” Q Do you have some star names who play at Centurion Club? A We do from time-to-time welcome icons from the world of sport and entertainment. Q What else do you think makes the club stand out? A The fact that we have stayed true to our original aim, which was to blend the rich history and traditions of golf with a modern, creative and progressive edge, to create a relaxed and welcoming club with no stuffy rules and regulations. This approach transcends the whole of the Club, from the golf team who greet you in the Pro Shop to the team in the Clubhouse and Restaurant.
Q Where do you live? A Hertfordshire is my home county:
where I was born, educated, and played golf as a child and I now live a short drive away from Centurion Club. I always felt fortunate to learn to play golf in Hertfordshire where there are so many excellent courses within close reach. I really love the area, the amount of green space and the proximity to London. Q Centurion Club aside, what
other places in and around St Albans do you love to visit? A I have only just moved back to the area, so am familiarising myself with the many local

country and town pubs in the area. What is great, is that there is so much choice. I love to get out into the fresh air, so am a big fan of Heartwood Forest, north of St Albans, and will be looking to explore as many local areas as possible when I can. Q What can we look forward to at Centurion Club over the coming months? A In terms of golf, in June this year we will host two professional tournaments. The LIV Golf Invitational, a men’s event that takes place from 9-11 June and the Aramco Team Series, a Ladies European Tour event from 16-18 June. In the restaurant, Head Chef Calvin Hill and his team are developing new seasonal menus and, with the warmer weather, we will be making the most of our beautiful terraces where guests can enjoy the views across the lake to the 18th green with a glass of wine.

The concept is simple, but the impact your fundraising will have could be huge. Anyone who signs up to host a Play Date will receive a fundraising pack complete with stickers and print-at-home bunting, posters and invitations. Also in the pack will be a collection box and a QR code to direct guests to the host’s fundraising page. And if that’s not enough, there’ll be plenty of game ideas available on the GOSH Charity Play Date website. Each donation will help fund GOSH’s dedicated Play team who help children make sense of their treatment and recovery through games and other activities. Play is a vital part of a patient’s hospital stay and ensures they feel in control, calm and informed every step of the way. It simply allows children to be children during what can be a difficult and worrying time.
ELEANOR AND THE PLAY TEAM Eleanor, now seven, was admitted to GOSH at three-years-old and was diagnosed with hyperinsulinism, a rare condition where the body produces too much insulin. She knows first-hand how much the Play team, funded by GOSH Charity, support children during difficult times. Eleanor says: “I like the Play team because they set up lots of fun things
for me to colour in and make. I’ve made a t-shirt for my brother, I’ve done cupcakes, I’ve done lots of crafts and I’ve made a lion head to scare the nurses with! The Play team helped me feel better about my treatment because they made it really fun.” Eleanor’s mum, Rebecca, adds: “The Play team are an essential part of our visits to GOSH. Eleanor’s first question about any upcoming visit is when she’ll get to see the Play team. They bring fun, laughter, distraction and support to Eleanor and our family. “The wonderful doctors and nurses work to better the treatment of Eleanor’s illness. The Play team work to better Eleanor’s experience of being at GOSH and having to face the tests and treatments we hope will improve her quality of life.” G R E AT O R M O N D S T R E E T H O S P I TA L C H I L D R E N ' S C H A R I T Y Keen on being part of the action? Sign up to host your own Play Date at gosh.org/playdate Any donation(s) received in relation to the GOSH Charity Play Date event(s) will be used to fund the Play Services at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. The target for this appeal is to raise £101,250. In the event that additional donations are received over and above the target and/or the needs of the hospital or patients change, they reserve the right to redirect funds for use against the hospital’s most urgent needs.

TASTING NOTES
The latest launches and news from across Hertfordshire By MARK KEBBLE
By PUDDINGSTONE DISTILLERY
Ultrasonic Gin 50cl 41% ABV £35 Inspired by the flight of native bats, this bold gin uses a unique ultrasonic process and pot distillation to extract flavour and aroma from the botanicals. The light finish carries notes of apple and mint. £2 from every bottle sold goes to the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.
Campfire Cask Aged Gin 70cl 43% ABV £40 Forget any preconception about cask aged spirits. This is not smoky, it’s not woody, it’s simply delicious. Ten botanicals underpin a gin that draws its pale golden hue, soft fruity bourbon notes, hints of caramel and a lingering vanilla palate from the meticulously selected American Oak casks.
Campfire Navy Strength Gin 70cl 57% ABV £44 Launched to critical acclaim, the rich mouthfeel and sumptuous full-bodied flavour of this exceptionally smooth Navy Strength gin belies its higher strength. This is packed with juniper and excels in all applications, from a bold gin and tonic through to a classic gimlet cocktail. Anchors away.
The Campfire Gin range is distilled by founders and operators, Ben and Kate Marston, at the multi-award winning Puddingstone Distillery in Tring, Hertfordshire. Alongside the four strong Campfire Gin range the distillery also produces seasonal varieties and special editions in support of conservation and wildlife projects.

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL SETTING
Faithful FRIENDS
Bianca Rix, who runs The Fox & Hounds in Hunsdon with chef husband James, on lockdowns, loyalty and lobster By MARK KEBBLE
ENGLISH SHORT HORN RIB
Q What inspired you to launch your
own business back in 2004?
A We were looking to start a family, and
as we were living in London we wanted to move out and start our own business. James has always been a chef and we were ready to do our own thing. Q Why was the location perfect for you? A We spent a long time looking at different
locations – we looked as far afield as Bristol and various Essex villages. The Fox & Hounds was perfect for us though as it’s still close enough to London to dip in and out, and close to family and friends for support. There was also very little competition in the area. Q From day one, what did you want
to offer at The Fox & Hounds?
A We wanted to offer something a little
different to other pubs and restaurants.
Seasonal, inspiring, simple, good value and in a nice, relaxed environment. Q What have been key moments
for you in the years since?
A Developing a loyal customer base over
the years has been great – we have met so many people over the years and it has been lovely to host so many special occasions, such as weddings, special birthdays, family gatherings etc. Achieving our first Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2012 was one of our biggest achievements. It is a recognition by the Michelin Guide for establishments offering good food at reasonable prices in a nice environment, which is what we have always stood for. We have received this award every year since then – and often the only establishment in Hertfordshire, which is something to be proud of. Q How badly have you been
hit during the pandemic?
A The lead up to lockdown and the first
couple of weeks was pretty awful, and a scary time for all. We soon picked ourselves up though and started to think quickly about what we could do and how we could survive. Like lots of businesses we were hit hard – but we tried to make the most of some down time with our family, support the local community and take time to reflect on our business going forward. FOOD & DRINK • INTERVIEW
Q What were you able to do during
the various lockdowns?
A We supported the local community by
delivering free meals to the elderly and vulnerable in the village. We also started a little shop/deli on our terrace selling homemade meals, fresh bread, fruit and veg etc. Our offering grew weekly and word spread with ‘socially distanced’ chats going on while people were waiting. It became a highlight of the day for some people to get out and buy some essentials and see a friendly face. We did take away fish & chips on a Friday too, which was very popular. As lockdowns started to ease, but we were still unable to open, we started other take away options too such as Sunday lunch.
BIANCA AND JAMES RIX APRICOT & ALMOND TART
Q Now open again, why did you want to
offer coffee and pastries in the morning?
A As The Fox Shop on the terrace was
“We want to offer something a little different from the normal pub grub menu”
so popular, we decided to dedicate an area of the pub inside to be able to carry this on. It made sense to open earlier for coffee and pastries and the shop. Q Have you always had The Fox Shop? A No. The Fox Shop started
during lockdown and is now an integral part of our business.
Q What do you sell there? A We sell homemade meals such as pies,
curry, lasagne, and meatballs for people to enjoy at home. We sell fresh bread and pastries and lots of homemade treats such as cookies, brownies and cakes. We have a small selection of other local produce such as Tring Beer, seasonal fruit and veg, and Dawlicious ice cream. We also sell Brindisa Deli items such as olives, salami, cheese and crisps. We wanted to offer something a little different to our customers and it has
proven very popular. We have a steady flow of people throughout the day and evening – and most of our diners also pop in for a browse before they leave.
focus on meat and seafood.
Q What kind of dining experience
Q What kind of thing would
do you want to offer? A We want to offer a relaxed dining experience, with consistent standards and the opportunity to try something a little different from the normal ‘pub grub’ menu. IT’S A HUGELY POPULAR VENUE WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
Q Would you say you have a
particular cooking style?
A Modern European with a
we find on the menus now?
A Josper grilled scallops in the shell,
garlic butter and Monk’s beard. First of the English spring vegetables, Jersey Royals and seashore vegetables. English grass-fed beef. Cornish Day boat fish such as skate wing and John Dory. Q Anything new planned for summer? A We are looking forward to getting
Cornish native lobster back on the menu – something The Fox is well known for. We have a wonderful supplier in Porthleven who delivers direct to us. Q What are your hopes for
the rest of the year?
A We hope to continue to build our business
and continue to welcome back customers and attract new ones. We have lots of events coming up such as weddings and birthday celebrations, so we are looking forward to making these special for all. foxandhounds-hunsdon.co.uk

PRICELESS DECISION Baker Brothers Diamonds on how to pick the perfect wedding ring
Y
ou’ve now said “yes” to your future spouse (and the engagement ring) and it’s time to pick your wedding ring. An engagement ring may have all the fanfare, but your wedding band is the piece you'll probably spend the most time wearing. That's why it is important you find a ring that complements your engagement ring, your lifestyle and your changing tastes. If you are looking for inspiration, then the team at Baker Brothers in Bedford are here to help you. Baker Brothers makes the experience of selecting your perfect ring an exciting and unique experience. “We love to sit with our customers and talk them through every aspect of choosing their wedding ring,” says Lisa, one of Baker Brother's jewellery specialists. “We sit with our couples, give them a jeweller’s loupe and show them how to inspect the diamonds that are used in their wedding band. We chat about their lifestyle too, so we can ensure the ring is something they can wear comfortably every day.” The important things to consider when choosing your weddings bands are metal, shape, size and style. Traditional metal choices are yellow and white gold, but Baker Brothers are seeing a surge in platinum wedding band sales over the last year. “People want something durable and well-priced,” explains Baker Brothers director, Rebecca. Platinum is a naturally white metal that costs less than the traditional white or yellow gold. It is also one of the most durable metals, which means it doesn’t wear thin or distort in shape. Platinum is also hypoallergenic and has a lower price point than gold. Shape, size and style are personal choices, and not something to be decided on quickly, especially when it comes to a gentleman’s wedding band. Remember, most men have never worn a ring before and it can feel foreign. This is why Baker Brothers invite their couples to try them on. Playing with different widths, styles and profiles whilst sipping a glass of fizz creates a fun memory of your wedding journey. bakerbrothersdiamonds.com

MAKER Ware Priory is a historic
venue that can cater for all manner of weddings
W
are Priory is a picturesque Grade I listed building, founded in 1338, offering a variety of character rooms comprising historic features in a beautiful setting. Additionally, their Riverside Suite is the most recent addition to the estate, and features a large and contemporary space that can be decorated to style. Located on Ware High Street, Ware Priory is easily accessible for East Hertfordshire and West Essex. The views, which overlook the River Lea and the seven acres of landscaped gardens, transport you to a tranquil and romantic countryside setting, perfect for any wedding. Couples can hold their ceremony in one of the character rooms
such as Priory Hall, which is one of their most popular rooms. It can hold up to 100 people and features original stained-glass windows and French doors that open up to the picturesque gardens. Alternatively, their Riverside Suite, which is their contemporary facility, can hold up to 220 people for a ceremony and overlooks views of the River Lea from the front aspect, as well as views of their gardens from the side. With the seven acres of land, couples are spoilt for choice for wedding photography scenery. Within the grounds they also have an outdoor band stand, which has been famously used for after ceremony entertainment. Wedding receptions can be a formal sit-down meal, an informal buffet or perhaps a barbecue. They can accommodate a small gathering in an intimate setting or a large party of up to 140 of your guests. The Conservatory offers a bright spacious interior with an intimate atmosphere at night. The Priory Hall is a room full of historical character creating a unique atmosphere for your reception. Its stained glass windows and mid-Victorian murals provide a traditional theme and the beautiful French windows open on to the riverside gardens.
The contemporary Riverside Suite is situated within Fletcher's Lea. With its modern and spacious surroundings, it is an ideal larger venue for wedding ceremonies, receptions and celebration parties, and can accommodate up to 150 guests for dining and 220 guests for a buffet setting. Fletcher’s Lea is a standalone building that affords exclusivity as all catering and bar facilities are housed within it. Additionally, it has its own private terrace offering views of the River Lea as well as access to all the gardens within the Priory Estate. Ware Priory’s catering partnership with Gusto Catering, Premier Crew Hospitality, The Chef’s Table and The London Kitchen allows them to offer an extended range of menus and cuisines to guests, and a choice of caterer to suit their individual needs. Each partner brings with them a wealth of experience in event catering, a love of food, and exceptional service. They encourage couples to work with their recommended wedding decorator who specialises in transforming rooms into magical places, to create that perfect look that reflects couples’ dreams for their perfect wedding. warepriory.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

combination of different fabrics and patterns. While there may be a lot of lace detailing available, trendy wedding gown designs can still feel truly relaxed due to the less formal criss-cross fabric and natural feminine shape. Having said that, the range is very broad in its scope and depth – we believe we have something for all brides regardless of body shape or aspiration, from minimalism to super puffy dresses of the modern princess, from luxurious flowers to bows to puff sleeves and sexy cut-outs.

We meet the founder of Inna Voronova in St Albans to find out more about their innovative bridal wear Q What lead to your interest in bridal wear? A As a child, bright colours and fashion were always very high on the social agenda. As the high school proms drew closer every year, I would dream of arriving in a magnificent dress of my own creation. Later on as I grew older, thoughts turned to marriage and, of course, the dream of being the centre-piece of my own wedding. I used to draw and paint and eventually this passion turned to dress wear. Four years of professional training and a host of positions in bridal wear stores across Europe lead me to the inevitable conclusion that I must open my own store. Q How has it been going so far? A It has been a fantastic journey. My partner is dealing with all
Q What might customers not know about Inna Voronova Bridal but perhaps should know? A I think the most important is to understand that experience and talent counts for a lot. Body shape enormously impacts on what will and might not look fantastic – we can guide the bride closer to an image that will fulfil all their hopes and aspirations ensuring that above all else, they look truly amazing for their special day. We also have an extensive range of evening wear, prom dresses and bridesmaids’ dresses. Prices are very down to earth. Affordability is a key concept. We believe top quality should be available to everyone – not just a few. Finally, we welcome alterations requests – again prices are very reasonable and we are certain you will be delighted with the results.
the administrative and technical arrangements leaving me free to do what I do best: design / alter and produce beautiful dress creations. We have a very considerate personalised approach to our service and it warms my heart endlessly when the Cathedral bells ring out just as a prospective bride is fitting her dream dress. Tears of joy can well up in the bride’s eyes as they feel overwhelmed with the significance and symbolism of the moment – this makes everything worthwhile. Q What is special about your 2022 collections? A Our 2022 wedding dresses offer a more relaxed and bohemian style that are perfect for British-themed weddings. There has been a lot of hype with this style of wedding dress because of the unique

IS THE WORD Island Hop Your Way to Saying… I Do
W
hether you’re looking to plan your very own Mamma Mia! style wedding, simply want to escape a deux or celebrate with a small number of friends and family, look no further than the Greek Islands, scattered like gems across two clear seas. Each with their own vibe, views, charm, cuisine, jaw dropping sunsets and beaches… But where do you start trying to figure out where to go? Well, top tip: don’t just limit yourself to one island. Island hopping is taking off and is by far the best way to combine a dream wedding and honeymoon in one fell swoop, and there really is something for everyone – big, small, budget or blow-out. Numerous companies sell the Greek Island idyll, but very few are specialists in co-ordinating a wedding, honeymoon, island hop combo, but Olympic Holidays can provide just that. Whether it’s a religious, civil, symbolic or same-sex wedding, their dedicated team can coordinate the lot. Take Santorini for example, with its Instagram-worthy archetypal properties built into the cliffs,
instantly recognisable whitewashed facades, blue-domed churches and spectacular sunsets. It’s arguably one of the most romantic of all the Greek Islands and once the nuptials have taken place, is perfect to combine with an island hop over to Mykonos, Naxos or Paros. There’s also Rhodes, with its rich classical heritage and 300 days of sunshine a year, just a short hop from more intimate island gems such as Karpathos, Halki, Symi and Kos. These smaller islands provide the perfect escape for newlywed couples to start their lives together. If you dream of a barefoot wedding with sand between your toes, The Princess Andriana on Rhodes provides just that. Sunset weddings don’t come much better than at the Santorini Gem with magnificent views of the Santorini Caldera, a large volcanic crater off the island’s coast or the Amada Colossus on Rhodes, overlooking one of the finest beaches. For charming chapel weddings, there's Rhodes’ very own St Sophia, perched high on a hill or Aghia Fotini at the Pyrgos restaurant on Santorini. Or for a truly traditional affair, St Pauls Chapel or the Kalithea Spa in Rhodes with its beautiful gardens, mosaic and marble floors won’t disappoint.
THE LOWDOWN Olympic Holidays olympicholidays.com have an award-winning, dedicated wedding team to help you plan your big day. RHODES & KOS A 14-night wedding and honeymoon Island Hop package starts from £8,216 per couple including the wedding and 7 nights on an AI basis at Princess Andriana Resort & Spa and 7 nights at Ikos Aria on an AI basis. SANTORINI & MYKONOS A 15-night wedding and honeymoon Island Hop package starts from £8,910 per couple including the wedding at Santorini Gem, 8 nights at Cliff Side Suites on a B&B basis and 7 nights at the Myconian Ambassador Hotel & Thalassa Spa on a B&B basis. Set the SCENE Head to the Lake District for a wedding venue that has it all
S
torrs Hall is a beautiful and unique destination – arguably one of the most spectacular in the Lake District, if not the whole of the UK. It's rarer than you'd think to find such a strikingly elegant building, with private and peaceful lake frontage in the Lake District. Built in 1797 for a Yorkshire gentleman as an alternative to holidaying in the Swiss lakes, he chose the best location on Lake Windermere. The Grade II* listed building is wrapped in 17 acres of grounds, enjoying miles of views both north and south. His choice of location was equally appreciated by Tatler, who rated it one of the 101 Best Hotels in the World, 2022. The
Sunday Times listed it as one of the Top 80 British Hotels, 2021 – and it’s still working its magic. With three grand period rooms licenced for your ceremony, and three outside spaces, you’re spoilt for choice – whether it’s just the two of you, or with all your friends and family taking exclusive use. Newly licenced in 2022, the Boathouse Terrace is a unique ‘just for two’ venue, where the unusually large terrace with hot-tub, seating area, firepit and lily pond border the lake, with spectacular views north up Windermere to the central mountains. The luxuries of the Boathouse interiors match the location for your wedding night. Requiring a key code for its private grounds, and private parking, it really is something special and very exclusive. The Garden Pavilion, wrought in lacy ornate ironwork, is romantically pretty, and with the lake behind is a photogenic location for your vows. It’s also a top spot for sunset proposals. Newly licenced for ceremonies in 2022 is the South Lawn, between the hotel terraces and
the lakeshore, where woodland to either side ensures privacy. It’s overlooked by the restaurant, conservatory, and drawing room. Exclusive use maximum number of guests is 60-80, and you can speak to them about the possibility of a marquee on the south lawn. Storrs has a very characterful bar – The Tower Bar, reclaimed from Blackpool Tower itself, a piece of high Victoriana in rich wood and stained glass, it adds another dimension to your celebrations. Menus are devised totally to your tastes by their head chef and team. Storrs Hall is easily accessible, being 30 minutes from junction 36 of the M6, two miles south of Bowness on Windermere – home to Windermere Lake Cruises, who will provide a private lake tour directly from their jetty, for the entertainment of your guests. They also have extensive private parking, and eight VendElectric EV charging points, and helicopter landing is available on the south lawn. hread veins, red veins, spider veins: no matter what you call them, many of us suffer with broken, unwanted veins on our faces and legs. Whilst rarely harmful, and with varied causes, it’s encouraging to know that there’s no need to put up with them. Traditionally, treatment for thread veins has meant either solutions that don’t fit with our lifestyles – such as wearing compression stockings – or invasive procedures such as sclerotherapy (injections directly into the problem vein). But there is an alternative! At The Cherrywood Clinic, we use our medical-grade aesthetics lasers to offer treatment that is effective, non-invasive, and allows you to immediately go about your day. Thread vein removal is one of my favourite treatments to carry out. Our clients are often surprised by how quick and simple the treatment is. In some cases, the results are instantaneous, and they’re often dramatic. As with all of the treatments offered by the Clinic, all clients are met for a one-on-one consultation. Following examination and test patching, a bespoke treatment plan is built for every client. The Clinic achieves full removal of unwanted veins with no damage to the surrounding skin, no injections, and no downtime.

Growing PAINS In her second column on the subject, Cienté founder Trisha Buller looks at the possible treatment options for people suffering from hair loss
THERE ARE A RANGE OF OPTIONS FOR MEN AND WOMEN
THERE ARE LOTIONS THAT CAN HELP
O
ur previous article discussed male and female pattern hair loss, and briefly explained the appearance of each. In this article, we take a look at some of the ways in which hair loss can be treated.
MEDICATIONS AND LOTIONS Depending on the type and extent of hair loss, there are a number of treatment options. Some treatments can be effective in both men and women, while others are only suitable for either male pattern or female pattern hair loss. The loss or thinning of hair has become more prevalent over recent years and the supply of medications and lotions has become a massive business. It's important to obtain specialist advice from a qualified Trichologist before taking any medication, not only to ensure you are using the best option for your specific hair loss, but also to protect yourself from some of the dubious potions widely available on the internet. The best solution really does depend on the underlying issues and blood tests can be a useful indicator of key medical issues that may contribute to hair loss. Minoxidil, for example, is suitable for both men and women, and can be administered in tablet or lotion form. It can stimulate hair growth in some individuals, but won't

loss is advanced, or is not suitable for treatment with medication or lotions, surgery might be the best choice. Hair transplant surgery can take a number of hours, and some individuals might need several sessions in order to achieve the results they desire. There is sometimes a stigma attached to hair transplant surgery, with some people worrying it won't look natural. This is a myth, however. Many individuals who have had successful hair transplants are left with a completely natural looking head of hair.
HELP IS AT HAND work for everyone. Finasteride is another option and is taken once a day. It works by blocking hormonal action and can help slow the progress of hair loss. This treatment must be administered by a GP because it can cause side effects including sexual dysfunction and decreased libido. Another treatment – this time for women – is to use a medication that blocks the effects of the androgen hormones. This has been proven to slow hair loss in some cases.
SURGERY Surgery is often the only real option for those who want to completely reverse their hair loss. Long seen as the preserve of the rich and famous, hair loss surgery is now far more accessible to the average person than it used to be. If your hair
New and improved treatments are coming to the market all the time. It can be confusing, so always work with a qualified Trichologist. Some therapies work best when used in conjunction with others, while medications must be used alone. A treatment plan can involve more than one pathway. Be patient, some treatments can take up to 12 months before you notice any difference (taking pictures at each stage can show progress), but most of all, always follow the instructions and advice of suitably qualified professionals. CIENTE Trisha Buller is a trained and qualified Trichologist and is the founder of Ciente Hair & Health Spa. Find out more by visiting ciente.co.uk or trishabuller.com

n 2017, Katie Seidler set up her Instagram account @hello_haus to share her work. Since then she has worked on a host of private client projects, both residential and commercial, creating content for brands and has had her design work featured in many interior magazines and the national press. Absolutely Hertfordshire spoke to the St Albans local to find out more. Q Have you always been
interested in interior design?
A It’s always been a passion of mine ever
since I was a teenager. Whether it was watching Changing Rooms or going to the Grand Design show at Olympia as a 13-yearold, it’s something that has always been a love of mine. The connection our interiors have on our mood and mindset have always intrigued me and I love that even the smallest of changes could make a huge difference to how our homes make us feel. Q How old were you when you decided a
path in interiors was the career for you?
A I was 21 when I took evening classes
in Interior Design to build technical skills behind my passion and then chose a career path as a retail buyer,
HER WORK HAS BEEN WELL RECEIVED ON SOCIAL MEDIA
which I did for 17 years and loved. I think when you are creative you can apply those skills to so many different jobs and buying gave me the chance to use that creativity. I started my Instagram account back in 2017 to share my tips and knowledge of interior design, alongside my own home renovation, which further fuelled my love of it. Back in 2020 during the pandemic I decided to set up my own interiors business full time and here we are now. Q What inspired you to set up the
Instagram account @hello_haus?
“My Instagram account grew beyond what I thought it could and has allowed me to create my interiors business”
A This was really an outlet for me to share
my knowledge, ideas and tips whilst I was decorating my own home. It grew beyond what I thought it could and has allowed me to create my interiors business. Q What was the early response
like to what you posted?
A It was great, Instagram was very
KATIE SEIDLER
different back then! It was all about a beautiful still image, which was perfectly set up for interiors accounts. I love the community and connection it allowed A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

me to build and I now have people who I can call my friends because of the app. Q How did this evolve into a business? A It was a slow evolution from sharing my
ideas on Instagram, to setting up my first workshop in St Albans in 2018. I loved meeting people face to face and helping them get started on their own projects by creating a mood board. I still run this workshop today across St Albans and Harpenden. From this I started to offer online design services nationwide to help people with their homes without the larger investment of an onsite interior designer. It’s been a natural evolution since then as I now offer in person design locally and have been lucky to work with some brilliant clients. Q What is it about Japanese
and Scandinavian design that you love so much? A That’s an easy one, it’s because they are all about connecting us to nature
“I love Japanese and Scandinavian design as they are about creating calm” and creating calm. Both Japanese and Scandinavian design is centred around warm interiors without lots of “fuss”, using natural materials to keep us grounded and neutral colours that balance the space. I love the texture that both aesthetics focus on and creating homes that are simple but beautiful. Q How do you begin working
with a new client?
A Whether it’s online or in person it always
begins with a consultation to find out what they need, what works for them now and most importantly what doesn’t. I can then get an insight into their life and how I can help create an interior that’s both functional and beautiful (within their set budget). After this I can create a mood board to visualise the project and then the design work begins. I like to make the process as simple as possible, there’s no point complicating it! Q What kind of projects come your way? A I have been lucky enough to work
on a wide variety of projects from one room re-designs, an estate agency, a shop refurb and complete home renovations. They are always so varied and this is what makes it so much fun. Q What recent stand out projects
have you had in St Albans?
A Not necessarily St Albans, but one of my
first projects was at a local independent homeware store in Harpenden called Map Stores. I worked alongside the amazing owners to turn a pop-up store into a
74
permanent design led space to showcase the incredible Danish homeware. A few years on and I still love seeing the space and how well it functions for them. Q How long have you lived in St Albans
and what do you love about it?
A I have lived in St Albans for over ten
years now. I love the buzz of the city and the independent bars, restaurants and shops. There is such a great community here too and it’s great to buy from people you know and have a relationship with. Q What happens at your workshops? A I run the workshops in person, but also
online now as it was really popular during lockdowns. The workshops are for anyone starting a project (big or small), but feels lost about where to begin. With the growth of Instagram and Pinterest it’s so easy to be confused about your own style, so I start by helping everyone get clear and focussed on their goals and start to visualise the space. Then, with my help and hints and tricks we make mood boards. It’s a really creative event and I love how energised and clear everyone is afterwards. Q How do you see the future
of Hello Haus evolving?
A There’s so much in my brain of where I
see the business heading. I will continue to offer my design services and workshops, but I would love to create my own range of products in keeping with my aesthetic. hellohaus.co.uk

f there is one thing that we have all realised over the past two years, it is the absolute need for all of us to find new ways of communication. In those early days of spring 2020, we had very little option but to embrace Zoom and certainly our home diary was scattered with invitations for “Virtual Meetings down the Pub!” and family get-togethers on screen. At Laidlaw Education, we are constantly exploring ways to communicate with children in our teaching – not always just by speech and voice. However, it became very clear that, when face masks were required to be used, for many children and adults, communication became harder; facial cues were hidden as well as the ability to watch the articulation of a teacher, particularly for younger children and those with specific needs. The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists also underlined how much harder it was for those with hearing loss to communicate as lip-reading was clearly impossible. Face masks with transparent panels over the mouth are now used. We have all come to understand even more how important it is to explore new ways of communicating with each other. Against this backdrop, the annual Deaf Awareness Week, which takes place from 2-8 May, has caused me to reflect. This special week aims to promote an understanding of the importance of social inclusion around the deaf community.
“There are over ten million people in the UK with hearing loss” It highlights all the positive aspects of living with deafness, but also raises awareness of the isolation that deaf people can sometimes experience. Indeed, you may not be aware that there are over ten million people in the UK who are living with some form of hearing loss. If your autumn Saturday evenings included snuggling up on the sofa to watch BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing, you, like me, will have shared the joy of watching EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis’ wonderful dancing and perfect rhythm, knowing that she was the first deaf contestant on the show. She and her professional partner, Giovanni Pernice, won the show but have, more importantly, shone a very bright, creative and positive light on promoting the positivity of the deaf community. Ayling-Ellis’ inspirational personality led to a significant increase in people wanting to learn Sign Language, for example. Equally moving is this year’s Oscar winning movie, CODA. Coda stands for Child(ren) of Deaf Adults and the film tells the story of 17-year-old Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones) as the only hearing member of a deaf family in Massachusetts. The film's exploration of the deaf community is real and authentic, even though the plot is fictious. Alongside Emilia Jones, who spent many months learning to sign for the part, deaf actors Daniel Durant, Troy Kotsur, and Academy Award-winner Marlee Matlin star as the rest of Ruby's family. Troy Kotsur has made history as the first deaf man to win an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. So, as Deaf Awareness Week dawns, let’s be more aware of our means of communication. You may not want to learn Sign Language yet, but we can all be more aware of what we can do to embrace everyone in the way that we communicate.

ANIMAL MAGIC

he benefits of having an onsite farm and resident animals in school is becoming more popular for independent schools for a variety of reasons. Few could argue that there is a genuine simplicity to the relationship humans have with animals. Animals are unconditionally grateful for the love and care that we give them, and the mutual bond and regard between human and animal grows from the start of a simple connection. For this reason, animals can have a huge impact on how we feel day to day, particularly on days when we might be struggling or feeling low. Our school, on the outskirts of Croxley Green in Hertfordshire, is home to around 50 animals
including donkeys, ponies, sheep, pigs, micro pigs, tortoise, goats and pygmy goats. Our smallholding is a source of pride and joy to all of our pupils and staff who each take an active role in their care. Our animals are also an important part of daily life at school for our children. They are not farmed; they are here until retirement and most of them are rescued animals. None of our animals live alone. We rotate them around several different paddocks over the course of each year and our children understand that it is also good for the animal’s mental health to have variety and companionship in their lives. Regular interaction with the animals at York House has developed a sense of calm and self-reliance within our community. It is also inspiring curiosity and adventure as our

children learn some key life skills and develop a sense of responsibility by caring for the animals. Animals are some of the best listeners around and, in many cases, they have become valuable companions for a number of our pupils. Our children get the chance to talk to the animals about their day and to share their emotions and thoughts without fear of judgement. We have also found that caring for the animals gives our children an increased level of maturity as they appreciate how much the animals rely on them for their food and general care. This has also translated into the classroom environment with a number of children demonstrating a heightened positive attitude in class after spending quality time with the animals. Experts have long praised the benefits of animal therapy, and in a world where childhood mental health cases are still rising, many children find they can connect with animals more easily than people. For those pupils who need to share their feelings and emotions further, we have also created extra sessions named ‘Donkey Downtime’. This is a structured forum in which pupils can share, reflect and discuss matters during their day at school. We are continually looking for ways to develop our smallholding in the future and to rescue more animals; this spring will see the opening of our very first trout pond.

Building a positive approach to exams

his summer's GCSE, A Level and IB exams are set to go ahead for the first time since 2019. That means this year’s A Level and IB cohort will become the first to sit sixth form exams without having taken formal GCSE papers in Year 11. New research from private tuition and home-schooling company Enjoy Education finds that in light of exam cancellations over the last two years, exam anxiety is one of parents’ greatest concerns. The research, which surveyed 1,500 parents of school-aged children, found that nearly two thirds of sixth form parents are worried that their teenager hasn’t sat national exams before, while 29% of students negatively
impacted by returning to school this year are struggling with exam anxiety. After two years of disrupted education, it’s more important than ever that exam students this year feel confident and prepared for their exams – and we all have a role to play in helping them feel ready this summer. The research finds that despite the growing worries around exams, there is a bright side. Lockdown learning has helped parents to feel closer than ever to their children’s learning, empowering parents to make decisions to help their children and teenagers feel confident ahead of exams this year. 61% of those surveyed said they had learnt something new about the way their child learns, while 60% feel they previously had misconceptions about their child’s learning style.
“As the research shows, there are unique pressures surrounding this year’s exam cohort and we are committed to making sure students have the support they need”, says Enjoy Education Founder Kate Shand. “If your teenager is facing exams, they will likely need more help this year navigating the path positively and with confidence, which is why we’re offering all parents free consultations to make sure the right content, revision and exam strategies are in place during these final months.” Book your free Revision and Exam Consultation with an expert consultant at Enjoy Education to help your teenager build a positive and achievable revision plan for exam success this summer. enjoyeducation.co.uk
