[WELCOME] THE

Editor’s

LETTER

C

harlize Theron, surely the epitome of the brains and beauty cliché, was quoted in a recent newspaper interview saying that, in society, women are treated like cut flowers that wilt, whereas men are like fine wines; they get better with age. This astute comment reminded me of my interview with Denise Gough, a hugely talented actress currently starring in the lead role in Desire Under the Elms, Eugene O’Neill’s classic tale of greed and lust in 19th-century New England. We discussed not only her once-in-a-lifetime role, but also the sadly still prominent issue of the media’s inherently sexist attitudes. I attended the opening night and it’s genuinely brilliant, with a terrifically gutsy performance from Gough. This month’s lead profile, Suzi Perry, took on the world of boy’s toys and sports broadcasting to become one of TV’s most popular personalities. It’s her sense of humour and ambitious nature, however, that really make an impression. That and her enduring love of Chiswick, of course. Lastly, a big congratulations to Mikael Jonsson and the team at Hedone, who were recently awarded a much deserved Michelin star. See page 50 for our review. I hope you enjoy the issue. See you next month.

Curtain Call Absolutely speaks to Denise Gough, star of the Lyric Theatre’s adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms

Did you know Desire under the Elms before you auditioned? What drew you to the role of Abbie Putnam? I’d never heard of it before. Obviously I’d heard of Eugene O’Neill, but not this particular play. It’s the part of a lifetime. It’s a fantastic story and such a well written woman. I don’t want to sound like another ‘moaning actress’, but when you find a great female role you pray that you get the opportunity to do it and thankfully Sean [Holmes, the director] thought that I could, so I’m really grateful to get to play her.

Would you say that Abbie is a bit of an anti-hero? Some might find her actions quite deplorable. She’s a hero in the sense that she came from nothing, and it was such a man’s world at that time. Her line; ‘I got to fight for what’s due me out of life, if I ever expect to get it’ really sums that up. So you empathise with her? Yes completely and I have to, as an actress I can’t play her unless I can. The decisions she makes, of course, I wouldn’t make them, but I completely understand why she did. The play is considered an American classic, but the plot has elements of Greek tragedies. Are you a fan of this genre? Yes, hugely. I love all of this stuff; darkness,

death, madness... it’s much more interesting! When I’m older I’d love to play Medea. These women are all crazy but they’re amazing to play! What are some of your favourite plays? I recently saw Long Day’s Journey into Night, by Eugene O’Neill, as well, which I thought was incredible. I love Electra (the Sophocles version) and I saw The Last of the Haussmans at the National the other night and I thought that was great. There’s just so many, I could talk all day and it changes week-to-week because I see a lot of stuff. Has being cast in this role opened you to more of Eugene O’Neill’s work? Yes, the rehearsal process just keeps unfolding how great a writer he was. When you work with bad writing, the rehearsal process exposes it, so when you’re being exposed to a great writer, you just want to see and read every play they’ve ever done. Have you always wanted to be an actress? There’s never been anything else I’ve wanted to be, for as long as I can remember.

Do you ever suffer from nerves? Yes of course, but it’s all part of it. When you’re up there you tell the truth, tell the story. If I thought about it too much I’d crack up. You said that Abbie is a great part and a very strong character. Do you think it’s difficult for women to find good, meaty roles like that? I think that applies more in TV than theatre. Eugene O’Neill has written a string of amazing women, Arthur Miller wrote amazing women too. If you read Sean O’Casey’s work, women were the backbone of Irish society. In theatre we (women) are allowed to be strong, as we should be. We need more of that. Do you have any favourite TV shows at the moment? I really loved The Accused and Breaking Bad is amazing. It’s mostly American TV that I’m into at the moment, but I love a bit of trash too! My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, Don’t tell the Bride... sheer mind numbing nonsense. I spend my day dissecting Eugene O’Neill, so nobody can say I don’t read high-end stuff ! As long as you strike the right balance... From 3 October - 10 November, lyric.co.uk

PHOTO ©HUGO GLENDINNING

Is it a more contemporary take on the play? No, not really; it’s loyal in that it’s set in the same time, but I think we’re making certain ‘alternative’ decisions, such as casting me in the role. Abbie’s written as a kind of buxom, voluptuous seductress character, and that’s not my kind of casting. We’re going a bit more feral with the whole thing.

Coming from the west of Ireland, where there wasn’t much opportunity, it’s a dream. I know loads of people say it, but theatre is the thing that makes my heart beat faster. I’ve done TV and loved it; it was great fun, but theatre is when I get to tell a story – beginning, middle and end – every night in front of an audience. If I could afford to, I’d do theatre for the rest of my life.

One of London’s most prolific designers, Paul Smith, has collaborated with British heritage kings Barbour to produce an exclusive autumn/winter collection. The range includes twelve pieces for men and eight for women, modelled here by suitably melancholic models on a typically grim winter’s day. FAVOURITE PIECE OF ART

I love Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites. One of my favourite paintings is Millais’ Ophelia. Saying that, I went to the Hirst exhibition with my daughter earlier this year – I love the contrast between death and beauty.

MOST WANTED

INSPIRATIONS

STEPHEN WEBSTER ART DECO RING SET IN 18CT WHITE GOLD WITH GREEN TOURMALINE, WHITE DIAMONDS AND BLACK SAPPHIRES - £32,400, OPHELIA ©TATE PRESENTED BY SIR HENRY TATE 1894

I covet a ring by the jeweller Stephen Webster. His designs are quite punky and really flashy. I’m a big cocktail ring wearer.

We wanted to set up something that looked like it had been in the neighbourhood a long time. I took inspiration from the road name, Blythe, and was playing around with the idea that it could be someone real. Then I stumbled upon a picture of the twenties actress Betty Blythe; it just felt so right and merged perfectly with this quintessentially English space and idea, with a touch of Hollywood glamour.

Sweet treat

Ironically I don’t really have a sweet tooth, which is probably why I maintain a size 10 figure! However, I will always be able to eat scones, cream and jam.

Fantasy afternoon tea

I think about going to Hollywood all the time. The journey of my life would be to go and pay homage to Betty Blythe, who was from Los Angeles. My fantasy afternoon tea guests would include her, my late granny, Kate Middleton and Posh Spice. She could bring Harper along for my daughter to play with!

TREASURED POSSESSION

My daughter, Ralphine, is my most treasured possession because she belongs to me. My other is a picture of a woman that I bought from a church fête when I was 13. It looks like a Pre-Raphaelite drawing but it’s quite spiritual too. When I was a teenager I loved boot sales, charity shops and markets; it’s something that, from the start, I’ve always been drawn to.

Travel

Local hangout

The Antique Chair serves delicious food and has a playhouse in the garden for the kids.

I’ve got a secret love affair with Southend-on-Sea. I love the fun and the games – it’s got a Victorian seaside charm about it. It sounds corny but I love British seaside holidays.

Gadget

Girl I

Gemma Billington chats to TV star Suzi Perry about cars, Christmas and life after Chiswick

t seems almost ironic that on the day of my interview with TV’s gadget guru Suzi Perry that everything – technology wise – seems to be going wrong. It must be a Monday morning curse, but my normal recording software is down and I end up conducting the interview via loudspeaker, with my trusty dictaphone perched next to my mobile phone in a bustling office space. Not the most professional approach, so I’m fortunate that Perry is friendly and chatty from the get go. Ostensibly we’re in touch to chat about Suzi’s upcoming appearance at the Ideal Home Show, which she has been an ambassador for for the past three years. With the spending season mercilessly upon us once again, Perry will be showcasing and testing the latest games, mod-cons and gizmos. Perry is probably most recognisable from her time on The Gadget Show, but it quickly becomes apparent that her passion lies in sport, particularly motorbiking; the area in which her television career took off. It may come as little surprise that the tomboy pin-up Perry started her career as a model; spending time in Japan and London before her foray in television. The transition

wasn’t, as I had assumed, a life-long ambition, but more of a happy accident with a touch of personal brazenness. ‘I started as a sports reporter with Sky in 1997’, Perry begins, ‘I was a massive motorbike fan and I called Sky up and spoke to the producer and asked why they didn’t do more behind the scenes type features to learn more about the riders. He said “well, who are you?” and I said “I’m nobody; just a bike fan!”’, she laughs at the memory. ‘He asked me to come and see him, which I did, and walked out with a job as a reporter, which I know is an extraordinary story.’ Perry describes the experience as a ‘baptism of fire’, acknowledging that she was thrust into the deep end, broadcasting live television, with absolutely no prior experience. ‘Looking back there’s probably no better way to learn.’ she says, ‘I’m a big believer that if you can’t broadcast live then you shouldn’t really call yourself a television presenter.’ Since her big break, Perry has built-up an impressive CV of television appearances, from Grandstand and Treasure Hunt to The Wright Stuff, and remains a popular and effervescent on-screen personality. She will, however, always be associated with the

stereotypically ‘laddish’ world of sports and gadgets. I ask whether it was ever an issue to be taken seriously in a predominantly male world, but it seems any early hostility washed over Perry like water off a duck’s back. ‘There was definitely a lot of criticism and harsh words when I first started – “what’s a girl doing talking about bikes?” – that kind of stuff’, Perry admits. ‘I suppose for some people it did take a long time for me to not irk them in some way’, she continues, but seems largely unfazed by the experience, concluding, ‘I just worked hard really... I probably had to work harder than if I was a guy. It’s a bit of a cliché but clichés are there for a reason. I think you put yourself out there when you’re in a situation when you’re on your own, but I also got a buzz out of that too, it’s part of the challenge to win people over.’ This admirably ambitious nature has clearly served Perry well in her 15-year career, though it’s perhaps masked by her overtly fun, jovial personality. When I push on the feminism issue, she cites Clare Balding and Sue Barker as inspirations, calling them ‘pioneers for female sports broadcasting’, but ultimately concedes that gender isn’t the most important factor in television; ‘I personally don’t care when I’m watching a show whether it’s a man or a woman presenting, as long as they know what they’re talking about.’ she says, and it’s certainly hard to argue with that.

Perry nowadays flits between working life in London and the bucolic good life in France with her Dutch husband, Bastien Boosten, whom she is clearly still completely smitten with and (jokingly) blames him for having to move away from her beloved Chiswick. Despite swapping her mid-terrace Victorian abode off the High Road for a four bedroom house with a pool, the area still clearly tugs at Perry’s nostalgic heart-strings. “I loved Chiswick,’ she says with a little sigh, ‘the people are friendly, there’s lots of green parks and churches and the river, of course. It’s quite artisan and that’s a rarity in London. There are a lot of shops on the High Street that are chain stores, but I still think it maintains an air of old fashioned London, which I really enjoy. When I think about London, it’s Chiswick that I miss.’ Finally, I bring the conversation back to gadgets and all the exciting new releases at the Ideal Home Show. I ask what, gadget wise, will be appearing on her Christmas list this year. ‘I’m a fan of the Lytro camera, which should be out in this country around Christmas time’ she says, ‘you can change the photos afterwards so it’s quite a different technology. I love photography so that’s on my list’, then she laughs, ‘but I’m sure I won’t get it!’ So Bastien, if you’re reading, make sure to take note.

WORK IT!

For AW12 the sportswear label finds inspiration in strong female pioneers, from motorbike stunt riders like Cesca Miles to the 1940s American pilot Amelia Earhart. Biker influences from padded elbows and asymmetric zips to tattoo-inspired motifs play out in unexpected fabrics such as fleece and lace, while 1940s military and pilot references are reworked in utility outerwear. There’s also more than a hint of futuristic fashion thanks to bold floral print, fluoro accents and reflective piping. 62 Turnham Green, W4; sweatybetty.com

Tom Ford personifies style and elegance – both the man and the brand. As big fans of Mr Ford’s work – from his stunning film A Single Man, to his array of delicate scents both pour femme et pour homme – we couldn’t resist sharing another one of his masterpieces. The Jardin Noir collection is his newest to date, and we’ve picked Café Rose as the best of the bunch. Its aroma is a refined mixture of rose, exotic spices and rich coffee and tops our list as the perfect winter fragrance. £135; 172 Chiswick High Road, W4; uk.spacenk.com

amie Stevens, hairdresser to the stars, has recently opened his ‘Hair by Jamie Stevens’ flagship salon in West Kensington. Absolutely decided to head down and see what all the fuss is about. First things first, this is no ordinary salon. The team behind the name are the ones keeping the X Factor casts’ hair in tip-top condition (they’re the ones who turned Tulisa blonde), and are used to celebrities dropping into the salon for a little star treatment. Unusually within the hairdressing field, (so I am told), they openly encourage each other’s personal portfolio and strongly advocate them forming a separate identity outside of the salon. This mutual respect and support has meant they’ve formed a unit, and with it atmosphere that, for the client, is accommodating, friendly and fun. Despite this impressive work ethic, the most important thing is their hair skills – and let it be said, they are second to none. Unfortunately, on the day of my appointment, the man himself, Jamie Stevens, was not available to snip my locks, but I was placed in stylist Jonathan Andrews’ capable hands. Andrews has been nominated for the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ prize at the British Hairdressing Awards and it is soon clear why. After forming our plan of action, I was passed over to Tasha Stevens, the L’Oreal colour specialist, who got to work concealing my languid ‘dip-dye’ do. We decided to stick to my ‘pretty’ natural colour, and so dyed the straw-like tips brown, and then slathered my hair in an all over gloss to brighten the colour. After a relaxing stint at the washing station - they have chairs that massage better than human hands – it was Jonathan’s go. He kindly left my hair long but chopped off the split ends, revived my limp bangs, et voila! My barnet’s been transformed into a healthy, rich brunette do – move over Cheryl Cole. 9 Russell Gardens, W14; hairbyjamiestevens.co.uk

Absolutely take a tour of interior designer Anthony Collett’s colourful west London abode

here was a time when Anthony Collett was afraid of colour. Not that you would know it now, glancing around his west London home. It shines with colours of all kinds: shimmering golds and racing greens, cobalt blues and ruby reds. Collett’s sitting room, in particular, is a treat for the senses, with almost every surface covered with a collection of Rusking, Moorcroft and Bretby pottery set against walls in Dutch gold leaf and a deep, regal crimson below the Dado rail. ‘Colour is something I came to quite late in life,’ says Collett. ‘I had always feared colour enormously, and my training in design took me towards a uniform architectural-school grey or black and white because they never looked at how to deal with colour. But what really helped me was collecting the vases. I suddenly realised that if colours are good, like the glaze on these ceramics, they could be put together even if they contrasted with one another. If it’s a good colour it can go with virtually anything else.’ Th is revelation came at a time when, to give his wife a break on a Saturday morning, Collett would take their young children out for a walk down Portobello

Road and the street market. The English studio pottery he saw on those weekend trips was affordable so he started collecting, piece by piece, and encouraged by his friends, the artists Gilbert & George, who have one of the largest collections of 19thcentury studio pottery in the country. Slowly, colour began to seep into the Collett’s home, a high-ceilinged and wellproportioned Victorian house. On the raised ground floor, Collett removed a dividing wall to turn two rooms into one large sitting room, with the pottery collection covering the walls, grouped on a complex formation of sconces. The furniture is a mix of period pieces including a Fortuny standing light and Arts and Crafts dining chairs, with a wealth of bespoke pieces designed by Collett himself, including a sofa, stools and a small dining table. Synthetic velvet curtains, of a kind often used in the theatre, reinforce the drama of the room. ‘I do like to think in terms of theatre,’ Collett says, ‘and I suppose subliminally I was also influenced by Africa and African art, because I was born in Zambia. And so there was the enormous influence of art, music, tribal theatre and things like that.’ Traces of tribal patterns surface in the

upholstery and fabrics, and a passion for texture, natural materials and sculptural shapes is evident. The solid foundation of his work, however, are in the classical architecture, paying close attention to proportion, symmetry and scale, but applied to a more contemporary look. Other parts of Collett’s house suggest this grounding more clearly, such as the basement that was originally a separate flat and then integrated back into the rest of the house in the form of an open-plan kitchen and dining room. Collett designed the space with oak panelling and a marble surround around the cooking range in the kitchen, painted tongue and groove in the dining area and a salvaged Victorian vestry cabinet along one wall. ‘These are the words I use to describe what we do: classical, contemporary, traditional, eclectic,’ says Collett. ‘But it all depends on where we are. We are chameleons. We will adapt our vocabulary and pallette accordingly. It’s the same with my house. It’s one style, one of many outfits...’ Taken from The Iconic Interior: 1900 to the Present by Dominic Bradbury, published by Thames & Hudson. Photography by Richard Powers

Born in Zambia, Anthony Collett went to school and university in South Africa before going to London to study Fine Art and Sculpture at the Hornsey College of Art. He went on to study interior design and attended the Royal College of Art. Collett was mentored by and worked with interior designer John Stefanidis for seven years. A partnership with interior architects John McCloud followed before the formation of Collett Champion, together with David Champion, in the late 1980s. Collett now works in partnership with Andrzej Zarzycki under the name Collett-Zarzycki, focusing on architectural design and furniture design with a range of residential and hotel projects in the UK, Europe and further afield.

Award-winning gardener Kate Gould offers THIS MONTH’S TOP TIP If you want to keep on enjoying your garden as the nights draw in and become darker, then here are a few top lighting tips I’ve put together: • A simple uplighter on a spike (that can be moved around as the plant grows) looks particularly dramatic under architectural plants such as Phormium or Dicksonia. • Consider your neighbours and don’t floodlight the garden, not everything needs to be lit! • Light your terrace softly allowing room to add candles when dining. • Try lighting trees. Silver birch looks wonderful when lit in the winter. • Although coloured lights are fun for parties, stick to a warm white light at other times. Plants look their best when softly lit. kategouldgardens.com

Nature The historic Syon Park estate welcomed a Waldorf Astoria hotel last year. Elaine O’Connell discovers the surprising culinary secrets within

F

or fans of Syon Park or those who grew up in close proximity to the Duke of Northumberland’s historic estate, it may have come as an unwelcome surprise when they learned of plans to build a luxury hotel within the grounds. Having received the go ahead from the Duke himself, however, and since opening its doors in March 2011, the London Syon Park, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel (to give it its full name) has been a resounding hit; faithful to and respectful of its historic location and designed to take advantage of its sumptuous natural surroundings. This is most apparent in the hotel’s surprise ace up its sleeve; it’s a veritable foodie heaven. Upon arrival, the hotel is, though grand in scale, unexpectedly modest in design which belies the luxe, brightly coloured interior. Our room is gorgeous and spacious with an absolutely enormous bed. I would describe as the decor as ‘contemporary gothic’, and

we’re treated to a well proportioned balcony overlooking the beautiful Great Conservatory. The building was once the London Butterfly House which unfortunately closed due to lack of funding. There’s a reference to its roots in the exotic butterfly enclosure in the hotel’s lobby, and also in it’s logo. Syon Park’s relationship to nature is intrinsic to the hotel’s infrastructure; there are plenty of accessible terraces and outdoor spaces – including a ‘secret garden’ accessible to all guests – fresh, exotic flowers, and it’s even home to Europe’s oldest bonsai tree. At night, the plants and gardens come to life through subtle lighting. It’s a wholly unique way to balance the natural splendour of its location with the hotel’s corporate use; being close to Heathrow airport and popular for weddings and events. But let’s get back to the food... Unlike standard hotels that consist of a simple bar and restaurant set-up, there’s a number of options to whet your appetite at

the hotel. To satisfy a sweet tooth, a decadent afternoon tea is held regularly, and Brownies, an indulgent ice cream bar, provides a more informal treat that’s definitely not just for kids – wait until you try one of their ‘boozy sundaes’ – a Manhattan will never be the same again. Any hotel worth its salt has a well-stocked bar and The Peacock Alley had me like a kid in a candy shop. Named and designed as a reference to the iconic New York Waldorf Astoria, the bar has a slightly different ambience to the rest of the hotel – and it certainly appears to be the most popular hangout. With more high-quality brands of spirits and tempting cocktails than you can shake the proverbial stick at, and regular live music, it would be easy to while away the hours without leaving the bar. But to miss The Capability restaurant, located just behind Peacock Alley, would be a crime. The Capability is the hotel’s main restaurant, named after ‘England’s greatest

gardener’, the 18th-century landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Executive chef, Neil Thrift, recently joined the team and has concocted a menu of organic, seasonal British cuisine with European twists. Surprisingly adventurous ingredients such as snails, black pudding and rabbit tick all the right boxes for the more carnivorous connoisseur. Thrift is fortunate enough to have Syon Park’s trout lake, edible gardens and meat reared on the Duke of Northumberland’s Alnwick estate at his disposal. There’s also a beautiful greenhouse in the grounds, which is not only used for growing the freshest fruit and veg, but can also be hired out for intimate dining parties. Once settled into the The Capability, I order a Scandinavian inspired crab starter, served with delectable segments of quails eggs. It’s sublime and refreshing,

accompanied by delicate, skeletal pieces of rye bread. My partner opts for Dorset snails (which are fast-becoming Thrift’s signature dish), served with black pudding, wild boar bacon and garlic butter. Our mains are girolles mushroom risotto with white truffle oil and for my partner, melt-in-the-mouth Kingairlock Red deer. The evening is finished off with a shared summer berry pavlova before we head (buttons straining at the seams) back to the bar for a nightcap. It’s all too easy to assume that the humble ‘hotel restaurant’ won’t be up to scratch, but it would be foolish to dismiss the culinary

excellence that is The Capability based on snobbish preconceptions. By word of mouth and stellar reviews, the restaurant has already established itself as a culinary favourite that categorically holds its own amongst west London’s countless high calibre competition. Thrift’s menu provides more than a couple of pleasant surprises with its daring ingredients and commitment to locally sourced produce. Whilst the restaurant and its numerous foodie hotspots are popular with customers who aren’t staying at the hotel, I can’t tell you the joy in gorging on divine food, cocktails and wine, and then simply taking the lift back upstairs to flop back onto that enormous bed. Perfect. Rooms start from £319 per night. londonsyonpark.com 47

The Pleasure Gemma Billington samples culinary prowess at newly Michelin-starred Hedone

Hedone

301 - 303 Chiswick High Road, W4 020 8747 0377 hedonerestaurant.com

I

t doesn’t take long, when writing about food, to encounter myriad exhausted descriptions and clichés. There’s always a requirement to categorise a restaurant and its cuisine, and although there are elements of French and Swiss influence, Chiswick’s Hedone cannot so easily be pigeonholed. Hedone roughly translates as ‘pleasure’ in Greek, which is fitting given the passion and precision that founder and chef, Mikael Jonsson, puts into his creations. It’s also a fitting word for the sensations they evoke. A one-time solicitor and avid food blogger, Jonsson threw caution to the wind and left the staid world of law for the tempestuous one of restaurateur, opening Hedone on the High Road in July last year. Since then, Jonsson and his craft have steadily gained acclaim, primarily through word of mouth and fellow food bloggers, not to mention top marks from critic, AA Gill. To top it off, Hedone was recently awarded a much coveted Michelin star. Th roughout his life, Swiss-born Jonsson encountered numerous food intolerances which shaped his unique and meticulous approach to cooking. Hedone’s bread (worth a visit alone) is 100 per cent natural and has no artificial yeast. The butter is unpasteurised and even the house champagne is natural and made without sulphur.

Hedone’s menu changes sporadically throughout the year (even half way through the day, if Jonsson feels so inclined) and the lunch menu is split into a concise, moderately priced two or three course affair, or a more indulgent taster menu option. As a treat, I am offered a piece from the taster menu; the (almost signature) cuttlefish tagliatelle with its ragú. It’s not at all what I expect; paper thin ribbons of cuttlefish over jet black ink served with a plump, basil infused tomato bursting with flavour. To start, I opt for a duck’s egg foamy omelette (unbelievably light) with girolles, apricot, fresh almonds and parsley. For mains it’s Dorset plaice, buckwheat savoy cabbage and oyster hollandaise whilst my companion tries the Tamworth pork leg and ‘coco de Paimpol’ (a semi-dry haricot bean). The food is divine; a bold yet unpretentious

mélange of seasonal flavours. Each dish is executed with acute precision and attention to detail. Jonsson has a tendency to mix sweet and savoury flavours, for example with the sweet apricot and earthy girolles, yet any hint of experimentation is pulled off without the Heston Blumenthal pageantry. Lunch is rounded off with a poached vine peach served with a macaron and pistachio ice cream. The fruit’s natural blood red hue fi lls the glass dish and the macaron is a touch of genius. The Hedone experience is one you feel inclined to share with friends and family. It’s a joy to watch Jonsson and his team at work in the restaurant’s open-plan kitchen and, for every unusual ingredient and combination on the menu, it’s the inherently simple pleasure of good, fresh food that lies fi rmly at Hedone’s core.

East meets West The Spice Route comes to Ealing

Y

ou may be mistaken for thinking this place is in Dean Street or Mayfair, for that matter. But wait! This is Ealing and the Koobla Bar and Restaurant is now the hippest, edgiest restaurant to hit W5. If you haven’t been to Bond Street for a while, there is now a reason to return: Koobla is a luxurious space within Ealing’s first boutique hotel – Xanadu. Opening this month, Hotel Xanadu has undergone a £4 million redevelopment and is designed to lure West London’s style seekers, as well as its foodies. With 46 rooms and 2 suites, both the hotel and restaurant are inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1797 poem – Kubla Khan – which describes Xanadu, the summer palace of the Emperor of China, Kublai Khan.

Terracotta soldiers line the walls of Koobla, creating a dark, seductive atmosphere enhanced by warm earthy colours, textured ceramic flooring and plush seating – perfect for both romantic rendezvous and business meetings. Koobla’s menu – as well as the bar’s cocktail menu – are inspired by the Silk Route journey. Head chef ‘Kin’, who was previously head chef at Ken Hom’s Yellow River Café, commented: “Our menu brings dishes from North West China, India and the Middle East to Ealing. Each contains a myriad of different spices and vegetables combined with lamb (eaten in the cold countries along the Silk Route), the prawns and fish that are so common in China and the European desire for steak.”

Kin’s personal favourite dishes are his noodle platters: seafood, jumbo prawn, and the divine lamb skewer, which have also scored highly with guests to date, along with his many signature side dishes. Koobla is sure to be an enduring hot ticket for Ealing. Prices for such creative cuisine are extremely reasonable – platters are £10.50 for a combination of 3. The Koobla Christmas menu (£28 for 2 courses or £35 for 3 courses per person) will also be available from 12 November. Absolutely readers are invited to be among the first to sample the Koobla menu, please bring an original of this article to receive a complimentary glass of wine per head to accompany your meal. koobla.co.uk and hotelxanadu.com

THE HOTEL The Montpellier Chapter is Regency Cheltenham’s funkiest new hotel. Set in the fashionable Montpellier quarter, famed for its chic independent boutiques and restaurants, the Chapter’s classical exterior gives little hint of the revolutionary design within. Wave farewell to outdated reception desks: paperless check-in is conducted on a 1.2 ton sphere of solid English oak. Reception rooms, including a library and mirror backed bar, are decorated in muted tones with low slung, streamlined furniture by British designer Matthew Bilton and specially commissioned contemporary art works. Behind the Grade II-listed villa, an ultramodern crescent-shaped wing overlooks a secluded glass veiled inner courtyard inspired by the original conservatory. Illuminated by a striking new glass chandelier, the conservatory is the perfect place to enjoy a post shopping cocktail. THE BEDROOM: Sixty bedrooms – plus a swish penthouse - are divided into four categories. Sixteen rooms in the new wing feature oak flooring, walls of Bath stone and bathrooms incorporated into the bedrooms. In the original villa, restrained colour schemes are complemented by muscular, blond furniture and vibrant modern art. Some rooms have their own private balconies with views over the rooftops. All come with nice touches including a pre-loaded iPod, Wi-Fi, TV with Sky and complimentary mini bar plus a Nespresso coffee machine, kettle and treats. You’re guaranteed to sleep like a baby on downy beds dressed with crisp white Egyptian cotton. THE BATHROOM: Monochrome bathrooms have both baths and spacious monsoon showers plus thick towels, fluffy robes and generous supplies of luscious REN products. If modesty prevails,

Montpellier Chapter Hotel, Cheltenham

a sheer curtain separates the open bathing area in the feature rooms from the main bedroom. There is also a separate shower. THE SPA: The hotel spa transports Cheltenham’s natural health traditions into the 21st century. Beautifully designed, it comprises four timber clad cocoon-like circular treatment rooms, a compact steam room and chill-out area. REN products, made in Devon from natural ingredients, feature in the simple but effective treatment menu. If you’re pressed for time, try the Express Signature Facial. Combining gentle massage with REN’s bespoke unguents, it guarantees a soothing quick fix for tired skin. For workout fans, there’s a small fitness room and access to the pool at nearby Cheltenham Ladies College.

THE RESTAURANT: Consultant Chef Simon Hopkinson of Bibendum has collaborated with Head Chef Tom Rains to create a modern menu chiming with the hotel’s Rule Britannia philosophy. Changing with the seasons, the menu features British favourites and classic dishes created around the best ingredients to be enjoyed beneath a handsome barrel vaulted ceiling. The bustling open kitchen with a beech clay oven centre stage creates a theatrical yet informal atmosphere whilst friendly staff add to the buzz. An interactive wine list is an innovative way to select the plonk. You can also dine al fresco on the terrace or in the courtyard but don’t miss breakfast: cooked to order, the eggs Benedict are a triumph. GET THERE: Trains from Paddington departing about every thirty minutes – some are direct. By car: two and a half hours from London via the A40/M40 (via Oxford) or the M4 (Swindon exit) or a short distance from the M5 (junctions 11 and 11a). AUBERGE DU SOLEIL, NAPA VALLEY

This is one of the original wine country destinations. Founded by French-born restauranteur Claude Rouas, the Auberge Du Soleil began life as the Napa Valley’s first fine-dining establishment in 1981. It soon turned into a spa and hotel in 1985 and eventually a whole philosophy on life – coined by the founders in three words, ‘Pleasure is Healing.’ In this case, drinking wine in front of a beautiful view is tantamount to this pleasure (The Auberge is celebrated as having the best view in the entire county). Terraced on a hillside, the accommodation is comprised of rooms and exclusive private houses and listed by the type of view they have: The Garden View, The Hillside View, The Lower and Upper Valley Views. And it’s hard not to coo over the design (think Meditteranean-inspired decor with super cool contemporary art, French windows and private terraces). They even take into account the guest’s taste in art and design, by adding bespoke

touches, to maximise the amount of aesthetic pleasure (and therefore healing) that they receive. These days, the Executive Chef is Robert Curry who does a top notch job running the aforementioned Michelin-starred restaurant, and the bistro & bar situated on the wraparound deck – the perfect place for a quick bite. In addition, there is a serious wine programme featuring over 1,500 selections that would make even the most hardened connoisseur quiver. Continuing with healing theme, the 7,000 sq ft spa is an essential and exclusive part of the guest’s experience (no outsiders allowed). Using indigenous ingredients from the region, the water ritual – a soak in three temperate springs which overlook vineyards and olive groves – is a must and provides an excellent final flourish to the hotel’s magnificence. Prices start from $775 USD per person, per night, including breakfast. +1 707 963 1211; aubergedusoleil.com

THE INN ABOVE TIDE SAN FRANCISCO

BEVERLY WILSHIRE LOS ANGELES

You may, as Otis Redding did, find yourself ‘sitting on the dock of the bay,’ but if you are staying at The Inn Above Tide in San Fransisco, you are likely to be holding a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon in one hand and receiving an in-room hand massage to the other. Not so desolate as the age-old tune would have you believe, eh? This quirky San Fransisco hotel with breathtaking views of the city’s skyline, Alcatraz and Angel Island, hangs over the bay so you literally see the water lapping beyond your window as you wake up and retire for the night. It’s got an external quality that is rather like a good old English pub: period-looking, jutting out over the water and with its name emblazoned unapologetically on the front. But internally it is pure waterside, rustic luxury. All the deluxe rooms are deckedout with four-poster beds, log fires and teak furnished private decks – the perfect place to enjoy the sweeping views. There are activities and luxury trips for residents, organised by the hotel, to Sausalito, Marin County, San Fransisco City itself and the Wine Country plus beautiful Golden Gate Bridge is only five minutes away. In addition, the spa is focused on deep relaxation – massage, facials, acupuncture and alternative health – no nips or tucks here. San Fran is where you let it all hang out. With a ferry dock literally from The Inn, the tour of the bay is instantly accessible, as well as other parts of the city and its great eateries, by boat. Rooms start from $325 USD and go up to $1,150 USD for the full works. +1 415 332 9535; innabovetide.com

Situated just around the corner from the world-famous Rodeo Drive, the four star Beverly Wilshire exudes both old and new Hollywood glamour. Dating back to 1928, it has seen its fair share of stage and screen stars come and go. Add to that American Presidents, Heads of State and the King himself (Elvis, of course), you’re pretty much surrounded by the entire Hollywood Forever Cemetery past and present. The Wilshire is comprised of two wings, one old (The Wilshire Wing) and one new (The Beverly Wing), however there is little difference in the overall style of either. The same high standards and luxury features abound (like italian marble surfaces, pillowtop mattresses, iPod docks, dedicated room service and surround sound). All restaurants on site are fine-dining, including ‘restaurant of the year’ Wolfgang Puck’s steakhouse, Cut, which is frequented by both Hollywood locals as well as out-oftowners. Then there’s the BLVD, an all-day world-class dining restaurant overlooking the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive, which is perfect for celeb watching and cocktails before dinner in its old-fashioned bar. The Spa at the Beverly Wilshire is renowned for its transformational organic and anti-ageing treatments plus the miracles performed in the name of inchloss before awards ceremonies. It being a Four Seasons hotel, the 24-hour service is the best in the world, but that is hardly a surprise, is it? Island in the sun Katie Randall discovers culinary ability whilst unwinding in the idyllic subtropical climate of Sardinia

O

n most holidays guests expect to be treated like kings and queens by hotel staff, but how many times can you say that you got to play the role of a God on holiday? I don’t mean stomping around with a fleet of manservants and discovering the ability to eat unholy amounts of the local delicacy – in this case Sardinian pasta fregola – without putting on a single pound. No. On the second day of my holiday to Sardinia’s Forte Village Resort, in their unique Thalassotherapy pools, I found myself enhanced with the uncanny and downright godly ability to walk on water. I have been very lucky thus far in my career to visit some of the best spas in London, but Forte Village in the Santa Margherita di Pula region of Sardinia have patented something that I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams. It is in their circuit of six Thalassotherapy pools that this little miracle occurs. After a short walk up a winding arbor lined path, my companion and I found ourselves at a beautiful pool area with the large current-

driven jet pool and two smaller oil pools. In the first little lagoon, murky brown and scented, I became endowed with complete weightlessness – literally walking on water, (well, almost). The density of this oil is so intense that you struggle to move through the pool without your limbs being vaulted upwards onto the surface of the liquid. Cue hilarious bobbing motions and eventual face first flop into the oil; true bliss, in my humble opinion, is being presented with the opportunity to have a good giggle whilst being able to deeply moisturise the skin. The ensuing sea water lagoons, of which you visit one by one, are heated to varying temperatures and each has a different density of salt. All encourage complete relaxation, allowing the mind to float away; and little inflatable head rests are provided by most of the pools so that you can keep your face dry while drifting off to your happy place. I finished the circuit, probably enacting another godly power – floating on cloud nine. The icing on the cake of this, my second day in Sardinia, was a Honey and Salt exfoliating massage. In a little hut surrounded by

greenery, I was scrubbed and buffed with natural sea salt, before honey was drizzled on my body and massaged in. Whilst lounging in the courtyard afterwards, I discovered that the spa stock one of my favourite international skincare brands Murad, meaning skin is in safe hands. It is not just relaxation that this resort does well – although I should quickly mention the private pristine beach, beautiful enough to rival any Caribbean stretch of sand, and a plethora of pools and canopied bars – food is also very important to Sardinians, as well as using fresh ingredients and creating dishes lovingly from scratch. I learnt this very quickly during a cooking lesson, experienced on site, with one of their charming chefs, Fiscio. Never admit to a Sardinian that you occasionally buy ready-made pasta sauces from the supermarket, the withering look that ensues is not pleasant. Luckily for me, the man himself was about to reveal some secrets at the heart of this well-loved cuisine that I could take home and show off with. We learnt to make a perfectly smooth creamy tomato sauce, with the juicy Camona

tomato typical to the region and the largest fresh basil leaves that I have ever seen. The sauce accompanied little balls of special Sardinian pasta fregola, and we also cooked pasta en papillote, (the kind of treatment I thought only fish received). The resort has its own kitchen garden and as well as these fun and informal cooking classes, guests can enjoy a tour around the gardens with the chefs, learning and tasting as they go. Most excitingly for food buffs, the resort often brings in culinary greats to head up the gourmet restaurants and give lessons to the guests. Gordon Ramsay regularly makes appearances at special gala dinners and hosts classes, in between cooking up a storm in the kitchen – as does Rocco Iannone, a Michelinstarred chef from Naples who takes over the chic white space that is Forte Gourmet every summer from the end of June until the end of August. The opportunity to grill worldrenowned chefs while tucking into their fare is just too juicy an opportunity to miss. The thing that struck me most about this resort is that they have the space and facilities to cater for all sorts of holidaymakers. Set

in sprawling tropical gardens, Forte Village contains a variety of different accommodation and the surrounding facilities reflect that area’s unique vibe. Two giant pools, one with 250 metres of slides, are dedicated to kids and they sit near the picture-perfect Il Villaggio complex. Ideal for families, these bungalows feature a patio and garden for balmy evenings and play – and the suites have all the modcons you would expect. Personally, I recommend staying in one of the southern-most handful of bungalows, tucked away a stones throw from the beach. The very luxurious Le Dune villas charmed me as soon as I saw them. A nice retreat from the busier areas of the resort, every suite has its own tropical garden and patio on which I found myself reading a book before dinner on more than one occasion. On my first night I had an indulgent long bubble bath in the massive tub (there was also a rainforest shower in the bathroom), before opening up my floor-to-ceiling sliding french window, sitting on the patio and letting my body lotion sink in whilst watching the sun sink behind the horizon.

The thinking behind most resort holidays is that you never have to leave the surroundings of the resort, and this very fact might scare people off – what if you don’t like the environment you find yourself in? With Forte Village Resort, I didn’t actually want to leave. It is very easy to venture out and explore the island in a hire car if you so wish, but between the go-karting, spa trips, 21 eateries of varying styles, the beach, kids clubs, shopping arcade featuring beautiful luxury brands and evening stage shows in the Piazza Maria Luigia (I saw the Gipsy Kings during my visit) – I’m not sure you would find the time nor the compulsion to leave. 7 nights at Forte Village Resort, Sardinia from £991 per person on a half board basis staying at the 4* Il Villaggio, based on two adults sharing a room. Price includes return flights with British Airways from London Heathrow and airport transfers. M

y property career started in 1999 after a stern talking to from all the women in my family (five in total), who had very strong opinions about estate agents and a lot of experience both buying and selling property. They advised me to never be arrogant, never lie to my clients, make sure I listen to their needs and never be late for appointments. Naturally, all of their advice stuck with me! I’ve always understood and fully appreciated that the process of buying or selling a house is one the most stressful experiences in people’s lives. Quite rightly, people choose their estate agent based on their experience, professionalism and the ability to deliver the best possible results. But they also need to be looked after. Many years later, armed with wisdom and experience, I’ve managed to forge a promising and fruitful career selling property. I’m fortunate enough to be working for what I believe to be one of the top estate agents in London. I began working in the Brook Green and Brackenbury Village area in 2007, and have always considered it to be a hidden gem - a lovely surprise for an area in London! Over the years, Brook Green has retained its community charm, boasts excellent local schools and a variety of stunning architecture. It’s not difficult to see why an increasing number of people want to invest in this area and once they move, they never want to leave! With each season, there are always trends emerging in the property market, and currently the most notable is what I like to call ‘the next door neighbour effect’. To put it simply, since 2009, house prices in prime central London have risen by 35% and the knock on effect is that prices in this area have subsequently risen by 25%. Although neighbouring areas such as Chiswick, Holland Park and Notting Hill are still hugely popular, we’ve seen an influx of new buyer registrations. This means the high level of competition has made it easier to trim the fat from the market: the best buyers know that if they hesitate, they will probably lose out on their dream home. Thanks to the quality of properties we currently have available, getting serious buyers through the door has become easier, and needless to say the best properties get snapped up quickly. Brook Green has plenty to offer, and with one of Europe’s largest shopping complexes, what’s not love!

EALING HALF MARATHON Ealing’s first Half Marathon was a tremendous success and historic moment for Ealing. Paul Connolly, Managing Director of Orchards of London said: “Having finished at 1 hour and 35 minutes with my business partner Joseph Murphy was a joyous moment, but to see the rest of the Orchards of London team competing was a proud moment, something the whole company said they would like to do again next year. We would also like to congratulate the winner Jonathan Stead who finished in a breathtaking 1 hour and 9 minutes. We hope that we can be part of this wonderful event again next year – raising even more awareness and money for the Epilepsy Action.” Kelvin Walker, Race Director of the Ealing Half Marathon said: “The day was a tremendous success and we thank everyone who participated and who came to support the runners. We would also like to thank all our sponsors and volunteers on the day and hope that we can organise an even more successful Half Marathon next year for a fantastic cause.” The Half Marathon was attended by more than 3,500 runners. Participants came from across the country to support Ealing’s first half marathon. For more information on the event please visit www.orchardsoflondon.com or visit the Orchards of London Facebook page, www. facebook.com/orchardsoflondon. Orchards of London are dedicated to serving its community and take each charitable request seriously and hope to help even more charitable organisations in the coming years. Epilepsy Action is Britain’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation acting as the voice of the UK’s estimated 600,000 people with epilepsy. The charity’s aim is to raise awareness of the conditions, improve epilepsy care standards and to give people with epilepsy a fair chance of finding and keeping a job. QUESTION TIME

This year, tickets to the West London Action for Children (WLAC) Quiz Night were sold out in record time. It promises to be a stellar year! William Cox, the Quiz Master, always takes great trouble to find questions to suit his audience, and the atmosphere in The Great Hall of St Paul’s Girls’ School is positively electric! It is a hugely enjoyable evening, which raises about £10,000 for the West London Action for Children, a very worthy cause indeed. The charity offers a range of counselling and therapy services for children in need and their families. They support families under stress to develop their confidence and skills to cope with the ordinary and extraordinary challenges of family life. Many thanks to Bective Leslie Marsh for their generous sponsorship and support over the years. wlac.org.uk, bectivelesliemarsh.co.uk

Property MARKET INSIGHT: PRIME LOCATION: “The reality is that demand still outstrips supply” suggests Andrew Nunn, “but what is starting to change is that the buyers are becoming increasingly discerning about where they spend their money. This starts with location and if the property is in a prime location then, subject to correct pricing (I will come back to that point), we are receiving multiple bids. For properties that are in secondary or tertiary locations then demand is still good but the asking price MUST be realistic to get the same result. The amount of information in the public domain means that buyers know their market and will walk away from property that is deemed overpriced. There is little natural excitement about the housing market currently, so you have to create it via the pricing mechanism. There are a large number of agents chasing a limited amount of properties for sale, which inevitably leads to a degree of overpricing and over promising. I would always advise to obtain three valuations from reputable agents and as a rule the mid-range valuation is likely to be the one to run with.” Andrew Nunn, Director 020 8995 1500 andrew@andrewnunnassociates.co.uk

MARKET GROWTH: Now the Olympics euphoria has worn off (sadly), people looking to buy and rent are back in force! Good properties priced correctly are flying off the shelves and the continued limited supply keeps competition keen. Whilst the market remains strong and focused, buyers certainly have the money, some are being more circumspect about what they offer. On the lettings side, rents appear to have stabilised given the upward trend in the first half of the year which is great news for tenants. There are opportunities all around and we welcome this apparent stability in both the sales and lettings markets. Paul Cosgrove, Director at Finlay Brewer; 020 7371 4171; paul@finlaybrewer.co.uk

ROGUE AGENTS PLACE LANDLORDS AND TENANTS AT RISK By Susan Fitz-Gibbon, Founder and Director of specialist letting agents Fitz-Gibbon and also President-Elect of ARLA ahead of her Presidency in 2013. There’s a constant stream of stories on the television and in the press about rogue lettings agents; many are unlicensed and others don’t stick to the professional and ethical codes of practice required by services like The Property Ombudsman (TPO), The Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA) and The National Approved Lettings Scheme (NALS). Often the public is unaware of the strict codes of practice upheld by our industry regulators, so we need better education for consumers, a drive to ensure voluntary membership to regulatory bodies is maximised and an ultimate push to ensure lettings agents are legally regulated in the same way estate agents are. Currently, as regulation is not a legal requirement for lettings agents, anyone can set up an agency and employ untrained and unqualified staff to handle volumes of tenancies along with large sums of money. The threat posed by rogue agents increases as the lettings market is growing and the statistics are worrying. Last year alone (2011), there was a 26% rise in complaints made against lettings agents to the Ombudsman, totalling 7,641 enquiries of which 55% were from landlords. More than 25% of the complaints concerned agents not registered with the Ombudsman scheme, so consumers’

only redress would be to take costly legal action. It’s a daunting prospect in the current economic climate when landlords and tenants require as much financial and legal protection as possible. Until regulation becomes statutory, it’s reassuring to know that professional lettings agents voluntarily join organisations like ARLA to demonstrate they are both genuine and ethical. ARLA members, for example, are required to protect clients’ money, register with an approved DPS (Deposit Protection Scheme), provide accurate valuations and extensive legal training for staff, adhere to certain by-laws and uphold the highest standards in residential lettings. That includes adopting due diligence in identifying fraudulent applications and conducting thorough reference checks. At present, associations like ARLA provide a kite mark for members and are hugely beneficial in providing a distinguishing factor from rogue agents. However, legal redress should be our ultimate goal, and if lettings agents were compelled to register with such a scheme we would see improvements year on year like those seen after The Consumers, Estate Agents and Redress Act 2007 was passed. Administered by the Secretary of State, this Act for Estate Agents makes regulation compulsory and helps ensure rogue agents are driven out of the market altogether. Consumers and reputable lettings agents must get together to drive this change for the lettings industry. fitz-gibbon.co.uk, 0208 995 3335

HAMPTONS GEARS UP FOR THE SEASON AHEAD Hamptons International, the leading UK residential property company, is delighted to announce its sponsorship of Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club for the 2012/2013 season. The sponsorship will begin in October, and will run until the end of the season in April 2013. It comes at a time when the London 2012 Olympics has captured the nation’s enthusiasm for sport, with all eyes on local homegrown talent, something that Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club has in abundance. Hamptons International will be sponsoring the Ealing Trailfinders Minis, aged between 4-12 years, which

form part of one of the largest youth rugby sections in the UK with over 850 mini and youth members. Hamptons International has long been involved with sponsoring local rugby clubs and is committed to supporting local communities. Like Hamptons International, Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club is a proud heritage brand. The club was founded in 1871 and is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the world. Located in West Ealing, Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club is also one of the biggest community rugby clubs in the UK, with around 3,000 members over South West London. hamptons.co.uk, ealingrugby.co.uk

Best kept secret – St. Paul’s Girl’s school on the green has had several distinguished directors of music, most notably Gustav Holst (1905–34). Holst composed what is arguably his most well-known work, The Planets while teaching at St Paul’s. Finest cocktail – Mojito’s at the Bird in Hand, perfect to whisk you to a sandy beach, far away.

Stylish boutique – Honeybunch, if interior design is your thing, you’ll find something there you will like.

A lost hour – There’s nothing quite like disappearing into The Queens Heads large garden and whiling away an hour or two over lunch.

This fully modernised beautiful five bed, two bath terraced family house has just been taken on in Cranbrook Road, W4. The family who started ‘Fullers’ Fuller, Smith & Turner PLC lived in Cranbrook Road and there is an old depot which is now used as a car park for staff at the brewery down by the river on Chiswick Mall directly behind the house. A fantastic, end of terrace Victorian house, providing over 3,950 sq ft of accommodation over five floors. The house has recently been meticulously refurbished throughout with great attention to detail.

The second floor has two generous double bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms, whilst the third floor has two double bedrooms and a family shower room.

Behind the classical Victorian façade lies a modern family house providing greater than average width and beautifully proportioned rooms, excellent natural light and an overall sense of space.

The house benefits from cloakrooms on the lower and raised ground floors, a large under pavement vault which makes an ideal wine cellar room and built in wardrobes in most of the bedrooms.

Accommodation consists of a dual aspect reception room overlooking the front and rear gardens. On the lower ground floor there is a large kitchen/dining room with French doors on to the rear garden.

The split level garden is east facing and has been landscaped with a patio to the rear of the house with steps up to a lawned area with a hard standing for a large family car to the rear accessed via electronically controlled double gates from Astrop Terrace. There are outside taps, outside power points and lighting.

The master bedroom provides a wonderful en-suite bathroom and separate dressing room. This floor also provides a study/nursery.
