LETTER

SEPTEMBER 2013

A

lthough September heralds the end of summer and the arrival of that melancholy back-to-school feeling, I’ve decided to keep my chin up by embracing the new season in fashion. Th is time of year is when British fashion comes into its own; we Brits really know how to work a look in more temperate conditions. The current love affair with pink puts an autumnal spin on a spring colour, and Felicities Showroom in Shoreditch is on-hand to outline this and other key trends for the months ahead. Leading designers may currently be preparing to showcase their SS14 looks at London Fashion Week, but for the incoming AW13 collections expect a mish-mash of textures, tartan and plaid fabrics, plus a defi nite nod to the punk rebellion. A ‘best of British’ chord is about to be struck, and as the new academic year gets underway it’s a fi ne time for all of us to study up and strut our stuff. Style and interior design are obvious bedfellows, so in keeping with the fashion theme, we take a tour of one of Matrushka’s recent London renovations, for Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. The company’s founder and creative director, Joanna Berryman, is a lover of art, fashion and design history, and her ‘poetic chaos’ approach to projects has resulted in many a beautiful living space. The ex-wife of Coldplay’s bassist, it’s no wonder Berryman’s style has been described as ‘rock and roll meets high fashion’. In food news, Canary Wharf welcomes the recent opening of Tom’s Kitchen, another project by fiery red-headed chef Tom Aikens. Th is East London outpost (his popular Chelsea canteen opened in 2006 with a Somerset House iteration following three years later) is surely a sign of Canary Wharf ’s ongoing evolution, from sterile City Boy workspace to thriving lifestyle Mecca. Of course, the East End has been on the up for years, but it’s good to see the Docklands getting its share of the excitement - and waving its old identity, as an impersonal labyrinth of elevators, escalators and chain stores, goodbye. Bravo, Tom, and bravo Edwina Langley, who grills the dishy chef on his reasons for crossing the river to join the Westferry circus. I do hope you enjoy the issue.

PICK

Traditionally associated with spring and summer, pink is sticking around in a big way for autumn. Reddish skies, dusky sunsets, berry hues and shades of Pink Lady apples and penny-chew gum paraded their way down the catwalks; pink coats were a hit too, whether in muted, pastel shades or of the fluffier Pink Panther variety. As such, I’m fully behind the unlikely style icon that is Thunderbirds’ Lady Penelope, and have paired this Simone Rocha suit (sassed up by a mini-skirt) with these crystal-embellished Miu Miu dolly shoes. If this outfit is a little saccharine for your taste, you could stick with darker colours while investing in a pink coat for outdoor wow factor.

KINGS PLACE FESTIVAL

KINGS PLACE 13-15 September

Do the good folk at Kings Place ever sleep? If their programme of events is anything to go by, the answer is rarely and little luckily for the rest of us. The forthcoming Kings Place Festival is a case in point, offering a year’s worth of events over three jam-packed days. There really is something for everyone, from experimental jazz and Indian dance recitals to ukulele workshops and barge trips along the Regent’s Canal, while tickets cost just £4.50 per person, per event. Our hot tip? The Bloodaxe poetry showcase on Saturday at 2pm, featuring (among others) the brilliant Fleur Adcock. 90 York Way, N1; kingsplace.co.uk

JESS WILSON SOLO EXHIBITION JEALOUS GALLERY From 19 September

Illustrator Jess Wilson returns to the Jealous space with her new show Always Turn Left, featuring a bright and beautiful range of limited edition prints and murals. A series of light-hearted reworkings of classic signs and maps, Always Turn Left sees Wilson bring the familiar to life with her quirky and colourful imagination. From the London Underground to world maps, from ‘Save the Bees’ to ‘No Mobile Phone Zone’ signs, visitors can expect an optimistic, eye-catching take on everyday life that’s sure to please. 27 Park Road, N8; jealousgallery.com

QUADROPHENIA NIGHT O2 ACADEMY ISLINGTON 20 September

Franc Roddam’s 1979 fi lm is brought back to life in celebratory style this month, as the O2 Academy Islington hosts a big-screen showing followed by a night of retro partying. Viv Stansall of ‘80s legends The Specials will spin tunes while rock ‘n’ rollers The Atlantics will perform hits from the movie live. Dress code is ‘handsome’, so you’re advised to bust out your sharpest vintage threads. N1 Centre, 16 Parkfield Street, N1; o2academyislington.co.uk

CULTURE THE SNAIL AND THE WHALE JACKSON’S LANE 7-8 September

The Snail and the Whale is the story of an adventure-loving mollusc who goes to sea with the help of a giant humpback. Together they explore the oceans deep - but when disaster strikes, can the tiny snail save the great whale’s life? Kids will love this take on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s picture-book tale of unlikely friendship. Expect physical storytelling, great music and lots of laughs. Tickets £8.95, 269A Archway Road, N6; jacksonslane.org.uk

THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES PHOENIX CINEMA 10 September

The 1973 showdown between then-player of the moment Billie Jean King and 1940s champion-turned-hustler Bobby Riggs was tennis’ equivalent of a grudge match. Riggs was a self-confessed ‘male chauvinist pig’ and King an articulate proponent of equality of the sexes; this amazing documentary captures the political tensions between the two in the lead-up to the most-watched tennis game of all time. Riveting stuff - and the ending may surprise you. 52 High Road, N2; phoenixcinema.co.uk

HIDE AND SEEK

THE FREUD MUSEUM 4-29 September A special exhibition of artwork created by children involved with the charity Kids Company, Hide and Seek offers visitors a fascinating and poignant glimpse into the minds of youngsters who have suffered - and survived diverse hardships. In the words of Kids Company founder (and all-round good egg) Camila Batmanghelidjh, ‘Those who hide always hope that someone kind will someday find them, and be happy.’ A remarkable showcase for the talents and emotional insights of some amazing children - and a great introduction to a laudable organisation. 20 Maresfield Gardens, NW3; freud.org.uk

EXISTING IN COSTUME BEN URI GALLERY Until 22 September

Korean photographer Chan-Hyo Bae raises challenging questions in this inspired series of self-portraits, part of the gallery’s wider Looking In exhibition. Each image shows Bae dressed in historic British costumes, prompting serious and striking reflections on the visibility of ethnic minority individuals in a predominantly white society. A ripe and witty study of the stereotypes endemic in our culture and a real must-see. 108A Boundary Road, NW8; benuri.org.uk

f fragrance is ‘an expression of who you are’, as perfumer Lyn Harris puts it, then the same could be said about her Notting Hill store, which is every inch a reflection of its 45-year-old owner’s distinctive aesthetic and down-toearth sensibility. It’s all heady ambience and rich colours –but alongside the luxe, effortless glamour, the occasional bockety junkshop piece fi nds its way in too. Since she founded Miller Harris with her French husband Christophe in 2000, mixing up concoctions in the basement of her North London home, business has boomed, and fragrances such as La Pluie, L’Air de Rien

and Fleur Oriental have become modern classics. Now there is also Miller Harris tea, olive oil and candles. Harris is a great believer in ‘affordable luxuries’ in times of austerity. ‘I think women will skip other things, but we always like to have a good perfume and a few other small luxuries.’ In the laboratory downstairs endless jars containing exotic sounding ingredients, from Iris Root to Jamaican lime, are lined up on shelves. Classical music waft s soothingly from the speakers – Harris always listens to music while experimenting in her lab, if not classical, then reggae or jazz. ‘Usually something from Honest Jons,’ she says, as she settles into her sleek Cappellini chair and pours

us a cup of Miller Harris tea, which is ‘not too flowery’, she assures me. ‘Maybe it’s my Yorkshire roots, but my tea is more about character than fragrance.’ So what’s the key to perfume making? ‘Having a detailed sense of smell and knowing how to create a formula and then how to dissect that formula,’ she explains.‘There are different segments – such as citrus top notes, herbs and spices. I start by working with raw materials, for instance a fig note, and it can take several attempts.’ The natural ingredients are ‘the soul’ of her creations, she says. ‘And certain fragrances can bring out subconscious or suppressed memories or emotions – I see that a lot when I make

bespoke fragrances for clients.’Harris opened her laboratory and store in Needham Road more than a decade ago, and has since expanded with two other Miller Harris stores – in Mayfair and Covent Garden. Although Lyn’s brand is a magnet for celebrity clients – Alexa Chung, Jane Birkin, Madonna,Victoria Beckham among them– one of the things she loves most about the area is the fact that ‘no one cares’ when they see a famous face. Harris was always obsessed with France and fragrance, and as a teenager, worked Saturdays in a perfume shop, sweeping the f loor. Her parents taught her that anything was possible. ‘They taught us to be who we are – in Yorkshire you speak your mind, which gets you a long way in life I think.’ It was while training under a master perfumer at Robertet Grasse that she met Christophe. The couple settled in London, set up the business in 2000 and had a son, Henri, now seven. All very idyllic, but life is not without its difficult moments. ‘I think just being a woman is challenging. There are so many demands on you – at work, at home. I take looking after my family seriously, including my parents who I’m very close to. And being a woman in business is very challenging – you have to believe in yourself, not be scared to speak out.’ It has certainly worked for Harris, anyway. Her brand remains classic and luxurious, uncompromised by the need to expand too quickly or with

‘Fragrances can bring out subconscious or suppressed memories or emotions’

too many commercial interests and her toiletries are favoured by Firmdale Hotels. The secret of her success? ‘Always put a smile on your face,’ she says, with a suitably broad grin. ‘It will make you feel better and make it all work out. And don’t be scared of anything, there’s nothing to fear – worrying is a waste of time.’ Spoken like a true Yorkshire lass. millerharris.com SCENTS AND SENSIBILITY • •

A cologne is a lighter, more dilute version of a perfume. The convention of applying perfumes to pulse points – the nape of the neck, wrists and so on – stems from the fact that the scent is released by the warming of the blood in those places. Modern fragrances are often constructed in layers, so that different elements of the scent will be released over time. Dry skin does not retain fragrance as well as oily skin – while eating spicy or fatty foods can increase the intensity of a scent. The fragrance industry divides its products into olfactory categories such as Bright Floral and Oriental. The newest category is the Oceanic, which is largely made up of scents based around the synthetic aromatic compound calone. Calone was discovered in 1966 and is best typified by androgynous, ozonic scents like Davidoff ’s Cool Water. In 2005, archaeologists discovered the remains of an ancient perfume workshop in Pyrgos, Cyprus. The 43,000 square foot factory was over 4,000 years old!

TIP

GET SHORTY Loath to put your denim shorts away so quickly? Channel your inner Japanese schoolgirl with some over-the-knee socks for a youthful stamp on denim-wearing. Beat the chill by dusting off your biker jacket once more et voilà! A wardrobe update that will keep you in shorts for at least another month.

TARTAN ARMY The spirit of rebellion was made plain on the AW13 catwalks, as designers everywhere matched tartan with punk embellishments – leather, PVC or latex trims, bovver boots, spikes and studs. The challenge is to work the look into your everyday wardrobe. We love this shift dress from Jigsaw: a simple, beatnik take on the trend. A wrap-over mini-skirt is one simple way of employing the look without going overboard. Wool skirt, £99; Stratford Westfield, E20; karenmillen. com

MY STYLE

Chrystina Schmidt of Skandium reveals her inspirations

Most inspiring experience? Every time I am given free hand to refurbish a person’s space. I am always honoured when people give me their trust and let me guide the space to bring it to it’s best potential within the given budget. Most treasured possession? That constantly changes as one is living in an ever-changing flow but right now it is a new table light designed by Andreas Engesvik, from Norway. It is unlike anything else, with a very different attitude which lifts my spirit. Favourite designer? There are so many, so whom to pick? It is more about particular pieces, every good designer has a highlight... like the light mentioned above by Andreas, or the Cité chair by Jean Prouvé. That again was a very innovative chair when it was launched and still is! There is Paul Kjaerholm, ever relevant, such understated elegance. But likewise Bruno Mathsson, so different from the others, they are each other’s opposites, yet all have created timeless, comfortable pieces. The list is endless and I love so many! Favourite holiday destination? Any place with beautiful nature but I particularly love Japan, the island in the south of the country and the Como Shamhbala hotels anywhere! Heaven, here I come! Favourite piece of furniture? Hmm... again, maybe the Cité chair by Jean Prouvé. Skandium best-seller? Moomin mugs, would you believe it but actually, our Bello chest of drawers sell remarkably well. 86 Marylebone High Street, W1; skandium.com

Created by ShaoLan Huesh, Chineasy is a visual–led system for learning how to recognise Chinese characters. Whole School Open Day Saturday 21st September 2013 8.30am-1.30pm Sixth Form Open Evening Monday 16th September 2013 4.30pm-8.00pm

London’s only diamond structure school and one of the very few in the country, Forest School is located on the edge of Epping Forest in north east London. Established in 1834, our 1290 boys and girls are aged 4-18 and are taught in single-sex classes from the ages of 7-16. Our school buses cover London and Essex and new routes are added every year.

EDUCATION

SINGLE SEX, CO-EDUCATIONAL OR SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE?

T

t seems the debate about single sex and co-educational schooling has raged since time immemorial, with parents swayed by argument and counter-argument on the merits and faults of each. What is certain is that school choice should be determined by the child: what will he or she feel most comfortable with? Single sex or co-educational? Perhaps a combination of both? Forest School is London’s only diamond structure school and is one of very few in the country. This means that while both boys and girls are admitted to the school, they are taught in single sex classes at key stages of their education. HOW DOES IT WORK? From the ages of 4-7, pupils are taught in coeducational classes in the Pre-Preparatory School before moving into single sex classes from the ages of 7-11. From 11-16, our pupils are attached to either the Boys’ or Girls’ School before joining the co-educational Sixth Form at 16. What makes the diamond structure work is that boys and girls can mix outside of the classroom and on the co-

curriculum. Forest School is three schools in one: our 1290 pupils are in the Preparatory School, Girls’ School or Boys’ School. All of our pupils are taught on the same school grounds in Snaresbrook, Northeast London. THE BENEFITS We are able to maximise the benefits of single sex teaching at different stages of a child’s education. Boys and girls can grow up without the pressures that come from contact and attention from the opposite sex in the classroom. Unlike at single sex schools, pupils are able to maintain an appropriate level of social contact outside of the classroom and on the co-curriculum, in preparation for life at university. Boys and girls are taught the same curriculum and in many cases by the same teachers. Our structure gives us the flexibility to tailor teaching methods according to both the age and sex of the class. As Forest is three schools in one, we are in the privileged position of being able to take advantage of the many positive characteristics of a small school while benefiting from the infrastructure and feel of a much larger school. Forest is an ‘all-through’ school,

so families who have both boys and girls of differing ages can take advantage of the ‘single drop’ for the school run. Discover Forest School for yourself at our Open Day. Visit forest.org.uk for further information.

WHAT DOES THE HEAD THINK? Sarah Kerr-Dineen, the Warden of Forest School: ‘We believe that our combination of single sex and mixed educational opportunities gives our pupils the best of all worlds. Forest School is three schools in one - within each, the Form and House system means that pupils are looked after in small units of care. Life is not a single sex environment, however, and a child’s social development involves learning to form relationships with a wide range of people. This is where Forest’s diamond structure comes into its own. Outside the classroom, for example, boys and girls of all ages mix in a wide range of co-curricular activities; brothers and sisters share the same school in a way that single sex teaching would otherwise preclude.’

The nude nail will reign supreme for AW13. The shows were awash with every nude colour imaginable and it’s not just plain nude that we’ll be seeing… A more playful take on nude trend sees graphic and geometric patterns in different shades of the colour as well as nude and naked cut-out detailing with added embellishments. For the perfect ‘mannequin hand’ mani, be sure to choose a nude that complements your skin tone and finish with a super high shine from a good quality topcoat. The season will also see the return of the French manicure with a twist; neon or embellished tips, sideways French and boxed-in French... If you want to stick to the clean and classic white French, keep it modern with a very thin tip. Embellishments include leather, denim and tie-dye effects as well as sand and concrete textures. We’ll also see more water-colour, painterly effects, colour washes and bleeds, while 3D add-ons like crystals will be toned-down and more sophisticated. HEALTH

Fringe

Benefits Helen Baron heads to Gary Ingham Lifestyle Salon & Spa for the professional touch

T

his salon is surely a contender for best in the local area – on all fronts. It’s tastefully sleek, which is what you want when you’re gunning for a complete transformation. If you’re hoping to look a million dollars, it tallies that you want to feel it too; at the very least it’s good to know you’ve spent the afternoon somewhere that looks like it’s had a million dollars/pounds spent on it. Time is money, after all... but I digress.

Beauty

In keeping with the Aveda ethos, the salon is a Zen haven, all natural decor, wood furnishings and bamboo motifs. It’s a ‘lifestyle’ salon, so expect equally beautiful treatment rooms; no gloomy cells or pop-up beds here. There’s an impressive list of services and treatments, from a Chakra Balancing Massage to a Rosemary Mint Awakening Body Wrap, so you can make a day of it and really spoil yourself. The level of professionalism is unparalleled, too, which is one reason Aveda salons are building such an envious reputation in the industry.

Hair

Gary (yes, you can book the man himself) talks through my colour options – I need to rectify a badly bleached fringe situation which is causing no end of frizz frustration, especially in the current humidity. He identifies a shade that will give me more bang for my buck (pun intended) and talks me through the process: colour rescue but with maximum gloss, as normally delivered by a toner. What’s more, all Aveda products are naturally derived from plants, even the colour washes, so they aren’t pumped full of nasties. Comfortably ensconced in a super deluxe chair/washing station (this salon means business), I’m given a Scalp Detox and Massage (your head is an ecosystem, apparently, and massage is vital to a healthy head of hair). Gary is a fountain of hair-knowledge and furnishes me with some pearls of wisdom which reveal (a) that I should never have put peroxide on my cows-licks in the first place, and (b) how to blow-dry a stubborn fringe. Wow; my hair is going to get a double-pronged attack once it’s finally recovered from being bleached to death. While I wait for the hair treatment to do its work, I grab a manicure, feeling pretty smug about killing two beauty birds with one stone (I’m guessing women even more time-poor than me could aim for the full hair, mani and pedi combo). At the end of my appointment, my hair is as sleek as the salon itself: a glossy bastion of health and vitality with every last vestige of frizz smoothed and blasted away. An absolute result. Not only do I want to try more of the heavenly-sounding beauty treatments, I now know where to come to understand and overcome my hair nightmares. 63-67 Heath Street, NW3; garyingham.com

Style tip

Smooth Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner are ideal for ensuring your hair look at its best when worn long. It will condition your hair whilst de-frizzing and smoothing without making it feel limp. From the same range, apply Smooth Infusion Style Prep Smoother to wet hair before blow-drying. Th is will protect, de-frizz, smooth and keep your blow-dry looking good thanks to its humidity properties. If you’re looking to add extra oomph to beat the limpness, spritz on Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion. The powder-to-liquid formula works like magic to thicken hair by 17%.’ Michael Lendon Creative Director, AVEDA Institute London

FOOD

LIKE MAMMA USED TO MAKE There’s a real fad for Italian paesan (or countryman) cooking underway, and the capital can’t get enough of ‘cucina povera’. Now Exmouth Market has joined the fray with Paesan, a restaurant set to ‘reinvigorate our conception of Italian cooking’. A way of life as well as a way of preparing food (it’s all about sharing with friends), expect pizza and pasta far superior to what you’ve come to expect at generic Italian chain restaurants. The Old Country would be proud. 2 Exmouth Market, EC1; paesanlondon.com

Bite Sized BAKER BOYS Vivo is a new Islington bakery set to open this month, and one look at their decadent tarts has us setting aside any thoughts of dieting. The project is the first venture by brothers Will and Ben Thompson, who have drawn upon a well of travelling experience and a passion for Italian cuisine to bring the country’s love of pasticceria to Upper Street. 57-58 Upper Street, N1; vivotaste.com

JESSICA’S RECIPE BAG TASTE OF THE MED Another September opening is Gordon Ramsay’s Union Street Cafe. Making its home in Southwark, it will offer Mediterranean fare and a daily changing menu within an urban warehouse setting (with a now almostobligatory open theatre-style kitchen). Artisan ingredients are a key feature, while the chef will of course make use of nearby Borough Market to source seasonal produce. 47-51 Great Suffolk Street, SE1; gordonramsay.com

Jessica Andersson, a chef and nutritional therapist, has designed easy-to-follow recipes for delivery to your door. Apart from a few kitchen essentials, each bag contains all the ingredients for a balanced meal, and including meat, fish, chicken and lots of fresh vegetables and herbs. Meals typically take 3545 minutes from start to finish and you can buy specifically for a couple or a family. The Family Bag (containing ingredients for four meals for four people) costs £69; the Couples Bag (three meals for two people) costs £42. Order online at jessicasrecipebag.co.uk

489 Liverpool Road, N7; assietteanglaise.co.uk What’s the deal? This looks and feels like the neighbourhood restaurant it sets out to be. The owners also run Le Péché Mignon and have set up their new venture adjacent to the green environs of St Mary Magdalene Gardens. Residents are attracted to the noisy clatter of a buzzing corner space with an amply-sized terrace, central bar and luxe-looking leather banquettes. The vibe is that of a sleek hotel brasserie. Why should you go? Classed as ‘modern French’, this is an all-day French dining affair. On Thursday nights a BYOB policy is in operation, while the lazy weekend brunch special is the brioche French toast with maple bacon; traditional roasts are available on Sundays. A favourite with singletons and families alike, the afternoon teas go down a treat with mums in the area.

Runs until 22 September.

PLUM & SPILT MILK

WES KITCHEN

King’s Cross St Pancras is now home to Mark Sargeant and his new restaurant Plum & Spilt Milk (there’s also a dinky artisan sandwich shop on-site). As part of the new Great Northern Hotel, the boutique restaurant favours British flavours new and old. The restaurant itself is luxurious and decadently furnished, as befits its prize position overlooking both the station and London’s newest square.

The clever cats at Fika have started a pop-up based on the fi lms of Wes Anderson; perhaps the only thing more surreal is the master himself. Stars of the menu include the Tenenbaums Dinner, the Foxy Doughnut and the Bee-keeping Society’s Chicken. If the Life Aquatic is your favourite, the signature cocktails incorporate further ingenious nods to Anderson’s cinematic masterpiece. Food and fi lm never looked so good together.

Brooding dark wood contrasts with the almost-neon Sol Bar, a promised land of green and white candy stripes shimmering like a mirage in a dusty desert. Of course, there are the signature Mexican cocktails – but you can also choose from a range of international specialties.

THE PEARSON ROOMS

Gemma Billington does sunset dinner in Canada Square

A

dmittedly, Canary Wharf is not my usual haunt – with its sky-high buildings and suits – but I was looking forward to my dinner reservation at the Pearson Rooms immensely, because whenever I told a friend my impending visit, I was met with a *squeal* of approval. What better recommendation is there? The lift feels very grown-up, and it’s impossible not to get swept up in the atmosphere – which is positively bustling. On arrival, we’re led swiftly to the stylish bar for a refreshing hibiscus mojito recommended by our friendly waiter, Stefano, who seemed to be on a mission to make sure my friend and I were unable to walk home in a straight line. The interior is very nice indeed, with exactly the right amount of retro glamour. It’s all wooden floors, reclaimed furniture and leather seats, but subtly accomplished, with a full awareness that the stunning views of Canada Square from the floor-to-ceiling windows are the real pièce de résistance. The menu is also a pleasant surprise – comprised of a diverse mixture of salads, starters, sandwiches, pasta and mains, it blends seamlessly from brunch to dinner. To start, I choose chargrilled asparagus and poached duck egg on brioche with Hollandaise sauce and parmesan. The verdict? Just wow: a hearty and absolutely delicious dish. Upon learning that my friend is vegetarian, Stefano whisks a bowl of crispy courgette fries under our noses and, before we know it, we’re tucking into our mains; Whitstable crab tagliolini with cherry tomatoes and chilli for me; tagliatelle with peas, courgette, wild rocket pesto and toasted pine nuts for my companion. The portions show a distinct lack of pretension and the dishes are simple enough that you might imagine you could give them a go at home (I can’t vouch for the results, however). Now on a quest not only to intoxicate us but also to see us off half a stone heavier, Stefano insists we try the desserts, serving up three scoops of sorbet (mango, raspberry and coconut) and three of ice cream (chocolate, pistachio and vanilla) forthwith. The fiend. By this point we’ve died and gone to heaven and, watching the sun set behind the huge glass skyscrapers, I suddenly understand the urban beauty of this part of London. Or perhaps it’s the three massive courses, hibiscus mojito, passion fruit and chili cocktail plus glass of wine talking. Whatever the case, the Pearson Room is a superb new addition to your dining to-do list. 16-19 Canada Square, E14; the pearsonroom.co.uk

AQUA SHARD Daniel Agnew discovers panoramic dining in one of Europe’s tallest buildings

T

owering over London like a postmodern cathedral, aqua shard (no caps, please, it’s all very contemporary) is a restaurant where everything happens on a spectacular scale. Born out of and celebrating London’s status in the new global economy, the culinary establishment resides on level 31 of the Shard and presides over a magnificent bay of stars come nightfall. Offering 360-degree views of the capital, the skyline lights up like never before – though it’s important to note that aqua shard is a restaurant, not a tourist attraction. Designed by Jestico and Whiles, the 220-cover establishment has two wings, which take as their guiding motifs two classic English beverages, gin and tea. The service is impeccable, while the decor embraces a minimalist style that ensures the jaw-dropping view is always the star of the show. Not that the food doesn’t muster some very stiff competition. Aqua shard is the brainchild of entrepreneur David Yeo, who has worked alongside head chef Anthony Garlando to create a new and very British menu. Garlando previously worked with the legendary Pierre Gagnaire, and it was evidently not time wasted: the menu offers a new vision for the British culinary tradition. The grilled octopus and Scottish mackerel makes for a gorgeous starter, complemented by tomato sorbet, pickled shallots and aubergine dressing. A glass of Veronese 2011 Marzemino Delle

Venezie provides a delicate floral aroma to accompany mains of roasted wood pigeon and Yorkshire rib-eye, and while the prices hover around the £30 mark, the dishes prove to be exceptionally good value. Served with a blackcurrant sauce, the wood pigeon is a sensual delight, while the rib-eye’s tenderness is stirred by a melodic shallot jam. With some imaginative sides and desserts, guests may want to linger long enough to enjoy cocktails and star-gazing after dinner. As distant boats bob along the Thames, the understated glamour of the capital makes for a beautiful experience. Situated inside western Europe’s tallest building, aqua shard will almost certainly require a few weeks’ advance booking, but its thrilling panorama and top-notch cuisine make it well worth a little forward planning. Edwina Langley: So, tell us about your new venture. Tom Aikens: It’s in Canary Wharf and it’s very similar to Tom’s Kitchen in Chelsea in terms of the menu (home cooked food) and service style. I think the difference between the two is that in the City, lunchtimes are going to be a lot busier. We’ve got a big bar and also a private dining room, which fits about 12-14 and which we’ll turn into a kiddies’ room at the weekend. We’ve got a deli right next to us as well, where we’ll serve breakfast things in the morning (granola, muesli), sandwiches and pre-made boxed salads for lunch, and cookies and cakes throughout the day. EL: Why did you choose that particular location? TA: Canary Wharf is a great place – you have a captive audience. We’re quite different to our competitors there, like Canteen and Roka, who don’t have the deli offering. It’ll be

interesting to see how it goes. We’re hoping there will be a conveyor belt of people going from one Tom’s Kitchen to another, and then another and another… EL: And then world domination! TA: And then world domination, indeed. It’s exciting. And it’s nice for us as it gives us the chance to cross-train staff and promote them from within, moving them across from restaurant to restaurant. EL: Has being a new dad changed you as a chef? TA: It’s changed my whole life. At weekends, I’d always be working and running around doing things but now she’s twenty months old, I simply play with her. It’s really nice because it de-stresses me. Though there is the lack of sleep. I never have a lie-in these days – the only downside. EL: But you must be used to early starts, being a chef and all...

TA: Yes but you do wish for at least one day where you could catch up on sleep EL: Do you help out? TA: I’m very hands-on at weekends and do a lot of the cooking, especially on Sundays. I almost always do a roast. EL: Can you describe your roasts because I’m certain they’re nothing like my roasts. TA: What do you do? EL: Umm… roast beef, potatoes. Bog standard. Nothing special. TA: Ok well, I generally do beef too. So I’ll do a rolled and tied sirloin – EL: Rolled and tied? TA: It’s just a rib of beef, cut off the bone, which you then roll and tie EL: With your hands? TA: No…with string. Give it a trim, nice and tight, so it keeps its shape. I always have people

FOOD shallots and red wine. Reduce that down so it becomes nice and sticky. And then later obviously I’ll do roast potatoes – in beef dripping. EL: You have that just lying around too I suppose? TA: Absolutely! And then vegetables – carrots, peas or broad beans – depending on what’s in season. My daughter will have a concoction of all of that, mushed up – feeding her can sometimes be quite difficult.

earning £80 a week.

EL: During those moments do you ever think to yourself ‘Some people would kill to be eating this’? TA: Yes, but she doesn’t really give a sh*t!

EL: Gosh – heartbreaking! TA: It was! I shed a tear. I did! I was only 24 and I was, like… [pulls a sad face]. I couldn’t believe it. But then I thought ‘Ok, you do your thing, I’ll do mine. See ya later’ [laughs]. I think we’re going to try to do something next year. It’d be great a PR story for us – two twins, two great chefs.

EL: So she’s your harshest critic? TA: Yes. Sometimes she cries, throws it on the floor and turns her nose up at it. Our trick is to bung in something creamy, like cottage cheese, which she loves. It’s our way of getting her to eat things. Not all the time though. For breakfast I’ll make fresh pancakes or waffles. EL: How are you not the size of a house? TA: I go to the gym every afternoon when I’m having a break, for an hour or so. EL: That’s not really a break. TA: It’s an active break – it’s a nice way to escape, to de-stress a bit. So I go to the gym or do a couple of laps of Hyde Park.

round - probably eight or nine. EL: Is there a waiting list? TA: Yes, I bump people off or up, depending [laughs]. So yes lots of people, which means I’ll take the beef out the night before so it’s relaxed by the morning. I’ll start at 10.30am and slow cook it for 2-2.5 hours. Medium rare, of course. I serve it with Yorkshire pudding, a nice red wine sauce and the usual horseradish [mimics grating]. EL: That’s not usual horseradish. Horseradish comes out of a jar. TA: We do sometimes use jars, but we’ll grate some fresh in there too. And then add a bit of extra crème fraiche. For the red wine sauce we’ll do a reduction. EL: No Bisto gravy? TA: [Laughs] Definitely not Bisto gravy. I’ll have taken some stock home from work – never a cube – and then I’ll do a reduction with thyme, bay leaves, pepper corns,

EL: You have a twin brother, Rob, who is also a chef. How did you both get into the culinary world? TA: My mother was a very good home cook and my father was in the wine business. So as kids we grew up amongst good food and wine. We lived in Norfolk and my mother was a keen gardener. From the age of six we started growing our own vegetables – carrots and rhubarb. We started cooking by the age of eight in the kitchen. Simple stuff, like cakes. Then we progressed to making a main meal by the age of 12. EL: Impressive! TA: We knew we wanted to be chefs. And we both didn’t like school. We wanted to join a catering college in Norfolk and when I found out you didn’t need qualifications, I thought, ‘Great! This is the career for me!’ I could see the horror in my parents’ faces when I told them we were going to be chefs. I think they saw us deep-frying chicken at KFC. EL: How was it starting out back then? TA: It was very difficult to begin with. Long hours, tougher working conditions, tougher bosses. But that didn’t matter. Because if you actually got a job in a Michelin-starred restaurant, you were so thrilled you worked your socks off. When I first came to London I was

EL: Then what happened? TA: Then I went to work in France and Rob went to America. My idea was that we’d go abroad separately for a bit then come back and open a restaurant. But when I was working in Paris, just before Rob went to the US, he came over and told me he didn’t want to work together.

EL: Finally, you won the starter course for this year’s Great British Menu. Tell us about it. We’ve heard you’re all hugely competitive in the kitchens. TA: We all respect each other a lot, but once you’re there, you’re in competition. It’s very tense and stressful. Even at the level we’re at, we can all crumble under the pressure. It’s also quite funny to see yourself on TV. I often think, ‘Oh my God, how could I have been like that, I’m going to bits!’ You can literally fall to bloody pieces on camera. EL: Has Pru Leith ever cooked for you? TA: Ha – no! It would be quite nice to turn the tables. But in all seriousness, it’s great fun. And I like that viewers can actually see the attention and skill we put into each dish. But when you watch it on TV, you don’t see how knackered we really are. Being on your feet all that time, with the cameras constantly stopping and starting… You’re also thinking about how you’re coming across – no one wants to be that complete tosser or the mute. You want to be seen as someone who’s fun, lively and chatty – otherwise you just look completely lost and crap. EL: What did you like about the ‘Comic Relief ’ brief in particular? TA: Bringing fun and humour to dishes. Most people think chefs are miserable gits, that we don’t have a funny side, we’ve all got chips on our shoulders and are grumpy and serious. EL: I’m sure you’re never like that. Ever. TA: No [smiles]. With the Comic Relief brief, people could see we have a sense of humour. That we can at least have a joke and a laugh – which was nice.

INTERIORS What was the first thing you thought when confronted with the space? It was in need of some serious enlivening and spatial definition. I was impressed by its handsome proportions and the original windows in the main reception area. Do you approach period houses in the same way or is every property a different story? Every property evokes a varied response from me. I’m often inspired by the raffish splendour of a crumbling period property yet am open to working with a modernist box on a cliff. Do you have a favourite era in architecture or design? I’m having a 1970s moment right now, though I don’t profess to be loyal to any particular era or movement, I find that too limiting How do you add a personal touch – what are the owners like? Curating anglocentric pieces for them and incorporating existing objects and family heirlooms into the scheme. The overall design had to appeal to a professional, US based couple who were keen to inhabit a quintessentially British space. What would be your dream residential job? A Muscovite’s urban palace or a surf shack retreat in Costa Rica. How do you stay one step ahead of the latest interior trends? I try to teeter on the periphery of trends, drawing inspiration from art and nature. My current art obsessions are: Michael Landy’s Saint’s Alive exhibition at the National Gallery and my dear friend Alice Instone’s use of carnal blush tones. What style do you prefer for your own home? functional decadence interspersed with pockets of whimsy What area of london do you live in and why? Hampstead because of the heath, the schools, the dickensian lamp posts and a pint of prawns at the holly bush pub. What constitutes good design for you? For me it’s all about creating a durable structure and canvas allowing for brazen accents and changeable layers. Matrushka HQ, 4 Willoughby Road, NW3; matrushka.co.uk

With Beolab 14, looks can be deceptive. The small satellite speakers are elegant and unobtrusive, yet each one has a treble and mid-range speaker driver, powered by a 140 watt amplier placed in the subwoofer. Hidden inside the subwoofer is also individual equalisation for each driver unit, ensuring a detailed sound from each speaker. The Bang & Olufsen room adaption technology lets you optimise the bass performance to wherever the subwoofer is placed by setting the position dial in the connection panel.

The four small, circular speakers are poised at a slight angle backwards to optimise the audio impact and diminish their visual presence. Each speaker has an anodised aluminium edge which absorbs the colours in the room, making them appear even smaller than they actually are.

BATH PRIORY Were Beau Nash, Georgian Bath’s influential arbiter of taste, to check into the Bath Priory today, he would undoubtedly nod in approval. Sophisticated, elegant and exuding period charm, the Bath Priory hotel exemplifies all that Bath has to offer. Situated a short walk from Royal Victoria Park, Royal Crescent and the city centre’s cornucopia of attractions, this handsome mansion was originally built in 1835 on land once owned by The Priory of Bath Abbey. Behind the honey-coloured stone façade, the cosseting comfort distinguishing the library, drawing room and dining rooms is enhanced by curios, bibelots and a gallery of paintings depicting racy Edwardians, moustachioed majors and smoky-eyed beauties. Tucked away in the award winning landscaped gardens, is an outdoor swimming pool, croquet lawn and a walled kitchen garden providing fresh produce for the restaurant.

BATH PRIORY THE BATHROOM

RESTAURANT

As befits Aquae Sulis (as Bath was known to the Romans) the amply proportioned bathrooms are designed for pleasure, leisure and wellbeing. Choose from the free standing bath, perfect for soaking away a hard day’s sightseeing and shopping or the wet room power shower complete with oodles of Molton Brown toiletries.

Recently awarded his own Michelin Star, Bath Priory’s chef Sam Moody comes with pedigree. Having previously worked in the Michelin-starred kitchens of Ockenden Manor Hotel and The Bath Priory’s sister hotel Gidleigh Park, Sam is following on from former Executive Chef of The Bath Priory restaurant, two Michelin-starred Michael Caines. With the accent on fresh, seasonal produce Sam’s genius lies in creating an artistic, imaginative gourmet experience guaranteed to assault all the senses. Featuring such phenomena as Sparassis, the cauliflower mushroom served with hand dived scallops, and wild venison teamed with picked pear and fat raisins infused in jasmine tea,

THE BEDROOM Bold patterned contemporary fabrics complement traditionally styled furnishings in each of the individually designed, spacious and supremely comfortable rooms. Romantics will appreciate a four poster bed whilst garden lovers will linger on private balconies overlooking the four acres of mature grounds. For families and parties, a number of newly refurbished suites featuring exceptional interiors designed by owner Christina Brownsword, are available in an adjacent mansion. Four legged friends are also welcome in dog-friendly rooms.

THE DAMAGE Bed and breakfast rates start from £210 based on double occupancy and include Full English or Continental breakfast, newspaper, on site car parking and use of the Garden Spa facilities. 01225 331922; thebathpriory.co.uk 65

he place to indulge your inner Upper East Sider. Having just undergone a $60 million refurbishment by master architect and designer Lauren Rottet, The Surrey has reinvented itself to become the darling hangout of New York’s elite. And when you take into consideration that it’s just off Central Park and only a ten-second totter in clacking heels to Madison Avenue, it’s easy to see why. Walk inside this Beaux Art townhouse hotel on 76th Street and you’ll be greeted by a Chuck Close tapestry of supermodel Kate Moss in the lobby – part of the hotel’s 31-piece contemporary art collection and confirmation of The Surrey’s sartorial credentials. Upstairs, rooms are a chic

palette of grey, cream and beige and the Penthouse Suite has its own private wraparound terrace with stunning panoramic views across Central Park. Can’t stretch to the Penthouse? No matter. Head to the 17th floor and you’ll find a private roof-top garden from where you can enjoy equally spectacular views. Meanwhile, the glamorous Bar Pleiades downstairs plays homage to the hotel’s 1920’s heritage and is inspired by fashion pioneer Coco Chanel. With black and white lacquered finishes, French doors and quilted walls, it’s much like being locked inside a classic Chanel handbag – with exceptionally good cocktails to complement the food at Café Boulud next door. Here, renowned chef Daniel Boulud merges French cuisine with American ingredients to Michelin star-winning effect. There’s a reason this restaurant is such a popular pitstop for shoppers. Don’t miss out.

t may look like just a sweet, local boulangerie from the outside but inside, in the words of Ab Fab’s Edie, ‘It’s Lacroix, sweetie! Lacroix!’ Decorated by the eccentric French designer, the interiors are pretty fruity to say the least. Each of the hotel’s 17 rooms is unique, fi lled with an eclectic mix of punchy patterns, clashing colours and opulent fabrics. Striking doesn’t quite cover it – think polka dot carpets in the corridors, baroque mirrors in the bathrooms, Flemish frescoes in the bedroom and ‘60s furniture throughout. There’s also an abundance of original sketches by Christian Lacroix himself, just in case you were in any danger of forgetting that this remarkable hotel is his creation. Only breakfast is served in the hotel’s vintage bistro (complete with its own zinc bar which becomes a guest-only watering hole at night), but when you’re situated in the very heart of Paris’s fashionable Marais district, why wouldn’t you venture outside? Jewish-quarter-come-gay-quarter, Le Marais is home to countless stylish French boutiques – think The Kooples, Sandro, Zadig & Voltaire – and ‘frip’ shops fi lled with vintage treasures. Simply put, it’s the most fashionable place to shop in Paris.

eet are an important part of the body,’ said Salvatore Ferragamo. ‘They tell a story about the character of the person to which they belong.’ But then, surely a hotel does too? Florence’s Hotel Continentale is one of three boutique hotels owned by the Ferragamos, the royal family of footwear. Set in a beautiful medieval building in the historical city centre, don’t be fooled by the hotel’s charming exterior. Inside, Hotel Continentale is all slick white interiors and pared back wood – a modern take on Italian chic – with just a sprinkling of ‘50s style in the form of black and white photographs and hot pink chairs. Climb the hotel’s stairs and you’ll find its undisputed highlight, the La Terraza rooftop bar. Sat on top of the medieval Consorti Tower, the view from here is something of an architectural tour of Florence, encompassing Brunelleschi’s dome, Giotto’s bell and the Ponte Vecchio over the River Arno. A stay here will get you free entry into the Salvatore Ferragamo museum, but the stylish staff can arrange priority access to all of Florence’s top attractions too. Meanwhile, closer to home, the hotel’s White Iris Beauty by Daniela Steiner spa sits in the Medieval Tower. Don’t miss the spa’s signature treatment which, in true Ferragamo style, is a Sublime Feet Pedicure, an indulgent experience which transforms tootsies into feet worthy of a fetish.

AFRICAN

SKIES Jo Caird visits South Africa to investigate Johannesburg’s cultural rebirth

L

et’s not beat about the bush – Johannesburg has a bit of a reputation problem. When I told friends I was going, most made ‘are you sure it’s safe?’ faces, while the man next to me on my outbound journey intoned worrying crime statistics until the in-flight entertainment began. But while it’s undeniably the case that Joburg is more dangerous than, say, Padstow, crime rates have been falling for years now – and as long as you take sensible precautions (the kind you would take in any major city) you’ll be fine. Johannesburg’s unfortunate reputation, along with the fact that Cape Town is better known as a city destination, means that visitors to South Africa tend to pass through on their way elsewhere or skip the city altogether. It won’t be this way for long, though – Jozi is a city on the up. After checking in at the Peech Hotel, a boutique establishment with a gorgeous garden in one of Joburg’s well-to-do northern suburbs, I travel to Newtown to get my bearings on a walking tour of the cultural quarter. Joburg’s Central Business District (CBD) was a no-go area for a long time, but a decade of urban regeneration has borne fruit, bringing money back into the city centre and transforming it into

a vibrant, creative place. A five-minute stroll takes you past three museums, a handful of trendy bars, a theatre and a dance venue. It’s quiet in the daytime, but when I return on Saturday night the area is buzzing. It’s after 2am when I head back to the Peech that night, but there’s no sign of the fun stopping

at DJ bar Ko’spotong, and young clubbers are queuing out the door of the Bassline. When it comes to urban regeneration in the CBD, however, Braamfontein and Maboneng are the places to watch. I head to Braamfontein for

its Neighbourhoods Market, a funky collection of food stalls and local clothing and jewellery designers that sets up every Saturday in a multistorey car park. I wander around sipping a glass of South African chenin blanc and nibble on samosas, grilled halloumi, bratwurst, waffles and ice cream, buying a vintage playsuit while I’m at it. There’s a market with a similar feel at Maboneng on Sundays; it’s part of Arts on Main, a recent development that includes an airy gallery space, a couple of designer shops, a terrace bar and Canteen, a very nice brasserie whose tables spill out into a courtyard filled with olive trees. My lunch is luxuriously laid-back – a holiday from my holiday – and a post-prandial perusal of Main Street reveals several more eateries that go straight on to my ‘to try’ list - as well as The Living Room, a breezy terrace bar with great views over the urban landscape. But it’s not just the centre of Johannesburg that’s worth exploring. Not far from my hotel are two of Jozi’s most respected commercial art galleries. The Goodman and Everard Read are both open to the public and well worth a visit, whether or not you’re considering investing in the South African art market. And don’t miss Circa, the Everard Read’s newest space, an extraordinary optical illusion of a building

that hosts changing exhibitions of world class contemporary art. On the day of my gallery visits, I stop for a bite of lunch at Tasha’s, a buzzy eatery in the local area with an enormous menu that includes everything from liver on toast to fish and chips. My salad Niçoise is delicious but so generously proportioned that I am unable to finish it – not the first or the last time I am defeated by a plate of food this week. Further north still is Liliesleaf, where Nelson Mandela and the other grandees of the African National Congress were arrested in 1963 for plotting the overthrow of the apartheid regime. This interactive museum, whose exhibits include audio accounts of those involved, as well as the room where Mandela lived in disguise as a hired man prior to his arrest, is very sensitively curated and deeply moving. I visit the Apartheid Museum the next day to try to put this important episode in the country’s troubled history in its full context. The two experiences, though not exactly pleasant, are vital for anyone hoping to understand modern South Africa. Another South African essential is barbecue – called braai in Afrikaans, it’s a national passion and features on almost every menu I come across in Joburg. It’s a speciality at Moyo, a wonderfully quirky restaurant where a make-up artist paints

delicate designs on diners’ faces as they wait for their food. My friend and I opt to share two of the braai options on offer: her boerewors – or farmers’ sausages – were rich and meaty, as different from a British sausage as you could get, while my fillet steak was one of the best I’ve ever had. Most people who come to Johannesburg also head out on safari, but for those who can’t spare the time, there are opportunities to get up close and personal with animals on a day trip from the city. At Lion Park, which is somewhere between a reserve and a zoo, I am taken on a guided drive through enclosures containing herbivores, lions, cheetahs and wild dogs. It’s not quite the savannah, but our guide is very knowledgeable and the benefit of a place like this is that you’re guaranteed animal action: out on safari proper you can go hours with only wildebeest for company. Another thrilling perk is the chance to spend time in the lion cub enclosure. I won’t soon forget the all-too-brief minutes I spent with these magnificent animals as they dozed in the shade. Not far from here is the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO site, where evidence has been found of some of the earliest human and pre-human activity. I wander, awestruck, through the Sterkfontein Caves, gazing at ancient stalactites and stalagmites and an eerie

underground lake that lies silent and still in the darkness. Back in the city the following day I take a guided cycle tour through Soweto, once one of South Africa’s most infamous townships and now essentially a suburb of Joburg. Parts of it are still very poor and there are certainly areas it would be inadvisable for tourists to visit, but much of Soweto is now comfortably middle-class and it’s fascinating to have my expectations of such a place confounded. My final evening in Joburg begins with a ‘sundowner’ cocktail at recently opened boutique hotel 54 on Bath. I’ve truly embraced South Africa’s sundowner tradition this week, sampling old school colonial style at the Polo Bar at the Westcliff Hotel and contemporary elegance at the San Deck at the Sandton Sun Hotel. All three venues have fantastic views over the city, but 54 on Bath – with its garden terrace – is my favourite. As I watch the sun set and the full moon rise over this sprawling city, it strikes just how much more of Johannesburg there is still to discover.

The appetite for St John’s Wood houses in the £2M-£4M price brackets is as strong as I can ever remember. In the last two weeks we have been instrumental in the sale of over six houses at this price range with both rental investors and owner-occupiers keen to purchase what have in the

past proven to be fantastic investments. £2M is pretty much the entry-level price point for four bedroom houses in NW8 and with interest rates so low it makes commercial sense to invest in the property market. The top end of the market, £10M plus, remains less active with a narrower audience of buyers in the market; however, there are transactions being concluded on special houses where buyers are competing with one another. An example of this is the sale of a house Arlington Residential concluded at circa £18M off Avenue Road. Only six buyers saw the property, with four of those buyers submitting offers to buy the house.

IN THEIR OWN

WORDS OLIVER MCHUGH

Director: Oliver’s Residential Photography: Rebecca Noonan

T

he sales markets of Camden, Kentish Town and Hampstead are extremely buoyant, as I believe we are all aware; this is largely driven by the acute lack of appropriately priced high-calibre property available to buy in central London, which extends to our enclaves in North West London. The ever-worsening situation of supply and demand is keeping prices stable and on an upward trajectory for flats and houses in N7, N19, NW1, NW3 and NW5, as the demand from buyers continues to grow. Having been born and raised in Camden Town I have always had an affinity with the area, the people and the properties. From an early age the different styles of houses always fascinated me, so it was a more or less foregone conclusion that in some way, shape or form my future would be property orientated. Back in 1983 I set up and firmly established McHugh & Co Estate Agents and Auctioneers, a family-run business, which under my direction expanded and eventually had offices in Camden, Kentish Town, Highgate and Islington. In 1988 I decided to break away from the family business and set up Oliver’s in a prime location in Kentish Town on the corner of Prince of Wales Road and Kentish Town Road. Within weeks my new enterprise was buzzing and was firmly established as a force to be reckoned within the area. Over the years the company’s reputation grew as did my client database - along with vendors and landlords’ expectations for

my company to achieve the best prices in the shortest period of time. As the core business and standing grew, the company became known as Oliver’s Town, with most of the business being done in Kentish Town, Camden and Tufnell Park; this wasn’t enough though, and with the successful formula used to date, I opened a boutique-style office in Primrose Hill closely followed by an ultra-modern office in Hampstead; I hope for continued expansion further down the line. There have been enormous changes in all the areas we cover but most noticeably in Kentish Town. Many of the run down local pubs have reinvented themselves and are now places to go to and be seen, places the young and hip head for, rather than end up at. Art Galleries, Pizza East, the Kentishtowner (which extols the virtues of the area), everything from art, culture and food to community affairs are signs of the area’s new status as an up and coming ‘hot spot’. The Bartholomew and Inkerman conservation areas are as popular as ever, with prices now at absolute record highs, and properties again highly sought-after. The French School on Holmes Road has also had an impact. Venture to the recently renovated swimming baths on Grafton Road and you’ll hear the children yelling in French; the same with the High Street and the many parks.

he keyhole to this unique home is in the Lychgate entrance. The gates open to a small courtyard and ‘stable’ block (with hayloft/chauffeur flat above) and beyond that there is a third of an acre of gardens – yes, this really is in Muswell Hill! A peacefully secluded semi-detached house in an unadopted lane between Muswell Hill and Highgate Wood, within the architecturally celebrated Rookfield Garden Village. A delightful Conservation Area where the residents - not the council-look after the road and verges themselves.

The detached ‘stable’

Designed a hundred years ago as a relaxing escape from the pressures of London, this of course is really a detached garage with studio above, but because the Collins family (builders, architects and residents) of Muswell Hill embraced the Arts & Crafts movement at the turn of the century, the estate was modelled on a rural idyll.

7

7 The 1/3rd acre gardens A beautiful park of your own, which is landscaped on different levels. It includes a wonderland of mature plants, a fountain, ponds, secret areas and patios. There is a ‘bridge’ feature giving direct and level access to the studio above the garage from the garden.

The house

7

In the ubiquitous English country style, this is a wider version of the neighbouring homes. The charming, wisteria-clad main house includes four bedrooms and two reception rooms and there’s lots of potential. However, due to standing in a conservation area, additions will have to be sympathetic and are subject to consents.

The Laboratory affords a state-of-the-art gym and a superb pool. If you fancy yourself as a bit of an Andy Murray, Muswell Hill Tennis Club, located in a woodland clearing in the heart of Muswell Hill, may be for you. It boasts four floodlit all-weather courts.

From Colman Coyle gives her expert advice on all your legal property questions

I

am familiar with leaseholders having options to collectively buy the freehold of their block of flats but I own a leasehold house and I was wondering if I have a right to buy the freehold of my house?

Indeed you do. Subject to meeting certain

criteria, the Leasehold Reform Act 1967 (“the ’67 Act”) gives a leaseholder the right to buy the freehold or extend the lease of their house.

The main qualifying criteria are: 1. The house must reasonably be considered to be a house and meet certain requirements. For example, that it is vertically divisible from an adjoining property. 2. Your lease must be a long lease, which generally means it was originally granted for a term of more than 21 years. 3. At the time you apply for the acquisition of the freehold, you must have owned the house for the previous 2 years. In terms of the premium that is payable for the freehold, then a valuer is best placed to advise on this and the valuation process. In terms of costs, you are liable to meet certain aspects of the landlord’s reasonable legal and valuation costs.

80 Upper Street, Islington, N1 0NU

You can also consider approaching your Landlord to see if whether or not he/she is willing to negotiate and agree terms upon which you are both willing to buy and sell the freehold.
