o, what did you do during our many lockdowns? I (sort of) became a dog trainer. It was something I was always interested in doing, although I only have a very old cat who isn't really conducive to taking for a stroll around Epping Forest. I always had dogs around me as a youngster and it was something I wanted to learn more about, and I am glad I did. I just need a dog now. Despite having more time on my hands, I somehow didn't manage to declutter my house. In fact, I have ended up with even more stuff than I began the first lockdown with. Who am I going to call? Our cover stars, the Style Sisters. The two, who are West Essex locals, are bona fide big hitters on the 'net and are now releasing their first book. I decided it was time to take some notes. Of course, while I have been chasing after Fido, there have been lots of local businesses who have been desperately struggling to stay afloat during this time. It's heartening to hear positive news from some this month, as well as others who actually launched during a pandemic. Thank you, too, for the lovely feedback on our first ever issue. I hope we have backed it up with the difficult 'second album' too.

t the time of writing, the sun is finally shining down on us and summer has arrived with the promise of better things just around the corner. One thing in particular that I am super excited to introduce you to is West Essex family-owned events and entertainment business, Sing It. Established in 2018, Sing It is truly home grown and has impressively gained some real support from local families and businesses. The team have a real eye for detail and cover everything from bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings and birthdays through to baby showers and christenings, there really seems to be no job too big or too small. With so many changing restrictions they have proven their resilience through adapting their business as much as possible to cater for even the most intimate of dinner parties or garden parties. Chris Reid, the head of events, always has a smile on his face and time for a chat at any time to discuss any celebration. The ability to create anything in any setting is quite astonishing from these guys. TRAI L As well as their shop in Loughton, Prestige Pawnbrokers are seemingly taking over the UK. Founder James Constantinou reflects on TV fame and why his business has touched a nerve By MARK KEBBLE

A

ny avid viewer of Posh Pawn, which was a huge hit on Channel 4, will know of some of the more outlandish items that James Constantinou and his team have dealt with in the past – even the publicity shots involve planes and luxury cars. But speaking to the founder of Prestige Pawnbrokers, it’s rather touching when the subject turns to the most unique thing that has crossed his path. “I’ve seen some wonderful works of art and some truly beautiful pieces of jewellery, but there are some items that are perhaps not as valuable to the collector’s markets that are, in my opinion, priceless,” he says. “We were presented with some very personal letters handwritten by the former Rolling Stones member, Brian Jones. They contained touching thoughts and personal details relating to his relationship and his career as an up-and-coming band

member. The letters were addressed to Brian’s mother and father prior to the band becoming famous and were found in the attic of a house that was owned by his parents. Brian was sadly found dead not too long after these letters were written, which made the content all the more poignant. The band are a massive piece of British rock culture and therefore these letters are priceless, they simply cannot be replaced.” It’s a small window into Constantinou’s world, one that has grown exponentially over the last decade. Prestige Pawnbrokers have had a shop in Loughton since 2018, which also highlights another part of the business some may not be expecting. “After spending some time there and taking a look at what else was around, I knew that it was going to hit the ground running – and it did,” he says. “Bags are a big part of the business [including at the Loughton shop] and we are the biggest buyers of high-end luxury handbags in the country. People often forget that we are not just money lenders, we buy

and sell all of the luxury assets that we loan against. On sale at any one of our stores are many high-end luxury brands such as Rolex, Patek, Cartier, Chanel, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton, to name but a few.” Constantinou explains that, when he thought up the idea for the business, he hadn’t actually visited a pawnbrokers. “In a funny way that was an asset,” he says. “My main inspiration was of course to make money, but it wasn’t just that alone. Another major factor was the excitement in respect of what we were about to embark on. The idea that I could get to see the most wonderful assets and meet some amazing characters whilst earning a few quid was beyond my wildest dreams.” Google pawnbroking and it’s fair to say not everything about them online is positive, so how did Constantinou want Prestige Pawnbrokers to be different? “I didn’t just want to be different,” he answers. “I wanted to create something that worked, as well something that was better than what was on offer – and I A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

CULTURE • INTERVIEW THE SHOPS ARE RETAILERS TOO

“The pawnbroking sector is now considered to be a viable alternative to the high street bank”

YOU WILL FIND SOME SURPRISING ITEMS INSIDE

think we achieved that and lots more. The pawnbroking sector is now considered to be a viable alternative to the high street bank, and in many respects for short-term borrowing it is actually cheaper. On the whole, regulated lenders in the pawnbroking sector are honourable people providing a good service to those in need of liquidity.” So how does it all work? “It really couldn’t be easier,” Constantinou insists. “Bring items to one of our stores with some identification and proof of address, and we will loan you money secured against the items based on their second hand value. There is no need for monthly payments, but the capital and interest can be paid back at any point during the seven-month contract. Once the capital and interest have been paid, you are free to come and collect your goods. You will only pay interest whilst the loan is outstanding, for example if you have a loan for one month, then the borrower will pay for one month of borrowing. This is why loaning against our assets is really simple and cost effective.” It was an approach that certainly caught the eye of Channel 4. “I’d like to say that GROUP SHOT FROM THE POSH PAWN TV SHOW

my tap dancing skills were so mind blowing that the director couldn’t really refuse me,” Constantinou laughs. “The truth of the matter is that Channel 4 wanted to make a documentary on alternative money lending and following their research they found us.” Given his dark good looks and engaging personality, did he notice much of a change once Posh Pawn started going out? “I wasn’t chased up the road by hordes of screaming women throwing their underwear at me, if that’s what you are getting at,” he says. “Although, my parents did start inviting me to their BBQs. There was no negativity, and apart from some very nice people introducing themselves to me and saying that they enjoyed the show, I can’t really think of much else to report. One of the biggest things that came from the show and the feedback following its airing was that the public wanted to use the services of people they felt they could trust. I really do believe that being up front with people and doing exactly what you say you are going to do goes a long way, especially in a world where so often that is no longer the case.” Despite a host of lockdowns, Prestige Pawnbrokers have opened another three stores around London, with an additional one soon to open in Richmond, Surrey. It feels like the sky is the limit for Constantinou and his team. “Who knows?” he says when asked about what’s next. “Cyber Pawn, 24 Hour Pawn, The Great British Pawn off… There is so much more to be done and so many untapped markets. The next couple of years are going to be interesting, that’s for sure.” prestigepawnbrokers.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

VISION The Style Sisters, aka West Essex locals Charlotte Reddington and Gemma Lilly, on how they are determined to help us all live an organised and stylish life

t’s remarkable how far the Style Sisters have come in a short space of time. It was just two years ago that busy mums Gemma Lilly and Charlotte Reddington decided to join forces and make full use of their fashion and interiors backgrounds to form a unique service that help organise homes with some serious style. They now have more than 200,000 fans online, no doubt helped by a growing celebrity fanbase after working with the likes of Amanda Holden, Stacey Solomon and Rochelle Humes. Now it’s time for their debut book launch, called rather simply Style Sisters. Their aim is to make you feel good, equip you with a timeless approach to cutting out the clutter that weighs you down, and make room for clarity, space and zen. We got them together to tell Absolutely West Essex a little more about what we can expect…

By MARK KEBBLE

We met at school at sixth form college and both pursued the same subjects. We have both always had a thing for organising. Even as young girls we’d always be at friends’ houses moving things around and organising and tidying up! The Style Sisters came about when we were on a night out. We were both fed up with our respective paths and decided to merge interiors and fashion together. From the very get go, there was a real demand for what we were doing. We hit a niche and instantly just became a hit with celebrities, which we’re so grateful for because it really helped the growth of our business. When we’re first doing a home detox, the first thing we do is pull everything out. Not one corner is left unturned.

and that you love, but most importantly it’s functional. We’ll create mood boards, do space planning, design concepts and manage the project from start to finish. We’re proud of all of our projects to be honest because we put so much love and heart into everything we do to make it absolutely perfect. But some of the ones we absolutely loved are Rochelle’s playroom, Ferne’s dressing room and Danielle Armstrong’s living room.

“It's a window into our world because it gives you all the tools to be able to work how we work and become a Style Sister yourself”

The biggest challenge we find in homes is when they have too much stuff, aren’t willing to have a really good detox, and they haven’t got much storage. It’s like a giant puzzle. We do manage to figure it out – it’s about being savvy with the space. We love interior design. When we do our interior design service (along with the organising), we absolutely love it because we can take into consideration all of our client’s things, and make sure everything has a home. It’s a real USP for our business. We offer a full interior design service, too. Interior design service with the Style Sisters means us coming in, assessing the space, assessing your style and creating a room that represents you,

Everything has led to the book. We were getting a lot of questions from people that might not be able to get us in, wanting lots of different tips and tricks, and we just thought it would be the best possible way to reach a bigger audience and allow people to implement how we work into their own homes, with them being able to do it themselves. It’s definitely a window into our world because it gives you all the tools to be able to work how we work and become a Style Sister yourself. It also gives you a bit of background knowledge on why we started, what we do, and how we do what we do. The book is for absolutely everyone. No matter your age, no matter your gender and it gives you the tools to be able to live a ‘stylish and organised life’. We both still live in Loughton and Epping. For us it’s home, our children go to school there, we just love the community aspect and it’s just home for us. Essex girls through and through! A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

These past few weeks have seen an explosion of new collections hit the high street, and with so much choice, it has not been easy to pick my favourites this month. When it comes to fashion designers, some of my current favourites are based over the pond in the USA, but their collections are now accessible to us here in the UK in the form of two collaborations that have hit the UK high street. Let's start with H&M, who never fail to deliver with their sought after collaborations with coveted designers. This month sees another one launch as they join forces with LA-based designers The Brock Collection. Their designs have been seen on the likes of Meghan Markle and Margot Robbie, and their signature style is romantic/LA cool, focusing on floral print, ribbon ties, soft denim and corsetry. The H&M collection features all these elements at high street prices, the floral dresses are perfect for everyday wear and the jeans have that LA relaxed vibe. My favourites from the collection are pretty much every piece, but if I had to choose one must have I'd say the quilted

STRIPED RUFFLED DRESS, £160 TRACY REESE FOR ANTHROPOLOGIE

“There has been an explosion of new collections” denim bag with chain detail and floral lining is a great way to own an affordable piece by The Brock Collection. Next up is Detroit-based designer Tracy Reese. Her signature style is bold colours, unique print and pieces that embody joy and femininity. Seen on the likes of Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Michelle Obama, her pieces can now be bought from high street mecca Anthropologie. Entitled Plenty by Tracy Reese, the collection is truly stunning with beautiful summer colours, bold prints and feminine detailing, and with a plus size range also available, it’s a collection designed for everyone. Now let’s talk shoes, as the high street has not forgotten to extend their summer

collections to our feet. We are actually spoilt for choice at the moment with sandals and sliders. Rope detailing, pearl embellishment and trek styling is at the forefront of SS21 footwear, with ASOS, H&M and Zara having some of the best offerings at really great prices. Summer jeans are a must have and Zara have a fabulous selection, my favourite are detailed with gold buttons, transforming them into a more glamorous pair for those summer cocktails. Summer accessorising is vital to put the finishing touch to any outfit: bright colour and gold is currently being embraced within my collections so do take a peek for endless choice. High street swimwear has grown in design over the last few years with extended choice for those that prefer a one piece to a bikini. This year there are some fabulous swimsuits that have taken inspiration from the Brigitte Bardot era. With sculpted design and form flattering fabric, bikinis are given a run for their money.

JEWELS Military hats like you have never seen them before… Glitter Gals’ founder, Zara Dipple, on how her hen do inspired a business By MARK KEBBLE

28

Q Glitter Gals only started in 2019: did you ever imagine it would take off the way it has done? A Both yes and no! I’ve always hoped and believed that one day I’d have a successful business, but I guess you never really know if you’re onto a winner or not at the start of a new venture. I definitely never imagined that Glitter Gals would do so well in such a short space of time. I feel so blessed and thankful every day that it has. Q What was the idea behind launching Glitter Gals? A It was my own hen do back in 2019 and I wanted to make a hat for it. One thing led to another and we started making hats to sell. The rest is history! Q Why the military style of hat as the focal point? A There’s something about wearing a military hat that makes you feel strong,

one of our hats for the very first time. The Instragram page went crazy, I had never experienced anything like it before. After that everything went from strength to strength and orders started coming in thick and fast.

Q When did you realise the business idea was a winner? A It would probably be at the start of 2020 when we had an influencer wear

Q How much has your celebrity following helped grow the business? A An incredible amount. And having our hats on Geordie OGs and TOWIE has been amazing for the business too. I still pinch myself that the hats have been on TV!

THE EVER POPULAR MILITARY HAT STYLE

Q How does the process of

making a new hat work? A It’s a pretty long and tricky process, which I’ve managed to get down to a fine art now. Every hat is decorated by hand, each diamanté added one by one. They are very detailed and I have extremely high standards so everything added to them must be perfectly placed.

Q The bespoke creations aside, what else do you offer? A We also make our own t-shirts and hoodies for brides and their hen party – they are super bridal and cute! We have some other exciting products currently in development and hopefully on the way very soon, but I can’t say too much about them yet. Q As we hit the summer months, what’s most in demand at Glitter Gals? A Hats, hats and more hats! Our busiest time is March-August, so it’s literally been non-stop. Q What are your hopes for the future? A It would be amazing to grow a big

team. We are in need of a much larger space too. We have new products on the horizon so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they will be as successful as the hats. The sky’s the limit, I’m a total dreamer and I always aim high. glittergals.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

T H E Z O O M E F F E C T Rejuvenating interest in cosmetic surgery By EVE HERBERT

“A consequence of meetings over Zoom has been a renewed awareness of how we look”

W

e have been living with Covid-19 for well over a year now. The pandemic has impacted everyone in different ways as people have learnt to adapt the way they live their lives. Face masks, social distancing and Zoom meetings have all become the norm. A consequence of working from home and having to conduct meetings over Zoom has been a renewed awareness of how we look. It’s hard to ignore puffy eyes and jowls when spending so much time looking at your own reflection. This has directly led to an increase in enquiries relating to cosmetic surgery to address wrinkles, jowls, scars, skin moles, eye lids and eye bags as well as excess skin through weight-loss. The time and isolation from others has afforded people with the chance to reflect on their appearance and even the appearance of others. Perhaps noticing a birthmark on the skin of their child for the first time. Or maybe they have made the decision their family is complete and want their body back. Now that life is returning to some form of normality (at least for now), people are empowered to make positive changes to their lives. Be it getting fit, eating healthily or looking at cosmetic surgery to address problem areas. If it is the latter, there are both surgical and nonsurgical options available and consultant plastic surgeon, Chris Abela will be happy to discuss these in more detail. Chris is experienced in body contouring

and cosmetic surgery and runs a private practice with clinics in Marylebone, Chelsea and Wimbledon. In June 2021, Chris opened a new clinic at 84 Harley Street. Chris’ ethos and the team’s overarching philosophies encompass: • a safe and evidence-based approach to the medicine and surgery provided • holistic and honest consultations to enable patients with a better quality of life, long after they have been discharged • providing the right infrastructure and personnel to take care of a patient and fully support them for the duration of their journey All this is done with discretion in mind. As we continue to come out of lockdown, Chris and his team are taking all possible precautions to protect patients and are proceeding with extreme caution and care. STRESS buster

tress - we experience it on a daily basis. And while it may be difficult to avoid, there are ways we can learn how to manage the stress in our lives. Stress from feelings of anger, fear or frustration are an unavoidable part of day to day life, but if it is excessive or long term then it can have devastating effects on our mental and physical wellbeing. Stress stimulates the adrenal glands, which release adrenaline and cortisol hormones into the blood to gear the body for action; great if we are in danger, but when this is stuck in a continuous cycle, excessive levels of stress hormones cause problems that show up as anxiety, headaches, stiffness, insomnia and digestive issues. How we think and respond will have a direct effect upon the body, either in a negative or positive way, which means that we can be active participants in our own wellbeing. The mind-body connection is the link between our thoughts and emotions (the mind), and the physical which includes all the systems of the body through to the cells. We can’t always avoid stress, but we always have the power to choose how we respond to it if we have the right tools. At Tria Woman we understand that every woman has her own unique needs and experiences, and supporting the counselling process with individual lifestyle, nutrition and mindfulness practices creates a tailored approach which honours mind, body and soul. hat if we told you that you could have a facial massage in one hour and at the end of it you will look ten years younger? Well, that’s exactly what happens when you visit Nicola Bellamy, aka The Face Fitness Coach. The Harley Street and Loughtonbased expert holistic facialist to celebrities, actors, and models, Bellamy is renowned for having the magic touch when it comes to sculpting faces. As a fully qualified beauty therapist, qualified in natural face sculpting massage and Gua Sha, Bellamy believes that the power of touch is greater than any machine when it comes to relaxing in a treatment room. “We all want to feel confident and beautiful in our own skin, to look and feel glowing, healthy and radiant looking, from our teenage through to our menopausal years,” Bellamy tells us. “Through holistic facials and intuitive skincare powered by the natural healing ability of plant-based products and touch, I’m here to help you stay in tune with yourself, to remain calm, stress free, happy and radiant. “Recently I studied the effects menopause had on the skin; surprisingly it causes many changes,” she continues. “For example, your body stops making as much collagen; you lose some fat under your skin and your

skin’s elasticity drops. That, combined with dryness caused by hormonal changes, can cause sagging – especially around the neck, jawline, and cheeks, fine lines and wrinkles. Our faces are a wonderful indicator of what is going on deeper below the surface.” What is Gua Sha? “It is a natural, alternative therapy that involves scraping your skin with a massage tool to improve your circulation. I gently scrape your skin with short or long strokes to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue, which increases blood flow. I work intuitively with you to re-energise and plump your skin, addressing the signs of ageing, awakening your skin’s own natural healing power. Each of my intuitive treatments are made unique to your specific needs, and will leave you feeling deeply rejuvenated with healthy skin.” What’s clear is that this is more than just a facial: it is a nurturing, yet dynamic experience for your skin, mind and soul. “A lengthy consultation always takes place before your visit and a shorter one on arrival,” Bellamy explains. “This enables me to read you, read your face, your skin and your wellbeing. We then discuss the accurate treatment to suit you. I then go on to double cleanse massage and mask massage your face, neck and décolletage. It’s a very intense massage. I also practice silent sessions if requested, this is where we have the consultation and then I leave the

room for my client to get into my warm cosy treatment bed. When I come back into the room, I commence the session without talking, right up until the end of the session when I tell the client to take some deep breaths and to reawaken the mind and body.” Why the face as her specialty? “I’ve been asked that many times when I am a fully qualified practitioner and I always say, focus on one area and master your craft. I love to read my client’s face and without them even telling me, I can see and tell how they are feeling and what facial sculpting massage they will need from me.” All of the products used are certified organic and Bellamy is also an ambassador for Kate McIver Skincare, Lumity Skincare, Inika Organic Skincare and also the Hayou Method. She practices at The Harper Clinic in Harley Street, working with Dr Shahzadi Harper, at her Perimenopause and Weight Management and Skincare Clinic, but has lived in Essex all her life, particularly in Loughton, Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. “Being confident and knowledgeable is key,” she concludes, “also taking time with your clients to get to know their specific needs and treating them individually in each session, rather than giving everyone the same treatment. We are all different with different needs.” thefacefitnesscoach.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

FOOD & DRINK • INTERVIEW

THE PRESENTATION IS STUNNING

T

urkey has always been high on my go to places for a summer holiday. I love everything about it: the constant sun, the friendly people, and the fabulous fresh food. I may not be able to get a guarantee of Vitamin D visiting Lokkum, but the rest of the list can be comfortably ticked off. Lokkum has been open in South Woodford for just over four years now and since day one have offered something a little different. The building itself stands out, literally, on its own plot, with the restaurant’s name emblazoned on the sides. Inside, the décor is modern, from the contemporary chandeliers to the furnishings. “We want to be stylish and luxurious,” says the restaurant’s

Summer Ryan, who is here to greet me. “We want this to be a place to celebrate a special occasion. It’s modern and relaxed, but also perfect for families too.” A first glance at the menu and you will feel it covers off all the Turkish classics, but you need to delve a little deeper. “We provide high quality food following original recipes handed down from our ancestors in Turkey,” Ryan explains. It feels like an experience, especially with the chefs in full view of a watching audience. “It adds excitement,” Ryan says of the kitchen’s central location. “It is also transparent, giving customers a real insight into how their meals are prepared and to see the chefs first hand.” The food here is terrific. A lot of it is grill-based – “This is an authentic way of cooking from our home country,” Ryan explains – and their choice of steaks is

“We want this to be a place to celebrate a special occasion”

SUMMER RYAN

certainly a tough one to whittle down, so the mixed grill is a good option. The beef lokkum is an intriguing one, apparently a real celebrity favourite, succulent steak fillet pieces served up with crispy chips and steamed wild broccoli. I always loved eating fish by the coast in Turkey, and at Lokkum they don’t shirk on the seafood on offer – the monkfish is certainly one to try. Presentation throughout is exemplary, as if those chefs are delighted to be putting on a show. It’s only been a month or so since we have been allowed back inside our local restaurants, and it’s clearly been a long time coming for Ryan and her team. “It’s been incredibly tough,” she says on the past year, “but that’s just like many other businesses during this global pandemic. It feels like we have bounced back well. There’s been a great response from the community, and it’s been good to see many returning happy customers.” Summer holidays remain a conscientious subject, but it helps when you have something like Lokkum right on our doorstep. And the name? “It means Turkish delight,” Ryan says. Never has something been more apt. LO K KU M Woodford New Road South Woodford, E18 2QD 020 8220 1018 • lokkum.co.uk

CourgetteFlower Risotto Serves 6

I love risotto. It’s a dish we always eat at home and have on my restaurant menu. Ever popular, it’s also a dish that you can eat throughout the year. There is something so wonderful about courgettes and their beautiful flowers, so very versatile, too. This lovely recipe is just delicious and something different, using up every part of the courgette and flower. It reminds me of long summer days, when supper is eaten outside and when the time seems endless. At this time of the year, sweet broad (fava) beans and peas are delicious and adding them to this risotto at the end just brings even more summery high notes.

INGREDIENTS • 10 courgette (zucchini) flowers with baby courgettes still attached • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 400 g (14 oz/scant 2 cups) Carnaroli or Arborio risotto rice • 1.5 litres (50 fl oz/6 cups) vegetable stock, hot • 60 ml (2 fl oz/¼ cup) white wine • 100 g (3 1⁄2 oz) Parmesan, grated, or to taste • Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh basil leaves, to serve

Monkfish, Cornish Chorizo

and sun blush tomatoes on rosemary skewers Serves 8

METHOD 1 Detach the flowers from the courgettes, remove the stamens and gently wipe the flowers clean. Slice the courgettes into rounds.

2 Heat the olive oil in a large pan and fry the garlic and onion until softened. Add the courgette flowers and stir for 1 minute, then add the rice and stir until well coated in the oil. 3 Pour over a ladleful of stock and stir until it is absorbed. Repeat until the stock is finished. 4 Add the courgettes and stir through, then add the white wine. Cook for a further 5 minutes, then remove from the heat. 5 Add Parmesan and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve garnished with basil leaves and extra Parmesan.

• 100 ml (3 1⁄2 fl oz/scant 1/2 cup) olive oil • Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper To serve • Handful of rocket (arugula) leaves • Hot buttered Cornish new potatoes • Mixed leaf salad with edible flowers

METHOD Monkfish, or lotte in French, is known as the poor man’s lobster. It is a delicious, robust and wonderful ingredient that I love to cook and eat. It works so well with bolder flavours, such as curries, or can be cooked over fire or even refined by serving as a ceviche. Here, the combination of monkfish, chorizo and sun blush tomatoes is delicious. Threading them on to rosemary skewers is pretty and adds a depth of flavour to the fish.

INGREDIENTS • 1 x 200 g (7 oz) jar sun blush tomatoes, drained, reserving the oil • 1 medium chorizo, about 225g (8 oz), cut into 1 cm (1⁄2 in) rounds • 650 g (1 lb 7 oz) monkfish fillet, cut into chunks • 12 long rosemary sprigs, plus extra leaves for sprinkling

1 Preheat a barbecue or grill (broiler) to high. 2 Place the sun blush tomatoes in a large bowl and add the sliced chorizo. Using a skewer, pierce a hole through each piece of monkish, then toss in the bowl with the tomatoes and chorizo. Thread alternately onto rosemary skewers, allowing 3 pieces of each ingredient on each skewer. 3 Barbecue or grill (broil) the monkfish skewers on all sides, keeping them moving, for a total of 6 minutes, or until browned at the edges. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper and rosemary leaves. 4 Lay the grilled monkfish skewers on rocket leaves and serve with hot buttered Cornish new potatoes and a kitchen leaf salad with summer flowers.

Crimp the edges of the foil together to make a parcel, but just before sealing, pour in the wine. Seal tightly and bake the fish in the oven for 50–60 minutes. 4 Allow the fish to cool in the parcel, then gently peel off the skin and serve cold, garnished with thinly sliced cucumber, watercress, lemon slices and citrus mayo. Note Leftover salmon can be used the next day in a salad with Cornish new potatoes, dill and mayo. TARRAGON MAYO – Serves 6 • 3 egg yolks • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 250 ml (8 1⁄2 fl oz/1 cup) sunflower oil • A handful of fresh tarragon • Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Whole Baked Salmon with cucumber, watercress and mayonnaise for days Serves 8

On summer days, my mother Lucy was always the best at bringing everyone together. This recipe of whole baked salmon is somewhat retro but it is a wonderful dish for the middle of a table, served alongside Cornish new potatoes with herbs and crème fraîche, bowls of garden leaves and wildflowers. Finish the meal with English strawberries, meringues

and cream. Think of warm days, with Champagne by the glass, or chilled rosé. Days when life seems uncomplicated and simple.

INGREDIENTS • 100 ml (3 1⁄2 fl oz/scant 1⁄2 cup) sunflower oil, for brushing • 1 whole salmon, 2–3 kg (4–6 lb), gutted, cleaned and scaled • 1 large sprig of flat-leaf parsley • 2 lemons, cut into sunshine rounds • 2 bay leaves • 300 ml (10 fl oz/1¼ cups) white wine

1 Place the egg yolks in a food processor and add the lemon juice, mustard and a good pinch of sea salt. Whiz until just combined. With the motor still running, slowly pour the oil through the funnel in a fine, slow stream until all the oil is incorporated and it has emulsified. 2 Remove the tarragon leaves from the stalks and roughly chop. As you chop, the delicious fragrance will be released. Fold through the mayo, taste and season as needed.

For the garnish • Thin cucumber slices • Watercress • Lemon rounds • Citrus Mayo

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan/400°F/Gas 6). 2 Take 2 large sheets of kitchen foil and place on top of each other in a roasting tin (pan). Brush oil over both pieces of foil, place the salmon on

ointreau has released a margarita cocktail experience with a limited edition paintby-numbers set to create your very own Acapulco-inspired Cointreau margarita print at home. The margarita was the nation's favourite lockdown cocktail, apparently. Originally created when Dallas socialite Margaret Sames mixed her two favourite spirits, Cointreau and tequila, together with lime juice while holidaying in Acapulco in 1948, this original recipe has stood the test of time. and this kit comes with everything you need. Two fluted margarita tumblers, a lime squeezer, a bottle of Cointreau, lots of limes and some sea salt come with a canvas and lots of paint colours for the paint-by-numbers project. Note that this is no child's activity and takes quite some time to complete. So it's ideal for lockdowns, or rainy days – and the result is something to display with pride.

WORLD OF DISCOVERY TINZI’S

Research shows that within the first few weeks of life, infants develop the ability to perceive reds, oranges, yellows and greens. Enabling babies to discover a mix of intense colours encourages strong neural connections in the brain, which is at the heart of local business, Tinzi’s. Read more about them on page 64.

ou may have read in last month’s issue of Absolutely West Essex that after 15 years together, three house moves, three children and a dog, my partner and I decided to get married and organised a small intimate wedding in just four weeks. We were the first wedding out of lockdown at the stunning art deco Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green and the day was just magical. There was no honeymoon, though, as I was straight into running my football camp at local Debden Park High School.

TEENAGERS: STAYING CONNECTED

As my children get older and more independent (I have a 14-year-old boy, and 12 and 8-year-old girls), I find myself thinking about different ways to stay connected with them. Last week I had a coffee with my friend Sharmeen, who is a family and youth life-coach specialising in teens and children. She highlighted that I must understand how much one communicates and shares really is dependent upon individual personalities, and I need to recognise this fact and ensure that I give each of my children non-intense one on one time to create the opportunity to chat freely. My chat with Sharmeen also made me fondly remember our family dinners during lockdown; when busy social lives were non-existent, we spent a lot of time chatting around the dinner table, something that has become less frequent. Scheduling time to eat together makes total sense, even if just a few nights a week, sitting down as a family to review the day that’s passed and plan for the day that’s coming would definitely help to all stay connected.

SO. MUCH. FOOD.

As a family of five we go through a lot of food. My partner and I chose to follow a plant-based diet nearly four years ago now and whilst we did try to involve the children too, to be honest, it didn’t work. Instead for the children we have cut out most dairy (apart from chocolate, of course). Morning cereal is now eaten with soya or oat milk, and ham sandwiches have been replaced with marmite or peanut butter. Small steps to a positive change… I think as long as you can avoid processed foods as much as possible, you will not only feel healthier and have more energy, you will find that mum guilt levels reduce too. The Plant Kitchen range at Marks and Spencer in Loughton is best for vegan convenience food – the burgers are unreal – plus when dining out (now that we can again!) the vegan bruschetta and spaghetti dish at 8 Rocks Café and Wine Bar is delicious, plus they have a huge selection of organic vegan wines too - yum! LITTLE

Conversation Charlotte Fuller, of Haslers, reflects on the community and families coming together

Q Have you been involved a lot with charities over the past 16 months? A I am a member of the Haslers Foundation Committee. Since it was founded almost a decade ago, the Haslers Foundation has managed to raise more than £180,000 for good causes in and around Essex and London. We found that during the pandemic, even though charities have most likely needed our help more than ever, we were in fact not receiving hardly any donations or grant requests. We decided to take it upon ourselves to start contacting local charities which we felt really needed our help the most. Q What has the pandemic shown families do you think? A I think the pandemic has shown families that they need to support one another more than ever. I, for one, have a very strong bond with my family and we always make sure we are there for each other. It was really hard going from seeing my family 3-4 times a week to then being isolated at home, trying to work from home, homeschooling and running the household in general. I found that on some of the toughest days, all I wanted to do was just go to bed and not speak to anyone. But in fact, it was on those days that I found I needed contact with my family members the most. I would often call or Facetime my parents or one of my sisters, and after a 15-minute chat I found all tension had been relieved as we were laughing and more often than not enjoying a glass of rose in the sun whilst we chatted over the phone. I think if this pandemic has taught me anything, it’s to not take seeing my family for granted. haslers.com

A further continuation of remarkable charity work has been accomplished at Avon House School this year, with the help of Eden from Foundation Two and her inventive idea to run a sponsored jump for Unicef’s ‘Give the world a shot’ Campaign. Eden vowed that for every £1 that was raised, she would complete one bounce on the trampoline, and the whole school came together to get involved. Overall, the total raised by Eden was nearly £800. avonhouseschool.co.uk

‘Why is Nita Upside Down?’ is a beautifully written journey, explaining the feeling of sometimes fearing others won’t accept us because of things that make us unique, whether that be looking different to others, thinking differently, or having different interests. This wonderful children’s book celebrates individuality and encourages selfconfidence in children, using the realistic viewpoint that everyone is different in some way, and this is undoubtedly our strength.

THE WHALE WHO WANTED MORE By Rachel Bright

-

Here, Bright creates a sparkling rhyming tale of a whale on a quest to find the one perfect object that will make him feel complete. Humphrey roams the ocean, gathering endless undersea treasure as he goes. However, no matter how many goodies he accumulates, he still doesn’t feel content. This is a beautiful story, encouraging sharing and kindness, with a heart-warming emphasis on the concept of friendship, leaving the lingering message; could it be friendship, and not possessions, that will make this whale’s heart sing?

TOGETHER Jacqueline Job, head of Normanhurst School, part of the Oak-Tree Group, reflects on how teachers and pupils have surpassed all expectations this year By MARK KEBBLE

Q Please tell us about Normanhurst School… A Normanhurst is a privately-owned independent all-through school in North Chingford, for boys and girls aged 2½ to 16. It is a small school with a big vision, where pupils of all abilities, aptitudes and social backgrounds thrive and achieve. We offer a high standard of education and a fulfilling learning experience in a happy, secure and caring environment. Q Looking at the past 16 months or so, have you ever experienced a period like this in education? A I have been teaching for over 20 years and have never lived through a period like this in education. It has been an incredibly challenging time for schools, families and communities. We have seen our parents, teachers and pupils demonstrate such resilience and determination to make things happen and think differently to make this a valuable, impactful and progressive year. In addition, it has been a reminder that we are not alone. We have a strong sense of unity within the Oak-Tree Group and no challenge is too great.

62

Q How did Normanhurst School cope with the lockdowns? A I am incredibly proud of the Normanhurst community. There is a strong feeling and culture that we can do anything we put our minds to. I am amazed at how resourceful, passionate and resilient a school community we have been, still creating ways to enrich and support the pupils’ education. We offered a timetable of Zoom lessons, academic and pastoral tutorials and assemblies, as well opportunities to exercise, be creative and socialise with peers and adults. It was fantastic to see all of our children doing what they could to keep going and do as well as possible given the extraordinary circumstances. Q How did your teachers cope with working from home? A The teachers and support staff have been fantastic, still full of energy and passionate for learning. Teachers have adapted their lessons to ensure pupils across the age range receive lessons which are exciting and filled with stretch and challenge tasks that made for excellent engagement from pupils. It has shown how resourceful we can all be from home, celebrating annual events,

providing pastoral and academic support and even providing mental health walks through this period. Teaching assistants continued to provide support in class and additional sessions were offered to ensure that pupils were reading and developing their understanding and comprehension. I am incredibly proud of the staff who have worked tirelessly to make every day count and who have made this a positive, successful period, full of memories. Q Did your pupils surprise you in any way? A I am always surprised at how pupils

cope with change. Their honesty and determination to succeed is always so refreshing. It has also enabled us to foster and nurture our pupils to be more independent. Moreover, it is wonderful that even during the pandemic our pupils continued to think of others, whether through fundraising for the local food bank, collecting Easter eggs for a local domestic violence refuge or creating an online read video for the adults at the local Spinney care home. Ultimately, we want all our pupils to be good, thoughtful citizens, and they prove that they are well on their way to achieving this with our support. And of

routines was outstanding. Ultimately, the best thing about a school is the students, and we have some pretty amazing ones!

Q What’s the greatest thing about having everyone back at school? A There is nothing more exciting than hearing the buzz and energy of staff and pupils being in school. The conversations from staff to pupils, parents to staff and pupil to pupil are enriching and diverse. I often walk around school and pop into lessons and I thrive on this energy, it’s pretty special and difficult to describe. Everyone was pleased to return to school; careful consideration and attention was given to re-establish positive learning habits, pupils played together in their bubbles like they had never been away, and the way in which they threw themselves back into classroom

Q What are you hopes for the rest of 2021? A Our hopes for the rest of this academic

year are for the entire community to be safe, healthy and happy. We are very lucky to have such supportive parents, and passionate hard working teachers and support staff, who really care about the pupils. We know that whatever life throws at us we will be able to make it through together. NORMANHURST SCHOOL 68-74 Station Road, North Chingford, E4 7BA 020 8529 4307 normanhurstsch.co.uk

TINAZ & XERXES MEHTA

“Eye-catching, bold creations help babies explore and nurture their inquisitive minds” BABY CUDDLE BLANKET

D

ROSE BIBS

id you know that the colour blue is one of the last colours to become visible to babies? And that it’s actually a myth that babies are only drawn to black and white? In fact, clinical research into babies’ visual development shows that muted pastel tones aren’t visible till nearly a year old – and yet the majority of baby products are in light bland pastels. Setting out to challenge the norm, break with the bland and disrupt the palette of pastels, Tinzi’s are injecting a healthy dose of fun, bright, bold and vibrant colours into the pastel baby market. They’ve certainly set a bold challenge, but not without merit. Their new baby-accessory concept is based upon independent research, and rooted in the science of colour and infant neural development, from university-based baby labs. Early during the first lockdown, Tinzi’s co-founders Tinaz and Xerxes Mehta received the wonderful news that they were expecting baby number three. Whilst digging out old baby items, they re-discovered a beautiful, brightly coloured silk stuffed tortoise. This had previously sat on the changing table for the first two babies, who were always engaged and enamoured with it from birth. “We’d never given it much thought, but a little research made us realize that newborn babies can actually perceive colours such as red and green, if they are vibrant and sufficiently saturated,” explains Tinaz. This was the inspiration to form Tinzi’s, a new

sustainable and ethical baby essentials boutique, based in Chingford. Selecting high quality soft and absorbent organic fabrics with bright bold colours and patterns, they create everyday essentials, used by parents, to care for little ones, including bibs, teethers, feeding towels, and blankets, to name a few. Eye-catching, bold creations help babies explore and nurture their inquisitive minds. There are exciting times ahead for this colourful brand who are keen to disrupt and invigorate an otherwise staid baby market. Tinzi’s want to help inspire and enhance infant engagement, on a fun-filled journey of exploration and play; inspired by nature and backed by science to help families have the best start in life. It begs the question, does the gender stereotype of boys being surrounded by blue pastel hues from birth, deprive them any meaningful interest in support of neural development? Whatever the answer, Tinzi’s are on a mission to empower parents to be brave with colour and aid their little ones’ from the first days of life. Tinaz encourages that we “put down our mobile phones, lock eyes with our little ones and share in the moments that pass all too quickly. Bond with your baby, establishing a solid foundation for wellbeing and future learning. Specially curated fabrics will certainly put a smile on your little one’s face, hopefully inspiring and teasing out the playful side in you too”. tinzis.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

BALL

A Year 6 pupil at St Aubyn’s writes about how the school has helped her continue developing her love for the beautiful game

F

By HADIA HARIF

ootball is great fun, healthy and an energetic game; but what is most important is that it is a team game. In order to win, every single person has to work their very hardest to be able to score. In addition to that, this fantastic sport is not only enjoyable, it is creative. On the field you have the freedom to display an abundance of skills to keep the possession of the ball, which strengthens the team and their players. I started playing football at my local state school, for an after-school club. I was the only girl there, but that made me determined to ‘stick at it’ and work hard. Sometime later, I started at St Aubyn’s in Year 3 and joined the

66

girls’ football club. During this time, I noticed that my skills were developing well and I had a trial at Tottenham Ladies Academy and surprisingly got accepted. From then on, I have progressed further and now I play for West Ham Women’s Academy. Before I came to St Aubyn’s I only had the chance to play football after school and at lunchtime in my old school. I trialled for Tottenham Academy at the end of Year 3 (on my 8th birthday!), so I didn’t have much time to practice other than at school or in my back garden. St Aubyn’s have given me further opportunities to play and attend football practice with a school team. I have loved being part of the girls’ football team at St Aubyn’s as during this

HADIA HARIF

time we have progressed so much. Our brilliant football team have won many games and have helped each and every one of us become a better team player. The best thing about being in the team is having lots of fun with my friends and being able to be free and innovative on the football field. It is an honour to be team captain for our team as it has helped me mature and learn to be supportive towards my teammates. It is quite a big responsibility, but it has made me become an empathetic leader. I was over the moon when I found out that I had a sport scholarship to Forest School. Also, I was surprised to be the first girls’ footballer to get a scholarship at Forest. My ambitions for football are to carry on at West Ham and hopefully play for them one day. In the future I would also like to play for England women’s team. ST AU BY N S To find out more about what St Aubyn’s School can offer, visit staubyns.com

UNVEILING It’s a new chapter for Bluebird Care as a very special guest was on hand to open their brand new office

I “Bluebird Care were recently awarded ‘outstanding’ by CQC”

t was a day to remember for the staff and supporters of Bluebird Care on 8 June, 2021, as they welcomed the Madam Mayor of Chelmsford to mark the opening of their new Mid Essex office. Bluebird Care’s Director Kevin and his daughter Lucy McCormack were first on the scent to welcome the Madam Mayor, who was greeted by an amazing display from Essex Balloons Studio. Madam Mayor was introduced to their Registered Manager Tash Schneider, and Managers, Julia Mills, Tracy Poulson and Angela Golshan, Supervisor Lauren Lillywhite, and their HR & Recruitment officer, Blanda De Lorenzo, as well as a few of the lovely Bluebird Care Carers who took time out from their busy schedules. Lucy and Kevin McCormack held each end of the blue ribbon at the entrance of the office, Madam Mayor said a few complimentary words, before officially opening the premises. It was then time to gather under a gazebo outside the building to enjoy sandwiches, cake, soft drinks and tea, giving the opportunity for everyone to network with the Madam Mayor. It was great to showcase Bluebird’s great work, as well as hearing more about the amazing support Madam Mayor offers our local community. Bluebird Care Mid-Essex has two offices, in Chelmsford and Maldon. They support over 100 customers across both offices with home care and live-in support. They

recently were awarded ‘outstanding’ by CQC, which they are extremely proud of, and they continue to provide outstanding care and specialise in working with customers and their families who require care in their own homes. They offer a unique service of personalised care visits, from check-in visits to full live-in support, and they also have other offices in Brentwood, Southend, Redbridge, Epping and Harlow. It’s the latest in a long line of success stories for Bluebird Care. In 2004 husband and wife team, Paul and Lisa Tarsey, decided it was time to revolutionise the way care in the home was delivered. The owner of The Kitchen & Makeover Company reflects on falling in love Wo r d s L I S A L E W I S

veryone should fall in love with their new kitchen. Nothing gives greater pleasure than walking into a beautiful new kitchen that has everything you could possibly want (and more!). With the summer sunshine streaming in the window, sit down with a cup of tea and take a few moments before beginning your day. The feeling of absolute joy never changes – I know because it’s how I feel about my new kitchen. And it all started with my “Lust List” and it’s something I would recommend to everyone. What do you really want in your kitchen, what would make you feel that glow of pleasure every time you walk into it? Particularly now that kitchens are back to being the “heart of the home”, having those key design features, colour inspirations and iconic items to enhance your new kitchen is so important. Part of the excitement of choosing your new kitchen is dreaming of those little (and not so little) touches that make your kitchen personal to you.

Design embellishments

Every kitchen is different, and nowadays there are so many design choices, both in the door styles, but also in their configuration. Take a run of wall units, for instance. Instead of having standard “upright” doors on every one, you can really make your kitchen your own by choosing horizontal doors that span two or three units (they open upwards, and tend to have one door above the other). And if you have pan drawers underneath (wide, very deep drawers) it looks absolutely fabulous to match the doors on the cupboards above with the drawers below. These days, you can have frontals up to two metres wide. How fantastic is that?

Maximise your storage

Everyone’s familiar with storage, but some of the internal storage available looks so good you want to leave the door or drawer open so you can keep looking at it (that’s my excuse anyway). A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

A pantry is one of the first things that should be considered for “dream kitchen storage”. They’re certainly a show-stopping piece and will fit in all your store cupboard essentials, but they’re also very flexible and can be personalised to your needs, including slimline versions for those with more restrictive space too. A Spacetower is the ultimate in pull-out kitchen storage, and one of the main benefits is its easy access from every angle – you can reach each item with complete ease. With a variety of widths and different finishes this is an invaluable addition to the “Lust List”. And if space is at a premium, I always advise to include a MagnaSpace, which offers a strong, versatile and flexible storage solution and is built to carry vastly more weight than alternative wirework options. No clanky, wobbly pull-out larders here! What about maximising the internal drawer space with LineaPlus drawers – not only the widest, but also the deepest drawers on the market, they open to 650mm deep (that’s more than 200mm more than a standard drawer). Make the most of what you have. And there are internal drawer fittings too, which make finding everything so easy. LINEAR PLUS DRAWERS

“It feels very decadent when I open the doors and see the mirrored back and wine rack” My “Lust List” had a walk-in larder. It fits diagonally across a corner, which gives a superb amount of storage without taking up too much space. What more can anyone wish for? It’s the perfect addition for any kitchen. And I have also seen a kitchen with a small “annexe” that was fitted out as a walk in pantry too, which looked terrific. Once you have a pantry, you’ll wonder how you coped without it. The final item on my “Lust List” was a beautiful drinks cabinet – and it fits in perfectly if your kitchen is open plan. It feels very decadent when I open the doors and see the mirrored back, shelving, wine rack and drawers. There are so many ways to make the most your new kitchen, and I would encourage everyone to dream. Make sure you think carefully what you want, and if possible draw up your “Lust List” before you start looking for someone you can trust to bring your lust to life. Never settle for ordinary, make sure your new kitchen is something you will never fall out of love with. Be bold, be different, be you!

INTERIORS • INTERVIEW

Q Can you highlight two very different projects you have undertaken recently to show the breadth of your service? A We furnished the Hermès store in Harrods, using handmade metal curtains from Portugal, along with motorised curtains and blinds, and upholstering wall panels. We also recently installed ten motorised waterproof retractable roof systems with built in lights, covering restaurants and retail units next to the Olympic Park, each unit is 9m wide x 6m projection.

Q Who was Louis Posner? A Louis was born in east London 1901. His

parents were from Poland and Lithuania, and he settled in east London with his wife and two sons. When he passed in 1973 his sons took over the business. Q When Louis opened his first premises,

was his specialism window dressing from the off? A In the early 1930s Louis and his brothers started selling fabrics on a market stool in east London’s Ridley market. This evolved over the years to become various linens, towels and fabric shops around London. Q It’s nearly 70 years since the South Woodford showroom opened. Why has the business stayed here for so long? A South Woodford is a lovely residential area with easy access to central London, it’s a great base for us with our offices and workrooms on the premises, we have a strong customer base in the local area and have a built a great reputation passed on from generation to generation. Q As a company, how have you evolved since the early 1950s? A Everything we do is becoming more and more bespoke. Years ago, lots of people would make their own curtains, which is

“Lots of modern properties have vast expanses of glass that require shade and privacy” no longer the case now with architecture changing. Lots of modern properties have vast expanses of glass that require shade, privacy and temperature control. Q What services do you offer today? A All bespoke window dressings, including

lots of motorised options, and around half the business is now exterior awnings and shading solutions. Q Have you always kept ahead of the game when it comes to new technology involving windows? A Yes, sourcing products from the best suppliers from around the world has kept us on top of the game. Smart homes are now very popular with all of our motorised products being controlled from mobile or via voice command.

Q How has the business been affected since the first lockdown in March 2020? A It’s been busier than ever! With people working from home and not going on holiday, lots of people are looking to improve their homes. Q Have you noticed a lot of local support? A Now more than ever people want to shop

local rather than spending their money with larger corporate companies, and by shopping local you get a much more personal service. We are working by appointment only to offer a safe environment and a personal shopping experience. Q With summer here, what tends to be popular amongst your clientele? A Making the most of the outdoors with an awning to cover a patio and offer shade and also rain protection.

PARIS M ATC H

French fragrance and design house Diptyque celebrates 60 years By PENDLE HARTE

LUKE EDWARD HALL FOR DIPTYQUE

“The original Paris shop stocked an eclectic range of curios”

T

his year marks 60 years since Diptyque was founded in Paris. The original store at 34 boulevard SaintGermain still remains and is returning to its origins with a new ccollection ollection of homewares. The original shop stocked an eclectic range of curios, textiles and decorative objects alongside fragrance, and the reinvented collection, All that Decorates, reflects those roots. Now Diptyque has expanded its remit to include lithographed wallpaper, ornaments in coloured glass, artisanal bedspreads, ceramics and more. Diptyque’s decorative objects are imagined to enthrall the everyday by creating interiors that vibrate with life. The traditional monochrome theme creates a strong identity as this birthday celebration marks a turning point for Diptyque, bent on 'making the imaginary explode' in All that Decorates, while renewing with the eclectic spirit of its roots. Beyond the universal and timeless relevance of the task lies a flair for all things artisanal. Kinetic curves, geometric gyrations and the contrast of black on white is calculated to allow the eye to indulge in optical illusions. Shapes come together and separate to reassemble once more,

ILIO FRAGRANCE

enchanting the interior of the everyday with a touch of tantalizing trompe-l’oeil. On the table, like a puzzle come to life, coasters covered in ovals transform into playful pranksters; porcelain plates parade their sumptuous volutes of Basile’s heritage pattern; goblets in Murano glass stretch spirals into ribbons reflecting a Figuier candle’s flame as it glows from a marble podium. On the shelf, near the fragrance infuser carved from the most noble stone, rectangular trinket trays are caught in an improvisation with ovals on lanterns. Halos of candlelight accentuate the gentleness of cozy geometries. Awesome in the everyday. Shapes and scents transform the table into a personal theatre of wonders. Meanwhile, the summer fragrance collection includes a collaboration with Luke Edward Hall that brings colour and a Mediterranean feel. The artist has designed an uncharacteristically colourful and highly collectable label for beautiful new summery fragrance Ilio. New products include a citronella candle and a mosquito-repelling body spray. Happy birthday to Diptyque. diptyqueparis.com

MARK KEBBLE

Q How tough has the past 16 months or so been for the travel industry? A The travel industry has always been affected by social, economic, political, and natural occurrences, but the Covid-19 pandemic has tested us to the limit. The workload and pressure have been enormous, but there were some destinations that opened for summer 2020 in Europe, and we mainly booked families on the summer holidays for Turkey. However, the sudden closure of travel corridors and the national media headlines curtailed any shortterm positivity. The subsequent winter lockdown gave us more disappointment and inconvenience of having to unravel travel plans once again. Q How have you kept your spirits up during this time? A We are a family run business for 50 years and because of this we have a strong financial platform. We are fully licensed and

“Our hope is all clients can travel safely and get some much-needed winter sun in beautiful destinations” bonded and have spent the last 16 months in touch with all our clients and refunding them very quickly, which has led to incredible feedback and the knowledge that when our clients are able to travel again, they are so excited to book their bucket list adventures. We have also seen lots of demand for holidays in 2022 and even 2023, which is being booked with full flexibility and confidence.

A Yes, this is proving to be very popular as this is permitted and clients wishing to get away are booking some beautiful areas of the UK that people wish to see that would not necessarily have been their first choice of a holiday destination, but exceeded their expectations. Q Are the UK cruises proving popular? A Yes, and I do believe that these are the best

In line with the re-opening of domestic travel and hospitality, these “Seacations” are departing from UK ports throughout the summer giving guests the well-earned R&R, plus the opportunity to experience the amazing scenery and delights of the British Isles from the comfort of your luxurious floating resort.

Q Have you noticed a real interest in UK staycations?

Q What safety precautions are being taken? A All adult passengers must be double

Q What are your hopes for the second part of 2021? A As we await the countries that will be added to the green list as it is expanded, our hope is all clients can travel safely and get some much-needed winter sun in beautiful destinations such as Maldives, UAE, Caribbean, and Canary Islands. We would be delighted to recommend our favourite resorts/hotels within these destinations. ometimes, going on holiday in the sun will work wonders on your hair. Seawater is particularly beneficial, says Christel BarronHough, who knows all there is to know about hair and colour. As threetimes winner of the British Hairdressing Awards British Colour Technician of the Year Award and TIGI Global Creative Technical Director, she's a serious force in the world of hair – and she's also a lovely person to spend time with. Her successful salon is all Scandi styling and minimal cool. I'm here to refresh my tired highlights and she has a whole menu for that, including her own Lux Lights method. This is perfect for someone looking for a low-maintenance solution, she says: “This technique forms a super bright, seamless finish with barelythere re-growth. It's like creating the blonde you were born with” – even if, like me, you weren't actually born with any blonde. Christel is quick and professional, showing me some ideas on her phone first and then applying colour and chatting. A wash, a treatment and a quick trim later and my hair is summer-ready, sunkissed and full of natural movement without the dreaded stripey streak effect. My highlights are subtle yet brightening, exactly as I hoped for. Excitingly, Stil is opening a new salon in Chelsea imminently, so Christel's expertise will soon be available more widely. PERFECT BROWS

Blink Brow Bar bbb-london.com

f you do one thing to improve your overall look before a holiday, make it a brow treatment. The subtle difference between a scraggy, unkempt brow and a carefully shaped one totally transforms your face, while looking natural. If done well, nobody will notice that you've had your brows done, just that your face looks somehow better. At Blink Brow Bar, a simple brow shape and tint is quick and effective. I opt for a cautious mid-brown shade to

avoid the funny heavy brow look, though some say it's best to put up with heavier brows for the first day or two for the sake of longevity. Threading is an impressive skill: with just a simple piece of cotton and some precise judgment, unwanted single hairs are eliminated quickly and (almost) painlessly. Describing exactly the shape you want can be tricky, but at Blink the staff know instinctively what you want and what will suit you. Natural arches or angular, conceptual brows? They know best. Once shaped and tinted, my brows keep their neat appearance for several weeks. Pre-holiday, it's a good idea to add a lash tint too, which leaves you mascara-free, yet always looking polished. If anything beauty-related can improve your mood in half an hour, it's a trip to Blink Brow Bar.

argaret Dabbs is the queen of feet. Known for her gamechanging medical pedicure and her wide range of foot treatments, she has opened a huge new clinic inside Westfield's John Lewis. Here she offers an extended menu of beauty treatments in addition to her famed feet treats, but we're here for our feet. The medical pedicure takes 45 minutes, of which the first few are spent closely inspecting your feet. Any imperfections, dry bits, sores or problems are quickly identified by a medically-trained podiatrist, because this is about more than just nail polish. Foot problems are very common and maintaining foot health is all-important. Uniquely, there is no foot soak at Margaret Dabbs, because her treatments work best on a dry foot. Dry skin is filed away, nails are clipped and shaped, and my feet feel renewed. This treatment is as popular with men as with women, and there's a range of home products that will maintain the results – I come away with a metal foot file and a collection of lotions. My feet have never felt – or looked – better.

HAPPY

DAYS Holidaying with teenagers can be challenging – but at Club Med’s Algarve outpost, there’s something for everyone By PENDLE HARTE

W

hat makes a good holiday? A straw poll in my family brings up the following: a beach; a pool; things to do; good food. Everyone seems to agree, but on closer interrogation it becomes clear that definitions of ‘things to do’ and ‘good food’ vary. Holidaying with teenagers is a risky prospect, because nobody wants to put up with sulking on their long-awaited holiday, yet teens are easily displeased. So what’s the solution? At Club Med, they have the solution. More than 60 years of holidaying history have left the French organisation with all the knowledge and experience to offer the magic formula. The idea is simple: everything is included, everyone is catered to, no pressure to join in. A Club Med Village is a utopian society in microcosm, with its leader, the Chef de Village, mingling amicably with guests, as staff – GOs, as they are known, for Gentils Organisateurs – share duties and socialise enthusiastically and universally.

100

No money changes hands and everything is bottomless, from the ice cream to the Aperol to the clean towels. Notice boards advertise such uncontroversial happenings as beach volleyball and tennis tournaments. Bougainvilla is permanently in bloom. It’s a highly functioning slice of escapism and clearly it’s universally appreciated, because everyone here is happy. Including us, of course. We are in the Algarve’s Da Balaia resort, where surroundings are beautiful, food and drink is good and plentiful, and space and comfort are seamless. At first, our daughters, age 12 and 15, have predictable reservations about joining in. They respond with calculated indifference to the invitation to join the kids’ group – but this attitude is short-lived: by day two they are congregating with other teens for the 11am trapeze lesson, where friendships are formed for the week. Yes, that’s trapeze, a Club Med tradition: a huge rig plays host to lessons for all levels, and the teachers double as circus performers in the evenings to entertain the entire village. The teen group roams the resort at their own pace all week, moving between the pool, the ping pong tables and the beach,

“The adultsonly Zen pool is a dreamy freshwater lake”

leaving us adults to our own similar if lazier roaming. Smaller children march from activity to activity in their more supervised groups, playing minigolf, experimenting with archery and spending time in their designated shady play area, located at a discreet distance from the hub of the resort. We all settle into a holiday routine prioritising mealtimes, because food at Da Balaia is beyond impressive. Daily banquets are vast and impressive. The beauty of having three meals a day that require no personal input or even any thought is a fundamental source of Club Med joy. There’s no time to feel hungry and no need to fill up because mealtimes come round fast. The trick, we learn, is to not to eat too much, and not to worry about missing out. There is always tomorrow. The spread looks as appealing as it tastes and options suit all tastes, so if we adults choose grilled sardines for lunch, the teens can have pizza. If we have octopus, they can have burgers. Highlights of the week’s menu include oysters, tuna carpaccio, grilled prawns, clam linguini and lots of fish, while daily staples span salad, a solid cheese course and lots of fruit. Dessert is occasion-style every day, while breakfast choices include everything you can think of, from pancakes to chia pots via a full fry up. For families, all of this means that adults can enjoy sardines and salad for lunch without children complaining, which is a holiday in itself.

Between meals, we fit in tennis lessons (no shame in being an adult beginner here – there’s a class for that) and blissful swims at the adults-only Zen pool, a dreamy freshwater lake complete with lilypads and sea views. Steps lead down to a beautiful beach with gentle Atlantic waves and perfect sand. There’s no shortage of beautiful views and places to lounge. For me, the definition of a holiday is a break from making decisions and planning. Not having to think about meals, or timetables, makes a blissful escape from the daily and weekly grind. And spending time together as a family is more successful when time is also spent apart. Older children do not want to be without their peers for the entire duration of your trip, and they are entirely capable of retreating to their rooms for wifi if bored, which no adult can bear. So give them some friends and some activities, and when they return for family mealtimes, the mood is likely to be harmonious. Especially when lunch is by the pool. Seven nights all-inclusive stay at Club Med Da Balaia from £1,840 per adult (based on double occupancy) with return flights from London (LTN) and transfers included. Price based on a departure date of 22nd August 2021 and children under six stay free. Book now at clubmed.co.uk or call 0845 367 6767

The founder of Hunt Property Services picks apart the latest market figures B y H AY L E Y H U N T

A

ccording to e-surv, the average price of a home in England and Wales stood at £343,658 last month – up 0.5% on the previous month and 13.4% on the year, the highest year-on-year growth since 2004. We know the market has been flying – but could this be ambitious reporting designed to capture a headline? How can such incredible growth be achieved during a pandemic? Rightmove concurs at £333,564, commenting that buyer demand has risen 52% since the beginning of the pandemic, but that stock availability has fallen to around 50% of what it was then for houses with three or more bedrooms, with a 24% decline in availability to two bedrooms or fewer in the same period. However, remember Rightmove’s figures are asking prices for newto-market properties. According to the Land Registry the average UK house price for sold property stands at £234,474. Clearly various sources calculate their figures differently. But the average price is not likely to be especially relevant for most people – the key here is the

rate of growth. And the Office for National Statistics puts that at 10.2% over the past year, with regional variations of course. Staggering. But what has caused this frenzy? We know that Brexit and the pandemic put the brakes on the market for at least a year and when the floodgates opened everyone wanted to buy, supported by the government’s SDLT (Stamp Duty) concession. Although this starts coming to a tapered end from the end of this month, there’s no sign of market activity abating. In fact, despite the fact that the SDLT concession has actually stimulated price rises even beyond the Stamp Duty saving, affordability, along with market confidence, is strong – interest rates remain exceptionally low, many households have made considerable savings due to lack of spending opportunities during the pandemic, and, most importantly, people have had time to reflect on their priorities and have discovered that a house move could well tick several boxes for them. For example, larger family homes are required to accommodate ageing parents as an alternative to an expensive care home. And young people are staying home longer too, again putting pressure on the

need for larger properties. Sadly, the rise in property values over the pandemic alone has required first time buyers to find about 9% more money towards their deposit (over £3,200 more on average). Makes you wonder if the government should meddle with market forces, doesn’t it! Location of course is as important as ever, but there is certainly less focus on proximity to the station as people get used to working from home, possibly permanently, as a lifestyle choice. With that lifestyle, as well as a desire for a garden or home-office space, come more community-based preferences, such as being close to artisan shops, entertainment centres and gastro-pubs. Of course, if you’re thinking of selling (and now would be a really, really, good time to do so) you can’t change the location of your property – but do speak to us about how to optimise its appeal for the current market. You might be pleasantly surprised – especially when we tell you what your property could be worth if marketed correctly. But don’t hang about – we don’t expect this strong sellers’ market to last forever! huntpropertyservices.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

his magnificent double fronted five bedroom, detached Victorian residence has been lovingly and sympathetically refurbished and extended by the current owners, restoring this period fine home including professionally landscaping the front and rear gardens. This prestigious property is one of the five original Manor Victorian Villas situated in the highly favoured ‘lower’ part of Piercing Hill, opposite and with views of Theydon Bois Golf Course. Occupying one of the widest plots and extending to approximately 0.5 acres – offering further scope for development if so required subject to the usual planning consents – the very deep frontage allows off street parking for many vehicles and incorporates a separate double garage

with storage above that further extends to provide an outside office to the rear. The carriage driveway with mature hedging provides excellent privacy. Principle accommodation is vast and arranged over two floors, extending to circa 4000 sq ft and comprising an elegant hallway beyond the stain glass timber entrance door, where you will find three reception rooms with oak flooring, plus a study all with wonderfully high ceilings, and a Victorian style Orangery perfect for the westerly facing aspect and detached office. To the left side of the house is a separate front entrance door to a Christian style handmade kitchen and utility room with granite worktops, capturing tranquil views of the gardens beyond. The master features an en-suite bath and dressing rooms, and there is a further en-suite to bedroom two and a main family bathroom. Blending the old with the new is clear throughout the property. Some of the notable features are the wood burner in the main reception room and feature cast iron fireplaces to many other rooms including bedrooms. To the rear is a very sunny westerly facing garden, of ample size yet easily maintainable. There is an expansive patio area ideal for entertaining with steps up to a large lawn that has old oak sleepers surrounding flower beds, together with a large shed/workshop. Epping Forest is a spectacular natural area to have on the doorstep. Stretching 12 miles from Manor Park, in east London, to just north of Epping in Essex, it is the largest public open space in the London area. At almost 6,000 acres, it is a popular area for recreation and enjoyment. It is a great place to walk or ride bicycles. It is also of national and international conservation importance, with two thirds of it being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest

and a Special Area of Conservation. Theydon Bois is arranged around its village green, which encompasses a duck pond and hosts various events during the year. There are also local shops that cater for daily needs and a selection of restaurants for dining out. Schooling in the area is excellent and includes several well regarded state and private schools. Theydon Bois also has a sporting atmosphere with its golf, tennis and cricket clubs, whilst the Tube station makes central London very accessible.
