Editor’s

LETTER A

rt is one of those subjects that people always seem to form a strong opinion on. More so now perhaps than ever, given the taste and boundaries that contemporary artists continue to push. In 2003, the anarchistic Stuckists claimed that ‘a dead shark isn’t art’ in their tongue-in-cheek protest at ‘conceptual art’, in particular Damien Hirst’s tiger shark in formaldehyde sculpture, the ludicrously titled ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’. There are many who would agree with the ethos of Stuckism in their disdain of the likes of Hirst, but it’s difficult to deny the significance and impact that art has on our culture. The current retrospective of the sculptor David Nash at Kew Gardens is a unique opportunity to explore the oeuvre of a seminal artist in a venue that befits his passion for nature and continued sustainable use of organic material. But don’t expect anything of the pretentious, conceited artist cliché in our interview on page 32. I enjoyed picking the brains of the man behind the curious sculptures dotted around the gardens. Whether they’re to your taste or not, the works are intriguing and strangely beautiful, and they add another level of entertainment and interaction to the gardens. And what better time to enjoy the gardens than in March, the beginning of spring, when the country finally begins to shed the doom and gloom of the long winter months. Continuing with an artistic theme, we’ve rounded up the top three arty escapes in Europe in our travel section. Be inspired to get the creative juices flowing with stunning locations and glorious climates. Closer to home, we’ve also put together a guide of the best local establishments to enjoy that quintessentially British idiosyncrasy; afternoon tea. Go on, treat yourself – we deserve it after the seemingly never-ending winter. I hope you enjoy this issue. See you next month.

From Russia with Love

PHOTO ©SIM CANETTY-CLARKE

Chris Baldacci talks to Kasper Holten, Director of the Royal Opera House’s new production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin What is it about Eugene Onegin that drew you to tell this story? It’s a very moving piece and it’s an opera which is unique. Many operas are about princes and kings or gods and far away stories, but Onegin has a very immediate emotional identification. It’s about things we all go through in life. Falling in love, making yourself vulnerable, getting rejected, friendships breaking-up and growing up. I think it’s very human, and it’s very easy to identify with. In a way that makes it very attractive for the cinema season. We’re really trying to create complex characters with a lot of detail, which I hope will communicate well in the theatre but also on the screen. It’s incredibly passionate music but being passionate has a wonderful sadness and melancholy, a sense already from the beginning of impending loss and so there’s something very human about it. Is your interpretation closer to the Pushkin poem or the Tchaikovsky opera? We are staging the Tchaikovsky opera but it has been a great inspiration to go back to the Pushkin. Actually, the difference is not big in that Tchaikovsky, unlike many other composers when they set a novel or a drama that already exists, didn’t ask somebody to re-write it. He actually took most of the words straight out of Pushkin. So a lot of

the words you hear in the opera are actually Pushkin’s words and that makes it also very unique. Its almost like a Chekhovian play or something. Its been a great inspiration to go back and read the Pushkin. You find out the background to the characters, you find out a lot more about their motivations, which has been very useful. So I hope we’ve been staging the Tchaikovsky but just as Tchaikovsky had, with a strong inspiration from Pushkin’s added colour to the characters. How do you personally view Eugene as a character? He’s not exactly the nicest chap in the world. Well exactly. We have often seen him portrayed as villainous and a ruthless, careless figure. When you read the Pushkin, it’s very clever and he is much more complex. In a way he is just young and I think the piece is much more interesting when you see that it’s not just Tatyana being good and Eugene being bad. Its much more complex than that. Tatyana also misses opportunities and when Eugene rejects her, he is trying to do the right thing because he has broken hearts before and is afraid the he’s not worth loving. So, when he grows up and finds out that the Earl loves her and has always loved her, its not just an obsession thing. For me it’s really a true love story, its about two souls meeting. Two soul mates.

After you ran the Danish Opera House, you have been quoted as saying that you would never run another House again. How did the Royal Opera House entice you in? Well, when you get a call from the Royal Opera House... I had promised myself I wouldn’t take another House right now and I would enjoy life and be a freelance director, but when I got an offer from Covent Garden it was just a oneof-a-kind phone call where you just can’t say no. It’s always been, for me, the most attractive opera house in the world. Both because it is in London, which is a city that I dearly love and that this House has a fantastic tradition and great artists working here. So, although I had promised myself, and my friends do tease me and say ‘well, you did say that nothing would make you change your mind’ – this was just an offer that was too good to refuse. Do you have free reign over the productions or is there already a program set in place? First of all when you take over an Opera House, the program is in place far ahead. There are already now decisions that are starting to be felt in the repertory that I was part of making, for instance Eugene Onegin. This program will run until 2016 and I am here until 2018. The Curzon Cinema will be showing Eugene Onegin on 20 February at 19:15, 3 Water Lane, Richmond, TW9; curzoncinemas.com 17

An Education

Absolutely takes a look at the new Kew House School, opening its doors in September this year

W

hat do you do if you run two highly successful and oversubscribed preparatory schools and the parents of your pupils urge you to open a co-educational secondary school to continue their children’s education up to the age of 18? For Maria Gardener of London Preparatory Schools Ltd, which runs Ravenscourt Park and Kew Green Prep Schools, the answer was clear – do as they asked. So it is that, in September 2013, a new independent secondary school will open in west London. It is called Kew House School.

WHAT:

The school promises to be pioneering and modern, while retaining the best of the traditional values demonstrated at the two preparatory schools, founded in 1991 and 2004. Key to its success will be a rich and broad curriculum,

WHERE?

taught in a relatively small, nurturing learning environment where individual talents are identified and developed. In the school’s first year, places will be available in Years 7, 8 and 9. Through an innovative selection process, KHS is seeking to attract intelligent pupils with a confident sense of identity and an original approach to learning, problem solving and creativity. The result will be a school that respects each student as a valuable individual, and works in partnership with pupils and parents to promote each pupil’s success, welfare and happiness: in short, Kew House School.

Kew House School is a simple redbrick building incorporating modern, open-plan interior design with state-of-the-art facilities. There’s ample outdoor space and the school is in close proximity to Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre and close to Kew Bridge and the River Thames. For more information, please visit kewhouseschool.com

WILD THING

Oilily have taken inspiration from fairy tale magic and intrepid travellers for their gorgeous new Once Upon a Time collection. It’ s hard to believe that when the Dutch clothing company was founded back in 1963, the staple colour swatch consisted of grey, white and black. Realising that this didn’t appeal to children, they started to introduce vibrant colours, patterns and fabric and have never looked back. Taschen’s beautiful new collection of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm comes as a tactile cloth-bound hardback (£24.99) as well as an interactive e-book form as an iPad app (£4.99, iTunes). Both feature charming vintage illustrations from the 1820s to the 1950s. taschen.com

When Kate Pietrasik had her baby daughter, she was shocked by the gender stereotyping in children’s clothing so she founded Tootsa MacGinty, a whimsical line of unisex kids clothing incorporating stripes, cute animal motifs and bright colours. We love the philosophy and we love the new Life’s a Beach collection, in association with Surfers Against Sewage, which is a rustic homage to being beside the seaside. COMEDY CENTRAL

Red Nose Day, the fundraising extravaganza with a serious sense of humour is back on 15 March, 25 years since it first launched. Along with the usual silly commemorative souvenirs and events, a host of celebs have nominated themselves for a special one-off The Great British Bake-Off, and the more adventurous are taking part in a daredevil water challenge on the Zambezi river. To raise money without any risk of injury, don a trademark red nose which, this year, is immortalised in three funky dinosaur designs. How did the idea for AlexAndAlexa first come about? My wife and I have two young boys, and while we loved dressing them in stylish, fun clothes, we dreaded shopping days in London on busy weekends with the children. As regular online shoppers for ourselves, in 2007 we identified a gap in the market for a premium children’s online store, and the AlexandAlexa brand was born! We wanted to give fellow parents access to the world’s best kids brands without having to hit a high street. How do you think online shopping has shaped the way parents can buy for their children? It’s definitely made life a lot easier, but online shopping has also given parents access to not only the huge global designer brands, but emerging and independent labels for kids which would have previously only been purchased in their home countries. Some of the most popular brands at AlexandAlexa come from Scandinavia, Holland, Canada, even as far afield as Australia. Do you find that parents shopping for their children reflect the former or the latter’s personal style? I personally feel that every child is different, as whilst it’s easy for me to say that as children get older, they become more style conscious, for my boys it’s my younger six-year-old who is much more style aware than my older eight-year-old. It really depends on the strength of personality and maturity of the children. In our family, we have a broad spectrum of style and our boys pick what they like within that. Are there any boutiques for children’s clothes or toys you’d especially recommend in London? That’s a tricky one, as Alexa and I are busy parents so we tend to do most of our shopping online. That’s one of the main

reasons we set up our store, because the very thought of taking our two young boys, in the car, with the stress of parking, and business of central London, just fills me with dread! Personally, I’ve always been a fan of Selfridges, so if there’s one store where I’d buy everything (for myself included), then that would be it. What do you look for most in children’s clothes? It would be a combination of function plus style and quality. I’m generally a major fan of more technical clothes – Snow jackets, GEOX breatheable shoes, or North Sails sailing fleeces – and luxury preppy brands like D&G, Hackett and Scotch & Soda. With Global Kids Fashion Week rapidly approaching, can you tell us a bit more about the process behind organising this and what we can expect? AlexandAlexa is the major sponsor and organiser of the event, alongside our additional partners the V&A Museum of Childhood and charity Kids Company. It’s a huge global event and we have just confirmed the official schedule, including a designer runway shows for media and our public fashion show in aid of the charity. This debut event will shine the spotlight on children’s style on 19 and 20 March in the very stylish location of the Freemason’s Hall in Holborn, shortly after the international runway show circuit. Global Kids Fashion week will preview autumn-winter collections from established fashion houses and London labels, as well as emerging up-and-coming designers. 23

ALEX’S TOP PICKS

Alex with sons Luca and Raphael

Over the last six months our brand and PR teams have been working hard to secure the designers on board, implement global PR campaigns around the event, and build relationships with our key partners. As AlexandAlexa has been at the forefront of children’s fashion for five years, this is an event concept we have been working on for some time and we’re over the moon to be pioneering the first event of its kind.

Do you have any recommendations for fun days out for children in London? We live close to Richmond, and nothing beats taking the kids to see the wonders of Richmond Park. Where else in the world, can you see wild deer roaming freely, have a picnic in your own forest, or go sledging down a perfect snow filled hill, all within the capital city! How do you maintain a child’s childhood for as long as possible? Well, I start with lots of generous love and affection, telling my boys how much I love them, and making them feel special and loved. With that, you get affection, respect, and trust back. How they dress is never at the front end of that, it’s just something that happens on the way.

Who do you think are the best-dressed kids in the world? I think the Beckham’s sons are really well dressed. Whether they are attending a serious event or need to dress down for sport, they are always very tastefully styled.

‘Nothing beats taking the kids to see the wonders of Richmond

As an extremely busy husband and wife team, what do you do to relax and enjoy quality time outside work? Alexa and I always make sure we are back for dinner together, and our weekends together are precious. Of course, it’s a busy family, with two gregarious boys under eight years old, but we love the buzz of a busy house and have a social and open door attitude to friends and family. Nine PM most nights we stretch out on the sofa and watch a movie together with a secret snack (dark chocolate for me!)

Have you got any new brands launching on the site next season that you are especially excited about? We are proud to be stocking Michael Kors children’s shoes for the first season launch in the UK. The Netherlands brand Oilily is back for SS13 with great playful prints and vibrant colored dresses. This season we have brought Seafolly on board; a great Australian swimwear brand with girly styles and bright prints. alexandalexa.com

Force of

Nature The 40-year career of artist David Nash has seen him exhibit all over the world, but his most recent retrospective at the historic Kew Gardens is surely a natural partnership Words: Gemma Billington

I

f you’ve paid a visit to Kew Gardens since June 2012, you will have spotted something new; and I’m not talking about anything of the botanical variety. David Nash at Kew: A Natural Gallery is the current large-scale retrospective of the renowned artist, and his distinctive sculptures are dotted all around the gardens. Vast clusters of iron domes, charred wooden spheres balancing precariously on top of one another and various shapes hidden snugly amongst the plants in the Temperate House. Coming to an end in April this year, it felt pertinent to talk to the man himself on such a pivotal time in his career. When I call the Nash household, however, I’m politely asked to ring back in half an hour; David is in the middle of baking. Nash was born in Surrey and studied at both Kingston College of Art and Chelsea School of Art and was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1999. Though his work and scope have evolved somewhat, very little in his oeuvre – even from his university days – has changed. His love of wood and natural form was crystallised early on, and has awarded him a successful career that spans over 40 years. Nash now lives a rather charmed life in the Welsh mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog in a former chapel, where his personal exhibition space enables him to chop, saw and blowtorch to his heart’s

content. Nash’s projects tend to take him away for months at a time, when he moves to the site of his next commission and works on the sculptures there in a ‘quarry’, as he calls it. Though the works at Kew span decades in his career and include new pieces, the on-site working quarry formed a space he describes as like an ‘amphitheatre’, with the public able to view from one side. When I eventually prise Nash away from his woodfired bread oven, where he has been busy making pizza upon his wife’s request, I ask how the collaboration with Kew Gardens came to be. ‘Well, one thing,’ he begins, ‘is that Kew have a policy now to do a major art show every three years. The directive was to look for an artist whose work had something to do with what Kew stood for, so I sort of ticked all the boxes.’ Nash has exhibited around the globe and, most recently, in Yorkshire Sculpture Park, but surely the iconic gardens were a dream venue for such an artist, and I’m curious to know just how much free reign Nash had of the grounds. ‘There were various restrictions like the planting of trees, cables underground, Kew the Music Festival...’ Nash admits, ‘they’re not an arts venue and they’ve got lots of different agendas which clashed. We did it in the end with a great deal of will on both sides,’ he concedes. The retrospective is made up of selected works Nash cherry-picked from his

personal collection, plus the deceased oak tree he worked with on-site in the quarry. The handy map and downloadable app enables visitors to explore the various sculptures and learn a little about them. There is a kind of interactive quality to the sculptures themselves, and visitors seem compelled to pose and take pictures next to the more largescale outdoor pieces and even, in some cases, sit on them. ‘That’s the nature of the gardens really’ he says, casually, when I point this out. Do you mind people sitting on them even though they’re not supposed to, I ask? ‘I don’t mind them sitting on the iron ones because they’re indestructible.’ he replies, ‘if they sit in the spoons (Two Falling Spoons, 2006) that’s annoying!’ I assure him I haven’t seen anyone do that. Before the interview, I had prepared myself to have my artistic knowledge pushed to the limit, but Nash’s lack of pretension takes me by surprise. When I ask for his artistic ethos I’m met with a laugh; ‘the primary thing is that the audience must not be disappointed’ he states simply. It takes a while to eke out the process behind his art; the story behind those looming shapes and sculptures. ‘I’m more of a responsive artist to something that already exists.’ he says, ‘I don’t draw the sculptures before I make them because I find the form rather than pre-conceive it.’ The inspiration and passion for the material is Nash’s driving 33

force and this is most evident when he talks enthusiastically of Cork Spire (2012) – the towering structure comprised of Portuguese cork oak housed in the Nash Conservatory. ‘That sculpture is the most exciting thing for me personally because I’ve never worked with cork before and here’s a beautiful building to put it in,’ he explains. Nash’s unique style and approach to sculpture is somewhat compelling and the more I dig the more intriguing it becomes. I find it remarkable that he found his niche so early on and ask if he ever tried anything different at University. Did he not want to carve a person or paint a landscape? ‘I don’t do that.’ He says matter of factly, ‘other people do it and I love it but that’s not what I do.’ He cites painters like Rothko and Richard Long as inspirations, but it’s pretty obvious that when it comes to his own craft, Nash is very much in tune with what he wants to create. ‘I see an idea in that I just change it slightly, by carving or sawing or placement...’ he digresses, ‘whereas if you’re making something from scratch – from iron or building up to bronze from clay or plaster – that’s a whole different way of working. Wood suits my temperament.’ He admits that a lot of things are ‘made in one go’, which surprises me; surely the very nature of the sculpture medium is that it is an arduous, time-consuming process? ‘Well,

that’s long distance running’ he responds, ‘I’m a sprinter.’ To gain a deeper insight into the mind of the artist, Kew’s Shirley Sherwood Gallery have a new collection of Nash’s smaller scale sculptures and hand-drawn work. It’s a chance to see his art in an entirely new context; in drawings and sketches in thick charcoal – reminiscent of his penchant for working with charred wood. The collection provides a different perspective to the sculptures and speaks of a perennial obsession with nature and craft; the same shapes appearing again and again in various forms. It also reveal’s Nash’s respect for working sustainably and for the trees themselves; for their wisdom, history and integral role in civilisation. The collaboration of Kew and Nash has been something of a labour of love,

but undoubtedly a massively successful one. The art world is often seen as aloof and restricted, but this collaboration has embraced and inspired the public; whether they’re art fans or not. The sculptures are taken out of the context of the museum and ‘red rope’ – making them accessible to all. Nash’s next project is a rather pleasant number in Domain de Chaumont-sur-Loire, France – what he describes as an ‘extended Chelsea flower show’ in residence for six month. Still as active and in demand as ever, it would be a crime to miss the opportunity to see the work of one of the country’s most innovative and influential artists whilst it’s still on our very doorstep. After all, it won’t be around forever. David Nash at Kew: A Natural Gallery runs until 14 April 2013. kew.org

Have you met

Miss Jones?

Author Sadie Jones tells Absolutely why she’s turned to the supernatural for her latest novel and the perks of being a ‘Chiswick bore’

E

very budding writer dares to dream that their fi rst novel will catch a publisher’s eye and swiftly take the literary world by storm, with abundant critical acclaim to boot. On the surface, Sadie Jones achieved this when her debut novel, The Outcast, burst onto the scene in 2008, winning the Costa First Novel award of that year as well as being short-listed for the Orange Prize. The best-seller was also brought into the public consciousness via Richard and Judy’s influential Summer Reads recommendations. Sadie’s success, however, has been the result of an arduous 15 year slog. The daughter of Jamaican-born poet and screenwriter, Evan Jones, and actress mother Joanna Jones, Sadie initially followed in her father’s footsteps – foregoing university to become a screenwriter. She worked in fi lm and television, but despite hard work and a number of near-misses, none of her screenplays ever saw the light

of day. Sadie married the architect Tim Boyd, of Notting Hill practice Michaelis Boyd, and the couple have two children, but before The Outcast was published – despite her ostensibly happy life – Sadie felt her professional shortcomings and disappointments very keenly. She wrote The Outcast fi rst as a screenplay but it wasn’t until the producer who was trying to get it made decided to become a literary agent instead that Sadie’s voice was finally heard. The Uninvited Guests is Sadie’s third and most recent novel. The story is an abrupt departure from her fi rst two offerings (Small Wars was published in 2010 and long-listed for the Orange Prize); being part English ghost story, part surreal love-comedy. Reviewing it for The Observer, writer Stephanie Merritt described it as ‘The Woman in Black meets Downton Abbey’. The Uninvited Guests is a comedy of manners with a supernatural twist, following the trials of the Torrington family and the ominous group of strangers

who arrive unannounced at daughter Emerald’s birthday dinner; the eponymous uninvited guests... This is quite a different offering, in terms of theme, from your first two novels and explores the traditional ghost story. Why did you decide to go down this route? My second book, Small Wars, was very different to The Outcast, but The Uninvited Guests did come as a bit of a shock. It is essentially a comedy – although it gets rather dark and sinister. For me the language was the biggest departure. In both of the fi rst two the writing needed to be spare. The Uninvited Guests’ language is playful and occasionally eccentric. The book appears to be one thing and then the world of it is turned upside down. Your novels tend to be set in the past, around the late 1950s and, with your latest, in the Edwardian era. Why do you think you gravitate to past times? I’m not sure. None of them are historical 37

Lead_Interview.indd 37

07/02/2013 17:01

What is your writing routine – do you find it difficult not to give in to procrastination? I’m mostly too busy to procrastinate – and I’d rather do almost anything than clean the house. Before I had children I was stunned by how many people told me having a baby would replace the creative urge, that old chestnut about ‘the pram in the hallway’ being the enemy of art. It was Cyril Connolly who said it, apparently, meaning it was difficult to be an artist if one was constantly interrupted by annoying wives and babies. If you are the woman in this scenario you don’t have the luxury of being annoyed and procrastinating, you just get on with being the artist.

‘I’m a great believer in craft and discipline – but I have faith in inspiration too. There can’t be one without the other’ novels – I mean, they’re not genre novels – but I choose the period that will best tell the story. The Belle Époque is perceived by us now as a sort of pinnacle of civilisation, preceded by the satanic mills of the Victorian era and followed by the cataclysm of two world wars. The Torrington family have a similar fragile prettiness, built on wobbly foundations. It could not have been set at any other time. When did you know that you wanted to be a writer? I always wrote, but I thought I ought to have a proper job as well – the problem was I couldn’t think what that might be. I’m woefully ill-equipped to do anything else.

I started as a screenwriter when I was very young, it just took a while and a lot of unemployment to learn how to do it, and to become a novelist. What other authors do you admire? I’m a very poor reader when I’m writing. Before starting The Uninvited Guests I read, re-read and loved Virginia Woolf, E M Forster, Vita Sackville West, John Buchan and P G Wodehouse. The great loves that come to mind are Dostoyevsky, Hemingway, Capote, Fitzgerald, Nabokov and Colette... My favourite book of recent years is the narrative poem, The Broken Word, by Adam Foulds.

What would you say inspires your work and when do you know that an idea will work as a novel? I think good work in others is the most inspiring thing, anything that takes one away from the self and into the realms of the imagination. The initial idea is beyond my control; I can’t decide what it will be or when it will come, which is scary, but once it is there I can work to build it. I’m a great believer in craft and discipline – but I have faith in inspiration, too. There can’t be one without the other. Why did you move from Notting Hill to Chiswick? We weren’t in proper Notting Hill, it was more North Kensington. There were lots of things I liked about the area but we had outgrown our house. My husband cycles to work in Notting Hill Gate, so we had to move somewhere he could still do that, but near Richmond Park, too, because my daughter and I share a horse. I am now completely in love with Chiswick. I think I’m a Chiswick bore, it’s actually quite hard to make myself leave at all. The Uninvited Guests, Published by Chatto & Windus, is out now.

Fusion SLR facial at the West London Dermatology Centre

HEALTH & BEAUTY

As a microdermabrasion virgin, I had no idea what to expect of the Fusion SLR Facial except the promise of even skin tone with a more youthful appearance. There are three parts to the procedure: a ‘diamond’ exfoliation followed by the application of hylauronic acid for hydration and tissue regeneration, then a noninvasive laser to tighten the skin. The results? My skin is tender but looks fine, however later on I go a little pink. Next day, however, it’s all gone and by the following week I find myself inadvertently touching my cheeks; remarking how smooth and supple they feel. There is a youthful, healthy appearance to my face proving that, even though a course of the treatment is recommended, the effects of just one are immediate. microdermabrasion is truly the way forward. What took me so long? From £125, 227-229 Chiswick High Road, W4; dermclinic.co.uk

Arabella Preston’s make-up tips from behind the scenes

DATE NIGHT MAKE-UP

D

ate night makeup is a delicate, ninja-like art, striking a precarious balance between soft, sexy and as if you haven’t given your visage a second thought. Ahem. You see, men like make-up, they just don’t know it. Let’s keep it that way. Clean, glowing skin is key. Use a gentle exfoliator then prime the skin with a light moisturiser to calm any redness. Use a lightweight foundation such as Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua around the nose and mouth and disguise dark circles with a brightening concealer such as Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener. On the eyes, a soft smoky eye is universally flattering. Try a soft matte eyeshadow in dark brown or grey, such as the Givenchy palette, to smudge into the lash line, working an eye pencil into the roots of the lashes for definition. Make-up artist Florrie White who perfects faces like those of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Rosamund Pike recommends avoiding black as it can be too harsh. Finish with lashings of mascara taking care to comb clumps out. On the lips and cheeks, peachy-pinks in sheer textures are best. Florrie loves the Givenchy Hydra Sparkling Magic Lip & Cheek Balm. ‘Use it to keep your lips kissable but enhanced,’ she says. ‘And you can also use it to give yourself a peachy pink glow on your cheeks.’

Pretty Green Graham & Green Creative Director, Jamie Graham, reveals his interior inspirations and the enduring enchantment of India

collections, Moroccan pouffes, stag heads and our Jamie Dream upholstery range are but a few!

What is your philosophy? Why did you decide to open a store? It was Mum who opened up the shops back in 1974. She was inspired by interior design, and her love of travelling the globe in search of the unique and the stylish inspired her to share her finds with the bohemian residents of 1970s Notting Hill. After graduating from Kingston University with a furniture degree, I immersed myself and decided to launch the online/mail order side of the business.

And what’s your favourite new product? My favourite new product has to be the Yogi Bear lamp base, which was inspired by an antique find one Sunday morning! Tell us about your villa in Goa. Mum and I bought the house a few years ago, at the end of a Graham & Green buying trip. We thought we would treat ourselves to a couple of days in Goa after the shows. We came across this delightfully run-down Portuguese colonial villa that was crying out for some love. The three-bedroom house, which we rent out, has been lovingly restored and is furnished in true Graham & Green style with plenty of bone inlay and embossed white metal furniture mixed with Indian antiques and modern lighting. It’s the ideal stylish retreat and is not far from beaches and the famous Mapusa market. The only downside is I don’t have many opportunities to enjoy it!

What’s your background? What do you think are the main tenets of good design? Having always been interested in furniture and product design, the natural path was for me to gain a degree in it. I don’t like to follow rules so try to avoid the mainstream. My mother taught me to trust my ‘third eye’ and encouraged my vision of Graham & Green. How do you source your products? I am always on the lookout for new products and ideas. Whether I am flicking through a magazine, travelling, wandering around a trade show or antiques market, I’m constantly scouring and taking in things around me. I photograph everything! Where do you find inspiration for the kind of products you like to stock, and for the catalogues? Do you put together mood boards? I’m continually inspired by the vibrancy and possibilities when working in India and I’m a total shopaholic, so trade fairs are second nature to me. Having my family close by and going on buying trips – and to flea markets in far-flung parts of the world – make my job lovably hectic and inspiring.

grahamaandgreen.co.uk

Are there certain looks and styles that you favour? I’m a huge fan of midcentury design, the Art Deco era and the vibrancy of Asian interiors. What is your bestselling product? There are so many staples that have been bestsellers for years now. Our bone inlay 51

A river runs through it

After setting up her business in Chiswick 30 years ago, Heather Heber Percy found an unusual home on board a spacious Dutch barge. Gemma Billington goes below deck 53

W

alking along the River Thames with my companion towards Chiswick Pier, we are both simultaneously stopped dead in our tracks because of a shared realisation; it’s completely silent. We’re on our way to meet Heather Heber Percy, owner of a 100-year-old house boat and, given its location – a stone’s throw from the wooded nature reserve across the river and in the company of an occasional passing bird or rower – it’s very easy to forget we’re still in London. ‘It’s very peaceful here’, Heather agrees when we meet, ‘it feels very safe too.’ She is an elegant woman swathed in black layers and sporting a sleek 60s style long bob. As Chairman of the Association of British Introduction Agencies and founder of high-end introduction agency, The County Register, Heather has been living and working in Chiswick for 30 years. Though unfamiliar with the area before settling here, Heather is full of praise for the area and talks enthusiastically of walks along the Thames and the many watering holes to be found on the way. Libra, her abode, is moored amongst the eclectic cluster of houseboats on the Pier. ‘We’re all very friendly,’ she says of her neighbours, ‘some of them have been on the Pier as long as I have.

The boats don’t tend to change hands that often.’ It’s easy to see why. Whimsical as it may be, there is a slight eccentricity that comes with the houseboat owner and Heather’s unconventional home has attracted attention from both press and the public since she moved in. A love of being on the water is essential, yes, but the houseboat owner also needs experience and a sense that they know what they’re doing, especially with a boat of Libra’s calibre. Not only is she a centenarian, Libra, a Dutch barge, known as a tjalk (pronounced ‘challuk’), is a whopping 80ft in length. Heather wanted a houseboat but couldn’t abide the confines of a narrowboat, and Libra came into her possession from Holland around 30 years ago. ‘It’s centrally heated throughout and has a proper ‘Gardner’ engine so you can take it out on the Thames.’ Heather tells me, ‘but she is a bit of an old lady, she takes ages to turn so you really need to know what you’re doing!’ Curmudgeonly she may be, but with a sturdy steel hull, Libra is made of strong stuff and shows no signs of wear and tear. Heather was taught to sail as a child (her brother also lives on a boat in Florida) and, once inside, it’s obvious that she has a keen eye for interior design too. The tjalk was originally comprised of three cabins, which Heather converted into two

double cabins when she took it over. Both are generous in size; Heather’s in a delicate shade of lemon and the other a classic silver/grey. ‘People have this preconceived idea that it’s going to be really small.’ Heather admits, ‘they think it must be pretty awful living on a boat and of course it’s not.’ Indeed, the first thing you notice once inside is the sheer size and space, and the lack of motion sickness-inducing movement from the river. ‘I’ve tried to keep it in the Victorian style,’ Heather says as we stand in the middle of the gorgeous living room area, which has wood panelling, feature wallpaper from Osborne & Little and a palette of rich teal. The sporadic collection of art that covers the walls is a brief distraction from the ethereal view of the nature reserve and passing river wildlife from the petite windows. ‘I decorated the whole thing myself’ Heather says with an air of justified pride. The scheme suits the boat’s character perfectly and has personality in spades. This is most apparent when, at the end of our tour, I comment on a small oil painting of a young girl, ‘that’s me,’ Heather says, ‘I remember it being painted. I was terribly ill at the time, but my mother insisted I sit for it! She made the top for me but I didn’t like it and I didn’t want to wear it!’ I bet she’s glad she sat still, in the end. thecountyregister.com, leannedixon.com

Betty Blythe WHAT: Betty Blythe founder, Lulu Gwynne, is obsessed with all things vintage, girlie and glam. Her dream to open a local neighbourhood deli-cumafternoon tea joint was inspired by old school Hollywood actress Betty Blythe and was opened, somewhat surreptitiously, on Brook Green’s Blythe Road. Offering quintessentially British food staples with a Hollywood twist, the afternoon teas are a decadent affair and can be catered for large parties, hen dos and baby showers. WHY IS IT SPECIAL: The dazzling array of extracurricular retroinspired activities. There’s everything from cupcake decorating workshops to Charleston dancing, fascinator hat making and vintage photo shoots.

DON’T MISS: The truffle chocolate brownies.

Afternoon Delight

Absolutely puts the best local tea spots to the test

Upsy Daisy Bakery WHAT: The rest of the world may perceive afternoon tea as a daily occurrence in the lives of the English – drinking out of dainty cups with our little fingers raised and top hats laid down – but if only that were really the case. Upsy Daisy Bakery have made it their mission to bring back that homely feel to tea in the afternoon, which is missing in the big chains on the high street and too formal in the up-market hotels. They’ve certainly achieved what they set out to do with aplomb. As well as a whole page on the menu dedicated to tea, there are also different types of china pots and cups to compliment each blend. The food is brought out on a triple-tiered cake stand. Finger sandwiches on the

bottom, fresh scones straight from the on-site bakery and an award-winning cupcake of choice on top. The secret ingredient in the egg mayonnaise sandwiches and the Devonshire clotted cream is more than enough to keep anyone going until supper time. And if it is an extra special occasion, Pimm’s and Prosecco can be added to up the indulgence. WHY IS IT SPECIAL: Snug and cosy with friendly and helpful staff. All the food is fresh and handmade on-site too.

DON’T MISS: The caramel fudge cupcake. Gloriously decadent. Afternoon Tea for Two, £19.95. 387 King Street, Stamford Brook, W6; upsydaisybakery.com

The Original Maids of Honour WHAT: There may be plenty of quaint cake and tea spots in London but very few can lay claim to the kind of rich history within the walls of The Original Maids of Honour in Kew. The unusual name derives from the Maid of Honour cakes which were, allegedly, favoured by Anne Boleyn and her Maids of Honour. The legend goes that King Henry VIII was so enamoured with the cakes when he first tasted one that he confiscated the recipe and kept it under lock and key at Richmond Palace. One is advised to take this story with a pinch of salt, but the tea rooms have a fascinating (and provable) history as well as an archive of ration books, menus and correspondences. Established in 1887, the original building took quite a battering during the Second World War, but was built back to it’s former glory. Today the menus offer traditional, no nonsense cakes, breakfasts and lunches.

WHY IS IT SPECIAL: Pop along to the Richmond Museum to see the original gold painted shop front sign, which has been on loan since the 1980s. DON’T MISS: The Maids of Honour cakes, of course. When in Rome...

The Petersham WHAT: Designed by prolific architect John Giles and completed in 1865, The Petersham Hotel was described, at that time, as encompassing a ‘florid Italian Gothic’ style. The looming property stands in vast grounds overlooking the Petersham Meadows to a distinctive, picturesque curve in the River Thames. A grandiose building it may be (those who tend to suffer from vertigo may want to avoid looking up at the spectacular unsupported Portland stone staircase; one of the country’s largest) but there is a natural informal ambiance as soon as you step inside. Afternoon tea, served daily from 15:30 to 17:30, is a traditional affair; which is enjoyed ensconced in the comfort of the unassuming Petersham restaurant. Choose your tea and while away the

hours overlooking the serene vista and dog walkers passing by whilst picking at finger sandwiches, delightful pastries and scones layered with lashings of clotted cream. WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL: It’s got to be the view. Fight for the cosy window seat and watch the world go by. DON’T MISS: Tempting as it may be to fill up on the ubiquitous scones, cream and jam, the array of petite pastries – macarons, lemon drizzle, fruit cake – are fully deserving of your attention.

Afternoon Tea at The Petersham costs £23.50 per person with a supplement of £12.50 per person for a glass of Champagne. Nightingale Lane, Richmond, Surrey, TW10; petershamhotel.co.uk 59

Play it again, Sam Gemma Billington indulges in a lazy weekday brunch, courtesy of Sam’s Brasserie

Sam’s Brasserie 11 Barley Mow Passage, Chiswick, W4 020 8987 0555 samsbrasserie.co.uk

S

am Harrison, founder of his eponymous brasserie, puts it best: ‘for me, going to brunch is total indulgence. It’s not a necessity.’ It is, indeed, difficult to argue the merits of this superfluous in-between meal, but perhaps it’s time we Brits let our hair down and embraced the brunch craze, which has stealthily made its way from trendy New York eateries to our shores. If you’re new to the brunch concept, then Sam’s is the perfect place to start. Founded eight years ago, at a time when Chiswick wasn’t yet a major player in the west London food scene, Sam’s Brasserie opened in Barley Mow passage, just off the High Road. ‘You could tell that something was really happening in Chiswick’, says Harrison, who previously worked under Rick Stein, a chef he still counts as a friend and recipe contributor.

Since then, Sam’s Brasserie has cemented a loyal fan base due to its sumptuous menus, commitment to local produce (Harrison cites local food initiative Abundance) and a widespread appeal; everyone from business folk to families, couples and night owls can be found in the smart warehouse-style space. Personally, Harrison has a real penchant for brunch, and is unashamedly proud of his menu, which boasts standard brunch staples such as Eggs Benedict, full English and French toast, as well as some more off-beat dishes like scrambled eggs with chorizo, duck hash and salmon and smoked haddock kedgeree. I go for the Coln Valley Smoked Salmon, scrambled eggs and brioche – ordered with a slight trepidation on account of the sometimes sickly sweet French bun. It is, however, a masterful dish and the flavours complement one another beautifully. It doesn’t

help that the brioche is heaving with generous lashings of delectable smoked salmon. My partner goes for the scrambled eggs and chorizo – Harrison’s personal favourite – with the primary ingredient sourced from popular Spanish importers and restaurateurs Brindisa. Again, the dish illustrates the chef ’s keen attention to detail with all elements working in (delicious) harmony; the cherry tomatoes and chorizo pack a punch and add a touch of pizazz to an otherwise very simple dish. Our meals are accompanied by a good old fashioned pot of tea, though my partner does try a carrot, orange and celery juice to kick start our (admittedly rather relaxed) working day. Indeed, perhaps this most decadent of meals is best enjoyed at the weekend, to take full advantage of its idle nature. It’s official; I’m now a fully fledged member of the brunch brigade. 61

Food& Travel THE HOTEL If you’ve ever yearned to call a castle home, this is the hotel for you. Bovey Castle is a ravishing resort set in a 400 acre private estate within Dartmoor National Park. A lavish neo-Elizabethan manor house built by the W.H. Smith (the stationers) family in 1907, Bovey Castle exudes opulence and grandeur. With a blockbuster interior including the Cathedral Room – featuring a carved stone chimney, minstrel’s gallery and ornate plaster ceilings – plus an elegant Adam drawing room, guests can indulge in a Downton Abbey lifestyle both inside and out. Overlooking the championship riverside 18 hole golf course embraced by the dramatic moor, there’s a range of country pursuits including archery, clay pigeon shooting, tennis and bracing walks, plus an indoor Deco style swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and a separate holistic spa. A daily falconry display featuring avian marvels such as Merlin, a huge, handsome but not-sosmart European owl and Rosie, a disagreeable Bald Eagle, is top class entertainment.

THE BEDROOM Greet the morning by throwing open the leaded windows, taking in the glorious vista and breathing diamond sharp moorland air. Each of Bovey Castle’s 79 bedrooms and suites and 14 lodges guarantee an exceptional start to the day. As befitting the surroundings, Castle Valley rooms are decorated with restrained woodland and floral prints, sumptuous lined curtains and classic furnishings. Beds are supremely comfortable and the wooden chest containing a variety of beverages and fine china with fresh milk provided is a welcome addition. THE RESTAURANT Dinner and breakfast is served in the main restaurant, the elegant Edwardian Grill decorated in Art Deco style enhanced by Chinoiserie wall covering. A fine dining menu changes with the seasons and promises West Country produce. The house wine is excellent. The Castle Bistro offers more meals and snacks (there is a special children’s menu) in relaxed contemporary surroundings. And what could be nicer than Afternoon Tea (think scones with lashings of jam and Devon cream) taken outside on the terrace. A glass of Champagne perhaps? In such civilized surroundings as these, it would seem churlish not to.

Bovey Castle, Devon THE SPA Dartmoor meets Delhi at Bovey Castle’s relaxing Sundãri Spa. Meaning ‘beautiful woman’ in Sanskrit and created by supermodel Christy Turlington, Sundãri comprises an exclusive collection of Ayurvedic treatments and products based on ancient Indian healing. There’s certainly a hint of mystic spirituality with scented candles flickering in the relaxation room and around the sunken bath set on a plinth in the largest of the six treatment rooms. With the emphasis on massage, most facials and body treatments are conducted using a range of edible sounding products such as the Rooibos Tea, Honey and Fruit Brightening Enzyme Facial (60 minutes, £100). You’ll emerge looking good enough to eat. GETTING THERE A half hour journey by road (the hotel can arrange this) from Exeter St Davids Station, where regular trains run from Paddington. PRICE TAG Bovey Castle is a member of Pride of Britain Hotels – a consortium of 45 privately-owned independent British hotels and spas. Rooms start from £249 per night based on two sharing. 0800 089 3929; prideofbritainhotels.com. 65

Blame it on

Rio

From the majesty of Sugarloaf Mountain to the madcap architecture of Brasilia, Claire Cohen explores Brazil’s cultural highlights

I

n Brazil, they say that God created the world in six days and on the seventh he made Rio de Janeiro. It may be a well-worn adage. But, as the city prepares to take its place on the world stage, the sentiment has never been more appropriate. This is Brazil’s moment. In just a few months it has been named as the world’s sixth largest economy, brought samba music to Stratford during the Olympics closing ceremony and starred in a documentary series alongside Michael Palin. Not before time, our eyes are being opened to the many different faces of this emerging nation. You can experience the sights, sounds and colours of Rio; the modernist architecture of Brasilia and the beaches of Santa Catarina in just a few days. And as the host of the 2014 World Cup and the Olympic Games in 2016, there could hardly be a better time for Brazil to establish itself as a goto destination for sun, sports and spending. Rio is at the heart of the country’s regeneration. It is in the grip of modernisation. Money is being pumped into airports and hotels in anticipation of tourist numbers

Ipanema beach. In fact, everywhere you turn in this city, you come face-to-face with another world-famous landmark. At 396 metres tall, Sugarloaf Mountain is perhaps the most imposing. The twostage cable car ride to its summit is not for the faint-hearted. But stick with it. On a clear day, the views are the star of the show. Guanabara Bay spreads out below. Islands are dotted along the horizon. Better still, time your visit to coincide with the sunset – as we did – and catch a glimpse of Rio’s most famous resident. For, as the sky darkens, Christ the Redeemer appears through the mist on COPACABANA PALACE an adjacent mountain; arms outstretched, illuminated by a blazing purple halo. It’s an unforgettable sight. doubling to over 3 million a year by 2016. My next stop couldn’t have been more My first stop is the historic Copacabana different: the luxurious resort of Ponta dos Palace Hotel. With creamy Art Deco Ganchos, a 90 minute flight south of Rio in features and views across the glittering the state of Santa Catarina. The first thing to Atlantic, it’s easy to see why the world’s remember when staying here is to leave your most famous faces choose to stay here. watch at the door. ‘We don’t take any notice of On the doorstep is Copacabana beach; its time’, explains manager Miguel Garcia. celebrated golden curve of sand lined with It’s this philosophy of indulgence that lively bars, cafes and teenagers tight-rope runs through the resort; from the ten course walking between palm trees. breakfast tasting menu to the absence of check out times and attentive staff who will attend to your every whim. The resort is a byword for romance. You can enjoy a couple’s boat ride (sunset, champagne, oysters), couple’s massage or a couple’s cookery course. There’s even a private island, where couples can eat a candlelit supper. In the hotel restaurant I enjoy shrimp with manioc cream, seabass ceviche and langoustine risotto. There’s a seafood grill on the terrace (90 per cent of the world’s oysters are farmed here). Vegetables are sourced from the on-site organic garden. This is a food lover’s paradise, too. But, if you can tear yourself away from the gastronomic delights and plush robes, there are other attractions worth exploring. Jump in the car and make the 50 minute journey to Florianopolis. With a population of 400,000 – but the infrastructure to cope with over a million in high season – this can feel like a ghost town, albeit a fascinating one. It became popular with South American tourists a decade ago, after one of their beloved soap operas was set here.

PONTA DOS GANCHOS

Visitors also pour into the neighbouring trendy beach resort of Jurere – which boasts a house owned by supermodel Gisele – and the historic town of San Antonio, with its lively municipal market. But no trip to Brazil is complete without discovering the work of architect and national treasure Oscar Niemeyer, who died late last year. So, with a heavy heart, I bade farewell to Ponta and travelled on north to Brasilia. Conceived in 1956, Brasilia was the result of a contest to design the new federal capital, held by then President Juscelino Kubitschek.Urban planner Lucio Costa beat 5,500 entrants to win with his madcap vision and – along with Niemeyer – saw it constructed in just three years and Brasilia was inaugurated in 1960. The city’s layout is unlike any other. Designed in the shape of a plane, it’s the largest city in the world not in existence at the start of the 20th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each district is divided into numbered blocks and each of these ‘units’ has its own set of amenities: school, church, shops, community centre, library and cinema. Commercial districts are eccentrically

clumped together (we drive along a street lined with pharmacies). There are building rules too: no block is more than six storeys high and all stand on stilts, to improve ventilation. It’s fascinating – even more so if you allow yourself to get lost. Arty shops and cafes have popped up below residential super blocks. Buildings are dotted with geometric tiles by artist Athos Bulcão. It’s all in stark contrast to the brilliant white, modernist buildings that make up Niemeyer’s utopian ‘triangle of power’ in the city centre. But to really appreciate Brasilia, just stand in one of its vast squares to take it all in. There’s no danger of claustrophobia here, the giant structures create an overwhelming landscape. It’s easy to feel small. Little wonder the capital is famed for its wide expanse of dazzling blue sky. Ponta dos Ganchos offers rates from £420 per bungalow per night, including all meals and based on two sharing. +55 48 39537000; pontadosganchos.com. The Leading Hotels of the World (00800 2888 8882 offers stays at Copacabana Palace, Rio de Janeiro from US$510 per room per night based on two people sharing including buffet breakfast. lhw.com/copacabana For further information on Brazil please visit braziltour.com

Art for art’s sake Absolutely packs a paintbrush and picks the top three resorts that combine art with relaxation

MASSERIA TORRE COCCARO, PUGLIA

MASSERIA TORRE COCCARO, PUGLIA

A.A. Gill was rather rude about Puglia in The Sunday Times a couple of years ago, dismissing it as ‘dirty’ and ‘despondent’. We have no idea what he was on about. Any doubts you may have about this southern region of Italy will be dispelled by this lovely hotel in a hot, lazy, rural landscape alive with bees and wild flowers, and dotted with olive trees that are hundreds of years old. A ‘masseria’ is an old fortified farmhouse typical of Puglia. Coccaro, which is built around a charming courtyard, and boasts its own 17thcentury church, is one of the most sympathetic restorations, maintaining its rustic, irregular charms – bumpy limestone floors and walls, and a shabby-chic look -- without compromising on comfort. This place is an art lovers dream. There is an artist in residence and twice a year a new piece of work is launched. The current collection totals 14 – quite brilliant – installations including three frescos in the hotel’s 12th-century grotto. The cuisine is here is rural comfort food. There’s not much emphasis on meat; Puglian cuisine evolved in a poor region that derived taste from the most basic (and healthy) ingredients,

THE DOLDER GRAND, ZURICH

and thus does incredibly inventive things with vegetables and pasta, as well as serving excellent fresh fish from the Adriatic coast. Coccaro is full of secret nooks and crannies, with divans and wooden tables where you can find some privacy in the sun, and it has a great pool with a sloping shallow area that is perfect for children. It is friendly, charming, unpretentious and thoroughly Puglian. You probably won’t spot gangs of patronising British media luvvies here -- but maybe that’s all part of its charm. Doubles are from € 422 a night including breakfast and taxes. masseriatorrecoccaro.com

Think of Zurich and you might think of bankers, watches and chocolate, but art? In fact, the city has a vibrant art scene and at The Dolder Grand, art is very much on the agenda. This city landmark has been perched above Lake Zurich since 1899. After a fouryear restoration led by Sir Norman Foster it reopened in 2008 as a thoroughly modern masterpiece. Two wings with sweeping glass facades now flank the hotel’s main building, with its fairytale steeples and lofty wooden ceilings, artfully mixing the traditional and contemporary. The Dolder’s owner, Urs Schwarzenbach’s museum-worthy private art collection – there are around 130 pieces – adorns the walls. An enormous Warhol panel hangs above the onyx reception desk, depicting everything from Marilyn Monroe to Chairman Mao, while a Dali greets you at the entrance to the two Michelin-starred restaurant. Art is all over the city. From Chagall’s exquisite stained-glass windows in the 9th-century Gothic abbey, Fraumünster, and Giacometti’s murals at the police

headquarters, to the street art of Zurich West, the former industrial quarter where old warehouses have been converted into shops and bars. The stately Kunsthaus is the venue for fine arts – from the golden age of Dutch painting to sculpture by Cy Twombly – while the Kunsthalle is a bastion for international contemporary art. And alternative art spaces are opening all the time, such as artist-run Dienstgebäude and Karma International. After a hard day on the art trail, head to the Dolder’s outstanding spa, passing a joyful Niki de Saint Phalle sculpture on route. After an indulgent treatment, jump in to the outdoor hot tub for spectacular views over the city, and a fabulously curvy Fernando Botero bronze. The author flew with SWISS (swiss.com). Double rooms at The Dolder Grand are from CHF 590 (thedoldergrand.com). For more information on Switzerland, visit mySwitzerland.com

This spectacularly scenic retreat not far from Versailles is the very inspiration behind the early works of Jean-Baptiste Corot, forefather of Impressionism – and the hotel’s namesake, and it was here that his good friend Claude Monet paid him regular visits. Guests can now follow in the footsteps of the Impressionist masters and develop their artistic talents under guidance from esteemed local artist Agnes Monteilhet. It would be more than fair to say that Agnes, who has studied and exhibited at a variety of prestigious Parisian institutions, is truly passionate about her subject, which makes her the ideal conduit for the creative d’Avray atmosphere. A weekend at Les Etangs is luxuriously serene and feels both indulgent and peaceful as you rest, nestled in the charming 200-year-old artists’ hamlet of Ville d’Avray. The serenity of the setting emanates throughout the hotel and the bedrooms are magical. Each one is named

after a famous guest who has stayed there – think Victor Hugo and the Duc d’Orléans – and boasts a beautiful colour palette in both bedroom and bathroom, giving a calming and unique feel. For those who would rather just soak up the atmosphere than engage in artistic studies, the hotel also boasts a gorgeous Caudalie Vinotherapie spa and a gastronomic restaurant, Le Café des Artistes, where you can sample delicious French delicacies and relax in front of stunning views over the gardens, lily-pad ponds and distant forest. Be an Artist for a Day with Les Etangs de Corot starts from € 556 for two including a 3-hour pastel drawing, watercolour or oil painting class, an overnight stay in a double room with breakfast and dinner at Le Café des Artistes. Standard Room rates start from €195. etangs-corot.com Eurostar Plus Culture gives passengers 2-for-1 entry into some of Paris’ most popular museums. Eurostar operates up to 18 daily services from London to Paris Gare Du Nord with return fares from £69. eurostar.com

You may know us from walking your dog in the park, local charity events or simply recognise a familiar face; we walk the same streets and eat in the same restaurants you do. Of course, it’s also quite possible that you – or someone you know – has let or rented a property through us. We’ve been around for years and our success is built on the fact that people who use us once, tend to use us again. And tell their friends. Because most of our agents live in the areas in which they work, they really understand what matters to landlords and tenants there. Many agents will claim to know more about where you live than anyone else. But we understand it’s because people know us, that time and again we let and sell properties more quickly and more profitably than anyone else.

Brianna Joss Not just Brook Green’s most dominant letting agent – Brianna is immersed in the community: as a committee member of local charity ‘West London Action for Children’, or helping to organise a tennis tournament or quiz night. All done with an enthusiasm born out of a passion for the area and the people who live here.

IN THEIR

OWN WORDS PHOTOGRAPHY: RICHARD CLARK

orn and raised in Brighton, I moved to London in my early twenties to work as an estate agent and West London was the natural choice for me having always had family living in the area. My Nan and Granddad lived in Notting Hill and I remember as a child loving the colourful houses and equally colourful residents. Having lived and worked in Hammersmith, Shepherd’s Bush and now Chiswick, I know for certain that it is my favourite area for many reasons. Walking around Chiswick I feel a sense of community, warmth and safety as this villagelike atmosphere attracts families and young professionals like me. I am still discovering hidden delights all over Chiswick, even after living here for four years, and being a foodie I am spoilt for choice - the amount of quality restaurants, bistros and cafes is staggering. There are a variety of outstanding pubs each offering a unique setting and character, including the High Road House, The Bollo, The Swan, to mention a few. There is also a most sophisticated pub crawl along the River Thames that starts at Strand on the Green and has no definitive destination… The best way to see and experience Chiswick is at the weekend as the high street is bustling and comes alive with activity. Turnham Green hosts a variety of events and there is an excellent Farmer’s food market on Sunday’s held in the farmyard setting of the Grove Park Farm House. This is adjacent to the Dukes Meadows recreational area, Chiswick House and Grounds and the River Thames which is a popular place for families and friends to meet and relax and where children can play.

Turnham Green Terrace has fantastic shops and deli’s – including the best homemade ice cream from Fouberts. Chiswick cannot be discussed without mentioning it’s abundance of quality schools, which draw families from all over London. The properties falling into the schools catchments are very ‘hot’ property with many homes going to multiple bids well over the asking prices. Chiswick, like many other London postcodes, has seen an incredible rise in property prices over the past few years due to demand being high and supply being low. Having worked as an agent since 2006, Chiswick for me has certainly been the most pleasurable and exciting. Working with different types of clients ensures that each day is different and provides new challenges to face. Single and professional couples provide steady demand for properties in the region of £250,000 - £500,000 and we have seen a 5% increase of buy-to-let investors compared to this time last year. Expanding families look for homes in the exclusive pockets of Glebe Estate, Bedford Park, Chiswick Park, Grove Park, Wendell Park and Starch Green with prices ranging from £800,000 to £3m. Mature downsizers who sell their large family home in the above mentioned hot spots look to buy large apartments or small houses just off the High Road to be close to local shops and transport links. Residents in Chiswick remain in Chiswick, buying and selling their homes to suit their changing needs and really, who could blame them? KFH kfh.co.uk 020 3280 3513

MOST INTERESTING PROPERTY...

We recently sold a charming timber framed cottage dating back to the 17th century and dfletcher@johndwood.co.uk formerly an old coaching inn. Close to the river Thames at Chiswick mall it was reputedly a watering hole for the highwayman Dick Turpin MOST SATISFYING and is rumoured to be haunted TRANSACTION I’VE HAD... by the ghost of a young woman. With over thirty years in the Chiswick residential market it’s impossible MOST LIKE ON MY to pick one most satisfying transaction, although BOOKS... recently we exchanged on Is located on the island of a £4,000,000 Grade II Tortola in the British Virgin listed house in Bedford Islands with its own private park just days before the beach and lovely palm trees and client emigrated to New it would give me great pleasure Zealand. The look of delight to conduct all viewings personally and relief on my clients face was and spend some time with my feet in most satisfying. the warm Caribbean sea.

Master Class: Family Friendly Viewings

Most parents with young children are familiar with the scenario of frantic tidying that occurs in the ten minutes proceeding the welcome, yet unexpected, call from friends announcing that they’re in the area and about to drop by for tea. In order to avoid similar stress, if you are selling your family house you should expect your agent to take the time to enquire about convenient viewing times that fit around your family’s schedule, such as morning naps for babies and tea time for unruly toddlers. You may wish to consider asking for block viewings at a time when you can take a walk to the park; alternatively, your agent could arrange an open day one Saturday whilst you visit friends out of town. On a positive note, preparing your family house for market is a great excuse to get started on de-cluttering those toy boxes. David Williams – “Head of Sales” Jackson-Stops & Staff, 020 8943 9955; jackson-stops.co.uk

MOST UNUSUAL INTERIOR...

We are currently marketing a wonderful apartment in the Chiswick Green Studios development that was originally designed for a boating enthusiast and as well as many curved walls there is a ‘captain’s cabin’ study with port hole window and sleeping platform designed to remind the original owner of sleeping on his boat!

I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE... Two pheasants, a fox, and badger all staring at me in a reception room! A recent client was a keen hunting enthusiast and sent many of his trophies to the taxidermist, they made many of our potential purchasers a fright and in the end we had to banish them to the attic along with a menagerie of stuffed animals.

UP YOUR STREET CORNEY REACH

Away from the hustle and bustle of the High Road is Corney Reach, built on land where Corney House once stood. Nestled on the river at Chiswick pier, there are a number of well proportioned apartments and three storey townhouses. It is home to Chiswick lifeboat station and surrounded by some of the areas most sought after places to relax and unwind including the magnificent Palladian Villa, Chiswick house, set in beautiful historic gardens. Dean Moriarty, Manager, Faron Sutaria 020 8740 7766; Frithville Gardens is very close to St Stephen’s School, so is likely to be in the catchment area, and gives you access to Hammersmith Park. It is also just a stone’s throw from Shepherds Bush Market tube station and all the bus routes on Uxbridge Road.

FACT

Derek Fletcher, Associate Director, John D Wood & Co. 020 8995 9394; I was fascinated to learn that following a tragic flood in the 1850’s when several servants lost their lives, trapped in basements, subsequent properties built on the Mall were forbidden to have basements to prevent a reoccurrence of the tragedy.

LOCAL HANGOUT

Brianna Joss, Letting Manager, Bective Leslie Marsh, 020 7603 5181; I would highly recommend Pentolina, just a couple of doors away it is far too convenient! Charming, authentic, fantastic Italian food and wonderful service. In summer the front is opened up and you can dine outside, in winter it’s cosy and warm, the food is fabulous and the prices are very reasonable.

INAUGURAL BARNES MUSIC FESTIVAL SATURDAY 16TH AND SUNDAY 24TH MARCH Marsh & Parsons is pleased to be

sponsoring the launch of a brand new Barnes Music Festival in March. The first ever festival will celebrate the work of one of Barnes’ most illustrious musicians, composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934), with the festival themed ‘Holst and the English Tradition’. It will take place in venues ranging from St Mary’s Barnes to the famous Bull’s Head and St Osmund’s Hall. Over the nine days, the festival will bring together international artists including famous pianist Graham Johnson and the highly praised Tippett Quartet along with an array of performances, singers, jazz artists, and feature choral concerts by the Barnes Concert Band and St Mary’s Choir. Peter Rollings, chief executive of Marsh & Parsons, said “It is shaping up to be an exceptional event and we are pleased to have the opportunity to support and celebrate Barnes’ musical heritage and its thriving community. It may well be the first of its kind, but we have no doubt the festival will bring local residents together, and we are glad to do our bit to help. May it be the first of many in years to come.” For further information please contact: The Wriglesworth Consultancy Dan Pike / Neil Mackwood, 0207 427 1400

PROPERTY NEWS GOING GREEN IN STYLE Orchards of London have recently introduced a fleet of new Fiat 500s to their boutique offices in Chiswick and Ealing. Each vehicle is equipped with the award-winning 0.9-litre TwinAir engine, ensuring they are a perfect environmental fit. Fiat is internationally recognised as having the lowest average CO2 emissions of all major car brands in Europe, while Orchards of London recently won gold for corporate social responsibility at the National Estate Agency of the Year

Awards. Paul Connolly, managing director at Orchards of London says “The environment is extremely important to us and we have a responsibility to make sure that we look after what we have. One of the first things we checked when looking for a new car was the carbon emissions. We also felt the Fiat 500 would represent our brand very well as it is modern, elegant and full of personality – just like us! Orchards of London, 020 8995 9797; orchardsoflondon.com

LOST HOUR...

Absolutely

It rarely happens but a quick visit to Dukes Meadow Golf Range to try and improve the handicap is always high on the agenda or “nipping out” to support my kids in their sporting endeavours.

THE MOST FABULOUS COCKTAIL IS...

Do I look like a cocktail connoisseur! My colleagues tell me the Pina Colada at Carvosso’s is hard to beat or a Mojito at the ever popular Sam’s Brasserie.

W4

FAVOURTIE RESTAURANT...

BEST KEPTSECRET

Although not a total secret Adam Waite tailors in The Barley Mow centre has been a fantastic find for made to measure suits for all budgets. Impeccable service.

The choice is quite something in 2013. River Café for occasions is “simply the best” whilst La Trompette is consistently good and for a convenient family meal then its off to Annie’s on Strand on the Green or The Bedlington and its excellent Thai food.

MOST FABULOUS PROPERTY...

Currently has to be the unmodernised Grade II listed house we have on the market in Addison Grove Bedford Park. At 3200sqft, off street parking and south facing garden it would be hard to find a reason not to buy it.

STUART BALFRE, SALES MANAGER AT BUSHELLS HAMMERSMITH As we kick of 2013 there are already positive signs for the sales market in Chiswick, despite the challenging market conditions facing other areas. Turnham Green and Glebe State remain popular with families moving into the area due to the proximity to Belmont School, however limited stock is pushing prices up in those areas meaning prospective buyers have to move fast. We expect to see a steady increase in sales of one to three bed properties in the first part of 2013 with many first-time buyers looking to escape the hubbub of the city but retain its positive transport links. 020 8563 0123; bushells.com

EDWARD PRICKETT ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR JOHN D WOOD

What a phenomenal start to the year, we have been extremely busy from the start of 2013. With an acute shortage of family houses there is serious competition amongst buyers for each and every house we sell. There is slightly more choice for flat buyers but still no way near enough to satisfy demand. Buyers are highly motivated and exceptionally keen to find a new home. If it is your intention to move this year call Kerr And Co today. 020 8743 1166; kerrandco.com

I joined the Richmond Office in October 2012, having previously headed our Primrose Hill Office for 10 years, and I must say what a delight it has been. The sought after schooling, convenient transport links, excellent leisure facilities combined with the beauty of Richmond Park and the River will continue to ensure that local property prices remain buoyant for the foreseeable future. I have recently completed my Indices in line with the LSE which compiles property transactions since January 2005. If you have not received it already do please call and I will send you a copy. It proves interesting reading! 0 20 8940 6611; johndwood.co.uk 127
