October 2013
s the cold weather descends and the nights draw in, I find myself using any excuse to stay indoors. I’ll invite friends over for dinner and cook dreadful meals, organise film nights or simply curl up on the sofa with a cup of tea and a good book. Either way, if you’re going to be spending more time at home, it makes sense to try to make your surroundings as pleasant as possible. And so we decided to make this issue an interiors special, filled with everything you could possibly need to update and renovate your house. First of all, we’re at home with the experts, as we take a snoop around interior designer Natalia Miyar’s Battersea apartment. She tells us exactly how she achieved those finishing touches to give that professional ‘interior designer’ effect. Meanwhile, Brixton-based interior expert Ellie Laycock shows us how to upcycle those old, unloved furnishings, giving them a new lease of life in an extract from her new book. And of course, we have Georgie Coleridge Cole’s Renovation Diaries in which she chronicles the highs and lows of doing up her family home in Wandsworth. Alongside these interior inspirations, we also caught up with local chef Bruno Loubet who is appearing in Wimbledon BookFest this month, while Blur bassist Alex James tells us about the delights of the Dolomites. Combined with a selection of the best beauty products for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and our favourite picks for Halloween, you’ve got everything you could possibly need for the perfect October. Now curl up on that sofa and get reading! I hope you enjoy the issue.

WHAT’S ON In the Cinema
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS Directed by PAUL GREENGRASS Starring TOM HANKS
T
hese days when we think of pirates, it’s usually as the swaggering, Captain Jack Sparrow type, swigging rum and walking the plank rather than anything constituting a real threat. Four years ago all that changed. On 8th April, the world was gripped by the report of the Somali pirates that had come aboard the Maersk Alabama and subsequently taken the captain hostage. The story itself is obvious film fodder with few exaggerations needed to make it a thrilling ride. Directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Identity, United 93) and starring Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan, Castaway) as the stalwart Captain
Phillips, the film focuses on Phillips’ four days of capture with the Somali pirates who kept him a prisoner as they fought to strike a bargain with the US authorities. The film depicts the strength of mind of one man as he copes with a situation no one ever thought was possible. Ever versatile, Hanks succeeds in a masterful portrayal of a man in a state of incomprehension and shock. As is often the case with Hanks, his most powerful moments are when he remains silent, conveying the Captain’s terror, disbelief and resolve with just a look. A heartpounding thriller guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat. 18 October

utney residents and classicalcrossover boyband Blake have become the first of their genre in the UK to be added to the Radio 2 playlist with their single ‘So Happy’. The band has enjoyed considerable success, having performed for Shirley Bassey’s 70th birthday party and won ‘Album of the Year’ at the Classical BRIT awards with their first album ‘Blake’. ‘So Happy’ is their first single to ever be added to the most popular radio station in Britain. Overcome with excitement, band member Stephen Bowman posted this on his Facebook page: ‘I’m supposed to be keeping this news to myself, but frankly I’m a little too happy to do so.... Oh yeah, we did it!’ The single is the second to be taken from their latest album ‘Start Over’, which marks the group’s transition from strictly classical music to a decidedly more pop sound. blakeofficial.com

t is 11pm, and the cells at Wandsworth Prison have been locked for the night. There is a fragile silence interrupted every few minutes by the loud cries of an inmate, who vents his anger into the echoing hallways. Then, the sound of footsteps coming down the corridor quietens the prisoner. He looks up from his cell to see the figure of a woman, dressed in tattered grey clothing, her face covered by a darkened veil.
This is an account – based on a description from an article in the Wandsworth Borough News from 23rd December 1976 – of the Grey Lady of Wandsworth Prison. A seemingly benign phantom, she has been seen roaming the corridors so many times over the last century that guards and inmates have nicknamed her ‘Annie’. Yet her presence is a reminder of the dark history of this building, which has been a place of incarceration for nearly two centuries. The Grey Lady is believed to be the ghost of Kate Webster, a prisoner from the days when Wandsworth held both men and women. A career criminal, Kate came to England after an impoverished childhood in County Wexford in Ireland. Yet in January 1879, a thirty-year-old Kate managed to secure a respectable position in the service of Mrs Julia Thomas, a twice-widowed lady in her fifties living at No. 2 Vine Cottages in Richmond. However, it didn’t take long for relations between the two women to
sour. Kate’s alcoholism frustrated her devout Presbyterian employer, who eventually asked her to leave. A tense few weeks followed in which Kate resentfully worked out her notice, with her mistress becoming increasingly frightened by her violent mood swings. Then, one Sunday, Mrs Thomas returned from church to find Kate heavily intoxicated after a drinking session at a nearby pub, the Hole in the Wall. A row erupted and, in a fit of rage, Kate threw the older woman down the stairs. Realising she had injured Mrs Thomas, Kate strangled her to subdue her screams, then proceeded to cut her lifeless body into pieces and boil it, later giving the dripping to local children to eat. The remains were thrown off Richmond Bridge, all except the head, which disappeared. Despite the brutality of the crime, Kate seemed unconcerned, and afterwards went to Hammersmith to see some friends wearing one of Mrs Thomas’ dresses. But just a few days after the murder, a box washed up on the banks of the Thames containing a ‘mass of white flesh’. Next a foot was found on an allotment in Richmond. Yet without a head, police were unable to identify the body. By mid-March neighbours had noticed Mrs Thomas’ absence and notified the police, who began to search for Kate. Despite having fled to Ireland, she was tracked down, arrested and found guilty at the Old Bailey. Incidentally, in a macabre twist of fate, the head was actually found back in 2010, in the garden of the naturalist David Attenborough.
Incarcerated in Wandsworth, Kate entered a prison run under the notorious ‘separate system’, whereby inmates were kept apart at all times and silence maintained. Women wore veils to conceal their identity – hence the appearance of the ghost – and men bore masks. A regime of silence and hard labour was punctuated by sermons in the chapel, in which prisoners tapped on the wooden partition between the pews in a desperate attempt to communicate. Deprived of any sense of companionship, many went insane. Condemned to die, Kate’s final days were spent in the prison infirmary, whilst outside newspaper stands screamed her infamy in the rain-soaked streets of Wandsworth Town. She rose at dawn on the day of her execution, making her way to the hanging shed accompanied by two nuns from The Sister of Compassion Convent in Hammersmith. At the stroke of nine, a bell tolled and the black flag was raised, prompting a small cheer from the crowd outside. The separate system was largely abolished in the 1898 Prison Act, and Wandsworth became a male only-institution. Yet the gallows remained in use, as 135 prisoners were hanged from 1878 to 1961. In fact, the execution apparatus was only dismantled in 1994, having been tested previously every six months whilst the death penalty remained a theoretical possibility for treason. Kate Webster remains to this day the only woman hanged at Wandsworth Prison – the chilling legacy of a southwest London slayer.

normally find beauty salons far too clinical, with their dull white walls and GP-like waiting rooms. So Bellissima in Wimbledon Village was a revelation, with its girly pink boutique surroundings and welcoming therapists. What’s great here is that you’re made to feel right at home, and every treatment concludes with tea, cake or even a glass of wine in the Bellissima Secret Garden, so the relaxation continues well after the pampering ends. As Chanelle painted my nails with O.P.I. gel nail varnish, she talked me through the treatments available at the salon. Offering everything from individual eyelash extensions to Vani-T spray tans, Bellissima can give you the works. This also includes the brand new Murad and Caci Facial, which I trialled. Launching at the end of September, this exfoliating peel goes deep into the pores to target blemishes and wrinkles, providing instant results for anti-ageing. Bellissima is the first salon in the whole of the UK to introduce this treatment, and I was in shock at how amazing my skin looked and felt so soon after it. I left feeling pampered, calm and absolutely beautiful. By Georgie Jakob

AWoman for Women BAFTA-WINNING ACTRESS AND SOUTH LONDON LOCAL JULIET AUBREY TALKS TO ABSOLUTELY ABOUT WHY SHE’S RUNNING FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS
J
Abs: On a separate note, you’ve just finished filming The White Queen for the BBC. It’s been said that the series is being axed… JA: There was never an intention to make a second series so no, it's not been axed.
uliet Aubrey has one of those faces which you immediately recognise but can’t quite place. That is until someone points out the countless programmes she’s been in and you instantly kick yourself. You see, Juliet has been on our screens for over twenty years, giving a BAFTA-winning performance in Middlemarch in the nineties, playing evil Helen Cutter in Primeval in the noughties and most recently the Countess of Warwick in the BBC’s historical drama The White Queen. Today, the south Londoner is training for a 10k run to raise awareness for Women for Women, a charity which works to support socially excluded women in war-torn countries across the world. Here she tells us why she’s getting involved… Absolutely: You’re running 10k for Women for Women International this month. Why have you decided to support this charity in particular? Juliet Aubrey: My involvement began with Women for Women about two years ago after my sister died. She had campaigned and fundraised for them for some time and had been responsible for getting a group together to bring awareness to people in the UN about violence against women, particularly in East Congo. I met some of the representatives for Women for Women at her memorial service and it felt like the right thing to do, to carry on the work that she’d left us.
Abs: Would you do another period drama? JA: Absolutely, I love learning about periods of history which I didn’t know about before. At the moment I don't have anything particular in mind, so I’ll wait and see. You know as soon as you read a script whether you like it or not.
Abs: So how have you carried on this work? JA: This month I’m running the My Step Her Stride race in Regent’s Park. It’s a 10k run to raise awareness for the charity. We’re looking to get 100 runners together, so I’m hoping people will sign up! Abs: How are you training for it? Any tips? JA: I’ve been up in Northumberland running on the beaches there, as training on sand is great for endurance. I do run normally, but it’s going to be tough as I’ve never run 10k before. I’d be happy if I did it under an hour.
Abs: How much research do you have to do for a period role? JA: As much as you want; as much as you feel comfortable doing. There’s that old saying, ‘You don’t know a person until you’ve walked a million miles in their shoes’ so I try to find out about the time the character was living in and what it was like to be alive then. Abs: You live in Herne Hill. What’s the best thing about living in south London? JA: There’s so many green spaces in south London and so many bars popping up. And Brixton is so vibrant, full of new bars and cafés, and there’s always music in the street. I’m a big south London fan. Women for Women are looking to get 100 runners in the 10k My Step Her Stride race on 6th October. To join Juliet on the run, visit womenforwomen.org.uk/ mystep to sign up.

Wedding Leopold Road provides everything needed for the perfect wedding As any mother of the bride will tell you, helping to plan your daughter’s wedding is fraught with peril. With so many different aspects to consider, choices to make and of course a budget to adhere to, one Wimbledon mother decided to simplify her options and go local. Margot, Wimbledon resident and mother of lovely bride-to-be Anna, decided that instead of visiting endless florists,
HAIR BY ESENTE
n her wedding day, a bride’s appearance includes her dress, her make-up, her flowers and her hair. Each needs to be well thought out and coordinated in order to ensure she looks her best and creates maximum impact as she walks up that aisle. However, far too often the hair aspect of a bride’s wedding day look is neglected – no woman would wait until the week before her wedding to choose her dress, why should hair be any different? Owner of Wimbledon salon Esente, Joe Milazzo, asserts that a good hairstylist requires at least one run through three months previous to the big day in order to be

caterers and stylists hoping to strike upon one who fit her criteria, she would instead turn to people and businesses she trusts. This clever strategy not only simplifies things for her, but also means Margot is able to support the local businesses in the community she loves. prepared. A mood board of the wedding’s theme and colour scheme also help the stylist to know what will work best with the overall aesthetic of the ceremony. Knowing what the dress is like is also essential; an Edwardian empire line dress needs a complementary period style whilst an intricate design won’t work with masses of tumbling curls. Esente’s attention to detail and commitment to providing hair styling of the highest standard is shown by Joe’s insistence on preparation and thoroughness. This level of expertise and dedication to excellence, as well as the fact that Esente is located on Leopold Road, makes it a vital stop for brides-to-be. • 18 Leopold Road, SW19 • 020 8946 4875 • esentehair.co.uk

FLOWERS BY BRIAN KIRKBY here is a language to flowers that transforms them from simple decoration to an impressive statement. Some are common phrases that we all understand, such as red roses for love and white lilies for funerals, however most of the subtleties are lost to us. That being the case, it is useful to have someone who is fluent in order to send the right message, and no one speaks it better than Brian Kirkby. Having worked with flowers from the age of 17, his passion and expertise have grown with the years and he has provided the flowers for corporate events, weddings and even the houses of the famous. Brian admits that weddings are his favourite due to the time spent with the bride (which ranges from six months to a year) getting to know her and ultimately making her dream of the perfect wedding come true. He also enjoys removing the stress of making decisions about the flowers for the bride and coming up with fun and inventive new ideas. Via his links with the industry cultivated over 12 years, Brian has access to the best flowers both in Holland and in England, and is able achieve both modern and more classic effects depending on taste and the general theme of the wedding.

TOP TIPS
F I NA L F L OU R I SH (HAIR)
Finishing touches can be inexpensively done. Flowers, beads or jewels in the hair – pearls are often a popular choice – or even tiny bits of silver and gold woven in or wrapped around the hair can add a classy touch.
FOOD BY AROMATICA DELICATESSEN lthough the bride herself may be too euphoric to eat on her special day, the guests certainly won’t be and after having worked up a healthy appetite during the ceremony, there is nothing worse than being presented with a dispirited sliver of salmon accompanied by some limp veg. Luckily, if chefowner Mimmo has anything to with the catering, this will never be the case. Mimmo’s Italian delicatessen Aromatica provides delicious food for various events, large and small, for businesses or for private parties. The menu which was laid on for Anna and Mark’s wedding had been carefully chosen for this particular occasion and, frankly, sounds like it was delicious. As a starter Mimmo served a tartlet with ricotta cheese and artichokes then for the main course a traditional Italian chicken dish with sausage and roast potatoes, with a vegetarian option of cannelloni with ricotta and asparagus. The mouthwatering dessert consisted of mini pastries with cream patisserie and strawberries. If the divine spread put on by Aromatica isn’t enough to inspire confidence (although it should be!) then perhaps the fact that Mimmo is the only person permitted to cook for the Pope when he visits England will. If it’s good enough for the Pontiff…

LIFE WARM NEUTRALS, TACTILE FABRICS & COLOURFUL ARTWORK CREATE EFFORTLESS CHIC IN NATALIA MIYAR’S COMPACT BATTERSEA APARTMENT
WORDS: EMMA J PAGE PHOTOGRAPHY: REBECCA NOONAN
L
ocated in a former Victorian schoolhouse on the edge of Battersea Park, Natalia Miyar’s apartment may not be big on square footage, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in style. A carefully curated collection of artwork combined with layers of texture, clever zoning and ingenious storage has transformed this simple, one-bedroom rental into an elegant home firmly stamped with the personality of its owner. It takes quite an eye to effect such a change, but
Mexican-born Natalia is used to a challenge. Head of Design at Helen Green Design, a practice set up eleven years ago by the late eponymous designer, Natalia spends her days juggling several interiors projects at a time. Trained as an architect after studying art history and architectural history at Brown University in Rhode Island, she holds a life-long fascination for homes. ‘I grew up in Mexico and Miami, and from a young age, I loved visiting period buildings that had been turned into museums,’ explains Natalia. It’s a passion that’s informed Natalia’s approach to the layout
of her current home, which she moved into two years ago from a tiny studio in Chelsea. ‘I needed a little more space, and this apartment, a stone’s throw away from the park, ticked all the boxes,’ she reflects. Mornings are spent walking Maxi, her Maltese Terrier, through the park on the way to her Chelsea offices, while weekends are for catching up with friends over drinks in the nearby Prince Albert, or at lunch in The Butcher & Grill. ‘I also love entertaining at home,’ says Natalia, ‘so I needed a space that could accommodate a large dining table.’ And part of the success of this scheme

is the delineation of the layout. An open-plan living area accommodates kitchen, sitting room and dining room, and each zone is clearly defined. ‘The table seats six, but it’s a comfortable fit because I’ve used upholstered, armless dining chairs that tuck in snugly when they’re not in use,’ explains Natalia. ‘I think the key to decorating a space like this is to use large-scale pieces, rather than smaller, multiple objects.’ So a tall but slim armoire makes a statement in the living room, large canvases pack a punch, and the elegant grey timber-topped dining table takes centre stage. ‘It’s not the easiest space to decorate because
RIGHT DINING TABLE Natural materials, such as the wooden-topped table, combined with matt golds and bronzes create a subtly glamorous effect throughout the apartment. The metal oak leaf framed mirrors are from Lots Road Auction House, while the golden vases were sourced from Aura.
LEFT SITTING ROOM Layered textures add a luxurious effect in the seating area. The leather cushion is from de Le Cuona, while a subtle geometric fabric adds a touch of modernity.

of the partial wall that conceals the kitchen, creating an L-shape,’ says Natalia. To counter this, she has created a seating zone centered around a generous button-backed ottoman, anchored by a large rug and surrounded by tactile seating including a velvet sofa, upholstered bench and tub chairs. Depth, colour and texture also help imbue the apartment with character. ‘Art helps me feel connected to my heritage and precious pieces follow me wherever I go,’ explains Natalia of the Latin American artwork that lines the walls. ‘My family is originally from Cuba, so I have pieces inspired by the political climate there. Another favourite is the colourful canvas by Chilean artist Felipe Carrión Rojas, which was a gift from my parents for my 21st birthday.’ Fabrics are also key, evident in textures that include linen, velvet, and tweeds. ‘Layering complementary but contrasting materials is a good way of adding interest to a scheme, as well as subtle splashes of colour,’ advises Natalia. ‘I change cushions and throws depending on the season and
moving into autumn, I tend to opt for richer colours such as teal, ink and petrol blue.’ But the apartment’s uncluttered look is also down to some judicious editing. Clever storage is key and Natalia has utilized every inch of space, tucking suitcases underneath her custom-made bed frame. ‘I tend to travel a lot for work and am always inspired by how other people live,’ she says, ‘so most weekends, you’ll find me moving things around the apartment, changing things up a little.’ Trips abroad, including visits to her Miami-based family, keep things fresh, but Natalia finds inspiration closer to home too. ‘I love the diversity of Battersea,’ she reflects. ‘It’s the mix of contemporary architecture and period buildings, such as the mansion blocks that surround the park, that makes it interesting.’ Heading to a café on Battersea Square or taking a detour over Chelsea Bridge while walking Maxi are favourite pursuits, but home is where her heart is. ‘As soon as I walk through the door, I feel relaxed,’ she says. ‘It’s a real reflection of who I am.’

RENOVATION D I A R I E S GEORGIE COLERIDGE COLE TAKES ABSOLUTELY ON HER JOURNEY AS SHE REFURBISHES HER WANDSWORTH HOME
The work is happening at a frighteningly fast pace. Nick Jepp, our builder from Elevation Ltd, is a man on a mission. When he is let down by a brick layer, he is so determined not to let it hold things up that he finds an alternative who will work on Saturday and has me running round to our neighbours armed with a magnum of rosé to ask if they don’t mind. Having thought a three month job would take six, I am suddenly feeling the pressure and things like furniture which felt light years away are suddenly a bit more of a priority.
GO MODERN
A
nd it seems my kitchen / dining table should have been higher up the list because when I sit down with the girl from Go Modern (gomodern.co.uk), leisurely browsing beautiful brochures of sleek, contemporary Italian furniture, I get quite a shock. Italy, I am told, is closed for August which means an additional 4 weeks on top of the already substantial 8 week time frame.
Having hunted high and low for a table that was modern enough for my gloss Wren Kitchen I can only be relieved I did not listen too carefully to my husband and wait any longer. John Lewis does a great Neptune wood table but wood is not the look I’m after. As for finding an extendable table to seat 12, it’s no easy task I tell you. I settle on the plain and simple but elegant Lima with a white glass top in the largest size and realise that some things are worth waiting for.

W
hilst I’m working on making the new house more modern than the last, I say that with the emphasis on ‘more’ rather than ‘modern’. Looking to add pieces that will last a lifetime, I soon find myself at Robert Langford (robertlangford.co.uk) on the corner of Lots Road. Robert Langford is one of our great British designers offering an extensive range of upholstered furniture, from sofas to headboards. In fact, I have seen one of these inimitable headboards at the house of a discerning friend and they don’t get any smarter. I opt for the Andrews – tall, winged and buttoned – although Robert willingly redesigns it for me with a few less buttons and suggests one of their new house fabrics. The white linen with raised stitching is stunning and I leave a very excited customer.
NORDIC STYLE
A
s I wander further down Lots Road I pop in to Nordic Style (nordicstyle. com), an old favourite since the first SheerLuxe office was on the same road back in 2007. Their classic Swedish furniture is beautiful and whilst I am not going head-to-toe scandi style, the odd piece will add a touch of femininity to our home. When we moved into the Tonsleys, the first piece of furniture I bought (naughtily before we exchanged) was one of their dressers. It’s definitely the item that TA and I have always both said we’d save in a fire. To complement our much loved desk, we decide to follow tradition and treat the house to another Nordic Style gem in the form of a Swedish Classic: the Bonde desk. Nordic Style’s pieces are finished with their trademark glaze effect and a top tip is to update old pine with their paint and glaze, and you will love it.

t the other end of Lots Road is a company that has reformed buying sofas for the middle class: sofa. com. For choice and price they just cannot be beaten and I spend an age in their showroom trying out endless styles with a very patient sales advisor in tow. After a drawn out decision process (I have a parking ticket to prove it!), I choose the Emily in a Belgian linen for the kitchen, a style with narrow arms reducing the width but still plenty of space for bottoms! To prevent the new house from looking like a furniture shop, it is so long Bluebell: their best seller and our current sofa. For the sitting room, I order a two seater and a three seater Iggy which are smaller and one of the neatest models. With modern in mind, these will both come in Elephant Matt Velvet. Also on order for the sitting room are two Emma arm-less armchairs. These gorgeous little chairs will sit side by side and be covered in Stockholm Stitch to match my curtains. And therein – alongside the price – lies the beauty of sofa.com: choose one of their fabrics, supply your own or do a bit of both.

M
y final stop on the early furniture milk round comes just before TA gets wind of the above and thankfully not a moment sooner. The Sofa & Chair Company (thesofaandchair. co.uk) is well worth a visit if you want to see some of the most exciting and beautiful furniture you are to lay eyes on. This fast-growing brand is now one of country’s leading manufacturers of luxury furniture, all manufactured in London next to their showroom by some of the most talented craftsmen you’ll find. Walking in, I feel like a child in a sweet shop, but eventually manage to drag myself away from the stunning coral light (which will sadly have to wait until I win the lottery) and focus on the task in hand of choosing an ottoman from the myriad choices on offer. Knowing I would adore them all I settle on the Chester, a modern design with simple lines and perfectly proportioned legs, in Zinc Attu Sage – a luxe and textured metallic grey fabric. And then I hotfoot it out of there before I spend a fortune…
Editor & Founder of SheerLuxe.com, Georgie Coleridge Cole has lived in Wandsworth pretty much all her life. Four years ago she and her husband (aka ‘TA’ – The Accountant) bought a three bedroom house in the popular Tonsleys adjacent to Wandsworth Town. Now a mother of two, she’s moving to the other side of East Hill and taking on a project to create their forever home. This is the diary of her journey…

VINTAGE p m eva R
FROM REINVENTING OLD VINYL RECORDS TO TURNING A TEAPOT INTO A PLANTER, BRIXTON-BASED AUTHOR ELLIE LAYCOCK GIVES ABSOLUTELY HER TOP TIPS ON HOW TO UPCYCLE
GLOBE FRUIT BOWL
02
YOU WILL NEED:
03
Vintage globes are having a resurgence in popularity at the moment and whilst country borders and names evolve, they may not be up to date as an educational aid but can still be used as a fantastic decorative object. Turn a hemisphere into a large fruit bowl or even a hanging light pendant for a touch of globetrotting glamour.
Vintage globe (preferably tin or cardboard but you can use plastic too), Hacksaw, Sandpaper, Masking tape, Old newspapers, Spray enamel paint , Vintage clear glass ashtray or similar, Hot glue gun
Clean lean the globe to remove any dust, dirt, or grease. Prepare your work area for spray painting. Mask off the globe exterior with masking tape and old newspapers. Working in a well-ventilated space, spray the interior with your spray paint. Let dry. As the paint dries it may slide down the globe, so keep applying thin layers and allowing them to dry until the interior is covered.
Mask the top edge of the glass ashtray and spray the inside with the spray paint and let dry. Repeat if necessary.
04
01
Remove the globe from any mounting. Cut the globe in half using a hacksaw, holding it carefully. For tin globes, use a metal saw blade. Use the equator as your guideline and if your globe has a “lip around the middle, cut above this so you keep it as the edge of your bowl. Sand the cut edge to get rid of any sharp edges.
RECORD COASTERS
Vinyl records, now obsolete or the preserve of specialist collectors, have been victims of the relentless march of technology and the digital age. For quite a few of us, though, they still bring out a touch of nostalgia and I fondly remember the first vinyl 7-inch single that I bought with my pocket money one Saturday back in the day! Here are a few ideas of how to upcycle these historic discs into fun and quirky homewares. YOU WILL NEED:
FOR THE COASTERS: 7-inch vinyl records (singles), Square cork coasters, about, 4 x 4in (10 x 10cm) each, Ruler, Chinagraph pencil, All-purpose glue, Strong sharp pair of long-handled scissors, Sanding block with medium to fine grade sandpaper FOR THE PLACEMATS: Colored vinyl, records (7-inch, 12-inch, or albums), Round cork placemats or trivets in a similar size to the records, All-purpose glue
Turn the ashtray upside down. Place the globe on top, taking note of where the two meet and apply hot glue to this point. Reposition the globe and press firmly down to assemble the bowl. VARIATIONS Make a pendant light shade using the other hemisphere. Decoupage the inside of the globe bowl with paper maps to continue the look.
01
Place your record down on a flat work surface with the side you want as the top of your coaster facing you. Make sure the label is
58
October_INTERIOR_Extract.indd 58

HOUSE & GARDEN straight. Place your cork coaster over the top and use the ruler to centre it. Measure from each coaster edge (in the center of one side) out to the widest point of the record and gently move the coaster around until this measurement is equal on all four sides.
02
Gently hold the coaster in place and draw round the edge with the chinagraph pencil or marker.
YOU WILL NEED: Completed tapestries (you’ll find these in frames, as cushion covers, or as abandoned projects in all kinds of junk stores, garage sales and antique fairs), Footstool, Tapestry needle and tapestry yarn, Staple gun, Marker pen (optional)
06
Use colored vinyl records for a brighter look. These look great as placemats—simply glue them to matching round cork mats or trivets. VARIATIONS If you can’t find colored vinyl, you can spray paint a normal record. Mask off the label first to protect it.
03
Using sharp scissors, cut along one side of your marked square, straight across the record and just slightly on the inside of your mark. Go carefully as you don’t want the record to split. Repeat for all four sides. Take care, as the corners will be sharp.
Make a cake stand by connecting different sized records with 2-or 3-tier cake stand parts, available from craft shops. Attach self-adhesive felt pads to the base of the cake stand for added stability. Use a 12-inch record instead of a tin and follow the steps for attaching hands from the Vintage Tin Clock project (in my book). You can add a hook on the back of the clock mechanism to hang your vinyl wall clock.
04
With a sanding block, lightly sand across one of the corners. Work gently, following the edge of the record, to form a rounded corner. You can lightly sand the straight edge too if you wish, but take care not to scratch the top surface.
01
Measure your footstool top and sides. The aim is to create a box shape from tapestry pieces that will fit snugly over your existing footstool with enough depth to fold under and staple to secure.
02
Now measure your tapestries and work out which bit you want to go where. I had a large tapestry that covered the top and short sides, so I just had to sew on 2 side panels. If you’re working with small pieces, you will need to sew them together to create pieces large enough to cover the top and sides, remembering to add some extra to fold under. Use whip stitch and a tapestry needle and matching yarn to join the pieces.
TAPESTRY FOOTSTOOL
05
Clean away the dust from the sanding. Turn the record over and apply all-purpose glue to the back. If your record has perforations in it, keep the glue away from these areas, paying special attention to any raised areas. Bring the cork coaster and the record together, align, and push firmly together. You could leave an old telephone directory or catalog on top as they dry to keep the pressure applied. Repeat to make a set.
I never really understood the point of these little footstools, usually dark in color and slightly sad-looking. They were just the kind of thing you would trip over in Grandma’s house. But, I have to say, I’ve started to warm to them now that I’ve realized their potential for a makeover. They are great for little ones to perch on or to put your feet up with a cuppa! Revamp them with kitsch tapestries that pick out colors from your décor or use scenes that make you smile, and you’ll find you’ve made a little gem that sits well in any style of room.
03
Create seams where you need to join the pieces to make a 'box'. Mark the seams on the reverse of the tapestry—I traced the line of stitches with a marker pen to make it easier to see where to stitch. It’s fairly simple to sew in a straight line on a tapestry if you follow the line of needlework on the canvas. Remember, you’re working on it inside out at this stage. Use whip stitch or, for a stronger seam, backstitch, taking a small seam allowance.

HOUSE & GARDEN lollipop sticks or even cotton bobbins or large buttons – anything that will sit across the inside of the spout and stop the wire from coming out.
03
Pull the wire back gently so that the dowling meets the inside of the spout, then take the other end of the wire and thread it through the handle. Wrap the wire around itself and trim off any excess with the wire cutters.
04
Once you have made your 'box', turn it the right way out and place it over the footstool and make sure it fits.
TEAPOT HANGING PLANTERS
05
With the tapestry in place, turn the stool upside down. Pull the middle of one edge taut, tuck under any excess, and staple to the underside of the frame (it will be out of sight once right way up) with one staple in the center. Do the same on the opposite side, pulling the tapestry taut—check that it looks OK on the top and isn’t too loose or too taut and distorted. Then repeat with the remaining two sides, adding just one staple in the center of each side. This keeps the tapestry tension even. Once you are happy, add a couple more staples either side on each edge.
06
Tuck the tapestry back on itself around the legs and staple along the underside of the four sides. Don’t staple to the legs as you might see the staples.
It’s always a sad moment when a beloved teapot becomes redundant after getting a chip or a crack, but with this simple idea you can turn it into a clever planter and give it a completely new lease of life. Build up a collection of fancy chipped china and group them together on the patio, stagger them up garden steps, or simply hang them up for a whimsical display.
04
Now simply place your plant pot in the teapot, adding some gravel in the base for drainage, if needed, or planting in potting compost.
YOU WILL NEED: Teapot with lid, Garden wire, Wire cutters, Dowling (or similar), Long nails (5in/12cm long or more), Hammer, Potting compost and plants, Gravel for drainage (optional)
05
01
Cut a length of garden wire about 40in(1m) long and thread one end down through the teapot spout so that it emerges inside the teapot.
Hammer a long nail into the wall as a hanging hook – the nail should protrude out from the wall so that the teapot will hand straight down and not lean in toward the wall. Position the wire close to the nail head. To adjust the height that the teapot hangs, skip step 3 and adjust the length of the hanging wire before fastening it off on the teapot handle once in position.
VARIATIONS Add trim around the edge for a more elaborate look or paint the legs to complement your tapestry designs. Use any type of textile that you like, from oversized chunky knits for a soft and quirky style to burlap (hessian) coffee sacks for an industrial look. You could even use leather from an old jacket you no longer wear – just follow the steps above and use glue instead of stitching to join the pieces.
02
Reach inside the teapot, take hold of the wire, and gently pull it part way through so that there is some slack to work with. Take a piece of dowling about 2in (5cm) long and wrap the wire around the center and tie it off. You could also use wooden

FOOD & TRAVEL
FROM BORDEAUX TO WIMBLEDON, ABSOLUTELY CATCHES UP WITH LOCAL CHEF BRUNO LOUBET
F
eted by food critics, renowned on the restaurant scene and appearing at Wimbledon BookFest this month, Bruno Loubet is undoubtedly London’s man of the moment. But what this means is that he’s busy – very busy – with more pressing things to do than, well, nattering with the press. Nonetheless, we find him calm, composed and utterly congenial – a superb storyteller with a thick, French accent guaranteed to make you go weak at the knees. It’s understandable then why fans were so distraught when, back in 2001, Loubet horrified loyalists by decamping to Australia to raise his family. Yet in 2009 he was back, setting up home in Wimbledon and opening his eponymous bistro in Clerkenwell’s Zetter Hotel. The venture was quickly hailed a triumph, promoting a renewed wave of adulation and further excitement about his most recent venture, Grain Store, which opened earlier this year. Putting the focus firmly on vegetables, Grain Store is the latest addition to the heart of the King’s Cross regenerated dining scene. ‘I’ve wanted to do this for many years, making the vegetable the star of the plate,’ he explains. ‘Now was the right time and the right place so it’s a bit of a dream come true.’ Having brought the likes of Jay Rayner, AA Gill and other normally ferocious food critics to their knees in admiration, is this
what Loubet sees as the future of food in the capital? And are there still boundaries left to push? ‘Obviously there is a massive movement to try new things but that’s not the business we’re in. I respect it a lot, but for me the biggest challenge at Grain Store is showing that eating less meat can be exciting, because you have to be more exciting. When veg becomes the star, you have to scratch your head a little bit more.’ The head scratching seems to have worked though, with Loubet himself acting as living proof of its health benefits as well as its commercial ones: ‘I started eating less meat for health reasons – digestion, that sort of thing. I’m getting older, you see, and your stomach has to work so hard to digest meat! So far I’ve lost 10kg and I feel so much better.’ Yet his latest book, Mange Tout, channels the other reason for Loubet’s success; his reputation built not

I LOVE TO SIT ON THE COMMON & WALK THE DOGS IN THE WOODS
on fashion, celebrity or gastronomic gimmicks, but on classic French cooking executed with masterful modern flair. A native of Bordeaux, cooking came naturally to Loubet, who grew up in the kitchen where ‘everybody was cooking; it was important. We used to grow everything and we had chickens, rabbits and pigeons. We used to go foraging – today it’s a big, fashionable thing but for me that was my childhood. We’d pick dandelions for the salad, as well as wild leeks, mushrooms and walnuts.’ It was this fantasy of recreating a rural idyll that brought Loubet back to the UK: ‘My wife missed the family and life in London. So I
said, ‘Okay, we’ll come back on one condition, which is that we buy a nice little place in the country, like a pub or an old farm. At the end of the day, I want a big garden to grow my own veg, raise pigs and chickens and live the chef’s dream.’ Of course she agreed at the time, but then we ended up in London,’ he tells us with a throaty laugh. So why then did Loubet end up in Wimbledon? ‘We used to live in Barnes and before that in Putney, so we’ve always been in this part of London. has led him to appear at Wimbledon BookFest this month, where he’ll be speaking about his new book presumably? ‘To be honest with you, I have no idea what I’m doing!’ he laughs genially. ‘I spend most of my time in the kitchen, not in the office. You’d have to ask my wife!’ What he can tell us about though is the charity work he’s doing at Wandsworth’s South Thames College. About a year ago, Loubet was asked to be a patron for the college, inspiring a new generation of potential chefs. ‘I’m asked to do a lot of charity work, but running two restaurants is tough, so I wanted to be attached to one thing and do it well instead of trying to do a bit of everything. South Thames College was interesting to me because it’s the only food college in this part of London.’ Now he’ll be splitting his time between the restaurants and helping out at the college, speaking to students, doing demonstrations, introducing other chefs and even offering stages to the best pupils. An apt choice: the top southwest London chef of today nurturing the top southwest London chefs of tomorrow. Bruno Loubet will be in conversation with Jennifer Cox at Wimbledon BookFest on Saturday 12th October at 2.30pm. Tickets are £7.50; wimbledonbookfest.org. 'Mange Tout' by Bruno Loubet is out now in hardback, £25, Ebury Press.

HARRISON’S GEORGIE LANE-GODFREY GRABS A BITE IN BALHAM BRASSERIE HARRISON’S
T
he local brasserie is a hard act to pull off. So often either the food or the atmosphere suffers, unable to compete with the restaurant of the moment in the centre of town. Yet Sam Harrison seems to have, surprisingly, triumphed where so many others have failed. Following the success of Sam’s Brasserie in Chiswick, Harrison’s has been Balham’s hottest hang out for almost seven years now, and if the number of people there when I visit is anything to go by, it still continues to be as popular as when it first opened. With a décor much like a love child between an American diner and a French bistro, the restaurant feels cool without trying too hard – metal bar, subway tiles, wooden tables, velvet studded chairs. I’m personally always a fan of any restaurant with an open kitchen – I find it reassuring to know that the chef is confident enough to expose himself to the world. The menu here is full of contemporary classics: steaks, salads, the ubiquitous cheese burger. My friend and I share the shredded duck starter served on lettuce leaves and topped with chilli (caution: portions here are big) and followed with virtuous salads. I opted for the Superfood Salad, bursting with colourful pomegranate, onion, lettuce,
carrot and grilled halloumi, whereas my friend went for the classic Salade Niçoise with salmon – a tricky dish to get right but one by which we were pleasantly surprised. The eggs were a sunny yellow and gloriously runny, and my friend assured me the fillet of salmon was cooked to perfection. This was washed down with a fruity Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and completed with banana bread and butter pudding accompanied by peanut butter ice cream for dessert. The ice-cream was the highlight of the dish, nutty, creamy and a smooth complement to the slightly stodgy pudding. Still, the service here was exceptional and the restaurant packed all night, from 6pm til closing. Probably a result of the mid-week Early Bird Menu which, at £16.50 for three courses, offers exceptionally good food at an exceptionally good price. We loved the informal, relaxed atmosphere and the fact it appealed to everyone: friends meeting for cocktails, families celebrating birthdays, couples on dates. Exactly what you’d want from a local brasserie, in fact.

LOOK Low-lighting, studded black leather booths, dark wood and exposed brick work – everything you’d expect from a seductive cocktail bar.
VIBE An underground speakeasy that is, literally, underground, the Downstairs Bar is accessed via a spiralling stone staircase from the main restaurant, giving it an exclusive, invite-only feel.
FOOD Sophisticated bar snacks, ranging from gourmet bites (giant green olives from Puglia, wild boar scotch eggs, salt and pepper squid) to more substantial dishes (lamb and chorizo burgers, shredded duck wraps, ½ pint Atlantic prawns). With a menu like this, there really is no need to move on for dinner.
DRINK One of the mind-blowing cocktails made before your eyes. Ingredients are fresh and exciting – think ‘Watermelon Mint Martinis’, ‘Pomegranate Gin’ and ‘Mandarin Genies’. We love the ‘Spice in the Dark’ – a fiery version of a Dark and Stormy thanks to the chilli twist.
VERDICT The perfect place to bring a date; once you go Downstairs, you won’t be heading back up for a while...

THE TALBOT North Yorkshire THE RESTAURANT
THE ROOM
The Talbot has 26 rooms in total, including two luxury suites. Our room, The Lambton, had an air of quaint country retreat that didn’t veer into twee or garish. The duck egg blue wallpaper was peppered with botanical illustrations, and light poured in through the feature windows with views of the hotel’s gardens. Arguably the most important feature, the bed was suitably huge with marshmallow-like quilt and pillows. Surprisingly however, the pièce de résistance was the gorgeous bathroom; larger than the average London living room with sleek marble floor, rain shower and opulent roll-top bath. It’s a quiet sort of luxury that runs throughout the Talbot, and the snug-as-a-bug drawing room – or the lounge space leading off the bar area with a beautiful skylight – just beg you to curl up in them with a good book.
One swift trip into Malton (filled to the rafters with pubs, bakeries, butchers and tea rooms) will confirm that it’s a town that’s extremely proud of its local produce, and as a result, this is the ethos of James Martin’s menus. Special mention should go to the Whitby white crab starter (absolutely delicious) and the Waterford Farm’s new season lamb served with potato, gem lettuce, local asparagus and mustard seeds. However the highlight, and this should come as no surprise to fans of Mr Martin, is dessert. To say that the croissant butter pudding soaked in whisky with white chocolate, vanilla ice cream and cinder toffee foam is one of the best desserts you’ll ever taste is no exaggeration. Top marks all round.
THE HOTEL
The journey from London to Yorkshire is a rather arduous one, but your efforts are rewarded with the welcoming sight of the Talbot Hotel, an imposing stone building on the edge of the quaint, historic town of Malton. Once a 17th century hunting lodge, the Talbot recently underwent a £4 million refurbishment in celebration of its first anniversary back in May. Today, there’s still a buzz surrounding the Talbot, largely thanks to its partnership with Malton-born chef James Martin, who has devised all the menus and is on a mission to put this small market town on Britain’s culinary map.

I
t’s a rare thing, glamour. I never really know when it is going to strike. I say this because we were staying in a log cabin with no electricity or mains water, no internet or coffee gadgets and none of the standard cues of twenty-first century luxury. The kids didn’t even have their iPads or any of their toys. Instead, they’d spent most of the previous evening running up and rolling down the mountainside until they were exhausted, and then one by one we’d fallen asleep telling stories around the fire. And it was glamorous. The Dolomites, the mountain range in Northern Italy where the cabin lies, are a pristine wilderness – think Heidi, but with Michelin starred restaurants and you’ve got it. The alpine slopes were in their summer glory, a mass of flowers and cascading streams – quite the setting – and the log cabin itself, despite lacking mod cons, was a beautiful thing crammed with other beautiful things: soft blankets, bathrobes and candles. The cabin is an outpost of The Rosa Alpina where we were staying in nearby San Cassiano. The hotel has a couple of these traditional huts, way up on the slopes, that guests are free to use. The previous

evening a porter had delivered everything we needed for a spectacular banquet: marinated steaks and chops, part-cooked aubergines and artichoke hearts for the barbecue along with endless salads and sides, a spectacular strudel and a couple of bottles of wine that I’d taken some pleasure in choosing from their extensive cellars. They’d offered to send a chef up too, but the kids all wanted to help with the cooking so I lit the torch paper on the outdoor range and twenty minutes later we were cooking in the free world: appetites sharpened by fresh air and exercise, the warmth of the fire in the twilight, not a soul for miles around. It was the feast of a lifetime. After breakfast in the morning (also brought up by the porter) we wandered down the hillside, stopping at one of the many adventure playgrounds that pepper the area. The tourist infrastructure in Alta Badia, the immediate local area, is extensive without ever intruding on the natural beauty of the mountain range (the Dolomites are a World Heritage Site). In winter, it’s a world-class ski resort but the cable cars, bars and restaurants all run throughout the summer months too, and unlike many tourist destinations, it really
works all year round. It’s paradise for kids. Children never tire of basic, elemental stuff: splashing around in mountain streams, poking fires, looking for bears. That’s why I wanted to bring them here, for a big slice of nature. It’s one of those places that would be fine even if there was no organised activity – but there is so much to do. Mountaineering was a big hit. The guide came to meet us at the hotel, dug out climbing shoes and harnesses for everybody and half an hour later I watched my nine-year old scale a vertical cliff face like a spider. Even the four year old got half way up the sheer mountainside before abseiling down. Once the kids had been up and down a couple of times I had a go – they were much better at it than I was but I’m not sure who enjoyed it the most. And that was the best thing about Alta Badia. Its delights are universal. I’m not sure who was happier in the spa at Rosa Alpina, the three year old or her mother. Rosa Alpina is a very rare thing, a spectacular hotel that has been in the same family for generations. It felt like home, largely due to the diligence of Hugo Pizzinini, the current proprietor who was always in evidence.
The family touch makes it feel small and friendly but is big enough to have all the bells and whistles – one of the restaurants has two Michelin stars and there’s a fullon spa. It’s exquisite in every detail but what really set it apart was the service. There was always somebody making a helpful face, puffing up a pillow or asking if we needed anything. We stayed in the penthouse with a key operated lift that, to the children’s endless delight, opened directly into the room. The best definition of holidays I’ve ever heard is ‘any time you put on weight’ but we walked so much we all came back looking pretty buff, despite gorging ourselves. One of the best walks was up to Scotoni – about a mile vertically and roughly three along. We were ravenous by the time we got to the restaurant hallway up the mountainside, a simple hut knocking out dazzling barbecued mixed grills, polenta and pasta – the simple wholesome food at which the Italians excel.
I don’t think it is possible to get bad food anywhere in Italy, or at least you’d have to try very hard. There are twenty Michelin Stars in Alta Badia. We only managed to tick off the two at St Hubertus, one of the restaurants at Rosa Alpina. I can only take a napkin wafting, chair-pushing-in type affair once or twice a year but it was bliss to put the kids to bed with the babysitter, walk into the hushed dining room and whisper candlelit conversations. We had the ‘chef’s special’ and it certainly was, with all the psychotic attention to detail that is historically the hallmark of haute cuisine: minuscule carrots and teeny rack of suckling pig. One of the countless courses came with six vintages of a local wine to taste, just a mouthful of each. An embarras de richesses if you will, but then that’s the area in a nutshell. We didn’t even get around to white water rafting, which was top of my list, or tandem hang gliding… Next time. 7 nights for the price of 6 at Rosa Alpina from £3840 per family, based on 2 adults and 2 children sharing two Deluxe Double Rooms, including breakfast and return flights from London Gatwick to Innsbruck with Carrier (0161 492 1357 or www.carrier.co.uk). reenwood Grange is idyllically set at the heart of Thomas Hardy country, just a brief drive from the Jurassic Coast and home to some of the UK’s most beautiful beaches. It’s a fantastic location – but even if you’re not looking to explore the area there’s ample entertainment at the Grange itself. It’s a converted farm that offers 16 holiday cottages on a spacious, green site and we stayed in one of a series of small but cosy two-bedroom cottages located around a central courtyard and backing onto a large lawn. Within seconds of arriving, our children have vanished, having sniffed out an entire play field complete with swings, trampoline and a marvellous yurt filled with toys beyond their wildest dreams. They emerge in full fancy dress to stroke the friendly Shetland ponies that live at the end of the field – all this before we’ve even found the pool. Technically this is not a family destination – it’s more of a foodie place with its own kitchen garden, smoke house and resident quails, pigs and chickens, as well as a philosophy of foraging and sourcing all its ingredients from a 25 mile radius. But of the 26 delightful bedrooms, two are family rooms and if you can bag yourself one of them, your children will be in for a treat. what a landscape it is – the forest is so beautiful that it looks almost unreal, like an Apple screensaver, as hazy shafts of sunlight find their way through the dense tree canopy, all intense shades of brown and green. The site is owned by the Forestry Commission and characterised by a nature-loving philosophy, so while the facilities in our cabin are luxe and high tech (a hot tub, underfloor heating, audio-visual technology so fancy it defeated us… did we mention the hot tub?), eco credentials remain intact via recycling and forest ranger-led nature walks. Our urban children switch happily between den-building and the ever-ready hot tub while we fail to get used to the extreme beauty of the view from our terrace. While many of the rides are truly memorable, such as the recently revamped fairy tale brook, the amazing submarine ride with real (not just Lego) fish and the all-new Duplo splash safari, so, unfortunately, are the queues. WHY ARE SO MANY OF OUR LEADING PRIVATE SCHOOLS DROPPING A-LEVELS FOR INTERNATIONAL ALTERNATIVES? AMANDA CONSTANCE INVESTIGATES QIUYING LAI
I
t hasn’t been a good summer for Michael Gove. The education secretary has already faced a surge of criticism over his reforms, but now some of our most elite private schools are dumping A-levels for an international alternative in protest at the changes. During the summer, members of the Headmaster’s and Headmistress’s Conference (HMC) – which represents top private schools such as Eton, Harrow and Winchester – spoke out against the ‘huge gamble’ Gove was taking with A-level reform. From 2015, AS-levels are to be separated from full A-levels to form a qualification in their own right. In England, new linear A-levels where all assessment takes place at the end of two year courses will replace the modular system, in an effort to end the constant treadmill of exams and generate a ‘revival of the art of deep thought’. But many don’t agree. Andrew Grant, a former HMC chair and head of St Albans School, Hertfordshire, said he was concerned that Mr Gove was ‘throwing the baby out with the bathwater’ by de-coupling AS and A levels and said he was looking for alternatives for his school: ‘We at St Albans School are looking very, very seriously at
International A-levels because we feel there is a tremendous value in the feedback provided by AS levels at the halfway point.’ In total 72 schools entered pupils for International A-levels this summer, but it is believed numbers could soar in coming years. However, it isn’t just the international A-levels that are being used by private schools. More pupils are taking the Cambridge Pre-U, which is seen as a return to traditional, rigorous A-level study, and the International Baccalaureate diploma is increasingly popular. 99 British schools have pupils taking the Pre-U this year and 188 offer the IB. And it isn’t just A-levels. Last month it was revealed that almost 2,700 secondary schools now offer the International
GCSE amid fears over falling standards and questionable reforms planned for 2015. This huge shift towards IGCSEs follows a Coalition decision to scrap rules imposed under Labour that effectively barred state schools in England from offering them as an alternative qualification. Today, it is believed that around 6/10 state and private schools across the UK are teaching the course in at least one subject. Other independent schools such as Sevenoaks in Kent and Bedales in Hampshire are going a step further by devising their own in-house alternatives to GCSEs. So are private schools just opting out of Gove’s reforms? Despite the Coalition’s insistance that it is addressing major concerns over standards,
Ed Elliott, head of The Perse School, Cambridge, said many schools were unwilling to wait for the reforms or risk them being reversed by a future Labour administration. ‘The Perse does not want to be part of a game of political ping pong which will destabilise the exam system to the disadvantage of students,’ he explains. ‘By sitting international qualifications we can take a ‘wait and see’ approach to UK domestic exam reform, whilst ensuring our pupils benefit from studying proven, rigorous and internationally recognised qualifications free from political interference.’
Top of the class
K
ing’s College School, Wimbledon, is celebrating record IB results this year, with over 51% of all grades being at Level 7 – the equivalent of A* at A Level. 12 King’s students also achieved the extraordinary score of 45/45, which fewer than 100 IB candidates in the whole world achieve each year, whilst 55 received prestigious Oxbridge offers. Congratulations KCS! kcs.org.uk

IN THEIR OWN
WORDS KEVIN SHAW
Sales Director of Spicerhaart Photography: Rebecca Noonan After graduating from Bristol University with an Economics and Politics degree I took the obvious route and became an accountant with Cooper and Lybrand. After a short time, I felt it wasn’t the path I truly wanted to take, so started looking for an alternative career. I was interviewed by Michael Robson (now the CEO of Andrews), was offered a job and never looked back. I started out as a Negotiator with Andrews in the Bath branch in 1985 and was promoted up to Branch Manager. We were the top profit making office in the company and this resulted in my subsequent promotion to Area Director in Surrey in 1990. Nearly a decade later, I joined Spicerhaart. The group as a whole has approximately 180 offices across all of our brands, of which 120 are haart offices, many of them within the M25. We are very excited about our new branch openings in Worcester Park on 9 September and Twickenham later in the year. I have a lot of autonomy from the company and the top priority of my role is to build the brand and deliver profit. Marketing, sales management, recruitment, training, cost control, delivery of FS business, legal and New Homes are all integral parts of the job. It is very important to me to be fully ‘tuned in’ to the housing market and to pick up on trends very quickly. Fortunately, we have very low staff turnover at management level, so I have a high calibre and experienced team working alongside me. One thing I love about the job is that no two days are the same. I work with
great people both in branch and at board level in order to tackle problems creatively as they arise. The variety within my role really makes the whole job hugely enjoyable. South London as a whole is enjoying a renaissance and I think this is due to a variety of factors. First off, it boasts excellent transport links and many good schools. This combined with an attractive, safe environment in which to socialise is appealing to would-be buyers. When you study South London you realise it really is a series of ‘villages’, each with their own unique feel and identity. We strive to get involved with a lot of local sponsorship in our drive to be the ‘haart of the Community’. Outside of work, I have a share in a racehorse and am a passionate Man City fan. I am also on the board of our charity, Magic Moments, which was launched in 1998. We founded Magic Moments to help both children who suffer from life limiting illnesses and their families. To date we’ve raised in excess of £600,000. I fundraise personally and also rally the staff to do likewise in order to provide ‘magic moments’ for children and young people up to the age of 19. Other than that, I enjoy going to Italy on holiday every year with my family and, most importantly of all, love walking my trusty cockerpoo Poppy!

Clifford Harvey
Debunking the property myth George Franks
Sales Director at Douglas & Gordon 020 7924 2000; douglasandgordon.com
I WANT to put a popular misconception to rest. Yes, the London housing market is enjoying a mini boom. Yes, most properties that come onto the market at a relatively sensible asking price will go under offer extremely quickly. Yes, on average we have over 15 buyers for every property currently on our books. Yes, the supply of property coming onto the market has shrunk by nearly a third year on year. However, if you talk to any estate agent who is working in the London market at present, they will all confirm that once a property is under offer, pushing it through to exchange has never been harder. On average, at the moment here at Douglas & Gordon, we are nearly running at 12 weeks from agreeing to exchanging a property. How can this be? The fact is that everybody in this industry seems to be over worked.
Surveyors are apparently being flown down from Scotland to help with the valuations, mortgage brokers and building societies have found themselves completely understaffed and unable to deal with the current flow. Solicitors are swamped, and not only that, they are getting increasingly pernickety with contracts and leases, therefore asking questions that probably would never have been asked three or four years ago. This all takes time. Vendors excited about going under offer quickly are then finding it impossible to find the house of their dreams at the other end. Damp companies, structural surveyors, not to mention the local councils with their searches, are all beginning to crack under the pressure. So next time you question an estate agent about their fees, thinking in the back of your mind that your property will sell quickly, I am afraid in this market an estate agent really earns his money once the property has gone under offer. Chivvying, chasing, persuading, and not to mention sometimes cajoling all these different people so that an exchange can happen quickly, is no mean feat. Broking a sale between so many advisers is getting harder and harder.
Director at aspire, Balham 020 8673 6111; aspire.co.uk
The chicken or the egg? Most people sell their current home at the same time as buying a new one, forming a property chain. With the Balham property market exceptionally busy for this time of year and demand outstripping supply, Clifford Harvey of aspire’s Balham office looks at both pros and cons of selling before buying: • Sellers prefer buyers with cash in the bank (and/or a pre-approved mortgage) rather than entering a chain, where their sale is dependent upon finding a buyer. • Being gazumped is less likely. Providing the offer is decent, the buyer is unlikely to take another if it means entering a chain. • You remain in control of the sale of your house – because you won’t need to make a quick sale, you will not be pressurised into selling cheaply. • You may get a better price if you find a seller who is keen to move quickly. But: • If you sell first, you may have to rent for a time, which can prove costly. • If prices are rising fast, by the time you’ve sold your house and paid for rent a new house may be less affordable.
Putney: A happy blend of rural and urban living OLIVER WHITEHEAD, OWNER OF OPORTFOLIO, DISCUSSES THE PLEASURES OF PUTNEY LIVING... With fast transport links to the centre of London and easy access to rural England, Putney has long been home to many commuters and young families. What makes it such an attractive spot to raise a family is that most properties in the area feature a rear garden and typically have larger house sizes than the London average. For those looking for a happy blend of rural and urban life, Putney makes a great choice; whether it be for a permanent or part time abode. You have all the benefits of great shops and restaurants as well as living in close proximity to Putney Common, Richmond, Wandsworth and Wimbledon Parks. All this is right on your doorstep and still within a twenty minute tube ride to Central London. Living so close to the river also has its benefits. For over a century, Putney has been a top rowing spot and plays host to the highly renowned University boat race between Oxford and Cambridge.
What is less commonly known is that Putney also has one of the lowest council tax costs in London. The lowest being £457.18, with nearby Kingston upon Thames charging £1121.36. The area is also a highly attractive investment option, with the average terraced house price up a whopping 158.4% in the last decade and showing no sign of abating amid the current
housing market boom. Whether you’re a busy family in search of an accessible pied à terre or a buy to let investor weighing up your options, Putney makes a great choice, with something to please everyone. So when you’ve found your ideal Putney, abode come in and see us and we can show you how to make it happen!

Battersea Park’s Peace Pagoda
News Jimmy Carr
Sales Manager at Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward, Battersea Park
Battersea Park has seen an incredible rise in property values over the last six months, with property growth having risen in excess of 25% year on year. The area is popular area among professionals who favour its close proximity to Kings Road and Sloane Square and it also appeals to families with young children who enjoy the lovely green open spaces (Battersea Park), cafes, local deli’s and schools. We’ve noticed consistently high levels of purchasers and there are noticeably low levels of stock which has resulted in fierce competition and rapid price increases. For example, this time
last year, we were marketing a two bedroom cottage on the Shaftsbury Estate for £600,000; presently a similar property would achieve in excess of £750,000. A surge of cash rich buyers desperate to invest in bricks and mortar has been largely responsible as they feel property offers a better return on their savings than money sitting in the bank, earning little or no interest. As a result, many buy-tolet investors have discerned that even relatively low rental yields are better than nothing and the potential for capital growth is very appealing. 020 3280 3503; kfh.co.uk

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT... Hudson’s on the Lower Richmond Road has a cult following of breakfast addicts, they serve a great range of delicious breakfasts until 12pm on the weekends (try the one-pan breakfast!)
BEST KEPT SECRET... The recently expanded River Bus service runs weekday commuter hours. It’s a brilliant way to get into town while enjoying the river views, dropping Putney residents at Embankment & Blackfriars.
FINEST COCKTAIL... With the arrival of four brand new cocktails bars this year so far it’s a tough choice. The Toyshop has to be the most innovative with cocktails such as the ‘Gee-haw whammy diddle fizz’.
STYLISH BOUTIQUE... A popular choice with Putney’s husbands is the unique Beer Boutique on Upper Richmond Road, with craft beers from all over the world it’s a must for BBQs and parties.
A LOST HOUR... Sat in the garden at The Telegraph pub in the midst of tranquil Putney Heath. Whilst watching the cricket on the green you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re a million miles from London.
AN EXCEPTIONAL PROPERTY... Nepean Street, SW15. An exceptional semi detached five double bedroom house that has just been brilliantly refurbished by an interior designer and an architect. £1,850,000 Freehold.

Meet the Team 1. What do you like about the area you work in? I love Southfields’ village vibe. Although London is on our door step, and very accessible by the excellent road and rail networks, it retains a real feeling of community with good schools and excellent recreational facilities. Southfield’s is a big draw for young families and professionals alike. 2. What do you like to do in your free time? I’m very partial to a game of golf, a little too keen my wife may say. The ability to be able to turn my phone off and walk around the course for four hours enables me to recharge my batteries. 3. Why John D Wood & Co. and why Sales? I’ve been in the estate agency business for some 18 years and have always enjoyed the different people and properties each day provides. John D Wood & Co. allows me with the ability to work in an industry I love whilst providing the high level of professionalism and integrity the

company has been associated with for over 140 years. 4. If you weren’t an estate agent what would you be? A professional golfer, not with my swing! I also always liked the idea of being an architect which is probably another reason why I love working with property. 5. How long have you been with John D Wood & Co.? Have you always been interested in property? I started with John D Wood & Co. in January this year having worked in the local area for some six years. I have always been interested in property. My keen eye for detail and genuine interest in architecture, each property and every day brings something new. 020 8870 8811; johndwood.co.uk

Clapham and Balham continue to be extremely popular and there are many more people looking to buy here than there are properties for sale. This is leading to rising prices as property hunters compete to buy those properties on the market. John D Wood & Co. has just achieved a record price for an immaculately refurbished five bedroom house on Cathles Road, SW12 where we broke through the £1m price

barrier. At the moment highest demand is for two bedroom flats under £500,000 and large family houses. Many of our purchasers are downsizers and investors buying without a mortgage and first time buyers currently renting in the area wanting to purchase their first home. With interest rates currently at 0.5% I anticipate demand continuing.

A fresh face for John Thorogood A facelift is hardly the first thing that comes to mind when reaching the age of 21. But at John Thorogood, that’s exactly what they decided to have. And we’re not talking about a quick nip here and tuck there. No, as many of their clients will tell you, when they do something, they like to do it properly. So they’ve gone for the full body makeover: fresh branding, sleek state-of-the-art office and more innovations to follow. The first stage
of their ‘procedure’ was giving their boards a lift: they’ve been completely re-designed – many of you will have already noticed them liberally dotted around the Commons. And after stage two, their prominent Northcote Road office is now out of surgery after total refurbishment which has been drawing curious looks over the last few weeks. All the excess pine has been cut out – to be replaced with pearly white new desks; the carpet has been snipped away and beautiful pram-
friendly(!) oak flooring inserted. They’ve even implanted LED lightboxes to display your property in the best possible light, and fully interactive screens to ensure they’re open 24 hours a day. And now that the touch-ups are complete, you can stand back and admire the trim, streamlined finished result – or, better still, pop in for a coffee and see it in action. We think John Thorogood’s new eye-catching premises are a great way to complement their
reputation for stand-out personal service, and will keep up their reputation as one of the most talkedabout agents between the commons. Their office may now look like it’s in the first flush of youth again, but behind the fresh veneer still sits the most experienced and knowledgeable team to whom you could entrust the sale of your home. Sales Manager of Jacksons, Battersea 020 7924 2255; jacksonsestateagents.com.
Most satisfying transaction... It was my first ever sale, a beautiful duplex apartment overlooking a park. A lovely young couple with a baby on the way were buying it as their first home. To this day it was the most stressful transaction I’ve ever had to manage, with the arrival of a baby due and around twenty five links in the chain! Practically every obstacle possible came up. The day of completion was one of my proudest, I had been a massive part of making it happen and just in time for the baby’s arrival! There were hugs, kisses and flowers all round.
in Surrey. The attention to detail was second to none. It had taken the vendors quite literally years to get it just right. We had a fantastic open day, the team were buzzing as we’d really bought into the property and almost loved it as much as the current owners. It was something truly special! The property I’d most like on my books is... A beautiful house on Lavender Gardens in Battersea, I always look at it as I walk past. It’s an enormous double fronted house, the current owners I think have just finished refurbishing it. At probably 3,500 square feet I can imagine its quite spectacular! Most unusual interior...
Most interesting property I’ve been involved with... It was a run down church, which had been beautifully converted into a family home
Was an unusual Art Deco house, it was the only one left on the street. In keeping with its style, the owners had kitted it out with 40’s/50’s everything. Retro to say the least! It was like going into a time warp! It made me smile every time I walked through the door. I never thought I’d see...
A chandelier in a bathroom! I was lucky enough to witness the refurbishment of an enormous mansion house. It’s the grandest property I’ve ever seen. The master bedroom had an en-suite that most people would be more than happy with as their bedroom! It was absolutely stunning with a fabulous fireplace, roll top bath in the centre and a chandelier above.
Booming Battersea Market Duncan Blakelock Lettings Manager at Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward’s Battersea branch 020 7228 8688; kfh.co.uk
THE LETTINGS market in Battersea has remained exceptionally competitive throughout 2013. We’ve seen an influx of buy-to-let landlords along with a marked increase in the number of owner occupier landlords who despite needing to move, have kept hold of their property and rented it out. As a result, there has been a significant
rise in the number of good quality properties available. However, with a high level of tenant activity and a greater choice available to them, prices have stagnated somewhat. We’ve therefore noticed a slight fall in prices in the region of around 5% with many tenants viewing far more properties before eventually committing.
MARTIN & CO Chelsea & Riverside celebrated the opening of their new office last month, and hosted a launch party at their new premises in Battersea Reach, SW18. Guests included landlords, tenants & other local agents. Michael van de Vyver, Director, was delighted with the success of the event: “After 10 years in the business it is fantastic to add this office to our current one in Chelsea. We hope our presence will consolidate our status as the leading agent for Battersea Reach. The development has consistently exceeded expectation for investors & home owners alike, it’s incredibly well maintained with great facilities onsite. “ 0207 585 0504; martincoriverside.co.uk
James Castleman Sales Manager at Featherstone Leigh, Battersea 020 7228 2278; featherstoneleigh.co.uk
WE’VE had an extremely busy few months here in the Battersea office, with properties selling very quickly, often within days of coming onto the market. We recently sold a property at the asking price in a prime Clapham location within 2 days of launching it on the Featherstone Leigh website, clearly illustrating the improving economy. With low interest rates still available, I expect the current levels of sales activity to continue, and perhaps even increase, as we enter the notoriously busy autumn period. The lettings department is equally busy, with properties letting quickly, no doubt due to the record number of applicants we currently have looking for properties in the area.

O
ver the course of 2013, the property market, and in particular the new homes sector, has gone from strength to strength. The lack of available second hand homes coupled with an increased determination from many first time buyers to take advantage of low interest rates at a time when major lenders have relaxed their deposit requirements and lending criteria. This, combined with support from the government in the ‘help to buy schemes’
has pushed developers in South West London to accelerate their building programmes. At Lauristons, our new homes sites are selling many, if not all, of the units off plan over 12 months in advance of completion. In contrast to the expectation of the developers, a large proportion are selling to first time buyers or those who have decided to re-climb the housing ladder rather than investor or speculator buyers. The specialist team at Lauristons are dedicated to handling new homes transactions are able to provide insightful advice on all aspects of purchasing, selling or investing in the range of new homes products available. WIMBLEDON WARRIORS RFC Lauristons are very pleased to announce that they are now supporting the Old Wimbledonian RFC Warriors; the mini and junior teams at Old Wimbledonians with age groups ranging from under 5’s to under 15’s, all coached and managed by volunteers found amongst parents of the current and former players. OWRFC has a long and very successful playing tradition that dates back to the 1920’s, and the excellent facilities
at their Coombe Lane ground offer the space and clubhouse for children, and parents, to really get the most enjoyment from their rugby. Lauristons look forward to working with the club throughout the 2013/14 season and beyond. We will be posting regular updates on the boys’ progress during the season on our website. wimbledonian-warriors.com
he BBFC tournament season came to an exhilarating end at Furngate and Abbey Rangers on the weekend of July 6th/7th. On Saturday 6th, both our U9 Colts and U11 Eagles, with outstanding performances, won the Furngate Tournament, whilst our U15s finished as Runners Up. On Sunday 7th, our one team at the Abbey Rangers Tournament, U10 Colts, won the Plate Competition, whilst back at Furngate, as Andy
Murray produced the goods at Wimbledon, our U12 Colts and U12 Eagles, blitzed the group stage and knockouts to make it an all BBFC final, as it was last year. The U12 Colts won the final, with clinical efficiency, to lift the tournament trophy. Our U10 Eagles also made the final, which went to extra time but, having won three tournaments in a row, this time they had to settle for Runners Up.
WARRIORS VICTORIOUS
A
t the end of the 2012/2013, Warriors’ Under 12’s capped a successful season in fitting style by claiming the top two places at the Chichester festival. Having drafted in a handful of extra players they were able to field two sides, the Trojans and the Titans, who dominated the tournament. Ultimately the Titans’ one hundred percent record was enough to land the title, without conceding a try which sits alongside festival victories in the mud of Mitcham and under the floodlights at Old Ruts. But given that coach Roger Brosch decreed that the two Old Wimbledonian teams shouldn’t play each other on the hard pitches of the south coast, the glory could be shared among all the Warriors players. “It was the best way possible for us to finish a great season,”
said Head Coach Roger Brosch. “It showed just how much the boys have learned and how far they have come as a team. Everyone was so committed and they should all be very proud of themselves.” That was the message the coaches conveyed to the players who now have the ideal platform to launch themselves into the 15 aside youth leagues next season.

The Exhibit is a cinema/bar/diner in Balham. This polymath of a venue offers a cool bar and American style diner with a fantastic terrace and garden, as well as a boutique cinema.
There is no better place than Wimbledon Common with over 1,100 acres to explore, ride bikes, feed the ducks and visit the Windmill. Best of all, it’s open all day, everyday.
My favourite salon in the area is Sean Hanna, who provide a great service, and I’d also recommend The House of Yoga, a contemporary modern day studio located on Upper Richmond Road.

Why hasn’t my house sold?
T
he smell of freshly baked bread, the old clichéd tip for making a great first time impression on potential buyers! But for those of you out there who are less Mary Berry inclined there are some very simple ways of making your property more attractive if your house has been on the market for a while. First impressions count and I don’t mean first impressions as you open the door. Curb appeal is hugely important. Make sure your windows are washed, your doorstep swept and any outdoor space neat and tidy. If your neighbouring houses have unkempt appearances it is definitely worth asking whether you could help tidy them up as potential buyers aren’t only buying your house but into the street as a whole. It may seem like stating the obvious but the single most effective you can do is have a clean and tidy house for all viewings. Whilst it can be difficult with families and busy lives, having a clean and tidy house allows buyers to see the property at its best and will leave them with positive feelings.

s a landlord, it is all too common a mistake when insuring your property to fall into the trap of not obtaining the correct insurance to suit your needs. Most ‘domestic’ insurance policies are unsuitable for letting, and in the worst cases, can be invalid altogether. For this reason, Andrews strongly recommend that both landlords and tenants take out appropriate specialist insurance. For landlords, this means a buildings and contents product suited to their new circumstances – the property effectively becomes a business premises with all the associated risks! They should also obtain a LERG (Legal Expenses and Rent Guarantee) product. Tenants often assume that the landlord’s insurance will be sufficient to cover their goods – it won’t be! Tenants should insure their own belongings, and should also ensure that their policy also covers them for accidental damages to the Landlord’s property/contents. Make sure an insurance company underwrites your policy as you could be purchasing a warranty rather than an insurance policy, which is an inferior product. A lot of rent guarantees are actually warranties and not insurance. A lot of ‘standard’ policies only cover a few thousand pounds, which in most cases is not enough to cover most belongings in a property. As such, you should always carry out a comprehensive list of the value of your items and cover them accordingly.
