or many, February is the bleakest month. We're several months into winter and it feels as if there's no respite in sight. All the dark mornings and afternoons, the relentless chill, the cruel grey skies. Any enthusiasm we felt for our winter wardrobes back in November has entirely evaporated. And to add insult to injury, it's Valentine's Day, a date that strikes fear into the heart of anyone single, even to those whose absence of coupledom feels fine on all the other 364 days of the year. Or should we make that 365? Because 2016 is a leap year, a confusing little quirk of time that makes the year feel a bit special. So let's cling onto that – and in this February issue we are celebrating all the best things the month has to offer, such as the new show by the fabulous Cirque

7 CHIS_FEB16_EDS_LETTER.indd 7

du Soleil and the exciting inaugural Chinese Lantern Festival at Chiswick House. We're giving Valentine's Day its due optimism with a page of gift ideas as well as a host of romantic fashion suggestions, while dreaming of elsewhere with an extended travel section, where we focus on Greece (glamorous Mykonos and beautiful Santorini) alongside ski-ing in Val d'Isere and holing up nearer to home at the ever-wonderful Calcot Manor in Gloucestershire. Here's to surviving February in style. ◆

ondon’s first Chinese Lantern Festival is set to transform the gardens at Chiswick House into a dazzling extravaganza of lights, culture, art and cuisine from 3 February until 6 March, captivating the whole family. The Magical Lantern Festival channels its rich, 2000-year heritage into an immersive world, celebrating Chinese New Year 2016 - the Year of the Monkey - with more than 50 giant, hand-sculpted lanterns discovered by guests exploring the picturesque garden trail through Corridors of Light. This festival is the brainchild of David Lee and Ian Xiang, who explain: “London was chosen as the first city to host this amazing, 29-day festival of light, due to its status as the multicultural centre of the Western World. And we selected an iconic venue for this iconic event, providing a unique, cultural experience and marking the 15th day of the Lunisolar year’s first month and the last day of the Lunar

The marriage between East and West and the capital’s first ever hosting of the world-famous event is also celebrated with life-sized London bus and phone box lanterns. Elsewhere, an animal kingdom will see life-sized flamingos, zebras, kangaroos and elephants nestled among the

trees - a festival tradition and a nod to the history of Chiswick House, whose eccentric former owner, the sixth Duke of Devonshire, kept such exotic beasts in its expansive gardens. The Enchanted Forest will surround an ethereal Tree of Life, illuminating the oversized mushrooms, plants and flowers exploding around it, while enormous lotus flowers open and close as they drift across the garden’s water features. To mark the Year of the Monkey, an illuminated waterfall will provide the fairytale setting for an intricate, lantern recreation of popular Chinese fable, The Monkey King. And as guests enjoy more than 75 minutes on their cultural adventure, they can sample a range of international cuisine, hot tipples and unique gifts to remember the experience. Don't miss it.◆

FOOD for Thought

Bompas & Parr have opened a British Museum of Food, in which there’s quite a bit to digest W o r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

T

he British Museum of Food sounds like something that already exists. On first hearing about it, I had to double check that it wasn’t in fact one of the innumerable institutions I had been dragged around on school trips as a child. And that is sort of the point. Why isn’t there a British Museum of Food? Sam Bompas and Harry Parr are the people asking this question, having set up a pop-up version of what they hope to turn into a permanent fixture next to Borough Market. The pair first achieved a degree of notoriety in the food world by creating ingenious and gravity defying jellies including luminous, neon confections and an entire jelly-scape capturing the London skyline in wobbly technicolour. They have since expanded their empire (not in jelly) with projects that range from sending coffee into space to filling a room full of a breathable cocktail cloud. Located next door to their other ongoing project (Alcoholic Architecture, the aforementioned cocktail cloud), the museum looks more like a smart

Southwark townhouse than your average museum. I am greeted at the entrance and ushered into the first room which is dominated by a large screen and two slightly sinister-looking chairs. This section of the exhibition is called

Be the Bolus: The Peristaltic Experience and its blurb begins: ‘Ever wondered what happens to the food you chew?’ As I slip off my shoes, slide my feet and arms into the plush leather recesses of the chair, I’m about to find out. What follows is a video and a sensation that needs to be experienced to be believed; suffice it to say that by the end I had a newfound appreciation for what my food goes through. Next up is Choco-Phonica, which is all about how sounds affect the way we taste. Visitors become part of the experiment as they record the relative bitterness and sweetness of the chocolate in each booth before submitting their answers. Munching away and feeling like a bona fide scientist, I walk up the stairs through the Atelier of Flavour, a gallery of art and photography centred around the theme of food and the tradition of the Full English Breakfast. The pièce de résistance, however, is at the top. For The Butterfly Effect, Bompas & Parr have actually set up a fully functioning hot-house filled with butterflies. But what has this to do with food? Heralded as the ‘unsung heroes of pollination’, the UK Government has recently placed a

ARTS & CULTURE / SPOTLIGHT WE’RE JUST ABOUT to start YOGA WITH THE butterflies which will BE A unique EXPERIENCE particular emphasis on the importance of these beautiful winged creatures in global food security; the Butterfly Effect serves to draw attention to this. As I walk through the humid, rosehued room, butterflies flit through the air and perch on leaves. Particularly fascinating is the box filled with hanging chrysalises, some yielding butterflies as I watch. The tour ends with The British Menu Archive, an exhibit that gives a glimpse into the food served not only throughout the ages but in myriad different places. Entertaining and informative, I can only hope that this brilliant enterprise becomes a permanent addition to London’s cultural landscape. ◆

Five minutes with

SAM BOMPAS o f B o m p a s & Pa r r

CATHERINE HALES: What initially inspired to you to open the British Museum of Food? SAM BOMPAS: It’s something that has been percolating in the studio’s consciousness for quite a long time now. I think food has become such a central part of the way people present themselves and the way they define their identity – it almost seems absurd that the British Museum of Food hasn’t existed before. After all, how many people spend their waking hours at work thinking about what they’re going to cook when they get home? What restaurants and bars they’re going to go to? It was just a matter of time and honestly it’s been a race against time; if we didn’t do it, someone else would. CH: If it were a permanent feature, where would your ideal location be? SB: I would say Southwark – I was born there and it’s where I’ve always lived. Having it in Borough Market is absolutely ideal, as the market itself is over 1,000 years old. It has a real resonance there.

The British Menu Archive

CH: The butterfly house is amazing. What was involved in setting that up? SB: I guess the first thing is the intention: how do you make rather abstract but very important subjects interesting to people? I think the best way is something intriguing and entertaining that makes them curious. We wanted to make the important, not very sexy, subject of global food security a bit more accessible and relevant to people. Our way into doing that was butterflies. CH: What has the response been like since you’ve been there? SB: Well, people absolutely love it.

19 GREE_Dec15_BRITISH MUSEUM OF FOOD.indd 19

We’re just about to start yoga with the butterflies which will be a unique experience – thinking about global food security as you’re stretching. Yes, it’s been utterly delightful. I have friends with kids who are still talking about it after visiting. CH: Did they love the chairs that chew and digest you as you sit? SB: Yes; it’s fun, it’s playful but it’s also educational. The way that we approach eveything at Bompas and Parr is: serious research goes into a project but then, ultimately, it’s very easy to enjoy it for what it is. Then, hopefully, you’re intrigued and inspired to learn more. CH: You’re known for pushing the boundaries of food and drink; what has been your most ambitious project? SB: Oh, gosh – whatever’s most recent! Anything from flooding Selfridges with 60 tonnes of liquid (which was definitely enough to make the building collapse if we hadn’t done the right engineering calculations), to cooking with lava, to making a chocolate climbing wall that Peter Andre used to conquer his fear of heights. CH: What have you got planned next? SB: All the programming for the British Museum of Food and for Alcoholic Architecture. Unlike most of our projects, it is a long-term thing so we can have lots of events that happen there, as well. For instance, we’re just about to launch our New Year’s Eve plans for Alcoholic Architecture which will involve a medieval foam party. We’ve got a wet room in there so we can use mandrake-infused foam. It will be outrageous, hallucinogenic and we can party like it’s 1399. ◆

or the first time in Cirque du Soleil’s history, Amaluna features a cast that comprises a majority of women, with a 100% female band. “Amaluna is a tribute to the work and voice of women”, explains Director of Creation Fernand Rainville. “The show is a reflection on balance from a women’s perspective”, he adds. Director Diane Paulus, winner of a 2013 Tony Award (Pippin) and recently listed as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2014, says: “I didn’t want to build a ‘women’s agenda’ show. I wanted to create a show with women at the center of it, something that had a hidden story that featured women as the heroines.” Paulus drew from a series of classical influences when creating the concept of the show; including tales from Greek and Norse mythology, Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Never before seen in the UK, Amaluna opens at the Royal Albert Hall on

16 January and will take the audience on a magical journey, loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Awe-inspiring performances and Cirque du Soleil’s mind-bowing acts make up this brand new production that is sure to wow fans. Among Amaluna’s highly talented cast, three performers and its artistic director hail from around the UK. Marissa King performs on the uneven bars, Rachael Wood is the guitarist in the all-female band, David Rimmer is an acrobat in the teeterboard act and the artistic director is former dancer Rachel Lancaster. Written and directed by Tony awardwinning director, Diane Paulus, Cirque du Soleil’s 33rd production is a celebration of love and a tribute to the work and voice of women. This is reflected in the show as female performers make up the majority of the cast, with all eight members of the band also women. The show will join some of Cirque du Soleil’s most loved productions that have also been staged at the world-famous building such as

Some 30 years ago, Cirque du Soleil was the dream of a small community of travelling performers who would do anything to share their love of the stage, of circus and of the world. or the woman who wears lingerie for herself, not just to impress someone else, Fleur du Mal is the breakout luxury label fast becoming a staple in many a chest of drawers. It is a brand tailored to women who are empowered by their femininity, not defined by it, and features delicate designs that are tastefully sexy and elegantly cheeky. Meaning? Fleur du Mal is the ultimate gift. But is it any wonder, with Kiki de Montparnasse’s co-founder, Jennifer Zuccarini, behind the irresistible label. Since 2012 she’s been harnessing her years of experience helming one of the world’s most respected lingerie brands, and restoring the art of undressing one knicker at a time. Fleur du Mal’s latest line is a collaboration with Playboy and celebrates the adult entertainment brand’s hey-day when esteemed photographers Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts were contributors. This playful collection – illuminated in a members-only club themed campaign fronted by Scout Willis, Brandee Brown, Noot Seear and Chelsea Leyland – comprises vintage Playboy inspired looks that have been revamped for the 21st century mademoiselle. Whether Swarovski crystal bunny ears, tulle bunny tails or bow tie collar bodysuits take your fancy, Fleur du Mal is your little secret – and your secret weapon for Valentine’s Day. ◆ ● FLEUR DU MAL From £45; fleurdumal.com

CALLENS

With travel and sport being a large part of my life, it’s often a complicated process to pack just what I need without it resulting in an over-sized case. And then there’s the issue of what to wear while in transit. Callens holds the answer for those who travel often, with their mission statement to ‘travel beautifully and arrive perfect’. The concept behind this understated label is for the clothing to feel like a second skin. ◆ l callens-clo.com

LOMAX AT HOME

I have been teaching spin classes at Lomax's sleek studio for years and often attend the intense blast classes, but training in the comfort of my home had not been a consideration until the gym launched Lomax At Home. But now a highly qualified PT arrives at my house, fitting in with my schedule and providing an intense one-on-one hour of training suited exactly to my body’s needs. Best of all, I don’t need to consider how I look or whether I am wearing my best sports clothing. This is a true life saver for those who intend to work out, but never quite find the time to get to a gym. ◆ l lomaxpt.com

It always helps to understand a new business by meeting the founder, hearing first hand the intentions of the company and what services they have to offer that I can’t find elsewhere. local sports enthusiasts led to me book a deep tissue massage to see for myself if my tense muscles could be eased; teaching several intense spin classes a week means my shoulders are more knotted than the average gym-goer. Warm and inviting, the spacious rooms and soothing music had allowed me to relax by the time my therapist started the hour-long massage. Obviously highly experienced, the masseuse stretched and pushed me in exactly the right spots and left me feeling as though there had been a significant change in my body’s tension by the time I left. ◆ l himalayanspa.co.uk

s someone who’s gone darker, lighter and everywhere in between, dying my hair sure has taken its toll over the years leaving it looking dry, dull and damaged. I’m forever on the lookout for products to give a boost or ‘oomph’ to my hair, hoping that they could somehow restore the shine I used to have, but nothing’s ever done the trick. When I heard that Olaplex, the new hair treatment that has taken the US by storm, had arrived in the UK, I knew I had to try it out. Hailed as a ‘game-changer’ and a favourite of Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow, I had to see if this this product was worth the hype. I was greeted by the lovely Layla at Hair Associates, a strong Olaplex advocate who has faced similar hair dilemmas as I have. She assured me of the changes the treatment had made to her hair and her clients’, and promised me that I’d be blessed with bornagain locks post-treatment. The process began by applying the Stage One ‘Bond Multiplier’ and letting it sit for five minutes. Next, Stage Two ‘Bond Perfector’ was applied and left for 10-15 minutes. Soon, the product was ready to be washed out, where I already noticed a change in my hair when it was wet: it felt smooth, far less tangled than it usually is after I wash it, practically slipping through my fingers it was so soft. Layla then began blow-drying, and that’s when I saw the full effects of the treatment: fresh, beautiful hair that was easy to style and exuding shine! Amazed that I didn’t need serum or a finishing product, I left the salon with silky strands and I knew I’d found my holy-grail hair treatment.

THE ‘KEY’ TO SUCCESS

THE KEYS TO

WELLNESS Are you ready to eat well and take regular exercise or do you need a little extra help? by Terry Rodham HOGARTH GROUP WELLNESS MANAGER

T

he mantra of eating well and taking regular exercise sounds so easy, but even with the best of intentions, it’s still hard to keep to this simple mantra, isn’t it? In our modern world we are constantly juggling work, social lives, finances, family and relationships, often resulting in a regular exercise regime and a healthy diet proving a step too far. We recognise these challenges at our clubs and provide members with expert guidance and regular one -to-one contact, combined with the latest in fitness technology, to make

the process of maintaining and improving personal well-being easier to manage, understand, and achieve.

BALANCE IS THE KEY

u At The Park Club, we have adopted the concept of Wellness, defined as ‘a balance of mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of wellbeing.’ The key to that statement is balance. Not only do we consider it our job to guide you inside the gym, we also undertake to guide you outside the gym to help you achieve this balance because, after all, there is more to life than eating chicken salad and pounding the treadmill.

55 CHIS_Dec15_Park_Club_adv.indd 55

u Using the latest in gym technology, members can carry their workout information with them on a special Wellness Key, which can be inserted into any machine, providing the user with information such as the correct weight to use, the number of repetitions, or the resistance level and time on an exercise bike. Not only does this give the user confidence, it also stores all your exercise results, such as calories burned, weight lifted or distance covered, so that a review can be conducted by a trainer and goals/targets adjusted accordingly.

REGULAR CONTACT

u Regular contact between members and trainers is a major focus. Members are entitled to one complimentary personal training session every month in which progress can be discussed, technique and form checked and goals reassessed. This regular contact keeps members engaged in their routine and confident to continue. Using our ‘Coach’ application, trainers are also able to stay in regular contact with members wherever they may be. If you’ve had a period of inactivity on your account, you can expect an email checking that everything is okay!

STAYING CONNECTED

u You can use your smart phone to access your Wellness account wherever you are. You can use your laptop or tablet to register physical activity such as a game of tennis or a cycle around the park from anywhere. And of course, if all this technology is too much, simple face-to-face time is always available from our welcoming and knowledgeable staff. We love to see members enjoying their routine and reaping the benefits of regular exercise, wherever it may be. u

BANDOL

Excellent French food comes to Chelsea Wo r d s C at h e r i n e h a l e s

o strangers to French fine dining in Chelsea, husband and wife team Vittorio Monge and Sylvia Kontek have added Bandol to their growing portfolio which also includes Margaux on Brompton Road. On entering, my first thoughts are, ‘Is that a real olive tree growing in the middle of the restaurant?’ The answer is yes, along with a living wall of ivy and creeping vines, obviously designed to transport diners from a chilly night in West London to a temperate evening in the south of France. The starters are small, tapas-style sharing dishes so we feel fully justified in ordering three between us. Octopus carpaccio is delicate and crammed with flavour brought out by tangy lemon and chilli, while burrata dop heirloom tomato salad is wonderfully creamy and completed by the ripe, robust tomatoes. Sardines provencal are oily and pungent, with a fantastic fresh kick enhanced by the salty capers. For mains there’s rack of lamb for me and duck leg confit for my friend with some green beans to share. The lamb is pink perfection, served in its own juices and very tender. The duck is accompanied by figs and braised lentils, which add to its richness but it is the beans that somehow steal the show; cooked with just the right amount of crunch and smothered in oil and salt, they are immensely satisfying. Without a doubt, Bandol serves up some of the best southern French cuisine to be had in London. ◆

N

PEPPE RESTAURANT Authentic Italian cuisine in the heart of Kingston W o r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

L

ocated within The Cardinal Kingston, Peppe’s decor is reminiscent of a Tuscan villa. This should come as no surprise, as the restaurant itself has become well known for serving up truly authentic Italian and Sicilian fare. The menu is extensive and offers several meat and fish options as well as pizza, pasta and risotto. Unable to whittle down the list to just two starters, we choose three: the Formaggio di Capra Fritto (deep fried goat’s cheese) is wonderfully creamy with a satisfyingly crispy crumbed exterior and the chilli jam that comes with it provides a little kick. The Funghi e Spinaci Gratinati is rich and piquant, the sweetness of the béchamel tomato sauce combining well with the earthy mushroom flavours and topped off with creamy, melted mozzarella. Our third starter, however is the clear favourite – Melanzane alla Parmigiana consists of pan fried layers of aubergines with mozzarella and parmesan oven baked in a fresh tomato and basil

sauce and is devilishly indulgent. Our plates are emptied in record time and we eagerly await our mains. I decide to opt for a pasta dish, with prawns and a tomato and basil sauce. The fusilli-like spirals are cooked to al dente perfection and the sauce is tangy and flavoursome while the prawns really round out the dish, adding a deliciously salty note. My companion goes down a different route with her pan-fried veal with wild mushrooms but is not disappointed. The meat is tender and subtly accented by the unmistakeable truffle flavours in the creamy sauce while the sautéed potatoes are light and crisp. Somehow we manage pudding in the form of cannoli, a Sicilian speciality, which rounds off our stellar Italian feast with just the right amount of sweetness. Lively atmosphere, welcoming servers and, most importantly, fantastic Italian food, Peppe is a must-visit. ◆

Cool Thing Party like a rock star on and off the slopes in Val d’Isère at the spectacular Chalet Marco Polo Wo r d s g e m m a b i l l i n g t o n

B

etween the thrill of the slopes and the hedonism of après-ski, sometimes the only chance to enjoy a moment’s peace in Val d’Isère is on the ski lifts. Sitting on the rickety, slow-moving chairlift, you suddenly have time to truly take in your surroundings. There’s the powder-soft snow below your ski-clad feet, and the dramatic mountain peaks that glisten in the sunlight, stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s an otherworldly beauty that – try as you might with cold, gloveless fingers – can never be captured on camera. There is no Instagram filter that could do these views justice. Val d’Isère and the neighbouring town of Tignes form the expansive ski resort Espace Killy, named in honour of local sporting hero, Jean-Claude Killy. The region covers some 300km of pistes with over 44km of cross country action and 137 runs. Val d’Isère attracts a loyal clientele who return season after season, often comprised of the well-heeled younger generation who arrive en masse in neon thermals to let their hair down at the legendary après-ski hangouts. This includes the world-famous La Folie Douce, an icon of alpine debauchery since 1980. Today Val d’Isère is regarded as one of the world’s finest ski resorts, but it wasn’t

until the early 90s in the run-up to the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, when it hosted the men’s downhill skiing event, that it was really put on the map. It is in the heart of this picture-postcard town, hidden among a cluster of large but fairly innocuous-looking chalets, that you will find Val d’Isère’s most exclusive address. Chalet Marco Polo is the Rolls Royce of ski accommodation, offering the kind of rock star lifestyle that one can only imagine takes place on Jay Z’s mega yacht. Named the ‘Best Ski Chalet in France’ by the World Ski Awards for the past two years running, Chalet Marco Polo is part of an impressive portfolio of superdeluxe chalets owned and operated by Consensio, all of whose properties are hand-picked and fully catered, offering the ultimate in five-star luxury. Spread across four floors and covering some 1000m sq ft of space, Chalet Marco Polo comfortably accommodates up to 14 people. The six bedrooms are all ensuite, unique in style and equipped with Christian Lacroix toiletries. However, it’s at the main entrance that you’re greeted with the chalet’s jewel in the crown. Inside the large wooden main door is a luxurious swimming pool and hot tub area decorated like a Buddhist temple. The walls are clad in 24-carat gold mosaic, the pool lit an ethereal green

with an impressive, albeit unnecessary, drop-down projector screen. The intricate wooden ceiling above the pool was drafted in from a 150-year-old Moroccan souk. Wellness extends to the lower levels, where you’ll find a stateof-the-art gym with two of everything so that couples can workout together. Next door there’s a treatment room, a hammam and two hydro massage beds to soothe aching, post-ski legs. That is, of course, if you can pry yourself away from the chalet to hit the slopes in the first place. Skiing almost feels like a superfluous activity when faced with the dizzying amount on offer at the chalet, and it soon

68 07/01/2016 10:00

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

becomes difficult to leave its sheepskin throw warmth and Cire Trudon-infused radiance. Not least because guests are waited on hand and foot by a team of friendly and efficient staff, including an excellent in-house chef and beauty therapist. No request is too much; my hand is rarely without a glass of freshly poured Perrier Jouët. The team expertly strikes the balance of being genuinely cordial without becoming sycophantic, professional yet never aloof. They’ll recommend the best restaurants and clubs, drive you practically to the foot of the ski lift lest your legs do any unnecessary additional exercise, and even fill your bathtub with snow so that you

can snap an outlandish bikini-clad selfie (not me, but this did happen). Aside from the first-rate service and unlimited amenities (which also include a games room with pool table and arcade machines, and a fantastic wine tasting room), what makes Chalet Marco Polo stand out is its spectacular decor. A melange of exotic and contemporary styles on the backdrop of a classic alpine chalet, the interior might seem haphazard on paper – think colourful, exotic furniture, Pop Art style paintings and sculpture-like glass chandeliers – yet everything works in complete harmony. The effect is elegant and extraordinary, and every detail,

69 CHIS_FEB16_Valdisere_DPS.indd 69

right down to the last doorknob, has been hand-selected by the chalet’s owner, Jean Bernard Montel. This polite French businessman has rather exceptional taste; book your holiday here and you’ll be admired for yours, too. But be warned: adjusting to normal life back home will be no mean feat. ◆ ¢ Consensio Chalets offers a week’s stay at Chalet Marco Polo from £2,491 per person based on 10/12 people sharing six rooms. This rate includes breakfast, afternoon tea, pre-dinner champagne, dinner and a chauffeur-driven car. 0203 393 0833; consensiochalets.com

I can see that the steep steps and predominantly stone walkways that lead you through the streets of this beautiful place can be a little tricky at times, but to not have the option of booking into so many of the leading hotels was somewhat frustrating. Then we discovered Sophia Suites. Sophia Suites is a relatively new resort with under 10 suites, so you never feel as though you are not getting the full attention of the charming and accommodating staff and the staff here are one of the main reasons I would recommend staying at this incredible place. Attentive and friendly, without being over-familiar, it feels as though you are being welcomed into a true Greek family. Nothing is

too much trouble and the relaxed, although professional, atmosphere encourages you to slip further into holiday mode, enjoy the breathtaking sea views from each of the suites and certainly forget about work and daily city life back home.

We stayed in a Senior Suite, which was far larger than expected, had a sleek interior and access to an outdoor plunge pool. The hotel doesn’t have a swimming pool, but with the clear-water beaches a short drive away, we were glad of the excuse to head out and see more of the island each day. The resort, like so many on the island, has been built into the caves, so be prepared to be enveloped in white stone for your duration; we loved the uniqueness of staying in these cave-like rooms, but it never felt claustrophobic due to the large windows and clever lighting. ◆

here isn’t a restaurant as such, but there is a calm, serene communal dining space with a view over the Aegean sea that we chose to frequent for most of our stay, both for breakfast and dinner. With a large dining table and warm summer evenings, time passed quickly and we received course after course of local delicacies prepared by a young, inventive chef that has moved from a leading restaurant in Athens to work exclusively with Sophie Suites. There is also the option of in-room dining, but prepare yourselves, the chef here is passionate and expect to receive more divine offerings than you could possibly manage in one evening. ◆

f the proof isn’t in the 17.9 per cent increase in tourism to the island in 2015, then it certainly is in the number of recent celebrity visitors. The Kardashian clan shipped over for a break back in the summer of 2015, while John Legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lindsay Lohan and Katy Perry (to mention a few) all paid visits in the same year. French Vogue also paid homage to the tiny island with an enormous Mario Testino-meets-Mykonos fashion shoot in its November issue. An island of contrasts - who’d have thought that a 33 square meter spit of rock with a Martian landscape would appeal to the world’s most discerning glamazons? - Mykonos is a sun-drenched, relatively under-developed holiday bolthole, and there’s never been a better time to visit.

My group of seven 20-something single friends were looking for a break at the end of a long, drizzly British summer and Mykonos seemed like the obvious choice. September, after all, is a great time to visit the island. By this point the bulk of the

THIS SPIT of rock APPEALS to the WORLD'S MOST discerning GLAMAZONS party hoards have shipped out, meaning that the beach bars have freed up a little space, the sun has decreased in intensity a bit and prices - naturally - are lower. Spurred on by the promise of glamorous (not to mention uncrowded)

parties, Cuprinol-coloured suntans and cheaper drinks than you’ll ever find in Ibiza, we hopped on a three-and-a-halfhour Easyjet flight (booked last minute for £200) and set a course for Rocky Retreat II, an enormous iceberg of a villa overlooking Agrari Beach, on the island’s south side. One thing to note about Mykonos is that it’s imperative you hire a car. Our villa, mercifully, came complete with a fantastic concierge called Viktor who was more than willing to pick up our shopping for us and to organise taxis for our evening jaunt - but for day-to-day bombing around the island, a car of your own is essential. The roads in Mykonos, you see, are as windy, narrow and unmade as they come. Loose rocks litter them, potholes dot them and goats frequently trot across them. Rocky Retreats, for instance,

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST be met with a queue, but the wait is worth it- the generous owners will provide free local rose wine and mineral water for your pains, and the views are incredible. After lunch, head down the narrow path next to the restaurant and visit the tiny beach to the left of Agios Sostis’ main drag. We went for a swim at sundown and witnessed a more beautiful sunset. It might have been the wine, but watching the giant moon rising into the dusty pink sky above the lilac millpond of the Agean was a pretty extraordinary experience. If you’re looking for something a little less rustic, head out to Nammos on

though only around three kilometers asthe-crow-flies from Mykonos airport, took at least 20 minutes to get to by car – and that was only because we managed to avoid the goats. But never has a tricky journey resulted in more glorious bounty. Perched on the edge of a rocky outcrop overlooking the azure-cum-cobalt sea, the villa is a glittering oasis in the prehistoric landscape. Complete with three double bedrooms in the main house, and an additional two double beds situated in the ample poolhouse beneath, the wide open spaces and thick igloo-esque walls were to be our home for the next week, and we couldn’t have been happier. Furnished with a perfect kidney-shaped infinity pool which bleeds its blues into the sky and sea beyond; an enormous dining terrace and bbq, and an expansive fridge (perfect for filling with ouzo and strong Greek beer) - in addition to a brilliantly thorough maid who visits daily - Rocky Retreats II was to be our partycum-relaxation bolthole in the sun. The Rocky portfolio's original property

is the Rocky Mansion, which has a more family-centered appeal. The pool, for instance, is bigger and squarer, meaning you can actually use it for laps as you look out over the Agean; the bbq terrace is set further away from the main house (which boasts a master bedroom on the first floor, a smaller double bedroom on the ground floor and a room with two sets of bunkbeds next door), while the pool house below plays host to a grotto of extra rooms including two doubles and one twin, ideal for extra guests. And there's lots to do. For impeccable octopus in vinegar and unmatched local seafood, head to Kiki’s Tavern. Perched just above Agios Sostis beach on the east side of the island, expect to

Offering perfect sushi and seafood for a fraction of the price you’d pay in that other famous beach restaurant, Ibiza’s Blue Marlin, the crowd is fun (and very Greek), the views spectacular, and the drinks, potent. Pillow Talk Rifat Ozbek talks about leaving couture for cushions Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

A

dmittedly, many people might not want to pay £900 for a cushion. But Yastik, Rifat Ozbek’s Kensington shop dedicated to cushions, is no ordinary soft furnishings store. This white-walled space is a gallery; its cushions the work. The art cushion, in its very limited edition lines, is a highly collectible piece, a world away from the throwaway gift store version. Turkish-born Ozbek hasn’t been making cushions all his life, of course. For 20 years he was at the top of his tree in the fashion world, forming part of the 1980s aesthetic created by a new generation of designers including Betty Jackson, John Galliano and Katherine Hamnett. Crowned British Designer of the year twice – in 1988 and 1992 – he fell out of love with fashion when he ‘felt he’d given as much as [he] could’ (and industry demands kept increasing) so he left couture and moved into cushions in a move that quickly revealed itself to be a very canny one.

NH_JAN16_OZBEK.indd 84

IN FASHION, I ensured THAT THE LINING OF a coat was as IMPORTANT AS THE OUTSIDE and it’s the same with THE BACK of a CUSHION

Because cushions, according to Ozbek, are largely overlooked. Probably because most of them are nasty. ‘My and my partner were looking for cushions when we were decorating our house in Bodrum and we couldn’t find any. There were horrible ones everywhere, filled with polystyrene and with lots of sequins and feathers. But I wanted something that you could put your head on without ending up with scratch marks or bleeding. Something simple that had quality to it.’ So they started making some, filling them with feather, down and a touch of lavender, covering them with beautiful patterned fabrics from Uzbekhistan and paying the attention to detail that he would with his couture lines. ‘The back of the cushion is as important as the front. When I was designing fashion I ensured that the lining of a coat was as important as the outside and it’s the same now. We make sure that you can turn them around and actually use the back of the cushion too.’ The idea originally to do something small and seasonless, an antidote to the relentless new collections required by the fashion industry and the pressure that

HOMES & INTERIORS / PROFILE Yastik in Kensington

Ozbek came under to produce handbags, shoes and accessories for his label when all he really wanted to do was dresses. But Yastik – named for the Turkish ‘pillow’ – didn’t stay small or seasonless for long. There are now three shops and about 50 outlets around the world, and they produce two collections a year. Designs have become more complex since copies started appearing on markets in Turkey, with intricately stitched patchwork and one-off fabrics. ‘We block fabrics coming in from Uzbhekistan so people can’t copy them.’ Still, it’s not as easy as originally thought. ‘We spend a lot of time matching and contrasting fabrics, and we make about 800 every season,

YOU’LL NEVER go

to someone else’s house & SEE YOUR CUSHION THERE

with no more than 16 of each style.’ There are no online sales because they simply couldn’t cope with the orders. ‘You’ll never go to someone else’s house and see your cushion there.’ The top-end ones, the £900 lines, are usually unique or a matching pair. ‘People like one-offs,’ says Ozbek.

There’s a theatrical element to the Ozbek’s process and his inspiration is varied – the next collection is inspired by neo-nomads and has a Berber feel. His other current project is the interior design for Robin Birley’s club at 5 Hertford Street, currently in progress – the basement club, Loulou’s, was designed by him a couple of years ago. Birley’s wife Lucy is a long-term friend and client of Ozbek’s. ‘He walked into my flat and immediately asked me to decorate his nightclub. I’m one of those designers who needs a theme – say native American, or Mexican, or Arabian. All my fashion collections used to have one.’ So at Loulou’s, the dancefloor is inspired by a Tibetan temple, the bar by African Art Deco and there’s a room dedicated to Russian set designer Leon Bakst. Minimalism is definitely not Ozbek’s thing. He’s all about bold print and striking combinations. Still, cushions aren’t the final destination for him – they’re likely to become a gateway to interiors. ‘Maybe I’ll start another brand,’ he says breezily. ‘I’ve never been scared. I don’t get stuck and I never feel like I have to do something if I don’t like it.’ So watch this space. ◆ Yastik, 8 Holland Street, W8 yastikbyrifatozbek.com

Numbers Game Singapore maths has had amazing results in the Far East, and now it’s working its magic here Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

P

icture two different maths lessons: one in the UK, one in Singapore. One is noisy, full of children working in small groups, folding paper and playing. The other is quiet, regimented, a teacher standing at the front of the classroom and children chanting times tables. The noisy class is in England and the regimented class is Singapore, right? Wrong, actually. It was Singapore that introduced innovative maths teaching methods a few decades ago while the UK was still staring at the blackboard. But with Singapore coming second for maths in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s most recent Progamme for International Student Assessment tests and the UK a paltry 26th, we have taken note and Singapore maths is now all the rage among our primary and secondary schools. Last summer brought the first proof that these methods are working. The report – which looked at the impact of the Singapore method of teaching on five- and six-year-olds in 90 primary schools and 11 and 12-year-olds in 50 secondary schools – was carried out by UCL Institute of Education and Cambridge University and showed that children taught the Singaporean ‘maths mastery’ approach learn faster than their classmates and make, on average, an extra month's worth of progress in a calendar year. So what exactly is Singapore maths? It is a radically different approach from traditional UK teaching methods. Pupils are taught to master fewer mathematical concepts but in greater detail and they learn these concepts through a three-step learning process. In the first step, students will engage in hands-on learning experiences using objects such as dice or paperclips. This is followed by

WE DON'T get our CHILDREN TO memorise TIMES TABLES drawing representations of mathematical concepts. Only then are students asked to solve mathematical problems in an abstract way by using numbers. Ling Yuan, head of maths at a school in Singapore, explains that there is a strong emphasis in Singapore maths “on gaining a good understanding of the basics before moving on. This provides a strong foundation,” she says. “Key to the programme is the insistence that children learn by sequence, first by manipulating objects in the real world, then by drawing pictorial representations before using the mathematical symbols. “The concrete, pictorial, abstract method is very powerful because it helps children to visualise number and proportion.” she says. “The children form a mental picture and a deeper

95 CHIS_FEB16_Education.indd 95

understanding using beans or pieces of pasta – then they might draw a box with green beans in it and for every 10 green beans you get a red one.” The simple task of folding paper can help children visualise division, she said, adding: “We don’t get our children to memorise times tables. We are not into rote learning.” The Department for Education introduced Singapore-style textbooks to 72 schools in England in January last year. And it’s funding the Maths Hubs programme, a network of 35 hubs created in the summer of 2014. The aims of the hubs is to bring together maths education professionals in a collaborative network to develop and spread best practice in teaching methods around the country. Hub schools have access to textbooks, receive extra teacher training and development and take part in exchanges with teachers from Shanghai. Each hub is led locally by an outstanding school or college. London Central and West, for example, is led by Fox Primary School in Notting Hill. Singapore maths is also revolutionising independent school teaching. Bernie Westacott, head of maths at Merchant Taylor’s Prep schools, says that after just a year of Singapore Maths, pupils are a year ahead. “Pupils focus intensely on a handful of ‘real maths’ topics, whereas in the UK the maths curriculum is a mile wide and an inch deep, making it difficult for students to master the most important skills. Rather than teaching pupils to memorise facts and routines, the focus is on maths concepts which are born out of practical experience.” “I have been teaching since 1973 and have never been happy with UK textbooks nor the way we have taught maths,” he says. “A few years ago I came across Singapore maths which seemed a perfect fit.” ◆

M

y move to London started out in Tooting Broadway, but I soon realised that getting back to my roots in the West Country for the weekend was a problem. I needed to live West of the bottleneck at Hammersmith to access the M4, or add two hours to my journey time. Chiswick seemed to fit the brief and 28 years ago I made what I thought would be a temporary move to the area. Chiswick was a very different place then with what seemed like an older population, very few restaurants, run down properties and half a dozen estate agents. Having originally had desires to train as an architect, the prospect of another seven years studying soon put pay to this career path. Instead my employment in estate agency started when I joined Tyser Greenwood. This great company which included one of the original nieces Miss Greenwood (aged 84), was swallowed by Abbey National at a time when banks

I LEARNT FROM AN EARLY STAGE THAT ESTATE AGENCY WAS VERY MUCH A PEOPLES BUSINESS

and building societies saw estate agency as a profitable addition to their other activities. I soon realised that a corporate culture of the bureaucracy, rafts of management, statistics, form filling and meetings left little time to actually sell properties. Fortunately, the opportunity to buy Whitman & Co came up, a well established agency which had been in Chiswick since the 1920s. I learnt from an early stage that estate agency was very much a peoples business and to this end at Whitman & Co we have the upper hand on our competitors. Everyone in the office lives locally, the brand is well respected, and our networking unrivalled. Probably the biggest change I’ve seen since I started working

in Chiswick, when 80% + of sales were to local people moving within the area, has been the decrease to around 50% of local sales. Now 30% of buyers come from Central London. The gentrification of the shopping and restaurant facilities in and around Chiswick High Road has been a significant contributing factor and this in turn has seen property prices push up at a remarkable rate. Based in Turnham Green Terrace with our double fronted office, we are in the main Chiswick through fare and with the sales, lettings and commercial departments run under one roof there is a great synergy between the departments. Being a successful local business, we are proud to support both local events and numerous charities. This year we have been delighted to support the local cricket club, bowling club, Chiswick Choir and Symphonia, school fetes, Shooting Star Chase Charity and our latest sponsorship to CRY Cardiac Risk in the Young. Anyone with children should have a look at their site and help them achieve their ambitious objectives. â—†

have always had a passion for property. I started my career on site, working with a building firm whilst studying carpentry. I have worked as an agent for 15 years and in West London for the last six years. I launched the KFH office in Brook Green in 2013 and we are set for another record year having quickly carved out a significant market share in the local area. Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the neighbouring areas of Shepherd’s Bush, Olympia and Hammersmith, Brook Green is an affluent and leafy oasis with a strong community spirit. I enjoy running along the Thames Path with friends, playing squash and going to the gym. I’m most relaxed whilst wiling away Sunday afternoons exploring Richmond or Bushy Park with my children. ◆

Do you long for a London village life?

£1.15 Million

I

t is often said that London is not a city, but a collection of villages in which we live, sleep and eat but rarely venture out of except to work and be entertained. There are over 50 of them ranging from a few streets (such as Barnes village) to much larger areas (like Hampstead village). And while size is easy to measure, provenance is harder to tie down. Many of London’s villages have been created both in antiquity and more recently by those hoping to make money from the ‘village’ moniker. “Villages are often created by the freehold owners of the buildings in the area with a view to raise the area’s profile because they have always been very popular with potential buyers,” says agent Christopher Sellwood, Central

North Director of Foxtons. “A sense of community and residential atmosphere, typical for a smaller town or a village, are sought-after by many, as well as access to a wide range of amenities right on the doorstep. “Previously, buyers would move out of London to fulfil that criteria, but with the increasing pace of life and longer working hours, ‘village’ areas in central London are a more desirable option for many families and professionals.” New homes developers have cottoned on to this recently. An example of this is to be found in East London. When developers wanted to give the myriad apartment blocks built within the Olympic site some appeal it therefore became a village. And Berkeley Homes is currently building the latest – what it calls Kidbrooke Village, one of four new residential districts in Greenwich.

£1.125 Million

There is also New River Village, a new residential area being built around a former Victorian pumping station in Hornsey. But some villages have more solid claims to the label. Battersea, for example, was a village until the mid-10th century when the railway arrived and the area expanded. In North London there’s also originals such as Highgate and Hampstead. Others are new villages created by communities. Zena Alkayat, author of the guidebook London Villages: Explore the City’s Best Local Neighbourhoods, believes it’s about the community taking ownership of its area, working together to provide public spaces that best serve the local people. “When that happens, you get a really appealing, fun and interesting place,” she recently told City AM. An interesting newish creation is Connaught Village in Bayswater, an area that clearly fascinates agent Christopher Sellwood. “Despite its central location and close proximity to Hyde Park, Connaught Street was perceived as an extension of Edgware Road, popular with Middle Eastern buyers, until Connaught Village was created 4-5 years ago, bringing with it a versatile range of high-profile amenities including art galleries, fashion boutiques and popular cafes and restaurants,” he says. So do you have to pay more to buy a home in one? London agent Kinleigh, Folkard and Hayward recently looked at village prices. According to the research, Hampstead village is the most expensive with an average house price of £1,525,109. The least expensive is Charlton in Greenwich where it’s £292,679. u

THE GREATEST PREMIUMS ARE PAID FOR THE CHALETS THAT ARE FAR ENOUGH UP THE MOUNTAIN TO OFFER EYE-CATCHING VIEWS ACROSS THE VALLEY

SKI IN, SKI OUT How much more for a ski-in, ski-out chalet? Wo r d s N I G E L L E W I S

I

f you have ever been on a budget chalet holiday then you’ll appreciate the phrase ‘ski-in, ski-out’. Feeling very pleased that you had nailed a reasonablypriced week of skiing, you arrive at your destination only to find you are nowhere near a bubble or lift. At first the walk looks like a pleasant stroll. But in the mornings, laden with heavy skis, walking in leg-breaking boots and nursing a hangover from the previous evening’s toffee vodka-fuelled exertions, it’s like a polar trek. This may be fine when you’re in your 20s, but as most skiers get older and have a little more money in their pocket, they’re prepared to pay extra for a chalet that offers the opportunity to ski in and ski out. And so it is in the French, Swiss and Austrian Alpine ski property markets.

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

CHIS_Feb16_NIGEL_Ski.indd 132

ABOVE

Buyers with relatively deep pockets are prepared to go that extra £300,000 to £1 million for a ski-in, ski-out chalet. But finding the right one requires very detailed knowledge of each resort and this is when a local estate agent is absolutely indispensable. Most ski resorts that are dominated by the chalet market (rather than flats and hotels) such as Meribel are often criss-crossed with small residential roads and peppered with hidden lifts and paths to the pistes. All of which makes property valuation very difficult, particularly in the Alps. For example, in the UK large houses in the leafiest streets with the best transport links and schools are usually the most expensive and sought after in our cities and towns. But not so in ski resorts. Size does matter but it’s more about the luxury extras such as sun balconies, indoor swimming pools,

outdoor Jacuzzis and mountain views from the lounge. But trumping all these qualities is proximity to a ski lift. What’s the point of paying £3 million for a lovely chalet if you have to drive back down to the resort’s central lifts every morning? Or walk along slippery pavements to a lift that gets you just a quarter of the way up the mountain? The greatest premiums are paid for the chalets that are far enough up the mountain to offer eye-catching views across the valley but from which you can ski out and straight on to a lift that will whisk you up to the major runs. And ideally these chalets need to be further enough down the valley so you can ski back home directly in the evening from your après drinks in one of the mid-level sun terraces. There is a downside, though. Jeremy Rollason of Alpine Homes in Association with Savills, says the hunt for a home that’s got the ideal position can mean you end up with a chalet that’s hard to get to by car and can be a long walk to the nearest bar. “In fact, walking distance to the centre of a resort is considered to be equally important as ski-in, ski out by the majority of buyers,” he says. “However, the attraction of skiing to and from your chalet is hard to resist and values can be 10-20% higher for this privilege.” u

Until his death in 1923, he lived at 21 Queen Anne’s Gate in Westminster, using the Grade I listed property as his office and private home. NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW… WHO LIVED HERE

eteran Brit actor Michael Caine, 82, recently told Variety that keeping things fresh had been the key to his success and confessed that while he has semi-retired from acting, he also has a hard time saying no to really good film roles. The actor famously left the UK in the 1970s to escape the clutches of the taxman. However, he has since returned and lives in a 200-year-old barn conversion on the outskirts of Leatherhead in Surrey and also has a two-bedroom flat in Chelsea Harbour. But while the 60s were swinging, Caine lived in a terraced house near London’s Hyde Park, making some of his best-known films, including The Italian Job and Alfie. Originally two mews houses which have been merged since his time there, this property has been completely refurbished by the current owners, with oak flooring, air conditioning, and designer kitchen. u

Donovan got into film production in the early 70s and moved his studio to a Grade II listed Victorian property in fashionable Mayfair. It was his creative HQ from 1978 to 1996, playing host to celebrity shoots including Twiggy, Lennox Lewis, Cindy Crawford and Bryan Ferry. The property became derelict until developers Candy & Candy recently gave it a Bond-style makeover. The five-bedroom property is now on the market for £18m with stacks of glam touches including a glass ‘champagne wall’, where 400 bottles can be chilled and illuminated next to the dining area.

NICE FLAT, WHAT ABOUT THE SHOWER?

aster of suspense Alfred Hitchcock was one of our most celebrated filmmakers. The Psycho director rented the top two floors of a house in

M

Cromwell Road, near Earls Court. He lived there with his wife Alma after their wedding in 1926. Their daughter Patricia was born shortly after. Their dining room was often used as a base for working on film projects with Hitchcock’s collaborators, as the great director liked to work from home, preferably wearing his favourite blue silk pyjamas and matching dressing gown. While there, Hitchcock directed the Thirty Nine Steps, but he left England in 1939 after Hollywood came calling. He moved to America where most of his films were then set. The lower ground floor onebedroom property in the Cromwell Road building is now up for sale at £599,950. Newly refurbished, the

open plan flat has a bedroom with en-suite bathroom as well as fresh air heating and cooling and in-built audio system. u

he Dave Clark Five rivalled the Beatles as Britain’s most popular band at the height of their fame, before splitting in 1971. Clark got into property and converted two floors of office space above The Curzon cinema in Mayfair into a duplex penthouse in 1967. His Grade II listed pad saw plenty of star-studded parties where Freddie Mercury, Leo Sayer and Dionne Warwick would attend. The current owners have given the four-bedroom home a makeover. It has a gym, 360 degree views across the capital and a private terrace. It's on the market for £15.5m. u
