Interiors Profile

Iam writing this letter the day after the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II. What a momentous 10 days it has been, from all the pomp and ceremony, to the astonishing outpouring of grief and stoicism from those who queued up for over 10 hours to catch a glimpse of Her Majesty lying in state. I have heard from several readers in Hertfordshire who did just that, describing it as one of the most powerful moments in their lives. In my 43 years, Queen Elizabeth II was all I knew. I never had any personal dealings with Her Majesty, but there are some connections – the amateur football club I am now chairman of saw its founder awarded an MBE from her two decades ago. The response to that from those in the club and outside was monumental, showing just what it meant to be honoured by Queen Elizabeth II. It also made me chuckle when he told me he chatted to Her Majesty about football tactics and she seemed to be interested in his thoughts on the beautiful game. It seemed Her Majesty had time for everyone.

The Queen had many different connections to Hertfordshire, far too many for me to list here, but it's clear she will never be forgotten. A new era awaits and it's one I am sure we will all look upon with interest. Rest in peace Your Majesty. God save the King.

Christmas with CHICKENSHED

Chickenshed is an inclusive theatre company based in Southgate, North London.

Having started life in a disused chicken barn in Barnet in 1974, they are known internationally for their inclusive creative process and will reach the grand age of 50 next year.

As well as being a professional theatre, Chickenshed also run performing arts courses, delivering three nationally accredited programmes at BTEC, Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) level. They are also a place where young people can come together to participate in their membership programme, or workshops run during the school holidays. Quite simply, it’s a place for those who want to share their vision of inclusion and contribute their diverse skills, interests, and experiences to create exciting theatre.

As autumn approaches, Chickenshed are busy rehearsing for their annual Christmas

Show. This year they are staging Jack!, a brand new musical loosely based on Jack and the Beanstalk, but with a very modern twist. Set on a decaying amusement arcade in a downtrodden seaside town, Jack is drawn into a video game that signals the beginning of an epic journey. Desperately trying to complete the many di erent levels, Jack travels on a quest to conquer fears, and ultimately find the future that he has longed for.

Chickenshed’s shows often have large casts and Jack! is no exception, with a cast of approximately 800, split into four rotas of 200. If that wasn’t enough, they also have two actors playing the role of Jack and, given that they are di erent genders, it has given them the opportunity to explore identity and labelling with their young cast.

A central part of Chickenshed’s creative process is enabling their young people to input their own ideas. Workshops held before the summer helped develop the story and the script, and the three computer game levels that Jack must complete were designed and created by the cast themselves. Even with a finished script the show continues to evolve, as the complex rehearsal schedule begins.

Chickenshed believes in the importance of each cast member seeing their value and contribution as an essential element of the show.

Music and choreography are central to this production, and Chickenshed have 25 young musicians playing everything from drums and bass, to French horns and oboes. The cast will be ‘strutting their stu ’ in this breathless theatrical spectacle. From Ghoulish Monsters to Pinball Wizards and the Land of the Giant, the show weaves an uplifting story of acceptance and di erence.

Jack! is just one of three shows playing at Chickenshed over the festive period.

Alongside their fun Christmas Tales, for children aged up to seven years – guaranteed to entertain younger audiences – they also have Christmas Planet Play, a magical world of sensory learning, wonder and exploration for babies and toddlers.

TELLER

Mark O’Sullivan once had a job cleaning a factory floor at a complex in Welwyn Garden City. Fast forward 24 years and the 45-year-old writer filmed in the same spot for his exclusive teen drama Tell Me Everything, which will be released on ITVX, a brand new and free streaming service.

The drama, set and filmed in Welwyn Garden City, where he was born and lived for more than 20 years, is his proudest career moment. “It's my first drama and it’s been a steep learning curve and a hard journey. Writing about my personal experiences has been di cult, but I am so proud of it,” he enthuses.

Tell Me Everything introduces us to 16-year-old Jonny Murphy (played by Eden. H Davies), who is trying his best to navigate through this world while su ering with undiagnosed depression and anxiety. “My new drama is loosely

based on my experience growing up as a teenager and some of the things I went through, but it’s set in the 2020s,” Mark explains. “The main character Jonny is very loosely based on me. I hadn’t thought about setting this in Welwyn Garden City, but while I was working on it, I suggested Welwyn to the production team, and they were keen to show it on screen.”

As I probe deeper, Mark is reluctant to give too much away, but reveals that parts of the show were filmed in spots where some of his own adolescent experiences took place. “We filmed a lot there, but not as much as I would have hoped. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it until we were there, but it’s been a strangely cathartic experience, you know, delving into my teenage years and thinking about growing up these days. So many things are identical, but today young people have an added layer of di culty with social media.

“I went through personal tragedies which I wanted to reflect on screen. Being a teenager is about figuring out who and

what you are and the kind of person you’re going to be. We all go through that thing of rejecting the place you’ve grown up in and Welwyn Garden City is sort of perfect in some ways and imperfect in other ways.

“I wanted to show what my friends and I went through. I also wanted to tell a story for most people growing up in smaller towns where you might not be all the things you would be if you grew up in a city. Showing a smaller community on screen was important.”

Picking the brains of teenagers – his 16-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter –has helped in creating the drama. “Talking to them and their friends and receiving their very honest opinions has been crucial to Tell Me Everything. I also contacted friends to help fill in a few gaps in my memory. Some sent embarrassing old photos, which wasn’t so great,” he laughs.

Growing up in Welwyn Garden City conjures up happy memories for Mark, who now lives just outside of Hitchin. “I loved the place, it felt like the best of both worlds

in terms of town and country. There is nowhere quite like it. The design and layout, and ethos behind it makes it unique. I remember great times – me and my mates would play in the lagoon in Mundells or Sherrardspark Wood. At primary school I got into drama, I was always into storytelling and acting took over. I performed and directed many plays at the Barn Theatre for more than 20 years with so many amazing people and I’m still involved. It’s where I discovered my love of theatre.”

After attending Monk’s Walk secondary school, Mark studied Performing Arts at Oaklands College in St Albans. “I planned to go to drama school, but sadly lost both my parents over the course of a few years and I ended up doing a lot of not-very good

jobs, my meandering career path I call it, and fell into teaching for five years.”

A self-taught filmmaker, Mark discovered this creative path after o ering to make a film for a charity in his late twenties. During this time, he met Miles Chapman, who is also from Welwyn Garden City, and they started writing and performing comedy together.

Their first comedy drama, Lee & Dean, was picked up by Channel 4 after they made a short film and released it on Twitter. “Miles is from Welwyn village and is older than me,” continues Mark, “we didn’t know each other in childhood. His wife is friends with my wife, and we have lots of mutual friends. We’d go on lots of family holidays together and I

remember one of the first holidays we had in Ireland, we got told o by respective wives because we were just trying to make each other laugh all the time! We have a similar sense of humour.” The comedy duo wrote and starred in two series of Lee & Dean and Mark went on to write material for Morgana Robinson’s The Agency

As the release date for Tell Me Everything approaches, Mark admits he is a little nervous. “Making a drama is a long, hard, and arduous process and now people will watch it. I am not worried about reactions from people I know. I hope they think it’s a good reflection of growing up in Welwyn. I am excited for people to see it.”

With a comedy series and now a drama under his belt, Mark speaks about the writing process with fondness. “I am happiest when I am writing a script. I love creating worlds and breathing life into people, with all their foibles and putting them into awkward situations. I am quite an awkward person, and I find myself in awkward situations constantly. I love finding humour in dark places. It’s been a total joy writing about Welwyn Garden City and putting it on screen.”

More projects lie on the horizon, so it seems this is just the beginning. “I’ve loved writing drama and I have some more comedy projects in the pipeline. I love collaborating with di erent people and seeing what happens. It’s amazing when your ideas merge with someone else’s. It’s exciting and unexpected.”

Get to know… AMELIA SORDELL

FOUNDER OF KLOWT AND WATFORD LOCAL

Q How do you look back on the womenswear brand you founded at 21?

A With a lot of gratitude. That business failed just under two years after I founded it. Year one was epic, year two I lost everything, and that boiled down to three things: I was too arrogant to ask for help, I didn’t vet my clients and I didn’t actually believe in the business enough to do what I needed to do to make it a long term success. I started that business because I wanted to work for myself, not because I wanted to run a clothing label. The lessons that failure taught me have been invaluable not just in my career, but now as a founder of another business. The lessons in negotiations, vetting, empathy, having difficult conversations, learning to love problems and finding solutions to them all. Hiring, firing, building relationships. Resilience. My business now, Klowt, succeeds because my first business failed.

Q What does Klowt offer?

A We’re a personal branding agency, so we brand people – not businesses. Which takes form in looking after individuals’ social media (creating content, posting and managing their accounts), pitching them into podcasts and speaking gigs, getting them relevant press, producing their own podcasts, and ghostwriting articles. Clients usually come to us because they want to use their personality to gain a competitive advantage in business. Whether that’s in generating more leads, or attracting more staff or generally boosting their own profile to enhance the profile of their company – or even the valuation of it. It’s essentially full social media, PR and talent management for senior leadership, entrepreneurs and founders. It’s humancentred marketing that gets actual results.

SHE LOVES A HOT CHOCOLATE AT DAISY'S IN THE PARK
20

Q How does it fit in with family life?

A To be honest I don’t think balance exists. When I’m with my kids, I’m 100% with them. I avoid using my phone, avoid taking calls, looking at content/posting on social media. I try and give them all my attention because I’m a single mum and I think it’s so important that they see me as mummy before anything. But work is also important. So, when I am at work, I am 100% there. It might sound selfish, but I don’t think about how they’re doing in school, or what they had for lunch because I know they’re safe, happy and having a great time at school. Balance doesn’t exist because it implies that we all must have this equal distribution of time, money, a ection and love between work and life – and that is simply not true. Life is like a battery – sometimes you need to use it up more at work, others more at home. But you always have to recharge it otherwise you’ll have zero juice to do anything.

Q How long have you lived in Watford for and what do you love about it?

A I moved to Watford three years ago almost to the day. To be honest, when

I first moved I didn’t love it – I didn’t have any friends here, my children didn’t go to school yet and I felt really out of my depth. Three years on, one of my favourite things to do is to take my kids to Cassiobury Park for an autumn stroll and hot chocolate at Daisy’s in the Park. I love the community, how together everyone feels. Coming from London – people don’t talk to one another or hang out with their neighbours. My neighbours recently moved to Milton Keynes and we still talk because of the bond we built over the years.

Q Can you pick out your three favourite places?

A I love Koala Kafe on Watford High Street. You can enjoy a hot co ee whilst the kids paint pottery – or even paint something yourself. I discovered it recently when trying to find some things to do with my kids on the weekend and the ladies who run it are so lovely, they couldn’t be more helpful and patient with my 3 and 5-year-old. We go to Cassiobury Park a LOT – we’ve seen rabbits, deer, the kids can ride their scooters around the track and I get a good

walk in. There is something really beautiful about being in nature and I think Cassiobury is just such a lovely park and area of Watford.

I can’t not mention The Loading Bay at Flourish – the best takeaway pizza

I’ve ever had. I’m a real purist and, with parents who live in Italy, a real pizza snob. The Loading Bay is authentic, delicious – chewy yet crispy. Their smoked garlic mayo for the crusts is absolutely delicious. Ten out ten, highly recommend.

Q What’s next for you Amelia?

A World domination – can I say that? I have such big plans for Klowt. I want to build something that will rival IMG, but for non-celebrities and sports people and make them famous for the thing they’re great at. We have a long way to go, but I feel like in the last two years I’ve built some solid foundations and the team I have around me are absolutely incredible. I’ve been very lucky to hire such awesome people to join me on this crazy start-up journey. What’s next is to enjoy that ride.

Party

PLANNER

Q You have just joined the team at Centurion Club – what attracted you to the role there?

A It was very serendipitous really. I was helping my daughter find a new job and when I was searching on her behalf, I came across the role at Centurion Club. It matched a previous role I was in perfectly.

I have always loved the combined aspect of sales and events – the commercial sales and creative event planning make this sort of role so satisfying. And I get to help create memories for people, which feels like a real privilege.

Q What is your background in hospitality?

A My journey started in hospitality behind the bar, when I was 19, in a very busy nightclub in Stevenage. Since then, I have always loved to be ‘in service’ to people, working in a hospitality setting.

If you were to talk to my family, they’d tell you that from an early age I loved a

good event! I used to organise my siblings (kind of against their will) and get them to put on dancing shows, create stalls and various ‘events’ for my mum.

Q What will your new role entail?

A I will look after all the enquiries we have for private events. We have some really unique space here at Centurion Club including two private dining rooms, a restaurant and bar, which can be hired exclusively, and a new events space that we are aiming to open next year. I’ll plan and deliver a range of events from board meetings to weddings and private parties.

Q Do you have an idea of the kind of events you’d like to introduce?

A The space we have is very versatile, so I will be aiming to accommodate a range of events from festive parties and celebrations, to corporate o -site meetings, private lunches, dinners, anniversaries, birthday parties and weddings.

Q What do you make of the dining o ering at Centurion Club?

A Incredible. I have seen first-hand the thought and care that goes into the sourcing of ingredients through to creating a menu and then serving the dishes. Calvin [Hill, the head chef] and his team are all so passionate about what they do, it’s really inspiring – and delicious!

Q Will there be anything new on the menus this autumn to get excited about?

A Calvin and I have been working closely

on developing the Christmas party dining packages together with the menus which, I have to say, are amazing. Our autumn a la carte menu launches at the end of September too – I think the Roasted Guinea Fowl and the Monkfish with Lentil Dahl Purée will be a big hit.

Q What private dining o ering do you have?

A We have two spaces that can be converted into one large room in the Clubhouse. They can accommodate up to 14 people as single rooms and 35 people when they are combined. They are beautiful rooms, full of light, each with their own terrace and views across the 18th Green. On occasion the restaurant can be hired privately.

Q Why is it special to hold an event here?

A It’s such a unique and beautifully designed place – everyone who arrives here is always surprised by the space and location. I know I was.

Q What kind of menu would you be able to enjoy?

A We o er a number of options for private dining and meetings and events, from working lunches through to bu ets and seasonal a la carte. If someone has a specific request or style of menu, we will work closely with the client to create something bespoke.

Q Do you also live close to Centurion Club?

A I actually live about 45 mins away, but it’s worth the drive! I do love St Albans though – it’s the place I tend to head to if I’m meeting with friends for lunch or dinner. There’s so much choice.

Fragrant Fish Stew

Pumpkin dumplings, coconut, cherry tomatoes & sugar snap peas

Serves 2

Total time:

INGREDIENTS

• Olive oil

minutes

• 2 x 125g chunky white fish fillets, skin on, scaled, pin-boned and from sustainable sources

• 1 lime

• 4 spring onions

• 250g ripe mixed-colour cherry tomatoes

• 2 heaped teaspoons Keralan or korma curry paste

• 2 heaped teaspoons coconut cream

• 450g pumpkin gnocchi

• 160g sugar snap peas

METHOD

1 Put ½ a tablespoon of olive oil in a 30cm non-stick frying pan on a medium-high heat, then place the fish skin side down to one side of the pan and finely grate over the lime zest. Trim the spring onions, chop the white parts into 2cm lengths and add to the pan with the tomatoes, halving any larger ones. As soon as the fish skin is golden and crispy, move the half-cooked fish to your board. Boil the kettle.

2 Stir the curry paste into the pan for 1 minute, then squeeze in half the lime juice and add the coconut cream and gnocchi. Pour in 300ml of boiling kettle water, bring back to the boil, then sprinkle in the sugar snaps. Sit the fish fillets on top, skin side up, cover the pan, and cook for 4 minutes. Finely slice the green spring onion tops and scatter over, then serve with lime wedges, for squeezing over.

Sausage Pappardelle

Fennel seeds, Chianti, garlic, tomato & parsley

Serves 1

Total time: 14 minutes

INGREDIENTS

• 125g fresh lasagne sheets

• 1 clove of garlic

• ½ a bunch of flat-leaf parsley

• 15g of olive oil

• 1 higher-welfare pork or veggie sausage

• 1 teaspoon fennel seeds

• Chianti or other Italian red wine

• 200ml passata

• Parmesan cheese, for grating

• Optional: extra virgin olive oil METHOD

1 Boil the kettle. Cut the lasagne sheets lengthways into 3cm strips

to make pappardelle. Peel and finely slice the garlic. Finely chop the top leafy half of the parsley, then the stalks, keeping them separate. Put a 28cm frying pan on a high heat. 2 Once hot, put a little drizzle of olive oil into the pan, then squeeze the sausagemeat out of the skin into the pan, breaking it up with your spoon (if using a veggie sausage, crumble or slice). Fry and stir for 2 minutes, then add the garlic, parsley stalks and fennel seeds. Once lightly golden, add a good splash of red wine, let it cook away, then add the passata and scatter the pasta into the pan. Carefully pour in enough boiling kettle water to just cover the pasta – about 300ml. Let it bubble away for 4 minutes, or until the pasta has absorbed most of the water and you’ve got a nice rich sauce, stirring regularly and loosening with an extra splash of water, if needed. Turn the heat o , stir in the parsley leaves, then season to perfection. Finish with a grating of Parmesan and a kiss of extra virgin olive oil, if you like.

Sweet Potato Chilli

Black beans, chipotle, cumin, coriander & feta

INGREDIENTS

• 6 sweet potatoes (250g each)

• Olive oil

• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

• 1 x 95g jar of chipotle chilli paste

• 500g fresh or frozen chopped mixed onion, carrot & celery

• ½ a bunch of coriander (15g)

• 3 x 400g tins of black beans

• 3 x 400g tins of quality plum tomatoes

• 60g feta cheese

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 180°C. Put a large deep casserole pan on a medium-high heat. Peel the sweet potatoes, placing them in the pan as you go. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and fry for 5 minutes, turning occasionally, until starting to get golden. Push to one side, add the cumin, let it sizzle, then spoon in the jar of chipotle chilli paste and add 2 jars’ worth of water. Tip in the chopped mixed veg, finely chop and add the coriander stalks, reserving the leaves, then bake for 1 hour.

2 Remove from the oven and add the beans, juice and all, then the tomatoes, scrunching them in through clean hands, along with 1 tin’s worth of water. Stir well, then roast for another hour, or until the sweet potatoes are tender. Season to perfection, then – if enjoying straight away – crumble over the feta and tear over the coriander leaves, to serve. Enjoy as is, batching up extra portions to stash in the fridge or freezer for future meals.

Behind the bar

Aperol on a London rooftop

Aperol was created in 1919 in Paduaby the Barbieri brothers, specialists in liqueur production since 1880. They had the revolutionary idea of creating the lightest of liqueurs, an aperitif with an alcohol content of only 11%. Aperol is an infusion of precious herbs and roots in a perfectly balanced combination, its unique bitter-sweet taste deriving from a secret recipe that has remained unchanged over the course of time. One of the secrets for success is freshness: liqueur manufacturing is completed in one day and the day after the trucks are ready for shipment. Aperol Spritz is one of the most appreciated aperitifs in Italy and is the best-selling branded cocktail in the UK, in addition to being enjoyed as the sixth most popular cocktail globally. The serve is made by mixing Aperol with Prosecco and a splash of soda in a wine glass full of ice and a slice of orange. Light, sparkling and refreshing, it’s the ideal drink for starting the evening and for any social occasion.

Q & A

True

STORIES

Jake Posner, a Radlettbased fashion designer and entrepreneur, has launched his sustainable label

No One True Anything in a bid to create change

Q Tell us how your business started…

A I always wanted to build something around sustainability, community, and my personal journey with dyslexia. In 2019 I had the idea of creating my own brand and started researching how to produce clothing. From the age of 14 I was interested in recycling so instead of keeping books in my school locker it was filled with Lucozade bottles – ready to recycle. We’ve been trading for a year, it’s been a bit of a journey, but it’s been fun.

Q How has dyslexia played a part in shaping the brand?

A No One True Anything doesn’t make sense and that’s the whole point. I want to encourage people to look at things in a di erent way. The slogan I guess sums that up: no one sense made non/sense.I break words down to syllables. The denim jacket I produce has handwritten block capitals on the fabric written by me. I left school at 16 with one GCSE in PE and was told that I needed to get a job. To think I have featured in publications like The Guardian and Forbes is crazy.

40 ABSOLUTELY magazines
JAKE POSNER

Q Who is the brand aimed at?

A It’s for anyone who understands the concept, and loves the designs. It’s gender fluid and that’s how I envisage the brand. I recently met Arsenal footballer Granit Xhaka – I saw him at a local restaurant so I drove home, grabbed some clothes and returned to the restaurant. I approached him and explained what the brand was about and he took the time to listen. To say he is wearing my clothes now is amazing. I have a meeting set up with Louis Tomlinson’s stylist, so fingers crossed he’ll take some clothes to wear on tour!

Q What was your background before this venture?

A I went to Aldenham School, but I struggled and teachers almost gave up on me. I left school at 16, walked down Radlett High Street and knocked on estate agents’ doors. I ended up on a Lettings Apprenticeship scheme earning £400 a month. I found it quite mundane. While I was doing the apprenticeship, I was DJing in nightclubs to earn extra money, but I was always interested in fashion; my pay checks were often spent on clothes.

Q Where do you go for inspiration in Hertfordshire?

A I live just o Radlett High Street. I love escaping to the woods and I take the dogs for a walk and get inspired by nature. It’s a good way to de-stress.

Q Have you experienced challenges while launching your business?

A Finance! I’ve used my own savings to launch the business. It’s di cult paying rent and bills while innovating the brand, but I am passionate and willing to do what it takes.

Q What has been your proudest moment to date?

A Featuring in Forbes was a big deal and Vogue endorsing my brand to be part of their ‘Bright Young Things’ edition. I recently became an ambassador for the British Dyslexia Association, which is a big opportunity to give something back.

Q The future looks bright. What is the ultimate dream?

A I have just completed a five-year plan for the business, and I am pitching for investment. I am hoping to create pop-up events to talk about neurodivergence and for people who do struggle at school to attend, to share their creativity and ideas.

I’d also love to work with world renowned retailers. I’m so determined to make this work; nothing is holding me back.

DON’T

Prostate cancer a ects one in eight men in the UK, so what are the symptoms and what should you do next? One private GP seeks to put your mind at rest

50 ABSOLUTELY magazines

The sad and premature death of Bill Turnbull, the veteran TV and radio broadcaster, in August has had tributes pouring in from current and former colleagues.

I never watched him on the BBC (far too early for me), but often listened to his excellent show on Classic FM, which I enjoyed immensely.

Many people will have known that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017 and was undergoing treatment for it. Following the revelation of his diagnosis, Prostate Cancer UK revealed that there was a 20% increase in NHS referrals for potential prostate cancer.

Despite this, prostate cancer still remains extremely common. One in eight men in the UK will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime and more than 395,000 are living with the disease. So what are the symptoms to look out for?

Di culty passing urine, which includes symptoms like:

• Trouble starting/stopping micturition

• Dribbling

• Incomplete emptying

• Increased frequency (day or night)

Of particular concern is blood in the urine or semen. This should warrant an urgent

appointment with your GP. If you leave it and ignore these early symptoms then it can metastasise (spread) elsewhere, often to bone, lymph nodes, lungs and liver.

Should you experience fevers/weight loss/sweats or unexplained aches and pains (particularly in the legs or back) then again see your GP urgently.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU SEE YOUR GP?

They’ll examine you – feel your tummy, check your genitals and feel your prostate (this requires a rectal examination). But better a finger up your bum than missing something that is eminently treatable in the early stages.

Once they’ve done this, they’ll check your blood for PSA (prostate specific antigen). Whilst not 100% accurate it remains a very useful tool.

If they find something on examination or in the blood, they’ll refer you to see a specialist (urologist) who will advise on further management.

The key is to be proactive about your health. Men are traditionally reluctant to talk about any aspects of their health – physical or mental. We need to remove the stigma surrounding health and wellbeing and encourage men to open up. Better you see someone and su er some mild embarrassment than leave a significant medical problem too late.

The best way to do this is to book a health screening (well man) check with a doctor who has the time to sit and listen carefully to you in a non-judgmental fashion and without rushing you.

Someone who will talk honestly with you and tailor treatment that is medically sound, but also works around you.

I o er well man (and well woman) screening appointments (visit drsuhailhussain.com/ private-gp-services/health-screening-

well-man-well-woman) that start from as little as £395. We’ll have time to sit together (90 minutes) and discuss any/ everything you would like to about your health. Even if you’re well, it is beneficial to get an annual screen to optimise your health. According to the World Health Organisation: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence if disease or infirmity.”

I also work with a number of other specialists – nutritional therapists, physios, Pilates instructors, acupuncturists and more, and can discuss with you who is most appropriate for you, based on your needs.

Additionally, I have an extensive network of secondary care consultants to whom I can refer if necessary. Finally, I also see patients on an as required basis – in clinic, at home or via telephone/video.

THE BIG QUESTION

milestone in answering the fundamental question ‘when to start a family?’.

At IVF London, they o er a Fertility Wellness Check, where within a few hours, you have a pelvic scan, a blood test (AMH), Semen Analysis and time with a consultant to understand where you place on the fertility scale and if there are any factors that need addressing.

Egg Freezing is a process that allows women the freedom of choosing the time at which they wish to become mothers. A woman can freeze her eggs and at a later time of her choosing decide to use them.

Artificial Intelligence is a new and exciting avenue available at IVF London that allows their embryologists to choose the best embryos for transfer. Another avenue for screening is (PGD) Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis which allows them to screen for some of the genetic hereditary ailments.

The experts at IVF London ensure the journey to parenthood is informed, well thought out and comfortable. They are an end-to-end clinic, with state-of-the-art facilities, where patients get to know the team and have continuity of care.

How do we know when it is the right time to try for a baby? This fundamental question often plagues many of us. Clinic Director and Embryologist of IVF London, Mr Alpesh Doshi with 30 years under his belt, says: “It’s a huge dilemma for women who want to focus on their career or education.

Often women face the conundrum between taking a break in their career/ education to pursue their familial plans.”

The stark truth of a women’s reproductive health is set in stone in that

the women’s reproductive health starts to decline after the age of 35 and the decline only accelerates as she nears 40. This can sometimes make IVF the only option with reduced chances for patients who have left it later in life to embark on their fertility journey. The buck doesn’t stop with women; men equally face challenges brought on by lifestyle choices, poor habits inculcated by a demanding work life and stress that directly impact a man’s fertility.

There are measures in place to help understand and assess reproductive health. A little investment of time allows one to gauge their reproductive health and helps give a realistic

Shades of AUTUMN

Hair looking a little lifeless postsummer? The founder of Ciente writes about what can be done

Autumn is one of our favourite seasons at Ciente hair health spa: we love the challenge of restoring colour faded hair, damaged by summer sun, pool, and sea water. This is the perfect time to refresh hair, and the opportunity to create something quite di erent, maybe rich warmer tones and softening those ashy blondes, creating more warmth to our skin tones as we lose our sun kissed tanned looks.

You could possibly notice an increase in hair shedding; just as leaves fall from the trees, hair can also enter into a resting phase which can cause an increase in hair fall, known as a telogen e uvium (shedding of hair in a resting phase).

However, do not fear, providing you have no underlying health issues, or embarked on a yo yo diet lifestyle, your hair growth cycle will be reproducing new hair growth within the dermis (the deep layers under the skin surface). Remember we are what we eat. Hair is a complex chain of amino acids, hence it requires a protein diet. Seek professional guidance if you are concerned about nutritional deficiencies.

Some typical questions we receive from our clients regarding hair health are:

Q Can I colour my hair if it is shedding?

A Providing the shedding is not from a scarring scalp issue and you have sought professional advice and there are no other unrelated issues – it is essential to carry out a skin and incompatibility test prior to any chemical service – then it is perfectly safe to have your hair coloured professionally.

Q My hair has lost its shine since my holiday. Can I improve this?

A UV rays a ect the hair condition, it can dehydrate the hair cuticle (outside layer of the hair structure). When the cuticle is missing the hair absorbs daylight as opposed to reflecting daylight, creating dull lifeless appearance. An intensive treatment plan can assist in improving the condition of your hair.

Q My hair colour did not take after my hairdresser coloured my hair on my return from holidays…

A Pre-treatments are an important part of the colour service, especially following on from a holiday where your hair has been exposed to UV sun rays and your hair is dehydrated. Hair is like an artist canvas. We need to prepare our canvas before applying the paints to ensure even coverage and a true colour match.

Q I have blonde hair and since the summer I have noticed green tones. Can I remove these tones?

A Chlorinated swimming pools can create khaki tones in blonde hair because there is no warm undertones to neutralise the chemical reaction that the chlorine creates. Chlorine is a bleach, so if you can imagine how many times you have subjected your hair to the bleach in the water, this will cause hair to break down and lose the warmer colour molecules within the hair structure, hence the hair appearing kaki, which is a very cool colour.

Using colour conditioners with warm tones will help. Again, hair treatment is a must prior to using any colour, hair that has been exposed to this environment will need to be treated first.

Designed with LOVE

The Bushey-based founder of Teer & Co reflects on his childhood inspirations, celebrating craftsmanship and why he seeks to shine the spotlight on talented designer-makers

Iloved art, especially drawing caricatures and still life. My grandad was a talented landscapes painter and my parents enjoyed craft-based and furnituremaking hobbies. Creativity ran in my family, we all took great pride in our creations and, for me, art and design naturally became my strong subjects at school.

My appreciation of beautifully designed and skilfully handcrafted wood furnishings grew, perhaps subconsciously, from quite an early age. An early recollection was seeing my father’s meticulous ways of working, both professionally and around the house, and following his journey designing and handcrafting an oak dining table and chairs for our family in his spare time. Everyone anticipated him completing his masterpiece for what seemed like a lifetime! It was given to me when I left home and I eventually passed it on to friends of my parents who expressed interest in refurbishing and styling the upholstery to their taste.

Having studied art and design, my career began in the mid 80s in product development with two leading brands in

the toy industry. I learnt the end-to-end process of sourcing ideas from inventors, working with packaging and product designers, testing, specification and pricing, development into prototyping for launch at trade shows and ultimately manufacturing.

My career developing products in the toy industry ran into the early 90s, following which I worked for some large and small design agencies in account management and business development roles and then set up and ran my own design business in 1999. Having experienced the challenges of setting up, running and exiting my own business in 2002, I developed a rewarding career as a consultant and mentor to aspiring design firms, which remains a part of my career 20 years on.

Consciously, I’ve spent my 38-year career to date working with many talented designers from around the world. Through my experiences since 2002, advising and mentoring owner-founders and leaders of 40+ design firms in varying disciplines, I gravitated towards working more so with interior and furniture designers. By immersing myself in their working lives as an integral part of my work with them, I developed a keen understanding of and appreciation for great design and refined traditional workmanship. These experiences have informed and led to my perfect role with Teer & Co – curating a furniture collection and representing some of the finest emerging and established designer-makers of timber and soft furnishings. My mother’s values have certainly influenced and shaped my character and informed my career path – harnessing my experience to support designers that welcome guidance or representation.

Between 2007 and 2015 I sadly lost both my parents and sister. In 2016, with renewed focus, I felt the time was right to set up Teer & Co, but found my consultancy and mentoring work didn’t allow me sufficient time to get right behind this new venture. So reluctantly in 2017 I put Teer & Co on the back burner.

My interest in fine furniture, desire to represent designermakers and celebrate traditional craftsmanship were already

known and formed. I just needed to find the right time to be able to focus on developing the business. The Covid lockdown in 2020 turned off my regular work for a time and I embraced the opportunity to focus my time and attention on shaping Teer & Co.

Teer & Co was created for those who share our love of wood, great design, skilfully handcrafted workmanship and creating distinctive, timeless and desirable furnishings that endure. Through a growing network of some of the finest emerging and established designer-makers, we collaborate with interior designers, architects, developers, private and corporate clients to help create unique homes and commercial spaces of the highest quality.

From the outset, I wanted to offer clients choice in how they order from and work with us. So we offer; standard made-to-order items through our collection, we invite customisation of some standard items if an alternative size, material or finish is preferred, and we facilitate the creation of a bespoke piece of free standing furniture or object to help realise the unique individual ideas of private and trade clients.

Sustainability, craft and making are increasingly important aspects of our society, environment, culture and economy. Supporting the whole movement towards traditional craft and making, authenticity, the wellbeing associated with bringing nature into the environments we inhabit, sustainability and people that appreciate and want to own objects with genuine provenance and soul has my interest, and feels like a meaningful worthwhile pursuit in this latter stage of my career.

What Teer & Co offers the market is a very personal representation of items I appreciate and skills I admire in others. Additionally, the business brings together and makes best use of not just my own skills of interpretation, makingmanagement and understanding of great customer service, but my experiences and learnings throughout my career.

Operationally, our drop shipping business model requires that designer-makers are based in the UK, they have their own workshop and can design and make to order and arrange shipping direct to the customer in a professional, reliable, sustainable, responsive and collaborative relationship with us. Aesthetically, I look for designer-makers that offer something distinctive, of a quality and individuality that brings a new dimension, making style, story or personality to Teer & Co that complements the existing designer-makers and collection.

By monitoring emerging trends and searching the market for talent, Teer & Co brings into view a unique collection of sometimes ‘limited visibility’ handcrafted furnishings curated to inspire customers that share our love of great design and refined workmanship.

Inspiring discerning customers is the challenge that drives the search for new collection pieces. Identifying original, refined and maybe unseen elegant design features, tactile surfaces, new proportions, timber species, finishes and overall aesthetics are key qualities and considerations that inform whether a new item or range is included or developed for the collection.

The collection has evolved from just timber to include soft furnishings and a widening pool of trusted designer-

makers to increase capacity and broaden the range of making styles we offer private and trade clients.

The collection includes rarely seen one-off bespoke commissioned pieces made available to order, and comprises four small ranges of furniture for customers that wish to coordinate several pieces for a given project to achieve a cohesive design theme across different spaces. Additional pieces can be custom-designed to match or complement a particular range if not offered as a standard item in the collection.

In late January 2022 we were approached by a private client to discuss a custom-designed feature wall installation of the very popular luxurious Decorative Panelling we offer in the substantial natural light-filled hallway of their Bedfordshire home.

This unique feature wall took six months from the first conversations to completion of the installation in early July 2022; however, these installations can be delivered in a far shorter timeframe. The project was a truly collaborative effort that Teer & Co co-ordinated between the client and our partners in Poland, and our largest and most challenging installation to date.

Everything I’ve learnt about working with designers, client service, process, project management and being proactive is poured into Teer & Co to the betterment of how custom and bespoke projects run. And how we look out for both our designer-makers and private or trade clients by taking the middle ground and steering the creation of elegant distinctive furnishings.

Alongside sourcing new furnishings for the collection, and discovering fresh designer-makers to invite into the fold, I have aspirations to develop an ‘own-brand’ interior furnishing line for launch in 2023. Current ideas forming are being researched and will require the involvement of a designer-maker to collaborate with us as a joint venture.

From September 2022, alongside our talented designermakers, we are featuring the work of local contemporary British artists as a fresh new art offering from Teer & Co. First up is Paul Hillary, a Hertfordshire-based abstract and semi-abstract artist influenced by atmospheres in nature as well as everyday textures in urban and rural environments. The plan is to start offering for sale through the collection a small selection of standard artworks, and to welcome bespoke commission enquiries to support those looking for a more individual personal piece for themselves, or as a gift.

Which rather nicely brings us full circle back to my love of art from an early age. Maybe the obvious challenge here is to sharpen my own pencils and get to work on some creations of my own to feature and offer through the c ollection on Teer & Co!

LIFE

Absolutely Hertfordshire visits a wonderful home in a private setting boasting far-reaching views

Set in an idyllic spot nestled in beautiful rolling countryside, this St Albans property is approached along a private driveway set behind tall iron gates. With delightful woodland walks, manicured lawns and fabulous views, the property enjoys a high degree of privacy. Designed with a gentle nod to the Arts & Crafts style with exquisite detailing, this is a handsome home with accommodation approaching 9,000 sq ft including the superb leisure complex.

Entering, it is an impressive and welcoming home featuring flexible accommodation arranged over two floors. Double doors open into a lengthy and bright entrance hall, which spans the front of the building leading to the two wings of the house and makes for a fine warm welcome for guests and family. Overlooking a pretty courtyard there is a most impressive vaulted grand hall, which measures over 34 feet and provides a stunning backdrop for elegant entertaining on a majestic scale. An inner hallway opens onto a bright and

airy drawing room with a fabulous feature fireplace; an ideal venue for cosy winter gatherings.

Set quietly away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house is a generous sized gentleman’s club style study with a wall of fitted library shelves and tall windows providing a bright and cheery working environment. There is a charming country kitchen with a comprehensive range of cabinets arranged around an island unit. Adjacent to this, the breakfast room has a four oven Aga which is complemented by independent cooking facilities for the summertime in the kitchen. Leading from the kitchen is one of the two utility rooms, which features a useful walk-in larder. Easy stepped access leads down to the cellar, which has ample storage for the largest of wine collections.

The games room, which is currently used as a snooker room, is a well-proportioned room that could be put to alternative uses to suit one’s own needs. With doors leading into the grand hall this adds to the superb entertaining space this home has to offer.

At the rear of the property is a ground floor bedroom suite with sitting area and dressing room with separate bathroom. This could be used for a privately situated guest suite or simply a teenager’s den.

On the first floor there are four-bedroom suites with an additional guest bedroom with a range of fitted cupboards. The principal bedroom suite is an indulgent space with windows on three sides and has the benefit of two separate en-suites, each with their own dressing areas. There is a further bedroom suite with its own sitting room and bathroom, which has independent access from the breakfast room via a spiral staircase. Overlooking the grand hall from an internal balcony is another suite that has a dressing room and vaulted

ceiling with roof lights making for a bright and airy haven.

The leisure complex is a superbly appointed space that consists of an indoor heated pool, which has two sets of steps and a Jacuzzi, steam room/shower and a separate sauna. French doors lead out to the gardens making this an ideal setting for a summer party.

The landscaped gardens and grounds are a striking feature to the property and include a small mature woodland, providing a perfect play area for a game of hide and seek. There are rolling lawns and several seating areas including a substantial sheltered gated courtyard, which is bordered by the grand hall. With a pair of verandas this makes for a perfect place to host casual suppers and summer lunches.

There is a fenced paddock set to the south of the gardens with a useful gated access onto Pickford Road, ideal for bringing in agricultural machinery and horse boxes. Set slightly further afield meadowland meanders from the gardens towards the east down to a lightly wooded copse in a shallow valley.

Gilly Tilden’s McCarthy Stone home reflects her diverse influences and interests. “My style is an eclectic mix of traditional, antique and modern – like my fashion sense. I’d describe my space as warm, comfortable and happy. When people see it, they instantly say, ‘oh yes this is very Gilly!’”

“I’VE BROUGHT THE SPANISH SUNSHINE WITH ME”

Ann Carroll’s cheery retirement apartment is as colourful as her character. After living in Spain for 15 years, fun-loving Ann was keen to bring the sunshine to her new home, adding bright shades and daring art. “Life’s just better in colour!” she exclaims.

“I’VE GOT A DIFFERENT COLOUR IN EVERY ROOM”

Graphic designer Lindsay Bradshaw’s apartment is constantly evolving. Its exuberant mix of unusual patterns, colours, and bold prints reflects his creativity. “Of course, it’s not to everyone’s taste, I admit,” he says with a chuckle. “But I’ve got a young outlook on life and I just thought ‘why not?’ The best thing you can do is to stick to neutrals first, then add pops of colour once you’ve lived in it for a while.”

McCarthy Stone retirement developments are found in prized locations close to local amenities and transport links. From sociable shared spaces to flexible domestic and care support, they provide an assortment of thoughtful facilities and services to make life easier and more enjoyable. With properties by the coast, in the countryside or at lively cultural hotpots, there’s a McCarthy Stone home for every retirement dream.

If you think that all retirement living properties are the same, think again. McCarthy Stone offers stunning homes for every preference, from popular apartments to brilliant bungalows. And while all of their properties are designed to be light, spacious, energyefficient and low maintenance, the fresh white walls provide the perfect blank canvas to create a unique, personal haven.

TURN UP THE HEAT

S

toves are a great way of adding a cosy focal point to living spaces, and the right design can lift a room scheme – especially as you can choose from bold colours, and streamlined modern or elegant traditional models. There's a stove to suit just about any space and you don't even need a fireplace for many designs, just a suitable outside wall or roof space to accommodate the flue system.

But there's another good reason to consider investing in a new stove this autumn – bills. Unless you're planning an extended trip to the sun, staying warm this winter is a very real concern. It's something the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) is certainly hot on, also reminding us of the benefits of reducing reliance on central heating.

Stoves are never a recommended alternative to central heating, but an efficient, modern design will ramp up the cosiness and potentially offer a way of saving on other energy costs. This is something that SIA is emphasising, pointing to recent research about the "zonal heating" approach. This suggests that using a wood-burning stove while turning down your gas central heating to 18°C for three hours five times a week could save almost 8.5% on average

heating bills – potentially more if fuel bills continue to rise. Not only that, but you have the reassurance of staying cosy during a power cut (outages do happen) bringing peace of mind that can justify the outlay.

If you're warming to the idea of snuggling around the fire while saving money, here are five tips for choosing and running a stove.

1. GO ECO-FRIENDLY AND EFFICIENT

If you're sitting in front of an open fire or running an older stove (10 years plus) it's almost certainly worth considering an upgrade to an Ecodesign-compliant model (for example clearSkies certified). The latest compliant stoves generate 80% fewer emissions than the older stoves, and 90% less than an open fire.

2. CHECK LOCAL REGULATIONS

If you're in a Smoke Control Area, as most of London and many surrounding areas are, you'll need to choose a stove that is Defra exempt. The penalties for breaching Smoke Control regulations can be hefty – so upgrading makes financial as well as ecological sense. Get advice from your stove retailer but, as a guide, look for clearSkies Level 3 and above stoves.

3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE

While the idea of a toasty room can be enticing, overheating (or underheating) will be a serious problem if you buy the wrong size. This is why it's important to

get a proper survey of the room you'll be heating. An authorised stove dealer and installer (HETAC or OFTEC registered) can advise on the right wattage, as well as undertaking a survey to ensure your chimney or other flue point is safely prepared. Also, look for a stove with responsive controls – you want a design you can adjust quickly and easily.

4. BURN THE RIGHT FUEL

The right fuel is essential for safe and efficient stove operation. If you buy logs from a local dealer, they should be at or below 20% moisture content – this is for safety as well as smoke control compliance. If you buy logs from a variety of sources, look for the 'Ready to Burn' logo. Never burn wood that has been chemically treated or use the stove to incinerate paper and other rubbish. Also ensure you store logs safely – avoid stacking them too close to the heat of the fire.

5. SERVICE YOUR STOVE

Your stove chimney should be swept at least once a year by a registered chimney sweep (visit the Federation of Chimney Sweeps' page for local members). This is the best way to ensure safe and efficient running – and many insurers also insist chimneys are swept regularly. Sweeps are also a wonderful source of practical expertise on all things fireside.

CODE BREAKER

Dyslexia Awareness Week, from 3-9 October, is an important reminder of issues some children face – and why the outlook is in no way negative

Did you know that about 10% of the UK population are dyslexic? You may, indeed, be dyslexic yourself or have a child who has dyslexic tendencies.

Dyslexia, derived from Greek, literally means “di culty with words” but, with specific teaching, strategies can help overcome these di culties. We are all di erent, dyslexic or not, but some of the positives of being dyslexic can include excellence in spatial awareness, problem solving, inventing and creativity, to name but a few.

Within our teaching centre, we house Laidlaw Hall, our specialist centre for the teaching of children and young people with dyslexia. We are a registered body with CReSTeD (Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils), the kitemark of excellence in this area of teaching. We are proud and humbled to work with schools, children and young people for whom dyslexia is part of their lives; we are not dismissive of how this can a ect each student, or how it can dent confidence, but we celebrate the hard work, tenacity and also the talents that can all

be part of having dyslexia as part of your profile. We have taught elite tennis players who have exceptional spatial awareness and have known students who have become architects, fashion designers and surgeons. There are many preconceived ideas about dyslexia. Indeed, even now in some quarters, dyslexia is dismissed as something that does not exist. So here is some myth busting…

• Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence. There are plenty of dyslexic students who gain excellent GCSEs, A-levels and degrees, including those from Oxbridge.

• If your young child is finding it di cult to grasp the basics of reading and spelling, it does not mean that they are dyslexic. In fact, most educational psychologists do not want to make a formal diagnosis of dyslexia until a child is at least seven years of age. There are, of course, exceptions. If you have a family history of dyslexia, then this may be diagnosed earlier.

• It is not true that nothing can be done about dyslexia. Professional, targeted intervention can work wonders and, in turn, build self-esteem and a more positive approach to learning.

TOM CRUISE HAS NOT LET DYSLEXIA HOLD HIM BACK

If you have a child who is struggling and you are concerned, do seek specialist teaching support. We try to explain it to the children as teaching them a di erent way of “cracking the code”.

Dyslexia Awareness Week is in October. The theme this year is ‘breaking through barriers’ and will allow us all to reflect on the barriers that those living with dyslexia often face. Let’s celebrate how the world needs us all to think in

di erent ways, with di erent strengths (and weaknesses). Let’s help each child to find their individual strengths and support them in their challenges.

And let’s hold on to the fact that dyslexia can come with unexpected bonuses. Just look at the work of designer Paul Smith, or enjoy Jamie Oliver’s culinary talents or the dramatic work of Keira Knightley and Tom Cruise. Thank you all for your wonderful creative brains.

Building BLOCKS

The Academic Director of St Margaret’s School looks at LEGO and STEM innovation in schools

From LEGO play to building kit cars, STEM is evolving in schools today and the future is both exciting and challenging. Of the 788,125 A-level grades students received this summer, STEM subjects enjoyed an extraordinary dominance at the top of the charts for A-level uptake.

Yet in a fast-moving technological landscape, employers are increasingly looking for students who can approach STEM as more than simply an exercise in repeating ‘parrot-fashion’ what they learned for the exam. The very term

STEM suggests something that is more than the sum of its parts – an appreciation of how pupils can apply their learning to the real world, with all of the complexity that real world problem solving requires.

LEGO AND KIT CARS

Take LEGO as an example – arguably nothing embodies real world problem solving better than LEGO. LEGO enables pupils to design, think, solve and be creative in a group challenge or team setting, reflecting the real world of work. LEGO allows students to model a real-world system and set of controls, giving them the chance to understand and visualise the connection

between a theoretical concept and its practical application. This is perhaps why it is becoming so popular in schools today. Likewise, building anything requires students to process a design which is presented to them and to apply this logically to the engineering and construction of a product. A car is a perfect example of this because it is subject to the laws of physics, the economics of mathematics, it must suit the ergonomics of biology, it must be engineered to last and requires technological skill and understanding to come together. This is perhaps why more and more schools are incorporating the building of kit cars into their STEM o ering. Most importantly, for students to work on a kit car successfully, it requires them to design, work as a team, model, communicate, build, problem solve and test products and solutions – building the vital inter-personal and collaborative skills which the STEM industry is crying out for.

Another area being embraced more and more by schools is robotics. In our rapidly evolvingtechnological world where products and systems are increasingly automated and less reliant on humans to carry out

EDUCATION • TALKING HEAD SIMON WINCHESTER

tasks that we are simply not built to do, humans are relying on robotics to optimise manufacturing processes and services. Pupils need to be aware of the role robotics plays in society today and to start thinking about what it can do for us in the future. Students clearly recognise the importance of this area, with A-level uptake in Computing rising by 17% this year, clearly one of the fastest growing and exciting areas of STEM.

BREAKING DOWN WALLS BETWEEN SUBJECTS

At my school we really believe in driving pupils’ academic interests through their cocurricular pursuits. This year some of our most popular extra-curricular activities have been a group working with 3D printers and a group working on restoring old 2-stroke scooters. Our STEM fair gave pupils the opportunity to conduct project-based group work looking at real world applications of STEM, with presentations ranging from hydrogen-powered aircraft, to a wind tunnel modelling the downforce generated by the front wing of a formula one car.

Design and Technology is an important subject which allows so many STEM concepts to come to life in a practical way – our brand new Design Centre features a traditional resistant materials workshop

alongside a CAD/CAM suite. Our DT Department are working closely with our Art Department, where our Artist-inResidence is a photoshop and digital design specialist, allowing pupils to take part in a series of o -timetable days designed to encourage creativity within digital design.

STEM is really key to challenging pupils in breaking down the walls between di erent subjects. Our Heads of DT and Physics came together recently to lead pupils in a specialist workshop series at the end of the summer term, encouraging pupils to make connections between di erent subjects and encouraging our sta to collaborate in ways they might not overwise do.

AN APPETITE FOR CHALLENGE

As STEM continues to evolve, we should expect to see schools pushing the boundaries for future STEM-related activities. Each generation arriving in secondary schools will do so with a more advanced digital skillset,

having grown up in such a rapidly changing technological landscape. The appetite for challenge among pupils in this arena is exciting and gives the pupils themselves real scope to challenge the boundaries of STEM.

The challenge is for schools and examination boards to provide pupils with opportunities which model real world innovation, giving them the opportunity to think outside of the traditional ‘boxes’, i.e. why should programming a robot sit in the Computer Science syllabus; why not DT? Or Physics? Pupils cope with the cognitive load of their learning by putting their knowledge and skills into these helpful buckets, but there is extraordinary scope for pupils to think, collaborate, design and explore so much more e ectively if they can be given the opportunity to shake o some of these labels and appreciate the complexity of real-world systems.

Making a SPLASH

On 31 August, Adam Peaty and his race clinic visited Berkhamsted School to teach 100 young swimmers how to race. As well as this, 12 coaches from three local swimming clubs and Berkhamsted School received first-hand training from the former Olympic champion’s skilled team.

The day began with an introduction in the Centenary Theatre, where Adam greeted the 100 swimmers and their families to give an overview of the day’s activities. From there, the children took part in three stations; the Swim Station, Gym Station and Racing Edge Station.

At the Swim Station, Adam led a session on “free swimming”, focusing solely on the stroke and how technique plays a major part in your success. Meanwhile, Ed Baxter, cofounder of the AP Race Clinic, led the second part of the station, looking at maximising distance and power in every stroke.

Adam’s gym coach of four years led the Gym Station, giving the swimmers an insight into swimming specific gym work. This was complemented by the Racing Edge Station, which allowed the swimmers to learn how to master their minds whilst racing.

The parents of the children were also able to get involved too. The Parent Support Station allowed them to ask questions on how to create the best experience for their children as they develop as swimmers.

It will not only be the 100 swimmers there on the day who will benefit from the expertise and passion of Adam and his race clinic team. Thanks to the new coaching skills that the 12 coaches in attendance –

from Berkhamsted, Tring and Hemel swim clubs and Berkhamsted School – gained during the day, many other aspiring young swimmers will be able to experience elements of the way that Adam trains.

The day finished with a Q&A and a chance for photographs and signing with Adam. At the close of the event, Adam commented: “From the whole team and I, we just wanted to say a massive thank you for attending the AP Race Clinic today. Your energy was electric, I hope you take the same energy into the 2022/2023 season just as I am!”

Wizard PLAY

A once fictional game is finding a loyal following among students. We catch up with QuidditchUK to find out the state of play

Quidditch – that game in Harry Potter that required wizard powers and real broomsticks – has, by some strange magic, become a sport. Not only that, but it's played in some 40 countries and with a set of rules and grassroots approach that make it fast-paced, fun and with a great sense of community. In fact, if you are looking for a case study that ticks boxes for 21stcentury sporting ideals around inclusivity, quidditch would be a good place to start.

It emerged when a couple of Vermont college students set out to take the rules from the Harry Potter books and codify them to create a game Muggles could play. This was back in 2005, and since then it has developed structures, nationally and internationally. QuidditchUK (QUK) started out playing to those Vermont rules, but it is now a full member of the International Quidditch Association. Other active nations include Canada, Chile, Australia, Argentina, Turkey and several European countries. There are emerging and associate members spanning the globe, from Japan and Pakistan to Uganda and Vietnam.

As a full member, QUK participates in rule making and changing – ensuring the game works as it continues to grow.

Beck Throup, QUK Media Director, began playing the sport while she was at University of Bristol and believes the secret of its growth is the community spirit involved. "It's a well-loved sport – a small community of a few hundred players in the UK, but it's such a tight community," she says. It may be diminutive but it's gathering momentum and QUK recently hosted its national championships involving a community league for the first time, alongside the university league.

96 ABSOLUTELY magazines

When you consider that a full team complement is 21 players (due to the number of substitutions), you get the sense of what an inclusive activity this can be. Also, and this is vital, it's mixed sex and with scope for every body type. "There's no stereotypical quidditch player. I'm five foot two and then you've got six-foot rugby lads – you've got so many di erent ways of playing the game and so many tactics involved that it always ends up fairly evenly matched. The only thing that tends to a ect the outcome is if one team doesn't have its full roster of 21 players."

Beck was drawn in, like a lot of people, by the idea of playing a game she'd read about. "I did love the Harry Potter books and I met the captain of the quidditch team at a party and I promised I'd come to training – and about a year later I showed up!" She enjoys the fact that this is a game of equals. "That's important to us to a degree where it's actually in the international rule book. We have a Gender Rule, where you can only have four people

of any one gender on the pitch at any one time. Referees and o cials are made aware of all the players on each team's gender for when they are subbing on and o ." This ensures a balance of weight and strength or, as Beck puts it: "You don't have a team of seven rugby lads on the pitch at any time."

QUK is building a youth outreach programme to work with younger players – including through schools who want to organise games or taster sessions. There are also, curiously, a fair few enquiries from stag and hen parties who want something di erent. "There's a lot of goodwill," says Beck. "Even when people retire from play a lot of them stick around in the community and volunteer, as well as coming to tournaments. These volunteers are essential to running the sport."

Watch a game in play, and you can see why people stick around – there's a lot happening on the pitch. "It's essentially a cross between rugby, dodgeball and wrestling," says Beck. "It's great fun to watch." There's enough complexity in quidditch to keep those who love rules in clover, while those who don't will still find it thrilling, if mystifying.

With seven players on each team in play at any time, the aim is to outscore opponents by getting the qua e (a volleyball) through

one of three opposition hoops. Each team defends their own hoops with tackles and bludgers (dodgeballs). The game ends when the winning team has a legal catch on the snitch (a neutral player, who enters play 15 minutes in wearing what is e ectively a tennis ball in a sock attached to the back of their shorts) or when one team has a 30-point lead. You can understand why students love it: fast, fun and a bit wacky – you play while holding what is e ectively a broom handle between your legs in homage to the fictional game.

While quidditch is, at 17 years of age, a newcomer, it's looking ahead. One current discussion centres on whether the name should be changed. "As we're moving away from 'oh there's that sport in the Harry Potter books', it will be interesting to see where we go," says Beck. A two-year goal for QUK is to get quidditch recognised here as a sport. So, next stop the Olympics?

Beck believes there's a fair way to go yet. But then again, 30 years ago no one would have bet on skateboarding or BMX earning Olympic stripes. For quidditch fans everywhere, there's everything to play for –and they're also having a wizard time.
