Iowe some of my ex-colleagues an apology. Probably around a decade ago, I truly hated working on any festive issues. A quirk of the publishing world meant we were discussing turkey and trimmings, and parties and presents, in September – so when Christmas actually came around, I felt I had already lived it. So every time the Christmas issue planning meeting was called, I was a right old Scrooge and know I killed the good vibes. You live and learn. A lot has happened in the ten years since – especially the last couple of years, in particular – that anything that is designed to put a smile on your face should really do just that. Even though this isn't the actual Christmas issue, we have produced a special section looking at the early events in November to kick off the festive season in Hertfordshire. You see, I love it so much I do two festive issues now.

Elsewhere, we have more good vibes to share. We meet up with Princes to Kings, two brothers based in St Albans who are causing a stir on the music scene, and then popped along to Hertford to have a cup of tea with the Mayor. Then it's on to Tring as we find out more about unique fashion brand, House Thirteen, and celebrate the 30th anniversary of Tring Brewery. Cheers!

BAND OF BROTHERS

Surprises come in the strangest of places and when brothers Finley (Finn), Zac and Josh Pile found themselves centre stage on Michael McIntyre’s Big Show it was a bolt out of the blue.

The trio were nominated by their mum Becky and eldest brother Luke to perform Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars as Unexpected Stars of the Show on the BBC primetime programme. The threesome were led to believe that they were spending the day at an escape room in London.

“That show is something we’ll remember forever and was one of the best days of our lives. We were in shock and performing in front of the Palladium was amazing,” reflects 19-year-old Finn as he recalls their biggest performance to date in 2019. “We chatted to Michael, and he was really nice, and we even saw The Chase. Zac and I are huge

fans! There was so much going through our heads it’s hard to describe the feeling.”

The three brothers formed Princes to Kings in 2015 to raise awareness and funds for epilepsy research as their older brother, Luke, 25, who lives in residential care, has a severe and complex form of the condition. They have since performed in London and Hertfordshire, on TV shows like Blue Peter, and most recently at the Camden Assembly, raising thousands of pounds.

Last year 22-year-old Josh left the band to pursue other passions leaving Finn and Zac to continue writing and producing music. Their first EP, Back Before Dusk, has since amassed 150,000 Spotify streams.

Now, the humble duo is determined to grow their talent and take it to the next level. “We produce music in a small room in our house – it used to be my bedroom, but it’s now our studio,” explains Finn.

“It’s brilliant as we both live at home in St Albans, and we don’t need to travel

up to London. At the weekends we wake up and get to work straightaway. We film a lot of social media content at home and perform in our garden.

“Zac and I have similar interests and passions and we just love to create; I can’t remember a time when we’ve argued about music making. People have said they’ve never seen two brothers get on so well. We know each other so well, it makes it easier. It just works,” Finn smiles.

Growing and shaping a sound is an exciting prospect for the pair who live on the edge of St Albans, near Highfield Park, where they escape to play football in between school, work, and music. They chat excitedly about the eclectic range of music they’re currently listening to – from Phoebe Bridgers to The Japanese House and The Weeknd.

“The Weeknd is incredible and so nuanced, it doesn’t fall into formulaic patterns in pop music. We’re really

into Bon Iver, Damien Rice, Elliott Smith, and Death Cab for Cutie too – we are exploring intimate, acoustic writing styles,” enthuses Finn.

“Mum and dad are into their music, and we’ve grown up listening to the likes of Crowded House, Radiohead, REM, and The Beatles. We love anything from Debussy to Justin Bieber. Our music has a sort of coming-of-age and nostalgic feel. Our sound is always changing, and we don’t want to be constricted by a certain genre,” Finn continues.

Listening to their tracks reveals a whimsical, hopeful yet wistful edge – a maturing sound for the brothers. “Our track More and More is nostalgic, the words ‘how

the summer goes so damn fast’ was about exploring lost time and the instrumental section encapsulates that,” Zac explains.

Music has been in their veins since they were little; their mum has a degree in music and encouraged violin and piano lessons from an early age. “I decided to learn the drums as I connect with that instrument,” says Finn. Zac, 17, adds: “I had one guitar lesson and I decided to play – so I picked it up, but it’s trial and error. During lockdown I was teaching myself. Our mum wrote a lot of music, but didn’t have confidence to perform – she has always encouraged us. She plays the violin on our track Love You the Same, which is special.”

“We’re not afraid to try something new

and the only way you learn is by getting it wrong. It’s great to creatively push ourselves and tap into whatever we feel connected to,” adds Zac, who won BBC Young Composer of The Year Award in 2020.

It’s early days, but with a slew of songs under their belt and “plenty more to come” next year, the future looks bright for the selfdeprecating and accomplished pair. Finn focuses on music full-time alongside various acting jobs and Zac finishes at Sandringham School in 2023. “I am not going to university, and I am looking forward to next year so I can focus on creating music. School has been di cult, I found out I had dyspraxia when I was younger, and I struggled. It’s good to have music stu planned. I am trying not to wish school away,” Zac laughs.

A growing fan base is something they embrace, and love being recognised in the street.

“We have lots of fans in Asia, the US and all over the world,” adds Finn. “It’s hard to promote music as everyone is trying to get people’s attention on social media, it’s a busy space. I am grateful that we can do live streams and respond to messages.

“We played a gig at The Ned in London recently and a fan approached us – we recognised him from our Camden shows,” ends Finn. “It’s great to know that people follow you around from show to show. We went to see To Kill a Mockingbird, and someone messaged to say they recognised us outside the theatre. It’s a nice feeling.”

Q Were you into politics from an early age?

A Not formally. I did not think of my interest as ‘politics’, but always had an interest in the community around me.

Q Before becoming Mayor of Hertford, where has your political journey taken you?

A My interest in the community led me to become a magistrate. My experiences of the justice system and my personal life helped me formalise my interest in helping the community and that developed into politics.

So, in 2019 I stood successfully as a local councillor in the Kingsmead Ward of Hertford.

Q How did it feel to be elected Mayor of Hertford back in May?

A I was very honoured. It is a role which has many traditions and ceremony that are part of the history of Hertford, so it has been amazing to become part of that history. Yet I also believe passionately in the community of Hertford, and it has given me an opportunity to thank so many people who make our Hertford community so special.

Q How has it been in the time since then?

A It has been extremely busy. As Mayor I have been able to attend many functions –many of them celebrating the service and commitment of individuals who have been a crucial part of Hertford life – its interests, businesses, and charities. It has been a real pleasure with so much positive inspiration.

The Queen’s Jubilee was a highlight with the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss, The High Sheri of Hertfordshire Mrs Sally Burton, Lord Salisbury of Hatfield House and Chairman of Hertfordshire County Council Mrs Annie Brewster, in attendance, just to name a few, to celebrate the Beacon Lighting at Hertford Castle. Obviously, this was followed by the Remembrance Service for our late Queen Elizabeth II and the Proclamation of our new King, Charles III. It has been a period of great change.

CULTURE • PROFILE Get to know… Cllr SUSAN BARBER MADAM MAYOR OF HERTFORD PHOTO: SCOTT GARRODBLACK KITE PRODUCTIONS

Q What do you hope to achieve in the position?

A My aim as Mayor was to not only fulfil the traditional role as representative of Hertford, but also to try to be part of the healing process for our community. The previous years of Covid lockdowns left a fragmented community and many people felt so isolated. I hope to encourage people to join together and to reconnect with Hertford, its people and all of the activities and services on o er. The Mayor hosts a Vintage Tea Party at the Castle for the over 75s living in the community. This is done with the help of all the sta and o cers that work at the Castle, friends of Hertford Castle, Fellow Councillors and local businesses.

Q Tell us about your chosen charities…

A My chosen charities are HDOS – Hertford Dramatic Operatic Society – and Future Hope. Both of these charities provide interest and support to people in Hertford. HDOS spans so many age groups. It encourages people to step into another world either on stage or o gaining new skills and confidence whilst providing great entertainment for all in Hertford. Future Hope provides vital support to our local young people aged 11-19, helping empower them to see positive futures and reach their full potential. I believe it is essential that our young people get the support to help them develop into the amazing adults they can be.

Q You have lived in Hertford for over four decades. What do you love about it?

A I love so many things about Hertford. The countryside walks over the Kingsmead with our two West Highland Terrier dogs

and public footpaths are a great contrast to the hub of town life. The people are friendly and supportive and although I came here as an adult it feels like home. The town is in a period of regeneration, and I am excited to see the benefits of this with the new shopping area in the newly named Lea Wharf and the new Hertford Theatre, which will become a thriving hub for arts and culture. Hertford is a flourishing place with so much to do and I try to get involved in as much as possible. Hertford has the second biggest night-time economy in Hertfordshire with restaurants, pubs clubs and music venues.

Q Where are your three favourite places in the area, or further afield in Hertfordshire?

A I think my first area are the town's green spaces: Hartham Common, Kingsmead, Cole Green Way and Panshanger Park on the outskirts of Hertford. It’s full of happy positive emotions of walking and having some quiet time, playing with my children when they were younger, and all this adds to a sense of optimism. Another favourite place is Hatfield House – it’s a great historic home and we are fortunate to have Lord Salisbury who is really interested in the Hertfordshire community. I am really looking forward to the Christmas Lights event there. I think my third favourite place is the theatre. Although ours is under construction, I have previously been a strong supporter of all events there. I am so looking forward to its completion with the new theatre and cinemas – it’s a place of fun and entertainment, which I love.

Q Outside of politics, what do you love to spend your time doing?

A I am a family person at heart, and I love spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy socialising whether out for a meal in one of our great local restaurants or wine tasting or quizzes. Dogs have always been a key part of my life since childhood and love you unreservedly. I love going to London sightseeing and we are lucky to be so close with two main line stations. I enjoy ballroom dancing and going to the gym as well as Pilates classes. I honestly love being busy and fill my life with as much as possible.

A CGI OF HOW THE REGENERATED HERTFORD THEATRE WILL LOOK

The cost of living has been rising since December 2021 where inflation hit a high of 5.4% in 30 years. There has never been a better time to plan for your financial future than now. A way that you can start planning is by becoming a member of Hertsavers Credit Union.

What is a credit union?

Credit unions are not-for-profit friendly societies that are owned and operated by their members for the benefit of their members.

According to the CEO of the Association of British Credit Unions (Abcul), “Credit unions are building financial resilience in households and communities all across the country and helping consumers manage their finances in a hugely positive way.”

Who is Hertsavers Credit Union?

Hertsavers Credit Union serves anyone who lives or works in Hertfordshire. Hertsavers is owned and controlled by members, so any surplus made goes back to their members as dividends.

Like all credit unions, they are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) that protects savings of up to the value of £85,000. Therefore, you can be reassured that your money is safe.

They also o er a Salary Saving Scheme where members can automatically save through their payroll. You can see their partner employers through the Hertsavers’ website. Employers or organisations that want to operate a payroll/salary savings scheme should email them at o ce@hertsavers.co.uk.

Who runs Hertsavers?

Hertsavers is governed by a Board of volunteer Directors elected at an Annual General Meeting. They all either live or work in Hertfordshire. They develop their business plan and oversee financial progress and are responsible for the sta that interface with members.

Here’s what their members have to say: “I was able to save for the first time, I am no more worried about high interest rates on loans compared to loans taken out in the past from other lenders. It has reduced money worries overall.”

It's a WRAP

Christmas seems to start earlier every year. Here are a host of reasons to get into the festive spirit in November

LIGHT SHOW

The county always comes up trumps when attentions turn to the o cial switch on of the Christmas lights. The Mayor of Hertford, who we chatted to earlier in this issue, also discussed the area's event. “I am really looking forward to switching on the Christmas Lights this year on 25 November – it’s a real honour and such a fun time,” she says. “The Hertford Christmas Gala and Christmas Market runs for the three days over that weekend, and I love the warmth and fun of the festive period. I also hope to spend time at church, especially St Andrews Church where Alan Stewart, the Mayor’s Chaplain, will be giving guidance and wisdom about the meaning of Christmas. I am looking forward to so much of what Hertford has to o er this Christmas – I hope that many people come to the area to join us.”

There are far too many other events for us to cover here, but at a glance 19 November sees the lights being switched on at Hitchin Market Place; the Annual London Colney Christmas Light Switch On & Christmas Market will be held on Sunday 4 December 2022, where you can join the community on the High Street for a festive celebration with carol singing, mulled wine, food, dance displays, a Christmas market and more; and Stevenage Town Centre have announced their annual Christmas Light Switch On will return this year on Thursday 24 November.

IT’S IN FRONT OF YOU

Of course, Christmas isn’t Christmas without a family visit to the local panto – and there are some crackers to look forward to this year. On 25 November, Cinderella opens at the Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre, and promises to o er an intriguing twist to the age-old story.

The Sandpit Theatre have announced their panto, Hansel & Gretel, which will be on at The Ridgeway, St Albans, from 17 December. A fun-filled, sugar-fuelled, familyfriendly pantomime adventure that reminds us all not to take candy from strangers (even if they wow you with a fabulous song and dance number!). Join ‘Hansel and Gretel’ in a new take on an old favourite, with tasty tunes, magical mayhem and colourful characters (including a seven foot yeti).

At the Radlett Centre from 10 December, Upstage Productions presents Jack and

the Beanstalk as their 2022 traditional family pantomime. They promise dazzling choreography, stunning sets, uplifting live music, glamourous costumes and, of course, plenty of audience participation. Follow Jack as he climbs miles high, defeats a giant and makes some new “golden” friends.

Then, from 9 December, Wyllyotts Theatre in association with Jordan Productions presents Dick Whittington and his Cat. From the streets of London to a spectacular voyage over the seven seas to Morocco, join Dick Whittington, his acrobatic cat and a cast of crazy characters on the adventure of a lifetime.

ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR Worrying already about what to buy your great aunt? Want to uncover something unique for your festive home this year?

There are some top events opening in November that will throw up a whole host of inspiration. Take, for example, the Harpenden Farmers’ Market and Christmas Carnival on 27 November, which will include the fantastic monthly Farmers’ Market o erings, Santa's Grotto and much more.

A host of local artisans will be taking part in the Childwickbury Christmas Fair near Harpenden and St Albans from 26-27 November. The two-day event will feature lots of independent businesses, artists, food and much more. Perfect for all the family (and dogs are welcome too).

Clearly the weekend for it all to happen, also on 27 November is the Redbourn Christmas Market. Head along and shop local for Christmas, supporting local businesses and artists at this festive, not-for-profit event. The people behind this fabulous event are all volunteers and all funds raised are used to put into running the event and pay for the Christmas light display.

Side Pocket for a Toad, Colley’s Dog, Death or Glory, Tea Kettle Stout… Whenever Tring Brewery announce the launch of a new creation, we wait with bated breath to not only taste it, but to see what name they have given it. But it’s the area in their company name – Tring – that is perhaps the most important element to what has made this brewery so special for 30 years.

“The local community is paramount to our mission,” says Jared Ward, one of the team at Tring Brewery. “The reason we keep a local tie via theme is to connect with the communities around us and keep the storytelling of Hertfordshire alive. Aside from local storytelling, we love to help charities and non-profit

organisations every year with our ‘Charity of Choice’ programme. This sees a new partner announced each year, brewing 12 collaborative beers with them to raise funds and awareness for the cause.” Rennie Grove Hospice Care has been reaping the benefits as their charity partner for 2022.

Launched in 1992, Tring Brewery followed on from a history of beer swilling in the area, as Jared explains. “Tring received its Mark Town charter in the year 1315 and is thought to be one of many communities that were established along the ancient Ridgeway trading route. To this extent, brewing is thought to have taken place in the area for a very long time, pre-dating recorded history and mostly undertaken in a domestic environment – that is to say, brewed at home.

“It was not until the 1800s that Tring saw the emergence of commercial breweries

in the town,” Jared continues, “as smart businessmen built brewhouses that would slake the thirsts of the many labourers that descended on the town to forge cuttings for the London to Birmingham railway line. By the late 1800s, there were at least three commercial breweries operating in the town, along with many pubs that likely brewed on site – the locals certainly got through it back then! The last of these commercial breweries to produce beer was Rodwells, who ceased brewing operations back in 1925.”

The town remained ‘dry’ of alcohol production until Richard Shardlow tapped into the same thing that inspired the smart businessmen of the 19th century. “He learnt to brew at Ruddles, Devinish and Greene King before joining his father Peter on a tour of the world, building commercial brewhouses under the company banner ‘Brewing Design Services’,” Jared says of Tring Brewery’s one of two directors. “Having built around 300 microbreweries worldwide, Richard fancied a kit of his own to satisfy thirsty palates that had been waiting for their own local brewer for over 50 years.”

Despite fierce competition, the brewery’s quality and ties to the local area soon set it apart. “Quality was achieved with top-ofthe-range equipment installations along with many years of experience brewing at top-flight commercial breweries,” Jared says on how they captured beer drinkers’ imaginations. “A local tie was

achieved with branding that told the story of folklore and history in the Home Counties, specifically Hertfordshire.”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Fast forward to 2022 and the question is on the tip of my tongue: how do they create a new beer? “These days, new beers are created using our three decades’ worth of brewing experience, starting with a known style in mind, then adding our own little spin to finish the brew,” Jared says.

“We all do our homework by drinking di erent brews when travelling in the Home Counties and beyond, so if we find a style or technique we think works, then we’ll be sure to give it a go ourselves.”

And the quirky names? “Post-brew, our team thinks of a name and brand that keep on theme with Home Counties history. This is the hardest part, though also the most

fun for the team. Once a name is decided, this is sent with an art moodboard to our designer who works with us closely to nail on the perfect pump-clip. The beer is then complete and ready for a photoshoot before it is released to the public.”

It’s been an all round exciting year for Tring Brewery, 30th anniversary aside.

“This year has so far been benchmarked by the release of Alchemist Lager and Watford FC’s ‘Centenary Ale’,” Jared says excitedly.

“Alchemist is our first ever lager, brewed with hops from both the Czech Republic and Germany. We’ve almost reached capacity with the current size of Alchemist brews, so are looking to up production already. Exciting times lay ahead for what we hope to become a brewery flagship product.

“‘Centenary Ale’ was brewed and released in August to mark the 100th year of football played at Vicarage Road Stadium

Three of the best

JARED WARD PICKS OUT A TRIO OF BEERS SPECIAL TO HIM AND TRING BREWERY

Ridgeway Bitter was the first beer that we ever brewed and we are elated that its popularity has endured for three decades. By style, Ridgeway is a Traditional English Bitter, a beer that is intrinsically linked to our unique history of cask conditioned ale. With this, we are thrilled that drinkers support and consume our delicious example of national beer heritage.

Death or Glory is our strongest beer at 7.2% and also our most award-winning. Death or Glory is a barley wine, which stylistically means it has an unctuous malt character, sweet, smooth and robust. These factors mean that the beer does very well when sent to industry competitions, as it leaves a lasting impression on the tasters, even when served in a modest samplesize judging measurement. We know that awards do not make a brewery, though they do affirm our mission of producing the highest quality beers. We’ll always raise a glass to that.

• Last but not least is Side Pocket for a Toad , our eccentrically named, session-strength golden ale, dethroning Ridgeway Bitter as our flagship beer not long a er it was first brewed in the year 2000. Going from strength to strength, Side Pocket for a Toad is one of the best-selling ales in Hertfordshire today and its growth shows no sign of slowing. Whilst we’re very excited for the growth of our progressive brews and our new signature lager, Side Pocket and Ridgeway will always be our stalwarts, championing cask-conditioned ale always.

by Watford Football Club,” Jared continues. “It was amazing to work directly with the club as well as one of their player legends (Tommy Smith) to produce a luscious golden ale that pays homage to ‘The Golden Boys’. This launch saw us connect with Watford FC’s fanbase both locally and globally, an audience of millions that have shown an amazing reception to the beer. The first batch has flown o the shelves!”

The future, then, looks as bright as the past has been fun. But there’s still time in 2022 for an old name to make a return: yes, Tring Brewery’s Santa’s Little Helper will be back for the festive season. Cheers!

Following the floods of December 2020, the exciting opening of The Kingfisher, riverside pub with rooms, couldn’t have come soon enough. What was the Barns Hotel was transformed into The Kingfisher, a stylish riverside pub with rooms serving cask ales, great wines and delicious seasonal dishes.

The new menu has a focus on local produce and with many standout suppliers of quality produce on the doorstep, wherever possible they will be sourcing locally. Fresh fruit and vegetables will be coming from AB Fruits of Bedford and meat from Woburn County Foods. It doesn’t stop there – there are also amazing wines on the wine list coming from Warden Abbey Vineyard and guest ales from around the county.

Since the opening in August, the team, led by General Manager Chris Roberts, have settled in and are o ering fabulous riverside service coupled with a menu to match. Think juicy burgers, freshly made pizzas and chef’s signature dishes with a wide selection of vegetarian dishes. There are also delicious sharing platters, including a traditional style ploughmans.

Inside, the old restaurant is unrecognisable and has been turned into a sleek and stylish pub that you would normally see on the hip London scene. A stunning centrepiece bar is surrounded by huge, comfy banquet seating and a combination of side rooms each with individual décor.

The 49 bedrooms have had a refresh and are welcoming back travellers from far and wide. There are three suites at the hotel – all located in the historic part of the building – which are quirky, unique, and

why we love them! The Holt boasts a lime green décor and stunning four poster bed. Dragonfly has beautiful views over the River Great Ouse, and The Kingfisher is the most impressive room in the house – think the penthouse. Expect original mullion windows, a period fireplace and for additional romance and relaxation, a fabulous roll top bath.

The stunning 13th century barn has been relaunched as The Tithe Barn, Bedford and continues to host weddings and events. Managing Director, Andrew McKenzie, says: “The Kingfisher is the result of a complete transformation of our building and we hope it will become the place to be on the Bedford dining scene. A bold and creative re-design coupled with locally sourced, imaginative food and drinks, served by a great team of happy, smiling people will be a great draw for guests both old and new.”

HOUSE THIRTEEN

House Thirteen is a British-designed, Bali-crafted jewellery and accessories label. Each piece is handmade by skilled craftsmen in Bali with all jewellery sculpted from high-quality sterling silver with gold pieces then dipped in 18k gold. Over the page we interview the Tring-based founder to discover what inspired her. housethirteen.com

Lucky for SOME

Q What inspired you to launch House Thirteen?

A I had always felt that I had a creative side, but was hopeless at drawing, so I thought the artistic life may not be for me. When I moved to Bali, the island had such a creative energy and I was surrounded by friends doing their own thing so when I came to a natural crossroads in my life, I began to think about what I really wanted to do. As Bali has a strong silversmithing heritage I decided to take a couple of classes purely to make some pieces for myself, and I absolutely loved it. I started designing more pieces with the view that if anyone else liked them then great, and if not then I would be happy to create them for myself. Thankfully they did and I not only found my artistic outlet, but also what would eventually become my business.

Q How did you want the label to be di erent?

A I wanted the design and ethics of the business to be the real di erentiators of the brand. Design-wise, I wanted to create beautiful high-quality pieces that are also super wearable and, to be honest, easy. Everything is created with adaptability in mind so that the wearer can get the most

out of it, whilst also having a strong design element. On the flip-side, I’m very mindful about how I do business. I work closely with my workshop in Bali to ensure everything is ethically handmade from largely recycled materials, my packaging is all eco-friendly and I only create small batches. I believe that nothing I put into the world should out-live me.

Q In a nutshell, what do you o er?

A I o er a range of sterling silver and 18k gold-plated jewellery, alongside a

collection of soy candles that I make myself. The jewellery is a mix of geometric, Art Deco-inspired designs and more simple, everyday pieces. The candles are a recent addition in five unique shapes, made from sustainable materials and o ering something di erent to complement the jewellery.

Q What inspires your designs?

A My designs were inspired by a work trip to Miami a few years back.

I fell in love with the bubble-gum Art Deco buildings that line South Beach and wanted to bring some of those geometric elements into my jewellery. But instead of being an “Art Deco” themed collection I wanted the designs to e ortlessly fit in with life today, just like those buildings do. I’m the kind

of person who wears the same pieces of jewellery constantly – my necklace hasn’t left my neck for years! – so I wanted to also create a range of everyday “Foundation” pieces that you could mix and match.

Q What’s new for AW22?

A I’ve been playing with some new candle scents for Christmas along with easy-gifting sets. I’m hoping to add new jewellery next year, including some personalisation options. I have a toddler and am pregnant with my second so I’m waiting until I have the headspace to really get lost in design. I’d love to do a charity piece too and have a design in mind.

Q When did you move to Tring and what do you love about the area?

A I moved to Tring in spring 2021 with my partner and baby son. We moved from London, but I grew up in Berkhamsted – the brand is actually named after my childhood home there. So I was already really familiar with the area… or so I thought! Tring has been full of surprises and I’m really loving it here. There is a really strong sense of community in the town, with amazing events and fairs, but also a large supportive business community all working on really interesting ventures in their own way. I also love being close to nature. My garden looks out onto a field and Tring Reservoirs is just up the road, so I feel very lucky to live somewhere that combines all of this.

Q How do you see the future of House Thirteen evolving?

A I see the future of House Thirteen being about expanding my product o ering and growing my audience, whilst retaining that family-run, personal approach and staying on top of sustainable considerations. I would really like to get more into the local scene, finding local stockists and raising awareness in the area. I’m excited to see how it evolves, especially in such a supportive local community.

BALLROOM SPIRIT Pronovias

There are plenty of ballgown and regal styles in the mix for the season to come, and some of our favourites have a 1950s vibe. This Hollywood-worthy number from Pronovias taps into that trend. It channels this season's focus on big sleeves – many, like these, are detachable for a quick change of style. It also introduces a welcome pop of glitter on the bodice and is created from rich silk in soft pastel pink.

There are plenty of cool bridal looks for the resort or high-summer celebrations among the new season designer collections, but this shift dress caught our eye for its wearability and throw-on elegance. Pockets add a laidback vibe to a dress that would earn its keep on honeymoon too.

Out with the old and in with the lab grown? Baker Brothers Diamonds on an ever-growing trend in rings

62 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Getting engaged is a wonderful time for any couple. When it comes tothat all-important ring choice, we at Baker Brothers have noticed there are two factors that matter most. For men, the cost of a diamond takes precedence in the purchase decision for an engagement ring, followed by the quality.

For women, it’s the design that matters, followed by the diamond quality and carat size, which goes hand-in-hand with cost.

Couples today have an array of styles to choose from, far more so than their parents and grandparents, such as trilogy, halo or mixed gemstone combinations. Many also opt to have some created uniquely for them, using bespoke design services such as those available with us.

However, a traditional claw set solitaire diamond on an elegant platinum or gold band is always a firm favourite and

now, more than ever, we see couples who want a ring that scintillates and sparkles from across the room.

So, if quality, size and a ordability are the all-important elements when choosing a diamond engagement ring, how do you make sure you’re getting the best for your buck?

Our advice is to question, question, question!

Don’t be afraid to ask about the diamond in your ring, it’s a big investment after all. As a loose diamond and gemstone specialist, we love nothing better than giving you a jewellers loupe (a small magnifying glass) so you can see your diamond up close.

Many of our couples want natural diamonds, those little sparkling creations of nature just have a romanticism all of their own as no two diamonds are the same, meaning you really are getting something truly unique. Sometimes, however, budgets do not always stretch to the big gemstone some dream of having, so what can you do?

You have a few options; you can look at di erent grades of diamond giving you a wider choice, or you could consider a Lab Grown Diamond. Lab Grown Diamonds have been a hot topic this year, but many people are not sure what they’re all about.

Essentially, a Lab Grown Diamond is chemically the same as its natural counterpart. They have cut, colour and clarity grades, just like Natural Diamonds, but rather than developing

over millennia deep within the Earth’s crust, they are instead manufactured in a controlled laboratory environment.

This process means that Lab Grown Diamonds can cost approximately 30-50% less than a Natural Diamond, which means you can buy a larger gemstone that has the cut, colour and clarity you desire.

We source Lab Grown Diamonds directly from the highest quality manufacturers and then run them through our strict inspection process to ensure they meet the Baker Brothers standard.

Once checked and chosen by our certified Diamond Specialists, our Lab Grown Diamonds can be mounted in any style from the glistening splendour of a solitaire to the sparkling brilliance of a halo with pave-set shoulders.

Lab Grown Diamonds are worth considering when looking for an engagement ring. They are an a ordable choice and mean you can shop for a large diamond at a di erent price tag; giving you the opportunity to splurge more on the proposal plans!

OF LIFE Circle

The symbolism of a wedding ring is closely tied in with the symbolism of its shape – a circle.

Throughout history circles have been used as a metaphor for perfection, infinity, eternity and timelessness. They are symbols not only of love, but eternal love.

Though giving a ring as a sign of love and fidelity is an ancient tradition, it has evolved over the centuries. Ancient Egyptians were among the first to give wedding rings, around 6,000 years ago. Back then, they were most often made of leather, ivory or bone. As metal rings began to become more popular, they were made of inexpensive metals like iron. Gold rings would be worn only by the wealthy. The modern wedding ring exchange, as we know it, is a fairly recent tradition.

Throughout history, it was the bride who wore a ring. Wedding rings were seen almost as a mark of ownership, rather than a symbol of committed partnership like they are today. Thankfully, times have changed!

Modern rings are more unique and diverse than ever. While plenty of couples choose a classic diamond engagement ring, and wedding rings made of traditional gold, the options certainly don't end there.

Some ancient designs influence our modern tastes and my favourite of these is the Gimmel ring. These were given by husbands to wives during the 16th and 17th centuries. Designed with two interlocking bands that could be separated, the man gave half the ring to his betrothed when they got engaged and completed the set on their

wedding day, two separate entities joined as one! At Galio we have contemporary versions of this ring from one of our favourite German designers, Niessing.

But how do you decide on what will be the most lasting element of your wedding day? At Galio we believe it is an emotional decision, and it has to feel right and work for your lifestyle. Our rings feel di erent, they have the ‘X’ factor, the thing that makes you feel you have made the right decision. Whatever you choose needs to suit your style and complement your other jewellery. Our consultants are trained to listen to your needs and partner you with the best choice of wedding ring. The smile our clients radiate when they find ‘the perfect ring’ is all that matters.

Whether you’re choosing an engagement ring or your wedding bands, here at Galio we o er a unique and truly welcoming experience. We can guide you to find the ultimate expression of your love, the ring that tells your story. We specialise in unique and eye-catching designs from both our own designers and global experts: Hearts on Fire, Niessing, Christian Bauer, Henrich & Denzel.

If you are inspired to commission something unique, we can also o er a bespoke design from our in-house designer. Together we can create the perfect ring to celebrate your relationship and tell your story.

SHEDDING LIGHT

Alittle-known fact is that 18 October is World Menopause day. Fifty per cent of the population will go through this phenomenon at some point in their life, yet little is known about it and even less done to mitigate the problems it causes. Menopause is the cessation of a woman’s natural monthly menstrual cycle at an average age is 51. However, it’s not just periods that stop, lots of other symptoms and complications can occur. It is known that after the menopause women are more at risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and several other major conditions. An all-party parliamentary group (APPG) has launched an investigation into the diagnosis and management of the menopause, which remains a postcode lottery. Women are su ering horrendous symptoms and have no access to diagnosis let alone treatment (which may include hormone replacement therapy - HRT). Modern HRT is easy, convenient and very safe to take, yet it is still surrounded by many misconceptions. The APPG have advised that: “The NHS must implement a health check for all women at the age of 45, in a similar way to cervical cancer smears.” However, this remains some way o .

All the TRIMMINGS

Adding a trimming to your furnishings adds that extra wow factor, elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary, and they are very much in vogue!

Starting with curtains and blinds, you can use the plainest of fabrics, and by the addition of a decorative braid will elevate the curtains and trick the eye in making the room feel higher in proportion.

If you are looking for something a little more subtle, or traditional, decorative tassel fringes look lovely when added to the edge of a curtain, or choose a drop bead, ru e or fan edge trim in a complementary colour to your fabric, and use a tieback for an elegant drape to maximise the impact.

Likewise on pelmets, a plain straight pelmet with a braid along the edge, or framing the box, is a very smart look. With shaped pelmets opt for a contrasting cord piping to really accentuate its shape and use it to trace its form and continue it down onto the curtain for maximum designer impact. Bobble fringes are a lovely way to make your room more playful, or soften it with a pretty fan edging.

A very popular trend is trimmed cushions. Plain fabrics can be used as a base for the most beautiful of braids, sitting these on a plain sofa and they will become a focal point. There are also a plethora of gorgeous ruches, and lovely flu y trims that can be used for piping cushions, and also great on headboards. Together with the more traditional tassel fringing or the delightful pompom trim is equally at home on cushions as it is on curtains. Leather, or faux leather is also a smart alternative to traditional fabric piping.

Fringes not only work to introduce movement and texture into a scheme, they can also be used to disguise unloved features such as sofa legs. Without them, furnishings will look good but with them, they will look outstanding.

Another great design detail to finish o your lampshade neatly, trimmings can be attached to cover the fabric edging of your made to measure shade.

Choose colours to complement the fabric of your shade or lamp base and look to beaded fringe or intricate gimp for a more traditional feel. Alternatively, coloured braids, playful tassels and extra-long fringing can transform your lighting into a fun and modern centrepiece within your room that will double up as a design feature that is completely unique to your home.

Adding trimmings to your furnishing will help to tie these standalone pieces into the rest of your scheme. Whether it be through pattern or colour, trimmings can establish a connection between multiple items that appear within a single scheme.

MAKE A

PLEDGE

Are you taking the Veg Pledge this month? You may or may not know that Veg Pledge is an initiative founded by Cancer Research UK to invite you to ditch meat for a month. Not only is it a way to help raise funds for the charity, but also to educate and remind us of the importance of vegetables and fruit for our health, as well as helping the environment.

Whilst some of you reading this will already have vegetarian or vegan diets, some families may be interested in taking part in Veg Pledge. For others, it may not be suitable or recommended – or it may not be something with which you wish to participate. Whichever group you and your family might fall into, it is a good reminder of how important it is for our children to enjoy not only eating vegetables, but also to be involved in growing and cooking them – and, indeed, taking part in family mealtimes.

Children love to see things grow. Most families will have had experience of their small children growing cress seeds on cotton wool or blotting paper and seeing how quickly it grows. Even three-year-olds can harvest their crop of cress and eat the results of their labours in a sandwich.

As children grow older, why not provide a small patch in the garden, a window box or even an old bucket and let them buy a few packets of vegetable seeds. Such a seemingly simple task can bring joy, reward and also a sense of responsibility. If you don’t look after your seedlings or forget to water them, you quickly learn what happens! A couple of Christmases ago, I was given a wonderful surprise present of a beautiful wooden herb “theatre”, three tiered shelves with accompanying pots on which to grow herbs. I also shared the childlike joy of looking after my array of herbs and, sadly, learned what happens if you forget them for a few days.

If you want to bypass the growing phase, another idea is to go to the supermarket with your children and find a new and interesting vegetable each week. When our youngest child was little, that is exactly what we did.

It is amazing how many weird, wonderful and interesting fruits and vegetables lurk in supermarket racks that often go unnoticed – some were delicious, some not so delicious – and for others, we had to research how to cook them. It was a short, but fun phase and we both learned about all sorts of unusual fruit and vegetables.

And then, of course, comes the cooking and the eating. If you can find time,

even occasionally, to involve your young children in helping to prepare a meal (or, as they get older, cook an entire meal for the family), it is surprisingly rewarding – and educational – for all involved.

As we all know, eating together as a family, whatever the age of our children, is an important time together. Even though they are all grown up now, our increasingly

rare, family dinners are a highlight for us all. The dinners may be more sophisticated, the palates more discerning and certainly the glasses are filled with wine now, but those times are always special for Family Laidlaw.

So, take a few minutes to consider your Veg Pledge, not only for such an important cause, but also for the health benefits, the learning and the fun that it can bring to your family.

Heart of the MATTER

The Head of St Margaret’s School in Bushey on the evolution of Black Lives Matter and Everyone’s Invited in schools

Art and other creative outlets so often showcase what matters to young people today. Expression through creativity can help students to highlight personal struggles or address topics they are passionate about. At my school, there are also many elements of pride in heritage and of identity that come through via creative works. If you walk through the art department in my school right now, the impact of Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Everyone’s Invited (EI) is evident. In our photography rooms you will see images of protestors (which include some of our own student faces) and signposts with words like ‘She just wanted to walk home safely’. If you make your way into our Sixth Form art studio you will also see displays of A-level artwork, with students proudly displaying their black faces with Jamaican, Nigerian and Gambian flags superimposed across them.

FREEDOM OF OPINION

A year on since Sarah Everard’s life was taken, and a few years since the murder

of George Floyd, you can see an obvious knock-on impact of these incidents and other social movements in our schools today. Perhaps most significant, pupil voice has got louder. Fueled by the success of movements like BLM and EI, and by the fluency of their IT skills, young people feel more entitled to share their opinions on any topic important to them. While standing up for one’s beliefs in a respectful way is admirable, not all of this has been positive for schools, as it has led to discipline issues in some cases, which has been tougher to unpick with more children feeling able to share their views, sometimes with force.

As a result, PSHE programmes and pastoral sta in schools are having to respond and coach children around how

to convey their thoughts respectfully. The impact of this will have been felt across all classrooms, especially in English and RS lessons. Yet schools are also listening much harder to pupils. The EI movement tarnished many school reputations across the country. It revealed some traumatic issues that schools hadn’t known about or identified before.

SPEAKING UP

Regular drop-in sessions with Headteachers have been commonplace for many years in a bid to encourage pupils to speak up, but so too have other ways of eliciting views, such as questionnaires, pupil focus groups and bystander training to inspire even the most reticent child to speak up. This continues today and schools are continually having to find new ways of leaning into conversations and nurturing pupils to talk more. Pupil choice on everything from English texts to course content, assembly services through to lunch options, is a welcome enhancement to school.

Issues around feeling safe have had sharper focus since the EI movement and schools have had to think this through carefully. In my school we have thought

hard about this and have asked pupils to physically draw onto site maps to indicate where they feel safe and where they feel vulnerable, so that we can adapt our common spaces and our duty system. New toilets and changing areas along with newly refurbished library spaces have all been considered along with the style of furniture that might help alleviate these issues.

Further emphasis on how to handle intimate relationships as children get older has been important to explore, but in a way that is clear, open and respectful; it isn’t always easy, but it is welcome. Like many other schools, PSHE now has more time and energy dedicated to it and is part of joined up thinking across all that we do. Reflections

of pastoral sta is also considered as we adapt our PSHE o ering and the supportdriven parent events that sit alongside it.

CHANGE FOR GOOD

As a school we have ensured that all stakeholders have received diversity and inclusion training, which we will deliver again next year. We are looking hard at how we can ensure our sta and governors reflect our community and we are taking on the best advice we can in this area. There is still some way to go of course. Allowing pupils to run with societies that are important to them whether it is the LGBTQ+ group or a faith service of their choice, things have shifted

irreversibly for the good in schools.

Listening to our young people is key but, as ever, keeping up as parents is not easy. Strong pastoral settings in school are providing parents with help on how to navigate this period to best encourage, but also support their children. Next term my school will run a follow up event to previous parental pastoral webinars and events titled: What your teenager wants to tell you but can’t.

Thankfully schools are thinking more about their position on these issues today and how they can help in a positive way rather than simply reacting.

Lights trail at HATFIELD PARK

Get yourself into the festive spirit with an illuminating trip to this

Hertfordshire favourite

Tickets to Christmas at Hatfield Park, Hertfordshire, are now on sale for a new spectacular seasonal trail running between 25 November and 31 December 2022.

Built by Robert Cecil, in the grounds where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood, Jacobean Hatfield Park’s 42 acres of beautiful gardens and parkland is home to centuries of historical treasures. Now in the care of the 7th Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury, this stunning, historic house and its idyllic, enchanting gardens are open to all for guided tours or exploring at your own pace.

The picture-perfect gardens date from early 17th century, when Robert Cecil employed John Tradescant the Elder to collect plants from all over Europe from his new home. The trees, bulbs, plants and fruit trees, which had never before been grown in England, have crafted the inspiring and fragrant gardens you can explore and enjoy today.

Look forward to some precious time with friends and family as you discover sparkling tunnels of light, walk under giant baubles and beneath glistening trees drenched in jewel-like colour.

For a moment of reflection pause at mesmerising flickering flames in the fire garden, gaze at the larger-than-life illuminations and, to make a moment to remember, don’t forget to glimpse Father Christmas along the way.

The lights are choreographed to a soundtrack of much-loved seasonal music, transforming Hatfield’s majestic park into an instant winter wonderland. Matthew Findlay, Head of UK Trails for Sony Music/ Raymond Gubbay Ltd, says: “We are

thrilled to launch a unique new Christmas lights trail at this iconic historical house, our planning and preparation is well underway. There will be plenty to wow and surprise all visitors, young and old!”

Independent street food vendors bring a delicious twist with tasty treats on o er. Complete your walk under the stars with a spiced winter warmer or hot chocolate shared with friends and family. Everyone loves toasting a marshmallow over an open fire and the artisan marshmallow stall gives visitors the chance to warm their hands and enjoy this sweet outdoor tradition.

Christmas at Hatfield Park is brought to you by Sony Music. The trail is created by Culture Creative. See more at christmasathatfieldpark.co.uk
