EDITOR’S LETTER
T
his month we were all excited to meet one of west London’s most glamorous women. Jade Parfitt is a supermodel who has been on the model circuit for long enough to have worked with some of the world’s best photographers and and come away with a tale to tell. She’s impressively poised and graceful, as you’d expect, and even by a model’s standards, she’s very tall indeed. We photographed her in a selection of extremely white clothes at one of Absolutely’s favourite places, Paradise By Way of Kensal Green. Fashion photography is quite a theme for us this month as we interview Juergen Teller about his big show at the ICA. Teller lives and works in W10 and is often to be found at Portobello Road’s Galicia, as he tells Lindsay Baker. More iconic images are to be found at the V&A, where the long-awaited David Bowie exhibition is set to open imminently – though you can preview it here first. Oh, and exciting plans are afoot to redevelop the the land under the Westway, so don’t forget to visit the exhibition outlining the scheme from 4 to 24 March at 6 Thorpe Close W10... Happy Easter

My Dog Sighs’ melancholic and often naive portraiture uses found materials including abandoned food cans – an unusual choice when considering traditional street art ideas of painting or pasted walls. Initially stemming from the desire to interact with the true public without causing permanent damage to public and private property, this transient work is not concerned with permanence or mass audience, but a beautiful desire to communicate quietly with a single participant. 133-137 Westbourne Grove, W11; londonwestbank.com

E SSAY TOPIC S
Notting Hill Editions is dedicated to the best non-fiction essayists and has developed a community around great writing. This month they are teaming up with 5x15 to host a special evening celebrating the diversity of their titles. Join them on 13 March at the Bush Theatre to hear Deborah Levy responding to George Orwell’s essay Why I Write, Lavinia Greenlaw on ideas of Elsewhere, Harry Mount on the essay form, Francis Wilson on the literary prize and Christian Lorentzen telling us how to set up a literary magazine in five difficult steps. nottinghill editions.com
As ‘Schwitters in Britain’ continues at the Tate, it’s nice to note that there’s also a Schwitters in Notting Hill angle. The German Dadaist artist may have famously spent his fi nal years in exile in the Lake District, but it’s less well known that he moved there from a boarding house in St Stephens Crescent W2... ‘Schwitters in Britain’ is at Tate Britain until 12 May. tate.org.uk
JE W EL IN THE CROW N Desire Fair will showcase work from over 120 exhibitors working in leather, acrylic, ceramics, paper, glass, copper and wood as well as more traditional silver, gold and platinum jewellery featuring gemstones, pearls, beads and enamelwork. There will be talks by various designers and makers as well as workshops with the London Jewellery School, plus a focus on innovative new work by recent graduates. 15-17 March, Conference and Events Centre, Hornton Street, W8. desirefair.com

WATCH THAT MAN Catherine Hales previews the longawaited David Bowie Is at the V&A
F
rom Ziggy Stardust via Aladdin Sane to the Thin White Duke, Bowie was – and remains – and extraordinary performer. Defying convention, he blazed a trail both in fashion and music that modern artists are still living in the wake of today. This exhibition, curated by Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh, contains over 300 objects including handwritten lyrics, original costumes, photography, film, Bowie’s own instruments and album artwork that have never before been brought together. Divided into four sections, the show starts with Bowie’s formative years when he was David Robert Jones, born in 1947 in Brixton, and his transition into David Bowie, musical icon. Experimentation with different styles varying from Mod to mime artist is presented through early photographs and his own sketches of costumes and stage designs leading up to the defining moment in 1969 of his first major hit Space Oddity. Bowie’s various personae were integral to his radical and anarchistic approach to performance. The genesis of Bowie’s most infamous incarnation Ziggy Stardust in 1972 has echoed through popular culture ever since and nothing better epitomises the androgynous alien creation than the original multi-coloured suit worn on Top of the Pops for his performance of Starman. This, as well as outfits
designed for stage characters Aladdin Sane and The Thin White Duke, will all be on display alongside costumes from The 1980 Floor Show (1973) and cover sleeves for The Man Who Sold The World. Immersive audiovisual presentations will show the singer’s most ambitious music videos and recently discovered footage of Bowie’s performance of Jean Genie on Top of the Pops in 1973. A separate room will display props and highlights from eighties favourite Labyrinth (1986) and feature film Basquiat (1996). The exhibition finishes with iconic images by photographers including Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts and John Rowlands, juxtaposed with a collage of projections demonstrating Bowie’s continuing legacy represented in fashion, music and contemporary visual and virtual culture today.

MY STYLE Lucy Enfield of children’s fashion boutique ilovegorgeous reveals her inspirations
Your favourite piece of clothing Boringly – but importantly – my black trousers from the Kooples. They see me through day and night, day after day. More fun but worn less is a floor-length vintage skirt. Dark brown with silver lurex, an unusual combination that looks fantastic.
Favourite piece of children’s clothing It changes as we design new collections but for this summer I think it is the block coloured Fab Dress. My favourite holiday destination Greece. That searing heat, the song of the cicadas, olive oil and long lunches on a shaded beach terrace with family and friends.
Favourite designer Vivienne Westwood. I used to wear her corsets and then got married in one with an enormous net skirt. Ridiculous but so much fun. Most treasured possession If I can’t say my kids, it has to be my glasses. I can see nothing without them and all things beautiful are not so without them. Style icon My mother. She never spent a lot of money on clothes but was always unfailingly glamorous and had a fabulous eye.
Most inspiring experience Living in India in my 20s surrounded by the colours and warmth of the incredible diverse culture there. It is just so vibrant. Favourite piece of art I bought a Elizabeth Lecourt when we first started ilovegorgeous. I absolutely love her work turning maps into dresses.

WHITE LIGHT
Pendle Harte meets supermodel Jade Parfitt to discuss catwalk personalities, shooting with Richard Avedon and favourite footwear Photography by Liam Duke Styling by Lynda Bell
J
ade Parfitt could never not have become a model. Standing six foot two in her Converse, she towers head and shoulders above anyone else, a blonde giant with an unlikely mix of the fragile and the Amazonian about her. She’s pale, almost translucent, with whispy blonde hair and improbably long legs. Arriving at Paradise by Way of Kensal Green for our shoot, she’s friendly and at ease, happy to be local and happy to chat while her hair is pulled into shape and her face made up, all of which she tolerates with clear professionalism. In the world of modelling, Parfitt is an old timer. At 34, she’s been in the industry for nearly 20 years and things have changed a lot. And from her point of view, starting out now doesn’t seem like an enviable position to be in. ‘There are just so many more models these days,’ she says. ‘The first fashion show
I did was Prada and you could name every person in the room – except me. Now there are just so many more and girls really have much more limited careers. You go to a fashion show now and half the girls can’t walk because they haven’t been given a chance to learn their trade before they’re booted out.’ If it sounds harsh, that’s
Cara Delevingne who’s not only really gorgeous but really fun too. And there’s Kristen McMenamy who’s come back, having had kids, and she’s really interesting. So, yes, personality was underrated but now it’s definitely back.’ Parfitt must have encountered more than a few personalites over the years, I venture. Who are the most memorable? ‘Oh there are lots,’ she says. ‘But definitely Richard Avedon. I am such a fan of his. I was so nervous about going to my first shoot with him and when I arrived at the studio he grabbed me and shouted ‘hi, my name’s Dick’ and put me at ease straight away. He was such a charismatic man and it was fun to be on set with him. I was honoured and lucky to be able to do a few shoots with him.’ Many of Avedon’s pictures are Parfitt’s favourite ever ones, including a famous shoot for The New Yorker with Parfitt and Esther de Jong – ‘a real iconic Avedon shot,’ she says.
“The first fashion show I did was Prada and you could name every person in the room – except me” because it is – Parfitt supposes that a new model only really has six months to prove herself, as distinct from the couple of years you could reckon with 20 years ago. ‘But what’s really coming back, I think, is personality, because that’s what people thought was missing. So you’ve got amazing models like

arfitt’s entrance into the world of modelling came not from a scout – though you’d imagine her to have stood out as a towering teenager (did we mention that she was tall?) but, less glamorously, through a competition on This Morning, in which her mother secretly entered her. The first that the 15-year old knew of it was when her mother arrived at school to pick up her daughter for a live TV appearance. How terrifying this must have been, I volunteer. ‘I was surprised,’ she admits. ‘I thought she’d gone mad,’ says Parfitt, who had never considered modelling. ‘I was scared about being on TV, obviously, but I liked drama and things like that so there was a part of me that was quite up for it.’ And of course, she was so much taller than the other teenagers, having shot up in height quite suddenly when she reached 14. ‘Oh, it’s that boring story of being a really gawky teenager and not feeling very pretty and then suddenly becoming a model,’ she says breezily, as if it were something we could all relate to. The prize for the This Morning competition was a contract with Models One, which propelled her straight into the international world of fashion, her first job being a shoot with Craig McDean for i-D and German Elle magazines. ‘I was probably quite annoying. There was a great team, with Pat McGrath and Eugene doing hair and make up and I remember grilling them with questions about every product they were using.’ She loved the pictures, though it took a bit of getting used to. ‘Craig was very sweet. It’s very different having your picture taken as a model – what looks like a relaxing picture could be quite an awkward position to hold.’ Parfitt is a long-standing west Londoner and we are shooting her at one of her favourite hang outs, Paradise. But ask her to describe her perfect day, and it’s not all about parties. ‘I like to go on really long walks in Richmond
Park, then go and eat somewhere really nice – like maybe here! I love long walks and lovely dinners. Parfitt is happy that she’ll be able to pick up her six year-old son from school later and cites her friend Jasmine Guinness’s toyshop Honeyjam as one of her favourite places to take him. Other days she likes shopping in Westbourne Grove, stopping at Matches and Ottolenghi, and local friends include Alice Temperley (‘our sons get on very well’) and shoe designer Zoe Lee. And what does she buy? ‘I’ve just had to rebuy my Acne Pistol boots because they were so worn out – I thought
I really should branch out and get something else but they are so comfy. It’s embarrassing admitting that.’ She’s started to work out lately, for the first time, at Equus in Knightsbridge – which she says is ‘fun’ – and also embarking on a new fashion blog for Baukjen (‘it’s easy because they have lovely clothes’). And with that, it’s time for Parfitt to get to work, keen to try on the Temperley dress that’s waiting for her. In her vertiginous heels, she dwarfs everyone in the room; Liam the photographer needs to stand on a stool. Ever professional, Parfitt poses with ease, looking beautiful and luminous. 37

SHOW AND TELLER As Juergen Teller’s pictures wow the ICA, Lindsay Baker meets the photographer at his W10 studio

he enormous Vivienne Westwood triptych at the entrance of Juergen Teller’s current ICA show, Woo!, may take some by surprise – it’s not often you see a septuagenarian posing nude in quite such a, well, graphic way. But those familiar with Teller’s work will take it in their stride – his pictures are famously anarchic, oddly humorous and frequently explicit, blurring the lines between art and fashion photography.
He doesn’t set out to shock, he assures me, when we meet for a chat at his printing studio, just to ‘see something I haven’t seen before.’ As for the Westwood nudes: ‘I’ve been photographing Vivienne for so long, and I’ve always been mesmerised by her,’ he explains in his Germanic lilt. ‘By what she’s thinking and how fantastic she looks. Her skin is so white and intriguingly fantastic, it made me wonder what she would be like to photograph naked. With
all the punk heritage that comes with her, she’s a complete icon in British culture.’ London is the 48-year-old photographer’s adopted home – he and his family live in a roomy warehouse property off Ladbroke Grove that doubles up as a studio. He is occasionally to be spotted propping up the bar at Galicia tucking into tapas, and says he loves the area, and the fact that it has retained plenty of its authentic charm. It’s hardly surprising that the grittiness appeals. This is, after all, the man who often prefers a down-at-heel setting for his work. In photography circles he is the master of the anti-aesthetic, the enemy of re-touching, the king of grunge, a subverter of glamour – and re-inventor of what defines fashion imagery. Certainly, this solid-looking, football-loving Bavarian has a refreshingly earthy approach. Literally so, in the case of the Kate Moss photo in which the world’s best-known supermodel reclines in a mucky wheelbarrow. ‘It felt right visually – I’m interested in life and how people are in real life. I can be very cruel and humorous and serious and silly. I think I have a relatively wide range – but I think that’s how life is.’

He seems to inspire great trust in subjects in his commercial work too. Over the past couple of decades he has been responsible for some of the industry’s biggest campaigns – among them Westwood, Marc Jacobs and Celine. For his well-known Posh-in-a-bag campaign for Marc Jacobs, he somehow convinced Victoria Beckham to climb into an enormous shopping bag and pose with only her legs visible, poking out of the top. Having studied photography in Munich, Teller arrived in London in 1986 where he soon found himself contributing to The Face and i-D. By the early 90s he was working on commercial jobs, regularly flying Concord to New York in order to photograph the supermodels of the era. Rather than settling into this life of luxury and high-octane glamour, though, Teller had an almost allergic reaction to it, and it seems he is still ambivalent about the fashion industry, despite his top-dog position. ‘I’m not interested in status. I see the complexities of fashion and I want to have fun with it – the idea of dressing up is fun.’ If anything, his rebellious attitude endears him further to an industry
that has a soft spot for a maverick. Teller works with film rather than digitally, and unlike more or less every other photographer working in fashion, he rarely retouches his pictures, even though the scenarios are often elaborate, set-up fantasies, ‘Perfection’ does not interest him, he says. ‘I have no connection to that at all. I find those photographs boring. And I don’t think it’s necessarily healthy for women to be under this immense pressure to look a certain way. I look more into what kind
‘It’s not about photographing subjects and then ticking them off and moving on to the next one, like a celebrity photographer. It’s more about my state of mind and who belongs to my universe.’ Over the years he has occasionally photographed his children – he has one daughter, now 15, with his ex, stylist Venetia Scott, and a son with his wife, art dealer Sadie Coles. But, he says, he mostly leaves the holiday snaps up to his wife, otherwise he starts ‘thinking’ when he should be just ‘being’. In recent years he has taken more to shooting landscapes that are contemplative in mood – he shot a series of pictures in the forest near his homeland in Germany featuring his mother. And he and his wife have bought a second home in Suffolk, which he loves. Sounds like an idyllic life. Is he a happy person, I wonder? ‘I’m a complicated character, almost melancholic, and so I feel a responsibility to see the ridiculous and funny and difficult sides of life – because life is complex.’
In photography circles he is the master of the anti-aesthetic, the enemy of re-touching, the king of grunge

of person they are. I put myself in my photos as a slightly overweight man, and I’ve photographed people of all different sizes.’ You can’t help noticing that the same people crop up again and again in his photos – Kate Moss, Vivienne Westwood, William Eggleston, Charlotte Rampling, Kirsten McMenamy. The fact is, he likes photographing his friends.

INDIAN VIBE Aashni Shah of Aashni & Co tells Absolutely about bringing Indian fashion to Ledbury Road
AASHNI2.indd 47
19/02/2013 19:04
The world is oblivious to much of the new and upcoming talent from India, which led to a need to build Aashni & Co Tell us how Aashni & Co. came about At the heart of the Aashni & Co journey is a vision to introduce a fresh and current reflection of Indian fashion and design. A western understanding of Indian fashion is often crippled by the stereotype of being very ethnic. The world is oblivious to much of the new and upcoming talent from India which led to a need to build Aashni & Co. It fills a void and acts as a vehicle to truly reflect the diversity, dynamic nature and universal accessibility of Indian design. And what is your background? I grew up in Bombay and was always fascinated by culture, people, personality and aesthetic. The urge to be creative was rooted in my love of film, and I came to London to pursue this. I was an editor by profession and freelanced occasionally as an assistant director for feature films. In spite of working here for a number of years I always missed the rich culture of India. In particular I pined for the fashions I had grown up with, and was confused as to why awareness of their beauty was limited to India itself. Transferring my love for creating and curating into the fashion world with a love for business manifested organically into Aashni & Co.
LEFT: INTERNATIONAL STYLING WITH AN INDIAN SOUL – SABYASACHI BY SABYASACHI RIGHT: HANDCRAFTED ACCESSORIES
How would you describe Aashni & Co’s style? Both discreet and extravagant. Luxury is not defined by how big or impressive something is. Aashni & Co. champions exquisite workmanship in fashion, whether it is in understated chic or statement glamour. A woman should make ample room for both. What sets Indian designs apart from everyone else? I would say that the exquisite craftsmanship and play with colours incorporated within both western and eastern silhouettes - whether a tailored blazer, dress or a traditional sari and lehenga (skirt) is something unique that the talent from India offers up. Who is the typical Aashni & Co. woman? She has cultural soul and is definitely somebody who doesn’t shy away from her heritage. She embraces the traditional while making it current. The typical Aashni & Co. woman is defined more by her attitude than her aesthetic. She has no inhibition in her choices, isn’t intimidated by trend or the need to conform and can easily transition her catwalk couture into city girl comfort. Who are your personal favourite designers? The Sabyasachi RTW line is my go-to for everyday wear and I can’t resist Manish Malhotra when I feel the need

for some glamour. I love Alexander Wang for comfort chic and rely on Philip Lim and Hemut Lang for their tailoring and sharp aesthetics. For colour and play I have fashion fallen head over heels for Mary Katrantzou and Peter Pilotto. Why did you choose Ledbury Road for the shop? The area has a beautiful mix of character and a definite sense of the different. That is something I feel reflects the essence of the store perfectly. The more relaxed feel of the area compared to the chaos of central London provides us with the luxury of creating a more personal and intimate experience for visitors to the store. What are plans for Aashni & Co. in the future? With the collections in-store being so well received by visitors from around the UK and internationally as well as London shoppers, the next step was naturally to launch Aashni & Co. e-commerce. You will be able to shop collections online with us by April. Opening up further stores is something I definitely envisage for the future, with the next Aashni & Co. destination likely to be France. FIT CLUB
Absolutely quizzes W10 Performance’s fitness guru Jean Claude Vacassin on the truth behind the workouts How can W10 performance improve my life? W10 Performance helps people to improve their health and fitness. You will get good advice on exercise and nutrition in an approachable but focused environment. We have a small membership base; we like it that way and so do our members as they receive wholehearted attention from a highly qualified and dedicated team. What if I don’t have time to get fit? The majority of our members all have very high-pressured jobs and lives with very little time. There’s always a way to work in training. To a degree, you have to make time. Will I actually see results? Like anything, you get out what you put in. All our members here have one thing in common, they are serious and committed to getting fit. Whether you’re in here
to get stronger or drop fat, we will help people to achieve their goals if they are dedicated. What is W10’s philosophy? Eat accordingly, train honestly and take more time to relax, wind down and recover. Can you tell us one of your success stories? Eighteen months ago a woman came to us having suffered with back and knee pain most of her life and had never done any real exercise. Now, 18 months down the line she is three stone lighter, pain free and registered to run a triathlon in early 2013. What is the most commonly held misconception about fitness? Cardio is the best way to loose fat and carbs are bad for you.
And if you can only do one thing to improve your fitness, what should it be? Everyone is different and we would recommend any changes on a individual basis, particularly when it comes to nutrition. But, in general, people need to go back to basics: eat more wholefoods (and less refined or processed varieties), work on improving sleep quality and exercise more specifically according to their individual goals and body type. S
pring is on the way and after a cold wet winter, one thing that suffers is our skin. It’s time to freshen up that dull complexion – so why not take a visit to Peach on the Hill and let them do the hard work for you? This spring, Peach have some very special events planned, with detailed skin analysis with the Visia skin photographic system and personal make-up consultations by a top Jane Iredale mineral makeup makeup artist. No gimmicks, no hard sell: just honest answers to your questions. Karen has worked in the area for 17 years and seen the industry develop. Now at Peach on the Hill she is keen to push the boundaries of skincare, while keeping it all non-invasive. And as testimony to her talents, she has clients from all over London as well as Dorset, Wiltshire and all over the world, who return to Peach for what
they believe are the best facials anywhere. Peach was recently crowned Salon of the Year 2012 by the International Institute of Anti-Ageing for the UK, which was a very exciting achievement.
Signature facials At Peach, signature facials are all you are looking for in a skin treatment, whether treating photo-ageing, congestion, rosacea or just maintenance. Tailored to your skin’s needs, when you arrive Peach therapists will help you achieve your own natural radiance by cleansing and feeding where appropriate (Peach have a good reputation for thorough extractions where applicable). Yet whatever your skin will have done, you are guaranteed that when you leave you will not look red and blotchy – just glowing and radiant – and a couple of days later, the full effects really show.
Beautiful skin starts from within
important as what you apply topically. Karen at Peach believes that working along side the Advanced Nutrition Programme their products can be combined to effectively target skin health. High-quality supplements can have a role to play in helping to ensure that you have a healthy, radiant complexion. Peach also offers endermolgie cellulite treatments, IPL hair removal and photo rejuvenation, CACI non surgical face lifting and medical needling. They will combine any of these to give the most personalised treatment for the client.

Education REPORT Updates from local schools
NEW OPENING
Absolutely takes a look at the new Kew House School, opening its doors in September this year What do you do if you run two highly successful and oversubscribed preparatory schools and the parents of your pupils urge you to open a coeducational secondary school to continue their children’s education up to the age of 18? For Maria Gardener of London Preparatory Schools Ltd, which runs Ravenscourt Park and Kew Green Prep Schools, the answer was clear – do as they asked. So it is that, in September 2013, a new independent secondary school will open in west London. It is called Kew House School.
WHAT? The school promises to be pioneering and modern, while retaining the best of the traditional values demonstrated at the two preparatory schools, founded in 1991 and 2004. Key to its success will be a rich and broad curriculum, taught in a relatively small, nurturing learning environment where individual talents are identified and developed. In the school’s first year, places will be available in Years 7, 8 & 9. Through an innovative selection process, KHS is seeking to attract intelligent pupils with a confident sense of identity and an original approach to learning, problem solving and creativity. The result will be a school that respects each student as a valuable individual, and works in partnership with pupils and parents to promote each pupil’s success, welfare and happiness: in short, Kew House School.
WHERE? Kew House School is a simple red-brick building incorporating modern, open-plan interior design with state-of-the-art facilities. There’s ample outdoor space and the school is in close proximity to Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre and close to Kew Bridge and the River Thames. For more information, please visit kewhouseschool.com OPEN EVENTS: Thursday 14 March, 7pm Monday 25 March, 9.30am Tuesday 30 April, 7pm Admissions assessments are currently available for Years 7, 8 & 9. RECIPE PIGEON BREASTS WITH FENNEL SERVES 4
This is an easy, yet sophisticated dish that Alison’s son Arthur created one evening and has become a family staple. You can substitute chicken breasts if pigeon is not for you. It is perfect served with Puy lentils and rice. Pack of pigeon breasts from the butcher or farmers’ market or four chicken breasts sliced into smaller pieces 1 large fennel bulb 2 garlic cloves (optional) 2 slices butter 2 tablespoons olive oil A handful chopped flat leaf parsley A handful chopped fennel tops Salt and black pepper • 1⁄2 glass dry white wine (optional) • 1⁄2 glass vegetable or chicken stock
SCHOOL FOODIES
Fox Pot – From the Kitchens of Notting Hill is a new cookbook compiled by parents at W8’s Fox Primary School
F
amously one of the area’s most popular primary schools, W8’s Fox Primary’s fundraising activities go beyond the usual cake sales and sponsored walks. Published this month is Fox Pot, a new and unique cookbook
celebrating the eclectic tastes of Notting Hill. It contains delicious, multicultural dishes from local families alongside recipes from chefs including Jamie Oliver, Yotam Ottolenghi, Bill Granger, Valentine Warner and Sally Clarke. All proceeds from book sales go to the school and its charities.
1 Peel and finely slice the garlic and fennel. Reserve the feathery fennel tops. 2 Put the oil and butter in the pan and bring to a medium heat, add the fennel and garlic. Let them soften, stirring repeatedly. When completely soft and translucent, season with salt and pepper. Re- move the fennel from the pan and place on a warm plate. 3 Put the pigeon or chicken breasts in the pan with a little more oil. Put the heat up a touch. Once the breasts are nearly cooked (after five minutes or so), season and pour in the wine and stock. Let it bubble and reduce slightly. 4 Serve the pigeon breasts on top of a bed of fennel sprinkled with the parsley and fennel tops.
Fox Pot – From the Kitchens of Notting Hill will be available for purchase from 25 March for £20 at Waterstones, Recipease, Lutyens & Rubinstein, and other local stores.

C
hocolate is more than just a tasty treat. It’s much more than a gourmet delight, however good it tastes. Especially at this time of year, chocolate is a designer accessory in its own right and it comes in limited-edition collections, as if it were part of the fashion world. Which it sort of is, for Easter 2013. Not only are a host of big name chocolatiers competing to create the most delicious, the most exotic, the most surprising and the most luxurious blends of the brown stuff, but now designers who are not normally part of the chocolate world are getting involved too.
Thanks to Ledbury Road’s Melt, the fusing of fashion and chocolate is even facilitated by geography. Melt is located handily close to Matches, Wolf and Badger and Diane von Furstenberg as well as some of London’s most chichi childrenswear stores, making it an obvious stop on the fashion trail. The boutique’s fashion-led approach to chocolate has resulted in a successful and ongoing collaboration with Celia Birtwell and now, inspired by London’s
Faberge Big Egg Hunt in 2012, Melt has teamed up with the bold and beautiful of Notting Hill and asked them to create their own Easter eggs for 2013. Creative local luminaries including the Ledbury’s chef, Brett Graham, jewellery designer Dinny Hall, parfumier Lyn Harris of Miller Harris, Jean Cazals, food photographer of the year 2012, Nikki Tibbles of gorgeous florist Wild at Heart and designer and food writer Sophie Conran will all be designing their own Easter eggs. Their drawings will then be immortalised in luxurious chocolate by Melt’s head chocolatier Chika Watanabe before being displayed at Melt’s Ledbury Road store. Think crunchy honeycomb, floral scents and stunning intricate designs. Exclusively, just five eggs of each design will be made and available to purchase (from £75) in time for the start of the festivities. Lynn Harris’s egg, pictured above, is inspired by her new perfume launch. She says: ‘Le petit grain is one of my favourite raw materials from the orange tree – it gives an interesting twist to the Melt milk chocolate and is very appropriate for Easter’.

INSPIRED TO TRY YOUR OWN? Here’s some guidance from Melt
You will need ten 6cm-high egg moulds to make these. You can serve the eggs in egg cups, if you like, which is how we package them at Melt. Makes 10 x 20g eggs 1 quantity of tempered milk chocolate or dark chocolate (please see below) Polish ten 6cm-high egg moulds with cotton wool (this makes the chocolate shiny). With a ladle, pour about 300g of the tempered chocolate into themoulds. Tap the side of the moulds to get rid of any air bubbles, then turn them upside down over the bowl of chocolate and tap again. Turn the
moulds the right way up and scrape off excess chocolate with a metal scraper. Leave in the fridge for a few minutes until the chocolate is half set – it should still feel soft but not sticky. Repeat the whole process with more chocolate – you will end up using about 200g chocolate on the eggs in total. Leave in the fridge to set completely. Turn the eggs out of the moulds. Put a frying pan with a flat base over a medium heat and leave until it is hot – you should still be able to touch it, but only just. Briefly press each egg half on the surface of the pan until the chocolate softens on the edges. Press 2 halves together until they stick – this should take about 5 minutes. Place the eggs in an airtight container and store at room temperature.
CHOCOLATIER DAMIAN ALLSOP is best known for his water ganache, an ingenious creation (and a secret recipe) that uses simple water instead of cream and butter without sacrificing creaminess and flavour. Allsop makes frequent appearances at Westbourne Grove’s Alexeeva & Jones, holding tasting sessions and giving talks (though he never reveals the secret). Absolutely snatched five minutes with him. You have a unique recipe that substitutes water for cream without losing out on flavour. How did you come upon that? After tasting a new chocolate I made a mousse with it and when I tasted it, I realized that I had lost the actual flavour of the chocolate. I needed to work with a non-flavoured liquid; water. When I worked out the chocolate water ganache, I understood flavour on a different level. It keeps on suprising me.
Chocolatier Damian Allsop is known for his molecular approach. With 20 years experience as a pastry chef in the kitchens Gordon Ramsay and Giorgio Locatelli, among others, he
How would you describe the role of texture in chocolate? The texture is a vehicle for flavour. The softer the texture, the quicker the flavour release. I use texture to control the way the flavours evolve: making some appear first, and slowing down others so you taste them later.
You are involved in demonstrations at Alexeeva and Jones – how is that going? Brilliant! They have such a beautiful, unique shop that truly supports the small artisan chocolatier and I love talking chocolate. It offers us an opportunity to educate and have fun – we are talking about doing a whisky/chocolate matching there soon. What does the future hold for chocolate? It’s very exciting. It’s only going to get better as different people make chocolate on a smale scale, discovering unique profiles.. I see similarites with the fine wine market; serving an ever more informed, educated, discerning and hungry public. 69

HOW TO TEMPER CHOCOLATE 1. Melt the chocolate
Finely chop 500g dark, milk or white chocolate. It doesn’t matter exactly what cocoa solids percentage it is, but be sure to stick to 64–70 per cent for dark chocolate, 36–40 per cent for milk chocolate and 30–35 per cent for white. Put 375g of the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl and place in the microwave. Heat it in 30-second bursts at medium power, opening the microwave door and stirring the chocolate with a rubber spatula between each heating, until it has reached the temperature indicated on the chart below (check it with a digital thermometer). Using a microwave is the quickest method.
2. Seed the chocolate
Add the remaining 125g finely chopped chocolate to the melted chocolate a little at a time – this process is known as seeding. Slowly stir after each addition of chopped chocolate until it has melted, and use a digital thermometer to check the temperature of the liquid chocolate until it has reached the temperature indicated on the chart below. You may not need all of the
remaining cold chocolate to bring the chocolate to the correct temperature. If the melted chocolate has reached the desired temperature and still contains some lumps of solid chocolate, use an electric hand blender to smooth it out.
correct temperature. If it starts to cool and thicken while you are using it, you can microwave it for a few seconds to keep the temperature constant. If it goes completely out of temper, you will have to repeat the entire tempering process.
3. Reheat the chocolate
Chart: Temperatures for tempering chocolate
This is the tricky part – the chocolate needs to be heated by just 2–4˚C. Place the bowl in a microwave and heat it at medium power for just a few seconds. Check the temperature using a digital thermometer, following the chart below. Stir well to finish the tempering process.
4. Test the chocolate
To test that the chocolate has been tempered correctly, drizzle a small amount on to a palette knife or a piece of baking parchment. It should set hard in 5 minutes and be shiny and glossy. Check the chocolate is ready by touching it: if only the top layer has set, the cocoa butter underneath has separated and the chocolate is not tempered. If this is the case, then the whole process needs to be repeated. Use the tempered chocolate immediately, so it is at the

Ukai (oo-kaaee), our name, is inspired by the traditional method of river fishing practiced for some 1,300 years using Cormorant birds to catch sweetfish. Spawned in 2006, Ukai has quickly become a favourite amongst sushi lovers in the London area, with its first outlet in trendy Portobello. Ukai offers a culturally rich Japanese experience in a contemporary setting. Due to interest, many of its various Japanese inspired products including flower teas (which blossoms in front of your eyes), delicate incense and a variety of stylish tableware are now available to be purchased.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
The Rum Kitchen 6-8 All Saints Road W11 therumkitchen.com
O
pened in the traditionally quiet time after the new year, the Rum Kitchen instantly became the type of place you need to fight to get to. Forget not booking. When you get there, it’ll be packed. We visited on a freezing midweek night that should really be spent indoors, walked down an eerily deserted All Saints Road without passing a soul and arrived to find the restaurant full and buzzing. The Rum Kitchen’s Caribbean theme is a fitting legacy for the site that was famously at the heart of London’s West Indian community as the Mangrove for two decades from the late 1960s. There may be nothing political about the new incarnation, but it’s likely that the site has seen a few Guinness punches and saltfish fritters in its time. And now they’re back again in Ladbroke Grove-born chef Darren Williamson’s menu of Caribbean staples and the bar’s proud collection of nearly 150 different types of rum.
So it’s cocktails, of course, to start – Grog (‘the pirates’ choice,’ we’re told) comes in a beer jug as the spiciest and manliest of the selection, while a coconuty and fruity Rumbustion is all crushed ice, froth and pineapple slices. Our starters were saltfish fritters and salt and chilli squid, both of them high class fare. A main course of seafood gumbo with cornbread was spicy and intense, generous on the seafood and accompanied by winningly sweet, cakelike toasted cornbread. Jerk lamb cutlets came with sweet guava sauce and ‘island
wedges’ that had a Mediterranean feel, while sides of jerk chicken wings and rice and peas were properly peppery. Style-wise, the place cleverly fuses a beach shack feel (naked coloured lightbulbs, painted driftwood panels, even corrugated iron) with an urban, New York sharpness. The soundtrack is reggae, of course, with a mix of dub, funk and calypso and the downstairs bar (rum only) is open to members only after 10.30pm. Predictably, memberships are highly coveted, so if you’re a fan of afterhours rum punch, don’t delay. 73

U
kai is a Portobello Road staple, popular for its high quality food. Inside it’s long and dark, the kind of place you can come alone and read over a quick meal, or take your time. But don’t be fooled by the informal feel. Ukai is a proper high class eaterie, run by expert staff with impressive credentials. Portobello Road was the site of the fi rst Ukai and it soon spawned several sister sites and a popular catering and delivery service too. First off on our lunchtime visit, there’s jasmine tea in a heavy stone pot, followed by steaming
bowls of warming miso soup. Staff suggested that we try the special salmon tartar with chives, mango and fi sh eggs, which arrives next, a careful fusion of sweet, sharp mango and soft, silky fi sh, topped with salty fi sh eggs. Spicy tuna sashimi was spicy indeed, and grilled eel nigiri came slightly warm. A Ukai salad consisted of rocket, lettuce, soy beans, various crunchy seeds and special Ukai dressing, a healthy and tasty concoction. All of it is interestingly textured, soy flavours softened with sweet mirin and the hand of an expert sushi chef clearly detectable. Healthy, tasty and exotic too – what a faultless recipe.

n Brazil, they say that God created the world in six days and on the seventh he made Rio de Janeiro. It may be a well-worn adage, but as the city prepares to take its place on the world stage as the host of the 2014 World Cup and the Olympic Games in 2016, the sentiment has never been more appropriate. This is Brazil’s moment. In just a few months it has been named as the world’s sixth largest economy, brought samba music to Stratford during the Olympics closing ceremony and starred in a documentary series alongside Michael Palin. Not before time, our eyes are being opened to the many different faces of this emerging nation. You can experience the sights, sounds and colours of Rio, the modernist architecture of Brasilia and the beaches of Santa Catarina in just a few days. There could hardly be a better time for Brazil to establish itself as a go-to destination for sun, sports and spending. Rio is at the heart of the country’s regeneration. It is in the grip of
modernisation. Money is being pumped into airports and hotels in anticipation of tourist numbers doubling to over three million a year by 2016. My first stop is the historic Copacabana Palace Hotel. With creamy Art Deco features and views across the glittering Atlantic, it’s easy to see why the world’s most famous faces choose to stay here.
On its doorstep is Copacabana beach, its celebrated golden curve of sand lined with lively bars, cafes and teenagers tight-rope walking between palm trees. Next-door is Ipanema beach. Everywhere you turn in this city, you come face-to-face with another world-famous landmark.
At 396 metres tall, Sugarloaf Mountain is perhaps the most imposing. The twostage cable car ride to its summit is not for the faint-hearted. But stick with it. On a clear day, the views are the star of the show. Guanabara Bay spreads out below. Islands are dotted along the horizon. Better still, time your visit to coincide with the sunset – as we did – and catch a glimpse of Rio’s most famous resident. For, as the sky darkens, Christ the Redeemer appears through the mist on an adjacent mountain; arms outstretched, illuminated by a blazing purple halo. It’s an unforgettable sight. My next stop couldn’t have been more different: the luxurious resort of Ponta dos Ganchos, a 90-minute flight south of Rio in the state of Santa Catarina. The first thing to remember when staying here is to leave your watch at the door. ‘We don’t take any notice of time’, explains manager Miguel Garcia. It’s this philosophy of indulgence that runs through the resort; from the tencourse breakfast tasting menu to the absence of checkout times and attentive staff who will attend to your every whim.

With a population of 400,000 – but the infrastructure to cope with over a million in high season – this can feel like a ghost town, albeit a fascinating one. It became popular with South American tourists a decade ago, after one of their beloved soap operas was set here. Visitors also pour into the neighbouring trendy beach resort of Jurere – which boasts a house owned by supermodel Gisele – and the historic town of San Antonio, with its lively municipal market. But no trip to Brazil is complete without discovering the work of architect and national treasure Oscar Niemeyer, who died late last year. So, with a heavy

It’s fascinating – even more so if you allow yourself to get lost. Arty shops and cafés have popped up below residential super blocks. Buildings are dotted with geometric tiles by artist Athos Bulcão. It’s all in stark contrast to the brilliant white, modernist buildings that make up Niemeyer’s utopian ‘triangle of power’ in the city centre. LES ETANGS DE COROT, PARIS This spectacularly scenic retreat not far from Versailles is the inspiration behind the early works of Jean-Baptiste Corot, forefather of Impressionism, and it was here that his good friend Claude Monet paid him regular visits. Guests can now follow in the footsteps of the Impressionist masters and develop their artistic talents under guidance from esteemed local artist Agnes Monteilhet. It would be more than fair to say that Agnes, who has studied and exhibited at a variety of prestigious Parisian institutions, is truly passionate about her subject, which makes her the ideal conduit for the creative d’Avray atmosphere. A weekend at Les Etangs is luxuriously serene and feels both indulgent and peaceful as you rest, nestled in the charming 200year old artists’ hamlet of Ville d’Avray. The serenity of the setting emanates throughout; the hotel and the bedrooms are magical. Each one is named after an artist who painted there, with a beautiful colour palette in bedroom and bathroom, giving a calming and unique feel.

THE DOLDER GRAND, ZURICH Think of Zurich and you might think bankers, watches and chocolate. But art? In fact, the city has a vibrant art scene and at The Dolder Grand art is very much on the agenda. This city landmark has been perched above Lake Zurich since 1899. After a fouryear restoration led by Sir Norman Foster it reopened in 2008 as a thoroughly modern masterpiece. Two wings with sweeping glass facades now flank the hotel’s main building, with its fairy-tale steeples and lofty wooden ceilings, artfully mixing the traditional and contemporary. The Dolder’s owner, Urs Schwarzenbach’s museum-worthy private art collection – there are around 130 pieces – adorns the walls. An enormous Warhol panel hangs above the onyx reception desk, depicting everything from Marilyn Monroe to Chairman Mao, while a Dali greets you at the entrance to the two Michelin-star restaurant. And art is all over the city. From Chagall’s exquisite stained-glass windows in the 9th-century Gothic abbey, Fraumünster,
THE DOLDER GRAND, ZURICH
and Giacometti’s murals at the police headquarters, to the street art of Zurich West, the former industrial quarter where old warehouses have been converted into shops and bars. The stately Kunsthaus is the venue for fine arts – from the golden age of Dutch painting to sculpture by Cy Twombly – while the Kunsthalle is a bastion for international contemporary art. And alternative art spaces are opening all the time, such as artist-run Dienstgebäude and Karma International. After a hard day on the art trail, head to the Dolder’s outstanding spa, passing a joyful Niki de Saint Phalle sculpture on route. Don’t miss the outdoor hot tub for spectacular views over the city, and the fabulously curvy Fernando Botero bronze. ABSOLUTELY | FOOD A ND TR AV EL THE HOTEL If you’ve ever yearned to call a castle home, this is the hotel for you. Bovey Castle is a ravishing resort set in a 400 acre private estate within Dartmoor National Park. A lavish neo-Elizabethan manor house built by the W.H. Smith (the stationers) family in 1907, Bovey Castle exudes opulence and grandeur. With a blockbuster interior including the Cathedral Room – featuring a carved stone chimney, minstrel’s gallery and ornate plaster ceilings – plus an elegant Adam drawing room, guests can indulge in a Downton Abbey lifestyle both inside and out. Overlooking the championship riverside 18 hole golf course embraced by the dramatic moor, there’s a range of country pursuits including archery, clay pigeon shooting, tennis and bracing walks, plus an indoor Deco-style swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and a separate holistic spa. A daily falconry display featuring avian marvels such as Merlin, a huge, handsome but not-so-smart European owl and Rosie, a disagreeable Bald Eagle, is top class entertainment.
Bovey Castle, Devon THE SPA
THE BEDROOM Greet the morning by throwing open the leaded windows, taking in the glorious vista and breathing diamond sharp moorland air. Each of Bovey Castle’s 79 bedrooms and suites and 14 lodges guarantee an exceptional start to the day. As befitting the surroundings, Castle Valley rooms are decorated with restrained woodland and floral prints, sumptuous lined curtains and classic furnishings. Beds are supremely comfortable and the wooden chest containing a variety of beverages and fine china with fresh milk provided is a welcome addition.
THE RESTAURANT Dinner and breakfast is served in the main restaurant, the elegant Edwardian Grill decorated in Art Deco style enhanced by Chinoiserie wall covering. A fine dining menu changes with the seasons and promises West Country produce. The house wine is excellent. The Castle Bistro offers more meals and snacks (there is a special children’s menu) in relaxed contemporary surroundings. And what could be nicer than Afternoon Tea (think scones with lashings of jam and Devon cream) taken outside on the terrace. A glass of Champagne perhaps?
Dartmoor meets Delhi at Bovey Castle’s relaxing Sundãri Spa. Meaning ‘beautiful woman’ in Sanskrit and created by supermodel Christy Turlington, Sundãri comprises an exclusive collection of Ayurvedic treatments and products based on ancient Indian healing. There’s certainly a hint of mystic spirituality with scented candles flickering in the relaxation room and around the sunken bath set on a plinth in the largest of the six treatment rooms. With the emphasis on massage, the majority of facials and body treatments are conducted using a range of edible sounding products such as the Rooibos Tea, Honey and Fruit Brightening Enzyme Facial (60 minutes, £100). You’ll emerge looking good enough to eat.
GETTING THERE A half hour journey by road (the hotel can arrange this) from Exeter St Davids Station, where regular trains run from Paddington.
PRICE TAG Bovey Castle is a member of Pride of Britain Hotels – a consortium of 45 privately-owned independent British hotels and spas. Rooms start from £249 per night based on two sharing. 0800 089 3929; prideofbritainhotels.com. 85

BASIN INSTINCTS Reclaimed bathrooms are stylish and varied, says Melanie Molesworth in her new book Junk Style
R
eclaimed antique bathroom fittings are highly appealing to junk shoppers. Castiron roll-top bathtubs with claw feet are far superior to flimsy modern acrylic versions. The same goes for old porcelain sinks set in metal stands, huge chrome daisy-head shower attachments and Victorian toilets with their original high-mounted cisterns. And a few small touches can make all the difference to
existing plain white fittings: swap the taps for reconditioned originals, add some down-toearth junk-style accessories, whitewash the walls – and all that remains for you to do is turn on the water, get into the tub, lie back and relax. Infinite variety is available to those who are prepared to scour salvage yards and specialist outlets at home and abroad in pursuit of something unique. Stumbling on an old bathtub used
as a cattle trough in the middle of a field is less likely to happen these days, but you may still be lucky. Re-enamelling is always possible if your tub is otherwise in good shape. Devotees of junk style don’t mind having a sink, bathtub and toilet that don’t match, and don’t object to using a garden table as a washstand, as long as the spirit of casual simplicity reigns. So combine styles and designs according to what’s available and what looks best. 91

Once you have established the look of the room with its main fi xtures and fittings, try to keep everything else as simple and uncluttered as possible. Bathrooms need a surprising amount of storage space in order to maintain their clean lines. Pieces of furniture imported from elsewhere in the house can all fi nd a home here: store
lockable medicine chests, small mirrored cabinets and tile-backed washstands. For authenticity’s sake, combine them with a porcelain or enamel pitcherand-bowl set and piles of soft cotton hand-towels. Other classic bathroom accessories, such as glass shelf units, mirrors, tooth mugs, toothbrush holders, soap dishes and chrome heated towel
A few small touches can make all the difference to existing plain white fittings: swap the taps for reconditioned originals, add some down-to-earth junk-style accessories and whitewash the walls toiletries in a spare kitchen cabinet, hang bathrobes on an unused peg rail brought up from the pantry, or pile towels into an empty blanket box from the bedroom. Traditional-style items of bathroom furniture are as useful as ever, so when out shopping keep your eyes open for old
rails, also appear from time to time in flea markets. Otherwise, improvise with a piece of driftwood as a bathroom shelf, a gold-framed drawing room mirror above the sink, an old glass tumbler to hold the toothbrushes, a floral-patterned china saucer as a soap dish, or a basic wooden trestle as a towel rail. Similarly,
if you can’t find a bath mat made in the old-fashioned way from duckboard slats or cork, use a small hearth rug instead. Flowers can give as much pleasure in the bathroom as in any other room in the house, so place a small vase on the washstand or bathroom shelf, or hang up a bunch of lavender to keep the air fresh. Such small details will enhance the sensual pleasure of your bathroom. usually get quite hot and anxious at this time of the month. To a lot of people’s surprise it is because right about now, I receive a delightful and always charming email from Leah at Absolutely gently reminding me that I’m due to write a piece for the magazine. As it is usually about me, I push it to one side and save it for the “later” to do pile. Leah eventually has to bully me into doing it just as they’re going to print, nothing like being put under pressure to be entertaining... A little bit about me. I started life as an agent in Oxford, shortly lived due to a long commute from my home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. So I swapped my commute for a job in Cheltenham only to be thrown into the lion’s den of an aggressive, all female “mature” team. My first lesson as a 20 something year old was “these girls work really hard and they’re really good so you’ve got to prove yourself” and off I went, dropped into the middle of the ocean. I was actually far more interested in fashion but having an attitude from an early age which was and still is “failing is not an option”, I got my kicks out of doing deals in order to
fund my shoe collection and nothing much has changed. I proceeded to sashay around Cheltenham getting to know anyone who would be willing to talk to me and built up a great contact list of people. These things take time! I then changed agents to a new flashy firm that I was very honoured to be asked to open with my then fiery boss Sue. We had a great first year, I loved the challenge but something just wasn’t quite enough – so I handed my notice in and moved to London. Little did I know that I was about to join the most awesome company ever – Douglas and Gordon (yes Ivor will be reading this!). I have to say it was one of my brighter decisions. I started in Kensington and later opened Westbourne Grove office which has added to our profile no end. I am lucky enough to have a fantastic team in both sales and lettings to work with and I rarely, if at all, dread coming to work which I think is definitely something to be proud of. So to sum it up, I have a passion for interiors, shoes, fashion, bubbles, laughing and my new flat in Brook Green, so all is well in Maddie’s world. 020 7727 7777; douglasandgordon.com

PROPERTY NEWS RUTH BLOOMFIELD: SECRETS TO A HAPPY HOME Many great minds have pondered the secret of happiness and it appears that Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo may have hit upon the solution. Portnoy and Angelo, in case you need reminding, are the songwriters who created the immortal theme song to the 1980s sitcom Cheers with its “sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name” refrain. Three decades or so on and a survey by Banner Homes claims to have isolated the key secrets of a happy home. And just like the song says, living within two miles of a pub where the landlord greets you by name takes top spot. In London, of course, everybody lives within two minutes of a pub let alone two miles (unless of course your local has been recently transformed into high spec housing). But the likelihood of mein host at the trendy local gastropub remembering you is exceedingly slim. Some of the other keys to happiness unearthed in the study are touchingly humble: a comfy sofa (so not a trendy mid-century modern knock off then), a big bed, and a nice dinner table all make the list. Others leave Londoners a little adrift. Proximity to countryside, front and back gardens with plenty of trees and space enough for a shed and barbecue area, and off-road parking all make the list. Hah. Most London homes are so close to the pavement that anybody can peep into their living room, and have titchy back gardens cluttered with half dug vegetable patches and trampolines.
Off street parking is a distant dream. Most of us are reduced to battling for a space in a bay (and paying handsomely for the privilege of parking three streets away from our front door). Good neighbours are also considered terribly important; in Notting Hill most of us would settle for a neighbour not intent on carving out a giant subterranean basement leisure complex, ruining our peace and quiet and possibly our structural integrity too. On the other hand those who live in central London have many, many unique reasons to be cheerful. We may not have country walks but we can walk to the best theatres, shops, museums and galleries in the country. Our architecture is breathtaking, and while we may be more than ten miles from the seaside (another ingredient for happiness at home, apparently) we are handy for the airport for seaside breaks. And since we live in the heart of the city we won’t have spent this chilly winter snowed into our homes, huddling on our comfy sofa with only our two pets (also essential) for warmth because our expensive ground source heat pump has gone kaput. We are also probably the only homeowners in Britain who can expect our property prices to grow in the next five years. And while money might not buy you happiness, we all know that it is capable of bringing a satisfied little smile to most faces.
MARTIN BIKHIT, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT KAY & CO.
The year has got off to a very encouraging start with a significant number of good quality buyers looking in all price ranges across W2 registering with us. As always, the biggest issue is stock and a lack of quality stock. Many of our larger transactions, say £5 million and over, virtually all of which are to overseas buyers introduced by our international network of bankers, lawyers, accountants and wealth managers, stalled at the end of last year. These buyers waited to ascertain the exact implications of the chancellor’s introduction of an annual levy for properties valued at over £2 million and purchased by a “non-natural person”; the most common being some sort of off shore structure, together with the introduction of capital gains tax at a new rate of 28%. Many did decide to go ahead with the purchase of the share in the company rather than the property asset in their personal name, but the new legislation is certainly an unwelcome inconvenience to our market. However, it will not deter buyers from investing in London and we have not seen the end of “non-natural persons” buying in W2. kayandco.com, 020 7262 2030

I had a few Whiskey Sours at Westbourne House on Westbourne Grove the other night, and found them to be incredibly delicious. In fact, the more I had the better they tasted!
The recently renovated Electric Brasserie still serves their delicious burgers which are a popular favourite and after you’ve eaten, you can watch a movie while indulging in a cocktail.

HELP PET OWNERS IN NEED OF A GOOD HOME… According to research carried out by Dogs Trust, almost half of the UK population currently owns a pet. That means a huge proportion of those looking to rent a home in the capital are looking for a pet friendly property. Many pet owners are forced to live in unsuitable properties and in some cases, people even have to give up their pets to find the right home for themselves. With more and more people looking for a home suitable for them and their four-legged friends, Mountgrange Heritage has recently launched a Pet Friendly Lettings Scheme. The aim is simple; to match pet owners with a home that’s just right for them. Speaking about the launch of the Pet Friendly Letting Scheme, Director – Head of Lettings, Liz Thomson said: “With a plethora of open space and businesses targeted at animal lovers, Kensington and Chelsea is a wonderful place for pet owners, yet there is a real shortage of rental properties willing to accept animals. We hope our Pet Friendly Lettings scheme will help more people find the home they are looking for.” To find out more, please call Liz Thomson on 020 8960 0181 or email Liz@mountgrangeheritage.co.uk

NICHOLAS SPENCER, SENIOR SALES NEGOTIATOR, ANSCOMBE AND RINGLAND As front of house negotiator I am usually the first to see market changes in both supply and demand. Over the past 8 weeks there has been a definite increase in European buyers. The French in particular have been very busy looking for investment property in W8 and W2. As in any start to the year, the stock level has struggled to meet demand, forcing prices northwards. I suspect prices to level off as clients look to take advantage of increased returns in the spring. Certainly we are experiencing improved demand for those properties that failed to sell in December. 020 7727 7227; anscombes.co.uk
IAN LYNCH, PARTNER, PATRICK CLAYTON Here at Patrick Clayton, the start of 2013 was booming! We have registered a high number of new applicants who required four and five bed properties around W8, W11 and W14, where budgets ranged between £3000 and £3500 per week. This is a strong indication to a very promising lettings market. Investors & Buy-to-let landlords are actively looking to purchase buy-to-let properties with a good rental yield and good capital growth across the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. However, investors should always consider the quality of the property when choosing to invest, as this will impact the future yields that can be achieved. 0207 368 1638; patrickclayton.co.uk 119

You may know us from walking your dog in the park, local charity events or simply recognise a familiar face; we walk the same streets and eat in the same restaurants you do. Of course, it’s also quite possible that you – or someone you know – has bought or sold a property through us. We’ve been around for years and our success is built on the fact that people who use us once, tend to use us again. And tell their friends. Because most of our agents live in the areas in which they work, they really understand what matters to buyers and sellers there. Many agents will claim to know more about where you live than anyone else. But we understand it’s because people know us, that time and again we sell and let properties more quickly and more profitably than anyone else.
Bob Crowley A relentlessly driven individual, Bob’s passions are selling Notting Hill properties and beating the competition. This may mean he’s not much fun at a dinner party, (we couldn’t possibly comment) but he’s absolutely the man you want to market and sell your property.

A private viewing will be held at Great Western Studios on Thursday February 21st, and the exhibition officially opens on the 22nd February until 6th March. greatwesternstudios.com; bectivelesliemarsh.co.uk
To celebrate the opening of their 17th office, Marsh & Parsons are offering the first 100 customers in the new South Kensington office a 0% sales fee until March 29th. The new office will benefit from Marsh & Parsons’ shared database across the borough, giving vendors and landlords in South Kensington immediate access to an established pool of over 10,000 buyers and tenants. Peter Rollings, Chief Executive of Marsh & Parsons comments: “South Kensington is often the first port of call for international buyers coming to the area, and our new office will allow us to tap into this seam of demand, while improving our coverage of the area for existing clients in the Royal Borough. The state-of–the-art office will be an added string to our bow in the area and is a key part of our growth plans for 2013 to build on our success in the last 12 months. This is part of our planned expansion strategy, and we hope to continue to broaden our network in central London in the next year.” marshandparsons.co.uk; 020 7368 4458
KFH CELEBRATES SUCCESS AT AWARDS EVENING Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward, one of London’s largest independent estate agents, celebrated the success of 2012 with a glittering awards evening held at The Brewery, EC1Y, London, on Friday the 25th of January 2013. Over 550 KFH staff attended the black tie event which began with a conference outlining the year’s star performers and upcoming company initiatives for the year ahead. Hosting the evening and providing the entertainment was renowned comedian and actor, Jack Whitehall. The evening recognized and rewarded the highest achievers across all of Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward’s business divisions including sales, lettings, financial services, professional services, block management and commercial property services. Key announcements on the evening included details of the group’s expansion plan which involves opening an additional twenty branches in the next five years. Also key to 2013 will be the development and growth of non-sales related services and the group’s digital offering. Lee Watts, Managing Director, comments: “Our annual awards party is always a highly regarded event which all our staff members look forward to. Every single employee contributed towards the success of KFH in 2012 and it’s important to recognise their efforts. Despite the downturn and somewhat restrained property market in comparison with a few years ago, we surpassed all of our targets for the year and were responsible for almost one in every ten sales across the 12 London boroughs within which we operate.” kfh.co.uk

This new development will provide a stylish and modern alternative to the existing housing stock in W10. Situated on Pangbourne Avenue, the development is a breath of luxurious modernity, with each property elegantly finished throughout. Properties feature high specification fixtures and fittings including exclusive Siemens kitchens, interior design by the acclaimed Honky, outdoor spaces including balconies and private gardens, and secure underground parking is available. PROFILE
MOVING IN
NOTHING’S BETTER THAN THE INSIDE SCOOP. LOCAL AGENTS GIVE THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS...
STREET
William Tellwright, John D Wood & Co, 020 7727 2233; johndwood.co.uk Notting Hill sits on high quality clay, and in the early 1800’s this provided for the brick making kilns on Pottery Lane. The stables for the Hippodrome Racecourse was also situated on Pottery Lane.
LOCAL HANG OUT
James Kerman, Winkworth, 0207 792 5000; winkworth.co.uk My team and I regularly frequent the Portobello Road Hotel for a spot of lunch or for a few cheeky pints after work. There is a wonderfully warm atmosphere and once the weather warms up, we’ll be sure to take advantage of the outdoor seating area.
KIDS
Julia Lee, Mountgrange Heritage, 020 8960 0181; mountgrangeheritage.co.uk Holland Park is the perfect hang out for families. It’s the perfect size and the gardens are just so beautiful in the Spring. They have tennis courts for older kids or a lovely play area for the younger ones. The best bit is that it’s right on our doorstep – and it’s free to get in!
RELAX
Sebastian Anduze , Jackson-Stops & Staff, 020 7727 5111; jackson-stops.co.uk I would highly recommend Cowshed for a healthy lunch while waiting for a supremely relaxing treatment. Nestled in the heart of Holland Park this convenienty positioned and truly wonderful establishment at Clarendon Cross is the ultimate urban retreat.
FACT
Phillip Harrison, Barnard Marcus, 020 7221 5455; sequencehome.co.uk Holland Park Avenue - This street was largely rural until the 19th century. Most of the surrounding neighbourhood was formerly the grounds of the Jacobean mansion Holland House. In the later decades of the 19th Century the owners of the house sold off land, and the district which evolved took its name.
INTERIOR INSPIRATION
Edward Parker, Anscombe and Ringland, 020 7727 7227; anscombes.co.uk I see so many different styles and tastes in interior design, and I love to see something fresh and unusual when I am appraising a property. One that we are currently marketing is a mews house with an eclectic loft style interior. It’s these unique properties which really stand out for me.
