ometimes when I’m putting together the magazine, I like to think of the places people will be when they read it. In July, I imagine that many readers will be sitting outside in the sunshine at a café, thumbing through the fashion shoot, lusting after the pretty floral dresses. Perhaps they’ll be at home packing, about to jet off on a European getaway for the weekend. Those picking it up in an estate agent’s office might be distracted from their house-hunting by our hunky lead interview or our brand spanking new men’s page. These are only guesses of course, but considering what we have in store this month, I’m pretty sure they’re well-founded. Just when you thought florals were out, they come storming back in as proven by our dreamy shoot this month on page 20, featuring Vilshenko, Jenny Packham and Nicholas Oakwell - oh, my. But where to wear these fabulous dresses? We
5 C&A_JULY15_EDS_LETTER.indd 5
can think of a few places – just take a peek at our European cities round-up on page 52. Choose between edgy Athens, vibrant Vienna and regal Rome for a weekend away to remember. Struggling to find a new favourite haunt this summer? We’ve visited some of the best cafés in the City on page 40 and discovered their specialities, from brief business breakfasts to long languid lunches. If the end of Game of Thrones Season 5 sent you into a tailspin of depression (as it did your editor) our interview with Kit Harington on page 12 should go some way to cheering you up – if only temporarily. Not a GoT fan? Then just enjoy the pictures. Wherever you’re reading this, I hope you enjoy the issue. Salut!

Diving head first into the ethical debate surrounding cloning, this thrilling play follows Salter, a man who was married and had one son before his wife threw herself under a train. Having turned to booze post-tragedy, he neglected his son who was then taken away from him. In an attempt to

hose familiar with the film version of High Society will be aware that the theatre adaptation has a tough act to follow. Frank Sinatra at the height of his powers, the ever-charming honey-voiced Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong’s dynamism and expert horn playing and, of course, the unparallelled Grace Kelly, floating through every scene lending it a glow and unexpected humour. Yup. A tough act to follow. Yet, after a slow start, the Old Vic’s summer musical manages to live up to it’s intimidating predecessor. Based on Philip Barry’s The Philadelphia Story, the musical tells the story of Tracy Samantha Lord, a young heiress about to be married for the second time. Her family has gathered at their mansion for one last party before the upcoming nuptials and, to Tracy’s chagrin, her ex-husband (and next door neighbour) CK Dexter Haven has turned up to stir up trouble and inform Tracy that two reporters from a gossip rag called Spy will be covering her wedding in return for suppressing a story about her father. Mike Connor and Liz Imbrie (the aforementioned reporters), unaware of the circumstances surrounding their assignment, think they are going

incognito as guests and are astonished by the eccentricities of their hosts. Joe Stilgoe takes over the vacuum left by Louis Armstrong as singer and musician, who at the beginning does a wonderful job of warming up the crowd with an improvised medley of suggestions from the audience. On the night I attended this included Ode to Joy, Bare Necessities, As Time Goes By and, somewhat surprisingly, Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. The play, set in the round, is a bit slow getting started but once it hits its stride it draws the audience into the champagne soaked and indulgently superficial world of these Newport socialites. Stand out performances include Mike Connor (played by Jamie Parker) belting out You’re Sensational and Tracy’s younger sister Dinah’s (played by Ellie Bamber) childish irreverance and joie de vivre. An astonishing piano duet after the interval and some tap-dancing atop said pianos cements this as a sterling production comparable to its cinematic counterpart. Well, did you ever? GAME CHANGER Game of Thrones star Kit Harington gives us the scoop on swapping the sword for a gun Wo r d s F E R G U S E W B A N k
G
Bridging the gap between swordsman and spy is a supporting role in James Kent’s Testament of Youth, a movie based on the memoirs of legendary pacifist Vera Britain. In the film, Harington plays her first love, Roland Leighton, a poet and scholar who dies at just 20 years old on the battlefields. Young and naïve with short-cropped hair, his character is almost unrecognisable from real-life Harington who, for now, must wear his Jon Snow mane out of strict contractual obligation. While his hair remains long, his lips must stay sealed. Bound to secrecy by the producers, discussing Game of Thrones in any detail is dangerous territory. “It’s a hell of a thing to talk about when you’re trying to excite people about it but not give anything away,” he says, rubbing his temples wearily as he labours over what must be an oft-repeated disclaimer. “We’ve been sat down by HBO and warned what we can and cannot say, which really leaves a very small window. It’s literally terrifying!” Remaining tight-lipped is a price worth paying for what the role has brought him. It’s undeniable that, despite his significant acting chops, the other role Harington has taken on is that of heartthrob.
ame of Thrones is unavoidable. Whether you’re a fan who’s (SPOILER ALERT) still in mourning over Ygritte’s untimely demise or someone who will kill the next person to utter the phrase ‘You know nothing, Jon Snow’, there’s no denying it’s a phenomenon. Like Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black, Game of Thrones has joined a legion of shows with an incredibly vocal and dedicated fanbase that has launched their stars to stratospheric fame. Kit Harington is one such star, whose life has been changed dramatically by George R. R. Martin’s fantasy behemoth and to the softly spoken, Worcester-bred actor, the whole thing has come as a bit of a shock. Roles have flooded in since his small screen debut in 2011, with a small part in the yet to be released Seventh Son, opposite Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore and the lead in the epic Pompeii, which covered some familiar ground for Harington who looks at home with a sword in his hand. Keen to shed this image, however, the young actor’s most recent film role is set in World War I and there isn’t a sword in sight.

XXXXXX ARTS & CULTURE / XXXXXXX / INTERVIEW For many viewers, Jon Snow’s husky voice, soulful eyes and brooding demeanour have made him a fan favourite. This popularity was cemented last season with Snow’s adventures beyond the Wall (the dividing line between the uncivilised Wildling territory and the rest of the North of Westeros) which lead him to Ygritte, the smouldering Night Watchmen’s first love. If Harington stripping off in a cave wasn’t enough to ensure HARINGTON STRIKES A POSE IN POMPEII legendary status, the tragic moment when Ygritte was killed leaving Jon Snow heartbroken did the job. The fact that he and Rose Leslie, the actress who portrayed Ygritte, are a real life on-again, off-again couple just adds to the intrigue. Now in the middle of producing the fifth season, Game of Thrones draws millions of devoted fans around the world. As its popularity has snowballed, Harington has been able to pay off student debts and important to step out and do something purchase his North London flat – also that was more character-driven.” known as ‘The Flat That Thrones Built’. As a fantasy film, the actor’s place in Seventh Son poses the risk of a certain typecastcasting the actor is eager to avoid: the sword that has sat so comfortably in his hand throughout Game of Thrones has become a doubleedged one for the actor. “People see you in these parts and they say ‘he’s doing well in this, he’d therefore be good in my period piece’,” he admits. “As good as some of these movies were, I didn’t want to be that person. “The industry still sees me now as something I’d never have predicted – as an action hero, in the Jon Snow mould. So, I have to find other things for my own HARINGTON AS JON SNOW, HIS BREAKOUT ROLE IN GAME OF THRONES sanity, to break out of it. For me it was

Roland and Vera as well as her brother, Edward. That gave me a huge insight into who these people were. “I've been to the war graves in Northern France twice and you only have to walk around to see the majority who died were 20 or 21. I even came across a grave of a 15-year-old. That never escaped me, their youth. It is poignant, how innocent these young men were.” Testament of Youth does a fine job of highlighting the sense of misplacement that existed during the war in a country so driven by notions of the greater good and the need for national heroism. Swept up in the romanticism of being a hero, Harington’s character becomes committed to a cause that, ultimately, he begins to disbelieve. This may sound like familiar territory to those who have been following Jon Snow’s journey this season and yet, the two performances remain entirely separate from one another. At no point do you expect a White Walker to appear on the fields of the Somme. Though, for some audiences, the sword may look more natural than the gun, Harington’s role in Testament of Youth, as well as the more contemporary Spooks, points to an actor more than capable of leaving Westeros behind. Its the rest of the world that may have a little more trouble letting go...u

JETS’ latest range Ω the Preview ’15 collection Ω boasts a premium line of swimwear and resortwear (from £64) made from nylon microfibre Lycra® which is then crafted using precision-cut tailoring. The lined mesh panel range, Parallel, comes in flattering hues of saturated tomato and cobalt. Allen also taps into the sports luxe trend and offers crop top cut bikinis, proving that shortsleeved one-pieces and sun shirts can be sexy. enswear is a slow moving animal. Unlike womenswear, where a trend will be shown on the runway and instantly adopted into the style vernacular, we men take a good six seasons to buy into the fashions shown on the runways of London, Paris, Milan and beyond. Take sandals, for instance; they’ve been shown by everyone from Giorgio Armani to Lanvin for the past four seasons and only just are they being translated onto the high street. And even now Ω two years down the line Ω we’re still not quite convinced. Sometimes a brand, trend or garment comes along which we can buy into immediately. For a long time British designer Jonathan ‘JW’ Anderson was
best known for his overtly feminine menswear (think thighconstricting crepe bell bottoms and floaty silk pussybow blouses), but his work as creative director of Spanish leather goods brand Loewe has taken that off-kilter aesthetic to accessible, covetable new heights. Unsurprisingly, the range of leather goods Anderson has produced for the label is where the new direction’s strength truly lies. From remarkably tactile calfskin luggage in elegant shades of mustard, caramel and midnight blue, to chunky suede espadrilles which perfectly capture the Spanish essence of the brand, everything feels modern, luxurious and masculine (the ready-to-wear included, remarkably). all products available from loewe.com

am one of those people who always wears make-up out of the house. So when I read about the Braun Face Beauty edition’s promise of radiant, make-up free skin, I had to give it a whirl. I gave myself a week to see results (I’m impatient, what can I say). I have combination skin, dry on the cheeks and around the eyes and oily on my forehead and nose. Day one, nothing much to report. I used the cleansing brush in the shower with my Liz Earle cleanser for one minute, moving the brush in circles. My face felt very clean but I wasn’t ready to give up my foundation yet. Day two and three saw a marked improvement on the dry skin on my cheeks. On day four I noticed my skin wasn’tas oily as usual and was definitely softer. By day six my friends were commenting on how clear my skin looked. Day seven: I went make-up free and felt good about it. The verdict? I still use concealer to cover up the odd blemish and the perennial bags under my eyes but the overall health of my skin was much better with fewer dry patches and an overall glow that hadn’t been there before. I would recommend the Braun Face Beauty edition unreservedly. ◆

TREAT YOURSELF The O2 Centre, Finchley Road, welcomed London lifestyle and beauty Blogger Daisy Kent, for a day of top-to-toe treats

t’s not often you get the time to escape and forget about the hustle and bustle of the city, but it’s certainly possible with a visit to Hampstead’s O2 Centre. With an onsite Virgin Active Health Club, complete with a tranquillity spa, trendy hair salons, a Vue Cinema and some delicious eateries, it’s the go-to for a girly day out. We invited Daisy, also known as I am Daisy-Alice, along with her friend, Hope Walters, for a Saturday full of pampering.
Next, they sampled the Good-toGo treatment package*, consisting of a skin radiance facial and a back, neck and shoulder massage. Therapists used luxury ESPA products while the girls relaxed for a full-hour in the same treatment room.

Centre’s grab-and-go eateries. Run by husband and wife team, Kajal and Mitan Sachder, the restaurant is located on the second floor of the centre. The popular eatery, which opened in January 2014, has received glowing reviews. Owner Mitan, created Falafel City after tasting his wife’s celebrated recipe. Knowing he couldn’t keep the tasty little delights to himself, he decided to share the recipe along with sauces inspired from around the world, with customers

Both Daisy and Hope received a Pureology hair conditioning treatment along with a signature blow dry from Seraphina, ensuring they were hair-ready and glammed-up for the weekend. To complete their day, they were invited along to Pizza Express (inside the O2 Centre) to enjoy a glass of Prosecco and some nibbles. The restaurant opened its doors in March this year. Daisy spoke about her day, saying: “It was really lovely to be invited down to the O2 Centre to enjoy a pamper day with Hope. We were truly spoilt with so much at the O2 Centre, including the health club spa and restaurants. “We loved the day, especially the facial and hair treatments. Both the lunch at Falafel City, and the nibbles and bubbles at Pizza Express, were so delicious.

They’re fresh, with no preservatives or additives, and include flavours from Rio, Paris, Bangkok, Delhi and Lisbon. Daisy and Hope, who are both vegetarians, enjoyed a delicious lunch at Falafel City before heading over to GRO London, situated outside of the centre, to the right of BoConcept. On arrival at GRO, one of the capital’s most exciting independent salon brands, the girls were met by team leader and senior stylist Seraphina, who explained what their treatments would involve. CAFÉ CULTS
Our pick of the City’s best cafés, whether you’re just stopping in, looking for lunch or having a breakfast meeting BEANY GREEN B R O A D G AT E C I R C L E
Your Lunchtime Saviour line out the door is always a good sign. And this is exactly what you can expect when visiting the cheekiest member of Broadgate Circle, Beany Green. Having only opened in mid April, the new arm of Prue Freeman and Tom Onions’ growing antipodean cafe empire makes number five in the Daisy Green family. What an unmissable addition it is. While this may initially be because of Louise Dear’s neon orange wall mural, the terrace cafe brings that Aussie soleil straight to EC1, chiefly due to its staff members, who are as vibrant as the acid bright decor. Health conscious, but not health obsessive, it’s all about moderation: with superfood salads, Vegan Balls, and chicken and avocado wraps occupying as much square footage in the cabinets as the ‘naughtier’ items, including its signature banana bread, white chocolate-coated apricot and almond balls, and saucer-sized chocolate chip cookies. Though it’s renowned for its coffee and brunch, Beany Green Broadgate makes A
an equally compelling case for its midday menu. Sucker punch your lunch with the Detox Box, a killer combination of three salads (changed daily) plus either said Vegan Ball, a Chicken & Feta Ball, or a chicken skewer – today’s lathered in sweet chilli sauce. Also in its salad repertoire is devastatingly good mixes of: roast potato wedges with curried tofu mayonnaise, dark leaves, nigella seeds and chives; chopped tomato, mozzarella and cucumber with pomegranate; roasted aubergine salad with pickled fennel, yellow pepper and dukkah. But even after your work day half-time refuel, there’s plenty more to love about Beany Green Broadgate: the Thursday and Friday night DJ sets post clock off serve as convenient warm-ups to the weekend. In short? We’re well keen for Beany Green. u Stephanie King

J&A CAFE SUT TON LANE
Corporates’ Breakfast Companion amily run eateries are always a bit of a risk, primarily because they often reflect the involved family members’ relationship. Evidently the sisters putting the ‘J’ and ‘A’ in J+A Cafe, Joanna and Aoife Ledwidge, have a wonderful bond, because their Clerkenwell cafe-cumrestaurant-cum-bar is delightfully warm, nourishing, and not the slightest bit pretentious. A regular haunt of late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, J+A Cafe has been charming its patrons since 2008. Its location down a non-descript laneway makes it literally, a hidden gem, which is rather fitting as the cafe is set inside what once was a diamond cutting factory. The bulb lights and bunting strung overhead guide you to the cafe and restaurant/bar (on opposite sides of the alleyway), where inside you’ll find exposed brick walls, eclectic furniture and sleek pendant lamps creating a cool, Brooklyn loft atmosphere – the ideal setting F

Don’t worry; the friendly staff are skilled in decoding your pre-J. Atkinson & Co latte slurs. Perhaps you’ll be too distracted by the freshly baked treats adorning the counter – including Joanna and Aoife’s almost infamously good soda bread and Chocolate Guinness Cake – to try the indulgent Eggs Benedict or signature J+A Breakfast, which is comprised of sausage, bacon, tomato, mushroom, Clonekilty black pudding and a Fried Egg. But perhaps not. Whatever your selection, the common ingredient in each of J+A Cafe’s dishes is a sense of ‘homeliness.’ Much like a weekend family home visit, each trip here will have you leaving with a similar hug-from-Mum feeling. PRINTWORKS KITCHEN R O S E B E R Y AV E N U E
Quick and Easy inding a quiet place to sit down and eat when you’re pushed for time isn’t easy. Judging by the Prets and the Starbucks of this world, quick comes hand in hand with loud and over-crowded, which isn’t the way we like to spend our lunch breaks. Thankfully, Clerkenwell’s newest eatery, Printworks Kitchen, has come to our rescue with fast service and an atmosphere best described as breezy. Large, spacious and full of light, the former print house has been transformed into an oasis of inner-city serenity with crisp white walls, metallic tables, brightly coloured furnishings and interesting artwork. Run by two foodies, one a Leiths trained chef, the other an award-winning free-from baker, the food at Printworks is a mix of healthy, seasonal salads and naughty-tasting but guilt-free treats. Neither of which are particularly fancy: here, the simplistic is F

favoured over the complicated, which may account for the lack of taste in my salad box. Having chosen a combination of mixed beans, quinoa, asparagus, bacon and rocket with crutons and sweet potato frittas, I was expecting a clever mix of herbs and spices. Unfortunatealy, the whole thing was underseasoned so needed a generous dousing of sweet mustard dressing. Meanwhile, the sandwich menu was better with everything from hummus and roasted Mediterranean vegetables on ciabatta to pastrami, pickle and mustard on rye to order. My lunch date had the latter, and said that it was exactly what he needed mid-week – comfortingly big and salty. Drinks-wise, Printworks source their coffee from Horsham Roasters so my americano was perfectly rich and sweet with notes of chocolate and caramel while the well-stocked fridge included an array of freshly squeezed juices, my favourite, the zesty blood orange was smooth and refreshing. Finishing things up with one of the cafe’s famous gluten-free pistashio and lemon zest loaves, we left with our sweet tooth satiated and our stomachs happy. But please, do be warned, the kitchen is only open from Monday-Friday, 7.30am4.30pm, so caters specifically to time-poor local workers. Don’t expect to find anything here when you’re off duty and looking for a lazy weekend brunch. This is a strictly professional hideaway. u Elizabeth Hutton

The Richmond Atmosphere, achingly cool interiors and oysters are up in Hackney Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s
B
efore you even walk in through the door, you know The Richmond is going to be something a little special. The leafy, serene Queensbridge Road location has an undercurrent of barely-suppressed excitement that Hackney in the summer has in spades. Walking in under the large neon sign, the decor is predictably cool, effortless in its unfussy style. The Richmond is not trying to impress you – but it will. The place is packed on a Tuesday night and we’re not seated ten minutes before our first celebrity sighting. Hackney’s answer to the Pisco Sour, we order a round of Richmond Fizzes and begin our involved perusal of the menu. One of
The Richmond’s USPs is its fully stocked oyster bar whose offerings vary depending on availability and whose wonderfully reasonable prices make it well worth the visit already. Accompanied as I was by non-oyster lovers, I ordered solo, making the magnificent ice tray my three oysters arrived on look a little desolate. I had selected one Lindisfarne and two Maldon Kumamotos, which our waiter described as ‘beginner oysters’. The Maldons were delicious, small and a little sweeter than I expected but it was the meatier Lindisfarne that won me over, with its freshness and smooth texture. In keeping with the seafood theme, we ordered some small plates to start with: crab, english muffin and espelette pepper,
43 C&A_JULY15_Food_Review.indd 43
crispy prawns and lemon mayonnaise and queen scallops, preserved lemon and fino butter. The least to look at on the plate, the crab muffin was my absolute favourite of these, piquant notes piercing the creaminess of the butter and the soft, lightly toasted muffin. The crispy prawns were fried to perfection, meaning they could be consumed from top to tail and the lemon mayo added a touch of freshness. The queen scallops were enormous and swimming in butter with that essential flaky texture that makes them melt in the mouth. For our mains we chose the Nduja spiced seafood stew, pasta shells and aioli, the half Goosnargh duck, treviso, black pudding, hazelnuts and orange (which is intended for two) and the lamb loin, green beans, turnip and mint. The lamb was succulent and pink with a crispy layer of fat on top and laid on a bed of crunchy beans. My companion found the stew a little underwhelming as the octopus was a touch overcooked but overall found the clams and mussels hearty and satisfying with the rich tomato sauce adding a note of sweetness. It was the duck, however that won the table. Served on a platter rather than a plate, this dish for two offers tender duck breast, scrumptious wings and decadent black pudding all swimming in a dark, sticky-sweet sauce. There wasn’t a scrap left when we put down our forks. Puddings and aperitifs followed in a blur of delicious food (the banana tart was to die for), electric atmosphere (the staff are adorable) and fine wine (try the Julien Meyer Pinot Gris Alsace 2013). The Richmond is officially Hackney’s newest must-visit eatery. u

Colourways include rustic charcoal, ivory linen and a Gallic navy stripe – or you can opt for a fanciful Liberty of London trim. briarhandmade.com
seat is designed to take the stress out of travelling – particularly for those finding it difficult to get out of the house or adapting to having a second child. With the Doona, there’s no need to transfer your little one from car seat to buggy; the seat changes into a stroller in less than ten seconds and at the touch of a button. It’s not a complete travel system in the sense that you may need another buggy for all-day use (possibly one with all-terrain wheels, or a newborn-friendly carry cot), but if you’re buying a car-seat anyway, why not get one with its own set of integral wheels? The Doona comes with an orthopaedic, hypo-allergenic inner cushion for younger babies and other key benefits, including chassis suspension and a rocking function. ◆

Do I need to employ an agent or consultant? rivate education is increasingly becoming a P luxury and an investment. Ensuring that you are receiving value for money and a sufficient return is not only prudent but will alleviate any anxieties you may have about your child’s progress. With their in-depth knowledge of independent schools, educational consultants identify what academic structure and environment will best support your offspring and encourage them to thrive. Bonas MacFarlane leads the way on this and is unique in providing a mentoring programme following the placement. This closely monitors your child’s progress throughout their school career, maximising all opportunities and pushing the pupil to realise their potential. A note of warning: it is wise to be aware of rogue agents. Having sprung up from business ability rather than experience and an organic interest in the British education system, agents are frequently driven by fee-taking agreements made with schools. As such, when choosing a consultant reputation should be tantamount to ensure first class results.

arking about with horses at school might seem to be the sole preserve of smart girls at public school with hair as glossy as their pony’s manes, but horses are trotting into schools in surprising places. Equine therapy, or more specifically Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an established practice in the US that is gaining popularity here. EAL aims to enable children to achieve educational goals by interacting with horses, particularly pupils who find it hard to engage with mainstream schooling such as those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Its sister therapy, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) uses similar, often one-on-one techniques to help and heal many groups of people, such as traumatised children, sufferers of PTSD and recovering addicts. They are even using it for treatments at the Priory. Last November, as part of National Anti-Bullying Week, groups of London school pupils aged between 12-15 years old were able to work with shire horses in Hyde Park alongside EAL therapist Dr Andreas Liefooghe. “Humans can learn a lot from watching horses,” says Dr Andreas Liefooghe. The main aim of the programme was to teach teenagers co-operative group work and inclusion rather than competition and exclusion. The children learnt to interact with the animals through observing their responses and communicating non-verbally, learning valuable lessons about themselves and teamwork along the way. EAL is proving particularly valuable for children with issues such as ADHD, autism and attachment disorders. Children with SEN can learn about themselves and others, processing and discussing feelings and behaviour patterns they may struggle to articulate. Treatments can be gentle, introductory sensory techniques, such as grooming or petting a horse, or even decorating it with paint. The benefits of sensory work are profound, involving fine motor skills, verbal communication and social interaction.
49 Chiswick_JULY15_Education.indd 49
The reason EAL works so well, says Rosie Edwards, who runs the charity Learning Through Horses, is that “Horses are like mirrors – they reflect the emotions around them, whether excitement, anger, joy or sadness.” Edwards offers EAL courses for pupils in London schools; working with six pupils at a time, she teaches them the basics of horsewhispering – training horses using body language. This requires “fine-tuned” control and observation techniques, says Edwards. Most importantly, “in order to train horses, students must get control of their own emotions”. Edwards sees the difference EAL makes right in front of her eyes. “Most pupils are referred to us because of challenging behaviour but we see very little of it here,” she says. “Plus the threat of getting kicked in the head is a little more real,” she laughs. Edwards also notes that pupils renowned for non-attendance never miss a day at her stables. This motivation can itself reap rewards. Last September, Edwards ran a programme aimed at getting young people back into employment. She now receives regular requests for job references from those pupils who have made successful job applications. “That gives me massive gratification,” she says. ROME
SPOTLIGHT ON
Real Roman food and culture hy is it that when in Rome we immediately head to the Trevi and the Colosseum? That’s not what the Romans do. This city is not only steeped in ancient history but culinary culture too. Make a point of seeing both sides and it’s impossible to leave disappointed. W

S E E . For art, the Galleria Borghese is a brilliant alternative to the crowded Vatican Museum. Limiting the number of visitors allowed inside, you are given just two hours to explore. Stay on the move and you’ll see works by Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini. If architectural spectacle is what you’re after, venture 45 minutes out of Rome to the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli. Built during the 2nd century, this archaeological site was once a hub of power and includes the remains of the famous Maritime Theatre.
This CITY is not only steeped in
ANCIENT HISTORY but CULINARY CULTURE too S TAY. Just 15 minutes from the city, the Rome Cavalieri is the perfect base for exploration. Offering the tranquility of a resort, hotel highlights include the La Prairie Grand Spa, outdoor pools and a record-breaking multi-million pound art collection. While the entire hotel is on the swanky side, you can’t beat the luxury found in the hotel’s 25 suites. In the penthouse you’ll find original Warhol prints, a rare marble and malachite hydro-massage bathroom with Swarovski crystal fixtures, and a private roof terrace where the twinkling panoramic view includes the Vatican. Relentlessly passionate about food, the Cavalieri is also home to the only 3 Michelin starred restaurant in Rome, La Pergola. Run by Heinz Beck, the food here is something else. His famous fagottelli is an unconventional pasta dish that sees creamy carbonara sauce encased within the parcels rather than poured on top. G O . Every restaurant in Rome claims to serve the best Italian food so do your research before heading out. We found real Roman fare at the authentic neighbourhood trattoria, Osteria dell’Angelo. Full of Italians drinking local wine and eating homemade pasta it’s worth booking a table in advance. For Roman cuisine without the foreplaning, we recommend a food safari with Eating Italy (eatingitalyfoodtours. com). Taking you through the foodie neighbourhood of Testaccio, this guided tour lets you escape the crowds and experience the city like a local – on foot. One thing you must try en route is the suppì from Trapizzino: these deep fried balls of saucy risotto contain an oozing chunk of mozzarella. Devilishly good. u Elizabeth Hutton

TRAVEL / ROUND-UP VIENNA SPOTLIGHT ON
Retail therapy and decadent balls ienna can now add shopping destination to its already impressive offering of baroque and gothic architecture, outrageous charity balls and famous hotels, making it the ideal city break this summer. V
S E E . Vienna is a historically and culturally rich city and, with the exception of the Belvedere Gallery (permanent home to the works of Gustav Klimt) and the Central Cemetery (even more permanent home to Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert), most of this history can be found in the First District. Enlist a tour guide to take you on a walking tour and you will notice the wide streets, completely devoid of litter and the air, free from smog, courtesy of a healthy breeze blowing off the Danube. They will undoubtedly lead you past the impressive, crescent-shaped Hofburg Imperial Palace, former home of the Habsburgs and stop off at the famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an epic Gothic edifice with a stunning tiled roof that bears the double-headed eagle symbolic of the empire ruled from Vienna. If walking seems like too much effort, hail a fiaker (the Viennese horse and carts that throng the First District) for a leisurely excursion around the city centre. If shopping is the main priority, the newly built Golden Quarter, located off Am Hof Square is a must-visit. Signa Group’s latest project manages to pay tribute to the UNESCO World Heritage Site it inhabits with tasteful and uniform signage and top-end brands, from Valentino to Vivienne Westwood, not to mention remarkable luxury apartments and office spaces with breathtaking views.
S TAY. The Park Hyatt Vienna is hard to beat in the hotel stakes. Located in the picturesque Am Hof Square, the Park Hyatt opened in June 2014 and has quickly established itself as one of the city’s places to be seen. What with 143 luxurious rooms (including 35 suites), the fully kitted out Arany Spa housing the largest indoor swimming pool in Vienna and The Bank, the hotel’s exceptional restaurant, even walking out of the front door is a wrench. The decor is in tune with the historic roots of the building, formerly a bank, with seams of mother of pearl running through it and luxurious natural materials such as onyx from Iran and marble from Italy dominating the rooms and common areas. Those looking to enjoy a drink of an evening can keep it traditional in the hotel’s Lounge where cigar smoking and whisky drinking is par for the course or head down to Pearl, the more contemporary bar that spills out onto the street. G O . Vienna is known for the lavish balls that make up its social season and although the Life Ball does not fit into the traditional category (you won’t need to learn to waltz) it has become a fixture in the city since the first event was organised by Gary Kessler with the help of some famous friends in 1993. It is now the largest charity ball in Europe and raises hundreds of thousands of

If shopping is A PRIORITY the newly built GOLDEN QUARTER is a mustvisit pounds to fight HIV and AIDS every year. The theme for 2015 was ‘Gold’ and in standard flamboyant fashion, the red carpet was awash with gold-bedecked revellers, some wearing little more than body paint and others kitted out in golden bondage gear and chains. The Opening Ceremony featured fire and tributes being brought up to the stage, which were received by dancers dressed as Klimt paintings. Bizarre and wonderful celebrity appearances included Charlize Theron, Sean Penn and Dita von Teese with musical performances from Mary J Blige, Sophie Ellis Bextor and, of course, Conchita Wurst. A wonderful, surreal, outlandish and fabulous event, the Life Ball shows Vienna at its best.u Catherine Hales

Street art in Athens on’t always believe what you read in the papers. Greece might be in the depth of a financial crisis, but the atmosphere in the capital is a million miles away from austerity. D
S E E . The street art. While it’s possible to wander the streets and stumble across it, a tour is the best way to spot the urban masterpieces. Alternative Athens will organize a street artist to give you an inside look at the very best the streets have to offer. Our guide, Achilles, points out his own enigmatic painted faces as we walk around Psiri, the vibrant, graffitiladen equivalent of London’s Shoreditch. Each of the paintings tells a story: a series of ‘sad princesses’ tells of an artist trying to win back his lover, a crowned dog against a backdrop of flames is the hero of the 2008 riots. Together, they help
Street art helps PAINT A PICTURE of modern-day Athens as the colourful CITY IT HAS BECOME
paint a picture of modern-day Athens as the colourful, creative city it has become. But alongside the contemporary, there’s the classical for which Athens is famous. No visit Greece’s capital would be complete without seeing the ancient Acropolis, one of the seven wonders of the world. Book a guide through Discover Greece as it’s easy to feel like you’re just looking at a pile of rubble without a bit of context. Even if you’re not interested in ancient ruins, the view from the top of the hill is worth the climb. From here you can look down through the Cyprus trees to the new Acropolis Museum.
the luxurious loft suites, each a haven of marble and elegant artworks complete with a king-sized bed, outdoor terrace and views across the city. Meanwhile, the ridiculously popular graffiti rooms are decorated by the cream of Greece’s street art talent, including acclaimed artist B. Expect everything from flaming volcanoes and giant squids to enchanted forests and comic book heroes on the walls. Great for the kids, they’re also available as family rooms. G O . S TAY. Who said street art has to end on the streets? Stay at the Grecotel Pallas Athena and you can sleep surrounded by it. Located in the heart of downtown Athens, the design-led boutique hotel is like staying in your own private art gallery – each of the 63 rooms is adorned with original pieces and quirky graffiti art. streets, up stairs or behind closed doors making them so tricky to find that many Athenians don’t even know about them. One great example of this is Six Dogs on Avramiotou St. Hidden down a back alley, Six Dogs is an arty concept venue where you can find live music, exhibitions and an enchanted courtyard. A similar idea but with more historic charm is The Art Foundation, aka Taf on Normanou St. Behind the wrought iron doors and through a dark, stone-clad corridor is a former communal house dating back to 1871 that once homed 12 families. Around the courtyard bar, the rickety wooden rooms are filled with art being exhibited – perfect for perusing with a drink in hand. Meanwhile, at the back of a small shopping arcade next door is Couleur Locale, a relaxed roof terrace bar where you can watch the sun set over the Acropolis at the end of the day and raise a toast to a city transformed. u

t is now a prerequisite that anyone applying for a mortgage needs to provide varied and detailed documentation. If you are unaware of these requirements, you may find out that you have been offered less money than you need or, even worse, rejected completely. This can lead to huge disappointment. property you should make an appointment to see a professional mortgage adviser, who can prepare you with what you may need to do in order to be agreed for a mortgage and avoid delays. A tip would be to start gathering the information required as soon as possible. This includes payslips, bank statements, and P60s. Your reward should be peace of mind and a head start to put you in the best buying position.

ettings – it’s often more about people than property and a wealthy, retired couple recently presented us with quite a challenge. They had sold their elegant home and asked us to find them somewhere to rent. Our couple had a long ‘wish list’, from a southfacing garden to space for separate quarters - so fully understanding their requirements was key. he remaining lease term will now need to be extended to comply with your lender’s requirements of a minimum lease term. As you are a joint freeholder, it is unfortunate that agreement cannot be reached so that your lease term is extended amicably. Your co-freeholder must appreciate that in order to extend his own lease he will also require your co-operation. If you feel that you cannot come to an agreement with your co-freeholder, then you are able to exercise your statutory rights under the Leasehold Reform Housing Urban Development Act 1993. You will in effect be serving a Notice of Claim for a lease extension on your co-freeholder. Under the Act, you have a right to extend the term of your lease for a period of 90 years from the expiry of the existing lease term subject to the following requirements: the current lease was granted for a fixed term exceeding 21 years and you have owned your flat for two years. It is often the case the joint freeholders agree that a premium will not be payable to extend a lease, as this will mean that you will be paying half the premium to yourself. As your relationship with your co-freeholder is not amicable, you will need to obtain a valuation as the Act requires that your Notice of Claim for a lease extension offers a premium. It may very well be the case that upon receipt of the formal Notice, your co-freeholder will agree not to charge a premium as he will at some point also wish to acquire a lease term extension and will be in the same position as you are now. Once the Notice is served, your co-freeholder will have no choice but to cooperate, as the Act sets out strict timescales which must be complied with.

joined the Camden branch of Portico back in 2013. Well, to be accurate, it was still an Edmund Cude office back then. Quite a lot has happened in the market and within this company since I have been here. There have been market highs and the uncertainty of the election, which is now fading into the past as things get back to normal. And of course there has been the changing face of this company. The rebrand from Edmund Cude to Portico was a long researched and planned evolution of the company; I’m really happy to be in a company that looks forward, changes with the times, and doesn’t rest on its laurels. I’ve been an agent for eight years now and I’m so glad to have settled my career in Camden, the most vibrant corner of North London. I enjoy the diversity of the area’s culture, my clients, who come from all walks of life, and most of all that it is just a fun
IT’S ALL DESIGNED TO TAKE THE HASSLE OUT OF BEING A LANDLORD
atmosphere to work in. When I’m not working I can be found shopping in the markets, enjoying the scenery along the canal and in Regent’s Park, admiring the views from Primrose Hill, and of course there is the world famous nightlife. If anyone needs a little advice on the local live music scene or a good night out then just drop in for a chat. During my youth growing up in the countryside near London, I always imagined moving into the city and making a life here. I’ve now achieved a lot of my goals and feel I’ve landed on my feet as the lettings manager for this branch. I love architecture and property, and Camden has it all, from cool studio flats to interior
designed six bed plus houses, and everything in between. The people are often more interesting than the properties as well; I get to know lots of different landlords, which is the real pleasure of the job. Estate agency is a fantastic line of work to be in. It is incredibly rewarding finding tenants for landlords and in turn finding tenants their perfect homes. I’m lucky to have a great team of colleagues here at Portico. Along with the rebrand comes a set of exciting new packages in line with what our customers told us they wanted. It’s all designed to take the hassle out of being a landlord by providing a uniquely personal service. Since we have re-launched the company we have noticed even more interest in the brand and the new name has been very well received. We are all very happy with the new name and it’s great that our clients like it too. u

ost of us have that Mediterranean property moment at some point in our lives, even if we don’t act on it. You may have already experienced it while on holiday; an evening meal on a balmy night, with the twitter of cicadas in the background and the heady effects of some local wine. This is when the conversation probably turned to ‘let’s get a holiday home here’. At the moment these restaurant chats are multiplying as the UK economy revives, with holiday home prices rising too. So, what can you buy in the Med’s principal hotspots? u

MODERNIST VILLA IN THE HILLS ABOVE CANNES, £6M
ou will know this area of Cannes if you’ve read JG Ballard’s 2000 novel Super Cannes, named after the set of sought-after communities in the hills overlooking this most English of cities, and the glittering sea beyond. The area is a favourite of the film stars who come each year to the film festival, mainly because of the area’s unimpeded views of the coast. This newly built example is a five-bedroom property and includes every gorgeous cliché that a villa should have, such as an open-plan design, huge terrace and garden, and an infinity pool. u Savills Cannes, +33 497 06 06 90; savills.com Y

APARTMENT AND HOUSES AT TERRE GIALLE RESIDENCE & RESORT, TUSCANY, FROM £66,400
taly’s Tuscan countryside has long been a magnet for UK tourists and house hunters, both drawn to its mouthwatering food, rolling countryside, olive groves and vineyards. While houses have been selling for sky-high prices for years, developments have sprung up to satisfy those with more modest budgets. These are often refurbished estates or palazzos. A recent example is Residence Terre Gialle, deep in the countryside half way between the city of Perugia and the coast, both of which are a two-hour car journey away. The site has a history rooted in the now defunct local mining industry and is a development of studios, one and two bedroom apartments and three-bedroom townhouses, which are available at full price or fractionally. u Terre Gialle, 020 3637 2215; terregialle.com I
