I

remember the first time I watched the film Withnail & I. I was at university and my housemate – a passionate film student – demanded that I watch it with her. She couldn’t believe that at 18 I hadn’t seen what, to her mind, was one of the best dark comedies of all time. I remember being fascinated by the squalid 1960s bohemia that the characters, Withnail and Marwood, existed in. Existed being the operative word, as their lives as struggling actors – built on a foundation of substance abuse, alcoholism and a distinct lack of personal hygine – were anything but charmed. Perhaps as a boozy student, anxious about the future, I found some kind of solace in the film. Or perhaps I just enjoyed the sordidly funny script. The film fast became one of my favourites, so when the opportunity arose to interview Grant last month, the despondent drunk Withnail, I jumped at it. Head to page 16 to read my conversation with the

ith a striking palette and bold intentions, Ryan Hewett’s distorted, highly modern portraiture is as much about the viewer as it is about the subject. The modern world is rife with judgement. In our technological society, images and ideas face fierce commentary and analysis from the instant they appear. The social media revolution has spawned a culture of consequence free judgement, and nowhere is this focused more than

on the power-players of modern society. It is against this backdrop of preconceptions and prejudice that Hewett has created his challenging exhibition ‘Untitled’. Hewett’s work focuses on the dissemination of expectation. His images begin as portraits of figures loaded with political and historical significance and are then undone, the likeness diminished and distorted with bold hues and powerful brushstrokes. Eventually, the icon vanishes, leaving behind a raw image on which the viewer must make

15 B&C_May15_WANDSWORTH FRINGE.indd 15

their own judgements. Hewett’s abstract interpretations obfuscate the emotive power of visual icons and aims to force considered opinions. He comments that, “we should be standing back, and giving more thought to the effects, good and bad, that these figures have had, and are having on us as individuals and societies.” In representing figures such as Barack Obama, Martin Luther King and even Adolf Hitler in a radically deconstructed manner, flash judgements and preconceptions become apparent. Thus, Hewett’s exhibition forces a conscious reflection on our beliefs and how they are constructed. The power of the image is simultaneously reinforced and undermined, and Hewett crafts an exhibition of contrasts, experimenting with ideas of judgement and reinvigorating the art of portraiture. This reconsideration of the image, separated from associations of iconicity and status, chimes with the innovative motivations of The Unit London, where the exhibition will be based. Jonny Burt and Joe Kennedy have sought to distance their gallery from the typically reputation led industry and as such display some of the most exciting emerging artists. u 9 Earlham Street, WC2H; theunitldn.com

GRANT & I Following the launch of his second fragrance, Covent Garden, we speak to Richmond local Richard E. Grant about scent and the Spice Girls. I n t e r v i e w r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e

I

met Richard E. Grant on a sunny day in April at The Corner Restaurant and Champagne bar in Selfridges. One of Britain's most eminent acting talents, loved as much for his slurring turn in Withnail & I as for his humourless first footman in Gosford Park, I found myself a little intimidated. But when I arrived at the event, Grant got up and meandered over to introduce himself. “Hello, I’m Richard. You must be Romy,” he took my hand and shook it firmly, before making a joke - one I can’t remember because of a mild case of being struck by stardom - and warning me, with a wry smile, to eat all of my breakfast because he had forked out for it himself. Immaculately dressed in a slim cut navy blazer and with a leonine head of perfectly coiffed hair, Grant is every bit the veteran British thespian - but his self-effacing demeanor, raucous sense of humour and effortless British charm put me instantly at ease. Grant’s formidable acting career hasn’t slowed with age (he recently turned 58).

[WITHNAIL & I]

deals with failure and that is SOMETHING MORE PEOPLE might be Able to EMPATHISE with than success. His recent cameo in acclaimed American television series Girls is evidence of Grant’s ability to remain relevant. Lena Dunham, the writer, director and star of the series, wrote Grant into the role of Jasper - an onand-off-the-wagon cocaine addict indulging in an affair with a girl half his age. As a confessed fan of Withnail & I, it’s easy to see where Dunham’s inspiration for the character came from. There’s a mutual admiration between the two, palpable in the way Grant speaks about her. “[She] write[s] with such extraordinary insight and honesty,” he continues, describing her as an “uber multi-hyphenate phenomenon”.

Any good actor has a couple of stinkers on their resumé, and Grant is not exempt. 2014's Dom Hemmingway is definitely up there, and let's not forget Spice Girls: The Movie. But in general, Grant’s managed to avoid any major flops. From his recent role as Lord Michael Heseltine in 2011 The Iron Lady, to the voice of Percy in Disney’s Pocahontas, Grant’s repertoire is extensive to say the least - he starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s acclaimed Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992, The Age of Innocence in 1993, the aforementioned Gosford Park in 2001 and Bright Young Things in 2003. More recently, Grant played Simon Bricker, an art historian, in Downton Abbey and is currently filming forthcoming ITV drama Jekyll and Hyde. Even with a plethora of box office hits in the bag, the one film most people associate with Grant is Bruce Robinson’s 1987 cult classic, Withnail & I, in which Grant plays an alcoholic Nihlist with a penchant for drinking lighter fluid. Grant attributes the film’s flyaway success to the fact that it “deals with failure and that is something more people might be able to empathise with than success.”

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW

He continues, “[Withnail & I] has no plot nor any of the things every other successful movie relies on. The script is also scabrously witty and infused with profound loss and nostalgia. In other words, it’s truly romantic. “It opened every career door for me. In the three decades since it was made, it still gets quoted at me by total strangers on a daily basis.” With such success so early on his career, has anything else lived up to it? “Writing and directing my autobiographical film WAH-WAH was a real highlight too, as I was able to re-visit my incredibly dysfunctional family life from the safety of middle age.” Born of English, Dutch and German ancestry, Grant’s upbringing was a colourful one. His father, Henrik Esterhuysen, was head of education for the British government administration in the former British Protectorate of Swaziland. When he was ten, Grant witnessed his mother sleeping with his father’s best friend in the back of his car - a cataclysmic event which led to the subsequent divorce of his parents. Writing and producing the film WAHWAH in 2005 - an autobiographical take on this traumatic period of his life was, for Grant, “very intense and cathartic, while directing it was entirely liberating as we filmed in most of the locations where the key events in the story took place.” Surprisingly, Grant's mother gave the film her blessing, something he describes as “both generous and much appreciated.” A former sufferer of depression, Grant now speaks openly about mental health and attributes his recovery to 18-months of rigorous psychoanalysis, claiming that it saved his life. He also believes that acting has helped him to cope with painful memories from his past. “Acting is a great way of dealing with and confronting difficult issues, as you are always examining behavior and what motivates people to do the things they do.” With this in mind, I ask, is there anything he’d like to tell his younger self? “Rest easy. You will live beyond 52” – the age his father died – “You will fall in love. You will have a child. You will live in London. And you will go to Hollywood.”

Ever since NEIL ARMSTRONG set foot on the MOON IN 1969, when I was 12 YEARS old, have I wanted to go into OUTER SPACE.

Though Grant’s father wanted him to become a barrister, “I was so talkative and argumentative, but law was never a serious consideration,” the actor originally wanted to tread the surface of the moon rather than the boards. “Ever since Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon in 1969, when I was 12 years old, have I wanted to go into outer space.”

19 CHIS_June15_E_Grant.indd 19

He may not have made it outside of the O-Zone just yet, but Grant has recently branched into a surprising new industry. Last year he launched his first fragrance, Jack. Far from the Beyonces and Britneys of the fragrance world, Grant saw Jack as an opportunity to explore his obsession with scent. “I have been led by my nose all my life and compulsively sniffed everything in sight,” he admits. As a boy, his concerned parents asked why he felt the need to smell everything, to which he responded: “All animals smell everything, why not us?” At the age of 12 Grant, taken with a local girl, decided to create a perfume for her by boiling gardenia and rose petals in sugar water, sealing them in jars and burying them in the garden. It didn’t work, but ignited a genuine interest in the art of fragrance making. Forty years later and, with the encouragement of his close friend fashion designer Anya Hindmarch, Grant took the plunge. Sleeved in a Union Jack-adorned canvas bag, the fragrance contains notes of lime, marijuana and mandarin, with heart notes of nutmeg and clove, and base notes of vetiver and musk. Grant attributes the inclusion of cannabis to his upbringing in Swaziland, a place also known as The Gold Mine of Marijuana. Grant's latest newest scent, Covent Garden, is available to buy this month. Imbued with notes of rose, orange and carrot, the fragrance is inspired by Covent Garden Market as featured in My Fair Lady - a healthy nod to his theatrical roots. Despite travelling the world with work, Grant is a determined Londoner. Residing in the leafy London suburb of Richmond, he doesn’t sound as though he’ll be moving anytime soon. “It’s halfway between Piccadilly Circus and Heathrow Airport. It’s got the Thames running through it and Richmond Park has 2,000 acres to get lost in,” he beams. “I love London for the variety of theatre, music, museums, galleries and history. They’re unbeatable. And, if a city could be deemed to have a sense of humour, London most definitely has that.” u

ARTS & CULTURE / SPOTLIGHT

AN INSTITUTION Over a century old and still leading the way - the Lyric Hammersmith makes us proud to live West. Wo r d s e l i z a b e t h h u t t o n

L

ondoners love the Lyric Hammersmith. Why? Because the 120 year old theatre harbours a rich sense of community, a rarity in the big bad city. Alongside producing high quality contemporary performances, the Lyric also welcomes London's creatives to come and learn, work and enjoy the centre. Committed to nurturing and celebrating talent and passion in the arts, the centre invests heavily in the young so that we can all reap the rewards. Most recently, a cool 20 million pounds has been fundraised and invested into renovating the building, resulting in the creation of the new Reuben Foundation Wing. While this might not be the first time the Lyric has had great structural change – let’s not forget that in 1966 the entire theatre

was saved from demolition, deconstructed from its site on Bradmore Grove and remade on Lyric Square – it is undoubtedly the most significant cultural development to take place in West London in decades. Wandering around the new wing, which took eight years to fundraise for and another two to build, the first that strikes me is the sheer magnitude of this project. With a new rehearsal space, music practice rooms, dance studio, recording studio, film and TV studio, editing suite, 50 seat cinema, digital play space and a sensory room for children with disabilities, as well as new props and costumes, this is a massive deal. With no expense spared it’s surprising that young people are encouraged to come in and “mess around and create” but as the director of young people and emerging talents, Nicholai La Barrie explained,

This is a creative FINISHING SCHOOL

“resident professionals will look after and teach the kids, so there is a sense of trust and respect between the young and old.” “If the professional is making a TV programme, then you’re a member of their crew. They need you as much as you need them and for that reason this is the only building with such great facilities who are willing to have young people come and work.” You can be trained to become the creators and theatre-makers of the future while also contributing to the work of today. “That’s what the Lyric is about, it’s a collaboration between the new and the established. But we also want to be accessible for all, not exclusive. As the artistic director Sean Holmes says, “this is a creative finishing school for those who can’t go to drama and music academies but still have the desire to learn and create.” With a recording studio that is, I am told, on the same level as Abbey Road available to rent for £25 and a music room large enough to fit an entire orchestra for the same amount, the prices are pretty fair. “The accessibility of this will result in a great new generation of artists, producers and musicians. In the next 5 years it’s my goal to have everyone talking about the Lyric, from the West End to Edinburgh. You see, no one else is doing this.” Over the hundred year history of the theatre, the Lyric has welcomed some of the world’s finest writers, directors, actors and theatre companies to its stages, and now it welcomes you. u Lyric Hammersmith membership costs £10 and lasts until the age of 25. f you missed out on courtside tickets this year, don't panic; Wimbledon need not become yet another unattainably expensive sporting event you’re forced to live stream on your laptop. Or worse: watch on a “vintage” television set. No, you can do much better than that. This is precisely why we have sourced five of the best locations at which you to can watch all the Wimbledon 2015 action unfold. Massive outdoor screens, heckling Murray fans and an electric atmosphere are all compulsory components, so we recommend that you pack up a jug of Pimms and head straight to one of these screening hotspots in London. Let the nail-biting begin. 1 . H e n m a n H i ll / M u r r ay M o u n d s it called Henman Hill or Murray Mound? There is regular I dispute as to whether this patch of grass is the namesake of the retired tennis pro Tim Henman, or the UK’s current tennis treasure Andy Murray,

making this landmark a point of comic contention. However, this iconic sprawling green is actually called Aorangi Terrace and is located on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The giant screen is to the side of Wimbledon Court No 1: meaning that you really are in the midst of the tournament. Expect picnic rugs galore and steadfast Wimbledon groupies. But make sure you’re ready for your TV close-up, because this location gets ample media coverage in between matches. u  Aorangi Terrace SW19; wimbledon.com 2 . Ly r i c H a m m e r s m ith nce again the Lyric Hammersmith will be providing O an outdoor hub for die-hard Wimbledon tennis fans. Throughout the tournament, the arts venue’s Lyric Square screen will project the matches from 12-8pm daily. But the target audience is not who you’d think: instead of meandering sightseers, these screening cater to those stuck at their office desks. So bosses be warned; we predict

employees to be taking particularly long lunch breaks for the fortnight beginning 29 June. Nevertheless the post-work crowds will set the Square alive, and picnic baskets will make for wonderful viewing companions while you kick back on the deck chairs provided. But if you need a break from the tennis, the Lyric Hammersmith also offers onlookers a reprieve: Royal Opera House’s production of Don Giovanni will be live streamed on 3 July. Finally, de-stress with Yoga in the Square on 1 and 8 July, and enter the all-important state of Zen pre finals. u King Street, W6; lyric.co.uk

3 . Ca r d i n a l P l ac e his Victoria based venue will be awash with shoppers and T Wimbledon supporters alike. But do not worry for there will be plenty of projectors to catch the tennis on. As well as one big screen, there will be several smaller screens fitted into retro caravans that will be dotted about the location. Also on the 2nd of July there will be a Great British Bake off live event. So you can eat cake to the backdrop of Wimbledon tennis. The event coordinators are keeping hushed about retail partnerships; but last year Zizzi’s delivered directly to your deck chair. With a myriad of delicious restaurants close by- we can only assume this year will be even better. And the icing on the cake? Cardinal Place will be host to a one-off Great British Summer Bake Off, providing those with a sweet tooth with delicious treats to enjoy in front of the big screen. u Cardinal Place 76-98 Victoria Street, SW1E; greatbritsummer.com

Th e O r a n g e Tr e e his Richmond based local pub / F hotel hybrid is a classic place to catch the tennis. The Orange Tree is based right by Richmond Park, so you can stroll along the greenery before heading indoors to drink in the match. At the Orange Tree, there will be a horde of locals and the manager closes the blinds so that you really can get stuck in. They will obviously be serving Pimm’s and have famed snack menu which may include some Wimbledon appropriate nibbles. And if not, we suggest trying the baked camembert with cauliflower fritters and pickle or the crispy squid with lime and coriander. They're both scrumptious. u The Orange Tree, 45 Kew Road, TW9; orangetreerichmond.co.uk

4 . Th e E ag le or a local screening of England’s F most famed sports tournament, head to the The Eagle near Ravenscourt Park tube. This gem is famous for its majestic garden, where there are many nooks and crannies in which to nestle, and colourful outdoor beanbags on which to sprawl. But most importantly, there is a huge outdoor screen that will be projecting the live action of Wimbledon as you sit back, relax, and sample the pub’s scrumptious summer treats. For last year’s

V JEWELLERY Wo r d s s t e p h a n i e k i n g ttention fashion magpies: this is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill. SS15 is coming, and you need to be prepared. So heed our Public Service Announcement and arm yourself with summer’s hottest accessory label: two-time UK Watch & Jewellery Awards nominee, V Jewellery. No, literally; arm yourself with the covetable creations by this month's ‘Brand To Watch’. Whether it’s the fan favourite Simplicity Spine or Deco Chrysler rings, or the limited edition Astoria bracelet set in cubic zirconias, green adventurine and black agate, it is critical that you decorate your limbs with one of Laura Vann's lust-worthy pieces. Why? Because even though she only celebrated V Jewellery’s second anniversary in April, the West Midlands-based designer has already cemented her label on fashion’s most wanted list. Not bad for a Central Saint Martins Graduate who started a company at 22. Vann's impossibly cool pieces are often seen adorning the extremities of celebrities, It girls and bloggers, from Katy Perry to Millie Mackintosh. V Jewellery's timeless aesthetic withstands the rapidly changing fashion seasons. But surely accessories that expertly balance decadence with minimalism have an exorbitant price tag to match? Not the case; V Jewellery's Sterling Silver and semi-precious stone items start at the incredibly affordable £60. Achievable and aspirational? V Jewellery is the answer to every woman's prayers.u

METAMORPHIC TOUCH

Valerina Brookes and her transformative technique Wo r d s S T E P H A N I E K I N G

’ll admit it: I do not believe in alternative medicine. Growing up as the daughter of two doctors, holistic treatments as form of therapy have never come close to rivalling their Western counterparts. Well, in my mind anyway. But with my pro-medication mentality and a heavy prescription of skepticism, off I went to test out Valerina Brookes’ metamorphic technique. Immmediately it was apparent that Brookes, with her two decades’ worth of experience, was a highly trained health professional. Yet were her light, sweeping movements to the spinal reflex points on my hands and de-socked feet going to do anything? (These circular finger motions being the very same developed by Gaston Saint-Pierre in the late 1970s.) Turns out the joke was on me. Because the full-body tingling sensations and ultimately uplifting effects I experienced had me leaving the hour-long session feeling noticeably lighter. My science-inclined self was puzzled: This could not be a placebo, because I did not believe it could work. Still, somehow Brookes’ technique had elicited a fairly strong, positive reaction in me. Brookes advised that “each client is different,” yet the shared aim for their treatment outcome is to encourage “the release of patterns that no longer serve [them].” I wasn't sure to what I should attribute the shift in energy within myself: whether it was simply Brookes' motherly, nuturing touch, or her transformative metamorphic technique. Honestly? I didn't care. Thanks to Brookes the renewed inner calm I had was wonderful. u

‘I WILL NEVER BUY SHOES ANYWHERE ELSE AGAIN’ Recruitment manager Andrea Mahn had so much foot pain she could barely walk.

T

his fit and active 40-yearold had been suffering from Plantar Fasciitis – a painful inflammation of the tissue on the sole of the foot. “I was treated by an osteopath, a physiotherapist and a sports therapist but nothing really eased the pain,” explained Andrea. As her job involves a lot of standing and walking, life was becoming unbearable. She was also unable to partake in her favourite hobby, running. Then Andrea saw an advert for Foot Solutions and decided to pay them a visit.

“I turned up hoping that someone would be able to help me,” she said, “and it was the best decision I have ever made. “The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and attentive and after half an hour of tests and examinations they found a solution. It was the most fantastic service I could have imagined.” Foot Solutions provided Andrea with custom shoe inserts and a special device to help stretch her feet at night. “The device gave me immediate relief from the pain, allowing me to sleep better and when the inserts were fitted in my shoes they made a huge difference. I had faced the prospect of never being able to wear high heels – but I can now wear them for up to 14 hours if necessary. “I don’t suffer at all anymore. I can do my job and go running without constant pain. I will never buy shoes anywhere else again.” ◆

The polo season is upon us, so our editor tries it for herself gives it a go Wo r d s R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

iding a horse is, despite what they say, not like riding a bike. Not taking to the saddle for, let’s say, ten years, does mean you forget some of the key skills of riding, for example: actually getting on a horse. When I was thrown back into the saddle last month, I momentarily forgot how to mount the damn thing and tried to drag myself up, ungracefully and unsuccessfully, head first onto it. I was given the chance to ride but while learning how to play the arduous sport of polo. In preparation for Ham Polo Club and Chesterton’s Polo in the Park event, I was invited to learn how to play the game under the watchful eye of the UK’s leading polo player Malcolm Borwick, who can also count himself a Royal Salute World Polo Ambassador. His unyielding approach to teaching payed off, as he took me from amateur – “I’ll take Romy, she’s never ridden before” (I had) – to Best Player of the day (I have the award to prove it). The day began with a brief history of the game, covering everything from chukkas to champagne, before we took to the field and branded our mallets. We learnt how to hit the ball in all directions with the mini mallet, before jumping on a wooden horse with the full sized stick. It wasn’t long until we were marched over to the layperson’s field and hopped onto the horses. Mine, a cool horse called Castore, was docile and responsive. By the end of the day, I was trotting around, wacking balls into the goal with ease. Learning to play polo isn’t something the club offers throughout the year, rather it’s an annual treat that keen polo watchers, riders or just curious beginners can take to before the clubs big event. What fun. ◆

Pasta with broad beans, tomatoes and feta

here is one particular grape variety that works so well with the fresh green flavour of broad beans, the tang of tomatoes and the chalky texture of feta, how can I recommend anything else? It’s Sauvignon Blanc. No matter where it’s grown it holds its identity well, making it a safe bet if you want zingy, freshly-cut herb flavours. Chile is still a very underrated country for this grape, so try this one, which is summer in a bottle. Carmen Wave Series Sauvignon Blanc 2014, £9.99; wMajestic.co.uk  T

Grilled mackerel with new potatoes

f this isn’t the kind of dish to eat out in the garden (now that’s it’s finally warm enough again) then I don’t know what is! Mackerel is so tasty by itself it doesn’t need to be dressed up too much, but as an oily fish, it’s useful to have super-fresh wine to cut through that richness. A wine which is bursting with cranberry freshness would be perfect, like the MIP Rosé 2014, £11.95; leaandsandeman.co.uk  I

Strawberries

he summery flavour of strawberries can be enhanced with many wines and a pink Champagne would be a delicious but decadent choice. If you don’t want to spend too much, there’s another hugely moreish Italian wine called Moscato d’Asti that’s a winner with strawberries and is usually more affordable too. It’s a slightly sweet and fizzy, low in alcohol and tastes of grapes and elderflowers, this one is seriously delicious. Einaudi Moscato d’Asti 2013, £13.50; ocado.com  T

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW and goat tacos. The oyster was still soft, but the batter could have been a tad thinner. Overall, the flavours were good, particularly the addition of smoked bone marrow, which brought an earthiness to an otherwise quite saline dish. The Somerset goat tacos were served with a generous squeeze of lime and were moorish. We decided to really test the skills of Smokehouse and ordered a vegetarian dish. The burnt leeks came topped with raw Portobello mushrooms and a fried egg, and was finished with a sprinkling of truffle and parmesan. Overall it was tasty, but the promise of burnt leeks,

The ‘BURNT LEEKS’ came out GREEN. Those badboys should have been BLACK

his is the second Smokehouse from Neil Rankin – the first opened in Islington in 2013 when man-food was having a real moment and every new restaurant was chop this, meat that. We went, quite literally, meat mad. But while this madness has subsided – a little – Rankin decided to open another restaurant, and that’s because Smokehouse is different. The restaurant, to begin with, is not quite what it says on the tin. It’s not a dark room where cleaved hunks of charred meat dangle. Nor is it a back to basics, meat-mad restaurant for the ‘boys’. Yes, there is a focus on quality meat, but there is something much more refined about the dishes than many of its

competitor restaurants. It must be down to his many years working as a fine dining chef at establishments such as The Latymer at Pennyhill Park, Rhodes 24 and Chez Bruce. He also earned accolades at Barbecoa, which is where his love for barbecued food began, before going on to pursue this interest as head chef at Pitt Cue in Soho – one of the best barbecue restaurants in London. He has clearly found his niche: well-considered seasonal British fare, with a barbecued but delicate finish, which only highlights his skills at combining traditional cooking and modern aesthetics. My dining companion and I tucked into some food. We started our feast with the deep fried rock oyster served on beef dripping toast with smoked bone marrow

55 Chiswick_June15_Review.indd 55

only to receive green ones, was nothing short of a disappointment. If Faye Maschler was right about Smokehouse being the place to “show us why man discovered fire” then really those badboys should have been black. You win some, you lose some. Mains up next; we shared the shortrib bourguignon and “The Sphere” – a dish of smoked ham hock, pigs cheeks and squid romesco – both were absolutely divine. The shortrib was rich, succulent and came served with creamy mash, while “The Sphere” was full of flavour and texture. To finish, we shared smoked rhubarb with cream cheese and almond praline, something that on paper could be construed as my idea of hell, but instead was a perfectly balanced spring time dessert. Rankin, I may have said it before about other restaurants, but now I actually mean it: this is the kind of local that would make me consider moving. Bravo. u

he mustangs are on the move. Thundering across the Nevadan plains – hooves pounding, flared nostrils snorting, a whirling dust cloud in their wake – these wild horses are running for their lives. Like bestial Bonnie and Clydes, they’re on the run from the government, who in 2008 announced that 30,000 of these horses were to be slaughtered or sold in a bid to control numbers, destined for cruelly crowded corrals at best or the European meatmarket at worst. As a result, one of the most iconic symbols of the Wild West is slowly disappearing, and with it a piece of authentic American history. But there is one place where these horses have found refuge. Created by billionaire animal rights campaigner Madeleine Pickens, Mustang Monument is a luxurious not-for-profit eco-resort situated in the high desert of Nevada. Here you’ll find 1000 of these wild horses, rescued and roaming free on 600,000 acres of rolling desert plains. Believing that the answer to their plight is tourism, Pickens is spreading their story through the visitors who come to stay here and experience the mustangs’ own unique

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

THIS PLACE is far more THAN JUST YOUR average dude RANCH brand of magic. Yet the resort has faced opposition, with local cattle ranchers contesting the benefits of Picken’s altruism. Seen as an agricultural pest, they argue that the horses threaten their livelihoods and without a natural predator, numbers will become unsustainable. Sabotage attempts have

been made, from wire fences cut to allow unsolicited trespassing on neighbouring lands, to stallions being planted in castrated herds to breech breeding regulations. Local men who work here have even been disowned by their families, such is the intensity of emotion that the ranch provokes. Despite this, Mustang Monument has proved a huge success, and it’s easy to see why. This place is far more than just your average dude ranch – accommodation here takes the form of either luxurious, handpainted teepees or decadently designed cottages. Illustrating the true meaning of glamping, teepees come kitted out in Navajo rugs, huge beds and bundles of cosy faux-fur throws. Pick the teepee painted with running horses and you’ll get to watch the mustangs in flight once again as the sun goes down and the crickets begin to sing. Meanwhile, for those who prefer their creature comforts, the sumptuous safari cottages are decked out in Ralph Lauren interiors and beautiful bathrooms with a tub big enough for two. Days are spent in the saddle, out on horse safaris in search of the herd or hacking over Spruce Mountain to picnic up on the hilltops overlooking the Goshute

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST IT’S eerily quiet as YOU RIDE, WITH nothing BUT THE UNTAMED wilderness AROUND YOU Valley. These rides along take you along the dirt tracks of the desert scrubland, past deserted pioneer villages and into the shadows of the pinyon pines as the smell of wild sage floats on the breeze. It’s eerily quiet as you ride, with nothing but the untamed wilderness around you. Atop the mountain, views across the valley stretch as far as the eye can see into the piercing blue horizon – there’s not another living soul in sight. Apart from the Mustang Monument team of course, who cruise up in 4x4s to spread out the blankets, plump up the pillows and prepare an alfresco feast for lunch. Here, luxury is never far away. But you don’t have to be an equestrian enthusiast to enjoy all that Mustang Monument has to offer. Resident cowboy Clay Nannini is on hand to teach you how to lasso and take you out on the old, open wagon before breakfast to feed the herd. Rattling down the track behind the two giant draft horses, Pat and Duke, these trips make you feel like you’re starring in an episode of Little House on the Prairie. It’s worth the early start though – lured in by the food, the mustangs come tantalizingly close, allowing you to get as near as humanely possible to these wild animals. It’s easy to waste hours watching them. But for those looking for some more high-octane activities, there’s also rock-

climbing, shooting and off-road buggy rides on offer. You can fire anything from small pistols to large assault rifles on the ranch’s range, where the targets take the shape of various villains – zombies and bandits who each squirt fake blood when you make a hit. Ex-SEAL Monty Heath runs the adrenaline-fuelled rides in the Maverick, an off-road buggy complete with roll cage. Even with seatbelts and crash helmets, it’s still a hair-raising ride as you whizz around the dirt tracks at 70mph, dust flying in your trail as you narrowly avoid rolling. After a long day out on the plains, things taker a slower pace back on the ranch where guests return to a homecooked meal served communal style in one of the dedicated dining teepees. Food is wholesome and hearty – think pumpkin

soups, roast chicken, corn on the cob and cherry crumble to finish. After dinner, roll on over to the saloon bar, take a seat on one of the saddle-turned-stools and enjoy the country tunes crooning over the stereo as the bourbon flows. As the night rolls on and your teepee beckons, take a moment to reflect in one of the wooden armchairs under the twinkling night sky. Out of the silence of the cool desert air comes a distant rumbling rolls as the hooves once again begin to pound across the plain. It’ll be while yet before the mustangs stop running. u Steppes Travel (steppestravel.co.uk / 0843 778 9926) offers a seven day itinerary with four nights at Mustang Monument in Nevada (mustangmonument.com) and three nights at the Sundance Resort in Utah from £2,725 per person based on two people sharing, including economy flights to Salt Lake City, car hire, full board accommodation and all activities at Mustang Monument, and room only accommodation at Sundance.

ROSES ew plants represent summer as well as the good old fashioned rose. It takes true skill to breed, feed and prune the perfect rose but the result is well worth it. Thankfully, specialist growers have been breeding more disease resistant, longer flowering varieties, so that your hard work will be rewarded with wonderful scent and colour from June into the late summer. kategouldgardens.com

ith summer holidays, sunshine and beaches just W around the corner, combining language lessons with water sports and cultural trips is an excellent way to boost your child’s skills, over the long break. At a recent Chatham House event, the place of English as a global language was discussed. Key points that resonated were that yes, English drives influence, but to act locally languages are essential. Europeans with languages are taking the jobs of Brits, who increasingly find that they can’t compete with their continental peers; and as competition for places heightens, leading MBA graduate schemes are viewing languages as a requirement. The learning and speaking of languages helps to make us recognise that the world is a multi-faceted place, with cultural and linguistic subtleties driving both family and business life. Aside from all of these formalities, languages make life richer, more vibrant; introducing them to your child early on will ensure that they can reap the benefits later on. 

few months ago, John Cridland, the Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) Director General, criticised the quality of science teaching in our primary schools: “Science education in primary schools is being squeezed out, with over half of teachers believing it has become less of a priority with too many schools struggling to teach the recommended two hours every week.” His remarks followed research carried out by Brunel University and the CBI, which also found a third of teachers lack confidence when teaching the subject. “How can we expect to inspire future generations of scientists and engineers if we don’t deliver high-quality and inspiring science lessons at primary school age?” asks Cridland. A new education company, Richer Education, has set up a Science Saturday School to tackle the problem. Conducted in partnership with Imperial College, London, the classes “aim to inspire and motivate children aged 5-11”, says cofounder Rafael Hernandez. “We want to get them while they are young,” he explains. “Science education in secondary schools is not engaging students, so we want to get students to really love it at primary so that they go on to study it successfully.” Hernandez, 42, a maths teacher originally from Venezuela, teamed up with Sian Chalkly, a science specialist and fellow teacher at a Woolwich secondary school, with the idea of providing inspiring, hands-on science lessons for children. “The emphasis in the classes is on practicals,” says Hernandez. “We want children to explore science with their own hands; they must touch and see at the same time as understanding the science behind it.” It is this practical element of science education that Hernandez says has fallen victim to the relentless target-driven culture of schools. State primaries generally have one teacher for everything and simply don’t have the time to cover the whole curriculum

77 Chiswick_JUNE15_Education.indd 77

as it is. A 2013 Ofsted investigation found that science lessons were not good enough in more than a quarter of schools and only one-in-20 teachers in primary schools holds a science degree. Secondary schools have the facilities and the specialist teachers but ‘teaching to the test’ rarely allows for the time for practical experiments or a deeper understanding of the topics. “It’s all about targets,” says Hernandez. “When there is a topic that might require greater in-depth explanation teachers just skip the subject altogether. “Things aren’t necessarily much better in the private sector. Prep schools often have the specialist teachers but rarely allow the time for practicals. For two hours every Saturday morning the children have access to Imperial College’s labs and facilities, where PhDladen scientists such as Sian Chalkly teach sessions linked to the Key Stage 2 curriculum, centred on a theme or topic that cover all three sciences and each session is based around a practical experiment. Future plans include further partnerships with universities across London. Ultimately, says Hernandez, “we are not reinventing the wheel or changing the world, we just want to get students to love science.”  For more information or to book a class, visit richereducation.co.uk/saturday-school

he new homes market in west London and indeed the Capital has become very exciting over the last few years. The end of the global recession has heralded some landmark schemes in emerging areas, and demand from both local and international buyers ensures that developers continue to press ahead with innovative new schemes. Having enjoyed a career in the property industry for over 30 years, I’ve been able to see how the local market has changed over time. In 2009, I took over the role of New Homes Director, and recognising the value that a land consultant could add to our developer clients, I rebranded the division as Land and New Homes. We based ourselves in Hammersmith, an interesting part of West London with huge scope for both small and large scale schemes. Our new homes offering has grown incredibly quickly and

we now cover many parts of the Capital. In 2013 and on the back of high activity levels, we opened a second Land and New Homes’ branch to specifically work with clients in South East London and North Kent. There are wonderful locations across London which hold a strong demand from buyers and as such are now benefitting from the addition of regeneration

THE END OF THE GLOBAL RECESSION HAS HERALDED SOME LANDMARK SCHEMES IN EMERGING AREAS through new developments. In West London the arrival of Crossrail in the next few years is likely to see demand increase and subsequently higher property values. Improved transport links to central London stations as well as Canary Wharf and Stratford stations, will see this area become even more desirable among young professionals and investor

landlords. Popular schemes in the area include Lansdowne Lodge in Ealing, which has been expertly designed to reflect the features of the adjacent houses and has flats available from £475,000. Another project worth mentioning is the new Town Square in the heart of the Dickens Yard development which will host markets and cultural events bringing a bustling new energy to Ealing town centre. Shepherd’s Bush, and the surrounding area, has also seen the face of the locality change through new homes construction, and not just for first time buyers. Gayford Villas off Askew Road is a new development of family townhouses with prices from £1,325,000 and again, interest for the family homes is high. I believe that working more closely with developers from the very outset of their development project through to selling the new homes integrates us into the various local communities as a key part of the process. Indeed, this community focused approach is a key hallmark of the KFH brand. u

THE ESTAS AWARDS

In the London South region there was a surprise gold for first time entrant Patrick Henry based in Clapham. Henry who only started the agency just over a year ago said, “In an industry that is moving further into the online sphere, it is critical that traditional estate agents focus on the service they deliver for their clients. The best form of advertising for us is word of mouth.” Chamberland Residential took the gold for Best Letting Agent in London South as rated by landlords. “The ESTAS are the pinnacle of awards in an industry for those who

ondon agents took centre stage at The ESTAS this April. The awards, which were once again hosted by TV Property Expert Phil Spencer, were presented at a lavish lunch and awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane and were attended by 800 of the UK’s top property professionals. The awards, celebrating their 12th year, determine the best estate and letting agents in the UK through research carried out amongst customers who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent. Customers completed over 25,000 surveys during the competition. Spencer, who has hosted the ESTAS every year since their inception in 2003 said, “An agent’s role is to guide people through one of the most stressful times in their lives and that’s not an easy job. The ESTAS

help agencies to focus on customer service levels and that’s why firms keep coming back year after year.” The Edmonton branch of Kings Group won gold for the Best Estate Agent category in the London North region and five other Kings branches were shortlisted across the South East. Karl Knipe Director at Kings Group said, “The ESTAs is the premier property industry litmus test for customer satisfaction.” In the Best Letting Agent category, Thorgills Chiswick won the gold for landlord feedback. Ben Madden, MD at Thorgills said, “Having won two ESTAS in 2014, we entered again this year to help ensure our exceptional service standards were being maintained. Given that the awards are based on client votes, the opportunity to independently review the quality of our work is extremely beneficial. Thankfully the hard work everyone puts in, once again paid off!“

This is our second gold and our fourth award since we started trading in 2011. You also get to see your clients’ comments on your performance over the year, which literally brings tears to my eyes each time I read them... it makes all the stress, sweat and tears completely worth it in the end!” Simon Brown who owns The ESTAS said “The ESTAS are special because shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service they deliver to their clients. Just taking part shows an agent’s commitment to their customers and to be shortlisted is a great achievement in itself. The ESTAS competition for 2016 is already underway and agents, mortgage brokers and conveyancers can register via thestas.com.

MODERNISM The uncompromising style that’s still controversial Wo r d s NIGEL LEWIS

M

odernism has a relatively short history in the UK but it’s been a contentious one. Disliked by a public who have struggled to embrace its tenets and reviled by Prince Charles, the style has remained a niche interest for most homebuilders and buyers. Consequently, Modernist homes are hard to spot in London. This would sadden Modernism’s original and founding architects. Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Erno Goldfinger and Frank Lloyd Wright all tried to introduce a new way of thinking about architecture and, although they created very different designs, embraced a common set of ideas. These included that form that should follow a building’s function; simplicity; honesty about the material used (i.e. no cladding); walls at 90-degree angles and the use of materials originally destined for industrial, rather than architectural, purposes – such as plate glass. What few realise is that Modernism or ‘the Modern movement’ is really a US import via Germany. Architects such as Mies van der Rohe, who honed their skills in Germany’s Bauhaus school between the wars, fled fascism and emigrated to the US. Then, along with US home grown

THE MODERNISTS TRIED TO CREATE A NEW WAY OF THINKING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE talent such as Frank Lloyd Wright, they began designing the white, angular properties we have come to know. But it took another 15 or more years for the style to land in the UK. So where did Modernism spring from? Its roots came both from a desire to find a ‘new architecture’ after the two world wars, the availability of both new materials and building techniques and also from the heavy influence of Art Deco. Modernism went on to have a huge impact on our perception of what a house can be used for including open plan living. But planners are still suspicious of Modernism and in many of London’s conservation areas it’s impossible to get the green light to build a house in this style. Attitudes are changing, albeit glacially, and the occasional highviz project gets the go ahead, a good example being the Shadow House on St Paul’s Crescent behind Kings Cross, built in 2011. More famous but older Modernist houses include Erno

101 STYLE BIBLE.indd 101

Goldfinger’s home at No.2 Willow Road in Hampstead. But perhaps the best known in London is the Grade I listed Isokon Building on Lawn Road, also in Hampstead, built and designed for furniture designer Jack Pritchard during the 1930s. While the Isokon is the most admired, Erno Goldfinger was the best known architect in the UK, partly because Bond creator Ian Fleming had a spat with him during the early 1960s and pinched his surname to give to one of his book (and later film) villains. As well as designing several private houses, shops and schools in London Goldfinger – who was a Hungarian émigré – designed a clutch of tower blocks including most famously Trellick Tower in North Kensington. This brutalist edifice, which features 31 storeys and some 217 flats, was originally built to house council tenants but a growing number of properties within it are now in private hands; a three bedroom apartment within it recently sold for nearly £700,000. Trellick Tower is an example of the controversy Modernism can stir up. Hated by many of the locals, it was given Grade II* status in 1998 and has been home to (and written about) by many musicians including Blur and The Clash. Perhaps finally Modernism is having its day. u

MOST SATISFYING TRANSACTION I’VE HAD:

I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE:

Riverside Lodge – a newly built house finished to exacting standards, in a covetable location on the Thames – was on with several agents for over two years. It ended in a good result for both the client and our buyer, who is now enjoying their new home on Chiswick Mall.

Guinea Pigs used for lawn management on a roof terrace… Apparently they are like sheep but smaller (and more convenient for urban lawns) and they keep the grass nice and trim.

MOST INTERESTING PROPERTY I’VE BEEN INVOLVED WITH:

British Grove Artist Studio is a fabulous space tucked away through a magical archway. I sold the property to the current owners and if I won the lottery, I would love to purchase it myself.

s the first Crossrail line speeds ever closer to completion, the areas surrounding the new stations have already seen development and regeneration throughout West London. In Ealing, this is very much the case, with the upcoming remodelling of the station and the exciting new cinema and film quarter. The improving infrastructure will increase

demand for new homes and the viability of further development, along with an expanding retail market. Transport times for those who currently call Ealing home will improve considerably and soon central London will be mere minutes away. This is likely to introduce a whole new audience who may not have previously considered the area. Ealing currently ticks every other box for young professional families, with great schools and more public open space

than any other borough in London. Crossrail will provide the missing link, enabling commuters to reach Central London at speed; into Bond Street in a mere 11 minutes, and Canary Wharf in just 25 minutes with no changes. In the other direction, Central Heathrow is only 15 minutes away. Few other areas can boast such connectivity both into and out of London, whilst offering excellent value when purchasing a property. A prime example of South Ealing’s development is Abelard Place, W5: £1.1m (pictured). This striking new development comprising three newly built four bedroom houses and two luxurious flats is located in South Ealing. 

PROPERTY / LONDON’S MOST POPULAR four double bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, along with two terraces, one of which can be used for parking. However, there are still nods to the past; in the wooden-panelled conservatory room, a cupboard retains the ornate Edwardian coat hooks that were used by the painters, while black-and-white photographs of the artists who recorded there hang on the white corridor walls - which Marsh and Parsons says could be included in the price. “Everything is open to negotiation and the apartment’s illustrious recent history is certainly beautifully documented by the photos – it would be a shame to see the collection and the property separated,” says Keith Gorny, Prime Sales Director at Marsh & Parsons’ Kensington branch.

More than 300 silver, gold and platinum discs were produced at Lansdowne Studios between the late 1950s and the early Noughties, and its musical past involved some pretty colourful visitors. After an

discovering even more about its history. Built in 1904 as a place where struggling painters could work, Lansdowne House previously housed a studio space as well as a smoking room and even a thermal bath. The property was completely updated, two big skylights were installed and there are now

all-night session, the Sex Pistols had sprayed shaving foam all over the studio window, their dog had messed on the carpet and they’d spilt wine over a mixing desk, according to the studio’s engineer. When it closed in 2006, the current owner completely renovated the space,

The maisonette, in Holland Park, London, has undergone such a successful and stylish transformation that it was featured in magazines and on TV shows, including Grand Designs. “While every property we deal with in Prime Central London has qualities that set it apart to a greater or lesser degree, this really is an exceptional space,” says Keith. Even though it’s priced at £7.5 million, the property isn’t at the top of the market in Notting Hill and Holland Park - a market that Keith says has quietened down a little locally. “Activity is thinner than over the corresponding period last year but this is to be expected during an election year,” he says. “Transactions continue and values are holding up. A notable Marsh & Parsons sale over the last month has included some record breaking prices, not least a Notting Hill house at £24 million that’s set a new precedent!” u
