letter

I

've always been a fan of a festival, probably because to me they signify summer and a type of bohemian freedom – but after a miserable weekend at Bestival about five years ago, when it poured and poured, and I felt just a bit too old, a bit 'over it' and like I'd rather be at home, warm and dry, I thought perhaps I'd had my day with them. How wrong I was. I was first introduced to a new, smart type of festival about 4 years ago. These festivals I speak of are designed for a diverse age range of people, including kids, with activities that extend beyond drinking oneself into a stupor and doing regrettable things. Rather, these festivals, that I've rounded up for you on page 20, are multi-sensory, artistic events celebrating everything from music and food, to culture, literature and crafts, and really are a cut above the rest. We also took a moment with the glorious Dame Judi Dench, who spoke to us about India, Bond and the upcoming election. And with spring officially here and the sun teasing us with the thought of summer, our fashion guru Charlotte Adsett has pulled together her favourite summer trends and made them wearable. We have our usual wealth of beauty, interiors, food and property content to enjoy. So flick, read and enjoy this issue, and I will see you next month, by which time I will have replaced my winter wardrobe with a vibrant set of threads. I hope you enjoy the issue! u

ARTS & CULTURE / SPOTLIGHT This year’s

FRINGE WILL BE AN explosion of

creativity

LIVING ON THE FRINGE This years Wandsworth Fringe Festival will be a myriad of theatrical treats- its time to take your pick

Battersea will be hosting a horde of Avant-garde activities; such as The Blackshaw Theatre Companies’ reimagined version of Alice in Wonderland, a family friendly production that will take place at the Battersea Library. There will also be the performance art piece ‘Function Generator’ in Battersea Park, where the artist Alistair McClymont will host a large-scale sound experiment and artwork display. In Clapham you can expect to hear tribal music, as Clapham Junction presents a South African showcase. The event contains the Soweto Spiritual Singers, and the moving play The Way We Heal, an insight into African spiritualism. The Fringe Festival uses artistic endeavor to draw communities together and will host several acts personal to the Wandsworth area. One of these will be ‘Mapping Wandsworth’ by the Wandsworth Museum. An act, which will unfurl Wandsworth’s stories and secretsuncovering what has been hidden from history. As the Fringe Festival has expanded since 2014 there is vast scope, with so much more to choose from. It will be an eclectic mix of material, and there will be enough to envelop all of your senses. u

T

he Fringe Festival is taking over Wandsworth; brace yourselves for two weeks of cutting edge entertainment across Battersea, Clapham and Wandsworth. As usual this year’s Fringe will be an explosion of creativity; a cornucopia of art, theatre and music which will excite and entertain.. The Fringe Festival is fertile ground for the arts: exciting and experimental acts on the “fringe” of society. In Balham you can expect to see a live orchestra as

well as an offering of groundbreaking theatrical performances. Some theatrical highlights include the Pope Head production of The Secret Life Of Francis Bacon, a one-man play focusing on the sordid personal life of the beloved British artist. As well as the critically acclaimed Phone Whore (a one-act play with frequent interruptions) created by Cameron Moore, a playwright/ performer, and activist and genuine sex operator. The play was dubbed “the critics choice of the Houston Fringe” in 2013.

DAME The epitome of ageless cool, Judi Dench appears in a ground-breaking play broadcast live on election night… Judi for PM? Wo r d s A l i s o n H a m n e r

ame Judi Dench loves a challenge. Recently turned 80, she continues to take on starring roles and new ideas. She’s currently gracing the sequel to the surprise movie hit, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, as the love interest of the equally cool Bill Nighy. And this month she’s treading the boards at the Donmar Warehouse in The Vote, a play set in a fictional polling station, to be broadcast live on TV on the evening of May 7. It’s the next step in a career remarkable for its longevity and successs. One of the country’s biggest stars of the stage and screen, Judi has been an actress for 60 years including four decades on the British stage for the National Shakespeare Company and the Old Vic.

Judi’s numerous films include 10 Baftawinning performances plus seven Oscar nominations and a win for a hilarious eight-minute performance as Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love. Not one to be typecast, she has owned numerous roles from her wickedly nuanced performance as the vengeful lesbian in Notes on a Scandal to her heartbreaking portrayal of crumbling dementia in Iris. And of course her recruitment as M in 1995’s Bond blockbuster, Goldeneye, added new fans to her audience for her convincing role as 007’s superior, sadly succumbing to a fatal end in last instalment, Skyfall. Judi’s latest film, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, centres on an eclectic gathering of retirees, eager for a last sip of the summer wine amongst the colourful commotion of India’s Jaipur.

I’ve always

for 50 years or so

Having appeared in the first episode, Dench was obviously considered essential for the second. “One moment I was at home, the next, on a plane back to Rajasthan,” she laughs. “I don’t even remember anyone asking me. But I was so grateful to go back.” Why does she think The First Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was such an unexpectedly big hit? “I think probably it was quite refreshing to have something that was about people our age who are all struggling and trying to not fit into a slot and not be taken for granted. To do something daring and defy what’s happening to them.” As one who defies her age over and over again, she might have something, there. Judi also enjoyed working with much of the original cast, including fellow Dame of the British Empire, Maggie Smith and American silver fox, Richard Gere. “You don’t have to worry about making a fool of yourself in front of them because they’ve seen you making a fool of yourself for 50 years or so,” she says.

The location of the film affected her profoundly, too. “The whole experience of India changed me,” she says. “The one thing I didn’t have to act about Evelyn was her passion for the country and the people. I just was bewitched by it.” Best Exotic Marigold Hotel director John Madden has called Judi ‘box office gold’. But famously, she doesn’t take her success for granted. “I’ve always been afraid the next role isn’t going to come,” she says. “Trevor Nunn once came to wish me luck and said, ‘why are you always in tears on a first night?’ I said, ‘it’s because I never think I’m going to be employed again.’ “And although it’s been

19 Chiswick_May15_Judi_Dench.indd 19

quite a jokey, light-hearted thing to say, in the depths of me, I still have that fear and perhaps it’s very healthy to be like that. Perhaps I don’t want it to change.” What Judi doesn’t like is being offered parts that are just like the ones she’s just played, which happens all the time. “I don’t want to play somebody like the last person I’ve played – I want to play a person who’s as different as possible.” she says. The many roles she has taken are testament to her love of trying something new. Judi’s life has revolved around acting and she met her late husband, Michael when she was playing Portia in The Merchant of Venice in 1971. Their 42 -year-old daughter Finty will be joining Judi, playing her daughter in James Graham’s new play The Vote at Donmar Warehouse on election night. Judi’s last appearance at the Donmar was in the 1970s. The play has a huge ensemble cast of about 50 actors, including Mark Gatiss, Catherine Tate and Timothy West. It’s set in a fictional London polling station in the last hour-and-a-half before polls close and will be screened on More 4 at that exact time on election day itself, from 20:30 to 22:00. Judi will play a voter who arrives at the polling station with her daughter to join the the ‘diverse, diligent and often hilarious individuals’ who turn out to vote. No doubt Judi will be as convincing as ever – no part is too difficult for this amazing Dame. 

Summer Sounds Fancy the freedom of a festival this summer? We round up the top three festivals for a more sophisticated crowd W o r d s R o m y va n d e n b r o e k e

Wi l d e rn ess et in Cornbury Park in picturesque Oxfordshire, Wilderness Festival is the leading boutique event in Britain. Despite popularity growing rapidly, the festival has managed to defend its reputation as one of the most sophisticated, family-friendly events of the year. Snapping up the Best Festival Activity Award in 2013 from the UK festival awards, the 2015 timetable of extra curricular activities is continuing in the same vein. Feeling delicate after a heavy night on the Pimms and prosecco (yes, it’s that kind of festival)? There’s plenty to help refresh and revive you for the evening ahead. Indulge in treatments at the wellbeing spa, take a refreshing dip in the emerald lakes or eat away your hangover at one of the festivals S

Other highlights for this year’s festival include Bjork headlining, an exciting schedule of engaging talks and debates, and an extensive theatre and arts timetable, with a performance from solo violinist, Diana Yukawa, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland performed by Opera Holland Park. And if this isn’t enough you can also horse ride, go fly fishing, try your hand at archery, learn how to do the tango, create your own perfume, watch the Wilderness cricket match, play ping pong, meditate or even get a facial. There are also Mortimer Nannies who will be onsite offering bespoke babysitting to any parent looking for a break from trekking around with their little ones, although with such a great timetable of things to do, it’s likely you wont want to… until it gets dark. wildernessfestival.com u

Chefs keeping festivalgoers fed this year include Angela Hartnett, Niklas Ekstedt (the man behind Michelin-starred EKSTEDT), Mark Hix, Nuno Mendes (Chiltern Firehouse), Scott Hallsworth (Korobuta) and James Knappett (formerly Noma, now

Po rt E l i o t festival like no other, Port Eliot has succeeded in staying under A the radar from mainstream festival-goers year on year. The festival is set within a Grade-1 listed house, park and garden in Cornwall, and celebrates all things artistic. With a programme covering music, literature, food, fashion and entertainment, and with a fullyfledged ‘Children’s Area’, the festival is ideal for families and the more experienced party animal alike. The festival attracts a refined crowd; successful and cultured Londoners looking for something more than just live music. Festival sleeping conditions aren’t

Each year the festival secures bigger and better acts and chefs; this year they've scored Grace Jones, DJ Harvey, Andrew Weatherall, Kate Tempest and Ghost Poet. Food is a big focus here too, with London's leading street food vendors setting up shop and banquets hosted by imitable chefs. You can also indulge in a proper slap up meal at the 2 AA rosette holding Hotel Portmerion, where head chef Mark Threadgill will be cooking up a storm. festivalnumber6.com u

FEATHER IN YOUR CAP Doff your hat to London’s best milliners, as they share their expert advice on selecting, styling and showcasing the perfect chapeau. Wo r d s s t e p h a n i e k i n g

W

hen it comes to purchasing a crown for your cranium, West London is the only place one need visit. With some of the world’s best established and emerging milliners conveniently located in the city’s central postcodes (or at least, their stockists), there is really no excuse for not accessorising your wardrobe with one of their extraordinary designs. But who are these masters of millinery? Enter: Stephen Jones, Awon Golding, Keely Hunter, Emily Baxendale of Emily-London, and Rachel Black. Their head piece wizardry is unparalleled, and an irrefutable essential this wedding season. Considering that May also marks the beginning of the spring racing calendar, Absolutely sought the help of these hair accessory experts. Here's their sage advice on all matters millinery. C h a p e au S e le c ti o n ba s i c s What makes a great hat? “The person who is wearing it,” says Jones, explaining that the secret to pulling off a dramatic chapeau is, “without question, confidence.” Though he continues, “But the hat can give you confidence, you don’t have to have it yourself.” Hunter and Baxendale all concur, where Black feels that “a hat doesn’t need to overpower you in order to make a statement; a beautifully crafted detail such as a bow or flower is enough.” Golding is adamant that hats should “accentuate your best assets.” How do you know you’re

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

STEPHEN JONES, SS15, ‘HYSTERIA WISTERIA’ HAT

doing this? Baxendale provides the solution: “Angles are very important with hats. There are different ways of wearing every hat, and it is important to know what [angle] enhances and flatters your features.” Hunter also notes scale is imperative when purchasing a hair accessory: “The piece needs to fit the wearer, and I don’t mean just the size. Things like balance are critical and how [it] works with the overall outfit.” h at w e a r i n g h ow to Baxendale explains that at Emily-London, “We take into consideration the style of the event and the look [our clients] want to

portray. We always advise clients to not over-accessorise.” The Wimbledon milliner adds, “People often think with hats it’s better to wear your hair up. But for a more contemporary look, don’t be afraid to experiment with loose waves or a fishtail braid.” Golding recommends that taller women opt for wide brim hats, where shorter women should select styles that add height, such as designs with sweeping feathers or quills. As Jones advises (see Style Guideline No. 3), how a hat functions is as important as its form. He says that when preparing for a special occasion, like the races or a wedding, hat styling products are as vital as the outfit, as “these things really help to anchor the hat, even on a ten-force gale.” After all, losing your hat at Ascot is so not chic. And speaking of gauche: In today’s sartorially-flexible society, where dress standards are elastic and the fashion faux pas is a discontinued notion, what are the hat wearing guidelines? As far as formal functions are concerned, what are the Dos and Don’ts of donning a head piece? H a i r Acc e s s o ry E ti q u e t te Ultimately, the difference between a head piece intended for the races and one intended for a wedding, so Jones says, is that, “At a wedding the bride is supposed to be the centre of attention. At the races you have much more freedom, because you can be the centre of attention.” Golding agrees: “This is the bride’s day, so try not to upstage her with your best Carmen Miranda impression.” All bets are off (or on) at Ascot,

FASHION / FEATURE AWON GOLDING Raised in India, Hong Kong and England, Awon Golding’s multicultural heritage is to thank for her bold design aesthetic. Already, the fashion writer-turned-milliner has won the Industry Prize at 2013's Hat Designer of the Year competition for her striking head wear. Recently, SS15 witnessed Golding’s debut in London Fashion Week's Headonism initiative, which was founded by Jones.

KEELY HUNTER RACHEL BLACK, SS15, ‘NOT BEFORE TIME’ HAT

w h e r e h at s a r e h e a d e d hile Black maintains that “hats W don’t feature in our wardrobes as they might once have done,” she says that “technologies such as 3D and digital printing are opening up so many incredible opportunities in fashion as a whole, not just millinery.” Unilaterally, all milliners feel that now is a very exciting time for hats. Even though they may never “have the same level of dedicated wearers as in the old days,” says Golding, she affirms Baxendale’s sentiments that “their popularity is on the ascent.” But more so than ever, Black notices a shift in paradigm: removing her incredibly covetable creations from the equation, she says that her clients keep returning because they crave an authentic chapeau shopping experience – one that’s devoid of mass produced items

© STEPHEN JONES

however, with Jones stating, “If you’re going to Ascot you’ll want to wear something that is the most special of your year.” Duly noted. Although Hunter has a slightly different take on the matter: she’s primarily “interested in the concept of hats as accessories,” believing that hats shouldn't be worn exclusively to the races; they “can be simple, luxurious pieces that can be worked into your everyday wardrobe, like an amazing pair of shoes.”

Kensington and Chelsea College graduate Keely Hunter aims to re-contextualise typically industrial, ‘unworkable’ materials into delicate, wearable pieces. It’s no wonder, then, that Selfridges' Bright Young Thing has appeared in British Vogue, Vogue Italia, Wallpaper*, Glamour UK and Grazia.

Stephen Jones’ Style Guidelines 1. It’s quite good for hair to be behind the ears. Sometimes you can see too much hat and too much hair and you lose the face, which is the point of communication. 2. Choose your hat to suit your face, not the fashion, because if you feel beautiful you will be beautiful. 3. Don’t forget the arsenal of styling products like hairspray, hair grips, bobby pins, even scrunchies.

and poor customer service. Evidently our changing consumer behaviour is giving these talented craftspeople further encouragement to keep experimenting, to keep pushing the boundaries. So with their creative freedom producing magnificent designs, why wouldn’t you want to showcase their skills this spring? T HE E X PE RT pa n e l

EMILY-LONDON, SS15, ‘CORSHAM’ HAT

Regarded as one of the world’s most influential milliners, Cheshire-born Jones is synonymous with creative genius. No idea too radical or fanciful, this Central Saint Martins alumnus is renowned for his headline-making hats, worn by royalty of the British, pop and fashion variety. Since opening his first salon in Covent Garden in 1980, Jones’ dedication to his craft has earned him an Order of the British Empire and the appointment as Royal Designer.

EMILY-LONDON Emily Baxendale, the Founder and Creative Director of Emily-London, is the London College of Fashion alumna boasting a client list that includes Princess Alexandra and Her Majesty the Queen. In her South Wimbledon studio, Baxendale blends functionality with femininity, creating unfailingly elegant hair accessories.

RACHEL BLACK After starting her millinery label in 2011, Rachel Black’s focus has been on providing women with contemporary designs that are as comfortable as they are attentiongrabbing. Her intent is simple: to allow the wearer’s “inner drama queen” to be unleashed. A favourite amongst brides, Black’s work has been featured in British Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar UK, Cosmopolitan UK, Grazia, and also, on Cheryl Cole’s head. u

ot so long ago, someone, I can't remember who, was talking me through their monthly beauty regime. They head to various salons for regular preening: from eyebrow waxing to shellac manicures and pedicures, and regular waxing. Oh, one thing I do remember is that they were a natural brunette, but had been dying their hair blonde for most of their life. I remember letting out an exasperated sigh after they reeled off the things they do to “keep themselves looking good”, and asked, quite genuinely, “But how can you be bothered?” Rather than feeling like I was less of a woman for not partaking in even half of the aforementioned treatments, made me feel relieved that I’m pretty low maintanence. The only ‘regular’ treatments I get are as follows: eyebrow waxing, the occassional trim of my hair and, even more rarely, a pedicure. Of course, my job requires me to try more than just these three things, but that's not to say I'd be forking out on it otherwise, quite the opposite. I've found the things that work for me and I’ve stuck to them. A pedicure is one of my favourites. There's nothing more satisfying, in my mind, than having my feet buffed, exfoliated, nails filed and painted. I have, in my time as a beauty writer and as an adult woman, indulged in a fair few pedicures and only few places sit at the top of my list. All About the Girl is one of them. This charming salon in Battersea is girly, but in a non-offensive way, and the staff are experts in their field. Owner Tana Ramsay, Gordon Ramsay's wife, flits in and out, but greeted me on the day of my treatment. After a quick hello, my therapist was back working on my feet, soaking and scrubbing as she went. I opted for a deep navy blue chosen from the Leighton Denny collection. My toes looked clean, tidy and ready to reveal themselves in a pair of cute beige open-toe heels. Now I just need the sun to put on his hat... u

Caroline Lucey We meet the woman behind activeinstyle.com I n t e r v i e w Elizabeth Hut ton

Why did you decide to start an e-commerce site selling only activewear? I had been living in Australia and working for the global activewear brand Lorna Jane. I fell in love with their clothing and with the idea that a women should have a gym kit that is as fashionable as her everyday wardrobe. When I moved back to the UK I started importing Lorna Jane and selling it. There was such a great response from British women that I set up the ActiveinStyle website. What advice wouce you give to women and mothers who want to get healthier and fitter? Make time for exercise. It’s so easy to put it at the bottom of your to-do list but it’s so important. Plan your excercise and treat it as you would all of your other engagements so that you can’t cancel them. Everyone needs ‘me time’ and heading to a class, going out for a run or just a walk is doing something for you. What’s your favourite thing about living in Clapham? I love the open spaces of Clapham Common and Battersea Park. There is a sense of community in both Clapham Old Town and Northcote Road that I love but then in just a couple of minutes I can be in the middle of central London.

Super Fly

What’s your favourite local workout? I go to Reach Fitness at least twice a week for a full-body, intense workout which I love. But I also go to Yoga Haven for some much-needed stretching. Where is your favourite healthy eating spot? In terms of cafés, my favourite for coffee is Brickwood on Clapham Northside while for pancakes I love Cafe Tamra on Northcote Road. ◆

Doctor Who? Absolutely talks to the man behind many a face, Dr Khan I n t e r v i e w A B S O L U T E LY ABSOLUTELY: How did the Harley Street Clinic come about? DR KHAN: My wife was working in medically-based skincare and had a room in Harley Street where she saw celebrity and media clients. She suggested I start working with her one day a week to supply the demand for botox and dermal fillers. Within six months we had a full time clinic and have gone from strength to strength. AM: What is the philosophy of the clinic? DK: A light touch is our philosophy. We want you to look your best. We offer everything from a facial to a full facelift, give honest advice and never let you overdo it! AM: How do you differentiate between cases when considering surgical or nonsurgical procedures? DK: There are lots of factors to consider, including your lifestyle, health and what you want to achieve. For instance, if you have a young child to look after, full on laser resurfacing that makes you look scary for

a week is unacceptable. We spend time during your consultation talking about your expectations and how we can achieve them. AM: Are there different benefits to both? DK: Sometimes only surgery will achieve the result you want, but some people do not want surgery, or their health may not permit it. There are always ways of improving the skin’s tone, texture and quality, and that can be as valuable as full on surgery. Ultimately, it’s the assessment that’s vital to a happy ending. AM: What is the longest surgery you’ve ever performed? DK: Fat removal and body sculpting can be take up to four hours or more. AM: If someone is determined to get a procedure, but in your expert opinion it’s not necessary, how do you deal with it? DK: We don’t do it and explain why. Unfortunately, someone somewhere may perform the procedure.

AM: In you opinion, what public figure has used surgery well? And, what about a celebrity who has taken things to far…? DK: There are many examples of good and bad surgery; Sharon Osborne for instance has openly admitted to having surgery and has looked amazing, however she may have gone a little far now. People who have had great surgery often do not admit to it. Gillian Taylforth is an example of good and appropriate procedures, she has returned to EastEnders looking younger than the son she is supposed to have given birth to 45 years ago. Gillian has had Silhouette Soft Sutures and regular facials with us. AM: What is the most common request you get? DK: To lift jowls and reduce forehead lines and crows feet. AM: What exciting innovations and techniques are you excited about? DK: Silhouette Soft Sutures have revolutionised minimally-invasive facelifting. AM: How do you stay discreet posttreatment? DK: There may be some bruising and swelling, so plan your treatments in advance so that you can keep out of sight if you want to. AM: What’s the most bizarre request you’ve ever had for surgery? DK: Toe amputation to make the foot fit into designer shoes – totally inappropriate!  The Anti-Ageing Show London takes place on the 16th and 17th of May at Olympia. A Great Match Wine and food pairings for the month of May B y J a n e Pa r k i n s o n

Crab cakes

he succulent and fruity nature of crab meat makes it a no-brainer match with dry and crisp whites or dry and fruity rosés. When it’s served fishcake-style, though, the wine needs to be especially fresh to cut through the richness of the oil in which it’s been deep-fried, but also needs to be fruity enough to match the chilli sauce that’s often served on the side. Austrian’s signature white grape is a great option because it’s dry, zingy and fruity and is fantastic value for money, Signature Grüner Veltliner 2013 £6.99, Morrisons.  T

Roast l a mb

amb is actually one of the most versatile meats when it comes to pairing with different wines. When it’s roasted with rosemary and garlic you could go all out with a big Tuscan red like a Brunello di Montalcino or you could try a delicious blend of grapes from the south of France, where you can pick up a serious bargain. This one, made from Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre grapes, is so fruity and herbal it’s crying out for roast lamb, Tesco Finest St-Chinian 2013, £8.99.  L

Chocol ate & nuts

here are far too many scare stories out there about matching wine with chocolate, but it can be really a successful pairing, and both with dry and sweet wines. However, when it comes to milk or dark chocolate covered in nuts, or honeycomb, or both, there is one hedonistic match, and that’s a Rutherglen Muscat from Australia. For a gooey but fresh one that’s full of honeyed, toffee loveliness, try Campbell’s Rutherglen Muscat, £12.49, Waitrose.  T

– thighs or wings – served with spicy Gochujang Red sauce and Jinjuu Black Soy sauce for dipping. The meat and batter combo was succulent and deliciously salty. That said, the only thing making it ‘Korean fried chicken’ were the aforementioned sauces. We then tucked into a platter of Bo Ssam pork belly. Twice-cooked Black Berkshire pork belly came generously coated in a dweng-jang and gochujang glaze and served with a side of apple cabbage kimchi. Taking the winning combination of apple and pork and adding in the fiery marinade kept it classic but with a clever Korean twist. Then we tucked into a bibimbap bowl; this traditional dish is comprised of fresh white rice, seasonal vegetables and your choice of meat – we went for Bulgogi marinated beef fillet – before being topped off with a fried egg and a drizzle with tangy Gochujang sauce. It could’ve done with a little more sauce, but the thinly sliced beef was tender, tasty and worked beautifully with the different elements of the bowl. We skipped dessert, which I regret in hindsight, but after such a feast of fried and fiery dishes, our stomachs could take no more. I guess I’ll just have to go back. u

aving explored the many culinary delights of New Malden, the Korean area of London, I was a little skeptical about eating at Jinjuu. I like authentic Korean, but I knew not to expect that here. Translated, the Kingly Street Korean restaurant's moniker means Pearl, a seemingly unrelated name but pretty nonetheless. The inaugural restaurant from celebrity chef Judy Joo has brought refined, hybrid Korean food to the centre of London. We started our feast with the kong bowl; a full bowl of steamed edamame topped with the most moreish Jinjuu chilli panko mix

imaginable. The Sae-woo pops – skewered crispy fried prawn cakes – were, sadly, a little flavourless, but the accompanying gochujang mayonnaise was totally addictive. The Jinjuu carnitas fries were ordered our of sheer curiosity: the menu's description reads, “Korean-Mexican Disco Fries,” but left little to be desired. They were nothing more than soggy chips slathered in too much kimchi and topped, bizarrely, with grated mature cheddar. The tuna tartare however, was beautiful. Slices of raw tuna came seasoned with soy and ginger, and finished with jalapeno and shallot salsa. Then came the bigger plates: we began by sharing the signature Jinjuu chicken, The Jin Chick. hy would you go to Gstaad in summer? I had been posed this question before setting off on my brief, mid-July sojourn to the idyllic Alpine village, and during the train journey from Berne airport through the picturesque Swiss landscape, I had time to ponder it. True, it was a few degrees cooler here than the London I’d left behind (typical) and the chalets did seem to have something amiss without their snow-covered roofs and icicles, but Gstaad outside of ski season is certainly not without its charms. For one thing, Switzerland is visually stunning in summer. The alpine peaks are still dusted in snow but the land flourishes with spring flowers. Everything is a lush shade of green, and great plumes of cloud seem to tumble down the mountains. The two-hour train journey simply flew by, with the glorious views providing ample distraction.

Gstaad’s motto is: ‘Come up, slow down’ alluding to its leisurely pace and high altitude. Actress Julie Andrews, who owns a holiday home in the area, describes it as the “last paradise in a crazy world.” Along with Andrews, a plethora of famous dignitaries have chosen Gstaad as their holiday getaway, and looming over the centre of town is the retreat of choice for the world’s elite: the famous Gstaad Palace hotel. Chugging into the quaint train station, a chauffeur in immaculate Gstaad Palace uniform doffs his peaked cap and imperceptibly takes my cases from me. A lift to the hotel is welcome but somewhat superfluous; the Palace is mere minutes away and is visible from practically every angle with its castle-like structure and extravagant towers. The Palace may look imposing on the outside, but once inside it’s as cosy and intimate as any alpine chalet. The interior decor is a tasteful Swiss palette of subtle check, muted colours and traditional wooden

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST furniture. A small balcony jutting off my spacious bedroom provides views across the village and a personal sanctuary in which to sit back, take in the sublime surroundings, and relax. Gstaad Palace opened in December 1913 and, following a hugely successful inaugural skiing season, the building was extended the following year. The hotel has survived two World Wars and ensuing economic turmoil, and has been managed by the Scherz family for nearly 80 years. After the Second World War, international music stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Édith Piaf and Louis Armstrong held exclusive concerts at the Palace, and the hotel has attracted Hollywood stars and royalty throughout its history, welcoming everyone from Paul McCartney to Princess Diana. Rumour has it that Michael Jackson, friend of Palace regular Liz Taylor (whose husband-at-the-time Richard Burton said they “only felt home in Gstaad”), enquired about purchasing the Palace, simply because he “liked the castle.” The hotel is still synonymous with celebrity clientele and there’s a distinct air of

glamour to it, particularly inside the retro Greengo night club, which opened in the 1970s. But the Palace embodies a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, and it’s this plus an unrivalled personal service that keeps guests – celebrity or otherwise – coming back year after year. But what is Gstaad’s appeal outside of skiing season? Well, for starters, summer may be the one time you’re physically able to stay in the Palace – its winter season sells out months in advance. However, another attraction is that, unlike other alpine resorts, Gstaad is very much open over summer, and there’s a host of cultural and sporting activity. Most famous is the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open tennis tournament, which

The Palace embodies a RELAXED, intimate ATMOSPHERE that keeps GUESTS COMING BACK year after year takes place in late July and this year celebrates its centenary. The Palace is a family-friendly place, hosting a kid’s summer tennis tournament and offering family-friendly packages throughout the season, including a delightful Willy Wonka-inspired excursion with a trip to legendary chocolate factory Maison Cailler. For active types who can pry themselves away from the Palace’s restaurants, bar, pretty terrace area or award-winning spa, there’s an Olympicsized outdoor heated pool (one of the first to be built in Switzerland), an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, Pilates studio and gym. The mild summer temperatures and majestic views are perfect for nature lovers who can indulge in woodland walks, hikes and biking, plus a highly-recommended outing to the nearby Glacier 3000, which has even more high-altitude rambles and simply breathtaking views. For adrenaline junkies (or hard-to-please teenagers) the Palace can organise high-octane activities like paragliding, jeep safaris and even river rafting.

67 Chiswick_May15_ TRAVEL.indd 67

Another must-do is a visit to the Palace-owned Walig Hut, a traditional Swiss cabin 1,700 metres above the village of Gsteig, originally built in 1786. With little but the dulcet chimes of cowbells for company, Walig Hut makes a whimsical lunchtime or dinner excursion (traditional Swiss fondue is cooked by a private chef, followed by a shot of fiery Kirsch) or even a romantic overnight stay. Condé Nast Traveller awarded it Best Wilderness Hotel in 2013, and it’s easy to see why. One of my last excursions organised by the Palace was a horse drawn carriage ride around Gstaad. Our guide (born and bred in Gstaad) was infectiously enthusiastic, not to mention thoroughly knowledgeable. As the afternoon began to give way to evening, we trotted through the pristine town centre, where cars are forbidden and the Chanel and Louis Vuitton boutiques are ensconced in pretty, traditional chalet designs. Outside of the centre, at the grassy feet of the mountains, our guide told stories of growing up in Gstaad and pointed out her childhood home. In a moment of utter tranquillity, I deemed Gstaad to be the most romantic, idyllic and serene place on earth. So, why would you visit it in summer? My answer is, why would you not?  Rates start from £348 (490CHF) in a Single Classic room (per room and night including half-board, all taxes and service) and from £525 (740CHF) for a Double Small Room. WHAT IS IT?

T

he Vineyard Spa is, unsurprisingly, a haven for Epicureans. The hotel and spa is owned by the Michael family, who also preside over the Peter Michael winery in Knights Valley in California. The hotel is inspired by the Judgement of Paris, a famous wine tasting in 1976 that saw Californian wine surpass classic French wines in a blind tasting held by British wine merchant, Steven Spurrier. The hotel displays a large-scale painting of the notorious tasting, also by the same title, which united some of the wine world’s most influential wine writers and journalists. The hotel prides itself on its impressive private art collection, as well as its 3,000 bins, with around 100 of them available to taste by the glass.

T

THE RESTAURANT

he “5 Bubbles” spa is nice, but it’s definitely not the hotel’s focal point. The swimming pool isn’t great for swimming in, as it’s round and quite small, but the palm tree-framed atrium in which it is set is glorious on a sunny day. The treatment rooms, although airy and light, are equally unexceptional, which is by no means a comment on the service you’ll receive: The therapists are welcoming and thorough, with customer service clearly at the forefront of their training. We went all-out, first indulging in a pedicure, which incorporated paraffin wax treatment and high quality Mavala nail polishes. Then came the massage; let's ignore the irritating, predictable muzak, because the masseuse was competent and responded to each and every knot in my back. This, combined with the delicious Darphin oils used was so good and relaxed me so much that I had to take a nap afterwards.

O

ne of the best things about the hotel is the restaurant. Go all out and opt for the wine tasting menu; each delectable course comes with a sip of Californian wine and a sip of French wine so you can partake in your very own version of the Judgement of Paris. Head chef Daniel Galmiche believes, “Eating out is one of the greatest pleasures of life. I have made it my mission to communicate this.” There’s no doubt that he’s succeeded in his quest, even for my vegetarian companion, who was resigned to the belief that French chefs just don’t do vegetarian food. Not the case, as the seven-course menu was altered to suit her tastes. Meat or no meat, we were both very impressed.

ioneers of sound, Bang & Olufsen are renowned for their commitment to creating innovative and premium designs using the highest quality materials and technology. To coincide with the brand’s 90th anniversary, they hosted an event to celebrate the opening of their brand new showroom in Lavender Hill, Battersea. Attended by local personalities such as Jane Ellison – Battersea’s MP and newly appointed president of Wandsworth

Chamber of Commerce, who also cut the ribbon at the opening – the chairman of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce, Steve Pinto, several representatives from the architectural, interior design and luxury lifestyle industries, and a guest list of local business owners and admirers of the brand. The event was a partnership with 1st Stop AV showroom, Aston Martin, BoConcept, Marc Demarquette Chocolatiere and Absolutely magazines for a truly luxurious affair. During the event guests could browse the different kit with the help and

guidance of well-versed Bang & Olufsen staff, drawing attention to the distinctive range of designer technology most recently created to celebrate Bang & Olufsen’s 90th anniversary, officially titled the Love Affair Collection. This new range is an exclusive collection of six of the brand’s most current and iconic designs in its portfolio of luxury lifestyle products. Each design has then, for optimum luxury, been naunced with rose gold for a contemporary twist. Highlights include the BeoVision Avant television, which delivers exquisite imagery, iconic sound and elegant movement. While the BeoPlay A9 music system is a masterpiece, with a rose gold ring, warm walnut legs and a beautifully crafted iron-grey fabric front. Designed by Stine Goya, this piece of kit is as contemporary as they come and can even respond to your touch. For music on the go, the BeoPlay H6’s rose gold detailing is as practical as it is stylish, disguising itself as a piece of jewellery but providing clear, crisp sound. The event marked a great feat for the company and the new collection signified many more years ahead of them. Not in the market for a new TV or audio system? create a planting plan means that not only will the garden look good across all seasons, it will complement the outdoor space’s overall aesthetic.

P l a nti n g lants can often be overlooked but P they are an integral part of the design. They are like the soft furnishings of an interior scheme, bringing the scheme to life and adding colour and interest. Having a professional

COMBINING YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE with

functionality

Co n c e p t t is important that your exterior space not only looks fabulous but I works with your lifestyle. Producing a mood board or ‘concept sheet’ is a way of combining your own personal style with functionality. In other words, how you want to enjoy the space? Do you want a quiet retreat to escape the hectic city life, or a modern party pad to enjoy when your friends come round for Saturday night drinks? This phase is also when we look at how you want the finished garden to look and feel, be it sharp and modern or soft and traditional. M a ste r P l a n good garden designer will create a layout plan that reflects the A style of the concept whilst taking into consideration practical points, such as where the sun and shade are or proximity of entertaining areas to the kitchen.

A way of

B u i ld i n g th e D r e a m ringing together a good team of landscapers, electricians, B specialist contractors and plant nurseries is vital to creating a garden that appears as beautiful as the design. Every garden is completely different, and the build quality of all of the various elements is crucial.  ● B OR R OW ED SPACE For more information on Borrowed Space visit borrowedspace.co.uk and create your perfect lifestyle garden by calling Oliver on 07773 764 212.

ASK THE EXPERT david wel l esl ey w esl ey Fo u nd e r, I n de pe nd ent School s Show

Advice for students and parents on picking the best kind of holiday tuition before exam season starts he epithet of last month’s column focusing on the T need for balance in the build up to stressful public exams, should not be lost in their aftermath. Post exam leave and the long summer break should absolutely provide respite from arduous hours in the library. Of course steam must be let off and of course heady summer nights will be at the forefront of most teenagers’ priorities. And rightly so – they have worked incredibly hard (we hope) and should be rewarded for their efforts. I still vividly remember the post-GCSE holiday that my friends and I were let loose on… it was almost considered a rite of passage. Eleven weeks, give or take, is a considerable chunk of free time. Having spent so much time focusing on academics, it should be used as valuable period to align interests and skills. Encourage your child to balance their socialising with time to be productive and achieving – whether undertaking work experience, attending a sports camp, visiting a language school or perhaps becoming involved in local voluntary work. By broadening their horizons in this way, teenagers will not only learn the hugely valuable skill of balancing work and play, but with their achievements their confidence will flourish and they will relish the parties even more. 

Slow Learner

A new movement that says a real education can’t be rushed is gaining ground Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

R

emember the slow food movement? A reaction against mass-produced, air-freighted food led to a minor revolution. Well, now we have slow education. One of its promoters is Mike Grenier, an English teacher and housemaster at Eton who cofounded the movement. Grenier says: “It struck me that the model of processing people through exams with narrow ideas about teaching, was mimicking the worst aspects of a McDonald’s production line.” He became interested in creating a model for education that makes time for creative teaching and learning. It is less about teaching to the test and more about allowing children to think independently. It advocates long-term projects to allow children to experiment – and sometimes to fail as they learn. Matthew Moss High School, a mixed comprehensive in Rochdale, signed up to the movement 18 months ago and so far, it’s a great success. Three lessons a week have been freed up in years 7

85 Chiswick_May15_Education.indd 85

and 8 to give students time to develop projects they are really interested in. At the end, a viva examination explores their knowledge and understanding. The school has also developed a scheme whereby younger students volunteer to attend classes given by sixth-form pupils. The topics they teach aren’t connected to the exam syllabus; they are just of personal interest to the student teacher. Some critics query whether such ‘project-based learning’ is a return to the bad old days of the 1970s when children were left with gaping holes in their factual knowledge. But Grenier robustly refutes this, saying that slow education is avowedly not anti-academic. “We’re not progressive,” says Grenier. “The academic is fundamental. We also believe in teaching people how to do stuff. It is about producing self-reliant children and adults. In fact, it could be seen as highly academic, since it values learning for its own sake rather than for where it could lead.”  sloweducation.co.uk

robably the only job I hadn’t considered when I was young was that of an estate agent. I must have gone through all sorts of career ideas in my head including a royal marine, a fireman, an entrepreneur and even an astronaut; well we can all dream! For the first 18 years of my life I grew up in a small town in the North East of England, called Newton Aycliffe and went to school in an even smaller town called Barnard Castle, where I attended Barnard Castle School for over 10 years. Now, I am not sure my house master would give me a glowing report on what a model student I was and how well behaved I was, but I can honestly say those were some of the best memories I have despite at the time counting the days until I could branch out into the real world. Barney offered everything a young school boy could ask for; rugby, hockey, football, tennis and even cricket, not to mention some rather lovable and eccentric teachers. The one who stuck out for me was Mr Ewart. During my time at the school, Mr Ewart was the Deputy Headmaster and in my eyes held it all together. He had the most wonderful way of raising the morale of the school by merely stopping and having a quick chat with you and whoever you were with and taking the conversation to a crazy level and then bringing it back to sensibility. Before you knew it you had volunteered for one of the school’s worthy causes. As I am part of the Old Barnardians Club I am updated with the news of the school and it was with great

pleasure I heard that Mr Ewart had been made headmaster a few years after I had left. After leaving Barney I went traveling for 14 months with my two school friends Steve and Olly. We saw the sights of Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and parts of Europe. Having spent most of our time in Sydney, like most people travelling Australia do, we ended up working for a telesales company selling life insurance for a well-known Australian bank. Well, this was certainly an interesting introduction to sales! Upon returning to the UK in 2005 I moved to London to find work and be a part of something a little bigger than the small town I was from. A recruiter proposed my first job to me; it was a joint sales and lettings role at a small estate agency in West Norwood. I took on the task and the stigma that comes with being an estate agent, the dreaded question when having a drink in your local pub having met someone and they ask, “What do you do?” For many years I just said that I was in property sales, trying to glam it up a bit, but now I think the industry is changing and I am more than proud to say that I am an estate agent, even if it is at a lower volume. During my career I have worked mainly in The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and the London Borough of Wandsworth, where I have lived for the last four years. I love Wandsworth and all it has to offer to its residents, so I look forward to being here for many years to come.

HOUSE HUNTING with...

NICOLE CHAMBERLAND Managing Director at Chamberland Residential 020 8704 1313; chamberlandres.co.uk

Most satisfying transaction I’ve had… My most satisfying transaction was our first ever let as Chamberland Residential. It was on Stanbridge Road, SW15 back in 2011 and it was a landlord who took a chance on a brand new agent who didn’t have any properties, over the many other well established agencies in the area! We still rent his entire portfolio. Most interesting property I’ve been involved with: This has to be a property on Putney High Street which was completely unique, from its intricate entrance hall to the three personal saunas, the outstanding roof terrace with piped in sound, lights and water sprinklers.

I never thought I’d see: Phil Spencer in the flesh. We had the wonderful opportunity to rub shoulders with the notorious estate agent when we won gold and silver at the ESTA’s last year and he is just as lovely and charming (and handsome) as his persona is on TV. Best perks of the job… I have many professional tennis coaches as clients through word of mouth, and we have very graciously received Wimbledon Tickets as well as tickets for the ATP tour at the O2 over the years. I love tennis, so going to watch Murray and Djokovic battle it out was truly amazing!

Spring’s in full swing in Southfields

W

ith spring in full swing, many people are turning their thoughts to a potential move. Although there is plenty of speculation with regards to the forthcoming election, the local market in Southfields has proven to be very resilient. Mortgage rates are at an all time low and motivated purchasers are keen to secure that elusive family home. With a busy market and great buyer levels, sensibly priced properties are

receiving excellent levels of interest when they come to market. Once a hidden gem, Southfields is now very much an area on many buyers’ radars, and is becoming increasingly popular. Changes to the local shops, such as the revamped Delicious Deli on Replingham Road, will only see this increase. Should you be considering buying or selling in the area, our experienced team would be happy to help.

The INSIDE SCOOP of NEWS in your area FIRST LOOK AT THE OFFICE SPACE WITHIN BATTERSEA POWER STATION

B

attersea Power Station’s aweinspiring atriums, innovative amenity spaces and impressive roof garden are set to redefine working in the capital. Battersea Power Station Development Company (“BPSDC”) has launched its drive to attract world-class tenants to the Power Station, which is at the heart of London’s new office district. The first detailed images have been released of the stunning new office space. With 1,250,000 sq ft of net lettable office space across the 42-acre site, workers will also enjoy access to shops, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, hotels, an urban food hall, a 2,000 capacity event space and leisure facilities including a 6-acre Riverfront Park. At the heart of the estate is the Power Station, which features 470,000 sq ft of office space on the six upper floors of the central Boiler House section. These larger than average floor plates of 80,000 sq ft will be set around a central glass atrium measuring 80m long, by 20m wide and 26m high. Original and new exposed brickwork will mix with the industrial heritage of the Power Station. Architects Wilkinson Eyre and design practice The Rockwell Group have created some of the most awe-inspiring spaces for employees and their visitors. Set in the

014 was a very busy year for us in the lettings market with record breaking figures – the summer season was particularly active and the best we have experienced in a long time. 2015 has started really well and we have seen a high number of new applicants registering. In our particular patch (centred around Clapham South but extending to

heart of the building at the base of the atrium, the Boiler House Lounge is an incomparable shared space with the industrial wow factor. Renowned landscape and garden designer Andy Sturgeon, working alongside site-wide landscape architects LDA Design, will create The Sky Garden set on the roof of Switch House East. The garden is Station and will feature outdoor ‘boxes’ for meetings.

We currently have many more applicants than properties, with most being let within a one to two week period from initial marketing. If landlords are thinking of renting, now is certainly the time to do so as we move into the traditionally active Spring and Summer market. Clapham and the surrounds are areas which appeal to graduates starting out on the professional ladder, young professionals and growing families looking to live near the City but in a location which offers its own entertainment, green spaces and a lively mix of restaurants, bars and cafes.

ever underestimate the value of an agent who knows their patch. Featherstone Leigh have a strong presence across South West London, and our teams are really passionate about where we work – we are selling the area, not just the property. We price properties realistically, make use of relevant advertising and editorial opportunities, both locally and nationally, and promote properties across social media platforms. Here in Battersea, we also have an in-house mortgage advisor, who can help set up a mortgage for any potential buyers who have not already started this process. This can help us find out who is really serious about the property they are viewing, which will undoubtedly save the seller time and money. Overall, it is important to pick the agent that goes the extra mile. ou take a look at the unremarkable property details of this three bedroom Victorian house in South London and very little jumps out, apart from maybe its slightly shabby interior. And even that’s not too surprising – after all, the house is in the boho neighbourhood of Poets’ Corner near Herne Hill. “It’s one of those areas where a TV executive will live next to a wood cutter who will live next door to an up-andcoming singer,” says Anthony Shoring of local agent Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward. He says this property is generating plenty of online and offline viewings since it was listed on portal, OnTheMarket.com. So given South London is awash with terraced houses like this, what’s all the fuss about? The answer is that houses of this size and price within walking of a distance of a tube are becoming rare these days. The million-pound period

home market is rapidly making its way further and further south of the Thames. Poets’ Corner is a rack of around six roads built between the twin forks of Railton Road and Dulwich Road north of Herne Hill. The area is called Poets’ Corner because most of the roads are named after bards – including Shakespeare, Milton and Chaucer. The developer who built these streets and houses during the late 19th century would be pleased. The area attracts the more artistic type including Claire Rayner’s son and restaurant critic Jay Rainer and singer La Roux, the ‘falsetto from the ghetto’ was brought up here. Poets’ Corner is popular not only because it’s a Conservation Area, but also because you’ve got one foot in Brixton and its reputation for urban grittiness, pop up restaurants, famous bars and clubs, while having another in Herne Hill, which is rapidly gentrifying into an outpost of Dulwich. “I’ve been selling homes here for eight years and the biggest joy of this area for me is Brockwell Park and its Lido, which is at the end of Chaucer Road,” says Anthony Shoring. He says one downside is that good local schools are a bit thin on the ground and therefore the area attracts media types

147 MOST POPULAR.DPS.indd 3

either without children or whose children have flown the nest. People like this, therefore, don’t need such large houses and tend to have more money at their disposal. This is all pushing up prices locally, and quite dramatically too. Houses like this have been going for nearer £1m but this property, because it has been rented until now and needs money spending on it, is going for somewhat less. Its interiors aren’t that bad really. The tenants who lived here until recently were a lucky bunch – one of the bedrooms has a chandelier and the house is awash with lovely, original fireplaces. On the flip side the lounge features an obligatory round paper lantern, beloved of all lets. “If the property’s right around here then there’s huge demand,” says Anthony. “We sold a house on Barwell Road recently and, after first listing it for £800,000, it went for £827,000 after sealed bids.” He also says a similar property to the Chaucer Road but in better condition went for £940,000 in Shakespeare Road recently, “which was new ground for us.”

MODERNISM

Wo r d s N I G E L L E W I S

Is Modernism making a comeback?

M

odernism has a relatively short history in the UK but it’s been a contentious one. Disliked by a public who have struggled to embrace its tenets and reviled by Prince Charles, the style has remained a niche interest for most homebuilders and buyers. Consequently, Modernist homes are hard to spot in London. This would sadden Modernism’s original and founding architects. Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Erno Goldfinger and Frank Lloyd Wright all tried to introduce a new way of thinking about architecture

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

STYLE BIBLE.indd 101

and, although they created very different designs, embraced a common set of ideas. These included that form that should follow a building’s function; simplicity; honesty about the material used (i.e. no cladding); walls at 90-degree angles and the use of materials originally destined for industrial, rather than architectural, purposes – such as plate glass. Few realise that Modernism or ‘the Modern movement’ is really a US import via Germany. Architects such as Mies van der Rohe, who honed their skills in Germany’s Bauhaus school between the wars, fled fascism and emigrated to the US. Then, along with US home grown talent such as Frank Lloyd Wright, they began designing the white, angular properties we have come to know. But it took another 15

years for the style to land in the UK. So where did Modernism spring from? Its roots came both from a desire to find a ‘new architecture’ after the two world wars, the availability of both new materials and building techniques and also from the influence of Art Deco. Modernism went on to have a huge impact on our perception of what a house can be used for including open plan living. But planners are still suspicious of Modernism and in many of London’s conservation areas it’s impossible to get the green light to build a house in this style. Attitudes are changing, albeit glacially, and the occasional high-viz project gets the go ahead, a good example being the Shadow House on St Paul’s Crescent behind King's Cross, built in 2011. More famous but older Modernist houses include Erno Goldfinger’s home at No.2 Willow Road in Hampstead. But perhaps the best known in London is the Grade I listed Isokon Building on Lawn Road, also in Hampstead, built and designed during the 1930s. While the Isokon is the most admired, Erno Goldfinger was the best known architect in the UK, partly because Bond creator Ian Fleming had a spat with him during the early 1960s and pinched his surname to give to one of his book (and later film) villains. Goldfinger designed a clutch of tower blocks including most famously Trellick Tower in North Kensington. This brutalist edifice, which features 31 storeys and some 217 flats, was originally built to house council tenants but a growing number of properties within it are now in private hands; a three bedroom apartment within it recently sold for nearly £700,000. Trellick Tower is an example of the controversy Modernism can stir up. Hated by many of the locals, it was given Grade II* status in 1998 and has been home to many musicians include Blur and The Clash. Perhaps finally Modernism may be having its day.

Luxurious Lettings EXPERT ADVICE

POLLY WILLATTS

Conveyancing Manager at Londonwide Conveyancing, KFH 0800 023 1800; kfh.co.uk

Why does it matter who does my conveyancing?

D

elays can occur throughout the purchase process for a variety of reasons, many of which are outside the control of your conveyance. However, delays caused by conveyancers are very common so it’s important to choose carefully. You are putting the biggest, most stressful financial commitment of your life in their hands and it is their attitude, experience and work ethic that will mean either your success or failure. Ensure that your conveyancer is not too busy with too many cases; that they use email rather than the post; that if they are going on holiday they will arrange adequate cover; and that they are experienced enough to pre-empt potential issues. Opt for a conveyancing firm that offers a no sale no fee guarantee and if in any doubt, ask your local agent for a recommendation.
