Editor's Letter eddings can be a divisive topic. Perhaps, like me, you don’t feel that woolly, rose-tinted sense of joy when an invite lands on the doormat. It’s not quite cynicism, but it’s close. And while it’s tempting to ignore the fact, there really is no denying that – to quote our columnist Ilana Fox (read her take on page 19) – wedding season is most definitely ‘A Thing’. With that in mind, suspend your cynicism for a little while and flip to page 23. Five local couples have each given us a peek at their wedding day and it’s really rather lovely. If that doesn’t raise even a half-smile, then perhaps our bumper spring fashion section might. The idea is that you don’t upstage the bride, but you can probably have some fun trying. Also in this issue is my interview with Rosalind Miller, the wedding cake impresario whose empire grew out of her Forest Hill kitchen and a

If you are getting married, keep in mind the words of Mignon McLaughlin: ‘a successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.’ That’s not something we can help you with, but we’ve got everything else covered. AMOR HEREOS
ARMANDO ALEMDAR ARA 5 - 24 April GX Gallery mor Hereos, which translated means ‘Elusive Love’, is an exhibition from Turkish artist Armando Alemdar Ara. His latest body of work expresses this concept through ‘celebrating forms that are corporeal and yet could also be a figment of imagination or a dream’. Indeed the dreamlike quality of his paintings sometimes obscures its subjects to the point of confusion however, one emotion

pervades and that is love, celebrated not as a process but as an end in and of itself. Ara has exhibited at GX Gallery over the past 12 years, years that have seen his highly original abstract style develop and evolve into something remarkable, best described as ‘modern, fresh and yet imbued with traditional Renaissance values.’
Making a return to the Cool Cats’ stage after an incredibly successful debut Will McNicol will be wowing the crowds with a selection of songs from his previous albums. Named Guitarist Magazine’s acoustic guitarist of the year in 2011 and with four albums under his belt, Will has received critical acclaim for his latest offering The Wake Up, so don’t miss this chance to hear it live and in person.

A Dulwich
After living in the area for almost twenty years, author and journalist James MacManus has figured out the ideal Dulwich day, here he invites Absolutely along for the ride...
orn and (pretty much) bred in Pimlico I arrived in Dulwich 18 years ago full of nervous alarm at what life might be like in that strange country called south of the river. We were lucky to find a house on the park side of Court Lane, which, with a huge garden, was perfect for young children and an easy commute to London Bridge for me. 18 years on and Dulwich has very much become home. In the mid 90s East Dulwich still hadn’t really arrived. Despite this, I now live in a flat at the top end of Lordship Lane that provides a panoramic view of London. And this area of Dulwich, like the rest of what we still proudly call our village, has been transformed into a beehive of shoppers and diners, a hub for young couples and the older generation alike, all of whom marvel or despair at the spiralling property prices. Having lived in Dulwich for many years now, I’d say I’ve pretty much formulated a perfect Dulwich day. And you should join me...

First breakfast. It’s just turned 9am and we drop in either on Luc’s on Lordship Lane or Pretty’s on North Cross Road. I prefer the latter where scrambled eggs on a slab of brown toast come with a generous garnish of salad of tomatoes. With a proper coffee this is £6.25. The weekly market is just setting up outside. Lisa Moss is there selling her jewellery and Hayley Redmond provides the glamour on her fudge stall. She claims fudge is an essential part of an organic, high fibre diet. Hmmm… We check out the vintage shop round the corner where Belinda and John are opening up their Aladdin’s cave of antique knick-knacks and collectibles. Belinda is helping me track down antique hour glasses, which for some strange reason I have begun to collect. Now up and over Sydenham Hill and down to the Kirkdale Bookshop.
Parking is tricky but try the street on the left just before the garage. This is a very good bookseller with, in the basement, the largest and best organised collection of second hand books in south London. I come across an anthology of essays, poems and stories from WW2. A bargain at £2 if only for the George Orwell’s defence of P.G Wodehouse and his wartime broadcasts from Berlin. Silly old duffer. Now for a treat: the Horniman Museum and its 16 acres of gardens are a treasure of which Dulwich, I fear, does not take advantage. OK, there is no parking. Try round the back on Westwood Park, where there is plenty of legal parking and you can walk through the gardens to the museum. There is a lot going on here and all free except for the

It’s small and wonderful – kids just love watching the Postman Butterflies feeding on sliced oranges in the Amazon forest tableau. Back down the hill, we swing left on the South Circular and head for sleepy West Dulwich. Here Sheila O’Reilly presides over Dulwich Books home, apart from the obvious, of some inspiring weekly author talks. Right across the road is a Dulwich secret, Da Porcina, a family run Italian restaurant better and cheaper (dare I say it?) than many eateries in Lordship Lane. A proper lunch is £14 for 2 courses. At this stage caffeine craving kicks in. We go to the Au Ciel Café on Calton Avenue in the Village. This is a mumsy haven where a proper fresh cup of coffee is around £2.10. Now, next door to Village Books. There’s always a feast of reading
in the window and within Julian, Hazel or Tracey will listen to what you are looking for and come up with the right book. I must admit, I can’t help but enjoy seeing my new one on the shelves – prepare now for a shameless plug – Black Venus is a novel about Charles Baudelaire and his mistress; passion, poetry, Paris and plenty of 19th century wickedness, perfect weekend reading. Round the corner, along the parade and into Mr Brian Green’s stationers. Here we buy for a mere £5 his illustrated history of Dulwich in WW2. It is superbly informative, especially for the young who want to get a handle on what happened here in those dark days. Mr Green is our very own historian. He knows the site of every bomb and rocket

that fell on Dulwich in the war and helped organise the placing of 22 stainless steel memorials which name those killed in the attacks. Now we take a brisk walk once round Dulwich Park (I hardly need describe the joys therein but don’t miss the magnificent flowering of the rhododendrons in May). Then through the College Road gates across the street into the Christ Chapel grounds there to marvel at Louise Simson’s remarkable sculpture of Edward Alleyn reaching out to a child. Very moving. Back to the Village and time for a quick half of beer. It’s coming up to noon and people are sitting outside the Dog, as we call it, in the first warm day of spring. The Crown and Greyhound is a grand old Victorian pub with decent grub and a crazy quiz night on Sundays. And now for Lordship Lane, which has become so fashionable we are expecting Waitrose to arrive any minute. First to Moxons, where Paul Earles and team sell really fresh fish. Filets of mackerel overnight from Cornwall are perfect. Over the road a queue stretches out from William Rose, the butchers. I sometime think that at

midnight on New Year’s Eve there will still be a queue outside William Rose. And then a treat: Franklin’s farm shop where Tim Sheehan and his bounteous ladies dispense an organic cornucopia. Three shops up is another local secret, Karavan Eco a treasure trove of green goodies. I buy pretty striped bamboo socks; yes bamboo, much softer and stronger than cotton and much more environmentally friendly. And, so to lunch and a glass of wine. There are endless restaurants in and around Dulwich and as for wine, when I arrived all those years ago there was not a vintners in Lordship Lane, now there are three. After all these years I know one thing about this very special part of London – it’ll long continue be the site of my perfect day. Black Venus is out now; Duckworth Press

Well read Sheila O’Reilly and the team at Dulwich Books recommend their selection of sensational reads – enjoy! THE TRUTH ABOUT THE HARRY QUEBERT AFFAIR by Joël Dicker t’s a love story, it’s a thriller, its funny in parts and most of all it is a superb debut novel that will have you gripped for all 688 pages. An adolescent Harry Quebert spends a summer falling in love with fifteen-yearold Nola Kellergan. Nola, however, goes missing that same summer. Thirty-three years later her body is dug up from Harry’s yard, along with a manuscript copy of his career-defining novel. Quebert is the only suspect. Marcus Goldman - Quebert’s most gifted protege throws off his writer’s block to clear his mentor’s name. Solving the case and penning a new bestseller soon blur together. As his book begins to take on a life of its own, the nation is

gripped by the mystery of ‘The Girl Who Touched the Heart of America’. The exchanges between Marcus and his mother are very entertaining, and Dicker captures the quality of her voice wonderfully. The translation is fantastic, ensuring that none of the feeling and style of the French edition is lost. I urge you to read just one page of this book, you will not want to put it down. by Rachel Seiffert et largely in Glasgow this is a beautifully written and utterly compelling novel from Man Booker Shortlist author Rachel Seiffert. It is a novel about history and family and the ties that bind a person to their life. We alternately follow the stories of young couple Lindsey and Graham in the 1990s and their son Stevie ‘now or thereabouts’. Seiffert has a real gift for the capturing the Glaswegian lilt of the characters and as you read, they seem to speak out loud in your mind. As the plot develops she gently brings in the more dangerous characters and unveils them slowly, so that over time their sinister natures become clear. It has been a few years since Rachel’s last book, The Walk Home however, shows it is worth the wait. Sure to do big things in 2014.

AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED by Khaled Hosseini rom the author that brought us The Kite Runner, this is another triumph set in Afghanistan, 1952. Abdullah and his sister Pari live in the small village of Shadbagh. To Abdullah, Pari, as

beautiful and sweet-natured as the fairy for which she was named, is everything. More like a parent than a brother, Abdullah will do anything for her, even trading his only pair of shoes for a feather for her treasured collection. Each night they sleep together in their cot, their skulls touching, their limbs tangled. One day the siblings journey across the desert to Kabul with their father. Pari and Abdullah have no sense of the fate that awaits them there, or how the event which unfolds will tear their lives apart. Whilst Hosseini no longer lives in Afghanistan, he writes vividly about life there, addressing the issues of his native land with a level of tact and feeling that really breathes life into the characters. OUT FOXED Hello, my name is Ilana and I’m addicted to East Dulwich. It’s chronic – to the extent that I feel uneasy outside of SE22. Yep, I get the shakes when I leave the confines of our neighbourhood.
I
’ve never been sure about how I feel about weddings. On the one hand, yes they’re beautiful, they’re a celebration of love and commitment and togetherness. But the pessimist in me isn’t persuaded: I’ve never really been convinced that partnerships can last a lifetime. Should you let them, weddings can cost a fortune that I think would be better invested in property rather than a party - although going by East Dulwich prices you wouldn’t get much bang for your buck. A friend of mine is getting married next year and she’s become Bridezilla: she avidly watches Say Yes to the Dress to get ideas about what she wants to wear (current thinking: a lace, tulle, mermaid dress that’s not too mermaidy, tulley or lacy) she scours the internet for wedding venues and she’s begged me to help write her vows. Which is sweet, of course, but I’m the last person to ask: I’m the biggest cynic going, not least because the concept of love confuses me. To try to clarify matters I pretended to be Haddaway and asked my Facebook friends ‘what is love?’ Answers ranged from ‘passion’ to ‘giddiness’ to ‘respect’ to ‘peacefulness’, and while I agree with all of these, they also confused me. If there are so many types of love, how do you know which one is the one you should lock down? And should you even do it? I realise I’m in the minority. I’ve never fantasised about getting married, never dreamed of having a big white dress, and can think of nothing worse than showing off the fact that I’ve met someone who wants to spend the rest of their life with me. For me, love and commitment are intensely private: marriage shouldn’t be about putting on a party and pretending to be a princess for the day. I know I should grin and bear it – weddings are most definitely ‘A Thing’ and I’m willing to be persuaded that I’m wrong. But when I do tell people that I’m not a fan of weddings (which, by the way, is not a good idea to do when you’re a bridesmaid – lesson learned!) I get looks of pity and am told that I’ll change my mind; that I’ll be swept off my feet and will be subscribing to bridal magazines before I know it. The thing is, I know that will never happen. To be true to myself I can’t follow convention. I’m definitely not a sheep. In the words of Haddaway, baby don’t herd me...

Absolutely: How would you describe the book to a reader? Rachel Seiffert: It’s about a runaway looking for home. Stevie, the main character, is a 17-year-old boy from Glasgow; he’s cut his ties with his family, but he’s cut himself adrift in the process. The book tells the story of his childhood: about his Dad’s close-knit Glasgow tribe, who Stevie has tried to leave behind, and about his Mum too, who ran away for love, and to get away from Ireland during the Troubles. Stevie’s family are a series of runaways really; everyone in the novel is looking for that safe place, that better place, that feeling of belonging. But life gets in the way. Prejudice, history, fear of change. They love each other dearly, but can they make it work?
Family
SAGA
Rachel Seiffert’s new novel, The Walk Home, is a compelling and layered story of one Glaswegian family, an exploration of the ties that bind them to one another and keep them tethered to a collective past. Here the East Dulwich local tells Absolutely what inspires her to write and reveals the hobby that, after seven years of working on the novel, kept her from hitting the whiskey.
AB: What drew you to the subject matter? RS: I wanted to write a book about home. At heart, the book is about family and belonging. Glasgow was home to me for many years and it’s a city full of stories. People have come from all over to make their lives there, raise their families. Highlanders, Italians, Chinese, and of course Irish, Catholics and Protestants. Out of that mix springs conflict, the influence of the Troubles and the noise and colour of Orange Marches. But it also brings with it so many intriguing human stories; the kind I love to hear and tell. I suppose it could have been set anywhere contested: from the West Bank, to a Peckham housing estate. But I’d had Glasgow characters in mind for a long time, [and they were] waiting for a book. AB: You write the Glaswegian accent really well, was that difficult to do or did it come naturally? Why did you choose to write the Scottish characters in this way? RS: I enjoy the Glasgow patter very much. It’s a talkative city, people are inventive with language, very sharp and witty with it, and I wanted some of that energy in the book, in Stevie’s family. It was a challenge to get it right, and make it easy for my readers to slip into those rhythms. But that process helped bring me close to my characters. They had to speak the way I heard them in my head; they had to be as real for my readers as they were for me. AB: Which came first, the characters or the plot? RS: The characters came first, I had them chatting away in my head for a good few years. But characters only really come alive through stories, so creating a tight and satisfying plot for them to inhabit was equally important. Can Stevie’s Dad

change? Will his Mum stay? Will Stevie make it home in the end? Books are for readers, and stories are what keep the pages turning. AB: What it your writing routine? RS: I keep office hours, I’m very disciplined about it. When I had kids many people told me I’d never write again but I take J.G. Ballard as my role model: father of three and single parent, but prolific novelist. He advocated a large whiskey after the school run...I haven’t gone that far yet. Knitting is my tip: keeping your motor functions occupied allows the higher functions to get whirring. The Walk Home was written between drop-off and pickup, and over the course of many hand-knitted socks. AB: When did you know that you wanted to be a writer? RS: I used to work in film. I started out as an editing room dogsbody, but I didn’t want to be stuck there, so I tried my hand at writing. My film scripts were more like short stories, then the stories got longer and became my first novel, so I moved away from film in the process. But I took the discipline of the cutting room with me. In cinema, not a moment of storytelling time is wasted, and I like my books to have that same drive.
AB: What do you love most about being a writer? RS: I’m very curious about people, what makes them tick, and the experiences that form them. So it’s a gift that I get time to think about people, invent scenarios for them to inhabit. AB: What have you found most challenging? RS: To make what you write excellent, you have to be your own harshest critic (and I am!). But a novel is a work of persistence, so you also have to be your own greatest advocate as well, keeping yourself going through all the doubts and drafts.
History is at its most interesting from the bottom up, because then it’s all life stories; it’s a way of understanding people, what frightens them, or pushes them onwards... AB: Religion, family and history are all very prominently explored in the novel, was that your intention from the start or are they threads that came out as you were writing? RS: They’re all sources for stories; they are the drivers for my characters. The people in the book were voices first, or versions of Glasgow folk I’d met; they came fully alive as I looked at the times they’d lived through. History is at its most interesting from the bottom up, because then it’s all life stories; it’s a way of understanding people, what frightens them, or pushes them onwards. AB: Did this novel surprise you in any way? RS: I never expected it to take so long! My daughter was one when I started, and if someone had told
me I’d still be writing it when she turned seven, I might have thrown in the towel. But Stevie and his family caught hold of me, I had to tell their story, and a novel just takes as long as it takes. I got it right in the end; it’s one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done. AB: So in total, how long did it take? And how many drafts? RS: About seven years, all told. I’ve lost count of the drafts. I threw everything away and started from scratch twice. The second time I discarded over 200,000 words, so that was very painful. But I had to boil it down to the core story before I could be satisfied with it. The final book is a distilled version, about 75, 000 [words]. But word count isn’t important, it’s drive. I wanted to give my readers that ‘I have to find out what happens next’ experience. AB: Did you draw inspiration from any other books? RS: I kept going back to Toni Morrison’s A Mercy. Her characters pass the plot on from hand to hand, and it’s done seamlessly; she never drops the story for a second, although it’s told from many different perspectives. I wanted the same for The Walk Home. AB: Do you have a favourite author? If so who? RS: I go through phases but Toni Morrison is enduring, and George Orwell. 1984 is a political allegory, but it works because it’s a love story too. The best books engage both the head and the heart. AB: What are you working on at the moment? RS: A new novel: a love story set in Germany, running from the First World War to the end of the Second. I’m back in the Third Reich/ Holocaust territory of my first book The Dark Room, and looking at my own family’s story. AB: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? RS: Find that small, stubborn part of you inside, and then persist, persist, persist... The Walk Home is out now, £14.99; Virago

Anna and James Donnelly The Facts When & where: October 2013, St Andrew’s Church in Thornton Heath followed by a reception at the Selsdon Park Hotel and Golf Club in Surrey. Guests: 64 for the wedding breakfast and an additional 20 guests for the evening reception. It took us around 3 months to plan the wedding
The Memorable Bits Anna: Accidentally burning a hole in my dress the night before the wedding was pretty memorable! But also our guests not handling the Polish vodka tradition too well and showing off their ‘skills’ on the dance floor in the evening. James: My favourite part of the wedding was hearing all the nice things said about us during the speeches. Also Anna’s speech in Polish which most didn’t understand but for some reason it made the whole room cry.
The Tips
Kelly and Mark Knight
Pull in all the favours you can. You will be surprised by how willing your friends are to help and how much money you could save. Make a decision and stick to it! Once you decide, stop looking around. It will only confuse you. Anna: I really wish I had explored the option of buying secondhand/renting a wedding gown instead of buying a new one - it’s a good money saver!
The Facts When & where: June 2012 at Beauberry House (now Belair House). Guests: 86 day guests and an additional 100 evening guests. It took us around 4 months to plan the wedding
The Memorable Bits Kelly: The funniest part of the day was when the registrar asked if anyone knew any reason why we shouldn’t be married, Mark glared back at everyone with such a cheeky look, everyone couldn’t help but laugh. Mark: My favourite part of the day was when Kelly walked into the ceremony room, she looked so stunning in her dress and hair looked amazing. Kelly planned most of the wedding and even though she talked through her ideas with me, I hadn’t realised how much attention to detail she had to put into planning everything.
The Tips Make sure you work out your finances before you start planning. We downloaded a very detailed budget planner, which factored in everything from venue to underwear costs. Speak to your suppliers and make sure you read reviews as it’s very difficult to substitute services in the event of a no show. Try and have a proper honeymoon straight after the wedding.

Jane and Danny Smith The Facts When & where: July 2013 at Beauberry House (now Belair House) Guests: 19 during the day and approximately 80 in the evening. It took us around 6 months to plan the wedding
The Memorable Bits Jane: My highlight of the day was the fantastic weather that we had, 32 degrees! And one particularly funny moment was when the door of the vintage taxi that took my dad and me to the venue flung open whilst we were driving. We were shouting at the driver to alert him but he couldn’t hear us. We were all ok though, thankfully. Danny: The highlight for me was when the Maserati turned up to take me to the venue...only (half) joking! Of course, it was when I first caught a glimpse of my bride. Sharing the day with family and seeing all of the friends who turned up from far and wide to bless our day was very special.
The Tips Try and use suppliers, especially photographers and florists, who have previously worked on weddings at the same venue. Try not to get too stressed about the day. Trust us, it’ll all come together!

Nikki and Ed O’Donnell The Facts When & where: July 2013 at Beauberry House (now Belair House). Guests: 70 at the ceremony and 40 more for the evening reception. It took us just over a year to plan the wedding.
The Memorable Bits Ed: I loved the ceremony itself and the special feeling of being married. Walking out to the confetti and the best mans speech, were great moments. Above everything else was when I turned to look up the aisle and saw Nikki, looking stunning, I just remember thinking ‘wow’. Both: One of our favourite parts of the day was dancing to the band during the evening reception. We had a live band playing into the early hours and guests had written their favourite songs on the RSVP cards, so everyone had their favourite song to dance to.
The Tips A friend said to us ‘decide what is most important to you and ensure that these areas are perfect. Everything else will fall into place’, I’d give anyone the same advice.
Marian and Jeremy Heap The Facts When & where: July 2013 at the Horniman Museum & Gardens Conservatory (Marian grew-up in Peckham and attended art classes at the museum in her school holidays, so the Horniman has always been a special place.) Guests: 90 It took us around 18 months to plan the wedding.
The Memorable Bits Jeremy: It’s a toss up between standing at the front of the conservatory and turning to see my soon-to-be wife looking like the most beautiful woman in the world, and getting to sit in the driver’s seat of the doubledecker bus that took us to the reception. I think seeing my bride just edges it! Both: There was a last-minute glitch with the CD player and Marian ended up walking in to the wrong bit of music - it really didn’t matter though and we’ve laughed about it since! We walked out to the theme from the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (as planned) which raised a smile.
The Tips Work out the things that are most important to you, and stick to them! I wanted an informal dress to match our day and found a bargain in Monsoon. This meant we could splash out on other things such as flowers - Fran at the Fresh Flower Company (East Dulwich) did a wonderful job with the vintage cottage garden brief. Make sure that you build in time to relax the week before the wedding - you’ll need it.

PERFECT DAY
They say that for a bride and groom, the wedding goes by in a blur. Pictures, then, take on a special significance, bringing into focus the woolly, Champagne memories of the big day. Here Absolutely speaks to Dulwich photography duo extraordinaire Nicky and Keith Sheriff about the unique challenges of shooting weddings and about their tips on finding the perfect photographer.
Q: How long have you been doing wedding photography? A: Over 10 years now. Q: How would you describe your style? A: We have a very relaxed, reportage approach to wedding photography. We aim to shoot in a documentary style. Lots of our shots are taken on a long lens, so the bride, groom and their guests are unaware they are being photographed. This will enable us to capture funny or special moments while remaining unobtrusive. Q: What are the most difficult conditions you’ve had to shoot in? A: We can shoot in all conditions, that’s your job as a wedding photographer, to be adaptable. Generally speaking, very bright sunny days can be a little harder to shoot as you get harsher shadows, though these are
the days that every couple hopes for! Of course, it can prove a little tricky to work outside on very windy or rainy days but in all the years we’ve photographed weddings we have only had two when it has rained all day.
Q: What is your favourite part of a wedding to shoot? A: We really enjoy photographing the speeches. The bride, groom and their guests are generally sitting, looking up and laughing (hopefully!). This part of the day always makes for wonderful shots that really capture peoples’ emotions and personalities. Q: If you were hiring a photographer for your own wedding, what would you look out for? A: We would most definitely look for someone who had substantial experience, not just as a professional photographer but of working at weddings too. We have many professional photographer friends who would never dream of photographing a wedding. We would always suggest that you ask to see as many examples of a wedding photographer’s work as possible. Ask to see a complete wedding, not just a few snaps from one job. You spend the whole day with your wedding
MARK ALLAN
A picture
sea) or paintballing in it. Some of these brides do all sorts of amazing things. We would love to shoot something like that, though no one has ever asked!
Q: What has been your most memorable moment so far? A: There are many moments that stand out for various reasons but one that springs to mind is the time we photographed a wedding on a farm. Keith was recovering from a broken leg and found it hard to get up his ladders for the group shot. So, the bride’s father (the farmer) threw Keith in his brand new tractor scoop and raised him up in the air for a better view. Bit scary for Keith but funny for everyone else. Q: What are the challenges of wedding photography? A: There are many challenges to wedding photography but the overriding one is that you can’t reshoot a wedding, you must get it right on the day. This means that it’s so important to stay completely focused. Q: Are there trends in wedding photography? A: Yes certainly, like anything else there are trends that come and go. For a long time now there has been a move away from traditional posed shots and more towards capturing the spontaneous, fun moments. A really interesting recent trend is called ‘Trash The Dress’. Brides do a second shoot after their wedding, wearing their dress and either diving into a swimming pool (or into the
photographer and they will be a part of your day so it’s important that you like them and feel comfortable with them photographing you. We would advise that you meet your wedding photographer before you actually book them. We always encourage clients to visit us at the studio prior to booking. We are very transparent with our pricing but every photographer prices themselves differently, so it can be difficult to understand what you’re getting for your money. Always ask for a full breakdown and presume nothing. One common mistake is that wedding couples will book a package that provides them with a DVD of images and are often disappointed when they discover the photos are all low-resolution files that you can’t print from. All our wedding packages include a DVD of printable high-resolution images. shotbythesheriff.co.uk

ABSOLUTELY COLUMNIST LAWRENCE ROULLIER WHITE TALKS WEDDING SCENTS FOR THE BRIDE AND GROOM
ou have spent months agonising over the dress, the shoes, the veil and the jewellery, do not let the fragrance you wear on your big day be a last minute decision, something you spray on your way out of the door. Your wedding scent will recall the most romantic of memories each time you wear it, so spend a little time making sure you get it right and select something you will want to travel with you along the journey of married life. A carefully selected fragrance makes a unique and very personal, emotionally evocative gift for your bridesmaids and seeking out luxury fragrances from artisan perfumers is not only fun but it provides a wealth of small talk for those inevitably awkward moments at the wedding with people you have possibly never met. By their very nature the perfumes likely to be chosen as wedding fragrances tend not to be too overpowering, typically white florals work
Y

well. Allegedly Kate Middleton selected British brand Illuminum’s White Gardenia Petals (1) for her wedding. This very modern, clean light floral is an excellent choice, elegant and understated. Another fragrance with connections to royal romance is Atkinson’s 1799 Nuptial Bouquet (2), an interpretation of Queen Victoria’s bridal bouquet; the green and white of lily of the valley and violet leaves with pretty myrtle flowers. Perhaps the most romantic wedding fragrance is Creed’s Fleurissimo (3), which Prince Rainier commissioned for his wedding to Grace Kelly. The trendsetting Rainier – along with the Creed family – designed the scent to replicate the Princess-to-be’s corsage. Grossmith’s Floral Veil (4) is another sophisticated floral with a vanilla heart and delightful cashmere base which is worth investigating.
5
One thing to remember when using luxury fragrances; the more expensive they are then the more likely they are to have a high percentage of natural ingredients. Most essential oils are not transparent and if you are not careful they will stain your clothes. Once you have selected your fragrance take it home and spray it on a cleanly ironed flat white cotton handkerchief, leave it to dry and then hold it up to the light. This way you are able to assess any potential risk to your dress. If you have been given the advice to spray perfume into the air and to walk through the mist then ignore it! Not only could this stain your clothes, but also most perfumes are at least 70% alcohol and you do not want to put this on your face or hair. The only way to apply perfume is to your pulse points, behind you ears, in the crook of your elbow and behind your knees. It is also worth remembering that if you are selecting a new
fragrance it might not work on your skin. In the same way that some people are allergic to strawberries, which is no fault of the strawberry, some perfume ingredients may provoke a reaction. Once you have purchased your perfume test it a few times over a month – allowing for the fact that hormonal changes affect allergies – and at the time of day you will be wearing the scent. You do not want to be a blotchy bride so remember this invaluable tip. My advice for the groom would be always to stick with a traditional eau de Cologne, with bright citrus top notes and a herby middle. Typically eaux de Cologne do not last for hours and in an environment which may be hot and sticky they can be refreshingly reapplied. More complex masculine scents in very warm environments may breakdown leaving a somewhat over bearing musky base that can smell almost stale, the key is to keep it light. My suggestions would be the sensational Hierbas de Ibiza (5) or Atkinson’s 1799 utterly sublime 24 Old Bond Street (6). Roullier White, 125 Lordship Lane, SE22; roullierwhite.com

MARK ANDERSON AT HOME IN WEST DULWICH
e’ve all been burned by a bad haircut. The kind that makes you cringe every time you look in the mirror, the kind that makes you avoid the mirror all together. The problem is, of course, that under those hot lights in the salon, with a harried stylist running ragged between two or three clients, you can’t always find your voice in time. Before you know it, you’re on the pavement, £100 down and six inches shorn, when you only ever wanted two. The search for a good cut and colour often ends up being more a search for someone who understands you, who speaks your language, it’s a rapport that’s difficult to form in forty-five minutes and so you either stick to the same person, (because better the devil you know, right?) or you hop from stylist to stylist, each of whom gets it not quite perfect, but better luck next time. And that is often the crucial issue: time. Those women with luxuriant manes - the Duchess of Cambridges or Gwyneth Paltrows - have stylists who spend time, proper time, getting to know their subjects. My interest, then, was piqued when I began hearing about this new hairdresser in Dulwich. The whispers were that he spent hours with you, going through options, ideas, he gave you his opinion, you gave him yours, you came to an understanding and then he cut your hair without a mirror. ‘But, but,’ I spluttered to my friend ‘what if you don’t like it?’ ‘It doesn’t happen,’ she looked at me resolutely. ‘You’re so clear about what you’re getting at the end of the consultation that it feels really...safe.’ I had to meet him.

BACKSTAGE AT VERSUS SHOW IN NEW YORK, KATE MOSS
Working from his beautifully furnished Dulwich home, Mark Anderson welcomes me in one rainy Tuesday afternoon. Born and raised in Glasgow - ‘I went to an all boys Catholic school, they suspended me twice because of my hair, and eventually expelled me at 15’ - he still has that soft Scottish lilt. Animated and quick to laugh, his home seems an amalgam of his past: colourful, fashionable, bright. The walls are hung with artworks, including one particularly striking picture of Gisele (‘it’s one that I styled, ages ago,’ he explains) and dotted around are art books, fashion books, photography books, tomes and tomes of them ‘for inspiration when clients come in,’ he tells me. Beginning his career from the very moment that he was expelled from school, Mark went on to live and work in New York, then in London. He built his profile as a session stylist by working with everyone from Princess Rania of Jordan to Yoko Ono. ‘It was an amazing time, I saw the world, the very best bits of it. I had some truly wonderful experiences.’ And these experiences form much of our chat, from being the only stylist on site brave enough to dye Alexander McQueen’s hair before a big show (‘he was a very intense guy, so talented, it was such an honour’)

to fooling the paparazzi at one of the biggest celebrity weddings probably ever, he is wonderfully loquacious and endlessly funny. ‘Eventually, though, you start to value other things, I felt as if I was living to work,’ he explains when I ask what prompted the move to Dulwich. This house in West Dulwich, with it’s calm and homey vibe seems like it strikes the work/ life balance well. ‘Most of my clients come to me, here at home, we have a drink, we put on some music. I like to create a nice atmosphere for people to spend time in...I get them to stand in front of the mirror and tell me what they like and what they don’t like then I make some suggestions based on what they’ve told me. Everyone goes to the mirror before they come in here, because once we begin cutting, there’s no mirror. We agree, we trust, we sit and the magic happens.’ Bringing his experience as a session stylist, he works on a cut that is bespoke to each person, focusing on their angles and proportions as well as their desires. ‘Tilda Swinton is referenced a lot, and Michelle Williams, people come in thinking that they’d never be able to
work one of those [shorter, more masculine] cuts but we find ways - I alter it slightly, maybe soften it a little. It’s never impossible.’ Spend enough time with Mark and you’ll probably also begin to think that nothing’s impossible because his passion for what he does has that infectious quality to it. In his home, without the buzz of a salon you feel at ease to explain what you need. As I’m leaving, though, I can’t help but wonder how it is for him to have strangers invading his space, often for hours at a time. He laughs, ‘it’s a gift! I work with mothers and housewives, artists, architects, neuroscientists, designers, people in finance in the City. Each one is so interesting that I can’t help but enjoy welcoming them into my home.’ And I, for one, couldn’t help but enjoy being there. markandersonhair.co.uk

s a Pilates? Is it boxing? No! It’s both! Weirdly. Or not so weirdly, depending on how you look at it. Apparently combining the two disciplines burns fat and tones muscle as well as giving you a killer aerobic workout. Weighted boxing gloves are worn throughout and the powerful, quick exercises of boxing are combined with the sculpting and flexing poses of pilates. The whole class is set to pumping music. Guaranteed to leave you with that post-exercise high.

Tr e n d a l e r t : ORANGE LIPSTICK Lipstick trends are always a difficult one to call: will it be one of those ‘looks great on the catwalk but will never work in the office,’ ones or one of those (admittedly, fewer) that prove to be wearable as well as fashion-forward? Orange lipstick was big news on the SS14 catwalks, here are three of our favourites that we think could be the latter:

The burpee is the ultimate full body exercise. There is a reason that football teams, CrossFit practitioners and military forces all use it in their workouts. It is a strength training exercise and with each repetition, you’ll work your chest, arms, front deltoids, thighs, hamstrings and abs. A great one to burn fat! 1 Stand on the floor with your feet shoulder-width apart and your toes and knees pointing forward. 2 From starting position go down into a very low squat and place your hands on the floor in front of your feet. 3 Now, put your hands flat on the floor and lean forward so that you distribute your body weight into your arms and simultaneously kick your legs back so that you are in a pressup position. 4 Immediately reverse the movement and return into the squat. 5 From the squat position jump up as high as you can. Repeat this process, going as fast as you can.

Alexandra Jones indulges her sweet tooth and profiles Brockley’s Rosalind Miller, two-time Wedding Cake Designer of the Year
or some people cake is a serious business. The ones who eat the whole slice, lick the spoon, scrape the plate, then look longingly for a second. The ones who dream of light-as-air Swiss meringue buttercream or slabs of moist chocolate sponge, that is as dark as midnight in the country. For these people (alright, people like me) a wedding is nothing without the cake. And for that reason, these people – cake connoisseurs, bon vivants, sugar addicts, gluttons, call them what you will – often end up at the door of Rosalind Miller. The two-time Wedding Cake Designer of the Year (2012 & 2013) has built a dazzling reputation for creating cakes that are works of sugary art. Beginning her career in textile design, Miller moved into communication design, opening her own agency as well as spending ten years lecturing at Central Saint Martin’s. It is this design expertise, the trained and honed artistic eye, that has given Miller her USP: using ever-evolving techniques to create cakes that are as in-tune with current design mores as they are with wedding trends. ‘I’ve done lots of different things really. But it wasn’t until my hours at Central Saint Martin’s were reduced that I thought about baking. I’d been to New York and seen the cupcakes at the Magnolia Bakery years before. Anyway,

my mum used to do sugar craft, making flowers and things for cakes and I just thought it would be nice to combine the two: beautiful sugar flowers with the cupcakes.’ Opening a stall with her sister at Greenwich market, they named the venture ‘Peggy’s Cupcakes’, after their mother, and baked everything in the kitchen at Rosalind’s Forest Hill home. The success of the cupcakes meant that the sisters quickly outgrew the space (‘I actually extended my house’ explains Miller) and the workload became too much to handle in their spare time. When even the extension wouldn’t suffice, Miller hired a workspace in Brockley, focusing more on wedding and celebration cakes – ‘I thought cupcakes were going to be a fad,’ she tells me wryly – and Peggy’s Cupcakes became just Rosalind Miller Cakes. When I turn up at her door – on a newly built street (twice she has to give directions to lost delivery men whose sat navs have been gazumped by the postcode) – I am reduced to breathless delight. No, I’m not exaggerating. The smell
GOLDEN EMBROIDERY CAKE
My mum taught me how to bake and if you know the basics, it’s not rocket science. It is science but it’s not rocket science of cakes baking wafts out into the crisp spring morning, an aroma so heady and inviting that it practically carries me into the workshop leaving Miller, handoutstretched at the door. ‘Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Smells so good,’ I venture as a greeting, to which she seems quite pleased. Warm and funny, she exudes an air of calm practicality that I imagine makes her success with flustered bride and grooms-to-be. She gives me a tour of the kitchen – ‘I was just making some chocolate icing, hazard of the job’ she explains of the smear on her apron – at the back of the open plan space from which she runs all aspects of the business, including the masterclasses in which she trains new generations of budding bakers. The shelves are filled with decorated wedding cakes, many featuring beautiful (astoundingly life-like) flowers and tumbled-down petals, which Miller explains are from her new collection for 2014. ‘We’re doing our latest line in
the same way that a fashion designer might. We’ve got a ‘couture’ range, which is top-end pricing and completely bespoke and we’ve also got a ‘readyto-wear’ range, which is more accessible in terms of price, with perhaps a little less detailing.’ In this her design background is obvious. Often asked for designs which are broadly inkeeping with what is happening in the fashion world (‘year before last it was all ruffles, last year metallics, now it’s very very

floral’), the ability to read trends, she explains, has been a real asset to the business. Having said this, she offers me a fresh-baked cupcake to which she speedily adds some fresh-made icing. It has none of the frills of her usual work but it really doesn’t need it because the taste is stellar. Not bad for an – in her words – amateur baker. ‘Of course the taste is important, but I’ve never had any formal training.’ After some initial experimentation with recipes for the cupcakes, Miller and her sister settled on one that
ABOUT TO GET MARRIED? HERE ARE ROSALIND’S TOP TIPS FOR FINDING THE PERFECT CAKE DESIGNER…

Do your research. Find someone whose style you like. There are so many styles but a lot of cake designers will just blindly follow one, so have a good look at the website, at other cakes that they’ve done then go and visit a few of your favourites. Make sure you taste the cake, it’ll be the ultimate disappointment if you’ve booked just on sight and it turns out to be bad. It’s quite important to work with someone that you’ll like. It’s the same as having a dress or suit made for you: you want to know that they’re going to do the best for you.

has since become ‘the basis for everything. And, actually, that recipe was from a book that my mum gave when I left home at 18! My mum taught me to bake and if you know the basics, it’s not rocket science. It is science but it’s not rocket science,’ she tells me matter of factly. The most popular flavour is vanilla, ‘because it’s safe’, though increasingly people have been requesting raspberry with vanilla.

SPRING FLOWERS CAKE
Be aware that it’s a very competitive business. It has relatively low start-up costs so lots of people try their hand. Have a good plan in place for the first year or two. Go to a class and learn as much as you can. A lot of cake makers hold classes just like we do. Be original!
‘I’ll tell you what isn’t popular, Miller leans in conspiratorially, ‘fruitcake. I don’t even bother getting it out. People might do a small tier of fruitcake for the top, so they can save it for the first anniversary or when the baby is born, but apart from that, no one wants it.’ I tell Miller that I love fruitcake, that it would be my choice, in fact I get rather animated in my defence of it. ‘I’m with you, I like fruitcake and we do a beautiful fruitcake, with all the fruit soaked in cognac.’ Talk of flavours and icing takes on a life of its own, because I’m one of those gluttonous cake lovers who takes these things seriously and because it is Miller’s business to take these things seriously. I lament the demise of fruitcake like a true addict and as an afterthought mention that it’s probably not a particularly healthy passion. ‘Well, it’s original,’ says Miller thoughtfully. ‘And after all, that’s what got me here, originality and passion.’ So perhaps there’s hope for me yet. Alexandra Jones does Eastern European tapas in SE1
pened at the end of last year, the Topolski Bar & Café occupies what used to be the Topolski Century art bunker. It’s likely that if you’ve ever had any dealings around Waterloo, you’ll know the onetime studio space of 20th Century expressionist artist Feliks Topolski well, though may have never been inside. It’s certainly worth going now. Furnished with mid-mod, exposedmetal tables and chairs that allow the artist’s works to take centre stage, the feel is pared back industrialism (though happily, it doesn’t labour the point, as sometimes happens in more self-conscious places). I took a friend in the evening and as you might expect from somewhere that positions itself as a ‘bar and café’, the atmosphere is dark and buzzy. Lots of plates clattering, glasses clinking and music turned
O
a little too high. The crowd is young, fun and animated (probably by one too many infused vodkas) which is a testament to the fact that this is a ‘good time’ place. You can come, have a drink, have a bite and enjoy a friend’s company safe in the knowledge that if your voice gets a little too loud, you won’t be any more disruptive to your fellow diners than the crowds at the bar. The food also caters to a busy, buzzy crowd with a menu centred on sharing platters and small plates. How much you’ll enjoy it, though, depends on two things: firstly, do you like Eastern European food (or at least food with pretentions towards Eastern Europe)? Secondly, do you like to share? Luckily I adore both so I wasn’t disappointed with the tapas-style dishes, though my friend griped that he was getting much too drunk much too quickly. On the
menu, a well-thought-out selection of meats, cheeses and deliciously piquant pickles sits alongside small plates including salt-baked beetroot with beetroot tops and goats curd, and smouldered bacon with heritage potatoes and poached Black Mountain egg. The cob chicken and roasted garlic terrine with apple and grape salad is a particular success, as is the goulash, with its hearty deep beef flavour and the satisfying hunk of bread that it comes with. Make no mistake, this is Eastern Europe by way of East London but the flavours are strong and smoky. Having said all of this, in the main Topolski is a social space. Somewhere to sit with friends and have a few infused vodkas (my favourite was the horseradish one, safer flavours are available) and as such the drinks menu is the star, small but interesting. Perfect post-work fare. 150-152 Hungerford Arches, Concert Hall Approach, SE1 8XU; 020 7620 0627; bartopolski.co.uk

Feeding Frenzy nother month, another batch of South East London foodie openings to report on. Firstly we recommend you head to Camberwell for new gastro-pub sensation, the Camberwell Arms. Opened mid-February, the décor is as homey as the food is fantastic, thanks no doubt to head chef Mike Davies, previously of Frank’s Café. Owned by the people behind the Anchor & Hope (Waterloo), it’s worth checking it out now, before words spreads too wide and the queues (they operate a no booking system) become unmanageable. Then a hop and a skip south to Herne Hill where Brixton Cake Shop opened a new outpost at the end of March. Delighting locals with its partyready cakes and pastries, we’ve already picked out a two-tier lovely for our next birthday. If only gluttony wasn’t a sin.

1 In a pan of boiling water simmer the broccoli for 5 minutes until tender then drain and set aside, keeping it warm. Cook the rice according to the pack instructions. While it’s cooking tear the chicken into strips. 2 To make the dressing heat the oil in a pan and gently cook the shallots, garlic and chilli for 2-3 minutes until they are nicely soft but not brown. Add the soy sauce, mint and chicken and warm through. 3 In a serving dish combine the broccoli, rice and chicken mixing well. Scatter a few extra mint leaves on top.
WHY NOT TRY: For a veggie version replace the chicken with roasted cashew nuts.

It really is hard to choose just three from the twelve homes featured in the book because they are all so different, and all very striking in their own way. From a colourful Californian house filled with mid-century modern ceramics and stunning DIY projects to a pared-back, monochrome apartment in Amsterdam, the 12 homes all stand out to me for different reasons.
JILL MACNAIR’S EAST DULWICH LIVING ROOM
I was particularly fond of Jill Macnair’s (of the blog My Friend’s House) East Dulwich home. It’s the perfect blend of vintage and modern, and her taste is right up my street. She has two young children and is living proof that with a bit of creativity, you can create a practical, family home that’s ultra-stylish, too.

Another home that I love was Maria Carr’s (of the blog Dreamy Whites) ranch home in rural California. When we visited to shoot it, she baked us fresh bread and the setting was idyllic, but it was her clever decorating skills that made a big impression on me - despite the fact that her home is a new-build kit house, by incorporating antique finds and worn, aged elements such as old doors and shutters with interesting patinas and textures, she’s managed to make it feel like a grand French château!

Similarly, Desiree Groenendal (of the blog Vosges Paris) has transformed her small Amsterdam flat into a spacious, loft-like, airy apartment, by cunningly removing door frames, knocking down internal walls, exposing concrete panels on the walls and sticking to a monochrome scheme throughout.
These inspiring bloggers demonstrate that with some imagination and hard graft, you can create the home of your dreams wherever you live.’ ellietennant.com myfriendshouse.wordpress.com dreamywhites.blogspot.co.uk vosgesparis.blogspot.co.uk

Gilpin Lake House GEORGIE LANE-GODFREY INDULGES IN A ROMANTIC RETREAT TO THE LAKE DISTRICT
T H E R E S TA U R A N T
THE HOTEL Just two miles from Lake Windermere, the family-run Gilpin Lake House is a perfect base for exploring the Lake District. Surrounded by varied trails, taking in charmingly traditional pubs (many with their own microbreweries), it is a wonderful destination for walkers, not least because they’ll have the roaring sitting room fire to look forward to, after an afternoon, exploring. Personal touches here make the difference – staff will find you wellies, lend you maps and recommend routes so that you make the most of your stay.
After a private transfer up to the main hotel, you can look forward to some seriously fine dining for dinner. Having been awarded three rosettes by the AA Restaurant Guide, Head Chef Dan Grigg serves up local Lake District produce and West Coast seafood to create modern British masterpieces – think line-caught mackerel, sauced beets, apple compressions and horseradish bark.
THE ROOMS All rooms at the Lake House are suites and, with just six on offer, stays here are not only exceptionally exclusive but totally private too. All with quintessentially British names, high-end cosiness is the order of the day and bathrooms are stocked with home made Jetty Spa products. If you can, stay in Harriet, the most decadent room with lake views.
THE DAMAGE From £485 per room, per night, including a five course dinner, full English breakfast and VAT, plus complimentary chauffeur to and from Gilpin Hotel for dinner. The ‘Jetty Spa Trail’ is exclusive to guests staying at Gilpin Lake House, £300 for two people. 01539 488 818; thegilpin.co.uk

Cross Road Of the
WORLD
Helen Baron on the many faces of Turkey’s most exciting city
he travel writers of old generally came to Istanbul (or Constantinople, as it was then known) by sea, and began their accounts with rapturous descriptions of the view of the city from the water. Alas, the modern traveller is much more likely to arrive by air, and though the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport is by no means the worst in the world, the subsequent journey into town is a dispiriting one: miles of concrete sidings and choked motorway await. If you arrive as my partner and I did, under an evening sky as heavy and dark as smoke, the effect can be forbidding. The key is not to allow yourself to feel too underwhelmed too quickly, for while Istanbul may not always prove easy (aesthetically or otherwise), it nonetheless turns out to be a singular
T
city, a place of incredible scale and unexpected collisions that leaves a lasting impression few other destinations can match. To stay here even for a few days is to have expectations bulldozed and fascinating new insights installed in their place. The first clue that Istanbul isn’t all cement and dreary shop signs comes as our car (a luxurious, chauffeur-driven Merc provided by our hotel) crawls off the crowded highway and into the northern fringe of Beyoğlu. This section of the city lies on Istanbul’s European shore, divided from its Asian counterpart by the dark waters of the Bosphorus. General opinion holds that Beyoğlu is the forward-thinking, cosmopolitan heart of the ‘modern’ city, and it’s here we’re staying, at the Marti Hotel, a dazzling high-rise set moments away from
the famous Taksim Square. Hotels of such size can sometimes lack charm, but the Marti’s dimensions serve an important purpose: it’s only from our corner suite on the ninth floor that my companion and I get a real measure of the scale of the city outside. The arid motorway is forgotten as we look out over a sprawl of glittering lights and jumbled buildings, the chaotic skyline parting here and there to reveal a moonlit minaret. The itch to explore sets in, but it’s late, so we decide to test the room service menu before venturing into the metropolis tomorrow. It’s a wise move: the food is fantastic, combining classic hotel comfort grub with fresh, flavoursome Turkish ingredients, and the vast bed and hammam shower are just what’s needed to refresh our travel-depleted complexions.

travel
Several hours of blissful beauty sleep later, and after a hearty buffet breakfast in the hotel’s elegant restaurant, we’re crossing the flagstones of Taksim Square en route to Beyoğlu’s southern quarter, Galata. The city is bright and alive around us, and I’m struck with the notion that this is how London must seem to many foreign visitors – a huge, working city that welcomes tourists but is (refreshingly) too busy to pander to them. On every corner and in every backstreet, sitting at cafe tables, congregating at flower stalls, haggling over the price of electronics and groceries and sports shoes and spices, are the people of Istanbul, an indescribably various and vital bunch. We weave a path through and among them unnoticed, if not unseen. To be clear: it’s not that this is an unfriendly city – the service is routinely charming and attentive at every coffee house, cocktail bar, shop and restaurant we visit (as well as at our five-star base camp, of course). But this is a cultural, economic and geographical hub that is still, after thousands of years, in the process of building and rebuilding itself, constantly revising itself upwards and outwards. There is an energy and industry here that seems to outstrip anything witnessed further west – and while tourism plays an important part in this process, this is no Paris or Rome, where every aspect of life in the city centre seems to cater to travellers and their wallets. Istanbul offers something more real and raw and unvarnished: a kind of unsentimental honesty, perhaps, that is seriously refreshing. Exploring on foot is the way to go. Many of the modern guidebooks suggest that the best way to see the city is by taxi, thanks to cheap fares and the sometimes punishing steepness of the hills on which the streets have long been laid. But alongside and perhaps even above the famous tourist landmarks, the best of Istanbul seems to crop up on forgotten sidestreets and around unassuming corners. Our several rambles down through Beyoğlu to Galata revealed warrens of streets where antiquated workshops and modern, independent boutiques sat side by side, and where ancient, ivy-clad towers stood crumbling above graffiti murals. By night, Galata is a buzzing hub for the city’s young and interesting, with bars and hotels like Litera (Yeniçarşi Caddesi - an avenue
of foodie winners) and Büyük Londra (Mesrutiyet Caddesi) providing good food, great cocktails and a lively atmosphere. There are enticing restaurants in abundance on the sidestreets surrounding the main shopping thoroughfare, İstiklâl Caddesi, which even on a Tuesday evening was filled with friendly revellers. Further south lies the Golden Horn, another marine inlet, this one separating Galata from Sultanahmet, Istanbul’s famous Old Town. Cross the utilitarian immensity of the Galata Bridge, passing the hundreds of anglers lining its rails, and you find yourself in the shadow of the New Mosque. It’s one of the grandest of the
nearly 3,000 that pepper the city, but it’s not the best of the bunch. Venture further into the winding streets of Sultanahmet, through the worldfamous Spice Market with its array of colourful wares; through the Grand Bazaar, home of Turkish products of every description, from art and jewellery to linens and carpets (not all of them impressive by any means), and eventually you’ll emerge at the city’s southernmost tip, where sit the Hagia Sophia (a former Greek Orthodox church and Muslim mosque, now a museum) and the Blue Mosque (a working 17th century mosque) like two stately grand-dames. The splendour of their assembled towers and gardens is difficult to describe – and the queues to enter can be off-putting – but even just wandering around the grounds reminds you of the impact such sights must have had on the travellers of yesteryear, unable to have preconceived them beyond the odd painting or illustration in a book. It’s in Sultanahmet that the majesty of Istanbul’s long and colourful history is most keenly felt, not least in the Basilica Cistern, a vast underground chamber built by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century and still standing today. A walk around its echoing, watery vaults is a must; it’s just a shame they’ve put a cafe at one end of it. Then again, perhaps Istanbul is better for such incongruities. While the city certainly contains a great many wonders (many on a breathtaking scale), the demanding business of everyday survival seems to prevent their dominating the life of the city overmuch. They are instead part of a much larger and more various living picture – one it’s essential you see for yourself.

NEW MODEL COOL
I
AN INNOVATIVE SECONDARY IN SOUTH EAST LONDON IS FAST BECOMING ONE OF THE LEADING LIGHTS OF THE FREE SCHOOL MOVEMENT, REPORTS AMANDA CONSTANCE
t’s ‘one of the country’s most impressive and forwardthinking free schools’, according to Rachel Wolf, Director of the New Schools Network; Lord Adonis, the former schools minister says: ‘The teachers and staff are passionate about the importance of education, and they combine their passion with great professionalism and skill.’ The Evening Standard has cited it as one of London’s top five ‘new model’ schools with its ‘relentless focus on standards’. On Ofsted’s Parent View website 100% of responding parents saying they would recommend the school to others. So what is so great about Greenwich Free School? ‘The teachers here are all fantastically hard working,’ says Sarah Jones, current acting head of the school and one of its cofounders. ‘They love their subject and they pass that excitement about learning on to the children.’ Jones also says that because GFS is a free school, ‘we can go above and beyond the national curriculum’.
Greenwich Free School has a tough ‘high expectations, no excuses, no shortcuts’ ethos’
This means educational school trips every fortnight and a teaching syllabus that can stray into areas left untouched by other schools. ‘We’re doing Philosophy at the moment, discussing Utilitarianism!’ Jones declares with unqualified glee. Since opening its doors in September 2012, GFS has been different. Firstly it is much smaller than the average inner-city secondary school. When it reaches full capacity by 2018 there will be 700 pupils (including 200 in the sixth from), other locals schools average 1140 pupils. With only 25 pupils in a class and only 100 pupils per year, teachers really get to know the pupils and vice versa. There is also a tough ‘high expectations, no excuses, no shortcuts’ ethos that applies to children and staff. Pupils are banned from bringing their mobile phones into school, uniform is smart and behaviour strictly policed. The school also operates on an extended day. School starts at 8am and finishes at 5.30pm. The last hour of the
day of the day is spent on ‘enrichment’ activities such as debating, Latin or sport; the school claims its pupils will spend a third more time learning than most children. Academically, the school follows a rigorous ‘depth before breadth’ curriculum giving pupils more time to master the fundamentals of Maths, English and Science. And as well as classic ‘academic’ subjects such as Latin, pupils from Year 7 have lessons in PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) and ICT is replaced by ‘Computer Science and Enterprise’, teaching pupils to master commercially valuable technical skills. It couldn’t be more up Michael Gove’s street. Which isn’t surprising as GFS was the brainchild of the rightleaning think tank Policy Exchange, which itself was co-founded by Michael Gove. Jonathan Simons, current head of Education at Policy Exchange and now Chair of Governors at GFS was one of the schools co-founders. Sarah Jones said the idea for the school came to her after going through the Teach First programme (a Labour government initiative which saw top graduates recruited to teach in challenging schools) and teaching in Greenwich for all of her career. She loved the area, ‘but I had become frustrated by aspects of the education system – like not being able to take children out on an educational field trip and not having enough time in the day on any given subject for pupils who were struggling.’ One of the key things for her was the extended day Learning for the joy of learning seems to be fundamental to the GFS ethos. As Jones says: ‘We care about more than just exams. Every lesson should be exciting, challenging and different.’ It’s not all been plain sailing. The much-lauded founding head, Lee Faith, left the school in December after just a couple of years ‘to pursue other things’. Jones insists it’s not been a problem but it must have been disruptive at best. The new head, Oliver Knight, will start at Easter. The school is obviously doing something right. It’s already very oversubscribed, and not just by pupils. ‘We have been very lucky with recruitment,’ says Jones. ‘Teachers want to work here because it is different and because our kids are so great.’ But how do you get great kids? ‘By having great teaching,’ she laughs.

FOOD for THOUGHT e’ve always known that the girls at Sydenham High were an enterprising lot and recently a group of Year 7s put their savvy heads together to help the Lewisham Foodbank. Not only did they raise £70 as part of this term’s ‘How hard can it be?’ enrichment programme, but they then doubled their offering by approaching business for donations. Birchall’s agreed to donate dozens of boxes of their lovely teas and Sainsbury’s Savacentre in Sydenham matched the girls’ shopping funds so they were able to buy double the amount of key food items. ‘It’s wonderful what these girls have done on their own initiative,’ said Luke Aylward of Lewisham Foodbank. ‘We are very grateful for these fantastic donations and want to thank everyone concerned. We hope their action will inspire others to help as well because we rely on donations to support those in genuine crisis.’

HOUSE HUNTING
Julia Russell Sales Negotiator at Wooster & Stock, Nunhead
 020 7708 6700; woosterstock.co.uk
The most satisfying transaction I’ve had… Was selling a large house in a Georgian Square owned by two eccentric ladies who spoke in unison and travelled the world extensively together. Their house had been left to them by their uncle some 40 years previously and they knew everything that went on in the neighbourhood, not a curtain twitched without them knowing. We found them a lady who matched their enthusiasm for the house, the local cats and the history of the area. She took on the house, its renovation and I believe that they are fi rm friends to this day!
Most interesting property I’ve been involved with… A detached house with gothic windows on a beautiful street in Camberwell. Th is was one of the fi rst houses built around the end of the 18th century and it is reputed to have been owned by a lord who entertained the Prince of Wales on his way to Brighton. There were nights of cards and debauchery and in the morning they would jump on their horses and depart, no doubt leaving a few broken hearts and glasses behind! The property I’d most like on our books is… On a hill to the south of Camberwell. It has a driveway partially shrouded by trees and an enticing portico with a fanlight and a glimpse of a glass dome on the roof. Obviously a delight to anyone looking for a sleeping beauty! Most unusual interior… Would be that of the house that used to be the garage of the old Camberwell omnibus now a star attraction in the transport museum. It has a great air of grandeur with the double height ceilings and the original doors.

T
he SE London sales market continues to be buoyant with an unprecedented amount of buyers registering their interest to purchase across all price ranges. Although we have seen a recent increase in the number of properties coming available, the supply is still not meeting the demand, and prices seem to continue to be on an upward trend. Some areas in Lambeth and Lewisham have already seen a 20% increase in the past year, and this inclination seems set to continue throughout the rest of 2014. We are having astounding success on open days, with the majority selling for asking price or over. On a few occasions we have managed to get numbers up to as many as 100 viewings in a day! If you are interested in selling please contact one of our property experts to arrange a free valuation, as we have in excess of 2000 applicants registered and actively seeking to purchase a property in your area.

oy Brooks became a legend in his own time for the puckish delight he took in telling the truth, the whole truth – and even the unwholesome truth- about properties, that, as an estate agent, he advertised for sale. Each month we will showcase one of these revolutionary, outrageous, funny and, on occasions, painful advertisements.

oy Brooks are pleased to announce their new office opening in Nunhead. The doors were opened on March 1st and the fi rst weeks have been a great success. After the staff total grew to 12, it was time to look further afield than their East Dulwich office. Th is is Nunhead’s fi rst local high street estate agency, which coincides with the current rejuvenation taking place in the area. With over £1,000,000, plus £130,000 from the Mayor’s Pocket Park Fund invested to improve the green, it is the new hot spot in London! Felicity Blair discusses why she loves Nunhead: ‘Nunhead has that lovely bespoke, hand-made feel, with its Committees in place to create community events for markets, music, art and fi lm. The high street has got everything you need and will soon have
more, yet it is in zone 2. “Fish-lovers have been travelling to Sopers for years. Ayres Baker sells delicious home-baked bread and cakes, HA Smith Butchers has a loyal following, while F Rudd will provide your vegetables. Bambuni is a fi rst rate deli and coffee shop. Wendy at AG Flowers is the ONLY place to go for the loveliest hand-tied bouquets, gifts and cards the other shops. As for hair and beauty, you are utterly spoiled for choice. The Old Nun’s Head is a fabulous pub on Nunhead Green, with an open fi re, music nights and a good restaurant. It’s also home to Pull the Other One, South east London’s very own, once monthly Jongleurs, and there’s also The Ivy House, which is London’s fi rst cooperatively owned Pub. In short, Nunhead has it all!

s the housing market is increasingly attracting investors to either own one or multiple homes, the lenders are becoming more competitive in the in the buy-to-let market. Many landlords on high variable rates are remortgaging to lower rate fi xed rate deals. Th is enables landlords to plan with more certainty for the future without the risk of escalating interest rates. Many buy-to-let lenders are reducing their up front fees, providing free valuations and legal fees as well as offering competitive interest rates. With the increases in house prices landlords are also remortgaging to free up capital to invest further in their property portfolio. Seek advice from your professional advisor to source the most suitable deal in the market.

P
roperty professionals could sometimes be forgiven for crawling back under their duvets rather than skipping into their bathrooms, eager to shower, shave (perhaps men only) and to get to work. After all, aren’t the High Streets in trouble? Isn’t online shopping killing off retailers left, right
and centre? Whilst the convenience of online shopping cannot be underestimated, we should surely be able to safeguard the future of ‘proper shops’ in some way? It is difficult to explain why seeing, touching, and even smelling books is all part of the shopping experience, and for all its benefits, online shopping cannot replace that. However, it appears that a breath of fresh air is starting to permeate our High Streets in the shape of Metro bank. It has just opened its 26th store in Epsom Surrey and is aiming for 200 stores in the next few years. The bank’s focus is fi rmly on customer service, in the form of extended opening hours and having stores open seven days a week. Maybe skipping to the bathroom in the morning is about to become more popular!

orn in the Philippines, raised by an Argentine mother and English father, and having lived my life in the regional mixing pots of Buenos Aires and Amsterdam, I have always felt well schooled in gauging an area’s vibe and character. Having spent a good deal of my formative years in the area, when I moved back here and into agency 11 years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to find the area to be as vibrant and diverse as anywhere I had lived before. Over the last decade, the area has continued to see influxes of communities from Europe, Asia and Africa, making this one of the most dynamic and interesting areas to live and work – not to mention to eat. While the debate still rages as to whether the changes (and as some describe, gentrification) of Brixton is for the better, I stand firmly on the side of welcoming the improvements in public space, and amenities for all residents. Having been involved in, or party to, many of the existing and future redevelopment initiatives, we have seen a vision for the area come to fruition and are extremely excited about what is still to come. Planned changes to the area will make Brixton a vital hub in the wider area, thereby aiding the improvements of the surrounding neighbourhoods. This excites me
as a resident and in my capacity as adviser to homebuyers and those wishing to invest in the area, both financially and socially. Ultimately, the regeneration of Windrush Square and the revival of the markets are what have stirred people’s curiosity and placed Brixton on the map. After opening one’s eyes to what the area has to offer, investment funds have been made available for many further development projects that will see its standing further improve over the coming years. While increases in house prices of up to 35% in some pockets of Brixton over the last twelve months would appear hard to repeat, the increase in investor numbers looking to implement further local improvements of all scales, from national and local firms to individual homeowners are sure to continue to drive the area on its upward trajectory for many years to come. Living in an area that is changing as constantly as Brixton keeps you on your toes, but I am very thankful for the opportunity to have known the area in its many stages of evolution, and I look forward to the future developments with great hopes.

Utterly awesome 6 (5 DOUBLE) bed Edwardian semi in catchment for Fairlawn Primary School. Around 3,000 sq. ft. and over 100ft garden. Overground links at Honor Oak Park. Edwardian homes offer more space and light than comparable Victorian properties but this one is even bigger and brighter than many its age. Added to an initial framework of extra high ceilings, wide rooms and large windows is quite possibly the best attic conversion anyone could carve from this cavernous home. It’s been generously laden with windows, is fluidly designed and has been spared a cheap, rushed finish.

A fine selection of state schools in Crystal Palace means that there’s plenty of choice. With a 2 month old daughter at home we are looking at Nurseries, the offering is excellent.

It’s a toss-up between the National Sports Centre and the Triangle’s dangerously good pub and bar selection. There’s something for everyone on both counts, a bike home is sensible!

he Dulwich Friends of St Christopher’s Hospice are holding an auction of promises at 7.30pm on 9th May at Dulwich & Sydenham Golf Club. There will be some incredible gifts and promises, including a box for the Cirque du Soleil’s performance at the O2 and a number of upmarket holiday homes. The hospice is a neighbour to our Sydenham office and is a cause very close to our – and the community’s - hearts. With only one third of their funding coming via the NHS, our support is essential to achieve their core care services, which are accessed by over 3,000 people each year, in their wards and in the community. www.stchristophers.org.uk

SE London’s hottest properties Have you ever wondered why so many of SE London’s hottest properties are with Pedder? Maybe it’s down to our dominance on the high street. Perhaps it’s our office network and extensive web coverage which means more details get in front of more people. Or maybe its because our eight offices work as a team. It all means that hot homes get the best possible exposure – great news for sellers and landlords.
