eptember is the month of fresh starts – a new season, a new school year, a new set of style rules. For some this is daunting, for others, liberating, but for me it’s exciting – like a blank piece of paper waiting to be filled. Also celebrating a new beginning this month is The Saturdays singer Mollie King, who grew up on the leafy streets of Wandsworth. She tells us all about the band’s recently-released greatest hits album, her move into fashion and her latest range for high street brand, Oasis. We also spoke to Wimbledon fashion designer Zaeem Jamal about his beautiful Autumn Winter ‘14 Collection, which has been inspired by the tales of Camelot. And staying with the fashion theme, we went behind the scenes at Battersea-based

9 WIM_Sept_Eds_Letter.indd 9

Vivienne Westwood’s bridal couture studio, to discover just how she makes those dresses so unique. This month also happens to be our Antipodean Travel Special, featuring the best of Sydney and New Zealand’s North Island, with a quick stop over in Singapore. Get lost in the travel pages and find inspiration for your next trip abroad. As for new beginnings, it’s also time for me to say goodbye. Thanks for reading over the last two years; it has been a pleasure. I leave you in the capable hands of our new editor, Romy van den Broeke. ◆

ARTS & CULTURE / REVIEW

Annie Get Your Gun The Tony award-winning musical, Annie Get Your Gun, comes to New Wimbledon Theatre Wo r d s C h r i s s y I l e y

T

here is a feeling of excitement and urgency as I sit downstairs in the caverns of an old church in North London. Above I can hear stomping feet and the murmur of a familiar tune, 'There’s No Business Like Show Business'. I am sitting below the rehersal of Irving Berlin's classic musical Annie Get Your Gun. It’s a major new six month UK tour of the Tony award-winning show – from the producers of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and West Side Story – based on the true story of Annie Oakley, an incredible sharpshooter who engages in a competitive romance with rival marksman, Frank Butler. Both work for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Circus named for the American soldier, bison hunter and showman - hence the song. This production of Annie Get Your Gun is presented as a ‘show within a show’ with the centre of the stage as the Circus Big Top where the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show takes place, while the rest of the play unfolds on the regular stage. Director Ian Talbot OBE says, ‘It’s also got the most wonderful score with one hit after another. Incredible to think that Annie was a real person, so ahead of her time.’ Annie, who sings 'Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better', was a 19th Century protofeminist and is played by the appropriately gutsy Emma Williams. ‘Emma’s got all the right qualities to play the role of Annie Oakley. She’s feisty and has a voice to die for. She’s so conscientious she’s gone off and had trapeze lessons to give her a head start. It’s a hugely demanding role’ says Talbot. Frank Butler is played by Jason Donovan. ‘The characters have a special chemistry,’

WE BECAME their smokescreen...IT SEEMED like there was NO FUTURE

IT’S AN INCREDIBLE MUSICAL

with some really

GREAT SONGS

Emma says. ‘We have been having an absolute blast. I have an array of weaponry in the show – rifles, pistols and I’m having a whale of a time playing with them. I don’t know if I’d trust myself with any real ammo.’ Emma is very excited to be working with Jason. ‘On the first day of rehearsals we were doing a song from the show called 'They Say That Falling In Love Is Wonderful'. It’s a duet. There’s this amazing swell in the music, then the director said, “This is where you kiss.” He kissed me. Bear in mind I have known him for four hours at this point and I am thinking, “Jason Donovan is kissing me.” I was supposed to

17 Wim_Sep_GLEAM.indd 17

come back in but I forgot what I was supposed to say.’ Jason Donovan looks fit and relaxed, his eyes glinting. He is now a musical theatre veteran, from runs of Joseph to Priscilla [Queen of the Dessert]. He describes the show as ‘a love story’ and says that ‘it’s all about opposites. Annie and Frank are complete opposite people; the tables turn and they end up falling in love, and he ends up becoming a bit of a puppy dog after her. But initially he’s a very confident character.’ Annie Get Your Gun ranks among the classic musicals and Jason is keen to point out the timeless appeal of Irving Berlin’s writing. ‘It’s an incredible musical with some really great songs.' Interestingly enough, Jason hasn’t seen the original 1950’s Hollywood movie that was based on the successful Broadway production. ‘I try and avoid watching any of those things before I do a show,' he admits. ‘It moulds a particular image of how something should be in your head, and as an actor, you want to make a part your own.’ The clever casting of Emma and Jason means that the actors are closer to the age of the characters that they are playing and help to bring the show up to date for a modern audience. Norman Pace, of the 80s comedy duo, Hale and Pace, plays Buffalo Bill, the war hero of the Wild West. Talbot describes him as an absolute perfectionist, despite Pace claiming his biggest contribution to the show is the fact he actually grew a beard. ◆ Annie Get Your Gun starts a six month tour on 16th May at the Opera House in Manchester before coming to Wimbledon, 9 - 13 September. PRINT POWER Absolutely discovers the latest addition to Battersea’s arts and crafts scene: Lavender Print School Wo r d s G e o r g i e L a n e - G o d f r e y

W

hen you look at Battersea Business Centre, with its unwelcoming blue metal stake fence and old warehouse walls, it’s hard to believe that there’s anything more than a sterile structure of offices within. Yet tucked away in this stretch of Lavender Hill is a budding arts and crafts scene. Alongside Lavender Leonardos Art School and The Old School Club (teaching textiles and other crafts), the recently opened Lavender Print School has made this part of Battersea a hotspot for those looking to cultivate their artistic talents. Small and welcoming, Lavender Print School is run by the charismatic Izzy and her army of print makers, all qualified in print making from top design schools. Offering a range of workshops in relief printing, intaglio (or etching) and book binding, the school caters for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced print makers and provides all of the materials you might need. While the workshops have proved popular with hen parties and birthdays, the classes are not just for adults. Children are also catered for, with dedicated print workshops running after school, at the weekend and during school holidays. Meanwhile, special ‘Family Workshops’ run in conjunction with Lavender Leonardos Art School, uniting people of different generations and inspiring them to learn a craft. The workshops are tailored to the family’s needs so that they engage with all age groups. Printing may seem advanced for kids, but you only have to look at the artworks - created by young talent and resident teachers - hanging on the walls around the studio to see that it isn't. Artistic ability isn’t a prerequisite either. The teachers are on hand to provide inspiration, along with plenty of ‘how to draw’ books from which motifs can be traced. Beginners usually start with lino printing, a relatively foolproof method in

form of printing. The school has plenty of colourful etchings covering the walls of the studio as examples of the kind of thing you will create. Also known as intaglio, etching is the method of engraving an image into a plate using a sharp object. The ink is then applied to the plate and sinks down into the incisions; paper is then applied using pressure, leaving the printed inked image. Detailed and textured, it’s a very different effect to the bold, blockish images produced by relief printing and requires a more delicate touch. Two hour evening classes at Lavender Print School are supplemented with a glass of wine, to get your creative juices flowing. And that isn’t even the best part: you take away your own unique work of art after every session. ◆

which an image is carved out of lino and the protruding surface inked, applied to paper and passed through the press. The carved image then appears in white against a brightly coloured background. Simple yet effective, you leave with your own handmade print and all the skills and knowledge needed to pursue your newly acquired artistic interests. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can then move on to other relief printing methods like collography, before progressing to etching. Often materials such as leaves are used in collography, which get pressed against the printing board. Etching, on the other hand, is a more intricate

KNITWEAR Chanel to Westwood

CONFIDENTIAL Sculptural shoes, understated style and knitwear

Shop SPOTLIGHT

new exhibition of 20th century arrives at the Fashion A knitwear and Textile Museum this month. A major retrospective encompassing 1920s Chanel jersey pieces, vintage woollen swimwear, 1950s cocktail sweaters and 1960s crochet. As well as the work of key designers; visitors will be able to explore the influence which art movements such as Pop, Punk and Deconstruction had on fashion design and learn about significant new technologies in hand, machine and industrial knitting. The exhibition also traces Chanel’s introduction of jersey into its repertoire a more ahead of its time. Daytime dresses and evening gowns feature inspired by the cosmopolitan cultures of New York, Paris and London. The knitwear fashions of the 70s, 80s and 90s are also comprehensively covered. The 1970s were a fertile era in fashion design and Ossie Clark, Biba, Rae Spencer Cullen for Miss Mouse, Bill Gibb and Mary Quant all used knitted fabrics to great effect, paving the way for the names that exploded onto the scene in the 1980s – Vivienne Westwood, Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons, Zandra Rhodes and Sonia Rykiel, all of whom created innovative knitwear collections..u

GIRL ABOUT TOWN

With a Greatest Hits album about to drop, Absolutely catches up with The Saturdays’ Mollie King to talk

Wandsworth and fame

Interview by Shaun Curran

ABSOLUTELY: Let’s talk about the Greatest Hits album first - it must be quite exciting to be releasing a careerspanning collection? MOLLIE KING: Definitely, it is so exciting to be putting it out. The Saturdays have been together for seven years now, we’ve had 17 singles and we feel like we’ve reached a point where we can celebrate everything that we’ve done. I can’t wait for people to hear the album.

ABS: You were in a band before The Saturdays - why have The Saturdays been so successful when lots of girl groups, like your previous band [Fallen Angelz], just fall away? MK: I think it’s about the fact that as a five piece we work really well together. We understand each other, there are never really any big arguments and we all have the same drive and passion. I think it makes it easier to do something well if you all have got your heads in the same place.

ABS: Did you ever think when you joined The Saturdays that you would reach a point where you could release a Greatest Hits? MK: It is absolute madness! It is something I have dreamt of from the age of six. It’s really hard for people to make it these days and it’s hard for people to have longevity. We’ve worked really hard as a team to stay together and put out the best songs. It’s such an achievement for us and we’re all really proud we’ve lasted this long.

ABS: How has your music changed since your first single? MK: At the beginning we were definitely just straight pop, but more recently we’ve definitely become more dance-y. We’ve been working with people like Sean Paul and Flo Rider so we’ve kept our fan base by being really diverse. We can do pop or electro dance, so it’s about knowing what the fans want and moving along with the times.

FASHION / PROFILE ABS: Where do you see your interest in fashion going long-term? MK: Well I have this collection with Oasis where I have picked my favourite clothes, but I would like to learn more about behind the scenes and how the pieces are made. I’d like to start at the bottom and learn all about it. But that will take a few years, especially in The Saturdays, it’ll be hard to juggle both of them. But hopefully, there’s a lot for me to do in that industry.

ABS: How do you think you have changed personally since The Saturdays began? MK: I think overall I am still the same. It’s really difficult. I think I have learned a lot. When I joined the band, I’d only just turned 20, so if we are talking about where I was then compared to where I am now, I think I am a lot more grown up. I think I still have the same qualities. I still worry about everything. I am a massive worrier and I overthink everything. But I’ve really grown up as a performer. I couldn’t think of a better place to have grown up, with these girls and doing this job.

ABS: I want to ask you about growing up in Wandsworth… MK: I really love south London. As a youngster I spent so much time around Wandsworth, Putney, Richmond - all of those south London areas. They’re so close to London without being right in it and I’ve got such happy memories of growing up there. I love the area it’s brilliant.

ABS: Was it difficult to grow up in the public eye at such a young age? MK: I think the thing that works for us is that none of us have got carried away with being in the spotlight and it hasn’t gone to our heads and that is partly because being a five piece band if one of us suddenly thought we were God’s gift they’d get taken down a peg or two. We’ve all managed to stay really grounded, which is really important. ABS: It’s quite unusual there haven’t been any line-up changes in The Saturdays…. MK: Yeah, we’ve never had a point where somebody wanted to leave or somebody wanted to walk out. We’ve always wanted to keep doing this, and I think you can tell by how well we get on. I think by doing the TV show, people saw that we really do get on and that it isn’t all some big act. I guess we’re lucky that our personalities click. ABS: That’s the thing with The Saturdays, you’ve been able to get involved with lots of other stuff besides the music, like the TV show and your fashion work with Oasis. MK: Absolutely. And I think that is another reason why we have lasted so

NONE OF US HAVE

got carried away

WITH BEING IN THE

spotlight...it hasn't gone TO OUR HEADS

long, nobody minds anyone doing other things, we don’t resent anyone doing things on the side. I have done the collection with Oasis and Rochelle has been doing some TV work and it’s nice to have these things. It means you really look forward to being in the band and you don’t start resenting it. I love the fashion and definitely want to get more into that as time goes on.

ABS: What did you get up to when you were growing up? Were you going to local singing and dancing clubs and so on? MK: Well, actually until I was 17 I was on the British Ski team, so I was always skiing and always travelling, but I always wanted to sing and it was just when I got onto the British team that I realised that I wanted to sing. My parents thought I was crazy for giving up the skiing! I’m lucky and grateful that it all worked out, but I spent most of my time skiing and training for that. But when home we’d spend all our days in the parks, or maybe shopping, or just hanging out at friends' houses. Because I was so busy skiing, being back home was really a time for relaxing and doing as little as possible, rather than going crazy. I guess the thing with London is that there’s always something to do if you’re looking for it, and if you want to take it easy and just let the world float past you, you can. ◆

ABS: How do you find the fashion industry compared to the music industry? MK: It’s different – I thought they would be more similar than they are. Both of the industries are quite cutthroat and very competitive. All industries are which is something I am learning to deal with as I go along.

I

dentity is key to the success of any designer. Chanel evokes visions of elegant monochrome suits, whilst garish and vibrant attire comes to mind for Versace. Calvin Klein on the other hand, will always remind me of Gwyneth Paltrow in the nineties. Each brand promotes something different and inimitable, and it was this I thought of as I walked down Davies Street to the Vivienne Westwood Boutique. What is Dame Vivienne’s USP? Helena Bonham-Carter and Dita von Teese come to mind, along with Dame Vivienne herself; tangerine-coiffed, commanding the attention of everyone around her. All of these women are considered ‘eccentric’ and I wonder if that is what sets the Vivienne Westwood brand apart? And if that is the case, what are the women commission wedding dresses from

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

B&C_Sep_Behind_Scenes.indd 38

THE SIGHT of so

many white dresses... IS A LITTLE TOO

much for me

the luxury British label like? As I am welcomed into the shop, the enormous chandelier and sumptuous ottomans do nothing to dispel the ideas of eccentricity, and I am later informed that Dame Vivienne had a lot of input in the interior design, styling it to look like the backstage of an elaborate theatre. The shop has been in situ since 1991 and although Dame Vivienne’s famous first shop was located in World’s End, Chelsea, this was actually the first to bear her name. "The decor has pretty much remained the same," says Jenny, the store manager, who herself is decked out in full Vivienne Westwood gear including what she refers to as her ‘bondage boots’. With her is Jessica, the press officer for the fashion label, who gestures to the kaleidoscopic racks of beautiful clothes and adds, "up here is where we keep the Paris Catwalk Collection and the Red Carpet Collection, our ‘off-the-pegcouture’. Only Selfridges and Matches stock this. It’s quite an exclusive range." I look around, wide-eyed, wishing I had an infinite amount of time and money as I would try, and probably buy it all. I wasn’t there to just ogle dresses; I

had come to the boutique to experience what a couture appointment at Vivienne Westwood is like. Jenny and Jessica lead me downstairs, and I let out an uncontrollable gasp. It's the sight of so many beautiful white dresses, including a particularly majestic number on the mannequin, that is all a little too much for me. "All of these dresses are just samples," Jenny informs me. "Anything can be made in any colour, any fabric, anything you want, for any event." Regaining my composure, I ask what it would be like if I came in wanting a couture Vivienne Westwood bridal gown."‘You ring up and make an appointment. For the meeting we would bring you down here to look through the book," Jenny gestures to a large lookbook lying open on a coffee table. "On an iPad, we would go through the styles. I would then ask you about the event, the

38 05/08/2014 10:59

FASHION / BEHIND THE SCENES venue, whether you want something with sleeves, something dramatic, something slinky..." Jessica tells me they currently have several international clients who have specific cultural requirements, and make it their job to ensure these are take care of. The next stage is trying on a couple of different dress styles: an essential part of the experience. "Westwood dresses need a body in them," exclaims Jenny. It is Jenny’s job to advise people based on their body shape and personal preferences. Customers will then have chosen the basic silhouette of the dress. Then things get serious. Couturiers from the studio come to the boutique to take the bride-to-be’s measurements and discuss any changes they wish to make to the initial design. Whether it is lengthening a train, attaching a different corset or some extra embroidery, they will do pretty much anything to ensure the dress is the bride-to-be's dream dress. "Really the world is your oyster," Jenny smiles mischievously. "It just depends how much money you have." We have a good laugh, and mine turns Machiavellian as I mentally scroll through the chaps I’d have to marry to acquire a top-end £90,000 design. But the bespoke element doesn’t end with style. Fabrics also open up a whole realm of possibilities as several people opt out of ‘traditional white’ and go for something more striking. Dita von Teese, for example, wore a deep purple Vivienne Westwood gown when she married Marilyn Manson. Measurements are then applied to the pattern to create a calico version of the dress. I am pleased to hear this is done whilst the bride stands on top of a little platform as it affirms my lifelong idea of what a wedding dress fitting would entail. A couple of calicos can be made, depending on the complexity of the dress, and once the dress is cut in the final fabric, there are one or two more fittings. Altogether, finding, fitting and buying the dress can take up to three or four months. With this in mind, and having examined several of the dresses, I decide to indulge my imagination and ask Jenny to model some of them for me. It’s like dressing up my daughter, I think, as I can’t stop myself from cooing like a proud mother as she models them. Jenny is right, once she puts a dress on, it is transformed. She tells me, laughing, she often gets invited to the weddings of the brides she dresses. Her favourite was a steampunk wedding where the bride

wore purple, with a burnt orange stripe; a gown the bride pulled off brilliantly. As I leave, having thanked both Jenny and Jessica, I start thinking again about Vivienne Westwood and what makes her brand so unique. There is no doubt that many of those who favour her vivid colours and dramatic styles are often considered courageous and fashion forward. But after seeing the dresses up close – observed the craftsmanship, commitment taken to ensure each

39 B&C_Sep_Behind_Scenes.indd 39

customers gets what they want and the sheer luxuriousness of them – and after having heard about the sorts of brides that buy them, I am led to a different conclusion. It isn’t so much that the designs are eccentric; it’s the people, with their individual tastes and personalities, that transform each dress into something much more interesting. ◆ 6 Davies Street, W1K, 020 7629 3757; viviennewestwood.co.uk

INTERVIEW

GOWNS, GLORIOUS GOWNS Womenswear designer Zaeem Jamal on luxury, lifestyle and Swarovski crystals I n t e r v i e w a b s o l u t e ly

ABSOLUTELY How did you get into design? ZAEEM JAMAL It was a natural progression. I am the third generation of my family working in the textile business – both my grandfathers started in the industry. Growing up learning about fabrics, craftsmanship and quality during the vibrant fashion-centric 80s in London definitely helped shape my interest in fashion. ABS You studied at the London School of Economics and also the London College of Fashion. How has this helped your commercially? ZJ I have always enjoyed both sides of the spectrum. I followed both the Arts and Sciences, so it was a natural progression rather than a strategic move. As the creative side of things came so easily to me, I felt it was important to understand the machinations of business and finance. So after school I studied at LSE before plunging into the world of creativity and design. Summer schooling at LCF during university helped fine-tune some of the skills, but the creative side of fashion was really always an innate part of me. ABSOLUTELY You launched the Z for Z label and then Zaeem Jamal, your eponymous line, in 2009. How do the two brands differ?

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

B&C_Sep_Zaeem_Jamal.indd 40

ZJ When I first began establishing my own label, I explored all aspects of the luxury world. Everywhere I could see the desire for beauty, empowerment, style and innovation. Why wear less than the best? My mission is to create excellent clothes for people to experience and wear wherever they want to look and feel amazing. Lifestyle is as important an issue to me as luxury. I am creating an experience of luxury in the Z for Z brand and wearability in the Zaeem Jamal brand, so the two brands work in an interesting synergy. ABSOLUTELY Your first collection won ‘Best New Designer of the Year’ at Dubai Fashion Week – that must have been pretty amazing… ZJ Dubai is an exciting city and really encourages innovation. After designing the first collection inspired by the Seven Sins, we were invited to preview it in Dubai and received so much attention that the organisers of Fashion Week asked us to participate. To then win Best New Designer was, of course, a great honour. ABSOLUTELY You describesyour brand as ‘design alchemy in motion’ – what does this mean? ZJ ‘Alchemy’ essentially refers to a process – it is a journey of transformation

FASHION / PROFILE – the creation of the best and highest form. In a physical sense, each piece is transformed when all of our signature elements, including expert artistic handcraftsmanship, specially dyed colours, intricate embroidery and drapery, are combined. ABSOLUTELY Is there a particular ZJ dress you would single out as your favourite? ZJ Each collection and each dress is special in its own way, so it would be like asking a parent to choose a favourite child! ABSOLUTELY Where are your gowns made? ZJ In our own atelier, by incredibly talented master craftsmen in each section of the dressmaking process: – from pattern masters and tailors, through to our embroiderers using age-old traditions which began in India. ABSOLUTELY Where are your fabrics, gems and leather sourced? ZJ Our ‘sourcing with integrity’ policy is a strong element in everything we use. Our leathers, for example, used in our handbags and shoes are carefully researched during development meaning we only select leather from herds that have been reared with care. The gems are currently sourced from specific crystal partners in the UK from a variety of locations around the world, whilst our pure silk fabrics (including very fine chiffons) are mostly sourced in India. ABSOLUTELY You’ve recently introduced a shoe collection – what led you branch out into accessories? ZJ Beautiful shoes often have a reputation for being ‘uncomfortable’ which I was determined to turn around. Working with master shoemakers in Florence, we added careful padding and specially researched angles and arches to create a shoe that is functional and graceful. ABSOLUTELY You also do bespoke designs – what has been your most complicated/ outrageous commission so far? ZJ An incredibly special two piece corset and skirt with over 15,000 Swarovski crystals incorporating literally thousands of hours of hand craftsmanship!

ZJ Yes, we have clients of all sizes as we have a wide array of options and silhouettes. Our in-store sales staff are experienced at spotting the right style for the right shape, and giving honest advise, and in our London store, we have an inhouse tailor who can make alternations.

ABSOLUTELY What's the best thing about living in Wimbledon? ZJ Having been born and raised in Wimbledon Village, I enjoy the peace and serenity of being by the common and then the buzz during the fortnight when the tennis comes to town.

ABSOLUTELY Do your designs fit women of all sizes? Which designs work best for curvier women?

ABSOLUTELY What was the inspiration for your AutumnWinter '14 collection? ZJ AW continues the journey of Camelot from SS – an elegant, graceful and magical collection inspired by the legends of King Arthur and the quest for the grail. The coming season features rich colours inspired by the coastline at Tintagel, the legendary birthplace of Arthur. Burgundies, warm golds, deep emerald, sea greens and dark charcoals are just some of the enchanting colours inspired by the winter coastline.

ABSOLUTELY What’s next for Zaeem Jamal? ZJ We have had an overwhelming response to the preview of our Bridal collection and this autumn we will also be releasing a wider selection of inspiring gowns at various fairs across the country. Preparations are also underway for the launch of our 2015 collection which is inspired by another great civilisation: this time, from across the waters… ◆

Put down that Magnum, which contains 280 calories and a 28g of fat – almost a third of your recommended daily fat intake, and that 164 calorie ‘99’ flake and try one of the below. First on the list is Eighties favourite, the mini milk. At only 31 calories and available in vanilla, strawberry or chocolate, these small sticks are perfect alternative to ice cream. Del Monte’s 100% juice ice lollies are an excellent refresher, containing no artificial sugar or fat, and are a mere 73 calories. Another childhood classic is a fab ice lolly. Thaw the fruit in a microwave for 1 minutes, then add it to a bowl. Mix in the yoghurt and sugar and whizz in a blender until smooth. GET STRAIGHT TEETH INVISIBLY Everything you need to know about Lingual Braces

ingual braces provide an effective way of straightening B your teeth without that mouth full of unsightly metal. A perfect smile isn’t only about pearl white teeth. Most of us have little imperfections that can be straightened up by a dental brace. And a nice smile can go a long way to making you feel confident. Celebrities know it. You don’t often see someone on television nowadays who doesn’t have nice, well-aligned teeth.

WHAT ARE LINGUAL BRACES? Lingual braces offer a totally invisible solution and can treat severe cases very quickly. If you don’t want to suffer a mouth of wires, a Lingual brace could provide the answer. It operates as any normal brace to slowly move your teeth into line over several months but because it fits behind the teeth and is largely hidden from view, you don’t have to worry about being embarrassed by a mouth full of metal. The brace will be invisible.

HOW CAN YOU GET LINGUAL BRACES? You first need to book a free consultation at our clinic in Putney, London. After receiving your individual quote and choosing your ideal payment plan, a dentist will perform a dental check-up to insure your teeth and gums are healthy. He will then take impressions of your teeth which will be sent to a laboratory where customised brackets for each tooth will be made. On your second visit to the

clinic, the dentist will cement the brace to the back of your teeth and then attach arch wires which will provide the gentle tension that, over time, will ease your teeth into place.

ARE LINGUAL BRACES PAINFUL? Having something fitted into your mouth will always cause a change in the way you speak. Some find it gives them a slight lisp or that they struggle with particular words. This is simply a matter of adjusting to the brace and learning how to speak properly with it in.

HOW OFTEN WILL YOU NEED TO VISIT THE DENTIST? You will need to visit your dentist every 3 - 6 weeks for adjustments. At ILoveStraightTeeth, we

understand that you might have a busy schedule, so we offer late evenings and weekend appointments. The brace is attached to the back of your teeth and food can get trapped that you might miss with normal brushing. Making regular appointments with your dentist or hygienist can help keep you on top of your oral hygiene. ◆ To book your free consultation with our London clinic to see if you are suitable and learn more about this revolutionary treatment call our friendly team on 020 3322 812. 226a Upper Richmond Road, Putney, SW15 6TG; ilovestraightteeth.co.uk

IN THIS MOMENT Taken from her enlightening new book, Mindful London, Balham local Tessa Watt reveals a world of calm in the chaos of London. Illustration Bret t Ryder

I

f your mind was a city, which city would it be? Would it be laid out in a neat grid like Manhattan or Toronto? Elegant and airy like Paris? A simple village with green fields? Or chaotic, noisy, eccentric, unpredictable, crowded – by turns inspiring and infuriating. Like London? London is an impossible city. Look at it from above, say from the top of the London Eye, and it makes no sense. A mish-mash of buildings from every period, a wiggly, curving river, randomly angled streets, no easy way to tell ‘north’ from ‘south’. Mindfulness starts from recognising that our minds are a bit like this hectic crazy city. Our minds are surprisingly random, and very full. Full of worries, stories, images, clever ideas, half-finished conversations, shopping lists, fantasies and fears. The thoughts get clogged up like traffic at a roundabout, or doubledecker buses coming along all at once. We might feel sometimes that we would like to clear them all away, and get back to the thatched village with the green fields.

MINDFULNESS

gives us a way to

RECOGNISE WHEN

we get stuck on

AUTOPILOT ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

B&C_Sep_Mindfull_London.indd 52

So will mindfulness provide us with this sense of calm and simplicity? The answer is both yes and no. Yes, mindfulness can help us to slow down, relax, and reconnect with the simple experience of being alive, but not by bulldozing everything away. Rather, we can just stop, right here, right in the middle of the busyness, and breathe, and notice. We can sit down for a moment on a bench – real or metaphorical – and for a few moments watch the world go by. If we do it often enough we will create a sense of space within the chaos, and be able to take delight in the creative energy of the city – the big city outside and the internal city of our own minds.

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

It sounds very simple: paying attention, in this moment; being awake and aware. This is a basic human skill, there is nothing mystical or complicated about it. Yet for some reason we find this so difficult to do. If we look closely at our own minds, we will probably see that we spend a lot of time in a mental fog. London used to be renowned for the thick, heavy fogs that enveloped the city, created by the smoke from millions of chimneys. Now, our air is much clearer, but still we may find ourselves walking around in a fog of our own devising, hardly noticing what is here in front of our noses. We go into ‘autopilot’ mode, eating our breakfast without tasting it, walking to the Tube without noticing

the sky or the buildings or our fellow Londoners as we go on our way. The problem with being on autopilot is that it takes us into well-worn grooves in our mind, which are often negative ones. A small event can trigger a train of rumination which ends up in irritation, anxiety or depression. Maybe our friend doesn’t return a text and it sets us off – almost without us noticing – into thinking that they don’t care about us, and they never cared about us, and no one cares about us. Before we know it we’re in a black mood, without knowing how we got there. Or maybe there’s a delay on the Underground and within a few minutes this inconvenience has turned into a drama about how our whole life is miserable and worthless. Mindfulness gives us a way to recognise when we get stuck on autopilot, and to step out into the freshness of the present moment. Then, we can appreciate the richness of the world and all the little experiences that make up our everyday life. Luckily,

52 05/08/2014 11:33

HEALTH & BEAUTY / SPOTLIGHT

this ability to be present is something that people over the centuries have discovered can be trained – a bit like strengthening a muscle. So we have mindfulness techniques in which we deliberately practise bringing our attention back, again and again, to a particular focus which is here in our present experience – for example the breath, the body, sounds, the environment. Traditionally the term ‘meditation’ has been used to describe these practices of mental training; I will also refer to meditation in this book, however, it’s good to be aware that some forms of meditation have somewhat different purposes from those we are exploring here, such as cultivating altered states of consciousness, or connecting with the divine. In this book we are talking about meditation as a simple and basic act of training the mind to be more present and aware, which is not tied to any religion or set of beliefs. In addition to formal meditation practice, we can also bring mindfulness more informally into the activities of daily life, such as walking, brushing our teeth, making a cup of tea, or simply pausing to notice what is here. When we wash the dishes, instead of resenting every minute of it, we can enjoy the warm soapy water, the shine of the plates, the satisfaction of getting the dishes clean. At any moment we can drop our mental chatter and discover appreciation for simple experiences, bringing wakefulness and a greater sense of contentment into our lives.

BRINGING AWARENESS TO THE BREATH

The breath is probably the oldest and most common focus for mindfulness. When you feel your breath you are connecting with the basic feeling of being alive. In every moment you are breathing,

most of the time without noticing, so it’s a natural tool for bringing yourself back to the present moment. When you tune in to your breathing, your body and mind are in synch: the breath is a bridge between the two. Whenever you get caught up in a maelstrom of thoughts, you can let them go and come back to the cool breeze of the breath. The more you become familiar with the breath, the more it becomes a haven for your awareness – something you can trust. Here you are, with this breath, now. ◆

alking into Gina Conway’s salon Wimbledon took me by W in surprise. It wasn't a hubbub of hairdryers, thumping music and raised voices; rather a peaceful oasis of pampering. As with all Aveda salons; the emphasis here is on wellbeing. All treatments begin with a complimentary head, neck and shoulder massage using your choice of essential oils. There’s also a spa upstairs offering everything from facials to threading. I was here to try out a colour treatment, which began with a consultation. I rarely colour my hair, but my stylist Nic was patient, attentive and listened to my concerns. He suggested several looks to suit my style and we ended up agreeing on balayage: combing caramel through the ends of my brunette locks for a sunkissed look. The best thing about Aveda permanent colour is that it’s made from 97% natural ingredients, which means your hair isn’t massacred during the treatment. Sunflower, castor and jojoba oils are contained within all of the dyes, which protect and condition the hair. My colour set, it was off for a quick wash (with head massage) followed by a trim to remove my split ends. One speedy blow-dry later and my hair looked healthier than it had done in months. Glossy and soft; the natural sun-kissed highlights made it look like I had just got back from the med. And with all that additional pampering, I felt like I had. ◆

How did it all start? I launched [the brand] with Christina Stewart, a fellow cosmetic scientist, in 1973 in Belgravia. We were both frustrated with the beauty industry and wanted to offer people more choice, control, personal advice and product testing.

A La Carte has just celebrated its 40th anniversary; how does it feel to have got this far? I am pleased to have survived the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’ and proud to have influenced the way makeup is sold in the 21st century.

Sum up A La Carte in three words? British. Quality. Integrity.

How has the brand developed? As cosmetic scientists we read, hear about and test raw materials, all while exploring new technology. We always aim to take a different approach to making our products.

If you could only use one product for the rest of your life, which one would it be? It would be a multitasking concealer and base, with skin-care benefits to soften shadows that make me look weary. What’s next for A La Carte? We are focusing on expansion in 2015 and have products going into Fortnum and Mason next Spring. We are also expanding our boutique menu to include brows, lashes and nails. ◆

or me, Carnival is all about beauty. It’s a riotous celebration of life, and it’s hard not to be inspired by the outre costumes and the bonkers makeup.Anything goes – there are no rules at Carnival time. My advice is to keep it cheap. There are some amazing colours and pigments available on the high street. I love this Revlon eye quad. It’s long-wear too, crucial for surviving heat/rain/late nights. Use the darker colours close to the lash line then blend in the yellow and purple on your lids and up to your brows. Use a wet brush for even more intense colour. Glitter,

sparkles and bling are essential. Pat a little vaseline onto the tops of your cheekbones or eyelids then press this Topshop glitter into the area. More is definitely more and don’t be too precise, but keep it off the centre of your face. One place I won’t scrimp is on my mascara, and full-on carnival eyes require blacker than black lashes. The YSL Baby Doll mascara is the glossiest, blackest one around. Layer it on thick, let it dry, then go again for super volume with just a hint of clumping. Worth spending money on too is a great blusher. The cheaper ones never seem to blend as well. This NARS blush looks extreme but is delicate when used with a light touch, and surprisingly flattering. u

ME T HO D 01 Wash the berries in a colander. Tip them into a large preserving pan. 02 Peel and finely chop the onions and garlic. Chop the chilli. 03 Grind the seeds, berries and peppercorns finely, using a spice mill or a mortar and pestle. 04 Put everything but the sugar into the pan with the blackberries. Place this over a moderate heat, and bring the mixture up to a simmer. 05 Cover with the lid and cook gently for 30–40 minutes, until everything is soft. Remember to stir from time to time. 06 Remove from the heat and allow to sit for 5 minutes, as blending the hot mixture can be explosive. 07 Once the ketchup has cooled, spoon it into the blender and whizz until smooth. 08 Sieve the ketchup to remove any unwanted lumps and skins. Place a sieve over a glass bowl and, using a wooden spoon, rub the mixture through the sieve until you have a dry residue left. Discard this. 09 Place some clean jars and their lids on a baking tray and into a preheated oven at 100C/200F/ Gas 2 for 20 minutes. 10 Return the ketchup to the washed saucepan and add the sugar. 11 Put the pan over a low heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved. 12 Simmer the ketchup over a medium heat until thick. 13 Once it is as thick as you wish, remove the ketchup from the heat and allow it to stand for 5 minutes. Take the baking tray of bottles/jars from the oven. 14 Pour the ketchup into the hot jars using a funnel, and leave a headspace of 1cm at the top. 15 Screw the lids on loosely and allow to cool. 16 When cold; label the jars, tighten the lids and store in a cool, dark place or in the fridge. ◆

BERGAMOT JELLY Yi el d a p p rox : 1.4 k g Ke e p s : 6 m o n t h s he bergamot orange is a wonderfully fragrant citrus fruit that comes from Calabria in Italy. Bergamots are relatively new to the shops in the UK, but look out for them, they add quite delicious floral notes to your cooking. You may have tasted them in Earl Grey tea, bergamot oil from the rind adding the citrus note to this smoky blend. I used my bergamots, adding Amalfi lemons, to make a

T

lovely quivering pale lemon jelly that would be as good on crusty white bread as on sourdough toast. Once the juice is back in the pan and the sugar has dissolved, you will find you need to cook this jelly for only 2–3 minutes to reach a set, so have everything ready before you start the final phase of cooking. IN G RE DI E N TS • 2 bergamot oranges • 2 large Amalfi lemons • 1 litre water • 1kg white granulated sugar M E T HO D 01 Scrub the fruit well in hot water first, and then chop roughly. 02 Put the chopped fruit into a food processor and whizz until finely chopped. 03 Scrape the fruit into a large heavy bottomed, non-reactive pan

and pour in the water. 04 Put the pan over a medium heat, cover with a lid and bring to the boil. Simmer for 30 minutes. 05 Set up your jelly bag in a place where it can remain undisturbed, placing a large bowl underneath. Take the pan and set it close to the bag. Using a ladle spoon the mixture from the pan into the bag. 06 Leave the bag alone, allowing the mixture to drip through for 10–12 hours. Do not squeeze the bag or your jelly will be cloudy. 07 Put some clean jam jars and lids on a baking tray and then into the oven preheated to 100C/200F/Gas 2 for 20 minutes. Place two to three small plates or saucers in the freezer to chill. 08 Measure the juice in the bowl: you should have about a litre. If not, add enough water to bring it up to a litre. 09 Pour this into the washed preserving pan. Add the sugar and stir over a low heat until the sugar has fully dissolved. There should be no trace of grittiness in the pan or on the back of the spoon. 10 Now bring the mixture up to the boil. Cook the jelly at a full rolling boil, one that can’t be stirred down with the spoon, for 2 minutes only. 11 Turn off the heat and make your first test for a set. Take a cold plate or saucer from the freezer and spoon on a little jelly. Leave for a minute and then gently push the edge of the mixture. If the surface wrinkles the jelly is ready. 12 If the jelly is still runny, return the pan to the heat and cook for a further 2 minutes before testing again. Always turn off the heat while testing for a set. 13 Once you are happy the jelly will set, turn off the heat and skim off any scum with a slotted spoon, rinsing it in a bowl of hot water between skims. 14 Now leave the jelly to cool for 5 minutes. Take the baking tray of jars from the oven at the same time. 15 Pot the jelly into the hot jars. I use a jam funnel to help with this, but a ladle is fine. Top with the lids. 16 When the jars are cold, label them, and check the lids are firmly screwed on. Store in a cool, dark place. ◆

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW

SYLVAN OAK Absolutely discovers relaxed French dining in Earlsfield

S

W o r d s R O M Y VA N D E N B R O E K E

ylvan Oak, Earlsfield’s newest restaurant, brings refined French flare to a neighbourhood in need of a culinary zhoosh. The second branch of the restaurant – the original is an awardwinning eatery in Findon, West Sussex – takes a more creative approach to cooking. The menu, which changes daily, sticks to an overarching French theme while incorporating Asian and Middle Eastern notes. Owner Dave Marr chose the suburban location in order to replicate – as far as is possible so close to London – the villagefeel of the sister restaurant in Findon. As is the custom these days, we decided to share our plates to get a real

feel for the food. To start, we opted for the squid, which comes with gnocchi and chorizo, doused in a light drizzle of herb pesto, and seared scallops served on a bed of carrot purée and pulled pork. The squid was accomplished: delicate and complemented well by the punchy paprika of the chorizo. The second starter sounded good on paper, but was a bit too brave in reality. The sweet soy, mustard and star anise soaked pulled pork overpowered the scallops somewhat, but the dish was tasty nonetheless. For mains, we shared the wild stone bass on a bed of black truffle mash with green vegetables cooked in nage (a traditional broth made from white wine and herbs), and the Sussex fillet of beef. The fish was well cooked and all the

65 Food_Review.indd 65

accompanying elements were scrumptious. The highlight was the fillet steak; rare, tender and served with a creamy potato mousseline, wild mushrooms and a rich Bordelaise sauce. Yum. To finish we ordered the light mango cheesecake (it could have done with a deeper biscuit base) which came with mango sorbet and balsamic strawberries, vanilla panacotta with cracked black pepper and basil sherbet on the hand, was spot on. The only thing missing was the fizz that comes with central London, but that wouldn't stop us coming back again. ◆

GET A TASTE

Famed for its fantastic food, spotless shopping malls and super strict law enforcement, Singapore is the home of wellbehaved indulgence. Showcasing a fascinating blend of old and new, former colonial buildings sit alongside vertiginous modern skyscrapers whilst on the ground Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western cultures combine to make a richly diverse city-state.

Visit the ‘Supertree Grove’ of vertical forests, which harvest solar energy by day and provide a light show by night to accompany the ‘Garden Rhapsody’ – a performance of original music inspired by the rainforest.

WHAT TO SEE

WHERE TO EAT

Rather than tourist attractions, the thing to see here is the architecture. Singapore’s government has spent millions on reclaiming land from the sea in order to provide space for the country’s cutting edge developments, such as the Gardens by the

Meanwhile, for fine dining options, China Town’s award-winning Restaurant Andre offers artisanal French cuisine (restaurantandre.com) while Waku Ghin’s take on modern Japanese food is served in a sensational seasonal ten-course menu (marinabaysands.com). Avoid the tourist trap of the Singapore Sling at Raffles and instead try their high tea, served amongst the gently swaying palm trees of the Tiffin Room (raffles.com/singapore).

WHERE TO SHOP

What Singapore lacks in tourist sites, it makes up for in retail therapy. Here, the spotless shopping malls give a new meaning to ‘shop til you drop’, with many so big you could get lost for days inside. Orchard Road (orchardroad.org) is the original home of extravagant expenditure, with futuristic storefronts lining the streets, all packed with new colllections from luxury fashion brands. For more authentic wares, try the nearby Tanglin Shopping Centre (tanglinsc. com), which specialises in antique Asian art, homewares and jewellery. And for a more cultural experience, the Bugis Street Market (bugisstreet.com.sg), a former transgender sex bazaar, is now the largest undercover street market in Singapore.

WHERE TO STAY

While many head to Marina Bay Sands in search of jaw-dropping scenery, they’ve forgotten one crucial thing – this hotel’s architecture is one of the best elements of the Singaporean skyline. Introducing the Mandarin Oriental Singapore, whose location is arguably the best and most enviable

NATURAL WONDERS Ignore the hype surrounding the South Island. When it comes to New Zealand, the North Island is Mother Nature’s masterpiece Wo r d s G e o r g i e L a n e - G o d f r e y

eople told me that the only way to see the lake was from the air. But as the fl imsy plastic door of the plane rattled open, I shuffled myself to the edge, dangled my feet outside and all I felt was unadulterated fear. I'm sitting 15,000ft above Lake Taupo in New Zealand’s North Island, the skydiving capital of the country. Admittedly the view from this vantage point is breath-taking, but knowing that you are about to tumble out of a plane makes it difficult to appreciate. As you fall from the heavens over New Zealand’s largest lake; rolling green fields, sparkling waters, snow-capped mountains and dormant volcanoes are all you can see for miles. You don’t have to throw yourself out of a plane to appreciate New Zealand’s outstanding beauty. And you don’t have to make a beeline for South Island either. The North Island’s mountains are just as dramatic, the beaches just as idyllic and the wine just as good. But there’s also the added bonus of some of New Zealand’s unique natural wonders, from Rotarua to Waitomo Caves.

About a three hour drive from Auckland, the country’s cosmopolitan capital, the Coromandel Peninsula isn’t exactly a well kept secret – kiwis have been holidaying here for years – but the place has an almost undiscovered charm to it. TRAVEL / WANDERLUST scene, with many hotels, restaurants and bars doubling up as galleries. As a tourist, its hard to ignore the influence Peter Jackson’s The Lord of The Rings fi lms have had here. Every corner of the country seems to lay claim to the triology in one way or another, and countless kiwis brag of appearing as an extra in them, usually playing an orc or an elf depending on what kind of shape they’re in. Hardcore fans might enjoy

Tongariro National Park

Hobbiton in Matamata, discovering some of the stunning scenery that appeared in the films has more universal appeal. Often called the best day walk in New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is 19km of dynamic landscape, taking you in between two volcanoes, though barren desert and alongside fluorescent blue pools of water and steaming craters. The world’s largest volcanic explosion in 5000 years took place here in AD186, reducing the once forest clad Rangipo Desert to a desolate wasteland upon which no tree has grown for over 2000 years. The most recent was in August 2012, when Te Maari spat out tonnes of ash and rock to rain from the sky. No wonder then that it was chosen as the setting for Mordor - Tongariro has

an eerie, otherworldly feel to it which perfectly captures Tolkien’s sinister land. Meanwhile, the Waitomo Caves is another place where magic wouldn’t be amiss. A maze of subterranean passageways, abseiling adventures down here are called ‘The Lost World’ for a reason. Hidden beneath the lush farmland above, this tour takes you down into the caves via a 100m abseil through a narrow crack in the earth. Descending past the woodland canopy, where ribbons of sunlight stream through prehistoric ferns into the mists of the underground gorge, it’s easy to forget the lambs frolicking back up above. Here it’s dark, dank and spooky.

Tongariro National Park

But if you descend deeper into the shadows, you are rewarded for your efforts. Emerging into one of the bigger caverns, you’ll fi nd the rock awash with twinkling lights beaming down on you. These are glow-worms, hundreds and hundreds of them clustered together emitting their pretty phosphorus green glow. Turning off our headlamps, we lay back against the cold rock to admire the view, like stargazers stretching out under the night sky. Magical indeed, and not a hobbit in sight…  The four hour Lost World tour of Waitomo Caves costs from $340pp; waitomo.co.nz. newzealand.com.

We also love… ROTARUA

You’ll smell this place before you see it. A geothermal hotspot, Rotarua is unique, emitting a perpetual sulphuric stench. Despite this, the mineral-rich water pools, bubbling mud and exploding geysers are a thing to behold, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. waioraresort.co.nz

Turquoise waters, pods of orcas, playful dolphins – The Bay of Islands is postcard-perfect pretty. hat many people don’t realise about Sydney before going there is that it is an astoundingly beautiful city. There’s a reason why being harnessed in for a trek to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a tourist staple: the views rival those of any city in the world. But if you want to see it from a slightly safer vantage point, then head to Milsons Point Ferry Wharf at the base of the bridge or to Observatory Hill, which will give you the views without the vertigo. Aside from the architecture, Sydney has many beautiful parks and gardens. My personal favourite is the Royal Botanic Gardens (rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au) where the sheer abundance of natural life that Australia has to offer is much in evidence and where you can get an Aboriginal Heritage Tour for around $35. It is an incredibly interesting 1.5hour talk from an Aboriginal guide who will discuss the flora and fauna, as well as the impact that Western settlers had on the landscapes and indigenous population.

YOU’RE NOT SURE WHETHER

everything goes together...normal rules DON’T APPLY

There are a number of fantastic galleries, but for a taste of the raw, bubbling artistic talent of young Sydneyites, it’s worth checking what’s going on at Carriageworks (carriageworks.com.au). The multidisciplinary cultural centre is set in the old Eveleigh Rail Yards, heritage listed warehouse-style buildings formally used as railway workshops. Of course you can’t go to Sydney without spending some time on Bondi beach. If you’re up for a bit of activity, the coastal walk between Coogee and Bondi, a 5km jaunt that takes just over an hour if it’s done in one go, takes in some less populated, but equally beautiful beaches and coves. Take a picnic and make a day of it. ◆

WHERE TO STAY

O

pened in 2012, the QT is a ‘boutique’ design hotel with a quirky heart. I use the term ‘boutique’ loosely because actually there’s nothing particularly quaint or small about it. It is a big, blousy, in-your-face bolt-hole in the middle of Sydney’s CBD. Housed across two adjoining buildings (above the State Theatre and what used to be the Gowings Bros. department store which was built in 1912) the hotel’s design ethos lies somewhere between art deco, film noir and frantically modern. It is a treasure trove of luxe knickknacks and vintage objet d’art curated into a psychedelic funhouse for grown-ups. You’re not quite sure whether everything goes together, (miniature rhino, mid-mod chairs, multi-coloured fluff y cushions, all offset by the kind of solid wood finishing that you think is verging on wrong) but you’re soon made aware that normal rules don’t apply here. The experience begins on the pavement outside the (gilded) entrance on Market Street, one of Sydney’s busiest. You are welcomed by a host who is dressed like a sassy extra from

81 B&C_Aust_Syd_v2.indd 81

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (it is pure theatre). He or she will point you in the direction of the lift with the level of pep that will have you raising a smile despite the 24hour flight you’ve likely just endured. Directly inside, you’ll slope past the ground floor bar (the Parlour Lane Roasters Café) but promise yourself that you’ll stop as soon as you’ve sluiced off the haven’t-slept-in-two-days look. Once upstairs the attention to detail is astounding: take, for example, the ceramic white rabbits that are dotted

In the other direction is Surry Hills. I’m tempted to equate it to Shoreditch, in a rough-area-come-good kind of way, but it is less flashy than Shoreditch (read: better). Here you’ll find countless good cocktail and wine bars, as well as plenty of bright young things with whom to while away the warm nights. nspiration can be found in many places, from art galleries to the pages of your favourite magazine. For the founders of the stylish Kerbisher & Malt fish & chip shop chain inspiration came by way of the local chippie. In the same way that certain Byron burger joints would be likely to appear in the pages of an interior design magazine as they are in a good food guide, Kerbisher & Malt have raised the bar in terms of the modern British takeaway. Every restaurant worth its salt knows that a unique style is central to its brand thus, when Kerbisher & Malt opened its first restaurant in Brook Green in 2011, they took on the services of Alexander Waterworth Interiors, a young and ambitious design company founded by Alexander Evangelou and James Waterworth. The designers poured their shared experience, skills and passion into the project. In just three years, they've amassed a varied portfolio

is a new test and a

NEW CHALLENGE to create SOMETHING UNIQUE the Matisse exhibition at Tate Modern, he is someone that has always inspired me for how far ahead of his time he was and how he trusted his gut instinct. I believe that things often inspire us subconsciously. GB Who are some of your favourite interior designers? AE The late, great David Collins had an amazing eye for detail. You can see this in both his architectural and soft finishes within his spaces. The most attentive detail is applied throughout, from lighting and furniture to floor and wall details, you can clearly tell when David Collins had been in town. JW Axel Vervoordt, for me, has to be seen as one of the most inspirational designers of his generation. From his knowledge of contemporary art and antiques through to his defining style which has influenced so many designers over the years. I’ve had the good fortune of visiting both his offices and house just outside Antwerp – if you want inspiration, this place is it. We were also incredibly fortunate to work with a design legend, Martin Brudnizki, whose brilliance is evident in all the work he has done, such as Caprice Holdings' fish restaurant, Scott’s.

of residential and commercial clients in addition to Kerbisher & Malt, they're also responsible for the interior of establishment members club Annabel's and the Muskett Room in New York. I caught up with the pair to discuss inspiration, idols and London's hidden gems... GEMMA BILLINGTON Tell us about your backgrounds and why you decided to set up Alexander Waterworth Interiors? ALEXANDER EVANGELOU I started off studying product design. From an early age I was intrigued as to how things worked as well as how they looked. To my parents’ horror I was often found taking apart my toys just to see how they worked. Understanding a product’s function for me is essential; once you have the internals, the next step is to give it the love it deserves; its aesthetics. JAMES WATERWORTH My stepmother is an antiques dealer and so I was brought up

with beautiful things around me all the time. Initially I spent time working for an antiques dealer in London, followed by a stint in set design, but I always knew my heart was in interior design. After studying at KLC School of Design, I moved to Martin Brudnizki Design Studio where I went on to set up his office in New York. It was an amazing five years but my time had come and I needed a new challenge – setting up our own design company definitely is that challenge!

GB How would you describe your style? JW This question is often one of the first

GB Who or what inspires you? AE Seymour Powell (Richard Seymour & Dick Powell), a global product design company. I am often inspired by their limitless, forward thinking and intelligent approach to design and their ability to interpret each of their clients’ ideas and needs to create a product that remains true to the brand. JW Various things inspire me; travel, music, the arts and architecture. I recently visited

97 Kerbisher and Malt InteriorMain_02.indd 97

GB What would you say makes your company unique? AE James and I are very different in skill set and personality, this bodes well as projects come in all kinds of different forms. Our drive and love for interior design brings us together, pushing one another to achieve. It’s an amazing feeling to have a relationship which brings out the best in you.

GB What was the brief for the interiors of Kerbisher & Malt? AE Nick & Saul approached us with a clear brief, "we want unique restaurants that fit within the local area, and we do not want to roll out the same design." A great brief for us to work with and be able to create fish & chip restaurants that fit in with their local surroundings. GB What would you say inspired the Kerbisher & Malt look? JW Each site has been designed differently taking inspiration from the area the restaurant is in. The Chiswick restaurant is within a traditional Victorian building so we decided to go back to the Victorian pie and mash feel: more traditional with a modern twist. Brook Green has a few more commuters and tourists so we wanted to create a simple and clean space which was easy for people to pop in and grab a takeaway. We also included one big communal table for the local families. Ealing felt a bit more family orientated and therefore we wanted to make the restaurant more child friendly using colour and softer materials

GB Where did you source the materials and details for the project? AE We love to create bespoke furniture and for Kerbisher & Malt we worked closely with Style Matters to create the banquettes you will see in Abbeville Road. We also often travel to the Kempton market outside Richmond and find that a great source for furniture in general is the House Directory produced by House & Garden. n late summer it can feel like all the flowers have bloomed; however, heading into Autumn there are still flowers to look forward to and Sedum Spectabile is a prime example. From midsummer, Sedum is covered in pretty green buds, which bloom with masses of tiny nectar filled pink flowers in early autumn. Sedum spectabile likes to be facing the sun and, being a succulent, grows well in poor soil, requiring a little water. Once the flowers have gone, the flower heads can be left on the plant, as over winter they dry and make a beautiful sight in an otherwise barren garden. In late spring, prune Sedum Spectabile down to ground level and come Autumn it will have sprung back up. ◆ I

here’s no such thing as a Saturday morning lie-in for barrow-stall holder Helen Cockle. While the rest of Wandsworth are tucked up in bed, Helen, founder of children’s clothing retailer The Little Legs Company, is up, along with her husband and two children, and at the market. “I’m usually up around 6.15am, due to having small people,” she says brightly. “Then straight off to the warehouse. I have a list of items I sold the week before and I have to replace them so that the stall is fully stocked.” Tall, confident and very smiley, Helen has become a well-known fixture on the Northcote Road since opening in 2011. Selling collections of childrenswear for ages 0-6yrs, Little Legs has made a name for itself by sourcing high quality garments from independent British designers. Some are more established brands, such as Frugi and Tootsa McGinty, while others are lesser-known like Wild Things (which make handmade dresses), and Picaloulou, founded by “a woman who has a team of knitters around the country who knit scarves for us.”

I THINK part of the charm IS THAT people KNOW ME Trading from September through to January, the stall is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday come rain or shine. “That’s the hardest thing about owning a barrow,” says Helen, “we’re so weather dependent. The big shopping day of the year for all stores is the Saturday before Christmas, and we can take up to three times what we normally take in a day, but on Christmas 2012 it absolutely chucked it down and of course it hugely impacted on our takings.” Originally set up as an advertising mechanism to drive traffic to the website, the barrow became the surprise success. “I think that happened because kids’ clothes are about seeing and feeling,” she says, “and people are far more impulsive on a market stall. The biggest challenge for retailers is getting people to walk through the door, but I have the whole of Northcote road walking through my door every weekend.” It takes a certain type of character to be able to brave the elements and maintain a welcoming temperament all day long, but after three years on the job Helen seems to have it nailed. “It’s a real selling job,” she says, “and as much as it’s nice to be a friendly face, you still have to close a sale. I think that’s where the skills of my old job come to the fore.” She spent 12 years’ in the world of tax recruitment, but soon long hours in a money-driven environment came at odds with the world of parenthood. “I think I lost my hard edge and was no longer suitable for the job,” she says honestly. “I think most people fantasise about

107 B&C_Aug_Little_Legs.indd 107

having a shop at some point in their life. I thought; I’ve got a kid, I need kids’ clothes, I’ll open an online store!” she laughs jovially. “But I reckon I probably made about £10,000 worth of mistakes, from massively over-ordering and not understanding the buying. Terminology — like drop shipping — gets bandied around and you don’t know what it means!” The Little Legs Company has carved out its niche through word of mouth and a loyal customer-base. A recent appearance on BBC2’s documentary ‘Business Boomers’ gave a welcome 1,000 extra hits on the website, but celebrity endorsements from the likes of used-to-be local Dannii Minogue are the icing on the cake. “She bought a pair of pyjamas and did a bit of tweeting and blogging about us too.” Hard graft it may be, but the 120-year old Little Legs barrow has many more years left in it. “I think Northcote road is a very special area, and Little Legs goes hand-inhand with that,” concludes Helen. “I could have other people running the barrow for me, but I think part of the charm is that people know me. There is a real community here and I’m part of it.” ◆

CONFIDENTIAL A new recipe for little ones from Ella’s Kitchen and Amanda Constance looks at the new guides making A Levels easier

RECIPE

GOLDEN TREASURE MUFFINS ittle explorers love to discover new treasure – and inside these muffins they’ll find squishy golden nuggets of butternut squash. A sprinkling of thyme gives a tasty, herby twist.

L

WHAT YOU NEED • 400g butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into small chunks • 4 unsmoked streaky bacon rashers, finely chopped • 125g self-raising white flour • 50g cornmeal • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 2 teaspoons finely chopped thyme • 1 egg • 75ml buttermilk • 3 tablespoons mild olive oil or sunflower oil WHAT TO DO 1 Preheat the oven to 220°C/ Gas Mark 7. Line a 12-section muffin tin with paper cake cases that measure 9cm in diameter when flattened out. 2 Cook the squash in a saucepan of boiling water for about 10 minutes until softened but not mushy. Drain well and return to the pan. Crush the squash until broken up but not puréed. Leave to cool. 3 Heat a dry frying pan and fry the bacon for about 5 minutes until crispy. Transfer to a large bowl and add the flour, cornmeal, baking powder and thyme. 4 Beat together the egg, buttermilk and oil in a separate small bowl. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients with the squash and mix together until only just combined. 5 Divide the mixture evenly among the cake cases and bake in the oven for 15 minutes until slightly risen and pale golden.

SQUISH SQUASH Ask your little helper to squish the cooked butternut squash. If you let it cool down first, they can use their hands for messy foody fun!

W

hen Jolyon Connell’s daughter Flora didn’t achieve a perfect A in her AS Level on Shakespeare, it got him thinking. Flora – in the sixth form at St Mary’s Calne – got straight As in every subject apart from the great bard. It was The Tempest that had been the problem, a tricky one at the best of times, so Connell immediately offered to help. He dug out his old notes, yet found little to help him there and then scratched his head, as he had no idea which critic to turn to. ‘What do you do if, at the age of 17, you need some direction?’ Connell explains. ‘It’s York Notes or nothing and they don’t give you any idea of which critic to start with.’ And surely if Flora – the privately educated daughter of the ex-deputy editor of The Sunday Telegraph – needed help, many others did, too? Connell’s lightbulb moments are not to be ignored. The last time he had one, the result was The Week, the news digest that became the

publishing success story of the last two decades and is now Britain’s highest-selling weekly subscription magazine. He rang his old tutor at St Andrews, Graham Bradshaw – acclaimed by Harold Bloom as one of the best Shakespeare scholarsof the last 50 years – and asked him to write a guide to The Tempest; five years later, the first Connell Guide was born. With each dedicated to a single, classic text, there are now 20 in print. Other Shakespeare plays covered include Othello, King Lear,

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Dulwich_Aug_Education_v2.indd 110

Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, while the range of novels includes Jane Eyre and Great Expectations, along with modern classics such as The Great Gatsby, Heart of Darkness and The Waste Land. Every guide is written by a leading academic in the field, is no more than 20,000 words long, and is accessible and beautifully designed. Like The Week, the guides illuminate without sacrificing complexity and seamlessly convey the viewpoints from both sides of the critical spectrum. Last September, Connell Guides also launched a subscription service for schools. 275 have signed up so far ‘including all the major public schools,’ says Connell, who adds that he is keen to get state schools on board. For £195 a year, schools receive all 20 guides, the four new ones published in the following year, plus access to Connell Shorts – briefer, digital guides to modern texts, such as Atonement, The Road, and The Bloody Chamber. Subscribers also receive the Connell fortnightly review, regular new essays and a monthly quiz. Colin Hall, head of Holland Park School, says: ‘In these days of Facebook, text language, downloads... the ‘plugged in’ generation find it harder to digest academic texts. What Connell Guides bring is immediacy and clarity; brevity with depth. They unlock the complex and offer students an entry route.’ This September, Connell Guides is launching a virtual Book Club. Designed to appeal to a wider audience, subscribers will receive a monthly Connell Guide or Connell Short (either in print or digitally), a fortnightly literary review, plus a literary briefing, quizzes and more. Connell has also started filming a series of video talks with university dons. When he spoke to Absolutely he had just returned from Oxford, where he discussed Romeo and Juliet with Simon Palfry, a Fellow at Brasenose and distinguished Shakespeare critic. Next in the pipeline is a film with Valentine Cunningham, a Senior Fellow at Corpus Christi College in Oxford, about King Lear and Mrs Dalloway. And his work has not gone unnoticed. At the Sunday Times Festival of Education a few months ago, the (then) Education Secretary Michael Gove said what many teachers are now thinking: ‘John Connell should be garlanded with roses.’  connellguides.com

1.What common mistakes do sellers make?

B

y far the worst mistake to make is getting the pricing wrong. If priced too low by an agent looking to get a quick commission rather than acting in the best interest of the vendor, potential profit is lost. Some unscrupulous agents will deliberately overstate the value of the property to ensure the instruction, but by overpricing a home people will simply not come and view it. The key is to do some research yourself, with the advent of the internet it is very easy to see what other similar properties in the area have sold for and so you yourself can get a pretty good idea of what your property is worth. Do not be suckered in by agents promising you the world!

es, definitely. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel bigger and brighter, it also demonstrates that your home has been well looked after and this will often have a positive impact

on the price that you achieve for the property. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

3.Where should I invest?

T

he London property market continues to perform robustly and all the areas Jacksons Estate Agents operate in have seen an extraordinary start to 2014 with record sale prices being achieved time and again. So South London is undoubtedly a smart place to invest in, with its accessibility by rail and tube into Central London. In particular Earlsfield, Streatham and Tooting show all the attributes of being areas booming at present. They are seeing significant growth in prices and volumes of buyers never seen before. It’s certainly not too late to get a good deal, so well worth taking a look!

4.Why hasn’t my property sold?

I

n nearly all cases of a property not selling it is to do with the asking price. If clients are too optimistic with their asking price and the market cannot support

that price level, the property will stick. The best way to market is go with a Guide Price to generate multiple bids. In the country, issues like flooding, mining, noise pollution from mortorways and airports and smells and sprays from farms will have a dramatic affect, but even so, a lowering of the asking price is the pill that will need to be swallowed to create a sale.

5.How do Open House viewings work?

I

f there are lots of potential buyers interested in a property an Open House day is a great way forward. It allows the viewing process to be done in one day, so it is a good option for vendors as it keeps disruption to a minimum. Open House viewings normally take place in 15 minute slots either in a morning or afternoon but this is dependent on the property. Open Houses tend to create a buzz because seeing other interested parties on the viewing confirms that the property is a good purchase. After an open house offers normally come in over the next few days.

PROPERTY | PRIME PURCHASE

Prime Purchase MARKET COMMENT

George Franks on International Buyers

I

nternational buyers are something that most vendors expect their estate agent to be able to produce. As we are all very aware, London is a multicultural place, and one of the very few cities where the world thinks their money is safe. This is a fair assumption and not only does it apply to the areas of prime central London, but increasingly you hear Italian, French, and even American voices on Clapham Common and Battersea Park, as well as large swathes of Wandsworth, Hammersmith and Fulham. Estate agents have made the most of this international market by claiming that they have offices and connections all over the world, who bring in international buyers by the coach load on a regular basis. Most international buyers are already living or have family in London. These buyers, in my opinion, are not international buyers - they are foreign nationals already hugely integrated in the London market and will try and buy property through exactly the same means as a UK buyer. The true international buyer, who does buy from abroad, will generally use search agents to locate the right property for them. If you consider these two points, it makes the international or worldwide argument from estate agents seem little more than clever marketing. As a company, over the last 6 months, just over 38% of our transactions were involving a foreign purchaser or vendor in some way shape or form. As London is now a truly international city, these figures shouldn’t surprise us.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Tim Phillips Associate Director of Sales at Chestertons, Battersea

I

Photography: rebecca noonan

always wanted to be an architect, my dad worked in the industry and I think his love of buildings and design rubbed off at an early age. My mum was very creative which was where my love of art came from. My dad couldn’t describe anything without drawing what we called a “daddy diagram” to show us how something worked or looked. I loved buildings and drawing so it seemed a natural career path. My dad helped to get me my school work experience placement at Sir Norman Foster Architects. I loved working in London and was involved in some very impressive projects and, in fact, I asked if I could stay for the rest of the summer. I never imagined that so many years later I would be working in Battersea and selling property where I had stood as a schoolboy. I grew up in Hampshire, we moved there from Surrey when I was about 12. I seem to remember the move was rather “kicking and screaming”. I moved from Surrey with all my friends and a school I loved to a new area where all I had to do was play in fields. It seems over time the fields and people were why I fell in love with the area. I always worked in London and travelled home. It was only about a year ago that I made the jump and moved to Battersea. I still manage to see my friends and family but don’t spend an hour and a half on a train every day. I was very into my art and science at school and college, still seeming to be on the Architect career path. When it came to university I was in my “arty” phase and decided on a Graphic

Design degree. After my degree I felt like I needed a break from art so I opened the graduate recruitment page of the newspaper and the first job I applied for was a London estate agent, and I got a car! I soon found that I loved the job. I had found my thing, something I was good at and really enjoyed doing. I have worked at Chestertons’ Battersea Office for just over two years; I worked in Wimbledon Village for Chestertons before that. I had never worked in an area in which I felt instantly at home, I had to move here. My biggest daily problem is choosing a venue, there are so many bars and restaurants to choose from and I am a real foodie. We are lucky enough to sell a vast range of properties. Today our register starts at a one bedroom flat at £350,000 up to houses on Clapham Common for around £2 million. There are even off plan properties in Battersea Power Station and other developments in Nine Elms. Around here we’ve seen a huge increase in capital values, roughly around 25% in 2013. The market has slowed a little, but it really was time for some normality. Battersea has always been incredibly resilient and I see that trend carrying on this year. I believe we have seen a “levelling off” but applicants are still priced out of Fulham and Chelsea so Battersea is the place they are all coming to, and with so much to offer who can blame them?

accepted on a house in France and had a moving date for the end of June which could not be changed. Knowing that we had to move quickly, we soon found a buyer and completed in time. Most interesting property I've been involved with: We were once instructed on an unmodernised split level apartment in the landmark Art Deco building Du Cane Court. The interiors still have many original features from when it was built in 1934, including its door handles and radio speakers, which were used as an intercom system between the reception and each flat. The property I'd most like on our books is: I would most like a particular double fronted house on Elmbourne Road, it is stunning inside, with clean white interiors general consensus that the market does have its busy and quieter seasons, there is the post-Christmas rush and the school holidays slow down, but I also believe that extremes in weather can make their mark on the activeness of the market. Last year’s bitter winter when there was snow on the ground ensured everyone was tucked up sipping cocoa rather than looking at houses, creating some quiet weeks. Equally, as the temperatures soar, viewings tend to have a slight decline as entertaining kids and eating Cornettos becomes the priority!

throughout. The house has been featured in many television commercials and series, one of which was ‘I own Britain’s best house’. Most unusual interior: Not the most unusual, but by far the prettiest conversion of a former single garage, is a one bedroom house we are currently marketing on Mayford Road, which has a charming courtyard garden. I never thought I'd see... Germany beat Brazil seven to one in the FIFA World Cup Semi Finals!

LOCAL ESTATE AGENT HELPS SET UP BATTERSEA CROSS TRADERS ASSOCIATION

A

t the recent Battersea Literature Festival held at Battersea Power Station members of the Battersea Cross Traders Association had the opportunity to introduce themselves to local residents and to highlight the aims and aspirations of the association. Set up earlier this year by Mark Howell, director of local estate agent aspire, along with other business owners in the area, the Battersea Cross Traders Association is all about working with the local business community to help improve the area surrounding the cross roads of Battersea Park Road, Latchmere Road and

Battersea Bridge Road – concentrating initially on friendliness and presentation to safety and security. The association has named the area around the two roads - Battersea Cross – with the ultimate aim of making these two roads a destination for those living in and around Battersea as oppose to a cut through. Mark Howell comments; “We are delighted to be part of such a worthwhile association and we are pleased it is already creating a lot of interest amongst local businesses and residents. We see this as the first step in a

long process but we are hopeful our plans will be approved by both the local council and residents and that we will soon be able to put in place some of our initial ideas. We already have at least 30 businesses on board and we are hoping to introduce initiatives such as Christmas lights and flower displays to improve the overall look of the area. In addition, we are working with the local council to keep crime at a low level for both traders and residents. The aim is to make Battersea Cross a thriving community for both businesses and residents.” A loyalty card is also on the list of initiatives

for those wishing to shop and eat in the local area and a number of businesses have already shown interest. A street festival is also planned for summer 2015 and the association are currently awaiting approval before finalising plans. The 30 traders already involved in the association range from a florist and toy shop to a furniture retailer and local personal trainer. The association is liaising with local councillor Lorinda Freint on the planned initiatives and initial ideas have already been very positively received.

Are you a migrating variety? If you’re looking for property with more space, greater investment potential and a competitive price tag, you might be looking in the wrong place. South East London has all of these attributes and house prices are lower than our more established SW neighbours. At Pedder, we have a greater choice of SE London property than any of our competitors, so maybe it’s time to have a look. You never know, the grass may just be greener this side of the fence. Pedder. What are the tenant’s responsibilities?

I

f you are using a reputable agent all your responsibilities should be laid out in the tenancy agreement. It is always wise to read this very carefully as liability may change and some landlords may offer extras which are not the norm such as the offer of a cleaner, gardener or window cleaner included in the rent. Normally tenants are responsible for taking over the payment of all utilities and council tax. During the tenancy you have a legal responsibility to report any damages to the property as soon as you know about them.

PROPERTY | NEW TO THE MARKET

New to the Market VENDER ADVICE

What are the potential hold ups in the exchange process?

W

ith there being so many parties involved in the exchange process, it isn’t surprising that there can be hold ups. Causes can range from lenders being slow to book the valuation, to surveyors being overloaded with work, delaying the survey. Chains falling apart from below or above can also slow the process. Additionally, managing agents not issuing the management pack quickly enough, or being slow to respond to managing agents' enquiries can also cause delays. We would always recommend using a reliable local agent like Featherstone Leigh who will keep you informed throughout in order to keep stress to a minimum!
