During menopause, lower levels of estrogen have a big impact on your skin. Less estrogen makes you prone to thinning, sagging, and wrinkling. Skin looses elasticity making open pores much more visible. Skin is also much less hydrated. Fortunately, you can relieve some of the skin-related effects of aging by taking care of your specific skin care needs using the Dr Nyla skincare collection.

Yorkshire YATTER

Who needs New York, says Lisa Byrne, when the finest in fashion happen to reside in our county

London, Paris, Milan and… Yorkshire? Well before you fashion bunnies choke on your fizz, no, it’s not a typo as Old York is giving New York a run(way) for its money in the style stakes. The Big Apple is so last year compared with the flourishing talent coming out of our elegant county. You can keep your Macy’s and Saks as we have Fenwick, Hoopers and Browns!

In fact, one of the biggest designers in the world, Matty Bovan – who has won the coveted Karl Lagerfeld Award for Innovation – works from his own studio in York in the uber glam location of a, ahem, garage. Which led to fashion bible Vogue to comment, ‘How amazing to think that this tatty grandeur – wonky crinolines, balloon headdresses, and all – should have come out of a tatty suburban garage in York.’

Nicholas Alistair Walsh – one half of the duo behind the Alistair James label –hails from Sowerby Bridge, and he credits the beautiful landscape for inspiring

his work. Nicholas proudly states that a Swarovski-embellished top, worn by Kylie Minogue and Paloma Faith, was inspired by the heather and brambles found on Norland Moor. “For me, it’s always been a romantic idea,” he says. “The Yorkshire moors, its peaks and valleys, the old textile mills that dot the countryside.”

My strangest fashion experience as a national magazine editor was when I visited New York to cover the VH1/Vogue fashion show party, dressed top to toe in America’s answer to Primark. I was at the most glamorous fashion event on the globe clad in a cheap frock from Century 21, as my luggage, containing a glorious designer gown, had been lost in transit.

On a very tiny budget, I had minutes to grab something from a store near my hotel, and I purchased a black, floor-length flannel dress for $10. Wearing grey scu ed trainers, I took my place on the red carpet at Madison Square Garden to interview a galaxy of stars including Madonna and Jennifer Lopez.

One fellow journalist, who resembled an extra from Zoolander, turned to me and screeched, ‘Oh my gawd, your Prada dress is divine, I love Prada!’ I immediately wiped the smile o his face by naming the thrift shop emporium that had produced this rag.

This September, I will be relishing taking my place on the front row at York Fashion Week, the brainchild of entrepreneurs Nicky Hayer and Mark Bewick, to showcase the county’s young designers. And perhaps, on this occasion, I shall be clad head to toe in authentic Prada looking Absolutely Yorkshire Fabulous! Mwah Mwah.

My highlights for the month of September…

Getting my power suit dry cleaned in preparation for Dame Joan Collins Behind the Shoulder Pads show at York’s Grand Opera House Indulging in a delicious brunch at The Ivy Harrogate before visiting the town’s Autumn Flower Show at Newby Hall.

Cooking hearty soups using fresh vegetables from The Greengrocer of Acomb, which puts Fortnum and Mason’s foodhall to shame.

“My mother used to call me Miss Perpetual Motion”

Stories to TELL

There is no one on this planet quite like Dame Joan Collins. She possesses old school Hollywood glamour, appears ageless and retains a razor-sharp wit. After over 80 years in the business, many would expect the award-winning star to enjoy the fruits of her hard work by relaxing in some uber glam location – but not Joan. She is instead dusting o her shoulder pads, putting on the glitz and taking part in a nationwide tour of her new show – and it promises to be epic.

As Joan herself says in an exclusive interview with Absolutely Yorkshire magazine: “I’ve had many amazing adventures in my life. Some stories though, I have only ever shared with my friends… Until now!”

Q Dame Joan, you are appearing at the historic York Grand Opera House on 2 October as part of your Behind The Shoulder Pads tour. What will your much-anticipated latest tour be about?

A I have so many fascinating tales that I tell my friends, and now I have decided

to share them with you. I also reflect on more recent events that I haven’t spoken about before. It’s a mixture of old and new stories which are all very entertaining.

Q Where do you get your incredible energy and joie de vivre from?

A My mother used to call me ‘Miss Perpetual Motion’ – I think I was born with it.

Q You’ve visited our county on several occasions. What are your best memories of being in Yorkshire?

A I absolutely love the North Yorkshire moors, as it makes me think of Cathy and Heathcli from Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, wandering around haunting the landscape. And I’ve always loved York’s Grand Opera House – it’s a marvellous theatre brimming with history. Also, Yorkshire’s close to Cumbria where I’ve made the most magical memories. I celebrated a memorable birthday there where my husband gave me one of my favourite gifts – a heart shaped pendant with P loves J inside and an arrow running through it.

Q York is reputed to be one of the most haunted cities in the world. Have you ever had a ghostly experience, and do you believe in the afterlife?

A I did stay at a palazzo in Venice, which was incredibly haunted. The ghostly presence made itself known the entire time and many strange things happened. That experience certainly made me reconsider the afterlife!

Q You’ve met everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Grace Kelly. Who do you think possessed the most otherworldly beauty and charisma from that golden era?

A There’s no question, it is absolutely Marilyn Monroe. Not only was she gorgeous, but Marilyn was an amazing actress who was hugely underrated. Her star quality oozed charisma and sexiness.

Q Do you think any modernday actresses have such elegance and beauty?

A Sadly, it’s not the fashion anymore, but I do think Margot Robbie is a natural beauty.

As Dame Joan Collins heads to Yorkshire with her new show, Absolutely exclusively sits down with her to talk county favourites, worst kissers and royal occasions
CULTURE • INTERVIEW

Q Who was the worst actor you ever kissed?

A No question, it was Gene Barry [American actor Gene starred with Joan in 1968 film Subterfuge].

Q You married dashing Percy Gibson at Claridge’s in 2002. What keeps your long-lasting marriage so alive?

A Well, we started o as friends, and I do think that helped a lot as we already admired and respected each other. It’s quite remarkable how well things have gone because we spend 24/7 with each other, but giving each other space has been very beneficial. It’s the collaboration of our work and life balance that has been so positive.

Q You lost your incredible sister Jackie in 2015 to breast cancer. How have you coped with the loss?

A I can’t answer this in one simple sentence as it’s utterly devastating. One doesn’t ‘cope’ or ‘get over’ something like that. One just learns to live with it.

Q You’ve met many members of the Royal Family. What are your memories of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II?

A One of my fondest memories took place at Buckingham Palace in 2014. I was invited to see a performance of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion given by RADA students to mark 60 years of the monarch's patronage of the drama school. After the show the Queen walked around the room greeting and chatting to many celebrity guests. She was holding a glass in her hand, but whether it was wine or water I didn’t dare ask. When she came to me, she mentioned having bestowed my OBE in 1997, which I told her was the biggest highlight of my life after having given birth to my children, and we talked about the show. The Queen was incredibly

knowledgeable about the play and its adaptation to My Fair Lady in the 1950s.

Q If you were stuck in a lift with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, what would you say to her?

A I rarely take lifts – terrible claustrophobia.

Q Yorkshire has produced a huge range of incredible actors, from Sir Patrick Stewart, Dame Judi Dench, Dominic West, and Sean Bean, do you have a favourite?

A All of them are wonderful actors.

Q What’s your most treasured outfit by the late, great Nolan Miller?

A Sadly, I do not have any outfits left from Nolan, but my favourite was the too-lowcut metallic lamé gown that I wore at the Night of 100 Stars in New York City in 1982.

Q Due to your iconic role as Alexis Colby in Dynasty, everyone believes you love Champagne, but this isn’t true. What is your perfect drink?

A A fine white Sancerre or a very dry martini with ‘no groceries’!

John Whaite

THE GBBO WINNER AND STRICTLY STAR ON FILMING IN LEEDS, STARRING IN BRADFORD’S PANTO AND HIS NEW TELL-ALL BOOK

Q Your autobiography Dancing on Eggshells has just been published, what can people expect?

A Honesty. By the spade load. I’m an honest chap, sometimes too honest, so I’ve spoken candidly about mental health and body image, love and loss. I’d rather speak these stories through my own words, rather than have others write about them distortedly.

Q Why did you decide to tell your story now?

A Because the more I talk about things like bulimia and depression, ADHD and loneliness, it seems to resonate with people. The more we talk, the quicker we can eradicate shame, and I’m all for that. I’ve written my book honestly and without an ounce of shame, because what’s the point in that? People sometimes ask of me, ‘have you no pride?’, when I speak honestly. But I think what they’re really asking me is, ‘have you no shame?’. And the answer is a firm, resounding, ‘NO’.

Q You’ve written five cookbooks, how did the experience of writing this book di er?

A Well this book is non-fiction narrative, so I’ve had to figure out how to organise the scramble of thoughts, memories and feelings that have existed deep in my head. But it’s also been an emotional challenge. To look back at my behaviour and reactions, the relationships I’ve had and the turns they’ve taken, had been both heart-warming and really quite upsetting. But I think taking responsibility for our actions, looking back at the facts and not the fantasy, is what ultimately will lead to us fitting into this world as contentedly as we possibly can.

Q Your life changed dramatically after winning Great British Bake O in 2012. How did the experience of being thrust into the limelight again, almost a decade later, for Strictly Come Dancing 2021 di er?

A It had a similar e ect, I think. Afterwards, I missed the performance element of it, of course. But I also missed the people and the company – which is what I love most about theatre and television. There was also the emotional minefield that I got myself stranded in, and had to navigate my way out of that. But you’ll have to read the book for that!

Q Which experience do you think you’ve learnt from the most?

A Strictly. Because that was a chance to put into practice the skills and behaviours I had to learn after Bake O .

Q You’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD, how has the diagnosis made you feel?

A Getting the diagnosis, for the most part, has been enlightening. Because my family and I can now look back at situations with discernment and understanding, which is so powerful. But in a way, it scares me a bit, because now I question whether an impulse to do something creative is ‘just my ADHD talking’. So I kind of stop myself from jumping head-first into things, which has actually given me such a broad range of wonderful career and personal highlights.

Q You’re part of the team of co-hosts on Yorkshire-based daytime TV show Steph’s Packed Lunch, where do you head in your downtime after the show?

A The show has been set at Leeds Dock for nearly three years now, and it is such a brilliant accumulation of local talent! I haven’t really been able to explore anywhere recently, because when we finally emerged out of lockdown, I was whipped up in the Strictly maelstrom, and then have been busy ever since. But I do love a little night out

in Leeds with the crew from time to time – Fibre and Viaduct are firm favourites.

Q You’ve just been announced as Dandini in this year’s Cinderella panto at Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre...

A I cannot wait. I’ve missed the stage so much and have longed to get back on it (I need somewhere to direct this ball of attention-seeking energy I have, to stop myself acting like a plonker on social media!).

I’m most excited to see how magical it is for the children. Christmas spirit is such an elusive friend these days, so I think seeing the magic reflected in their eyes will make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Why we love… HARROGATE

Absolutely explores one of the county’s most admired spa towns

28
ABSOLUTELY magazines

Harrogate truly is one of Yorkshire’s most popular towns. While the Victorian spa town gains a great deal of traction, it is a place that enjoys the slower pace of life, providing a perfect location to escape to. Located in North Yorkshire, east of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Harrogate is surrounded by nature. Despite its harmonious ambiance, there are still countless activities to fill up your time, making it a splendid place to visit.

Spa Town Heritage

One characteristic that makes Harrogate so unique is its spa town heritage. The town originally became popular in Victorian times when members of the high society flocked to Harrogate to experience the natural spring waters. As the waters were seen to provide a range of health benefits, doctors began prescribing patients visits to the baths and the water was seen as a cure for many diseases. The town’s popularity only grew, with Britain’s elite making a visit to the baths part of their daily routine. As a result, Harrogate became a town associated with wellness, a place that the rich would go to relax, as it provided a relaxing atmosphere, good company and no business pressures. It then gained the status of one of Europe’s most famous spa resorts and, interestingly, Agatha Christie’s favourite spa town. Harrogate

now manufactures multi-award-winning bottled water, which is sold internationally.

To this day, Harrogate pays tribute to its heritage with an abundance of Victorian and Georgian houses still standing, many of which are used to accommodate visitors and tourists. Also paying homage to the history of the town, it’s home to the Turkish Baths and Health Spa. It provides luxury treatment packages, ensuring that visitors achieve full relaxation, whilst showcasing the history of healing with hydrotherapy departments, steam rooms and mud baths. A trip here will give you an insight into what it was like to be a part of high society in Victorian Britain.

You can even visit the Royal Pump Museum, located in the Montpellier Quarter, which exhibits the famous spa town history of Harrogate. The building was originally built in 1842 in order to provide a safe space for the elite whilst they took advantage of the popular mineral waters. The Pump Room then lost favour after the Second World War as the NHS came into existence. The special curing essence that the waters once carried became less in demand, leading the Pump Room to close. Later, in 1953, the building was reopened, but in the form of a museum.

With just a small charge, it is open to all and provides a unique experience of learning all about the town’s very special history, one which shapes the town it is today.

Retail Therapy

Harrogate has a great retail reputation. Montpellier Quarter is one of the most inviting parts of Harrogate, overlooking the Prospect Gardens. The streets are lined with boutiques, art galleries, cafes and restaurants, such as Morgan Clare, a fashion emporium that has been dressing us for over 25 years. Perfectly capturing the cosmopolitan essence of the town, you will be surrounded by floral displays, cobblestones and old-school lamp posts. It’s a lovely place to take a stroll, embark on a shopping journey or enjoy one of the lovely award-winning cafes or restaurants.

Peaceful Surroundings

What complements the character of Harrogate the most is the peacefulness surrounding it. The vast amount of green space and park area provides tranquillity within the town, which has over 2,000

Dine The Day Away

In Yorkshire, food and drink is at the heart of the culture, and Harrogate does not fall short of the usual expectations. It is even one of the few locations of the North’s most famous Tea Room: Betty’s, one of Harrogate’s biggest attractions. It has an incredibly impressive selection of

sweet treats to choose from, you truly are spoilt for choice. You can either pop into the shop to grab a fat rascal, or many more options to take away, or visit the Imperial Room to dine in. A beautiful building, in a lovely location, topped o with delicious sweet treats and a huge selection of top tier teas, what more could you ask for? They also have a cooking school, which provides a great unique activity. It’s located at their Hookstone Park Kitchen, with classes ranging from pastry making to cake decorating. It’s a must-do activity. Another exceptional place to dine is William & Victoria’s restaurant. The award-winning family-owned restaurant is one of Harrogate’s favourites. With local seasonal produce from Yorkshire farms, complemented by typical British cooking, it will not disappoint any appetites. The menu consists of classic British food, with hints of dishes that are influenced by countries from all over the world and has

THE GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW

The very best animals took centre stage at the Great Yorkshire Show, with a host of Supreme Championship winners and the crowd-pleasing Ripon Select Foods Cock O’ the North showjumping competition.

Television presenter Matt Baker MBE took to the GYS Stage and visited the Cheese and Dairy Show, while Peter Wright of Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet was a special guest at the Garden Show. Both took a tour of the Forestry section, to see everything from horse logging to stick making. Competition was fierce in the show rings, with cattle, sheep, pigs and horses all challenging for the titles of Supreme Champion in their sections. As always, the Ripon Select Foods Cock O’ the North kept the grandstands packed and the crowd roaring until the bitter end. There were four treble clears by the end, with County Durham rider Annabel Shields taking the title on Hamilton Horses’ Creevagh Charisma with more than two seconds in hand over the other three treble clears.

It was just one of many highlights across four memorable days in July. Successes in agriculture and champion cattle, cheese, pigeons and forestry were all recognised. Spectators were treated to the spectacular stunt riding of Lorenzo in the Main Ring and Adam Henson’s popular chat show returned to the GYS Stage.

A Royal visit, two national cattle championships, two new sheep breeds and a brand new Sheep to Chic fashion show were among the highlights when the sell-out show opened. HRH The Duke of Gloucester was taken on a tour of the Show by the Show Director Charles Mills and HM Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire Mrs Jo Ropner, seeing horses, cattle and the latest in farming technology. ART FROM THE HEART

Masterpieces by Rembrandt and Lucas Cranach, and works of art by celebrated artists Tracey Emin and Ron Mueck, are on display in a new exhibition at Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland, until 1 October.

Sin: The Art of Transgression has been organised by the National Gallery, London in association with The Auckland Project and brings together works of art that span centuries, in a unique presentation which explores the fascinating relationship between sin and art.

The exhibition brings together exceptional masterpieces from the National Gallery’s own collection, including Rembrandt’s The Woman Taken in Adultery (1644) and Lucas Cranach the Elder’s Venus and Cupid (1529), and works by leading contemporary artists, including the UK’s Tracey Emin and renowned Australian artist Ron Mueck. The exhibition also includes Maíno’s The Penitent Magalene (1600s), from The Auckland Project’s own collection, with the overall exhibition encouraging visitors to define their own meaning of ‘Sin’.

Charlotte Grobler, Auckland Castle’s curator, says: “The Auckland Project is quickly developing a reputation for bringing nationally and internationally renowned works of art to Bishop Auckland. Last year’s display in the Spanish Gallery featuring Dali’s Christ of St John of the Cross attracted thousands of people, and this summer we are thrilled to be working with the National Gallery on its exhibition at Auckland Castle, which is another landmark moment for the town.”

Dr Joost Joustra, the National Gallery’s curator, adds: “Sin in many ways defines humankind and therefore defines the art that humans create. Sin has been the subject of countless works of art that have been

made for centuries across the world. Just think of the many depictions of Adam and Eve eating forbidden fruit, perhaps the most famous biblical story of them all.”

Entry to Sin: The Art of Transgression is free with The Auckland Project Annual Pass, which also gives visitors access to The Auckland Project’s other attractions in Bishop Auckland, including Auckland Castle’s Gardens, the Spanish Gallery and the Mining Art Gallery. The Auckland Project’s Annual Pass costs £25 for adults with family tickets available and is valid for 12 months.

The Annual Pass will also include entry to the new Faith Museum opening on 7 October 2023. This unique museum will explore how faith, belief and religion have shaped lives and communities in Britain throughout history. The Faith Museum’s story begins 6,000 years ago taking visitors on a journey through time, with four dynamic gallery spaces and over 250 objects including rarely seen objects, national treasures, personal mementos and contemporary art commissions.

The Auckland Project’s attractions are open from 10.30am–4pm Wednesday to Sunday. To plan your visit and purchase an annual pass, visit aucklandproject.org

HOLDING COURT

Philippine-born chef Marlon Sanchez is making his mark on the York foodie scene, and is now Head Chef at the fivestar Judge’s Lodging in York. He tells Absolutely all about it

44 ABSOLUTELY magazines

The earliest food memory I can recall is experiencing the street food vendors in the Philippines as a child. At night time, the streets come alive with flavour, colours and laughter. It’s a place where families and friends gather and enjoy local delicacies with their loved ones – so it’s not only one of my earliest food memories, but also one of my most treasured.

My whole family has a passion for cooking, so it’s been instilled in me from a young age. My parents opened a restaurant called Teddy’s Best Fast Food in the Philippines and

every day after school I would help my parents with everything from preparing ingredients to cleaning dishes. It gave me my first taste of what life would be like as a chef.

I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a chef, so I saved up to put myself through the world-renowned Culinary Institute of Barcelona. One of the teachers who inspired me the most also worked at El Celler de Can Roca in Barcelona, which holds three Michelin stars. Once I had finished my degree, I saw that Tommy Banks’ restaurant, The Black Swan at Oldstead, had an opening so I applied – and the rest is history.

Whilst I’ll always love my home in the Philippines, I have always admired the UK. It’s a beautiful country with a rich culture and history. When the opportunity arose to work with Tommy Banks, it was a no-brainer; I could practice my English while also developing my culinary skills. One di erence I have noticed with the UK compared to other countries is the importance placed on food presentation.

Joining The Black Swan after completing culinary school was the best decision of my life. Tommy’s talent is undeniable, but most importantly he’s a humble, downto-earth guy, which in part is why he’s so successful. He treated all of his sta excellently and was truly invested in everyone’s personal development. Working alongside Tommy, I experienced

the di erent sides of che ng and it also equipped me with an authentic experience of what working in the culinary industry is like.

It’s always been my dream to open a restaurant where I can create my own dishes and build my own team. When General Manager at The Judge’s Lodging, Nik Haywood, approached me with the idea of launching a fine-dining restaurant, I didn’t think twice about jumping on board. As a duo, we’ve worked really hard to get 1711 to where it is today.

Nik’s passion for the property’s rich history combined with my creative culinary skills and experience has enabled us to introduce a truly unique concept to York’s food scene.

We’re really lucky that The Judge’s Lodging not only holds such a prominent location in the heart of York city centre, but also has such an interesting historical story. The new restaurant’s name nods to the history of the building, which dates back to 1711 and interestingly became the residence of Judges attending the Assize Court sessions some 300 years ago. The hotel is part of familyowned hospitality business Daniel Thwaites, and not only boasts the 1711 restaurant, but also o ers guests an al fresco drinking experience out on the private terrace, dinner in the courtyard or AA Rosette awarded food in the Cellar Bar.

I dig heavily into my Filipino roots when it comes to my cooking style. I love working with Asian ingredients such as ginger, calamansi, galangal,

and lemongrass and I often infuse them into Mediterranean cuisine. My true passion is combining food cultures without stripping them of their identity, all while serving them in my own unique style.

At 1711, we’ve created an Asianinfused Mediterranean style menu that we’re proud of. My passion for creating modern cuisine with an Asian twist that captures rich Mediterranean flavours also extends to using local and sustainably sourced ingredients, so I look at what seasonal ingredients our suppliers are o ering and come up with creative ways to fit them into our menu.

From classic French onion soup to exotic tempeh with corn sauce, our menu o ers a variety of tempting dishes. For fish lovers, I would recommend starting with our homemade salmon gravlax served with onion chutney, and if you’re looking for a meat option, try the venison carpaccio seasoned with onion skin powder, smoked sea salt and served with black garlic and caramelized onion puree, finished o with crispy shallots and wild garlic oil. My Paella Negra is a main course dish that I’m particularly proud of. Featuring octopus tentacles, squid, lobster aioli, samphire and caviar, the flavours remind me of my time in Barcelona. Asian-style braised ox cheek is my signature dish. If you’ve ever had Filipino Adobo it’s very similar. In my culture, people have a habit of feeding their guests when someone comes to visit, and you can’t escape it, as it can be seen as rude if

you don’t eat what your host has prepared. One of the most popular dishes to serve is either pork or chicken Adobo, which is basically meat marinated in aromatic flavours including soy and vinegar, and accompanied with steamed white rice. I decided to create my own version with our ox cheek dish that is braised for five hours at a low temperature with a lot of Asian flavours such as ginger, lemongrass and fermented sauces. Once tender with a thick and rich sauce, it is served with pomme puree, crispy bacon, kale and jus.

A new menu will be redesigned every few weeks, with guests able to select from five starters, five main dishes and five desserts. For us, it’s important to use seasonal ingredients in our dishes and so by changing the menu every few weeks, we’re able to work closely with our suppliers to utilise the very best fresh produce available. Not only does this make it exciting for us chefs as we get to constantly create new ideas, but it also means that our returning customers have a completely di erent experience every time they come back.

The Judge’s Lodging has already been on the scene for a long time and has always been known for its AA Rosette awarded Cellar Bar which o ers a British gastropub-style menu. 1711 delivers a completely di erent food o ering and concept as an Asian-Mediterranean fusion fine dining restaurant. We don’t just make dishes – we create experiences and each of our dishes has a di erent story to tell.

A
AT THE PLOUGH

Meet the chef… Jon Smith

The

behind The

The Plough is situated in the pretty village of Scalby, just outside Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast, and is the perfect gateway to the North York Moors National Park. This friendly village pub/ restaurant prides itself on o ering quality food and was awarded an AA Rosette in 2022, plus it features an interesting variety of local craft ales, a fine selection of spirits and wines as well as stylish accommodation. Their relaxed restaurant and bar delivers a great pub and food experience – whether you’re looking for a quick bite to eat or more leisurely meal, look no further. Head Chef, Jon Smith, and his talented team create classic modern British dishes with new and exciting flavours using fresh, seasonal Yorkshire ingredients.

The team prides itself in providing something for every taste and occasion and diners can choose from popular pub classics such as traditional Beer Battered Fish ‘n’ Chips, their Homemade Pies

on

or fresh Market Fish of the Day. The traditional Sunday roasts use only the finest prime Yorkshire beef and their specials board allows them to showcase the very best local and seasonal ingredients. Absolutely Yorkshire sat down with Jon to find out more about his career and find out how he’s made Scalby a food destination.

Q Before coming to The Plough, what have been your career highlights?

A I used to have a farm shop and butchers called ‘The Hares Leap’ that was on

the Duchy of Lancaster estate, and I was fortunate to meet the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. I provided catering for the garden party at the local town farm, afterwards I presented them with a hamper, but somehow the game pie within went missing in transit to the helicopter. Upon finding it missing, the Queen’s private secretary wrote to me requesting a new game pie to be sent to Balmoral Castle post haste for them to enjoy! This was of course a great privilege.

Q Why were you attracted to the Head Chef role at The Plough?

A I jumped at the chance to work for Nick Thomas as I knew he would create something really special at The Plough and I was honoured to be asked to lead the food o ering.

Q Would you say there is a typical Jon Smith style of cooking?

A Big, bold flavours, nothing too fancy, cooked from the heart.

Q What menus do you o er at The Plough?

A We o er a menu that changes four times a year with the seasons, supplemented with an ever-changing chalkboard to take advantage of the wonderful seafood available to us on the east coast.

Q What three dishes would you say sums up what The Plough is all about?

A We are well-known for our steamed mussels, which always appear with di erent garnishes, for instance, wild garlic mariniere in the spring or chorizo and heritage tomatoes in the summer. We always have a handmade pie of the day on o er – braised beef shin, thyme and red wine is always a firm favourite. Currently its our rump of Yorkshire lamb with lamb boulangere, courgette, spaghetti, whipped feta and preserved lemon salsa.

Q Do you make use of local produce?

A Wherever possible, yes. Lobsters from the west pier landed in Scarborough, our pork comes from three miles away at Stepney Hill farm, venison and game birds from local estates, and wild morels from Hunmanby, to name but a few.

Q How did it feel to be awarded an AA Rosette back in 2022?

A Brilliant! It was a great moment for the whole team and testament to all their hard work, I couldn’t be prouder of them.

FEET FIRST

Q Did your time living in di erent countries influence your approach to footwear design?

A Absolutely, my time spent living in di erent countries has definitely had an impact on footwear design. For instance, holidaying at our family home in Puglia, surrounded by the fabulous star-topped trullo houses and magical starlit skies, massively inspired the design of the Star Collection. The unique atmosphere and experiences I share with my children in that region have undeniably left their mark on my designs. Furthermore, my circle of friends from various nationalities has played a crucial role in shaping my design perspective. Interacting with people from di erent cultures has enriched my life and also understanding of aesthetics, preferences, and styles; ultimately influencing the way I design footwear.

Q Why did you decide to follow your passion for shoes?

A I’m a total shoe addict! So the decision to pursue my passion for shoes was a natural one, rooted in my lifelong love of heeled footwear. From a young age, I found myself captivated by shoes, often wearing my grandmother's heels and noticing how they transformed her sense of femininity and confidence. This had left a huge impression

on me and sparked the desire to create a similar experience for our customers. My love for heels and vibrant colours serves as a driving force behind my design choices. I've always found that colours have the ability to uplift moods, and I wanted to share this positive energy with our customers.

Q Has being a mother inspired your creations in any way?

A Absolutely, being a mother has been an immense source of inspiration for my creations. Raising my three children has provided me with very valuable insights into the practical challenges that mothers often face with footwear. I remember too well moments of wearing heels to special occasions like weddings and christenings and looking after my young children required me to be on my feet constantly. The discomfort caused by poorly designed and crafted designer shoes was a reality that drove me to prioritise both style and comfort in my designs. As a woman designing for fellow women, I understand the expectations and needs of those seeking stylish footwear which don’t compromise on comfort. This empathy has fueled my commitment to crafting heels that not only o er elegance, but also o er the ease and support required for mothers and women with active lifestyles.

Moreover, as a mother, I have experienced too well societal judgments and expectations placed upon women's fashion choices, particularly when it comes to wearing heels. I aim to challenge these norms and empower fellow mothers to make footwear decisions based on their personal preferences and comfort.

Q What does Rosamund Muir o er today?

A Rosamund Muir provides exquisitely handcrafted statement heeled footwear aimed at all ages, which embrace and celebrate individual style. Our brand is dedicated to the principles of slow fashion, steering clear of fleeting seasonal trends. Each pair of our footwear is meticulously crafted in limited quantities from surplus stock leathers, exemplifying our commitment to sustainability and uniqueness.

Q Are there elements of your approach that you believe makes you stand out?

A I believe our stand out factor lies in our genuine commitment to sustainability. While many brands claim to o er sustainable footwear, we distinguish ourselves by practicing what we preach. Our approach involves creating slow fashion footwear through the use of only by product surplus stock leathers. This ensures that we avoid

contributing to environmental harm caused by tanning processes and excessive water consumption. Also our sustainable ethos revolves around zero waste, and any leather pieces which are unusable for our shoes are given to schools for use in craft projects.

Q Who are the artisans you work with?

A We have a very small atelier of six very experienced sta and each has their own role in the shoe making process. For example, I discuss patterns with Elena and she develops them, Gina hand cuts the upper and lining leathers, Lili and Ruxi work on stitching and adding accessories, and Mihai and Cris work with placing the stitched footwear on to the lasts and attaching the soles and heels.

Q What’s new for AW23?

A I’m so excited to introduce a fabulous collection of loafers and boots, online from 1 September. These collections have a strong focus incorporating beautiful reptile textures such as lizard, snake and crocodile. These patterns are printed onto by-product cow leathers, a conscious choice aimed at raising awareness about the inhumane breeding of real lizards, snakes, and crocodiles solely for their skins. By using only by-product cow leathers with reptile textures, we are o ering a stunning range of footwear and also contributing to a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry. These collections represents our commitment to both style and environmental responsibility, providing our customers choices which align with their values.

by the skill it takes to make such deceptively simple artworks look e ortless when actually they’re the result of years of practice. I feel it’s similar to pattern cutting in that one sweep of the brush can change the whole picture, just as one perfectly positioned drape or fold of fabric can transform a dress. Like using fabric like a paintbrush.

Rolling in Roses are a small-scale British label with a focus on thoughtful design and high-end craftsmanship, creating conscious bridalwear for individuals who walk to the beat of their own drum. The typical Rolling In Roses bride? There isn’t one. They dress brides from all walks of life and of all shapes and sizes.

Their fabrics are gentle to the earth, their dressmaking techniques traditional and refined, their designs a blend of the classic and the avant-garde. They are not, if not obvious from this, fast fashion.

The name 'Rolling In Roses' is taken from an early Patti Smith poem. Known as 'the godmother of punk', she embodies their ethos of designing for the o beat, sophisticated, fiercely independent bride. The dreamers, the poets, the music-makers, the lovers.

They have just launched a new collection, called The Kirei Collection, with designs inspired by founder Hayley Neil’s time spent travelling in Japan. Here, she explains about the inspiration behind what’s a truly stunning collection.

“I went to Japan whilst travelling around Asia for my honeymoon and fell in love with

how the peacefulness and tranquillity of Japanese design can be seen in everything, from ceramics and print to gardens and architecture. The use of negative space in both modern and ancient Japanese art is so inspiring to me. The intention to keep things as simple as possible with no unnecessary or frivolous detail, and let the basic form and essence of things speak for themselves.

“I was considering this as a starting point for the new collection, and also happened to see an exhibition of 18th century Japanese prints that showed the beautiful clothes worn by the courtesans of the time, and as a designer I couldn’t help but be inspired by the folds and drapes of the rich fabrics. Then coincidentally I saw a documentary about Japanese ‘sumi-e’ ink painting. Sumi-e is the embodiment of Japanese aesthetics, using just simple black ink and carefully curated white space, and I was blown away

I read that the Japanese traditionally view

“Then I went on to research kimonos that are so beautifully simple in their construction, but so modern in their decoration, even the ones from hundreds of years ago. There are many pieces in the collection which reveal or display the nape of the neck; this is because I read that the Japanese traditionally view the nape to be the most erogenous part of the body as it was one of the only areas left uncovered by the kimono. I learnt about kimonos which take a year to make, from the silk being produced, bound, dyed naturally with a particular type of mud, woven, cut and sewn. Every step of the way the fabric is being valued and made more precious. I feel like brides should be able to feel that way about their wedding dress; we try so hard at RIR to create an appreciation of everything.

“Quality, luxury fabrics are everything to us at RIR, and I’m over the moon to say that 94.8% of the fabrics used in this collection have sustainable certification; whether that’s organic, closed-loop, vegan, biodegradable, compostable, or recycled, meaning our materials are produced in ways that protect the environment, are cruelty-free and ethically made. And even the 5.2% of fabrics we use without certification are natural biodegradable fabrics, so we’re incredibly proud. I hope you love the new designs and can’t wait to see you wearing them.”

THE KUMIHIMO DRESS THE BUREIKU DRESS THE TANDOKU BLOUSE

Q Is the Mother of the Bride or Groom a key part of your business?

A With over 300 outfits in stock, Special Occasion wear most certainly is, and Mother of the Bride and Groom is our biggest part of that.

Q Let’s start with Mother of the Bride… When it comes to the outfit, what’s the first thing to bear in mind?

A Without a doubt, comfort! Feeling beautiful starts with being comfortable and confident. If you’re not comfortable in your outfit, you won’t feel amazing, and you certainly won’t enjoy the day as much as you should.

Q Should the Mother of the Bride adhere to bridal party colour themes?

A Traditionally, yes, but if a Mum isn’t comfortable in that colour, then no. Most Mums will choose a complementary colour to suit both them and the bridal party. We tend to divide colours into two groups; sugared almond colours and jewel colours, or pastels and brights. If the bridal party colour is a sugared almond colour, then a Mum in any other of those colours will still complement

Something special

Joyce Clappison, the founder of Wat’s On in Hull, o ers up her top tips for the Mother of the Bride (or Groom)

beautifully. Some Mums will choose to complement the Bride and wear white, ivory, cream or champagne colours. The overall e ect can be amazing!

Q What kind of outfits are popular at Wat’s On for a Mother of the Bride?

A The ‘fit and flare’ style has been the most popular this season, alongside feminine, floaty fabrics. The surge in di erent wedding venues such as barns has definitely played a part in the type of outfit a Mum chooses. Overall, the look of choice is much more relaxed than previous seasons, however the formal, structured look is still popular, and fabulous, for church weddings and stately home settings.

Q How does the above di er for the Mother of the Groom?

A It doesn’t, except there are not many Mums of the Groom who will choose an outfit in a traditional bridal colour without the express consent of the Bride. But whether you are Mum of the Bride or Mum of the Groom, you want to look and feel your best for your son or daughter’s most special day, and you deserve to, too.

Q Does this aspect come with a degree of less pressure?

A Not really. Saying that, some Mums of the Groom will feel as though there is less pressure, and it’s usually the Mums who have a daughter too.

But one of our team was Mum of the Groom last year and, only having one child, definitely felt the pressure because, as she said at the time, it was her one and only time to get it right.

Q Are there any real no-gos when looking at the above?

A Every Mum will have a di erent picture in her mind of what her perfect outfit looks like, but rarely will she actually choose that outfit. Because of this, we place great emphasis on Mums trying on di erent styles and fabrics, and imagining themselves getting dressed on the special day, as she will then naturally find what she feels comfortable and confident in. That moment when a Mum looks in the mirror and realises that she looks and feels beautiful is priceless. It’s why we wear waterproof mascara at Wat’s On!

When you meet that special person, get engaged and start to daydream of your married life ahead, the last thing on your mind is the practical financial arrangements in the event of separation. It might be that you are set to inherit the family business, and Mum and Dad have suggested you need something in place to protect it. It might be that you have saved your whole life and have a large deposit to place into a house purchase with your spouse to be and want to protect it. It might be that you have assets that have accrued prior to your relationship with your spouse to be and want to protect them. There are a whole host of reasons why you might consider a pre-nuptial agreement. It is of course a di cult issue to raise and can often cause friction or anxiety. It can however be very useful, avoiding future heartache, stress and sometimes significant legal costs down the line by providing clarity.

Prepared BE

What is a Pre-Nuptial Agreement?

Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors explain all

Nuptial agreements are not legally binding in the courts in the UK, but if entered into correctly, meeting a certain criterion, are extremely persuasive. The key is to ensure the agreement is fair, and needs are met. Needs means essentially housing and income. It’s no good having a “I get everything, and you get nothing” arrangement, as unless your spouse already has pre-marital assets that will meet needs, or you have joint assets that will meet needs once divided, a court is unlikely to deem that agreement fair. Proper advice and a carefully constructed nuptial agreement that meets needs can provide you with transparency and allow you to put that issue to one side and concentrate on your marriage. If you have assets you want to protect or have an agreement in place, you should consider a nuptial agreement, and this can take the form of a pre-nuptial agreement (entered in advance of your marriage) or a post-nuptial agreement (after the wedding). The key is following the process to ensure as far as possible the agreement carries weight and is persuasive.

IN ORDER TO DO THAT, OUR ADVICE IS TO FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

1. Ensure you both want the agreement and there is no suggestion of pressure/duress;

2. Ensure transparency in the process;

3. Ensure you both have the benefit of separate and independent legal advice;

4. Ensure the agreement is entered into in a timely manner (not a last-minute rush);

5. Ensure the agreement is fair – your spouse must be provided for, and any agreement should contemplate children and the needs of the children (if relevant) met.

Let nature work its magic during the North York Moors National Park’s Mindful Month

74 ABSOLUTELY magazines
MINDFUL MEANDER RAVENSCAR, PHOTO BY CERI OAKES

The North York Moors National Park has once again designated September as Mindful Month as a way of highlighting how spending time in the landscape surrounded by nature can help people find rest and relaxation, as well as boost their wellbeing in preparation for winter.

The sense of calm and peacefulness that comes with spending time in nature is well known and Mindful Month is designed to bring together a programme of events that inspire people to seek out those places and activities that provide a welcome break from life’s stresses.

While walking through beautiful landscape is relaxing in itself, some of the Mindful Month events take this up a notch by encouraging people to forget their

mobile phones and other distractions and stroll more mindfully using techniques that bring all their senses into play. Visitors can choose from mindful strolls with Wild Walks Yorks in Riccaldale, Rievaulx and Ampleforth; join Claire Rodway in a session in Raincli e Woods; or venture over to Ellerburn for a twilight nature safari and stargazing evening with Adventures for The Soul and Yorkshire Coast Nature.

For some, relaxation comes more easily when they’re absorbed in a creative activity, which is why there are a number of nature-themed art

and writing events during September including the Staithes Festival of Art and Heritage, which is making a welcome comeback after a four-year absence.

Coinciding with The Secret Life of Hedgerows exhibition at the National Park’s Inspired by… gallery, Danby Lodge National Park Centre has sessions with the artist in residence Bridget Bailey, where visitors can either learn more about her ‘nature table’ inspiration or join in with a knapweed flower craft workshop.

Danby is also hosting a creative writing workshop with published author and poet Clara Challoner Walker and Janet Dean, who create a relaxing environment to help draw out people’s ‘inner writer’.

Yoga in its various forms plays a big role during Mindful Month with an array of sessions happening in beauty spots such as the South Cli Gardens at Scarborough or the beaches at Whitby and Sandsend. Alternatively visitors can head slightly inland, either to the tranquil riverside setting of Yoga & Spice for an exercise or wellness day, or the genteel market town of Helmsley for a walking and yoga weekend.

There are also two evenings, on the 16 and 29 September, when people can head to the quiet rural setting of Coast and Camplight at Stainsacre, either for a group sound meditation to see how sounds can be soothing and restorative, or to join in with a yoga practice as the full Harvest Moon rises in the night sky.

There’s even an eight-week Mindfulness Course that begins in September where people can delve deeper into the techniques associated with being mindful with the help of Claire Rodway, Woodland Wellbeing O cer, who will use the beautiful surroundings of Raincli e Woods for some of the sessions.

Herbal tea made in Yorkshire

Thankfully Healthy, a pioneering Yorkshire-based homegrown ayurvedic herbal tea brand, is expanding fast. The teas are made from authentic ingredients sourced from India, the land of ayurveda (an ancient system of holistic medicine), and are vegan, ca eine-free and healthy. They come in unique flavours that are free from flavourings, nicotine and bitterness. They are the brainchild of Dipti Arora, who lives and works in Harrogate. “As a certified ayurvedic therapist, I already had a passion for creating unique and healthy spiced tea blends. Positive support and love from my family and friends inspired me to turn my passion into a career, taking the teas from my kitchen to tea boxes on farm shop shelves. As a consumer, I was frustrated with the tea blends available in the supermarket. They were often infused with flavourings, bitterness, ca eine and were not plastic-free. And when I did come across a healthy tea brand, it was often too expensive to make a part of my regular routine. This frustration was the catalyst for Thankfully Healthy, a brand that makes a ordable, high-quality ayurvedic herbal teas.” As a small business, Dipti is passionate about making her consumers proud of the brand’s choices when purchasing her products. Home and commercial gyms in the United Kingdom and Ireland are about to level up

One of the USA’s top gym equipment brands has joined forces with the UK’s largest speciality fitness retailer, which is sure to make your workout even more e ective. Starting this summer, Bodypower Sports Ltd. (trading as Fitness Superstore) will carry a large range of REP Fitness equipment. This expansion was in response to a growing demand from lifters overseas, after REP took the US by storm. It kicks o the launch of REP products throughout all of Europe, so more people can have access to REP’s versatile, quality, innovative equipment at a ordable prices.

REP, founded a decade ago in Colorado by two gym-loving brothers, has risen to become

America’s most popular brand in the home gym market (with cost in mind). It o ers a full line of gym gear, all designed by in-house, weightlifting engineers. REP’s award-winning power racks, benches, functional training gyms, and more will soon be available for UK customers to try out and order in Fitness Superstore showrooms across the UK (11 stores). Fitness Superstore, founded in 1994, is the largest supplier of specialist fitness equipment in the UK and is proud to feature the largest fitness equipment showrooms in the UK. “We’re excited to be working with such a strong partner in the UK with Fitness Superstore. IN GOOD

HEALTH

Q Whereabouts were you born in Yorkshire?

A Sunny Doncaster! I go back every month as my Mum lives there, and I still have some of my best and oldest mates in Donny.

Q What was the first thing you created for market?

A Egg-cups made from bedsprings, which were ordered by Terence Conran for Habitat and went on to be a huge commercial hit –everyone seems to have a set tucked away, although in the end there were many copies so I look out for people with the originals.

Q How quickly did your own company flourish?

A Super fast after I produced the egg-cups and won Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 1989!

Q What projects do you look back on with a great deal of satisfaction?

A I’m very fortunate there have been so many… A stand out was probably designing the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee teapot. We made it in She eld from sterling silver and gold plate with a diamond set into the crown lid and everybody involved with the project was very proud of the result, but best of all the lady herself approved!

Q Why did you sell nickmunro. com’s commercial operations?

A It was the right time and the right deal in truth. In business, the golden rule is that you have to focus in order to succeed and part of that is working out what you want to do and what you are best at doing – and there were other exciting opportunities knocking at my door that I wanted to take up.

Q What has this enabled you to do?

A Well first of all it allowed me to convert my original trading enterprise into a client for my new Studio venture, which allowed me to step away from day to day commercial responsibilities such as warehousing, distribution, HR etc and spend more time on design, including commissions from prestigious clients such as Burberry. Meanwhile I had been appointed Visiting Professor of Design at Imperial College.

INTER I ORS • INTERVIEW
NICK AND ALI MUNRO WITH THEIR BUTTERFLY CREATION
Nick Munro has long been the brains behind innovative products for the home, and his new venture is inspired by nature to make us feel better

Q What kind of things have you created through your studio?

A We were very fortunate to be commissioned right away by Burberry to design their new ‘Thomas Burberry’ café concept, which opened autumn 2019 and is now being rolled out across their international store network. We had all the ceramics, silverware and glassware made in the UK and it was really exciting to work closely with the fashion design team based in London. Meanwhile we’ve been working on a bunch of new concepts. Carrs of She eld: pioneering modern design solutions for She eld’s traditional cutlery industry with my son Alfie Munro to develop export markets and re-energise craft skills – it's been a joy to return to my roots and engage with the best of She eld, expertise, energy and entrepreneurship. Versatiron: designing innovative new shape concepts in lightweight cast iron pans manufactured in China for Crate&Barrel USA, which combine circular and elliptical forms to optimise ergonomics and encourage ‘east meets west’ cuisine, featuring distinctive Bauhaus inspired colours created by my wife Ali Munro that provide a new and versatile cookery ‘language’ for millennials.

Q Butterfly Air is a recent launch...

A This is a very exciting and super ambitious new technology venture, which I founded with three amazing partners including my wife Ali. It is a spin out from Imperial College where we have put together an interdisciplinary team of designers, creatives and engineers to develop a patented, AI enabled technology for Indoor Air Quality monitoring. We are all lovers of the natural world and our inspiration came from the fact that in nature, when butterflies appear we know the air is healthy, so we set up Butterfly to deliver improved health and sustainability standards in the built environment. We secured venture capital backing from the outset and are now developing high level collaborations with industrial groups

including Rensair Denmark and Halton Finland, not to mention Imperial College Estates. Up, up and away you might say!

Q And what can you tell us about Sapho?

A When we were developing the Butterfly system for professional use in commercial buildings, we decided that we could condense the technology down and o er a version of it to the domestic market, so people who see Butterfly in their o ce are able to install it at home also. That’s where Sapho comes in – we’ve applied all our design and engineering talents to it so we can o er people an a ordable, simple to install, hi-tech product that is accurate and informative to help people understand the air quality in their homes and take simple actions to keep their lifestyle as safe as it can be. We chose the name Sapho because Heliconius Sapho is the Latin name for the butterfly with the longest memory that we thought was rather poetic for a clever little data capturing device.

Q Where would you like to go from here?

A The thing I’ve discovered with a design career is there are really no limits to what you can take on, so you have the freedom to literally design your own future. That’s a mantra that I give to students at Imperial College and mindful of ‘practising what you preach’ I set up a new creative consultancy for students called Dreamteam Design, which blends their talents with external professionals to deliver challenging real world projects for which they get paid properly. So far this has been a big success with lots of bright young minds engaged on projects that combine art, design, science, craft and technology and include PPE masks, VIP giftware, BMX bikes, sculpture, chocolate, interiors, The Chelsea Flower Show, and digital comms such as the new Imperial App. So as far as I can see the sky really is the limit.

Flower POWER

The Tile Company on one aspect of the design world that is positively blooming

One of the clearest trends over the past few years, as far as tiling goes, has been the search for a wallpaper e ect on porcelain stoneware tiles. A total look of floral-patterned walls and floors are an increasingly more popular solution for interior designers and those looking for a special renovation for their interiors.

Porcelain stoneware that looks like wallpaper

The wall covering, i.e. the technique of covering one or more walls with visually stunning decorations, is already widespread and adored. Moreover, the latest digital printing technologies have opened new possibilities for customisation and allow for the creation of genuine works of art.

Once upon a time, wallpaper was the only thing that allowed one to “draw” on the wall, but today we can even find collections of eye-catching small or large tiles. Its advantage with respect to wallpaper is that it is more durable and o ers more versatility on both walls and floors indoors and outdoors.

Floral-patterned walls and floors

Right now, there’s an incredible collection of expressive nature-inspired and floral patterns in large formats of 60 ×120 cm for walls and floors, or 30 x 60cm/40 x 120cm for walls. From wonderfully vintage with wild flowers, petals in a water-coloured e ect, large tropical and palm leaves, botanical motifs, geometric patterns dense with colour, or delicate cherry-tree flowers and branches. To complete the look, there’s a range of solid-coloured backgrounds to experiment with colour and vegetation pairings.

Why do we like floral porcelain stoneware so much?

Because it is eye-catching, modest, spectacular, and as natural as a bouquet of flowers or plants which bring life to the home. Whether you’re looking to make a bold statement, or add extra value to your home with the addition of carefully selected, intricatelydesigned patterned tiles, make sure that you choose the best provider for design, choice and experience. The Tile Company o ers a diverse range of quality tiles and bathrooms across its Yorkshire showrooms.

LAKESIDE LUXURY

HOTEL EDEN ROC ASCONA

The Italian lakes are impossibly beautiful – but in high season it can feel as though half the population of the world is drawn to Como. But there are several other lakes, not all of them quite as hectic, and that’s why we have come to Maggiore, the region’s second-largest lake. Most of Maggiore belongs to Italy, but the northernmost part is Swiss –and it’s here that the quietly beautiful town of Ascona combines a Swiss wholesomeness with the glamour of the Italian lakes.

Ascona’s main waterfront strip is a colourful run of brightly hued houses that look more German than Italian, with the microclimate’s signature palm trees defining the landscape, along with the mountains behind. It’s an extraordinary spot. We’re staying at Eden Roc, a luxurious hotel with a strong focus on wellbeing and relaxation. Built in the 1970s, it has an enviable position with lots of spots from which to enjoy the views, which are, without exception, breathtaking.

Here it’s all about the lake, which we admire over breakfast, lunch and dinner on the shore, and also from various boats in the water. Activities include excursions on the hotel’s sailing boat and on the hotel’s

Sail

yacht, on which we cruise towards a small island that’s home to an extraordinary botanical garden filled with lush and unlikely flora – there are spectacular rhododendrons, mature palms and sprawling cacti surrounding a private Italianate palazzo.

Eden Roc – along with the rest of the Tschuggen group to which it belongs – has a wellness programme called Moving Mountains. This, they say, is designed “to help you restore vitality, reconnect with nature and celebrate joy”, which is a pretty accurate description of how we actually do feel here. A diverse o ering of activities spans paddleboarding, kayaking, lake swimming from the hotel’s own beach, yoga, paragliding and hiking as well as lots of excursions into the region. We take a guided tour of Bolle de Magadino to see one of Switzerland’s last remaining delta ecosystems where a heavily protected wetland is home to an impressive number of rare and endangered species. Here we watch nesting swans and swimming turtles and learn about the area’s significance as a rest stop for migratory birds.

Back at the hotel, dining options are varied: the Moving Mountains menu options are wholesome, with a vegan slant, but there are also less worthy options in the name of gastronomic excellence. We are promised the world’s best tomato pasta, and treated to

a live cookery demonstration as sta roll up a mobile hob and proceed to sling quantities of tomatoes into hot olive oil to demonstrate the resulting alchemy. Another restaurant o ers a global menu with a cavalier mix-and-match approach, so we enjoy dim sum and mezze along with excellent lake-caught pike and Italy’s popular Franciacorta sparkling wine. Sustainability-wise, there’s a strong commitment to the hotel’s carbon neutral pledge. A temporary art exhibition is currently on display (until the end of August), a site-specific project commissioned specially to use waste generated by the hotel. So in the lobby there’s a wall of bricks made from recycled menus and discarded cut flowers and a row of ornate frames displaying tangles of plastic packaging.

With the hotel’s dual focuses on sustainability and wellbeing, there’s a serene, quiet feel to the place. Rooms are spacious and bathrooms are vast (we note that we’ve never found a bathroom scale in a hotel before). The spa is high class, and the heated indoor/outdoor pool is a luxury for when the lake is just a little too chilly. In all, Eden Roc is a treat for all the senses.

Rooms start at CHF 390 based on two adults sharing a standard double on a B&B basis. edenroc.ch

CARE & ATTENTION

Body of WORK

Manraj Kaur Sanghera, from Harrogate, is a teacher of 25 years, a model and ambassador for York Fashion Week, and a body confidence activist who champions diversity and inclusivity in fashion. Here, as she prepares to be involved in York Fashion Week, she shares her views around body confidence issues a ecting our children.

Q What changes have you seen in children around the issues of body confidence?

A Increasingly I witness a significant lack of self-worth and esteem across all genders. This manifests itself in a desire to appear skinnier, crave the Kardashian curves and to invest in longer eyelashes, fake tan, false nails, plumped lips and hair extensions. While boys are preoccupied with lifting weights in the gym, drinking protein shakes and even taking steroids to get 'the look'. Conversely, I’m noticing an increase in eating disorders within this group too. Students are very much focussed on their physical appearance, which has definitely contributed to an increase in mental health referrals to under-funded services that have lengthy waiting lists.

Q What are the key factors fuelling body image problems?

A The primary culprit is social media in all its forms. Everyone is on the likes of Instagram and Tik Tok sharing their stories of a 'perfect life' and their 'perfect figure' and it’s mainly girls who are striving to live up to those ideals. But reality shows such as Love Island also have a huge negative impact. Throughout the duration of its airing, youngsters increasingly turn to fake tan, dieting, false lashes, acrylic nails, hair extensions and body building.

Not to mention the focus on body image in order to attract the opposite sex (in heterosexual relationships) rather than for themselves or their own self-worth, which is really heartbreaking to see.

Q What are the signs to look out for?

A I often see teenagers who are lethargic and unable to focus or concentrate, which has an adverse e ect on their schoolwork, as does their overall reluctance to converse or engage in lessons. When probed, it transpires that they often have not eaten

MANRAJ

breakfast or have been on social media researching 'how to get the look' or 'how to detox'. I've seen both girls and boys averse to eating lunch or worse – counting calories. The new guidelines to list calories on foods in eateries hasn't helped either. Coupled with this, in schools we see a lot of bullying of youngsters who don't look a certain way or are not wearing the on trend clothing, which adds to anxiety as well as low self esteem.

Q Are there any cultural di erences in the attitude towards body image?

A Very much so. Even between the Europeans and the Americans there are di erences with a huge focus on either the 'skinny' or 'Kardashian' look. South Asians measure beauty based on how skinny you are and how light your skin tone is, while Afro-Caribbeans recognise the beauty of curvaceous shapes. All of these ideals are confusing for youngsters, but overwhelmingly it’s the 'Barbie' or 'catwalk model' and 'television celebrities' look that girls try to emulate.

Q What impact is it having in schools?

A More and more, pupils are su ering from low self-esteem, which results in them being reluctant to take part in certain activities such as drama, sport or speaking in class. Much of this equates to depression and anxiety, which is far more prevalent than it was even 10 years ago. The fear of judgment and looking 'wrong' is an overriding feeling for many students.

Q How can parents and teachers support children to develop a healthy attitude towards their looks?

A Raising awareness that most of what they see on social media is filtered, cropped and photoshopped is a good starting point. And discussing the wider impact on society and their own futures by reinforcing that relationships are not based on looks alone is key. Children should be encouraged to accept themselves for who they are, rather than trying to become someone else's ideal by learning to accept and identify their own internal beauty such as personality traits and achievements, rather than just looks.

Q What improvements have been made and what else needs to be done?

A We need an even greater focus on mental health through lessons such as PSHCE. Unfortunately, all too often, teachers have to search for the information rather than it being on hand via government policies. There is insu cient funding in education allocated to the social issues surrounding body image and confidence. The media is not being held accountable enough for what it is portraying and the ease of access to harmful images and those which can be filtered isn't being monitored. Such images should come with a 'warning' or 'reality' versus 'altered'look so that it is clear that these are unrealistic expectations. And what is causing increasing concerns currently is the use of AI, which creates absolute 'fakery' in portrayals of the human physique. Where does fakery end and reality start?

A year to REMEMBER

The Head of She eld High School for Girls GDST reflects on a whole host of success stories

Another year has raced by at She eld Girls’ and it has been remarkable. We’ve experienced the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III. We’ve experienced every type of weather imaginable, with gale force winds, baking hot days and over a foot of snow in She eld in the middle of March, but none of this has slowed us down and our students have been as energetic and resourceful as ever in what has been an incredible 12 months for the school.

TOP INDEPENDENT SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THE NORTH

After celebrating last summer’s record breaking exam results with 80% A-level grades awarded at A* or A and 81% GCSE results at 7-9, in December 2022 we were named by The Sunday Times as the Top Independent Secondary School in the North, in recognition of our students’ phenomenal academic success, as well as their co-curricular and super-curricular achievements and activities. The award also recognises the school’s holistic approach to pastoral support and character education. In their annual ‘Parent Power’ School Guide, which combines and reviews the

results of both private and state schools across the UK, She eld Girls’ came out on top and I was just thrilled to see the positivity, hard work and innovation demonstrated by students and sta alike over the last couple of years recognised in this way.

TOP 10 RANKING OF UK INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS FOR VALUE

Just a few short months later and we were delighted to see the school’s successes reflected in The Daily Telegraph, in their June rating of independent school value across the UK. She eld High School for Girls was ranked 7th in the UK in the article, which analysed fee rates alongside academic results.

The paper drew comparisons with some of the most expensive schools in the country to demonstrate that many of the independent schools in the lower region for fees are in fact the top performing institutions in terms of academic outcomes.

In a time when many people are concerned about the economy and rising costs, it’s great to see the value of our unique o er at She eld Girls’ highlighted in this way, evidencing yet again that our girls-only

environment and the ability to provide such individual and nuanced education for girls from 4-18 has real advantages for our pupils and wider school community.

PREP SCHOOL OF THE YEAR SHORTLISTING FOR OUR INFANT AND JUNIOR SCHOOL

Adding to the accolades over the year, we have recently been shortlisted by the Independent Schools Awards for the Prep School of the Year category, recognising the innovation behind our Fusion Curriculum and the unique impact of our Girls of Steel programme of character education. We look forward to the results in autumn.

SFSS SPORTS PRIMARY OF THE YEAR

At a more local level the She eld Federation for School Sports named us as the Sports Primary of the Year. The award – which recognises schools who achieve overall sporting success as well as providing a wide range of opportunities – is testament to the hard work and commitment of our pupils and sta and the emphasis we place on the importance of both individual and team sports.

PHILANTHROPY AND SERVICE DAY

On Friday 7 July the whole school took a day away from timetabled lessons to focus on a topic that is integral to the ethos and values of the school: philanthropy and service.

Girls in the Infant School learnt about food banks, and considered di erent ways to spread positivity through Art, whilst the Juniors completed a project to design a future charity event.

Senior School pupils took on over a dozen di erent sessions including animal welfare at Heeley City Farm, social responsibility and legacy with the Royal British Legion, and environmental action as part of a food waste solutions project.

In the afternoon, guest speakers from Cavendish Cancer Care, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), NHS Blood and Transplant, LUSH and Africa’s Gift provided perspectives on how people can take action at an individual level to make a long lasting impact.

We are incredibly lucky to have a school bursting full of pupils who feel passionately about their local community and who show a philanthropic and caring mindset in their everyday behaviours. In line with our school values of positivity, courage and kindness, at She eld Girls’ our sense of service and community isn’t about a single special day, it’s about embedding ideas and principles that will last a lifetime.

CELEBRATION OF THE SCHOOL YEAR (COTSY)

As our school year drew to a close we came together at the Octagon Centre in She eld to celebrate the astonishing achievements of the year as a whole school.

Members of sta , student performers and our Head Girls Team worked together

to put on a full day of entertainment for our audience of hundreds of parents and families, governors, current and former sta , alumni and partners from the wider school community.

Student presentations and musical performances were followed by a presentation of the Schools Values Awards. Our Girls of Steel Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards were distributed amongst our Year 4-6 pupils, whilst students in the Senior School, having been voted for by teachers and peers, were presented with awards for courage, positivity and kindness.

This year’s event also included a little Hollywood magic, as alumnae and Assistant Director on the latest Mission Impossible films, Mary Boulding, joined us to share her experiences during and after her time at school, including the moment Tom Cruise called her to o er her a job.

It’s a new school year already, and I can’t wait to see what it has in store.

SUM OF ITSPARTS

For 300 years, our motto has been Res Non Verba – Deeds Not Words – and this ethos pervades every aspect of school life. Our engaging approach to learning treats students as individuals, while bringing subjects to life through guest speakers, exciting trips and meaningful work experience.

Students benefit from 100 di erent weekly clubs and activities designed to extend and enrich their lives throughout school to prepare them for their future. We truly believe that learning doesn’t only take place in the classroom, and that all children should have the opportunity to explore their passions. From SimGolf to rock climbing, choir to Warhammer,

students can discover new interests, talents, and hobbies each term.

As a school, we are aware that our families seek day-to-day flexibility, and we continuously review our o erings to keep up to date with the needs of our community. Our day and boarding school proudly extends not only to full and weekly boarding, but flexi-boarding from the age of 9. The term flexi-boarding captures a variety of options, all of which involve dining and sleeping at school, but not with the frequency or consistency of a full boarding student. It is a fantasticoption if a child needs to stay late at school for sport, drama or other activities one or two nights a week. This is a great opportunity for the student to spend more time studying in the library or socialising with friends, and it proves convenient if a work

commitment or a social engagement arises for a parent or guardian.

In the classroom, students continue to excel. In our exams last summer, 93% of students attained GCSE grades 4 to 9 in over 20 curricular areas. At A-Level, students achieved 100% A-Level pass rate across 17 subject areas with nearly half at A*, more than two-thirds at A*–A and nearly 80% at A*–B. Students progressed to universities such as Cambridge, Manchester, York, Exeter and Durham to read subjects ranging from law to medicine to avionics.

However, these impressive statistics mask a deeper truth: numbers cannot purport to properly represent young people, be it the sheer determination needed to study if not naturally academic or the bravery of a student who takes the first step o an abseil tower while on residential. Numbers tell us nothing about character, integrity, good humour or camaraderie. A Rishworth education is about all those and more.

How Tranby’s multi-faceted approach to education o ers their pupils a world of opportunity to succeed

At Tranby they provide a carefully judged blend of academic challenge, pastoral support and extracurricular opportunity amid the glorious surroundings of the historically significant Tranby Croft. They are committed to bringing out the best in everyone and have a ‘no ceilings’ approach to what their pupils can achieve.

Their class sizes are small, meaning teachers can give dedicated support to each pupil, drawing out their own interests and expertise and ensuring a level of di erentiated support that brings excellent results.

They provide an environment where every pupil can find their niche, flourish, and develop their confidence through an extensive co-curricular programme. At

Tranby they celebrate talent, not only in academic subjects, but also in the extracurricular achievements of their musicians, actors, artists, and sportsmen and women.

In the Sixth Form their class sizes are between 4 and 6 allowing a greater level of individualised support for students as well as a vibrant and discursive setting for the kind of high-level academic discussions essential at advanced level.

Children join them at various stages throughout the age groups and join a happy, family school where every individual is known and nurtured as such. The teaching sta at Tranby are all passionate subject specialists and inspire their pupils with a love of learning for its own sake and instil in them curiosity and a thirst for knowledge.

You are welcome to visit their Whole School Open Day on Saturday 30 September from 10am-1pm. This is the perfect opportunity to meet Headmistress, Alex Wilson, and Head of Prep, Cath Sweeting, along with sta and pupils

Community SPIRIT

Q How long have you been Head at your school and what originally attracted you to the role?

A Only since April 2023. I was attracted to Aysgarth initially because of its outstanding reputation. Once we had visited I was totally sold and nothing I have experienced in my first term has changed my views. It is an amazing school.

Q Describe your school’s setting and do you make full use of what is around you?

A Aysgarth is set quietly just outside Bedale on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. It is beautiful. However, with such a fast train to Edinburgh or London, I feel really connected to the wider UK. We are definitely outside more than we are in, playing sport, exploring our fields (the valley) or enjoying the walled garden.

Q If there was one thing that makes your school di erent, what would it be?

A Our community. This is my fifth prep school and I have never known anything like it. Pupils, sta , parents, former pupils and former parents all care so deeply for the school and take such a continued interest in what is going on. It is delightful to be a part of this and to continue to fling open the doors for them all.

Q What age groups does your school cover and how does the curriculum evolve through the ages?

A We are a 3-13 prep school that moves from specialist class teaching to specialist subject teaching around Year

5. Our leavers follow a genuine range of subjects that culminate in Common Entrance or Scholarship entrance to a vast array of senior schools.

Q How important is the cocurriculum at your school?

A Quite simply, it is vital. At Aysgarth, we do not shy away from the need to work hard. But our pupils need time

and space to have fun and explore other interests outside the classroom and we give them those chances in spades. Sport, music, the arts or simply free time are all on o er, and because we have long days and busy weeks and weekends, we make time for all of it.

Q Is pastoral care key at the school?

A I am blessed with a team of sta who care deeply about the pastoral care of our pupils. Without it, where would we be? Our pupils have a lovely rapport with the teachers and the atmosphere encourages them to talk whenever they need. Our tight-knit community looks out for people and is the bedrock of all that we accomplish together.

Q What boarding provisions do you o er and what kind of atmosphere would we find in the boarding houses?

A Aysgarth has a strong boarding tradition and our sta are experts in this aspect of school life. Our boarding house caters for many full boarders as well as weekly and regular boarders. The atmosphere is caring, busy and fun. Our matrons are wonderful and our evenings are relaxed and enjoyable. My sitting room is below some of the

dorms and it often sounds like a herd of elephants passing overhead, but it's just them having some fun time before bed.

Q Looking back at your first term, what would you say the highlights have been for you?

A We sent out a huge amount of teams with some extremely fine cricket being played. We toured to Oxford, sent trips to Cumbria and Cornwall, sent a choir to London and still found time to score excellent Common Entrance results. Sports Day was a wonderful, community occasion and Leavers Day brought our Year 8 pupils together with their parents for a fitting and poignant send-o . I say all of the above and haven't even scratched the surface!

Q What are you looking forward to when the new school year starts?

A Seeing everyone again. It will be lovely to begin a full academic year and to attack it with a much better understanding of the mechanisms of school life.

Q What do you prepare pupils for?

A Pupils leave us for the best senior schools in the UK. They are used to working hard and challenging themselves. They have varied experience of sports, arts and music but, possibly most importantly, they are community players with manners that make them an asset for their new schools and new friends. I am already incredibly proud of them. aysgarthschool.com

Way with WORDS

Karen Kilkenny, Head of Chapter House School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate, on how they ensure pupils enjoy reading

In Chapter House, literacy and learning is at the heart of everything we do. Time is made every day specifically to enjoy sharing a book together, and each class has a specific time to visit the Chapter House library. This allows them to choose a book they can take home to share with parents and siblings.

One of our most successful and popular initiatives has been the introduction of our reading dog, Indie, especially with our younger children. It has increased the confidence of reluctant readers by having a non-judgemental audience. The children are purely reading for pleasure with no-one pointing out mistakes or questioning them on the text. It is an initiative where we

have seen their confidence increase and their reading has become more animated, with more expression –one Year 1 child’s reading age has improved by two years over one term, and they are more curious about reading di erent texts. Throughout the school, we bring books to life to spark imaginations. One of the ways we do this is a whole school project around a single book, all age groups from nursery upwards completed mini projects, which were then shared with the rest of the school in an assembly. Children are also encouraged to create their own dioramas (three-dimensional models of a scene with characters), with dressing up and acting out their own versions of popular

books and poems, such as ‘that’s not my stick’ and ‘the naughty bus’.

Year 5 students are encouraged to be librarians, recommending books to their peers, create displays in the library and have the opportunity to share books with younger pupils. This vital engagement extends beyond the classroom with regular parent information meetings on reading, sharing new school initiatives and advice on how they can support their child with reading at home.

Chapter House is a vibrant and engaging school that focuses on providing an enabling environment which respects, recognises and tunes into each unique child; central to our mission of ensuring each child can be ‘the best they can be, with the gifts that they have’. We accept students with a range of abilities, skills and interests and ensure every child has an individual learning pathway, which is tailored specifically to them to ensure they have the most-e ective approach for their learning.

To find out more about Chapter House, visit one of their open mornings on 30 September or 18 November or visit their website at qe.org. Alternatively, feel free to email admissions@ qe.org to book a private tour.

As part of the end of year celebrations at Sheffield Girls’ GDST in July, over 60 Year 6 pupils were presented with their Girls of Steel Gold Award in recognition of them completing their junior fusion curriculum challenge portfolios, which are used to help pupils explore the school’s six core competencies within the character education programme.

This is just one element of a unique approach to education at the school. At Sheffield Girls’, their pupils are immersed in a purposeful environment, free from disruptive behaviour, where it is cool to work hard and do your best, which means the girls are enthusiastic and motivated in their learning. The learning is rigorous, but it is fun. Lessons are fast-paced with students engaged as active learners and they are delivered by inspirational teachers who are experts in their subjects and innovative in their approach. The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum that fosters curiosity and prioritises the development of skills alongside subject knowledge. sheffieldhighschool.org.uk

Aysgarth is a northern school with a national focus. They have an outstanding success rate of getting pupils to their school of choice. Their 2023 Leavers are leaving Yorkshire to go all over the UK. From September these boys will be at Eton, Fettes, Harrow, Giggleswick, St Peter’s York, Shrewsbury, Stowe, Ampleforth, Rugby, Repton, Sedbergh, Sherbourne, Marlborough and Oundle.

The school develops a passion for learning at an early age. When we asked Anna Brown, Head of Early Years at Aysgarth, how she hopes to inspire a love and appreciation for learning in the children, she responded by saying: “For me, it is about immersing

Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery

National Railway Museum’s largest new gallery in a decade opened at the end of July

The National Railway Museum’s largest new gallery in more than a decade has opened to the public after five years in development. Named Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery, it features 18 exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that aim to inspire and spark curiosity in visitors around the themes of railways and engineering.

Aimed at families with children aged 7-14 and school groups, the gallery is housed in the York museum’s 1,500m2 former locomotive workshop building next to Great Hall. Alongside the interactives, visitors will also be able to see live science shows and demonstrations inside the Weston Showspace and at a demonstration bar.

Judith McNicol, Director of the National Railway Museum, says: “Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery represents the first area of the museum to undergo significant changes as part of our Vision 2025 masterplan and the result is a fantastic new interactive gallery that is a real asset for visitors and the city.

“The gallery was developed in partnership with the rail industry and other experts and we have listened to visitor feedback about the need for more interactive, handson experiences. We want to ensure that children have great fun while developing a spark of interest in engineering that will contribute towards tackling the UK’s shortage in STEM skills.”

The opening day also saw the unveiling of a dramatic new permanent artwork by Steve Messam. Called ‘Mass’, the brightly coloured inflatable sculpture dominates the centre of the gallery at 12 metres high and 16 metres wide. Like a hot air balloon, the structure uses air under pressure to support itself.

Visitors will also be able to build and design large scale structures like bridges and towers in Pippa Hale’s ‘Play Revolution’. This colourful interactive artwork comprises large foam shapes that can be moved around the space encouraging visitors of all ages

to think like engineers. ‘Play Revolution’ is inspired by the museum’s archives and collections with input from children and young people from The Snappy Trust.

Visitors will be able to see a live science show as part of the general entry ticket. Fire Powered, an explosive and dramatic show will demonstrate how (safe) explosions can be created and controlled to make an engine work.

The 18 exhibits focus on di erent elements of railways and engineering and encourage people to think like engineers and develop skills as they design, build and test to produce di erent outcomes. Among highlights are ‘Feel the Force’ where visitors can enter a giant wind tunnel to learn about streamlining and ‘The Great Machine’, which encourages people to solve problems and create their own transport network.
