e’re all guilty of complaining about our job - no matter how much, deep down, we love what we do or how senior a position we hold. But every recent grumble or moan from my lips has been coupled with pangs of remorse since watching a Panorama exposé on the dark underworld of Bangladesh’s clothing industry. Seeing footage of human beings working like dogs for appalling wages brought home the words of Nicola Giuggioli, founder and CEO of ethical consultancy company Eco-Age. Too often the terms ‘ethical’ and ‘luxury’ sit in contention - and the eye tends to roll skywards on the subject of eco-friendly fashion and its steep prices. Why should we be made to feel guilty for buying a whole outfit for a tenner when we’re financially restrained in every other aspect of our lives? The west London mentality is, however, a very green one, and Giuggioli’s passionate yet pragmatic approach to sustainability will ring true with locals. What he says may not always be easy to swallow – an inconvenient truth, as it were – but it will certainly make you think twice before hitting the bargain bins at Primark. Also this month, we’re taking a look at the fascinating history of the iconic Strawberry Hill House. Fancy a fine vintage instead? We chat to the lovely Mrs Izzy Judd over a pot of tea on page 57 about how she turned her love of antique fair shopping into a brand new business, and how her husband has stood by her every step of the way. Want to indulge a touch of schadenfreude? Turn to page 47 for my wheeze-by-wheeze account of a day of REVIVAL Boot Camp at North Sheen Recreation Ground. Well, the party season is once again just around the corner and you know what they say: no pain, no gain. I do hope you enjoy the issue.

HOUSE ON THE HILL Chris Baldacci takes a closer look at Horace Walpole’s Gothic fairy tale castle

S
trawberry Hill House is hailed as the starting point of the Gothic Revival movement. This sumptuous stately pile was commissioned by the famous politician and essayist Horace Walpole, who, when looking for a plot of land in fashionable Twickenham for a summer retreat, came across a couple of small cottages and decided to build his ‘little Gothic castle’. And now, thanks to an £8.9 million restoration grant, Strawberry Hill House has been brought back to its former Gothic glory, using accurate period construction techniques to keep the original splendour of the castle. Son of the very first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, Horace had enough funds to expand Strawberry Hill four times, adding on turrets and battlements to get that archetypal gothic aesthetic of the late medieval period. The fact that Strawberry Hill was built and added to over the years by different architects has lead to a slightly disjointed look to the building, but that’s also what gives it a lot of its arresting charm. Michael Snodin, chairman of trustees for Strawberry Hill House, says: ‘The most striking external feature of Strawberry Hill is its irregular plan and broken picturesque silhouette.’ The interiors were designed by Walpole and a couple of amateur architect friends taking inspiration from medieval cathedrals and abbeys. The rooms were created to be a piece of theatre and Walpole intended them to house his collection of curios and antiques, the collection of which was a lifelong passion for Walpole. The interiors took inspiration from details like the doorways of St Paul’s Cathedral to create the bookcases of the grand library, or recreating the vaulted ceilings of a medieval tomb for the Tribune room. The real reason Strawberry Hill was built was to house Walpole’s vast collection of interesting antiques, many of which are on display at the V&A today. While the house and interior were designed to recreate the ‘gloom’ of a cathedral or abbey, the gardens are a place of light, joy and nature, or ‘riant’, in the parlance of the era. It was high fashion at the time to include features - follies – as they were known, such as hermitages and to use Mediterranean designs, but Walpole thought that such ideas did not complement the very English nature of the garden he had envisaged. Walpole was the first to create a landscape garden attached to a purposely designer house. The nine-acre plot comprises a lawn and meadow, edged by trees and a terrace that overlooks the Thames and one famous bench, shaped like a clam shell, which may be one of the first examples of Rococo design. The gardens have recently been restored to their original beauty, with an open grove of lime trees and an enchantingly titled theatrical shrubbery, which was quite popular in the 18th century but fell out of fashion later on. Visiting the gardens has the added bonus of being absolutely free as well. Thanks to the restoration grant, Strawberry Hill House and Gardens are open for the public to wander around and marvel at the artistic visions of one man, with many events happening in and around the grounds all year long. Horace Walpole built this house as a fairy tale showpiece and it’s certainly a sight to behold. strawberryhillhouse.org.uk 15

VILLAGE PEOPLE
In an extract from her new book, Zena Alkayat offers an insider’s guide to Barnes
O
f all London’s Thameside villages, Barnes is perhaps the most alluring. On any given day you’ll see rowers powering down its snaking stretch of river, locals making the most of a scenic promenade and families feeding the ducks at the impossibly picturesque village pond. The Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race in April is a yearly highlight here, though the community’s willingness to organise events mean there’s always something worth pitching up for. Barnes lays claim to one of the biggest summer fêtes in London, for example, as well as an annual bonfire night and a weekly
farmers’ market. There’s an antiques fair on the first Saturday of every month and nightly live jazz at the legendary music venue-cum-pub The Bull’s Head on Lonsdale Road. All this civic activity, coupled with an idyllic setting, keeps demand for houses (and their prices) astronomically high. One of the most desirable spots is the river-facing Terrace where Gustav Holst (composer of The Planets) and Dame Ninette de Valois (founder of The Royal Ballet) once lived. You can spy their Blue Plaques among other sights on the two-kilometre circular Barnes Trail – just follow the metal markers embedded in the pavement.

Transform your skin from within Swap your Starbucks for a Skinade and drink your way to firmer, healthier and younger-looking skin. You’ll see visible results in as little as two weeks – and you won’t be disappointed.
The secret to healthy skin The collagen matrix below the skin’s surface is the support structure that keeps skin elastic, healthy and youthful. This matrix degenerates with age, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes and sagging skin. Skincare products applied topically only manage to penetrate the skin’s outer layer. The solution? At Skinade, we believe that better skin comes from within. Formulated by leading UK scientists, Skinade is a 150ml innovative collagen drink that works from the inside out to rebuild and strengthen the collagen matrix. The result? Firmer, smoother, more even toned, radiant and youthful-looking skin.
How does Skinade work? Skinade is a simple and elegant solution to supplying the skin’s layers with the collagen and micronutrients it needs to regenerate new, healthy skin cells. The high-grade collagen in Skinade is easily absorbed by the body and transported to where it’s needed most – to renew your skin, hair and nails.
moisturising, but it should be incorporated into your daily skincare regime – for dramatic results. The pleasant-tasting formula contains only top quality, organic ingredients with natural flavours, no artificial colouring, and fewer than 35 calories. For best results, we recommended that you drink one bottle every morning after breakfast.
What results can you expect to see? After 4 to 6 days, your skin will feel softer and more hydrated. You’ll start to see visible results after 10 to 14 days, with most consumers noticing a healthier, more radiant complexion. After 2 to 4 weeks, your skin will appear firmer and plumper, with a noticeable reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. These positive results will continue to build for as long as you incorporate Skinade in your daily skincare regime.

FIRE WALK WITH ME
David Lynch’s surreal TV series about a murdered girl and one very strange town enjoys such cult status that an annual festival is held in its honour in the small Washington town in which it was filmed. The good news is that London fans needn’t book a flight to the middle of nowhere to get their Twin Peaks fix, the Riverside Studios will once again be hosting a UK version this year, with special screenings and celebrity guests including Madchen Amick (Shelly Johnson) in her first ever festival appearance. 30 November; twinpeaksukfestival.com

‘Who the hell is Rula Lenska?’ TV host Johnny Carson was prompted to ask this on the Tonight Show after Lenska’s famous commercials for Alberto VO5 in the 1970s, but from iconic acting roles in television and on stage to a now infamous encounter with George Galloway in Celebrity Big Brother,, the life of Rula Lenska has been quite an extraordinary one. Now the Chiswick resident is ready to spill the beans in her aptly titled autobiography, Rula: My Colourful Life. Expect the unexpected. £20, Biteback Publishing

OLYMPIC CINEMA
Since starting life as the Byfeld Hall back in 1906, the Olympic Studios has undergone many changes and has seen some of the world’s most famous faces step through its doors – from Led Zeppelin to The Spice Girls – and after four years of closure, October marks its grand re-opening. Ostensibly, The Olympic has returned to its roots as a local cinema, but the reality is far more impressive. Not only will it house a two-screen cinema for mainstream and art house movies, but The Olympic will also serve as a members club, recording studio and house a cool cafe and dining room. A New
BEGINNING Absolutely talks to Mark Hudson, Headmaster of recently opened Kew House School
O
n a chilly Monday morning, a cluster of children stands patiently in front of the entrance of Kew House School. A sense of trepidation is apparent as the children wave sheepishly to the huddle of proud parents photographing the event on their smartphones. Any first day jitters are mixed with abundant excitement – from both students and teachers alike – for this is no ordinary first day. This is the official launch of Kew House School, a pristine new independent senior school opened by Maria and Edward Gardener, founders of Ravenscourt Park and Kew Green Prep schools. ‘We just want this to be an ordinary day for the children’ Headmaster Mark Hudson comments, but beneath his professional demeanour he positively beams with pride. The building is more akin to a smart college than a secondary school – it’s petite and thoroughly contemporary; equipped with every kind of facility a student could desire. Following a short speech from Edward Gardener, the ribbon is cut and the pupils unleash a sea of green and blue balloons into the sky – the colours of Kew House School and a symbol of the beginning of a new journey for the young students and those that have made the school a reality... Congratulations on the opening of Kew House School. What was the process of starting the school? MH: The school was the dream of Maria and Edward Gardener. The
parents of the two preparatory schools had for many years asked them to open a senior school to provide continuity of ethos and approach to education for the students. A great deal of thought went into deciding what sort of senior school Kew House should be. Maria (Gardener), Principal of Kew Green Preparatory School and Theo (Brehony), MD of London Preparatory Schools Ltd., both have extensive experience within the preparatory school sector, particularly building strong ties with many other senior schools. They knew that it was critical to identify a building that would accommodate the kind of school they were seeking to open. Kew House provided that building. What is the ethos of KHS? We wanted the school to have traditional values but to reflect a
modern approach to education. KHS recognises this and brings a fresh and pioneering approach to school life. A broad, balanced curriculum is in place offering a full range of opportunities to students. How does KHS differ to other independent schools in London? As a small school we feel we can offer our students an extensive programme with flexibility and choice. Sport, classical studies such as Latin, science and creativity feature highly. We are offering an extended day whereby students can come in early and stay late to work on their projects, allowing a flexible approach to their studies. Our open door policy welcomes parents into the school to see a teacher, join in with appropriate lessons or simply to have a cup of coffee with a friend in our café.
The school is equipped with state of art facilities. We have science laboratories, a music recording studio, a food technology room, and a design and technology workshop. High quality teaching coupled with superb facilities means that I am confident of providing a rich, balanced and enjoyable curriculum. The school has the capacity to hold approx 600 students, which we will build up to over time. Each year will have a three form entry comprising 22 students. For now we are concentrating on filling our Year 7 as a result of high demand pursuant to 11+. We do wish to emphasise that there will be an intake from other schools and not just from Ravenscourt Park and Kew Green Prep. There will also be a balanced girl to boy ratio. kewhouseschool.com
Sporting chance Sport and Physical education is prominent in the KHS curriculum ‘Kew House is in a privileged position.’ Says Mark, ‘We have the River Thames on our doorstep with all its water sports facilities such as rowing, canoeing and kayaking. It is also opposite Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre which provides facilities for other sports like badminton, netball, basketball. It is hoped that we will also be able to offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as students reach the appropriate age for participation in this excellent scheme.’

UNCHARTERED
WATERS
Yachtswoman Tracy Edwards chats to Absolutely about her venture into the world of online safety
R
Q&A
ecord breaking yachtswoman Tracy Edwards MBE understands exactly how to stay safe whilst navigating through danger. Her motto during the 1990 Whitbread Round The World Race was ‘better prepared than scared’ in the treacherous seas. She became the first person in yachting history to skipper an all-female crew and crossed the finishing line in second place. In 2005, Tracy retired from sailing and now dedicates her work to empowering people to stay safe and to protect themselves in the real and virtual world through her new venture, Safer World Training. Tell us about Safer World Training Safer World Training provides courses and workshops in online safety and personal safety in all situations. It is only by understanding potential danger that we can avoid it so we empower through education. Who are you aiming this at? Everyone! From very young children who begin to go online, parents who want to understand the online jungle and potential hazards for children – particularly 12-13 year olds who are most at risk – women who want the
confidence to feel safe and want to learn how to deal with emergency situations, people working abroad in risky areas, students travelling abroad through to the over 50s who want to understand the online world and protect themselves. Why did you decide to embark on this venture? The world is certainly a far riskier place than when I grew up. Every day we read headlines about internet trolls, cyberbullying, students travelling and facing peril... These issues won’t go away, but what you can do is look at how to stay safe and mitigate risk. I believe that we must all take control and responsibility
for our safety. I’m definitely more aware about this since having a child and particularly now that she’s a teenager. I looked into the whole issue of safety, started to talk to other parents and then people of all ages. Whilst the internet provides piecemeal information, there was nothing available off-line which really tackled the whole issue of safety – both online and offline for 21st century needs. I’ve teamed up with some of the best experts in the country including one of the UK’s most experienced child protection investigators as well as an SAS-trained safety adviser to run the courses and workshops. We’ll make sure that everyone can take positive yet simple steps to make their world safer. There has been call for websites such as Ask.FM be banned. Do you think this is the right action? No-one really knows the answer to this question. There are many theories, but remember that we are in unchartered waters here. If websites are banned do they just pop up somewhere else in a country which has even less regulations? Therefore is there a better way to regulate these sites that involves global co-operation? The withdrawal of advertising from some of these sites has had the positive effect of speeding up their safeguarding efforts. What is clear, though, is that educating your child and engaging with them and their technology is absolutely the best way to keep them safe. DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
Bestselling author (and former Children’s Laureate) Jacqueline Wilson is one of the country’s most prolific and popular writers and her endearing yet unflinching storytelling never shies from the dark side of modern family life. Wilson’s most recent novel tells the story of Diamond, a talented young girl who’s sold to the circus. VILLAGE T PEOPLE In an extract from her new book, Zena Alkayat offers an insider’s guide to Turnham Green
hough situated a little north of Chiswick’s main attractions, Turnham Green has established itself as the commercial heart of the area. To its south runs an incredibly scenic stretch of the Thames dotted with rowing clubs and pubs for walkers. Inland, Palladian villa Chiswick House attracts vast numbers of tourists, as does Hogarth’s House – the former country pad of Georgian artist William Hogarth. For Londoners, the rather upmarket Chiswick Car Boot sale operates on the first Sunday of every month from the school on Burlington Lane, and the area’s centuries-old brewing heritage means there are plenty of historic pubs to enjoy. Frustratingly, there’s little to get excited about along Chiswick High Road itself, dwarfed as it is by standard high street restaurants and chains, but offshoots Turnham Green Terrace and Devonshire Road lay claim to a stronghold of independent retailers. On Turnham Green Terrace, a number of delis have made the street a destination for fans of fine food, and Foubert’s Café (a local institution since 1980) is famous for its Italian ice cream. Devonshire Road, meanwhile, offers clothes boutiques, gift shops and the ramshackle Strand Antiques at number 46.

Eco Warrior Can sustainable fashion still be chic? Isobel Finbow talks to man on a mission Nicola Giuggioli, CEO of ethical consultancy company Eco-Age
W
hat do you think of when you hear the words ‘ecofashion’? Itchy hemp shirts, open-toed sandals and dream catchers perhaps? How about a star-studded red carpet event in Cannes? The launch of sustainability brand consultancy Eco-Age’s latest project with luxury jeweller Chopard couldn’t have been further away from the eco-hippy stereotype. With paparazzi bulbs flashing, glittering diamonds and celebrities like Marion Cotillard, Jane Fonda and Laura Bailey, Chopard presented its line of stunning sustainably sourced gold bracelets. Taking place to coincide with the A-list Cannes Film Festival, the launch formed part of Eco-Age’s Green Carpet Challenge – a bid to turn the red carpet green.
‘Luxury is a beautiful product with an incredibly high quality that stays with you for the rest of your life. It’s an investment,’ says, Nicola Giuggioli, CEO and co-founder of Eco Age. Italian Giuggioli created the company in 2008 alongside his sister Livia, wife of actor Colin Firth. Eco-Age originally started as a retail concept – a one-stop shop for everything that you need to make your life greener: furniture, building materials, technology and fabrics, but never sacrificing design. Based in Chiswick, Giuggioli found the shop attracted an informed and discerning customer. However, two years ago, the shop format was abandoned, and while the ethos of sustainability in style remained, the focus turned to corporate consultancy – advising companies on how to go green. ‘We opened this business to make the biggest impact that we possibly could and the impact that we had
on our corporate clients was vast compared to the products in the shop,’ he says. But while Giuggioli may miss the close relationships he formed with his Chiswick customers, the business-to-business expansion now allows him to work with many of the world’s most iconic luxury brands, including Alberta Ferretti, Gucci, Lanvin and Prada. The focus is on the supply chain of each product, so for the project with Chopard, the gold was sourced in partnership with the Colombia based Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), not just from established Fair Trade gold, but by investing in artisan miners to create a new supply chain. With such desirable brands all queuing up to boost their green credentials, could it be that going green has suddenly become fashionable? ‘Do we have a choice?’ asks Giuggioli. ‘There are a lot of conscious consumers who are

WORKING THE 18CT WHITE GOLD BODY OF THE BRACELET
‘Brands often don’t know where their products come from’ interested in the story behind the product especially when you talk about high end products. Their price has to be justified. Sustainability can justify these prices.’ According to the 32-year-old, it is the quality of the materials, the arts and the skills used which add to the price of a premium product, all of which are his job to communicate to the public. He believes that there should no longer be a distinction drawn between luxury and cheap products: ‘people shouldn’t even give the choice to the clients anymore. They should only supply sustainable products.’ This ethos of uniform and uncompromising sustainability becomes all the more poignant in light of the recent collapse of a building in Bangladash that had housed the factories of some of the most popular high street fashion brands in Britain, such as Primark. The disaster is reported to have killed more than 1,000 people and has highlighted the poor working conditions, low wages and shoddy safety standards that allow for super low-priced garments. According to Giuggioli, once again it comes down to a brand’s responsibility for its supply chain. ‘There are several occasions when brands don’t actually know where their stuff comes from because they are wholesalers in Asia that supply these brands, but their supply chain is completely unknown,’ he says. But specifically with this incident, he is emphatic: ‘It is a lesson that cannot be repeated in the future. We have no choice, we have to act now.’ To Giuggioli, ‘acting now’ involves the customer ‘voting against’ companies like Primark by not purchasing their products: ‘When you buy something you are voting for the things from that company. If you don’t want to vote for a company; stop buying from that company, and they will understand that they have to change something.’ Giuggioli has been making changes of his own recently, now that he no longer has his shop in Chiswick. A resident of 10 years, he has nothing but praise for its ‘villagey atmosphere’, the green spaces and the independent shops and delis. ‘I come from Italy and in Chiswick, I found the same atmosphere,’ he explains. ‘The fishmonger is a friend of mine, the greengrocer is a friend of mine, and therefore I spend time talking to them.’ Of course the other famous resident closely linked to Giuggioli is Chiswick’s own Mr Darcy, Colin Firth. Married to Livia, the driving force behind the Green Carpet Challenge, and something of an ambassador for Eco Age, the CEO concedes his name is an ‘added bonus’ for the company. But it hardly seems necessary. Of the launch in Cannes, Giuggioli admits that a bit of ‘star dust is helpful’. It’s hard to know whether he’s talking about the celebrities or the eco-friendly diamonds that adorn them eco-age.com

Catherine Hales visits Chiswick’s quirky new salon The Parlour for a funky braided do
Celebs go crazy for braiding

I
don’t very often go to the salon to get my hair styled. I go for a trim or to have it coloured, but in my mind the idea of booking an appointment to have my hair fashioned into an elaborate up-do or professionally curled is something reserved for weddings or proms. That was before I visited The Parlour, Devonshire Road’s latest addition. First off, they aren’t your average salon, as you can immediately tell by the adorable French bulldog who greets you with a grumble as you enter. The interior is airy and light with a slight fairy tale feel and Jacqueline, the owner, and Leonie, the head stylist, instantly put you at ease. I had come to try out three contemporary braid styles and, as we considered which would suit best, I was handed a delicious rose and Prosecco cocktail and a red velvet cake pop (like I said before, not your average salon). As Leonie got to work swiftly braiding my hair into a lovely plait up towards the crown of my head, we chatted about everything under the sun – never an awkward pause or stilted question – a 44

rare feat when sitting in a salon chair. The style was excellent, effortless and understated, and something I wish I could do myself (The Parlour will soon be offering classes, so maybe I will learn!). What’s most surprising is that, despite its intricacy, the braid took little more than 10 minutes to complete – barely enough time for me to quaff my cocktail. It was the perfect look for a party or night out and I didn’t feel as if I would have to walk around keeping my head very still; braids have the rare bonus of looking better as they get looser and more teased out. I was struck by the brilliance and simplicity of Jacqueline’s idea; I am completely incapable of styling my own hair, but despite envying the beautiful braided hair other girls seem to pull off so effortlessly, it wouldn’t have occurred to me to go to a salon to achieve it. It would now, but perhaps only this salon – after all, they do have cake, Prosecco and a French bulldog.

PROMOTION
Do you have the motivation to exercise this autumn? Group Wellness Manager for The Hogarth and Park Club, Terry Rodham, gives Absolutely his expert advice on getting fit for life Dear readers. Ever had those times when motivation and drive is on a downward spiral or simply not at the level you’d like it to be? Motivation is an extremely powerful tool in helping us to achieve our goals and overcome any barriers that may present themselves. This applies in all aspects of our lives. After all, it is just so easy to not to go to the gym, not to go for jog and not to take the ‘healthier’ diet option…. Motivation can come in many different forms and on many different levels. Of course, motivation can come from within, but having someone to motivate you can be a really BIG help! In an exercise class environment, having a qualified teacher who loves what they do, can be motivating in itself. They provide guidance and reassurance so you feel confident that you know what you’re doing and are thereby achieving the results and getting the reward to keep you wanting more. There is no question that when you turn up to an exercise class at the same time
every week the routine will help you to come back again and again. Having it in your diary means you don’t book that time for anyone other than yourself. Sharing that time with the same group of exercisers and teacher also makes for a pleasurable social experience, which is undoubtedly motivating. Motivation is of course a science. What motivates one person can turn another off. For some of us, going to the gym is somewhere we want one-to-one attention, whereas for others it’s actually more motivating to be given personal space. To get this balance right for each and every member is a real challenge, but it is possible. In our Hogarth and Park Clubs we use the 5 hours of personal training time every new member receives in their first month to best understand what drives and motivates them. By then providing one personal training session for every month of the membership, the relationship and trust develop and therefor so does the depth of motivation. We start by conducting a Brief
Motivational Interview (BMI). This gives us insight into the barriers a member might face that prevent them from coming to the Club and achieving their goals. Time pressures, travelling, family life and the lure of fun elsewhere are discussed. If these are planned into a realistic exercise schedule then we can help prevent the lapses in exercise and motivation that can often mean that members fall short of their exercise goals. New tools exist in leading clubs like ours, where exercise habits are programmed and tracked both within the club and outside. So if, for example, time pressures have limited a person’s exercise routine, these don’t have to result in not exercising at all. With the massive advancements in equipment technology and new communication tools available, members can be given exercise plans in and out of the club and exercise history can even be shared remotely. BUT GYMS ARE BORING... They shouldn’t be! At The Hogarth and Park Club, you have the opportunity to choose from an array of media channels and stay connected via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more from every single cardio station. Variety is the spice of life and therefore also motivating! So how about looking into a mini-triathlon, a cycle sportive, duathlons , 10Ks, half-marathons or even a marathon. We have seasonal triathlons at The Park Club which are great fun whilst being a great challenge too. Members can sign up to one of our morning boot camps where a Personal Trainers will whip them into shape - should they choose to take up this type of challenge. Then of course there is the option of joining in one of our social exercise events. This year we have a 24 Hour Charity Spine-a-athon challenge from 6pm Friday 18th October through to 6pm Saturday 19th October. This is a seriously fun cycle event for members of all fitness levels and this year The Hogarth Health Club will be donating all funds to the Russell Dawkins Charity for Spinal injuries. If you would like to know more about the Spine-athon and supporting this fundraising initiative, then please email me: terry@thehogarth.co.uk. Beyond these activities and entertainments, it is the relationships that you share with the Personal Trainers who become your mentors and friends, the class teachers and, of course, fellow members. All this combined with meeting your exercise goals that will really get you motivated. If you are feeling demotivated to exercise but eat well, don’t forget that, aside from the many health and fitness benefits, excercising can actually be FUN and REWARDING! Keep moving and stay healthy. For further info, please call The Hogarth Health Club on 020 8994 0500 or The Park Club on 020 8743 4321 thehogarth.co.uk

HEAD TRAINER MARTY YARDLEY SHARES HIS TOP TIPS ON FITNESS FOR BEGINNERS... MOTIVATION
The most effective motivation is that which is driven by enjoyment, so choose a form of exercise that you actually enjoy and look forward to, rather than one that you think will simply burn the most calories. You are far more likely to work harder if you actually enjoy the activity you choose.
VARIETY
Create a varied programme to prevent boredom. Try something new each time you train and avoid getting stuck with one routine. Not only will a varied programme make you more willing to exercise, but it will also work your body harder than if you opt for the same workout each time.

SETTING GOALS
Gemma Billington shuns the normal lazy Sunday routine for a day of REVIVAL Boot Camp
A
typical Sunday morning for me normally involves a leisurely lay-in to assess how hungover I feel and, depending upon the outcome, a comforting fry up in front of the TV. So imagine the shock to my system upon finding myself kitted out in baggy t-shirt and leggings on a bright, crisp morning in North Sheen Recreation Ground doing push-ups in the mud. Why such torture on the idlest day of the week, you may ask? Well, I’ve gallantly signed myself up for a REVIVAL Boot Camp day course, the latest offering from the REVIVAL family, who celebrated their first anniversary back in August. For such a young company, they’ve proved themselves to be a runaway success, rapidly adding new week long camps to their repertoire in Suffolk, Sussex and even Spain. The day camp offers a more manageable and affordable slice of boot camp life and attendees can sign up for the whole weekend, choose one day (10am – 4pm) or half day sessions. The majority of my fellow boot camp comrades (seven females
and two brave men) have attended several REVIVAL camps before and they faithfully sport the company’s sleek branded hoodies as proof. Head trainer Marty, a former Royal Marine Commando PTI, is the archetypal boot camp instructor: slightly resembling Vinnie Jones and dressed in tight white t-shirt and camo pants. Rather than barking demeaning slogans at us, however, he’s full of enthusiasm, encouragement and useful advise on avoiding injury and getting the most out of each workout. And boy, what a workout it is. It’s easy to spot where the REVIVAL group is meeting; Marty is setting up a playlist of adrenaline pumping music and a cluster of mats and weighted instruments await us victims. We get thrown into the deep end straight away with a series of unpleasant, classic boot camp exercises for 30 seconds. There’s squats, crunches, sit-ups, bicep curls with a weighted pole and the dreaded push-ups. After each bout of exercise we run to a pole and back, eagerly awaiting the next instruction. After a break the whole set is repeated in bouts of 20 seconds, then 10,
Set yourself short-term goals, as well as more specific long-term goals, and incorporate tangible rewards along the way. This will help to break your exercise regime up and will motivate you to continue working solidly.
including a run with the weighted bag atop our shoulders. After what seems like an eternity (I think it’s about an hour) we have a well deserved 15 minute break before realizing – aghast – that this was just the warm up. Boxercise is on the cards after the break. I’m a complete novice but, after encouragement from my fellow boot campers and advise to envisage the foam pads as my ex-boyfriend’s face, I discover that I have quite a mean uppercut. At this point the heavens open but, punching away with The Eye of the Tiger blasting in the background (seriously), it’s impossible not to be won over. In fact, the most pleasant surprise of the day is that the whole thing is hugely enjoyable and lots of fun. The following day every muscle I possess aches and my body doesn’t quite know what’s hit it, but it’s so worth it. No wonder REVIVAL has amassed such a loyal following in such a short space of time. So now there’s no excuse; sign up, get stuck in and have a laugh. It’s so worth skipping that fry up. For prices and information see revivalbootcamp.com

Why do I need an interior designer? What’s the difference between an architect and an interior designer? Can’t you cut the costs and go it alone? Andrea Pavarini kicks off his monthly column for Absolutely professing the merits of his profession
A few days ago, I was walking my dog Pluto in Richmond Park with a friend, when he started to question me about my job as an interior designer. ‘Why would anyone need one’, he wondered. My answer was straightforward: if you want to change your house into a home, create a place that makes you feel safe and protected, that almost embraces you when you are inside, well, that requires a specialist – the Interior Designer. Why is that? Why can’t I just go to a furniture shop and a bathroom store? Surely they have their own designer to help me? That is correct, but then who can make them work like a team instead of a single element? You? Well, that would be great, but unfortunately sometimes you just don’t have the technical experience to do that, nor the time to spend trying to make the team work well together. Then why shouldn’t I ask my architect friend who definitely knows more about walls and plumbing than I do? Yes, you can, but the approach from an architect’s point of view is different; he thinks about space and ergonomics, if you are lucky to find a good one that is, but he doesn’t know about you or your needs, your specific lifestyle... andreapavarini.com

he two women behind interior design company Carden Cunietti are every bit as glamorous as their combined names suggest. It is also a sense of international and subtle elegance that epitomises their portfolio of sleek London apartments and houses. New York-born Eleanora Cunietti, and Scot Audrey Carden set up their eponymous shop-cum-office space
Interior design duo Carden Cunietti take Absolutely behind the scenes of a Victorian family home in Chiswick in west London 18 years ago, but the pair didn’t exactly hit it off straight away. After crossing paths over and over again at antiques fairs, Eleanora dismissed Audrey as a ‘twee girl with braids’ and Eleanora, in turn, was branded a ‘brash American’ by Audrey. Eventually the two realised they shared a common passion for interiors and similar tastes in art, travel, antiques, fashion and photography. When Eleanora won
an early pitch for a large project, it made sense for the two to combine their talents and ideas, and so Carden Cunietti was born. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength and was this year awarded the prestigious Interior Designer of the Year 2013 award by Homes & Gardens magazine. Here, Audrey shares the inspirations and design secrets behind a beautiful Victorian family home in Chiswick.

marble from this quarry has been totally mined out and so it seems even more precious and beautiful and not something you would ever tire of.
Can you tell us about the Chiswick project, what was the brief and what kind of house is it? The house is Victorian built in 1873 and retained a lot of the original features which the clients wanted to keep. They had just undertaken the digging out of the basement to create a TV room, gym, secondary kitchen and plant room and bravely had lived through it. The basement consequently was all new and designed, and they felt that they had to bring the rest of the house up to scratch. What was the house like before you stepped in? Did the owners have a very clear idea of what they wanted beforehand? The house felt like it needed refreshing and modernising. The clients said they wanted a few modern touches and a bit of low key glamour, but also to retain the warmth of the house. We designed a couple of bathrooms, dressing room, two studies and the reception room. Each room had a lot of personality and a strong colour story and we mixed new pieces with existing pieces which we re-upholstered. The clients really enjoy fi nding antiques and have continued to add to the mix. What were the inspirations for the design? There is a lot of detail in the rooms architecturally and we reflected this
with the choice of furnishing and fabrics throughout. Our starting point in the reception room was the beautiful Fromental wallpaper with the hand embroidered cherry tree. It created a focal point opposite the fi replace and worked well with the colours of an existing rug that we re-used. The beautiful hand-painted silk wall lamps highlighted the architectural details and the original stained glass fan-light. What was your personal favourite detail in the house? My personal favourite thing is the marble in the master bathroom. The
Where do you like to source items for your projects? Did you fi nd any local gems for the Chiswick project? We source from all over the world for our projects, for example the chandelier in the dressing room is by Vennini and is hand blown in Murano, but the chandelier in the reception room was found by the clients at the Battersea antiques fair. The sofa and chairs in the reception room were by George Smith as they felt appropriate for the house. How would you describe the Carden Cunietti style and ethos? Our style is understated glamour with an emphasis on comfort and, hopefully, creating a classic, timeless environment for our clients to live in. We try to work to the client’s brief but also push them to be brave where required. We are very much a service led company and are happy to work as part of a large design team on big projects, but will take on one room re-models. carden-cunietti.com 55

Gemma Billington talks to Izzy Judd about setting up shop from her Chiswick home and becoming Mrs McFly
A
couple of years ago I was fl ickig through a copy of Hello! magazine when I stopped at an article announcing the engagement of McFly drummer Harry Judd to a pretty young musician named Izzy Johnston. It didn’t catch my attention just because I’m an avid McFly fan, but also because of his bride-to-be’s stunning flower shaped engagement ring. And now as I fi nd myself sitting in front of Mrs Judd herself, recounting this story and admiring the sparkling ring for real, I can’t help but think that life is a funny thing. We’re in Upsy Daisy cafe, Harry and Izzy’s favourite brunch spot, talking over a leisurely pot of tea. It turns out that her husband had the ring made especially for her, knowing that she
Izzy's Attic.indd 57
loved the unusual design. It’s not the fi rst time in our conversation that I tell her she’s found a real keeper. So often the significant other of a famous name fi nds themselves overshadowed by their celebrity spouse, but rather than playing down her relationship with Harry, he is never far from Izzy’s mind and she drops him into conversation regularly and without hesitation. Still clearly in the honeymoon period, the couple will be celebrating their fi rst wedding anniversary in December. Indeed, this is a year of many significant fi rsts for Izzy, following the launch of her vintage gift and homewear online store, Izzy’s Attic, back in February. ‘It’s always been a pipe dream to have a gift shop’ Izzy explains, ‘and I thought
“why not make it happen. If I’m not going to do it now when will I get to do it?”’ An established musician in her own right, Izzy started playing the violin aged five and was one of the founding members of electronic string quartet Escala, who reached the fi nal of Britain’s Got Talent in 2008. It was somewhat serendipitous that Izzy would marry a fellow musician; her brothers are all professional musicians and her parents founded a music school in Hertfordshire, where she grew up. ’When you’ve been something for so long, people don’t get it when you do something different,’ she admits on her departure from the industry. ‘But Harry gets it.’ She adds with a smile, ‘as a longterm business it’s something we can focus on. If it does develop it benefits 57

Homes & Garden
So it is with obvious and abundant enthusiasm that Izzy has stepped into the world of retail, but there’s a pragmatic business sense about her too, a sweet yet savvy businesswoman is starting to emerge. ‘You’ve got to have a passion for what you’re doing for it to be successful.’ She acknowledges. A love of buying gifts for others was the driving force behind Izzy’s Attic and every item is sourced directly by her from trade shows and antique fairs. The website is split into two halves; the one-off ‘attic’ fi nds, plus a steady catalogue of quirky, vintage style trinkets. A growing range of personalised items like aprons and cushions are proving to be the most successful lines, and stock is slowly taking over the Judd household. It’s endearing to know that each purchase is lovingly packaged and posted by Izzy herself, with a personalised note of thanks thrown in too. ‘I wanted to give the high street feel but online - where you can really get to know the customer’ Izzy explains. The retail world may be a completely new challenge for her, but Izzy is clearly relishing it and each sale is still a buzz – she can’t hide her delight when she clocks a fresh order on her phone. ‘Having 10 years of doing Escala and being with people all the time and travelling... It’s actually quite nice to wake up and be in your own home and have routine and structure.’ She says. Home for the Judds is a quirky former artists’ studio in Chiswick. The couple moved to the area when Harry was strutting his stiff in Strictly Come Dancing and they’ve swiftly become part of the local community. ‘I love just going for walks in Chiswick, you don’t feel alone,’ Izzy muses, ‘you see familiar faces along the High Road. I love the Old Cinema - obviously!’ She laughs. ‘Harry and I often go to the Hogarth too; it’s not that kind of gym that feels intimidating. They’re just so friendly.’ It’s on the subject of running that the topic of Izzy’s charity work arises. She and Harry regularly promote and fundraise for her charity, Eyes Alight, which was inspired by her

something more tatty and old, the more vintage it looks, the better it will look mixed in with all your modern bits in your home.
2. Don’t forget to try for a
bargain, there is always room for bartering!
3. If something is simply
charming to you, go with your heart and don’t think about it for too long or it will be gone.
4. I hope you don’t mind
early mornings as you need to get to vintage fairs first thing before all the best buys are snapped up!

older brother, Rupert, who was involved in a car accident in 1997. He suffered brain damage as a result and requires full-time care. The charity works with brain injury sufferers to fulfi l their individual wishes: ‘It’s personal,’ Izzy explains, ‘it’s nice for people to be given something to make them feel special and to remind them of who their characters are, rather than someone who’s just brain damaged.’ Izzy’s Attic assigns a particular item each month that will have 50% of its proceeds going directly to the charity. Talking to Izzy very quickly feels like catching up with an old friend and I feel it pertinent to ask – on the subject of all things homely and vintage – if her husband ‘gets’ it? Does Harry understand the beauty of an old Quality Street tin used for storing tea bags, or the chipped china bowl that you just can’t bear to throw away? There is the briefest of hesitations, ‘Harry has a great eye and I often ask his opinion, he’s really interested and supportive.’ She adds with a grin. I think that newlywed glow will just keep on shining. He’s a keeper alright. izzysattic.com

Kate’s tip of the month
November can be chilly and make gardening feel more of a chore than a pleasure, but there are still plenty of jobs to be done. Securing any trellis or canes used for climbing plants is one such important job to avoid damage to delicate plants if harsh winds batter the structures. Once you have done that, mound up the soil around the bases of hardy fuchsias and roses to protect from the oncoming frosts. kategouldgardens.com

L A NEW CRAFT BEER THAT’S CREATING A BUZZ IN LONDON
Inspired by the much publicised plight of the bumblebee, plus the growing number of ‘urban’ beekeepers in central London, 30-year-old former marketing manager Hannah Rhodes has just launched honey craft beer Hiver, available at Real Ale Twickenham and a small selection of pubs and retailers across the city. ‘Honey and beer is a combination that goes back a long time and I’d love to revive this beer style through Hiver,’ said Hannah, ‘so I’m thrilled to be working with independent beekeepers and offering a craft blonde as the fresh face of honey beer.’ hiverbeers.com

eaving London is a precarious business. You turn your back for five minutes and suddenly you’re completely out of the loop with what’s going on. In this ever-evolving city, it’s the turn of artisan producers and independents to have their day in the sun. But I’m not talking about homemade chutneys produced lovingly from local allotments; this year marks the rise of the home brew. Craft beer and microbreweries are cropping up everywhere; from the myriad local brewers of Shoreditch to the Sipsmith boys distilling gin in a Hammersmith garage – independents are officially ‘in’. But November sees the launch of something a little different; London’s first ever winery. Based in a former gin distillery in West Brompton, London Cru is the capital’s first boutique winery, with grapes sourced from some of France’s top producers and shipped to the UK within 36 hours. Upon arrival at the site, which is easy to spot via a patchwork, multi-coloured wine logo, London Cru founder Gavin Monery is keeping a group of journalists entertained. This is the media’s sneak peek of the winery, and heavy duty machinery and barrels are in full swig, sorry swing. ‘We realise that this is going to be a challenge’ Gavin admits of the launch, ‘but
we have all of the tools, skills and experience to make top quality wines in an urban environment. We also have the freedom to create the styles we want without the rules that apply to so many wine regions.’ London Cru is being backed by Roberson wine founder Cliff Roberson and investor Will Tomlinson. The idea started life (as all the best ideas do) as a discussion in the pub across the road one evening. Australian native Gavin, who has previously worked with top wineries including Moss Wood and Jean-Louis Chave, has grand ideas for London Cru and markets it as a totally unique institution. Though the business officially launches in November, the exclusive London Cru wine will not be available until the middle of next year. In the meantime, the team will be busy hosting a series of innovative events, tours and tasting evenings. The space will also be available to hire for one-off events. ‘We wanted to demystify the wine process and make it more tactile.’ Gavin explains, ‘with so many talented people creating world-class craft beers and spirits in London, we thought it was a great time to do the same with wine and share the experience of making it with people who want a hands-on, informative and entertaining experience.’ londoncru.co.uk

pretty basic, and then the Directors Dining Room upstairs - they got top whack cooking. When I was promoted up there, that was where it all began.
Why did you get into cooking? I studied microbiology at university and I started cooking to feed myself. I knew almost immediately that I’d found something that was destined to be my ‘reason for being’.
Then you worked at Marco Pierre White’s Harveys. How did that happen? I went and had dinner there and thought “Actually this is where I have to be.” I conned my way into the kitchen and worked there for a while. An extraordinary experience.
Did you think your cooking was particularly good? I don’t think that came until later on, when I started working professionally in my first job with the Roux brothers.
What do you mean ‘conned’?! I hadn’t had much experience but the turnover of staff was high [laughs]. So there wasn’t a queue at the door. But Marco gave me a job, that’s all that matters. There, I really learned about what is achievable with limited resources, and also about phenomenal contemporary French cooking.
First, you headed to Australia… Yes, I travelled there for a bit and started out working in a restaurant in Sydney. I was a waiter, which was my first proper pressurised experience. Living in Oz, you must now be a pro at barbeques… [Laughs] I’m not bad. I do it properly – the proper man thing: make fire. You then worked with the Roux brothers in their ‘contract catering arm’. What did that entail? They had a huge empire in those days and they held a catering division in all sorts of institutions, city banks for example. I was part of the team that produced all the food for Kleinwort Benson. What was that like? It was a slightly false environment, not the same as it is in a fully-fledged restaurant. But at the end of the day it was still cooking. There were various levels of food produced, such as in the basement for the general staff, which was very simple and 68

“Barnes is one of the last genuine villages in London.”
Next up, Bibendum with Simon Hopkinson. Yes, that was a completely difference experience. It wasn’t about how shiny the saucepans were or the shape of the carrots. It was about provenance, seasonality, flavour and honesty. And that was probably the single most important stretch of cooking I did. Your style is ‘modern progressive French’ – oui? Yes, it’s very quietly progressive, in the sense that I cook classic combinations of flavours, with a modern approach. I’m not one of those people trying to recreate the wheel. I have a firm belief that the flavours most edgy cooks 68

tend to see as ‘old fashioned’ are the ones that came from generations of cooking, so I stick absolutely to those. But obviously the cooking techniques and presentation is much more contemporary. Your restaurant The Square has two Michelin stars – are they easy to maintain? It comes down to consistency, and consistency is achieved through having a fantastic team and having a balanced life. As much as I love what I do (and I still run around in the kitchen, cooking my heart out) I make sure that I take plenty of holiday and get out in the afternoons. I’m not one of those people who just lives for their kitchen; I can’t be enthusiastic if I do nothing but cook. But you’ve got so many kitchens... There is only one kitchen where I cook – other than home – and it’s The Square. Obviously I have other interests, but they require different things from me. Brett Graham at The Ledbury, for instance – I don’t have to tell him how to cook anymore (not that I ever did). With each business, once you’ve got the right people there, they stay consistent. You live in Barnes. What do you like about the area? When you spend your working life in a stainless steel, noisy, smelly greasy environment, it’s very nice to live somewhere where there is some green and some space; a quiet, lovely quality environment. Barnes, without a shadow of a doubt, is one of the last genuine villages in London. It has a pond, a pub, a fishmonger, a butcher, a church and the necessary components that constitutes a village. It retains a sense of that village life, which is really lovely. Onto telly. In 2012 you won the fish course for BBC’s Great British Menu, and this year, you judged the northwest heat. How did feel being on the other side of the pass? It was a whole lot easier than cooking that’s for sure! Having
done it, you’re very aware of actually how difficult it is. But as far I am concerned, it’s a food competition. And whatever brief you might want to impose, the food must be delicious. Will you do it again if you’re asked? I would love to go on there and cook again, but to be quite honest, you step into that arena and there ain’t no guarantee you’re going to be successful. I managed to come out with my reputation and pride in tact. I don’t intend to go in there and risk it again. There are a lot of great cooks but most of them are establishing their reputations. I’ve been rattling around for a long time... You’re not that old! I’ve been at The Square for 22 years. That’s quite along time. And I have a reputation. Those programmes, they’re making TV, not safeguarding my reputation, which I fully understand. But I’m not going to risk it again [laughs]. Fair enough. Moving on…You are marooned on a desert island with one ingredient and one cooking utensil. Name them. Good God! I don’t know! The one ingredient I couldn’t possibly live without is an onion – it’s the basis and background of virtually all French cooking processes. And if I had to cook my onion in any way, it would be in a frying pan. Finally, what’s up next for 2013? Keeping The Square relevant moving forward, making sure it stays full and in demand for the next decade. On the other end of the spectrum, I’m trying to maximise the success at [new venture] Sonny’s Kitchen in Barnes. But I really want to try to keep my life simpler than I have for the last few years, so I can focus on those two things. THE HOTEL
Once described as the ‘Riviera of the Highlands’, this world-famous French chateau-style hotel has been synonymous with golf for years, with its three championship courses hosting countless competitions. Yet Gleneagles is about far more than just golf. Set within 850 acres of rolling Perthshire countryside, there’s country pursuits galore – think shooting, falconry, fishing and wildlife photography – as well as an eponymous train station, an awardwinning spa and a two Michelin-star restaurant. And for the kids? A spy school, bug hunting and junior off-road driving to name just a few of the familyfriendly activites. Bring the dog too – they even offer training classes.
GLENEAGLES HOTEL PERTHSHIRE, SCOTLAND THE SPA
Featuring the ESPA Life programme, this is a place where every issue is tackled – depression, IBS, bad back, low confidence… It’s all about taking a holistic approach here, combining treatments with personal training and nutritional advice to come up with a solution in seconds – we recommend the fantastic acupuncture with Ailsa. In addition, there’s a 20-metre swimming pool, Jacuzzi, outdoor hot pool, gym and aerobics studio so that you can work those muscles before a relaxing massage.
THE ROOM
Fresh from a £1million revamp, there are 232 rooms, including 26 sumptuous suites. The look is classic and comfortable, with original Art Deco features, Zoffany furniture and thick carpets with underfloor heating. Asprey products pepper the massive marble bathroom, which boasts an elegant claw foot bath. Choose a room in the 60-to-90 block series – spacious with excellent views.

THE FOOD
There are four places to eat, catering to every whim: the Mediterranean-style Deseo (great for little ones with its option of customising your own pizza), classic bar food in the Dormy House or the award-winning Strathearn, known for its excellent breakfasts – think Marburry salmon from Dumfries, Loch Fyne kippers, stone-baked breads, three different choices of Ayrshire bacon and the obligatory haggis. However, the main attraction is the two-Michelin starred ‘Restaurant Andrew Farlie’. Serving a blend of Scottish and French cuisine, the signature smoked lobster with warm lime and herb butter is not to be missed.

Navigating the high seas in the care of Crystal Cruises could not be more spoiling, argues a thoroughly indulged Imogen Thornton
DUBROVNIK

t’s 5.30pm, and the doorbell sounds. The interruption – albeit only of activities so ludicrously lacking in industry such as lounging indulgently on the balcony – is not an unwelcome one; after all, the sing-song chime heralds the arrival of Vicente at the precise hour at which he had been summoned. He may be dressed to the bow-tied nines in comparison to our lazy flip-flops and semi beachwear and in every way our sartorial superior, yet he is here to deferentially proffer a bottle of Billecart-Salmon along with a helping of bruschetta to whet our appetites for the dinner we shall eventually wend our way to. Anachronistic as it may be, Vicente’s sole role as our appointed butler is to play Jeeves to our Bertie Worcester and for his part, he assumes it with discrete aplomb, while we are quite happy to capitulate to near total helplessness. We are, after all, aboard the Crystal Serenity, the absurdly stylish and luxurious cruise liner we boarded at Barcelona and that will – trustily – deliver us eventually to Venice via breathtaking stops at Mallorca, the Amalfi coast, Sicily, Corfu and Dubrovnik. But then, Vicente is emblematic of the whole; every detail, from the very sewn-up and smooth act of boarding at Barcelona’s port, is served up with an attention to detail that makes every penny of the all-inclusive fare worth it. Let’s start with the room – or, as its known on-board – the stateroom (an appealingly grand moniker I shall pompously adopt hence-forward). The first thing to note is the large double balcony – with a view across the wide seas and downwards towards the promenade deck. It is the perfect spot upon which to enjoy a nightly sundowner, and indeed, never has the term been more appropriate; to watch the molten fiery orange of the sun melt gradually in to the sea and make the water picturesquely sparkle in the dying light is something incomparably spectacular. Back inside, the enormous bed – for which guests can select from a pillow menu – is amongst the most sizeable and comfortable we’ve ever slept in, while the bathroom, complete with Jacuzzi bath, would hold its own in any contest against the best landdwelling five-star hotels. The service, meanwhile, far exceeds that in any comparable on-land offering; each day the room is cleaned twice by a team of thoroughly charming staff and each evening Vicente leaves us little 73

Food & Travel morsels and treats (smoked salmon here, proscuitto there), as well as Tanqueray gin and tonics to reward us for our exertions poolside or exploring whatever beautiful town we’ve been fortunate enough to be delivered to that particular day. And then there’s the food, which is abundant and invariable only in its excellence. We begin our voyage from the vantage point of the Crystal dining room, where, on night one, we’re allocated a regular table with regular waiters – this time a double act of Arlena and Fabio, who are as efficient as they are charming. The sweeping grandeur of the room represents a tip of the cap to cruiseliners of old, the chandeliers and scale alone satisfying any hankering for the golden age of travel. The menu meanwhile is daily-changing with interesting twists on modern classics aplenty, plus here you will find healthy concessions for those who have not quite yielded to the idea of total gluttony (there is, though, a gym on board for the partial assuaging of guilt). The Crystal dining room is where the grand majority of our 1,000 fellow sailors repair most nights post early evening drinks (taken either on the balcony or in any number of bars on-board), but there are also speciality restaurants such as the Italian Prego and, most spectacularly, The Silk Road, an outpost of the much-lauded Nobu; its Michelinstar quality is in abundant evidence and the black cod is, I’m pleased to report, every bit as jaw-slackeningly delicious as it is in Mayfair. To spend eight days aboard The Crystal Serenity, alighting at a collection of fascinating ports on an Odyssean voyage (with conspicuously fewer instances of shipwreck and abject misery, it must be noted), should come with its own danger warning – namely that any traveller must, in all fairness, be made aware of the thoroughly spoiling effect it will exert on them hence forth. The pools, the on-board library, the seamless service (with a notable nod to Benjamin for whom it is a matter of pride that no pool-side drink should be allowed to be empty for more than a matter of seconds), the wonderfully nostalgic promenade deck, the on-board cinema, the plethora of bars – from the breezy to the gentleman’s club-like – and, yes, the services of Vicente all add up to a picture of sublime ease and comfort. At no point, despite the vast number of fellow travellers, does it feel crowded and the diversions available are so
wide-ranging that after eight days we’ve barely skimmed the surface; for those wanting the pizzazz of entertainment, it’s to be had nightly (expect ballroom dance, show tunes and, er, ventriloquism); for flutterers, there is a casino; if you could possibly be in need of further relaxation, there is a spa; and for the committed selfimprovers amongst us there is a lecture programme and lessons in everything from photography to languages. It is, then, no wonder that as the Crystal Serenity pulls out of every port, the gruff yet affecting tones of Louis Armstrong are belted out throughout the ship as he croons about what a wonderful world it is. Louis, we’d be inclined to agree.

You may know us from walking your dog, local charity events or simply recognise a familiar face. Because many of our agents live where they work, they really understand what matters to buyers and sellers there. And because people know us, time and again we are able to sell and let properties more quickly and more profitably than anyone else.

Property I’d most like on my books and why? Walpole house, Chiswick Mall. It’s Chiswick’s most expensive property and was sold for £12.5m in 2008, the house was designed by Cath Kidston and Jasper Conran. Best place to invest? The Glebe estate; we have just sold a house for 10% over the asking price, we were amazed by the level of demand and interest in this lovely 4 bedroom cottage.
CANTELL & CO LAUNCH IN RICHMOND
The most interesting property I have been involved in is : We have a three bedroom flat situated on top of La Trompette, the owner of the flat gets his food delivered directly to his kitchen table... a perfect owner occupier and/ or rental investment. Finest property showcase: Grove Park Gardens. This is a stunning 6 bedroom, 5 reception room house on this lovely street, the house is circa 3300 sq ft and further benefits from off street parking and a 64 foot rear garden.

The Richmond community gathered in The Alberts to celebrate the launch of David & Anissa’s new estate agency. The husband and wife team live in Richmond and have been dealing with all aspects of selling and letting property across SW London for a combined 18 years. “We understand the stresses of property transactions and offer a unique, bespoke service; an alternative to the big-brand model.” says David. “It’s the little things that matter,” says Anissa. “We listen, we know the area and always give an honest opinion. Most importantly, we get results.” The launch was very well attended and David & Anissa were bowled over by the level of local support and good wishes.
superbly and helped create a wonderful afternoon and evening” commented Andrew Nunn. “Helping to raise money for such a good cause, in such a fun way, will always be something we want to be involved with, and
groveSTOCK being a local event really does bring the community together” Performers included Taxi Joe, Rogue 5 and The Fat Chance Band, and throughout the day people were charmed and entertained by the wit of Star stand-up compare Patrick Monahan. Held in the heart of Grove Park in the Vicarage Gardens at the corner of Hartington Road and Grove Park Road, groveSTOCK is about having a great time, listening to some live music and enjoying the atmosphere of a great little music festival. All in all, a significant amount of money was raised for the not for profit organisation “Soldiering On” who in turn support injured Armed Forces personnel and their families.

A NEW LOOK FOR BECTIVE LESLIE MARSH
Narendra Ghandi Partner, Winkworth
1. Why this area? We have been established in the locality for over 20 years and being situated next to a tube station certainly helps! More recently, the talk in Ealing and Acton is of the prospect of Crossrail and the increasing speculation on how this will impact on the area. 2. What is your company ethos? How do you translate that into giving the best customer service? Our company ethos, or indeed mission statement is, ‘always give the best advice’. What this means is that we do not always win the business when giving ‘the best advice’, but clients genuinely appreciate and respect our honesty to the extent they recommend us to other potential clients.
S
tanding still is not an option” according to Peter Rickenberg, Managing Director at Bective Leslie Marsh estate agents, who have just launched a whole new look in time for the autumn rush. “We wanted to create a fresh, stylish and artistic look to complement the company’s bespoke attitude and service. We believe there is a huge market for customers who want individual attention and service, and we have the expertise and most importantly the motivation to meet our client’s expectations.”
‘‘
3. What properties are you most excited about having on your books? In Ealing and Acton we have created a niche market for ourselves by specializing in the mid to upper end as well as the quality flat market, and indeed the more quirky properties.
Bective’s new look has a distinct and artistic feel which draws inspiration from many landmarks within central London. Renowned illustrator, Rebecca Lea Williams, worked with design agency Both Associates to create a London map that seeks to highlight much of the areas heritage and history in a series of drawings covering the capital’s most loved neighbourhoods. Peter comments further “we love the areas in which we work and our new branding shows a deep emotional connection and total understanding of the local environment. This knowledge, expertise and motivation is what makes us stand out from the crowd”.
4. What do you predict for the property market for 2013/14? The market remains strong, despite the slowdown over July and August as expected. It clearly is a seller’s market and I do not see this changing for the foreseeable future, given the poor returns being offered outside of the housing market. 020 8896 0123; winkworth.co.uk

Chiswick is perhaps best known for being the finishing point of the world famous Oxford Cambridge boat race. With impressive architecture and charming tree-lined streets, it is one of West London’s most popular and prosperous areas. At its heart, Chiswick High Road is lined with gastro pubs, cafes, bars, independent shops and high street stores. In fact, it has a reputation for being a food lovers’ paradise and has a Michelin starred restaurant, Hedone. Away from the high street, Chiswick Transport links: • Chiswick train station (zone 3) • Chiswick Park tube station (zone 3)
offers several Conservation Areas, parks, the tranquil riverside Thames Path and the Grade II listed Chiswick House and Gardens. The name ‘Chiswick’ means ‘Cheese Fair’ and it is thought that there was an annual cheese fair on Dukes Meadows up until the eighteenth century. Interesting Fact : Chiswick has its own Lifeboat station which is one of only four along the River Thames.

he Chiswick property market remains buoyant and we have seen prices rise as a result of the continuing shortage of stock. It is worth noting that Prime Central London has seen record high property prices achieved over the course of the last year, driven predominantly by overseas investors seeking a ‘safe haven’ for their cash. The result now, however, is that the greatest growth is in the surrounding areas as people move from central London, trading a similar priced property for a much larger home. John D Wood & Co.’s latest indices show values are up as much as 40% in Primrose Hill, 36% in Battersea and 28% in Wandsworth, especially up to the £2,000,000 Stamp Duty Land Tax threshold, and we have been experiencing a similar ‘ripple –out’ effect here in Chiswick over the past few years. Across the company we are achieving offers in excess of the guide price and sealed bids are commonplace, both signs of a buoyant property market where the best properties attract competing offers. Savvy property owners, who have always thought of moving to the country are doing so, capitalising on these high prices and house hunting whilst there is still considerable value to be found.

inleigh Folkard & Hayward is pleased to announce the addition of three new services which will join already established branches in West London. The existing Chiswick sales branch has relocated to new premises on Chiswick High Road, and has expanded to include a dedicated lettings offering which will be overseen by Lettings Manager, Christopher Clark. Chris’s previous roles have seen him work across the South West London property market and he brings over eight years’ experience to the role. In a similar vein, the established

est London Property Professionals Orchards of London just opened their new third office on Acton High Road. The event proceedings were opened by the mayor of Ealing, Kamaljit Dhindsa, who presented Paul Connolly and Joseph Murphy with a plaque to declare the office’s official opening. Since starting the business in 2009, Paul Connolly and Joseph Murphy were pleased to see the expansion of their company. Mark Carroll, Acton Lettings Manager notes: “We have only been open for a few days in Acton and already have valuation requests are coming through. The Acton lettings market has picked up a great deal and I believe it will continue to grow at a steady pace.”

ollowing on from the exceptional sales success, only a handful of luxury apartments remain at the exclusive St Peters Place development in West London. Designed to reflect the perennially popular Georgian façades of St Peters Square, St Peters Place blends gracefully into its locale, combining the best of classical architecture with the finest of contemporary materials. Internally, each apartment is characterised by traditional Georgian elegance, with the finest attention to detail and the highest of specifications. Each apartment enjoys access to private outdoor space, with either a terrace or balcony, the landscaped courtyard gardens and exceptional communal roof terrace provide residents with the ultimate sanctuary in which to relax away from the pace of London living. Furthermore, each apartment comes complete with underground parking, offering greater convenience for residents. Julia Reynolds, Sales & Marketing Director for Crest Nicholson London, comments: “The exceptional success at St Peters Place demonstrates the demand for luxury developments in W6. There are a limited number of apartments still available, so we urge prospective purchasers to lodge their

With living accommodation arranged across five floors, each property will benefit from stunning features such as a courtyard extending from the lower ground floor family room, a kitchen / dining room that opens out onto a terrace, three en-suite bathrooms and a fifth floor suite.
nyone living in Shepherd’s Bush 20 years ago would be amazed to see the changes that have taken place since. They might even notice that Kerr & Co is celebrating their 20 year anniversary with a range of eye-catching initiatives. Having expanded our prominent corner premises in Goldhawk Road, we are continuing to sponsor the cricket team, rugby club and many other local fairs and events. We recently commissioned a special Birthday Cake to celebrate our 20 years and had a ‘guess the weight’ competition at Brackenbury Fair. We also plan for staff to cycle to appointments in hi-viz jackets! A sight unheard of 20 years ago...

IN THEIR OWN
WORDS STEPHEN HARDY Sales Manager; Sworn & Co Photography: Rebecca Noonan
A
s everyone knows, we estate agents do like to use a cliché or two. Personally, my favourite is “Going the extra mile” or, to be more accurate, the extra 26.2 miles. Finally, after a number of years thinking I should run, I have signed up to the 2014 Virgin London Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 13th April. The training has already started, although the first run only lasted about 200 metres before I thought ‘What have I done?’. It’s only going to get wetter, colder and darker as the nights draw in, but I am running for a good cause and one that’s close to my heart. Leukaemia Care devote their energy to providing vital care and support to all those whose lives have been affected by blood or lymphatic cancer. Their work extends to the welfare of families and carers, as well as that of the patients themselves. I specifically chose them as they were a great source of information to our family during my own mum’s four year battle, which she sadly lost in March 2012. Whilst many people donate to the research charities, I prefer to think that the funds I raise will have a direct benefit to those battling the disease now. As an estate agent, I am lucky to have a platform such as Absolutely to advertise my fundraising efforts. I joined Sworn & Co almost two years ago, and was charged with delivering a sales department that could match the professionalism and long term reputation of our Survey and Estate Management
departments. By and large, the two years have gone as well as could have been hoped for; we have built the branch steadily, investing in a new website and LED window displays and improving the quality and volume of our advertising and property details, receiving excellent feed back along the way. While I remember, I must say a big thank you to all those past and current vendors and buyers who have donated to my fundraising already. I believe it really does benefit all our clients, new and existing, that we can offer all our services under one roof at 194 Chiswick High Road. It has helped us to achieve a record of no house or flat sale falling through in Chiswick since May last year. The access to such a large source of expertise has helped, as has the number of local professionals we have been able to recommend such as solicitors, mortgage brokers, and other surveyors (where we had a conflict of interest), builders, architects and many others. None who are directly or indirectly affiliated to Sworn & Co and many of which, if not all, came recommended by clients. The rest of 2013, and the first half of 2014, promise to be challenging. I have set myself a stiff target for fundraising, but with the kind support of Sworn and Co, who have agreed to donate a percentage of our sales fees to my fundraising efforts, I hope to beat it. Finally to those friends, family and colleagues who laughed when I said I was running, dust off your wallets as it’s going to cost you! 020 8995 3076; swornandco.com uk.virginmoneygiving.com/stevehardy

Ask the Lettings Experts Our panel of professionals give you the edge in the property market
T
he most obvious reasons people ask us to manage their properties is that they live abroad or outside of London and want to create a harmonious tenancy for both themselves and their tenants. This is becoming even more pertinent as a growing number of our international applicants will not take properties that do not have a UK based management agent. Our property management team, run by Andrew and Abby, is based in-house which means they can react quickly and effectively to any emergencies, using our trusted group of contractors. Andrew also handles the legal side of the equation, liaising on our landlords’ behalf on insurance claims, new legislations and financial and legal issues that might arise in the course of a tenancy.
4
Rental yield vs capital growth?
R
ental yields in Brook Green are healthy and in some cases are rivaling those achieved in Prime Central London. However, while property prices are on an upward curve, the primary focus for investors is the capital growth. Securing a long term tenancy, with a rental review built in, puts the landlord in the best possible position.

R
Who is renting in the area?
ichmond is an extremely popular place to live, habitants range from single professionals commuting into London, to professional couples, families and both small and larger corporate clients. With an easy commute into central London, close proximity to excellent schools and beautiful surroundings, including Richmond Park and the River Thames, properties to let in Richmond are rarely on the market for long. Due to the popularity of the area, we are always looking for more stock, as properties tend to be let almost as soon as they come onto the market.
“
A growing number of international applicants will not take properties that do not have a UK based management agent.

3 I
How to attract the best tenants?
t is really important that you consider how your property is presented. Of course, the right rental figures is important and you should not over price your property as it will not let. However, look at the condition of the property- what is the kerb appeal, is the outside clean and tidy, is the paintwork looking good, is the garden tidy, does the fence need repairing? Many people drive pass properties before looking inside them so make sure your presentation outside and inside is of the highest standard. At Fitz-Gibbon we are very aware of this and can help you prepare your property before it comes to the market.
“
1
Why should I use a property management agent?
Best buy to let investments
he best buy to let investments tend to be a property that you can add instant value to, be it an extension, refurbishment, marriage or sub division. Aside from this, the old adage “The three most important things to look for are Location, Location, Location” hold true. A well located property will attract a premium rental figure, will have minimum void periods between tenants and have opimum capital appreciation.

Lettings Advice Landlord Responsibilities
T
he landlord is responsible for ensuring the property is in as good a condition as possible prior to, and during the tenancy. They must make sure the property is safe and adheres to electrical, fire and PAT regulations. If the property is not managed, the landlord must be available, approachable and efficient in fixing any problems for the tenants. From a small leak in the bathroom, to changing the locks, as a landlord this is your responsibility. If you are considering letting your home and you know you will be unable to respond quickly to tenant enquiries and maintain the standards of their home, always opt for a managing agent. The property manager will oversee any routine maintenance prior to and throughout the tenancy and will have a dedicated base of qualified and reliable contractors. He/ she is responsible for everything from releasing deposits and paying bills, to spare keys and pest control. Having a personally appointed property manager makes your property more attractive to prospective tenants and 80% are likely to renew their contracts at least once. This enables the landlord to prevent a long void period between tenancies and ensures consistency in their rental incomes.

Prime Purchase Vendor Advice
Valuations How do you decide how much a property is worth? At Orchards of London we base our valuations on local knowledge we have developed from previous property valuations. We also use comparative data from both the Land Registry and RightMove. However, we believe every home is individual, with its own unique selling points that affect an accurate forecast level of its value. Who decides? We provide the vendor with professional advice in order to find a realistic, achievable value in prevailing market conditions. We also create a recommended market price which is always set jointly between us and the seller. What happens if I think my house is worth more than you have valued it for? We are one of the most pro-active and ambitious agents in London, renowned for continually setting the best prices on the streets in Acton, Chiswick and Ealing. If you feel your property is worth more, we will work with you to devise a marketing strategy to achieve your valuation. What happens if you over value it? We continually measure the number of enquiries a property recieves via email, newspaper and telephone. Experience tells us that if a property is priced too high, generally the number of enquiries are not at the level we would usually expect to achieve. Our goal is to get the best price for your home; if your price is not getting you the right level of intrest we would adjust our marketing strategy for you, in order to gain a higher level of enquiries, and therefore increasing viewing activity and firm offers.
