anolo Blahnik, probably the most famous shoe designer in the world, waited 44 years after opening his first London shop before opening the second one. He wanted to be quite certain it was in the right place. This kind of perfectionism reflects in his design work and is probably what has made his shoes such iconic pieces. We were lucky in this issue to be able to ask some questions of the man himself, and to reproduce some of his beautiful illustrations as we celebrate the new store. And what better to wear on your feet with spring's new colours than a pair of multi-hued Manolos? Because also in this issue we are looking at the new season's palette and discovering that it mostly

7 CHIS16_EDS_LETTER.indd 7

consists of pink. That's right – as soon as the first rays of sun emerge from winter we are all going to be dressing in bubblegum shades. But they're very grown-up ones, so you won't be looking like your five-year-old. Drool over our pink-themed fashion shoot on page 26 and enjoy the fresh yellows of Charlotte Adsett's sunshine wardrobe on page 25. Fashion aside, we are sampling new recipes from the Hemsley sisters in this issue, visiting interior designer William Yeoward's flat and celebrating the anniversary of London Transport's iconic typeface in Acton, among other things. We hope you enjoy it. ◆

After a series of visions, Nick has the unsatiable desire to investigate what lies beneath the brink of reality. No one understands, not his fellow teachers nor his girlfriend. Desperate and alone, he turns to a Year 10 pupil. But can she be expected to have all the answers? THE LONDON TYPE

An open weekend at the London Transport Museum’s Acton depot celebrates 100 years of the iconic Johnston font

ondon Transport prides itself on its iconic design. From commissioned artworks to signage, logos, tiles and textiles, the look of our transport system has always been consistently distinctive and stylish. London is defined in the world’s visual vocabulary by its double decker buses, enamel tube signs and black taxis – and one of the main signifiers is the copyrighted Johnston font, which turns 100 this year. In celebration of this – one of the world’s longest-lasting examples of corporate branding – the London Transport Museum is opening the doors to its working depot in Acton for a weekend of family activities this month. This working museum depot, usually closed to the public, is a treasure trove not only for trainspotters but also for design junkies. Holding more than 320,000 artefacts from London’s rich transport history over more than 150 years, the range includes posters, vehicles, maps, signs and models. There are signs for waiting rooms and station toilets, rare vehicles, ceramic tiles, ticket machines and various ephemera. The A to Z of London Open Weekend, which takes place on 23 and 24 April, will offer visitors the chance to explore all of it.

creating demonstration from lettering experts Calligraphy and Design and take part in font making activities. And it's not just for design buffs – the weekend is full of activities for children, who will love letter printing in the Johnston style, having a jump around on the bouncy bus and riding on a miniature railway. The Museum’s collection of scale models of underground stations will be on display too, as well as models made from Lego and Bayko.  Tickets for the A to Z London Museum Open Weekend are available from the London Transport Museum and cost £10. The depot is at 118-120 Gunnersbury Lane, W3 9BQ ltmuseum.co.uk Launched in 1916 and immediately identifiable as the tube font, the Johnston font is at the heart of this exhibition, with the original wooden printing blocks designed and carved by Johnston a century ago on display. A focus on the ‘father of modern calligraphy,’ Edward Johnston, will explore how the typeface has been adapted and altered since its creation. Design enthusiasts will be able to drop in on a calligraphy

Sole Man Manolo Blahnik opened his first London store in Chelsea in 1973, and his second in the Burlington Arcade last month. Absolutely meets the seminal designer to talk decades of shoes Interview pendle harte

ABSOLUTELY:Your design process is known for its precision. Where do you start when imagining a new shoe? MANOLO BLAHNIK: Usually the idea comes from something that has been in my mind for a long time, sometimes I go to an exhibition or visit a new city and see something that I like and translate it immediately into a shoe. I don’t follow a design process, if something comes to my mind I put it down on paper. Sometimes it could even be a material that inspires an entire collection… there is always a surprise. You started in set design but moved to shoes. What was the appeal of shoes? MB: Design in general has always been my passion. Fashion, art, architecture. I started as a set and costume designer, fascinated by the fact that I could make up a character and by how important costumes are in creating personality. I had the opportunity to meet the extraordinary Diana Vreeland, who recommended me to focus on shoes. I have followed her advice ever since.

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_CH_MARCH16_BLAHNIK.indd 16

How did you learn your craft? MB: With very hard work. I am a very curious person and like to be constantly learning in life. My main goal is to achieve perfection, which is impossible.

I HAVE KEPT every shoe I HAVE EVER designed

Your big break came when you designed shoes for Ossie Clark. Tell us about that. What was he like? What were the shoes like? MB: When Ossie approached me I couldn’t believe it. It was my very first big opportunity and as you can imagine I was very nervous. For the occasion I designed an ankle strap round-toed shoe with a block heel and called the design ‘Ossie’. However it could have been my last job. I didn’t use steel to support the heel, so when the models where walking down the catwalk they were swinging and not very stable. I was completely shocked but as it turned out, everybody loved it. What a relief that was. What’s the enduring appeal of the high heel? MB: It’s sensuous, it’s elegant and makes your body move differently. A high heel is timeless and works always.

WHEN I see something I like I TRANSLATE IT IMMEDIATELY

into a shoe

Do you have a huge shoe archive? MB: I do indeed. I have kept all the shoes I designed over the years, they are everywhere - it is like living in a shoe jungle. For the last two years they have been collected in climate controlled storage. Your first shop remains in Chelsea, and you have just opened a new one in Burlington Arcade. Why another London shop? MB: My shop in Chelsea will always remain very special to me. I also want to design some exclusive styles that will only be available there. It is where it all began. I have been looking for many years to open another shop in central London, however I hadn't found the right space until now. I am very passionate and not business driven at all so I didn’t mind waiting and I didn’t have any deadline, until this incredible opportunity

What are you currently working on? MB: We are working on a documentary which will come our later this year. My friend, the director Michael Roberts, approached me some time ago with this idea and I said: why not? I feel very lucky to have some incredible people involved in the documentary and I am very much looking forward to see the result. was offered to me. Burlington Arcade has always been a reference to me. I remember going there the very first time I came to London – it was so captivating. And now almost 40 years later, I can’t believe I am having my own shop there. Burlington Arcade represents the England I love and want to be part of.

19 NH_CH_MARCH16_BLAHNIK.indd 19

What’s your most popular shoe? MB: I have many but I feel particularly attached to the ‘Ivy’ shoe from my beginning. I think it is the silhouette and design that is recognizable. The attention to balance and cut and the carefully selected materials is my special touch. ◆ manoloblahnik.com

The best thing about wearing it is that there are no rules,” says Chiaki Tanaka, London store manager. Prices for new generation kimono start from £500. Wasokan is particularly excited to launch its kimono separates to the European market. Currently the range comprises 40 silk jackets and skirts. “Not only are our separates a great gateway product for full kimono, they are also strong fashion pieces in their own right for people of every culture,” says Ikeda. T

he appeal of IPL or laser hair removal for me has always been rooted in laziness. Despite craving smooth legs and hairless underarms, the idea of shaving, waxing or otherwise ridding myself of this unwanted layer of insulation always seems expensive and a lot of bother for something that I have to deal with again, three weeks later. Enter the Panasonic ES-WH80 IPL Hair Removal System, the answer to if not prayer, then at least a few wishes. The Panasonic IPL, which can be used on the arms, underarms, legs and bikini line, uses Intense Pulsed Light to cause your hair to shed and to inhibit its regrowth. The more you use it, the lighter and thinner the hair grows back until it’s barely noticeable. For me, the advantages of this nifty handheld device are threefold. One, it can be used in the comfort of your own home. This means, no matter how hectic your schedule, you can fit in your hair-removal. Two, after the initial cost, you no longer have to pay for pricey treatments and products – you are your own salon. Three, and I cannot say this emphatically enough, it is pain-free. No more gripping the table and wincing while a professional takes out their pent up anger on your sensitive skin. After using the Panasonic IPL on my underarm hair for two months, I notice a significant decrease in regrowth and thickness and my skin is distinctly smooth. I would recommend this clever gadget for both convenience and effectiveness. ◆ ● PA N A S O N I C ES-WH80 IPL Hair Removal System, £349.99 boots.co.uk

Our resident perfume expert on the resurgence of lavender scents W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e

L

avender has long been a much maligned ingredient in perfume. Seen as dated and cloying, it reminds people of the old-fashioned notes of lavender in the talcum powder, drawer liners and bath cubes you inevitably find in your grandmother’s house. However, despite its use in perfumery for millennia, lavender should not be written off as old-fashioned. In fact, as fashion moves away from obviously synthesised scents to a resurgence of interest in more natural smelling notes, this relatively humble herb is back. There is also a lasting legacy from the fresh fragrances of the 1990s: Eau d’Issey is rightly credited with being a genre-defining scent, a departure from heavy florals and one that opened the door to the new wave of fresh ‘watery’ fragrances, soon followed by Calvin Klein’s unisex CK One, one of the best-selling scents of all time. Taking into consideration this lasting desire for clean smelling scents, what better than lavender, the plant that got its name from the Latin 1

2

LAVENDER should NOT BE written off as OLD FASHIONED verb lavare meaning ‘to wash’? Those having doubts about the new found fashion for lavender one need look no further than the collection of the king of cool himself: Tom Ford. The brand’s Lavender Palm [1] is a bright and sparkling scent that is both modern and wearable. Similarly, Lavender on the Rocks [2] by Atkinson’s 1799 is a double distillation of lavender, which has a steely, icy core. It might seem unlikely that a fragrance made by monks in Wales would be name-checked by Luca Turin, one of the world’s most famous perfumer writers – and yet, in his book Perfumes: The Guide, he describes Cadley Island Lavender Water as ‘simply the best lavender soliflore on Earth’. Lavandula [4] by Penhaligon’s, another unisex scent, enhances the spicy accords of lavender with top notes of cinnamon and pepper. Encens et Lavande [5] by Serge

43 DUL_March16_Perfume.indd 43

Lutens is a sophisticated blend of lavender and smoky incense. It's a combination that should appear more in perfumery – visually, the paring of wafts of purplish grey smoke and lilac-tinged grey flowers is a match made in heaven. One of the perennial problems faced by perfumers working with this plant and its derivative oils is longevity. Chris Bartlett has achieved the unusual with his brand’s Pell Wall’s Lasting Lavender. Bolstered by a base of ambergris, complex musks and sensuous wood accords, lavender is augmented by crushed violet leaves and a little rosemary. Delicious and a snip at just £15 for 30ml. Those at the forefront of bringing lavender back, however, are the Mitchells. Foxbury Farm in Kent has been in their family for five generations. Currently run by Jod and his father Ian, the pair planted lavender and the quality of the crop inspired them to produce their own product line. Their signature scent is delightful – Britishness at its best. Those who think they do not like lavender should try Mitchell & Peach [6]: fresh bright and sunny and just a tiny bit fruity. It is modern, wearable and not at all reminiscent of your grandmother’s house. u

I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT Jane Dowrick needed comfortable, stylish shoes for her son’s wedding - Foot Solutions had the answer

P

rimary school teacher Jane Dowrick wanted to look her best for her son’s wedding. Being a keen dancer she was also looking forward to stepping out onto the dancefloor. But she faced a problem. As Jane explains: “I can’t wear high heels for very long because I suffer from back and hip pain. To make matters worse, I also have a bunion.” However, she was determined to have a good time and decided to splash out on a new outfit for the day and a cocktail dress for the evening. Shoes were still a problem though. Unable to find anything

that combined comfort with style, Jane decided to visit Foot Solutions. “I’m so glad I did” continues Jane “To my delight, Foot Solutions had a great range of comfortable, fashionable heels. I chose a pair of gold Ziera shoes which were perfect. After a thorough assessment of my feet and my gait, staff recommended custom arch supports to wear with the shoes.” The combination of shoes and arch supports meant that Jane was ready for the big day. “I was the first one on the dancefloor… and the last one off,” says Jane. “I could have danced all night! The staff

at Foot Solutions were so helpful and professional. It was a genuinely lovely experience.” Contact the Richmond store on 020 8940 1814 to arrange a FREE foot analysis. 

Advanced techology for stunning skin from the West London Dermatology Centre in Chiswick

n recent years the number of cosmetic surgery treatments has decreased as new methods of non surgical treatment have increased significantly. A wide range of options are now available to those who want to look younger but without the risks and, in some cases, obvious signs of surgery. We look at a number of these treatments offered at West London Dermatology Centre.

BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS

u Now well established these injectable procedures are the most popular in

the non surgical market. The injection contains a very small amount of toxin that locally weakens the muscle in the face to soften frown lines and wrinkles with a remarkable smoothing effect on the skin. Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are used where collagen levels have depleted to ‘refill’ and plump the skin, also smoothing out lines.

LASERS AND INTENSE PULSED LIGHT

u A less invasive approach is the use of laser or Intense Pulsed Light. The Regenlite laser at West London Dermatology Centre has been proven

47 CHIS_April16_SLIM_GYM_adv.indd 47

u Exfoliating the dead skin cells at the surface of the skin can be achieved by either mechanical exfoliation using diamonds or crystals or by a fruit acid peel. This level of exfoliation leaves the skin surface smooth and promotes accelerated turnover of skin cells allowing new fresh more youthful skin to the surface. It can also help clear out congestions in the pores. The Fusion Facial system at West London Dermatology Centre combines diamond exfoliation, ultrasonic infusion of hyaluronic acid and low level laser for collagen production to deliver immediate rejuvenating results in one hour

COSMECEUTICAL SKINCARE

u Medical Grade skincare contains high levels of active ingredients that deliver results. Formulated to target specific skin concerns such as acne, ageing and pigmentation, the correct regimen and skincare can on its own achieve remarkable results restoring the skin’s health and vitality. The Skinova range contains high levels of antioxidants but without the harmful elements such as parabens, chemicals, sulphates and preservatives that you find in other skincare.

CONSULTATION

Often optimal results are achieved by a combination of the above and the experienced team at West London Dermatology Centre can advise on an appropriate programme to suit your skin and your goals. The contemporary approach at this clinic is for everyone who wants to look and feel good about their skin. 

A GREAT MATCH Wine & Food Pairings for the Month of April B y J a n e Pa r k i n s o n

WILD GARLIC SOUP

he delicious tangy flavour of new season wild garlic is captured at its best in a simple soup; and a white that isn’t too dramatic in flavour but lively and crisp really respects the soup. Northern Italy is a haven for such wines and this one from Lugana would be terrific. ● Zenato Villa Floral Lugana 2014 £9.99, waitrose.com

T

HALIBUT & MASHED POTATO

ish and Chablis is as classic a match as you can get, but a meatytextured fish such as halibut shouldn’t be paired with any wallflower Chablis – it needs something with personality. This has fleshy peachy roundness as well as a cool blade of lemony freshness. ● Samuel Billaud Chablis Les Grands Terroirs 2014, £12.95, thewinesociety.com

F

PASSION FRUIT PANNA COTTA

he exotic flavour of passion fruit screams out for something equally ripe and vibrant in flavour. This Chilean sweet wine is a serious bargain. Made with the Moscatel grape, it’s pungent with lavender aromas while the tropical flavours make it a heavenly match here. ● Vistamar Late Harvest Moscatel 2015, £6.99 (37.5cl), majestic.co.uk

FOOD & DRINK / REVIEWS

The CoMMander So much more than a high class pub Wo r d s P e a r l b o y d

s his the only pub in west London to have its own champagne room? The Commander is part chic brasserie, part Victorian watering hole with its original bar features and tiles, alongside an oyster bar, champagne room and modern open kitchen. We’re here for Sunday lunch and there’s a friendly, relaxed vibe with locals and families in the spacious dining area. In our front booth we stretch out and order oysters, a dozen Blackwater Wilds, which prove to be juicy, fresh and plump. A scallop, pancetta and colcannon mash starter is well executed and tasty, laced with red wine jus and touches of white pudding. Then it’s Welsh lamb from the Sunday roast list, which comes with an outsize Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, sweet potato mash and broccoli as well as roast potatoes and cauliflower – it’s a generous spread and just right. A whole Canadian lobster comes with breadcrumbs and stilton cream sauce, looking impressive and tasting good, if slightly generous on the breadcrumbs. A kids’ portion of roast beef comes at almost the size of a regular one – this restaurant offers a crèche at weekends, a welcome option for those with toddlers (though that’s not to say this is an exclusively family-oriented place; children must vacate by 7pm on weekends and 5pm during the week). Puddings are impressive and decadent – we manage a chocolate fondant and a peanut butter cheesecake, each of them moreish and high class. A walk around Kensington Gardens is most definitely in order after this. ◆

The Art Of Craft The Italian Job’s craft beers are flavour of the month Wo r d s H a n n a h C l a r e

T

he Italian Job opened a year ago on Devonshire Road with a clear mission: to introduce Italian craft beer to the UK market. And though there's no shortage of excellent native craft beers already available, it is an exciting new arrival. A board by the bar specifies 12 rotating beers you can sample – intriguingly, we don’t recognise a single one. Staff are happy to select options based on our particular tastes and their selections are spot on. The Verdi, a dark stout brewed with chilli has chocolaty overtones; a Via Emilia is very aromatic and New Morning is surprisingly packed with spices. Foodwise, we immediately notice that the boards are where the really interesting fare is offered. The standard menu, available every day, lists a substantial yet simple choice of burgers, nibbles and sharing platters, but on seeing the enticing specials we opt mostly for those. Starters are stuffed

courgettes from the specials and a smaller platter of salumi misti di parma. Both are delicious: perfectly cooked courgettes are stuffed with a smooth blend of venison and truffle and topped with delicate truffle shavings, and the saulmi misti is generous. Mains are excellent too: plate beef ribs marinated in AFO beer with gorgonzola polenta is rich and well-balanced; creamy polenta has a lovely bite from the gorgonzola and perfectly complements the marinated meat, which slides off the bone. Our ribeye steak with chips is cooked perfectly to medium rare. As a bit of fun to finish, the staff produce tasters of some more unusual sour beers – and let's just say that many of them are very much acquired tastes. The Italian Job feels elegant and fashionable. We’ll see you there next Friday. ◆

PROMISE For pristine beaches, a rich culture, and some of the best food in the country, head to Sri Lanka’s unspoiled east coast W o r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

S

ri Lanka’s history is a turbulent one. Years of civil war and environmental disasters could have left the country in dire straits, and while the political situation is far from stable – corruption is still a problem and cultural tensions run high – the fascinating history, ecological abundance, and beauty of the island has kept it on numerous travel hotlists. In recent years, the country has become a top destination, but rocky terrains and little investment in the east coast means that foreign feet have rarely strayed far from the country’s capital, Colombo. Typical traveling routes don't stray far from the lush, culturally rich region of Kandy in the Central Province, where the ancient monarchy once ruled, and Galle in the southwest, which offers a stellar combination of seaside bliss and an opulent cultural heritage. Sure, these

destinations are beautiful and make for a wonderful traveling experience, but there is more to Sri Lanka, and it lies on the east coast. Sri Lanka’s civil war, a battle that spanned 25 years, divided the country, seeing the east coast abandoned by all economic and touristic infrastructures after being left devastated by intense fighting between the Tamils and Sinhalese. With its largely Tamil and Muslim population, the east coast fell into what seemed like a state of disrepair. Tourism was shot, and with it the influx of money brought to the region by foreign investment diminished. Since the war finally ended in 2009, venture in the province has gradually improved and reconstruction is well under way. A glut of new resorts is under development along the area’s most desirable stretch of coastline, Passekudah Bay. One of the first to open here was five-star resort Sun Aqua Pasikudah at the end of 2014.

PRIVATE VILLA AT SUN AQUA PASIKUDAH

SUN AQUA PASIKUDAH POOL

Getting to the hotel isn’t as easy as it is to get to hotels on the western province, so hopping on a seaplane when you arrive in Colombo is probably your best bet, taking in some of the most breathtaking views over the undulating landscape. Arriving in Batticaloa you will see bullet-riddled shacks and collateral from the shattering 2004 tsunami. These remains offer a harrowing insight into the hard reality people in this territory faced during the conflict. A quick 20-minute drive from the seaplane reservoir and you’re at the resort, enjoying a warm Sri Lankan welcome. The main building is surrounded by private villas, which all sit facing the azure Indian Ocean. Each building houses a large bed, private outside area and al fresco bathroom area, with some even boasting

BE SURE TO TAKE A MAGICAL MIDNIGHT DIP

their own plunge pools. If you’re lucky enough to bag one of these, be sure to take a magical midnight dip for a spot of stargazing. The grounds are home to a gym and beauty salon, the holistic Sun Aqua Spa, and a large granite swimming pool which faces onto the beach. The long stretch of golden sand boasts the longest shallow coastline on the island of Sri Lanka and shares the same water as the neighbouring Maldives - so you know you’re in good company. Another big draw at Sun Aqua Pasikudah is the food. Gourmet cuisine from around the world is available (you can have eggs benedict for breakfast, for example) but it’s the traditional Sri Lankan cuisine you want to save your appetite for. Local ingredients are used where possible, with many vegetables and herbs grown in the hotel’s gardens. There are five dining options: our favourites are Latitude for all-day casual al fresco dining, and the Pavilion, which houses a glass-enclosed wine cellar and is ideal for a private celebratory THE MADURU OYA dinner. The lunchtime buffet at NATIONAL PARK the former is quite something –

63 CHIS_April16_SRI LANKA_USE.indd 63

expect a spread of spicy Sri Lankan curries, enormous prawns, roti, dhal, gotu kola mallung (a salad of chillies, ginger, shallots and freshly grated coconut), eggplant moju (deep-fried aubergine with chilli, mustard seeds, cloves and ginger), all finished with bowls of exotic fresh fruit. While the resort offers plenty of activities to keep you entertained for well over a week – scuba diving, volleyball, eating and lying in the sun are just some of the activities you can partake in – a trip to the local sights is well worth pulling yourself away from the sun lounger and frozen strawberry daiquiris for. A must-do is an excursion to the Maduru Oya National Park, where you’ll likely spot everything from wild boars and water buffalo to the enormous Sri Lankan elephant. Another expedition worth considering is a trip to Dambana to visit the last remaining tribe of Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, the Vedda (which translates as “hunter” in Tamil). While there’s not much to see other than the villagers going about their everyday tasks, there is also a museum with more details about the culture of the Vedda people. The service, style and attention to details at Sun Aqua is exceptional, so while you’ll discover a whole new world, with it will be all the luxury comforts you could hope for. A trip to remember indeed. u

THE HALL

T

he hall in my city apartment is miles apart from the hall in my house in the country – and I don’t just mean geographically. For one thing, it’s smaller, but the real difference is in the colours. Here, in town, the look is darker and more dramatic, with the walls painted in a robust shade of chestnut, which is offset by white woodwork. Halls are very much ‘first impression’ spaces, so you need to think carefully about what sort of effect you are after – and stick to it. If you want something strong, as I did here, it’s no good cluttering the place up with bits and pieces, so I have used only two pieces of furniture, both with good shapes, and two large, arresting pictures, plus a natural sculpture. I say ‘natural’ because it is, in fact, a single piece of petrified ebony. As

74 04/03/2016 11:29

HOMES & INTERIORS / SPOTLIGHT

the subjects of the pictures have ‘woody’ associations, and the base of the table looks like twisted branches, there is a strong theme going on here.

THE DRAWING ROOM

T

his room has a smart, rather architectural feel, due to some extent to the graphic form of the new chimneypieces at each end of the room. Plentiful, natural light comes through the two tall windows and the shorter windows in the bay. The different heights of the windows determined different treatments – curtains for the tall openings and roman blinds for the lower ones – but all in the same silk jacquard. The rich macchiato shade used for the walls is a strong foil for the lime greens and terracottas that predominate in most of the soft furnishings.

THE DINING ROOM

T

he dining room is the apartment’s central axis, with five doors of different sizes leading off it, plus a window awkwardly placed in one corner. So

many openings gave the space a rather disjointed appearance, and it was obvious that something was needed to pull the whole thing together, so we lined the entire perimeter – walls and doors alike – with plain, painted panelling, as a form of disguise. In our re-arrangement of the layout of the apartment, the drawing room leads off the dining room and I felt it was important to give significance to this entrance by introducing full-height, double doors here. There is another advantage: when the doors are open during the day, masses of borrowed, natural light comes through to the dining room from the drawing room.

01 Typically in a room of this period, the chimneybreast breaks forward, creating recesses to either side that lend themselves perfectly to shelves. Built-in ‘units’ – the sort with cupboards in the lower half – could look too traditional (and predictable!) if you are aiming for an up-to-date feel: chunky, timber shelves, pure and simple, are better. Above the chimneypiece is a painting of a woman, by Fred Yates, from 1965. 02 The table is mid-nineteenth-century Scandinavian with a later, hand-hewn limestone top. Above the natural sculpture of petrified ebony is ‘The Woodcutter’, a painting by Somerset artist John Caple. 03 Above the chimneypiece at the bay end of the room is another painting by Fred Yates, this one executed some 35 years later than ‘Bessie in the Blue Hat’. Fancifully, I sometimes think the expressions on the faces of the characters are a reaction to the room’s mix of furniture, which includes an Egyptian-revival stool, made by Liberty in the 1920s, a pair of 1840s fruitwood armchairs and a mid-twentieth-century, Danish rosewood chair. 04 The table is set with wooden plates, the surface of which has been covered with fragments of dyed eggshell, then lacquered. They were made in Vietnam, a long way from the source of the glasses by Venetian designer Carlo Moretti.,

THE KITCHEN

I

f you like cooking, the chances are that you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so it has to be a pleasant room to be in. One of the things I like most about this room is the floor, which is laid with linoleum hand-cut to a design taken from a 1930s headscarf. The pattern is very bold but the geometry is controlled, with a series of circles contained within a regular grid, so the overall effect isn’t disturbing. There is only one significant piece of ‘art’ in the room – a poster advertising the premiere in Milan of Some Like it Hot. From the point of view of cooking, there is everything we need to rustle up an enjoyable meal, but the room doesn’t – thank goodness – have the air of a hardedged ‘professional’ kitchen with acres of stainless steel. u

Quite a character Absolutely meets Lord O’Shaughnessy, one of the architects of Tory education reforms, to hear about his new chain of free schools Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

W

hat do you do once you’ve worked at the very heart of David Cameron’s government as one of the architects of the Tories’ education reforms and then been appointed to the House of Lords as a thank you? Well, you start your own chain of schools, of course. That’s what Lord O’Shaughnessy has done, founding Floreat Education in 2012. After years of working in politics and policy at Number 10, paving the way for academies and free schools, Lord O’Shaughnessy says: “I needed to get my hands dirty in the education sector and set up something new and good.” Floreat Education is a chain of primary free schools in the west London area. Two are already open, in Wandsworth and Brentford, and three more are expected to open this September. “The idea for Floreat has been a long time in the making,” says O’Shaughnessy. The schools are based on the principles of character education, emphasising the pupil’s character strengths as well as rigorous academic study. “We believe character education can be both ‘taught’ and ‘caught’,” says O’Shaughnessy. Extra-curricular activities such as sport and the Duke of Edinburgh Award are classic ways to ‘catch’ character education, but where Floreat is different is that it formally teaches its pupils character traits and what it is to be a good person. Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 follow a Character Virtue Development Programme designed to develop their virtues of curiosity, honesty, perseverance and service to others, the

YOU DEVELOP

your mind but you also DEVELOP

YOUR MORALS

four core values at Floreat. “It is a very classical education, you develop your mind but you also develop your morals,” says Lord O’Shaughnessy. “This balance between what the Greeks call ‘practical wisdom’ has been the undisputed standard of education for the last 2000 years… It’s only been in the last few decades that we have swung between a very child-centred model and a very standards-only model,” he says. O’Shaughnessy left his job as the Director of Policy and Research for the Prime Minister David Cameron in 2011. He then spent a year at his alma mater, Wellington College, working with the then head Anthony Seldon. “Having Anthony as a mentor and guide was wonderful,” he says, adding that he was very influenced by his time at the school. “The emphasis on character and wellbeing [at Wellington] is at the very

81 CHIS_April16_Education.indd 81

heart of Floreat,” he says. O’Shaughnessy stresses that a character education doesn’t come instead of an academic education but alongside it. “We pursue a knowledgerich academic curriculum”, he says. Indeed, expectations of the children at Floreat are sky high. “We are definitely more formal than any other schools but we are not Gradgrindian,” he says. In his view, “too many schools have an unambitious view of what children are capable of”. With three young children of his own, he says he sees how much children can achieve at a young age. The key when it comes to teaching them, he says, is to make it stretching for the child, “but in a way that is enjoyable” and importantly, “the earlier you start, the less stressful it is”. As one of the key thinkers behind Tory reforms on free schools, it isn’t surprising that O’Shaughnessy is a huge supporter of schools free from local authority control. “Free schools are a way of closing that gap between private and state schools”, he says. “I’ve been living and breathing it.” The future for Floreat is bright. The plan is to create a family of primary schools in the west London area, but to steer clear of secondary schools for the time being (“until we are good at one thing”, he says). His main focus for the next six months is fundraising. “Our ambition is to create world-class schools, and that requires investment,” he says. Since being elevated to the Lords last October, O’Shaughnessy has had to hand over the day-to-day running of the schools – “but,” he laughs, and says despite this, his “hands still seem to be quite dirty”. ◆ floreat.org.uk

PROPERTY / NEW TO THE MARKET

LONDON’S PRIME INVESTMENT RISERS

R

ecent tax changes have been heralded as a potential death knell for property investment in London’s prime neighbourhoods. But is that really true? We take the measure of the market. The fourth of December 2014 is not a date many who invest in London’s prime property would like to recall. During the Autumn statement that year, Chancellor George Osborne had announced a new way of calculating Stamp Duty

parts of prime central London are still struggling as fresh Stamp Duty changes just for buy-to-let property buyers (an extra 3%) are set to kick in in April this year. Both the 2014 and most recent measures are putting off international buyers in particular and who make up a third of all purchases in these areas, the company says. This has split London in two. On the one hand are the superprime areas where asking prices are still very ‘soft’ (as agents like to say) while the outer prime areas away from central London

that increased the tax bill for anyone buying a home over £500,000 by at least £15,000 and the new rules kicked in three months later. Agent Marsh and Parsons says that between September 2014 (when it was announced) and March 2015, the new system stalled both the number of homes sold in London’s prime market and pushed down prices. If you look at the Marsh and Parsons figures then although house prices in prime London have dropped over the past year, they are starting to pick up again. But some

For example, their research highlights the 17 prime areas of the capital where house prices are increasing fastest. grew up in a picture I postcard village called Brill on the Oxfordshire/ Buckinghamshire border. Growing up in the countryside fed my love for animals, and when I was younger I wanted to be a vet anything that stood still long enough would be bandaged like a mummy in no time. Before I worked in estate agency, I ran a livery yard full of very high maintenance and expensive event horses. After breaking too many bones, and getting fed up with being cold, wet and covered in mud all the time, I decided to move to London and see what opportunities it held. I’d always had an interest in houses, particularly listed and period properties; the history and stories behind them fascinate me. Knowing this, my brother, who was working in recruitment at the time, sent me for an interview with a lovely independent firm in Fulham. They offered me the job as Lettings Negotiator and it went from there. I have been with Bective Leslie Marsh in Brook Green for six years now and I honestly think I enjoy it more and more every day. I have met some fascinating people, seen some incredible

s a child, I wanted to be a criminal lawyer. Coming from a family of lawyers and having an uncle who featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s 'most successful lawyer', I thought it seemed fitting. That didn’t last for very long and after finishing school, I went on to do a degree in Hospitality Management which taught me a lot and gave me four very fun years including six eye opening months in Chicago. It didn’t take long for the tiresome hours of the hotel industry to take its toll and I soon stumbled across a great A

independent, family run estate agent in Dublin. I had an interest in property from an early age. Having moved house a number of times throughout my childhood, I vividly remember the days of house hunting with my parents and the exciting build of one of our homes. My dad often tells me that one of my most used phrases as a child was “you could do a lot with that house”. Having grown up in Dublin’s fair city, I made the exciting move to London in 2009 and am now into my eighth year with Bective in Brook Green. The area reminds me a lot of Ireland, with its strong sense of community. It tends to attract people who want to be involved in the community which is very much in line with Bective’s culture. I love the unique blend of boutique stores, gastro pubs and independent coffee shops and restaurants. The 2015 sales market was a bit of a mixed bag, yet despite the challenging climate we had an extremely busy and productive year. This year is already looking to be much the same and we have already seen competitive bidding on many sales this year. As always, accurate and strategic pricing along with local knowledge and expertise is essential. u
