LETTER
I
ON THE COVERS: Chiswick: Lickerish; West: Lickerish
have a circle of friends who are very much devoted to their vinyl collection and record players. Despite my pleas to stick on Spotify after their battered copy of The Smiths skips for the hundredth time, I understand the inherent pleasure in nostalgic collectables (though I sometimes scoff at the cost of indulging them). But it’s books that are my passion – fitting for my job in print media – as the Internet constantly changes the industry. For this, admittedly rather selfish reason, I had wanted to do a piece on Fosters’ Bookshop for some time. It’s petite and charming and just begs for a curious mind to have a root, but is far from being a flailing little business despite being one of only a handful left in the capital. Turn to page 14 for the gregarious Stephen Foster’s views on independents and battling the Kindle... There’s a plethora of interviews to keep you entertained this month, including author Bryan Appleyard, who’s written an homage to Bedford Park, and Chiswick-based writer Carla McKay, who gives us an entertaining and witty insight into her experience of yoga – devoid of any spiritual mumbo jumbo. Hollywood hotshot Benedict Cumberbatch talks to Tony Ferenz about his muchanticipated turn as a good old fashioned British baddie in Star Trek: Into Darkness. Meanwhile, TV favourite Jamie Theakston opens the door of his stunning Chiswick house – currently on the market for a cool £6.5 million. Time for a career change, perhaps... Until next month.

Bryan Appleyard, Author of Bedford Park YOU SEEM TO HAVE A GREAT LOVE OF BEDFORD PARK, WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE AREA THAT APPEALS TO YOU? Bedford Park is one of the most extraordinary places in London. It was the first development of its kind in the world and it symbolises, for me, a period I love – basically the late Victorian and Edwardian period. Bedford Park expressed a determination to provide a very English, rather nostalgic but, at the same time, bright, fresh and modern environment for the middle classes. I’ve been going there for more than a decade just for the pleasure of looking at what to me is an enchanted, timeless place.
FREDERICK (FRANK) HAMILTON JACKSON LITHOGRAPH, 1881, IMAGE PROVIDED BY THE BEDFORD PARK SOCIETY
IS THERE A LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT BEDFORD PARK THAT YOU CAN TELL US? Tricky that. Over the years there have been many things which I may have forgotten. I don’t know how well known it is but Stepniak, the Russian revolutionary who killed the Chief of Police in St Petersburg, lived there and was apparently welcomed. It was an early example of what Tom Wolfe was later to call radical chic. I also like the fact that he was killed by a train on the level crossing –
of the stuff. Also seriousness – this includes the great comedies of the time – we find it hard to be serious now as religion has sunk so low in our concerns, politics had become a game and we think, wrongly, that all the big questions have been answered or are ignored. This is just a phase but it’s a boring one and escaping to the intellectual and artistic fervour of the period was a delight for me and I hope will be for readers.
modernity taking its revenge. HOW HOSTORICALLY ACCURATE IS THE NOVEL?
There’s a note at the end of the book saying what is true. Plainly a lot of the characters are real, though I take many liberties with them. I did a lot of research when I first started the book and then I set it all aside. I wanted to absorb it but forget it at the same time. The book is about poetry, among other things, and there are lots of anachronistic almost quotes in there – Bob Dylan included! – and I think of it as a poetic evocation of the period rather than an accurate account. WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS LACKING FROM MODERN SOCIETY THAT WAS PRESENT BACK THEN? Genius. These islands were full
WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN W.B. YEATS AND MAUD GONNE THAT SPARKED THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS NOVEL? It was the romance of that meeting, the love at first sight aspect of it. I’ve never been quite convinced Yeats did love her, he just needed to be in love and to suffer for it. I don’t find her an attractive character but she was fascinating, absurd in many ways. I imagine her as a gusher and I loathe gushers. I contrast her strongly with the other love interests in the book, Dora Parsons, whom I adore. IS THERE A PART OF YOURSELF IN THE PROTAGONIST, CALHOUN KIDD? Sadly yes. It was unintentional but I couldn’t help using him to exaggerate my worst failings – procrastination, a certain passivity, lack of confidence and a failure to assert my own best interests. The most important thing about him is his weak conviction that there is a secret to the world that he has never been told and which he keeps trying to discover. That’s me all over Bedford Park by Bryan Appleyard, £3.99 published by Orion Books is out now

LOVE BITES
New to cinemas, Byzantium tells the story of vampires Clara and Eleanor, a mother and daughter (in the less than conventional sense) and their struggle to balance living a relatively normal life and keeping their secret. This, however, proves difficult when eternal schoolgirl Eleanor falls for a local boy and decides to trust him with their true identities. Directed by Neil Jordan and starring Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan, Byzantium has managed to find a new angle on the slightly overdone vampire mythology. Vue Cinema Shepherds Bush, W12; myvue.com

Though it hasn’t graced our skies since its retirement in 2003, Concorde remains a symbol of great British engineering and innovation. It is rather apt, then, that Hammersmith-based designer Sebastian Conran has named his new stainless steel sculpture ICON, as it utilises Concorde’s distinguishable nose. The unique artwork will be unveiled and on display at this year’s Royal Ascot. 18 - 22 June; ascot.co.uk/go/royalascot
L CHISWICK PRESS LOCARY Charles Whittingham is one of those unsung literary heroes. He did not write great novels, or fine poetry; he was a printer. When Victorian Britain was crying out for books in the HISTO middle of the 19th century, a wave of rich eccentrics, like Mr Whittingham, were opening private printing presses across the country to feed the Empire’s appetite for the written word. The Chiswick Press specialised in making cheap and slim volumes, bucking the trend of other printers that produced large books at high prices, allowing the masses to buy more literature. The most famous work printed at the Chiswick Press was The Elements of Euclid, a scientific tome on the subject of geometry. This book would later sell at auction for £2,146 in 1996.

Paperback Writer Has the Kindle diminished our love of the hardback? Gemma Billington asks the man in the know, Stephen Foster, owner of Chiswick High Road’s oldest store, Fosters’ Bookshop
W
alking along Chiswick High Road, I often can’t resist the lure of Fosters’ Bookshop. Volumes of all shapes, sizes and subjects are stacked precariously on top of one another and beg for a delicate hand to thumb through their pages. The shop is petite and unimposing, and it just so happens to be the oldest on the High Road, dating back to the 18th century.
The family-run business has been trading for over 40 years and second-generation owner Stephen Foster is the archetypal independent bookshop proprietor: bearded, tweed clad and charmingly enthusiastic. Once inside, there’s not much of a tour to undergo, but the sheer amount of stuff (for want of a better word) means that the eye doesn’t quite know where to settle. When I enquire as to the general order of the stock I’m met with a booming laugh, ‘order?! Don’t be ridiculous.’ In truth, the books are grouped into their relevant subjects, but left characteristically unregimented. ‘We want to encourage people to browse,’ Foster admits, ‘many times people come in asking for a specific book and they end up buying something completely different.’ Whilst his business remains a popular and thriving one, like many independents, Stephen has seen his industry change irrevocably over the past few years because of advances in technology. Far from being stuck in the past, however, Fosters’ have been utilising the internet for some time and make a lot of their trade online. But surely the biggest change the bookshop seller has faced in recent years has been the electronic

reader which has, in a relatively short period of time, completely revolutionised the public’s attitude to reading. The subject of new technology is never far from our conversation, but Stephen is unfazed; ‘because we don’t sell that many paperbacks, we’re not as affected by it (the Kindle)’ he admits, ‘it’s affected the new book market so much more than us – people aren’t going to be taking leather bound first editions on holiday with them.’ With niche businesses, there is always an air that they are one of a dying breed and we discuss the demise of such companies – the shock liquidation of HMV – and the ensuing wave of shock and nostalgia. ‘People take a certain comfort that shops like mine exist, but the reality is that if they don’t come and buy books from me, we’re not going to be here.’ He says matter of factly. Fosters’ have history and popularity – both locally and on an international level – on their side and Stephen is continuously on the hunt for literary gems, but admits that a lot of stuff ‘gravitates towards them’ as they’re so renowned. This ‘stuff ’ also
includes a spattering of greetings cards, maps, illustrations and local memorabilia. It is somewhat surprising to learn that another string to the Fosters’ Bookshop’s bow is their involvement in the film industry as prop providers. ‘We’ve worked on Sherlock Holmes, Great Expectations, James Bond, Prometheus...’ At this point I beg him to go back a step: ‘Yes Prometheus was an odd one,’ Stephen laughs, ‘they hired books with
a book valuable is a combination of things. You can have books that are scarce – as in there are few copies of them around – but if it’s not desirable as well then it’s sort of irrelevant. You wouldn’t say that James Bond first editions were printed in small numbers, but they’re incredibly sought after. Within that, the book’s condition becomes a factor. Some people say “I’ve got a Beatrix Potter first edition” only for it to turn out that several generations of children have crayoned all over it!’ As someone who works in publishing, I’m regularly faced with the question of whether I’m part of a dying industry. Much like the avid vinyl collector who still adores the crackling sound of the needle, books will always tap into a certain nostalgia and retain an inherent pleasure that cannot be emulated through a touch screen. The ‘death of print’ is an exaggeration, and Fosters’ will no doubt remain stalwarts in the industry for many more generations to come.
‘You can have books that are
scarce, but if they’re not desirable too then it’s sort of irrelevant’ gilded edges from us for a lighting effect.’ Browsing through the shop I take heed of the polite notice to remove all backpacks (it’s next to the ‘mind your ‘ed’ sign) but one of the pleasant surprises about Fosters’ is the affordability – a lot of their wares start from around the £20 mark. ‘One of the great misconceptions is that all old books are worth money’ Stephen says, ‘what makes

SPACE RACE Benedict Cumberbatch is upgrading. For starters, he’s swapped 221B Baker Street for the Starship Enterprise. But it doesn’t end there for the west London actor, as Tony Ferenz finds out
B
enedict Cumberbatch is aware of his strengths and it appears Hollywood has quickly cottoned on to his strongest suit. ‘I have the long face, the gentrified tones – I’m a blueprint for the quintessential British bad guy,’ he quietly laughs, expressing a little sardonic humour. Swiftly becoming one of LA’s hottest names, Cumberbatch is indeed crafting a fine niche as the dastardly villain. Now while previous projects had showcased his natural and powerful versatility as an actor – namely his work
in War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a mesmerising performance as renowned physicist Stephen Hawking in a sweeping BBC biopic, and, of course, a star-making turn as Sherlock, it’s his forthcoming work that’s attracting the ‘bad guy’ label. Soon to appear as the main antagonist in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek: Into Darkness, and set to play Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, in the highly controversial The Fifth Estate, does he find himself attracted to bad guy roles? ‘Yes and no,’ he says. ‘I am very aware of cookie cutter, two-dimensional villains and the English transition of an actor being from
a different culture coming over, and they are being like, “God, this guy does theatre and stuff. We’d better give him the bad guy role and a cape and just make him really horrible”.’ ‘With Star Trek, it was really the script; it was the pitch that JJ gave me a couple of scenes to audition with, and he fleshed out the whole world of the rest of the script. There’s a purpose and intention to his otherwise violent and pretty distressing actions that made it really intriguing. And I thought, “Well okay, there’s a purpose to this man; he’s not just the antagonist”.’ Born in Shepherd’s Bush, Benedict grew up 17

‘Eventually my dad said, “You are better than I was or ever will be; you will have a really good time doing this for a living.” And I cried at that moment.’
in a performer’s household as the son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham. Understandably, both were concerned when their only child decided to follow in their footsteps. ‘They just saw the pitfalls of it every day, and you don’t know where your next job is coming from and it’s unstable, into which they were having a child, me. You don’t want that; you want stability for your children. You want something better and everything that was bad about it for them, they wanted me to be free of for me, but I just kept on doing it, kept on doing it, at school and University. ‘And eventually my dad said, “you are better than I was or ever will be; you will have a really good time doing this for a living.” And I cried at that moment. I thought, “Okay, if I’ve got his blessing, then I’m going to do it”.’ Single following a 12-year relationship with actress Olivia Poulet, Cumberbatch, who has already experienced a certain level of ‘fandemonium’ off the back of Sherlock, is surely poised for the stratosphere after the release of Star Trek: Into Darkness. Is he prepared? ‘Prepared for what really?’ He asks
nonchalantly. ‘I mean, look, yes Star Trek is a huge deal and if people want to come up to me, so be it. But I’m not expecting Beatledom, so there’s no point anticipating ‘it’, as it were.’ Was a young Benedict even a fan of the old Star Trek series? ‘Not a huge deal,’ he admits, candidly. ‘I watched it and I knew of it, and I’ve seen pretty much every generation of it, but I have never been an obsessed fan; I’ve never had that longing to be in the club... any sort of club – not even a football club. But I guess it’s something to do with being an only child. I was very gregarious, but I don’t think
I ever obsessed with anything, I just sort of bought the t-shirt.’ The inevitable quandary over a move to Los Angeles is surely something that is on the mind for the charismatic actor. Shall London be losing one of its brightest luminaries? ‘Absolutely not,’ he states. ‘People have floated this idea of moving but I have no desire to do anything of the sort. To be honest, that whole notion of moving Stateside when you ‘make it’ is dead and buried. It’s 2013, we have sophisticated methods of travel nowadays.’ That will undoubtedly come as a relief to fans of Sherlock, who witnessed the great detective die in the final season, only to be resurrected for the forthcoming series. How long more will Benedict remain with the BBC smash hit, does he think? ‘For as long as it makes sense, I guess. But without wishing to sound brazen, I think it will die with me, to be honest – you couldn’t have someone else taking over. It’s not like Doctor Who; Sherlock doesn’t regenerate.’ Thankfully, Benedict Cumberbatch does.

Under pressure A leading head teacher has condemned ‘hothousing’ children. Are we asking too much of our children too soon? By Amanda Constance
W
e all know the sort, don’t we? Those children for whom the odd ballet, piano or swimming lesson isn’t quite enough. No, little Atticus has a maths and English tutor, plus Kumon, Mandarin and extra French lessons after school; and that’s before drama, violin and flute lessons on a Saturday morning. His parents, pushy, anxious and ever-present, schedule his every waking moment in the pursuit of excellence; they started plotting how to get poor Atticus into St Paul’s the moment the umbilical cord was cut. Now Richard Harman, headmaster of the prestigious Uppingham School, in Rutland, has said enough is enough. A few weeks ago, he condemned such pushy parenting saying the current approach ‘may get short-term results but risks long-term damage.’ Harman, who is taking over as leader of the Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference next year, condemned teachers and parents who create a ‘hothouse atmosphere’, adding that, ‘the entire social life of some London parents is consumed by whether or not their children are going to get into the school of their choice. They put their children through seven, eight or nine entrance tests. There is paranoia and a pressure that is just unhealthy for parents, as well as their children.’
And the evidence seems to suggest this hothousing is starting at an increasingly younger age. The latest edition of the Good Schools Guide made headlines this year when it revealed that some turbo-charged London parents have been hoping to get their little darlings a head start by paying for professional interview coaching for their three-year-olds. Such startling news raises the question: why do parents feel the need to do it and why on earth are pre-preps interviewing prospective pupils? The answer is simple: the best schools in the capital are massively oversubscribed from pre-
Of course, it isn’t wrong to be academically ambitious for your child. But Anthony Seldon, headmaster of Wellington College, says all too often well-meaning parents are convinced that their offspring are brighter than they really are. This may be because of their own academic ambitions or due to a distorted vision of what their child should achieve, both of which only increase the stress for the child. Seldon’s advice is to listen to the teachers and remember to ‘love our children wisely.’ You only need to go online to see that it is anxiety as much as ambition that is causing us to hothouse our youngsters. The parental blogosphere is full of worries about competition; from a shrinking job market to an ever more crowded world to academically brilliant Chinese children. Harman agrees that difficult economic times have fuelled the panic but his answer is that, ‘instead of focusing on results, schools and parents must help children handle failure, develop different strengths and become resilient people who can make relationships with others, because that is what brings proper happiness in life-long terms.’ Charles Milne, Eton’s tutor for admissions, concurs. He says that when looking for its brightest boys – the so-called King’s Scholars – Eton looks for ‘boys with an original and enquiring mind, with the ability to go beyond the mere regurgitation of knowledge.’
‘You only need to go online to see that it is anxiety as much as ambition that is causing us to hothouse our youngsters’ prep upwards, so parents are doing everything they can to squeeze that little bit ahead in the race. Yet, ironically, as any sane parent or teacher already knows; you can’t coach a three year-old for an interview. Jo Newman, head of North London Collegiate Junior School – all girls, reception to year 6, and which selects 40 four-year-olds from around 200 applicants – told the Good Schools Guide: ‘I always tell parents that if they’re paying to coach three-year-olds, they might as well burn £20 notes. The only useful preparation is to talk to them, play with them and read them stories.’

Something to smile about The Smiling World Foundation are on a health mission in Sierra Leone. Raffaella Gabassi tells Absolutely how a simple act of kindness can change lives
S
ierra Leone remains one of the poorest countries in the world. There is only one dentist per 1.1 million people and, of these, only one works in the public sector, despite the fact that most Sierra Leoneans cannot afford private healthcare. The lack of services available and a general lack of knowledge of oral health means that people suffer from dental-related issues for long periods of time. A simple toothache leaves children in agony and unable to eat, leading to malnutrition and a weakened immune system. They are also unable to sleep or go to school. Unfortunately, the infection often spreads and leads to life-threatening conditions such as osteomyelitis and septicaemia. In desperation, many Sierra Leoneans instead turn to ‘traditional’ medicine, which leads to permanent disfigurements and can even prove fatal. The Smiling World Foundation was founded by Raffaella Gabassi in association with White Dental and Cosmetic Rooms in Chiswick, as one of the very few charitable organisations established to promote oral health through education. Our mission is to stop this unnecessary suffering. Our team of volunteer dentists and dental professionals work across the country of Sierra Leone, reaching remote villages, treating oral disease and educating
‘A simple toothache leaves children in agony and unable to eat, leading to malnutrition and a weakened immune system’ children in destitute situations. We are a child-centered organisation, however, we believe that involving adults is an essential part of the eradication of oral disease, as they will implement the values of oral hygiene long after our visit. Prevention is better than cure, and education is the key to it.
There is still much we can do for Sierra Leone, which is why our ultimate goal is to build a Dental Therapist school in Freetown. Such an establishment means that not only is a bright and eager young mind provided a life skill and a livelihood, but there will also be more dental professionals to carry out the good work. It is an exciting time for the Foundation as our proposal is met with much enthusiasm by the governing authorities. Be a part of this exciting time and give a child back their future by supporting our mission in Sierra Leone. So little can amount to so much: • £20 a year can buy 70 toothbrushes • £50 a year can buy 200 painkillers or antibiotics • £100 a year can provide one year of schooling for a child, which includes one meal a day • £200 a year can pay for 3 life saving operations
The children of Sierra Leone deserve every bit of help we can give them. We owe it to their spirit. For more information on how you can help, please visit our website: www.smilingworld.org

Age concern
Sarah Brown, Chiswick resident and founder of Pai Skincare, gives Absolutely her advice on skincare for the over 40s. The secret to great skin doesn’t lie in quick fixes or miracle ‘wrinkle-busters’, but in taking the best care of your skin health each and every day. Here are some of my top tips for achieving radiant, revitalised skin that you can feel truly confident in. A balanced approach Maintaining skin balance is key to guaranteeing a healthy complexion. The first step to doing this is correcting your cleansing
If you haven’t been abroad yet, Laura Mercier have put together the perfect collection to achieving that post-holiday glow. The new Shimmer Guide, launched exclusively at House of Fraser, includes five must-have easy-to-use products including foundation, shimmer block and lip glacé. £42.50, 80 George St, TW9; houseoffraser.co.uk
regime. Avoid alcohol-based wipes that contain detergents as they strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt pH balance. Skin supplements As we get older, our skin slows down production of its oil, proteins and fatty acids, so it’s important we supplement these key skin nutrients. Our new Echium & Amaranth Age Confidence Oil has the unique ability to strengthen and protect Collagen – the plumping proteins that break down as we age. Creams vs Oils While oils can deliver instant results, only creams can hydrate – so are much more effective when it comes to alleviating dryness. A good skincare regime should incorporate both: creams in the morning, oils at night. paiskincare.com

his fit and active 40-year-old had been suffering from Plantar Fasciitis – a painful inflammation of the tissue on the sole of the foot. ‘I was treated by an osteopath, a physiotherapist and a sports therapist but nothing really eased the pain,’ explained Andrea. As her job involves a lot of standing and walking, life was becoming unbearable. She was also unable to partake in her favourite hobby, running. Then Andrea saw an advert for Foot Solutions and decided to pay them a visit. ‘I turned up hoping that someone would be able to help me,’ she said, ‘and it was the best decision I have ever made. The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and attentive and after half an hour of tests and examinations they found a solution. It was the most fantastic

service I could have imagined.’ Foot Solutions provided Andrea with custom shoe inserts and a special device to help stretch her feet at night. ‘The device gave me immediate relief from the pain, allowing me to sleep better and when the inserts were fitted in my shoes they made a huge difference.’ ‘I had faced the prospect of never being able to wear high heels – but I can now wear them for up to 14 hours if necessary.’ ‘I don’t suffer at all now. I can do my job and go running without constant pain. I will never buy shoes anywhere else again.’ Foot Solutions, 4 Red Lion Street, Richmond TW9 1RW Telephone 020 8940 1814, www.footsolutions.com/richmond-surrey

Stretch of the imagination Writer and journalist Carla McKay, who splits her time between Chiswick and Oxfordshire, gives Absolutely an insight into her new book, The Reluctant Yogi When I turned 50, like everybody else, I had a bit of a mid-life crisis, I’d separated from my husband, had bolshy teenage children and I was pretty unfit. I knew I had to do something to get back into shape and to raise my self esteem. I was always very sceptical about yoga, I didn’t want to go on some kind of spiritual journey which is what yoga seemed to be all about. For me, anything that doesn’t show up in an autopsy doesn’t exist! I’d previously tried a couple of yoga classes in village halls but wasn’t too impressed. Then I was persuaded by a cousin of mine to go on a yoga retreat in India and I began to see the point in it and I really got into it. I got good at it too. I still wasn’t interested in all the spiritual aspects of it but I was really interested in how my body felt.
The thing that surprised me most about yoga is how quickly it works for aches and pains. My backache instantly got better. Also the emotional high you get from it. Yoga slows you down with the breathing and it’s incredibly relaxing. I even started to sleep better. When I started researching for the book I realised that yoga has astonishing health benefits, but The Reluctant Yogi isn’t just a love affair with yoga. It’s recognising the benefits, yes, but it’s also about things like how completely unregulated the yoga industry is in this country. I’ve also gone into the blatant commercialisation of it – it’s a multi-billion dollar industry. All these yoga gurus, turning themselves into brands – surely that’s contrary to the whole yoga ethos. I recommend yoga to everyone; I’m a yoga bore. Don’t be put off by your age, your size, your weight... it’s for absolutely everybody. I’ve truly seen miracles in my class. A very overweight, depressed man whose wife had died unexpectedly was encouraged by his son to take up yoga and his life was just transformed. There’s a growing number of physicians who study yoga after medical school. What I’ve tried to say in the book is that people like me – who are a bit overweight, who do have the occasional fag and drink too much wine – can still do it. You don’t have to become like Gwyneth Paltrow spouting sanscrit and being holier than thou!
When you get the older, the prospect of losing your mobility and being bent over with a stick is terrifying. But I quickly saw what the health benefits of yoga were. My muscles started remembering all the things I used to be able to do and should have still been doing but weren’t. Things like doing headstands came back to me!
5 things you didn’t know about yoga...
1. It unites the world The word yoga is derived from the sanskrit ‘root yuj’ meaning to ‘yoke’ or ‘join’. Often this word is used to mean the yoking (joining of the subconscious to the supreme spirit. 2. It’s good for mind and body Research has suggested that yoga helps with the social and occupational problems associated with schizophrenia.
Photos ©Willow and Pea The Reluctant Yogi: A Quirky Guide to the Practice that can Change your Life by Carla McKay, published by Gibson Square Books, is out now; amazon.co.uk
3. It’s great for common pains A study conducted at the University of York found that Yoga is very beneficial for lower back pain. 4. It’s not all ‘oming’ and ‘ahing’ The yoga ‘om’ symbol found in Hindu philosophy is supposed to be the primordial sound of the universe. 5. It’s gone to the dogs A new style of yoga has recently made its way from trendy New York that involves your furry four-legged friend. ‘Doga’ combines all the usual poses of a traditional yoga practice, but dogs join in as a prop – apparently appealing to their natural instinct to stretch. This helps strengthen the bond between owner and pet. And no, that’s not what Carla’s doing with Billy (pictured left).

Ask the Experts Group Wellness manager for the Hogarth and Park Club, Terry Rodham, gives Absolutely his expert advice on getting fit for life
Dear readers, Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Terry Rodham and I am the Group Wellness Manager for The Hogarth Health Club in Chiswick and The Park Club. At the grand old age of 42, I have a wealth of experience in what is typically referred to as the health and fitness business, having initially studied in the States on a basketball scholarship, become an American College of Sports Medicine Examiner, toured and trained a certain Formula 1 team, and have worked with various well known personalities from the film and music industry! Having worked in a gymnasium capacity for the Hogarth Group for 25 years, my key role now is to maximise a rather large investment in the new Technogym equipment and systems and help Hogarth Group members achieve everything they want in our clubs. Over the months, my goal is to provide Absolutely readers with some useful information to help you look and feel great, and for your welllness to be optimised. So without further ado – let’s kick off! Wellness – what is it? When we asked a group of members at The Hogarth what wellness means to them, we received, as expected, a wide variety of responses. Typical responses were: general
wellbeing, looking and feeling good, being stress free, being and remaining wealthy and, quite simply, being happy and to smile lots! Any response or opinion to what wellness actually means is of course personal and relevant to each person, but what is very clear is that wellness plays an extremely important role in all of our lives. Summarising wellness is difficult as it really is unique to us all, but it generally means living longer, having more energy, being more efficient at work and having physical, mental and social wellbeing. Perhaps wellness is best summed up as being able to do what you want to be able to do! So how do we achieve Wellness? This involves engaging in regular physical activity, eating balanced and healthy meals and being mentally positive. There are some interesting aspects of The Technogym Wellness Lifestyle Pyramid®, which we will be exploring in future editions, not least the concept that the more you move the more chocolate you can eat! However, for now it’s worth taking a wider view of how we can influence the interchange between movement, nutrition and a positive mental attitude to best achieve wellness in our lives.
‘The more you move the more chocolate you can eat!’ Having positive mental support of other people is a good starting place. Having knowledge of the effect of different food groups and their effect on our bodies is important too. And being physically active is key but this can be anywhere, not just in a gymnasium. In fact, perhaps the future of health clubs, gyms and fitness centres is in providing fantastic knowledge, experience and services to convey the benefits of wellness both in the club and out. Of course, the focus will be on physical activity, but other aspects of a wellness lifestyle will also be considered and built into your wellness plan. The Hogarth Group has elected to partner with Technogym to offer the ultimate wellness experience to members, what they call “Wellness on the Go”, the ability to experience wellness anywhere, at anytime. By Terry Rodham; Hogarth Group Wellness Manager Next edition: Wellness on the go! For further info, please call The Hogarth on 020 8994 0500 or visit thehogarth.co.uk. Airedale Avenue, W4 2NW

aving recently gone on the market, the details of Jamie Theakston’s stunning Chiswick home read like an estate agent’s dream: detached, five bedrooms, master bedroom with his & hers en-suite, a summer house and off-street gated parking. Oh, and there’s a wine cellar in the basement too. Unlike the plethora of celebs who idly show an MTV camera crew around their ostentatious, pristine abodes, Jamie has been hands-on with both the renovation and interior design and has established himself as something of a property whizz, having previously renovated a Grade I-listed Tudor house in East Sussex. The TV and radio presenter’s home reflects his suburban lifestyle – sharing the house with wife Sophie and his two sons – but there’s a touch of rock ‘n’ roll in the interior scheme and the blend of old and modern works beautifully. If sold at the asking price, (£6.5 million) it will be the most expensive house sold in Chiswick that doesn’t include a riverside view and the second most expensive house sold in the area. That particular record goes to Jasper Conran, who sold Walpole House for a whopping £12.5 million. We spoke to Jamie about his hidden interior design talents... What was the house on Barrowgate Road like when you originally moved in? What changes did you make and why? It was in a pretty sorry state – the previous owners hadn’t done anything to the house for 30 years. It had two asymmetrical extensions to the rear and I decided that the only way to make the house work again was to tear them both down and start again from scratch.

What have you enjoyed about living in Chiswick? I like the fact that you get twice the sq ft for the same price 10 minutes further into town. I had lived in Notting Hill for 20 years, had kids and needed the space. It’s a well worn path! 49

How has your taste in design changed over the years? Did having children affect your design schemes? My children have grown up with modern design since they were babies - we only had one significant loss, a large Murano Glass floor lamp that I had bought back from Turin. Have you always been interested in property and interior design? I worked at Christies after I left school – I fell in love with collecting furniture there. Are you hands-on with DIY or do you tend to leave it to the experts? If I have time to undo my mistakes, I’ll give it a go!

Every year, 750,000 privately owned gardens up and down the country open up to the public in the sunnier months of the year. The money earned from the open days is then collected and distributed to various charities. This year there are a fine selection of gardens to view in Richmond, such as Osterley Park, 1 St Helena Terrace and the stunningly constructed garden at 7 St Georges Road (pictured). Green Fingers Updates from a gardener’s world
June is a pleasant month to be working in the garden: not too hot but warm enough to feel the sun on your back! Pots are the order of the day, and you can get them planted up with an array of colourful annuals such as geranium, heliotrope, verbena and petunia. Just ensure you check the soil regularly as they will dry out easily, meaning your hard work will be wasted. All annuals benefit from regular feeds so plant with a slow release fertiliser or liquid feed twice a month. Deadhead the flowers to prolong the blooming season and the pots will reward you right up until the frosts. kategouldgardens.com
SHED SEVEN
Shed of the Year sponsors, Cuprinol, took on the rather bizarre task of scouring Britain in search of the country’s oldest shed, which just so happened to be rotting away in Chiswick. Owned by Kate Wilson, who was given the shed by a 94 year-old friend, it was given a much-needed make-over by trendy fashion house Eley Kishimoto, who jazzed it up using Cuprinol’s vibrant new range of garden paint. cuprinol.co.uk
KEY TO CONSERVATION
Sustainability and Wildlife are the cornerstones to any modern garden. On Sunday 2 June members of the public will be able to learn tips, tricks and general good practice on how to create your own beautiful and sustainable garden from the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust horticulture warden, Chris Le Lere. Taking place in the RCB Rain Garden, which focuses on water collection and providing habitats for wildlife, this garden gives a multitude of examples for you to take home and emulate in your own patch of greenery. org.uk/visit/london

HIGH STEAKS
Meat lovers of Chiswick rejoice! A new Argentinian restaurant specialising in their most famous export, beef, is opening up in Turnham Green Terrace. Describing itself as the ‘ultimate Argentinian experience’, Buenos Aires use an authentic parilla (barbeque) and the drinks menu will also have an air of authenticity as it features wines made with the popular Malbec grape. 32 Turnham Green Terrace, W4; barestaurant.com
Bite Sized A lunch-time revolution hits west London
Review
Chris Baldacci finds time for tapas at Tapas Revolution THE LOW DOWN
Situated in a bustling corner of Westfield shopping centre, Tapas Revolution is an ideal place to stop for a quick bite or even to linger for longer after a spot of retail therapy. Spanish food has never been held in high esteemed compared to its European neighbours, but 28-year old founder and chef Omar Allibhoy is on a mission to change our perceptions for good.
THE FOOD
The menu is no-fuss, classic tapas dishes such as patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, chorizo and paella. The perfectly cooked calamari was a particular highlight of our lunch. As well as being friendly and attentive, the staff (and a good deal of the clientele) are Spanish natives, providing abundant authenticity as we perch on the traditional bar setup and our little dishes begin to stack up.
FRENCH FANCY
Whilst a fruity jug of Pimm’s and lemonade is normally our summer tipple of choice, we’ve recently rediscovered the aniseed-soaked artisan liquor pastis, and in particular the brand Henri Bardouin and its heady, botanical soaked goodness. Traditionally served as an apéritif, simply mix 1 part Henri Bardouin to 5 – 6 parts water. You don’t even need to add ice as this apparently takes away from the botanical aromas. £20.75, available in Waitrose, 356 - 362 High Street, Chiswick W4; waitrose.com
DRINK
Classic Spanish beers such as Estrella complement the tapas perfectly, but once we spotted the waiter knocking up a tinto de verano (red wine and lemonade), we couldn’t resist a cheeky lunchtime tipple.
VERDICT
Authentic, delicious and affordable, Omar has done a fine job of putting tapas well and truly back on the culinary map. Viva la revolution! tapasrevolution.com

Kitchen talk
Designer and restaurateur Jasper Gorst speaks to Absolutely about his new restaurant, The Oak W12
consider the demographics. I don’t do any research in the area, I simply open the kind of places that I would like to frequent myself. I guess I do this for selfish reasons but it seems to work and this dates right back to my first bar (Jax). With The Oak W12, I have lived in the area for 10 years, so I know it well. I design everything in my head and create the concept. The Oak W12 has a mix of old and new. It will have a good use of colour and texture, and lighting is of paramount importance – it’s always one of the first things that I decide. It will have an industrial element too. Very exciting!
What is your culinary background? I left school early and I started my A Levels but only lasted a year. I studied art & ceramics and went on to selling timeshares in Spain but I only lasted four weeks! On my return to London I got my first bar job at The Pitcher and Piano on the Fulham Road. From the ages of 18 - 24 I was working in bars and on restaurant floors. I slowly worked my way up from barman to waiter to manager to general manager. When did you open your first bar? I started to think about it when I was 22. On the Monday, I had a flash of inspiration and on the Tuesday I left my job. Four weeks later, things had started to progress. I had no idea what I was doing at that stage and kept making mistake after mistake. I raised money through meeting people, I wrote a business plan and, through contacts, managed to start Jax. It opened in December 2001 with a bang – it was such an exciting time - I was 24 years old and the news soon spread. For the first couple of weeks, we had people queuing down the street and around the corner. I was very sociable in those days and had a large address book. I would hate to try and do the same thing again today as so much has changed. I made many mistakes in the beginning. It literally took about 5 years of making mistakes but it is the best way to learn – you never make the same mistake twice. What is the most challenging part of running a restaurant? It is mainly trying to find (and keep) the right staff. It is difficult to find excellent members of staff and they are key to a successful business. What advice would you give your 24-year old self? Focus on your strengths and employ somebody for your weaknesses. Keep an open mind:
on a number of occasions I have come across stumbling blocks. The main thing is that I should have listened to what other people were saying and not think that I always knew best. You don’t know best – period! It’s easy to get into a mindset where you think that you do but you need to be able to listen to others and filter their advice. What do you enjoy most about owning the restaurants? It combines my three passions: food, wine and design. I count my lucky stars every day! What process do you go through when you open up a new restaurant. What will The Oak W12 be like? I usually start by questioning whether the site is good. I look for neighbourhoods that have a certain sort of customer – I really
What has been the biggest change to the industry in the last few years? There is a focus these days on taking ingredients that are local and simple. It is now about each individual ingredient and what it can do. Produce is the most important thing now whereas 20 years ago people wanted Michelin style food and now people want local and simple. What trends are you seeing within the industry right now? In London, the industry has gone through a boom time. The bubble has got to burst at some point – it doesn’t feel as though it can keep growing at this rate because of the economic climate and there will be a slowdown in new openings. There will be an increase in closures, but I expect a rise in quality. The Oak W12 opens mid May, 243 Goldhawk Road, W12; theoakw12.com 63

Vegetarian food is often dismissed as bland or tasteless, but The Bingham Hotel shows how it’s done with their impressive – and surprising – vegetarian taster menu. Elaine O’Connell investigates
The Bingham

The
Good Life I
am a vegetarian. Well, technically, I’m a pescatarian, though this label is a little too pretentious for my liking so I tend to just admit (somewhat apologetically) that I don’t eat meat when out to dinner. Let’s face it, the vegetarian is often the unwanted dinner party guest, but if the recent horse meat scandal has taught us anything (other than a few equine puns) it’s that – whilst a meat-free diet isn’t necessarily the answer – questioning the source of our food and seeking the best quality produce is paramount to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Bingham is a Grade II-listed hotel consisting of only 15 bespoke bedrooms. A popular wedding venue, it’s not the most obvious choice for a night of veggie delights, but upon learning of their Vegetarian Taster menu, I felt impelled to test it out. There’s an immediate sense of informality despite the rather grand decor. The dining area is a
snug, welcoming environment with subtle shades of taupe and gold. As we’re guided to our table, it’s clear we’ve been given the best spot; a cosy two-seater beside a floor to ceiling window overlooking the river. Despite it being night-time, the views of the romantically lit river are still enchanting. The pleasures of a taster menu are immeasurable and my companion and I whiled away the hours blissfully in the company of an extremely friendly waiter and sommelier. The six-course feast is all perfectly paced and proportioned, each one leaving you excitedly anticipating the arrival of the next. The key to good vegetarian food is a touch of imagination and to utilise the ingredients you have to produce optimum flavour. Award-winning Head Chef Shay Cooper has pulled this off with aplomb. Rather tame choices such as gnocchi, wild mushroom ragout and even the dreaded risotto are made nothing short
of spectacular with a clever use of innovative ingredients that don’t verge into Heston Blumenthal territory. The smoked butter risotto with muscat jelly, garlic crisps and belper knolle cheese did, in fact, turn out to be my favourite. The slow cooked duck egg with glazed artichokes, pickled celery and hollandaise sauce came a very close second. After a selection of English and French cheeses, the evening was rounded off with a salted butter caramel apple compote with cider cream, bitter chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I can say without any exaggeration that it was the best caramel I’ve ever had. Vegetarian cuisine is something that everyone can enjoy and, when done well, can be just as delicious as any meat or alternative. Perhaps it’s time to take on the Meat Free Monday initiative the McCartneys have been peddling for years. The Bingham’s talent for vegetarian produce is a fine place to start. It may just surprise you. 65

Food& Travel THE HOTEL
When we get to Calcot Manor it is abuzz. People are arriving for a wedding in the 14th century tithe barn, 4 x 4s are disgorging blondes at the entrance to the hotel’s spa, small children are running around immaculate lawns in chill winter sunshine and the Gumstool pub, one of two restaurants in the hotel, is packed with visiting families and well-heeled locals in shiny wellies. This country house hotel, set in more than 220 acres of Cotswolds countryside near Tetbury in Gloucestershire, has managed that rare thing. It is all things to all people. It is both brilliantly family-friendly, with a staffed creche plus a raft of children’s activities and is also the perfect hideaway for weekending couples.
Calcot Manor Gloucestershire THE RESTAURANT
THE SPA
To sit immersed, a glass of cold champagne in hand, in the bubbling outdoor hot tub whilst a well-stoked fire roars in a brazier behind you and the reddening sun sets on a cold winter’s day must be one of life’s true pleasures. Calcot Spa is hugely popular, and rightly so. It offers both an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam, gym and a wealth of treatments to guests and members alike. A recent addition to the treatment menu is the Rodial skincare brand. An hour’s Sculpt Facial using Rodial’s Dragon’s Blood Serum range (£70) was not only relaxing but left my tired, windswept skin feeling really soft, smooth and rejuvenated.
THE DAMAGE
The starting price for a double room at a Calcot is £280 per night (breakfast and use of spa facilities included). Calcot Manor Near Tetbury Gloucestershire GL8 8YJ Hotel 01666 890 391 Spa 01666 891 232; calcotmanor.co.uk
The more formal of the two restaurants, The Conservatory, underwent an overhaul last year with a new look, new cocktail bar and a change of menu. Out went the classic ‘fine-dining’ and in came a more informal, eclectic menu. The chef, however, has stayed the same and, as a result, the menu is somewhat missing a distinct identity. However, our starters of risotto Milanese and beef shin were delicious and a main of marinated beef fillet was a notable highlight. Save room for starters rather than dessert – the better end of the menu.
THE BEDROOM
There are 35 individually designed rooms to choose from. These include ten dedicated family rooms housed in converted farm buildings which surround the courtyard whilst the ancient Cotswold stone manor house is home to 12 bedrooms to suit couples. Our room was a so-called ‘large family suite‘, although ‘house’ would be a more accurate description of our picturesque little clapboard cottage with its own garden and front door. Inside was pure luxury with a huge double bed in a large open room, plus another bedroom with bunks and an entire first floor given over to bathroom heaven. Under the eaves, two large adjacent baths faced a wall-mounted TV, and there is also a large walk-in shower. Naturally, we opted for a his ‘n’ hers bath, each filled to the brim with Aromotherapy Associate bubbles courtesy of the hotel and wallowed in front of trash telly until we had both turned into prunes. 67

A
n experience so luxurious you almost can’t believe it’s true. Timeless and elegant, this is a grande dame whose journeys are staggeringly good – and totally spectacular. The Fable of the Hills is the latest extravaganza from the Orient Express and, boy, what a triumph. Starting in Singapore, it’s a magical seven-day, six-night trip through Malaysia, past buzzing cities, tea plantations and royal palaces, before emerging in Bangkok. A stay in the wedding-cake-white Raffles – whose namesake founded Singapore – kicks off the enthralling adventure. A perpetual haven, the feel is romantic colonial: traditional afternoon tea, lots of pretty chandeliers, four-posters, marble… yet it’s not stuck in a time warp. This is a place bang up-to-date with Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co lining the courtyards. There are four restaurants, which cover any cuisine you can possibly imagine – ask for the legendary Singapore Sling, a lethal cocktail and another example of the hotel’s
excellence. Even check-in for the Eastern & Oriental Express is done in one of their reception rooms before you’re whisked off to the station. The storybook train is just what you imagine and more. Glistening in the Asian sun, lashings of green and cream decorate the 22 carriages. It looks so classic that you expect Poirot to come round the corner any second. He would have approved of the dress code too – relaxed refinement. No jeans or trainers, people! The imperial elegance (and the colour scheme) continues inside. Every wall is decorated in elm, cherry, teak and rosewood. Cabins are two person, postage stamp size but it doesn’t matter. Beds transform into upholstered sofas while nifty design tricks provide bucket loads of storage (even your suitcase is swallowed up). There’s a sparkling ensuite bathroom to boot with Bulgari products and a power shower. The spirit of Agatha Christie remains: the slick making up of beds, the pushing of bells to summon drinks, the whisperings in the corridor, the knock on the door by your personal butler (the smiley Prochak is a favourite). Venture
out of your new-found bedroom, down the thick carpeted corridors and there are plenty of places to relax: the saloon, library, bar, and the breezy observation carriage. There’s also neither reception nor wifi – basically no modern distractions whatsoever. The food is wonderful. Head Chef Yannis Martineau is a whizz in the kitchen – think beautifully presented Grilled Snowfish Steak accompanied by Teppanyaki of Vegetables in a Vermouth and Soya Sauce. Breakfast and afternoon tea are served in your room. Lunch and dinner (a dressy affair) boast umpteen courses and take place in the dining car with its archetypal gold lamps and brass overhead racks. Drinks and canapés are served beforehand so you can get to know your fellow guests (a fascinating mix of avid travellers, anniversary couples, siblings, best friends et al). Days are filled with incredible adventures (there are several options each day). Beginning with the crossing of The Straits of Johor into Malaysia, the train snakes its way to the first stop – the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. An industrial hotspot, sprawling factories squeeze in amongst the mosques, bazaars and occasional British

beauty (the cricket ground is very English). Having climbed past massive banana trees and luscious vegetation, a cuppa awaits in the Cameron Highlands. A tapestry of tea plantations, it’s mind-blowingly scenic with strawberry farms and flower galleries lying prettily by the wayside. This beauty spot is also home to one of Malaysia’s greatest mysteries: the disappearance of ‘silk king’ Jim Thompson 50 years ago. Yes, in true voyeur fashion, you can follow in his footsteps through the jungle. The vibrant island of Penang serves as the highlight of the trip. Founded in 1786 by Englishman Captain Francis Light, its colonial capital Georgetown radiates colour with its rich blend of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures. Hair-raising trishaws speed around in their bossy way as the sweltering streets heave with people, market stalls and places of worship. Dinner is hawker food – super delicious (the fish is excellent), cheap as chips and served in an outdoor eating area as buzzy as a honeypot. As the train rattles on, the Malaysian jungle gives way to the open Thai countryside. The thatched houses on stilts remain but bright green rice paddies now emerge, peppered with strawhatted farm workers steering water buffalos through the fields. The wildlife part of the expedition has now begun. Decamp to the Monkey Training College at Surat Thani where its skillful ‘students’ are taught how to choose a ripe coconut and collect them from the trees. Or visit an elephant camp and jump on a ride with a mahout. The River Kwai is the last stop of the journey – and a very moving one. After a
awakens you from any slump of sorrow. As does your beautiful bed for the night – the Mandarin Oriental. A cocoon of comfort towering above the slums, the rooms are fresh with clean lines and boast a view which will take your breath away. The numerous restaurants are fantastic – choose Sala Rim Naam (a hop across the water) or hang out in the author’s lounge, where Somerset Maugham, Tennessee Williams, Joseph Conrad, and many other literati have held court. Bangkok’s a whirlwind but worth a few days. Head to the Grand Palace, which is so lined with gold that you are almost blinded. Or visit Jim Thompson’s house, made up of six antique Thai houses – so beautiful that you want to change your décor back home immediately. But this is also a city of contrasts: in amongst these landmarks lies the ‘forgotten people’ and the watery slums they live in – shocking and a stark reminder of the opulence the Orient Express lavishes upon you. It’s hard heading home. This is an experience you know that you’re unlikely ever to repeat. But in the everwise words of Monsieur Poirot: ‘Life is like a train, Mademoiselle. It goes on.’ tour on a local barge, the Thailand-Burma Railway Museum gives a horrific insight into the atrocities inflicted on the POWs working on the project. The Don Rak War Cemetery next door provides a raw testimony to the 6,982 soldiers who died. As The Fable of the Hills comes to a close and you draw into Bangkok, you don’t want to leave. Living on a train is actually rather nice. In a surreal way, it has started to feel like home. However, the madness of the city soon

MANDARIN ORIENTAL, BARCELONA
MANDARIN ORIENTAL, BARCELONA Right at the heart of the Passeig de Gràcia, the most expensive street in Spain, lies the gleaming Mandarin Oriental. Set within a former bank, a hop across from Gaudí’s masterpiece ‘La Pedrera’, the building boasts a beauty and serenity, rare for such a vibrant city. Designed by Spanish architect and furniture designer Patricia Urquiola, the look is contemporary chic meets cool Catalan. The 98 rooms and suites sing of elegance with white walls, stylish furniture and lashings of light. Splash out and stay in the Penthouse suite with its rooftop terrace and gobsmacking views of the city. Then flop in the spaceage style spa offering every treatment you could possibly want (ask for one of their signature therapies – bliss). It’s just the type of place where everything is so brilliantly done. Staff are super attentive – you won’t have to ask for anything once, let alone twice. The four restaurants are irresistible. Don’t miss the two-Michelin star ‘Moments’ directed by the incredibly impressive Carme Ruscalleda. Serving a modern take on Catalan cuisine, go for the exquisite tasting menu – think ‘green peas with white sausage’, ‘Mediterranean sea cucumbers with artichokes in three textures’ and ‘sea bream with pasta, ginger, vegetables and dates’ (a real highlight). Afterwards, having filled yourself to the brim, decamp to Bankers Bar. Decorated with original security boxes, the vibe’s as cool as you can get and the champagne deliciously good. Just like the hotel itself.

For further information on Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona please visit mandarinoriental.com/barcelona. L’ANDANA, TUSCANY The chic sophistication of legendary French chef Alain Ducasse extends to this secluded estate a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian coast. Once a Medici hunting lodge dating back to the 18th century, this typically Tuscan property is also subtly infused with
a Provençal sensibility, evident not just in its lavender and rosemary-filled gardens and pared-back interiors, but in a host of inventive dishes at Michelin-starred restaurant Trattoria Toscana, housed in a former granary a few yards from the main building. Expect seasonal dishes using local ingredients coupled with Gallic flair. Grilled octopus with fennel, garlic and chili, suckling pig with apple sauce and fig-fed chicken served with fried peppers are just a few of the stand-out options on the menu. At the main house, the Villa restaurant offers hearty salads, traditional pasta dishes and plenty of local, marketbought fish. There are also cooking classes to tempt the inspired, allowing guests to 77

plunder the herb-fi lled gardens and prepare a meal under the supervision of one of Alain’s chefs, before sampling the fruits of their labour later in the evening. And if all that seems like just a little too much effort, why not indulge in a massage at the luxurious spa or simply relax by the poolside before roaming the estate’s extensive gardens and impressive winery? Kirker (020 7593 1899; kirkerholidays.com) offers three nights in a superior room, including breakfast, at L’Andana (00 39 05 64 944 800; andana.it) from £899 per person based on return BA flights from London Gatwick to Pisa, plus a hire car for the duration. LE MEURICE, PARIS Renowned as a safe haven for English aristocrats, deposed monarchs and fallen heads
of state, the regal Le Meurice is Paris’s oldest palace hotel. Situated under the arches of the Rue de Rivoli and overlooking the Tuilerie Gardens, you’d be hard pushed to find a more central Parisian hotel – or a better one. Put simply, Le Meurice is Paris as you always imagined it: grand, glamorous and accompanied by 3 Michelin-starred food. It’s the hotel’s eponymous restaurant which boasts this stellar achievement. Restaurant Le Meurice’s menu couldn’t possibly be more decadent – foie gras and caviar abound – and the opulent chandelierladen dining room is inspired by the royal apartments of Versailles. Here, it’s all about the degustation menu – 8 courses of the very hautest of haute cuisine, think duck foie gras in hibiscus flower jelly, roast pigeon with wild garlic, and mimolette snow with comice pear flakes, all served on silver trays by discreetly attentive waiters who seemingly glide around the room.
Indeed, service here is key. With over 400 staff, guests are provided with every single luxury they could possibly desire, from dog walking to personal shopping. Back in the restaurant, Head Sommelier Estelle Touzet provides wine pairings for each of the degustation menu’s courses from the hotel’s impressive 30,000 strong cellar. Upstairs, the 160 rooms are mirages of pastel silks and Bourbon bergère chairs, complete with huge walk-in wardrobes. However, the pièce de résistance is the Belle Etoile Penthouse with its own private lift, butler’s pantry and panoramic views from its rooftop terrace – the perfect place to enjoy your Michelin-starred meal as you overlook the Eiffel Tower. What could possibly be more romantic? Le Meurice is part of the Dorchester Collection. Rates for a Classic Room start at €640. lemeurice.com

You may know us from walking your dog in the park, local charity events or simply recognise a familiar face; we walk the same streets and eat in the same restaurants you do. Of course, it’s also quite possible that you – or someone you know – has bought, sold or let a property through us. We’ve been around for years and our success is built on the fact that people who use us once, tend to use us again. And tell their friends. Because most of our agents live in the areas in which they work, they really understand what matters to buyers and sellers there. Many agents will claim to know more about where you live than anyone else. But we understand it’s because people know us, that time and again we sell and let properties more quickly and more profitably than anyone else.
Tanya McFeely Tanya brings a genuine charm and generous spirit to all her business dealings. But don’t be deceived – she’s a tough cookie – and that sweet exterior belies a skilled – and dare we say it – somewhat hard-nosed negotiator with a great track record for selling Brook Green’s finest properties.

ith more than 50 branches across the Capital, it was only a matter of time before we opened a branch in Brook Green. It’s leafy, village atmosphere and beautiful homes make it a highly sought after area. While we’ve sold properties in and around Brook Green for many years, we recognised that it was time to establish a dedicated branch which serves the needs of the thriving local sales market. In early April we opened the doors to a fantastic branch which is overseen by sales manager, Ben Williams, who moved from our neighbouring Hammersmith branch. In just a few weeks, we’ve already seen good levels of activity which should continue well into summer.Ben says: “Across West London, we have seen an increase of around 10% in new buyer registrations, which when combined with diminished stock levels indicate that a rise in property prices is on the cards yet again this year. Across London, demand for property is increasing with home loans becoming slightly easier to access chiefly because of the Bank of England’s Funding for Lending Scheme. As a result, we’ve seen a fall in mortgage rates with the Bank of England predicting more declines to
follow over the next few months which is great news for buyers. “The West London market remains strong and figures from the Land Registry indicate that the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham experienced the highest annual gain in 2012 with a 13.3% rise, while in and around Brook Green and West Kensington, we have seen increases as high as 15% to 18%. We are currently seeing a wide range of buyers migrating into Brook Green from other locations such as Notting Hill, Holland Park and Bayswater. They are drawn to the area because it offers superb green spaces, academically acclaimed schools, the Westfield shopping centre as well as good transport links into Central London. These buyers range from first time buyers and investors to young families or buyers looking for a pied-à-terre.”

must be the luckiest person to live in such a beautiful part of England. Who could ask for more than to start the day with a walk along the River Thames with our dogs Oscar and Charlie. No matter what the weather the river is always active with wildlife and the movement of the water is so delightful. We first moved to St. Margaret’s some 17 years ago and our timing was perfect as we secured a house on the sought after Trust Grounds. The property required extensive work and we spent the first four years working on the property to create our family home. There is such a community spirit on the Grounds and the children have grown up with many fabulous activities. Each year we are entertained by the traditional sports day, awesome fireworks evenings with spectacular displays, warm Christmas carols around the trees and tea parties for the young and old to enjoy. It’s a real community and one that has been supportive throughout the years. As a family we have embraced all there is to offer in the area. From the wide open spaces of Marble Hill Park, which abuts the River and has the most lovely gallery, to the wonderful Richmond Park, where we regularly run, cycle or walk round, enjoying the beautiful surroundings with Pen Ponds, Izabella Plantation and much more. As a company we have offices covering a wide
area of London. Our St. Margaret’s office has a village feel which is slightly different from the others. We are surrounded by the most delightful local shops, offering a variety of wares from suit makers to our brilliant local green grocery who has just about every vegetable you could want. There are many great coffee shops and despite being a village, I think the last count was eight! We are a sociable community and enjoy meeting to talk and discuss all that is happening! Twickenham Studios sits quietly just off the High Street and there are many famous people who live in the area who are left alone to enjoy our lovely surroundings. Even when Angelina Jolie popped into our green grocers no one seemed to bat an eyelid, despite the paparazzi following her! If all this was not enough we have the benefit of living but a short journey by train, underground or car to allow us access to Central London, where of course there is a positive plethora of activity and the best of everything one could wish for - we regularly visit the museums, theatres, jazz clubs and restaurants, but whatever is available in London, you cannot beat the pleasure of walking along St. Margaret’s High Street and talking to the many friendly people who live in this very special village. 0208 892 8921; fitzgibbon.co.uk

Susan Fitz-Gibbon, Director of Fitz-Gibbon, 020 8892 8921. Th is is an interesting one as I love interior design and do it as a hobby. I really enjoy mix and matching from traditional shops such as India Jane in Richmond and Jenny Blanc in Teddington. Both of which have the most amazing selection of furnishings.
Philip Wooller, Director of Philip Wooller, 020 8811 2929. In the early 1800’s the large gardens of Ashchurch Grove were covered with fruit trees. Th is provided fresh produce that could be transported rapidly into the capital. Hence ‘The Orchard’ pub on the corner of Ashchurch Grove.
Jason Godfray, Branch Manager of Barnard Marcus, 020 8995 2345. Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Union Jacks, offers some light relief to the diners of Chiswick. KIDS
Joseph Murphy, Sales Director of Orchards, 020 8995 9797. William Hogarth bought Hogarth House at the age of 52 when he was already a famous and established artist. He was regarded as being somewhat unruly in his way of thinking due the changes he wanted to make about the style of art practiced at that time. He considered this to be his place of peace on the Thames.
Matt Thompson, Associate Director of Featherstone Leigh, 020 8994 6567. With its abundance of beauty salons, hairstylists, nail bars and boutiques, life in Chiswick must be exhausting for my wife Rachel. As a chap, I feel a little hard done by with just two menswear shops on the High Road. This said, I can usually find what im looking for at both L.A and American Pie.
Gary Sinton, Director of Sinton Andrews, 020 8566 1990 . There is nowhere better to get some air into the kids lungs than a visit to Brent Lodge Park, known locally as Bunny Park. There is a lovely park and also an animal centre where they get a hands on experience with a wide variety of small and medium sized animals. A fun day out for the whole family to enjoy.

HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL LETTINGS TEAM SLEEP ROUGH FOR CHARITY
A group of nine Lettings Managers and Directors from the Hamptons International’s South West London Lettings region slept rough in a cold empty Earlsfield warehouse. On 26th April the team took part in The Big Sleep Out raising money for The Big Issue Foundation. The highlight was a panel discussion with vendors who explained how the Big Issue’s philosophy of “A hand up not a hand-out” has helped them get their lives back on track. Rosanna Caldwell, Regional Lettings Director said: “Of course it doesn’t compare to what 1000’s of people in London experience every night but it gave us a taste of what that life is like and enabled us to show our support, channel awareness and raise over £1350 for Big Issue vendors.” Hamptons International www.justgiving.com/teams/ HamptonsInternational-BigSleepOut
PROPERTY FOCUS Stephen Hardy, Sales Manager at Sworn & Co
Most satisfying transaction I’ve had... It’s hard to pick just one, but it’s always satisfying when we are able to provide a smooth service for the sale of a property. We have just done this in Netheravon Road for probate purposes. Most interesting property I’ve been involved with... One winter evening I had a lady actually run out of a house in Barrowgate Road because it had a bad ‘feeling’. A little investigation turned up a dark, dark history from the early 1900’s. The property I’d most like on the books is... I should have an outstanding opportunity for someone to buy a wonderful property near Chiswick House. It will need a lot of work, possibly demolition, but it will be on the market this summer. 020 8995 3076; swornandco.com

THE MOST FABULOUS COCKTAIL IS...
STYLISH BOUTIQUE...
Grove Park Deli is a well known haunt for locals, Janice and her team make a steak sandwich that should win awards!
A LOST HOUR...
For those fortunate enough to have the luxury of an hour, I would say the High Road Brasserie is the place to be. Here you can read your book or paper in peace and enjoy people watching yet you are still in the midst of everything.
FAVOURITE RESTAURANT... MOST FABULOUS PROPERTY...
A truly exquisite five bedroom double fronted family home presented to the market in fabulous condition throughout located in a desirable residential address. This property benefits from stylish interiors, off street parking and fantastic entertaining space. Chesterfield Road, W4, £2,750,000.
One needs to experience Annie’s to understand why it is the place to go. It is an institution of good food, good wine, fabulous cocktails and evenings to remember.
Marmalade is no ordinary boutique, it’s a haven for all your jewelry requirements. If you have a special occasion in mind i.e. a wedding, an engagement you are planning or even just to spoil yourself this the place to go.
BEST KEPT SECRET...
For this occasion you need a friend or two and you need a whole afternoon to indulge your senses. Sam’s Brasserie is the place to go and the cocktail of the hour would definitely have to be the Butterscotch Martini.

MARKET ROUND-UP Paul Price, Associate Director and Sales Manager, Marsh & Parsons, Brook Green
Competition amongst buyers is highest in the £1.5m to £2m price bracket, where buyers can get a 2,000 sqft Victorian family house for less than £2m – a rarity so close to central London. As a result, we are achieving record prices for these premium properties and the price per square foot is being pushed above £1,000 in many cases. Indeed, we have just recently sold a three-bedroom house on Milson Road for £1,044 per square foot to a buyer originally registered with our Notting Hill office. Despite the local price increases, they saw Brook Green as offering comparatively great value. So far this year, almost 30% of our sales have been to buyers registered with our Notting Hill, Holland Park, Fulham and
Stuart Balfré, Sales Manager, Bushells ,Chiswick
North Kensington offices. Compared to other areas of London, Brook Green hasn’t had the same level of interest from foreign investors. However, the area is starting to attract an increasing number of foreign nationals, who have perhaps spent the last year or two renting in nearby areas of London and decided to settle in Brook Green, where the transport links into central London offer a great, more affordable alternative. After 36 viewings for a property on St Dunstans Road, it was an Italian cashbuyer who had been renting locally who snapped up the house for the fullasking price.
Chiswick remains one of the top destinations in West London. It is highly sought after and potential residents don’t have the luxury of time in finding their dream home with heavy competition for limited available properties. There is little indication that demand for this area is slowing, multiple offers for the same property and above asking price offers remain a common occurrence. This not only benefits Chiswick itself but bordering areas are also seeing value increases. A desirable location is still Poets Corner in Acton, just north of Chiswick. There are lots of families and the properties are a good investment.

CHART 1 & 2 • Unlike most areas of D&G (S/W) land* during 2008–2012, lack of credit/ mortgage finance has not impacted on capital values. • Capital values have risen across all unit sizes, as housing equity/capital has been re-deployed from other areas. • Family houses have risen much faster than flats (in Hammersmith it is the school catchment areas that have particularly outperformed). • In both areas 2 bedroom flats have risen faster in value than 1 bedroom flats (1 bedroom flats in Fulham have underperformed versus Hammersmith).

sports
“My children have been fortunate enough to have grown up with the Park Club, a home away from home, where they enjoy their sports and fun activities in a friendly family run club. The 27 acres outside give the children the freedom to play in a safe environment. The Park Club for me is like having my own country club in Acton!” Gina Haran - Family Couple Member
