f could have my way, I'd live in a country that is hot all year around. Why not emigrate? I hear you ask. Well, the problem is, in my field of work you either need to be fluent in another language (which I'm not) or you need to move to an English speaking country like America or Australia. Personally I'm not sold on America - they still have the death penalty in 31 states for god sake! and Australia is just too far away. I like having my family and friends nearby, just in case, you know? Plus, spiders. But I would really like more sun and that's something Britain can't guarantee, even in July. That said, despite the unreliability of our climate, we're hedging our bets and have found you the best floaty floral dresses and summer must-haves, flick to page 22. hen Roehamptonborn Hollywood actress Emily Blunt married her husband, American actor John Kraskinki – aka Jim Halpert from NBC’s The Office Ω four years ago, the ceremony was held at good friend George Clooney’s secluded villa on Lake Como. Something only a bonafide Hollywood A-Lister, like Blunt, can claim to have done. While Blunt’s life is undoubtedly all red carpets and celebrity friends, this multiple BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning actress is about as humble as they come. Blunt, unlike many of her contemporaries, found a career in acting quite by fluke. Other than sporadic brushes with the arts at school, Blunt had been determined to pursue academia and head to university. It wasn’t until Ω during a school play at Hurtwood House college Ω she was scouted by a leading agent, Kenneth Mcreddie, that Blunt even considered acting as a serious career option.
Because of the stutter I USED TO DO IMPRESSIONS all the time. I WOULD MIMIC FAMILY MEMBERS or teachers. Blunt claims that her interest in the performing arts developed because of a stammer she suffered from until the age of 14. “Because of the stutter I used to do impressions all the time,” she laughs, “I would mimic family members or teachers. I found that whenever I did a silly voice, I could speak more fluently. I had a teacher who saw that and encouraged me to take acting lessons, which helped even more. There was something quite liberating about being able to throw yourself into another character, not having to worry about whatever was going to come out of your mouth next.”
17 CHIS_July15_Emily Blunt.indd 17
Mcreddie had high hopes for Blunt, securing her roles both on stage and on TV, in programmes such as Foyle’s War in 2002, just one year before she starred opposite imitable actress Dame Judi Dench in Sir Peter Hall’s production of The Royal Family. But her big break came in 2004, when she starred as Tamsin, an educated 16year old cynic, in the critically acclaimed film My Summer of Love, for which she shared Ω with her co-star Natalie Press Ω an Evening Standard British Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer. With a plethora of impressive roles under her belt, the one she is best known for is ruthless fashion assistant Emily Charlton in the 2006 box office smash, The Devil Wears Prada. Starring alongside veteran actress Meryl Streep and fellow newcomer Anne Hathaway, the film propelled Blunt into the spotlight. Since then, she has tended to play strong, fiery women, appearing in hit films such as The Young Victoria in 2009; The Adjustment Bureau in 2011; Looper in 2012; Edge of Tomorrow in 2014; while her forthcoming film Sicario (Mexican

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW slang for ‘hitman’) is due for release this September. In Sicario Ω directed by Denis Villeneuve Ω Blunt plays hard-nosed FBI agent Kate Macer, who has been transferred from the hostage rescue division to the covert CIA para-military unit, which is waging war against the Mexican drug cartels. Josh Brolin co-stars as Matt Graver, her FBI boss determined to unleash hell on the Juarez cartel leaders, while Benicio Del Toro plays a ruthless agent-cum-torturer-cumassassin. In the face of such roles, Blunt remains determined not to define her characters as one-dimensional beings: “I don’t really see them as tough,” she explains. “Someone tells me the character is tough and I think, what because I have a gun? Instead I found my character quite damaged and vulnerable: she is struggling with being a female cop in what is essentially a man’s world. There are morally questionable things that she is experiencing with these men. It’s not a safe environment. And you see this girl going through pretty much the worst three days of her life and trying to hold face through it. After doing one scene I couldn’t sleep for three or four days afterwards. It was a tough story to tell.” Although the 32-year-old has played trying roles in the past, she reveals that this isn’t necessarily a reflection of her personality. “I’m quite a positive and energetic person, but I’m also overly sensitive,” she admits. “I’m the kind of person who will start sobbing at all the prescribed sad or romantic moments in films. Even when I watch the news or an athletic competition I can get very emotional in the moment. I also worry too much, about all sorts of nonsense, but I won’t tell you about that!” A familiar face at film festivals around the world, Blunt particularly relishes her time at Cannes. However, this year, along with many fellow actors, she found herself irritated by the festival. Rather than the focus being on the cinematographic creations or the talent of the many great actors gracing the red carpet during the festival’s fortnight, the media spotlight was instead drawn to unassociated events to do with the festival’s out-ofdate attitude towards dress, which saw a group of women denied entry because they were wearing flat shoes. Blunt, like many others, was critical of the festival’s approach to such a minor detail and decided to air her thoughts on the matter during a press conference, referring to the debacle as ‘disappointing’ and said

who I am.
that “Just when you kind of think there are these new waves of equality…” while raising her eyebrow. Despite growing up in London, the starlet moved stateside to make a real go of her career. Now a fully-fledged Los Angeles resident, Blunt is well versed in the pressures of living in such an image conscious city, alongside media pressures to consistently look good. She explains that one of the most tiring parts of the industry is that “as an actress you’re always expected to look perfect, wear the latest designs and always look your best. Sometimes you just want to wear a T-shirt and jeans when you go to the grocery store or to a café, without being pulled apart in a magazine the next day. “Because even though it [celebrity life] can creep up on you sometimes, I do also find it quite easy to disengage from it. The job is what I do, it’s not who I am. It never has been and so I feel like I do have a jewelled existence in some way. I’ve always managed to see acting as a very magical job that I’m very lucky to do.
19 CHIS_July15_Emily Blunt.indd 19
When it comes to some of the bullshit you get, you just have to develop a thick skin so that it bounces off you.” Blunt gave birth to her first child, Hazel, at the beginning of the year and is embracing motherhood with open arms. A new set of priorities and responsibilities are in place for Blunt and her husband: “If I were to choose a perfect day now, for example, it’d probably be something very quiet,” she says. “Like having a barbecue with my little one, my husband and a few good friends. And a margarita. I do love a good margarita.” What would Miranda Priestly say? u

ummer is upon us, and its body-baring demands mean only S one thing: it’s time to consult the experts. There is one irrefutable leader when it comes to the creation of covetable swimwear, and that’s the Australians. With more warm weather than you can shake a stick at, it’s no wonder the Aussies have got beachwear glam sussed. Our brand á la moment is luxury label JETS from designer Jessika Allen. JETS’ latest range Ω the Preview ’15 collection Ω boasts a premium line of swimwear and resortwear (from £64) made from nylon microfibre Lycra® which is then crafted using precision-cut tailoring. Given the label’s signature is strong silhouettes, line play is a recurrent theme, as colour blocking, bold graphic prints and flashes of neon work to enhance the female form. The lined mesh panel range, Parallel, comes in flattering hues of saturated tomato and cobalt. Allen also taps into the sports luxe trend and offers crop top cut bikinis, proving that shortsleeved one-pieces and sun shirts can be sexy. (Though, models Hannah Saul and Melinda Kemp do a good job at convincing us.) All in all, it's best to do as the Preview ’15 collection suggests and, “Listen to your intuition.” So head to Selfridges online and treat yourself to JETS pieces now. u

enswear is a slow moving animal. Unlike womenswear, where a trend will be shown on the runway and instantly adopted into the style vernacular, we men take a good six seasons to buy into the fashions shown on the runways of London, Paris, Milan and beyond. Take sandals, for instance; they’ve been shown by everyone from Giorgio Armani to Lanvin for the past four seasons and only just are they being translated onto the high street. And even now Ω two years down the line Ω we’re still not quite convinced. Sometimes a brand, trend or garment comes along which we can buy into immediately. For a long time British designer Jonathan ‘JW’ Anderson was
best known for his overtly feminine menswear (think thighconstricting crepe bell bottoms and floaty silk pussybow blouses), but his work as creative director of Spanish leather goods brand Loewe has taken that off-kilter aesthetic to accessible, covetable new heights. Unsurprisingly, the range of leather goods Anderson has produced for the label is where the new direction’s strength truly lies. From remarkably tactile calfskin luggage in elegant shades of mustard, caramel and midnight blue, to chunky suede espadrilles which perfectly capture the Spanish essence of the brand, everything feels modern, luxurious and masculine (the ready-to-wear included, remarkably). all products available from loewe.com

erfectly located in the heart of Chiswick, surrounded by vintage stores and gift shops, sits Nubarose. This luxurious salon is flooded with natural light and offers a variety of high quality beauty treatments, from facials to massages. The staff are polite and welcoming, which put me at ease immediately. I was there for a facial and on arrival was promptly taken to a treatment room where I received a skin analysis and was given a suggestion of which treatment would best suit me. Unsurprisingly, after a long harsh British winter, my skin was in need of a pick-me-up. My therapist noticed that my skin was slightly aggrevated and dry, so she chose to give me the ‘Ultra Calming’ facial. Said facial is designed to reduce redness on sensitive skin. My skin was treated to a deep cleanse, a mini face peel (to stimulate blood flow), a massage using hydrating serums and then, to lock in the hydration and vitamins, was moisturised. During the facial massage you are also treated to a neck and upper back massage using calming aromatherapy oils. Nubarose use Dermalogica products, which avoid the use of harsh chemicals often found in many competitor skincare brands. The therapist also informed me that the products she used were full of essential vitamins needed to keep your skin glowing, without stripping it of its natural oils. On leaving I was offered samples of the products used during the treatment to ensure my skin would remain radiant for several days afterwards. ◆

POLO IN THE PARK
The polo season is upon us, so our editor tries the sport out for herself Wo r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

iding a horse is, despite what they say, not like riding a bike. Not taking to the saddle for, let’s say, ten years, does mean you forget some of the key skills of riding, for example: actually getting on a horse. When I was thrown back into the saddle last month, I momentarily forgot how to mount the damn thing and tried to drag myself up, ungracefully and unsuccessfully, head first onto it. I was given the chance to ride but while learning how to play the arduous sport of polo. In preparation for Ham Polo Club and Chesterton’s Polo in the Park event, I was invited to learn how to play the game under the watchful eye of the UK’s leading polo player Malcolm Borwick, who can also count himself a Royal Salute World Polo Ambassador. His unyielding approach to teaching payed off, as he took me from amateur – “I’ll take Romy, she’s never ridden before” (I had) – to Best Player of the day (I have the award to prove it). The day began with a brief history of the game, covering everything from chukkas to champagne, before we took to the field and branded our mallets. We learnt how to hit the ball in all directions with the mini mallet, before jumping on a wooden horse with the full sized stick. It wasn’t long until we were marched over to the layperson’s field and hopped onto the horses. Mine, a cool horse called Castore, was docile and responsive. By the end of the day, I was trotting around, wacking balls into the goal with ease. Learning to play polo isn’t something the club offers throughout the year, rather it’s an annual treat that keen polo watchers, riders or just curious beginners can take to before the clubs big event. What fun. ◆

flat tums are
MADE MOSTLY (BUT NOT WHOLLY) in the
Kitchen
It’s not your fault if you’ve tried to lose weight and had no lasting success, there’s a lot of conflicting information in the health and fitness industry. For example, we've been told to eat low fat foods for the last 30 years. Now however, the government has admitted that their advice to avoid butter and full fat milk has not to been based on any evidence. (Source: British Medical Journal’s on-line cardiovascular publication: Open Heart 9 Feb 2015). So if you want a lean waistline you’re going to have to do things differently. At The Park Club all trainers are educated in nutrition and have a holistic approach towards well-being. We can help you to:
STOMACH SECRETS Say goodbye to excess fat with expert advice from The Park Club
I
’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been asked how to get flat stomach. Everyone, it seems, wants to reduce fat around their midsection. Over the years I’ve told my clients to perform numerous abdominal exercises that will improve their core strength and injury-proof their backs, but if they’re not open to positive nutritional changes, alongside a progressive exercise plan, then a flat tummy just isn’t going to happen. Here at The Park Club we adapt a more honest approach to weight loss. Helping our members learn why they don’t have a lean mid-section in the first place is key. The following may be to blame:

Poor diet • Overeating / emotional eating • Lack of physical activity • Genetics / hormone imbalances • Stress • Poor sleep patterns • The use of medications or other intoxicants A client of mine recently embarked on a mission to get fitter and leaner. I told her that flat tums are made mostly (but not wholly) in the kitchen and offered to assist her on this mission. I could immediately see where she was going wrong – she had never looked at her relationship with food, especially with the culprits of excess weight: refined sugars, starches and low fat foods.
• Clean up your diet and eliminate foods that encourage fat storage/food cravings • Embark on a progressive exercise regime that will help you to move better, become lighter and feel stronger • Become aware of and reduce any intoxicants you put into your body • Take steps to reduce stress levels and get a good night’s sleep • Reach your genetic potential That’s why new members receive five personal training sessions in the first month then one every month thereafter. You’re well looked after and supported during those challenging first steps towards a better version of yourself. It doesn’t matter if it’s never worked for you before, this time will be different. We’re here with the trusted knowledge, support and motivation you need. We will help you to cut through the misinformation out there and make sure you achieve your goals. It won’t be easy but it will definitely be worth it. What have you got to lose aside from body fat? It’s time to do things differently. It’s time to meet me at The Park Club. u

Beetroot falafel
ack in season and full of flavour, a great way to make the most of the new beetroot crop is to boost the flavour of falafel. Although beetroot can taste sweet it has also an earthiness to it, which is why the Pinot Noir grape makes a great match. It might seem surprising, but the reputation of Bulgarian Pinot Noir is on the rise and it’s thanks to wines like this one. Its lovely strawberry juiciness and delicate earthy character works perfectly with the cumin and beetroot in the falafel. Soli Pinot Noir 2011, £9.99; thewinesociety.com ◆ B
Sea trout with samphire and lemon
amphire has become the darling ingredient to serve with fish in recent years, tasting like a cross between seaweed and asparagus. Eton mess
ith strawberries and raspberries back on the seasonal menu, Eton Mess is one of the best ways to enjoy their start-of-season sweetness. The richness of cream, the sweetness of meringue and the fruit-popping freshness of berries can only mean one wine and that’s a Moscato d’Asti, which is a cheeky, lightly fizzy, delicately sweet wine from Piedmont. The wines created from this grape variety are often full-bodied but manage to have a softness, which probably comes from the natural aromatics the grape reveals, such as peach and violets. FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW Ω almost gave in and tried one herself. Almost. To follow my filling starter, I had the buttermilk soft-shell crab burger with citrus mayo and sweet potato fries. The crab was incredibly fresh and delicately seasoned, while the lemon mayonnaise merely enhanced the flavour of the crustacean. The fries were good too and came with a selection of dips. My date ordered the Mac and Cheese, which was served in a large griddle pan. The mound of baked pasta was cooked in a tri-cheese sauce and topped with crispy breadcrumbs. Comfort food at its best. Then it was time for dessert. After just one bite of the warm chocolate brownie, which came served with caramel sauce and pistachio ice cream, we were committed. So much for just one bite, we

Quintessentially American Ω it’s been kitted out with classic checkerboard tiles and spacious booths Ω the extra details, such as swaths of aquamarine cloth and quirky glass bottle tumblers, help to create a chilled out vibe that could be likened to the laid-back style of Florida.
Upon arriving my dinner companion and I began our meal with a passion fruit Bellini. These summery cocktails were divine and set the tone of our feast. To start we ordered the salt and pepper squid and some Coca-Cola glazed ribs. The latter is Limeyard’s signature dish. Sticky and sweet, the half rack is cooked slow and low for eight hours and comes with a bottle of the homemade Coca-Cola sauce on the side to drizzle on top. My date Ω a conflicted vegetarian

From Deliciously Ella to The Detox Kitchen, the hottest health experts share their advice for those with special dietary requirements Wo r d s S t e p h a n i e K i n g

ummer is a time when we all suddenly seem to be concerned about health. Call it vanity, call it a step in the right direction, whatever the cause, there’s no denying the extraordinary force compelling us to pack some #cleaneating into our lives. But aside from the ample healthy living fodder Instagram provides, there’s the ever-increasing portion of society who struggle daily with their diet not because of #summerbodygoals, but because of special dietary requirements. Well, Absolutely is here to help. We’ve enlisted the UK’s hottest health and nutrition experts to demystify the confusing world of food allergies,
intolerances and lifestyles imposing certain food intake restrictions. Nutritionist Rob Hobson, one half of The Detox Kitchen, gives valuable nutrition advice, where his business partner and The Detox Kitchen head chef, Lily Simpson provides scrumptious, easy-to-make recipe ideas. The Yes Chef Tess Ward and Honestly Healthy founder Natasha Corrett put forward some equally delicious dishes found within their new cookbooks. To garnish, Ella Woodward of internationally acclaimed food blog Deliciously Ella reveals her top health product available on the market right now, and Madeleine Shaw shares her food philosophy ahead of her Get the Glow book release. So dig in; there’s plenty of no fat, meaty reading to sink your teeth into.

FOR THOSE WITH ALLERGIES icking off with the most significant dictator of diet, food allergies have been identified by the World Health Organisation as the No. 1 environmental epidemic disease facing children of the developed world. One of the most common is hypersensitivity to tree nuts and peanuts (technically a legume), according to leading allergy resource Allergy UK. Parents can now breathe a sigh of relief, because within Simpson and Hobson’s The Detox Kitchen Bible and Ward’s upcoming release, The Naked Diet, are nut-free salads substituting in seeds, such as sunflower and pumpkin, which Simpson says “add that nutty depth of flavour and a good crunch.” Knowing a few nut-free recipes is especially important nowadays, seeing as 2015’s study conducted by King’s College London’s Professor Gideon Lack, published in February’s New England Journal of Medicine, found that the incidence of food allergy continues to increase, where 1 in 50 school age children in the UK suffer from a peanut allergy – over double the statistics recorded in the last decade. Clearly awareness and knowledge of foods to avoid / completely nut-free products to purchase is key, as allergic reactions can vary in severity – from mild responses of itching and swelling of the lips and mouth, to potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis. Thankfully health food stores such as Holland & Barrett have an extensive range of brands – including our favourites, Biona, Clearspring, Meridian Foods, Naturya, and Propercorn – promising products that are prepared in factories totally devoid of the common potential allergens, nuts, fish / K

FOOD & DRINK / HEALTHY LIVING shellfish, kiwis, eggs, soya, and celery. But for the 20% of the population experiencing reactions to food that aren’t indicative of an allergy, a statistic estimated by the British Dietetic Association, Corrett suggests this may be due to a food intolerance: “If you feel tired, groggy, lacking in energy, [or have] bad skin, look at what’s on your plate.”
NATASHA CORRETT'S HONESTLY HEALTHY CLEANSE BAKED EGG AVOCADOS
FOR THOSE WITH INTOLERANCES ccording to Allergy UK’s 2007 Food Allergy and Food Intolerance Report, insensitivity to certain foods affects almost half of the population. One of the most well known of these intolerances is that of wheat. To summarise it simply, the body’s immune system negatively responds to a protein within wheat (as well as rye and barley in the case of Coeliac disease, which can be managed with a gluten-free (GF) diet) causing a reaction, be it “bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhoea,” as Hobson explains. Testing is the only way to get a definitive answer, and YorkTest kits are an easy way to get a comprehensive analysis of your tolerance of different foods and potential allergens. “People with intolerances or allergies often have an impaired gut, so foods that are gut healing, like chicken stock, are A

good to get in,” advises nutritional health coach Shaw. “Eggs, avocados, and sweet potatoes” are her other nutrient-packed recommendations, with Ward adding these grocery items are “really beneficial to your [intake of] good fats and vitamins.” The Yes Chef also suggests opting for cooked vegetables over raw, “as they are easier on the digestion.” Simpson’s Cajun Chicken with Avocado Salad & Mango Salsa, Pumpkin Curry, and Baked Aubergine with Lemon Yoghurt & Pomegranate are brilliant GF recipes found in The Detox Kitchen Bible. Alternatively, BOL Foods’ ready-made meal pots (stocked in Sainsbury's and Tesco) are affordable last-minute food solutions, where its Super

Quinoa Squash, Super Roasted Beetroot, Mexican Sweet Potato Chilli, and Thai Thom Yum are all great GF options. With respect to lactose intolerance, which Hobson says “affects about 5% of the UK population,” individuals who are unable to digest this sugar molecule found within dairy products “should look for alternative sources of calcium, such as dark green vegetables, pulses, plant milks, salmon, and dried fruits.” Corrett and Shaw both suggest using Rude Health’s milks for their recipes, and Corrett’s Coconut Cauliflower Tart, a useful dinner idea, is one of the many dairy-free gems included in her latest title, Honestly Healthy Cleanse. Ward also notes CO YO coconut milk yoghurts as handy breakfast options, which are best sprinkled with Primrose Kitchen’s GF muesli. FOR THOSE WITH DIETARY REQUIREMENTS hile there are many health benefits to embracing meat-free lifestyles, these diets “require a little more planning,” says Hobson. “Vegetarians and vegans can struggle to get enough omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron and vitamin B12.” Unilaterally, however, our veritable food authorities emphasise a well-balanced diet, where Corrett clarifies this means “lots of vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts and seeds… Just remember to eat the rainbow!” Simpson and Shaw also caution those

on low sugar or low fat diets to be wary of “most processed ‘healthy foods’,” which Simpson says are usually “hiding something. If they’re low fat they’re probably laden with sugar and vice versa.” Although one packaged food range even diabetics can enjoy includes BeLOVeD’s Date Nectar products. Receiving the stamp of approval from young foodie Woodward, “Date nectar is one of the best to add natural sweetness to food. I use it on everything – from porridge, to smoothies, chia puddings, crumbles, muffins, cakes, and icing.” On the savoury side, Shaw’s quick snack ideas of grilled chicken with hummus or “roasting up some veggies with coconut oil and smoked paprika and serving with rocket, avocado and pumpkin seeds” are perfect for individuals aiming to reduce their salt intake or manage their cholesterol. Ward also admits she’s “a sucker” for Kallø Organic Rice and Corn Cakes: “You can layer them with different toppings to enjoy as a low carb snack. One of my favourite [combinations] is chopped tomatoes, feta and pomegranate with chopped coriander and spring onions.” Evidently there’s vast array of wholesome meals that cater to special diets. And with the help of Corrett, Hobson, Simpson, Ward, Shaw and Woodward, you’ll never be without recipes that are as nutritious as they are delicious. Suffering from food sensitivity issues? Corrett sums it up nicely: “There are so many options out there now for people with allergies and intolerances, you just need to find the Free From range and create the healthy alternative.”

ROME
SPOTLIGHT ON
Real Roman food and culture hy is it that when in Rome we immediately head to the Trevi and the Colosseum? That’s not what the Romans do. This city is not only steeped in ancient history but culinary culture too. Make a point of seeing both sides and it’s impossible to leave disappointed. W

S E E . For art, the Galleria Borghese is a brilliant alternative to the crowded Vatican Museum. Limiting the number of visitors allowed inside, you are given just two hours to explore. Stay on the move and you’ll see works by Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini. If architectural spectacle is what you’re after, venture 45 minutes out of Rome to the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli. Built during the 2nd century, this archaeological site was once a hub of power and includes the remains of the famous Maritime Theatre.
This CITY is not only steeped in
ANCIENT HISTORY but CULINARY CULTURE too S TAY. Just 15 minutes from the city, the Rome Cavalieri is the perfect base for exploration. Offering the tranquility of a resort, hotel highlights include the La Prairie Grand Spa, outdoor pools and a record-breaking multi-million pound art collection. While the entire hotel is on the swanky side, you can’t beat the luxury found in the hotel’s 25 suites. In the penthouse you’ll find original Warhol prints, a rare marble and malachite hydro-massage bathroom with Swarovski crystal fixtures, and a private roof terrace where the twinkling panoramic view includes the Vatican. Relentlessly passionate about food, the Cavalieri is also home to the only 3 Michelin starred restaurant in Rome, La Pergola. Run by Heinz Beck, the food here is something else. His famous fagottelli is an unconventional pasta dish that sees creamy carbonara sauce encased within the parcels rather than poured on top. G O . Every restaurant in Rome claims to serve the best Italian food so do your research before heading out. We found real Roman fare at the authentic neighbourhood trattoria, Osteria dell’Angelo. Full of Italians drinking local wine and eating homemade pasta it’s worth booking a table in advance. For Roman cuisine without the foreplaning, we recommend a food safari with Eating Italy (eatingitalyfoodtours. com). Taking you through the foodie neighbourhood of Testaccio, this guided tour lets you escape the crowds and experience the city like a local – on foot. One thing you must try en route is the suppì from Trapizzino: these deep fried balls of saucy risotto contain an oozing chunk of mozzarella. Devilishly good. u Elizabeth Hutton

TRAVEL / ROUND-UP VIENNA SPOTLIGHT ON
Retail therapy and decadent balls ienna can now add shopping destination to its already impressive offering of baroque and gothic architecture, outrageous charity balls and famous hotels, making it the ideal city break this summer. V
S E E . Vienna is a historically and culturally rich city and, with the exception of the Belvedere Gallery (permanent home to the works of Gustav Klimt) and the Central Cemetery (even more permanent home to Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert), most of this history can be found in the First District. Enlist a tour guide to take you on a walking tour and you will notice the wide streets, completely devoid of litter and the air, free from smog, courtesy of a healthy breeze blowing off the Danube. They will undoubtedly lead you past the impressive, crescent-shaped Hofburg Imperial Palace, former home of the Habsburgs and stop off at the famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an epic Gothic edifice with a stunning tiled roof that bears the double-headed eagle that is symbolic of the empire ruled from Vienna. If walking seems like too much effort, hail a fiaker (the Viennese horse and carts that throng the First District) for a leisurely excursion around the city centre. If shopping is the main priority, the newly built Golden Quarter, located off Am Hof Square is a must-visit. Signa Group’s latest project manages to pay tribute to the UNESCO World Heritage Site it inhabits with tasteful and uniform signage and top-end brands, from Valentino to Vivienne Westwood, not to mention remarkable luxury apartments and office spaces with breathtaking views.
S TAY. The Park Hyatt Vienna is hard to beat in the hotel stakes. Located in the picturesque Am Hof Square, the Park Hyatt opened in June 2014 and has quickly established itself as one of the city’s places to be seen. What with 143 luxurious rooms (including 35 suites), the fully kitted out Arany Spa housing the largest indoor swimming pool in Vienna and The Bank, the hotel’s exceptional restaurant, even walking out of the front door is a wrench. The decor is in tune with the historic roots of the building, formerly a bank, with seams of mother of pearl running through it and luxurious natural materials such as onyx from Iran and marble from Italy dominating the rooms and common areas. Those looking to enjoy a drink of an evening can keep it traditional in the hotel’s Lounge where cigar smoking and whisky drinking is par for the course or head down to Pearl, the more contemporary bar that spills out onto the street. G O . Vienna is known for the lavish balls that make up its social season and although the Life Ball does not fit into the traditional category (you won’t need to learn to waltz to have a good time) it has become a fixture in the city since the first event was organised by Gary Kessler with the help of some famous friends in 1993. It is now the largest charity ball in Europe and raises hundreds of thousands
57 NH_June15_Euro_Getaway.indd 57
If shopping is A PRIORITY the newly built GOLDEN QUARTER is a mustvisit of pounds to fight HIV and AIDS every year. The theme for 2015 was ‘Gold’ and in standard flamboyant fashion, the red carpet was awash with gold-bedecked revellers, some wearing little more than body paint and others kitted out in golden bondage gear and chains. The Opening Ceremony featured fire and tributes being brought up to the stage, which were received by dancers dressed as Klimt paintings. Bizarre and wonderful celebrity appearances included Charlize Theron, Sean Penn and Dita von Teese with musical performances from Mary J Blige, Sophie Ellis Bextor and, of course, Conchita Wurst. A wonderful, surreal, outlandish and fabulous event, the Life Ball shows Vienna at its best.u Catherine Hales

AMSTERDAM SPOTLIGHT ON
Dutch luxe
msterdam is an obvious choice for a short city break. It’s quicker to get to than Edinburgh, smaller and more manageable than Paris and absolutely everyone speaks English. A
S E E . The fantastic Rijksmuseum reopened in 2013 after a 10-year closure and the new arrangement is truly magnificent, adding a stylish modern below-ground level atrium and liberating lots of previously paintedover frescoes. Curators have rearranged works according to century, instead of separating paintings from ceramics and so on. The audioguides offer a good selection of tours including a highlights one that takes in all the predictable essentials (Rembrand’s Nightwatch, Vermeer’s Milkmaid) as well as the wonderful dolls house room, unmissable for anyone who has read The Miniaturist. There’s also a lovely 20th century gallery right at the top of the building, as well as a brilliant souvenir shop.
S TAY. Amsterdam hasn’t traditionally been known for its lavishness; more for its informality, tolerance and laid-back charm. So with last year’s opening of a new Waldorf Astoria hotel on the Herengracht, the potential for luxury has stepped up a notch, and the city’s most luxe rooms (and its most expensive) can now be found in a fabulous canalside location within easy walking distance of the Rembrandplein, the Hermitage and everywhere really. There are lots of striking things about the hotel, which is made up of six 17th century townhouses knocked together to create a sprawling, 93-room residence that boasts not only the city’s biggest private garden but also an insanely luxurious Guerlain spa, an exclusive two-Michelin star restaurant and a separate all-day brasserie (named Goldfinch, nodding to both Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel’s Amsterdam setting and the hotel’s arty connections) and a fabulous underground cocktail bar (the building is a former bank and this is the vault; you can still see the old safe boxes, some of them mysteriously locked). Ask for a room with a canal view and appreciate the spacious dimensions

Street art in Athens on’t always believe what you read in the papers. Greece might be in the depth of a financial crisis, but the atmosphere in the capital is a million miles away from austerity. D
S E E . The street art. While it’s possible to wander the streets and stumble across it, a tour is the best way to spot the urban masterpieces. Alternative Athens will organize a street artist to give you an inside look at the very best the streets have to offer. Our guide, Achilles, points out his own enigmatic painted faces as we walk around Psiri, the vibrant, graffitiladen equivalent of London’s Shoreditch. Each of the paintings tells a story: a series of ‘sad princesses’ tells of an artist trying to win back his lover, a crowned dog against a backdrop of flames is the hero of the 2008 riots. One great example of this is Six Dogs on Avramiotou St. Hidden down a back alley, Six Dogs is an arty concept venue where you can find live music, exhibitions and an enchanted courtyard. A similar idea but with more historic charm is The Art Foundation, aka Taf on Normanou St. Behind the wrought iron doors and through a dark, stone-clad corridor is a former communal house dating back to 1871 that once homed 12 families. Around the courtyard bar, the rickety wooden rooms are filled with art being exhibited – perfect for perusing with a drink in hand. ooked by the lovely Dora, there was plenty of delicious food to eat. From red lentil and coconut soup to white fish with green chilli and coriander, we were treated to nutritious meals everyday. Refined sugar, gluten, wheat, dairy and caffeine were all banned, and we were advised to give up these vices a week before our stay. If you had followed the pretox, the diet wouldn’t have been so hard, but one of my fellow Yeotowners didn’t prepare herself and spent much of the time longing for a glass of wine. I prepared and managed to avoid any cravings. One downside is that my skin broke out, but a clear complexion soon followed and, most importantly, stayed. As for the lack of caffeine, my energy levels skyrocketed and, despite since returning to caffine, I’ve managed to cut my two-a-day habit down to just two-a-week. For anyone that knows me, that’s quite a feat. ◆
Y
ogi or not, starting your day with a 7.15am yoga class is great. Undoubtedly my favourite part of the Yeotown philosophy, the morning yoga sessions helped stretch me out before breakfast. The rest of our wellbeing schedule was all about being active Ω on the first day we hiked, on the second we cycled, and on the third we worked out our core in an intense CrossFit class. Adapted to suit all fitness levels, there was no moment when you felt out of sorts. As a pretty active person, I was surprised to discover that I had lost 1.5lbs during my stay, which was nothing on one of my fellow guests, who left Devon a staggering 12 pounds lighter. The difference between us? I was there to cleanse, while he was there to completely rehaul his lifestyle and diet. Yeotown is the kind of place that facilitates both. ◆

PLANT of the Month
Allium Sphaerocephalon llium sphaerocephalon are fragrant purple flowers on top of wiry stems. Not only do they add texture to summer borders, they can also be planted in the autumn and forgotten about until they pop up the following year. These bulbs are undemanding and provides a great nectar stop for bees, at a time when the bee population is in decline. Don’t be tempted to plant only one, they can be planted in blocks of 30 or 50 even in the smallest of gardens. kategouldgardens.com

seat is designed to take the stress out of travelling – particularly for those finding it difficult to get out of the house or adapting to having a second child. With the Doona, there’s no need to transfer your little one from car seat to buggy; the seat changes into a stroller in less than ten seconds and at the touch of a button. It’s not a complete travel system, in the sense that you may need another buggy for all-day use (possibly one with all-terrain wheels, or a newborn-friendly carrycot), but if you’re buying a car-seat anyway, why not get one with its own set of integral wheels? The Doona comes with an orthopaedic, hypo-allergenic inner cushion for younger babies and other key benefits, including chassis suspension and a rocking function. ◆

Do I need to employ an agent or consultant? rivate education is increasingly becoming a P luxury and an investment. Ensuring that you are receiving value for money and a sufficient return is not only prudent but will alleviate any anxieties you may have about your child’s progress. With their in-depth knowledge of independent schools, educational consultants identify what academic structure and environment will best support your offspring and encourage them to thrive. Bonas MacFarlane leads the way on this and is unique in providing a mentoring programme following the placement. This closely monitors your child’s progress throughout their school career, maximising all opportunities and pushing the pupil to realise their potential. A note of warning: it is wise to be aware of rogue agents. Having sprung up from business ability rather than experience and an organic interest in the British education system, agents are frequently driven by fee-taking agreements made with schools. As such, when choosing a consultant reputation should be tantamount to ensure first class results.
Private education

arking about with horses at school might seem to be the sole preserve of smart girls at public school with hair as glossy as their pony’s manes, but horses are trotting into schools in surprising places. Equine therapy, or more specifically Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an established practice in the US that is gaining popularity here. EAL aims to enable children to achieve educational goals by interacting with horses, particularly pupils who find it hard to engage with mainstream schooling such as those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Its sister therapy, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) uses similar, often one-on-one techniques to help and heal many groups of people, such as traumatised children, sufferers of PTSD and recovering addicts. They are even using it for treatments at the Priory. Last November, as part of National Anti-Bullying Week, groups of London school pupils aged between 12-15 years old were able to work with shire horses in Hyde Park alongside EAL therapist Dr Andreas Liefooghe. “Humans can learn a lot from watching horses,” says Dr Andreas Liefooghe. The main aim of the programme was to teach teenagers co-operative group work and inclusion rather than competition and exclusion. The children learnt to interact with the animals through observing their responses and communicating non-verbally, learning valuable lessons about themselves and teamwork along the way. EAL is proving particularly valuable for children with issues such as ADHD, autism and attachment disorders. Children with SEN can learn about themselves and others, processing and discussing feelings and behaviour patterns they may struggle to articulate. Treatments can be gentle, introductory sensory techniques, such as grooming or petting a horse, or even decorating it with paint. The benefits of sensory work are profound, involving fine motor skills, verbal communication and social interaction.
77 Chiswick_JULY15_Education.indd 77
The reason EAL works so well, says Rosie Edwards, who runs the charity Learning Through Horses, is that “Horses are like mirrors – they reflect the emotions around them, whether excitement, anger, joy or sadness.” Edwards offers EAL courses for pupils in London schools; working with six pupils at a time, she teaches them the basics of horsewhispering – training horses using body language. This requires “fine-tuned” control and observation techniques, says Edwards. Most importantly, “in order to train horses, students must get control of their own emotions”. Edwards sees the difference EAL makes right in front of her eyes. “Most pupils are referred to us because of challenging behaviour but we see very little of it here,” she says. “Plus the threat of getting kicked in the head is a little more real,” she laughs. Edwards also notes that pupils renowned for non-attendance never miss a day at her stables. This motivation can itself reap rewards. Last September, Edwards ran a programme aimed at getting young people back into employment. She now receives regular requests for job references from those pupils who have made successful job applications. “That gives me massive gratification,” she says. R E B ECCA N O O N A N
I
grew up in Surrey and my first passion was football – I played at county level for the Guildford and Shire leagues and had a spell with Fulham FC’s youth team. My interest in property surfaced when I was young – by the age of 18, I had purchased my first property as a landlord. When I was 19, I ran an independent sales and lettings agency in my home county. These experiences were invaluable to my career, and having been a landlord for thirteen years now, I understand my clients’ needs better than most. After working for a real mix of estate agents, from independents to large corporate organisations, moving to Featherstone Leigh was when I found everything fell into place. I love working for the company for many reasons, but one of the most important to me is the integrity behind the brand. We pride ourselves on giving good and honest advice backed up by fact, and being part of an organization that insists on this approach is very refreshing in
EAST SHEEN HAS A SAFE, SEMI-RURAL FEEL, A CHARMING COMMUNITY SPIRIT, AND LOCAL SCHOOLS ARE HIGHLY SOUGHTAFTER
this industry. I have been with Featherstone Leigh for five years now, and I moved from the flagship Richmond office to head up the East Sheen lettings team three years ago. Since settling down here, I have realised East Sheen is the perfect fit for me. First and foremost, I am a family man – I am one of four siblings, and have two children, a beautiful daughter who will be five this year, and a two year old son who shares his birthday with Prince George! My daughter will be starting ‘big school’ in September, so I can fully understand the importance of helping families
find the right property before the term starts, and how vital it is to pick the right location for raising a family. East Sheen has a safe, semi-rural feel, a charming community spirit, and local schools are highly sought-after, making the area an excellent and increasingly popular choice with young families and corporate tenants. As well as being a peaceful part of London, with an abundance of green spaces on your doorstep, East Sheen has all the transport links that a commuter could require. Mortlake station runs a regular South West trains service into Waterloo which takes less than 30 minutes, and there are plenty of bus routes running along the Upper Richmond Road West towards Chiswick and Hammersmith. When I’m not working, I love DIY and I actually make my own furniture when I get the chance. East Sheen has some fantastic independent shabby-chic style furniture shops, which are great for inspiration. u

There have been many memorable properties; one in particular sticks out, a house in Marylebone designed by the architect Robert Adam in 1770. Adam is responsible for some of the country's most beautiful architecture.
WHICH FACTORS IN YOUR AREA WILL MOST AFFECT HOUSE PRICES IN THE COMING MONTHS/ YEARS? he main factor that will continue to affect the Chiswick housing market in the coming years is the rising prices in central London. This increase is already driving buyers who are looking to upsize out of central areas. To be able to move to a larger property, the buyers have to

Another factor is the increase in international investors buying property in central areas – this is also affecting local buyers, meaning they continue to look further afield and out into the suburbs for affordable property. Both these factors are having a strong effect on house prices.

hat there is a new weekly one on Saturdays in the garden of the Black Lion pub down by the river in Hammersmith… yes, yes obviously you mean the property market, but I would definitely check out this delicious new farmer’s version! During the uncertainty of the lead up to the election, the lettings market held its own and continues to remain stable as we approach 2015’s halfway mark. If anything, we expect to see the market strengthening due to fewer properties being available than this time last year, meaning that those that are on the market to rent and are well presented are quickly attracting offers at asking or near asking prices. Demand for one and two bedroom properties remains high and we are moving into the ‘big house’ season when the majority of families move, so we look forward to working with an increasing number of new landlords over the summer months.

t is now a prerequisite that anyone requiring a mortgage needs to provide varied and detailed documentation to support any application. If you unaware of these requirements, you may find out that you have been offered less money than you need or even worse, rejected completely. This can lead to huge disappointment and frustration for all concerned. Before you start looking at property, you should make an appointment to see a professional mortgage adviser. They can prepare you with what documentation you will need to provide and what you may need to do in order to be agreed for a mortgage and avoid any unnecessary delays. A tip would be to start gathering the information required as soon as possible. This includes payslips, bank statements, and P60s. Your reward for doing all of this should be peace of mind and a well-earned head start to put you in the best buying position. u
