n the wake of the London Design Festival and Decorex, we are focusing heavily on design and interiors this month, which has led us to meet lots of inspiring people with a diverse array of interests and skills. One brilliant and exciting designer is Lara Bohinc, who has just taken up residence in Golborne Road with her eclectic range of products. Her approach to design is conceptual – she's more interested in the design than in the thing itself, so for her, a table is much the same as an earring really. It's not so different from Richard Brendon's approach - his studio on nearby Kensal Road isn't a classic ceramics workshop, though ceramics are his business, because his focus is on design and the processes of manufacturing. He gives new life to unloved and forgotten saucers by creating new cups for them, an idea that started small and cute but which is now a serious player in the world of bone china. We also look at the work of Deirdre Dyson

17 NH_Oct15_EDS_LETTER.indd 17

(wife of revolutionary designer James) whose skills have taken her from fine art to carpet design. We briefly quiz design giant Jonathan Adler on his inspirations (and find they're not predictable at all) and on the art front, we find a resurgence of interest in LS Lowry's work among the art folk of Westbourne Grove. Alongside all this, we've got the usual mix of local events, fashion and food. I have tried the DNA diet and cheated by feasting at W8's cholesterol-heavy Dirty Bones; we have found the area's best early-morning workout and discovered new facial oils; we have shopped for coats and for children's clothes. In all, it's quite a sprawl, but that's west London for you. ◆

S Eliot’s most popular play returns to the stage this autumn. Brought to life by emerging director Abbey Wright, this complex and insightful drama about the human mind, love and deceit embodies the everyday struggles of domestic life while subverting the ‘drawing room comedy’ trope. The play sets the scene at the home of Edward and Lavinia Chamberlayne, who

have organized a cocktail party. Everything is going splendidly until, on the morning of the party, Lavinia decides to leave Edward. In spite of this, Edward perseveres with their plans, deflecting questions about the whereabouts of his wife until an unexpected guest shows up with Lavinia in tow. ◆ l 103 Notting Hill Gate, W11; the-print-room.org

With a crafty knack of securing the best spaces in the area (Daylesfords, the Sorting Office and Westbank) to name just a few of their haul, this year they have taken over a fourstorey town house at the top of Lonsdale Road opposite the Walmer Castle. explained: “We are so happy to be back in Notting Hill, as each year it gets a little harder to find an interesting space. To celebrate our 15th birthday, we've put together a group retrospective, featuring many of our favourite artists from around the world. It has been especially fun to curate this show, as it’s not often that we get to hang a show in a multiroom townhouse, including its dilapidated bathroom and kitchen.” With an open ended tenancy in place, visit soon to avoid disappointment. ◆ 1 Lonsdale Road, W11 ap-art.co.uk

Matchstick Men LS Lowry comes to Westbourne Grove Wo r d s P e a r l B oy d

Westbourne Grove gallery might not be the most obvious place to go acquiring scenes of northern factory workers, but Whitewall Galleries have become one of the leading dealers of work by LS Lowry. One of Britain’s most prized artists, L.S. Lowry’s matchstick men and scenes of the industrial north have attracted increasing attention from the international art market in recent years. Since the 2011 sale of his Piccadilly Circus for £5.6 million, Lowry’s work has come to be viewed on par with Britain’s most important 20th century artists, including Henry Moore, David Hockney, and Barbara Hepworth. Following Tate

THE FOOTBALL MATCH

Britain’s show in 2013, the world watched as L.S. Lowry came to be viewed alongside the greatest European artists of the 20th century, including Van Gogh, Pisarro, and Suerat, who, like Lowry, strived to interpret the new industrial world. A new exhibition of rarely available Fine Art Guildstamped, hand-signed limited editions, and original sketches on paper opens in Westbourne Grove this month. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for investors, collectors or first time buyers to view and acquire work by L.S. Lowry. Collectors are invited to view early at private champagne views taking place on the evenings of the 8 and 9 October, prior to the exhibition that runs from 10 to 15 October. u

The Shape of Things

Jeweller Lara Bohinc has opened a new shop in Golborne Road, and launched a collection of furniture. And tables aren’t as much of a departure from rings as you might think Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

J

ewellery design is a small-scale activity. Literally. People routinely work under magnifying glasses and goldsmiths are adept at creating the tiniest of precise details. But Lara Bohinc is an entirely different kind of jewellery designer, one whose specialism transcends such details as scale or material. ‘I’m interested in shapes,’ she announces, which opens up her remit enormously. And in fact, although she is known for her jewellery, she sees it as simply one facet of her role as a designer, and her new furniture collection is not a departure from anything but rather a natural extension. “People always say it’s so different but for me it’s not. When you’re a designer, one day you might be doing a bottle, the next day a motorbike, it’s not a problem.”

When you’re a

DESIGNER, ONE DAY YOU MIGHT be doing a bottle, THE NEXT DAY A MOTORBIKE

Slovenia-born Bohinc is beautiful almost in a Hollywood way, stylish and with a very kind face that makes her instantly likeable. She’s clearly got a strong sense of humour and a firm individuality that gives her the confidence to define herself and her work outside of the usual perameters. So her new shop in Golborne Road is neither a fashion store nor an interiors boutique but a stockist of “beautiful objects,” she tells me over coffee at one of her new regular W10 spots. Because for her, designing a table isn’t as different from designing a ring as a non-designer would expect – in fact it’s not different at all. “For jewellery I use stone and metal and for furniture I use stone and metal; and the techniques are the same: laser cutting, setting stone, painting metals, photo etching. And really, when you look at the table, if you imagine it shrunken, it could be a ring.”

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE

When you look at the TABLE, IF YOU IMAGINE it shrunken, it COULD BE a ring This is why she has chosen Golborne Road as her new base (her first shop was in Hoxton Square, her second in Chelsea and now her shop/office is permanently in W10) – because she was looking for somewhere that wasn’t predominately associated with either fashion or interiors. To define a designer by the things they design is quite a restrictive attitude. While many people choose to stick to particular categories of object, whether they’re cars or chairs or handbags, others don’t. And Bohinc’s entrance into the world of jewellery wasn’t so much because of the jewellery as for the achievability of it. “When you come out of college and you don’t know where to start, jewellery is great because all you need is a kitchen table and a set of tools –you get a small flame burner and you can melt things. And it’s so easily transportable, you can go to a trade show with a suitcase. For me to start making tables when I left

college would have been a hell of a step, but jewellery is very easy to set up.” Starting out, it was more realistic to work on her shapes on a smaller scale, and thus they became jewellery pieces. Which is an interesting way of looking at it and probably quite unusual, I suggest. “People are very different,” shrugs Bohinc. “I learnt that when I was at Royal College. Some people are really craft based and they work mainly with the material. Others are really into stones

and they work around precious stones. It depends. I’m into design. And shapes. I’m not so interested in the stones themselves.” Bohinc’s background is in industrial design, which is a broad discipline that can take in “anything from cutlery design to hoovers – it can be a decorative object or an object for daily use.” Its approach is to look at the technology first and the industrial techniques. “I’m very interested in new processes. At the moment I use lots of 3d printing; I used to use lots of laser cutting.” Her new collection of tables in collaboration with stone specialists Lapicida launched at Decorex in September and they are huge, impressive pieces in stone and metal. Bohinc has lived in London for more than 20 years, ever since she first came ‘with just a suitcase’ to study at the Royal College of Art. Home is Marylebone, where she first lived as a student in the days when ‘it was full of charity shops; I had friends who lived in squats there.’ Appreciating the fact that you can walk to Soho and that its centralness makes it ‘neutral’, she has stayed. ‘My friends who live east never go west and the other way round, but I go anywhere.’ Now that she's based in Golborne Road, in her shop full of beautiful things, I’ll bet even that those who live east will come. u

mily Dyson’s fabulous Notting Hill fashion and homeware store, Couverture, focuses on niche independent labels, initiates exclusive collaborations and champions emerging talent. Just launched is Emma Greenhill’s beautiful scarf collection. Entitled Matchmaker and made from a blend of cashmere and modal, the four large scarves are inspired by childhood memories of her grandmothers. Each scarf has its own bright, individual colour scheme, with visuals referencing playful subjects including the elaborate costumes at The Ballets Russes, the circus, 20th century puppets and children’s book, The World is Round by Gertrude Stein. All scarves are priced at £300. Also new to Couverture is its first own-brand beauty range, called No Chemicals, for obvious reasons. Products include incense, a candle and perfume oil, inspired by Emily Dyson’s travels in Turkey and beautifully packaged in a green tile print. The fragrance contains bergamot, orange leaves, rose and geranium and it is fresh, organic and natural, with none of the cloying sweetness of commercial fragrances. Available exclusively at the store, it suits its quirky and stylish surroundings perfectly. ◆ ● COUVERTURE & T H E GA R B STO R E 188 Kensington Park Road, W11; couvertureandthegarbstore.com

he most significant purchase you’ll make in the next month or two will be your new winter coat. The tricky thing is that there are so many styles to choose from. From parkas to peas and macs to duffles – the options are endless. Right now, however, it’s all about oversized outer layers. The biggest trend this Autumn Winter ’15 is for billowing double-breasted overcoats with a distinct 80s power dressing vibe. The season’s best can be found at Paul Smith, Korean label Wooyoungmi and British brand Burberry Prorsum. Wear yours with a fitted crew neck, tapered trousers and some derbies, or throw it over a suit for a Patrick Bateman inspired look (just be sure to forgo the axe). ◆

e all know the drill. After the initial sheen of newly coloured hair wears off, we're left with broken, dry and frizzy locks that send us hunting for conditioning treatments to cover up the damage. But now there's a solution that sounds so simple you wonder why nobody thought of it sooner. Olaplex is a new system from the US that's creating a storm in the beauty world for its simplicity and effectiveness in turning around the harm usually caused by chemical treatments. It's a reconstructive hair conditioner that actually works with colour instead of post-colour in the usual way. One treatment; no damage. No wonder salons are signing up in their droves. One early adopter is Ego in Queen's Park,

where owner Andy Loizou is a fan. "You can use it with a colour treatment or without," he tells me, mixing the compound as he prepares my highlights. The idea is that not only does it reduce breakage and protect the hair from colour's harshness, but it actually repairs it too and leaves it feeling soft, silky and super light. The three-step procedure finishes with a strengthening treatment to take home and use weekly. No wonder everybody's raving. ◆

Oil trader

Absolutely’s own Arabella Preston has just launched her own range of facial oils and they’re an instant success at Liberty. We quizzed her about it Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

your skin. It was when I started using the oil cleanser and thought, this is how skin should feel, that I started experimenting and researching, reading the back of packs and realising that a lot of oils were full of cheap ingredients. So I started mixing my own. Q: And how did that become a business? AP: Last year I was having lunch with my old boss Charlotte Semler, who founded Myla, and some of the old team and they were asking me (as people always do) for advice on their skin. I told them I used oil and that I made it myself and Charlotte, who’s a brilliant businesswoman, suggested that we do something with it. She works so fast that she really speeded me on – and from lunch to launch took less than a year. Q: Why Votary? AP: It means devoted, or advocate, so it has religious connotations – it ends in ‘ary’, which is my nickname, and we wanted something that would look and sound unisex because the oils are great for men too. We chose green apothecary glass and were lucky to find a great designer – and then lucky that Liberty loved it and wanted to stock the range. Q: What ingredients are used? AP: Lots! For the cleanser it’s rose, geranium and apricot oil, while the neroli and myrrh oil is based on grapeseed oil and contains hazelnut oil, which really gives a good glow and feels really luxurious. Jasmine and calendula is the lightest, while rose maroc and sandalwood is the thickest. u

Q: Why oils, Arabella? AP: For me, discovering an oil cleanser was a real revelation. It makes your skin feel soft and alive, not dry and tight. So I started thinking, why do we dry our skin out by cleansing and then put a layer of grease on it? It doesn’t make sense. Absolutely: But aren’t oils greasy? AP: No. It might go against your instincts to put oil on a spot, after we’ve been told for years to dry spots out, but in fact it’s exactly what you should do. I really don’t get spots any more since I’ve been using oils, because most skin problems derive from dehydration. Where people sometimes go wrong is with using too much oil with pipettes. You really only need three or four drops.

Oil IS REALLY the BEST WAY to bring life TO YOUR SKIN

Q: So how did this translate into making your own oils? AP: I’ve been making my own facial oils in a very kitchen table way for a while now. As a make-up artist, I often start by massaging oil into people’s faces and would see them instantly relax, partly also because of the smell, which is very important. Massaging in oil is really the best way to bring life back to your skin – and your make-up’s only ever as good as

Gene Pool Everybody’s talking about the DNA Diet. Absolutely gives it a try Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

ecently I saw a friend who I hadn’t seen for ages. It was a dinner party and she was looking fabulously slim, younger than ever and glowingly healthy while eating heartily. Everybody had to ask. ‘It’s the DNA diet,’ she raved, though nobody could quite believe it. Surely she must have a picture in her attic. How could she be eating so greedily? ‘Everything’s on the List,’ she insisted. The List, it turned out, was a comprehensive list of everything she was allowed to eat, and that was it. All she had to do was avoid things not on it. There are at least as many theories about nutrition as there are pods in a pomegranate. People are prepared to try anything, however unlikely sounding, in the hope of achieving the elusive state of sustainable slimness with boundless energy, fantastic skin and hair and a generally heightened sense of wellbeing. Whether we are sold on carb avoidance, sugar abstinence, 5:2 or eating exclusively green things, there are as many flavours of foodie evangelism as there are additives in a ready meal.

THERE ARE AS MANY flavours of foodie evangelism AS THERE ARE ADDITIVES IN A READY MEAL So within this climate, the idea that your genes are responsible for your tastes, cravings and food sensitivities is a useful starting point, leading to the notion that there is a true and perfect eating plan for each individual, one that’s scientifically established to react positively with our unique cellular matter. It’s a convincing theory, and an appealing tool with which to navigate the nutritional maze. My friend’s list, I discovered, included the following oft-slighted things: pasta, red meat, butter. She was allowed croissants but not red peppers. Brazil nuts but not almonds. Wine but not coffee. That kind of thing.

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_Oct15_ DNA DIET.indd 62

So I’m curious. A special kit arrives and I send my swab back to the lab. Soon afterwards, my report appears – not a list but a terrifying 29-page document that bombards me with scientific detail. It includes such sentences as “your genetic result for this gene means that you have two copies of the gene which codes for the version of the enzyme which functions well in the detoxification process.” Totally incomprehensible – where’s the List? Happily, the service includes a consultation, and soon Frankie is on the phone. A lengthy conversation results in me understanding a few things about my unique makeup. For instance, I shouldn’t eat many carbs due to a high carbohydrate sensitivity. (‘I’d have expected you to be quite overweight,’ she says) and due to a particular enzyme code, I should be careful of grilled or smoked meat. Due to lacking a version of one enzyme, I am instructed to consume lots of kale and broccoli, and I am in need of extra antioxidants. But on a more positive note, I have not a trace of lactose or gluten intolerance, my vitamin B needs are normal and my alcohol tolerance is fine. Pure Package puts together a food plan and delivers (before dawn) a daily parcel of meals adhering to my precise requirements. So for breakfast there’s an only slightly disappointing array of frittata, while lunch might be prawn cocktail and asparagus salad, or Japanese sea spaghetti and mushroom salad, and for dinner, say, lime and coriander chicken or matter paneer. It’s not joyless at all and there’s even a dairy-free chocolate mousse, and some corn chips. So maybe not quite as straightforward as my friend's List, but adding kale and broccoli to my daily staples, cutting down on biscuits and not worrying about dairy is a simple enough philosophy and I'll stick to that. u The DNA Diet is available from The Pure Package. The DNA report alone costs £245; a test and 10 day food plan costs £689; purepackage.com

ymClass is, currently, my favourite fitness studio in London – the only workout I will set my alarm at 5am for. There aren’t many things that get me up and out at dawn but I do it for the sleek studio space, banging sound system and delicious recovery smoothie menu (the Berry Blast is a must-try). The real hook, however, is the workout itself. Created by the bubbly ex-Barry’s Bootcamper Helle Hammonds, the 55 minute, HiiT and resistance training session takes place in a gym-bunnies playground so you’ll be climbing, punching and burpee-ing your way to a strong and lean body. Results orientated, the classes turn your body into a fat-burning machine so that you continue to torch calories thoughout the day. Blurring the line between group classes and personal training, you’ll often work in pairs so that the motivation and competition levels remain high. Targeting specific areas so effectively you’ll feel it the next day – Luke Grahame’s “Maximus” glute and leg workclass had me wobbly for days. All classes are popular, but Helle’s Saturday 10.30AM session is forever a sell-out so book now. ◆

SEARED SCALLOPS

iving scallops a quick sea in the pan really brings out their sweetness, so a Blanc de Blancs fizz could work wonders, but perhaps a more interesting alternative is South Africa’s flagship white grape, Chenin Blanc. This is made by one of the most successful Chenin producers, with its fresh-but-rich stone fruit flavours acting as the perfect foil to the scallops' sweet meat. ◆

LANCASHIRE HOTPOT

he wholesome meaty flavour of hotpot likes nothing more than a red Bordeaux blend as a wine match. This Tuscan version fits the bill perfectly with its intense dark cherry fruit and smooth tannins. However, the key to this match is its brightness of fruit (to lift the meaty hotpot) which comes courtesy of its Tuscan coast location. Made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Alicante Bouschet grapes. ◆

Dirty Bones

Kensington’s answer to New Yorkstyle comfort eating Wo r d s p e n d l e h a r t e

A

s Dirty Bones opens a second site in Soho, the Kensington outpost gains the honour of being the original. Easily missable from the street, it's a tardis-like basement styled to recall a dive that's been there forever, though of course it hasn't – all peeling posters and distressed tiles, vintage pinball machine, mismatched retro lamps and reclaimed parquet in a heavily designed-to-look-authentic way. Offering 'New York-inspired comfort food' this is not a spot for anyone on a New York-inspired health kick – or any other kind. Without a scrap of a superfood, this is a menu that's not ashamed to champion carbohydrate and saturated fat without bothering too much with the green stuff or the five-a-day. It's as if cholesterol had never happened – as the name says, dirty. An example: fries can be ordered Skinny,

CRISPY FRIED chicken with BOURBON

and marshmallow

SAUCE, ANYONE? 71

Chilli, Dirty (with chilli cheese sauce, BBQ sauce and cactus salsa) or Double Dirty (as before, only with extra pulled pork). And if that's not dirty enough for you, crispy fried chicken with bourbon and marshmallow BBQ sauce, anyone? We are slightly cleaner in our choices. But only slightly. The menu's clearly defined: bones, burgers and dogs. To start, we have salt and pepper squid and crispy pork skin puffs (delicious) and then, for me, it's the Mac Daddy burger, the big one, topped with pulled beef short rib as well as a large helping of macaroni cheese. Predictably, it's delicious, a post-ironic guilty pleasure that's proud to laugh in the face of the fussy foodie. Juicy and oozing with umami, the mac and cheese isn't remotely out of place in this generous mouthful. My friend has a spicy chicken burger and we enjoy a heritage tomato salad, which comes as an assortment of different types of tomato and shows that salad is far from an afterthought even in this high-protein kitchen. Puddings are excellent too: we love the milk and cookie combo, which is vastly more exciting and grown up than it sounds: milk gelato and soft-baked chocolate ganache cookie was far too good to share; there's also coffee and donuts, featuring coffee gelato and a sugared donut, plus a selection of 'dirty digestivs' that combine sugar, fat and alcohol in a horribly decadent way. If you ate here every day, something terrible would doubtless happen to you, but everyone deserves a blowout sometimes and this is a good place for it. We're off to the Carnaby Street branch for our next one. ◆

POT HEAD

Richard Brendon is shaking up the world of teaware from his Notting Hill studio. Absolutely meets him Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

M

ost people studying product design probably aren’t particularly interested in staid old teacups. And neither was Richard Brendon, until he came to realise how often they get broken. Now he runs a busy studio, not just designing and producing teacups but reinventing the way people see bone china. With his winning alignment of tradition and modernity, Brendon’s wide appeal spans cult style consultancy Patternity as well as Fortnum and Mason, and addresses issues as big as the decline of British industry. How has this all arisen from a few broken cups? At his small studio in Kensal Road, Brendon is younger than you’d imagine, and his business has come a long way since launching in 2012. Just three years on, his products are contributing significantly to a growth in Stoke on Trent’s manufacturing output, a piece is set to feature in the V&A’s forthcoming exhibition on the history of British ceramics and an impressive stockist list includes The Conran Shop and Bluebird

as well as Paul Smith and Fortnums. This despite having no background in ceramics or even a particular leaning towards the field. How did it happen? “It started with an interest in sets,” he tells me. “How something gets devalued if a part is broken or lost.” Interestingly, Brendon is conceptual rather than craft-based, though the final stage is very much about craftsmanship, and he has come away with a thorough knowledge of manufacturing process. Anyway, the obsession with sets and missing pieces led him to a lot of trawling around car boot sales and charity shops looking at antique china, which led to lots of broken cups. Or rather, to a notable absence of cups. “I realised that people break cups a lot more often than they break saucers, so I started buying lone saucers with the idea of making them useful again,” he says, and these widowed saucers became the starting point for Reflect, his first collection, which he still produces and remains his best-seller – and still depends on a constant stream of sole saucers, many of them sourced from Portobello Road. “I had the idea to create a reflective cup which would show the pattern from the

saucer and reunite the pieces. I went to Stoke-on-Trent to meet manufacturers, and was told that if we gilded the cups with gold or platinum it would create a reflective surface.” So he made saucerless cups to complement the decorative but redundant saucers, and launched them at Ledbury Road’s Wolf & Badger before he even had a business. Reflect was spotted by buyers from Paris and by Lucia Van Der Post, and the rest is, as they say, history. Because history became a big thing for Brendon. “I had a huge period of learning about the history of British ceramics and started to think about the decline of British industry – discovering all the best things from the past 300 years made me see how bad it had all become and made me want to work with all the wonderful manufacturers and craftspeople we still have in Stoke-on-Trent to create something beautiful.” Another collection inspired by the past is Willow, referencing willow pattern crockery, the blue and white pattern so prevalent over the past 300 years but seemingly unloved today. “The most iconic pattern in British ceramics had just gone out of fashion,” laments Brendon, who took it upon himself to bring it back by creating beautiful glazed transfers from selected details to form a new, updated collection. And for

Patternity, a collaboration with an agency that specialises in pattern, a collection in cobalt blue and gold (“for 300 years the most traditional colour palette”) takes inspirations from Georgian ceramics. “The first period I fell in love with was Georgian into Regency. The shapes are wonderful and very elaborate. I simplified them to make them more contemporary, taking away fluting and details.” More attention to detail comes in Speck, which looks like an innocent dot pattern until you discover the story behind it. Each red dot is positioned randomly because it covers a tiny and inevitable imperfection in the clay, one which would usually be deliberately disguised by pattern but which, when drawn attention to, highlights the actual manufacture process.

85 NH_OCT_15RICHARD BRENDON.indd 85

It’s not all about ceramics for Brendon, who remains a product designer. His philosophies such as “the process of production should be visible” and “if you don’t understand how things are made you’re never going to make anything particularly interesting or nice” are applicable to pretty much anything. One new project is a range of diamond cut crystal and marble barware, produced in the Czech Republic. Also new is a bespoke service with a new colour palette that allows people to match their china to their interiors – and the first take up has been from Fortnum and Mason, for whom a range has been made in its trademark eau de nil. So for Brendon it’s an interesting mix of old and new. He still spends a lot of time going through old saucers and dating them (“that’s definitely 1875”). Does he worry that he’ll ever run out? “We haven’t yet. I’m amazed how many there are. Every time we start to run low, more show up. People will carry on breaking cups.” With such a sustainable business model, who could fail? ◆

An extra-wide Victorian house in W10 has been given palatial proportions with this fabulous extension Wo r d s p e n d l e h a r t e P i c t u re s H u f to n a n d C r ow

rchitect Sophie Nguyen’s recent W10 project has been shortlisted for the Sunday Times British Homes Awards in the category ‘best one-off house or extension up to 2,500 sq ft’. This detached Victorian house was already quite exceptional with its 11-metre width and its special setting within a conservation area but fairly hidden from the street. When Nguyen first saw it, the layout was muddled. ‘Although it was a big house, there were no big spaces. You certainly didn’t sense the 11 metres and all the grandeur was lost in the partitioning.’ Her clients had fallen in love with the volumes and proportions and they wanted Nguyen to reveal them and allow the light in. Her clients wanted

to create a seamless full-width extension but had had a bad experience in their previous flat, a glazed top floor apartment that suffered from too much sun in summer and was too cold in winter. So they were wary of too much glass – unusually, since generally both clients and architects are very keen on glass – but still wanted to let in a lot of light. Nguyen’s method is to create actual small scale models, and then position them in the garden at different times of day to assess the exact impact of the sunlight. “I prefer to use real models rather than computer images because they give me time to think – also I’m more at ease with cardboard models because you don’t have to be as precise.’ Predictably, initial plans for a full width single storey extension were resisted by the planning department, but Nguyen's studio worked through

various options and eventually gained permission for a full width scheme that was compliant with the conservation area's policies. The result is this beautiful fully gazed facade with a double-pitched roof and a single pitch glass roof, fully harmonised with the original building. ‘I think it’s interesting to create a modern house with elements of classic architecture. Such as a pitched roof on a modern house. John Pawson did it,’ explains Nguyen. This project was intended as a family home and in addition to the large extension, the entire layout was inefficient and needed reworking. Upstairs was badly organised and the grand, impressive staircase was

IT'S ALL ABOUT seeing the SKY hidden by lots of partition walls. Nguyen approached it all by thinking firstly about light. Despite the house's good position and large scale, daylight was unable to penetrate due to the clutter of small, poky rooms and lots of dark wood panelling. Nguyen instantly spotted the potential to allow light to flow through the house from front to back by removing walls, and worked with the clients' initial concerns about glass to create a partially glazed roof for the extension. "It's about seeing the sky," she says.

89 NH_OCT_15_NGUYEN.indd 89

A vast single space now opens onto the large garden and connects to the front sitting room to allow light to flood through. Several partitons were removed to allow the afternoon sun to be visible from the dining area. Of the original features, not many remain, and even door frames have been heightened to increase the sense of proportion and expansiveness. The interior is fitted in a palette of greys as designed by the client herself, with some initial advice from designer Caterina Heil. The final result is a palatial family home with vast proportions and a real sense of light and space. The house's generous width has been set to great advantage to make the absolute most of it. ◆ sophienguyenarchitects.com

FLOOR SHOW Deirdre Dyson recalls her journey from art to carpet design Wo r d s D e i d r e Dy s o n

I

t was never inevitable that I would become a carpet designer. In fact, the opportunity only came when I was looking for something contemporary for the oak floors of our house. Richard Ringrose, the owner of a carpet shop on King’s Road, suggested I designed something myself and have it made. He subsequently asked me to design my own collection. When this offer came out of the blue, I thought it could be fun and surely not too difficult to create work in wool instead of paint. It’s been a challenging but fascinating experience to learn how to translate one into the other and to eventually create my own business. Through Richard, I learnt about the techniques of hand knotting and hand tufting and discovered the magical effects these techniques could achieve. I visited the tufting makers in the UK, as well as going to see the makers at work in Nepal. My first visit took place in 1998 and it was an intensely moving experience. In Kathmandu, I was taken to one of only two ‘stupa’ – enormous domed temples – where I saw hundreds of people practising their faith: Buddhists circumambulating the stupa and Hindus, prostrate, praying. I met my first handknotted supplier, an exiled Tibetan. He was a religious and highly respected man, whose only son, aged five, had been recognized by the Tibetan monks as a child with special gifts and would be sent the following year to a training school to be the possible future Dalai Lama. This supplier owned a complex with a courtyard surrounded by buildings that

Devil's-bit Scabious Hand-knotted, silk on wool background

housed several large looms. He trained his workers and provided housing for them and their families, as well as undertaking a large amount of charity work for the local community, especially for orphans and their education. His workers were happy people, with such speedy skills that, although I sat alongside them at the loom, it was impossible to see exactly how their fingers knotted the wool. I now have several suppliers in Nepal and their skills have created many beautiful carpets over the subsequent years. It was because of my art background that I had the confidence to take Richard up on his suggestion. Despite my school’s insistence that I should become a secretary, I had known since childhood that I wanted to be an artist. My own determination eventually led me to a foundation course at the Byam Shaw School of Art and I was offered a scholarship for a second year. I was tutored by the likes of Bridget Riley,

95 NH_OCT15_DEIDRE_DYSON.indd 95

Peter Sedgley and Bernard Dunstan, and I also met my fellow student and future husband, James Dyson. From there, I went on to Wimbledon College of Art for the three-year diploma course in graphics and illustration. After graduating, I freelanced in graphics and I painted and exhibited in joint and solo shows. I set up and taught a life class and brought up our three children. I had designed two collections for Richard when the financial partner of the business decided to pull out. I tentatively suggested that I become a partner. We renamed the company and began to implement some of my ideas. I wanted all the stock to look contemporary. Fitted carpets were on the way out and everyone was moving towards hard floors. In spite of this, I felt that rugs were the way forward because of their comfort and ability to soften sound. Years of being a student had disciplined me to keep all drawings and a running portfolio, although scattered all over my home, studio and showroom. It has been a pleasure to revisit experiences and I have been left with a feeling of relief that at least this part of my life is in one tidy space and I can continue to move forward with my next absorbing collection. ◆

tokke’s revolutionary Tripp Trapp high chair dates back to 1972. Designed to grow with your child, its main ergonomic advantages lie in its dining table height, so baby can sit right amidst the family action, and clever frame which allows for adjustment (both the depth and the height of the seat and footplates can be changed). Few other high chairs can claim to offer 14 different positions, seeing your child through to the ripe old age of... well, adulthood, apparently. Made from beech, another big plus is that it’s easy to assemble, though its solid wood frame does mean it’s not quite as easy to move around thereafter. As with all designconscious bits of kit, it comes in a number of cool colourways and can be reconfigured with all manner of additional equipment – from a baby seat and cushion to a special tabletop with fun motifs. ◆

BLUE Absolutely travels into the depths of the Caribbean to discover what makes the British Virgin Islands so special W o r d s R o M y va n d e n B r o e k e

I

’ve only been to the Caribbean twice in my life. The first time was when I was 12; my family decided to hop aboard my dad’s Boeing 747 (he was a long-standing pilot for British Airways) and fly to Barbados for a week in the sun, while the second happened more than 15 years later. There was something really magical about my first experience of the Caribbean. Perhaps it was my parents' mutual adoration for this small mound of paradise in the Lesser Antilles (they spent many summers here, including their honeymoon, prior to the arrival of me and my brother) or that it was my first experience of the Caribbean. Or perhaps it was just how perfect it all was. Crystal azure seas, barbecued jumbo prawns, me with braided hair closed with multicoloured beads, body boarding, sitting up front in the cockpit as my dad brought the plane into land – every last bit of the holiday was a dream. Which is possibly why I’ve not been back, for fear of spoiling my memory of it. Until now. The invitation landed in my inbox towards the end of last year: a five-day trip to Virgin Gorda, a small isle in the British Virgin Islands. Richard Branson has a couple of islands in this neck of the woods (Necker and Moskito), Google’s Larry Page owns a neighbouring island, while Morgan Freeman has a home on Virgin Gorda, which only furthered my desire to go. I was in. The trip would take us to the ‘ultimate Caribbean retreat’ otherwise known as Valley Trunk, a private estate on Virgin Gorda, the third largest island in the BVIs. Virgin Gorda was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his famous voyage to the Americas. He spotted the undulating isle from afar and, after likening it to a pregnant woman reclining on her side, christened it Virgin Gorda, which when translated means 'the fat virgin'. Charming. The island itself is verdant, lush and

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST steep, populated by no more than 4,000 people. Some of the main tourist attractions − aside from the white sand beaches, turquoise waters and warm weather − are the prehistoric granite boulders, evidence of the island’s volcanic origin, that scatter the coastline and form bathing grottoes that fill with warm water from the sea. Valley Trunk, a 19-acre coastal estate owned by the prominent Wildenstein family, has been private since the 1980s, but since opening last year has become a key destination for those with enough spare cash to holiday in this part of the Caribbean. The Wildenstein family, who made their hefty fortune in art and horseracing, decided that while they would still use the home on occasion, they needed to keep it alive and working and so opened it up to the public. This might usually imply financial woes, but instead the rental income goes straight back into the family’s black rhino conservation farm, Ol Jogi, in Kenya. The gardens are a thing of beauty: paths are lined with palm trees and vivid borders hold explosions of hot pink and fuchsia bougainvillea. The lagoon-shaped pool is retro, but works in its environment, while the interior decor is smart 70s – though nice and clean, it could have done with a slight update. That said, there is something about the bamboo furniture, pink-and-green bathrooms and mirrored walls that works. Away from the bedrooms (of which there are eight) a couple of essential updates have taken place, the best being the newly added screening room with an HD projector and a library of films. Although exploring the 19 acres of gardens and beach is not too much of an ask to do by foot (there’s a nice jungle walk down to the beach) the resort actually has a troop of golf buggies for you to race around

Profits from renting it out GOES into a BLACK RHINO

CONSERVATION FARM IN KENYA the estate in. A short drive down to the beach brings you to the Bali House, which is set back from the beach and raised up on bamboo stilts. The Bali House offers great vistas out over your very own private beach, perfect for a lunch to escape the midday sun or a late night dinner before strolling on to the beach for a bonfire. There are a couple of treatment rooms below deck, but I’d recommend being super lazy and ordering a massage (or some other treatment) to enjoy in the comfort of your own room. The beach is probably one of the highlights of the estate; a long stretch of pure white sand hemmed by crystal clear Caribbean-cum-North Atlantic sea. The Valley Trunk Bay is perfect: Jurassic Park

style boulders are perched along the coast, which remains shallow until there’s a sudden dip in the seabed. I could have swapped between sun lounger and shallow bathing for the full five days, but activities were a must, and so came an afternoon of paddle-boarding, canoeing and snorkeling, enhanced by a few bottles of Carib beer. We were reluctantly torn away from our lazy beach days for a full-day excursion out on a boat. The boat wasn’t anything too snazzy, but comfortable nevertheless, and had a nice nostalgic feel in keeping with the rest of our stay. While my travel companions were more than happy to sunbathe on the bow, catch glimpses of Branson’s islands and jump into the cerulean sea, for me the offer of scuba diving was too good to pass up, particularly as I’ve never done it before. I had the chance to practice in our pool earlier that day, but being strapped and hooked up in all the apparatus, standing precariously on the side of a boat, was a different state of affairs. Not thinking too much about what lay beneath, I hurled myself off the side of the boat and into the clear water. Before long I was floating through the warm waters of the BVIs with my instructor, who had told me that we would explore for no longer than 20 minutes. Nearly an hour later, we rose for air. Diving is something I have always wanted to try. The beautiful coral, electric blue fish and (planned) diversion via an underwater plane wreck had me breathless. Back on dry land, we experienced one of the estate’s famous beach bonfires: the night began in the Bali House where we were treated to a feast of barbecued wahoo, yellowtail, grouper and red snapper; with fresh salads of rice, okra and saltfish; and some signature British Virgin Island green soup, Kallaloo, all washed down with excellent wines and a myriad of cocktails. After dinner we were escorted to the beach, where we lounged as locals played folk songs in a type of ‘scratch band’ famously associated with the British Virgin Islands. The five days flew, and while the journey home wasn’t as quick (or exciting) as the one-stop flight from Barbados with my dad, it was far smoother than expected. A swift change in St Maarten and a quick turnaround in Paris meant we were back in London 13 hours later. Barbados, Antigua and the like may be slightly more convenient to visit, but I recommend taking the extra flight – you’ll discover a whole new world somewhere as beautiful and relatively untouched as this. u Rates start from £3,850 per night based on 1-4 people. For more information or to make reservations please call (284) 495-5611 or email info@valleytrunk; valleytrunk.com

TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY THE TOWN

T

his small coastal town in West Dorset is as picturesque as they come. Situated on the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis is a seaside hub for tourists and locals alike, with great British food, community events and quintessential features, such as arcade games and countless ice cream stalls. When you’re not living it up in Hix Townhouse or eating some of the best local seafood at Mark Hix’s cliffside restaurant, Hix Oyster and Fish House, take things slow, wander along the pebbled beach and watch the waves roll into the bay. u

HIX TOWNHOUSE LY M E R E G I S W o r d s r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e

THE HOTEL

H

oused in a Georgian build in Lyme Regis, Hix Townhouse is a home away from home. The man behind the restaurant, Mark Hix, is one of London’s most prominent restaurateurs and is renowned for his rustic style, love of art and commitment to seasonal food. The townhouse has been divided into eight rooms, each following a different theme. The best of the bunch has to be the Hunting Suite, which is kitted out with red leather seats and wood panelled walls, on which dormant air rifles and mounted deer head’s hang. There’s no restaurant in the house, rather a small kitchen where you can help yourself to bread and butter or a cup of tea. Breakfast is part of the package, with the housekeeper delivering a large hamper crammed with locally baked goods and other treats for you to eat in the comfort of your own room. u

THE RESTAURANT

I

n housing the hotel and restaurant separately, Mark Hix manages to make food more of a feature. The Hix Oyster and Fish House is only a short five minute stroll up the hill and overlooks the Lyme Regis harbor. Weather dependent, grab an aperitif on the decking and lap up the spectacular vista of the Jurassic coast, before heading indoors for a feast of fish and foraged goods. The restaurant is informal, but that provides no reflection on the quality of the food and service. With a menu thoughtfully designed to showcase the best local produce and seafood from the area, and a wine list edited down to perfection, it's a simple reminder as to why Mark Hix has got to where he is today. Oh and if you’re lucky, the catch of the day will be a lobster that was only caught a couple of hours before Ω you can’t get fresher than that. u

THERE ARE CURRENTLY JUST UNDER 500 HOUSES FOR SALE OVER £5M IN LONDON

PRICE BANDS

Addison Road, closer to Shepherd’s Bush, is increasingly featured in this list. Other areas that came into the fold included The Bishops Avenue and its near-neighbour, Hampstead Garden Suburb. Today the net has spread a little further but it’s really the volume and prices that have increased.

D

o you remember 1996? Boy band Take That split up, Prince Charles granted Diana a divorce, the BSE beef crisis was in full swing, and Glen Hoddle took over from Terry Venables as the England football team manager. But what only a handful of estate agents might remember is that 1996 was the year in which the first house sold for £5m+ in London. The property in question is a semi-detached stucco-fronted villa in The Boltons, Chelsea; the road that the Daily Telegraph recently revealed to be the UK’s most

expensive street. At £8m, the house was the first in London to break through the £5m barrier, followed soon after by a house in Upper Phillimore Gardens, and then a property in Roland Gardens, both at £5.5m. London’s property market blossomed from then on in (aside from a quiet 1997 in which the Labour party swiped political control from the Conservatives). Indeed, half a dozen £5m+ properties were sold in 2000 while last year some 250 were purchased, collectively worth £2.09 billion. During the late Noughties the first tranche were north of Fulham Road and around Kensington, in particular, Holland Park. But

There are currently just under 500 houses for sale over £5m in London – most of which are in Chelsea, Kensington, Mayfair, Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Holland Park, Notting Hill – with a smattering just north of the Bayswater Road. There are also hotspots in St John’s Wood and Hampstead. You might also be surprised to hear that Totteridge, in the capital’s northern suburbs, also features the occasional £5m+ house, as does Wimbledon, Richmond and the areas on the corridor along the Upper Richmond Road. One fascinating aspect of the £5m+ market is the extraordinary acceleration in price that this elite market has enjoyed since the late 1990s. The first property I mentioned at the beginning of this article, in The Boltons, is now valued at around £40m – based on the fact that a similar house on the street sold for £54m two years ago. It’s crazy that just nine years later, £5m seems like a relatively small amount of money. ◆

IN THEIR OWN

WORDS

CHARLIE WILLIS Head of London Residential at Strutt & Parker Photography

R E B ECCA N O O N A N

A

s a self-proclaimed outdoors fanatic, it still surprises me that I have ended up working in the heart of London where there isn’t a mountain or lake in sight! I grew up in Lochwinnoch, near Glasgow, and was educated in the Perthshire glens, always surrounded by hills and water. At age 17 I joined the Army, having made a conscious decision not to go to university (much to my father’s surprise as we are in no way a military family). I wanted to see the world and learn practical skills, and for the next five years that’s exactly what I did in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, Scotland’s only cavalry regiment. Having been one of the first to arrive in Saudi Arabia for the start of the First Gulf War conflict, I went on to spend a very enjoyable year-and-a-half in Germany, finally training up troops in Catterick, North Yorkshire and Ayrshire Yeomany, the distinguished TA regiment. In 1995, two weeks before I was due to leave the Army, I saw an advert in the back of a Foxtons magazine saying they were

IT’S A TESTAMENT TO MY LOVE OF OUR CAPITAL THAT I GRAPPLE WITH A FOUR HOUR DAILY COMMUTE looking for new recruits. I thought it was worth a shot and went in to meet Jon Hunt and Sean Cusack at their South Kensington office. Foxtons only had 25 staff at the time and was a bright, young firm. I remember being struck by the buzz and comradery in the office, and could see that training to be an estate agent wouldn’t be a typical desk job: I would be out and about, meeting new people every day; something I had not thought possible if I had fallen into a job in the City. At the end of the interview Jon Hunt asked if I had any questions and I cheekily said, “When’s my second interview?” My brazen attitude paid off and marked the start of my life in estate agency. To begin with I was learning the ropes and how to win market appraisal pitches for new business. After a few months I became a negotiator working on properties with a price limit of £250k. Next, I

was asked to head up the lettings team in South Kensington, a fastpaced department which billed a sizeable £70k per month. In 2000 I left Foxtons to join Strutt & Parker’s then sole London office on Sloane Street. Over the past 20 years I have been through two peaks and troughs and I’ve learnt how to drive a business forward. Every year pundits predict that the market is going to pop, and yet the Prime Central London market continues to grow. This year I took on a new role as Strutt & Parker’s Head of London Residential. It’s a challenging role, for sure, yet I am very excited about spearheading the next crucial stage in the Partnership’s London story. It’s a testament to my love of our Capital that I grapple with a four hour daily commute from a coastal farmhouse in Maldon, Essex to Mayfair every day. I moved there with my lovely wife 13 years ago and now we have three daughters, two ponies, and a boat. The wild water of the estuary is a far cry from the immaculate streets of Knightsbridge, but I love the fact that I am able to enjoy each with equal pleasure in their diversity. u

PROPERTY / INSIDER Q&A

GREAT ASPIRATIONS Absolutely meets Tom Ward, Director of Aspire Estate Agents What is your favourite thing about Chelsea and Fulham? Ah. There are so many! I think it has to be the range and diversity of places to eat and drink along with the accessibility to some of London’s best shopping hotspots. I drink a lot of coffee and our neighbours on Wandsworth Bridge Road make the best there is – their beer is pretty good too! With reference to shopping, you can hop on and off bus number 22 from Chelsea to Fulham and do all your Christmas shopping in one hit. (Sorry I mentioned Christmas!) What are the best properties currently available from Aspire? We have just launched a seven townhouse scheme in South Fulham. The houses are spectacular! It’s an all-new address called Hurlingham Terrace. The houses are fully kitted out and overlook the sports club and tennis courts accessible by the residents. It is a truly unique offering for the area.

Are there any areas in South West London that buyers should invest in now? Obviously I’m Fulham biased… but we can’t deny that the integration of the Crossrail isn’t going to have an effect on certain areas. Ealing seems to be on the tips of tongues at the moment! What are your market predictions for Chelsea and Fulham in the coming months? Fair, I would say. We can no doubt expect increased buyer activity towards the end of the year with a steady transaction rate. I don’t think we will see any dramatic price movements for the remainder of this year. The new year usually brings a new energy to the market place (unless you have an election following shortly afterwards!).

Are there any new builds that will be starting shortly that you’ve recently been made aware of? Attached to the seven house scheme I mentioned earlier, there will be a second phase of 24 high-end apartments, some overlooking Hurlingham Park, aptly named The Hurlingham Park Apartments. Again, these will be an exclusive offering to the area, which we are very excited about.

IT’S BEEN A BIG YEAR FOR ASPIRE... MOVING FORWARD, WE HAVE SOME BIG PLANS ON THE WAY

What’s next for Aspire? Any exciting projects in the pipeline? It’s been a big year for Aspire. We’ve opened a successful Riverside department and completely rebranded. This has had an amazing effect on our business. Moving forward, we have some big plans on the way but nothing I can speak about at this current moment in time – watch this space! ◆

T

he lettings market has enjoyed brisk summer trading and has bounced back after a slow start to the year. This momentum looks set to continue through the autumn with a noticeable increase in corporate activity. As always pricing and presentation are key especially as prospective tenants are not as area specific so they once were and so competition is strong. Landlords need to be ready to consider offers because if they wait around the tenants will offer elsewhere. More and more corporate tenants are looking for professionally managed properties. For this reason and due to increased regulations and obligations to maintain and repair and the tighter timescales to conform many of our landlords are choosing our fully managed service. ◆  Bective Leslie Marsh Notting Hill, 020 7795 4288;

ctivity is now picking up in the autumn market with 10% more properties being available for sale than this time last year. This is good news for those thinking of moving, giving greater choice while supplies last. Those who wish to move before Christmas need to get their skates on! According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders, mortgage lending hit a seven year high in July, showing there is plenty of activity in the property market, especially as this doesn’t take into consideration cash purchasers. Whilst there has been recent turbulence in the global stock market, from what I read the underlying British economy is strong and continuing to recover. Inflation remains lower than the Bank of England’s target, though it is predicted to rise, although now

unlikely until later next year. The cost of living, according to the official Consumer Prices Index, has not risen in the past six months. This, coupled with crude oil being the cheapest it has been for six years, keeping petrol prices low, means that we should be feeling wealthier, with more disposable income, perhaps reflected by the boom in car sales. Continuing low interest rates should help the British economy grow and continue to stabilise. These are all very positive signs for the property market going forward. Sentiment is very important in our market, and in recent weeks activity levels have started to reflect the shift back to confidence in prime London property. Demand, which has been muted for various reasons since last year, is certainly coming back as buyers look to ensure their home suits their current and future needs.

Richard Going Head of Flats South Kensington

This initially manifested itself as properties, which had been struggling to find buyers previously, started to sell. Interestingly, these sales are often to buyers who inspected previously, and are now more motivated to actually buy. We have noted that two recent sealed bids we conducted in Chelsea set record prices, driven in the main by developers who are more optimistic about future prices. As stock levels are now improving, buyers have more choice, and this will help release further stock which has been blocked due to lack of suitable property for the onwards purchase. This virtuous circle is welcome as liquidity has been the issue for most in recent months. If you are planning to sell, now is the time to talk to us.
