In fact, this issue is packed with stellar names, from the marvellous gowns of Sassi Holford featured in our sumptuous Savoy fashion shoot (from page 21) to an interview with iconic RTW designer – and ambassador for the London design scene – Amanda Wakeley, now celebrating the 25th year of her luxury lifestyle brand (page 32). We have a whole host of beautiful dresses to inspire you (from page 39), with shoes, jewellery and fine accessories in the mix, and three glorious real weddings that show impeccable style down the aisle. The team at Absolutely Weddings will be out and about over the spring and summer finding out about launches, news and events, so don’t forget to check in to our website at absolutely-weddings.co.uk to read our updates on the wonderful world of bridal. And we hope to see you at some of the great events we’ll be attending – including the Spring/Sumer Quintessentially Atelier at the venerable Dorchester (pages 58-59) – we do hope you can join us. Shape shifters:

The wedding coat Whimsical and romantic, Jean Patou’s iconic 1967 wedding coat drew on influences from history, folklore and Hollywood epics, capturing a new romantic zeitgeist and becoming a major influence on later bridal trends FA S H I O N M O M E N T S : J E A N PAT O U

W

e remember fashion of the 1960s as space age, with high hemlines and futuristic materials predominating in both mainstream and bridal garments. Yet some of the most influential designs of the decade drew inspiration from history. Jean Patou’s maxi coat of 1967 is an iconic example and has been singled out by fashion curator and author Eleanor Thompson as one of 50 key influencers or “flash points” of modern bridal couture. The design was very simple at first glance, but the construction and details set it apart. Made in pure white silk zibeline, a heavy silk with twill weave, it had the addition of delicate mink trim to hem, collar and cuffs. Despite the weight of the fabric, the overall look was flowing high glamour – conjuring a winter wonderland bride, alluring and mysterious under her sculptural long coat. As Eleanor Thompson notes, Patou had tapped into a new mood sparked, at least in part, by the fashionable bride’s interest in Hollywood treatments of romance. In particular, Dr Zhivago (1965) reawakened interest in period fashions, while Camelot (1967) recreated the Arthurian court (using some artistic licence in costumes and setting). Both these blockbusters told

epic love stories, with the action played out against dramatic and snowy landscapes. Their British-born stars – Julie Christie and Vanessa Redgrave respectively – were already fashion icons and wore exquisite garments. Both films picked up Oscars for costume design. These two films are credited with also reviving fashion interest in fur trimmings, hoods, muffs and military-style frog fastenings. The transition from Hollywood to haute couture continued on into pop culture – in 1969 Lulu wore a memorable hooded and mink-trimmed wedding coat for her marriage to Maurice Gibb. In contrast to the many versions of this winter wonderland look that followed, Patou’s prototype is, as Eleanor Thompson puts it, “a masterclass in understated elegance”. With a slim fitting front, concealed fastenings and neat flapped pockets, it incorporates a train at the back of the coat falling in elegant folds from the shoulder. A fine example of haute couture craft, it remains an iconic design, both for its construction and for setting a new romantic tone in bridalwear. u

Glamour Guru With fans ranging from the Duchess of Cambridge to Angelina Jolie, Amanda Wakeley defines a very contemporary fashion aesthetic that marries high glamour and cool. Absolutely Weddings meets the designer who says true style is always empowering WO R D S : L I B BY N O R M A N

A

manda Wakeley has an international reputation for easy glamour and impeccable tailoring and is a stellar ambassador for British fashion, dressing royals, film stars and – of course – elegant brides. The brand is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and yet the signature is as fresh and current as it was when the world sat up and took note of clothes created by a twenty-something ingénue designer for Diana, Princess of Wales. A diverse and glamorous rollcall continues to showcase the pared back aesthetic that is her trademark – the Duchess of Cambridge, Angelina Jolie and Maria Sharapova among them. Tracey Emin (also a friend) has described her as: “really cutting-edge with colour”, while Kelly Hoppen has said her clothes are: “designed for women’s bodies”. For Amanda, there is no magic; it’s a skill: “I design garments to be empowering and chic. They are

created to be luxurious and also kind to the wearer, and that always comes down to great cut and internal construction”. The bridal line adheres to the same design signature, with clean and contemporary lines that flatter the wearer. The Amanda Wakeley bride wears the dress and not the other way around – and that requires both a clear vision and precision tailoring. While she is celebrated for this mastery of tailoring, Amanda Wakeley is self-taught. Her childhood in Cheshire was a playground of wild sewing experiments. Previous interviews have talked about a dressing-up box of cast-offs from two glamorous grandmothers. “I had a very tolerant mother who didn’t mind me chopping up and customising old clothes. All the time I was working out how things were made. I was trying to understand fit, structure and how clothes embrace the body. Tailoring is very technical – very 3D”. This early passion for making continued

WEDDINGS TRENDS

through her schooldays. At Cheltenham Ladies' College, she had a small business sideline creating clothes for her friends. Along the way, Amanda discovered she had a natural entrepreneurial streak and an innate love of fashion, so after a spell working in a menswear shop, she went to work in the US fashion industry. It was on her return to the UK that Amanda spotted a distinct gap in the market. “It was a clean, glamorous and sporty aesthetic that was ingrained in US fashion that seemed to be missing over here, so I would make or adapt clothes that matched the look I liked. I would wear these pieces in key fashion places like Browns and people would stop me to ask where I’d bought them. This made me think there was an opportunity.” Amanda describes what happened next as more of a hunch than a strategic plan: “I was in my twenties, I was bold – I thought I must be right”. The Amanda Wakeley label opened for business in 1990 in a studio in Chelsea, with garments made to order. Without a backer, she was relying on her confidence, talent and a certain amount of good fortune to fi nd an audience. This came in the shape of then UK Vogue deputy editor Anna Harvey, who was assisting Princess Diana with her clothes buying. “It was all very informal,” says Amanda. “She was advising her and thought my style and design aesthetic might be right and that we’d probably get along – and we did”. A huge supporter of British design talent, Princess Diana was also a fantastic mannequin so the Amanda Wakeley name soon became widely known. The label won many more high-profi le clients and some top fashion accolades, including the British Fashion Award for Glamour three times in the 1990s. Other memorable landmarks included the cover for November 1998 Vogue – Kate Moss with scraped-back hair in a fabulous black strapless gown and the irresistible coverline for all would-be partygoers: ‘Return of the glamorous evening dress’. Weathering the economic storms of the early to mid 2000s, Amanda kept focus. By the end of the decade she had expanded the label into new areas, including the US, Middle East and Australia. The progression into bridal was natural, timely for the market and in tune with an already peerless reputation for high-glamour

“My brides are looking for clothes that make them feel both glamorous and cool” eveningwear. While glamorous gowns are a vital part of the mix, increasingly the Amanda Wakeley brand focus is on the “luxury lifestyle”. That means dressing women not just for the wedding, banquet or awards ceremony, but for every day – work, the school run, casual dinner party. “It’s about ease,” says Amanda. “So that might mean a pair of leather joggers and a cashmere sweater – there’s huge demand

34 Weddings_MARCH16 AMANDA WAKELEY.indd 39

among my clients for a style of dressing that works with their everyday lives”. This luxe vision has come to life in her Draycott Avenue emporium, where the focus is on separates that combine superb fabrics with impeccable cut and comfort. This store joins the existing line-up: boutiques in Harvey Nichols stores, RTW flagship in Albermarle Street and elegant standalone bridal store in Chelsea. Of course, bridal is high glamour – not every day – and there are yards of fabulous gowns that work for everything from ballroom spectacular to a hip boho or beach celebration. Amanda Wakeley brides can be sure that their gown will never waver from her fashion philosophy: “Every gown has our design signature. Our look is about lightweight, sensual and elegant garments for the modern woman”. Bridal is only one part of the Amanda Wakeley luxe vision, but it’s a pretty good introduction. She has now dressed two generations of the world’s most stylish women, and always with an utterly simple mission: “My brides – all the women who wear Amanda Wakeley – are looking for clothes that make them feel both glamorous and cool”. ◆ AMANDA WAKELEY, 175-177 Fulham Road, SW3 amandawakeley.com

While many brides store their gown as a

treasured heirloom, others may decide to pass it on. If you plan to sell or gift yours, it is essential to have it cleaned as quickly as possible to preserve its value.

Men's style

Well Groomed Sartorial tips to help you dress the part from two leading Savile Row tailors, plus essential accessories for the well-dressed groom and best man

(for after wear) and enhances your complexion.

Savile Row tailor Cad & The Dandy is championing the bespoke Savile Row suit as a sharp, savvy and fashionable choice for the modern man. Its marriage guidance for the groom is to make the big decisions about what to wear well ahead of the big day. And here are some key pointers.

3. Add the lining

Cad & The Dandy advise a lightweight cupro lining for ensuring you keep your cool in testing circumstances. Luxury satin is a joy to wear if you are feeling bolder. As the lining is unseen (except when you hang your jacket or casually let it slip open), it can be bold and reflect your taste and personality. It might also be a good way to tap into the bridal colourscheme.

1. Daywear, DJ or morning suit?

As it’s your wedding day, you are in the fortunate position of setting the tone of the event – personal taste and the nature of the occasion will come into play here. There are no hard and fast rules, however, for daytime weddings a smart suit is a classic and practical choice that marries both elegance and formality. You have the advantages of more colour choices and a suit that can easily be worn after the event. It can also be personalised with a waistcoat and all manner of accessories. The black tie (tuxedo) is effective for evening events if it’s well styled. Cad & The Dandy suggest you also consider midnight blue as an alternative to black – it can actually appear blacker and more distinguished under artificial light. Morning suits are traditional formal wear and may also earn their keep if you attend a lot of smart

ABSOLUTELY WEDDINGS

MARCH16_WELL GROOMED.indd 60

weddings and racing events. The popular Morning Grey variant – with matching coat, waistcoat and trousers – is slightly less formal and traditionally only worn for summer events.

2. Now choose the cloth

It’s important to get the balance right between longevity and comfort. While heavier weight fabrics have more staying power, a medium to light weight cloth is likely to be cooler and more comfortable – especially considering the nervous energy of your wedding day – and is always appropriate for a UK wedding. If you’re going for a suit, rather than DJ or morning dress, you need to select a colour that is flexible

4. Finishing touches

Most importantly, you need a really good shirt and Cad & The Dandy say you should invest in bespoke. The shirt is critical to your look, will be designed to enhance your suit and – because it is built around you – it will be a perfect and flattering fit if you take your jacket off. Remaining finishing touches are much more flexible – from plain or bold ties to socks. Veer on the side of classic, rather than garish, and you can’t go wrong. u Cad & The Dandy is at 13 Savile Row, First Floor, London W1, with a further branch in the City. It also offers tailoring services to clients in New York. cadandthedandy.co.uk

STYLE COUNSEL

Alexandra Wood Savile Row tailor Alexandra Wood explains how she guides grooms and other members of the wedding party looking to cut a dash

the jacket not too short”. As Alexandra quite rightly points out, the suit you wear is not a fashion statement but something that will be there for posterity in the family photo album – nothing becomes ‘so last year’ quite so quickly as basing your suit-buying decision on this year’s cutting edge trends. While strong blue suits were very popular for weddings last year, there is a strong return to subtle grey, which is timeless and classic. Most of her clients are practical – wanting a suit to wear again – and this is always a key consideration. Alexandra says: “Once you have your framework, you still have scope to be more daring – for instance, eccentric waistcoat, bold lining, pocket watch, belt, braces, but with a suit that can be worn again”. All her suits can be designed around the time of day, season or climate where you are getting married, with the right weight fabric considered at the outset. “We use a wonderful selection of cloths, so even lightweight suits don’t crease these days.” Alexandra advises all grooms to make their first appointment at least two months ahead of the wedding; shorter lead times may sometimes be accommodated but it is important to leave as long a lead time as possible. Visits are by appointment, and the initial consultation takes around an hour. Consecutive fittings last around 20 minutes each, with up to two fittings for made-to-measure suits and up to five for bespoke. 

A

lexandra Wood is a relative rarity in tailoring circles – a woman – but after working in womens made-to-measure, she discovered her real interest was in the precision, and design possibilities, of men’s suits. A trained tailor and pattern cutter herself, she presides over a Savile Row premises where suits are created for both everyday wear and special occasions. Alexandra’s approach is to consider your skin tone, body shape and personality – aiming to design a suit that not only fits you perfectly but matches your style. For grooms, her key advice is to keep it simple. “I would always advise opting for something clean and classic, so the lapels shouldn’t be too skinny and

MILLINERS British craftsmanship

Hats off to these great London milliners – carrying on a great British tradition of creativity and, occasionally, eccentricity in the headwear department. And whether your taste is whimsical, wild or just plain alluring, they always have a hat or headpiece to ensure you stay ahead of the crowd Edwina Ibbotson

With a reputation for impeccable craftsmanship and style, Edwina Ibbotson has been a go-to milliner for over 20 years if you want a hat designed around your style and the occasion (many of her clients return year after year). Her bridal pieces are simply exquisite and she also designs beautiful hats for mother of the bride and guests, working with leading London designers such as Suzannah. She trained at both New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and London College of Fashion. Pretty much everything is made by hand – from her wooden blocks to hand-dyeing the majority of fabrics and trims. While she’s known for creating some real statement pieces, the work she creates for bride and wedding party at her Battersea atelier is extraordinarily delicate and romantic. Some clients even work from head down – getting Edwina to create a couture piece and then choosing the rest of the outfit – a great idea if you want a real statement piece. Notable hatwearing clients include Pippa Middleton, so with one of Edwina’s designs you know you are going to cut it in the style stakes. edwinaibbotson.co.uk

Lizzie McQuade

Lizzie McQuade is a Scottish-born and London-based hatmaker. You may well have seen her work in Dazed and Confused, Vogue (UK, Italy and China editions) or on the catwalk because she creates divine fantasy pieces that stylists simply love. Her trademarks are unusual trims and embellishment and clever dyeing techniques. She works with a variety of traditional and modern materials, from straw and felt to latex, in order to create sculptural pieces that are always feminine and flattering, sometimes a little bit quirky. For brides, she can create everything from a headpiece to a fabulous hat or fascinator to commission, with most pieces taking up to four weeks and involving an initial consultation and a fitting at her east London studio. While many of her catwalk and fashion pieces are fabulously bold,

Always divine, sometimes surprising and impeccably made, Awon Golding’s hats give wedding guests and race goers standout glamour. Growing up in India and Hong Kong, where she worked as a fashion writer and editor, she hotfooted it to London to pursue her hat-making dream, training in millinery at Kensington & Chelsea College. Awon interned with Edwina Ibbotson and made accessories for TopShop before establishing her London millinery studio. Much of her work is made to order, although she also produces seasonal collections and is stocked at the great London design meccas Liberty and Fortnum & Mason. Having featured at London Fashion Week’s Headonism (curated by Stephen Jones) and received a heartfelt thank you from high-profi le fan Lady Gaga, Awon has most defi nitely arrived in star hatter circles. awongolding.com

With a dizzying array of beautiful wedding accessories – from simple pins to the most ornate jewelled tiaras, Gillian Million’s Teddington atelier is manna for brides in search of a distinctive and bespoke headdress. Over time, she has added divine RTW headdresses and all manner of pins, vines and wedding jewellery, and these can be ordered online – although you’ll always receive a phone call before despatch. be one of many.” Savin London can take advantage of limited-run fabrics because it is not producing on a mass, but an atelier scale. Most gowns are very limited run or bespoke. While silks and chiffons predominate, there are details in leather, feathers and even faux fur. There is a strong use of fine laces – from Chantilly to Guipure – and Andrey incorporates more technical fabrics on occasions. The resulting dresses

ndrey Savin, founder and creative director of Savin London, spent time in both his home city of Moscow and in Paris before choosing London – and establishing his bridal business here was no matter of chance; he’d fallen in love with the place. Andrey had plenty of opportunity to consider Paris – his family relocated there in 2001 and he worked for several French luxury fashion houses after studying business and economics. But he took the decision to gain further expertise via the London College of Fashion, where he began his studies in 2011. By the time he’d completed his training, he was sold on everything from the climate to the national drink. He says: “I love this country and being in London. I adore the weather and drink my tea with milk! I also find that the people are honest and straightforward and it’s a logical society – which really helps when it comes to running a business”. While his heart is with London, his head also told him that this was the right place to establish a new business based around the concept of the modern bride. “Bridal is a very international market, but I’d say that London wedding fashion is

“London wedding fashion is more daring and brides are more open to fresh ideas”

more daring and brides are more open to fresh ideas.” The Savin London approach is hands on and local. Andrey and his team of nine seamstresses manufacture everything in house in his atelier in Greenwich. The focus is on limited runs and bespoke pieces and Andrey starts by finding the right quality raw materials. “We are not restrictive in our approach, so designs are dictated generally by what I find – I only work with exceptional fabrics and I don’t want a Savin gown to

are feminine and flattering, with a contemporary approach. While Andrey loves exploring edgy fabrics and their drape and detail possibilities, he is also influenced by timeless shapes, with everything from elegant shifts and separates to ballgowns in the mix. At Savin London’s first showing at The White Gallery in 2015, there was an enthusiastic response from buyers and the press and Andrey’s first visit to the New York fairs produced a similar buzz, with a repeat visit scheduled for this October. For Andrey, the key challenge is to remain in physical control of production. He says: “Each gown must be beautiful and memorable, and we don’t want to simply blend in. Most important of all, our dresses are designed to be worn and enjoyed by modern brides.” ◆ savinlondon.com

While the bridesmaid side is huge, Nicki Macfarlane is also a go-to for communion and occasion outfits. The range is stocked in boutiques from Azerbaijan to USA, shipping to private clients worldwide. There are some variations across markets, so whites and pales and some bolder colours are in the mix. Recently introduced subtle pattern is proving successful for all markets. For made-to-measure, there is an even broader range of fabrics and colours. icki Macfarlane is proof that it is possible to go from kitchen-table start up to international business. Her dresses, every young girl’s fairytale fantasy, also captured the hearts of the world at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Nicki’s gift for sewing was always there: “It was definitely in the blood, my mother embroidered beautifully”. Her business proper began around a decade ago. She says: “I agreed to make the outfits for a wedding where there were 22 bridesmaids and five, or was it eight, page boys”. Nicki took on this monster commission while in the process of moving. It was, she recalls, impossible to find a corner of her cottage unadorned with bridesmaid regalia. Despite this harrowing initiation, she didn’t lose her nerve. At first, the business was commission only. The switch to RTW happened when her daughter Charlotte came on board: “Charlotte had worked with Lulu Guinness from the very beginning, rising to global managing director. It was a huge asset to have her on board”. Nicki says their working relationship has been a huge part of the success story. “We are almost telepathic. Without even discussing something – a fabric say – we will both

“The racks of outfits across the Chelsea boutique are a dressing-up paradise" this, while the racks of RTW outfits across the delightful two-storey store are a dressing-up-box paradise of silk and tulle. Creating the Royal Wedding flowergirl outfits was very special. Nicki says: “It was such an exciting time, but of course Charlotte and I were sworn to secrecy. Friends must have thought we were mad because we were behaving so mysteriously and kept disappearing. We were so incredibly proud to be a part of the occasion”. While those gowns attracted huge acclaim, it is the Britishness of the Nicki Macfarlane brand that people love. “The first thing buyers want to know is where our garments are made,” says Nicki. “The fact they are handmade in Britain, in our own workrooms, counts for such a lot.” Nicki Macfarlane, 3 Langton Street, London SW10; nickimacfarlane.com

The

With a passion for sculpture, textiles and gems, Freya Rose has married her affinity for fine jewellery with her skill for 3D making to create unique bridal and occasion shoes

F

reya Rose has craftsmanship in her blood. Daughter of jeweller Barbara Tipple (see page 87), she grew up above a design studio. At art school, she developed both her interests in sculpture and in textiles and, when she joined London College of Fashion, she became hooked on the 3D sphere of product design. Shoes, in particular, seemed to meet her passion for sculpture and form. Freya says: “I loved everything about how they actually work – the symmetry and precision involved”. Freya graduated with a First in shoe and accessory design and worked with high-end and high-street names. Then her affinity with the world of jewellery came back into play, and that’s how the Freya Rose brand came into being. Originally, Freya wasn’t thinking bridal, just about the exciting surface design possibilities. But, of course, weddings are special – it was a case of the shoe fitting a glamorous market. The embellished heels she creates are now stocked in boutiques across the globe. Alongside shoes, there are occasion pieces – jewellery, belts, hair clips and bags. While the list of overseas clients continues to grow, this is a very London and craft-based business, also working with fine specialist suppliers Freya has developed strong working relationships with over years. The processes involved in creating a pair of Freya Rose’s signature shoes with mother-of-pearl heels are painstaking. She works with a small team of craftspeople in Ubud, Bali – a traditional centre of shell work. “It’s an extraordinarily spiritual place and we have built up a great relationship with our small team there –

“Mother of pearl is said to symbolise eternity – it seems so appropriate to wear for weddings” we’re very concerned that this must be a sustainable and ethical relationship,” says Freya. From there, applying the mother-of-pearl to heels is a whole art in itself. “This happens in Spain and we again work with a family who have the traditional skills – it’s a very special process and incredibly painstaking. Each pair may take one or two days to complete”. One of the best things about these shoes is the traditional significance of the shell. Freya says: “Mother of pearl is said to symbolise eternity – it seems so appropriate for weddings”. Despite their appearance, those heels are robust – heirloom pieces. There are many other shoes in the mix, including soft gold and silver leathers. Lace shoes are not only decorative, but light and breathable thanks to the construction technique; very fine lace organza embellishment is applied on

73 Weddings_MARCH16 FREYA ROSE copy LN.indd 37

a mesh base. There are also decadent sparkly numbers, while silk satin shoes take dye beautifully. While RTW is popular, opting for couture or bespoke is the way to create something truly original. You book an appointment and take along swatches, photos and ideas. Freya Rose has an extensive library of colours and fabrics, plus hand-embroidery and embellishment options. You can even commission a fresh idea from scratch. Typically, couture shoes take from six weeks; if it’s a totally bespoke shoe it takes up to 24 weeks and with up to two fittings. Whether it’s a classic pump or one-off bejewelled stiletto, Freya Rose has a style in its armoury of glam heels. And the craftsmanship involved means you get to wear a pair of shoes that is as unique and creative as your wedding day. ◆ Freya Rose is based at Islington, N1. The

Couturier British craftsmanship

You have probably seen Suzie Turner’s gowns on the red carpet at Cannes, LA or London because she has a stellar client list across the globe – with each Londonmade piece representing a unique collaboration

W

hile we may associate couture with high-profile super brands, Suzie Turner is something of a secret weapon for the world’s best dressed who don’t want their label to be the talking point. With a lifestyle of client consultations in the US, Europe and the Middle East, Suzie offers utter discretion. Also – another secret weapon for her clients – she never makes the same piece twice. The craft apprenticeship started early for Suzie. She says: “I was originally taught how to sew by my mother who had a soft furnishing business. From the age of 12, I used to help her on the industrial machines; sewing the curtains and fi nishing them by hand after school. At the age of 15 I went to work with a men’s tailor where I continued my training”. Suzie also studied during this time with a patterncutting tutor – she still works with her tutor to this day.

“We create pieces to last a lifetime, to be treasured and passed down” Suzie Turner pieces are all about luxury; rather than viewing them as simply fashion, she considers their longer-term value: “We are creating pieces that will last a lifetime, that can be treasured and passed down. This is always in the back of my mind”. The typical process of commissioning a couture piece begins with a consultation, where event, location and the client’s personal style are discussed. This also involves looking at samples. By the end of the first meeting,

75 Weddings_MARCH16 SUZIE TURNER LN.indd 75

there is a line-drawing sketch – Suzie says this helps ensure she and the client are both moving in the same direction. After the first rough outline, three more detailed sketches are produced, introducing samples of fabrics and embellishments and corresponding quotes. Once the final direction is agreed, measurements are taken and a pattern is cut to precisely fit the client’s figure. This enables creation of the first toiles. A further six to eight fittings take place – with corsetry and patterns altered to the millimetre to ensure perfect fit. The final piece includes fantastic couture details – a hand-embroidered label with the client’s name, sometimes the date of their wedding or special event, even a special message woven within the bridal gown. The whole process typically takes anything from four months. Many of her gowns take over 1,000 hours, but since every stage of the design and production process remains in-house, she also has the ability to fast-pace orders – good to know if there’s a last-minute red carpet invitation. Suzie Turner brides already have the red carpet treatment – with every stage of their special dress being agreed by and designed around them. Suzie says: “The beauty of starting the design process with a blank page is that the client has the freedom to request what she connects with in terms of cloth/colour rather that what’s in fashion or dictated by the mainstream. It really is such a personal service”. Suzie guarantees total secrecy, but many of her clients come to her because another client has revealed to them who designed their dress. She says: “Due to the design of each couture gown being to that specific client, we never share that look with any other prospective client in order to keep every piece truly unique”. Some dresses do come to wider attention – the beautiful Golden Globes gown worn by Jennifer Flavin Stallone earlier this year, a sumptuous number that appeared on the cover of the FT’s How to Spend It magazine, and a memorable front window of Harrods during London Fashion Week. While her schedule is punishing, with trips to the US in the early part of the year for ‘awards season’, Middle East visits throughout the year and regular dates across Europe for client meetings and fittings, Suzie is very proud to be flying the flag for British design. “We have some of the most fantastic designers coming from the UK, with McQueen setting the bar high. Britain has incredible tradition and skill in its history, and we are proud to be a part of that today.” ◆ * Suzie Turner Couture; suzieturner.com

What does PJ’sLONDON specialise in? We are an independent London label offering luxurious handmade silk and lace nightwear in a gorgeous palette of colours. Each pair of our pyjamas is fully customisable and made to order. Occasionally, we offer hand-painted nightwear in limited styles, creating unique and desirable sleepwear to treasure forever. Where is your nightwear made and what dyeing process do you use? Our range of pyjamas, nightshirts, short sets and robes is handmade in a small studio in West London and most of our suppliers are from the UK. We use pure silk that has been dyed on winch dye machines by talented experts in a small village in the English countryside. Essentially, the fabric is immersed in a dye bath and continually rotated at certain temperatures before draining and rinsing. This is a long craft process, but results in a beautifully smooth and clean appearance. How does the PJ’sLONDON customisation service work? Our customisation service allows the client to become the designer, choosing every detail including fabric, colour and finishes such as the neckline, waistband and sleeves. Monogramming is an option for an extra touch of individuality. We

offer 43 dreamy colour options, dyed to order. The typical delivery time for these bespoke garments is 1 to 2 weeks. Which items in your range are most popular with brides? Brides love our signature embellished robes, often wearing them for the makeup session before the ceremony – and they look great in pre-ceremony photos. Our delicate

shorts sets in silk or lace are an especially popular choice for the honeymoon. How should brides care for their PJ’s garments? Our garments are made with love and care to be treasured; we have a few tips to maintain their colour, shape and finish. Hand wash in lukewarm water using mild soap or a silk-wash product. Roll in a towel to absorb excess water then dry flat, away from sunlight or direct heat. Never put them in a tumble dryer and only iron on a low setting from the inside, using a clean cloth to protect the fabric. How would you describe your work? We are passionate about creating classic, feminine and elegant pyjamas and nightwear that give women the freedom to look and feel both beautiful and individual. DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND...

Sweet Pea is known for its less traditional diamonds and fine coloured jewels. Siobhan says she doesn’t pick the stones they pick her! Rose-cut diamonds often feature in her work, creating an understated, antique feel. She enjoys working with rarer finds, including coloured and unusual hues of diamonds and sapphires. Beautiful pearls are also a Sweet Pea trademark, although her designs are anything but Miss Marple. Instead, Siobhan gives them a contemporary and wearable edge by combining them with a sprinkling of diamonds. She also designs one-off pieces using rare faceted Tahitian and South Sea pearls, that make for truly special keepsake bridal pieces.

A TOUCH OF COLOUR…

“Getting to know clients, and undertstanding their needs and style, is paramount in

finding and creating the right piece to suit each individual”

Soft, pastel pearls and precious beads also feature in many of her designs. Siobhan is passionate about colour and creates her collections with each season’s colours in mind. This year Pantone colours are baby blue and pastel pink, ideal for bridesmaid’s outfits and complimenting jewellery. Delicate bracelets and fine necklaces with rose quartz and blue topaz lend themselves to be perfect bridesmaid gifts. With lots of designs on display for inspiration, Siobhan and the team can help them design an item from scratch. 'We specialise in delicate fine jewellery and customers usually come to us for that very reason. They may have something specific in mind, we take their ideas and translate them into reality with the distinctive Sweet Pea style’ Siobhan says. Visitors to the boutique are usually on the hunt for something original, be it the dream engagement or wedding ring or a special bridal piece. Sweet Pea prides themselves on their customer service and like to give a personalised experience when a customer comes into store. ‘Getting to know the client and what their needs and style are, are paramount in understanding, finding and creating the right piece for each individual’ Siobhan says.

arbara Tipple won her first award in 1973 when she was still a college student – and it was a very big deal indeed, catapulting a young woman from Hampshire into the public eye and instantaneously giving her a reputation in international fine jewellery circles. At the age of 22, Barbara was touchingly naïve about how big a win this was: “It was the Diamonds-International Award and I was still a student at Hornsey Art College. De Beers and Harry Oppenheimer were involved – I was very provincial and simply didn’t know who they were”. While she may have been naïve about the fine jewellery industry, Barbara did know from quite early on that she wanted to be an

artist. Born and raised in Hampshire, she attended Portsmouth College of Art – originally with a view to being a portrait painter. Her first great inspiration was found in the galleries of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the UK's great treasure house of the decorative arts. She was particularly inspired by the Japanese artistry at the V&A, as well as some of the more random but beautiful objects – armour and objects in bronze particularly. But it was the museum’s exhibition of the work of Austrian-born London jewellery Gerda Flöckinger in 1971 that inspired Barbara to switch focus from fine art and train as a jeweller. Winning her first major prize opened doors, but she turned her back on a career with Graff after a number of years because the kind of jewellery she wanted to create was something a bit different. Her love of natural and organic forms inspired

87 MARCH16_BARBARA TIPPLE copy LN.indd 87

her approach, which is to work with both precious and unusual materials. Many of her pieces seem impossibly complex – her who’s who in the Goldsmiths’ Directory describes them as “tortuously difficult” to create, while Lucia van der Post of the Financial Times has described aspects of her work with jewels and metals as: “monumental”. She travels the world in search of inspiration and unusual gemstones. Having won the DiamondsInternational Award now three times, she is a past master with precious stones. But she also loves high quality gems that are less commonly seen, such as tourmaline and spinel, or unusual combinations such as diamonds with moonstones. Barbara is passionate about the possibilities, especially when she finds a really unusual stone, but it is never about its value in isolation (and certainly not the ‘bling’ factor), but the possibilities when it is combined with metals and other stones. Her Mayfair store has a workshop downstairs where her equally talented husband David Ward – a renowned Master Goldsmith – works with her to realise the final vision for each piece. At first glance, some of these pieces look deceptively simple, but there is always a level of intricate workmanship that tests the limits of artistry and demonstrates Barbara’s continued desire to blur the line between fine art and fine jewellery. ◆ Barbara Tipple, 1b Albemarle Street, London W1. barbaratipple.co.uk

Trends for 2016

Leading bridal stylist Pam Wrigley highlights key trends for wedding hair and make-up and shares some trade secrets from her make-up bag P H O T O S : A G ATA KO C O R I

hile hair trends haven’t made any seismic shifts in 2016, with soft and ‘unstyled’ looks still remaining in vogue, there is a subtle move into some more formal styles that work with bridal fashion trends. Meanwhile, make-up remains styled, with focus on eyes and soft blending for a look that will ensure you shine in the photos and – most importantly – face-to-face with your guests. UNDRESSED HAIR For hair, the most popular look remains relaxed. Pam says: “The effect most brides want to achieve is effortless, as if they haven’t tried too hard”. This includes the use of soft braids and the ‘half up, half down’ look. For this to work, she cautions, you have to get professional advice as hair must be in tune with overall dress and wedding style, and be designed to stay firmly in place throughout the celebration. Some brides are choosing to wear their hair down in soft waves to create an ethereal look – again, the key trend is not to look overdone or stiff. Soft styles work very well with hair vines and decorative hairpins – pins can be particularly effective as they not only help to keep the hair in place but can be grouped in a cluster to the back or side of the hair to enhance the style. While tiaras are not favoured by many of Pam’s brides at the moment, in tune with the new romantic styles there are signs of a revival in the flower crown – these have also been seen on a few catwalks recently.

THE ‘UP DO’ Low buns remain popular, looking particularly good if you have a gown that is strapless, low-backed or with a lace overlay so that key features to the back of the dress are revealed, but with some hair showing. Another key trend is the bigger and smoother up do. This is a rather more formal style in the Audrey Hepburn mould. Pam says: “For this you may require discreet back-combing just to give the style the structure and staying power you need”. This look can work particularly well if you have a formal tea-gown or 1950s-style dress, as it adds height and shows off the strong shoulder line of the dress. DRAMATIC MAKE-UP There is more drama and overt styling to make-up, although the looks is polished but discreet. Pam says: “Make-up tends to follow the opposite trend to hair, so when hair was really coiffed make-up was more natural. It’s always about getting the balance right so the bride doesn’t look ‘overdone’. Right now, make-up is not hard but it is styled, with a hint of drama that works for both photography and the event itself”. This look focuses on perfect eyes and lashes and with less colour and emphasis to lips. Sometimes eyes can have the nude look, but for evening and winter weddings, brides are still favouring smoky browns and greys. It’s important that strong eyes are matched properly with lips, and a professional trick of the trade is to highlight the cupid’s bow of the lips and the centre of the eyelid. Cheek colour is very soft and

PRO MAKE-UP SECRETS blended, aiming for a hint of flush– peachy and sandy tones work better than purer pinks or bronzes, which can be cold and unnatural against white and pale gowns or in strong light. BALANCED BROWS Well-defined and balanced eyebrows are a must, which is not a look you may be able to achieve alone. Pam says: “I tend to recommend that brides visit a brow specialist a week or two before the wedding to get the shape of the brows defined and into place. Brows can then be perfected on the day by your wedding stylist, who will fill in any gaps and complete the brow”. u Pam Wrigley can be contacted on 07720 300062; weddingmakeupandhair.com

Bridal Survival Guide

If getting ready for your big day is starting to feel like a mountain climb or marathon, here are wise words from London trainer and fitness guru Nadya Fairweather to help you keep focus on what really counts about building the confidence to not just stand well but walk tall with shoulders back, so that you glide down that aisle”.

3

GET INTO A ROUTINE – Building some sort of exercise routine into your planning early, before things get busy, is really useful. Not only will it help with stress and overall wellbeing, but it’s more likely to be sustainable. Nadya says: “If you sort out your time management early and make some exercise integral to your routine it makes a huge difference to your physical and emotional shape”.

4 SECRETS TO GREAT

BEAUTY SLEEP Nadya recommends brides get enough rest – here’s how to get your beauty sleep * Go to bed at roughly the same time every night. A daytime nap may be better than a lie-in if you have had a late night. * Light from computer and tablet screens may interfere with the body’s melatonin levels (a natural sedative). Switching off an hour or so before bed makes sense. * That old trick of a warm bath and hot drink can really help – just avoid caffeine. * A night-time beauty ritual helps with the wind down. Luxurious products, such as Trilogy’s Rosehip range, feel great and give your skin an overnight workout. trilogyproducts.com

Known for getting everyone from new mums, to CEOs into shape – and helping Princess Beatrice power through the London Marathon – U-Shape founder Nadya Fairweather is a former gymnast who leads a team of specialist trainers. Her tips for brides offer welcome reassurance – all are achievable, however short of time you feel.

1

FOCUS ON SLEEP – It isn’t all about the ‘burn’ or the hours at the gym – in fact, sleep is top of Nadya’s bridal ‘to do’ list. She recommends clients work with a sleep app to monitor their patterns of rest. Nadya says: “Even if you think you are good at coping, the run up to your wedding is a stressful time. A sleep app helps you monitor your patterns, and also shows you how much better you sleep when you’ve had even 10 minutes of exercise”.

2

WORK ON POSTURE – This is a key area Nadya likes to work on because it’s the thing that can make or break how you look on the day. We all tend to slouch and the wedding photos can be unforgiving. “There are exercises – including work with a stability ball or BarreConcept training – that build core strength and improve posture and upper body tone. But actually it’s also

93 MARCH16_BRIDAL SURVIVAL.indd 93

4

DON’T PANIC – Guess what, that exercise routine doesn’t always happen. Nadya says crunch time often happens shortly before the final dress fitting. Instead of embarking on a crazy fitness blitz in the final weeks, talk to an expert to set and achieve targets – be it toning, weight loss or a confidence boost. “I have experience with a fair few brides who want support at later stages. The focus then is on giving them information and tools do as much as possible on their own – a lot can be achieved”.

5

THINK DIFFERENT – We tend to think about the treadmill or track, but there are so many other ways to achieve your goals. Nadya says: “Boxing is great for toning your upper body, torso and abs – many female clients love it because it gives them an opportunity to vent and release stress by punching something! And you don’t have to do too much, after ten minutes you are on the floor. Yoga keeps you fit, regulates hormones and releases stress – and it's quiet time away from your phone. And our life coach is great at helping people work out their goals and then achieve them.” • U-Shape offers personal training programmes across London; u-shape.co.uk

his really does come down to sound planning, so do discuss it with your photographer ahead of the wedding day and pin down exactly what you want to achieve in terms of both overall style and the groupings of shots. I will always recommend to my clients that they should include some more ‘formal’ portraits and group shots in the mix – even when the overall style of the photography is reportage and informal. These don’t have to be too stiff and posed, but in 20 or 30 years time it’s important to have that image of key people all together in the family photo album. Timing is crucial, so when you’re planning build in a slot for the portraits and group shots to happen. I’d recommend it happens early – ideally between the ceremony and the celebrations and before guests relax, remove their hat, undo their tie and start to enjoy the party atmosphere. Even if you have lots of group shots, these (along with bride and groom portraits and shots of guests enjoying their day) should be manageable in 90 minutes or less, with organisation. Do put together a list of the group shots you want and then give that to both the photographer and a trusted member of your team. That way, they can liaise and ensure that all the right people are located and come together for the shots you want for the photo album. ◆

WE'RE THINKING ABOUT ORGANISING A WEDDING ABROAD WITH INVITED GUESTS, BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START. CAN YOU ADVISE ON KEY AREAS WE NEED TO CONSIDER BEFORE WE DECIDE IF THIS IS A GOOD IDEA?

M

arrying abroad can be wonderful and the fundamental planning rules don’t change, but there are two extra points to consider at the outset. The first is suppliers; using Britishbased companies makes initial planning easier but adds costs for transportation and accommodation. If you choose local suppliers, on the other hand, this may be cost-efficient but the approach doesn’t always match what we expect in the UK. This is why professional wedding planners always have networks they can tap into to help them source the best people with the right track record in any given location. The second point is about fulfilling your role as host. While a glamorous château may seem a bargain compared to London prices it’s easy to forget the extras. Factor in not only travel and accommodation support but also extra entertainment as guests will be arriving ahead of the wedding and staying on afterwards. As a bare minimum, a welcome and an after-party event need to be included in your budget. Of course, these are practicalities that should not dissuade you from your dream, but careful planning is essential to avoid getting stressed over the details. I counsel anyone considering an overseas wedding to sit down with someone who’s planned and organised something on this scale before. ◆

cine malice.com

I WANT TO FILM MY WEDDING, BUT THIS MUST BE IN LINE WITH THE OCCASION. HOW DO I CHOOSE AND BRIEF A COMPANY AND HOW SHOULD THE FILMING WORK TO GET THE RESULTS I WANT?

I

t’s important to find someone whose style suits your vision. Videographers have vastly different approaches – my work centres on glamour, ensuring people and places look their best and I create a mini movie. Watching the work of different videographers is the best way to ensure you find the approach you want. Like all modern videographers, I use a small handheld to be unobtrusive. But I also see it as my role to be as discreet as possible, so that guests don’t know I’m there. And, because the goal is make people look their best I will never, for example, film them eating and drinking. I then choose my images in post-production really carefully to make sure everyone looks good. These are all points you need to find out about, so do meet the videographer before agreeing to hire them to ensure you have a connection. I see that as critical because the bride must feel at ease with me from the moment I start filming. She’s the most important person and I’m there to make her feel relaxed and beautiful, which requires trust. At your meeting, also get the videographer to describe their time commitment and process. For instance, I am there from start to end to capture the whole story. Then the editing takes two or three weeks, after which the couple approve the final cut. The film must match the magic of your day, so ask lots of questions to ensure that the final product will match your expectations on quality. ◆

99 Weddings_MARCH16_Weddings_Experts copy LN.indd 95

Suzannah Crabb has been described as party dress genius, with choices for everything from weddings to red-carpet events. Here, she advises mothers of the bride and groom. here is no ‘one size fits all’ for mothers of the bride or T groom. Things only go wrong if you choose what you think you should wear, rather than what suits you. For instance, the classic short bolero jacket and dress works for some, but cuts others off in the wrong place. We all have our own sense of style and maintaining that is important to ensure confidence on the day. Our starting point is always enhancing the client’s best points. We may recommend a shift or a 1950s-style fitted dress, or a coat-dress with an elegant line to create the illusion of height. A slash or scoop neckline or shallow v-back will show off a beautiful skin, and for great legs we might look at knee-length designs. While it’s important to be sensitive to the bridal palette, often it’s better to choose a complementary shade. We guide clients on all these points and create a top-to-toe ensemble – including bags and shoes. We tend to recommend avoiding complete matches. One trick is to combine a very plain dress with a pair of fabulous shoes or a statement hat. We work with a great group of milliners and shoemakers so can ensure the complete outfit works perfectly. We offer both bespoke and RTW outfits, dressing many brides as well as the wedding party. Made-to-measure garments typically take 12 weeks to create and RTW can be adapted by, for instance, changing the colour, in around three weeks. ◆

BOUQUETS Candle bright

These ideas are from McQueens. Founded in Shoreditch by Kally Ellis in 1991, it has earned a global reputation for simple and stylish arrangements where flowers are the star, also running popular flower schools

A wedding with added candlelight is the ultimate in romance, and Nikki and the team at Wild at Heart love adding candlesticks and tea lights around arrangements of beautiful flowers to transform the ambiance. Hanging votives from trees or creating a candlelit pathway or staircase is also a great way to lead guests into the venue.

A single colour is dramatic and effective, especially when it ties together your colour theme. Here, rich burgundy tulips are hand tied for a winter wedding.

Country blooms Philippa Craddock worked closely with the bride – an interior designer – at this Sussex celebration to create a fun and upbeat theme for the table. The bride had already sourced the brightly coloured candles for the table, so Philippa’s team arranged flowers in an array of different bottles, vases and clay pots – some new and other salvaged. These were filled with country-style blooms, including peonies, delphiniums, alchemilla, cornflowers and viburnum. Impressive swags and garlands of scented flowers decorated the marquee and church door.

Marrying unusual flower combinations can produce stunning results. For a spring wedding, fragrant paperwhites and choice blush-white roses create a delicate and harmonious arrangement.

Combining soft pastel yellow and peach roses with pure white, and unopened rosebuds, creates this feminine handtied arrangement.

Mediterranean splash A fabulous Sardinian location deserves flowers to match and Philippa Craddock and a team of 35 worked with a Dubai couple over five days to create the ultimate romantic floral theme to match the rugged surroundings. This included this fabulous 20m-long ceiling installation, trees and planters of lush blooms. In contrast, delicate and muted blooms were used for tablesettings.

Mixing complementary shades softens the overall effect. This hand-tied arrangement uses soft whites in combination with pink-topurple blooms and sprigs of fragrant rosemary.

Sayat ‘I do’ River Cottage HQ! Nestled in the Devon countryside Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s famous organic farm is already among the most celebrated outof-town foodie destinations. And this iconic location is now also becoming a number one spot to get hitched with all the trimmings PHOTOS: HELEN LISK

R

iver Cottage has given millions of TV viewers a taste for great cooking since 1998, when Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall first brought his food ethos to Channel 4. His HQ is home to the award winning cookery school and unique dining experiences. Now fully licensed to conduct civil ceremonies, couples can get married in Hugh’s famous farmhouse or beautifully refurbished barn with breathtaking views across Devon's Axe Valley. This well-loved TV series backdrop can become the exclusive setting for your special day. At the heart of the 65-acre organic smallholding lies the original listed farmhouse, a versatile space suitable for intimate and exclusive wedding ceremonies and celebrations with a small group of loved ones. Steeped in over 400 years of history, it has been tastefully refurbished with wood fires, open inglenook fireplace and cosy window seating with views onto the beautiful walled garden. Guests have open access to the kitchen and can watch the food being cooked and prepared by the dedicated team of chefs. The meal is served in the atmospheric dining

room, which is beautifully laid out. Up to 20 guests can be seated around the long table running the length of the room, softly lit in winter with candles and a warming fire or twinkling with fairy lights and bunting in the summer months. Across the courtyard from the farmhouse is the gloriously light and elegant space of the refurbished threshing barn. Perfect for a traditional ceremony any time of year, it is large enough to seat 70 guests on two long banqueting tables laid out for a splendid feast. During the summer months, a further 30 can dine on the adjoining sprawling wooden decked area (complete with heating and marquee cover). In the evening, with formalities over, all tables are removed so that up to 120 guests have plenty of room to dance the night away to live music or a DJ. The lovingly maintained walled vegetable garden

105 MARCH16_RIVER COTTAGE.indd 89

is a gorgeous, tranquil environment for a blessing. Guests sit on benches and straw bales watching you walk through the organic veggies for your ceremony underneath a hazel arch woven with climbing sweet peas. During the winter (or inclement weather), the Mongolian yurt and the farmhouse are cosy and romantic alternatives to the garden, where your guests can gather around roaring fires in a setting lit by twinkling fairy lights. Getting married at River Cottage is a unique experience, where bride and groom share centre stage with the food. Couples design their wedding menu with the talented River Cottage chefs, wowing guests with the finest local and seasonal ingredients from the West Country, as well as produce grown and reared on the farm itself. Your dedicated wedding planner will be on hand to assist you every step of the way, ensuring nothing but the very best for you and your guests. River Cottage HQ is located just five minutes from Axminster, which is on the direct train line from Waterloo. The surrounding rolling hills and picturesque seaside towns of the Jurassic Coast make this a perfect destination wedding venue for your invited family and friends to take an extended break. u RIVER COTTAGE HQ 01297 630 322 weddings@rivercottage.net rivercottage.net/weddings

BE ARTFUL At Prezola, there are plenty of new and established designers in the mix who can add a fresh and colourful edge to your home

A

lthough practical gifts are always welcome, most of life’s essentials (toaster, coffee machine) are covered for many couples. So while it’s always a good idea to put a few luxe versions of things you already have on the list (a fabulous Mauviel copper saucepan or an Alessi wok, for instance) this is also a golden opportunity to look at textiles and other objects that surround you – and maybe even start afresh. At Prezola, there’s a strong focus on working with new – as well as established – designers to ensure that everyday objects are anything but dull. The things you choose for your list can be as individual as you are.

EVERYDAY FUN

esigner items don’t have to be big-ticket. There are lots of affordable and practical objects in the mix, some of which may even inspire a whole

room. Alternatively, opt for larger items such as her fabulous Watercolour Patchwork Duvet Set (£95-£125) to bring a colour pop to your bedroom. For the giver, this is both a practical and individual present.

YOUNG DESIGNERS

rezola has some exciting young designer names in the mix. Bath-based illustrator and designer Ben Rothery produces beautifully detailed naturethemed artworks and these are available as 100-run limited

decorating theme. For instance, Prezola’s Thornback & Peel range comprises a fabulous selection of retro and eccentric textiles and kitchenalia that offer the twin virtues of being useful and a bit 'out there' – great for the giver as they know their choice wil be remembered. Even the humble oven glove can be a pleasure to use if you choose its Rabbit & Cabbage design (£25). You will find a variety of fun prints – from funky Lobster to the wonderful Jelly & Pigeon design – and these appear on a whole range of everyday items, from napkins to trays and cushions.

GLAMOUR PRINTS

here are some great designer names that you can add to your wedding list to bring glamour into your home. For instance, Clarissa Hulse – already a

leading light in British textile design and strongly influenced by her globe-trotting childhood spent in Thailand and multiple European countries – does colour and texture simply brilliantly. At Prezola, you can introduce this vivacity in small ways, via one of her cushions (£19-£45), although a pile in complementary or contrasting shades would be even better and could make a new focal point in a neutral

edition giclee prints that you can frame for yourself (£30). Another go-to young designer name is JimbobArt (aka James Ward), who has designed commission pieces for names such as Lacoste and Uniqlo, not to mention many major newspapers and magazines in the UK and US. You can own one of his distinctive and always charming prints on an everyday set of stacking coffee mugs (£42.50).

electing gifts should be a pleasure but, with so much to choose from, it is easy to get stuck in ‘sensible mode’ and neglect the things you would really enjoy receiving. Anne-Marie Jenkins, managing director of The Wedding Shop, gives five tips for getting it right.

VARIETY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME

Choosing the

PERFECT GIFTS The Wedding Shop’s Anne-Marie Jenkins gives the lowdown on how to put your wedding list together

Introduce variety – not only in the items that you choose, but price points. For instance, Alice Peto’s Palm Tree, Camel and Flamingo ranges of china (from £14-£65) can be mixed and matched and add a contemporary, upbeat feel to your table. Table linen is another good choice; items generally come as a set, which means guests feel that they have given you something substantial and with day-to-day value.

1

love to gift. Anne-Marie also singles out luggage – practical and will be guaranteed to get lots of use over many years. The Wedding Shop’s new range of Hartmann cases (from £450) is smart enough to take you anywhere.

DON’T FORGET THE HEIRLOOM OBJECTS

Some guests may want to buy you an object to be handed down through the generations, so it is a good idea to have a few truly memorable items on the list that you would love to own but could never perhaps justify buying for yourself – for instance, a fine Lalique vase or

3

ADD LARGER ITEMS

Anne-Marie Jenkins says it’s important to widen the scope. She says: “You would be amazed how generous friends and family can be”. For instance, a fabulous chandelier or beautiful artwork are items people

HARTMANN CASES ARE A GIFT THAT CAN TAKE YOU ANYWHERE

beautiful Bacccarat crystal candleholder.

INCLUDE ONCEIN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCES

Vouchers can be really imaginative and some guests may prefer to gift in this way, sure in the knowledge that an experience will be as memorable as an object in your home. Vouchers can match your taste and the location of your honeymoon – for instance a Vespa tour of Rome, romantic safari in Botswana or private dinner on a Caribbean beach.

4

SEND INSERT CARDS WITH YOUR INVITATIONS

It makes it so much easier for people who want to locate your list if you simply add an information insert card when you send out your invitations. Even if guests go ‘off list’, they will have gained a clear idea of your taste and the type of objects you love.

or many travellers, Mauritius represents the epitome of beach holiday relaxation. Miles of white coastline, crystal waters and romantic sunsets make it a magnet for honeymooners, as well as couples choosing a destination wedding. Our choice destination through Beachcomber Tours, Royal Palm Mauritius, is located in the northwestern tip of the main island, near the small town of Grand Baie. And the hotel lives up to its name, with scores of swaying palm trees in a charming and tranquil setting. It features a series of stunning suites overlooking the picture postcard-perfect white sand beach or the lush tropical gardens. With all home comforts, they also include generous terraces that are just the thing for enormous room-service breakfasts or snoozing in the shade for the afternoon. Royal Palm has three restaurants under the capable stewardship of Michelin-awarded executive chef Michel de Matteis, all with great food and panoramic views of the ocean and beach. For a busy day doing nothing much, you simply wander down from your suite after breakfast straight onto the beach and stretch out on a reserved lounger. When mid-morning thirst hits, there is fresh coconut water served in a hollowed out shell. For lunch, it is hard to fault the relaxed ambiance of Le Bar Plage, where the fish is so fresh it is practically wriggling. If fish is not your dish, there are international classics such as steak tartare and Caesar salad. A lazy afternoon can be spent in the hotel’s Clarins spa, an oasis nestled behind the beach in the secluded gardens. There are pampering post-wedding treats to indulge in, including reflexology, reiki and ayurverdic treatments – even meditation if the magic of the resort hasn’t quite unknotted your wedding nerves. More active couples can take advantage of watersports, including sailing, private boat tours, snorkeling and waterskiing. It’s a great place to learn to waterski – the water is so warm here that falling in is all part of the fun.

Balmy evenings start at the open-air bar on the main terrace, listening to the live band, before heading down to La Brezza, the hotel’s superb Italian restaurant led by chef Alessandro Morino. You may want to forgo the large lunch to do justice to the dishes he serves. If you have had your fill of lazy days of pampering and beach lounging, there is plenty of island to explore. Hanging hundreds of metres up, suspended from a zipline wire in Casela Park, you can see the beautiful scenery stretched out beneath you. The volcanic terrain and climate mean that the mountains are covered with lush greenery that is perfect for trekking expeditions. Those with a penchant for bathing in waterfalls can visit the Tamarind or Black River Falls or the brilliantly named Pamplemousses Botanical Garden. If you fancy a day trip off island, catamarans go from Grand Baie to the small islands located to the north. Mauritius has a rich and fascinating cultural heritage. Long a trading post, it was colonised by the Dutch, then the French (who renamed it Isle de France), before coming under British governance. While Mauritius regained independence

in 1968, all these influences – especially the French – remain. People speak both French and English, but you will also hear Mauritian Creole. The bustling market in the capital Port Louis is a good location to soak up the

atmosphere. Though less fraught than say, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, it’s a lively place and home to a wide variety of curiosities that, with closer investigation, could easily yield interior design gold. Smaller Grand Baie is also worth some shopping time, offering bargain cashmere, as well as garments and textiles (the island is a textile manufacturing centre for many big brands). For a casual lunch in Grand Baie, try the Beach House for a breezy ocean location, live music and excellent shrimp. Whether ziplining, trawling through the markets in Port Louis or soaking up the sun and sea vibe from your wellappointed suite at the Royal Palm, Mauritius will tick every box for a romantic getaway – a magical setting, fine food and just the right blend of tranquility and adventure. u ROYAL PALM MAURITIUS Royal Palm Mauritius offers accommodation, ranging from Junior to Royal Suite. hen Gemma and Michael first began planning their wedding day they were spoilt for choice – should they choose the bride’s majestic but cloudy birthplace London or the groom’s home turf of beautiful and sunny Auckland? In the end, despite the bets they were placing on the vagaries of the English weather, it was Gemma’s manor that won the day – it seemed the right choice because it’s where they first met and had lived together. Once the location had been fixed, the rest of the planning for their wedding day fell into place and this turned into a very chic English-themed affair to celebrate their romance. They chose Dukes London in St James – a classic Mayfair hotel that they both knew and loved for its traditional style and exceptional Martinis. Their ceremony and champagne and canapés reception in Dukes hotel was

attended by friends and family and, with many guests flying in from the other side of the world, this proved to be a convenient, luxurious and very British choice. They couldn’t, of course, plan the London weather, but even this came good, with the barometer set to fair and the mercury rising sharply as the big day approached. For Gemma, this was another reason to celebrate: “What a day! It was over 30 degrees on our wedding day – and all that week – which our Kiwi guests loved!” Gemma chose a beautiful and ultra

The delectable group of bridesmaids and flower girls wore dresses handmade by Little Bevan in a dusky shade of lilacpurple, with sashes in soft pink. The flowers by New Covent Garden Flower Market florist Elizabeth Marsh maintained the romantic theme, blending soft pink and

purple-hued roses. “Sarah from Little Bevan made such beautiful dresses for our flower girls and bridesmaids, while Liz Marsh really did go the extra mile as our florist”, says Gemma. To mark the day properly, the couple slipped away from their guests to go on a journey round London with photographer Neil Horne of Eye Imagine and capture some of their favourite landmarks on film. For Gemma and Michael, this journey as newly minted bride and groom became a high point: “We will never forget

the amazing photoshoot Neil Horne arranged all around London – it included champagne stops and a barefoot walk in the sand along the Thames foreshore!” Captured through a photographer's lense, both bride and groom look supremely happy and relaxed throughout their day. While every wedding has its planning issues and surprises, co-ordinating the arrival of guests from around the world adds a higher level of logistical challenge for the bride and groom. But Gemma remains sanguine about the stresses involved; her advice to other couples is to relax and go with the flow. She says: “The stress is all part of the day, especially the build up. Treat it like the fizz in the champagne – it makes everything more tingly”. u

Paris match

It simply had to be Paris for Sherry and Jeffrey’s high-summer destination wedding, and they captured the magic of the place they had first met with an elegant two-celebration event for their international guests P H O T O S : L E S E C R E T D ’A U D R E Y & O N E A N D O N LY PA R I S P H O T O G R A P H Y

aris was the only logical location for the wedding of Jeffrey and Sherry. With all its romance and elegance, it was also the site of their first meeting. Sherry, who hails from Hong Kong, had met Jeffrey from Texas in the fabled ‘City of Love’ four years earlier and the couple had never looked back. This truly international wedding was designed as a twocelebration event for the couple and their 66 guests. Sherry and Jeffrey chose as their base the Four Seasons George V Paris and the festivities began with a welcome cruise down the River Seine. Guests took in the city panoramas offered by the river, while enjoying canapés, cocktails, and specially prepared dishes from food stations. The wedding ceremony took place at the splendid 18th-century Ledoux building, Le Pavillon de Musique de la Comtesse du Barry. There, a pure white marquee was placed alongside the mansion. Guests arrived in S & J monogrammed vehicles and were greeted by music from a string quartet. Sherry had chosen a gown by Galia Lahav that evoked a distinctly 1920s Parisian aesthetic. A beautiful floral theme of white and pink, including lush roses, was used to dress the venue and for the bride’s bouquet. The S & J monogram was a recurring theme, used on the wedding aisle carpet, on table linen, guests’ welcome packs, and as an overlay on mansion mirrors. Custom-commissioned throughout the different venues, it brought a romantic touch to soften and personalise these heritage settings. Guests received handmade parasols and fans, inspired by the couple’s Hong Kong home – also a very practical touch in the August heat of Paris.

“A theme of white and pink, including lush roses, was used at the venue and for the bride’s bouquet”

The ceremony took place under a bespoke floral arch decorated in tonal shades, ranging from blush to vibrant pink. Sherry walked up the aisle with her father and was accompanied by three bridesmaids in Jenny Yoo gowns. Jeffrey – in an impeccably cut suit – had three groomsmen, and the cortege was completed by a flower girl and page boy. Guests enjoyed a relaxed lunch inside Pavillon du Barry to the accompaniment

of the string quartet. An illustrator created live portraits of guests – a very Parisian touch – as a memento of the day. As night fell, guests were chauffeured to the George V Four Seasons for the cocktail reception. With a jazz quartet playing, guests were invited to explore the relationship of the couple through a series of framed photographs lining the walls. The bride had changed into a Grecianstyle gown decorated with crystals and created by Reem Acra. The centrepiece was a tree bedecked with ornate keys, each bearing a card tag. Guests removed a key, wrote their advice on the ‘key to the happy marriage’ on the tag, attached this to a board and were invited to keep the key as a memento. By the end of the reception, the board was full of wise and kind messages for Sherry and Jeffrey.

hen Rekha and Matt began planning their wedding, their first big decision was the venue. They opted for the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), just off The Strand. As Rekha says: “We thought it spoke for itself, with its beautiful, simple Regency style”. Beyond the glorious Nash architecture, a key side benefit of the ICA was its location – situated on The Mall opposite the lush green space of St James’s Park. It had everything they wanted for their celebration: “It brings with it history and occasion. Plus it has panoramic views of London.” The couple wanted to do justice to their elegant backdrop and chose an inspired colour theme – neutrals blended with corals and a hint of vintage lilac to offset the pale blues/greys of the ICA’s high-ceilinged reception spaces.

Hackney Florist The Flower Appreciation Society created a series of lush informal designs using seasonal blooms: “They had hardly any direction from us,” says Rekha. While the main palette was restrained, Rekha and Matt introduced very personal touches. “We wanted to include an Indian element to the day,” says Rekha, “So we put together a contemporary-style display of a bronze Ganesh garlanded in flowers”. This gave guests the opportunity to celebrate in the traditional way by saying a Puja

(blessing) after the wedding ceremony. Rekha also had intricate Mehndi (henna) designs created on her hands. Rekha’s gown was custom-designed by Charlotte Wilden of Wilden Bride and featured a pale gold-blush silk as a base, layered with silver-grey mesh and overlaid with Chantilly lace and chiffon. With its delicate frilled bodice featuring

crystals, glass beads and sequins, and the waist defined with soft grosgrain ribbon, this was a romantic dress with timeless style credentials. With friends and family gathered to celebrate, there were still opportunities for Rekha and Matt to enjoy time alone. The high point of their day was the glass of champagne they shared together after the ceremony on the balcony of the ICA building. Rekha says: “Looking down at all the tourists, it felt like a royal wedding!” The planning experience was relatively stress free, thanks to their decision to put their faith in a team of local and experienced suppliers, meaning they never had to travel long distances to plan and organise. Rekha says: “All of them had such a cool London style, so we never had to worry about things being too ‘wedding-y'. We didn’t fuss over too many details – such as name cards for tables and the like. The less we had to do, the less stressed we were”. They were particularly grateful for the support of the ICA’s planning team. Rekha says: “We had a dedicated planner from start to finish, who answered pretty much every one of my emails (even the ones I had forgotten I’d sent) within a day.

On the big day, the staff were a perfect combination – military precision without being obtrusive”. Rekha and Matt had chosen a cake with a difference, a delicious croquembouche from Boulangerie Jade in Blackheath: “Perhaps the coolest wedding cake every,” says Rekha. They had also selected fine cheeses and meats from The French Comte in Borough Market – a very London insider touch – for the wedding feast. Their celebration was captured beautifully by photographer Anne Schwarz. Rekha says: “Anne is an amazing photographer; she kept things so tasteful and never cheesy, plus it was just lovely to have her there on the day". If Rekha and Matt have one regret, it’s that they were so laid back that they had completely forgotten to sort out a car after the party. Rekha says: “I did wish I’d booked some transport back to our Covent Garden hotel room, instead of having to hail a black cab in my wedding dress – although there was something quintessentially London about that”. u

reat wedding photos often rely on an element of serendipity, but when two celebrations of love collide something good is bound to happen. festival atmosphere on the streets of London. Photographer Laura Babb takes up the story: LAURA BABB: The route of the Pride March went right past the door of One Whitehall Place, where Laura and Pete were holding their celebration, and when the three of us headed outside for portraits they were practically mobbed by happy well-wishers!

I quickly rallied these well-wishers into an alternative family group shot right there on the street. It was a spontaneous and joyful moment, in which everyone was cheering on the bride and groom. And this turned out to be one of Laura and Pete's favourite shots from the whole wedding. PHOTO: Laura Babb; babbphoto.com
