2012 was an extraordinary year for London. And for London property. Last year we showed the world what a fantastic place London is. From the memorable Queen’s Jubilee to the inspiring and triumphant spirit of London in 2012, we celebrated with the world and proved what makes this city such a vibrant, culturally-rich cosmopolitan place and undeniably, the world’s most desirable real estate capital. Strutt & Parker have sold and let more property than ever before and achieved 104% of our clients’ combined asking prices whilst doing so. Despite fewer people coming to the market, it took us on average less than a month to agree terms for our clients. Furthermore, 97% of our clients said that they would use us again; a statistic we cherish most. But we prefer to let our clients speak for us...

EDITOR’S LETTER

F

ashion is a funny thing, full of smoke, mirrors and hype. It worships individuality, but it’s built on a foundation of conformists and sychophants. Everybody knows the story of the emperor’s new clothes and how a sartorial spell can be broken by a lone laugh – but still, fashion’s own myth continues to win us all over. One person who’s neither a conformist nor a sychophant is Philip Colbert, a sort of anti-designer, whose fashion label The Rodnik Band, based in a small studio off Golborne Road, makes clothes for people who aren’t interested in trends. He took us on a tour of the area for this month’s fashion shoot and we shot his washing machine dress in the launderette, his leg-of-ham dress in the butchers, his lobster dress at the fishmongers and his popcorn dress in the diner. For Philip, it’s more art than fashion, and apart from anything else, there’s a lot of fun in it. So if you want to brighten up a dull January, or if you’re sick of fashion’s overly serious feel, look up Rodnik and get yourself a fish-andchip frock. Or maybe just a ham-bag. For 2013, we’re predicting they’ll be all the rage. A happy new year to all readers.

GATE THEATRE

Pulitzer prize finalist Rajiv Joseph writes an extremely atypical love story that spans 30 years starting with Kayleen and Doug’s first meeting in the nurse’s office of their elementary school aged eight to further down the line when they are adults, but not necessarily grown-up. It features all the change that happens at the end of innocence and the entry into the real world. Maddening, emotional, moving – it encapsulates modern America through the eyes of these unique protagonists. gatetheatre.co.uk

ROYAL ALBERT HALL

January THE PERFECT PLACE TO GROW: 175 YEARS OF THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART EXHIBITION UNTIL 3 JANUARY

All the key moments in the RCA’s 175 year history are being exhibited, examining the advances and progression it has made over the years. As well as that it will be focusing on the themes; ‘Art for Industry’, ‘Public Purpose’, ‘Personal Expression’ and ‘Political Expression’. Old works and contemporary works are all on display, giving great understanding into how the RCA has affected London’s art scene. rca.ac.uk

The awesomeness of the Cirque du Soleil needs no introduction, but their new show Kooza is the first time it has ever been performed in Britain. Combining their trademark acrobatics with clowning around. Kooza is the story of a loner (The Innocent) who tries to find his way in the world and along the way encounters trapeze-artists, contortionists, the high wire and the Wheel of Death. royalalberthall.com

PAVEMENT PIROUETTES Peter Bartlett’s intriguing and beautiful photographs of ballerinas on the streets of Notting Hill are on display at Blaze Image this month. Absolutely quizzes him

Why ballerinas? Why on the streets? That’s a good question. To be honest, I knew very little about ballet before this year. I happened to meet some dancers on shoots I was involved in and just thought they were so graceful. Even though they seemed tiny and fragile, they were clearly incredibly strong. Added to which, I found it fascinating just how totally disciplined they were. They got me interested enough to go to my first ballet in February and I was hooked. Pretty soon after, I had the idea that it might be really interesting to photograph them on the streets, in urban environments, and see how that fragile beauty might look against the concrete and tarmac.

Holland Park. What was it about the Westway that attracted you? The Westway is such an iconic feature of the area. What I love about it most, as a photographer, are the lines – it literally snakes its way through west London. There’s also something poetic about it: while on one hand it’s concrete, brutal, and utilitarian, it’s also organic and benign and in a strange way, seems to watch over us all. Perhaps only west Londoners will get that. Did you attract a lot of interest while shooting? We did occasionally draw a crowd but fortunately always in a good way – everyone loves a ballerina, after all. The girls were amazing and very professional. Considering that a lot of them were from other countries: the US, Canada, Greece, Lebanon, Latvia, France, Belgium, Lithuania, Italy,

‘Everyone loves a ballerina, after all’

And why Notting Hill? Notting Hill is where I live and work so it was the obvious choice

of location. There are so many great backdrops, from the ruggedly urban Westway to the beautiful white-washed streets of

Israel, Australia, Holland as well as the UK (and some were jet-lagged, having just flown in for an audition) without exception they were totally unfazed. They all really got on board, got focused and did their best to help us make something beautiful. How have the pictures been received? The response has been really overwhelming. Press has been amazing and the website has been getting a lot of traffic from all over the world. Limited edition print runs of each in different sizes

are available and they’re selling really well. The dancers get a percentage of each print sale, as does a local charity so there’s a real feelgood factor about the project. Which is your favourite shot? I’ve got a few favourites but if I had to pick one it’s be Emely Aeltman in Powis Square. I love the pose and the light – plus, the setting for me is so Notting Hill. These prints are on display at Blaze Image, 111 Talbot Road, W11 until the end of January. pointeproject.viewbook.com

LE A RN THE UKULELE

If your new year’s resolutions included learning a new skill, it’s worth considering the ukulele. Back by popular demand, Danny Wootton’s Ukulele for Beginners course returns to the Idler (Mondays, 7 January to 25 February) and covers basic chords, strumming and music theory. You will even learn how to play ‘well-known pop songs’ and the course will end with a party and a performance from the group. Educate yourself on the subject of vintage fashion with Taschen’s marvellous new and comprehensive tome Fashion Designers A–Z, available as a series of six Designer Editions. Each edition (a total of 11,000 copies) is bound in a fabric created by one of six designers–Akris, Etro, Stella McCartney, Missoni, Prada, and Diane von Furstenberg–and comes in a plexiglas box. Crafted by hand at a bindery in the heart of Italy, and stamped with a unique number, every copy is an instant classic, and an addition to your fashion library that is truly one-of-a-kind. The Design Museum Collection goes on display this month for the fi rst time, allowing us a sneak preview of what will be the museum’s permanent collection of 20th century design when it opens in Kensington next year. Hundreds of items create an investigation into the impact of design on our daily lives, among them the anglepoise lamp and Jo Colombo’s bobby trolley, pictured. Extraordinary Stories about Ordinary Things opens on 29 January at the Design Museum, Shad Thames, SE1. designmuseum.org

The newly refurbished Electric cinema takes comfort to a whole new level, with seats that are so wide and so reclined that the front row now comprises actual beds. Yes, you can be completely horizontal with a glass of red wine at your side, munching on donuts, but in a stylish way. And no falling asleep. With sofas at the back and side tables for every pair of seats, it’s yet another world away from the notorious fleapit it used to be. electriccinema.co.uk

Daisy Goodwin and Emma Freud are recent converts to the world of e-bikes, embracing twowheeled transport without the legwork, as an e-bike gives the reluctant cyclist a helping hand in the form of a battery-powered push. Founder of Portobello Road’s new Justebikes explains: ‘E-bikes aren’t really bikes for cyclists. But they are ideal for people who have always liked the idea of cycling, but worry that they don’t have the energy to take on such a big physical challenge.’ Daisy Goodwin rhapsodized in The Times about her new wheels, so if you resolve to cycle in 2013 but aren’t ready for routine pedalling, take heed. justebikes.co.uk 23

Philip Colbert’s spoof fashion label The Rodnik Band merges fashion and art with a large dose of humour. Pendle Harte visits his W10 studio

42

RODNIK.indd 42

P

hilip Colbert produces two clothing collections a year. He has a diffusion line and a range of accessories; he shows at London Fashion Week and his dresses can sell for £1,000. So far, so fashion. But, unusually for someone with a portfolio like this, he couldn’t give a hoot about trends and doesn’t call himself a designer. Colbert’s background is in philosophy and he describes himself as a satirist. ‘I think of it as pop art clothing,’ he says; and with pieces including the Washing Machine dress, the Leg of Ham dress, the Boiled Egg dress and the Urinal dress, most of his buyers are art collectors and Japanese anglophiles. This is The Rodnik Band, a spoof fashion label that brings a bit of much-needed humour to an industry that is often accused of taking itself too seriously. Who can be serious when carrying a bag in the shape of a ham? (the ‘ham bag’ is one of his biggest sellers). ‘Fashion, obviously, is absurd,’ says Colbert, talking me through the collection in his small studio off Golborne Road. ‘And some of the things involved… it’s mind death.’ There’s certainly an element of the Emperor’s New Clothes in the fashion world. Nobody would dare to point out absurdity in something dressed up as a trend, but in Colbert’s work, the absurdity of, say, a dress in the shape of a boiled egg in a stripey egg cup (yes, really), is right there for anyone to see, not pretending to be anything other than absurd. Colbert’s conversation is enthusiastic, analytical and fast-paced, darting between ideas and fragments as he tells me the story behind Rodnik. ‘My work wouldn’t appeal to a traditional fashion mind. I’m not really doing anything in a fashion sense,’ he says. And: ‘I believe in the punk spirit that anybody can do anything,’ he says, admitting that his ‘design skills are a

bit limited’. His whole rise to fashion fame has been quite a whirlwind, built on hype, much in the way of the traditional fashion newcomer, only without the passion for clothes. The way he describes it, he started out importing a few scarves from Russia, then ‘folded them into dresses’, and when those sold surprisingly well (in spite of those limited design skills), Colbert brought in some actual designers from Saint Martin’s to elaborate the collection slightly, encouraged a bit of hype (a gig he did with a joke band and Peaches Geldof was widely dubbed ‘the worst gig in the world’) ‘and suddenly everybody wanted to buy it’. So Rodnik ran like that for a few seasons, selling in Barneys and other high profile places. ‘But then I lost my creative vision and thought it was a bit of a con – the dresses were around £600 and quite hard to sell and I thought it would be better to do things I was passionate about.’ So, applying a philosophical mindset to the world of frocks, Colbert began to mix art and clothes, resulting in his Pop Art vision, in which art can be clothing and vice versa. It’s not entirely a new idea – after all, Yves Saint Laurent made a dress from a Piet Mondrian painting in 1965, and early Moschino has more than a whiff of spoof to it. He’s not interested in providing people with a capsule wardrobe, but in ‘10% of the wardrobe’. In the collection there’s a Yellow Submarine coat, a postbox dress and an outfit

‘Who can be serious carrying a bag in the shape of a ham?’

43

RODNIK.indd 43

18/12/2012 20:28

‘My work wouldn’t appeal to a traditional fashion mind’ comprising a fish top and a chip skirt, plus a variety of bags in the shapes of sharks, cups of tea, matchboxes and other random things. Collaborations – big news in the fashion world – are important for Colbert too. He was filmed interviewing Alain de Botton (they discussed the philosophy of fashion and decided to launch a philosophical fashion line, which so far hasn’t happened) and other projects have included a film with Alison Jackson where Kate and Pippa Middleton (lookalikes, naturally) come to his studio

for a comedy fitting, plus a series of gigs with Japanese girl band No Cars. The Japanese love Rodnik and are big purchasers of the Routemaster Bus mackintosh and bag. As a non-fashion type with no interest in fashion, Rodnick is a serious fashion enterprise, without the seriousness. Watch out for him. therodnikband.com

My most inspiring experience I was invited recently to join the pilgrimage to El Rocio (below, right) with the people who make my shoes and boots. It was a highly emotional, very beautiful and spiritual experience. It was not easy either. We walked 25 kms a day.

My most treasured possession I was recently given an old souvenir gold bracelet that tell the story in bas-relief of Don Quixote. It is so charming and joins my collection of antique jewellery.

My favorite piece of art Impossible to answer. I fall in love with a new artist each week. I was recently given the most beautiful giant phototgraph printed on thick paper by the Barcelonian/American artist Nicole Gagnum. I adore its colour palette and rhythms of nature give such energy. FRAME A little piece of the New York/East London fitness scene has arrived in the form of Frame, Queens Park. There is a trendy, stylish, warm and friendly feel to the place. The changing rooms, which include gorgeous and natural Ren products are surprisingly luxurious in contrast to the more NYC loft style of the rest of the fitness centre. Co-founders Joan Murphy and Pip Black caused a fitness storm with Frame Shoreditch and have ‘the knowledge’ where health is concerned. They run a whole host of classes from Pilates reformer which promises to give you the body of a supermodel, excellent yoga, pre- and post-natal, kettlebells, dance and body conditioning classes are all on offer too. If you fancy an all-round super boost, Frame Camp could be the perfect class for you, combining intense cardio, strengthening and toning exercises for an all-round super health boost. The instructors are all first class, ensuring that you are in the right position to gain maximum results, without being remotely intimidating. For me, it’s Frame Method, which aims to strengthen, stretch and tone every muscle group. It’s a brilliant, dynamic and fairly fast-paced one-hour class taken by co-founder Joan. While the exercises are perfectly manageable, I definitely feel that I’ve worked every muscle the following day. After the warm up, we use the ballet barre, pilates ball, cushion and yoga strap to work all the muscle groups individually to the point of fatigue (ie until you feel The Burn), closely guided by Joan. You leave feeling hot and thoroughly worked out. In no time at all, you shall have the bum of Giselle. Sheena Skinner 27 Beethoven Street, W10; 020 8960 4849; moveyourframe.com

DANIEL MIKHAEL The highly capable team of Greek brothers have made Daniel Mikael a stylish and popular salon in ever-exclusive Connaught Village. Service is deft and professional with an insistence on relaxation (I am offered a glass of wine repeatedly, and they seem surprised when I decline; they have an actual fully stocked cocktail bar in the basement). My hair is snipped, highlighted and blow dried beyond recognition and I emerge looking fresh. Daniel has styled Claudia Winkleman, Savannah Miller and George Michael as well as styling shoots and hair for London Fashion Week. 4 Porchester Place, W2, 020 7262 5117; danielmikhael.com

SWANKY LASH AND BROW BAR Swanky has created a whole new community. Women all over west London now recognise each other from Swankys, which though outgrowing its small space, allows for the most sociable, gossipy manicures in town. Sisters Sophia and Donia and their white-clad team are experts at threading, manicures, pedicures and more, and everything comes with a lot of chat and relaxed, friendly feel. The Swanky sisterhood is growing and never before have the women of NW10 had such well-groomed, colourful nails. Caprice and Sienna Miller are fans. 26 Chamberlayne Road, NW10; 020 8964 2569

HYDRAFACIAL AT WATERHOUSE YOUNG A non surgical facelift is how the hydrafacial at Waterhouse Young is billed... And it does not disappoint. Every wrinkle, fine line, oily and acne-prone skin is suitably treated, no blemish left untouched. A special hand piece is the weapon of choice – and a multi-talented weapon at that. Removing dead skin cells and impurities in the skin, whilst infusing with cleansing, hydrating, and antioxidant serums, it is a super effective way of making sure the pores soak up all the product. The final flourish is a red laser light, which helps circulation, reduces redness and irritation, and stimulates collagen and elastin production. Best of all, there’s no pain, just lovely staff and a chair so comfortable you almost fall asleep. The result? Excellent, rejuvenating and leaves you glowing. POWERVIBE Many people assume that the Powerplate is a magic machine and all you have to do is stand on it for it to shake your muscles into shape by itself. Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple. It’s true that a Powerplate workout is a fast, effective way to work your muscles, build strength and tone your limbs. But it won’t happen without you breaking a sweat. That’s why you need the guidance of a trainer who will force you into a series of stretches, squats, jumps and other exercises that make use of the vibrating plate in creative ways. At Westbourne Park Villas’ Powervibe Fitness Studio, staff offer carefully planned bespoke programmes using the Powerplate alongside other methods –

KICK START A FITNESS REGIME FOR 2013 Start your new year with a new regular routine brought to you by Powervibe Fitness Studio, set to target each part of your body for an effective routine you can do at home, on the road, or in the office. This month, you will learn how to properly do a squat and overhead press. 1. Stand with feet hip width apart. Arms are by your side. 2. Bend knees and stick out bum as if you were going to sit on a chair. Keep back straight and make sure knees don’t go beyond toes. 3. At the bottom of the squat, your weight should be in your heels (as a way to double check, you should be able to wiggle your toes). 4. As you return to standing position, squeeze your bum and lift your arms straight above your head for the overhead press. 5. Return arms to side and move right into the squat. 6. Repeat for 15-20 repetitions. 7. To make this move more challenging, hold bottles of water or tins of tomatoes in your hands for increased resistance.

Pilates, boxing and more – to get just the results you are after. Sessions are brief at just half an hour because the Powerplate intensifies all exercises, so half an hour here is the equivalent of around 90 minutes of regular (off-plate) exercise. And moreover, the team at Powervibe is so friendly and welcoming that even the least enthusiastic gymbotherer is likely to quite enjoy going. Powervibe Fitness Studio offers Power Plate, spin classes, pilates and bespoke personal training in small, semi-private class sizes which keep instruction personalised and gets maximum results in a short amount of time. 95a Westbourne Park Villas,W2, 020 7229 9614; powervibe.co.uk

5.47am Woken by sound of Sue snoring. Am on a Life Skills weekend workshop in West Norwood sharing a room with Sue from Croxley Green. Try to get back to sleep but Sue sounds like a freight train. 5.56am Text Guru Darren to thank him for telling me to attend this workshop. I’ve already learnt so much about myself. Then read my Manifest Your Perfect Destiny book. 7.01am There’s only cornflakes and wholemeal bread for breakfast. I ask the lady serving where the gluten/wheat/dairy/caffeine/soya free section is, but she doesn’t know. Says she will talk to management. 7.23am Still no response from management. Spot Maurice the Workshop Facilitator and ask him to sort it out; he says he will do what he can. I miss Guru Darren. 9.07am The first session of the day: Getting in touch with unexpressed emotion. Maurice asks us to remember a significant episode in our childhood where we suppressed anger. 9.23am Chris from Kings Langley is re-enacting the time when his father locked him in the cupboard with a broken fridge freezer. Maurice is role-playing Chris’s father and the two of them are getting quite shouty with each other. 9.38am Maurice has had to take Chris outside. We can hear them doing deep breathing exercises by the kitchen wheelie bin. 10.12am Finally it’s my turn. As my ‘emotion portal’, I have selected the time my mother lost me in the playground when I was five. Sue has taken on the role of my mother. 10.25am Tell mother aka Sue how much it hurt that she didn’t come to find me for a full 15 minutes. Mother aka Sue comforts me and says that she loves me very much. 10.34am Feel inexplicable and overwhelming anger towards mother/Sue. Tell her that she shouldn’t have had children in the first place if she couldn’t look after them properly. 10.37am Slap mother/Sue. 10.39am Maurice says that physical violence in unacceptable. He has spent years creating a safe environment in which to help people work through their emotional blockages. I am clearly not ready for this advanced weekend workshop. He is, however, facilitating a beginnners workshop in South Ruislip in early February. 10.48am Back in bedroom, packing. Spot a Snickers bar in Sue’s wash bag. It’ll play havoc with my sugar/ dairy/wheat/ intolerances but I don’t care. Sue had it coming. Eat it while I wait for taxi to take me to the station.

Arabella Preston’s make up tips from behind the scenes

How to achieve that après-ski glow

A

lpine air brings a glow to the skin like nothing else. Throw in a morning’s adrenalin-fi lled ski-ing and a warming mug of Glühwein at lunch and you have the secret to eternal youth. Maybe. Or, you can cheat and recreate the look at home. Michael Kors showcased the après-ski beauty to perfection at his Autumn Winter show. Girls with highly-flushed cheeks, flawless complexions and stained lips radiated youthful good health. To achieve the look international make-up artist Kay Montano recommends using a luminising foundation, such as the Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser and patting it gently into your cheeks. Then layer a creme blush on top – applying it to the cheekbones, ‘coming further over to the centre of the face than you might usually,’ she says. It’s crucial for this look to retain a naivete and gentle old-fashionedness, so load up with mascara – but on the top lashes only. And Montano even advises: ‘If you’re very fair, then just curling them will do.’ For evening, adding a slick of MAC’s Satin Taupe eyeshadow will look effortless. Then use a lip stain or creamy matte colour on the lips; patting it in with your fi nger is best to keep them looking slightly undone. Remember to keep it low-maintenance – you’re a carefree snow-bunny, after all.

A family affair Kensington’s most stylish toddlers congregate at Maggie & Rose members’ club. Founder Maggie Bolger tells Gemma Billington why family clubs are the way forward

I

t is pertinent to point out, before we go further, that I personally don’t have any children. Therefore, the Maggie & Rose concept – a family member’s club – was not exactly an institution that I had any prior experience of or need for. Upon my visit to meet founder Maggie Bolger, the Kensington site is filled with pushchairs, pregnant women and clusters of excitable youngsters. Bolger is friendly with an astute, business-like demeanour, and clutches one of Maggie & Rose’s famed coffees. Bolger summarises the concept of the club pragmatically: ‘It’s a place you can go, with your children, and

hang out whenever you want. It’s supposed to be your home from home, that’s the whole ethos.’ On a humdrum mid-morning Tuesday, the place is positively bustling. Clearly Bolger has hit the proverbial nail on the head. The Maggie & Rose story began 12 years ago when Bolger had her first child and encountered not only the challenge of forming a new community of friends, but also a distinct lack of child-friendly boltholes that ticked all the right boxes. ‘When I had my first child none of my friends had kids. Not one. So I didn’t know how to meet people’ she admits, ‘I had to traipse around church halls and libraries where 20 or so kids would be packed in. There was no quality

moment that you could meet people.’ Though she concurs that much has improved in recent years, her early experiences prompted her to create the kind of hub she so craved for herself, fellow parents and her children. One that would be stimulating and entertaining for both mother and child... and serve the all-important great coffee and brownies. ‘It was about finding a place where you felt you belonged and not like a second class citizen, basically, because nobody really put a lot of thought into mothers at the time.’ she adds. So what is the Maggie & Rose magic that keeps the little ones entertained and parents forking out a yearly membership fee? For one, the classes and workshops aim

high; with regular visits to the Tate and other big museums – of which Bolger is a huge fan – and a popular cooking class that aspires to teach recipes beyond Rice Krispie cakes and pitta bread pizzas. Maggie & Rose also provide popular birthday parties, tailor-made to your little one’s every whim. Though there are sadly no stories of outrageous requests when I prompt Bolger to spill the beans, she gives a wonderful insight into the world of spectacular party cakes from Jane

Asher and relates an entertaining story of a near life-size Winnie the Pooh cake and the challenges of cutting into it without traumatising the young guests. Child-friendly industries are on the up, and though many formerly adult-centric businesses have cottoned on to all things kid-friendly, Maggie & Rose were really the pioneers. Maggie & Rose recently celebrated their fi fth birthday by opening a second club in Chiswick, in an impressive 7,500 sq/ft building with 2,000 sq/ft garden and roof terrace, featuring a rather fabulous helter-skelter running through two levels. She describes

the site as ‘a bit more New York warehouse-y’ and even confi rms that they have (miraculously) received planning permission to build on the roof terrace. In terms of further expansion, Bolger describes the business as ‘very ambitious’, admitting ‘we’d love to have one wherever they’d take us, wherever we could fi nd a space.’ Ever ambitious, Bolger and the team have identified further areas to expand into, both in London and further afield. ‘Everyone needs a Maggie & Rose’ she summarises. Judging by the happy customers – both parents and children – it would be hard to disagree. maggieandrose.com 63

How does a Danish woman become one of London’s major sushi players? Absolutely meets Feng Sushi’s Silla Bjerrum to discuss sustainable fishing and healthy eating

n 2008, Silla Bjerrum was the first woman to be invited to the prestigious Seven Samurai Sushi Competition. That’s no mean feat, especially since she’s not even Japanese. The Danish-born sushi expert has also served as a judge for the competition twice, she teaches regularly at Leith’s cookery school, Divertimenti and Billingsgate and is a leading voice on issues surrounding sushi and sustainability. She’s also a serious businesswoman, having launched the Feng Sushi chain that now has six branches (including Notting Hill Gate and Kensington Church Street) and is founding member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, and recently won the Sustainable City Awards for the food category. This is a company with some highly ethical credentials and a dedication to both healthy eating and healthy fishing. It’s not one to be overlooked. Bjerrum is a busy woman. Recently appearing on Japanese TV talking about the crisis of endangered Blue fin Tuna, she’s passionate about her causes and passionate about sushi, which she first discovered in London almost 20 years ago. ‘I went for an interview at Nippon Tuk, owned by Jeremy Rose, in 1994. I fell in to sushi, but

soon discovered I had a flair for it and absolutely loved the food.’ She saw immediate parallels between Danish and Japanese food, and soon abandoned her plans for an academic career for a life in sushi. ‘Japanese food is clean, simple flavours with a real focus on ingredients – not dissimilar to Nordic cuisine – and it has been so interesting to see the growth of Japanese food in the UK over the last 18 years.’ Feng Sushi first opened on Fulham Road in 1999. ‘My then business partner Jeremy Rose and I wanted to do a good quality delivery sushi concept, while offering casual eat-in too. Over the years we have expanded organically. In 2010 the original shareholder group departed and Luke Johnson came onboard as serious investor. Since then we have enhanced the business, in particular online delivery, and opened up to new projects: a delivery hub in Billingsgate Market and a gorgeous restaurant on West Hampstead’s West End Lane offering eat-in, take-away and delivery. Our latest venture is a new design focusing on keeping the eat-in experience undisturbed by the delivery service.’ Running a business is very demanding, as everybody knows, so how does she manage any sort of work/life

balance? ‘I would lie if I said this is easy, but I love my family and I love my job, so it is all about ensuring one does not exclude the other,’ says Bjerrum. ‘I think it can be useful for children to see that a parent has an important role outside the home which they enjoy, but in return it is important to switch off at home and be there for the kids and do things with them they like to do regularly. I do not always get it right, but parenthood is a wonderful challenge in life.’ Silla actively supports the Marine Stewardship Council and has become an authority on sustainable fishing. ‘All our fish is sustainable sourced, it is our ethos, conscience, our insurance for future deliveries and our fengsushi.co.uk knowledge that well-sourced sustainable fish simply tastes better.’ And health-wise, sushi is one of the best things for you. ‘It is a well balanced meal of good carbs, right protein, the good fats, vegs and omega 3 and omega 6. Sushi is also very good for portion control, leaving you satisfied, but not bloated.’ For January, Silla has devised a special three-day diet, delivered to your door, which promises to kick start a healthy new year by helping to get rid of cravings. She says: ‘It consists of complex crab, seaweed and protein, but not wheat, sugar or preservatives and is approximately 1,500 calories a day, so you will not starve, but return to good habits after the festive period.’ Sounds good to us.

The Orchard

116 Kensington Park Road, W11 020 7313 4674 theorchardcanteen.com

O

pened a couple of months ago by eager and talented young chef Natasha Abraham, the Orchard is a deceptively simple lunch venue. Open only from midday to 3.30pm every weekday and with seating for just 10 people, it’s a small place built entirely on Notting Hill-bred Natasha’s love of cooking. This love was discovered and fuelled at The River Café, where she completed an apprenticeship that lured her away from the Oxford degree course she was half way through and led her to dedicate herself entirely to the kitchen. So, her idea is to offer up two separate lunchboxes every day, at £6 each, mostly to take away (though there are a few simple seats) and soon there will be breakfast too. Natasha cooks and serves it all up herself in the white, uncluttered space, and tweets daily to announce the day’s offerings. On our visit it was chicken schnitzel with crushed potato and bitter leaves, or leek, porcini and parsley soup with

sourdough bread. The schnitzel comes lukewarm in a paper box and Natasha’s skill shines through – chicken in simple breadcrumbs took on a wonderful texture, slightly crispy, with high quality meat and the addition of delicious crispy parsley and not a trace of grease. Crushed potatoes were another

lovely texture, and simple radicchio leaves with lemon added extra tang. The soup was almost unbelievably creamy, thick and hearty and deeply delicious. It’s certainly one of the best lunch options around. And then there are the cakes. We tried carrot cake, super moist and full of flavours (ingredients include pineapple, apparently) and a ginger cake that was light and topped with vanilla cream and redcurrant. Both were fluffy and tasty. Natasha sells bags of her home-made granola and when she starts offering breakfast, there will be homemade yogurt with house compote, cake of the day and freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice. The Orchard describes itsef as a canteen, but that sounds a bit sterile – this is a small place that really is a labour of love. 69

Island on the Rise 1 Keslake Mansions Station Terrace, NW10 020 8969 0405

or homely West Indian classics, Island on the Rise is the place. Owner Beverley is a motherly, welcoming face and, with the help of her daughter, she serves up a menu of family-oriented food that isn’t, as people might fear, all about the spicy pepper, but is all about wholesome, hearty dishes. There are home-made patties (made daily and selling fast at just £1.60) and a breakfast menu that spans porridge of the day (cornmeal, banana or oat) as well as fried ox liver, fried dumplings or the standard bacon and egg style fry-up. Snacks and sides include chicken wings, roti, ‘mac n cheese’ and fried plantain. For dinner, we started with saltfish fritters, which were fluffy and tasty, and loved main courses of vegetable curry (mixed beans, breadfruit, coconut) and the best-selling jerk chicken (home-

made jerk marinade and sweet and peppery barbecue gravy), both decorated with large slices of fried plantain and accompanied by lashings of rice and peas. Portions are huge, in character with the hearty, generous ideal, and everything is tasty and filling. Charistmatic Beverley has more plans for the place – in 2013 she’ll roll out a new menu with a focus on American staples such as biscuits, maybe grits, and some less starchy options, alongside more salads and children’s meals. And she’s keen on variety – she holds children’s parties here, plus open mic nights. There’s always a rum punch and a cocktail on the menu and she throws herself into events (like the recent black history month) with enthusiasm. With private catering options and free delivery within a generous three-mile radius, Island on the Rise is, quite literally, on the rise. 71

With a new menu each week, this service really lightens the load. jessicasrecipebag.co.uk

RUM PUNCH

Just opened in All Saints Road is The Rum Kitchen, a new venture from the people behind Ping and Love Brunch. It’s a Caribbean-inspired beach shack restaurant and cocktail bar, offering classics such as jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, curry mutton and oxtail – but best of all, there’s a secret cellar stocking over 100 different sorts of rum. We can’t wait to try it. 6-8 All Saints Road W11; 020 7920 6479; therumkitchen.com

Planning a party in January? Everybody will be on a health kick, so making sure your catering is suitably lean and restrained, while retaining a party feel, is no mean feat. So the lovely people at Social Pantry have devised a series of delicacies including tuna tartare salad, quail eggs on toast (pictured) and the admittedly less health-conscious chocolate brownie with gold leaf. socialpantry.co.uk

Sea of dreams

Family holidays needn’t be chaotic. Pendle Harte enjoys a relaxing stay at Corfu’s Marbella Beach Hotel, where everything is easy

T

ravelling to Greece when the headlines scream doom and gloom doesn’t feel quite right. Or is it? Are we supporting a dying economy with our imported pounds or exploiting a disastrous situation? What about rioting and will people resent us? We weren’t sure. The travel industry assures us that it’s fine, safe and a good idea to visit Greece. And anyway, it seems that there’s Greece, and there’s Corfu. In Corfu, it’s business

as usual, from the bustling airport to the tourist trail. Corfu is a place that relies so heavily on tourism that there’s little industry here that’s not fuelled by it in some way, from big hotels to shops selling snorkels and lilos, and if we all stayed away there would be no economy at all. The same applies to most of the islands and much of the mainland too, thanks to its beautiful, craggy coastline, sunny climate and decades of tourist-friendly development. Marbella Beach is one of the island’s finest hotels (the confusing name refers

to its beautiful beach, not the entirely unrelated Spanish resort) and it’s a large, hilltop structure, spread over an irregular-shaped site, an easy half-hour taxi ride from Corfu’s airport. While we are in the taxi, my phone rings. ‘Ms Harte? I’m afraid you’re going to miss dinner, but would you like us to set something up in your room for you? Do the children have any preferences?’ Someone at reception has clearly been reading my mind. The children haven’t eaten and it is getting late. This feels like

75

a good start to a week that’s designed to be undemanding and indulgent. We arrive in our deluxe family suite to find, as promised, a meal laid out for four, complete with – oh joy – a bottle of wine, plus mini desserts for the children. Switching off the extreme air-conditioning and opening the (two) balcony doors, we acclimatise to the fiercely warm evening air and wonder what the view will hold when the sun rises. Though not huge, our accommodation is cleverly designed for a family of four: there’s a children’s bedroom with its own bathroom, a living area with a sofa and outsize television, plus a main bedroom with a second outsize television (our girls are very impressed with this. Two televisions!) and a decadent-sized bathroom. When the sun does rise, it reveals spectacular views from both balconies. We can look down over the hotel’s manicured gardens to the beach and along the luscious coastline. And because of the angle of the rooms, and the lack of internal doors, we can see the sea from anywhere in the suite, including the bathroom. It’s a well-equipped arrangement; we have an espresso machine, a constantly refilled fruit bowl, a mass of toiletries, an extravagance of towels and a well-stocked mini bar. You can hire a car and tour the island easily from Marbella Beach, and a day in

Corfu Town is definitely not to be missed, but if you’re here for a week as a family there’s ample amusement to be had without leaving the hotel. There are five swimming pools, for a start, and access to the beach (clear water and good snorkelling) is down some rocky steps. We spend the week wafting from meal to meal via the pools, the beach and our balcony, with a few visits to the gym and some of the planned activities

for breakfast, followed by spaghetti and chips for lunch and dinner. For us, ultimately, the most delicious things were the simplest and most local – yoghurt and honey, for instance, and tomatoes and feta. Every evening brings entertainment that ranges from the bizarre but more hilarious than you’d expect (an Eastern European Beatles tribute band) to the fun for all the family (fire-eaters on the beach). If you wanted to eat out every night, you’d have to hire a car since there’s nowhere really to walk to, but this is a family holiday and it’s hugely convenient to stay put. Moreover there’s a kids disco every single evening and who could bear to miss that? With its beautifully kept grounds and spacious feel, Marbella Beach offers proper relaxation. It may be large, but it doesn’t feel crowded; it may be family-oriented but it’s not full of screaming brats. It retains a calm, almost otherworldly feel while catering quietly to your every need.

If you’re here for a week as a family, there’s ample amusement to be had without leaving the hotel – we avoid pool aerobics (too comical) but enjoy archery, while our daughters (age six and three) love the daily mini club, run by the energetic and lovely Steffi, who takes everybody’s children off their hands for a very welcome two hours every afternoon. You can never be hungry at Marbella Beach. Mealtimes comprise an allencompassing spread and the buffet offers a schizophrenic abundance of international favourites in a dining room that overlooks the sea. For children, it’s heaven. Left to their own devices they can have coco pops and pain au chocolat

Classic Collection Holidays (classic-collection.co.uk; 0800 294 918) offers 7 nights at Marbella Beach Hotel, Corfu from £570 per person in May 2013. Price based on 2 adults sharing a double room on a half board basis and includes return flights from London Gatwick (other UK departure airports available) to Corfu and private transfers.

TSCHUGGEN GRAND HOTEL, AROSA Otto Herwig came to Arosa in 1883. He was recovering from a lung condition and he needed clean mountain air to recuperate. It must have worked because he set up the Berghilf Sanatorium for lung patients in 1892. And so Arosa became primarily a place for bronchial sufferers until the winter season of 1929/1930, when it transformed into the Tschuggen Grand Hotel. Now, apart from Mario Botta’s new 43,000 sq/ft spa, the peace and quiet and fresh air of the little mountain-top village has hardly changed. The hotel lies at the top of a winding road and, when it finally comes into view, it’s like some secret place surrounded by pine trees that’s just sitting in the side of a mountain, waiting to be discovered by errant travellers. As well as taking on Mario Botta’s architectural vision, Carlo Rampazzi has recently been entrusted as designer of the rooms and, my word, it feels like you’re in an artist’s vivid dream. Huge, taller-than-needed headboards with individually decorated squares, colourful-patterned ceilings, high-back chairs and, in the south-facing rooms, just the panoramic gloriousness of the Alps. With 400 sq/ft to walk around in the smallest room, space isn’t exactly lacking, and the adjoining bathroom with marble-covered surfaces and heated floor is amazing. The spa triumphs: hot and cold pools, 12 treatment rooms, Swedish and Turkish saunas, a Jacuzzi… any sore joints after a hard day’s skiing will be well and truly loosened up. To add to this, the newly-built Tschuggen Express takes 12 people straight from the hotel onto the mountain in two and half minutes. The amount of times mornings have turned into mayhem with the disorganisation of assembling skis and heading to the chair lifts – that hassle is, thankfully, completely gone. Doubles available from £390 per night. For further information and bookings visit tschuggen.ch or call +41 81378 9999. Easy Jet flies to Zurich from London Gatwick. CHALET EDELWEISS, COURCHEVEL

BADRUTT’S PALACE HOTEL, ST. MORITZ

Walking into Courchevel’s Chalet Edelweiss, you are struck immediately by its most unique draw: at once you are in, without question, the most luxurious chalet in this exclusive location, but equally, what overwhelms you is a comforting sense of warmth and intimacy. A newly built, 3000sq/m model of Alpine perfection located directly on the Bellecote piste, the chalet’s interior is a lesson in timeless elegance and envelops you in a homely world of sumptuous furnishings in hues of biscuit and cream that contrast beautifully with its unsurpassable collection of contemporary art; you’ll question whether the guarding presence at the door of the indoor pool and spa area really can be a Dali: it can. Spoilt as you are inside the chalet, which unwinds seven floors upwards around a magnificent spiral stairway, one gaze out at the breathtaking panoramic views is sure to jolt your memory as to why you’re actually there – the skiing. Incorporating a 50sq/m ski-room complete with instructors on hand, Edelweiss has ski-in ski-out access, so you can be kitted out and on the piste within minutes exploring the Trios Valleys, the largest ski area in the world. And off the piste? Your wish is the chalet’s command. A recommended course of action would be to indulge your weary limbs on the spa floor, relaxing in the Hammam and sauna, or allowing the dedicated massage therapist to work out the stresses of the day before retiring to your palatial en-suite to glam up and emerge reenergized and ready for a glass of champagne or two at the chalet’s in-house nightclub. Always on hand to top up your glass, the staff display a marriage of attentiveness and discretion; ready when you need them and invisible when you don’t.

Overlooking the serene St Moritz lake, Badrutt’s Palace is perfectly located to enjoy the vistas – and facilities – of the surrounding Engadin Valley. This Swiss ski haven was, at one time, just a summer retreat. In the 1860s, no one wanted to brave the St Moritz winter, so Caspar Badrutt made a bet with five rich Englishmen that if they stayed for the winter and didn’t enjoy themselves, he would foot the bill. If they enjoyed themselves, however, they would pay and spread the word. Needless to say, Badrutt won the bet and word did indeed spread. Fast. The only difference now being that Badrutt’s Palace has kept advancing with the times, yet maintains its historic foundations. Despite its size and hints of its lavish past, there is no sense of vulgarity. It’s just pure beauty. badruttspalace.com

What was the brief for this property and who was the client? The project was for an international client. The brief was to create something interesting and layered, using lovely materials for the family’s London base, which reflected how they wanted to live when in London, that was different to anywhere else they might stay. What was it like when you first saw it? The property had not been touched in 20 years, so it needed to be completely gutted before we could begin to refurbish it. The staircase was in the wrong place, and there were not enough bedrooms. We were

converting two flats into one, so this meant all the services including gas, water and heating were still separate and had to be joined. There are several different styles here. What’s the story behind the wood paneling? The paneling in the hall is satinwood and bronze, with stone inset flooring. The paneling in the library is American black walnut with sycamore detailing, set in a herringbone pattern to offset the very square nature of the room. The floor is made from oak parquet de Versailles. And the pink bath? The daughter in the family wanted a pink room and 87

bathroom. We sourced the amazing mosaics behind the bath from Mesguich at Kensington Square and the underside of the free-standing bath is in Middleton Pink. What is your favourite feature? My favourite feature is the master bathroom, which features a beautiful monolithic bath made from Italian marble, which we commissioned expert stonemasons to hand cut, but there are wonderful details throughout the two storey flat.

How would you describe your own style? It is a cross between classic elegance and sumptuous living. Years ago you worked for Nicky Haslam. What did you learn from him? Everything! It was an amazing experience. He is a genius with great memory retention for details he has seen in rooms and buildings across the globe. 020 7751 4125 j-v-b.com 89

Legal force Marilyn Stowe is one of the country’s leading divorce lawyers, and she’s a television personality too. Absolutely catches up with her to discuss justice, families and The Archers Most divorce lawyers don’t end up on television. How did your stint on This Morning come about? I enjoy public speaking and have debated marriage at the Oxford Union. I have regularly appeared on provincial radio and TV over the years; but I’ve also done Richard and Judy and other national talk shows on TV. Sometimes the brief is tricky; I debated cohabitation with Baroness Deech on Radio 4 and the outcome of a Supreme Court case on BBC Breakfast. I’ve also handled PR as a solicitor on behalf of the Law Commission for reports on family law. ITV were looking for a very experienced family lawyer but also someone who was unafraid of the media who could explain things in a straightforward way. They called me out of the blue and interviewed me, and things went from there. Do you enjoy being on television? Yes I do, handling people’s problems is what I’m used to but I’ve very much enjoyed being in the studio and meeting celebrities and the people who run This Morning – who wouldn’t?! It’s a very professional outfit. You have also been involved in storylines for The Archers. Tell us more. I was recommended to the scriptwriters of the series and asked to devise the nastiest divorce scenario I could think of for one of the characters. So I had him running a private partnership with his girlfriend and hiving off business to it from his company, so depleting the company profits to reduce

the payout to the wife. Then the girlfriend turned on him! I’ve also advised the scriptwriters on Coronation Street when they ran a storyline about Peter Barlow, who was an alcoholic father and the grandfather turned up to obtain custody of the child. I suggested it would be a good idea for them to reach agreement about the child, to demonstrate settling is better than litigating and they took my advice. You are known to have a strong sense of justice. When did you first notice it Even before I qualified. I used to do voluntary work for the local CAB. In fact that’s where I first spoke to my husband who I’d seen around the courts. He had gone along to do a voluntary session too. I worked in partnership with him for many years and we ran free legal clinics at all our offices. When I set up my own firm I continued this and I offer free legal advice on my blog, www.marilynstowe.co.uk which is currently getting over 32,000 visits per month. I also acted for Sally Clark on a pro bono basis and obtained the medical report that freed her from her imprisonment when she was wrongly convicted of the double murder of her baby sons.

Most divorce lawyers are male, but many (most?) clients are female. Is this an issue? I think there was a problem not with clients but the lawyers; they found me a bit too hot to handle. Today I would say there are easily as many women as men lawyers and I don’t find there is a problem. How does working in family law impact on your own family? How do you find enough time for them? I always put my family first and still do so I was always around when my son was little and it was hard. However, now my son is a lawyer himself I am thinking of my firm first and growing and expanding it for posterity. You have been married for 30 years. What advice can you give people on making marriage work? My husband and I are tolerant of each other and respectful of each other’s careers. We don’t compete; we have grown and developed together for our mutual benefit. We are also always able to laugh together. His very dry sense of humour has saved many potentially tricky situations between us. stowefamilylaw.co.uk

PROPERTY

IN THEIR

OWN WORDS PHOTOGRAPHY: RICHARD CLARK

ow many people can say they genuinely love their job? That they know every day will present a new set of challenges? And that they will meet different and interesting people every working day? I may be in the minority, but yes, I definitely fall into this category. When I embarked on my property career some 11 years ago, I knew I would enjoy being ‘out and about’, rather than sitting behind a computer screen all day. However, I never really expected to enjoy what I do quite so much. The journey of buying and selling property is daunting for most people and I think I speak for most estate agents when I say that being the constant in that journey, supporting buyers and sellers throughout the process, is very rewarding indeed. Of course, there are challenges along the way, and estate agents can very often be in the firing line, but when you exchange contracts, it’s a great feeling. For the majority of people I work with, buying and selling their property is probably the biggest transaction of their lives – so it’s important to build a trustworthy relationship from the get-go. I consider myself lucky to be working in the estate agency profession – but I consider myself even luckier to be doing it in one of the most exciting neighbourhoods, in one of the most exciting cities in the world. I’ve worked in Notting Hill for almost five years now and the longer I stay here, the fonder I become. The people I meet on a daily basis are interesting and varied, ranging from young couples wanting to buy their first home right through to local developers looking for a new project. The architecture of Notting Hill is as exciting and varied as the people and amenities. One of my favourite properties

on the market at the moment is a first floor flat on Stanley Gardens overlooking the beautifully landscaped private gardens. The high ceilings, the distinct period features, the stunning views and the fabulous location mean it is a ‘ticks-all-the-boxes’ gem for a lucky purchaser. The 2012 property market was interesting, albeit unpredictable, largely due to the Olympics and Jubilee Celebrations. Now that life is back to normal, we expect a higher volume of sales in 2013. Despite a comparatively slower market, we saw average house prices increase by approximately 10%, a healthy capital gain for home-owners in the Notting Hill area. The spring market started incredibly strongly and we are anticipating the same for the 2013 property market, although without quite the same price hikes. Interest rates are likely to stay low, global uncertainties will continue and with an average of 13 buyers currently chasing every property on the market, competition will sustain house prices. This, along with restricted space for new building development in prime central London and in particular Notting Hill, will continue to challenge the buyer/property ratio. When you also consider the growing demand from both domestic buyers and international investors wanting a piece of the Notting Hill action, London will maintain its reputation as a safe haven for hard-earned money. With this in mind, I believe there will be a more modest and natural climb in house prices of approximately 5% throughout the year, with much of the growth taking place in the first half of the year. Needless to say, I am looking forward to an exciting and prosperous 2013. 020 7313 2890; marshandparsons.co.uk

William Tellwright has moved from John D Wood & Co.’s successful Kensington office where he has worked for 14 years as Head of Flat Sales. John D Wood & Co.’s Holland Park office is one of the company’s six branches in the Kensington & Chelsea borough which works particularly closely with the teams in the Kensington and Ladbroke Grove offices. William Tellwright comments: “Due to having worked in Kensington Church Street it is natural for me to move just down Holland Park Avenue to Portland Road to manage this office and concentrate on property sales within W11 & W14. I will continue to work closely with Matthew Harrop in Kensington as well as with Rollo Miles in our new Ladbroke Grove office.” John D Wood & Co. agents, once again took to the streets on one of the coldest days in December for the third annual D&G Charity Day in aid of the children’s charity Kids Company. Over 350 removal boxes were filled across the company’s 19 offices, weighing over 6.5 tonnes, to create Christmas hampers for London’s most vulnerable children. This years master removers Anthony Ward Thomas supported the charity day by providing lorries, removal men and boxes for the day to help transport donations from the D&G offices to the Kids Company Headquarters in Blackfriars. The day was also supported by The Keyholding Co who helped collect donations across their network. The items, ranging from packets of pasta to luxury boxes of chocolates, were packed into thousands of individual hampers by Douglas & Gordon staff, ready to be handed out at

looked after by Kids Company. As well as food and 750 toys, Douglas & Gordon collected over £10,000 from generous donors within Douglas & Gordon territory. Ivor Dickinson, Managing Director of Douglas & Gordon said: ‘Once again we have been amazed by the generosity of homeowners and businesses within D&G land. In previous years we have collected over 8.5 tonnes, but considering the recession it is no surprise that the total donations weighed in at 6.5 tonnes. We are still astonished by the amount received which will create hampers for thousands of Kids Company families most in need over Christmas. We would like to thank everyone who has generously donated to this worthwhile cause. For further information please contact Ivor Dickinson, Managing Director at Douglas & Gordon, on 020 7963 4600

WILLIAM TELLWRIGHT HEAD OF SALES IN HOLLAND PARK AT JOHN D WOOD & CO WTELLWRIGHT@JOHNDWOOD.CO.UK

RUTH BLOOMFIELD The residents of Notting Hill were given a little preChristmas gift by the government when controversial plans for a so-called Mansion Tax on properties worth £2m or more were ditched by Chancellor George Osborne. Estate agents from Ledbury Road to Pembridge Square breathed a collective sigh of relief at the news, but where does the status quo really leave us? One thing is certain. Prices in the area remain astronomically high. A five bedroomed house on Orme Square is currently on the market for £10m and you could spend more than £2m on a one-bedroomed crash pad on Kensington Park Gardens. Pity poor old Robbie Williams who has been house hunting locally and is finding the ‘astronomical’ for a family home” frightening - even though he’s worth £100m. ‘I don’t know how anybody can afford to live in London full stop,’ he said. However, according to forecasts by Savills estate agents, the wild growth in prime central London will settle this year with the market stagnating and no above-inflationary price increases expected until at least 2015. So bad luck to those who enjoy calculating the paper profit their properties are earning, but good news for those not keen on living in a ghetto of absentee oligarchs, where the local pub has been closed down to make way for another McMansion. 117

PROPER PRICING

In this age of instant information and virtual communication rather than face-to-face or on the telephone, it has never been more important to launch a property for sale at the correct price. Why? Because the internet has changed the way property is received by potential buyers, and more and more enquiries come directly by email from our website and the various property portals. This means there is less chance of a frank conversation between agent and applicant about a property which suits their needs but is, perhaps, over-budget. Rightmove recently conducted a survey which found out that 2/5 would-be buyers wouldn’t even request a viewing if they thought a property was overpriced. If this applies to the Kensington market then it is more important than ever to take advice and price your property appropriately, or run the risk of deterring interest from browsing parties. We have seen overpriced properties languishing on the market, eventually selling for less than they should, while those correctly priced attract good interest. Opened in 2001, it still enjoys a healthy reputation for serving excellent cocktails and exciting, eclectic Asian food in an incredible atmosphere, every day of the week.

FACT

Keith Rigby, Bective Leslie Marsh 020 7221 4805, keith.rigby@ bectivelesliemarsh.co.uk It’s amazing to think that just only 50 years ago streets like Colville Terrace and Powis Square were where notorious slum landlord Peter Rachman used to operate.

STREET

Nigel Hargreaves, Homesite 020 7243 3535, nhargreaves@homesite.co.uk Originally Queensway was named Black Lion Gate and was no more than a country lane across the surrounding fields. Its name was changed to Queens Road in honor of Queen Victoria who was born in nearby Kensington Palace.
