have a confession to make: I don’t like the X Factor. In fact, I’ve never sat through an entire episode. It’s the same old tiresome sob stories and mediocre winners who fade into obscurity six months after the show has fi nished, only for the whole process to start all over again. However, I do have an enduring admiration for Leona Lewis, who truly broke the reality star mould without biting the hand that feeds. Helen Baron talks to the east end girl as she prepares to headline Kew the Music (page 25) and discovers a sweet, engaging and seriously talented starlet with her feet fi rmly on the ground. How refreshing amongst pop music’s sea of precocious prima donnas and divas. Elsewhere in the magazine, we take a peek at the extraordinary and previously unpublished photographs of Kew Gardens in its infancy, lovingly restored and compiled for a new book, The Story of Kew Gardens in Photographs. We also chat with Protégé founder Sabita Kumari-Dass on page 23 about her alternative approach to education and future plans at the Hill Rise gallery-cum-boutique.

If you’re heading off on holiday this month, have a wonderful time (and stock up on some summer beauty essentials on page 41) and I hope you enjoy this issue.

by Lucy Clarke

Richard & Judy have selected Lucy Clarke’s debut novel as a 2013 Summer Book Club read, and it’s easy to see why. The Sea Sisters tells the story of Katie, whose sedate world is turned upsidedown upon learning the news that her younger sister, Mia, has been found dead in Bali – and the local police suggest it was suicide. Katie begins the heartwrenching task of piecing together the last few months of her free-spirited sister’s life and the mystery surrounding her death using only her journal entries – and what she uncovers changes everything. Hammersmith-based author Alice Peterson follows-up her hit novel Monday To Friday Man with By My Side, a poignant story of a young woman’s life thrown into disarray after she is paralysed. Overnight, her hopes and dreams for the future appear to be over, but then she’s introduced to Ticket, a Golden Labrador who refuses to leave her side. Peterson regularly explores the theme of disability in her writing, inspired by her personal experiences after a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis cut short her career as a professional tennis player. The delicate and often neglected issues of living with disability are portrayed with honesty, integrity and even a touch of humour. Published on July 18 by Quercus

THE OTHER TYPIST

by Suzanne Rindell

COLIN TURNER EXHIBITION

9-21 JULY

THE FOUNTAIN GALLERY

The River Thames, once the lifeline to an industrial Empire, drifted into decline but the memories and landmarks of the one time busiest port in the world, still remain. Colin Turner has endeavoured to capture the echoes left imprinted on the banks by the dilapidated docks, from the pastoral river setting of Richmond to the heart of the port at the Pool of London. fountaingallery.co.uk

The glitz and glamour of the 1920s is currently all the rage, thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, and The Other Typist throws us straight into the heady, gin-soaked world of New York City in 1925. But, just as F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel dealt with themes of the American Dream gone awry, Suzanne Rindell’s story looks beneath the sparkle of the Roaring Twenties. Our protagonist Rose is a shy young woman whose job sees her record the crimes of the gangsters who pass through the police precinct where she works. Her life changes, however, after the beguiling, confident Odalie is hired – the eponymous other typist – and Rose becomes entwined in her expensive lifestyle and the illegal means through which she maintains it. BLUE PLAQUE OF THE MONTH: CAPABILITY BROWN

Wilderness House, Moat Lane, Hampton Court Palace, KT8 Considered the master of landscape architecture, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown designed gardens on a grand scale, sweeping away the previous school of formality and fashioning the landscape of many a stately home to a more naturalistic composition. Brown’s gardens were the height of fashion in the 18th century, and his unusual nickname is derived from the fact that he would tell his clients that their land had great ‘capability’. 13

Kew Gardens archivist and records manager, Kiri Ross-Jones, and assistant curator of arts and artefacts, Lynn Parker, have put together this stunning new book detailing England’s most famous gardens and its fascinating history through over 250 beautiful and mostly previously unpublished photographs. The book is separated into seven sections, documenting the garden’s growth and cultural significance in Britain and abroad since its inception. Collating the archive material has been a labour of love – many of the images had yet to be explored in detail and lacked proper information and captions. Judging by these stunning extracts, however, it would be safe to say that their efforts were certainly not in vain. State-funded boarding schools are back in fashion with Eton’s headmaster leading the way, reports Amanda Constance

he English boarding school. For many, it’s a term that conjures up Dickensian institutions where the upper classes send their offspring to be trussed up in top hats and tails, deprived of love and decent food, before they are released, years later, to run the country. Tony Little wouldn’t agree. The headmaster of Eton College is a vociferous advocate of a form of schooling that many regard as archaic. He believes that boarding encourages the development of both self-confidence and a sense of purpose. Though few would argue an Eton education is the best money can buy, the money in question is an awful lot, with basic annual fees coming in at more than £32,000. But Little believes state-funded boarding schools can deliver much of what Eton can – and for far less money. To that end, he is currently in talks with ministers about the creation of a national network of state boarding schools. ‘In Britain, we have an internationally recognized approach to education through boarding. In the state sector, it has only been in the last year or so that there has been a growing realisation of how well this can work for young people. I think we would benefit nationally from having a good quality boarding network across the country, close to where young people live. With such a network, there’s a good chance exam results would go up.’ At present, there are 34 state boarding schools in Britain. The buzz about

opening more can be seen in the marked rise in applications for boarding status from academies, educational charities and free schools. In the first four months of 2013, the State Boarding Schools’ Association (SBSA) said it had received more than 20 applications from those interested in opening new institutions. This compares with just one application a year in the past five years. These new schools differ from traditional feepaying boarding schools by charging only the cost of boarding, reducing the demands on parents’ bank accounts from an average of £30k a year to a more manageable £10k. According to Janette Wallis, senior editor of the Good Schools Guide, the recession is forcing cash-strapped parents to shop around and many ‘feel there are better state opportunities available than in the past.’ Ten thousand a year is still a substantial outlay but it often cancels out childcare costs. There is also a recognition that boarding has changed dramatically from the days of ‘fagging’ and flogging. The new, modern institutions take pastoral care as seriously as academic achievement and most offer weekly boarding. And this arrangement can work well for 21st century families. Hillary Moriarty, director of the Boarding Schools’ Association, suggests that changes to parents working lives have increased the appeal of boarding. ‘It is an attractive proposition for many families, particularly if mum and dad both work. It creates the

idea of “On Monday we all go to work, see you on Friday.” If you’re on a train at 7am, get home at 7.30 or 8pm, there’s very little time for the kind of ideal vision of family life that we had 30 years ago.” Three academies opened boarding facilities last year, with five more announcing plans to do the same. The Wellington Academy in Tidworth, Wiltshire, sponsored by the £30,000-a-year Wellington College, also offered boarding places to 100 pupils in 2012. And Durand Academy in Stockwell, south-London, has plans to open a £17m ‘Eton of the state sector’ for 600 innercity pupils in the village of Stedham, West Sussex. And next September, Eton will open Holyport College, the first free school sponsored by and modelled on Eton, in the village of Holyport, near Maidenhead, Berkshire. Eight miles away from Eton itself, it will eventually take 225 boarders and 275 day pupils, who will use many of Eton’s facilities, including its magnificent sports grounds. Not surprisingly, more than 700 families have registered their children – even though some are only two years old. ‘If I could bottle it, what I want to come out of Holyport is exactly what I see here [at Eton],’ says Tony Little, ‘young people coming out with this sense of self worth who are going to be engaged citizens, who believe in the are of the possible, roll up their sleeves and get things done.’ For more information visit sbsa.org.uk 19

The Right Direction Absolutely talks to David Wellesley Wesley about inspiration, imagination and The Independent Schools Show

So, what exactly made you launch the ISS? It was actually the result of chance encounter with my old school in 2006. That, and an obvious lack of information for parents when choosing the right school for their child. League tables had far too much influence and prospectuses all seemed to say the same thing. I wanted to do something that would change this. How does the ISS help potential parents make their decision? Firstly, ‘The Theatre’ provides lessons in education – we create talks which are of maximum value to parents themselves. Secondly, there’s the ‘Wise Heads’ area, which provides free, independent and impartial advice on all pedagogical matters. Finally, and probably best of all, representatives from each of the 170 exhibiting schools are there for parents to talk with faceto-face. It’s especially good for busy parents, as all your questions can be answered quickly under one roof.

What was your personal experience of school life? I started off at The Mall School in Twickenham, before moving to Ashdown House at the age of eight, and The Kings School, Canterbury, at 13. I loved them all. Personally, I don’t think London is the best place for teenagers, so I’m a firm believer in weekly boarding at that stage. Not only does it let you fit in vast amounts in a school day, but you’re also surrounded by all of your best friends. It’s a great way to nurture a child’s interests, confidence and imagination. How has the show developed and what can we expect this year? New for 2013 is the London Schools Pavilion, a selection of leading local nursery schools and pre-preps. In fact, each year we attract a finer selection of school options. For instance, this year Winchester and Eton are coming for the first time. We are very excited to have such a wide range of prestigious schools on board.

What will be the next big education trend? ‘Teaching in the round’ – that is to say, teaching in smaller groups with far more student-teacher interaction. I’m also expecting to see a reduction in final exam assessments and an increase in continuous assessment, much like the GPA system in the US. And finally, what do you hope parents will take away from a day at ISS? I would hope that they’d find attractive solutions to London’s crazily competitive places. There’s a vast amount of schools on offer, each with a different curriculum and ethos. Consider alternative options – a different route isn’t necessarily a bad one. For example, two siblings may well attend completely different schools and then converge at university level. It’s worth having an open mind. David Wellesley Wesley is founder of The Independent Schools Show; schoolsshow.com

A Lesson in Education

Education is the greatest gift, but it’s also a massive responsibility. The Independent Schools Show is here to help. With over 170 schools exhibiting, it’s a great way to consider your options and get your questions answered. Meet the head teachers, learn from leading teachers at the Education Theatre or join the debate in the interactive zone. Come along on 9-10 November 2013 and start planning your child’s future at the world’s largest school assembly. schoolsshow.com 21

PROMOTION

Vacuum packed Does the Vacuwell slimming machine really work, or is this another fad slimming solution?

H

ere we go again; another ‘miracle’ slimming machine that claims to reduce your cellulite and weight in 10 days. I have to say that when I heard about the Vacuwell slimming machine, I was sceptical. I have tried many different diets and slimming fads. I have even invented my own special diet juices and soups; needless to say I hate soup at the moment. I then became a gym fanatic. I was there almost 7 days a week between 1 ½ and 2 ½ hours before work every day. I would get up so early to go to the gym that by the time the evening came I would be so exhausted. I would be in bed by 8 and sleeping by 8.30 pm. The life I was living was impractical. I would rather not go out as it would interfere with my gym schedule and I wouldn’t want to eat out with family and friends in case I put on weight. Weight loss and being slim was becoming an obsession. Once I got in a relationship, my gym lifestyle was becoming almost increasingly difficult to maintain as we were always out and about, and in the mornings I didn’t want to be getting up at 5 o’clock and leave him sleeping. The weight began to creep on even though I did try to keep going to the gym. However, I began to think ,‘Is this the only way I can keep the weight loss off, by spending on average about 14 hours a week at the gym?’ I heard about this machine (Vacuwell) and how it was being used extensively throughout Europe (why are we always the last to know?) I was told that I could drop a dress size in roughly 10 sessions. I was like, ‘What the hell, I’ve spent money wrapping myself in seaweed, covering myself in mud; drinking nothing but soup to lose weight; slept in a tight corset and measured all my food. I thought, what have I got to lose.’ To be honest I was very sceptical, but other than inches I had nothing to lose so I paid for 10 sessions. Besides, it was only meant to be gentle walking for 30 minutes in a weight loss vacuum chamber. I have to say it wasn’t too taxing; the only difficulty was how I could fit in the 30 minutes a day as this place was further away from home than my gym. During a Vacuwell session, fat is burnt 3 times faster than conventional methods. In order to reshape and redefine the body, the Vacuwell machine targets only the key problem areas (stomach, waist, buttock and thighs). Even with an intensive fitness regime or dieting, it can still be difficult to lose fat from key areas of the body. This is because, scientifically, your body tends to only burn fat from places that it can easily access. In areas where circulation is poor (stomach, waist, buttock and thighs), it is difficult for body fat to be burnt. Vacuwell works by combining gentle walking and vacuum therapy from the waist

downwards. This produces an effective fat burning treatment and causes a concentrated fat breakdown to take place in precisely the cellulite and fat prone areas of the hips, thighs and buttocks. The Vacu-Training is revolutionary. It eliminates cellulite and burns fat through the unique combination of gentle exercise and targeted low atmospheric pressure. Low atmospheric pressure increases the blood supply and encourages circulation to the cellulite and fat prone areas; ensuring the primary fuel used during the gentle exercise of the therapy is from the stubborn fatty parts of the body. Cellulite and fat disappears, while the hips, thighs and buttocks are reshaped, giving amazing results and renewed body confidence. Vacuwell improves blood and lymph circulation Accelerates the burning of fatty acid  Restores skin smoothness and firmness  Eliminates ‘orange peel’ effect (cellulite)  Gently shapes the body and improves the aesthetic appearance of the skin and body  

At first I didn’t notice much, but my partner noticed the improvement in the appearance of cellulite after about 3 days. He was impressed. My body began to look and feel different. I was gently walking while watching a video or listening to music, it wasn’t hard. At the end of the session I found, to my amazement, that I’d lost in total 8 ½ inches. I actually didn’t feel like I lost anything until my therapist took my measurements. Also when I put my jeans on there was a difference. I still have a way to go, but the most important thing is I am getting there. The Vacuwell machine definitely fits into my lifestyle and I know that it works. This is why I have bought the Vacuwell machine to Teddington High Street. I wanted to help other people who, like me, want to find something that works for them. I have been inundated with calls and bookings and I’m proud that I am helping others find good, reliable alternative slimming solutions as I know this can be hard. An alternative approach Protégé showcases the work of talented young graduates and helps to get young people back into education. Gemma Billington meets founder Sabita Kumari-Dass

I

f we were in Shoreditch we wouldn’t stand out,’ says Sabita Kumari-Dass, the elegant, softly spoken founder of Protégé, with a smile. ‘There is a sense of, “what’s this doing in Richmond?”, Which is great.’ We’re chatting in the petite gallery-cumworkspace on a glorious summer’s day, which only accentuates the beauty of its location on Hill Rise. Many curious faces peer through the windows and some venture inside for a tentative browse. Protégé opened in October last year and the feedback has been fantastic, but, even as Sabita notes that her neighbours are now used to them, I’m desperate to know: what exactly is it? ‘The heart of Protégé is kind of a response to the need that exists in education,’ she explains, ‘it’s a recognition that some young people can still learn even though the education system has effectively turned its back on them.’ The charitable initiative focuses on young people who have been excluded from mainstream education though it is not, Sabita insists, an attempt to revolutionise the system or an attack on it. ‘Teachers can only do so much.’ She acknowledges, ‘schools are under so much pressure

and it is so hard for a teacher to address the needs of every child.’ The idea for Protégé came about during a time when Sabita worked on a series of exhibitions on Leonardo Da Vinci at Central St Martins College. ‘I started imagining what Leonardo would make of what we were doing and I thought, “he wouldn’t even be here, he would have got kicked out of class!”’ Look back in history and you may be surprised by the number of drop-outs who eschewed the traditional education system or were excluded from it, yet who went on to achieve incredible success. From Einstein to Edison and Mozart, and in more modern times Richard Branson and the late Steve Jobs. I ask who, out of all these famous rebels, does she find

her students relate to the most? ‘Bob Marley,’ she says without skipping a beat: ‘from the very rich kids to the ones living on estates, it’s Bob Marley. It’s lovely that they all share that.’ Students at Protégé are taught by artists instead of ‘teachers’ – normally recent graduates – who assist them in a particular skill and project. The art that fills the gallery is a mixture of work made by the students alongside art from the graduates themselves. The recruiting process is quite strict, but Sabita holds empathy for the students above all other qualities. With such an emphasis on the arts, I’m surprised at Sabita’s response when I ask if she believes that creativity is the key to education. ‘No, I don’t actually. I think continuity and support are more important than being creative. ’ During our conversation I can’t help but notice the scores of children skipping home from school without a care in the world. It’s good to know that, for those of them who may fall through the cracks, that something like this exists. Protégé’s funders are: Arts Council, John Lyon’s Charity, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation. protegetv.co.uk 23

I

was excited to speak to Leona Lewis – if you weren’t already aware, she’s a pretty big deal. Seven years have passed since she won the third series of X Factor, and Simon Cowell’s protégé remains the best example of what can happen when reality shows go right. In fact, Lewis is the poster girl for every wannabe who hangs his or her hopes of stardom on the public’s ferocious appetite for talent show veterans. It’s surprising to be reminded just how steep Leona’s ascent has been, especially in comparison to other winners of the show. Where are Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward and Joe McElderry now? Alexandra Burke and Little Mix have had hits but neither have crossed over like Lewis. Only fellow X Factor alumni One Direction have reached similar levels of success, and the differentiating factor is clear: Lewis and 1D cracked America; the others did not. Indeed, Lewis became the first British female in over two decades to top the American charts with her single, Bleeding Love (while at the same time holding the number one position in the UK): not bad for a girl from east London. Though chart positions are taken a little less seriously these days, for a talent show winner turned pop princess with considerable TV exposure, the figures still reign supreme, and Leona Lewis can boast some pretty impressive figures. Following the success of Bleeding Love (released on Simon Cowell’s own label, Syco), Leona’s debut album, Spirit, became the fastest-selling album in the UK and, incredibly, the fourth fastestselling album of all time. It topped the charts in seven other countries including – most momentously – the USA. A special edition of Spirit was later released that

included extra songs Forgive Me, Misses Glass and her smash hit cover of Snow Patrol’s Run. The result? You guessed it: it topped the UK charts. To date, Lewis’ debut LP has sold over 6.5 million copies. With a start like that, the future was never in doubt, and Lewis has continued to chart well with subsequent albums; she’s currently touring her fourth, Glass Heart. Between hit singles and world tours, she even found time to record the theme for James Cameron’s Avatar – the song was later nominated for a Golden Globe. In a very short space of time, Leona Lewis has experienced truly mind-boggling success, so I start by asking her what she learned from her X Factor experience. Her reply is surprisingly level-headed.

career and arguably has a stranglehold on the charts, but Leona has nothing but praise for her mentor. ‘Simon’s had a huge impact. He brought talent shows to the forefront and they’ve taken off globally.’ This leads to my next question: whether it is easier or harder for emerging artists to break through in the current climate of music industry uncertainty and wider economic downturn. ‘I feel like in a way it’s easier because of social media; artists have more control over their output because you don’t have to be on a record label.’ Still, the fact remains that Lewis is on a record label, and a supportive one at that - stateside, she reputedly earned a five-album deal worth $5 million. To what does she attribute her global success? ‘Knowing what I want and sticking to my vision,’ she says, without a moment’s hesitation. I decide to probe: anything else? ‘My music has mass appeal,’ she says ‘my audience spans all ages.’ For my part, I tell her I think it comes back to her singularly powerful voice and vocal range (she is often compared to singers of the stature of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston). Ever her humble self, she will only say that she has ‘amazing songwriters’, citing producer Ryan Tedder, who has worked on all her albums, as having helped her to find her voice. Another inspired move saw Lewis work with indie writers and material, including Craigie Dodds (Rizzle Kicks) and Matt Hales (Aqualung). Certainly, the Snow Patrol cover won her a legion of new fans. A child of the iPod generation, Lewis has managed to span genres and show that big songs – especially the ballads for which she is best known – can transcend cultural boundaries.

‘Simon’s had a huge impact. He brought talent shows to the forefront and they’ve taken off globally’ ‘I won in 2006 but in reality I’ve been in the industry much longer. I came out of the BRIT School, I had a production deal and had been in studios. I was always striving to get a big record deal so it came through doing the show. I’ve learnt so much from being a signed artist.’ In retrospect, this makes sense. Leona has been quietly carving out a reputation for herself as a ‘discreet’ superstar. I dig deeper, hoping to dish some dirt on Simon Cowell, asking what impact she thinks the media mogul has had on the industry. He’s clearly served up big pop acts during his prolific

27

Arts & Culture

Perhaps another key to Lewis’ success is that her voice speaks for itself: it’s big enough that she has no need for a big, public personality. That’s not to suggest that she’s boring: quite the opposite. In fact, it’s far more boring to watch successful female artists become stereotypical divas, monstrous corporate machines continually splashed across the papers and causing drama after drama (almost certainly believing their own hype). Leona Lewis is most likely to be found speaking about her charity work. An almost lifelong vegetarian, she’s a supporter of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Humane Society, and she’s also newly inaugurated as a brand ambassador for The Body Shop, her earnings from which will be donated to Hopefields Animal Sanctuary. I wonder at the reasons behind her altruistic sensibility, but it seems it just comes naturally. ‘I feel like I’m in a position to speak out against things I believe to be wrong,’ she

says. ‘I just can’t turn a blind eye to it. I get flack about not supporting human issues but there are so many things to support and I’ve chosen to speak out for animals. It doesn’t mean I don’t think there are many other issues to speak out about but one person can’t give voice to all of them.’ An insightful and touching comment and one that

‘I’ll keep things similar to the show I’m touring at the moment because people are responding really well to it... but I’ll throw in a few surprises too. I think the audience will love it. I’m so, so excited.’ She talks me through her pre-performance rituals, telling me that, ‘singing songs every night is very tiring, but my voice gets stronger and improves on the road; I love to run on the same day, to get my lungs going. I never used to, but now I’m conscientious not to oversing or talk too much. And I always drink manuka honey and lemon.’ Reassessing celebrities as ‘down to earth’ is more than a little cliché – and often altogether misleading. But there’s no doubt about it in this instance: Leona Lewis has her feet firmly on the ground. It seems that the girl with the sensational voice is loved and respected for all the right reasons – and that’s as real as it gets.

‘I’m in a position to speak out against things I believe to be wrong... I can’t turn a blind eye to it’ leads me to appreciate Leona as a star in her own right - not someone willing to simply do what’s expected of her. We finish up by talking about her upcoming headline show at the annual Kew the Music festival (alongside the legendary Blondie, no less) and she admits that she’s excited for the gig.

Leona Lewis is headlining Kew the Music on 13 July. For ticket info see kew.org

THE BIG HITTERS This Is My Moment Lewis’ 2006 debut single, A Moment Like This, was originally recorded by Kelly Clarkson. Lewis’s version broke the world record for download volume, being downloaded 50,000 times in under 30 minutes.

One Love Bleeding Love was the first single to be taken from Lewis’ second album, Spirit. It became the first single by a British female artist to top the US Billboard Top 100 in over twenty years.

Double Trouble Leona’s first two albums (released in 2007 and 2009) have collectively sold over 10 million copies worldwide and remained at the top of the charts in places as far removed as New Zealand and Austria for weeks on end.

Absolutely

PROMOTION

The one and only The Hogarth Group Wellness Manager, Terry Rodham, offers Absolutely a second helping of expert advice

D

ear readers, My goal is to provide Absolutely readers with some useful information to help you look and feel great, and for your Wellness to be optimised. Last month we looked at what Wellness is and summed up that ‘wellness is being able to do what you want to be able to do’. In this sense, wellness is very personal to each and every one of us. I want to develop this theme this month - especially in relation to exercise and physical activity - namely how we are all different and why what YOU want to achieve is personal. In short, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to wellness and being fit for life. Let’s take some examples. What motivates one person wont necessarily motivate another. How one person can eat what they like and another only has to look at something a little bit naughty and they put on a few kilos. What stresses one person positively relaxes another. One size doesn’t fit all This individuality has to be taken into account when we look at wellness planning (be that exercise, diet, state of mind). The biggest reason for not exercising or eating the wrong foods has to be lack of time, often involving work pressures, family commitments, so again we need to plan for this based on YOUR personal circumstances. On this basis, as a personal trainer, it’s extremely important to understand as much about you as possible. In the film Shrek yes I did just jump to a Dreamworks family movie - Shrek mentions to Donkey about understanding ogres and compares this to peeling the different layers of an onion until he gets down to the core. I know it’s a slightly crude analogy, but this really is what we do at Hogarth and The Park Club in our initial Wellness Consultation - we get to understand YOU. The skill to do this well involves the use of brief motivational interview techniques, combined with time and personal attention.

And the result of this investment for both parties is that a genuine personalised wellness plan can be created that’s enjoyable, relevant to YOUR goals as well as safe. Of course, precautions are made to make sure YOU are safe to exercise, change your diet or life habits. We look at your age, family history and any pre-existing conditions that may effect your ability to exercise. We measure resting and active blood pressure and offer to measure cholesterol too. These are all personal to you. You may have knee problems, back pain or something similar, so the plan will need to take account of these. Where more serious conditions apply, more specialist support should be sought and a good personal trainer will have a network of help on hand from osteopaths, chiropractors, acupuncturists, even stress managers etc. Once a safe plan has been created, it’s time to put the plan into action. It’s all about you! In our Clubs, we provide five one hour sessions (Wellness Consultations) as standard for a new member. Normally the first of these will cover as much about YOU as possible - with time to build the relationship further in the remaining appointments as well as inclusive monthly sessions with your personal trainer thereafter. The relationship (and understanding you) is developed informally outside of personal trainer sessions too. Basically, it’s all about YOU. So, in these remaining sessions we normally focus on making the most from the Club in relation to your goals. Group activity in the studio is especially motivating, habit forming and social. In the gym, the equipment we have is chosen to provide as much support, variety and motivation as possible. Our personal trainers help maximise this potential based on who you are and how you tick. Assistance is given in correct seat measurements, speed of movement.

We help set you up on chosen equipment, based on the agreed plan. Once comfortable, the opportunity to personalise the set up of equipment for entertainment, exercise tracking, even the ability to do work whilst exercising can be achieved. At The Hogarth (and soon at The Park Club), the new Technnogym cardiovascular equipment has ‘Unity consoles’. These are android based platforms that allow you to set up the console using a chosen device (key, phone, tablet - again YOUR choice) so that it automatically shows your favourites. This ground-breaking technology in the gym gives you extra motivation. Choose a virtual run along the Pacific Highway, choose radio, TV, Facebook, Twitter feeds. For those of you who don’t join a gym because work has a habit of consuming too many hours of your life to give you the time to look after yourself think again. With Unity you can even SKYPE whilst you are on the run! You can also track what you do outside the gym - at home, on work trips, on holiday - in-fact anywhere you want to using the Technogym Cloud - all supported by your own personal trainer if you want to. More on this next month. If all this technology reminds you of work or you just want to get on and go - then you don’t have to use any of the gizmos. It’s your choice. Above all, the real secret is knowing what you want and having the support when you need it or want it. At The Hogarth and the Park Club we believe we are best positioned to give you that support - whoever you are - so you can be able to do what you want to be able to do! COLOUR ME BOLD

Fancy a change for summer? Check out the talent at Turnham Green’s PR Hair, who recently secured positions in the regional finals of the Wella Trend Vision hairdressing competition in both the ‘Colour’ and ‘Young Talent’ categories. Talk about turning heads... 100 Turnham Green Terrace; prhairdressing.com

The Now Brow Eyebrow expert Shavata Singh gives her top tips on achieving model of the moment Cara Delevingne’s eyebrow-raising look “The current trend is to have thicker brows with flatter arches, also with the arch further out, which is a look best achieved if you already have a well-groomed and maintained thicker brow. I always advise that people see a professional for a brow style – if a celebrity’s brows suit you naturally, then it’s fi ne to be inspired by them, but don’t just assume they will suit you – brows need to be very delicately shaped to complement the contours of the face, which are different in us all. To achieve this fuller brows look you need to leave your brows to grow for as long as possible - the cycle of hair growth is around 8-13 weeks so it’s best to be patient and prepared to wait a while for them to grow back before visiting a professional. To give the illusion of a fuller brow I recommend a tint, as it can really help make the brows appear thicker and fuller, or if you’d rather, use a pencil like our Double Ended Pencil to fi ll in any gaps. Filling in brows will make them look fuller and defi nes your eye area. Each morning, apply a brow tamer to ‘set’ the shape of the brows for the day – this is even more important when you have a fuller look”. Fast-track your child’s healthcare When it comes to making children better, The Portland Hospital has the highest levels of paediatric expertise and the most advanced technology in the UK. Discover how your child can benefit from the country’s leading experts in children’s health today. Story by Stacey Jackson

C

ommon sense tells you that, if your child gets ill, the best person to treat them is a leading paediatric consultant experienced in their condition.

Our dedicated children’s unit is home to the largest group of private paediatricians in the UK, covering over 50 different clinical specialties. They are among the best in the world at diagnosing and treating both common and complex childhood conditions from birth to age 18. Using the very latest technologies, they treat over 40,000 children each year, ranging from routine check-ups to extremely rare and complex cases. Many of our consultants hold senior posts at leading NHS trust hospitals such as Great Ormond Street and St Mary’s Hospital. They’re supported by a team of experienced children’s health professionals, including specialist children’s nurses and play specialists.

We don’t treat any adult patients in our children’s unit, so your child’s hospital experience will be completely tailored to their needs. We find that this can relieve your child’s anxiety about visiting hospital and help them to make a speedy recovery.

Rapid appointments Don’t wait. For same day and next day appointments, including evenings and Saturdays, call 020 7390 8203.

When you’re thinking about private healthcare for your child, safety will of course be an important consideration. Do bear in mind that some private hospitals don’t offer any on-site critical care facilities. Our children’s unit is fully equipped with the latest medical technology and facilities. Should the need arise, we have a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Baby Unit staffed by a dedicated team of critical care experts. You’ll be pleased to know that you won’t need to join a queue for this exceptional service. Our convenient and rapid appointments give your child the care they need at a time that suits your family and your lifestyle, including during the summer holidays so none of the new school term will be missed.

Making the cut

TONI&GUY Chiswick is delighted with their double success! TONI&GUY Chiswick are proud to announce not one, but two momentous achievements this week as they have not only re-launched their beautiful new look salon, but have also won over a panel of esteemed judges at the L’Oreal Colour Trophy Grand Final. On Monday, June 3rd, Iwona Szeruta, stylist at TONI&GUY Chiswick, became the latest Mizani Afro Catwalk Look Award 2013 winner at the prestigious award show held at Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane. Over 455 salons nationwide gained a place in the live competition yet only 42 made it to the Grand Final. Each of the salon teams were requested to create an overall model look that flawlessly merged a well-executed haircut, inspirational hair colour alongside editorially inspired clothes styling that reflected awareness of key trends from the Autumn/Winter runway collections. ’It is such a fantastic achievement to win at the Grand Final – especially because I was up against so many top hairdressers,’ said Iwona Szeruta. ‘It has taken a lot of hard work but I am so lucky to have received such great support from the salon team and clients alike.’ To celebrate the launch of TONI&GUY Chiswick,

the salon opened its doors and welcomed guests in to experience the new salon design concept. They were accompanied by the Founder of TONI&GUY, Toni Mascolo OBE, who joined in with the festivities on Thursday 30th May. As well as music, canapés and cocktails, the fantastic salon team gave complimentary cut and colour consultations, fantastic introductory offers and demonstrations of the latest Spring/Summer ‘13 hair trends. TONI&GUY Chiswick was first opened 15 years ago and the team bring with them a wealth of talent and experience. From exceptional Stylists through to Colour Specialists, the salon offers an extensive range of services. ‘I can hardly believe that it is fifty years since I opened the first TONI&GUY salon, in South London,’ says Toni Mascolo OBE. ‘I still find visiting the salons so exciting and the new salon looks amazing, it makes me feel very proud of the Chiswick team and the hard work that they put in.’ To book an appointment at TONI&GUY Chiswick or to take advantage of their free style advisory service, call 020 8995 4556 or visit www.toniandguy.com

Spa Review Gemma Billington gets body beautiful with The K Cleanse Well this is a nice surprise. Slip away from Shepherd’s Bush station, down Richmond Way and you won’t miss the K West Hotel & Spa – a strikingly modern building, which underwent a £2million refurbishment in 2010. Take the lift down two floors et voila – you’re instantly met with that aromatic, calming spa smell and the sight of people milling about in waffle bathrobes and flip-flops. The K West Spa is home to the UK’s only Snow Paradise room, where temperatures dip below -15° C, but I’ve decided to go for something slightly less hardcore. The K Cleanse is a combination of allover body massage and exfoliation, apparently using extracts from precious stones and minerals, and followed by a cupping system which stimulates blood flow and relaxes the muscles. It’s quite a bizarre sensation at first (I imagine it feels exactly like dragging the nozzle of a Henry Hoover across your body), but you quickly get used to it and relax into the massage. After showering, my skin feels incredible; plump, fresh and silky smooth. It even appears to be glowing and I’m convinced that the cellulite which graces my love handles has faded. It’s a shame to cover up upon leaving the spa, but, luckily Westfield is just a stone’s throw away; enticing you to splash out on a new bikini to show it all off. From £110, k-west.co.uk

T

he site for disPLAY architecture’s recently completed 5-bedroom home is situated in the Chiswick House Conservation Area. The bungalow that used to occupy the site needed to be demolished and the clients, the Hearne family – though extremely fond of their abode – accepted that it was in need of some serious updating. ‘The surrounding area has become an amalgamation of varying architectural vernaculars.’ Adam Tarr, founder and Director of disPLAY architecture begins; ‘the original chalet bungalow was at complete odds with the street scene – I think that’s a polite way of saying it was an ugly house!’ After three previous architects’ attempts at obtaining planning permission from the Council were unsuccessful, Adam stepped in to create a home that didn’t look out of place in the street but, more importantly, fulfilled the client’s wishes. Adam has an infectious enthusiasm for what he does and has created a string of contemporary houses across west London since founding disPLAY in 2004. For the Chiswick project, he explains that all parties agreed to allow the design to be driven ‘organically’, meaning that there was no fixed or preconceived notion of what the final design would look like. Hailing from Manchester School of Architecture, Adam mixes a heavy dose of engineering into his design schemes and uses a variety of scientific studies to really understand the constraints and opportunities of the plot. ‘An example of one of the desk studies we carried out on the project was Annual Shadow Analysis’, he explains, ‘which was digitally created and took into account shadows cast onto the site by surrounding buildings and trees. Equipped with all of this analysis we were able to match the environmental requirements for each of the requested rooms to what was available on the site. Matching up the study with the light and things like that. From there, it began to narrate form and appearance.’ 53

As this has been called an environmentally conscious build, I ask what kind of technology was used to make the house an eco friendly one. ‘There is a whole raft of environmentally friendly technologies which reduce the reliance on utility companies for the clients.’ Adam replies. Around 50% of the house is clad in sustainably sourced western red cedar wood, and there are some rather modern additions such as heat recovery units in the basement and thermally efficient glass. The property actually produces 25% of its own energy on site. Also included in the scheme are the use of 90 ft deep geothermal boreholes, which are drilled under the driveway to store energy from the ground to heat water. The subject of solar panels is touched upon, but Adam explains that; ‘solar panels wouldn’t have been as productive and wouldn’t have saved the client as much money as the boreholes.’ One of the most interesting things about disPLAY is the way they combine ideas from totally different schools of thought, such as Game Theory, which is the study of strategic decision making and is mostly used by scientists when studying wildlife, but which can also be applied when trying to influence the behaviour of people. Adam explains: ‘we use Game Theory in our projects, for example, in one of our buildings in Cobham, we have a waterfall in the main foyer that changes colour depending on how much energy is used. People will actually go round turning off lights to change the colour of the waterfall from red to green.’ The idea of an ‘organic process’ is an interesting one, but in practice puts a lot of trust in the person implementing it. ‘We are fundamentally focused on process,’ Adam says, when I ask about his architectural ethos, ‘I am always less focused on how it (the project) actually looks at the end.’ For someone outside of the industry, this seems like quite an extraordinary way of working but, judging by the stunning results, it’s clearly one that is successful. displayarchitecture.com; Photography by Charles Gervais, bothhemispheres.com 54

They will also benefit from a liquid feed such as MiracleGro or Maxicrop which will promote strong growth and more blooms. kategouldgardens.com

Say cheese Gemma Billington gets stuck in behind the scenes at Teddington Cheese Photography by Rebecca Noonan

W

e Brits are a nation of cheese lovers and, even at a time when the majority of us are feeling the pinch, we still love to splash out on our favourite fromage. One man who knows this better than most is Teddington Cheese owner Tony Chuck, who has a keen nose for business as well as for food, having previously worked as a dairy buyer for Sainsbury’s. When we meet at the Hill Rise site, I feel like the proverbial kid in a candy shop at the neatly displayed range of goodies. ‘We’re a cheese shop and we’re not a deli’ Tony states and, though there are a few hamper favourites and accessories for sale – plus

a small range of wine – it’s cheese that fills the shelves and fridges. The original Teddington Cheese branch opened over 15 years ago and, though it’s always been popular, it’s Tony’s astute business sense that has seen Teddington Cheese prosper since he took it over in 2005. The company has embraced changes in technology (Tony estimates that 40% of trade is made online) yet the shop retains the charm of a local independent and is clearly a strong part of the community.

A new string to the Teddington Cheese bow is the recent addition of evening Cheese Masterclasses, held directly on the shop floor. ‘We started them on a few trials last year, around October

time.’ Tony says. ‘We take small groups through certain facets of cheese... We also ask them beforehand if there’s anything specific they want to learn about.’ So far the classes have been a huge success and numbers have been rising. This ties in nicely with the interactive quality of the shop and, upon visiting, it’s clear that Tony is more than generous with samples and clearly knows his stuff. There’s over 140 different cheeses in stock – including a strong variety of British brands – and though changes are made throughout the year, it’s good to know that the best-sellers rarely change. But what is the nation’s – or at least southwest London’s favourite cheese? ‘It’s still cheddar,’ he replies without skipping a beat, ‘we do a really special one called Vintage Lincolnshire Poacher that’s 30 years old.’ And with that, we get stuck in. Well, there are certain perks to the job. teddingtoncheese.co.uk

Wedding (Baby)belles

The wedding industry will always be subject to various fads and fazes, but this is one that will no doubt stick around for some time. Wedding cheese cakes are ostensibly similar to the traditional tiered wedding cake, but are made up of wheels of cheese instead of sponge. Tony estimates that their popularity has trebled in the past two years and the various designs can be decorated with flowers and traditional embellishment. Because cheese proprietors eschew the normal inflated prices of the wedding industry, they’re also surprisingly affordable as well as being quirky and, most importantly, delicious. 65

Glazing a Ham

As a large amount of salt is needed to cure a ham, a little bit of sweetness added to the finished item is highly complementary. You can achieve this by serving the ham with something sweet yet acidic, such as Cumberland or cranberry sauce, or by baking the cooked ham with a glaze. Often the former makes a good base for the latter, and it wouldn’t be considered wrong to do both. MUSTARD AND BROWN SUGAR GLAZE 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp grain mustard 3 tbsp soft brown sugar

BLACK TREACLE AND SPICE GLAZE 2 tbsp black treacle 1 tbsp golden syrup 3 tbsp stout ½ tsp ground coriander ½ tsp ground cinnamon Apricot and ginger glaze 3 tbsp good-quality apricot jam 1 piece of stem ginger, finely chopped

To glaze a ham

Peel off the skin (not the fat) while the ham is still hot; this is very tricky to do neatly once it cools, so wear a pair of rubber gloves to guard against the heat. If you’re a stickler for presentation, score a neat, criss-cross pattern into the fat, though a few slashes will suffice if you’re less particular. Prepare your glaze and rub it into the fat. The suggested glazes above are easy to make and are really delicious, but for a very simple alternative, brush a tangy, thick-cut marmalade or redcurrant jelly over the ham. Stud the surface with cloves, if you wish, then bake the ham in a hot-ish oven (200°C/400°F/gas mark 6) for 20–30 minutes, until the fat is wonderfully caramelised. Slice and serve hot, or allow to cool if you prefer it cold.

wrap the loaf tin with baking parchment and foil. Place the container in a roasting tin and pour enough hot water around it to reach halfway up the sides. Cook in the oven for 1–1½ hours, until a metal skewer inserted in the middle comes out piping hot. 5. When ready, if you’ve used a loaf tin, place a weight on top of the foil to compress the pâté, then set aside to cool. Once cold, place in the fridge overnight. 6. Serve in slices with a small leaf salad and some cornichons. The first slice is always the most difficult to remove and then it is far easier to ease out. hen thinking about going out to an Indian restaurant, it’s hard not to immediately picture the usual fare. The same dishes in every menu, bad decor and the use of so many chillies you feel like you might combust. Fortunately for those who appreciate the cuisine of the subcontinent, Potli, located on King Street, falls foul of none of these usual clichés. Potli styles itself as an Indian market kitchen, drawing inspiration from food markets and street vendors hailing from various locations in India, including Chandni Chowk in Delhi and the famous Chowpatty beach of Mumbai. Potli brings these authentic and exciting dishes to the

Jeremy Horne finds world-class curry at Hammersmith’s Potli restaurant fore with great aplomb in a diverse menu brimming with unusual delicacies. It was also recently included in Tatler’s 2013 restaurant guide. Quite an accolade. Having immersed ourselves in the menu and learnt a little about the provenance of that which was on offer, my friend and I decided to dive in without hesitation. We ordered a tandoori sharing platter containing chicken, lamb, seekh kebab and tawa macchi (fish curry) to begin our evening, accompanied by a ‘Berry Crush’ cocktail (essentially a red berry mojito). The platter was excellent, the meat was beautifully marinated so as to retain its own flavour and the refreshing cocktail complimented it perfectly. As we moved on to the main course, I thought it might be worthwhile to try

something you don’t normally see at a traditional curry house and I opted for a prawn Narkel Diye which was comprised of king prawns cooked in coconut milk and flavoured with mustard and coriander. It was exceptional and remarkably light, with the mustard and coriander taking away the usual sugary flavour of the coconut. My friend went for a twist on a classic with a lamb shank Rogan Josh which, as you would expect, was rich and satisfying without being cloying. Proceedings were then rounded off with a mango crème brûlée and coffee as we enjoyed Potli’s subdued decor and convivial atmosphere. With exceptional, authentic dishes and surroundings, Potli brings the culinary heart of India to west London in a unique and stylish way. 71

SHA

Life

Katie Jones seeks relaxation and a sugar-free recharge in southern Spain’s luxurious SHA Wellness Clinic

E

very day, without fail, I find myself in need of a sugary, three o’clock pick-me-up. It doesn’t matter whether it’s biscuits, chocolate, or a saccharine drink, these little daily indulgences are my weapons of choice in the battle against the dreaded afternoon slump. I know, of course, that it’s not the healthiest of choices, but my sugar cravings are too strong to be ignored. I needed a solution, and when I finally found one, it just so happened to be in the ambient micro-climate of southern Spain. Lucky me. Nestled on a hillside in the Sierra Helada Natural Park is the SHA Wellness Clinic, a sprawling expanse of whitewashed buildings boasting stunning views. Providing an oasis for those seeking a detox or relief from more serious health conditions, the foundations of SHA are rooted firmly in the science of

macrobiotics; the term derives from the Greek macro, meaning long or great, and biosis, meaning life. Leading the quest for this ‘long-life’ is SHA founder Alfredo Bataller Parietti, who I meet upon arrival. I have to admit that I was nervous about the imposed diet; I am not good at being told what to eat. My day could include three balanced meals, but on the other hand, it might just be dinner and snacks – it’s anything but balanced. I voiced these concerns to Alfredo, yet he assured me that the diet would be ideal for a vegetarian like myself. The plan regulates energy levels by balancing the nutrients that the body receives, rather than feeding it what it craves. Guests at SHA are introduced to the menu of medical, aesthetic and therapeutic treatments with a series of meetings at the beginning of their stay. There is a food consultation in which the myths of this vegetable and whole

grain-friendly diet are broken down, aesthetic consultations in which you can discuss conditions or imperfections, and a full medical check-up. During my food consultation with Dr. Kenneth Prange, I realised that this diet is not as restrictive as I had previously thought. It is true that animal products, such as meat and dairy, do not feature regularly on your dinner plate, but naturally sweetened desserts and a whole host of other inventive and exciting ingredients get a chance to tickle your taste buds. What impressed me most at this wellness haven was the level to which you could tailor your experience to match your particular dietary, medical and aesthetic needs. I was assigned to the ‘Biolight’ diet during my stay, a healthy, middle-road menu for those who want a detox, but who aren’t necessarily looking to shift pounds. There is also the Kushi diet, a stripped-back, extra-light menu

of salads and soups, and the gastronomic SHA diet – many an evening was spent eyeing-up the pungent steam-filled cloches as they passed our table in the Shamadi dining room, on their way to SHA menu devotees. Lunch was the first meal that I tucked into at the clinic. I had a cucumber, dill and yoghurt cream soup, which was perfectly fresh and zingy. This was followed by a modest portion of spelt tagliatelle in a creamy pesto sauce, garnished with crispy basil chips and toasted pine nuts. Happily for me, meal times on the Biolight and SHA menus are always split into a starter, main and a dessert, tricking my stomach into believing it was consuming more food. This fact – coupled with the macrobiotic teaching that digestion starts in the mouth so food must be chewed properly – meant that mealtimes were generally a pleasurable affair and I felt satisfied for longer. The food at SHA was a welcome surprise – head chef Pablo Montoro served inventive and delicious alternatives to desserts, sweetened with barley malt or rice syrup. I even had a spelt bread pizza one joyous evening and the most mouth-wateringly succulent grilled scorpion fish with beetroot foam, grated tonka beans and black fennel tempura.

Once you are alive and kicking, the fun really starts. SHA offers macrobiotic cookery classes, healthy eating seminars and a wide variety of fitness classes, both inside the state-of-the-art gym and outside on the sun-drenched terrace. I chose to spend much of my time in the spa, where the gentle sound of trickling water follows you everywhere as you float about in a fluff y white robe. The lymphatic drainage massage is highly recommended to aid the detox, coaxing any lingering toxins from your body. The spa has one of the most impressive menus I’ve ever seen, and guests can enjoy all manner of traditional treatments as well as some of the most technologically advanced aesthetic procedures in the world. Book

a Thermage Comfort Pulse Technology consultation – the before and after results images are seriously impressive. After days spent swimming, exercising, and spa-ing, I collapsed onto my humongous bed to watch the twinkling lights of houses down on the hillside as my fi nal day drew to a close. I defi nitely left SHA Wellness Clinic feeling happier and healthier, with the cravings that had been troubling me completely eradicated. I’m happy to report that I’ve stuck to my diet since arriving home, encouraged by the threat of relapsing back to sluggish energy levels. If this is how I feel after a three-day stint, I can only imagine how guests enjoying a two-week programme must feel. Sublime, I would imagine. Essential Escapes offers a 7-night Detox Holiday at SHA Wellness Clinic from £2,989 per person based on two sharing including transfers, accommodation in a Deluxe Suite, full board, a general medical check up, plus detox treatments and massages (essentialescapes.com) For more information on SHA Wellness Clinic please visit shawellnessclinic.com 73

itting high above the shores of Lake Geneva in the French spa town of Evian, the serene Hotel Ermitage seems to float upon a cloud of well-being and tranquillity. From the moment I stepped into my room and opened the French doors to the clear lake air, I understood why the resort has been a Mecca for rest and recuperation for over 100 years. Taking the lift from my floor directly down to the hotel’s Spa Quatre Terres, I was transported to Bali via India and China through the dark wood decor and the healing hands of expert therapists. There’s a holistic focus – my massage therapist incorporated the use of healing crystals while giving me one of the best deep-tissue massages of my life. After recuperating on a soft bed with a glass of Evian – naturellement – I then spent the afternoon lazing in the spa’s Jacuzzi and steam room. The next morning the hotel’s dashing chauffeur took me down the hill to the lake and into the heart of the resort. I came, as others have been for centuries, to Les Thermes D’Evian to ‘take the waters’. This involved being pummelled by hydro jets (seriously enlivening) and being ‘rained on’ by heated Evian water while a therapist gave me an all-over body massage. Evian cannot be rivalled for its blend of tranquillity, excellent food and winning service. Next time I’ll be returning with my family in tow to take advantage of the superlative Kids’ Resort with its own pool, tennis lessons, cooking workshops and more.... t’s only been open a year but the Corinthia Hotel, situated in a grand Victorian building just inches from the River Thames, is by far the most sumptuous hotel London. The Spa certainly helps. ESPA may well be the world’s leading spa company, with several awards to its names and outposts all over the world, but the concept spa at the Corinthia, ESPA Life is the first of its kind. It’s tailored to give you the ultimate in luxury spa experiences: there are lifestyle programmes to follow for anything from insomnia to pregnancy, intricate beauty treatments and a vast nail studio and gym. Even the most basic of massages and facials last an hour, for the highly elaborate run-through that beauticians afford every client is never rushed and comfortably performed in the ultraprivate spaceship-like treatment pods. The relaxation area greets you with heated marble chaise-longues, roaring fires and bathtubs, while there’s also an ethereal sleep pod, where a hanging fireplace warms a pitch-black room with cut-off sections replete with black and ruby cushions and dramatic velvet drapes. Afterwards, drag yourself up to The Lobby Lounge and indulge in the afternoon tea. If you’re dairy, gluten or nut intolerant, it’s not a problem for the Corinthia team. Expect an endless flow of cakes, tea and plates of triangle sandwiches so elegant, you won’t want to actually eat them. Doubles from £450 per night. 10 Whitehall Place, SW1A; corinthia.com

Ti Sana

Detox Retreat & Spa, Lombardy By Gabriel O’Rorke

A

typical day at Ti Sana starts with power walking at 8.30am along the Adda River, juice for breakfast – think courgette, apple, carrot and ginger – and an hour-long fitness session. Lunch is served at the ‘Food Lab’ from 12.30 and consists of a large bowl of salad and dehydrated flax seed crackers, followed by (yes, thanks be to the detox gods, there’s a second course) a faux carb dish like courgette ‘spaghetti’ in a cashew nut sauce (no added spaghetti, of course, just cleverly cut vegetables). Five meals a day doesn’t sound too bad – breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner – but when three of these ‘meals’ are juices, and one day a week is liquid only, things become a little more Spartan. Minimal food and gentle exercise are combined with a medical assessment, blood tests, a doctor’s appointment and a colonic – this is the only spa in Italy with the ‘Angel of Water’ machine which you operate yourself, keeping your dignity intact. The spa is well equipped, stocked with organic products

(like the Anika range) and kitted out with an infrared sauna, normal sauna, steam room and several jets and rain showers. Spa treatments, however, are limited to one or two per visit depending on your regime – Raw Food, Juicing or Energising. The focus is very much on what you are (or are not) eating, and the aim is to regulate cortisol levels by exercising in the morning, eating in the middle of the day and practicing Chinese Qi Gong meditation in the evening. This takes place in a large, light studio in one of the restored 18th century terracottaroofed buildings – the hotel is made up of a cluster of these stone houses and the 22 bedrooms are scattered between buildings. You’ll leave enlightened –the emphasis at Ti Sana is on educating guests, with daily lectures on well-being. Ti Sana has three Active Life Programmes: Juicing Detox fasting; Fresh Lifestyle raw food and Energy Lifestyle with raw and healthy cooked foods. Prices start from 170 euros per person per day. For reservations see: 1711.it

et amidst the vineyards of the Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte estate in Bordeaux, Les Sources de Caudalie is a rural retreat with a twist. Inspired by the concept of the ‘French Paradox’, whereby the diet and lifestyle of Southwest France is seen as conducive to good health, the hotel has taken the concept to heart, playing host to the original and now world-famous Vinothérapie spa. Here, treatments are wine-centric, incorporating the benefits of the grapes from the Graves Grand Cru Classé vines which the spa overlooks. The spa’s interiors are as organic as the treatments, using wood, stone and recycled materials from the local area. This theme continues in the hotel, which has the feel of a French country house, filled with paintings and antiques, traditional materials and local fabrics. However, for those who aren’t keen on the rustic look, the ‘L’Ile aux Oiseaux’ summer house is perfect. Designed by French fashion prodigy Maxime Simoëns, the design is modern and striking. However, Les Sources de Caudalie is not for dieters – the food is too good. Choose from Michelin-starred fi ne dining at La Grand’Vigne, Chef Nicolas Masse’s restaurant overlooking the lake or bistro-style food in La Table du Lavoir, in a 19th century wash house formerly used by winegrower’s wives. Before you leave, don’t forget to invest in Caudalie’s own range of beauty products – a great way to harness the powers of the grape and continue the spa rituals at home. The 3 day Grape Cure costs €525. Stays at Les Sources de Caudalie, Bordeaux, from €250 per room per night; sources-caudalie.com

You may know us from walking your dog in the park, local charity events or simply recognise a familiar face; we walk the same streets and eat in the same restaurants you do. Of course, it’s also quite possible that you – or someone you know – has let or rented a property through us. We’ve been around for years and our success is built on the fact that people who use us once, tend to use us again. And tell their friends. Because most of our agents live in the areas in which they work, they really understand what matters to landlords and tenants there. Many agents will claim to know more about where you live than anyone else. But we understand it’s because people know us, that time and again we let and sell properties more quickly and more profitably than anyone else.

Brianna Joss Not just Brook Green’s most dominant letting agent – Brianna is immersed in the community: as a committee member of local charity ‘West London Action for Children’, or helping to organise a tennis tournament or quiz night. All done with an enthusiasm born out of a passion for the area and the people who live here.

IN THEIR

OWN WORDS

PHILIP WOOLLER, DIRECTOR OF PHILIP WOOLLER

avigating through the first year in the life of my new business surely ranks as my toughest challenge to date. In context, moving house, getting married, having kids and finding schools were just stress practice! Setting up Philip Wooller, that’s me, is my first foray into the up and down world of entrepreneurship. What is now so satisfying is to see the result of that leap of faith and watch things grow into something positive and rewarding. We are not yet through our first year but we have great momentum. From the many words of advice I have gratefully received, it is “Don’t forget to enjoy it” that sticks in my mind and now seems relevant at last, as I fully appreciate the sentiment behind them. After all, is this not the best advice for life? The liberating benefits of being a small business; being able to make my own decisions and essentially being true to myself have given me a huge advantage. I feel it is this instant influence that has played a large part in putting us firmly on the Askew Road property map in such a short space of time. I know that our clients are also directly benefitting from this and that is as

it should be. For years Askew Road wasn’t generating a cohesive village feel – a no.1 selling point for all estate agents in their metaphorical London villages. But now it is surely the place of the moment, and not in small part, it is down to likeminded independent businesses really engaging with their community. By providing what people want locally we are receiving great support and loyalty for attempting to do it. These are exciting times, the area is radically changing for the better and it is hard to keep track of the new openings and re launches. It is my belief that this momentum is now unstoppable. We know that every house becomes a home, that every home belongs to a street, and that every street makes a community. We’re here to make this happen. I’m very proud to say that we are now officially part of this process and I can’t thank people enough for their overwhelming support. Jen, Robyn and I live locally and we listen to what our clients want and intend to keep listening but most of all, we enjoy it!

PROPERTY NEWS  HOUSE HUNTING The property I’d most like on my books and why...I love properties steeped in history. They continue to grab the attention of our buyers. Whether it was a famous scientist, artist or author that had lived at the property. These stories add value and emotional attachment. The best place to invest... The property market in Brook Green has remained consistently strong, benefitting from a steady increase in property value. With the neighbouring areas of Holland Park and Kensington perceived as less value for money, Brook Green is reaping the benefits as investors move west for a better yield on their purchases. The most interesting property I have been involved in is... The Oyster Pier development [image above] offers 10 bespoke luxury barges in Battersea. This is a new concept in riverside living. Each barge offers a unique 60 year mooring lease and over 2,300 square feet of interior living space and 730 square feet of exterior usable space. oysterpier.com The toughest sale and why... We had a particular property on Hammersmith Grove proved rather tiricky. The buyer’s local search suggested that the property was built on

contaminated land since a factory had previously occupied it. Despite many successful sales in the same area, this became a real sticking point. Our clients were completely bemused having lived there for nearly 25 years. After several weeks of negotiations, the freeholder released the land free of charge. Finest property showcase... Agate Road, W6 This particular property is a beautifully presented mid-Victorian end of terrace family home. Located on this quiet tree lined residential street, it boasts an extremely bright reception room, high ceilings and original plaster mouldings. £2,700,000 Tanya McFeely, Sales Negotiator, Bective Leslie Marsh, Brook Green 020 7603 5181; bectivelesliemarsh.co.uk

ARLA ANOUNCE A NEW PRESIDENT

One of the most influential letting agents in central, west and south-west London, Susan Fitz-Gibbon Director of local specialist Fitz-Gibbon this month takes over as President of the UK lettings industry’s professional and regulatory body ARLA(Association of Residential Lettings Agents). “With the need for greater transparency within our industry, there is much to do to drive professional standards forward” says Susan, “unregulated agents adopting sharp practice cause grief amongst reputable agents that adhere to strict codes of practice. The lettings industry enjoys a high profile and more than ever, landlord and tenant protection must be of the highest priority”. Susan`s aim is to increase public awareness of ARLA and use it`s influence as the authoritative voice of the lettings industry. HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL’S PRIME PROPERTY SHOWCASE IN HONG KONG AND DUBAI SETS NEW RECORDS Last month Hamptons International hosted a successful property showcase exhibition in both Hong Kong and Dubai capitalising on strong demand for UK residential property. Showcasing their superior London, Country and new build homes at the prestigious British Consulate General in Hong Kong and The Address Hotel, Downtown Dubai, The Collection was a high profile event which attracted a record number of over 200 investors from both Asia and the Middle East. Andrew Phillips, Head

of Central London Sales at Hamptons International says: “The Collection event was a huge success, we welcomed both serious investors and a member of the Qatar Royal Family in Dubai. This year, we were also thrilled to work with the high profile developers A2 Dominion and Octagon to generate a record number of leads and sales overall. Of those attendees who disclosed their budgets, 50 per cent had budgets over £1 million. The weakening of the British Pound has meant that now more than ever, international investors are looking to purchase British homes specifically in

Prime London and commuter belt areas. West London, was front of mind for attendees at The Collection, due to strong capital growth and high rental yields. With appearances on both TV, Radio and in top tier media targets across both markets, we were able add significant interest for the event and we are already looking forward to next year.” For further information about how to submit your property to next event run by Hamptons International, please visit hamptons.co.uk or contact your local Hamptons International branch 127

NORTHFIELDS AGAIN NAMED BEST LONDON LETTINGS AGENCY AT THE SUNDAY TIMES LETTINGS AGENCY OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2013 Northfields has for the third year running won the prestigious Gold Award as the Best London Lettings Agency in our size category at The Times/Sunday Times Lettings Agency of the Year Awards 2013 sponsored by Zoopla. The award was presented by Karren Brady, (Lord Sugar’s right-hand woman on the hit BBC show ‘The Apprentice’) at a dazzling ceremony held at the Lancaster London Hotel on Friday 24th May 2013. Northfield’s standard of excellence was recognised by a panel of independent industry judges who ranked Northfields as the Best Small London Lettings Agency out of a pool of top London Agencies. This latest award is added to Northfields’ already impressive trophy cabinet, which is likely to take centre stage at the new sales branch due to open

As the recipient of 25 national industry awards, Northfields remains the only London agent to win the UK Lettings Agency of the Year coveted trophy in 2010. KFH’S URBAN ORCHARD

On Saturday the 18th May, Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward’s Chiswick branch participated in the Edible Herbal High Road launch event, which runs until the 9th June. The event saw Chiswick High Road, Devonshire Road and Turnham Green Terrace transformed into ‘Urban Orchards’, transforming the area with fragrant herbs and edible climbing plants. The day involved all sorts of fun activities and KFH participated to provide fun face painting for children, balloons and cupcakes. In addition, the branch also sponsored the event by planting a herbal box full of edible herbs like lavender, rosemary, Borlotti beans and Nasturtium to name a few. All in all the day was a great success for all involved and everyone is already looking forward to next year’s event. 020 3280 3513; kfh.co.uk

NOTHING’S BETTER THAN THE INSIDE SCOOP. LOCAL AGENTS GIVE THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS... INTERIOR INSPIRATION

Joseph Murphy, Sales Director of Orchards, 020 8995 9797. Interiors of Chiswick would be an absolute first on my list. You can loose yourself in their showroom and inspiration just comes naturally when you are surrounded with well designed items. I would recomend anyone looking for a bespoke but affordable interior design solutions to visit their show room on the high road.

Susan Fitz-Gibbon, Director of Fitz-Gibbon, 020 8892 8921. Church Road in Twickenham offers a special charm of its own, you walk down this historic street and can go back in time if you let your imagination take you there. As you wander down the lane with the river gently passing by on the parallel street you can imagine what it would have been like in times passed.

Philip Wooller, Director of Philip Wooller, 020 8811 2929. The Albertine has something of a student union vibe about it, with closely packed, battered wooden furniture and a blackboard for wine and food specials. It’s a great place to enjoy a bottle of red with friends before or after the cinema or a show at the Bush Theatre.

Matt Thompson, Associate Director of Featherstone Leigh, 020 8994 6567. Chiswick has played a key role in the military history of this country since its defining moment in the Civil War, when the royalists attempts to capture London were halted at Turnham Green. We have also seen off the V2s and produced gunboats from our part of the River Thames.

Gary Sinton, Director of Sinton Andrews, 020 8566 1990. Some people get addicted to the gym, I thankfully don’t, however I do understand the need to keep my creaking body in shape. So twice weekly visits to Bodyline Studio’s in Ealing Broadway keeps me going. Roy Summers and his team of personal trainers offer a varies service to all levels.

Jason Godfray, Branch Manager of Barnard Marcus, 020 8995 2345. Chiswick House has a magnificent neo-Palladian villa set in beautiful historic gardens which hosts many events including; opera, open air theatre, history talks, nature walks, film festivals, dog shows and special children’s activities. A treat for all the family whatever their age.
