W
e’ve become a nation of food obsessives and ‘world food’ has become synonymous with the zeitgeist. A trip to Haggerston’s Friday night Street Feast is case in point: full-on festival vibes where the headliners are smoked ribs and a pint of mojito instead of bands. Queues stretch round the block.
Why do we love street food, pop-ups, foodie fests and, moreover, a gastronomic spend-up, splashing astronomical amounts on breakfast, lunch and dinner? Perhaps the answer has something do with the way pop-ups and food events combine eating, socialising and our fixation on the new. The new generation of foodie enterprises are all about concept - and can therefore be blogged and tweeted about furiously. As talk of the triple-dip plods on, it seems our attentions are turned to other kinds of dip instead - say, carrot and carraway or a minty tzatziki. No doubt our hunger for travel runs parallel to our newfound love of exotic foods. We’re now much more on a par with New York, and it’s finally possible to get good tacos, street food and ceviche in pretty much every part of London. There’s also the fact that food now carries the currency of cool – the whole ‘Have you tried the mock duck dumplings at HKK? They are insane,’ type thing. And naturally, a decent meal has comes with an equally decent, mixologist-sanctioned cocktail. We’ve come to expect more and better: as such, feel free to pore over our food and drink feature on the latest street-food stalls. This is a foodie issue, but elsewhere Tony Ferenz interviews man of the moment, Benedict Cumberbatch, who at time of writing is about to hit cinema screens playing a villain in the new Star Trek movie. Meanwhile, local resident and literary icon Al Alvarez talks to Edward Lyon about his beautiful new book, Pondlife, a journal of his years swimming in Hampstead ponds. Bon Appetit!

SPACE RACE Benedict Cumberbatch is upgrading. For starters, he’s swapped 221B Baker Street for the Starship Enterprise. But it doesn’t end there for the Hampstead-based actor, as Tony Ferenz finds out
B
enedict Cumberbatch is aware of his strengths and it appears Hollywood has quickly cottoned on to his strongest suit. ‘I have the long face, the gentrified tones – I’m a blueprint for the quintessential British bad guy,’ he quietly laughs, expressing a little sardonic humour. Swiftly becoming one of LA’s hottest names, Cumberbatch is indeed crafting a fine niche as the dastardly villain. Now while previous projects had showcased his natural and powerful versatility as an actor – namely his work in War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a mesmerising performance as renowned physicist Stephen Hawking in a sweeping BBC biopic, and, of course, a starmaking turn as Sherlock, it’s his forthcoming work that’s attracting the ‘bad guy’ label. Soon to appear as the main antagonist in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek: Into Darkness, and set to
play Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, in the highly controversial The Fifth Estate, does he find himself attracted to bad guy roles? ‘Yes and no,’ he says. ‘I am very aware of cookie cutter, two-dimensional villains and the English transition of an actor being from a different culture coming over, and they are being like, “God, this guy does theatre and stuff. We’d better give him the bad guy role and a cape and just make him really horrible”.’ ‘With Star Trek, it was really the script; it was the pitch that JJ gave me a couple of scenes to audition with, and he fleshed out the whole world of the rest of the script. There’s a purpose and intention to his otherwise violent and pretty distressing actions that made it really intriguing. And I thought, “Well okay, there’s a purpose to this man; he’s not just the antagonist”.’ Currently living in Hampstead, Benedict grew up in a performer’s household as the
son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham. Understandably, both were concerned when their only child decided to follow in their footsteps. ‘They just saw the pitfalls of it every day, and you don’t know where your next job is coming from and it’s unstable, into which they were having a child, me. You don’t want that; you want stability for your children. You want something better and everything that was bad about it for them, they wanted me to be free of for me, but I just kept on doing it, kept on doing it, at school and University. ‘And eventually my dad said, ‘“you are better than I was or ever will be; you will have a really good time doing this for a living.” And I cried at that moment. I thought, ‘Okay, if I’ve got his blessing, then I’m going to do it.’ Single following a 12-year relationship with actress Olivia Poulet, Cumberbatch, who has already experienced a certain level 9

of ‘fandemonium’ off the back of Sherlock, is surely poised for the stratosphere after the release of Star Trek: Into Darkness. Is he prepared? ‘Prepared for what really?’ He asks nonchalantly. ‘I mean, look, yes Star Trek is a huge deal and if people want to come up to me, so be it. But I’m not expecting Beatledom, so there’s no point anticipating ‘it,’ as it were.’ Was a young Benedict even a fan of the old Star Trek series? ‘Not a huge deal,’ he admits, candidly. ‘I watched it and I knew of it, and I’ve seen pretty much every generation of it, but I have never been an obsessed fan; I’ve never had that longing to be in the club... any sort of club – not even a football club. But I guess it’s something to do with being an only child. I was very gregarious, but I don’t think I ever obsessed with anything, I just sort of bought the t-shirt.’ The inevitable quandary over a move to Los Angeles is surely something that is on the mind
for the charismatic actor. Shall London be losing one of its brightest luminaries? ‘Absolutely not,’ he states. ‘People have floated this idea of moving but I have no desire to do anything of the sort. To be honest, that whole notion of moving Stateside when you ‘make it’ is dead and buried. It’s 2013, we have sophisticated methods of travel nowadays.’ That will undoubtedly come as a relief to fans of Sherlock, who witnessed the great detective die in the final season, only to be resurrected for the forthcoming series. How long will Benedict remain with the BBC smash hit, does he think? ‘For as long as it makes sense, I guess. But without wishing to sound brazen, I think it will die with me, to be honest – you couldn’t have someone else taking over. It’s not like Doctor Who; Sherlock doesn’t regenerate.’ Thankfully, Benedict Cumberbatch does.

POETRY IN MOTION I
Edward Lyon meets Al Alvarez, one of the 20th century’s most enduring literary icons
t’s a particularly British day for weather. The morning starts with proper spring sunshine, some of the first we’ve seen this year, and as the air warms, life begins to divert towards London’s green spaces. Then comes the deluge. In a few short moments, the sun vanishes beneath a blanket of cloud. Down comes the rain, then the hail. Thunder cracks, and people cower – but not for long. Ten minutes later, the sky is blue, the sun bright and the storm so completely disappeared it might have been a figment, the bad dream of someone sleeping in the grass. I’m one of those soaked in the downpour, but it’s hard to mind; indeed, it seems fitting to experience such extremes while on my way to meet Al Alvarez. One of the last century’s most fascinating literary personalities, Alvarez was Poetry Editor of the Observer for nearly twenty years. Then and afterwards, he championed emerging writers including Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes (most notably in his era-defining 1962 anthology The New Poetry), wrote several acclaimed novels and non-fiction works (including The Savage God, a study of suicide, and Feeding the Rat, on mountaineering) and published a much-lauded volume of his own poems. His latest book, Pondlife, is a journal covering several years of almost-daily trips to swim in Highgate Ponds – and the book is filled to the brim with weather. Alvarez has been a Hampstead resident since his youth, and has lived in the same elegant townhouse since the 1960s. I step inside and find myself in a bohemian den filled with books and pictures. I’m greeted by Al’s wife, Anne, a psychotherapist and leading authority on the treatment of child trauma, before being shown through to a cosy kitchen nook where Al sits at a table strewn with newspapers and magazines. A few years ago, Alvarez suffered a stroke. Undaunted, he recovered his strength and returned to swimming. More recently, another
stroke has kept him from the ponds, probably for good, but he nonetheless greets me in fine spirits, and is very soon telling me how his parents moved to Hampstead when he was a child, and how his long association with the swimming ponds on Hampstead Heath began soon afterwards. ‘As a child, I didn’t swim there as regularly as I did later on,’ he says, ‘because, you know, I was sent away to school at 12 or 13 and there were other things going on. But I have always swum there, yes.’ The affection Alvarez feels for the ponds and the heath is clear throughout Pondlife, as he uses the changing seasons and his
experience of the scenery as a launch for broader reflections on life, relationships and the hopes and fears of old age. His writing suggests a deep but unsentimental respect for the natural world, I suggest. ‘Yes, I suppose that’s one reason I’ve always lived in Hampstead. It’s a lovely area, so many trees. It’s not like I’ve always been obsessed by nature more than other things, but I have a good eye. I see what’s going on around me.’ Do you still visit the heath now, I ask. ‘Oh, yes!’ We go on to speak about Alvarez’s youth, as detailed in his 1999 memoir Where did it All Go Right? I ask if his reputation as a literary man of action is justified. Was he really the ‘Boy’s Own Adventure’ type?
‘When I was young, yes. I’m an old, old man now, of course, but I had a lot of fun when I was younger, put it that way.’ To be honest, there’s still something youthful about Alvarez today, at 83; a glitter in the eyes and a gusty, irrepressible laugh that make him enervating company for all his attempts at selfdeprecation. Clearly, age and the infirmities that come with it are a bugbear, but is he glad to have lived when and how he did? ‘Well, there aren’t as many chances to have fun these days,’ he says. I mention that my grandmother is set to turn 86 the next day, and that when she talks about her childhood – poverty-stricken as it was – it’s as a golden age of romance and discovery, when the world seemed far more wonderful than it does now. ‘What she and I both have in common,’ Alvarez says, ‘is the war. Everything got taken apart and resettled, as it were. You had to find stuff out, when we were younger. It very much feels like another era now.’ We’ve been talking for over half an hour and it’s probably time for me to leave; for the first time in a decade of interviews, I regret it. We squeeze in a few more minutes of conversation, skipping from poker (‘I played for high stakes; I lost for high stakes sometimes’) to contemporary poetry (‘I don’t follow it anymore’) to the US poet Frederick Seidel (‘Oh yes, he’s rather good’). We also touch once again on the allure of the area – Alvarez professes himself a fan of nearby bookseller, Daunt’s, and speaks warmly of the local literary heritage. Eventually, we come to what he is reading at the moment: ‘[John] Le Carré’s new book [A Delicate Truth]. He’s marvellous, it’s a very elaborate spy story.’ I can’t help myself. ‘Have you met him?’ I ask. ‘Oh, yes,’ Alvarez answers, ‘he lives just down the road.’ Pondlife is out now, published by Bloomsbury. 17

I’ve never been on holiday to Africa, though I have done a charity trek up Mount Kenya, DJ’d at a festival called Lake Of Stars in Malawi and last year visited Ethiopia with Oxfam. Each trip has undoubtedly been among the best of my life for different reasons. Africa has a solid place in my heart. It’s so big and I want to explore more of it.

Jesse Stevens, Creative Director of East London eyewear brand Finest Seven, tells Absolutely how to choose the perfect pair of sunnies Tell us about Finest Seven: how did the company start? Finest Seven started out of a desire to express myself personally in an eyewear collection. Designing for many different brands is fantastic but at some stage you discover designs that you love that are not necessarily right for any of your clients. The idea evolved from the concept of taking seven of the primary components that make up a pair of sunglasses and searching to find the most unique or finest examples of each. Where is the studio and why did you decide to settle in East London? Our Studio is on Fish Island – hence its name, Fish Island Design. I love East London, it’s our home. Having travelled around the world a lot, I can safely say that the East End is one of the most culturally diverse, interesting places I have visited. Tell us about the design process. The design process is difficult to standardise. There are various starting points, several ways to traverse the contents and only one final solution – the finished product. We surround ourselves with eyewear and bits of eyewear past and present. We also look at other designs, buildings, cars, fashion accessories. Design is, at best, a melting pot of life and experience distilled into a product. So tell us... how do you pick sunnies to suit your face shape? Sunnies and face shapes – there are rules and guidelines. However, there are also personal choices that go against all these rules and the wearer still looks great. Style outweighs rules. What trends are we seeing in sunglasses this year?
project – it just flowed. For full-on design work, I’ve always admired the quality of the Louis Vuitton collection and it would be amazing to do some design work for them. Who do you consult for? Currently I’m consulting for Roland Mouret, Claire Goldsmith and Alexander McQueen. Last season I did a collection for Zeiss lenses and previously I’ve worked for Victoria Beckham and Prada.
Heavy acetate sunglasses have been on-trend for some time. I think we can expect to see more of the same with a leaning towards metal and acetate combinations and full metal frames. Is there a theme for this summer’s collection? Most of our styles are the result of a collaboration with someone we love to work with or are based on finding unique vintage components we think are marvellous. For SS13, we worked alongside our plastics manufacturer to develop acetate frames in a palette of colour pop and neon tones that are entirely exclusive to Finest Seven. Tell us about your recent collaborations... do you have any more planned? Collaborations are usually a very organic process. We wait to meet someone we like or get approached by someone that likes us. We recently worked with Felder Felder; they’re a great team and we both saw a similar solution when we first discussed the
What do you love about running your own business? When the going gets tough, how do you stay motivated and inspired? Running my own business is fullon. It is a huge challenge to me to build a robust business and to keep things interesting and growing well. When the going gets tough, the tough get going! I work harder and treat it as another creative hurdle to be overcome. My wife helps and supports me tremendously; I’m not sure I could manage without her strength. Who would you most like to style? It would be great to do bespoke work for Elton John, for example – he really loves eyewear and it makes up a part of his public persona. Finally... name your iconic eyewear celeb of all time. Hmm, my eyewear celeb of all time... We have done a lot of work around Audrey Hepburn lately, she wore some amazing sunnies. I love the way Run DMC wore their Cazal frames back in the eighties, and optically I think it’s difficult to beat the Two Ronnies – I loved their show when I was a kid. finestseven.com 19

The right direction Absolutely talks to David Wellesley Wesley about inspiration, imagination and The Independent Schools Show So, tell us, what exactly made you launch the ISS? It was actually the result of chance encounter with my old school in 2006. That, and an obvious lack of information for parents when choosing the right school for their child. League tables had far too much influence and prospectuses all seemed to say the same thing. I wanted to do something which would change this. How does the ISS help potential parents make their decision? Firstly, ‘The Theatre’ provides lessons in education – we create talks which are of maximum value to parents themselves. Secondly, there’s the ‘Wise Heads’ area, which provides free, independent and impartial advice on all pedagogical matters. Finally, and probably best of all, representatives from each of the 170 exhibiting schools are there for parents to talk with face-to-face. It’s especially good for busy parents, as all your questions can
be answered under one roof in as little as a couple of hours. What was your personal experience of schooling? I started off at The Mall School in Twickenham, before moving to Ashdown House at the age of eight, and The Kings School, Canterbury at thirteen. I loved them all. Personally, I don’t think London is the best place for teenagers, so I’m a firm believer in weekly boarding at that stage. Not only does it let you fit in vast amounts to a school day, but you’re also surrounded by all of your best friends. It’s a great way to nurture a child’s interests, confidence and imagination. How has the show developed in recent years? New for 2013 is the London Schools Pavilion, a selection of leading local nursery schools and pre-preps. In fact, each year we attract a finer selection of school options. For instance, this year Winchester and Eton are coming for the first time.
What will be the next big education trend? ‘Teaching in the round’ – that is to say, teaching in smaller groups with far more student-teacher interaction. I’m also expecting to see a reduction in final exam assessments and an increase in continuous assessment, much like the GPA system in the US. And finally, what do you hope parents will take away from a day at ISS? I would hope that they’d find attractive solutions to London’s crazily competitive places. There’s a vast amount of schools on offer, each with a different curriculum and ethos. Consider alternative options – a different route isn’t necessarily a bad one. For example, two siblings may well attend completely different schools and then converge at university level. It’s worth having an open mind. How old is Yum Yum now? How do you explain its success? Yum Yum is now the grand, old age of 21, and the secret to its success is that we are are a family-run business with family values to the core. How did you the come up with Yum Yum’s glamorous decor? We travelled around, visiting our favourite restaurants, then worked with Ignite marketing and design. You also own Stoke Newington’s Japanese eatery, Oishii; is the restaurant business exhausting work? Yes! But the energy levels are very high as the team who run it have a very loyal customer base. Has the national obsession with food and global flavours helped business? It’s been very challenging. I started training in 1982 as a south Indian chef, specialising in Keralan cuisine and working on achieving the real, authentic taste, textures and flavours of that specific cuisine. Now, 31 years later, I am finding that people want the real taste and ingredients of authentic Thai street food... but I have to say, I am really excited. This widespread appreciation of food in general has contributed to our success.

Why did you decide to settle in Stoke Newington? What was the area like when you first arrived? Originally, my mum decided to set up an Indian vegetarian restaurant in Stoke Newington back in 1982; at that time every third shop in the area was boarded up and quite a lot of properties had squatters. We’ve since taken that over. Where do you get your inspiration for dishes - do you return to Thailand much? Inspiration comes from travelling; we’ve just got back from Cornwall, where we spent time at the fish markets and on fishing boats, catching the fresh produce of the day. We do really look at the ingredients available locally and marry them up with authentic Thai tastes. What kind of cuisine do you most like to eat yourselves? It’s varied. We love to cook using pulses and vegetables and last week cooked a large pot of Aloo Gobi – potato and cauliflower curry – using an amazing combination of garlic, ginger, chillies with tomato puree and onions with freshly roasted ground cumin seeds and turmeric. Pad Woon Sen Ta Ray (Glass Noodles with Mixed Seafood)
SERVES 2: INGREDIENTS: • 4 tablespoons corn or vegetable oil • 400g glass noodles • 2 teaspoons dark soy sauce • 2 teaspoons caster sugar • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce • 2-3 teaspoons pickled garlic • Few pieces of mixed seafood – clams, mussels, squid small prawns, scallops, crab meat (as per choice) • 1 dozen slices carrot • ½ dozen mushrooms • ½ dozen shallot onions • ¼ dozen scallions • ½ dozen small broccoli florets • 2 medium eggs METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Heat the wok, add the oil and heat up until medium hot. 2. Stir-fry the noodles for about 30 seconds, making sure they are well coated with the oil. 3. Add the dark soy, followed by the sugar and light soy, again making sure the noodles are well coated.
4. Add all the vegetables and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes: the larger the cuts of vegetables, the more time will be needed to cook them through. 5. Add all the mixed seafood and start stirfrying along with the soya sauce and the vegetables. 6. Crack the eggs over the noodles so they land whole, as if you were frying them for breakfast. 7. As soon asthe eggsbeginto cook, scramble them vigorously into the noodles along with thevegetablesandmixedseafood,sotheystirfry and mix well together. 8. Serve very hot.

O
ld Street’s continued evolution gathered pace with the recent launch of Rotary Bar & Diner, a temporary pop-up from the crew behind the Milk & Honey members’ clubs. For this new venture, which is open late every night until December, they’ve gone for a retro après-ski vibe, with ‘70s-style deep leather sofas, lots of wood and a mural of snowy mountains and chalets conjuring the cosy, kitschy feel of a ski lodge. The effect is warming, and even before we’ve eaten my partner and I are happily ensconced, watching a host of hip young things fill up the bar stools and window counters. As befits the lounge lizard décor, cocktails are big here. A tenner nets you a pint of whatever classic you fancy, from a mojito to a margarita. We chose the former and a Hawaiian stone sour. The menu is neatly ordered and aimed squarely at the capital’s ever-growing taste for high-end comfort food. With three categories – buns, wood grill and barbeque – broken down into chicken, beef, fish and veggie sections, there’s all manner of smoky, sticky grub on offer, and it’s tough to decide which option sounds most alluring. We eventually share a starter of sticky chicken wings, which
arrive fried in buttermilk and completely irresistible, followed by a classic Rotary beef burger and a Day Boat bun – featuring Cornish pollack, pickled fennel, spicy crab and, yes, more buttermilk. Both were set apart from London’s current glut of ‘gourmet’ burgers by their sweet, wood-smoked flavour and fluffy, buttery brioche buns. The dripping chips, too, were amazing, crunchier and tastier than any we’d eaten elsewhere. There’s no point denying it: by this point, we were full, but we scrambled together some small reserves of hunger and ordered the salted milk chocolate pudding – a whippedup, creamy dream coated with your choice of toppings. We went for smashed Oreo cookies and white chocolate crumble, and as you’d imagine, were left with no cause for regret. It was the perfect sweet treat after the meatier start to our meal, and put us in the mood for further adventures. Fortunate for us, then, that Milk & Honey itself is just downstairs, and allows non-members to reserve a table up till 11pm in the earlier part of the week. The low-lit bar’s ‘50s-style Mad Men vibe made a perfect ending to an evening lounging at The Rotary – though it’s the salted caramel pudding that will keep us coming back.
ew to Islington, Como 3 Cantina Chic lives up to its name. Both the food and the decor are superstylish, and although the concept can be a little hard to get your head around, it’s very easy to get your fork into. The menu centres on sharing plates, and with chefs from Spain and Japan, sharing dishes are in the restaurant’s culinary DNA. Sitting at the counter (which is soon to become a proper sushi counter), I take a look at the menu – and am immediately grateful that sampling a number of dishes is the order of the day. Bread by Boulangerie de Paris is a good place to start, together with a glass of Spanish wine to whet the palate. The wine list has a lot to offer, featuring over 40 regions ranged across several continents, and there’s a tipple to suit every dish. Next stop are the tradicionales, and I can’t get past the croquettes y caramelos board, a perfect starter that includes goat’s cheese and blueberry wrapped in wonton pastry. Up next is stuffed squid ikameshi, a special that proved so alluring it permanently (squid) inked itself onto the menu. And rightly so: it’s delicious. One of the defining principles of Como 3 is to include customers in the creation of the menu, a savvy move that sees popular dishes evolving and improving according to feedback. The carnivorous will love the cured Spanish meat, Japanese Wagyu beef and suckling pig, which you can order whole and which can feed groups up to eight-strong. This is a telling point, because along with the ‘share and share alike’ ethos, groups are made very welcome here. There’s a convivial atmosphere and plenty of space, with long tables for larger parties. Fun light shades and a papier mâché bull’s head have come all the way from France, and add to the lively ambience. An impressive new offering for worldly-wise London locals and visitors alike, Como 3 Cantina Chic is beyond fusion dining, a smart blend of classic dishes and ingredients put together by truly talented chefs, bringing world flavours to Islington’s food scene. 11-13 Theberton Street, N1; Como3.com

here is nothing remotely like 18 Folgate Street anywhere else in London. Its dream-like, fantasy interior was the life’s work and vision of Dennis Severs (194899), an oddball but gifted American collector, who acquired the house as a shell in 1979. Over the next 20 years he painstakingly assembled each room as a sequence of experiences or “spells” reflecting the decoration, furnishings, textures, light, sounds and even smells of different periods of the past from 1724 to 1914. Meticulously researched, many of the finishes were mocked up in the manner of stage scenery using inexpensive materials like discarded timber from the nearby Spitalfields Market to replicate panelling or chimneypieces. All is artifice. Nothing is what it seems, yet it conveys a haunting sense of the past embalmed. Marked by a bracketed Windsor lantern over the entrance door, externally there is little to distinguish the three-bay-wide house of 1724 from its neighbours, other than the unusual trellis pattern carved into the box frames of the first floor sash windows. However, on entering, the visitor is transported into an atmospheric time warp as though walking through a frame into a painting with a time and life of its own, where he becomes part of a tableau vivant , part theatre, part fantasy, part invisible performance art and part still-life drama. The visitor experiences each room in silence, absorbing the moods and ambience of each as a mute witness. Severs’s aim was to give visitors “a rare moment in which they become as lost in another time as they appear to be in their own”. Severs invented an entirely fictional silkweaving family – the Jervises – around which the experiences revolve. Half-eaten food and
half-filled wine glasses lie strewn around the rooms amongst bowls of fruit, guttered candles and pungent pomanders as if the family has just left the room as one enters. Recorded sounds of the 18th century city outside and from next-door rooms are used to startling theatrical effect to convey the impression of being a silent observer of everyday household life. Clocks chime. A canary chirps. The stairs creak and whispers can be heard just outside the door. The smoking room is artfully arranged to reflect the Hogarth picture which hangs within it: the miasma of cigars pervading the air. The drawing room is aggrandised and dressed with garlands of walnut shells (opposite below). The boudoir above is left as though the occupants have just risen, with an unmade bed and unemptied chamber pot. As one rises through the house to the top floor the scene shifts to Dickens’s London and abject poverty. Washing is hung across the staircase; the paint is peeling. Cobwebs hang in the corners. A thick layer of dust coats every surface and rags hang at the windows. For all its artifice, stagecraft and illusion, 18 Folgate Street conveys a much more compelling presentation of past London life than the rather sterile, sanitised approach of the great heritage organisations and museums. The Hotel
When we get to Calcot Manor, it is abuzz. People are arriving for a wedding in the 14th century tithe barn, 4x4s are disgorging blondes at the entrance to the hotel’s spa, small children are running around immaculate lawns in chill winter sunshine and the Gumstool pub, one of two restaurants in the hotel, is packed with visiting families and well-heeled locals in shiny wellies. This country house hotel, set in more than 220 acres of Cotswolds countryside near Tetbury in Gloucestershire, has managed that rare thing; it is all things to all people. It is both brilliantly family-friendly, with a staffed creche plus a raft of children’s activities, and the perfect hideaway for weekending, couples.
The Spa
To sit immersed, a glass of cold champagne in hand, in the bubbling outdoor hot tub whilst a well-stoked fire roars in a brazier behind you and the reddening sun sets on a cold winter’s day must be one of life’s true pleasures. Calcot Spa is hugely popular, and rightly so. It offers both an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steamroom, gym and a wealth of treatments for guests and members alike. A recent addition to the treatment menu is the Rodial skincare brand. An hour’s Sculpt Facial using Rodial’s Dragon’s Blood Serum range (£70) was not only relaxing but left my tired, windswept skin feeling really soft, smooth and rejuvenated.
The Damage

There are 35 individually designed rooms to choose from. These include ten dedicated family rooms housed in converted farm buildings which surround the courtyard, whilst the ancient Cotswold stone manor house is home to 12 bedrooms to suit couples. Our room was a so-called ‘large family suite’, although ‘house’ would be a more accurate description of our picturesque little clapboard cottage with its own garden and front door. Inside was pure luxury with a huge double bed in a large open room, plus another bedroom with bunks and an entire first floor given over to bathroom heaven. Under the eaves, two large adjacent baths faced a wall-mounted TV, and there is also a large walk-in shower. Naturally, we opted for a his ‘n’ hers bath (each filled to the brim with Aromatherapy Associates bubbles courtesy of the hote)l and wallowed in front of trash telly until we had both turned into prunes.
The Restaurant
The more formal of the two restaurants, The Conservatory, underwent an overhaul last year with a new look, new cocktail bar and a change of menu. Out went the classic ‘finedining’ and in came a more informal, eclectic menu. The chef, however, has stayed the same and, as a result, the menu is somewhat missing a distinct identity. However, our starters of risotto Milanese and beef shin were delicious and a main of marinated beef fillet was a notable highlight. Save room for starters rather than dessert – the better end of the menu. 75

Tales of the From Singapore to Bangkok, Harriet Compston takes a trip back in time aboard the glamorous Eastern & Oriental Express
A
n experience so luxurious you almost can’t believe it’s true. Timeless and elegant, this is a grande dame whose journeys are staggeringly good – and totally spectacular. The Fable of the Hills is the latest extravaganza from the Orient Express and, boy, what a triumph. Starting in Singapore, it’s a magical seven-day, six-night trip through Malaysia, past buzzing cities, tea plantations and royal palaces, before emerging in Bangkok. A stay in the wedding-cake-white Raffles – whose namesake founded Singapore – kicks off the enthralling adventure. A perpetual haven, the feel is romantic colonial: traditional afternoon tea, lots of pretty chandeliers, fourposters, marble… yet it’s not stuck in a time warp. This is a place bang up-to-date with Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co lining the courtyards. There are four restaurants, which cover any cuisine you can possibly imagine – ask for the legendary Singapore Sling, a lethal cocktail and another example of the hotel’s excellence. Even check-in for the Eastern
& Oriental Express is done in one of their reception rooms before you’re whisked off to the station. The storybook train is just what you imagine and more. Glistening in the Asian sun, lashings of green and cream decorate the 22 carriages. It looks so classic that you expect Poirot to come round the corner any second. He would have approved of the dress code too – relaxed refinement. No jeans or trainers, people! The imperial elegance (and the colour scheme) continues inside. Every wall is decorated in elm, cherry, teak and rosewood. Cabins are two person, postage stamp size but it doesn’t matter. Beds transform into upholstered sofas while nifty design tricks provide bucket loads of storage (even your suitcase is swallowed up). There’s a sparkling ensuite bathroom to boot with Bulgari products and a power shower. The spirit of Agatha Christie remains: the slick making up of beds, the pushing of bells to summon drinks, the whisperings in the corridor, the knock on the door by your personal butler (the smiley Prochak is a favourite). Venture out of your
new-found bedroom, down the thick carpeted corridors and there are plenty of places to relax: the saloon, library, bar, and the breezy observation carriage. There’s also neither reception nor wifi – basically no modern distractions whatsoever. The food is wonderful. Head Chef Yannis Martineau is a whizz in the kitchen – think beautifully presented grilled snowfish steak accompanied by teppanyaki of vegetables in a vermouth and soya sauce. Breakfast and afternoon tea are served in your room. Lunch and dinner (a dressy affair) boast umpteen courses and take place in the dining car with its archetypal gold lamps and brass overhead racks. Drinks and canapés are served beforehand so you can get to know your fellow guests (a fascinating mix of avid travellers, anniversary couples, siblings, best friends et al). Days are filled with incredible adventures (there are several options each day). Beginning with the crossing of The Straits of Johor into Malaysia, the train snakes its way to the first stop – the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. An industrial hotspot, sprawling factories squeeze 77

in amongst the mosques, bazaars and occasional British beauty (the cricket ground is very English). Having climbed past massive banana trees and luscious vegetation, a cuppa awaits in the Cameron Highlands. A tapestry of tea plantations, it’s mind-blowingly scenic with strawberry farms and flower galleries lying prettily by the wayside. This beauty spot is also home to one of Malaysia’s greatest mysteries: the disappearance of ‘silk king’ Jim Thompson 50 years ago. Yes, in true voyeur fashion, you can follow in his footsteps through the jungle. The vibrant island of Penang serves as the highlight of the trip. Founded in 1786 by Englishman Captain Francis Light, its colonial capital Georgetown radiates colour with its rich blend of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures. Hair-raising trishaws speed around in their bossy way as the sweltering streets heave with people, market stalls and places of worship. Dinner is hawker food – super delicious (the fish is excellent), cheap as chips and served in an outdoor eating area as buzzy as a honeypot. As the train rattles on, the Malaysian jungle gives way to the open Thai countryside. The thatched houses on stilts remain but bright green rice paddies now pop up, peppered with straw-hatted farm workers steering water buffalos through the fields. The wildlife part of the expedition begins. Decamp to the Monkey Training College at Surat Thani where its skillful ‘students’ are taught how to choose a ripe coconut and collect them from the trees. Or visit an elephant camp and jump on a ride with a mahout. The River Kwai is the last stop of the journey – and a very moving one. After a tour on a local barge, the Thailand-Burma Railway Museum gives a horrific insight into the
the slums, the rooms are fresh with clean lines and boast a view which will take your breath away. The numerous restaurants are fantastic – choose Sala Rim Naam (a hop across the water) or hang out in the author’s lounge, where Somerset Maugham, Tennessee Williams, Joseph Conrad, and many other literati have held court. Bangkok’s a whirlwind but worth a few days. Head to the Grand Palace, which is so lined with gold that you are almost blinded. Or visit Jim Thompson’s house, made up of six antique Thai houses – so beautiful that you want to change your décor back home immediately. But this is also a city of contrasts: in amongst these landmarks lie the ‘forgotten people’ and the watery slums they live in – shocking and a stark reminder of the opulence the Orient Express lavishes upon you. It’s hard heading home. This is an experience you know that you’re unlikely ever to repeat. But in the ever-wise words of Monsieur Poirot: ‘Life is like a train, Mademoiselle. It goes on.’ atrocities inflicted on the POWs working on the project. The Don Rak War Cemetery next door provides a raw testimony to the 6,982 soldiers who died. As The Fable of the Hills comes to a close and you draw into Bangkok, you don’t want to leave. Living on a train is actually rather nice. In a surreal way, it has started to feel like home. However, the madness of the city soon awakens you from any slump of sorrow. As does your beautiful bed for the night – the Mandarin Oriental. A cocoon of comfort towering above

Although, saying that, my 8 month old baby is learning to walk on the first floor and is cared for by the latest member of the solicitors firm; my wife! So I do get to see him for 2 days of the week. As a business we have now settled into our new home and we will soon be helping many others to settle into theirs. Demand for property in the area is high and transactions move swiftly - a one bed flat recently marketed was sold within 24 hours. It is hectic and exciting. The benefit of having the solicitors upstairs is that they deal with the conveyancing which helps alleviates the stress of buying and selling. Sellers are keen to explore my unique offer of paying one fee and having just one number to call! Currently I am also project managing renovations on a lovely terraced house in Etheldene Avenue for one of our Landlords. I love walking through the manicured front gardens of the Rookfield Estate on a daily basis. I was asked the other day if I were to live in Muswell Hill which road I would choose. hen I was 7 years old I drove a full size dump truck on a building site - from then on I was addicted to all things property. My father has been a solicitor running the family firm for over 30 years, but his real passions are property and cars, both of which have definitely rubbed off on me. When the opportunity arose to buy offices with a high street presence in Muswell Hill it didn’t take much convincing to get him on board. We virtually demolished and rebuilt the offices. I say ‘we’ because I laboured onsite for 6 hours a day and then returned to my desk for the pm session as a solicitor! It is a real sense of accomplishment to now sit every morning behind my estate agent’s desk, after having project managed the construction site for over 6 months. We have met a few locals who think we must be mad to open an agency in Muswell Hill, given the competition and financial climate, but I am adamant that the one thing that gives Muswell Hill its vibrancy is the independents. Being independent is great - no corporate pressure, just a human approach to selling property, with the added twist that a legal background allows me to view properties with a practical approach. Anyone can upload a few pretty pictures onto a website but, from the outset I can assess the title documents containing easements and restrictive covenants, which may seem rather boring, but is crucial when it comes to selling and buying property. I then pass it upstairs who then deal with the conveyancing. It has not been easy. The hardest part is getting used to working
